Summary : you always wanted a simple life but to be born as the daughter of a dangerous mobster turned out to be a curse for you. It’s the middle of the night as you sneak out from the backside of the dingy motel you and Ethan chose to hide for two days before catching a bus to Virginia. You were headed to the NY port bus terminus as you cautiously walked through the dimly lit alleyway. Both of you carrying a duffel bag in your hand as you briskly walk down to the main street.

"Ethan come on'' you whisper yell looking back to your boyfriend who was walking right behind you with whom you have planned to elope and start a new life away from your father's clutches who happens to be the mafia king of Northeast United States and wants to forcefully marry you off to another mobster of Europe to expand his territory and grab hold on their turf.

"Y/N are you sure your dad will not find us trying to flee right under his nose?" Ethan asks nervously. You smile softly as you put down your bag. Your hands reach up to his face cupping it gently.

"Don't you worry honey. I have a friend over there who has made all the necessary arrangements. In a few hours we will be in our paradise far from all of this. Just you and me, baby."

"But what if your dad already knows about us and sent his men to kill me."

"By the time daddy will come to know about us running away he will have nothing to do. He has no power in the southern states so we will be safe." You press your forehead on to his before stepping away from him and are about to turn around to resume walking but then the inevitable happens.

BANG! a gunshot was fired from a near distance.

You flinched at the deafening sound and felt something graze past you as some viscous liquid splattered on your face. You run your hand through your face to find blood stains and look at Ethan with horror in your eyes, a bullet has punched it's way right through his chest causing a hole in its wake as blood oozed out, his white shirt slowly turning scarlet red.

"Ethan!! oh my god!!" you gasped and rushed to him. Ethan felt dizzy, his vision going blurry as his body began to collapse. You quickly hold on to his weight slowly crouching down to kneel on the pavement placing his head on your lap.

"No! No! No, This can't happen!" You didn’t know what to do as you franctically pressed your hands together on the wound on his chest trying to stop the bleeding, tears running down your cheeks.

"Mija" your throat went dry at the deep voice. You turned your head to find your father standing all tall and powerful, face expressionless with his hands stuffed inside his pockets and right by his side is your step brother Julian. In no time his hunch men surrounded the area.

"Daddy he's dying do something please." you sobbed.

"You shouldn't have tried to run away Mija or else poor Ethan would have been alive to see tomorrow's daylight."

"C'mon now get up." He reached out his hand to you.

"What? No! Daddy please help him. He'll die. I'll do whatever you say, marry whoever you want but please save him." You begged him as fat tears rolled down your cheeks.

"It's too late for that Mija. You should have known well that after your engagement you are just a safe-keeping of the Holland's for us. Son-in-law is really upset with your behavior. He is the one who helped us track you down."

"Jules at least you try to understand." You turned to your step brother in despair.

"Enough sister we have to go, we don't want the whole NYPD chasing us for a petty collateral damage." he says sternly.

"You already are a big disgrace to the family. Thankfully my step brother-in-law is very generous to accept you even after all this."

"No I'm not going with you anywhere, either you shoot me like him or else I'll do it myself." You scrambled up back on your feet and with a swift move snatched the gun from the holster of one of his men standing near you. You pointed the gun to  your head holding onto the trigger.

"Y/N Martinez enough is enough! Drop the gun now!" your father commands agitated.

"No!" you shakily press the trigger a little more as tears pricked your eyes.

"You'll not do that Y/N." your father warns again.

"Oh hell I'll do if I don't get to live with the love of my life then you will not get what you want." you spat trembling in rage.

"Y/N no.. No" Ethan croaked in pain, the angry demeanor you had softened at his voice.

"Ethan, honey.. " you dropped to your feet kneeling beside his weak body.

"if you die then I die too." You sniffled. Ethan threaded his fingers to yours.

"No, Y/N you - you have to live. For me. Promise me."

"No" you whimper.

"Promise me Y/N, this-this is my last wish" He took large gulps of air while he spoke. You screwed your eyes shut feeling helpless at the given moment.

"I-I promise Ethan." Your voice quivered.

"I love you Y/N.." he smiled weakly as his voice trailed off as it was becoming difficult for him to breathe.

"I love you too baby." You sniffled. Ethan's eyes were droopy as he struggled to stay awake. He was barely breathing.

"No, no Ethan, stay with me please." you clutched onto his hand desperately. He swallowed his last breath of air before succumbing to eternal sleep in your arms.

"Ethan?" you shake his lifeless body. "Ethan wake up!!" all was in vain as Ethan's limp body lay on the pavement.

"Ethaaan!!!" you wail.

"Take care of the body. I need to handle my ever rebellious daughter." your father ordered.

"Okay boss." one of his capos obliged.

"Now c'mon and let's get you prepared for your husband." your father grabbed on to your arm.

"No,no,no" you try to grasp onto Ethan's lifeless body. Your father ripped you apart from his body forcing you to stand up on your feet.

"It's your last week with us anyway, spend some time with your mother, make some happy memories, she will miss her only daughter the most."

"Happy memories?! You took every ounce of happiness from my life, you are a monster! You all are! I hate you!" you screamed struggling hard to free yourself from your father's firm grip.

"One day you'll know everything your daddy did was for your own good. So stop fighting and do as you are told like a good girl" Your father and brother Julian dragged you to the car. You were a walking dead when you reached your home which seemed a prison to you now. Your mother came rushing to you.

"Oh sweetie you're safe. Thank god I was so worried." she wrapped her arms around you in a hug.

"Mom.. Ethan.. He's gone." You broke down in her arms.

"It's ok sweetie. Don't worry everything will be fine. You are my strong girl I know you will get through this" she cradled your face pecking your forehead trying to console you.

"Ask your daughter to stop acting like a brat and learn how to be a good wife to her future husband and tend to his needs. Don't want the Holland's point fingers at us saying we didn't raise our daughter right."

"Why did you do this Victor?"

"After so many years are you questioning your husband Rosette?"

"No, I'm questioning a father and how could he do this to his only daughter?"

"She brought it upon herself." your mother was about to say something but was cut off by your father.

"No! I don't want to hear anything more about this. Just do what I said." he says sternly.

"The Martínez's will arrive in a week, start making all the necessary arrangements."

"Once the deal is done you will be taking over our family business son are you ready to sit on this throne?" The senior Holland asks his eldest son Tom in the presence of his younger twin sons Harry and Sam and Tom’s future consigliere and best friend Harrison as he stood in the middle of the spacious conference room patting on the big leather chair placed right in the middle of the wooden round table from where he has been running this empire all these years commanding men to do all his dirty work and sealing fate of people who didn’t comply by his wishes.

"Always ready dad." Tom stood tall.

"I know you are, my son. This is the day I have been waiting for all my life."

"Okay now enjoy your last few days of freedom of a bachelor before you are a married man." he pats his shoulder proudly and was about to leave the room but turned to him again.

"One more thing you need to keep a tighter hold on your woman from now on Tom. Her carefree days are over, she needs to be made aware of her responsibilities including giving the family an heir."

"Yes dad."

As his father leaves with the twins Tom slumps down on one of the chairs with Harrison beside him. He lets out a long sigh taking out his phone.

The first thing he does is open your Instagram page and go through your pictures which has turned out to be a habit for him for the last three years. Harrison was sitting beside him as he saw your pictures too. Some were with your college friends, some you attending one of your dad's galas in the prettiest designer dresses and some bikini clad sunkissed aesthetic pictures of you on vacation on some exotic island. Tom thought you looked unearthly in every picture but his mood would go sour seeing the comments below of several guys objectifying your body. He felt like hunting them down and chopping off their fingers with which they typed such lewd comments.

Though he himself wasn’t a man of high morals either drinking, gambling, bringing in girls every night in spite of being engaged to you though each night he wished it was you on his bed, not some random hooker he picked up from the bar. He is well aware that you don’t like him and despise this whole marriage. But he has nothing to worry anymore now because in a few days you are going to be his for lifetime. And he is confident that he will win you over eventually.

"I see why you are hell bent to marry her, she's a siren." Harrison remarked snarkly, breaking Tom from his thoughts.

"Hopefully she sounds like one too" Tom chuckles.

"But you really want to spend the rest of your life with her? She doesn't seem to be the one to follow rules."

"She's always been a wild horse since childhood that is why I like her even more and trust me wild horses are more fun to tame Haz. I can assure you in no time she'll be roaming around like a puppy around me."

"And how do you know you'll be able to tame a headstrong girl like her?"

"That will not be an issue because once I make sure that my child is inside her she will have nothing to do." He smirks. "Motherly instincts, you know how that works. After all, she's a woman. How much ever she hates me she will never separate her child from his father."

"And once I will have her father removed from the picture and taken over their empire she will have nowhere to go."

"You know she'll hate you more than she already does after you kill her father."

"Her father is no less than a monster. I will be doing her a favor actually." Tom once again glances at a portrait picture of you.

"Princess your kingdom eagerly awaits your arrival." he mutters to himself with a smug grin on his face.

Charlie

Uh... Hello? Anybody still here? I haven't been around in years and years. But I keep my fandoms stored in some corner of my brain waiting for something to tug them out. And of all things this time it was Taylor Swift re-releasing her old songs, because I used to imagine so many percabeth scenes listening to "Fearless". So have this little something that's been sitting unfinished in my archives for years now.

Remember that time Percy saw Sadie Kane and thought “Hey, this is what mine and Annabeth’s daughter would look like”? Yes.

(Also there are small nods to that fic I wrote about Logan, Hidden Heritage, but I've been meaning to re-write it someday because there were SO MANY PLOT HOLES omg)

When they find out it’s a girl it’s a bit too soon to know for sure, or so the doctor tells them. They’ll have to wait for the next appointment to know for certain. “So don’t go buying any tiny dresses yet,” he jokes and they laugh along, but they’ve been together for approximately eighteen years now, they can tell what the other’s thinking with a glance and the ecstatic grin that breaks through their lips lets him know they’re on the same page. Too late. They’re already thinking plush bow and arrows and a Merida costume for her first Halloween.

Percy tries to keep his cool. As the weeks progress, he tries not to get his hopes up, but in his heart he knows already. They hadn’t really had a preference before, they’d been too happy knowing their baby was fully human and had all its limbs (with the number of deities they’d pissed off, you never knew), but a little girl? It feels right after their two boys, it feels like their family will be complete.

(He thinks about a slight blonde girl with streaked hair and a British accent dropping from the sky on a magic camel, remembers thinking “if Annabeth and I had a daughter…” and his chest squeezes tight with happiness so raw he has a little trouble breathing)

When the doctor beams at them next appointment and says “Congratulations, Jackson family, it really is a girl,” he’s not surprised, but no less elated. He doesn’t hear the lame joke about Jackson Five, he’s too busy trying to be a manly man and not burst into tears because he’s going to have a daughter. When Annabeth’s in the other room paying for the appointment, and he’s waiting for the doctor to print the really impressive high tech 3D picture of the ultrasound, the man asks him “So did you go ahead and buy a tiny dress anyway?”

Percy blushes.

The man shakes his head in amusement. “Every time”.

His work colleagues, proud dads of little girls themselves, try to terrorize him with tales of tea parties and future boyfriends, and Percy thinks somewhere in the middle of all that teasing they mean well, but really, he’s mostly annoyed. It’s not like he’s new to parenthood, he’s got two sons already and they seem to be turning out okay, and before, when Logan and Nathan were just a nice dream for the future, there was Estelle, the little sister Percy had never expected, but loved to bits all the same.

And then Charlie is born.

She’s tiny, warm and pink, all curled up in her yellow cable-knit blanket, a tuft of blonde hair peeking out of a tiny, tiny beanie, features scrunched into the most adorable variation of a grumpy face. He’s not new to parenthood, he’s been here twice before, but the rush of affection and protectiveness and awe and raw love is just as genuine. He’s smiling like a dork, can’t seem to stop, walking from side to side, avidly searching her traits. She’s bigger than Nate was when he’d been born, but smaller than Logan. Her hair was light, like Nate’s, would it stay blonde or darken with time? Would her eyes be like his or Annabeth’s? And oh, she had her mother’s nose (they all did).

It never fails to amaze him how such a small, vulnerable being can shake up his whole world until it’s made a space for her. And he’s done this before, he’s no first time sailor this time, he’d thought he had it all under control. But she blinks and looks up at him with half-lidded eyes and a frowny face and—they’re green. Her eyes are the blue-green Logan’s are, Percy’s are.

(He’s got two sons who are his life, and he does love all his children equally, but holding his daughter for the first time, he thinks he understands his friends’ warnings. He doesn’t love her more, it’s just… different. It’s special.)

When he goes back to work, Nick takes one look at him and bursts into laughter. He claps him on the shoulder in commiseration.

“I told you.”

He’s completely wrapped around her finger already.

It’s not too different, he finds out. Especially having been pre-trained by Estelle. He’s got to brush up on his Disney princess knowledge, and hair braiding skills. He hasn’t gotten much better at color coordinating the polka dotted bows and tiny shoes, but Charlie is really forgiving. She is a very happy baby, much happier and easy going than any of the boys had been.

She’s also fucking crazy.

She is smaller and skinnier than her brothers, likes to wear frilly dresses and talk to plush animals and dance around the house in a pink tutu, but she’s wild. She never learned to crawl, just held on to the couch until she was wobbling on two feet, and it seemed like the very next day she was running across the house, the mall, the park, and if he turned his eyes away for one second, she was shooting off in the streets and nearly getting run over.

He’d found her dangling from the kitchen cabinets, trying to reach the cowering cat. She had a phase when she thought she could fly and she would climb furniture and stairs and the window sill and just… Launch herself into the air expecting her flying powers to manifest spontaneously. If they hadn’t been trying to raise them away from the whole mythological world, he would have sat her down and clarified that she had the wrong Olympian Grandparent in mind. She might have had more luck jumping into the ocean.

She had a way to jut out her lower lip, and turn those big green eyes on him that could render his every effort to be a responsible parental presence useless.

Besides, she was so funny. He could never muster enough anger to discipline her, because if he found her on the kitchen table covered in peanut butter, somehow sporting a very sticky Mohawk, and looking entirely unapologetic, well, he just couldn’t stop laughing.

One day he’s coming home from work and he hasn’t even pulled the key from the lock when Charlie calls out ‘you’re back daddy,’ in what sounds vaguely like a new jersey accent. He finds her sitting on the floor of the living room, drowning in one of Annabeth’s bathrobes, pink plastic barbie sunglasses on, holding a pooh bear sippy cup with one hand and a pinky stretched out.

“Charlie, what are you doing?”

“It’s wine Wednesday, daddy.”

“It’s what?”

“Wine Wednesday.”

He had half a mind to check if her sippy cup actually contained wine because they hid their alcohol way up in the cabinets she can’t reach but that girl could climb like a monkey. He knows he should follow that remark up with some kind of questioning of where she’d even heard of ‘wine Wednesdays’ and then explain that kids don’t drink wine or some other kind of responsible parent speech, but a sudden burst of incredulous laughter bubbles up in his throat and he takes refuge in the kitchen, lest he encourages her behavior.

He finds Annabeth there, hand over her mouth, clearly in stitches over their daughter’s performance. He wants to question if she gave her permission to wear her bathrobe but finding his wife nearly doubled over in silent laughter in the kitchen is too much and he finally lets out the guffaw he’d been trying to hold on to.

It’s not the first time Charlie leaves them breathless with laughter, and he’s almost scared of what she’s going to cook up in the future.

Charlie is a hellion.

There isn’t one person safe from her pranks, but she’s so adorable she hardly ever catches hell for it, and she’s learning to use it in her favor – thankfully, just in time for her parents to develop immunity to her puppy eyes. And she’s… difficult, yes, but not always, and not in a terrible way. For all her climbing the roof, organizing illegal cookie sales, getting in fights with her classmates, she’s not a bad kid. She’s got Percy’s penchant for befriending the kids no one wants to go near, and defending her ragtag team of losers. She’s loyal to a fault, and it gets her in trouble often.

She and Nate have epic jealousy fights over everything, including – but not limited to – Logan’s attention, the crayons, the biggest piece of cake and all the videogame characters in the world are not enough, they will always want whatever the other picked. It gives them many, many headaches. Logan, on the other hand, positively spoils her, and whenever Charlie gets in trouble they can be sure to find her hiding behind her big brother while he gives them this solemn look and says “It’s ok, mom and dad, Charlie promises she won’t do it again. We’ve talked.”

When the whole “Logan being attacked by a dracanae in school and thus finding out his Olympian heritage” debacle came to pass, and they started frequenting camp again, there was nowhere in the entire Camp Charlie would rather be than the stables. She’d spend hours there with the Aphrodite kids, brushing the pegasi and talking to them endlessly about all her classmates and her friends, and her dolls, and her new dress, and the new book grandma gave her. It was all really cute until Percy realized the pegasi were talking back, and she fully understood their replies.

And it’s funny, really, because Logan had taken after Percy, to a point where bathing him had been hard as a child because he tended to stay dry in the tub, and Nathan was Annabeth to a T, but Charlie was a perfect mix of them both.

He guesses it makes sense it would be so explosive.

When Charlie is twelve, she gets kicked out of school.

Percy is not overly worried about it himself – the number of schools he’d been kicked out of reached double digits, and this was only her first – but he is worried about how she will feel. Getting the boot from a place that’s housed you for years, where your friends are, where everyone already knows you and having to start over is never pleasant, no matter how used to it you were.

He’d expected the school to have gotten tired of all her pranks and misbehaving, which was fair, he guessed. But when Annabeth comes home from the meeting with the school director, she is seething, and not at their daughter. Charlie is angry too. In fact, it’s the first time he’s ever seen his daughter well and truly pissed off. The two of them are a sight for nightmares, both blondes standing side by side ranting with righteous fury, they look ready to start a revolution. What he gets from her angry snarls and Charlie’s rushed rambling is that Charlie had talked back to a teacher that was picking on the autistic kid and demeaning the thirteen year old who was repeating sixth grade.

She’d called him a brain-washing small minded overgrown bully who, he was quoting, didn’t get enough love from his parents.

And Percy is so proud his eyes even get a little misty.

Because he’s getting old and sentimental and raising kids is very hard. No one knows what they’re doing, not one person, not even the fancy psychologists with those books on raising perfect, well rounded, high-achieving members of society that Annabeth insisted on reading when she was pregnant with Logan. You do your best and you hope for the best, and you don’t know what you get until it’s basically too late to do anything about it. And even if he did have the best mom in the history of the entire world to draw example from, he was also half of an absent Olympian father whose heritage condemned him to dance in and out of battlefields half his life.

He’s always been terrified of being a crap father.

He looks at Charlie cussing out with every mild version of actual cuss words, stalking around the kitchen like a little lioness in a cage, furious at the unfairness of the whole situation, caring less about being expelled and more about who was going to defend her friends from that awful teacher when she’s gone.

His daughter is only twelve, but she’s already so brave, such a force of nature. She won’t stand for injustice, and she won’t take insult lying down. And she’s so kind. She’s growing up, and the person she is slowly turning out to be… is good.

And something in his heart shifts and settles down, smooths over old fears and anxious thoughts.

Percy doesn’t mean to brag, but he thinks he’s not doing half bad as a parent.

Where it all started [Part 1]

Chapter 1 

Sometimes links don’t appear on posts. if you can’t see the link to “Chapter 1”, my masterlist is pinned to the top of my blog, and you can find it there.

Summary: Slytherin’s parents have another argument, but at this point, no one’s surprised. After all, they’re her parents. It would be abnormal if they didn’t argue. However, this one’s a biggie. The fight ends with the slam of a door and her dad packing his bags into the car and getting ready to leave. Desperate for him to come back, Slytherin’s mom forces her to go to him with a message that will surely make him stay. Buckle up folks, for this is where it all began. 

Slytherin stood on the sidewalk as she watched her dad pack up his things into the van. 

She dug her fingernails into her arm, her heart stinging with ache as her dad turned around with a smile on his face, a failed attempt to reassure her that it was going to be ok. It was all gonna be ok. After all, this was normal, right? It’s not like it was unusual that her dad was leaving again to go back to Florida, where the homewrecker waited for him, her outstretched hands eagerly opened up to him and his credit card. 

However, this was the first time he left abruptly. A spike of sorrow stabbed at Slytherin’s heart as she thought back to the sound of her parents’ door abruptly opening; soon after, she could hear angry stomps that quickly descended down the steps of the staircase. 

She could almost hear the hiss in her ear as she stood in the archway of the living room, watching her dad leave in the far distance. “Tell him that Ravenclaw’s crying,” her mother spat, pushing her towards the front door. “Quickly, before he leaves!” 

Slytherin internally sighed. How typical. Instead of resolving their relationship issues by going to couples therapy, her mom decided to throw all those burdens onto her daughter, who had already grown tragically used to being used as her puppet. 

She decided not to argue against going after her dad and trying to guilt-trip him into staying home as her mom wanted. Otherwise, she would be lectured on how she’s selfish and wouldn’t do this small thing for her mom, how she’s basically ruining this family by letting her dad leave, how family is so fucking important and manipulating her dad into staying would be vital to their happiness as a whole, how family this and family that. 

You get the point. Slytherin certainly did. That’s why she was currently standing awkwardly behind her dad, staring at his back as he lifted boxes into his car. 

“Um, Raven…” She paused. Her throat felt dry and tight. Swallowing with difficulty, she tried again. “Ravenclaw’s crying.” 

It wasn’t the crying itself that mattered. That wasn’t the main reason why her mom rushed her out the door to deliver the message to her dad. It was simply the fact that it was Ravenclaw who was crying. Let’s just say that he and his dad had a complicated relationship. 

Things were never the same between them after Ravenclaw sent an angry message to him via text when he was in Florida a year ago. The contents of the message reeked of disdain for his constant infidelity. When his mom found out, she shoved the phone into Slytherin’s face in the dead of night and asked if she knew about this. The glaring light from the screen nearly blinded her. 

Slytherin read the text messages through squinted eyes and could make out a few curse words here and there. Though she was slightly disoriented from the sudden ambush of information, it was clear to her that her brother resented their dad for what he did.  

That made Ravenclaw’s anguish even more useful in their mom’s opinion. Seeing the tears streak down his face when he heard that his dad was leaving again, she had a glorious idea. Perhaps if her husband knew of their son’s sorrow, he would reconsider his abrupt departure. After all, it was Ravenclaw who was crying. 

If it were Hufflepuff, that would be understandable—she can get quite emotional sometimes. But it was Ravenclaw, who was usually guarded and distant. One might suggest that he was secretly broken inside. But that’s not the point, at least not in his mom’s opinion. The main thing she was concerned about was that she could use his misery to her advantage! Maybe if her husband knew of his sadness, he would feel guilty enough to stay behind. After all, if his son, who despised him, was upset over his departure, perhaps it wouldn’t be so bad to stay home and endure his wife’s temper for a little while longer. 

Slytherin’s words did produce somewhat of a reaction. Her dad didn’t turn around for a while, but when he did, his eyes were slightly red and puffy. It was evident that he was trying to hold back his tears. One might think that this means that he’ll stay. He seemed distraught over the news that his son was crying because of his leave. Surely, he’ll stay, right? 

It wasn’t enough. Nothing ever seems to be enough.

“I’ll be back soon, okay?” He hugged her briefly and gave a light squeeze as a sign of reassurance. As a silent message that it was going to be ok. Even though everything was most definitely not okay. A thousand hugs and gestures of reassurance wouldn’t change this. 

Slytherin didn’t react angrily to his refusal, the unspoken declaration of No, I will not go back home. In fact, it seemed as if she didn’t react at all. However, if one were paying close attention, they would notice the sparkle in her eyes dim. But maybe there wasn’t a sparkle to begin with. She had been enduring this shit for so long that she forgot what it was like to be normal, to feel like the white kid you see in commercials, the one who seemed to radiate mirth, a type of energy that said, I don’t have a care in the world because life is so fucking great and I can’t stop smiling. She didn’t even bother to smile, a common facial expression when one is in a difficult situation and tries to diffuse the somber atmosphere by slapping a facade on their face, the corners of their lips upturned to form a grimace that resembles some sort of a smile—a twisted kind of smile, that’s for sure. Why should she pretend that everything was okay when it wasn’t? Instead, she merely nodded in response. 

When her dad pulled away to pack the last box into the trunk, she took a deep breath to diminish the familiar sense of abandonment that flooded her senses, to clear the warning signs that flashed in her mind. He’s leaving! Your dad is leaving! He’s abandoning you again. You’re apparently not important enough for him to stay. 

She stared at the ground, only looking up when she heard the sound of a car door slamming shut. The resounding click was all it took for the waterfalls to finally pour from her eyes, for it was at this moment when she realized that this was actually happening. This was no dream—it was reality. Her sad, devastating reality. Tears blurred her vision as she watched the car drive away, leaving her in the dust. 

Slytherin gasped in erratic breaths between her broken sobs as her eyes hung onto the tiny speck that resembled her dad who was driving 

away, 

away, 

and a-w-a-y.

Through the jumble of thoughts that clashed in her head, one thing was clear. Her dad was her dad, but only sometimes. 

Tears streaking down her face, she tried to soothe her pain with the belief that he would be back soon. If only she had known that it would be a while before he returned. If only he hadn’t left. Perhaps things would’ve been different for her if he stayed, for this was where it started. 

This marked the beginning of it all.

Author’s note: HI! Were you surprised to see that I posted two fics in a row?? I hope you enjoyed this. Most of it was unfortunately based on what happened to me a year or two ago. I based Ravenclaw on my brother, who did actually cry when my dad was leaving after an argument, and yes, my wack mother did force me to run after my dad to tell him. One of the few differences is that I’m not a drug addict and I’m fine now so dont worry. 

Idk how I feel about this series, it is a lot darker from what I usually write. I know I’m gonna have to write more for creative writing class, so maybe i will continue it. I will try to think of how to turn these fics into something more positive, because this stuff is very heavy and depressing. however, that will be a little difficult because the plot itself is naturally drab. however, i will try to think of a happy ending for Faye/Slytherin.

Summer was amazing to almost everyone but there was always someone who couldn't enjoy it , and that was Y/n L/n case . She was a fourth year at Hogwarts and wasn't really expecting with happiness going back home . Her mother was always shouthing at her and asking why her brother was still missing . She couldn't bear it anymore .

"Mom , is there any chance we could invite our friend ? " Bill asked his mother who was braiding little Ginny's hair . " She is probably not having a good summer at home , I think . Her letters are the most boring thing I have ever read ."

"That may be yours , Bill , mine are more interesting ." Said Charlie with a bright smile on his face .

"Im sure all you talk about in your letters are dragons ."

"That is not true " The oldest brother looked at him and raised his eyebrow . " We talk about Quidditch and more things .

"Okay , whatever you say ." He laughed and looked at her mother who saw all the argument in silence .

"You can invite her over , but not the whole month ." She said finally . "Just one or two weeks .

They looked at each other and smiled , happy that they could have Y/n at their home finally . Bill thought of her as a little sister and everytime he saw her he thought about how well she would get with all the Weasleys .

When their dad finally came home the first thing they did was going to Y/n's house .

She was in her room reading a book . The best time of the day was whenever she received one of her friends letter , they would tell her how amazing was being their summer and that made her happy .

"Who told you that you could read instead of looking for the next vault ." Her mother was in the door of her room , once again talking about her dear son . She was sick of that woman worrying more about Jacob than the daughter she still had . She was worried about her brother as well but at least did something to find him but her mother was just shouting why was he lost . "Mh? What is that?

A flying light in the sky was slowly approaching to their house . Y/n knew what it was and smiled . She took out her wand and pointed at her mother with it . " I'm sorry but I gotta go mum .

"What are you..." She tried to stop her but it was useless , she couldn't move anymore .

"Sorry ." She got some important things for her and went out . There was the car and Bill and Charlie with their father . " Guys , what are you both doing here ?

"Well , we thought you could use some help getting out of here ." Answered Charlie as Bill took Y/n's suitcase . " We should be going , our mother is waiting for us .

"You are the best ." She followed her friend insisde the car and saw Arthur Weasley . " It is nice to meet you finally , Mr Weasley .

" The pleasure is mine , Charlie and Bill talk a lot about you .

She looked at them with a smile , she was going to tease them about that , that was for sure .

Finally they arrived to the Burrow , Molly waited there with an incredible dinner at the table . They opened the door and Arthur went to see his wife . Charlie was carrying her suitcase while she tried to do it her own self .

"Just let him do it , Y/n ." Said Bill with a smirk on his handsome face . " You are a guest .

"Yes , I know that but ..." Charlie easily carried it with a kind smile , he went up to left it somewhere , she didn't know where . " You really didn't have to , Charlie . " Said when he was at her side once again .

"As Bill said , you are our guest ." She wished to help at least a little and Charlie knew but he knew his mother as well . Molly woudn't let a guest help in her house , it was rather difficult . She was about to say something but was interrumpted by a woman who had the same ginger hair as Charlie and Bill . It was really a ginger haired family . The woman had a big and kind smile on her face as she approached Y/n . She hugged her to the surprise of the young girl .

"You must be Y/n ." She was sure a kind woman letting a friend of her children to stay for a few weeks . " I've heard so much about you , about your family .

Suddenly the woman didn't seem that much happy at the mention of her family . She looked at Charlie , saw his worried face and smiled once again . " I'm sorry dear , is just that I am not really fond of your family .

"Oh ." She smiled a little and didn't care that much about that . " Don't worry , I am not really fond of them myself .

Molly smiled as she saw sadness on the girl's eyes . That was the moment when she decided that Y/n was going to be there all the time she wanted . " You can stay here all the time you want , dear .

"Ah , thank you so much Mrs. Weasley , it means so much for me ." She was honest , Bill and Charlie couldn't believe it . She did it . Their mother let her stay all the time she wanted even thought she was a L/n , a family who their mother hated .

"Call me Molly ." She said . " You have taken care of Charlie and Bill so now I will take care of you , It is the least I can do .

A true smile made its way to her lips as she denied with her head . " That is not true at all , they were the ones who took care of me .

"So you are Charlie's girlfriend ." George said and looked at his twin .

"The one he won't stop talking about ." Charlie started blushing as the twins kept going .

" I am not his girlfriend ." She said , blushing as well .

" Her future girlfriend probably . " Interrupted Bill while laughing . He loved teasing those two when it came to their love that was stuck because neither of them was brave enough to say how much they loved each other .

"Bill!" She cried out . " Stop teasing us .

Suddenly she heard something and then a little girl was in the floor crying . It was Ginny , the youngest . Before any of her older brother could go to help her the guest of the house went to see if she was okay . " Oh no , are you okay?

Her knees were bleeding , nothing that she couldn't handle after helping Madam Pomfrey so many times . She cured her wounds and then smiled at Ginny who was no longer crying . " Better now? " The girl nodded , she was shy and wasn't really happy about some stranger seing her cry . " You must be Ginny , you are just as pretty as your big brothers have told me . " The little girl blushed a bit while looking at the floor . " I am Y/n , Charlie and Bill's friend . It is a pleasure to meet you .

The other just watched and didn't want to interrumpt . " It is nice to meet you ." Whispered the little one and gave her a hug just as her mother used to do . After that she went to Charlie and waited for a piggyback ride .

"It that the Y/n you like? " Said her whishpering at his ears .

"Yes ." Answered , no one else but Ginny hearing him .

"She is pretty and kind ." Charlie laughed , it was her way of saying that she liked her as well .

"Now there's only Percy and Ron left ." Ginny told her brother to let her down and she went to Y/n . She waited for her to pick her up and when she was finally in her arms pointed the stairs . " You will show her the way to Ron and Percy while we help mom , Ginny ? " The second son smiled and let both girls to go .

" By the time she comes back from meeting those two she will probably know that you like her ." Bill was right , after all the twins went after them and Ron wasn't really good at keeping secrets .

She met Ron and he liked her rather quickly .

"Only Percy left ." Said Ginny still in her arms . George and Fred were still after them and now was Ron too .

"Why is Charlie a Gryffindor? " Asked Fred while laughing .

" Good question , if he is , he should have asked her out by n...

"Shhhhh!" Ginny looked at them angry . " Go away ." She was way to busy protecting his big brother to notice that they were finally with Percy .

" Then you are not here as Charlie's girlfriend?

"No?"She smiled confused .

"Ah!"Ginny tried to stop Percy but it was too late .

"Thought he would have asked you out by now ."

"What?"

She was a blushing mess that moment and Ginny went to find Charlie quickly but instead found Bill who went upstairs to get Y/n . They went to Bill's room .

"You OK , mate? " Never had he seen her like that and as probably future brother in law he wanted to help her .

"What Percy said means that Charlie ..." She hid her face in her hands . "Charlie likes me .

" You didn't know? " He laughed when someone came in his bedroom . " Oh , Charlie .

They both looked into each other's eyed and immediatly blushed . Bill got up of the bed and went out the room . " I am not letting you out until you both become a couple ."

He closed the room's door and stayed out .

"So you like me ." She was the first one to talk barely smiling . " Ohmygod ." She was blushing once again . " I cannot believe it , it's just ... how I ...

"It's true ." Finally he said something and sat at her side . " I kind of have a crush on you .

"I see ." Her heart was about to get out of her chest when she felt a hand on her shoulder . It was his way of telling her thay everything was okay .

" I understand if you don't like me back , tho .

At the other side of the door Bill was about to explode in anger for his brother behaviour .

"What? Are you stupid? " She looked at him competely confused . " I have been all the year sending hints to you , Charles Weasley .

" W-what? " He asked like an idiot ." For real?

"Of course ." She hugged him tight . " I coudn't be more happy . When I saw Bill and you coming to rescue me I knew this was gonna be an amazing summer .

" You like me ." He was still processing the information and hugged her back . " Does that mean that we are a couple now?

"Well , if you want to get out this room someday , yes . " They looked into each other eyes and started getting closer . " Then?

" Yes ... " They kissed finally and Bill opened the door in that moment .

" Thank godness that Percy doesn't know how to shut up . " Bill was thankful that his year of frustration was over at last .

" Wait , Percy told you? Not Fred , George or Ron ? "

" Ginny did a really good job keeping them quiet . " Bill went downstairs leaving them alone . " I... Io l-l ... I can't say it , I'm sorry .

"I love you ."Said him instead of her .

"Do you feel like a Gryffindor now?

"Maybe ." He thought for a moment and smiled . " I love you more than I love dragons .

" Woah , you really are a Gryffindor . " They laughed and she blushed . " Well , I love you so much that I could stop looking the Haunted Vault for you . Wait no , forget that , that would mean forgetting my brother .

" This is not romantic at all .

"You were the one to say Dragons first .

"To say I love you more than I love them ." He complained . " It is romantic .

" Well , if I didn't love your rants about dragons then I couldn't love you .

"That's rude .

"It is true , Dragon boy . " She smiled . " Look at our letters , almost all of them are about dragons or quidditch .

"I knew it!" Said Bill suddenly .

"Shut up , Bill!

“Are you almost done, Bahr?” You asked, as impatient as ever.

She was twisting your hair, and you had a lot of it which made this process of sitting a lot longer than most girls. You wanted to meet up with your sister-like best friend in the market, but you also wanted to see the foreign dignitaries who just arrived the other day. They’d be paraded through the town today, given a tour of the market and the clubs. This was the plan you had for today since you traded chores with your younger brother.

“Just two more, my dearest princess.”

You pouted and wondered where the men were from. Father had told you nothing except that he invited them. Rumors said that they had traveled over 5,000 miles to get here. You had barely seen 50 miles from your home even if you were the princess and heir to the throne. You knew how to handle a sword like it was your third arm as well as many other weapons, but it was often one of your brothers or your younger sister who were sent to far off lands in the name of diplomacy.

That’s why you were next in line instead of your older brother. He had been married off to a princess Jessi in the west, and you never got to see him except birthdays and super special occasions. Your people and parents probably didn’t want to lose their best healer, their good luck charm when it came to health and fertility.

You had no children yourself, but whenever people came to you, they were graced with child soon after. They were always so healthy. Strong. Beautiful. Fortunate in almost every aspect, and so on and so forth. A spotted kitten from the new litter purred as it settled into your lap. You pet its head. Qasab Alsukar was his name since he seemed like the sweetest of the bunch. He followed you around just as his mother did before pregnancy. For now, she was too tired to be your companion.

Was this a sign that you needed to have your own children soon?

“All done!” Your hair styling servant said as she smoothed the twists down to feel the bumpy texture.

“Thank you! I’m going to market!” You said, heading into your closet as soon as your mother came in.

“Make sure you hide your face and be careful!” Mother called.

You grinned, “I’ll be as careful as a kitten, Ma.”

And so you put on your most worn pair of slippers and a rich blue scarf on your head. Alsukar was on the heel of your feet the whole time. You slipped him into your basket and raced to your meeting place with Iset. She was there with her coils in several thin braids that met at the back of her head into one thick bun.

Her golden brown skin sparkled in the sunlight as you called out to her, “Iset!”

She turned around and grinned at you, “Eager to see me?”

Iset had been your friend since you two were mere babes. You butted heads from time to time, but you were always able to make up with one another. She was like you, another princess in disguise among your people.

“Always!” You said. “So, where are they?”

“This way, (Y/N). Follow me.” She linked your arm, and you walked to the seafood area of the market.

The smell made you lift your scarf a bit higher, but when you had heat and fresh fist, what else could one expect? Maybe you should get one for Glitter, Alsukar’s mom. You usually left all sorts of foods for her around the palace, but this looked divine. A special treat for her. You paid for the fish and put it in with Alsukar. It was wrapped up, so he wouldn’t get to it.

“They were right here. I’m sure they’ll show up someplace nearby.” Iset pouted. “Ooo, how about we head to the grains and see if they’ve gone there?”

“Alright.” You agreed feeling a strong presence passing by. “Let’s--Alsukar!”

He had jumped out of the basket and started chasing after some unseen thing. If he had been a grown cat, you wouldn’t have been too worried. Qasab Alsukar was only a month old. Of course you’d be worried. He was so quick, too. You chased after him, your jewelry jingling with every step. You called out his name and apologized to everyone you ran into.

At some point, you had lost sight of your kitten. Your precious baby. Glitter would never forgive you!

“Alsukar!!!!” You called, looking ridiculous.

Then you closed your eyes and called upon your intuition. You had promised to be careful and to hide your face, but this was important. Your eyes became slitted and your senses were heightened. Golden eyes searched the nearby area. It made you stand out too much. With a flick of your ear, you heard a familiar meow. Alsukar.

You went in the direction of the meow which turned to purring. At least he was safe wherever he was. There. At the ankles of a man in curious clothing. Way too many layers for this type of weather. He had a white dog near his side. One you had never seen before. Just like his owner, it had such thick fur for such heat. You favored cats, more, however.

The dog growled at him, and you started to get angry. How dare such a beast threaten a child?

“Monie, stop it.” The man picked Alsukar up. “Aww, what are you doing, you small precious thing?”

He was tall. About six feet high from what you could tell. You relaxed and let the powers inside rest for now as you lowered your head and approached the man.

“Hello, good sir, may I have my kitten back? He jumped out of my basket when you passed me earlier.” You explained. “He must enjoy your scent.”

It was quite intoxicating, made it difficult to keep a clear head. You didn’t dare look him in the face lest others saw your own and recognized their princess.

“Understandable. It must be the plant I brought with me. The scent is all over my clothing. Erm, anyways.” He handed your spotted baby back to you.

Well, he was until a wide blade separated the two of you, “Why are you bothering this royal, commoner?” the strong man spat.

“They aren’t bothering--”

“Don’t you know who this is?” Your head guard snarled. “This is prince Kim Namjoon from the land of Korea. PRINCE! Don’t you see that you shouldn’t even be speaking to someone of his stature?” He pointed his sword at you, and you wanted to laugh. “Know your place, you filthy peasant.”

I scoffed and used two fingers to get his blade out of my face, “Oh, I’m not the one forgetting his place, Mahu.”

Hearing his name come out of your mouth caught him off guard, but he was probably used to being called Mahorrible or Mahidious as most others did. Fiercely loyal to the crown and anyone under it but an ego larger than the tax. Well, more like his loyalty was to your father and anyone he commanded Mahu to look over.

“Look again and tell me who is a filthy peasant.” your eyes would catch too much attention here, so instead you showed him the royal emblem on my wrist after lowering your bracelets.

An ankh. It had been burned there when you were 13 as a part of your official entrance into the royal family, the border had been tattooed around it. No one but the royal family had this symbol on their skin in such a place in such a way. If anyone was found to be copying it, they’d be killed. Simple as that.

Mahu gasped and lowered his blade, “My deepest apologies, Princess (Y/N).”

He stepped aside and Qasab Alsukar was in your arms once again. You froze as you took in the beautifully tanned face before you. Angled eyes and beautiful lips. Prince Namjoon gave a flat smile as he returned your kitten to you. He was attractive and kindness radiated from him. A good leader by his stance. Your Alsukar purred on your shoulder even as you scolded him for being such a troublemaker. Then he was put back into your basket.

“Thank you for being kind to him.”

“No worries, Princess. I adore animals. May I ask his name?” He spoke my tongue well.

“Qasab Alsukar.” I said. “Sugar Cane.”

“Wait,” Mahu said. “What are you doing out of the palace, princess?”

Oops, “I’m er...shopping?”

“Unattended?” He asked. “You know your father wouldn’t approve. Seize her!”

“I’ll see you at the palace, princey.” You ducked out of the way of one of the guards trying to grab at you.

Careful as a kitten for sure. You sprinted away from the guards who your father had trained personally. Passing by a stall, you placed down coins and grabbed a sharp pair of earrings. You threw them and it hooked one of the guard’s pants to an awful painting. The other did the same, but to a wooden stall.

The weapons villa would be up ahead, but not before the flower vendors. You grabbed a rose and the closet girl with the largest nose. Put them together and shoved them in the way of the oncoming captors. Guard Hannu stopped to make sure she was ok even as the others rushed passed him.

Iset was up ahead, “Girl, where have you--”

“Run!” You yelled and pulled her hand.

Her eyes widened as she saw who pursued you, “Oh my god, you got caught?”

“They had my kitten and Mr Mahidious threatened me. I had to reveal myself!”

She sighed, “Sure. Whatever. Left!”

“But the weapons are right!”

“Left!”

You followed her command and you two turned left in sync. The sex workers. Of course. You grinned as you two ran inside, payed for a service, and let them distract the rest of your pursuers. Then the pair of you lept onto a cart and pulled yourselves up onto an awning to the rooftops. After crossing a few buildings and no longer hearing the clank of iron against stone, you two stopped to breathe.

Then after making sure the coast was clear, you both went back to the palace and into her guest bedroom. You quickly changed into your off duty princess outfit and hid any signs of having left the palace walls behind the bed. The quick sound of footsteps were getting closer and your simple bracelets were still on! No royal would dare wear these. They’d rather wear nothing.

As the door swung open, you and Iset were staring at the pages of a book. Both of you looked simple and unassuming. Alsukar purred in your lap, playing along.

“Good afternoon, daughter.” Your dad stood in the doorway. Something must’ve ruffled his feathers.

You turned your head towards him, “Good afternoon, father. Did you need me for anything?”

He smiled, “No. I just wanted to see you, and you weren’t in your room. Are you feeling better?”

You had been sick this past week, and so you had been unable to see the foreigners when they arrived two days ago. Then again, you had just been milking it since you’re sure they were trying to get one to marry you. So you didn’t want to see them.

“I’m better than I was yesterday.” You coughed into your forearm.

Maybe because you were holding back your heavy breathing and had to let it out somehow. It slightly startled Alsukar but he was ok.

“That’s good.” Father said with a smile. “Hopefully, you’ll feel better before our guests leave.”

Doubt it. “I hope so too, father.”

He sighed, “Well then, I’ll see you later, my darling. I love you.”

“I love you too.”

He closed the door, “Mahu!!!!”

You and Iset let out sighs and gave each other a successful look. Then you two closed the books. Iset demanded to know what had happened, in detail. So you told her about the royal in too many layers. His gold and blue garments. Kim Namjoon. A Korean prince. He was the one that traveled 5k miles for what? Your hand in marriage? He was not getting that so easily.

“Why must I get married in order to have the throne? I can rule on my own!”

“It’s all political. If you do not love him, take a lover. Several if you must. I’m sure he’ll do the same, anyways. Who knows? It might even be the same one.”

You scoffed, “I don’t want to share my kingdom. Why would I share anything else with him?”

Iset hugged your arm, “You know it’s not just about you, right? Your people need protection and connections. The best way to do that is to assure a treaty or such through marriage.”

“I know. It’s just. We constantly are being fed stories about those who marry for love. For girls and knights and princes and princesses who fall in love. Whose souls become one with just a glance.” You balled your fists together in excitement and pulled them to your chest.

Then you let them fall and started to imitate a large cat by prowling in Iset’s direction, “That is not what I felt, and I do not want him chasing me like I’m something to be hunted  and then mounted for his viewing pleasure.”

She fell on the bed, and you straddled her and held her arms back and went in and snapped your teeth a hair’s length away from the tip of her nose. Mounted and eaten were two things you did not want to be.

Your best friend smiled at you in bemusement and laughed, “You don’t even know him, (Y/N). And what you do know doesn’t sound so bad. He enjoys plants and animals of all sorts!” She chuckled. “In fact, he sounds like a perfect match for you.”

“Traitor of my heart!” You look at her in shock and get off the bed, “I cannot be won by some simple scent and affection for a precious beast.”

“Mrow.” Qasab Alsukar said and looked towards the door.

Your sister arrived with Glitter on her heels. The cat greeted her son and then went to your fish in the basket. As you unwrapped her lunch for her, you asked your sister what she needed.

“Iset, your husband has arrived. Also, sister, mother wants you to sort through your gifts as quickly as possible.”

“My gifts?”

cass was born into a normal life in the quaint town of mystic, connecticut. her dad was a lawyer, and her mom was a high school teacher. on weekends her and her siblings ( a wc ! ) would go biking around the town. they lived an ordinary life.

in her childhood home, they had a mighty oak in their backyard -- in its branches was a treehouse. one day, as she was climbing down on the ladder, she missed a rung and fell. ‘shattered spine,’ the doctor said to his associate. ‘poor kid won’t walk again.’ he ate his words twenty minutes later, during a follow-up. 

when it came to their attention that their daughter was one of the many ... powered individuals, her parents immediately knew that they had to move to carson. being a high school teacher, mrs. castillo knew exactly how quickly she might become ostracized.

the family moved as soon as possible. it wasn’t difficult for cassandra to become adjusted. she wasn’t carson born, but she was carson bred. carson is her home. she doesn’t really see herself leaving. not unless she has to. 

in terms of personality, cass can be extremely self-centred and the only other people she cares about are the people she’s close with. she kind of vain, and enjoys the limelight. despite that, she’s not sold on the whole hero schtick. cass doesn’t want to give up her life for some shitty part time job with no benefits other than self gratification

cassandra is reckless. since she knows she can’t get seriously injured, she deadass doesn’t give a shit about her physical being. in high school, when she was on the cheer team, she was notorious for risking the most dangerous stunts. she was a nightmare and was top priority for waivers and permission forms.

something that cassandra has never mentioned about her powers? even though she never retains the damage, she feels it. her body is plagued with phantom aches and she’s constantly in a mood because of the horrifying migraines she experiences in thanks to the dozens of concussions she’s should’ve had.

FRANKLIN WAN !

frankie was born in chicago, a hub of life. he’s a big city boy. he loves the hustle and bustle of the city. he likes being able to get pho on a thursday night and finding a mcdonalds when he turns a corner.

he’s a family boy -- everything he does is for his family. growing up, it was just him and his mom. his mother was a kindhearted woman who did her best raising him. she had no choice, though. his father was a kind man who was far too fucking trusting. he stepped into a fight with two people people with powers. he got killed because of it.

frankie’s never gotten over that prejudice inside of him. he hates people with powers. which makes his current employment an interesting predicament to find himself in.

the contrast between chicago and carson makes his head spin. there’s so little to do in maine. still, when he can ignore the presence of the powered people, he can almost think of carson as... calming. 

as one might’ve noticed, he is a very quiet person. usually, he’s very level headed and calm. he prefers to be left to his own devices.

frankie doesn’t really have a temper, but he is extremely unforgiving. he holds grudges like there’s no tomorrow. he leaves his anger to simmer, but will never speak it outloud.

the bottom line is that frankie hates people with powers. he blames them for his dad’s death and he’ll always childishly cling to that hatred.

The Death Curse Ch. 2

After episode 13.15, where the girl who flirted with Sam died, I couldn’t help but think about Sam’s poor reputation with women… So then I got the idea to fix it with a fic. But I have to break it real good first, so, uh, strap in I guess?

The mountains of Tennessee were thick with the humidity and heat of summer. Sam, Dean, and Y/N itched to peel off their layers, climbing steps to a mountainside home where strange accidents had been occurring. Sam kept his hand light on Y/N’s back on the way up, wary of her stumbling feet. The accident history at this house compounded his concern, and he avoided looking behind him down the the mountainside. Dean and Y/N doubted Sam’s concerns. They thought the stairs collapsing and the wires fritzing sounded more like faulty construction than supernatural beings. Sam was convinced that less-than-normal forces were to be blamed.

On the porch, Sam knocked, tapping his knuckles beside the screen door in the absence of a doorbell. He noted the smell of new wood and the pristine stain of the railings and planks beneath his feet. He lifted his home inspector badge as the screen door opened. A man dressed in stained jeans and a plaid button opened the door. The prominent lines around his eyes creased up with suspicion at the neatly dressed people standing on his front porch.

“Can I help you?” he said, staying behind the screen door.

“We’re here to take a look at the house. We need to make a report about the accidents that occurred here a few days ago,” Sam said.

“I thought the reports had already been made.” The man clutched the handle of the door tighter.

“Our division specializes in abnormal accidents. Our report will be supplemental to the others. They wanted a second opinion, for insurance purposes,” Sam added.

“Let me see those cards again.”

Each of them held their badges up against the door so the man could see them clearly. Once he had scrutinized each one, he opened the door.

The inside of the home smelled of fresh wood and paint like the outside. The first accident was easy to spot. The front door opened into an entryway. Stairs lined the right wall, and a gaping hole engulfed the center of the stairs. Pieces of wood stuck out like gnarly teeth. The rest of the staircase was pristine, but the entire structure was roped with caution tape.

The man veered to the left into his living room where his teenage daughter sat on the sofa, tapping away at her phone.

“Laurie, can you sit in the kitchen please? I’ve gotta talk to these men about the house.”

Laurie looked up, pieces of her dark brown hair hanging in her face as she eyeballed every person in the room. She sighed and rolled her eyes before peeling herself off the sofa and leaving the room.

“Sorry ‘bout her. She’s having trouble adjusting to our new living arrangements.” The man gestured for them to be seated.

“That’s ok, Mr…” Sam said.

“Walls. Dave is fine.”

“Dave,” Sam smiled, “Are you both sleeping in here?”

“Yeah, living, eating, sleeping. We can’t get upstairs at all and Laurie’s annoyed at the delayed construction.”

“Delayed?” Dean asked.

Dave nodded. “We’ve been renovating the house. Which makes the accident more puzzling. Those stairs are brand new. They shouldn't have collapsed. You guys will be looking into the construction company that built those, right?”

“Of course,” Sam said. “Now, it was your wife that was injured during the accident?”

“Yeah, Carrie. She was right in the middle of it when it collapsed. She broke a wrist and had internal bruising because of the whole thing, so she’s in the hospital. I wanna sue, but my money’s tied up in this renovation right now.”

“Can you tell us about the other accidents?” Y/N said.

“Well, there was all the electrical going out at the same time. Which was weird for the same reasons as the stairs. It’s all new. And then...something else weird happened this morning. I was up on a ladder outside trying to finish some painting on the siding when my ladder started rocking. I almost fell off, but grabbed onto the gutter and steadied the thing. I looked down, but nothing was down there and there wasn’t any wind, let alone a gust strong enough to do that. I don’t know if that has to do with y’alls work, but renovations on this house sure are becoming difficult.”

“That information helps,” Sam said.

Before anyone could say anything else, the sound of breaking glass threw them all off their seats. Y/N thought their whole china collection fell off the shelves.

“Laurie!” Dave ran into the kitchen, Sam, Dean, and Y/N following close behind.

Laurie was stood up from her chair, gaping at littered glass all over the floor. A cabinet door over the counters was opened and it looked as if every single one of their glasses had fallen out of the cabinet and onto the floor.

“What the hell is going on?” Dave shouted.

“I didn’t do anything!” Laurie said. “They just fell.”

“Here, I’ll help you clean it up,” Dean said, trying to diffuse some of the tension. “They’ll just go inspect the stairs.” Dean looked back to Y/N and Sam.

They understood at once and left the room together.

“Ok, I’m beginning to believe your theory,” Y/N said quietly, “But what do we know about that could be causing all this? Electrical problems, glasses flying off shelves. Seems pretty random.”

“Maybe a poltergeist,” Sam pondered, walking the length of the stairs. He tugged on some of the railing, testing its strength. It didn’t budge. “That could explained what happened in there.”

“And the electrical failure,” Y/N added as she walked to the foot of the stairs. She began inspecting the construction, testing out the first two steps. She crouched down, each of feet on separate steps, and examined the place where the stairs and the wall met. There were no gaps, no cracks, and the stairs didn’t creak. This couldn’t have been a structural failure.

“Y/N! Watch out!”

Y/N tilted her head up just in time to see an object out of the corner of her eye. She threw herself to the floor and a large family picture fell on the spot where Y/N had been crouching. The crash and shattering glass sent Dean, Dave, and Laurie rushing into the foyer.

Sam helped Y/N up, inspecting her for cuts and bruises as she dusted herself off.

“What just happened?” Dean said.

“I think that picture frame just tried to kill me,” Y/N said, staring at the shards of glass at her feet.

Sam dropped his hands from Y/N, but stayed close. The poltergeist was starting to get out of hand, and Sam wasn’t fond of the idea of anyone being in here.

“Is there a place you guys can stay?” Sam asked. “A family’s house or a motel? With all these accidents happening…”

“Yeah… I’d been considering it myself,” Dave said, “Did you find anything?”

“We’re not sure,” Sam said, “but we have a couple theories.”

“I don’t want to live in a motel,” Laurie protested. “It’s bad enough here,” she muttered under her breath.  

“Laurie. That’s enough. Go pack up your things.”

Laurie did nothing but stand there, staring down her dad.

“Go!” he shouted.

Laurie stomped into the back of the house, huffing as she went. A door slammed in the distance.

Dave ran a hand through his hair. “I’m sorry, she’s- she’s not adjusting to life here. And then her mom was hurt. She hates being here.”

“It’s ok,” Y/N said, “I had my fair share of a bad attitude as a teenager.”

Dave smiled smally at Y/N. “I guess moving’s hard on anyone.”

“We’ll get you back into your house soon,” Sam assured him, matching his weak smile. Poltergeist’s could be a real bitch to banish.

Two hours later, after a bite to eat and a change of clothes, the three inspectors were back at Dave’s home performing a more thorough and appropriate inspection of the home. They brought all the necessary tools: salt, iron, guns, and ingredients for a banishing spell. Sam knew that the easiest and most successful method of cleansing a home of a poltergeist was banishment. But in case any of them were wrong, they searched for another explanation for the accidents, pulling up mattresses, looking in window pains, and emptying cabinets to rule out curses and hex bags. When the downstairs had been cleared, Dean insisted on continuing upstairs. He went outside and found the ladder that Dave must have been using earlier. He brought it inside proudly, propping it up against the railing of the small balcony at the top of the stairs.

Sam took one look at the rusted screws and splintered wood and marked it off as a bad idea. “I don’t think that ladder is going to hold any of us.”

“It will hold Y/N! She’s the smallest,” Dean said. “We need to search upstairs, somebody’s gotta do it.”

Sam hated this idea. Y/N had a sword and picture almost fall on top of her, and she fell into his closet the night before. He wasn’t confident in her abilities to navigate the rickety ladder, and when he gauged her response, she wasn’t thrilled either.

“Couldn’t we just...jump across the hole?” she said.

“I think that would be more dangerous,” Sam said.

Y/N bit her lip. “Yeah... Ok, I’ll do it. But Dean Winchester, you hold that ladder steady or so help me god!”

“I’ve got the steadiest hands around, sweetheart.”

Y/N doubted that, but she placed her feet on the first rung and gripped the sides anyway, careful to avoid splinters. The first rung held her weight and she sighed in relief, continuing her climb. She kept a steady pace, keeping her eyes on her hands and her feet, testing out each rung as she went. As she got closer to the top, she moved a little quicker, anxious to get the climb over with.

She was close to the balcony, so she reached a hand out and placed her left foot on the next step to propel herself. Her hand was millimeters from the railing when the wood snapped and she slipped.

She screamed and stuck her hands out to grab anything. They made contact with the balusters, and she gripped them tight, her body was dangling in the air.

Sam and Dean watched from the floor, horrified and helpless. Sam had moved to stand underneath her, his arms reaching up enough to touch her ankles, but not enough to give her a boost.

“You’re going to have to pull yourself up, can you do that?” Sam said.

“Sure. Piece of cake!” Y/N grunted and inched her way up, then swung one foot up to wedge it between two balusters. It slipped, sliding her back to her original position. She threw her head back and groaned, then tried again. This time it worked. She pushed herself up with her foot and then grabbed the railing. When two feet were firmly planted on the edge of the balcony, she climbed over, taking a brief moment to pause once her feet were on solid ground.

She looked down over the balcony. Dean was beaming. Sam had his hands on his hips. “Uh guys, how am I going to get down from here?” she asked.

Sam frowned more, if that were possible.

“We’ll get to that after you search the upstairs,” Dean said.

Y/N rolled her eyes and stepped away from the balcony. She’d rather get this over with.

She started with a large bedroom belonging to the parents. Male and female clothes hung in the closet, and two nightstands littered with magazines, tissues, and contact cases sat on either side of the bed. Y/N began a rapid search, throwing pillows to the floor and lifting the mattress without care for the neatly-tucked sheets. She pulled open drawers and rummaged around inside, then pulled out shoes and boxes from inside the closet. Underneath the bed there was only dust bunnies, so she moved on to the bathroom, then a small guest room, and then Laurie’s room.

Her bedroom was less bare than the rest of the house. She had tacked band posters to the wall behind her desk. A laptop covered in stickers sat on top. A short bookshelf sat, stuffed with paperbacks, and her full-sized bed was decorated with a black duvet and fairy lights on the headboard. Her music collection was impressive, ranging from Led Zeppelin to Green Day to Blink-182. Y/N caught the names of most of her CD collection as she tore through the room, finding albums from bands she’d never heard of before. She pulled out books from the bookshelf, not bothering to read the covers until a peculiar one fell at her feet.

She picked it up, bringing it close to her face. She could smell the age on the book. The cover was deep red and the spine thick, the edges of the pages yellowed. Y/N ran her fingers over the raised markings on the cover. They were flowing vines, running down the front and circling the title. It was in a language she’d never seen before, even after sitting in on Sam’s studies. She flipped open the pages, finding the same language inside, decorated with intricate illustrations around the edges of the text. Her eyes landed on a drawing of a man in a red cap. He carried a short scythe and wore an evil grin on his face.

Books began flying off the shelves, pelting her. She threw her arms up in front of face and stumbled backwards until she hit a wall. When she opened her eyes, the man from the picture stood in front of her and disappeared just as quickly.

Y/N ran out of the room straight to the balcony, book in hand. “We have company! Get me down, now!”

Sam looked up at her frightened face, eyeing the book she carried. “What are you- Whoah, behind you!”

Y/N spun around just as the man swung his scythe in her direction. She ducked. When she looked up again, he was gone.

“Shit. Ok I’m throwing this book down!” She tossed it at Dean, who caught it easily.

“You’re going to have to trust me,” Sam said, “Lower yourself as far down as you can and I’ll catch you!”

Y/N closed her eyes for a second, wishing she didn’t have to do this but forcing herself to anyway. She climbed over the railing again and slowly lowered herself, dropping her feet and letting them dangle. It wasn’t long before she felt Sam’s hands at her ankles.

“I’ve got you. Just let go.” His voice seemed abnormally calm for the situation.

Y/N silently prayed for no sprained ankles or broken noses, but when she saw the apparition out of the corner of her eyes standing on the staircase, she squealed, releasing her grip and falling into Sam.

She more or less was cushioned by Sam, whose arms wrapped around her tightly. He stumbled backwards, but didn’t fall. As soon as her feet hit the ground, she tore herself from Sam’s embrace, grabbed his hand and pulled him out the front door. She didn’t stop running until she touched the Impala’s hood.

She was bent over, gasping for her breath until she heard Dean ask about the book. She stood up and snatched it, opening to the page with the illustration. She held it out, placing one finger on the drawing of the man with the red cap.

“We’re not dealing with a poltergeist.”

Chapter 17

They go the next day sightseeing, Sarutobi buys several souvniers for his family in the city and they take a detour to the beach, they take a walk as the sea wets thier feet

Sarutobi(looking at the horizon): its beautiful...the sea....the sunset must be amazing once the sun goes down

Akamari(next to him): it is...when I was a kid my dad would bring me and my sister here to build sandcastles and watch the sunset before we headed home

Sarutobi(smiling): you must of had a good childhood...and had alot of friends

Akamari: I wouldnt say that....here i wasnt as popular and i only had two friends Briuno and Samara my assistant...i was very quiet as a child and not good at making new friends...and was also an outcast...until i met my cousins and you....my personality started to come out and I got confident since then

Sarutobi: bullshit...theres no way...

Akamari: fine dont believe me...but its true...i still struggle with it sometimes

Sarutobi(scoffing): sorry its hard to imagine you like that

Akamari(sad): I dont expect you to...just wanted to share something I've never told anyone

Sarutobi(feeling guilty): Akamari...im sorry....i thought you were really joking

Akamari: its ok dont get upset....its just i thought we can share something about ourselves

Sarutobi(realizing): people misjudge me...and it angers me...because they think I'll lose my temper like my father...which I hate because they act nice instead of telling me how it is...or correcting me because I look like a terrifying beast. When I'm not around they talk about me saying how terrifying I look and to just be cautious of me to not anger me. Which is totaly false....I can take critisim very well because of my mother...when she gets angry she tells me how it is and doesn't sugarcoat shit...she always says it better that way to clear the air...one of the reasons my dad loved her...because they were open about things and never acted like the other shoud figure it out...if she didnt like something she told him and wasn't afraid to hurt his feelings...and he did the same letting her know about his dislikes

Akamari(amazed): wow...and I thought your mom was together with Kama-kun because she understood him and knew how to calm his anger

Sarutobi(jealous): why do you call my dad kama-kun....even when we were kids you would call him that?

Akanari: because....my mom called him that...she gave him the nickname

Sarutobi: as a form of affection....towards my dad....I wonder did my dad really loved her...more than my mother....to be honest it angers me that Kawaki loved someone more than my mom

Akamari(stopping): to be honest...you are lucky Terrubi....you have a family you can come home to...but I dont have that...I mean I love Souske and Samari very much but I feel like a stranger when I'm around them....

Sarutobi hugs her, he stays hugging her for a few minutes

Sarutobi(looking at Akamari): dont say that....ever again....you do have people who love you...I know it was a shocker to both of us to find out the truth...and its not easy for you to wrap your head around the thought...

Akamari(asking): if we forget that we are not related for a moment....no...for a whole seven days....how would you spend those seven days with me...if we forget just for seven days....and you are just Sarutobi Madra and im just Akamari Uzumaki Uchiha....two strangers that just met...what would you do with me for a whole seven days?

Sarutobi(shocked): I.....I don't have.....an answer for that....

Akamari(disappointed): forget I said anything...(walking back to the car) are you coming...?

Sarutobi(goes behind her to hug her from behind): just give me time...to answer properly.....you caught me off guard whiskers...I promise to answer you when i have the answer...I'll give you the answer you are looking for

Akamari: ok....just dont take too long to answer....I'll be holding you accountable for a response....by the end of this trip....ok

Sarutobi: ok....i will....promise

They head to the car, they drive off, they come home and shower, Akamari is the first one out and heads to the living room to watch the movie...moments later Sarutobi joins her at the couch to watch the movie with her

Sarutobi: so what's the agenda for tomorrow...?

Akamari: I'll be busy the next few days...at Jerico's training....I'll be staying there till next Monday...are you going to be ok?

Sarutobi(upset): I'll be alone for five days...?

Akamari: no...Izuke said he'll keep you comany while I train...he'll stay here with you while I'm away....is that ok?

Sarutobi(disappointed): yeah i guess...( gets up and looks at Akamari) I'm kind of tired I'm calling it a night...see you when you get back

He heads upstairs to go to bed, in the early hours of dawn Sarutobi goes for a run...he returns as the sun is rising. He goes to check if Akamari is in her room. To his surprise she's already gone, he goes to the kitchen to prepare breakfast. Suddenly he hears a knock at the door....as he opens its Mariana...Akamari's neighbor

Mariana: hi...Sarutobi right...i just wanted to return the container she let me borrow...

Sarutobi: have you had breakfast yet?

Mariana: no why?

Sarutobi(offering): would you like to have breakfast with me?

Mariana: is it ok for me to be here....i don't want to intrude....

Sarutobi: no its no problem...besides Akamari went to train for a few days...she wont be back today...and i would like to get to know Akamari's neighbors

Mariana: ok i guess so

She enters and follows Sarutobi to the kitchen

Mariana(surprized): you made this...it looks delicious..and presentable

Sarutobi: my mom taught me how to cook...and when i had free time I'd get in the kitchen to practice when she wasn't home...and remember what ingredients she used on different dishes

Mariana(motivated): I know this is going to sound wierd....but here goes (looking at him egerly) do you think I can get cooking lessons from you Sarutobi?

Sarutobi(shocked): wait...you cant cook...

Mariana: honestly the last time i tried....my mom was angry and told me off horribly saying I'm a dimwit and should stick to studying

Sarutobi: I thought all moms taught thier daughters how to cook at the age of nine...

Mariana: well my mom wasn't that type of woman....and shes having a gathering and i want to prove her wrong that im more capable of being more than a usless bookworm

Sarutobi: then im in...but first lets start off with the basics(goes to the room and grabs his notebook) here learn this...its my notes they are colored corrdinated from ingredientes, seasonig, table mesures and heat temperature on different meats and meals...if its too difficult (hands her flash cards) these are examples of foods I made highlighted are the different subjects we talked about...to make it easier to understand

he’s twenty-one and a virgo , born in busan , south korea 

he found his way to london when his parents sent him away to study abroad highkey because that’s a big fancy thing in korea they can brag about and lowkey to get rid of him for as long as they can 

his relationship with his family is ..... interestingly strained . his parents WON’T admit that he’s tiring as hell to deal with and how much stress he causes because they try their best to be supporting/loving parents but honestly minjae KNOWS how much they just wISH he was fucking gONE from their lives ( okay maybe not THAT intense but things rlly blow up in his head ) but he doesn’t even worry about it he just deals with the fact that he’s a terrible son

he was diagnosed with odd when he was eight years old, after his mom got tired and increasingly concerned with his disruptive and violent behavior

a few years prior , minjae’s biological dad left them and his mom kind of took it upon herself to try and make it up to him . that meant she was always careful around him and treated him as if he was fragile because minjae felt some blame that his dad left . 

his biological dad did Not have any patience for his kid’s mental health , meaning he and minjae would fight often to the point of getting physical . basically minjae endured a lot of getting locked up in the bathroom kicking and screaming until his voice grew hoarse and the occasional ..... bad beatings .

he went to therapy with his mom for two years before entering middle school , around the time his mom remarried a nice guy who had the patience of a saint when it came to minjae , even after he repeatedly rejected him as a part of their life . eventually minjae managed to warm up to him ..... he just didn’t wanna admit he was afraid he’d abandon them like his bio dad . 

despite the therapy he was still unstable and got into frequent fights . he was smart but he didn’t put it into any good use because he would rather fool around and disrupt the classroom at any slight chance . teachers .... hated this fuckass 

theN high school !! A Whole Mess ..... he got worse and worse , and it wasn’t until he got expelled from his Second high school that he went back to therapy for anger management . 

after months of sessions w/ his therapist he was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder , which honestly explained Everything about his life . it explained his massive issues with interpersonal relationships , massive abandonment fear , massive moodiness , massive personality contradictions .... everythin g

he started b-boying because it was a way to push himself and let go of the anger without picking a fight with someone else ( altho he StilL picked the occasional fight .... highkey still does ) but he loved the control that came with dancing and how it hurt to push his body 

he managed to graduate despite what everyone thought ..... and even a bigger surprise is that he went to college majoring in math ..... and an evEN BIGGER SURPRISE is that he went overseas to study which is like ..... quite a difficult and impressive thing to do ..... tho minjae just finds math the easiest out of academic studies bc “all u need to do is understand and follow a formula” 

anYWAYS so his personality is generally very contradictory . he just has no fucking idea who he even is . thESE are from an old intro that i’m just putting here bc still tru:

being delusional w/ infatuation/love to the point of a fault vs running away when things actually start to go right with someone because of his fear of being abandoned by them

being so afraid of abandonment that he can’t stand being alone, always needs to be communicating with someone vs pushing people away when he feels like he’s getting attached because he’s afraid of abandonment 

swinging between being horny all the time and being sex repulsed

dhwani is from chicago , she’s 36 and a leo .... literally The Whole SUN

she grew up w/ a generally large family . two parents , three sisters and a brother . it was a full house that often became suffocating but she managed to survive her childhood and teenhood . 

she’s extremely close with all her fam except her dad , bc they have always disagreed in almost everything and it’s just ..... awkward to be around him ?? she honestly doesn’t respect him much , even if she would never show him/tell him that . her dad had an abusive past w/ her mom , and dhwani still feels a lot of resentment that he would ever lay his hands on her in a violent way and mistreat her despite being the mother of his children . when she was a teenager , she would tell her mom to just divorce him but her mom was in a very toxic/old mentality and believed she would ruin her family and her children’s life if she did that . 

probably nobody cared about this as much as dhwani .... she promised herself she’d NEVER allow someone to do what her dad did to her mom and was honestly so defensive with guys . little did she kno it was the lesbian raging inside her . 

so because she had no idea what a lesbian was or that it was a possibility bc her household was not the type to really go into the topic of sex at all , she eventually got into a relationship with a guy in high school that she could actually put up with .... and got really disappointed when she was finally ‘ in love ’ because of how underwhelming it all was . her dreams about finding ‘ the one ’ were absolutely gone . she was like wtf why are people making such a big deal out of love when it feels like ...... kind of nothing ?? 

she became pregnant with his child which was completely unplanned and was such a huge turn in her life that she never ever expected . all this time she had been driven to start a career in chemistry and family would come way wayyy later , however she did Not want to give up her child ..... she was so torn about it but now she thinks not getting an abortion was the best decision of her life bc her little boy , one of her two little suns was brought into the world . 

she paused her career to raise him w/ her now husband when she was 29 , and three years later became pregnant again , this time w/ her second sun , an adorable lil baby girl . things were already going downhill in her marriage before she got pregnant again , though , and she stupidly thought that maybe another child would help them but ... wrong ! her husband , the man she thought she loved , was turning out to be exactly like her father . she put up w/ him for as long as she could .... but it did just not work out . when her daughter was two and her son five , she divorced him and someway or another managed to pick up her career again . 

she moved out with her kids into a small apartment , struggling with money and having to ask her parents for aid which wasn’t rlly good for her pride , despite that she and her mom were like best friends .

sHE made it to london by pure will after juggling her two children and working as a high school teacher , though when she got an offer to teach as a professor in a university w/ heR OWN LAB AND RESEARCH TEAM she could Not pass it up . the only problem was tht this job was across the ocean , and away from her family and everything she and her children knew . 

still , she saw a brighter future , not only for herself but especially for her kids , so she packed up and said goodbye to the states . 

she’s been teaching in soho for two years now and she still hasn’t really adjusted . it’s obviously a very different life than the one she had in chicago , but she’s very determined to make it work . also she’s recently discovering her repressed inner lesbian so hmu for plots !!! ;))) 

shE’S a chemistry professor so ... @ any student connections hmu ... also any students whomst want 2 be on her research team A++ 

pERSONALity wise .... she’s a mess . she’s very lively and warm and inviting , but she is also extremely stubborn and unrestrained . you don’t agree w/ something she does ? Suck It . you have a stupid opinion ? Time to let u kno how absolutely wrong u are . she is NOT afraid of a fight . also she’s v scatterbrained .... there is so much on her schedule that she can barely keep up w/ so she’s never like ... calm . always going somewhere , always pacing places , chugging her coffee , carrying 789479 folders and books everywhere .

probably one of the least chill professors on campus in the best way possible . she’s so excited about chemistry and teaching her students . altho she is lenient and understanding she can also b strict af and doesn’t allow her kindness to b taken advantage of . rlly good at drawing lines . 

also her children are her whole world and she loves to brag about them ... since she doesn’t get enough time w/ them at home she sometimes takes them to her lab on campus or they’re there being a mess during her office hours and stressing her out but she’s 2 fond of them to leave them w/ their babysitter .

his childhood wasn’t chill at all . he grew up with four sisters and three brothers , so his parents never really had time for all of them individually . they were always kind of lumped together despite the differences in age . santana was one of the middle children so he got evEN LESS attention . 

he honestly does not understand what his parents were thinking when they had EIGHT whole kids , because they were poor as shit . they lived in a tiny house with three bedrooms and two bathrooms , where all the girls would be in 1 room , the boys in the other , and their parents in th third one . you could Not catch a moment of peace in this household . they basically lived on top of each other .

his older siblings were very bad influences , and so were his parents . it was all tough love , so he barely received any kindness or special treatment and had 2 go to school even if he was dying w/ the flu and got hit Bad when he acted out even a little bit bc his parents were Not about to deal w/ any disrespect . he actually pretty much got hit for just existing bc his parents didn’t want dumb kids and santana was failing in Everything at school so his dad especially tried to beat it into him but really he wasn’t dumb he had dyslexia and no one knew or cared enough to find out .

still , they didn’t really respect their children enough to demand their respect . they would cuss all of them tf out and allow them little to no privacy so they all became rEALLY GOOD liars , and all of them learned to have each other’s backs but rlly this only lasted during their childhoods/teenhoods . 

santana started doing really stupid shit during high school and once he got caught stealing wine from a grocery store w/ all his dumb little high school friends whomst were in possession of weed and ended up in juvenile prison for two years until he turned 18 . thEN while he was on parole he didn’t learn his fucking lesson and his parents/family were not supportive At All honestly it’s like they didn’t give 2 shits that he was in juvie they were just like ‘that’s what happens when you’re a goddamn moron’ so santana went out and did it aGAIN bc fuck parental guidance anyways

this time he got caught stealing a whole fucking car and in possession of not only weed but cocaine so he got locked up for 4 long ass years . honestly thought that he wouldn’t make it out but he rlly learned a lot in prison and he was used to getting no privacy anyways and just kinda dealt . the prison system he was stuck in Sucked so bad though like the guards were the Worst and he’d try to stay out of fights but Some Fucker would piss him off and BOOM he’d end up in the hole for a whole week . 

hOWEVER if it wasn’t for being there he would’ve never discovered his passion of art and drawing . he got Really Fucking good bc he had nothing else to do but sit around and try to find anything to pour all of his pent up energy into and drawing happened to be his greatest outlet . would just sit for as long as they let him and draw his time away . 

when he got out he went back to his fam but they were pretty much all split up . shit went Down while he was locked up and somehow his parents ended up w/ a giant grudge on their children and some of his siblings wanted to kill each other while others had just completely moved away to different parts of the states and had absolutely no communication w/ each other . 

santana decided to fuck it and pursue his dreams of being a tattoo artist far from LA and just decided to move to a different country entirely . 

Now u can find him giving tattoos in his apartment bc he doesn’t have enough $$$ to get a studio and while he Is training under a professional he’s not getting paid by them so he needs to make money somehow . it’s a secret that he’s tattooing when he’s not supposed to tho . Fuck the law . 

personality !!!! he’s basically .... very chill .... perhaps 2 chill .... 

even tho drugs got him some bad time in prison he hasn’t left them . still very 420 friendly and occasionally does the hard stuff . also loves 2 drink and party . 

he’s irresponsible !!!! he feels like he lost a lot of his life in prison so he’s trying to make up for it and while he’s being more careful ..... he still loves 2 fuck shit up .

he gets way too comfortable around people way too easily . he thinks this is a trait he picked up in jail bc he rlly had no other option but to shower with a bunch of dudes and shit out in the open , so he’s very comfortable with his body and being in the nude in general . also a touchy guy , likes cuddles and appreciates hugs . random meaningless touches are a Habit . 

he loves to hang and do whatever so if ur his friend chances are tht he’s hitting u up 24/7 to go do something . biggest extrovert there is . does not get tired of being in public / around people . also p flirty and gay as hell .

Days gave way to weeks and weeks to months. Time seemed to be a relative concept in the Pitts residence that seemed to race by and change frequency at will. To Melody, it felt like just days ago she told her parents they were leaving, and now they lived in a beautiful home far away from anything they had ever known. Just yesterday, they learned about tea leaves in therapy, and now their marriage was stronger than ever. Where did the time go? What happened in between? It was all a blur.

To add to the household anxiety, River and Melody had no say in their future residence. Just as they were learning to trust each other again, they had to trust the S.I.A. to do right by them. The mystery could have eaten at them, skyrocketing the household anxiety levels, but River and Melody turned the stressful situation into a game. Over dinner, they would speculate about the house and state their wishes for it. When moving day came, they took only their most precious possessions and boarded a plane to nowhere. At least that’s where it felt like they were going. When they landed, Melody surveyed her family. River and Harmony seemed excited while she and Maurice were nervous. She couldn’t tell how Stefan felt. The house was a long way from the airport, and she feared they were going to be living in the middle of the woods or something. To her surprise, however, the taxi did not take them to the forest but to the coast. She glanced at River who looked hopeful. It had always been his dream to live in a waterfront house and fish on his own property. Having the river in their backyard in Willow Creek was good enough although he didn’t really enjoy fishing in the river. To everyone’s delight, the taxi stopped in front of a house right on the beach.

That day was just a couple of months ago, and everyone had settled in quite nicely. The children seemed to adjust well to the new school although the time change wiped them out; Melody thought they’d be used to it by now. River enjoyed being a semi-retired man, living his dream being a fisherman. His ribs were still on the mend, and fishing probably wasn’t the best idea yet, but he did it anyway. Melody continued her same routine, but she was so much happier. Everything was finally the way it should have been. Some days she would walk to the beach, look out at the ocean, and thank the Watcher for preserving them. She didn’t want to believe that all those hard years, the kidnapping, and everything was meant to be to bring them to this place, but it sure seemed that way.

After staring at the ocean, she’d watch her husband enjoy what he loved. She never saw his face or heard him saying anything, but she knew there was immense joy inside. River was naturally chilled and calm, but in those days the calmness seemed to run deeper. She couldn’t explain it, but he was different. The calm wasn’t a weakness. It was a quiet strength, a strong force to be reckoned with. She admired it and wished she could be more like him. He anchored her.

River chuckled. “Am I an exhibit at the museum?”

She blushed. “Sorry.”

“You can join me, you know. I don’t mind the company.”

She smiled bashfully and walked to him.

“What’s on your mind?”

“Nothing. My parents will be here soon.”

He looked at his watch. “Oh snap. Thanks, Bae. I’ll finish up.”

There was a knock at the front door, and Melody’s heart leaped with joy. She and River had lived far away from them before, but she had gotten used to them being so close. Getting used to them not being a short taxi ride away had been harder than she anticipated. Through the glass door, she saw their beaming faces. She couldn’t help the tears that fell and threw her arms around her mother.

Bianca cried too. “Hello, baby.” She lingered in her daughter’s arms for a moment before she broke away. “Did you know that house next door is for sale?”

She chuckled at the random comment. “That house is ginormous, mom.”

“It’s no bigger than the Pruett Estate. Where’s the computer? I’m gonna see if someone can show it to us tomorrow.”

Melody rolled her eyes and pointed inside the living room. “It’s right there.”

“You know you can’t get rid of us,” Giancarlo said.

She embraced him. “Hi, daddy.”

“Hey, kiddo. I’ve missed you so much.”

“Where’s lover boy?”

“He should be coming in any second now. He fishes right on the beach.”

“Good for him. This house is great!”

“Thanks! You want the tour before he gets in?”

“Of course! Are the kids here yet?”

“They’re sleeping.”

“All of them?” Bianca asked from the other room.

“They’re still struggling with the time change.” She lead them upstairs. “Their rooms are up here.”

“They have their own rooms?”

“Mmm hmm.”

One by one, she slowly opened the kids’ rooms and let her parents peek in.

Back downstairs, Bianca turned to Giancarlo. “It’s only been half a year, but they’ve gotten so big! Right, babe?”

“Like weeds. What are you feeding those things, kiddo?”

She laughed. “Here’s the kitchen.”

“And, we finally have an en suite!”

“Oh good,” Bianca said. “Now the kids won’t pee in their pants while you two are–”

“MOM!”

Giancarlo chimed in. “And good thing their rooms are upstairs too.”

Melody stood there with her mouth gaped. “DAD!!”

“Oh yeah. Poor kids. We should have given them earmuffs for their birthdays.”

Her parents practically fell over themselves laughing at their own wit while Melody’s face reddened. Despite the fact that she was embarrassed by her parents discussing her love life, she couldn’t help but chuckle under her breath at the validity of their speculations. With River on the mend, and their marriage as strong as its ever been, she looked forward to making up the lost time in the seclusion of their new master suite.

When they returned to the living room, River was waiting for them. “What’s so funny?”

“Oh, we were just saying–”

“NOTHING IS FUNNY! Please, can we just move on?”

River chuckled. “Why you so red, Bae?”

“Move on!”

“Ok?”

“This is a nice place you got here, Riv,” Giancarlo said. “I hope you’re not going to tell us it was bought with drug money or something cray like that.”

Melody’s stomach began to churn. She hadn’t forgotten they needed to share with her parents what took place, but part of her wished they would just forget about it and simply enjoy being together again.

River quickly glanced at her. “Heh, not quite.”

“Ok, start talking, River. We didn’t fly all the way across the country for more cryptic talk!”

He nodded. “Straight to the point. I like that.”

Melody smiled and gave him an encouraging nod.

“Ummm…first, I want to apologize. After the story, you’ll understand, but I haven’t been truthful about my employment.”

Melody felt the air in the room get thicker. Her parents tensed up.

“Oh no. You are dealing drugs.”

“No, sir! I’d never do anything illegal. I…I got recruited by the S.I.A.”

Bianca’s face lit up, and she turned toward Melody. “He’s a spy! I guessed it, and you laughed at me!”

“I didn’t know that back then, mom.”

“Hmph. You implied that I was old and spent my retirement watching too many crime dramas.”

She chuckled. “That’s not what I–”

“Mmm hmm. Continue the story, Agent Pitts.” Bianca winked at him.

Giancarlo shook his head. “Hold on. You’ve really been working for the S.I.A. this whole time?”

“Yes, sir.”

“But…why? Were you guys struggling that much you had to get a job? You could have come to us. We could have helped.”

“It wasn’t like that. I was approached. This was right before Stefan was born.”

Bianca gasped. “The whole time you lived in Willow Creek?”

“Just about.”

River looked like he wanted to disappear, and Melody wished she were sitting next to him so she could hold his hand and help him power through the story.

“They told me Melody might be in danger. I didn’t have a choice. I did, but I felt like I didn’t. I had to protect her.”

Melody watched as her parents’ faces softened, and she breathed a sigh of relief.

“What was the danger?” Giancarlo asked.

She watched her husband struggle to answer and couldn’t imagine how difficult it was for him to explain to her father she could have been taken and sold off to be a sex slave. “Trafficking.”

River looked up at her and nodded as if to say thank you.

“Goodness gracious,” Bianca shouted. “That goes on in Willow Creek?”

Giancarlo’s head fell. Melody wondered what he was feeling.

“Yeah. Big time.”

Bianca shook her head. “Is any place safe anymore? Sheesh! No wonder you moved all the way over here. I mean, whoever heard of Brindleton Bay? How did you find this place anyway?” She paused for a brief moment and her eyes narrowed. “And what’s this business about not knowing where you’re going and not being able to tell us? And, you. She said you were hurt.”

“Mom, just let him finish.”

River took a few moments to collect his thoughts. In that moment, Melody considered what River must have felt like that day for the first time. She was so wrapped up in taking care of Harmony and dealing with her own conflicted feelings, she never truly thought about what River went through. The news of his true occupation was fresh, and everything had always been about the job. She only thought of his involvement in the incident within the context of the job. His poker face was so good, and he had become such a master at hiding his feelings, she failed to remember it was his own child he had to rescue. It was a weird thing to admit. Of course, she knew he fathered the child, but he had been so distant and so dedicated to this job she had grown to hate. But, sitting there, watching his leg twitch and him rubbing his hands together, she didn’t see Agent Pitts. She saw a scared man who almost lost his daughter and risked his own life to save her.

He cleared his throat. “They tried to take her.”

Bianca gasped.

Giancarlo was as stiff as a board. “Mel?”

“Harmony.”

The silence lingered in the air like the smell of fresh baked cookies…or the smoke that came from Giancarlo’s ears. Melody wanted to say something but knew they needed to process everything like she had. On one hand, she was glad they knew now, but on the other hand, she wished they didn’t need to know and hoped their new knowledge didn’t affect things.

“Well,” Bianca said, “I’m sure we can imagine the rest. Do you intend to continue your employment?”

Her tone was almost daring but a bit concerned too.

“I’m still employed, but I’m inactive. Until my ribs heal, I’m on medical leave. When that’s over, the permanent plan kicks in.”

“And what is that?”

“I guess you can think of it sort of like the witness protection program.”

“So, because this happened, they moved you here and intend to take care of you for the rest of your life?”

“Pretty much.”

“Riv,” Giancarlo said finally, “you’re an honorable man. Thank you for protecting my daughter and grandchildren.”

The tears escaped Melody’s eyes again. There were few moments when her father was completely serious, and they all had to do with the family. She couldn’t imagine her parents being angry at River but was still relieved to find out how pleased they were.

“My…you two are always full of surprises. Well, it’s all in the past now, and everyone is safe. That’s all that matters.” Bianca wiped a few tears before she changed gears. “The children have slept long enough, don’t you think?”

Melody smiled. “Yeah. Let’s get them up.”

As they marched upstairs, Melody thought about all the recent changes in her life. River had returned home. Maurice behaved better. They owned a beautiful home with enough space for everyone. Soon, her parents would be living nearby. From the outside looking in, it seemed her life was complete, but it wasn’t. One issue still lingered, and she hoped it wasn’t too late to fix it.

Eeazy Sleep Motel Cleveland Ohio May 4th 3:59am

Scully was hot.

Uncomfortably hot actually and through a haze of awakening senses she wondered if the air conditioning was malfunctioning. Sure, they had enjoyed an unseasonably warm spring this year, but the nights were still cool enough to warrant at least one blanket - if not two.

She flipped over on her back, groaning softly as she did so, feeling the tangled mass of sheets twisting around her legs. Her pajamas, usually so comfortable, felt like a lead weight against her burning skin, a fine sheen of perspiration making them cling unpleasantly to her.

"Wake up Dana...before Mom and Dad hear us..."

Melissa?

Scully burrowed her head further into the pillow, feeling it mould itself against her face, eyes closed and still half immersed in dreams she hovered on the edges of sleep.

"Go 'way Missy. It's too early..."

Her voice was soft, almost imperceptible.

Childlike.

Scully squeezed her eyes closed again. Determined that she should be permitted to drift back to sleep.

And then...

"Dana Katherine Scully, I expect you down here in five minutes. Don't make me come up there and fetch you!"

Scully's eyes flew open as she bolted upright, heart racing as the voice reverberated around her head.

MOM??

Blinking rapidly as her eyes adjusted to the darkness, Scully appraised her surroundings. Disoriented as she was by the unfamiliar room, it took her a couple of seconds to realize where she was.

Motel room.

Ohio.

Case.

A dream.

Nothing more.

Scully allowed a small smile to curve her lips as she remembered her mother's patented method of persuading her less than enthusiastic daughter to drag herself out of bed in the mornings. It was a threat she used on all her children, but only Bill had ever pushed her to the limits, testing her resolve with typical boyish arrogance, wondering just what fate would befall him if he chose to ignore his mother's warning.

She suspected that even her mother had not really thought it through enough to formulate a plan should one of her offspring not react to her calls. But the sight of Margaret Scully sweeping up the stairs, clutching the pitcher of freshly squeezed orange juice in her hand, would remain in Scully's memory forever.

They had followed her, giggling in in delicious anticipation -Melissa leading the way, Dana second with little Charlie tagging along behind, screaming with laughter as Margaret stomped into Bill's bedroom to deposit the pitcher's contents, pulp and all, squarely over his tousled head.

His eleven-year-old male pride had taken a severe battering that day. One which the whole family, but Dana in particular, had taken great delight in reminding him of throughout his teenage years.

None of the Scully offspring had ever been late down to breakfast again.

"I guessed that would work."

“What”?

Scully whirled around to confront the voice that came from somewhere to her right, reaching blindly for the gun she had left on the night stand as she did so.

It wasn't there.

Her hand groped wildly, connecting with nothing more substantial than fresh air, and her eyes widened as she realized that the dim outlines of the room's furniture had disappeared.

That the room had disappeared.

No longer tangled in sheets and blankets, she was surrounded by blackness.

An oily, all-consuming darkness that pressed in on her, stealing away her breath, squeezing painfully at her chest.

She was conscious of being in an upright position, although she could feel no surface beneath her bare feet.

This is a dream. I've fallen asleep again.

"You're not asleep, Agent Scully...but you're not exactly awake either."

That voice again, familiar in ways she as yet couldn't fathom, reaching out to her through the blackness.

A child's voice, but not a young child. There was no threat in the tone of the voice, in fact, it seemed devoid of any emotion at all.

And then, out of the darkness she began to make out the form of a young girl, a young girl who seemed vaguely recognizable as she came toward her, hand outstretched before her, she seemed to float toward Scully.

Like an angel, she was surrounded by a hazy ethereal glow that shimmered softly, undulating with every step she took. Her long blonde hair lay softly against her shoulders, and as she came closer Scully could make out the china blue eyes, eyes that seemed to penetrate her soul as they searched the face of the woman before her.

Scully saw no danger in those eyes, just a deep, yearning sadness that pulled at her heart.

The eyes of a child who has seen a lifetime of horror.

The eyes of a survivor.

She was conscious that the heat in the room had disappeared, to be replaced with a delicious coolness that washed over her body, a breeze lifting her hair to waft gently around her face as the child came to a halt before her.

Scully allowed herself to breathe again. She knew, somehow, that there was nothing to fear from this child, and she accepted the touch of the cool fingers that tentatively reached for her own, holding onto them as she locked eyes with her.

"We knew you'd come."

Scully shook her head.

"I don't understand. Why are you here?"

Her voice trailed off as Felicia Slabbert raised one slender finger until it rested against Scully's lips.

"Sssshhhhhh! Not here. He'll hear you. Come with me."

Scully tilted her face up toward the deep blue sky, feeling the warmth of the sun's rays against her skin.

She was seated opposite Felicia atop a grassy knoll covered in impossibly large daisies that attracted the most beautiful butterflies Scully had ever seen. An array of dazzling, ever changing colours, the butterflies dipped and danced between them, seemingly unafraid of their presence.

Off in the distance Scully could just make out the ocean, its surface made up of a million sparkling diamonds that caught the sun's rays. It should, by rights, have hurt her eyes, made her squint against the brilliance, but she found she could settle her gaze upon it without fear of harm.

It was so peaceful, with only the sound of twittering birdsong to disturb the peace and quiet of this green paradise.

For a long while they didn't speak, and Scully was content just to drink in her surroundings. She didn't pretend to understand what was happening, how she had gotten here, and truthfully, it just didn't seem matter.

The how and why were of no significance to her now.

"It's so beautiful," she ventured finally.

Felicia dropped her eyes to the ground. Busying her fingers, she plucked at a daisy, snapping its fragile stem with one deft action and holding it out toward Scully.

"Nothing is beautiful here, Agent Scully. It's all an illusion."

Scully watched in fascinated silence as the blossom in Felicia's outstretched hand began to writhe and twist against its confines. Its stem beginning to pulse sickeningly before it split halfway up, revealing a thick yellowish ooze that pooled against the girl's delicate fingers and dripped in glistening, squirming droplets to the ground. The grass beneath it withered instantly, curling and crisping as though touched by fire.

The blossom itself seemed to turn in upon itself, its centre splitting to reveal a nest of what Scully could only guess was the larval stage of some as yet unimagined insect. Nestled within the glistening folds of the flower, womb-like, protected by a thin layer of mucus, the insects turned lazily.

Feeling the bile rising in the back of her throat, Scully slammed her eyes shut.

This is a nightmare. This is not happening.

"Now look again, Dana."

And even while the ever present voice of reason was still screaming at her that this couldn't be so, Scully found herself acquiescing to the child's wishes.

She opened her eyes and focused on the daisy.

So white it appeared almost silver in the sunlight.

Beautiful.

Perfect.

Fragrant.

Innocent.

"Take it. It's OK," Felicia urged. "This is how you are meant to see it. It's always like this in the beginning."

"The beginning?"

Scully allowed Felicia to hand her the flower. Its stem was almost velvety in texture. Warm and soft in her hand.

"I don't understand. Where are we?"

"In the Dreamcatcher. Snared in its web like insects. Captured for eternity or until the sun burns us away. This is how it captures us. It lures us away with promises of sunshine, of everlasting summer days. Of a land where all our dreams come true....But slowly, slowly it shows its true purpose."

Scully felt her heart beginning to beat painfully against her chest as she listened to the child's words. This couldn't be happening. This was just a dream, brought on by Mulders words. Words that had lulled her to sleep.

"Its true purpose?"

Her voice sounded faint, far away, a faint buzzing in her ears making it difficult to think clearly.

Felicia's eyes filled with tears, which quickly began to make a glistening trail across her cheeks.

"It steals our dreams and leaves us only with our deepest nightmares."

She pointed to an area out of Scully's immediate field of vision, and closed her eyes as the woman before her twisted to see what it was that had commanded her attention.

The tears ran faster, unchecked, as Felicia finally broke down completely, slamming her hands over her ears in a vain attempt to block out the sound of Scully's screams.

5:05a.m.

"EMILYYYYYYYY!"

The sound of his partner screaming was enough to propel Mulder tumbling out of bed and halfway to the connecting door before the sound had even fully registered in his mind. His forward momentum carried him into Scully's room, and for a heart-stopping second he couldn't see her.

The bed, its covers rumpled, was empty.

But then, as he became fully aware, he heard her again.

Sobbing, rasping his name as she tried to draw breath.

Huddled in a corner, cheek pressed up against the wall, eyes squeezed tightly shut against whatever horror she had visited in her dreams to make her cry out her daughter's name, his partner whimpered softly.

Mulder clamped down on the basic urge to just get to her as quickly as possible and forced himself to approach slowly, cautiously. Right now he had no way of knowing whether she was asleep or awake.

He knew enough about nightmares though to be painfully aware that, even if it was not strictly true that waking someone in the grips of a bad dream could cause irreversible damage, it was certainly true that the sufferer would be disorientated. He had no wish to add to Scully's panic.

As he got closer, he could see her eyes had opened, her lashes wet with the tears that still clung to them. Beyond that, though, he had no idea as to her state of mind.

Careful not to touch her, he hunkered down in front of her, hardly breathing as he whispered her name.

"Scully?"

In response to his voice, Mulder was rewarded when her eyes focused on him.

Wherever she was, she could hear him.

Could recognize him.

But even as she relaxed slightly, he could see the lingering terror in her expression, and his throat tightened as he watched the tears once again pool in her luminous blue eyes.

"Ssshhh, Scully. It's okay. You're safe. It was just a bad dream."

Cupping her face in his hands, he used his thumbs to gently wipe the wetness from her cheeks. Still he hardly dared to breathe lest he frighten her more than she already was.

"Muh...Mulder?"

He had to strain to hear her. His name was the merest whisper on her trembling lips as she reached out for him.

"It's okay. Ssshhh, Scully. I'm here."

Then, as he watched the recognition snap into her expression, he allowed her to bolt into the security of his waiting arms, enveloping her in his embrace as she sobbed against his chest. Her hands clutched at his shirt as he rocked her gently against him.

In between her choking sobs, she managed to gasp out a few words, which although muffled, made some sort of sense to him.

A dream.

A nightmare in which her dead daughter had a starring role.

As real to her as he was now.

Mulder knew firsthand the numbing power of nightmares; too many nights waking up with the sound of his own screaming reverberating around his apartment had taught him well.

Seeking to calm her, he began to stroke his palm in rhythmic motions from the crown of her head to her shoulders, whispering assurances to her all the while. He was rewarded finally when her trembling stilled and she was able to once again lift her head from where she had buried it against the folds of his T-shirt.

"You okay?"

A shaky nod, a trembling smile that tore into his heart. She looked all of twelve years old and just as vulnerable.

"It seemed so real," she whispered. "Like I could reach out and touch her..."

Mulder caught her hands in his, quieting her.

"It was a dream, Scully. Just a dream."

Her hands were cold, and he realized that she was clad only in the thin satin pajamas he had seen earlier.

"You're freezing. Let's get you back to bed."

Fear flared in her eyes once again and she pulled away from him, cracking the back of her head solidly against the wall.

"NO! I don't want to go back to sleep."

Mulder winced.

Some nightmare.

Nevertheless, he persisted gently.

"Okay, no sleep. But you can't stay here, you'll catch your death..."

"Will you stay?"

Again, that same childlike whispering voice.

So unlike Scully it frightened him and he felt his eyes begin to burn with the tears that suddenly blinded him.

"Of course I'll stay. I'll always be here, Scully, you know that."

"Promise me, Mulder. Promise me you'll never leave me."

He caught her hands in his again, drawing her gently to her feet before pulling her toward him to embrace her again.

"I promise." He whispered.

CHAPTER NINE

Eeazy Sleep Motel. Cleveland Ohio 7:09am

Sleep had eluded Mulder for the remainder of the night.

The sound of his partner's screams seemed etched on his brain, resurfacing inside his head every time he closed his eyes, the sight of her terrified, tear-streaked face remained fresh in his mind, difficult if not impossible to ignore.

She had allowed him to lead her back over to the bed, not needing her permission to join her beneath the covers. He had recognized her need and acted upon it. As simple as that.

It had taken her a long while to stop shivering though, and even when he spooned his body around hers, he had felt the trembling continue. He had a feeling it had nothing whatsoever to do with her being cold and more of a reaction to what she had seen that night.

And it had scared him. More than he would ever tell her.

Eventually, her trembling had stilled, and she had reached over to grasp his hand in hers.

An unspoken acknowledgement that she was fine.

An unspoken thank you.

Mulder had held onto her long after her grip on him had loosened, listening to her breathing become sweet and even as she once more fell into sleep and despite sharing this space with her, he hadn't felt awkward. His body hadn't betrayed the way he felt about her, maybe because he recognized that she needed him there as a kind of protective force. Nothing more than that.

And, he had watched over her as she slept, carefully searching her face for any slight changes in expression that might signify that the demons were resurfacing. But she had remained quiet, hardly moving except to snuggle more deeply into his embrace.

How she would feel when she awoke was a different matter altogether.

Awkward? Maybe.

Ashamed that she had expressed the basic need to be comforted? Possibly.

Angry with herself? Certainly.

It wasn't Scully. It never had been, and no doubt she would be mortified when she finally opened her eyes and realized what she'd asked of him.

But right now, she was sleeping peacefully, and despite a burning need inside of him to face the day, Mulder was determined to let her rest for as long as she was able.

He didn't want to wake her up,  didn't want to see the walls slamming back into place as she once more drew away from him.

In his wildest dreams, he wanted her to open up to him, to talk about what had happened last night, to make sense of i, to accept it so she might eventually find some peace because he couldn’t help wondering just how many other times her daughter had visited her during her dreams. How many times had she awakened screaming Emily's name? One? Ten? A hundred? More?

How many mornings had she greeted him brightly as she crossed the threshold of the office they shared, while covering the heartbreak with a smile?

Mulder didn't even want to think about it.

It hurt too much to imagine her in a place where she felt she had to brave the hurt alone; that despite the trust they had in one another, they didn't allow themselves to trust enough when it really mattered.

They would walk to the ends of the earth for each other - of that he was certain - but admit to themselves that they needed help? Never.

It just wasn't their way.

He held his breath as, beneath the weight of his arms, Scully stirred slightly.

Not yet. I just need to hold you a little longer.

His unspoken yearning remained unanswered, however, as little by little his partner began to awaken.

And then he felt it - felt her body stiffen as she realized where she was, where he was, and she immediately sought to escape from his embrace.

Scully twisted her body around, as though to affirm that it really was Mulder who lay beside her in the bed.

Her bed.

Under different circumstances, Mulder might have laughed at the expression on her face but suddenly, nothing seemed very funny anymore. Maybe it was the fact that Scully was looking at him as though he were something particularly unpleasant she had just tracked in on the bottom of her shoe, or maybe it was the fact that despite what little sleep she had managed to grab the night before, she looked like death warmed over.

"Mulder?" she queried uncertainly.

"You had a nightmare. You were screaming," he offered by way of explanation and watched as his words finally registered.

"A nightmare?"

She sounded incredulous, and despite himself, Mulder felt himself becoming defensive.

"I don't remember..."

How the hell can you not remember, Scully? You shook in my arms for over an hour for Chrissakes...

“ It happened Scully believe me, I was there..." he supplied flatly.

Scully regarded him for a few seconds. A nightmare?

Nothing is as it seems here, Agent Scully.

Children screaming. 

Darkness. 

Bone and tissue.

And then it was gone, leaving her with only the vaguest sense of unease as she watched Mulder watching her.

Pulling herself together, she shrugged.

"I had a nightmare, you were there I accept that, but why are you here now? Why did you sleep in my bed?"

The words came out harsher than she had meant them to, and as the hurt washed over Mulder's face, she wished more than anything that she could pull them back in. Confusion as to what he was telling her had made her barriers slam back into place. She didn't refute what he was telling her, knowing with certainty that he would never lie to her about something like this so why couldn't she remember?

He swung his legs across to the opposite side of the bed and slowly got to his feet. He didn't look at her again, but his final words reached her just as he was about to head through the connecting door.

"Because you asked me to."

And suddenly, inexplicably, watching him walk away from her she felt like crying.

7:36am

"So what now?"

Mulder regarded his partner as she stood before him. With cosmetic application masking the shadows beneath her eyes, and her hair perfectly styled, she appeared the epitome of professional togetherness.

Scully's armour.

Firmly back in place.

Impenetrable even for him.

Especially for him.

She refused to meet his eyes, and the words were forced, stilted, as though she would much rather not be speaking to him at all.

He glanced at his watch and attempted to lighten the moment.

"Well, I don't know about you, but I was thinking maybe coffee and bagels..."

"I'm not hungry."

Three words. Three words that told him everything he needed to know.

I don't want to get into a situation with you, Mulder. I don't want to talk about what happened last night.

And suddenly, he was angry.

Don't do this, Scully. Don't fucking shut me out. You asked me remember. Don't pull this tired crap on me now. Not after what you said last night.

He sighed, ignoring the voice in his head. He was accustomed to disregarding it where this woman was concerned.

"Okay so what do you want to do? When's the autopsy scheduled? Nine-thirty, right?"

She nodded. Finally deigning to meet his eyes.

"Get breakfast. I'll meet you there."

Without another word, she turned on her heel and left him standing, staring after her in disbelief.

What the hell was going on here?

Coroner's Office. Cleveland Ohio 9:34am

Scully squinted against the bright light from the powerful overheads that lit the autopsy bay.

Only a couple of hours into the day and she felt like she was ready to fall back into bed. A headache had sprung up back at the motel, and despite dry-swallowing a couple of pain pills, Scully could still feel it stabbing viciously in the background. It had settled in the centre of her forehead, very similar to the headaches that had plagued her during her illness.

Her illness.

She wasn't sure when she'd blocked the word ‘cancer’ from her vocabulary. Just that it wasn't a term she consciously used anymore.

It was easier to just generalize, because by generalizing she could almost pretend it had never happened. Could pretend that it wouldn't again. Like hiding underneath the covers in an effort to protect oneself from the bogeyman. If you couldn't see him, he wasn't there.

If she didn't say the word cancer, it ceased to exist.

Simple, really.

Stupid.

She shook her head in an effort to clear it and once more turned her attention to the remains before her. It was tough to know exactly where to begin.

What had once been the body of Elizabeth Armstrong was now just a glutinous mass, glistening wetly from within a shallow plastic container.

Scully knew that should she even attempt to release it from its confines, Lilly Armstrong would in all likelihood disappear forever down the gaping drainage hole at the far end of the table.

What the hell had done this to her? And more to the point, why had it been done?

It was difficult to imagine that this mess before her had once been a human being. Much less a child.

Scully had seen some horrific sights during her time with the X- Files, bodies so horribly decayed that she had imagined their stench clinging to her skin hours, sometimes days later.

This was different somehow, not least because of the singular lack of any evidence to explain it in any logical way.

Scully sighed heavily. Nonetheless, it was her job to at least attempt to give this whole situation some kind of scientific meaning.

Dropping her head once more, she peered in closer to better sift through the wreckage beneath her. Carefully, almost reverently, she picked through the slivers of bone and tissue that had survived relatively intact, occasionally pausing to lift a larger piece out of the container. Transferring it to a smaller receptacle for further analysis later.

The irony did not escape her that there was in all probability nothing to find.

But she continued working. Methodical and thorough in her actions, her years of training had taught her that sometimes, even the tiniest clue might hold the answer to the most perplexing crime.

And then she saw it.

A tiny thread that glistened in the harsh light.

Strung as it was between two small pieces of bone, Scully's first assumption was that it might be a strand of hair. A single strand of Elizabeth's corn-blonde pigtail that had somehow survived whatever fate had befallen the child.

Carefully, she captured the thread between the tweezers' jaws, pulling softly, rewarded when, for the barest moment, the material slid toward her, and then...

"Shit!"

Scully cursed softly as the thread snapped, falling back against the bone. No, not falling. Floating. It floated gently downward, camouflaging itself perfectly against the surface. And suddenly Scully realized what it was she was seeing.

Children protected for all eternity beneath her web, sleeping peacefully beneath her silken strands.

Mulder's voice as he recounted his tale to her as she had hovered on the fringes of sleep...and another voice inside her head, deep down in her subconscious, clamouring to be heard.

Nothing is beautiful here, Agent Scully. It's all an illusion...

She backed away from the table, her eyes never leaving the spot where she knew the silken remnants of the spider's web to be, inexplicably needing to place some distance between herself and...and...

God, it was hot in here.

She pulled at the mask that covered her face, gulping in the air in an attempt to alleviate the sickening wave of nausea that rolled in her stomach. Stumbling backward as she did so, heedless of any obstacles that might be in her path.

Needing to get away.

To escape.

The room blurred suddenly, forcing her to slam her eyes closed as the world around her began to tilt at an impossible angle. Like a climber balanced precariously on the edge of a sheer cliff, she fought to retain her balance as the floor rolled and churned crazily beneath her.

Children screaming. Darkness. Bone and tissue.

And in the middle of it all a vision of Emily.

Her Emily.

Screaming out for her name even as she was taken in to the darkness.

Mommmeeeeee!

Scully cried out as a hand gripped her upper arm. She could feel the fingers that curled around her tender flesh, digging deep. Bruising her.

"SCULLY, FOR CHRIST'S SAKE!"

Mulder's voice.

High pitched, panicked, far away somehow.

But it was enough.

Scully's eyes snapped open abruptly. The first thing she was conscious of was her partner's white, pinched face and she could clearly see the pulse that jumped rapidly at his temple. By its rhythm, she guessed that he was badly frightened. 

That she was the one who had frightened him.

His grip on her loosened a fraction as his eyes searched her face.

"Scully...talk to me," he implored hoarsely.

And just before the world began to spin again, she breathed out a single word that seemed to hang between them like an early morning mist, her voice so soft that Mulder was unsure as to whether she'd even spoken at all.

"Dreamcatcher..."

The word barely registered though, instantly forgotten as, right before his horrified eyes, his partner pitched forward into unconsciousness.

“Who else is there?”  Dad asked skeptically.  I covered the receiver and glanced at the only other person in the apartment with me desperately.  He stopped moving.  

“No one, dad.”  I responded, trying to sound casual.

He sighed and chose to ignore it.

“I’m not paying for an apartment for you to mess around.”  He reminded sternly.  The man with me had since relocated to the kitchen but threw me a grin.  “How was class today?”

“It was incredible, dad.”  And it had been.  We had dissected pigs in lab today and I had been anxious going into it.  Something about my family, we tend to only face blood when we’re hurt or when we’ve hurt the thing bleeding.  “The professor really likes me and he suggested I try and apply for a summer study with him.”

“That’s great to hear.”  He sounded relieved.  I knew that he had been anxious leading up to today as well.  “So you think you’re starting to adjust a little better now? …Porsche?  I told you, if you need us to come get you, we can.  It’s not a problem.”


“I…I have to go.”  The man beside me looked at me confused.  

“Porsche…” Dad trailed off.  “You need to talk to someone if you’re not feeling well about this.  Your mother would probably like to hear from you?  Maybe Sam, he’s in a closer field of study.  Maybe he could help—“

“Dad it’s not about my studies.”  I groaned.

“Your grandfather has tried calling you and says you ignore his calls.”  He continued.  “Maybe answer him?  He can help you.”

“Dad, I don’t even know what’s wrong.  I’m sure I’ll be fine.”  I shivered and nodded towards the window.  It was quickly shut.  “It’s just a big adjustment, New York City and college.”

“How is the pack?”

“They’re fine.  Oleksiy is very sweet, helpful.  He’s taken Bran’s words to heart.”

“Everyone does.”  Oleksiy was an old wolf, Ukrainian and probably from the Byzantine era.  He never divulged just how old he was.  The only reason I doubted my assessment was because Bran had implied he was younger than I’d assumed.   “No one is bothering you?  You’re eating?”

“I’ve still felt nauseous.”  I admitted.  “I’ve been eating though.”  Truth be told, whatever was cooking in the kitchen was making me feel like throwing up.  

“You’re too young to behave like this.”  I knew he was worried, it didn’t even need to show in his voice.  Wolves needed to eat, a lot.  We metabolize much faster than the average person.  Mix that with the general idea that we’re predators and not eating could mean someone goes missing somewhere.

Self control is especially tough in a city like New York.

“Tell mom and Bran that I’m fine.”  I sat down on the couch and laid my head back.  “I don’t need a visit.  I’m just trying to make myself at home here.”

“It’s already the end of September.”  Dad said cautiously.  “Maybe you need to transfer?”

“I’m really ok.”  I promised.  “I’ll call you if I need something, ok?”

“I love you.”  My dad said his goodbye.

“I love you, too.”  And I hung up.  I stretched up and again laid my head back, closing my eyes and taking a deep breath.  The only visitor I had made his way over to me slowly, a little too quietly.

“Ready for dinner?”  It was Bohdan’s voice from behind me.

“Mmmm,”  I yawned.  

“Maybe for bed?”  He chuckled.  I opened my eyes to be met with green ones.  “I won’t stay tonight.  I know you have to wake up early for class.”

“Thanks.”  I closed my eyes again and felt lips press against my forehead.  Bo was second in the East Hudson pack based out of Ukrainian Village.  He was a little older than my father in that Slava was in WWII, I think.  He wasn’t old, then, but he wasn’t young either and he was more than aware that what we were doing was a little too dangerous.

It was probably my fault, I’d not stopped it.

“What’s wrong, Vasilisochka?”  He hadn’t moved from the spot behind the couch.  

“I have a headache.”  I sighed,  “And I still feel very nauseated.”

He made a discontent noise.  I knew my answer had been upsetting him over the past few days.  

“Have you talked to a doctor?”

“Everyone is so quick to say I’m not ok.”  I groaned and looked up to watch him walk into the kitchen and grab plates.  Charles had helped find me a nice apartment, I found out that there had been some arguments about where I was going to live before I came here.  Bran and my father had disputed who would pay for my housing, Bran’s argument being that he could just buy me the whole building and then I can make money for the rest of my life off of it.  My father’s argument had been that, while that was very nice of him, I was still his daughter and I really only needed an apartment. 
Charles had played the double agent, hunting for an apartment for both of them.  He stealthily—I really think this was Anna and my mother’s doing—used both of their money to buy the whole building and the rest to furnish my apartment.  In the end, both had met halfway rather begrudgingly but the deed had already been done.

Bohdan just shrugged at my overly-aggressive response and stirred the pot.  The kitchen itself was a cliche, everything was white and it had a window to the fire escape where I’d placed a few potted flowers.  They were dying, but they were there.

His dirty-blonde hair looked much more red in the sunlight that was disappearing behind him when he turned his head to look at something.  

“Who’s Ben?”  My iPad was charging in the kitchen and the message must have reached it before reaching the phone beside me.

Bran had texted and he’d asked if I had spoken to the blonde-haired man back home.  The man that had actively sought to avoid me the majority of my senior year.  

“He’s a wolf from my father’s pack and a friend.”  I shrugged, trying not to come off in any way as being hurt by Bran’s message.  Bo’s eyes searched mine for a moment and I obediently looked away after a few seconds.  

The problem with werewolves was that you were dealing with two separate sets of instincts. Bohdan’s wolf was much less likely to be jealous, we weren’t mates and it was a complicated situation I was trying not to overthink.  Bohdan himself was more likely to be jealous.

I hadn’t seen how these relationships ended, but I knew they were often difficult and they would more often than not end.  My guess was they end badly.  

“Is there a reason you need to reach him?”  

“What’s for dinner?”  I got up, ignoring Bran’s text and pushing past him in the small kitchen.

I almost threw up, I couldn’t even think about eating.  Maybe I would have to call Sam, much to my distaste.  I hadn’t even responded to texts from his daughter and she would be hurt to know I reached out to her dad.

“Porsche,”  I wanted to tell him to just go away, but he had cooked so I couldn’t complain.  “Porsche Vasilisa Hauptman.”  I froze.  “What is wrong?”

“Can we just eat?”  I whispered.  I tried not to jump at the feeling of his hand on my shoulder.  “And you know you don’t get to try that with me.”

“My apologies, I forget.”  I didn’t like when he tried that.  This pack was a little too eager to pull rank and quick to forget it wouldn’t work unless I let it.  It make me feel sticky when the magic ran over me.

I ignored him and sat at the table.  Besides dad, the only other person from home I had spoken to had been my half-sister, Jesse.  I had already known what I was doing was stupid and I obviously hadn’t changed the situation at all, but I needed to hear it from someone else.  She would keep a secret unless she absolutely couldn’t.

“Do you want chamomile?”  Bo reached for a mug.  I hadn’t even heard the teapot go, my senses were getting dull from restlessness.  “To settle your stomach?”

“Yes, please.”  I sighed, taking a seat at the tiny kitchen table.  I took the mug as it was slid to me and blew on it before taking a sip.  “You put sugar in this?”

“You need to keep up your blood sugar somehow.”  He reminded gently, taking the only other seat across from me.  “The full moon is soon, little Vasya.”

This pack often chose to call me by my middle name, which surprised me at first.  Much of the pack was of Ukrainian descent and my middle name was Russian.  Vasilisa Mikulichna was a bogatyr and a woman.  My understanding was that my mother had wanted to give me something of my father’s heritage since he chose Porsche.  Vasilisa came to the court of Prince Vladimir dressed as a man in order to save her husband.  The other option had been to name me after Princess Nastasya of Lithuania.  My mother’s first problem had been the “of Lithuania” but an afterthought was the fact she was killed by her own husband in some sort of accident.

My mother didn’t want to name me with a fate, she isn’t superstitious to my knowledge but someone seemed to have pushed her into that one.

“You didn’t need ‘little,’”  I mumbled, taking another sip.  He looked up at me from his cup and I knew he was smiling from his dimples.  “It’s already a diminutive, you didn’t need to double that.”

“And Vasilisa was a warrior.”  I reminded with a raised eyebrow.

“And your father is fourth in the country, your grandfather is the Marrok, you call his sons by uncle.  You were raised to be a warrior.”  It was then I realized he had slipped a plate in front of me as he had sat down.  “But you don’t eat like one.”

“You speak like you are far older than you are.”  I rolled my eyes.  To appease him and everyone else, I picked up my fork and moved things around.  

He just laughed.
