one of these things is not like the others....the cackling goose (Branta hutchinsii) was once considered a subspecies of Canada goose (Branta canadensis). they have overlapping ranges and nearly identical plumage, but are significantly smaller than most Canada geese, with more compact features and higher-pitched vocalizations.

A Denderpeton watches over her eggs hidden inside a Lepidodendron trunk while a Hylonomous (small reptile) and Weygoldtina (Tailless whip scorpion) gets swept away by the current. As a Canadian I have a soft spot for local paleofauna, especially in the maritimes.

a bit ago I illustrated an article in The Walrus, and here's the full process for anyone interested!

it was about feral peacocks that got dumped in this small town and started breeding. there were two dumping events - the first was a mom and her chick (who went on to inbreed), and the other was three juveniles.

my first two ideas showed how the peacocks disrupted the town (perching in flower pots and blocking traffic), the next showed how one of the peacocks got eaten by a lynx, and the last two were family trees. The Walrus went with the ‘angelic’ tree, with Pearl the peacock surrounded by a string of pearls.

Finished this piece! Referencing another of Filip Mroz's gorgeous Toronto streetscapes (did he take this out the front window of his car???) and indulging in a lot of nostalgia for king street of yore and streetcars of yore and so forth.

Also, that cobalt blue sky! One of my absolute favourite types of light, everything is so richly saturated and yet values are much subtler. Pure magic.
