Life Goes On

This song feels like a promise. A promise from your closest friends who are like family to you and understand your worries. You think you're alone in a world that has changed from one day to another. Like being paralyzed, you watch as time passes and find yourself mentally lying on the ground, unable to get up. You wonder when all the pain, the coldness, and loneliness will fade away until your best friends suddenly lie next to you, take your hand and give you strength. The world may have changed, but everything between you and them remains the same. In their presence, you can close your eyes for a moment and tune out everything around you. Unlike others, they don't expect you to adapt to the new circumstances. They dance with you off-beat under the clouded sky, enjoying how the heavy rain drenches your clothes, and wrap you in a warm embrace when you begin to shiver. Without second thoughts they run away with you to a better future where you'll be happy. Your best friends keep you from getting lost in the darkness and help you holding onto hope. They tell you with this song that life goes on and doesn't stand still. "Life goes on" is indeed a promise that the hard days will pass even if you might feel stuck in an endless loop right now. Brighter days will come again, as if nothing ever happened, bringing your happiness back. Until then, remember your friends‘ words and place your trust in them. Everything will be okay.

Things men have said to me as I try to explain shipping and fandom culture, an incomplete list:

"It may very well be a good show, however, considering It's centered around a gay romance, I'm quite certain It's not for me..." Random man on twitter. Context: I was trying to convince him to watch the untamed. He wasn't convinced

"how can women read that?!?"- a Columbian catholic teenage boy on twitter. Context: I was explaining what omegaverse is. He didn't like what he heard

"anything demonic saddens me" -a conservative trump supporter, age 47. Context: MDZS

"I guess this is even more proof that I don't understand how the female mind works. I've seen all the Harry Potter movies, but not once did I ever think, "what if Harry and Draco were gay for each other" " - a man with questionable political views, mid thirties. Context: I sent him a link to the first fanfiction I ever read in an effort to make him less homophobic. It didn't work.

"That is bringing you further away from the Lord" - random street preacher with a large sign roaming around campus, late twenties. Context: I asked him if reading gay slash fanfiction on ao3 was a sin.

"that's definitely the work of Satan" -another street preacher who claimed to be a former meth addict, despite his suspiciously healthy teeth. Late thirties. Context: I was showing him a BTS music video and he wasn't thrilled

"Ever consider reading the Bible instead?" Guy at my college who's really nice but talks about God too much

"Homoerotic subtext will probably skew the data" my psychology teacher in high school

"What grade did you get on your latest quiz again?" My dad after I showed him a Wangxian fanart after he asked me how school was going. School isn't going too well btw

I've been listening to Yoongi's solo music for the last few days and the amount of love I have for his art is something I can't properly articulate. I've been going through a really hard time for the last few months, and listening to his music is something I do often to cope with difficult feelings. I love that his music isn't 'it gets better' it's just 'yeah, this is really shitty. i feel shitty. the world is shitty and i don't know if there's a way out or a way through or if things get better but here's what i feel' and i find that so much more comforting. i find celebrities really unrelatable because at a certain point they become so detached from normality. they're rich and they're succesful and even if life sucks for them it doesn't suck half as much as the average person's. but i find his music incredibly relatable. especially his earlier work and his first mixtape. because the first one was released at a point in time where bts was doing well but they hadn't quite reached their peak yet. and to hear him talk about the same dark thoughts that cloud my mind, the same uncertainties, the same feelings, is so comforting. i don't think i've found any other artist that does it the way he does. the absolute fear that consumes me and keeps me caged in my room. the fear of failure. feeling like you have failed and that's it. no passion, nothing you want in life. that first mixtape is the warmest hug someone could ever give. just an absolute safe haven i find myself in when i'm unwell.

I just saw Boracity Magazine's "I miss BTS' old music" video in YouTube. Truth be told, those of you who keep claiming "I miss old bts" or "they fell off" are just making excuses. Because how can you listen to the same genre of music all the time without being bored? In a world like ours, change is inevitable and necessary. Bangtan celebrated and accepted it heartily. Their artistic expression does not fit into a box; it transcends, and their music evolves with the artist they are. If you noticed, their sound echoed their previous sound, but in a different speed, texture, and/or meaning (bst, 2016 & black swan, 2020), and it's still their sound. You can dislike any of their music, and that's fine, but saying their music isn't like the old ones is a disservice to their craft and passion. You cannot place an artist in a box simply because their music differs from the first time you listen to them. And that is what distinguishes BTS from the others. Their discorpahy has had a varied story to tell over the last decade, from school to experiencing the struggles of youth, to embracing adulthood, to accepting and loving oneself, to questioning oneself, and to reflecting, and empowering during the darkest part of life (pandemic). Through out the years, BTS has created several genres of music, which is what art is all about: telling and changing. Above all, BTS' music adapts, evolves, and transcends over time.

May this serve as a wake-up message to everyone that music evolves and that we should not limit an artist capability of adapting to change. Yes, change is scary, but it is necessary.

And to BTS, you're a flipping phenomenal— an art that will never be undone.
