Just re-read Going Back The Way We've Come again because I was feeling nostalgic and craving some sweet angst and because I still love this fic of mine so very much.

Anyway, I am now mentally and emotionally stuck in a painful daze reflecting on chapter 2 - where Xiao Xingchen's past is relived - especially concerning that personal headcanon of mine that I included there.

Back when writing this chapter, seeing that canon apparently wasn't painful and tragic enough, I thought:

What if XXC and XY had almost met sooner?

What if there had actually been a slim chance that XY would have even not encountered Chang Cian at all... but Baoshan Sanren instead, back when he was seven?

What if Baoshan Sanren actually descended her mountain once a year to look for orphans and then came to Yueyang that specific year?

And what if she had allowed then ten-year-old XXC to come with her and help her look for a potential child to join them?

This would have actually been the perfect grounds for a little canon-divergence AU that's all happy and cute with maybe some minor angst.

But as I am fond of gut-wrenching and soul-splitting pain, I decided, let the possibility be there but then have them miss that chance by a very very very small margin.

And now I've made myself cry because it is just so damn painful to read and think about that missed chance... The two of them almost meeting... Xue Yang being so close to a happy childhood, not having his hand crushed, his finger turned into pulp or almost losing his life, not going on to commit all of the attrocities later on, and then Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan would also not have had to go through any pain and emotional and physical torture either...

There could have been that wholesome happy future for all of them... But it was missed by just a heartbeat because Xue Yang had been detained elsewhere, got back too late and wasn't there when Xiao Xingchen could have chosen him but selected another orphan first...

Oh the sweet sweet pain....

In a similar way, I thought long and hard about their actual first encounter in canon and why it escalated the way it did and, yet again, my angst-driven self was like

What if all of it was in fact ultimately just based on one big unfortunate really minuscule misunderstanding?

What if what each of them thought they heard or what they said was not at all perceived the way it was intended to and what was meant to be said and heard?

What if they had even been trying to say something but were interrupted too soon and didn't get to say what might have been significant to diffuse the tensions and avoid any growing resentment?

So we might have Xiao Xingchen, who is actually quite smitten with young Xue Yang already, despite his rather unruly behaviour, and even muses about the younger’s potential as a cultivator when receiving the proper training, but before he can even begin to say anything along those lines, Xue Yang, who is already or still too heated and angry by Song Lan's attack, interprets XXCs manner all wrongly as self-important and haughty and interrupts him to lay words in his mouth and thus never learns of the man's true thoughts...

Another twisted knife to the heart for another possible diverging path to a better outcome not being taken...

And now you may lie with me, staring at the ceiling, contemplating our existence...

I'd love to see the turtles pulled into the My Hero universe! The pro heroes would just assume they're heteromorphic vigilantes! They'd fit in rather well, if they didn't get arrested! No more hiding in the shadows if they so chose! They could go to school to become pro heroes, or go to normal school and eventually get normal jobs and live among the people, the sky is the limit!

It's fun to imagine them attending UA though! Donnie could excel as a support course or hero course student, Mikey would be bff's with Denki can you imagine the chaos they'd make, Raph and Bakugou would be constantly butting heads until or despite realizing they have so many similarities, and Leo would be competing for top hero course student! I'm trying to decide how he and Iida would feel about each other... Would they resent each other's conflicting leadership choices and become competitive or would they each have the other's back and be best friends? Honestly I could see it going either way. Then I could imagine Aizawa, All Might and the older heroes being respectful and fairly impressed by Master Splinter!

Michael Bay's second Ninja Turtle movie, which I don't think many people watched even though it was much better than the first, had Mikey hanging out above ground during a Halloween parade which was fun and gave the turtles the opportunity to turn human which was a big point of contention between the brothers. But integrating them into the My Hero universe would give them so much more freedom without fundamentally changing who they are.

Aaaaah! I just love the turtles so much! Great ask!

‘Domestic’ (If you can even use that word) Pact stuff is easily one of my guilty pleasures. Like, yeah The Pact is this big scary organization but after Riddler dies it’s just a bunch of lost dumbasses grasping at straws as they realize he didn’t even trust them enough to fully explain their plan or goal. Maybe it started with some level of decorum but by the time Bruce comes around it’s commonplace for random goons to burst into the Ha-Hacienda because John knows everyone so maybe he can find where Allen the tech guy left the important flash drives. Bruce eventually invests in a deadbolt for the shack, which a thug promptly breaks seeking refuge as Bane hunts for a sparing buddy. Bane himself has insomnia due to his addiction and often uses his punching bag at night until John opened his window once and told him ‘I had better neighbors in Arkham!’ before slamming it so hard the frame rattled. The only person immune to an overall lack of privacy is Harley because everyone is absolutely terrified of her.

Except for John Doe.

Headcanons

I imagine Mumbo being the tallest and Grian being the shortest.

Scar is slightly above Mumbo's nose with Grian fitting right under Scar's head.

Scar has a very muscular body type with little fat.

Mumbo has a dad bod with little more muscle.

Grian is lean with compacted muscle.

Out of the three of them Grian can lift the most.

Don't be fooled by his puffy sweater and short stature he's really strong.

Scar is a feline hybrid with a coat similar to Jelly. He has the ears, tail, claws, fangs, and whiskers of a cat. Everything else is pretty much human.

Grian is a avian/watcher hybrid. (I like the Evo lore) He has four big old bird wings, bird tail, with bird feet and clawed hands. He has a pair of wings on his head. He has magic but barely uses it. Mostly just when he is really anger or sleep deprived.

Mumbo is a plain old human.

Everyone has traits of everyone else since they're all sharing a soul. (I will touch more on this in a separate post)

Grian got his soul taken by Mumbo but then Scar and Grian became soulmates so a half was taken from Mumbo by Scar.

Since Grian has none of his soul he feels damage the most and his emotions are duller.

Being far away from each other feels really wrong and anxiety inducing for them. So they are together pretty much 24/7.

At first they used to sleep in separate beds but Grian's bird instincts didn't like that so they sleep in a nest together now.

Scar also used to sneak into Mumbo's or Grian's beds. He claimed that he gets cold at his base.

Grian and Scar collectively agree that Mumbo is the best cuddle buddy.

Grian is a big spoon, Scar is a small spoon, and Mumbo is both.

Their favorite cuddle position is Grian spooning Mumbo from behind, Mumbo putting his face in Scar's hair, and Scar cuddling into Mumbo's chest.

Scar likes to make biscuits from Mumbo's chub.

Grian gives Scar head scratches. Scar purrs a lot during this. (He denies it though as he's embarrassed)

Mumbo preens Grian's feathers for him.

When Scar sees Grian being a little gremlin he picks him up from the scruff of his sweater with his mouth or joins.

Grian likes to perch on Scar or Mumbo's shoulders.

If Scar or Mumbo puts their arm out in a bird carrying pose Grian will somehow know. He then will admittedly fly there and land on their arm.

Since their souls are shared they can get a little protective or possessive at times. (Will also get a separate post to touch on this)

Scar affectionately likes to nom a lot on Grian and Mumbo.

Grian likes to affectionately (sometimes) bite Mumbo and Scar.

I want to write more but I'm tired and out of ideas. Also I don't think I need to say this but I will, this is separate from the creators themselves and are just their personas.
