Today is not your best day. Things started going wrong the second you woke up. You slept through your phone alarms, there was no hot water for your shower, your coffee machine exploded on you which caused you to go change, and the bus was late to pick you up. You don’t own a car since you live so close to work that you can take the bus.
All of this is the reason why you have been chewing on your nails since the moment you got onto the bus, and why your hair is a tangled mess from you pulling on it. Not to mention you didn’t get a lot of sleep last night, so your eyes are a bit red.
You keep your head down when you walk into the bullpen. The B Team is in the air today, so you have a day of catching up on paperwork. If you’re lucky, you don’t have to talk to anyone. Everyone is in the break room getting their daily dose of caffeine so you quickly hide at your desk and pretend to be super busy so they won’t bother you.
When you log into your computer, a calendar notification pops up on the top right of the screen. When you read it, your blood instantly turns to ice. A chill runs down your spine as fear seeps into your skin. Just breathe, Y/N. You’re going to be okay. In… Out… You can’t seem to tear your eyes away from the notification so you wait until it disappears. It’s gone but the fear is still there.
There’s nothing to be scared of. No one dies from having their blood taken. A medical professional is going to be there the entire time. They know what they’re doing. They do it every day to millions of people. You’re being irrational. Then why are your palms sweaty, your heart racing, and your entire body shivering? Even the thought of being anywhere near needles makes your blood run cold. You hate needles. You hate what they look like. You hate the thought of one. You hate one making contact with your skin.
Even as a child, needles scared the shit out of you. You’d watch horror movies that involve them which would scare the shit out of you. People in those movies would always misuse them for nefarious purposes, and your little brain thought that’s what people actually did in real life. Nothing traumatic happened to you involving needles but something doesn’t have to be traumatic for you to fear it.
This is one of those times.
Emily walks in with two coffees in her hand; one for you and one for her. It doesn’t matter if you’ve made one for yourself in the break room because she always has the better kind. She sees you at your desk and hops over with a smile on her face.
“I have a present for you,” she sings. When you don’t turn to face her, her smile is lost. She sets both coffees on her desk and looks at you to see just how much of a mess you are. “What’s wrong? Are you okay?” All you can do is shake your head. “Would you like to go somewhere more private?” You nod. “Come on.”
She takes your hand and notices how clammy it is. You’re nervous about something and she is going to be there for whatever it is. She takes you to an empty office and closes the door to ensure privacy. If this were anyone else, you wouldn’t think about spilling but this is Emily. You have a massive crush on her and she is your biggest supporter in everything you do.
“I have an appointment today after work,” you whisper and look down. “I’m scared.”
“Of what?” she asks kindly.
“I have to get my blood drawn. I’m terrified of needles. I don’t know why I am. All I know is that I even think about them and my whole body freezes. I know it’s childish,” you sigh.
Emily gently grabs your chin and lifts it so you’re looking up at her.
“No fear is childish. If it scares you, then it’s real. It’s okay to be scared of needles. It’s not an uncommon fear.”
“But I don’t have a legitimate reason to be scared of them. I wasn’t traumatized or anything. I’m just scared of them.”
“That doesn’t matter. A fear is a fear and it’s valid because it affects you.”
“I don’t want to go to the doctor’s alone.”
“Who says you have to be alone?” she grins and sits next to you.
“You’d come with me?”
“I’d go with you to the end of the world if you asked me to. I’m going to be right there next to you,” she grabs your hand, “holding your hand.”
“Thank you,” you whisper.
“Anything for you. I mean it,” she smiles back.

After the night at the bar, you had been extremely busy with work. You haven't had the time for your date with Emily, but she'd still always tease you. Even if it was at work, you had found ways to sneak around without being caught. Well, hopefully.
"What's going on in that pretty little head of yours?" Your thoughts immediately left your head as you looked up to see Derek in front of you.
You chuckled, shaking your head. Every thought you had was about Emily, and nobody knew about what you two had done in the bar. "Nothing. I'm just tired."
A smirk was plastered on his face, he knew you better than that. But he wouldn't pry you for answers. Thankfully, he had left you alone and he went back to his desk. However, the girl you admired had sat across from you at her desk.
Her eyes met yours, the sparkle in her eye always made you smile, make you feel like the happiest person in the world. You can tell so much emotion from someone's eyes.
"Y/n, my office please." Your father's voice made your head turn, breaking eye contact with Emily. Your coworkers made an 'ooo' sound, acting like children. Your eyes rolled, but you got up making your way to your fathers office.
You shut the door and sat down across from him. His eyes were looking at his paperwork, and he didn't look up. That always scared you, he was intimidating.
A couple minutes later, he finally looked up at you. "I need you to tell me about what you're doing with Emily." His voice was stern and full of anger. He couldn't possibly know.. could he?
"I'm sorry..?"
He never broke eye contact, which intimidated you more. "Y/n, tell me now."
"Dad, I don't know what you're talking about. She's my coworker, what else do you want me to say?" You did your best to stay calm, not looking guilty.
He scoffed, "I gave you a chance to tell me the truth." You watched him as he grabbed his phone, pulling up a picture of you and Emily. Her hand was around your waist, as you two kissed. You thought you were alone in that hallway, but it appears not. You were in disbelief, you didn't know what to say or do.
"I forbid you to see her."
"What?! That's not fair! You can't do that, I'm an adult and I can see whoever I want whenever I want." You protested, even though you'd lose against your father.
His hands slammed against the desk as he stood up, and you jumped. "Emily is my best friend, and on top of that my coworker! I will not allow for this to continue, and if it does I will place both of you on suspension or you'll be fired." His voice raised, and you wanted to cry. He never spoke this way to you, and you respected him but you couldn't at this moment.
You couldn't stop seeing her, she made you so happy. She was your favorite person, you couldn't. "Dad, I have so much respect for you, but I can't stop seeing her."
He scoffed, "it wasn't a choice, y/n. Stop seeing her. Now." His voice was filled with so much anger, you knew this was a losing game for you.
You stood up, "this isn't fair! Why are you doing this to me? Please don't make me."
"My decision is final."
You clenched your jaw, opening up the door. Your dad was already looking at his paperwork. You slammed the door as you left, making your way out of the bau. You kept your eyes forward, not looking at your wandering coworkers eyes.
You locked yourself into your car, and you started to breakdown. Your father has never acted like this before, he was a little uptight but he wasn't ever like this.
You suddenly jumped as a knock came from your window, you looked up, seeing Emily. Her face was filled with concern, and you unlocked the door. She made her way around the car, and into the passenger side.
Her hands cupped your cheeks, "what's wrong, my love? Why wre you crying?" You couldn't tell her, you didn't want to. You knew she would listen to your father, and take his side. You kept your eyes on the center counsel, as your tears fell down your cheeks.
"Baby, talk to me. I don't like seeing you like this, and I want to make you feel better." Her voice was soft and filled with concern.
You wiped your tears, finally looking up at her. "You can't. My dad said that.." you paused, trying to read her. She was patient, and she didn't push you for an answer.
"He said I can't see you anymore." Emily shifted in her seat, and she moved her hands. You thought this was it, and she was going to agree with him.
The car was silent, she didn't speak or look at you. You were worried, you have had a crush on her for ages. You couldn't lose her as soon as you got her.
Her voice broke your thoughts, "do you want to go on that date tonight?" Her eyes met yours, and you immediately smiled from relief.
Hours later, and Emily was at your front door. She eyed your body, admiring how beautiful you looked. "You look.. astonishing." You smiled, wrapping your arms around her neck, placing a soft kiss on her lips.
Her hands met your waist, rubbing your side. The kiss was slow at first, until Emily ran her tongue along your lip, pushing it into your mouth. As you pulled back for air, she smirked. "Good thing you pulled back, or else that dress would be off of you before we got into the restaurant."
You smiled, and she held her arm out for you. You linked your arms, making your way to her car.
You were at the restaurant, across from your lover. As the date went on, her face lit up. You loved her laugh, her smile, the way her eyes lit up every time you talked about something you loved.
You learned many things about Emily, you learned what her favorite hobby is, her favorite food, favorite alcoholic beverage, snack, what she does in her free time. You loved learning everything about her, you were happy she was opening up to you and still seeing you after everything you've been through.
After your perfect date night, you were in your driveway. You sat silently, looking at Emily. She smiled, leaning in. Her lips were inches apart from yours, she smirked, looking down at your lips.
"You know.. I've wanted to take that dress off of you all night." Her words made you shiver, the tone in her voice was filled with lust and desire.
You smiled, pulling back. "Then take it off." You quickly got out of the car, running into your house. Emily smiled, chasing after you. You went to shut the door in her face, but she beat you to it. Emily picked you up with one hand, as she slammed the door shut.
She pressed you against the door, as your legs wrapped around her. You laughed as her lips met yours, her hands running down your body. Her fingers danced along your skin, and you shivered.
Her hands slipped under your shirt, pulling it off of you. As your kiss broke, she began kissing your neck, sucking on your soft skin.
Her lips kept contact with your neck as she carried you to your bedroom, softly throwing you onto the bed. You held yourself up by your elbows, and Emily pulled her shirt off before climbing on top of you.
You smirked, grabbing the loop of her jeans to pull her up to you. She bit her lip, "impatient, are we?" She unclipped your bra as she watched you, your eyes never leaving hers.
Her eyes stayed on you as she leaned down, slowly swirling her tongue around your nipple. You laid against the bed, wrapping your arms around her waist. She smirked, biting your nipple as you tangled your hands in her hair. Her knee slightly pushed against where you needed her most, making you move your hips to feel her more.
Emily moved onto your other nipple, doing the same as before and she slowly slid her hand down your body, into your pants. You slightly spread your legs, giving her more access. She slowly circled your clothed clit, making you softly moan.
Her lips met your neck once again, and her hand stopped moving. She began unbuttoning your pants as she sucked a mark into your neck. "I wonder what Hotch will think of that." Emily smirked, pulling your pants off.
As she slid off your underwear, she kept her eyes on you. She sat between your legs, her hands gripping your thighs tightly.
As she kissed your inner thighs, you grew impatient. You needed her. "Emily, please.." you begged. Her smirk grew, as she leaned closer to your clit;
"What do you need? Hm?"
"I need you to fuck me. Please."
She smiled, "good girl." Emily ran her tongue along your clit, keeping her eyes on you. You kept your hands tangled in her hair, slightly pulling it. Emily was going at a slow speed, and it was killing you. You needed more of her.
You began moving your hips, but Emily quickly held them down. "Be patient. Or else I'll go slower." You nodded, and she smiled. Going back to circling your clit with her tongue, she went a bit faster than before, but still painfully slow.
As her speed increased, your moans got louder. She sucked and bit your clit, as she slid one of her fingers inside of you, moving it slowly. Her name slipped from your mouth multiple times, the way she made you feel was absolutely astonishing. You pulled Emily's hair tighter as she slid another one of her fingers inside of you, her pace increasing. You felt a knot in your lower stomach, and you felt your orgasm approaching.
Emily kept her speed, but every time she knew you were getting close she would slow down. She was edging you, making sure you hadn't cum yet. She replaced her tongue with her thumb, "if you want to cum, darling.. you better start begging." She whispered in your ear.
You could barely form any words, you were thoughtless. "Please, Emily. I need to cum, please.." You whispered, feeling your orgasm approach every time she sped up her movements. Emily's mouth was attached to your nipple, and she kept her current pace.
You figured she didn't think your begging was good enough, since she kept teasing you. "Please, mommy.." you whispered, feeling slightly embarrassed that she wouldn't like that. But your embarrassment quickly faded once Emily sped her movements up once again. Emily's name fell from your mouth as you came against her fingers. She let you ride out your high before removing her fingers, and putting them into your mouth. You sucked on her fingers, licking them clean.
"Such a good girl you are." Emily removed her fingers from your mouth, and she quickly got up, making her way to your bathroom. A second later she came back with a towel, cleaning your legs up. She threw the towel on the floor, and she laid beside you, pulling your body onto her chest.
Closing your eyes, you listened to her heartbeat. You felt so much comfort laying in her arms, like a teddy bear you'd cuddle as a child. Emily ran her fingers along your back, making you fall asleep quickly.

mrshotch I asked him if he'd still love me if I was a worm, we had a long argument about it, and now we're good ☺️ love you @/ahotchner 💕
ahotchner I still don't know why you'd be a worm, but I'll love you the same sweetheart
bbgirlgarcia GOD I SHIP YOU TWO SO BAD 🥰🥰
doctorreid But that's not even a worm. That's a millipede which are arthropods under class diplopoda. Millipedes have legs which you can see right there. They have an exoskeleton whereas worms don't have them. Fun fact, millipedes are actually some of the oldest creatures to live on land.
emprentiss why did I even read all of this
doctorreid also what worm would you even be @/mrshotch? there are lots of worms which are classified under three main phyla: Platyhelminthes, Nematoda, and Annelida. I think Hotch will love you if you were an earthworm. But if you were a tapeworm or ringworm or any other parasitic worm, I don't think so.

12 Days of Ficmas ❅ Day 6
Tumblr media
Word Count: 3.5K Paring:  Emily Prentiss x Fem!Reader Prompt @12-days-of-ficmas: fighting while setting up the christmas tree/soft emo reconciliation
Summary: (Y/N) took her girlfriend's death very hard. But when Emily reappears seven months after everyone thought they had buried the agent, things between the couple seem to go back to how they were. (Y/N) always understood how important her girlfriend's job was and she never complained. Still, it can be hard to remain understanding when yet another plan is canceled and another promise is broken.
A/N: well, another sad one with a happy ending... I told y'all it'd be a sorta sad Christmas 🫣
<- Previous | Next ->
Tumblr media
There were so many things that (Y/N) was that Emily loved. She was smart, witty, and understanding. Over all things, she was understanding.
After Emily’s supposed death, she had been devastated and had found it hard to get her life back during the seven months she was by herself. Although life went on, (Y/N) was stuck mourning for her partner without any knowledge that the woman would walk through the door alive and better than ever. Everything in her life had fallen down a monotonous spiral of dread, and suddenly she was there.
And (Y/N) understood. Even after she had lost seven months of her life, she understood. Even if she had mourned her girlfriend that entire time, she understood. Even if she had prepared to go the rest of her life without the woman she had given her entire heart to, she understood.
Because that was Emily’s job. It entailed high-risk situations, secret keeping, and even the potential fake-death scenario. Simply unavoidable work problems. And, of course, she just understood.
Two months had passed since the woman’s return, and things had seemed to settle down. They had fallen back into their normal routines, living as though they hadn’t lived completely different lives for over half a year. As though Emily hadn’t been only a continent away when (Y/N) thought she was six feet under. And with the holidays coming up, it was no use bringing up the past.
“Hey, baby,” (Y/N) said through the phone. “What time were you getting home tonight? I got us some matching sweaters and another one for Sergio. Oh, and I made some chicken pot pie, and I had Joe bring up the tree. So we can decorate it tonight. And…”
“(Y/N), honey,” Emily interrupted. “I’m not gonna make it home tonight.”
“No, but… you said you’d be home tonight,” she chuckled softly. “You told me you’d taken the week off until Christmas so we’d have some time together.”
“I know, and I’m really sorry,” the woman said. “We just got this massive case, and it’s out of state. It’s probably gonna take the entire weekend. But I promise I’ll be home by Monday —Monday night at the latest.”
“Of course,” (Y/N) said, swallowing the anger that was bubbling in her throat. “I understand. Just be safe, Em. I love you.”
“I love you, too, honey. Thank you for being so understanding,” Emily responded. “And don’t decorate that tree. I wanna do that with you.”
”Of course. I’ll see you on Monday.”
The second the dial tone sounded, (Y/N) crashed onto the couch, sighing as Sergio climbed onto her. She ran her hands over his fur, allowing the purring to unwrench the coil of anger that was tightening in her chest. It was just another missed promise, another day where work was more important than their little family. And she couldn’t help but wonder just how much longer she could withstand being a family of one.
Once upon a time, all (Y/N) had wanted was to spend the rest of her days with Emily. Then she had died, and (Y/N) thought she’d never find anyone to love like she had loved Emily. Only for the love of her life to rise up from the dead and settle back into her life like she had never been gone. It was as though the distance had not made any difference. Emily’s job came first, and everything else, including her own life, came second. And the woman didn’t know how much more she could take.
There was only so much cleaning (Y/N) could do to pass the time. Only so many garlands she could decorate without touching the tree. Only so many songs she could play to forget just how empty the apartment was. She couldn’t even go to work as she had taken the week off to be with Emily. And there she was, no girlfriend and all the time in the world.
“I don’t know what to do, Jess,” she told her friend that Monday morning when Emily hadn’t come home. “I thought this was the person I was going to marry. But after everything that’s happened… I don’t know what to do. And I’m trying. I’ve been trying for the longest time.”
“Have to talked to Emily about this, (Y/N)?” her friend asked before taking a sip of her coffee. “Since she came back from everything that happened last year, have you actually sat down and talked about how you felt during that time?”
“Well, not exactly,” she shrugged. “It’s just… I know why she couldn’t tell me that she was alive. Telling me would have put me in danger. And I know her job is really important and that she has to be away a lot. But I just wanted to spend some time with her this Christmas. Try to make up for all the time we lost.”
“Honey, if you don’t work through what happened before, how do you expect to be good now?” Jess stopped for a beat, setting her mug down and taking her friend’s hand. “Can I be honest about something, and you won’t get pissed at me?”
“Why do I get the feeling that I won’t like what you’re gonna say?”
“Because there’s a very likely chance that you’re not gonna like it.”
“Just say it,” she gave up. “If it’s something you think I need to hear, then go ahead.”
“I think you’ve been too understanding in this relationship,” the woman said. “I know that Emily’s job is very hard and that it requires a lot of her attention. But I also feel like there are times when you have to come first, (Y/N). And I know you don’t want her to think that you’re making her choose between you and her work, but you need to have your needs met. You need to tell her how you’re feeling regardless of how she’ll react.”
“I don’t know how to do that, Jess. Her job is literally saving people. How can I tell her that I want her to save people less and be with me more?”
“You know she’s not the only one on that team, right?” her friend continued. “The world is not gonna end just because Emily took a couple of days off. There will still be bad guys, and there will still be people to catch them. I mean, she disappeared for seven months, and the team kept working.”
“But she loves that job.”
“She should love you more, (Y/N),” Jess insisted, squeezing her friend’s hand comfortingly. “If not… honey, I’m sorry, but that’s not the person you should start a family with.”
“This is crazy!” (Y/N) sighed loudly. “This is not the way I should be thinking during the holidays. I love her so much, Jess. I can’t lose her again.”
“Then talk to her,” her friend pressed. “That’s the only way things can get better.”
As morning turned to night, Jess’ words kept swirling inside (Y/N)’s head. The last thing she wanted to think of was breaking up with Emily days before Christmas and only a few days before they hosted a holiday dinner in their place. She was terrified that saying what she felt would break them apart, and she’d actually lose her girlfriend forever. She wanted to spend the rest of her life by Emily’s side, but she understood she couldn’t do it at her own expense.
The hours passed, and (Y/N)’s disillusionment turned into anger. The bare tree mocked her presence as it reminded her of the reason it was still unadorned. Its branches shuddered under the A/C, needles of pine sprinkling onto the floor as the tree reminded her how much time had passed since it had been resting in their living room. She wanted to tear it down, to tear everything she had decorated down. She wanted Emily to see how angry she was the second she walked through the door.
Instead, she turned off all the lights and went to bed, with the tree still naked and no Emily.
The next morning, she awoke to the loud pang of a pan, and her heart sank. She remembered locking the door and checking it three times before going to the bedroom. Whoever it was outside had definitely broken in.
(Y/N) took Sergio into her arms, using a hand to dial 911 as soon as she confirmed there was someone in the apartment and it hadn’t just been a pan she had left too close to the edge. Slowly, she peeked her head out of the door, making sure there was no one on the second floor before quietly making it down the top couple of stairs. She knelt on the ground and looked to the kitchen to find something she had not expected.
Emily was trying her best to make breakfast quietly. A task she was failing immensely. She had her back turned to (Y/N), and that gave the woman the advantage to walk down the stairs without being noticed.
“So, you’re home,” she said, clearing her throat, making Emily jump and drop the pan on the stove. “A whole day late.”
“I know, sweetheart,” Emily started as she turned to face her girlfriend. “We got stuck in Washington and couldn’t get the plane out until very early in the morning.”
“And did your phone stop working, too? ‘Cause I didn’t even get a simple text.”
“Honey, I’m sorry. I was exhausted, and I forgot to call you last night. We spent so many late nights on this case, and it finally caught up to me. Can you forgive me?”
With a sigh, (Y/N) found herself falling into the same pattern. “It’s fine,” she said as she let Sergio down. “Let’s just eat breakfast so we can finally decorate the tree. We have the party on Friday, and there’s so much to do.”
The couple ate in silence, pushing their food around on their plates rather than enjoying the meal. The air around them was tense, filled with unspoken words and frustrations. But, as always, it was easier to move past it rather than talk about it because (Y/N) always understood.
Still drenched in silence, (Y/N) dragged the boxes of ornaments from the corner of the living room to the tree. She pulled the lids off the containers and started decorating without saying anything else. And Emily followed suit, working around her to help but keeping out of her way.
“Why don’t I put on some music?”
“Sure,” (Y/N) shrugged. “Whatever you want.”
“O~kay,” she said, connecting her phone to the speakers. “Actually, I just remembered there’s something I got for us.” Emily pulled a box from her purse, handing it to (Y/N) with a bright smile on her face. “I got it before leaving Washington, and I thought you’d like it.”
From the box, (Y/N) pulled a snow globe ornament with a lit-up Christmas tree inside, the tiny specs of white making the entire scene look like a winter wonderland. And where she would normally love a present like that, that specific morning, it felt like a slap to the face.
“Thanks,” the woman said. “It’s pretty.”
“It’s the first ornament of our new place, baby,” Emily cooed. “It even has the year engraved under it.”
“Yeah, I see. It’s… yeah, it’s great.”
“Is everything okay, (Y/N)? I feel like you’re somewhere else today.”
“I’m fine,” she shrugged. “Just fine.”
Emily wouldn’t have had the kind of job she did if she didn’t know how to read people’s emotions. She could tell (Y/N) was holding something in. Her shoulders were tight, and her expression was stoic. But it was her eyes that she could see held the most pain. They didn’t have their usual glimmer, and she knew it was her fault. “Tell me what’s wrong, baby,” she pleaded, tentatively closing the distance between them. “I know there’s something wrong.”
“I don’t wanna fight today, Emily,” (Y/N) sighed as she took a step back. “I just wanna finish what we have to do and move on from this.”
“Who said anything about fighting? I just want us to talk, (Y/N). You’re angry and upset, and I want to resolve things.”
(Y/N) slammed the ornament onto the couch, placing her hands on her hips and turning around as she took steadying breaths. She knew if she kept looking into Emily’s eyes, she’d simply break down before she could get a single word out. “You wanna know what’s going on? Fine. I’m mad, Emily,” she started. “I asked you –begged– for one week of your life, and you decided to take another case. You were gone for seven months, and all I wanted was one week.”
“Is that what this is about? I thought we were over that.”
“Over it? We haven’t even talked about it, Emily!” she exclaimed. “You were dead for seven fucking months! I grieved for you. I had to get used to being without you. I had to plan the rest of my life without you. And then you walked back in like nothing had happened. But something did! You died. I buried you. I lived without you. While you were in Europe, people here had to get accustomed to you not being here. And after all that pain and suffering, you came back. “I wanted to be fine with it, Em. I really did,” she sighed, feeling tears fall from her eyes. “But you just picked up where we left off, and I had to change an entire mindset that had been ingrained into my mind. For you, it was business as usual. You went to work, you took your cases, you were good. Meanwhile, I had to get used to waking up next to you and not thinking I was hallucinating or dreaming. I had to go back to worrying if your next case was the one that would take you from me. I had to be fine with you putting your job first and hope that one day you had any time left for me.”
“(Y/N)...”
“No, Em, you have to listen to me first. I need to get all of this out of my chest before I explode,” (Y/N) cried. “From the moment I entered this relationship, I understood what I was getting into. Your job… it’s one of the most important ones out there. So, I bit my tongue, and I said I was fine with canceled plans and broken promises because it was all for the greater good. But when you died, it put everything in perspective. I couldn’t stop thinking of all the moments we had missed because of your work and all the moments we were never gonna have. And I don’t know if I can go back to that. Because I love you, Emily. I love you like I haven’t loved anyone before, and I want to build a family with you. But if the work-life balance is not something you can do, I don’t know how we could build anything together.”
(Y/N) crumpled to the ground as she felt the weight of her emotions take over her. Her shoulders slumped forward, and her chest heaved, and the tears streamed from her eyes faster than she could stop them. As Emily remained quiet, she thought that was it. That was the moment that would break them. Three months before, she was still wondering how she would spend the holidays without Emily. And now, it seemed her fear had come true, even if her girlfriend was standing right before her.
But, suddenly, (Y/N) was enveloped in arms and warmth. “I’m so sorry, (Y/N),” Emily whispered against her hair. “I never… why didn’t you tell me? I never wanted you to feel like my work was more important than you–than us. I can’t even begin to imagine what you went through when I was in hiding, and I’m sorry that you had to go through all of that without me. But I want you to know that if I had been able to take you with me, I would have. Because at the end of the day, once the job is gone and all those responsibilities are put to rest, you are the only thing that I want in my life to be there still. I want the family. I want the future. I want everything with you. (Y/N).”
“It doesn’t feel that way most of the time, Em,” (Y/N) breathed as she leaned into Emily’s touch. As much as she had put space between them, she couldn’t help herself from sinking into her. “We moved in here only two months ago, and I think you’ve slept here a handful of times. All I asked was for you to take this one week so we could find our center again, and you took a case that you didn’t need to. It was a choice you made, Emily. Your days had been approved already, and you still took an out-of-state case. So, I think you can see how I would feel like you care about the BAU more than your own girlfriend.”
Emily’s arms wrapped tighter around (Y/N), her own tears falling and staining the fabric of her girlfriend’s shirt. “God, I know. I’m so sorry, baby,” she sobbed. “I just… I guess I’ve been trying to make things feel like they did before, and it seems my way was to throw myself into work. I never wanted to make you feel like I didn’t value you because you’re the only thing in my life that I want to hold onto until the day I die. I’m sorry, baby. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sor…”
(Y/N) swallowed her words as she turned and crashed her lip onto Emily’s. She kissed her until her worries melted away. She kissed her with all the love and passion they had been lacking for months. She kissed her until they both understood their love for each other was the one thing that remained intact.
It wasn’t until Sergio jumped onto their laps that they finally released each other, chuckling as the cat meowed for attention. (Y/N) traced Emily’s lips with a smile, finally allowing herself to stare into the woman’s eyes. She caressed the skin of her cheeks, smoothing every worry line that had painted her face. She kissed her forehead, then her cheeks, her nose, her jaw, and finally her lips. Because she was there. And she was alive.
“I promise things will be different,” Emily whispered as she rested her forehead against her girlfriend’s. “I’ll take another week off. Hell, I’ll take a whole month off if you want. But I want you to know just how much I love and care about you, (Y/N). And I’ll do anything to prove it.”
“Wait here,” (Y/N) said as she got up from the floor and ran to her bag by the door. She rummaged for the red velvet box that had been inside for an entire week before March 7th, and she had kept it as a reminder of the woman she loved and would never get to wear it. But she was there now, and there was no better promise than what was inside. She ran back to where Emily sat with Sergio, taking her spot once more. “Do you mean it? Do you really mean anything?”
“Of course, baby. I love you.”
“Then, marry me,” (Y/N) said as she opened the box to reveal the ring she had carried for seven months on a chain and had put it back in the box when Emily came back. “I love you, Em. And I want everything with you. I want a house and a family. And I wanna grow old and wrinkly with you by my side. So, Emily Prentiss, will you marry me?”
“Yes! God, a thousand times yes,” she exclaimed as she crashed her lips onto hers one more. “And, well, I guess there’s no point in waiting until Christmas,” Emily chuckled as she stuck her hand under the couch cushion to pull out a similar blue velvet box. “(Y/N) (Y/L/N), will you marry me? Because I don’t want to ever know life without you. Not now, not ever.”
“How could you steal my idea?” (Y/N) chuckled. “I’ve been wanting to ask you this since the start of the year.”
“Would you believe me if I told you I bought this ring after our third date?” the woman smiled. “And I’ve been carrying it around for almost two years now. I wish I would have given it to you so long ago. But no better time than now. Will you marry me?”
“Can’t believe you have to ask. Of course, I will.”
With matching smiles on their faces, they each slipped a ring onto the other’s finger and took the other in their arms. There, in front of their half-decorated tree and their cat, Sergio, they professed their love for one another and cemented their most important promise yet. They were in love, and that, (Y/N) understood.

California
A one bed one bed. Smut ahead, be warned. Garvez, Ao3 WC: 5,267 Penelope is directed to join the team on a case in California, but due to some seemingly serendipitous events she and Luke end up sharing a room and a bed. Everything goes fine until Penelope wakes up and can't get back to sleep, maybe some reading will help lull her back down. ---------------
Three FBI profilers and one technical annalist supreme huddled around a cellphone in the lobby of a Pasadena, California hotel like beach goers around a bonfire. Unfortunately, this was not a vacation.
“Garcia, Alvez, you’re sure you’re ok bunking together?”
“Oh, I’m fine, so long as Penelope keeps her hands to herself-“
“Excuse-” she defended, turning to wap him with the back of her free hand.
“Ow! See?!” Luke flinched and teasingly begged, looking for a grain of sympathy. None was found, though sly smiles were traded.
Penelope glared turning back to Prentiss on the phone, “Of minimal issue, Oh Fearless One.”
Prentiss remained back at Quantico, Rossi had also been held back, his insight and connection to Voit deemed too vital to allow him to stray further than an hour’s drive. Penelope’s presence, however, had been specially requested by Pasadena P.D.
Due to her insider, if outdated, knowledge of CalTech’s campus and community, and given what Prentiss viewed as temptation in the form of a key witness, she was directed to go along. It wasn’t until accommodations came up that the practicality of sending three female agents and one male agent out in the field dawned on her.
Feeling left out at being held back, Rossi had upgraded the team to a ritzy hotel. He argued that he wanted to make sure the team (really, his concern was Penelope) was comfortable, not in some trash heap motel the Bureau would spring for. He reasoned that since she wasn’t often in the field and since he wasn’t there this time, he wanted to do what he could to make her feel secure…He certainly hadn’t in his wildest actions schemed, hadn’t used his skills as a profiler, hadn’t even thought they would…and those thoughts hadn’t been spurred by the intermittent gossip his late wife shared in idle moments at home. David Rossi absolutely had not looked for the nicest place with the fewest amount of vacancies…
And even if he had, it would have been a 33.333% chance they’d end up in a room together…
He had zero way of knowing Luke wouldn’t feel right sharing a room with JJ because she was married (even if he was very familiar with Luke’s Catholic upbringing), nor that Tara, forced to share a room with Gabriel growing up, had an aversion to bunking with men (only exacerbated by her experience with her ex husband and ex-fiancee), and he only knew Penelope to have shared that one time with Morgan…
However, it was indeed the discomfort of Tara and Luke, and the flexibility of JJ and Penelope that quickly brought the group to the decision of Luke with Penelope and Tara with JJ.
A sound of defeated aggravation broke between the four and the phone, “Now I feel bad! Penelope, I can do it, we all know how tidy Luke is and with any luck it should only be a few nights. Sharing a room with him can’t possibly be as bad as sharing with Gabriel.”
“Aww, gee, thanks, love you too.“ he mocked, playfully scowling.
JJ and Penelope smirked
“Tara, it’s fine, really. You guys, we’re fine. I have brothers, and I’m not bothered one bit by sleeping in the same room as male friends and coworkers. Luke and I can share a room.
“Hey, no really-” Tara tried again.
“I know the last time was with Derek…” JJ started.
“And that’s why it’ll be fine!” Penelope insisted, loudly cutting everyone off, “Guys, it’ll be just like that! …Well, hopefully not just like that, I could really do without the dead man part-”
No one knew. No one needed to know. One dinner three years ago, countless charged interactions, and a hand full of flutter-filled dances buried in the past. They were on stable ground now. They could do this as friends.
“Alright, if you’re absolutely sure. Everyone get some sleep, you’ve all got your work cut out for you in the morning.”
With sleeping arrangements sorted and key cards divided up the group loaded into the elevator with their bags, Luke carrying double, ignoring the weak protests of the blonde toddling along behind him.
As the elevator climbed in levels, Luke and Penelope now bickering over the baggage situation, JJ and Tara held a conversation of their own through traded looks; raised eyebrows, widening, narrowing, and rolling eyes, and little nods saying what they wouldn’t out loud, each wondering if this serendipitous arrangement would make their trip that much more interesting in the morning.
“Have a good niiiiight” JJ sang as she and Tara exited a floor ahead of the other two.
“Sleep tight” Tara bid, fluttering her fingers in a wave.
Luke ducked his head chuckling, Penelope scoffed in slight offense narrowing her eyes at the parting duo.
Rude.
As far as they were concerned she and Luke were colleagues, nothing more. Nothing to be making cute little voices about.
Settling in to their room, things had gone without incident, their interactions polite. Cordial. They set their things down, she took a bath, he made her tea, he took a shower, and then they went to bed.
There were no lingering looks, no awkward exchanges, and no tension to constrict
despite
the one little issue no one had realized they faced
Freshly showered, Luke folded back the covers, pausing to play with his alarm (he never needed it, but he didn’t like to leave things to chance in an unfamiliar environment) before getting in the singular bed.
One bed.
One very nice, very large, very inviting looking bed. One bed for the two of them. How anyone who worked at the hotel had managed not to mention that detail was beyond him. He wondered if Penelope was regretting her choice in being so easygoing now. He wondered if he should offer to sleep on the couch...but she hadn't mentioned it and he'd decided in an effort to mirror her unbothered attitude, he wouldn't either.
Fake it until you make it, right?
Coming out of the bathroom in little shorts and a matching camisole she was completely adorable and sexy, and as she assured him she had no problem with him sleeping in his briefs instead of full length pajama pants because she figured he was a hot sleeper, which was a perfectly considerate and not at all lascivious thing to say, he felt guilty for thinking the second part.
She was correct, too, at home he slept in little else, but on cases he always slept in an FBI training shirt and basketball shorts. If there was some middle of the night emergency, he did not want to have to evacuate half dressed. But somehow the basketball shorts he kept in his go bag had gone missing…He was usually meticulously prepared, so he was grateful when she showed mercy as he tore the bag apart in confusion and frustration looking for them, only to turn up with long flannel pants he kept for cold nights at home instead.
Alvez, looking at her lost and apologetic, in that just tight enough dark blue shirt…
Friends. In a bed.
(and very little else)
Right.
She could do that.
With his arm between them tucked on his chest and his other tucked behind his head, Luke focused on his breathing, drifting off almost instantly.
For Penelope, initially it had been just as easy. The hot tea Luke had kindly brought her for her bath calmed her insides while the warm water on the outside worked it’s magic on her swollen feet. By the time she had finished, she was but a string of spaghetti in a boiling pot, limp, plump, and lax. Serenely, she too fell quickly into slumber, cuddling against the comforter.
But if the lack of awkwardness and ease of rhythm lead her to believe that either truly felt things were neutral, she was deluding herself.
Her subconscious was not so easily lulled into the false narrative told by the waking tech analyst however…
Rousing with a start from a dream she could only embarrassingly describe as too good, she first cursed JJ and Tara for their earlier insinuations, obviously planting the seeds for what had transpired for dream Penelope, then watched the dark profile next to her for a time. He was asleep. He would be asleep. This was business, work, mundane, routine, she was as good as Matt laying in this bed next to him, as good as Roxy, to Luke this meant nothing. To Luke this would never mean anything again. And why should it? Hadn’t she let him know in no uncertain terms where he stood? Rejected him enough? No man would continue to hold feelings that long, no person would lack so much self respect…
And yet, it was lies. She clearly lacked that self respect.
Penelope rolled to her back, closing her eyes and letting out a slow, quiet breath. Sleep had come so easily just an hour ago, but now the sandman was far from this room, far from this bed, half way across the globe, and she lay starkly awake. She found herself flopping and shimmying; right, stomach, left, back, she rolled and twisted, but nothing would settle.
Frustrated, she jerked to her left, facing the edge of the bed. She needed to sleep so she wouldn’t be snappy and mean, anything else she could work through with coffee, but she’d been such a biting jerk coming back she wanted to be better this next case, actually act like she wanted to be there, because she did. Being back had helped her accept this was where she felt most useful, where she felt like what she did mattered, plus nothing really compared to working with friends.
She’d laid with her eyes closed trying to clear her mind and focus on her heart beat, her respiration, feel the weight of her limbs, and the bed supporting her, all the meditative tricks she knew, but nothing worked. Sergio would pop in, or Shane, her brothers, Luke. She needed something else, something to wipe away the unsolicited thoughts. She decided to read until she fell back asleep, a bit of reading always helped when nothing else would. She’d set the screen’s brightness on her tablet low so it wouldn’t keep her up and so it wouldn’t accidentally wake Luke. Luckily she’d been reading on the plane on the way here, so it was already close by in her bag at the side of the bed.
Powering it on, she went straight to the Ao3 bookmark for her favorite guilty pleasure (guilty only because if she thought too hard about it, fanfiction about FBI coworkers with a friendly rivalrous enemies-to-friends-to-lovers type relationship might hit a little too close to home) and was pleased to see a new story had been posted. Pleased until she saw the subject, her brain screaming at her to turn it off and making her head whip back to check he was still sleeping when she saw the rating…
Penelope bit her cheek and frowned, conflicted. Fudge. If she were home, on her own, she wouldn’t think twice. But reading one bed smut while at work? In a real life one-bed scenario? With the situational equivalent laying inches from her?
Don’t do it! Don’t do it! Don’t do it! blared like alarm bells.
But he was asleep, she argued, and this was one of her favorite writers, the story was all but guaranteed to be good… not quite a good thing if what she was looking for was sleep, but now she simply wanted the distraction from being awake and restless.
He’d never know.
Getting in to it, she tried for a time, then no longer bothered to fight off her brain’s urge to replace the male avatar with Luke in the visualizations that appeared as she read. Unfortunately, this story was closer to their own than simply being two agents sharing a bed on a work trip. It was all too easy for Penelope to think about him as the female lead reminisced guiltily about dancing with her co-worker, when she bit out pithy teasing retorts, and when he flirted back effortlessly. So wrapped up in the parallels between the story she was reading and her actual life, she failed to notice when Luke was no longer sleeping, soft breathing behind her, weight turning gently towards her.
Every flip and flop, huff and rustle she’d done trying to get comfortable enough to fall back asleep had unknowingly tugged him closer to the edge of waking. He was a light sleeper by trade, never knowing when he’d need to wake up and be ready for action. This time though, it wasn’t battle he found waking him but a sleepless Penelope, dim light of her tablet softly glowing, finger silently scrolling.
From his higher vantage point behind her, Luke peered over her shoulder wondering what it was Penelope Garcia read late at night when she couldn’t sleep. Though he read, he wasn’t a ‘read to sleep’ kind of guy. Maybe it was chatrooms on deepweb, maybe it was tech stuff, possibly even some shopping…
‘I know you want this as much as I do’ ‘How does it feel?’ he asked, pressing himself against her
Luke sneered in disgust. Like assault he answered the protagonist in his head.
Huh. So that’s what she read…
From what he could make out it was some self-published bodice ripper-
was that what they were still called?
What if there wasn’t a bodice to rip? Reid would know what they called them.
Why was he thinking about Reid?
Oh, yeah, because he was trying pointedly not to think about Penelope in this bed a heartbeat away reading what was as best he could tell some porn about two coworkers sharing a hotel room and bed while out on a case, much like…
Neither had offered to take the floor, the expectation that they were both mature enough to handle themselves, were work colleagues, and friends on top of that squashing any thought of things being romantic between them. Why would either compromise their sleep, their health, their ability to function at optimum level tomorrow just because they were sharing a bed? They weren’t a pair of hormone riddled adolescents, they could stand to lay next to each other without anything happening. And they were friends…but he was wishing now he had offered to take the couch, or the gutter for the direction his thoughts were headed…or that he could peel his eyes away from her reading.
Kate’s mouth dropped open and her eyes shut, a silent breath released. Jake’s actions grew bolder, hand slipping from control on her hip, down and forward, splayed fingers brushing low on her abdomen and just north of her clit, coming together to land on the tie of her pants.
Playing with the string, his fingers tangled in the barrier keeping her from him ‘’…the flirtatious banter, how your body responds to mine when we dance, the look in your eyes… I know you see how I look at you…Aren’t you? Just a little bit curious?” he could feel her breathing speed up, becoming labored at his words, the memories, the feel of him on her. Jake moved, his lips nuzzling her ear as he whispered, “I know I am. It’s ok if you’re not, but if so, tell me.”
Luke could see Penelope’s breath picking up like Kate’s, shoulder and chest rising and falling.
He hadn’t realized he’d done it until he felt the warmth under him. He’d been leaning over for a better view of the story, wanting to see what else the two agents got up to, how far Jake might go, if Kate would beat the shit out of him. But now his large hand was resting on her waist, middle and ring fingers tight against unquestionably prohibited skin, skin so smooth, exposed from the restless tossing and turning she’d done pre-book, electric shock zinging up his fingertips and locking his skin to hers.
Just because she was reading something incredibly similar to the situation they were currently in, characters sharing oddly similar experiences to theirs, did not mean he could touch her, was not an invitation. He knew.
And yet… he couldn’t help but wonder: is that what she wanted? Is that what he should have done two years ago? Did she expect him to make a move? To show her how he felt? To shut her down and vehemently deny he didn’t feel that way, but in fact felt there was more, could be more, between them? He’d thought at the time she just wasn’t feeling it anymore, that the draw had worn off. He thought he was clear when he’d asked her out…but now he wasn’t quite so sure.
Her breath stilled at the touch, Luke’s hand moving lower molding to the curve of her hip, hesitantly coming to rest just there.
Partially startled at the contact, but lust-fuzzed brain taking up the majority of thought, Penelope imagined his hand slipping down and back, groping her ass, about Luke, like Jake, fed up with the lies, restraint breaking, turning her roughly, forcing her to admit she thought about him -still thought about him, never had stopped thinking about him, wanting him.
But he was probably just reaching out during his sleep, he was a tactile person, it would make sense he was a sleep snuggler.
Unsure what possessed him, where his self-control had gone, Luke found himself speaking the words from her story; “I know you see how I look at you…It’s ok if you don’t want to, but if you do, please tell me.”
At that her heart stopped-  Sleep-reading was NOT a thing-  then slammed-  Did he just quote the fluffing dialogue?!-  then thundered.
Okay, so he’d changed it, still, it was a plead; please don’t rip my arms from my body, please say yes, please, please, please.
Shuddering a breath, her head tilted back, but what he saw in her face wasn’t fear or timidness, it wasn’t anger or outrage, what he saw was pure desire, pools of black reflecting back the soft gray glow of the tablet she was still clutching loosely, full lower lip dropped and waiting like an especially succulent section of orange for the taking.
“Just kiss me-” had barely been uttered before her lips were on his. The tablet falling to the carpet with a dull thunk in her rush of movement to turn fully towards him, Luke reacting instantly, body moving to cover hers, hand scooping behind her head, fingers threading through silken hair, the meeting of lips, of tongue tips, breath exchanged, gentile but frantic little sips until they turned deep, and long, and hard, her body rocking into his, Luke settling on top of her. Even if he knew better, he wasn’t wasting this opportunity.
The pressure and weight of Luke’s body on hers, his muscles tight against her, his lips plush and firm, directing, instructing, pulling her along, the rough abrasion of stubble across her neck as he nipped and sucked and kissed her jaw, and tugged on her earlobe, his thrust and buck and grind into her pushing her further, spurring her on, building her up, his hands traveling along her sides, gripping, squeezing, leaving her a moaning mess under him. She was teetering on the edge from friction alone, dream and story having peppered her body into a wet and wanting state. Hard, harder, Penelope spreading her legs to hook around and allow for better connection, more fulfilling contact, his groin against her clit, Luke’s tongue at her pulse and his hands slipping, slipping, pulling and tugging lose, hands under her top and she wants it so bad, wants those hands, that body, everything, everything she’d wanted for years, everything she’d wanted but couldn’t, wouldn’t let herself have because… the though of-
that
“Luke- Luke Luke, stop. We should stop.” Penelope breaks away pushing and panting. Luke freezing at the request, arms locked, hovering over her.
“This is… This isn’t… We both know…” her hands tremble against his chest, fighting the urger to swoop down and feel more of him, to move up and pull him back down. Fighting the impulse that would ruin them both.
Between them Luke’s head drops.“God damnit, Penelope,” and it isn’t a yell, though in his chest it feels like a roar, it’s a whisper, soft and heartbroken. “for me it's there, it's alway there, it’s always been there. I’m not your girlfriend and it's not just some unresolved sexual tension. This is real for me, this is a full, all-in, I’d like you to be my last- kind of thing. Something I want to try for night after night, and day after day…Penelope, I have…very strong feelings for you and not just because we happen to be in this bed together…And I feel like you might have them for me… If this is because you’re scared, talk to me, we can work it out together, I want to work it out together. I want to be with you, and not just tonight…”
Penelope blinked up at the man still atop her, the man straddled between her legs, the man who froze in the heat of passion when she told him to. The man she’d been running from. And for what? She couldn’t tell herself it was because of the job when he’d waited until they were no long working together to ask her out, it wasn’t that his motives were unclear, if they had been, they weren’t anymore, and it wasn’t that she couldn’t trust him, when he’d shown her from the start anything she was willing to give was safe in his hands with how he had always cared for every member of their team. Her faith was in him, but still it felt too big, too far, up so high and leaping off the cliff and she was never a leaper, a trouble maker and rule breaker, yes, but she was always hidden away behind firewalls and multiple vpn routs and…safe…But if she wasn’t safe with Luke…then there was no one she would be safe with.
She was breathing hard and she wasn’t sure if it was from the panic attack she was holding off by a thread or if it was from the sudden physical activity, or perhaps both, but she breathed out a strained “Too big-“
Uncomprehending, Luke’s brow furrowed, confused “I’m not- what?” Was she…talking about…
“Too much, let’s just. Hi, I’m Penelope, and I like you.” she’d awkwardly pulled a hand between them positioning it for a handshake.
Luke stared at her like she’d suddenly sprouted three heads before barking out a laugh, “WHAT ARE YOU-“
Penelope cut him off yelling and pushed at his chest as she pulled herself up into a seated position against the headboard, “Shut it! Just go with it!”
Luke’s smile widened but his laughter stopped. Sitting back on his knees, he took her hand shaking it in greeting, “Nice to meet you, Penelope, I’m Luke…I like you too…” then quieter, leaning in, he confided, “Chica, I’m not sure where to go with this”
“I think we should kiss and see where things go from there” she said matter of factly.
But Luke was still more than a little confused, not understanding, “Penelope, I think it’s fairly obvious where things are going to go from there…” It wasn’t supposed to be a joke, but the whole thing felt a little funny so he didn’t bother smoothing out the teasing grin beaming back at her.
Did he ever not need to talk things through?! “Just SHHH! For one- Geez! Must you always-“
But Penelope found her thoughts dissolving as powerful lips swallowed them, an arm drawn tight around her waist lifting her up to him and the other bracing against the headboard, Luke surrounding her. Gradually she relaxed, his bracing arm sinking further down to the bed with their twining bodies, his other easing them each further down the mattress. No longer were movements frantic or rushed, together they moved like molasses, sticky and thick, a slow, sweet, undulation melding together.
His lips on hers, her body with his, legs tangling, feet skating up calves, hips in a slow grind, Penelope exploring all his hard lines and all his soft ones, her hands combing through his thick curls and stroking his neck, his mouth sucking at hers, she could feel herself rapidly reaching a boiling point again, and Luke, she could feel through their scant layers, quickly catching up. His hand tangled in her hair, gently pulling, angling her head, their mouths meeting and pressing deep and leisurely, his other hand at her hip, fingertips trail up and down her thigh, squeezing and groping, his lips moving, parting from hers, traveling south, her jaw, her throat, her collar, her chest, humid and plump and sucking wet and slipping on skin, the anticipation of those same lips on her breasts, those hands on her…that tongue, the hand on her thigh sliding up up up, and the other, down down down, both meeting at her waist, teasing the fabric apart there.
Stopping just sort of what she wants, pulling back a few inches, Luke looks up at her, questioning. This had been the stopping point before, he wants to make sure this time, doesn’t want a repeat, “Can I?” is pushed between them, velvet and gravel, fingers skirting the hem of her top.
Breathless, Penelope gulps out her response, head bobbing in agreement “Yeah. Yes. Absolutely“  as she lifts herself to ease in discarding her camisole and shorts, then helps to peel off his shirt and briefs.
Naked, new, though dark, Penelope takes a moment to admire him, Luke, sweet, caring Luke, his body, this machine, her hand skims his chest, fingers coasting down the valley of muscle to the hard plane of his V’d hips, Luke’s eyes drifting shut, her reverent brush untangling his soul. Her hand lifts, his eyes open, Penelope pulling him back into another sensuous, slow, passionate kind of kiss, sweet and deep, Penelope, who always made him prove himself, was now telling him that he had, and he wishes he’d done it first, wishes he’d shown her such deference, so he tries, hands coming up to her belly, smoothing over her waist, across her ribcage, hands cupping her breasts and thumbs brushing nipples, kiss never breaking, deep and long until the panting and whimpers are too much and she’s writhing under him and gasping for air.
She’s aching and wet, tight, and swollen, and sensitive, more than ready, all she can taste is skin and lips and tongue and all she can smell is Luke and all she can feel is the heat from his body on hers, and then large rough fingers are making quick strokes to her clit, and there’s a small sharp nip to her throat opening up to the blossom of his soft lips, slick warm tongue softening the sting, the same slick warmth blooming as she comes suddenly, a sharp noise to match the nip peeling from her throat, hips jerking towards his and what feels like a smug smile landing in more plush kisses at her collar. His fingers don’t cease and she’s quickly pulled into another body dragging orgasm, his name tugging up from her navel in a tight whine “Luke- ohm ygod. No. Not. umf-fair” stutters around her jerking torso until her hands reach for his and he pulls away chucking, nuzzling into her neck, kissing her cheek.
“It seemed very fair to me for all you put me through…” he teases lightly, planting more skating kisses to her jaw.
“While I admit that was crafty, that is not what I- that is not what we- that is nOT what- ” but despite her fully gown, very experienced self, looking down at the impish and smoldering, very fine Luke Alvez whose fingers she just came on multiple times, she can’t bring herself to say it.
“Crafty?” he questions, “Maybe considerate…” and then that shit-eating grin spreads, and she knows he knows, “What is it you want, Chica? Tell me and I’ll do it” He kisses the corner of her mouth and she wants to push him away and pull him in and never let him go again. The problem with Luke Alvez.
He just wants to hear her say it, for her to beg him. And really she’s not so sure she’s above that anymore, not entirely, but instead of giving in entirely she reaches between them, her hand grasping his rigid cock and strokes it, purring as she does, “I would like this inside me, Newbie. I would like you to use it and make me come again.”
Accenting her request, she hikes a leg high on his hip, but waits, prompting, “Ready,?” At that Luke swoops, kissing her again, forceful, searing, his hips dipping, Penelope guiding him into her. He feels massive, heavy, uncomfortably large against her stimulated walls, Penelope constricted and hot and throbbing around him. They both take a moment to adjust, but once they do neither hold back, Luke thrusting and thrusting, Penelope’s body meeting and responding in kind, fast and harsh, slipping and slamming together, his arms cupped around her back, hands on her shoulders, hers holding and clinging to his back, tense. She can feel the little cuts forming under her nails, digging, needing him close, closer, more, so close, all of her tightening, all of her quickening, his cock hitting over and over the spongy bundle inside her, pain and pleasure, the firm muscle of his pubic bone grinding and kneading her clit, gasping, “Luke-” her head twisting from him, his mouth gliding undeterred over her jaw and down her throat, the taste of her, he couldn’t get enough.  “-I’m gonna, Luke-“  and his hand fumbles from it’s grip, but not to where she thinks, not for what she thinks. Instead of slipping between them she feels his fingers brush up her wrists, feel towards her hands, grabbing them, pulling them away from him, planting on the pillow next to her head, some of her hair, fingers lacing roughly, palms kissing as he pitches further, harder, again and again. Her fingers curl around his, her walls curing around his cock as he continues to fuck into her deeper with each thrust, the shudder of her silken walls pitching Luke over, coming undone, he pulls her into another deep kiss, her thighs convulsing around his waist, her muscles spasming on his cock, Luke thrusting and kissing and kissing and thrusting until he’s gone soft, until neither of them has anything else to give and they break apart, Luke rolling to the side, but not letting go, their hands still clasped, panting and sucking down air, the sweat on their bodies pebbling their skin.
She wants to make a joke, to lighten the mood, but with him it doesn’t feel right, with this it isn’t right, so instead she raises the hand that he’s still holding, the part of her he won’t let go, and kisses it. Rolling to her side she snuggles into him, her head on his chest, and listens to the ebbing of his heart, she kisses his sternum and her other arm hugs around his waist, only then does Luke let go, arm coming to hold her closer, and together they fall back asleep.

Emily decides to surprise her boyfriend, but a misunderstanding might ruin things forever.

Hiiii friends
As requested by a lot of people following an anon I got asking for Hotch/Reader to get into an argument because she thinks he's cheating on her, I made it Hotchniss!
This screams Young Hotchniss to me, and it has been a long time since I wrote them, so here we are! I hope you enjoy this!

Words: 3.1k
Warnings: References to cheating (no one actually cheats on anyone I promise!)
Read over on Ao3, or below the cut
She told herself it was just sex.
She’d told him that too, her hand already in his pants, wrapped around him, whilst his was pushing her underwear out of the way as they kissed. Her words lost against his cheek as he pressed her between himself and his desk. Weeks of long looks and flirting as she distracted him whilst he was meant to be working culminating in the best orgasm Emily thinks she’d ever had up until that point.
It, of course, quickly became more than that.
He’d lay in bed with her, staying in her room much later than he should have if he didn’t want to get caught by one of his colleagues or her mother, and they’d talk for hours. Fingers trailing over skin as they exchanged stories, their childhoods vastly different but similar in many heartbreaking ways. Loneliness and a lack of the love they both deserved leading them to this - seeking out companionship in places they probably shouldn’t have.
They spent the weeks of that summer pretending it would last forever, that their deadline wasn’t fast approaching. On the last night before she was due to go to Yale, he’d snuck into her room as usual, although Emily had since learnt her mother already knew about them by then, and he said he didn’t want them to come to an end. That he wanted more with her and, if she wanted it too, they could make it work.
She still remembered the nervous look on his face, a vulnerability she knew he only ever showed her sparkling in his eyes. She didn’t have to think twice about it, her answer would only ever be yes.
They’d been together for 10 months now, the anniversary of that first night in his old office at her mother’s house fast approaching. It was the best relationship she’d ever been in and she missed him when she was away at college.
They took turns to visit each other once a month. It had only been two weeks since she’d last seen him but with finals coming up and a particularly nasty phone call she’d had with her mother a couple of days ago she felt on edge. She wanted nothing more than to see him, to find solace in his embrace and to breathe him in.
She got in her car without really thinking about it, a haphazardly packed bag on the passenger seat as she drove to see him, the 8 hours passing by in a blur. It’s only when she parks up outside of his building that she realises she probably should have at least called him and let him know she was coming. She blows out a breath and walks the familiar short distance from the building’s entrance to his apartment.
She knocks on the door and waits for it to be answered. She bites her lower lip in an attempt to contain her smile, her excitement, at seeing Aaron for the first time in weeks. She was spoiled by how they started, how he’d been available to her all the time, and she missed him when they were apart. The nightly phone calls and monthly visits were not anywhere near enough, which is what had led her to decide to surprise him like this.
Her smile drops off her face as the door swings open and she comes face to face with a woman who looks a couple of years younger than her. She’s wearing a  t-shirt that is clearly too large for her, and a tiny pair of shorts that were sticking out just below its hem. Her hair is mostly dry, but there are damp patches on the t-shirt she’s wearing where her hair lays over her shoulders, a clear sign she’d been in the shower recently.  The woman looks her up and down, and she raises her eyebrow.
“Hi.”
Emily continues to stare at her for a moment before she clears her throat, “Hi,” she replies, “Is Aaron here?”
The woman nods and looks over her shoulder, “Aaron. Someone is here for you.”
Emily swallows thickly as the woman walks back into the apartment, leaving her alone, frozen in place on the other side of the door, panic and confusion climbing up her throat. It turns into sorrow, bitter and heavy as nausea rolls through her when Aaron comes into view. He’s drying his hair, a towel in his hand as he rubs it back and forth over his head. He smiles at her, and it makes her heart drop into her stomach, her mouth falling open as he has the nerve to smile at her like she hasn’t just come to see him and found another woman in his apartment.
“Em, sweetheart, what are you doing here?”
She chuckles bitterly and shakes her head, crossing her arms over her chest to hold herself together. She refused to cry in front of him, didn’t want to let him know that he’d broken her heart, leaving it in pieces on the floor in the hallway of his apartment building.
“Wasting my time apparently,” she replies, stepping back when he leans in to kiss her, the smell of his shampoo washing over her, “I should go,” she says, shaking her head, “Leave you with your friend.”
Aaron frowns, his delight at seeing her so unexpectedly fading rapidly, replaced by confusion because of how she was acting. Standoffish in a way she hadn’t been with him since he first started working for her mother all those months ago. Before she trusted him.
“Em- He says as he takes a step towards her again but she backs up even further, almost hitting the wall behind her, putting as much space between them as she can.
“You could have just broken up with me, you know,” she says, cutting him off, her voice strained as she desperately tries to hold back her emotions, determined to keep it together, “I’m a big girl, I can take it.”
“Break up with you?” He asks, furrowing his brow, and she feels fury roll through her. Aaron wasn’t stupid, and she didn’t understand why he couldn’t see what the issue was. “Why would I…” He trails off as it clicks, the final puzzle pieces falling into place. It makes him draw in a breath and he laughs without meaning to. The idea is so absurd to him that he can’t hold it back, “Em, no you’ve got it wrong-”
It doesn’t go down well. His reaction makes the spark of anger in her blood catch fire and she shakes her head at him, once again cutting him off before he can explain.
“Go fuck yourself, Aaron,” she says, shaking her head as she walks away, ignoring him as he shouts after her, “Or better yet, let your new girlfriend do it for you.”
She makes it to her car before she starts to cry, the slamming of the door followed a sob she can no longer hold back.
___
She’s just about to order room service, her mind set on getting every dessert the hotel served and eating her feelings in bed when there’s a knock on her room’s door. She sighs and places the menu in her hand down on the vanity before she walks over. She groans as she looks through the peephole and sees Aaron standing on the other side of the door, his hands in the pockets of the sweatpants she’d seen him wearing earlier. She gives herself a moment to gather herself, her forehead briefly pressing into the cold wood of the door, and then she stands up straight and pulls the door open.
“How did you find me?” She asks, her voice sterner than she thought it would be considering she’d spent most of the last hour or so crying.
“I work for the FBI, Emily,” he says, trying to joke and sighing when he sees it doesn’t land, “I knew the last person you’d want to see after me would be your mother, so I figured you’d stay in a hotel. I called around until I found one that told me they had a guest with your name.”
She frowns, her hand still gripping the door handle as she stands in place, not giving him room to walk past her.
“I don’t want to talk to you-”
“I’m not sleeping with her,” he says, cutting her off before she has the chance to yell at him again. She freezes, her jaw tense and tight as they stare at each other, “She’s not…I would never do that to you.”
She feels some of the fight drain out of her, her grip on the door handle loosening as she tries to think of another explanation for what she saw.
“What? You just happened to have a beautiful woman in your apartment? Who you just clearly had a shower with?”
He sighs, frustration building in his chest as he clenches his jaw to stop himself from showing it, well aware that arguing with her right now wouldn’t fix anything.
“She’s called Ashley, and she’s Sean’s girlfriend,” he explains carefully, watching how her confusion only gets clearer, “And by the way I didn’t shower with her. She used all of my hot water by having the world's longest shower and then I had to use freezing cold water when she was done.”
“Sean’s girlfriend?” She asks, still slightly dubious as she ignores everything else he’s said, “Your brother who you haven’t seen in years?”
Aaron nods, “He just showed up this morning, with Ashley in tow,” he says, shaking his head at the thought of it, at how his brother just expected him to drop everything just for him, “He asked to stay for a few days. Apparently, he has a job at a diner in the city and they need somewhere to stay while he has a place of his own.” He continues to look at her, his eyes fixed on her face. He watches as it dawns on her, her eyes going wide. “Any chance I can come in now?” He asks, looking around the hotel hallway, “I’d rather other people didn’t hear any more of my business.”
She nods and she finally steps backwards, letting him step past her. She closes the door and turns to look at him, her arms crossed over her chest. She walks back through it, looking at what had happened at his apartment from a new perspective. Ashley’s hair was almost dry and Aaron’s was still dripping water when he walked towards the door, he’d been excited to see Emily. Joy and surprise in his eyes when he found her standing there even though it was still another couple of weeks until they should have seen each other. He’d been calm, content. Not at all like someone who had just been caught out cheating on his long-distance girlfriend.
She feels embarrassment colour her cheeks, her skin burning with guilt and internalised anger that she had reacted in the way she had, accusing him of things she knows he would never do without thinking critically for even a moment. She’d always prided herself on not being emotional, of being able to control herself in that way, but he brought it out of her. Made her feel everything that much more sharply than anyone else had ever been able to. She loved him, the happiness and light that came with that the brightest she had ever known, but she knew it also gave him the power to hurt her, something that she knows he would never purposely do.
“I’m so sorry, Aaron,” she says, her voice shaking as their eyes meet, his hands in his pockets still as they stand just a few feet apart from each other. Now her anger has cleared, she feels like she’s looking at him properly for the first time since Ashley had opened his front door. He looks sad, hurt shining in his eyes as he looks back at her, and she hates herself for doing this to him, “I…I’m sorry.”
He smiles at her and nods, “It’s ok.”
“No,” she says, taking a step towards him, so close now that she can feel his breath across her cheek, but she doesn’t touch him, “It’s not ok. I…should have listened to you, or thought about what I was looking at but I made an assumption and I wish I could take it back,” she finally reaches out for him, her hand cupping his cheek. She feels him lean into it, his stubbly cheek scratching against her palm in a way that warms her from the inside out, “I am sorry.”
“I know you are sweetheart,” he replies, turning his head to kiss her hand, “And it’s ok. I forgive you, god knows how I would have reacted if I showed up to yours to find a guy opening your front door. But I hope you know I wouldn’t do that to you,” he says, taking her hand in his and linking their fingers together, “I love you. I would never cheat on you.”
She smiles and nods, closing the final gap between them as she leans forward and wraps her arms around him. The final bit of tension leaves her as he wraps his arms around her too, a touch of desperation in his embrace that didn’t usually exist.
“I love you too,” she says, pressing her face into his neck and breathing him in, “And I’m going to apologise at least 5 more times before I go back to college.”
He pulls back to look at her, stamping a kiss against her lips, “I never did get the chance to ask what you were doing here.”
She groans and rests her forehead against his. He tugs her towards the bed and they both sit down. Emily leans against him, her legs over his lap and her cheek pressing into his shoulder.
“Finals have been stressing me out, and last night after I spoke to you I had a…fucking horrible conversation with my mother that ended with me hanging up on her. And I realised the only person who could make me feel better was you and that a phone call wouldn’t do. So I got in my car first thing this morning. I probably should have called first.”
He kisses her forehead and runs his hand up and down her arm, “Well, we would have avoided a misunderstanding if you had,” he quips, chuckling when she lightly slaps his shoulder, “But you know you’re always welcome, right? I miss you when you’re not here.”
She hums in response and sinks further into his embrace, “I know.”
They lapse into silence for a moment and he continues to run his hand up and down her arm, well aware that she found comfort in it.
“Do you want to talk about what happened with your mom?”
She sighs and lifts her head to look at him, “She asked what my plans were when I finish my masters,” she smiles tightly, “I told her what we spoke about.”
They’d discussed it the last time they saw each other, the end of her year at Yale looming over them. She wanted to move back to DC, something she would never have even considered before Aaron, and get a job, preferably in the FBI once she was old enough to apply. She was planning on moving in with Aaron, an idea he’d suggested when she commented she’d need to find somewhere to live.
Elizabeth had hated the idea. She’d been unhappy with the relationship since the moment she found out about it, and Emily knew she’d hoped it would fizzle out as they were forced to maintain a long-distance relationship for most of the time they’d been together. Emily knew her mother wouldn’t be pleased, but a small part of her had hoped that she’d recognise her daughter was truly happy and accept it because of that.
She was wrong.
“What did she say?” He asks, knowing she sometimes needed pushing to talk about her mother. He’s sure that if he didn’t know Elizabeth, if he hadn’t worked for her and knew what she could be like, that Emily wouldn’t tell him anything about her relationship with her mother, always afraid that people would think she was being dramatic or that she was simply a spoiled rich girl.
Emily laughs bitterly, “That I’m letting my heart lead me, that you’ll eventually hurt me and then I’ll realise I’ve shaped my life around something I’ll lose,” she shakes her head and blows out a breath, “It’s probably why I reacted like I did when I got to yours. Even after all this time, she’s still able to get into my head.”
She sounds so sad, so downtrodden, for a moment that he thinks about calling Elizabeth himself. Crossing the line he’d promised Emily he’d never cross, leaving her relationship to her mother just to her.
“She’s your mom, sweetheart,” he says, kissing her temple, “She knows exactly what buttons to push.”
“Yeah,” Emily sighs, “Because she sewed them on,” she smiles at him, “She said she won’t be able to make it to my graduation. She claimed it’s because she’s going to be in Italy, but I think she just doesn’t see the merit in it.”
He pulls her closer and he knows he can’t fix it for her, that it would mean more to her than she’d ever admit if her mother did go to her graduation.
“I’ll be there,” he assures her, “I’ll be the loudest guy in the crowd.”
She laughs and pulls back to look at him, “Yeah?”
He nods and leans in to kiss her, his lips firm against hers, “Yeah.”
“I was going to order food before you arrived, do you want to eat?”
He nods, squeezing her tighter for a second before he lets go and she gets up to pick up the menu she’d abandoned on the vanity.
“Yes please, Sean and Ashley have eaten all of my food since they arrived.”
She smiles and climbs back into his lap, menu in hand, “You’re staying tonight, right?” She asks, tilting her head as she looks up at him, “We could go back to yours but-”
“We should stay here,” he says, knowing he’s said the right thing when she smiles brightly at him, “We deserve some time alone.”
She nods and kisses his cheek, “I can’t wait until we live together.”
Aaron smiles at her, his future as clear as it had ever been, “Me neither, sweetheart.”

the world does not know how much i NEED a fic about emily & spencer getting the soul stone, especially how it was originally scripted for natasha and clint to fight each other for it.
i need to see them yelling and physically fighting each other while breaking down, understanding the winning of this fight isn't the one who gets to walk away, but the one who doesn't have to life with the grief.

i’ve started writing a little of the idea of what if Emily was captured in 2x14 instead of Spence and I was wondering if anyone on here would be interested?
I want to examine how Emily would deal with the Dilaudid and who she would turn to for support after the fact.

Old love
You and Emily are old lovers.
tw: swearing, cheating, smut, kinda public sex, alcohol
Tumblr media
Here you are, sitting at Rossi's for dinner with your team and your new girlfriend. But for some reason, you couldn't stop thinking about Emily. You wanted her to be jealous, you craved it even. But she just didn't care.
Although she didn't care, she sure couldn't stop staring at the two of you. You felt nervous, you didn't know why but you did. You just kept drinking your wine.
"So how long have the two of you been seeing each other?" You heard someone ask, breaking you from your thoughts.
You cleared your throat, "about a month now?" You saw your girlfriend nod out of the side of your eye, and she clinged onto your arm.
"Yes, and it's been great! Right, y/n?" She asked, rubbing your arm. You smiled, and nodded. You watched Emily as she shifted in her chair, trying her best to not show any emotion. She was good at it, but you knew her too well. You could tell it was getting to her.
Your team seemed to like her, "well welcome to the family!" Garcia said, clapping her hands. Emily rolled her eyes, getting fed up with everyone being in awe over your new girlfriend.
"Excuse me." Emily drank the rest of her wine before she got up and headed towards the kitchen. You wanted to follow her, but it'd be too suspicious. So you waited a couple of minutes, then excused yourself.
As you approached Emily, she had her fingers tangled in her hair as she leaned up against the counter. She sighed, turning around but she froze once she saw you.
"You okay, Em?"
She scoffed, "why do you want to know?" Rolling her eyes, she turned and grabbed another wine glass.
"Because unlike you, I actually care."
"And what's that supposed to mean, y/n?" You could hear the cockiness in her voice as she poured wine into her glass.
"You know what I mean."
Emily laughed, taking a sip of her wine as she turned around. "You think I care about your boring ass girlfriend? All she does is cling onto you and talk like a fucking hyper 8 year old."
You smiled, taking her glass from her hands. "There's the jealous Emily I know."
"I'm not jealous, y/n. You just could do better." Emily replied, taking her glass back.
You rolled your eyes, "Emily, I had better. Until you randomly decided to break up with me."
"It wasn't randomly."
"Then why? Enlighten me."
Emily sighed, drinking the rest of her wine before putting it down. "I broke up with you because I was falling in love and I was scared. It's hard to be in a relationship with another agent. Now that you're seeing someone else, I want to rip my hair out from jealousy. I want it to be me touching you, flirting with you, and telling everyone we're together."
"Well, who says you can't touch me?" You asked, getting closer to Emily. She tugged her lip between her teeth, knowing that drives you insane. You grabbed her shirt, pulling her into your touch.
You wasted no time as you slammed your lips onto hers. Emily ran her fingers along your chest, until she got under your shirt. You leaned into her touch, as she pulled your lip between her teeth. You knew how wrong it was, but it felt so fucking right.
Emily grabbed your waist, switching your positions so you were now against the counter. She roughly kissed your lips, but quickly pulled back, leaving sloppy wet kisses along your jawline leading down to your neck.
You leaned your head back, giving her better access to your neck. You felt her teeth against your neck, softly biting your skin. You untucked her shirt, needing to feel her skin, as you dragged your fingernails up her back.
Emily sucked on your skin before she lifted her head up, "you're so fucking lucky your girlfriend is in the next room, or else I'd have you undressed on this counter."
"No one's stopping you." Emily smirked as she slammed her lips against yours, and her hands were working on unbuttoning your pants. You needed her, but she loved to tease. She pushed your legs apart with her knee, pressing it against where you needed her most.
You let out a soft moan against her lips, making Emily bite your lip to shut you up. "Shut up. Your girlfriend doesn't need to hear your ex fucking you, does she?"
You nodded in response, starting to grind yourself against her knee. Emily had one of her hands on your waist, holding you in place, and the other pressing against your jaw.
"Emily, please.." You began to beg. The pleading in your voice, the desperation, it was music to Emily's ears. Emily smirked as her hands found your waistband. She slowly circled your clit, and she stopped every few seconds to tease you.
You held onto the counter, trying to push yourself against her hand. "Please, Emily. I need you."
"Since you asked so nicely," Emily whispered in your ear, pushing her thumb to your clit. Emily knew how to pleasure you, and how much you needed. She never failed to amaze you.
Emily's lips found your neck, biting and sucking your soft skin as her thumb ran circles against your clit. You bit your lip, holding your moans back.
You weren't prepared as Emily slid two fingers inside of you, moving them at a slow pace as her thumb hit your clit. You missed how good she made you feel, how fast she brought you to your orgasm.
Emily covered your mouth with her free hand, "as much as I love your pretty sounds, you need to be quiet. Not only is your girlfriend in the next room, but so is our team. I don't want them seeing you like this."
You nodded, trying to stay quiet. But as her fingers hit your g-spot, her thumb circling your clit, and her lips against your neck, it was too much. You felt a knot in your stomach, and you desperately needed to cum as the pleasure felt so fucking good.
"Hold it. Don't you dare cum yet." Emily said, biting your neck. You could barely think, or form a sentence. You needed to cum, you knew you couldn't hold it for long.
Her hand stayed over your mouth, your moans were getting louder as she kept slowing her pace down so you wouldn't cum. Every time you were close, she would slow down, making your legs shake in desperation.
"I love seeing you like this. You're a mess, you fall apart easily. How fast you cum for me, how desperate you are. How badly you want to cum." Emily mumbled against your neck, sending shivers down your spine.
You couldn't hold it anymore, and Emily knew it too. "Cum for me, my pretty girl." She whispered in your eat, biting your earlobe. You dug your nails into her arm, as you came against her fingers. You mumbled Emily's name against her hand, as you came down from your high.
Emily slipped her hand out of your pants, sliding her fingers into her mouth. "Oh how much I've missed this." You watched her, biting your lip. She was so fucking beautiful.
"You look like a mess, love. Let's fix you up before anyone sees you like this." Emily smiled, trying to fix your hair and her makeup that was on your lips.
After a couple of minutes, you two looked as best as you could be after she just fucked you. You prepared yourself before walking back into the room with your team, and your girlfriend.
You should feel guilty for just cheating on your girlfriend, but for some reason, you didn't. You were going to end it, maybe that's why you didn't feel guilty. She wasn't Emily.
Your girlfriend smiled as you sat back next to her, "what took you so long?"
"Sorry, must've drank too much." You replied, grabbing your wine glass. Your girlfriend burrowed her eyebrows, looking at your neck. She moved your hair, looking at what was there.
"What's that? That wasn't from me, so who was it from?" She asked, standing up. Oh shit. Fucking Emily. You looked at your team, they all had confusing looks on their faces. All but Emily. She had a smirk on her face.
You struggled to find words. You wouldn't lie to her, but your team couldn't know about Emily. You didn't know what to say, or blame it on.
"Oh, sorry. That would be from me." Emily raised her hand, drinking her wine. A few gasps dropped from our team, and my girlfriend looked sad. She quickly grabbed her things;
"I can't believe you would do this to me! And with your whole team right here?" She said before leaving. It was awkward now, the room was filled with silence.
"You owe me $50." Hearing JJ's voice tore you from your thoughts, lifting your head to look at your team. Of course they had a bet, why wouldn't they?
"Fuck, I was so close!" Garcia sighed, handing JJ a 50 dollar bill. JJ laughed, holding her hand out to everyone else at the table. They all rolled their eyes, handing her the money.
"A bet for what?" Emily spoke, her voice deep and filled with confusion.
Garcia smiled, looking at Emily. "We knew you two were sleeping together or something, then it stopped. We had a bet on when you two would sleep together again."
"How could you tell?"
Derek scoffed, "oh, come on. We're a team of profilers, it was so obvious. The way you two looked at each other, touching each other when you thought no one was looking. Or how Emily would get jealous, especially tonight."
"I was not jealous!"
"Then you wouldn't have slept with her in the next room. If you weren't jealous, you wouldn't have done anything with y/n." Garcia said, making Emily roll her eyes.
You loved your team, and you especially loved Emily. It was always going to be her, even if it took you a while to realize it.

——————————
“Wheels up in thirty.” Agent Hotchner announced and Bonnie could have hit the roof and landed in Seattle already not having needed to use the jet.
It had been three months this she started her new job as the BAU’s (Agents Hotchners) assistant and she’d been invited to assist on a case. Not as a profiler or an agent, but to help out. Sort things, write down information, and keep up to date. Like a walking talking diary for the team.
Her go bag has been ready since her first day and followed Emily closely towards the jet, it was magnificent. She’d never imagine she’d ever step foot in something like this.
“You like it?” Emily asked knowingly, and Bonnie chuckled.
“It’s amazing.”
“Very comfy too!”
And the two entered and found a seat.
The rest of the team followed shortly and she thought it was a bit cramped for seven people, but it was fine none the less.
“Three killings, all stabbed and had their hair cut off, all dumped around the Livingstone park. Within four weeks. Which means around one killing per week.” Agent Hotchner read from his file, one that each agent had been given by Jennifer and Bonnie began writing in her notepad.
“The hair means something to him. Women love their hair, this dude hates women. So what does he do? Take away their identity and their looks. He’s angry and wants them to feel as low as he does.” Derek waded in, and by instinct Bonnie stroked her own hair. She did love hers. It was unique. Bright orange when the sun shone down on her, and cool ginger when there was no light. She’d hate to have it all cut off or lose it somehow.
“I think he knows the area. That park is two thousand acres, he can cover a lot of ground.” Said Emily.
“Are we sure it’s a guy? I mean, it seems like it could be jealousy. Possibly a woman who doesn’t see herself as pretty or well liked and she attacks attractive women then defiles something that most of us care for and always want to look nice, our hair.” Jennifer commented and Agent Gideon frowned.
“You might be onto something JJ. They leave the bodies face up, no remorse for what they’ve done. It could either me a man suffering from rejection or a woman full of jealousy. We’ll have to take a closer look when we get down there.”
“Did you know that in a recent survey taken in a Las Vegas high school, girls were asked what aspect of themselves they treasure most, and the highest answer was their hair. Not their body or maybe their face, but their hair. I-I think it’s because your hair can really change the way you look. You can change your face with makeup and surgery and your body by exercising and-and eating, but it’s easier to get a haircut or dye it.” Spencer gifted the team with his extensive knowledge.
“So you think whoever’s doing this is to make their victims… ugly?” Agent Gideon questioned, looking down to Spencer who nodded.
“Possibly.”
“Well all the girls do look kinda similar. Dark hair, blue eyes, skinny.” Derek had said before Agent Hotchner spoke.
“When we arrive I want Reid, Morgan, JJ, down at the police station find out anything you can about what’s been done. Gideon, and Prentiss, and I will visit the dump site.” He closed the conversation swiftly, along with his file.
“What will I do?” Bonnie asked eagerly.
Agent Hotchner thought for a moment. “Come with me. But if you feel sick or something you can head back and go to the police station with the others.”
But she swore she wouldn’t. This is what she’s preparing for. Her future. She’d have to get used to gory scenes at some point. And she wanted to prove she was capable of helping the team.
“Yes sir.”
And shortly after, the jet landed and Bonnie dug her nails into the arms of her chair, scared they would crash but had instead rolled smoothly into an airport.
Immediately, agent Hotchner, Gideon, and Emily were on their way to the Livingstone National Park, Bonnie in the backseat next to Emily.
“You ever seen a dead body before.” Emily asked suddenly and Bonnie almost laughed at how absurd that question was.
“Once.” She kept her answer short. Not wanting to give any more information about her past to the team.
It was rough growing up. Her mother and father migrated to America from Scotland when she was twenty two, Bonnie was four. Her red hair a flame and full of wonder. Her parents were convinced about the American dream, but neither of them had ever kept down a job, instead they fell down a hole of drug addiction. At the age of eighteen, her mother had found herself pregnant after a faulty condom broke, then six years later, it was her little girl who found her father laying lifeless in their apartment bathroom. A drug overdose. Since then her and her mother have been eating small plates and sometimes using cold water for showers. The apartment in which they live in now isn’t great. It needs a lot of work but neither of them have money to pay for it. Bonnie was accepted to college for outstanding grades as a young age. Child prodigy as her mother would say and tell her every day how proud she was of her. But lately she hasn’t seen her much, or heard anything similar in a couple of years.
“Who was it?”
“Emily.” Agent Hotchner had a stern look on his face and she gulped.
“Sorry.”
“It’s ok. I’m sure you guys have seen lots. I’m just excited to be helping.”
Agent Gideon smiled a little. “Let’s hope you still feel that way when we’re done.”
They arrived at the park, and were welcomed by one of the rangers.
“Thank you for coming Sir. I’m Sandy Parker, head of the rangers and the park.” A broad woman possibly in her mid thirties with short red hair, a tattoo on her left arm, and a bulbous nose shook Agent Hotchners hand. She had been leaning up against a pick-up truck, the same colour as her hair.
“Thank you for letting us in. I’m SSA Aaron Hotchner, this here is SSA Jason Gideon, SSA Emily Prentiss, and Bonnie.”
And Bonnie. It sounded a little funny. Here’s three intelligent agents, and a kid. We’re here to solve the crime. Just like scooby doo.
“Oh my god am I the dog?” Bonnie thought to herself.
“Right this way. One of my coworkers Andy found her. He hasn’t blinked since.” Her tone was steady, deep, she must be very professional, or has seen something like this before.
As they were led through the forest, Bonnie noted how close the trees were. Not really good for entering. And she wrote it down. There had to be another entrance somewhere. It would be hard to move around in here without making a noise or dropping the body you carried.
Before she even knew it, the agents had stopped walking, and the three of them were staring downwards. So Bonnie did too, and almost vomited.
It was horrible. The girl must have been around her age. Brunette, small, skinny, but perky. That’s the ideal type isn’t it? To be thin but also have a little something going on. She knew that she want to be like that. But was rather flat, as she would put it when looking in the mirror.
The girls hair was chopped right to the scalp, bald patches shining here and there and some cuts on where the shearing had gone too close to the head.
The girls face was grey, totally lifeless. But what the worst part of it was, was that it was hardly a face. It had been mutilated with a blade.
“Fifteen stab wounds. Most to the face, some to the body which is probably what killed her.” Sandy sighed. “Poor girl. You never think something like this could ever happen to you. She was so pretty too… shame.” Sandy said staring right down at the girls bloody corpse.
In her notes, Bonnie wrote down about the overkill. The rage.
But was there hair here? On the ground? Or any blood splatters? If the girl was killed here, the hair that was cut should be here too.
“There’s no hair around here. Or blood.” She said.
“You’re right…” Agent Hotchner mumbled. “He’s not killing them here. He might be holding them.” And he flipped out his phone.
“Garcia, I need you to find missing persons report on brunette young girls, typically attractive, thin, and small.”
“She’s on it. Hopefully we can find out his type. And he might already found his next victim.”
Bonnie gulped hard.
Once there was nothing else to look at, the four began travelling back to the car through branches and twigs.
“That was some good spotting kid.” Agent Gideon made Bonnie jump.
“Oh… thank you sir.” Smiling gratefully.
“I hear your studying criminal justice?”
“Yes sir I am. I’m almost finished. I’ve been skipping a lot of grades and should be finished next year at some point.”
“Oh another genius! So tell me, what are you planning to do once you’re done?”
“FBI training.” She said proudly and Agent Gideon smiled.
“Well you’ve proven you know your stuff well. Keep it up and you’ll be in the BAU in no time. I’ll make sure of it. That’s how Spencer got in! Knew him when he was studying and could see his wits from miles away. Once he was done all he had to do was give me a call.”
If he was hinting at her doing the same thing, she might faint.
She’s always had a passion for justice. She was smart and wanted to use it for good. Help others. Save them. Make something of herself instead of falling into the same path are the one her mother is taking.
“So what have you found?” Agent Hotchner asked Jennifer who began filling him in on missing girl cases and had three pictures up on a clear board which Spencer was scribbling profusely on, while Derek read over the victims files.
“No sexual assault on any of them. I think JJ might be right. It might be a woman.”
Jennifer sighed. “But how is she doing it?”
“Being nice?” Bonnie suggested.
“Gaining their trust.” Said Gideon, taking a seat. “These young girls wouldn’t think twice about a woman or another young girl showing kindness would they? They’re more trustworthy than men.”
“I don’t know about you guys but I wouldn’t just walk away with a strange woman just because she’s nice to me.” Jennifer commented and Bonnie nodded her head agreeing.
Then Emily added, “Trustworthy. People of authority uh… police officers, nurses maybe, someone the public is brought up to know will help them.”
“So how’s she getting rid of the bodies.” Agent Hotchner asked the question they were all thinking.
“A car would be too small I think. Too easy to get evidence on it. So maybe a van, or a truck. Something bigger that would have space to hold someone.” Spencer spoke to the board he was staring at.
“Great. We’re ready to deliver the profile, good work guys.” Agent Hotchner left the room with the team following in his footsteps.
The whole police departement sat before them, looking up at them eagerly wanting just as much they did to catch the person doing this. Sandy from the park had also arrived. She wanted to find who was defiling her beloved park just like everyone else.
Agent Hotchner spoke first. “The person were looking for is female. All victims have been white so we feel safe to assume this unsub is too.”
Then Derek. “She’s someone trustworthy. It could be someone of the law or of some other authority. These girls don’t have to question whether or not they’re safe with the unsub.”
“She’s full of rage. These women are everything that she wants to be. Small, thin, pretty, and she’s taking her own insecurities out on them, shown by the over kill and cutting of hair.” Emily spoke up.
“So we’re looking for a woman who may not be the same age as these victims. She’s old enough to know the Livingstone area well and clever enough to plan out her attacks and kidnappings.” Said Spencer.
“That’s right. These aren’t spree killings or sudden fits of anger. These girls are being kidnapped, held, tortured, then murdered.” Agent Gideon finished, all of the detectives and officers had their mouths gaping. Sandy’s expression was sour and Bonnie couldn’t blame her. The innocence of these young girls were ripped from them cruelly. All because some bitch never learned how to love herself.
“That’s all for now. Thank you.” Agent Hotchner allowed the detectives to go back to work.
At that moment, Sandy had her phone to her ear, and looked wide eyed to Agent Hotchner. “Sir, they’ve found another body.”
“What? Already?” Bonnie followed quickly to keep up with his long strides and they ended up in the jeep, Emily and Derek in the back as Bonnie had accidentally taken the passenger seat. She could tell Derek was a little annoyed at that.
“Another body… they’re picking up the pace man.” Derek said worriedly and Agent Hotchner nodded.
“It’s weird… we were literally just there and the second we leave there’s another body… how?”
“Maybe they were watching us. They knew we were there and waited until we were gone to dump another.” Emily commented from her back seat.
Bonnie hadn’t seen anyone in the trees… maybe they were high up like a bird and she had missed it.
“Over this way!” Sandy yelled having beat them to the scene, this time in a small black car. The truck must be used for park purposes.
The team followed into the scraggly bushes, and went deep into the forest about a ten minute walk until they laid eyes on their latest victim.
Just the same as the last, but a more violent attack had occurred. The girls ear was missing, the other still intact with a dangly sapphire earring. Her face was practically gone. Mush.
“How could…” Bonnie choked and Emily lay a gently hand on her shoulder.
From the rest of her body, she looked young. Nineteen maybe twenty or eighteen. She had her whole life ahead of her and now it was nothing but ashes. They couldn’t even identify her yet…
“ID in her pocket. Drivers licence. Katy Darnwall, seventeen.” One of the officers handed Agent Hotchner the girls card with a glove. She was one of the girls on Spencer’s board.
Seventeen… possibly the youngest of the lot. Probably still in high school not yet completed her exams…
“That’s disgusting…” holding the back of her hand against her mouth, Bonnie took a deep breath while Emily squeezed her grip.
“How long has she been here?” Derek asked the officers.
“Dumped today. She’s still warm. A dog found her. He was off his leash.”
“If you like I can take you to the park station and we can call her parents.” Sandy suggested, looking down at the girl.
“No… we need to have a look around. See how the unsub got this deep in. There’s close trees, there has to be a path easier to get in.” Agent Hotchner shook his head and turned his attention to Emily and Derek.
“Split up and try and find the entrance, you too Bonnie, note down anything suspicious.”
And she obliged immediately. Anything not to look at the blood still pouring out of the young girls face.
On her way she went. Separating from the group with her notepad in hand. Writing as her mind refused to stop thinking for just a second.
“Woman… older… not very pretty, or thin.” She spoke out loud. “Truck or van…” just subconsciously, a face blinked in her mind. Sandy was a bit like that. She wasn’t trying to be mean or insulting but that’s just what the description made her think of. Maybe there’s someone living out here pretending to be a guide and luring these girls into a cabin or shed.
Bonnie had been walking through a dirt path for about ten minutes now, not even realising, and saw at the bottom of a hill was in fact, a shed. It was hard to see. Moss covered the sides and blended the building into the trees and bushes. Just like the rest of the forest, the trees were close together. Anyone walking past wouldn’t have even seen it.
But Bonnie really did love quizzes and challenges. Amazing at spot the difference and games were you had to find hidden objects in pictures that blended into its surroundings. She didn’t know what that game was called but she had named it ‘the chameleon game.’
Immediately she pulled out her phone to dial Agent Hotchners number, but no signal.
“Shit!” She cursed and turned back to the shed that looked pretty old. Shabby but… well kept. There was a garden with flowers. Tulips. And a small lake, almost like a big puddle about twenty feet away.
She couldn’t turn back now, she was afraid she’d forget her steps. So she went forward towards the shed.
Watching her footing, careful not to trip, she began her descent, and noticed there was a path to her left. That must be how this person is getting the victims out easily, instead of treading through all these branches. Another on the right near the puddle lake. Must be how they get in.
“Hey.” Bonnie’s soul almost left her body and she slipped down onto the dirty ground, covering her skirt in dry mud.
Whipping around she saw Sandy and sighed with relief, getting back to her feet. “Hey… did you know this shed was here?” She asked, pointing in the direction.
“Never seen that thing in my life.” The woman shrugged.
But she’s the head of the rangers right? She needs to know all about the park.
“How come?” She asked innocently, as anxiety began to fill her stomach, something wasn’t right.
“Just never saw it. Some of these woods are still undiscovered.”
Well that couldn’t be true. There was a map at the station for visitors so they don’t get lost. Unless this wasn’t on the map.
“Oh right… well…” she didn’t really know what to do now.
“We’ll check it out together alright? I’m here with you. Nothing to be afraid of.” Sandy’s smile had eased her, so she began to walk. Trusting her.
The closer to the shed she got, the louder the alarms were in her head. But she didn’t know what to do about them. Sandy was here, but Bonnie was beginning to doubt whether that was a good thing.
Older woman, not ideally pretty, not thin, trustworthy, authoritative, truck… it all added up and formed into the woman walking right next to her.
And… had she been following her? She was a long way away from the dump site, why hadn’t she let herself be known…
Sandy was a few steps in front of her, and Bonnie caught a glimpse of something shiny. “What’s that?” She had suddenly asked, curious on the little blue gem in Sandy’s hand, twirling between her fingers.
“Just a little something I found.”
Katy Darnwall’s missing earrings.
The look of realisation must have been clear, as Sandy smiled and approached Bonnie slowly, and once reached, took strands of her hair through her stubby fingers, admiring it in her hand.
“Y’know, in all my life I’ve actually never seen someone with ginger hair before. Must be a foreign thing. It’s very pretty. Just like you. You’re thin, small, got nice rosy cheeks.” To which she pinched Bonnies face. A little too hard and Bonnies breathing hitched.
She wanted to cry out of fear. Scream for Agent Hotchner or Emily who wouldn’t even hear her. Someone safe. Someone to save her.
“And gorgeous blue eyes! Y’know how rare it is for ginger people to have blue eyes? Only zero point two percent in the entire world has that.” She looked down at Bonnie with a twisted smile, still playing with her hair in her fingers, with her free hand she stroked her cheek.
“I bet you’ve had a lot of boyfriends huh?”
“N-no… I’ve never dated anyone.” And that was true. She didn’t have the time nor the confidence to do so.
“Oh really? Why’s that? You’re a really beautiful girl. No one would ever want to date someone like me.” Sandy laughed, a little crazed. “But you… I know everyone wants a piece of you, and I hate you!” The hair between Sandy’s fingers was yanked hair and Bonnie fell down, suddenly feeling the weight of a boulder coming down on her face.
Scared and unsure what was happening, she pushed up hard, and rolled down the rest of the hill with Sandy running behind her. Hitting her head on stones or twigs on the earthy ground until she came to a quick stop and jumped, bolting for the shed.
“Get back here you little shit!” Bonnie screamed with fright and tried to door handle which didn’t budge, and dipped out the way before the pocket knife in which Sandy had pulled out collider with the wooden door, piercing it right through.
As she sprinted behind the shed she whipped out her phone and prayed for even just a little signal, but came up blank. But she pressed the call button anyways, letting it ring in her pocket.
There was the path to her left. The one which Sandy must have been using to dispose the bodies. If she followed it, it could lead her back to the team. Back to Agent Hotchner who’d know what to do.
The air was went still. Bonnie stifled sobs from pressing her back against the shed, trying to hear footsteps or dirt crunching to get an idea on where Sandy was now.
But there was nothing. Which was more terrifying actually.
Run for it. You’re quick and she’s a little bigger than you are. She might not catch you.
Bonnie crept to the edge of the shed where she reluctantly peeked her head round the corner to see it open. Wanting to not think about anything anymore, her legs took control and she was running towards the path.
That was when Sandy pounced. She was a hunter. Knew how to catch prey in these woods, and she was pretty quick on her feet.
“HELP!” Bonnie screamed into the woods as hot tears rolled down her face. She didn’t have protection like the others with their guns. She had her bare hands and feet that were shaking all over she didn’t know how much she could run.
“HOTCH!” She screamed again, begging for the one member of the team she longed for. His approval, his praise, everything. He was just amazing. So calm and preserved yet caring and understanding. She felt safe when she worked with him and always felt bubbly when he smiled at her. He was the only person she thought of when running.
Sandy was catching at a frightening speed, like a cheeta chasing an antelope, and Bonnies skirt wasn’t in her favour, restricting the movement of her legs, which she would curse out later for possibly being the reason she had been caught so quickly.
Sandy was on top of her again in a flash, but she kicked with all her might and strength in her body to stop the woman from turning her into her next victim.
“Bonnie!” The sound of a man’s voice slipped through her ears, not really processing it at all as her brain was too busy instructing Bonnie on how to dodge a blade.
One hard kick after bringing her knees up close to her chin had done the trick to loosen the larger woman’s grip on her and she crawled backwards, eyes manic with fear but she had forgotten how to stand.
Though she didn’t have to.
“Stop right there!” It was Derek, standing on higher ground pointing his gun directly at Sandy who had not paid him any attention. Instead she was looking hungrily in the direction of Bonnies small frame. Snarling like an animal fighting for food.
The woman lunged and Bonnie screamed.
Then a gunshot.
Bonnies shut eyes tentatively opened, and was horrified by the bloody scene in front of her.
Sandy had been shot through the chest. One clean shot. Her blood pooled around her body, as well as dripped from Bonnies nose.
“Kid?! Are you alright?” Derek’s voice was muffled. She couldn’t stop staring at the woman.
“She tried… she tried to…” she was ashamed on how her sobs broke loose but was comforted by the strong arms of Derek around her.
Picking her up swiftly with the young girl clinging onto his shoulders, legs weak, she watched as Sandy’s lifeless figure became smaller and smaller until she was gone.
She must have fallen asleep or passed out because when she opened her eyes again, her and Derek had just arrived back at the park station.
The strong man put her down and steadied her with his hand.
“You alright? You’re not hurt or anything?” He questioned frantically, checking her for cuts or bruises.
“I don’t know… my arm is a little sore.” Derek pulled her blazer up and winced.
“Must have got you and you didn’t realise. Will need stitches.” His gaze softened and his hand caressed her cheek, it was much more friendly than Sandy’s.
“Some first case right?” She had tried to joke but choked on a sob afterwards.
There was embarrassment and let down. She wanted to be in this field so badly but had fumbled her first chance.
“Bonnie! Oh my god, thank god you’re safe.” Once the pair walked in, Agent Hotchner sped over and had engulfed her in a hug, which she returned tightly. “You did it. You found her, seriously well done.”
She didn’t understand.
“What do you mean?”
“Your call to me, Garcia tracked it and Derek found you first. Officers are down at the shed and have found two girls. Without you, they wouldn’t have been found.”
Bonnie could have vomited now with the knowledge that she had been right at that shed and had no idea… but how could she? She tried the door and it was locked. She couldn’t get in if she wanted to. She couldn’t kick down door the way Derek could.
“But I failed.” Her lip quivered.
“Failed?” Jennifer scoffed with a smile. “Bonnie you caught her. And those other girls are safe now because of you. I’d call that success.”
“Days in the field are hard. Sometimes it gets rough.” Agent Gideon nodded his head.
“But if Derek hadn’t-“
“No. Enough. You did good. And I’m sorry for sending you out there alone… if I had any idea then…” Agent Hotchner sighed. “We found out probably the same time as you when we realised Sandy had gone. We were looking everywhere and your call helped us find you.”
Bonnie pulled the phone out of her pocket and checked that it had eventually went through.
“Thank you.” She whispered and Agent Hotchner led her outside with the rest of the team, away to get some medical treatment to which Bonnie still couldn’t really feel her arm. She just knew that it hurt. The blood on her coat said otherwise however.”
Fresh stitches, clean clothes, a good rest. The plane back to DC would be a little while and she was very excited to sleep, though she wasn’t sure if she’d be able to commit to it.
She’d never been attacked like that before. It had been a serious eye opener to who the BAU actually deal with. But then there was thrill to do it all over.
“So…caught your first bad guy today huh?” Emily said with a smirk on her face at the other side of the table in the jet.
Bonnie chuckled. “I guess so.”
“I read your notes. You were ahead of us. I couldn’t imagine how scary that must have been though. Figuring it out alone when the person is right there next to you… that must have sucked ass.”
“It did. But it’s over now.”
Emily winked to Bonnie. “Damn right it’s over. If you were of age I’d offer you a drink.”
“Legal age in Scotland is eighteen y’know.”
“Yeah well, I’m not ready to lose my badge yet.” The two of them laughed. Bonnie didn’t drink anyways, she hated it.
“So… would you like to tell me what the first body you ever saw was then?” Emily asked and Bonnie twisted her mouth as she stared around the window at the soft clouds passing by.
“My dad.” She said absently. “Drug overdose. I was six. Me and my mum have been ourselves ever since.”
Emily frowned deeply and stretched her hand over to where Bonnies lay on the table. “Well, if you ever need someone I’m only a phone call away. We all are. Each of us all have some sort of trouble one way or another… you’re part of the team even if you’re an assistant. You’re part of the BAU.”
Bonnie smiled in spite of the void in her chest, sniffed before closing her eyes.
“Thank you… Emily.”

Running in Circles | Chapter 9
Tumblr media
Word Count: 3.6K
Summary: (Y/N) Rossi is following in her father’s footsteps by joining the BAU team as a profiler. The girl genius knew almost everything but she could have never predicted falling for Aaron Hotchner, her boss, and her father’s friend. in their world mutual feelings are not enough to push them together. Will all the adversities and obstacles they face pull them together or push them apart forever?
A/N: can't believe it's been over a year since I updated this story. It was one of the first I ever posted but quickly got disheartened by it as I tried to follow the show's timeline (which is non-existent, honestly). I'm trying to get through season 6 as fast as I can because I've already written chapters for afterward, but I need to tie it into the show. Honestly considered putting the story on hold but I got the chapter done 😊😊 Also need to go back and edit this story, especially regarding the POV

As if by divine intervention, (Y/N)’s phone started ringing. The vibrations matched the fluttering of her heart as she prayed that Hotch could have been thinking about her at that moment as well. Maybe then she could trick herself into believing that fate was playing its cards right.
“Hey, baby girl.”
“Derek,” she sighed quietly, trying her best not to voice her disappointment. “What’s up? Everything okay?”
“You mind some company for tonight? I got a bottle of whiskey with our names on it.”
“Know what? After the day we just had, sure.” She looked down at the pan of lasagna and decided if she couldn’t enjoy it with Hotch, she’d enjoy it with a friend. “I’ve got some lasagna going in the oven we can eat.”
“Sounds perfect. I’ll see you in about fifteen minutes.”
After the phone clicked, she decided the most prudent thing would be to send Hotchner a text message thanking him for the food and saying she’d update him on everything tomorrow. After everything that had happened in the past twenty-four hours, she needed a moment of calm and clarity. A moment with certainty rather than mixed signals and stolen glances. She just needed a moment to breathe.
As any evidence of the day shed from her skin in the shower, a loud knock rang through the house. She quickly stepped out of her bathroom and slipped on a pair of sweatpants and a hoodie before she ran down the stairs to be met with Derek already inside the kitchen, digging a fork into the piping hot lasagna, with Spencer staring at our friend as he ate like a maniac.
“You know, if you let it cool down a bit, you can savor the taste,” Reid chuckled.
“I know,” he spoke with a full mouth. “But I wanna get drunk tonight, and I won’t do it on an empty stomach.”
“There’s some garlic bread in the toaster oven if you need something that will soak up the alcohol,” (Y/N) laughed as her two friends came into view in her kitchen. “And it’s good to see you’re putting those emergency keys to good use.”
“Sorry, (Y/N),” Spencer responded quickly. “Derek said you wouldn’t mind. We waited five minutes outside.”
“It’s fine, Reid. But you could’ve checked who was at the door.”
“Well, I didn’t want to overstep,” he shrugged. “It’s not my house after all.”
“Good to know you have boundaries, Reid,” she chuckled. “Not that they stopped either of you from letting yourselves in.”
Derek only grumbled in response, too focused on serving the plates and stuffing his mouth. (Y/N) headed to the front door, unsure of who else could have decided to drop by. And though a part of her wanted it to be Hotchner, she knew better than to live in that delusion. He was back in his home with his son, while she had a house full of friends and him on her mind.
“‘Em,” the woman smiled as she opened the door. “Derek invite you too?”
“As a matter of fact, he did. But I’m guessing he didn’t tell you I was coming over.”
“I’m just glad you didn’t use your emergency key as freely as those two boys.”
“Well, you did say we should feel at home,” Morgan grinned. “I’m just doing what you told me to.”
“First time you follow the rules, Morgan,” Emily teased. “Although I’d rather you guys break into (Y/N)’s house than mine.”
“Geez, thanks, Em,” she chuckled. “You’re lucky there’s enough food and booze to go around. But don’t go too crazy. We still have work tomorrow.”
“As if you’d ever let us go hungry,” Emily laughed. “Your Italian blood would never let you.”
“All I need to know is if there’s anyone else that will show up out of the blue.”
“Not that I know of,” Derek shrugged. “Now open up that bottle, I’m thirsty.”
By the time midnight rolled around, Emily and Derek had gone back home. They had eaten enough and drank enough the exhaustion was making their eyelids flutter. And all of them knew that the longer they stayed, the harder it would be to make it back to their homes. Only Spencer was left, curled up on the sofa, still nursing the same glass of whiskey from the start of the night. His eyes were squeezed shut, a hand over them blocking the overhead light.
“You okay, Spence?” (Y/N) asked as she sat by his head, resting it gently onto her lap. She ran her fingers through his curls, massaging his scalp softly. “You got a migraine?”
“Something like that,” he sighed. “They’ve been going on for a bit, but lately, they’ve been worse. The pain is unbelievable, and it makes me sensitive to everything around me.”
“Have you gone to a doctor? This could be something serious, Spence,” she worried. “I have a friend that might be able to squeeze you in. She’s a neurologist and…”
“I’ve got it handled, (Y/N),” he chuckled softly. “I made an appointment for later in the week. I just have to power through the remaining days with sunglasses and pills.”
As soon as he mentioned the pain, a question popped into (Y/N)’s head that she did not want to ask. It was composed of words that could only bring back horrors from his past and the mistakes he was still paying for to that day. The last thing she wanted was to resurface that horrible period, but she had to know. For his sake, she just had to.
“I haven’t taken Dilaudid,” he said before she could speak. “It hasn’t even crossed my mind.”
“How did you…?”
“You were thinking too loud,” he responded as he grinned slightly, his eyes still closed. “And you’re the only one that still asks.”
“I’m sorry, Spence. I don’t mean to be so pushy, she sighed as she stared at the way her fingers ran through the brown of his hair. “If you don’t want time to ask, just…”
“No. I’m grateful that you do.” His free hand searched for hers, squeezing it softly as he enjoyed the warmth of her skin. “I sometimes feel that the team goes out of their way to pretend that part of my life didn’t happen or that it could never happen again. But it did, and it could. Still, I know I can always count on you to look after me, (Y/N). Even if I’m a couple of years older than you, you always find a way to take care of me.”
“And I always will, Reid. You’re a part of my family, and I take care of my family,” she responded softly. “Do you wanna stay here tonight? If it’s too bad, I don’t want you driving out there in the dark.”
“Honestly? Yeah,” Spencer breathed. “I don’t think I could make it home right now.”
“Alright, then. Why don’t you head on up and take a shower while I prepare you some tea and get you a cold compress for your head?” (Y/N) instructed. “You can take any of the sweats from the guest room, and I’ll fetch you some migraine pills so you can hopefully get some shut-eye tonight.”
“Thanks, Rossi,” the man smiled, finally allowing his eyes to open, finding that she had dimmed all the lights. “Don’t know what I’d do without you.”
“And you’ll never have to find out,” she smiled. “Now, go on upstairs, and I’ll get started on the tea.”
“Fine,” he jokingly whined. “And can you not tell anyone else? I don’t want them worrying about me.”
“I won’t. Just, please keep me updated.”
“Copy that.”
As he disappeared to the second floor, (Y/N) couldn’t help but worry about her friend. Spencer had gone through things that were unimaginable. And though he came out of them with his life, they had slowly started to eat away at him. She knew firsthand just how debilitating anxiety could be to someone’s body, and it concerned her that he was downplaying his symptoms.
She set her kettle to boil as she searched for her own mixture of sleepy-time tea—chamomile, lemongrass, peppermint, and lavender. From her cupboard, she pulled out the purple and blue mug Spencer had always used since he had claimed it was able to keep his tea warm enough to sip slowly. Because apparently it had always been a big concern of his. After placing the tea infuser into the mug, she drizzled a few circles of honey to the bottom and a sprinkle of cinnamon. And once the kettle beeped, she drowned the leaves and the honey in boiling water.
(Y/N) could hear the shower running upstairs as she let the tea seep into the water, and all she could do was worry. Granted, it was something she did every single day of her life. She worried about her father spending all his time in books and his work and not enough on his personal life. She worried about little Jack having to grow up without his mother and a dad who didn’t quite believe he could do a good job as a father. She worried about Hotch, about what he did or didn’t feel. She worried about the team every time they went out on a case. And most importantly, she worried about herself and how she would ever live up to the people around her. Now, she added Spencer’s migraines to the list. If she ever made it to old age without a heart attack, she would have been very surprised.
Walking up the stairs with the mug and the pills, her phone vibrated in her pocket. She balanced the mug on the flat handrail and pulled out the device to see Hotchner’s name lighting up the screen. Her heart hammered against her chest, making her hands tremble with nerves. It was just a phone call., she told herself. He was probably only calling to thank her again.
“Hotch,” she breathed, her voice croaking more than she intended. “Hey.”
“Sorry. Did I wake you?”
“No!” she answered quickly. “I was just heading up the stairs. Is everything okay?”
“Yeah, you don’t need to worry,” he assured. “It’s just that Jack wanted to say goodnight and thank you.”
“Isn’t it a bit late for him to be up?” (Y/N) smiled. “I mean, it is still a school night.”
“I caved,” Hotch chuckled. She could hear the exhaustion still present in his voice, and all she wanted to do was help him. It was all she could do. To him, she’d always be just a friend, a coworker, his colleague’s daughter. “Please don’t hold it against me.”
“I could never,” the woman laughed. “I would have probably caved too.”
“Well, then, I’ll put you on.”
(Y/N) heard scuffling from the receiver before Jack’s voice came through. “Hi, (Y/N),” he said. “I wanted to say goodnight since we couldn’t say goodbye to you. I had a lot of fun this weekend.”
“Aw, buddy, I’m glad,” she cooed. “I loved having you over. You know you’re welcome any time.”
“Thank you, (Y/N)!” he beamed. “But I gotta go to bed now. I have school tomorrow. So, goodnight!”
“Good night, Jack,” she responded. “Now, why don’t you pass the phone back to your dad.”
“Alright. Bye bye!”
“Bye, Jack,” she chuckled. “I think that kid should be heading off to bed now, Hotch.”
“He is,” Hotchner answered. “I knew he’d want to after saying good night to you. I think my son likes you more than he likes me.”
“Oh, that’s nonsense, Hotch. He only likes that I’m all fun. But he loves you. Don’t ever doubt that.”
“Thanks, (Y/N),” he chuckled softly. “I’ve been saying that a lot lately.”
“Even when you don’t have to,” the woman sighed contentedly. “Now, go on. You have to sleep too. It’s not just Jack that is up past his bedtime.”
“Very funny, (Y/N). Good night.”
“Night, Hotch.”
(Y/N)’s chest wrenched as her heart accelerated, already wishing the days before could repeat themselves so she could wake and know that he was there. But there was no point in deluding herself. The man could not and would not ever see her as anything more than what she already was. Even their job would allow it. Nothing seemed to ever align for something between them to work.
She turned to the left once she reached the top of the stairs and headed to the guest room to leave the steaming mug for Spencer to find after his shower but found him already sitting on the bed drying his hair. “Was that Hotch on the phone?” She nodded in response. “You didn’t tell him about what’s going on with me, right?”
“Of course not, Spence,” she said in a low tone as she set the mug on the nightstand. “It’s not my information to divulge. Unless it becomes life-threatening, I won’t say a thing without your permission.”
“Can I ask you something?”
“Of course,” she smiled, handing him the pills. “Anything.”
“What do you think these migraines could be?” The pain behind his eyes was more than visible, it was almost palpable. “I just… what if it’s something serious, (Y/N)?”
“Serious like what, Spence?”
“What if I’m starting to lose my mind?” His voice was frail, trembling at the terrifying thought. “You know, my mom…”
“Don’t go there, Spencer. You can’t go there,” the woman insisted. “We won’t speculate until you have an answer from the doctor. So, I’m begging you, don’t go there.”
“I can’t help it, (Y/N). Either there’s something seriously physically wrong with me, or it’s all psychosomatic. Neither is a good option.”
“I know, Spence. I know. But let’s just not jump to conclusions yet. Not until you’ve gone to the doctor, and we get some type of answer. Until then, I don’t want you to think of the worst-case scenario. It’s not gonna do you any good.”
“Fine,” he sighed as his shoulders slumped forward. “Can I ask you something else? Something that is so off-topic you’ll get whiplash.”
“Go ahead, Reid,” she chuckled softly.
“Do you still have feelings for Hotch?”
The question as innocent, no ill-will behind it. But it still made (Y/N)’s breath hitch in her throat. It had been a long time since any of the people they knew mentioned her less-than-secret infatuation with the unit chief, and it made her heart race like the first time he had confronted her about it. “Yeah,” she muttered. “It’s not something that’s going away any time soon.”
“Have you ever thought of dating someone else? It might help you get over him.”
“I might not be ready for that just yet,” she sighed. “I just can’t seem to stop holding onto hope.”
“I understand. Love… it’s hard, huh?”
“It’s one thing we can’t learn from all the books we read,” she smiled sadly. “But that’s enough talk. The pills should start to work soon, and you need to sleep.”
“Thanks, (Y/N),” he smiled as he got under the covers. “Thank you for caring.”
“You don’t need to thank me for that, Spence. Again, you’re family,” she grinned. “I’ll see you in the morning, alright?”
“Yeah. Good night.”
“Good night, Reid.”
The rest of the night, Spencer’s words floated in her head. She could open her dating pool and allow herself a little venture. Hotch wasn’t waiting for her, nor had he shown a smidge of real interest in her. Holding onto him only hurt her in the long run, making it harder for anyone else who wanted to take the place he did not want. But she couldn’t. Not now. Not just yet.
After a couple of days and a two-night case all the way in Miami, Spencer asked (Y/N) to accompany him to the doctor for the reading of his test results. He was jumpier than usual, his legs bouncing at a rapid speed as they waited for his name to be called. He figured with his fingers, picking at the skin on the corners until she placed her hand on top.
“You won’t have any skin left for our next case,” she chuckled. “Don’t start jumping to conclusions, Mr. Genius.”
“I can’t help it,” he worried. “It’s all I can do. I can’t just shut off my brain.”
“Then, tell me something. Something I might not know.”
“Easier said than done,” he snorted. “You know almost as much as I do.”
“Ah, you said almost as much. So, you believe there are things that you know that I don’t.”
“Okay,” he chuckled. “Did you know that rubber bands last longer if they’re kept in the fridge? The unusual, lightly cross-linked polymer structure of the rubber used to create them react to the cold differently to what people might expect…”
“Right, the chains heat up when stretched, technically shortening them causing the rubber to contract and eventually snapping at the exothermic change,” she mused. “Cooling them would allow for a bigger stretch and life longevity because the release of energy is slower. Nice fact.”
“See, it’s not as fun with you,” he said with a soft chuckle. “The team would have been asking why I would care about rubber bands. You? You go into a simple explanation of thermodynamics.”
“Well, I ask you for a fun fact. I never said I wouldn’t analyze it.”
As Spencer was about to retort, a nurse came out to call his name, telling him the doctor would see him. He got up onto his feet, smoothing down his pants and taking a steadying breath. But he didn’t seem to do more.
“Do you want me to go with you?” (Y/N) quickly offered.
She was met with a soft smile and a gentle nod before they both headed into the office where Spencer’s worst-case scenario unfolded. The doctor told him there was nothing he could see that was physically wrong with him, the scans and the lab work all came back negative. If there was something happening, it was most likely in his head.
Those were the news Spencer did not want. They terrified him, and he let the doctor know. In his own way. “It’s not—I’m not crazy.”
“Crazy? Dr. Reid, I’m not saying…”
“I have headaches. I have intense sensitivity to light. Because there’s something wrong with me,” he asserted, his words spilling out faster than he could hold them. “Physically, not mentally. It’s not that.”
“That?”
“Listen, doctor, my mother’s a paranoid schizophrenic who’s been institutionalized. So I know very well what mental illness looks like,” Spencer continued. “Maybe even better than you, and it’s not that. It’s not.”
“Reid,” (Y/N) called as the man got up from the exam table and left the doctor with a shocked expression on his face. “I am so sorry, doctor. This topic is just… it’s a little hard for him.”
“There’s not much you can do to help someone who doesn’t want to accept their reality,” the doctor sighed softly. “Can you just see that he finds a way to manage his stress and his emotions? I truly believe this might be one of the biggest reasons for these headaches.”
“I’ll try my best, doctor,” (Y/N) smiled. “Thank you for seeing him.”
“No problem.”
She found Spencer waiting for her in the hall, his sunglasses on his eyes and his arms crossed in front of his chest. They remained in silence until they reached her car, the doctor’s pout evident on his face. She knew he was annoyed she had apologized for his behavior, but she couldn’t leave without at least giving a reason for his outburst.
“It’s not psychosomatic,” he stated. “It just can’t be.”
“Spence, we have one of the most stressful jobs on the planet. Day in and day out we see cases that astound even the most seasoned officers. And we get into the minds of the people that commit these atrocities,” she offered. “Don’t you think there is a possibility that these migraines are your body’s way of telling you that you need to balance yourself out?”
“If it was really the job like you say, all of us would be getting these headaches,” he said angrily. “But I don’t see Morgan or Prentiss doubling over because their brain feels like it wants to escape their skull.”
“Everyone is different, Spence. And I know you don’t need me to tell you this. Stress presents itself differently in everyone. Just because we don’t know how they handle their burdens doesn’t mean they don’t have them,” (Y/N) continued, maintaining the same calm tone as she cooled him down. “All I am saying, Reid, is that it might be psychosomatic, and you need to find new ways to handle your stress because I am certain this is not you going crazy. Or it might be something else, and you’ll need to get a second opinion. But regardless of what the outcome is, you can’t just get angry at your doctor because you don’t like your results, and I’ll be with you every step of the way. We’ll find you a way through this, okay?”
His stance finally softened at her words. His arms fell to his sides, and a soft smile tugged at his lips. “I was kind of an ass back there,” he chuckled. “It’s just frustrating and terrifying all the same time, and I don’t know how to process it all.”
“We take it one day at a time, Reid,” she smiled, taking a hand of his in hers. “You’re not alone in this.”
“It’s sometimes hard to remember that you’re you get than me,” he snickered. “I’m pretty sure you’ve babied everyone on the team at some point.”
“What can I say?” she laughed. “I just wanna make sure every single one of you is okay.”
And that was one thing she knew she would do for as long as they would let her. For now, her main concern was Spencer’s well-being. And she was grateful that it was enough to keep Hotchner out of her head.
