Also, that being said, if you ever feel the urge to add snippets to the Backhoe universe please do 🫡🫡🫡🫡💖
I do have the urge to write some Backhoe snippets but I also need to manifest free time when I am not so deeply brain dead tired I fall asleep immediately which has been difficult as of late.
But I was just thinking today that I kinda want to write them on 4th July a year later after the first community fireworks show they attended together?
They're officially engaged now and last year everyone had kinda thought Steve was Becca's boyfriend but he's actually Bucky's fiance so how do they navigate that when half the town comes up to them and is like, "oh it's the guy from Brooklyn!" And then tell Bucky wedding bells are going to be in the air soon, is he ready for that?
And they look significantly at Becca and it's supposed to be a sorta low key sexist joke about how Becca is getting married to some guy from Brooklyn and Bucky's expected to be protective of his sister's virtue. And honestly it makes sense on paper that they'd assume that.
Becca is the one who lives in Boston for college and is more likely to have met some kind of skinny artist city boy to bring home, but anyone with eyes willing to really look could tell from a mile away while riding a bucking bronco that Bucky is the one who is running headlong and desperate to marry the guy from Brooklyn.
So Becca says, "he's ready, but I ain't so sure" and they laugh real hard because they think she's just made a joke like Bucky wants to marry her off to the first guy whose come calling so he has one less sister to take care of and the sassy way she rolls her eyes at Bucky makes everyone say something like, "you got your work cut out for you with all these sisters, Barnes!"
And Bucky says, "Lawwww don't I know it, cain't imagine it otherwise. Busy hands, full heart, as mom always said," which is what his mother always used to say when someone said something like that to her. And the random person walks off.
This interaction repeats itself in various iterations a dozen or more times over the evening. But every now and then someone wanders over to say hi to the Barnes conglomeration picnic blanket and immediately clocks Steve and Bucky for a young couple that's so in love they're about to burst.
Like Mrs. Wilson's pastor, who pulls Bucky up out of his chair and into a bear hug, whispering something into Bucky's ear that no one else can hear.
He let's Bucky go with a broad grin and a hearty slap on the back and a wink for Steve. "You got your work cut out for you with this one, Steven," Mrs. Wilson's pastor booms in his low voice with a wink. Bucky's eyes are glossy with a few tears from whatever the pastor whispered to him and Steve is overwhelmed with how beautiful his fiance (FIANCE!!) looks.
"Busy hands, full heart," Steve says, and Bucky's eyes get even shinier, and Steve really wants to kiss Bucky, but they are surrounded by Bucky's entire county so he doesn't.
It's the first year Poppy doesn't fall asleep at the fireworks show. Bucky almost cries realizing she's growing up, and he doesn't have to carry her to the van. But on the other hand she's 4 inches taller and a fair bit more than 4 pounds heavier than last year so he's kind of relieved he's not lugging her the half a mile back to the van. So it's complicated.
After they get home and get all the girls upstairs for bed, Bucky asks Steve if he wants to go on a walk.
They don't make it too far before Steve grabs Bucky and presses him hard against a tree, all strong hands and desperate lips. It's all a dream until they try and get too creative and fall in the creek.
Some time later they stumble back to the house laughing and giddy and exchanging lazy debauched kisses with wet hair and their shirts off and pants barely done back up (because the creek caused a pause but was not sufficient to cool them off).
Bucky stops up short and freezes because Hannah and Becca are sitting on the front porch, drinking ice tea and chatting in the dark out on the porch swing.
"It's after midnight, y'all should be in bed," Bucky says automatically.
Becca let's out a peal of laughter. "You are not in a position to lecture others about who should be in a bed for their evening's planned activities."

Greg House x Dr Anna Harding (OFC)
Story Masterlist
Chapter 34 - Turning Point
House got his ankle bracelet got taken off, he was finally able to come over to my flat for dinner. We hung out and talked about his time in prison, his parole, but mostly we talked about music and rock climbing. Everything was easy again, we weren’t in a relationship but we were getting along.
The only spanner in the works was when Chase was stabbed, there would be a hearing and everyone was panicking, but I told House I was going to keep my distance until it was over. The only exception I made was to visit Chase in the ICU. We had a little banter, but I left soon after.
The outcome of the hearing was that it was nobody’s fault, but House believed it was his and I felt for him.
‘Sometimes bad things happen,’ I told him while we watched tv on my sofa on night. ‘Doesn’t mean it’s your fault and it doesn’t mean you should try and make up for it by interfering with Chase’s life. But I know you won’t listen, so I ask that you keep me out of it and tell him I’m here if he needs to talk.’
House turned so that we were face to face, I felt his breath against my mouth. ‘Okay.’ He said, his eyes glanced over my face and felt my chest stutter. He noticed and I couldn’t look away.
I missed his lips. I missed his touch, his gentle whimpers and heavy moans. I missed his body against mine, his low growls beneath my ears, I missed the way he could make us both laugh whilst also making me crave more of whatever he was doing to me. I missed the way he made me come.
‘Wait,’ he panted, his hand moving through my hair as he frowned down at me. He kissed me harshly. ‘When’s the last time you had sex?’ His mouth descended down my neck, he knew how to keep me riding the high.
‘I don’t know.’ I panted, running my hands up his back and into his hair. ‘Why does it matter?’
I felt his hips pushing against mine. ‘I can feel it’s been a while,’ he gently bit the crook of my neck, making me moan out. ‘I just wanna how long so I can brag afterwards.’
I couldn’t help but laugh. ‘Well, if that’s the only reason, I’d rather not say.’
I felt him slow down and lift his head to look down at me, his blue eyes scanned over my face and the realisation set in.
‘Don’t ruin this, Greg.’ I asked, nicely.
House shook his head, kissing me gently. ‘Sofas no place for the kind of reunion I’ve got in mind.’
He took me into the bedroom and it was like old times again, we laughed, he made me come undone time and time again before he was inside me, then he was slow and methodical. We were making love again and this time it was my turn to cry. I missed him. I missed everything about the way he made me feel. I was in love with him.
‘You got married?’ Anna said, catching House alone in the elevator.
‘I was really hoping you wouldn’t find out.’ He said, wincing at the thought.
‘You really think I wouldn’t?’
It took him a moment to realise she wasn’t angry, in fact she was smirking at him.
‘You let me know when the green card meeting is over,’ she chuckled. ‘There might be some dinner in it for you.’
House felt his chest deflate and his mouth curled up into a smile. Anna got off on her floor and he watched her feeling incredibly lucky and very undeserving. He just had to get through this next week.
I was in the lobby signing a few charts when Wilson walked in with an older woman I didn’t recognise, I imagined it was just his mother and smiled politely.
‘I’m sure you already know Anna.’ Wilson said, approaching me. I frowned thinking it was odd that he’d assume I knew his mum.
‘Oh no, Greg never did let us meet.’ She chuckled, softly.
I was suddenly stuck for words. ‘You’re House’s mum.’ I realised, shaking her hand. ‘Sorry, I was just putting two and two together.’
‘That’s alright,’ she smiled like it was default. ‘I didn’t realise you were British. Where are you from?’
‘London, born and bred I’m afraid.’
‘Oh nonsense, I’m sure London is lovely.’
‘Well, it has its moments.’ I tried to play it diplomatically, but this really wasn’t my area. ‘You’re looking for House, I presume?’
‘We’re just about to head up to the office.’ Wilson confirmed. ‘You coming?’
‘I’ve actually got clinic duty, patients waiting, but it was lovely to meet you.’
I watched them head towards the lift and breathed a sigh of relief.
It was a long afternoon and Wilson was a little worried, but I had too much to do to worry about it. When I walked into House’s office and found Park lounging in his chair, she giggled at me and pointed.
‘I cannot believe you guys slept together.’ She said, still laughing. ‘You’re like super hot and he’s not and your British, that automatically makes you hotter than anyone I’ve ever met and the fact that you’re off the scale hot and actually chose to sleep with that guy… maybe you’re the one who’s tripping.’
I blinked and turned to House. ‘Why is Park high?’ I asked.
‘It’s a long boring story.’ He said. ‘You done for the day?’
‘Kind of, I need to pop out,’ I nodded. ‘Wilson introduced to your mother this afternoon?’
‘Yeah I saw.’
‘You saw?’ I exclaimed. ‘You know what, I don’t care. Have you spoken to her?’
‘I have and I found her in bed with my real dad.’
I let my jaw drop for a moment. ‘Okay, that sentence is far too much for me to dissect right now. As long as you talked to her. Text me if you need anything.’
House hated how things had gone with his parents. He admitted to marrying Dominka and going to prison, but his mom had also admitted to marrying a little after his dads funeral. It was messed up and he was glad Anna was kept out of it, she didn’t need all the crap piling up around her.
He went to see her at the end of the week and talked a little about what happened, she just laughed and shook her head, but she didn’t say anything. House didn’t risk staying the night, he went home and slept on his couch while his wife slept in the bedroom. He wished it was Anna, but he knew he wouldn’t be a good husband to her.
‘I have a question.’ Park popped up just outside my office, startling me slightly.
‘Dr Park.’ I said, not quite sure what was going on. I pulled my sleeves down and tried to take a few steady breaths. ‘What can I do for you this morning?’
I led her over to the nurses station.
‘We’re treating a soldier who was arrested for treason.’
‘Yeah, I heard about him.’ I sighed.
‘I just wanted to know if you had any advice on how to talk to him, he’s not taking treatment because he thinks it’s the right thing to do. I don’t know how to make him see that he’s wrong.’
‘And you probably won’t.’ I said, heading towards the lift. ‘Look, soldiers are disciplined, they don’t just turn that on and off, you have to talk to him in a language he understands. Use all the authority you can muster, tell him if he dies how will the truth ever really get out?’
‘Is that what you told them when you were a soldier?’
‘I was never a soldier.’ I said quickly. ‘I was and have always been a doctor.’
Park stepped into the lift with me and the rest of House’s team, including the man himself.
‘They all think I’m sick.’ House said as the lift doors closed.
‘Are they only just getting that now?’ I said, sarcastically. ‘I heard you’re treating a soldier.’
‘Trying to.’ House glanced around the lift and I frowned curiously. ‘You wanna make out?’
I rolled my eyes, sighing again. ‘Maybe later, you can congratulate me on my one week.’
‘One week?’
‘Well, last time you asked, it was four months.’
The atmosphere of the whole lift changed, I got out on a different floor, but no one missed the fact that House was speechless. It was a slip, the whole marriage and meeting his mother had gotten to me a little more than I anticipated and then one of my patients killed themselves. It was a hard week and I needed to take the edge off.
‘Did you know?’ House demanded entering into Wilson’s office.
Wilson caught up quickly. ‘She had a slip.’
‘Why?’
‘I don’t know, might be something to do with the love of her life marrying someone else, but what do I know?’
House just looked at him and left the office. He went straight up to her office to talk to her.
‘I’m sorry.’ He said, she peered up at him over her glasses.
‘What are you sorry for?’ She asked.
‘For not being there when you needed someone.’ He was careful about how he said it. ‘If there’s anything I can do to help now… I’d like to.’
She took a moment to clear her throat, dropping her pen and glasses. ‘I don’t know what I’m supposed to say. I slipped, I had a bad week, taking the edge off seemed easier than actually dealing with it.’
House nodded, fiddling with his cane a little. ‘What happened?’
‘It was just a bad week, House.’ She shook her head. ‘One of my patients killed himself, thought it was easier than going through treatment. He was right, his treatment plan sucked, but his wife is pregnant and with the amount of distress she’s in, she will probably have a miscarriage.’ Anna took a breath and looked out the window. ‘It was just a bad week.’
House nodded. ‘Sounds like more than just a bad week.’ He leaned forward on his knees. ‘Your miscarriages… we never talked about them properly. We never talked about how you felt… when you lost the baby.’
‘We don’t need to.’ She said. ‘We don’t need to talk about anything.’
House suddenly saw something that was off. She had shallow breathing. ‘Have you taken a pregnancy test recently?’
‘No.’ She sighed, finally looking at him. ‘Do you think I should?’
‘Yeah.’ He breathed. ‘You had two miscarriages, there might be something else going on and if there is, you’ll have a third. I can’t watch you go through that again.’
‘You only watched me go through it once.’
‘I woke up to find you bleeding heavily and crying in the bathroom. You didn’t even know you were pregnant.’ House tried to be gentle. ‘I’ll take the blood, run the test for you.’ He watched a couple of tears fall, hitting her cheeks lightly.
‘What if I am pregnant? What do we do then?’
House hadn’t actually thought about that part of it, what if she was pregnant? He couldn’t look after a kid. ‘We’ll figure it out.’ He said, nodding.
House took a blood sample and ran it to the labs under a false name. He’d find out by the end of the day.

beloved by toni morrison (black horror, gothic horror, historical fiction)
what’s it about?: sethe, a runaway slave woman living in exile from her community, deals with grief, trauma and loss alongside her daughter, denver, and her mysterious house guest, beloved. that is all i can say without spoiling the whole thing!
why i love it; it’s about the grief, it’s about violence and blood as a form of love, it’s about paul d looking at sethe’s back and seeing the beauty in her horrible scars, and it’s about sethe accepting that she’s her own best thing
trigger warnings: rape, violence, slavery, anti-blackness
pride & prejudice by jane austen ( classics, romance )
what’s it about; a man of means must be in want of a wife ... mr. bingley is rich and mrs. bennet wants HER daughter to marry him, but like, so does everyone else, but mr. bingley has this annoying, stuck up friend, mr. darcy, and elizabeth bennet (lizzie, as everyone knows her) does NOT like him, but yes she does. also, there’s a lot of social prejudices, like someone with only two servants is poor and weird and uncouth, and someone with a manor is the best, EVEN if he’s been known to disgrace fair ladies 😳 and it’s all complex and interesting to read
why i recommend it; it’s thee original romantic comedy, and while i get annoyed when people water down these classic plots to ‘blah blah blah short thing’, that’s literally the best way to describe it. and yes, there are tender moments, yes, there are hand-clench moments, but there’s also a lot of interesting moments that go into the social politics of the time!
sir gawain & the green knight, as translated by Burton Raffel (classics, poetry, epic fiction)
what’s it about; so imagine you’re having a christmas party, and some weird guy says ‘hey! cut off my head!’ so you do it, and then he stands back up and goes, ‘cool! in a year’s time, i’ll return the favor’, and now you have to go on an epic quest that tests your honor and chivalry and religion. also this guy is green.
why i recommend it; a) because dev patel movie, and b) it’s such an incredible piece of fiction. i read the burton raffel version, but i’ve been eyeing the j.r.r. tolkien version ... you just have to choose which one’s right for you, or! read all the versions until you settle on a favorite!
watership down by richard adams
what’s it about; the rabbits have a complex society. but, more in depth, fiver (the runt of den) sees a human-made sign and has a vision of the rabbit warren being destroyed but ALSO a vision of this promised land...watership down ... there’s power struggles, there’s two (2) rabbit cults, and so many moments that made me want to lay face down in the grass
why i recommend it; fiver is cassandra, a doomed and cursed prophet, and hazel is the chosen one with too much weight on his shoulders...there are so many moments of shock and brutality that are balanced by goodness, by love and friendship and kinship ... the rabbits befriend a bird ... prince with a thousand enemies, when they catch you, they’ll kill you...but first they must catch you
housekeeping by marilyanne robinson (domestic fiction)
what’s it about; after their mother commits suicide, two sisters go to live in a mountain town with their grandmother. when their grandmother passes, their aunt (a drifter) comes to take care of them. it’s about the family relationships, it’s about sibling bonds, it’s questioning what does it mean to be a mother? what does it mean to be a social outcast?
why i recommend it; a young lesbian grows super attached to her lesbian drifter aunt...i don’t know what else you want me to say, it’s so incredibly touching
red dragon by thomas harris
what’s it about; retired fbi profiler will graham is pulled back into the dark world of criminal investigation, and must work with hannibal lecter to catch francis dolerhyde, “the tooth fairy”
why i recommend it; it’s nothing like that show, so like ... dash that out of your head. it’s superior to the show, it surpasses the show. if you want gay shit, you will get gay shit, but the real power of this story is like, the depravity. it’s about will breaking inside because he has to bring his wife and step-child into this world, it’s about will having the potential for great violence and doing nothing with it, it’s about hannibal lecter being a full-on bitch 24/7 and coaxing/teasing that cruelty out of people for FUNSIES, it’s amazing, it’s delicious.
trigger warnings: extreme violence, mentions of cannibalism
no more descriptions underneath the cut for now! i’ll come back to this post when I have the energy! or, you can ask me specifically about the books i’ve recommended.

Ever since the graduation, life was being really hard on Bucky.
He had been looking for a job and a place for himself for the last five months because he needed money and just couldn’t live with his parents: The house was too crowded, and they were too curious. It hadn’t been easy so far; Bucky had to dodge his mother’s ‘why are you still single’ questions all the while running from one job interview to another as well as meeting with a real estate agent for affordable apartments. He knew he couldn’t rent one until he got a job, but he wanted to cross it off his list.
Sighing, Bucky plopped on one of the first empty benches he saw.
The weather was hot as hell, and he was sweating like a pig in his suit. He could feel the shirt sticking to his back slowly. He was thirsty and hungry and tired; all he wanted to do was to go home, take a cold shower, eat something and sleep, but he couldn’t. He still had two interviews to get over.
“Fuck my life,” he whispered under his breath. Digging through the small bag he carried with him everywhere, he pulled out a bottle of water. It was half-empty, but it was better than nothing. He quickly drained it, wiped the slight sweat beading on his forehead and stood. If he stalled a bit longer, he was going to be late for his interview.
Just as he started walking, he felt his phone vibrate. Pulling it out, Bucky saw two messages from the interviewers. They were cancelled due to scheduling problems.
“Shit,” he hissed. He was both happy and sad; happy because he was going home instead of dragging himself all around New York, and sad because he was more likely to never hear for them again since those kinds of messages usually meant ‘we found someone already’. Cursing under his breath again, he changed his route. He had some money left, so he decided to get a sandwich from Subway. He really didn’t want to pass out on his way home, he couldn’t deal with that.
He was halfway to the nearest Subway when his phone vibrated again. It was a text from Sam.
we’re at lolly’s, it said. join us. been a while since i saw your ugly face. Bucky snorted as he shook his head. Lolly’s wasn’t so far away from where he was, probably as close as the Subway. He sent Sam a ‘on my way’ text and started walking.
Sam was right. It had been a while since he saw them. He was too busy chasing down job interviews that he couldn’t spare some time to his friends and night outs as much as he would like to. They were probably in the same rush since they didn’t reach out to him, and that was okay. Life was hard and messy and could get super busy super quick.
He sprinted as soon as he saw the diner. Using his long legs to run across the street, he walked inside panting lightly.
The place was buzzing. It wasn’t overly crowded, but it wasn’t empty either. There were families and students and friend groups all talking and eating at the same time. Laughter and chatting sounds were filling the small diner, and it was making the place look and sound all cozy.
His eyes danced on the people sitting in the booths until he found them. They were in their usual booth. Grinning, he made his way towards them.
“Oh, look it’s Barnes!” Sam grinned at Bucky. “Nice to see that you’re as ugly as before.” Bucky chuckled and hugged him.
“Shut up, Wilson, we both know you have a crush on me,” he said, making everyone on the table laugh. Bucky quickly hugged and greeted his other friends before he took a seat. “What are we having?” He asked, he was starving and was pretty sure that if he went without food a little bit longer, his stomach was going to go apeshit on him.
“We ordered greasy burgers as always,” Steve said, grinning. “Loki hates it.” Bucky saw Loki rolling his eyes, but he knew Loki was having fun. He smiled. “We ordered for you, too. It should be here any minute now.”
“Y’all are saints,” Bucky breathed in relief. The refusals and complaints immediately filled the small table, and Bucky laughed. He really missed his friends.
It was hours later when they left the diner with full bellies and laughter ringing in their ears. They ate and drunk and talked about what they have been doing since the graduation, how the life was treating them and all that jazz.
Bucky felt good when he heard that his friends, too, were going through the same things as he was. It felt nice to know that he wasn’t alone.
“I’m getting married,” Sam said as they stepped on the half-full sidewalk. All of them stopped suddenly, looking at each other with surprised etched on their faces.
“Are you kiddin’ me?” Bucky asked. “You’re─ Really?” Sam nodded, grinning widely. “Holy shit, man, I didn’t even know you were datin’ with someone.” The others chuckled.
“I didn’t either,” Loki said. Bucky heard Steve agreeing with him.
“Well, we kept it pretty low-key,” Sam explained. “We’ve been dating for three years? Almost?” He shrugged. “It got serious in the last year. I proposed to her already and we’re gonna tell our parents as soon as I hear back from one of the interviews I gave around.”
Bucky smiled. “Wow,” he said. “I’m proud of you man,” he added quickly because he was. He really was proud of Sam. “Congrats.” Bucky threw his arms around him and patted his back a couple times. Sam smiled and murmured his thanks. As he stepped back and let the others hug Sam, Bucky couldn’t help but imagine if this would happen to him if he were to treat you like you deserved.
Would you marry him? Would you mind keeping him forever? He wanted to know. He felt like he knew the answer already, but he wanted to hear it from you. He wanted to know if he ever stood a chance, if you’d ever accept him like that. He was too much of an asshole, he knew, thank you very much, but Bucky also knew that he’d get his shit together for you. Maybe he wouldn’t in the beginning of your… relationship, but he would now. It was too late, though.
“We planned a summer wedding, but it really depends on the time that I’ll be hearing back from anyone,” Sam sighed. “’s gonna be alright,” he said. “We both know that.” Bucky smiled sadly. He wished he could say that, too.
“I’m happy for you, Wilson,” he said instead. Sam sent him a soft smile. Placing his hand on Sam’s shoulder, Bucky pulled him against his side. “Let’s go home.” The others all agreed, and they started walk down the sidewalk.
They were crossing the street when Bucky saw you.
You were across the street where he was going with your own friend group. You were laughing and looked so beautiful in that white dress, Bucky wanted to sob. He missed your face, missed seeing you laugh, he realized, and his heart gave a painful thud in its cage.
Clearing his throat, he crossed the street when the light turned green for them. His eyes never left you; they watched how you joked and laughed and grabbed your friend’s arm while you giggled… Bucky missed you so fucking much.
“Barnes?” Sam nudged him when they stepped off the road. “You alright?” Bucky nodded absently.
“Yeah,” he murmured. The need to be near you, the want to talk to you was about to consume Bucky, and he was aware that he was going to make an ass of himself, but he didn’t care. “Hey, why don’t guys go ahead? I’ll catch up.” Sam frowned. “It’s fine. I saw someone and wanted to tell them something, that’s it.” It wasn’t so convincing, Bucky knew, but thankfully, Sam didn’t say anything. He just nodded and walked the opposite way.
Taking a deep breath, Bucky marched on where you were standing with your friends. He wasn’t about to jump into the conversation, that would be rude. He was going to see if he would be able to catch your attention. As he stepped into your sight, he waved his hand. You were too into the conversation, you didn’t see him at first, but then a movement caught your eyes. Lifting your head, you saw Bucky and froze for a second.
“Um,” you cleared your throat. “Can you give me a minute?” You said to your friends, and they nodded, going back to their conversation right away. You went up to him.
“Hi,” he said, a little breathless because you looked so beautiful. You smiled softly.
“Hi,” you breathed. “What are you doing here?” You couldn’t help but ask. He shrugged. Grabbing his bag tighter, he licked his lips.
“Was hanging out with the boys,” he said. You nodded slowly. “Then, I saw you and thought I could, y’know,” Bucky shrugged awkwardly. You nodded again. “You look beautiful,” he blurted.
You felt heat rushing to your cheeks. “Thank you, Bucky,” you murmured. Bucky’s heart made a flip as the oxygen got trapped in his throat.
You could have been together, Bucky thought. You could have been dating still, and this encounter wouldn’t be so awkward. Bucky wouldn’t feel like there were miles between you two while you were one of those people who knew him really well.
“Bucky?” You reached out and touched his arm. “Are you okay?”
“You told me you loved me,” Bucky blurted out. He couldn’t keep it in anymore. He wanted it out, out, out. He needed to get rid of it. He needed to tell you.
“ What?” You frowned.
“The night you got drunk and called me,” he explained. “You told me that you loved me, but you didn’t want to love me because it hurts you.” Bucky swallowed harshly. “You said you didn’t want to see me anymore because I just make you want to cry.” Sighing, Bucky tried to hold his tears back. “You─ You said that I never saw you as─ as a relationship material because you knew you weren’t enough.”
“Bucky─” You gasped.
“Please,” he begged. “Let me finish it. I─” Bucky took a deep breath. “I want you to know that you were enough,” he said, finally lifting his head up and looking at your eyes. They were full of tears already. “You were enough for me. You were more than enough. I was the one who wasn’t enough and didn’t deserve you. It─ It hurt like hell when I heard you say that you don’t want to love me anymore because it hurts you. I wanted to hurt myself for you because you didn’t deserve to be hurt.” He sniffed, trying to hold back tears was getting harder.
“Y/N,” Bucky said. “I want you to know that I love you. For real. This is no joke, there is no play, nothing. I just want you know that I love you so much. I told my friends about how I feel about you, and they didn’t believe. I don’t mind them not believing me, but I need you to believe me.” You felt tears rolling down on your cheeks gently as Bucky’s blue eyes bored into yours. The way he was looking at you felt like he was looking directly into your soul. You sobbed lightly.
“I treated you like shit,” Bucky murmured. “I know that. I’m so sorry. I made you feel like you weren’t enough when you were more than enough, and I hurt you. Because of me, you didn’t want to love, doesn’t matter who. You didn’t want to love, Y/N, because I was such a dick to you. I’m so sorry. I know no matter how many times I apologize, it’s not gonna undo all the damage, but I’m sorry. I truly am.” Bucky sighed deeply. “I should have told you that I love you long before. I shouldn’t have been such a coward about how I feel about you, I’m sorry for not acting on them before─”
With a sniff, you hugged him out of a sudden. Bucky backed a step and caught you immediately. Wrapping his arms around your waist, he hesitated only for a second before he pulled you in for a tight hug. You sobbed, face hidden in his neck as you held onto him. You missed him. You missed his body heat against yours, hearing his voice, feeling his arms around you… You missed him so much.
“Bucky,” you whispered when you pulled back just a little. You kissed him. Both of you had tears on your faces, but neither of you cared about it. Your tears-covered lips found each other. It wasn’t a filthy, passionate kiss, but a sweet, desperate and chaste one. You parted for oxygen and then leaned in to kiss him again. Pulling back, you rested your forehead against his, your eyes closed and lips close to his. “Bucky,” you whispered again, your hands were on each side of his face. “You knew how we were going to end up,” you murmured. You opened your eyes to look at his baby blue ones. “This is where we end.”
This was the first time you were seeing him this vulnerable, you thought as you watched his chin wobbled and tears spilling over his cheeks. He sniffed. He was nodding slowly.
He understood. He really did. He wasn’t good enough for you, he knew that, and he’d hate it if you were to settle down with someone who never truly deserved you. He loved you. You were his very first love, and everything was intense and strange to him, but he would get over it. He knew he had to. He just wanted you to be okay, wanted you to not hurt anymore, wanted you to love someone who was going to make you want to love.
So, he understood.
Nodding still, Bucky wrapped you up into another hug. He memorized how your body felt against his while hugging like this, how you held him, how you rested your head on his shoulder… He memorized all of it. With a sniff, he stepped back. He placed his hands on your cheeks and kissed one last time. He breathed in your sweet scent, felt your soft lips against his and pulled back.
“This is where we end,” he whispered, repeating your words. You nodded. “Okay,” he agreed. He kissed your forehead before he stepped back fully. “Take care of yourself, please?” He pleaded. “I want you to be happy, to love, just… Be happy, alright?” You nodded once.
“I promise,” you whispered back. “Only if you be gentle with yourself.” Bucky cracked a half-smile and nodded.
“I promise.” You smiled at him. Your hand reached to his hair, and you fixed the rebel strands. Bucky took your hand, placed a soft kiss into your palm and dropped it. “Goodbye, Y/N. Thank you for loving me.”
You felt fresh tears licking your face, but you didn’t care. “Goodbye, Bucky. Thank you for loving me back.” Bucky pressed his lips together, looked at your for a second longer and turned around.
Walking away from you had never felt this painful before, Bucky realized. His feet were taking him away from you, but his heart was beating with you. It was screaming at him to go back and beg you to try once, but he wasn’t going to do that. You didn’t deserve that.
Bucky sighed. Nothing was going to make him feel as real as you did, he thought to himself. He was okay with it. He had to be okay with it.
So, Bucky walked away from you.
Once and for all.
After that, after you, Bucky never loved anyone ever. His heart belonged only to you.

takes you to dinner at your favourite place and not Ichiraku's for once, and this poor man, his cheeks are beet red and he's stumbling over his words the whole time. and he keeps fiddling with something in his pocket?? finally, he works up the nerve and gets out of his seat to kneel in front of you, and for the first time all the night he doesn't stutter, "(y/n), I love you so much, and I wanna spend the rest of my life with you. will you marry me?"
huge summer wedding! he invites the whole village because he's so proud to be officially become your husband and he wants everyone who helped him get to this point see it. his eyes well up and his face breaks out into the biggest grin when he sees you walk down the aisle, you're the most beautiful thing he's ever seen

Sakura
she's been head over heels for years, so she thinks why not? she's definitely not going to wait around any longer for you to do it, so she goes and buys the ring
she wanted it to be a perfect proposal, but as shinobi things don't always work out as planned amirite? you guys get called off on a mission and after coming so close to losing you she decides she needs to do it now. so while you're both sitting there panting, covered in dirt and blood, and she looks over and pulls out the small box weakly. "I wanna spend my life with you (y/n), no matter how long we might have. marry me?"
after the tumultuous proposal you two plan the wedding perfectly. it's a romantic spring affair with everyone who cares about you present. when you see each other for the first time tears well in both your eyes, you can't believe this is really happening! the reception goes long into the night, you two holding onto one another dancing the whole time

Sasuke
he wasn't expecting to want to marry you as much as he does, but soon he considers it he can't stop imagining you walking down the aisle towards him and he knows he's got to ask or risk going crazy
agonizes over every detail of the proposal. he ends up writing you a love letter, and at the end he asks you to meet him at the place you met for the first time. you arrive and he's already down on his knee, surrounded by candles. "(y/n), you're the love of my life. would you give me the honour of marrying you?"
private and elegant winter wedding. the snow falls around you as you say your vows and he keeps your hands warm in his. he's not usually one to be romantic in public but this is an exception, his vows brings tears to your eyes with their sincerity
your song: yes to heaven by lana del rey
Kiba
he can't wait to ask you to marry him, he's known since day one that you were the one for him. he's so excited to do it he basically drags you to the spot he spent the whole day picking out, it's in a clearing in the woods and you're surrounded by flowers
he's looking at you with that adorable goofy grin you love so much but you have no idea what he's up to until he kneels in front of you. "omg Kiba... are you?" "shh, (y/n) I planned out a speech." and he tells you how much you mean to him and how he wants to spend every single day with you, will you please marry him?
he lets you do most of the planning, he just wants it to be perfect for you. all he asks is that the reception is a huge party. so it happens on a perfect summer day, and when he see's you walking towards him he can't believe his eyes, he's lucky enough to marry the most beautiful woman in the world. he won't cry, but prepare for a wolf whistle or something of the sort
your song: jackie and wilson by hozier
Hinata
she's wants to marry you so badly, but she's too shy to ask herself so you start noticing her drop little hints like "oh did you hear so-and-so are getting married? that's so lovely" and you notice a page open on her computer browsing engagement rings?
and honestly you've been waiting for a sign like this for months so you pick out the ring right away, and plan to take her for a romantic dinner. afterwards while you're walking home together under the stars you get down on one knee, and she doesn't even let you finish the question before she's wrapping you in her arms, "yes! yes! yes!"
it's an elegant winter wedding, puffy snowflakes falling slowly outside as you you exchange your vows in front of your loved ones. she walks down the aisle towards you and your heart almost stops, she's absolutely glowing. your first dance feels like there's no one else in the room
your song: if my heart was a house by owl city
Shino
omg he's such a sweetheart about it, he asks Hinata for all the advice he can get because he wants it to be perfect. but no matter how much he plans it out in his head he's still nervous
he takes you for a romantic picnic out in the woods so you too can be alone, he knows he'll chicken out if anyone else is around. but as the afternoon goes on he remembers why he loves you so much, you make him feel so at ease and confident in himself. so he turns to you and pulls out the ring, so sure about what he's about to do "will you marry me, (y/n)?"
the wedding is a pretty small traditional affair, but all your friends and family are there to watch you two take this step into the next chapter of your lives together. he's glad he has his glasses on because he does shed a tear when he sees you for the first time, he can't help it

Can we just talk about Carlos in TFATWS for a second because I love him so much, I loved his interactions with Sam in episode 1, the "when are you gonna let me borrow the wings" was so cute, and him helping with the boat and taking a photo with Sam in the last episode. And the "I'll have Carlos feed you to the fish" I imagine Carlos has been around long enough to see Sam bring home Riley, Steve and now Bucky. I just feel like we should have some headcannons about Carlos too in Sam's life growing up.
Yes! I love this! Mr. Carlos looks like my Uncle Trevor, so I loved him right away.
For me, I felt like there was some subtext that Sam and his daddy didn't really see eye-to-eye on a few things. Just from Sam and Sarah's conversations where they butted heads.
Maybe Sam and Mr. Wilson weren't as close as some fathers and sons are. I get the feeling Sam's daddy was strict on him. Sam was probably expected to carry their family's legacy with their business, but Sam had other ideas.
Maybe Sam went to Mr. Carlos for advice on things. To ask him about what the big wide world was like outside of Louisiana. Maybe they would sit and talk for hours, sipping iced tea and watching the clouds float by.
Maybe Mr. Carlos had a nephew around Sam's age who would visit in the summertime. Maybe Sam and his nephew spent some time together. Maybe the boy was Sam's first kiss. Maybe Mr. Carlos caught the two boys holding hands and Sam freaked out.
"Please don't tell my Daddy," Sam might have begged.
"I won't," Mr. Carlos might've replied, kindly, giving him an encouraging smile.
When Sam came back with Riley, maybe they both would help do odd jobs around Mr. Carlos' home.
"He likes you," Mr. Carlos might've said to Sam when Riley was out of earshot.
Feeling his face grow warm, Sam might've shaken his head and replied, "Nah, we're just friends. I don't think that's what he wants. Plus, he could never stay here. Always got his head in the clouds."
"Well, what do you want?"
Sam might smile plaintively and say, "I want him to be happy."
When Sam's face was all over the news with Steve Rogers while on the run, and people in town were talking about him, maybe Mr. Carlos spoke up for Sam.
"I know Sam Wilson," he might've said sternly, sitting at the barbershop. "That boy doesn't have a selfish bone in his body. If he's doin' this, it's because he's helpin' someone."
When Bucky came to help Sam, Mr. Carlos might've watched the two with a smile on his face.
"This one likes you," he may have said to Sam in a quiet moment. "You gon' tell me you're just friends? I see how he looks at you."
Sam might swallow down the last of his beer and ask, "How does he look at me?"
"I don't know," Mr. Carlos might reply. "Like you're home for him."
Maybe, after Sam and Bucky started dating officially, Mr. Carlos might have said to Bucky, "You look after him. You see Sam Wilson, he's special."
"Yes, Sir," Bucky might've replied. "Don't I know it."
Maybe one night, Bucky might've shown up at Mr. Carlos' house looking nervous and shaky.
"What's wrong?" Mr. Carlos might ask. "Are the Wilsons okay?"
"Yeah."
"Is Sam alright?"
"Yeah," Bucky might answer, wiping a sweaty palm against his jeans. "He's perfect. Which is why I'm - why I, ah, came around here."
Maybe Mr. Carlos would watch as Bucky reached into his pocket and retrieved a shiny silver ring, turning it over in his shaky hand.
"I wanna ask Sammy to marry me," Bucky might say. "And I know his old man ain't here, but I know how close the two of you are, so I wanted to ask for your blessing."
Maybe on Sam and Bucky's wedding day, Mr. Carlos would stand beside Sam up on the dais. Maybe he would give a speech at the reception telling Sam how proud of him his mama and daddy would have been. Maybe Mr. Carlos would get teary eyed and tell Sam that he is proud of him, too.

Hey my request is about Alex who returns to Seatle and finds out about Jo and Jackson's relationship
i had all and then most of you (some and now none of you)
wc: 1.4k
pairing: Jo Wilson/Alex Karev (past), Meredith Grey & Alex Karev (gen), and mentions of Jo Wilson/Jackson Avery.
summary: during a late night phone call, alex learns that jo is well and truly no longer his.
rating: general audiences.
category: angst.
warnings: angst, no happy ending.
AN: again, this is pretty short, but i wrote it in two hours, so.... it's not quite what you asked for anon, but i tried to keep it relatively canon compliant, since here (as you can tell) Meredith didn't get covid.
_____
The silence in the house seemed alarming to him, not used to the lack of commotion that usually echoed throughout the halls. Izzie was finishing up on a shift and wouldn’t be home for a while, and the twins were tucked into bed, leaving the only sound in the home to be the low, steady humming of a sitcom rerun on the TV.
The appeal drained after a while, and he eventually grew tired of laughter from the audience after nearly every line spoken. Mindless chatter was all it was and all it seemed to be.
Alex sighed, leaning into the couch’s cushions and pulling out his phone, dialing Meredith’s number once he saw that he had missed her call only minutes before. He waits a few seconds, the droning of the beeps making him anxious for a reason he couldn’t place. Eventually, Meredith picks up, her voice slightly out of breath, which he only assumes could come from finishing a long day of work.
“Alex! How are you?”
He gets up from his place on the couch, taking his conversation onto the front porch, settling onto the swing that hung in the corner. “I’m good Mer, I’m good,” he says, directing his gaze to the end of the road, where a car went by, headlights being one of the only forms of light besides the dim street lamps.
“How are the kids?” he asks, feeling a sense of nostalgia at the fact that he hadn’t seen his niece or nephews in months. He missed them, more than he would admit. He had been there for everything, everything graduation, every dance, every school play, he had been there.
But he had his own kids to tend to now, and he wouldn’t trade that for anything.
(not trade, but make some changes. he lost that opportunity a long time ago though)
“They’re good. Zola is driving Bailey crazy with how much she’s correcting his homework, when all he wants to do is go play on his XBox. Ellis is hating distance learning, complaining that all she wants to do is see her friends, but what else is new. Zola loves it, not surprisingly. She thinks school is even easier than it was before, the only part she misses is talking to her friends, but she calls them and everything, so she doesn't see too much harm. She’s started staying after class to help other kids with her teachers. Amelia and I have been teasing her non-stop about being a kiss-up, but she loves it. If she decides to switch careers I wouldn't doubt that she would be a teacher,” she says, and he can hear the car door slam shut and the rumble of the car's engine coming to life.
He laughs softly, “We both know that that’s not gonna happen. Zo would rather get into a bear fight before giving up on being a surgeon.”
Meredith hums, “That’s true. The thought of being anything else almost is offensive to her,” she laughs. “The other day I made an offhand comment about a lawyer being a fun career for her because of how much she loves to argue, and she went into a five minute lecture on why she was going to be a neurosurgeon.”
Alex smiles, practically able to see the image of Zola telling her mom off for suggesting she be anything other than a surgeon. “That sounds about right. I learned that lesson a long time ago.”
There are a couple of beats of silence, the only thing he can hear is the crickets chirping in the distance and the faint sounds of cars racing around in the background.
“They miss you, you know,” Meredith finally speaks, her tone dropping slightly to let him know how sincere her words were.
He lets out a heavy breath, “I miss them too Mer,” the crickets continue their noise, and images of what his life used to be seem to filter through his mind. An endless loop, dancing in his head of a life he once used to live, but could no longer say he knew.
“Well,” she breaks him away from his thoughts, “When all this is over, you’re due for a visit, okay?”
He nods, even though she can’t see him. “Long overdue,” he agrees. “So, what’s been going on over at Seattle Grace Mercy Death?”
She fills him in on the latest events of the hospital, how everyone was adjusting to their new realities, the newest batch of interns, and patients that had stuck out more than others.
It was a funny thing that he didn’t realize until a while ago, somehow patients at Grey-Sloan had stuck with him more than the ones where he currently was.
“And Jo—” she starts, but cuts herself off, piquing his interest. Jo hadn’t come up in any other of their conversations, for reasons that didn’t really need to be said aloud.
He bites the inside of his cheek, releasing and giving himself the courage to finally ask about her. She never left his mind, so he couldn’t see the harm in asking about her —an opportunity to clear the part of his brain that was on a constant track of her if he was able to know how she was.
“It’s fine Mer, you can talk about her,” he says, running a hand through his hair.
He can hear her sigh, and can practically imagine the head shake she is giving him right then “Not about this, Alex.”
He perks up immediately, “Is she okay? I need you to tell me if she’s not okay Mer,” he demanded, his voice firm, only a trace of worry present if anyone were to listen closely.
(he felt like Elsa, conceal don’t feel)
“What? No,” she scoffs. “Jo’s fine, though I don’t really think you have the right to care about how she is anymore Alex, considering you’re the one that left her,” she scolds him, and he can hear the disappointment in her voice, no matter how hard she tried to hide it.
He lets out a heavy breath, trying to fight back the urge to explain himself to her, which would end up in a loud argument of why he shouldn’t have done what he had. He’d had it before, and each time it sent him to bed with all the what if’s playing out in the forefront of his mind.
Except he didn’t live a life of what if’s, he was living a life of right now.
“I know Mer,” he can hear the heaviness in his words, and she must too, since she relents her lecture on him, and he knows that it’ll just come up at another time.
“She’s sleeping with Jackson,” she says it so casually that he almost thinks that she’s joking, but realizes that she’s not when she stays silent.
“...Oh.”
“Yeah.”
He can feel the tenseness of the air, even though they are thousands of miles apart. He clears his throat after a few minutes have passed. “Are they together, or…?” he trails off, unsure of how he’s supposed to feel.
He left her. He left her. He left her. He wants to say that he’s upset that she’s already moved on, but there he was, sleeping in the same bed as his ex-wife and raising their children together, all while they were still married. He couldn’t really have an opinion, because he was the one who ended their relationship in the most cowardly way possible, through a letter sent in the mail, not even giving her the courtesy to tell her the truth to her face.
“No, they’re doing a friends with benefits sort of thing.”
He nods, trying to think of something to say. “Is she happy?” he settles on.
“Not like she once was, but I think she’s getting back there.”
The ache in his heart grows a bit more, because some selfish part of him wants her to only be able to be happy with him, as unfair and cruel as it is. But he smiles bitterly, and the larger part of him is happy for her, happy that she is finally able to have someone make her laugh and smile again.
The sight of headlights coming up the driveway breaks him away from his own mind, and he knows this conversation will have to be finished at another time.
“You did this to yourself Alex,” she says, as if she knows exactly what he’s thinking.
“I know.”
They both hang up, and he greets Izzie with a smile and a kiss on the cheek, wishing that the woman he was curled up on the couch with was someone else.
But it wasn’t, because he made his choice, and now he had to face the reality of a life he chose to live.

Unfinished: April 12, 1945
Tumblr media
As March 1945 drew to a close, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was exhausted. At the beginning of February, Roosevelt had attended the Yalta Conference with Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin -- a meeting which required the American President to undertake a physically punishing and extraordinarily dangerous trip halfway around the world to the Crimean Peninsula in the middle of a raging world war. At Yalta, Roosevelt’s appearance had shocked the foreign leaders and their aides. In his last face-to-face meeting with Churchill, on February 18, 1945, FDR was seen as a dead man walking. Churchill’s personal doctor, Lord Moran, told a friend that Roosevelt had “only a few months to live”.
Being President of the United States for just one term is taxing enough on a young man or a healthy man. Franklin Delano Roosevelt had been President for twelve years. He had campaigned for the Presidency and been victorious in four national elections. His Administration faced one of the greatest domestic crises in American History -- the Great Depression -- and the greatest crisis and bloodiest conflict in world history -- World War II. FDR had attacked these problems (and other issues that arose during his terms) with energy, creativity, and a relentless pursuit of victory.
A healthy and athletic man who stood nearly 6′2″ and weighed about 200 lbs. as Assistant Secretary of the Navy under Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt had been stricken by polio in 1921. The disease robbed him of his ability to walk and, at the time, looked as if it had robbed him of a political future. He rebounded politically but physically he was never the same. Confined to a wheelchair, the muscles in his legs withered like the branches of a tree in winter. Although he could not walk under his own power, FDR taught himself to stand while wearing heavy steel braces around his shins. He needed the assistance of a muscular partner -- sometimes one of his sons, sometimes a military aide -- in order to feign the appearance of walking. Through sheer will, however, Roosevelt learned to take a few steps without anyone’s help -- a handy skill that he would show off at important campaign rallies. But as he began his unprecedented fourth term in the White House in the early months of 1945, FDR no longer had the energy to show off.
Roosevelt was as gravely ill as Lord Moran suggested. The successful 1944 Presidential campaign had severely drained his already tapped-out reservoirs of energy and stamina. His fourth inauguration was low-key, partly because it took place in the midst of war and partly due to the President’s failing health. Instead of the traditional inaugural ceremonies at the U.S. Capitol, Roosevelt took the Oath of Office at the White House and gave his brief fourth Inaugural Address from a balcony at the Executive Mansion. The famously verbose Roosevelt gave the second-shortest Inaugural Address in American History. By the time the crowd realized that he was talking he had already finished. Only George Washington’s four-sentence-long second Inaugural Address in 1793 was shorter than the address given by FDR on January 20, 1945.
FDR now looked entirely different than the man who had told the nation that “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself” in 1933. Dark circles surrounded his eyes, which seemed sunken into his skull. Since his first Inauguration, Roosevelt had lost 40-50 pounds. His hands shook so violently at times that some observers wondered how he was able to eat. He smoked constantly, but rarely finished his cigarettes. Most shocking of all, FDR no longer went to great lengths to conceal his disability. Frail and tired, he found it almost impossible to wear the heavy braces that he long wore on his crippled legs. On March 1, 1945, Roosevelt addressed a joint session of Congress on the results of his Yalta Conference with Churchill and Stalin. In an unprecedented move, the President sat in a chair on the floor of the House of Representatives and apologized to Congress, beginning his speech by saying, “I hope that you will pardon me for this unusual posture of sitting down during the presentation of what I want to say, but I know that you will realize it makes it a lot easier for me not to have to carry about ten pounds of steel around on the bottom of my legs.” It was the first time that President Roosevelt had ever publicly acknowledged his physical disability.
Twelve years of the Presidency, economic depression and war had strained Roosevelt’s health, but the 14,000-mile trip to the Yalta Conference on the Black Sea had pushed FDR to the limit. On March 30, 1945, Roosevelt arrived in Warm Springs, Georgia for a few weeks of relaxation and, hopefully, recuperation. Roosevelt loved Warm Springs. He had started visiting the small town in western Georgia in the 1920s, hoping that the warm waters from the natural mineral springs nearby would help him regain the use of his legs. When he was Governor of New York, FDR purchased a small house that he used when he visited Warm Springs. As President, the home was called the “Little White House” and although FDR only visited it sixteen times during his Presidency, many of those trips were for 2-3 weeks each. When his train pulled into Warm Springs at about 1:30 PM on March 30, 1945, many longtime residents said that things seemed different. Roosevelt looked terrible and while he waved to onlookers, it was with noticeable weakness.
The first few days in Georgia were tough. FDR was obviously ill and seemed to struggle making it through a church service on Easter Sunday. Roosevelt also avoided his beloved Warm Springs pools. Instead, the President rested, caught up on sleep, and visited with guests. The goal was for FDR to regain enough of his health to make a trip to San Francisco for the charter meeting of what would become the United Nations. At the Little White House with Roosevelt were some personal aides, military attaches, and cousins Daisy Suckley and Polly Delano. During his first week at Warm Springs, Roosevelt did very little work, dictating a few letters and reading briefings, stronger and more animated in the mornings and evenings but completely drained in the afternoon. Another goal for Roosevelt was to gain weight -- by the time he left Warm Springs, he hoped to be up to 170 lbs.
Still, there was no noticeable improvement in FDR’s health or spirits. Then, on April 9th, Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd arrived. As President Wilson’s Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Franklin D. Roosevelt had become involved in a passionate love affair with his wife’s social secretary, Lucy Mercer. It was 1918 when Eleanor Roosevelt discovered the affair between Franklin and Lucy and threatened to divorce him unless he promised never to see or speak to Lucy again. FDR agreed to the ultimatum -- an ultimatum that was strengthened by his mother’s threat to cut off his inheritance if he and Eleanor were divorced, as well as the fact that Franklin’s budding political career would be crushed if the affair was revealed. The relationship between FDR and Eleanor was never again passionate or loving after the discovery of the affair, but Eleanor kept her word and remained married to Franklin. Franklin, however, didn’t keep his word to Eleanor.
The Franklin-Lucy affair probably resumed shortly after Roosevelt’s first Inauguration in 1933.  By that time, FDR and Eleanor had more of a professional relationship than a personal one. He respected the First Lady’s political viewpoints, supported her activism, used her as a sounding board, and tried to act on many of her suggestions. Personally, however, there was no passion or tenderness or intimacy between the First Couple. It was FDR and Eleanor’s daughter, Anna, who helped rekindle Franklin’s relationship with Lucy. She arranged for Lucy to visit the President in the White House when Eleanor was out of town. And on April 9, 1945, Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd was in Warm Springs, Georgia visiting President Roosevelt due to Anna Roosevelt’s invitation.
FDR was so excited to see Lucy that he didn’t wait for Lucy to make the drive all the way from Aiken, South Carolina to Warm Springs. The President and his cousin Daisy decided to meet Lucy’s car en route. At Manchester, Georgia, 85 miles away from Warm Springs, the highway rendezvous took place. FDR looked happier than he had in months as Lucy got into FDR’s car along with her friend, painter Elizabeth Shoumatoff. Lucy had brought Shoumatoff along to paint a portrait of the President -- a portrait that she hoped would be an improvement on the recent photographs that had made Roosevelt look “ghastly”.
For the next two days, Roosevelt and Lucy enjoyed their time together, going on small drives, eating happy meals, and sitting together while Shoumatoff prepared to paint the President’s portrait, studying photographs and making preliminary drawings. Daisy Suckley had the opportunity to observe the unique relationship between FDR and Lucy Mercer and also had some private conversations with the President’s longtime mistress. In her diary, Daisy recorded her thoughts about the two after she accompanied them on an automobile drive that they took: “Lucy is so sweet with F(ranklin) -- No wonder he loves to have her around -- Toward the end of the drive, it began to be chilly and she put her sweater over his knees -- I can imagine just how she took care of her husband -- She would think of little things which make so much difference to a semi-invalid, or even a person who is just tired, like F(ranklin).”
On April 12th, President Roosevelt woke up and ate a light breakfast. He had a slight chill despite the warm, humid weather that day and wore his cape draped over his shoulders throughout the early afternoon. Roosevelt did a little bit of work, reading the Atlanta newspapers and dictating some correspondence. Elizabeth Shoumatoff had set up her easel in the living room where the President worked behind a card table that served as his makeshift desk. As Shoumatoff painted, FDR continued reading, and at about 1:00 PM, Roosevelt said, “We have got just about fifteen minutes more to work.”
In the quiet of the room, Daisy Suckley thought that the President had dropped his cigarette and was searching for it because his head slumped forward suddenly. Roosevelt could barely lift his head when Daisy asked what was wrong. He placed his left hand gently against the back of his head and, in a barely audible voice, told Daisy, “I have a terrific pain in the back of my head!”
Roosevelt quickly slipped into unconsciousness as the women in the room summoned help. They called for a doctor who was staying in a cottage close to the Little White House and they helped two of FDR’s valets carry the President into the bedroom. Roosevelt’s hands and feet were ice cold, but he was still breathing. Smelling salts were administered but FDR was unresponsive. As the doctor and aides tried to help the President, Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd and Elizabeth Shoumatoff recognized the hopelessness of the situation. They also recognized the potential scandal that was possible if it was learned that the President collapsed in the presence of his longtime mistress.
Shoumatoff packed up all of her paints and the unfinished portrait she had been working on. Lucy Mercer grabbed her belongings and took one last look at her beloved Franklin. He was still alive when they left, but he was breathing laboriously and his eyes no longer recognized Lucy. Lucy and Elizabeth Shoumatoff had been on the highway back to Aiken, South Carolina for an hour when President Franklin Delano Roosevelt died in Warm Springs at 3:35 PM. The official cause of death was a cerebral hemorrhage. FDR was 63 years old.
Eleanor Roosevelt was notified of her husband’s death a few minutes after 4:00 PM. She summoned Vice President Harry Truman to the White House while he was having a drink at the U.S. Capitol with House Speaker Sam Rayburn. Truman wasn’t told why he needed to hastily come to the White House, but he knew it sounded urgent. As Truman left the Capitol, he ran into a young Congressman who questioned the Vice President about his speedy exit -- a young Congressman named Lyndon Johnson.
At the White House at 5:30 PM, Eleanor Roosevelt broke the news to the Vice President simply a directly: “Harry, the President is dead.” Truman was stunned and asked what he could do for the widowed First Lady. Eleanor smiled sadly and asked, “Is there anything we can do for you? For you are the one in trouble now.” At 7:00 PM, Chief Justice Harlan Fiske Stone administered the Oath of Office to Truman as the 33rd President of the United States.
By that time, Eleanor was on her way to Warm Springs to claim her husband’s body. At about midnight, she arrived at the Little White House in Georgia where she asked about her husband’s last hours. It was then that she learned news almost as shocking as the President’s death. Eleanor found out that FDR had been with his former mistress Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd when he was stricken. She spent 45 minutes alone with his body, picked out the clothing for his burial, but never lost her composure despite the shocks that she experienced that day.
A funeral train returned FDR’s body to Washington, D.C. the next day. Roosevelt was embalmed by morticians who found that the President’s arteries were so hardened that they could barely inject the embalming fluid into his body. FDR’s body laid in state in the East Room of the White House almost 80 years to the day that Abraham Lincoln’s body rested in the very same place following his assassination. On the 80th anniversary of Lincoln’s death -- April 15, 1945 -- Franklin Delano Roosevelt was buried in the garden of his beloved estate Hyde Park on the Hudson River in New York. Upon his death, the New York Times wrote of the deceased President:
“Men will thank God on their knees a hundred years from now that Franklin D. Roosevelt was in the White House. It was his hand, more than that of any other single man, that built the great coalition of the United Nations. It was his leadership which inspired free men in every part of the world to fight with greater hope and courage. Gone is the fresh and spontaneous interest which this man took, as naturally as he breathed air, in the troubled and the hardships and the disappointments and the hopes of little men and humble people.”
Elizabeth Shoumatoff’s Unfinished Portrait of President Roosevelt -- which she was working on when he died -- now hangs in the Little White House in Warm Springs, Georgia.

The Detroit Police Department had yet to make any substantial progress on the murder that occurred at AlphaBio a few weeks back, before another murder case hit their desks.
Connor stepped past the holographic caution tape into the building where their crime scene was located, immediately noticing the smell of blood was heavy in the air. In response, he turned his scent receptors down from standard to low. A body was sprawled out on the floor, cheek pressed into the pool of blood puddled beneath them.
"Nolin Greene," Officer Wilson stated when he saw Connor walk in. "M.E. estimated dead less than six hours."
Connor nodded at him before scanning Greene's body with his optical unit. He was 52 years old, had never been married, and was previously employed at Cyberlife as one of their esteemed programmers.
Even without scanning the man's corpse, it was obvious he had died from multiple gunshot wounds. One prominent bullet hole left a gaping wound in the back of his head, likely just to ensure he was dead, considering he had a few on his torso in addition.
Hank rounded the corner with a sigh. "All the security cameras were offline. Haven't been since pre-rev," he explained, approaching Connor.
He waited until Officer Wilson stepped away to lean into Connor with his arms crossed. "What did they make here?" Hank asked quietly.
"They used to generate code for androids operating systems and protocols," Connor explained smoothly, matching Hank's hushed tone. "All android manufacturing has been put to a halt. He had no reason to be here."
"Good point," Hank said lowly. "Would they have kept anything here?"
"Considering the audits Cyberlife financers are going through, I would imagine this place was-... scrubbed clean, so to speak," Connor replied, briefly glancing around the office space. Judging by the dust pileup and the damage to one of the windows, this place had likely sat abandoned for months.
"You think it's related to AlphaBio?" Hank asked the android. "Chips were stolen from that plant. This facility creates code. That's a dangerous combination," he observed.
Connor gave Hank an agreeing look before eyeing the room again. Officers had brought in crime scene lights to cast out the darkness, and a flashlight was on the floor, labeled as evidence. It was next to Greene's body and had his fingerprints on it, powered off likely due to dead batteries. It didn't require any detective skills to see the power was cut off completely to the building.
"Greene was likely here to meet someone," Connor observed. "Who made the 911 call?"
Officer Wilson walked back in, careful not to step in any of the evidence. "An android apparently," he answered. "The call is saved in the case file."
"I'll pull it up now," Connor stated, using his HUD to pull up the case files remotely. "Would you like to listen, Hank?" he offered, eyes staring blindly ahead as his focus was elsewhere.
"Go for it," Hank said gruffly.
Connor's lips didn't move, but the sounds came from his mouth. Hank had seen him use his vocal processor like a speaker before; but, he never quite got used to it, and still found it very bizarre to see Connor look dead in the face while making noises that weren't his voice.
"911. What's your emergency?" the dispatcher asked.
Officer Wilson, who had never seen Connor do that before, stopped dead in his tracks and stared at the android in shock.
"My friend has been shot. I'm at-" a feminine voice followed. Seeing as she was an android, making the call with her internal processor, no outside noises could be heard, and there was no way to identify what made her suddenly stop talking.
The recorded 911 call continued in silence for a few more seconds before the android disconnected, giving dispatchers just enough time to locate the GPS coordinates from the call.
Connor stopped the recording and turned to Hank, his expressionless face returning to normal. He ignored Officer Wilson's concerned look.
"The android didn't block her GPS coordinates; so, she definitely wanted to be found," he explained to the lieutenant.
"She could have been the killer? Guy used to work at Cyberlife," Hank suggested thoughtfully. "Pissed off android?"
"Possibility," Connor acknowledged, nodding at the older detective. "However, she did identify him as her friend..."
The android trailed off, using his HUD to run a background check on Nolin Greene. "He belongs to no clubs, publicly, anyway, and has been unemployed since Cyberlife closed down. His former boss still has a primary residence in Detroit."
"Think he's worth a visit?" Hank offered more so than asked. "Let's go."
"I can drive," Connor offered, following the older detective as he headed for the exit.
"Fuck no," Hank immediately declared.
"Are you sure you can afford another speeding ticket?" the android challenged, some tease in his tone.
"I'm not gonna get another speeding ticket," Hank retorted fiercely, climbing into the driver's seat. He eyed Connor as the android shimmied into the passenger seat.
"Keep it up and your ass is walking," he threatened in a tone that Connor had grown rather accustomed to. It sounded sincere, but the android could tell the difference.
"Whatever you say, detective," Connor uttered, knowing full well his relaxed tone and stoic expression would irritate the older detective further.
Hank only grumbled in response.
...
...
...
Arthur Torres lived in a nice house in the posh, suburban side of town. He didn't seem at all surprised to find detectives at his door; however, he couldn't seem to bring himself to stop staring at Connor with blatant distrust and fear.
"You were a head programmer at Cyberlife for years," Hank stated, reciting information Connor had filled him in during their ride over. They had decided to let Hank lead with the likelihood that the man would be untrusting of Connor.
That seemed to be a very accurate assumption.
"Yes," Torres acknowledged Hank's statement.
"One of your former subordinates, Colin Greene, was murdered last night."
Torres was a skittish looking individual, and completely failed to maintain composure at the news. His hands were digging into his lap and he was struggling to keep still, fidgeting in his seat. Both the detectives doubted it was concern over Greene's livelihood, or lack of.
"Was it an android?" he asked, confirming their suspicions of his intentions.
Hank decided to ignore that question. "Greene's body was found at one of Cyberlife's office spaces, where programmers worked on their operating systems," the older detective explained. "We were hoping you could tell us why he would be there."
Connor decided to wear a cold look while he stood there, next to the couch where Hank had parked himself. The android was standing with perfect posture, arms crossed elegantly behind his back. It was clear that Torres was afraid of him. If he was being honest, he was taking advantage of that.
"Must have been the office where we worked," Torres offered quietly, trying to avoid Connor's piercing gaze. "I can't imagine why. The place was cleared out months ago. Did you ask Maria?"
Hank's brow lowered slightly. "Who?"
"Maria. She was a KL900 placed at our office. Nolin had reconfigured her so that she could test our codes. After the-" Torres' eyes flickered to Connor with uncertainty. "-revolution, he took her in - let her live with him."
Before Hank could utter another word, Torres continued, suddenly eager to run his mouth. "She had a lot of our incomplete code saved. I warned him it was dangerous to keep her."
The older detective looked down at his cellphone, that had vibrated quietly while Torres yapped. It was a text from Connor, reading, "the voice on the 911 call matches that model."
Hank tucked his phone back into his coat pocket. "What was their relationship like?"
"Well-" Torres began. "I suppose-... She was unique. He had modded her greatly - well beyond her manufactured purpose. I think he saw her as his own creation, in a way."
Again, before Hank could inquire further, Torres started up again. "She's missing, isn't she?"
Connor spoke up this time. "Are you suggesting she is somehow responsible?" His tone was calm, collected, almost polite, even; however, that was likely even more frightening than if he spoke with anger.
"I-" Torres stammered, eyes briefly flickering up to meet Connor's before immediately shifting back to the older detective. It was bizarre to think that this spineless man was once a lead programmer for Cyberlife.
"You can't think of any reason Greene would turn up dead in your old office?" Hank asked, maintaining the good cop persona he had taken up during this discussion.
"I can't think of why he would be there at all," Torres insisted.
"I would advise you offer something substantial," Connor warned, his tone cold and unyielding. "As of right now, you are our number one suspect."
"W-what?" Torres stammered, his panicked eyes falling on the android. "I haven't spoken to him since we were shut down. What motive could I possibly have?"
Connor's brown eyes remained unreadable, cold and robotic. That seemed to make Torres more uncomfortable than expressing valid emotion. "You said it yourself: he had access to incomplete code. Perhaps he knew something you didn't want getting out. So, you shut him up."
Torres' eyes landed on Hank, his gaze silently pleading, as if he expected Hank to stop Connor. Instead, the older detective wore a faint smirk. "He's got a point."
"No! I would never!" Torres defended himself loudly. "Y-you need to leave. I'm calling my lawyer."
...
...
...
"God, I love when those rich assholes lawyer up," Hank groaned as he climbed into his car. "It's like crying to mommy and daddy."
Connor slid into the passenger seat, a sour look on his face. "I pushed too hard. We probably could have gotten more out of him," he said apologetically.
"Nah," Hank retorted gruffly, silencing Connor's regrets. "We got the only useful thing out of him."
Hank pulled out of the street with a little more force than was necessary, mainly because he wanted to cause a fuss in the posh neighborhood. He could see the neighbors poking their heads out, rich and bored with nothing better to do than gossip. Hank's vintage car screamed detective or organized crime, and no in between.
"Let's check Greene's place. Maybe you can find something to help you locate this android," Hank suggested.
Greene's neighborhood wasn't as posh as Torres'; but, it was still nice, a little noisier with families out and about enjoying the weather. The warrant request had already been received and an electronic key had been sent over to Connor. He used the interface on his hand to let them inside.
The detectives walked around carefully, taking turns examining rooms for clues. The place was nicely furnished and impeccably clean. An android definitely lived here. If there was anything Connor could stereotype androids for, it was cleanliness.
There were a few photos hung up on the wall in the living room. The KL900 in the photos was likely Maria. She was an ordinary looking KL900, everything factory issued. Most of the photos were likely her at the Cyberlife programming facility.
There was one photo of just her and Nolin Greene together. She was wearing civilian clothes and her LED was removed. Their smiles suggested the relationship was a good one.
One of the bedrooms could easily be identified as Maria's room. There was no bed, but a desk with a charging station and a computer with an android interfacing tool in place of a mouse and keyboard. A quick scan of the room showed almost no fingerprints, except for a few on the door handle and door frame, which Connor immediately scanned as Nolin Greene's.
Hank was looking over a study that was likely Nolin's. The dark, stained wood desk was enough of a giveaway without all the golf memorabilia decorating the wall behind it. There was a laptop plugged into the charger. He figured CSI would pick it up later.
"Still waiting on that warrant for phone records!?" Hank called out.
Connor called back, "affirmative!"
"Damn," he grumbled to himself. "What's the holdup?"
The two detectives rendezvoused in the kitchen, exchanging disgruntled looks.
"No signs of a struggle," Hank observed.
"It wasn't a robbery. There aren't any fingerprints in the house not belonging to Greene," Connor explained. "The perpetrator left Greene's wallet and keys on his body... It's almost as if Greene was just... in the way."
The android looked away for a moment, staring off blindly as he searched Greene's employee folder again from Cyberlife's records. There was nothing in there about Maria, unsurprisingly. There were thousands of KL900's in circulation; so, there was no point in searching registered android records.
"Ya' thinking Greene wasn't the target?" Hank suggested.
"Assuming Torres wasn't giving us the runaround," Connor added on, setting a pondering gaze on the lieutenant, "Maria could have been the target; but... who would know that an ordinary looking KL900 has Cyberlife codes?"
"Someone who used to work for Cyberlife," Hank answered.
"It leads us back to Torres," Connor said sourly.
"He wasn't the only one that got bit in the ass," the older detective corrected him. "Lot's'a people out'a work. Lot's'a people facing lawsuits... and lot's'a people losing money. Oldest reason in the book."
"We need those phone records," Connor stated fiercely.
"I'm gonna call CSI. Get them on these damn computers," Hank stated, pulling out his cell phone.
"I could-"
"No."
...
...
...
After a long day of field work, Hank, Officer Wilson, Officer Miller, and Detective Collins gathered around a food truck a few blocks from the police station. It was already dark out and the street lights were illuminating the cityscape.
Connor decided to join them.
"You wouldn't fucking believe-" Officer Miller explained, an excited look in his eyes. "I thought this son of a bitch was gonna clock me. Connor came jumping over the roadblock and slam-dunked that motherfucker to the ground like this was WWE."
Detective Collins nearly chocked on his drink, doubling over with laughter. Hank was grinning, having witnessed that, and plenty of other amazing feats from the android, firsthand.
Officer Wilson nudged the android's shoulder. "Damn. Where the fuck were you when that crackhead tried to hit me with a baseball bat?" he teased, shoulders trembling with laughter and a wild, bright smile on his face.
Connor looked bashful, a crooked smile forming on his face.
"That's how you fucked up your hand," Hank added on.
"Small price to pay," Connor replied sincerely.
"Wait - was that how you met your lady friend? That nurse?" Officer Wilson asked, eyeing Connor suspiciously. He shifted his eyes to Miller with a grin. "Maybe I should save your dumbass next time and land me a hot nurse."
"You just need to get hurt," Miller replied with a grin, popping his knuckles dramatically. "I can help."
"I'd like to see you try," Wilson retorted. "You get knocked out by little old grandmas."
"That was Lewis," Detective Collins corrected. "But, it was pretty fucking funny."
"She put up quite a fight," Hank jumped in. "Earned that 'resisting arrest' with honors."
The conversation continued for a while, the men talking in-between eating their meals. Connor was mostly quiet, observing, occasionally jumping in when the moment seemed right. He worked with these guys almost every day and had grown to know them well; still, he found himself struggling to adjust to this - to fitting in.
When it was nearing eight o'clock, the android decided to dismiss himself.
"I'm gonna call it a night," he proclaimed, removing his elbows from the table. He had taken to using more common phrases around his coworkers, and this in particular was one of his favorites.
"Already? You don't sleep," Miller protested casually.
"He needs to get home so he can rearrange his girlfriend's guts," Wilson teased.
Miller and Collins broke out in laughter and Hank rolled his eyes, despite his faint smirk.
Connor stood there staring at them blankly, sincerely confused for a moment. Surely, that sort of thing would kill you. At the very least, it would cause severe damage that would require a surgeon. Why would he want to do such a thing?
A quick internet search, however, showed him that it was slang for rough sex.
He couldn't quite tell, but Connor was certain a faint blush had appeared on his cheeks. He spent 1.61 seconds internally debating if he should deny it or tease back.
At one point in the past, he might have taken this behavior as negative; however, he had grown to recognize banter as common between humans. The impersonality of it was how bonds were formed. Besides, he could easily recognize their teasing was unharmful. If anything, they were treating him like just another human, and that was more preferable.
"Maybe," he said lowly, the corner of his lip curling up slightly.
Connor's eyes reflected a mischievous glance at them briefly before he retreated. As he walked away, he heard the officers hollering obnoxiously at him, an echoing "ooohhh" as if he had declared something profound.
Before he was out of earshot, he could hear Hank grumpily, albeit fondly, telling them to "shut the fuck up".

Hear me out: headcannons about Bobby growing old with mc🥺 (I needed some fluff T-T)
no no no no no, you can’t just come in here and do this to me!! that’s so wholesome! i think i’m gonna have to divide this in decade marks, and maybe stop at the 30 year mark? i can do a part II later. 🤔
‘10 year mark’
the ‘mckenzie’ brand has expanded to restaurants, bars and bakeries all over the uk
the bars are considered a hot spots in the big cities. pictures of young ‘paisley cuddle’ are scattered on the walls, along with the pics from the villa’s parties, to set the theme
the restaurants have bobby and his experiences with famous chefs, like jake ‘sweetcheeks’ wilson, mary berry, gordon ramsey, wolfgang puck.
the bakeries however have the pictures from the time bobby went on the bake off show and won.
there’s small town models of the bakeries/restaurants that are seen as ‘family diners’
you and bobby already have two kids, 4 years apart from each other. in my head bobby is the type to have them earlier so they can live their best life together, have fun in the kitchen or in the backyard playing ball.
he loves throwing birthday parties every year, and of course, baking the cake. to which year is a different theme. “babe, you take care of the decorations and the details i’m definitely gonna forget, and me?” he puffs his chest holding a whisk. “i’m the cake guy.”
bobby is the reason why the kids love the parties so much. he’s the type of parent that goes on the slider with the kids, jumps with them in the bounce house, starts the water balloon wars…
the parents are so thankful for him since he’s pretty much the one who keeps an eye on them at all times.
usually, he’s waking up early every day because it became a habit since his hospital times. he never really shook that habit. so he prepared breakfast, takes the dog out, while you wake the kids up to eat and rush them to school
the dad that takes two different cameras and a phone to film and take pictures during his kids’ public presentations, games, recitals and science fairs “dad, one phone is enough” “yeah, but your dad needs backup! i’m from the 90′s darling. i can’t be any different” he says, shrugging with a grin.
you guys have a small house on the outskirts of glasgow or london, depending on who won the bet you had when you got married.
you’re pregnant again. entirely unplanned and now bobby can’t stop crying,. he always wanted three kids.
‘15 year mark’
a third child came three years ago, which made you consider a much more peaceful place to buy a house. and a bigger one for that matter.
bigger bakyeard means more people and their kids playing around the lawn, as bobby and gary grill sausages, making stupid jokes about it, and you and the girls have drinks shaking your heads.
you and bobby are gary’s kids’ godparents
ibrahim can’t come, he’s to busy making mad money on brand deals. noah is calming the kids down, by reading something in the living room, while bobby shakes a cocktail for the tired parents.
gary gives you a new couple of puppies, because the dog you had has unfortunately passed away. (sorry!)
your first kid is just turning 13 and being a little pain in the ass. but they like their uncles and aunties so they will actually raise their heads from *inser new device that will replace phones*
you guys travel in your car, to spend a week in cabins, fishing, playing ball, having picnics close to the lake
bobby always throws at least one of the kids in the water, before jumping in and splashing everyone. “bet you can’t do better than that, babe…” he says to you, raising his brows suggestively. “watch me, mckenzie.”
summer time and the lake became a tradition since it was the first place you and him spent a holiday alone
the employees that attend to you in hotels refer to you as “the mckenzie’s”
in the city, you have a trustworthy babysitter that will spend the night so you and bobby can have some time alone
he surprises you with dates and flowers out of nowhere
early nights are made for you and bobby to help the kids with homework
at this point, bobby is invited to be a special guest in cooking/baking competitions in the uk
and to have a “masterclass” of hiw own, where he mostly credits you for the idea of expanding, the execution of the administrative plans and how to actually expand a business. “i only do the cooking. she’s the genius behind the money.” he laughs while crossing his legs during his online course.
‘20 year mark’
kids’ sad times. graduations are happening. the youngest is entering third grade, the other one is in uni, far from home. “did you have to choose something so far from your old man?” “dad… of course! how else would i have a ‘paisley cuddle’ phase?” they respond, laughing. “i should’ve never told you thats story! now you’re having ideas!” “relax dad. everything is gonna be fine!” the middle one is entering high school and their rebellious phase.
bobby follows through with his part of the deal when you got married, by wearing something ridiculous to embarrass your kid at their graduation. “dad, you look like a hawaiian drug dealer.” “ i know,” “oh, so it wasn’t dark when you got dressed? mom!” “what can i say, your dad doesn’t care for blacks and blues.” “yeah, right…”
professionaly, bobby has a renowned signature dish, plenty of new ideas for the future, like school and courses.
the house is the same you bought five years ago, but now, it’s mostly parents getting together for barbecues, cocktails, movies and game nights
the younger children stay in the tv room upstairs
‘25 year mark’
your second child didn’t go to uni, and decided to help out on the family business. they always felt like this was the life for them and couldn’t wait to finish school to start.
bobby wanted them to go to school to learn everything they could “but dad, you didn’t, and you know so much.” “oof, they got you there, babe.”
you have a second wedding ceremony and a second honeymoon
bobby has a few grey hairs popping through his dreads
he’s still wearing colorful shirts and girls on social media call him ‘daddy’
he’s been invited to cook for the queen (yes, she’s still alive)
you see your friends a few times more a year now.
your third child is going to uni, to follow a career path you never imagined they would, but you’re proud of them
you decided to sell the house, that’s so big now, and find a smaller one that still has an extra bedroom for when your oldest comes to stay with their partner
bobby cracks dad jokes now, and according to gary, he picked them up from him “sure, gary, ‘cause you’re the only man on the planet who tells dad jokes” “stop bickering! you’re like an old married couple.” you say, slapping their arms playfully
‘30 year mark’
your first child just had their first child
“you’re a grandpa, bobs!” gary slaps him on the back, picking up a box of cigars that they will share with noah and ibrahim.
“can’t believe i’m this old.” “if you’re old, what am i?” you ask him, folding your arms on your chest. “beautiful?” he responds with a clear guilty expression.
‘things that would happen at all times during this entire journey’
bobby would sing to the kids every night
you would read them bedtime stories, taking turns to do the voices
it’s a tradition to cook together on special occasions, no matter what happens. the three kids, you and bobby would always spend the day listening to music, talking about life, slicing, sauteeing, mixing, measuring. it’s a tradition that will never die
when your grandkids come around, they will be the the ones resposible for measuring
drawings that your kids do in school akways have extra colors on bobby’s outfits. his name also has more than three colored letters
bobby has taught your kids how to play the guitar
rainy afternoons were known as “dad’s baking afternoons”
you and bobby had a hard time to find a compromise between being friends and parents.
open conversations with your kids, about everything. they knew what to expect in the world.
bobby’s parents would visit, to spend a whole weekend and share stories of his childhood, as yours would too
family vacation always had a ‘car trip and singing along to the radio’ type of tradition as well
your oldest now takes their child for family vacation in the same spot you and bobby used to
twice a year you guys rent a place for the family to have some bonding, even after they get married (or not)
“your dad is the finest pillow fort architect in the uk”
camping in the backyard when you had to cancel a trip
you’re in charge of coaching and playing sports in the back of the house while bobby relaxes under the sunlight “i was never very athletic”. he’s the empire
*these are the ones on the top of my head. i must’ve left dozens behind :/

<- Prologue -=+=- Next Part ->
You found comfort in the fact that the ride to Brooken was three days. If you needed to flee from your future husband’s nation, you would be a three-day carriage ride away from your father’s kingdom. You were already a skilled rider. If you stole a fast-enough horse, you might be able to cut that journey in half. The huntsman, Thor, lived on the outskirts of York. If you were to find him in your escape, you were sure he’d lead you the rest of the way back to safety.
Then, you began to feel guilty.
If you were to flee from your marriage, you’d have to leave behind your ladies – your friends. Natasha and Wanda were noblewomen of your father’s court. Their lives’ purpose is to serve you. Their skills consisted of sewing, clothing you, taking care of you. They wouldn’t know how to ride a horse the way you did. If you were to flee with them, you were sure to be caught and punished by your husband. But if you were to leave them at the mercy of the ruthless King Steven, then you were sure your friends would be at the other end of a sword.
You pictured a sharpened blade hanging over innocent Wanda’s head as tears fell from her eyes. Would King Steven prefer to be the one standing over her or would he order an executioner? She’d whisper a prayer and beg for mercy. You hoped that the blow would be swift. A fast death for your kind friend. You imagined that King Steven would live up to the rumors of his cruelty. He’d parade her headless body along the corpses of his enemies. He’d send a rider to bring her head back to York, knowing that you’ll receive it – knowing that you’d grieve over your friend and come back to him to ensure Natasha’s life would be spared.
You shook the scenario out of your head. It did you no good to imagine such things. It just brought you more dread than you needed now.
There was nothing you can do to change your situation. Nothing but survive.
»»————- ⚜ ————-««
The driver informed you and the knights that rode at your carriage’s side that you were nearing Brooken. Ser Vision was instructed to ride ahead to inform the Brooken court that you would be arriving shortly.
You fumbled with the long-sleeved gown your mother asked you to wear. It was nearing spring and although the north was known for its long winters, the weather had become warmer than expected. You were flushed from the heat. Other ladies would be dawning on gowns for the spring while you had to cover the cuts the huntsman’s ropes left behind.
You peered outside the small window and winced when the daylight blinded you. You could see the castle. From your studies, you knew that Brooken’s castle – named Ameera, the ancestral home of House Rogers – was in the heart of its country.
You have never been outside of York, so you’ve never seen another king’s castle aside from your home – the Iron Tower. York was a relatively new kingdom. Whereas York had been established for almost 85 years, Brooken was the original jewel of the north – a kingdom that was centuries old and it was evident in the aging castle. But nevertheless, from what you see as you entered Brooken, it was breathtaking.
You quickly noticed how Brooken’s roads were smooth. Whether you were riding in the country lands where they grew their crops or into the villages where the townspeople met, the roads were perfectly even. They felt as if they were still new underneath the wheels of the carriage.
It wasn’t like how it was in York – the further you were from the main city and the closer you were to the rural lands, the roads became more broken and uneven. Your father would say it was the consequence of the wars with Brooken and that fixing the roads were one of his main priorities – he’d been saying that for the past three years.
As you rode through the villages, you saw the townspeople stop what they were doing to stare at you as the carriage drove by. They’d bow and call out to you as if they knew who you were – as if you were already their queen. You tried your best to smile and wave to the people, taking a mental note to come visit the villages with your ladies. Perhaps, you could read to the children in the library like how you read to Morgan and Harvey when he was younger.
You felt a pang of sorrow in your heart as you thought about your younger siblings. Harvey was nearing seventeen. He understood what was happening when you gave him one last hug. He didn’t cry though you could see that his eyes began to water. Morgan, being months old, just babbled. You held her close and kissed her forehead, fighting against your tears. You might never get to see your baby sister grow up.

When you arrived at the castle, you were surprised to see that instead of dead bodies hanging along the wall, there were flowers. It looked as if the whole castle was surrounded by various flowers. It must’ve been truly spring, then. A morbid thought crept into your mind. The dead make good fertilizer.
There were noblemen and women standing outside the castle, awaiting your arrival. They chattered excitedly, ready to get the first glimpse of their new queen. However, some were there to get a look at the next victim of Steven Rogers’s curse – or better yet, the next victim of Steven Rogers.
The carriage had come to a stop and its doors were opened. Ser Pietro extended his hand to you, but you didn’t take it. You gave him a wide-eyed stare as your anxiety began to rise. “Your highness,” he muttered, glancing down at his hand, and giving you a nod of encouragement, “please.”
Your hands were shaking when they clutched his. He escorted you out the carriage, but you felt as if your legs were wobbly. You weren’t sure if it was from the journey or your nerves, but you felt as if you couldn’t stand. The chattering had stopped as the people bowed and curtseyed to you.
“(Y/N)!” You heard a shriek of excitement. You turned to see Wanda and Natasha, who had arrived moments before you did. Wanda ran to you and engulfed you into a hug.
She was glad that you were safe. Both ladies were unsure if you would be arriving. How embarrassing it would be if they arrived without the king’s bride. They had left before Thor had brought you back. She quickly curtseyed to you as Natasha waltzed over and did the same. Wanda bid her brother a quick hello.
“You gave me a heart attack,” the red-haired woman frowned with her voice low. She gave you a tight hug. “It’s alright, (Y/N). We will all survive this together,” she whispered in your ear. Natasha was older than you by years. You grew up together. You saw her like an older sister. She was right more times than she was wrong. And you hoped she was right.
The doors of the castle were pushed open as two men started to walk down the pavement towards your party. One had dark skin while the other had dark shoulder-length hair. You weren’t quite sure who these men were, but you’ve seen King Steven’s portraits. Neither men were him.
“Princess (Y/N) Stark of York,” the dark skinned one bowed, “we hope the journey was well.”
You gave him a small nod and a forced smile. “Brooken is lovely.”
“I am Lord Samuel Wilson,” he nodded. “This is Lord James Barnes.” You bowed your head to both men out of respect. “It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance.”
“Likewise, Lord Wilson, Lord Barnes,” you tried to sound confident, but your nerves were wracked. You cursed your father for not sending you off himself, or at least he could’ve sent your mother with you. The introductions would go by much smoother. “I must ask where is the king? Will he not greet me himself?”
Lord Barnes chuckled. “Eager, are we?” He teased. You chewed on the inside of your cheek. I’m much more eager to stab myself fifty times, you wanted to remark but bit it back. It was not the time, nor the place. “It’s a Brooken tradition that the betrothed couple meet privately for the first time, your highness.”
“Wonderful,” you smiled. “Perhaps my ladies can attend to me beforehand? I’m afraid the traveled look is no way to make a first impression.”
“Of course,” Lord Barnes smiled. “Right this way.”
»»————- ⚜ ————-««
“Red or white? Decisions, decisions,” Wanda asked as she held up each dress.
“What the hell happened to your wrists!” Natasha gasped after stripping you. She grabbed your arms to examine the cuts. They were still fresh. One wrong move and the skin would tear again.
“It involved a rope and the huntsman,” you flinched when her thumb lightly grazed over it. “It’s a long story that ended with me being dragged back to my father and my bow being snapped.”
“Your father really did send Thor?” Natasha rolled her eyes. “What was your plan?”
“I was trying to make it to the ports. I was almost there – so close I could smell the sea. I meant to bribe a sailor on his way to Wakanda and seek refuge with King T’Challa.” You sighed in defeat. “From his part in the war between Brooken and York, I’m sure he wouldn’t agree with the union. Perhaps he can conceal me in one of his villages.” You were so sure your plan would’ve worked. You hadn’t expected your father to send one of the best huntsmen in history to find you.
“Well,” Wanda shrugged as she gave you a smile, “you’re here and you’re safe. Which is all that matters.”
You pulled your arms from Natasha’s hands and groaned. You sat on the bed of your new bedchamber – it was your temporary room until you were married. “Am I safe? I know you’ve both heard the rumors.”
“The man is not cursed,” Wanda dismissed, waving her hand.
“You should give it a try,” Natasha encouraged. She sat beside you, a deep blue dress in her hands. It was a sleeved one to cover the cuts. She wrapped her arm around your shoulder and hugged your side tightly. “Make the most of this union.”
“He’s handsome,” Wanda giggled. You gave her an unamused look. “What? You’ve seen the portraits. He’s gorgeous.”
“I’ve heard the rumors, too,” you said. “He got so tired of Queen Sharon’s constant defiance, so he killed her in her sleep. Suffocated her with her own pillow.”
“A rumor,” Natasha reminded. “You haven’t even met the man. How can you be so certain that he’s the devil?” You let out a long exhale. “And besides, if your father thought you were in any real danger, he wouldn’t have agreed to the marriage. Your father and King Steven were friends before the war after all.”
“You weren’t in the throne room when I spoke to him,” you shook your head and frowned. “He told me if I were to die at the king’s hands, then he’d just simply start another war.”
“Your father is snarky,” Wanda tried to comfort you.
“I think we better hurry up and not leave the king waiting,” you sighed. “I don’t want to test his patience already.”
»»————- ⚜ ————-««
Lord Barnes had been the one to escort you. “He’s in the gardens in the back of the castle,” he explained to you as you walked with your arms linked throughout the castle. “He’s eager to meet you.”
“So, I’ve been told.”
“I must warn you,” you felt your heart drop at those words. “He’s… he’s not himself.”
“What do you mean, my lord?” You frowned. Was one of the king’s closest friends about to confirm the rumors before you could even meet the man?
Lord Barnes looked to the ceiling, contemplating his words. He clicked his tongue. “Steve’s a bit… on edge. He’s overworked. The council puts a lot of pressure on the king. They want him to do their bidding as if he’s just their puppet.”
You nodded, not quite understanding. Your father’s councilmen worshipped the very ground he walked on. No one would ever dare slip out of place – well, except for that lord whose penis you insulted. How could a council pressure a king?
“He’s also quite angry. He received bad news this morning.”
“My lord,” you said, your voice dropping to a whisper. “There’s rumors in York, and I’m sure there are some in this very castle, that the king is cruel. So, forgive me for my question, but I must ask… will he be violent… towards me?”
Lord Barnes pursed his lips as he frowned. He knew the truth – you knew he knew the truth. You were hoping that if there were any sense of decency in this man that he would tell you. But, from what you’ve gathered, he was also the king’s oldest friend. So, it didn’t shock you when he vaguely replied, “don’t give him a reason to be.”
Your stopped in your tracks and tried to pry your arm away from his. But the man’s grip tightened. “Your highness, Steve’s overworked. He can get angry. Don’t push when he won’t budge and don’t enrage him further.” He pulled you along and you bit back the yelp when his grip on your arm made the sleeves of your dress press onto your wounds. “For your sake, I will keep this conversation to myself.”
Lord Barnes led you to an enclosed area outside the castle. No guards. No nobles. He let go of your arm before instructing you to walk towards the center of the garden. He bowed before he left.
It was the perfect opportunity to run. No one to stop you. No one to catch you. You would’ve, but the image of Wanda’s head being sent to you in a basket displayed in your mind. Your friends would be in danger if you fled.
So, you took a deep breath and with one foot in front of the other, you walked towards the center of the garden.
There was a fountain. There was a small statue of a little girl holding what appeared to be a flower over her head. The water came from the flower and emptied into a small stone bowl underneath the girl. The water from there emptied into another larger basin.
You smiled. It was beautiful. The sprinkling sounds it created were just as lovely, reminding you of the ocean. A man stood next to it, his back towards you. His hands were behind his back as he stared at the fountain, undoubtedly admiring it.
“Your grace,” you called out.
Startled, the man turned. The portraits did not do him justice. He was just as breathtaking as the garden and the fountain. His blonde hair had been grown out though not as long as Lord Barnes’s. He also had a full beard that embellished the strong jaw you knew he had underneath. And his eyes… They weren’t as cold as the paintings made them out to be, but they were just as dark, tired even.
“Your highness,” he responded. His voice was rough and deep. But in a way, it was melodic. A hypnotizing sound. You curtseyed to him but still kept your distance. You were wary of getting too close to the man. You were isolated with this stranger – with your future husband. He could get away with anything. And who would believe you if he did hurt you? Your ladies. Your parents, perhaps. But no one else in Brooken would believe you over their own king. “You are a sight.”
“Likewise,” you said truthfully. He was. Despite what you’ve heard, you could still admire art.
Steven studied you. Your body language revealed your unease. It was in the way your shoulders were tight and how your fingers picked at the fabric of your gown. He found your outfit particularly strange. Underneath the blazing hot spring sun, you were wearing a sleeved gown.
“A little hot to be wearing a winter dress,” he chided. His face didn’t move. It was still stony and expressionless.
“Modesty,” you snarked. He furrowed his brows and titled his head to the side in confusion. You coughed. “That’s a lovely fountain.”
“Indeed.”
“Where did you get it from?” You asked, unsure of what else to talk about. Perhaps if you got him talking about himself, you could make this bearable.
He offered you his hand and you stared at it for a beat before cautiously taking it. He brought you towards the fountain and your immediate thought was that he was going to drown you for taking so long to get ready.
“I made it,” he said and pointed to a carved initial – S. G. R. It was engraved at the bottom of the fountain, barely visible due to the moving water.
“You have a true talent, your grace.”
“Thank you.”
You cringed at the awkward exchanges. He seemed to be a man of few words, so you decided to lead the conversation. “My mother encourages my siblings and I to take on skills. She said in the unfortunate event that we are no longer royal; we’d still have a way to make income. My brother, Harvey, has taken an interest in wielding. He’s quite good at it.”
He nodded. “It’s good advice. Your mother’s always been good at advising.” You agreed with a nod. “What skill did you take on?”
“I’m quite the shot in archery, actually. It’s taken years of practice, but I like to think I’m skilled. My mother was very furious when she caught Ser Pietro teaching me. I was ten. I told her that I was learning – for my special skill. And she scolded me telling me, ‘I meant to sew not bow!’. She asked me what career I could get from being an archer and I told her I wanted be a hunter.” You laughed at the memory. However, the king didn’t. His brows were still knitted together as if he were deep in thought.
“You miss your family?” He asked.
“Of course. My mother just gave birth a few months ago to my little sister, Morgan. I can’t help but dread that she has the same fate as me.”
“Same fate?” His tone shifted. He was offended.
You paled when you realized what you had said. “I only mean – “
“It’s a privilege to be married to a king.”
“Not when it’s against your will,” you scoffed. You tried to pull your hand back, but his grip tightened.
“Any other girl would kill to be in your position,” he snapped.
“In that case, they can have it!” You frowned.
“You don’t want to be married to me, do you?”
“Is it obvious, your grace?” You retorted with an eye roll.
He narrowed his eyes at you. You were just like your father – snarky and headstrong. You tried to pry your hand from his grip, but he opted to grab your wrist instead. His grip was so tight, your fingers went numb. You yelped in pain and tried to yank it away, but the king was too strong.
“I’m afraid whatever you want no longer matters. Your father wants this union, so does my council. The north needs this marriage. Do you understand, little girl?” He seethed. You were sure you were going to die at that moment. The handsome artistic man who designed fountains was gone and, in his place, stood the monster the rumors warned you about.
You yanked your hand away so hard that thought you heard the skin rip open. You fell to the ground with a thud. The blood stained your sleeve and dripped down your hand. Confused, Steven stared at his own hand that gripped your wrist. Remnants of the red on his palm and fingers.
“(Y/N) – “he muttered. His frown lifted as he tried to reach towards you.
“Get away from me!” You screamed.
“Let me help you!”
“Lay a finger on me and I’ll shoot an arrow through your eye!” It was treason to threaten the king. You knew it was, but at that moment, you didn’t care.
“Let me help you.” He repeated. “I – I didn’t mean to hurt you… I didn’t know…”
Your hard expression on your face softened when you realized that his brows were scrunched up with worry. His mood had completely shifted. He kneeled before you and reached out carefully for your wrist. You hesitantly presented him the bloody arm. Steven pushed up your sleeve and winced at the wound.
You found that odd. A man known for being a ruthless beast on the battlefield winced at the sight of your severe rope burn. Surely, he’s seen far worse wounds. He tore the fabric of his sleeve with ease before gently wrapping the wound. It was a juxtaposition to the death grip he had on you moments ago.
“I’m sorry,” he finally said. His tone was softer now as if he were afraid his angry tone would cause further damage to your wrist. “I didn’t know you were wounded.”
“Would it have stopped you from grabbing me?” You asked, furrowing your brows at him.
He looked at you. His eyes were a pristine blue and if you stared hard enough, you were sure there were hints of green in them. His clenched his jaw but didn’t answer. That alone told you. “What happened?” He prompted instead.
“Tight knot. Huntsman. It’s a long story.” You deadpanned, but he found it comedic.
He chuckled softly. If you thought his voice was a tune, that laugh alone would be replaying in your head for days. “You are your father’s daughter.”
“That’s an insult, your grace,” you muttered.
He helped you up. You dusted off the dress. Natasha and Wanda would be eager to know why you came back to your room with dirt on your bottom and blood on your sleeve.
“This marriage will happen whether it’s something you want or not.” He told you. “But I do wish to make you happy. We will be bound together until death. I don’t want either of us to be miserable.”
“Your first impression was to grab my wrist and make me bleed. You have a lot to make up for.”
“Perhaps, you could show me your skill with the bow.” He offered.
“I’ll try not to shoot you in the eye, then.” It was a joke. A stupid attempt to lighten the mood and ease the tension. It was how you coped.
And it worked.
He cracked a smile.

The low sun cast an orange glow over Peter's angel face. He was just starting to tan and no less beautiful for it. He was beautiful and pale in the winter, sun-kissed and stunning in summer. The diamonds he had worn when Tony came to get him had been beautiful, but they weren't Tony's diamonds and so they lay now at the bottom of the Atlantic. So did Suarez's yacht. Tony was confident that if the gangster had known Peter's name, he would never have laid hands on him. Yet, he wished Peter had left the man alive so he could peel the skin from his hands. The sight of him with his eye burned out and half of his head missing was almost enough to soothe the possessive itch. Almost.
Tony took off his jacket and laid it over Peter's near bare body. It calmed the fire for now. He would buy him something later, some clothes or jewelry. At least he was covered in hickies, Tony's mark left on his skin. Tony saw them starting to purple across his neck. The sight of them had Tony's body forgetting its age. He shifted in his seat, letting his legs spread as his cock filled out. He should fuck him while he sleeps. Peter would love it. But no, he did have business to handle. The diamonds Suarez had stolen weren't just from any bank, but a bank that stored the belongings of one Wilson Fisk. The diamonds had belonged to his late wife Vanessa.
Vanessa Fisk was probably the only person that her husband ever loved and he loved her dangerously, desperately. Much in the way that Tony loved Peter. It was something that they had come to understand about each other.
It hadn't been easy to convince the families not to punish Peter for killing Octavius. In the end, they understood that Otto had kidnapped Tony and that Peter was only doing his duty as a Stark and as a husband. Not that they were married at the time. He had wanted to lie. To convince them that he was the one who killed Octavius, but he knew that sooner or later the truth would come out and it would only mean greater trouble.
He watched Peter sleep, laid out across the seat. He was genuinely and undeniably the most beautiful person he had ever seen. How lucky he was to have his love, his loyalty, his respect. He would do anything for him.
If he had to burn down the entire city to keep Peter safe, he would. Hell, he would burn down the whole city if Peter asked him nice enough.
It was absolutely terrifying, but he would burn it all, sacrifice any and all of his men all for Peter. Not because he was beautiful, but because he was loyal to the death and he meant it genuinely. He didn't follow Tony out of fear or because of a debt. His love and loyalty were pure and unshakable.
Peter had been offered money, fame, fancy condos. He laughed at it all. What he wanted was Tony. Sure, Peter enjoyed the power, he enjoyed the money. Tony did doubt sometimes that Peter would love him without those things, but for now, the only money or power he wanted was Tony's and that was enough to keep him.
Tony smiled to himself. He remembered before, back when Peter was just a pretty doll on stage, never knowing who was funding his performances, who was sending him such nice gifts. He remembered what a fool he was to think that Peter was someone who should be bought and tricked. Like a stay cat being led to a trap with a can of tuna. He felt cold when he imagined how it could have been. How he could have led Peter to despise him and their relationship by turning it into an obligation. Peter never had a choice in being his, but Tony's choice to show Peter respect made all the difference. Sometimes he pondered what Peter had said when he proposed.
I think you would do anything for me. Even if it meant letting me go.
To this day, Tony wasn't certain if he was right. In his bones he felt sure that he would go to any lengths to keep Peter by his side. Anything at all short of killing him was on the table. At least, Tony believed that Peter would never try to leave him and so he tried not to think about something so painful. At the end of the day, he understood that Peter meant it symbolically. What he meant to say was that he wanted to be Tony's husband. That he didn't feel coerced or obligated. He was smart. He knew what Tony needed to hear. Even if it was a lie. Even if Tony thought that he might just kill them both if Peter tried to walk away.
In a few days, Tony would leave Peter behind at their beach front home to meet with the other family bosses. He needed to make sure there was enough security at the house. No one was allowed in or out when Tony went to a family meeting. Not even Peter. Sometimes he pouted about it, but Peter was undeniably excited by Tony's possessive nature, keeping him locked away like a precious princess in a story. This time though, Tony would be gone a whole weekend. No risks would be taken, no pouting indulged. The time they would be apart would have Tony too on edge. Maybe moving in together was a mistake. It only led him to cling harder to Peter's side.
He sent a text to the man in charge of Peter's security, just to make sure everything was in place. They had spent days vetting candidates to join Peter's security team. They had to be both loyal and clean. Clean in the sense of drugs, but also clean in the sense of debts. If they owed so much as a penny to anyone other than Tony Stark himself, they were off the table. No one with outside loyalties or motivations would be allowed near his little devil. That was what he should call him, the bloodthirsty little thing.
He had another performance coming up soon. Tony had talked to the director of the performance hall and had the opening night moved back a week. The original opening had been the same weekend he was to meet with the families. Everything and everyone was in place. Now he just had to survive leaving his heart behind for two days.
He watched him sleep, his heart. He watched him as the boat sailed along through the water. Peter didn't stir until the boat was docked. Just in case they had been seen, they were borrowing a dock several miles from home. A car waited by the road to pick them up.
Tony stood, casting a shadow over Peter's face. He smiled, opening his eyes in the dimmed light.
"Hello, sailor," he teased.
Tony bent and scooped him up. "Little siren."
Peter laughed. "I suppose I lured at least one man to his death."
Tony hugged him to his chest. He was so light, so thin and delicate. His arms wrapped around his neck. "And did it occur to you at any point, that you might have left Suarez or his men alive?"
Peter blinked. It was endearing, watching the young man realize what he had done. He hadn't thought for a second that he might simply leave them drugged and stranded, tied up. He could have asked Tony for something to slip into their drinks. He could have got Suarez alone and knocked him out. He could have played the game with his charm and some clever words. Instead, Tony had found two bodies floating down the current as they made for his coordinates. Another had been hanged from the side of the ship. No one could say Peter wasn't an effective and terrifying killer. Tony loved it. Because he knew that Peter wasn't cold, wasn't without empathy. The truth was that Tony said 'Get me those diamonds' and Peter's mind became focused on his task and he completed it by whatever means felt easiest, fastest.
If Tony said jump, Peter wouldn't ask how high. He would jump, immediately and without question. Whatever happened next, it would bring him joy to know that he done what Tony had asked. He wasn't the type to waste time.
"Should I have? Left Suarez alive I mean..." He was blushing, shame creeping into his voice.
Tony carried him from the boat, still held snug in his arms. "No, my angel. You did exactly what I wanted you to do. Alive or dead, it doesn't matter to me. If it did, then I would have been more specific."
"Really?"
"Of course, sweetheart. Daddy doesn't lie to you."
Peter smiled. Then he said one of those things... the things were dark and forbidden and made Tony's blood rush south.
"I set him up to die." He whispered in Tony's ear. "I let him think he could have me and when he thought he was going to get what he wanted, I burned his eye out and shot him in the face. Because I know who I belong to."
Tony's jaw clenched. His grip on Peter's body went tight. He stepped off the dock and set Peter on his feet, slamming his back into the wall of the boat house. Peter's eyes glinted with fear or excitement, he wasn't sure. He wasn't thinking either. He just crushed their mouths together, pressing Peter back until he whimpered in pain. His hands grabbed his hips and pulled him up, moaning when their groins pressed together. They could spend a good long time against this boat house, but Tony wouldn't push the graciousness of its owners further. Still he kissed his boy breathless before leading him along up the hill.
Peter pressed into his side, walking like he was drunk. Tony wrapped an around him, made sure his jacket was snug around his shoulders.
The door was opened for them as they reached the car. A guard slid in first then Tony. He helped Peter in and tucked him into his side. Peter gave him a quick kiss before he settled in against him. Tony smiled to himself as the car carried them away.

Willie exhales, watching his breath crystallize into tiny ice particles. He extends a hand to catch them, but that action causes the little cloud to dissipate.
He rolls his eyes. Who has their wedding in Canada, in winter? Plus, not just on any day, but on Valentine’s Day.
He fancies that he might as well be the main character of a Shakespearean tragedy. Watching your boyfriend get married is painful enough, but to a girl? That shit makes you feel as if your heart has a screw lodged in it. He feels as if he has the weight of the world on his shoulders.
Willie likes to say that he hates Alex (i.e., the said boyfriend, the love, the light, the star of his life) – but that sentence leaves behind a bitter taste in his mouth, like he’s just had that weird cough syrup that his mother buys.
Alex’s friends can definitely see through his act, like, right now.
“Willie, relax! Everything’s gonna be alright!” Julie Molina, Alex’s bandmate, ‘unbiological sister’, and ‘best gossip partner’ exclaims. She is crouching beside him.
“Julie, I’m not the type of guy to crash a wedding and sabotage it, especially one hosted by those…” His hand moves in circular motions, pointing to the direction of the church, where Alex’s parents are probably seated.
Luke Patterson, Julie’s boyfriend and Alex’s ex-boyfriend, and current best friend and bandmate pipes in. “Homophobic, racist mingers?”
Willie grins. “Don’t know what that means but sounds accurate!”
“You know, we are saving Alex’s life, right? Literally?” Bobby Wilson chimes in, Alex’s other best friend from his position behind them. They are currently hiding behind a table laden with sweets of all kinds, and it makes Reggie, the last of Alex’s best friend-cum-bandmates’ mouth water.
“I still can’t believe that his parents are forcing him to marry a girl!” Julie exclaims, ponytail bobbing as she speaks. Luke adds, “Not just any girl, but Carrie fucking Wilson.”
“My fucking cousin!” Bobby says, looking behind to check if anyone’s there. There is, but they’re all either part of the caterer’s group, or the waiters – they are currently outside a church, where the reception will be held, post wedding. The attendees, the families, everyone – are inside the church, for the wedding.
“Hey, is Grandma Ruth really that sick?” Reggie finally asks, his eyes diverting from the sweets. Luke smiles sweetly at him. “I’m glad you finally decided to join us, Reginald.”
Reggie fails to catch the sarcasm in his tone, and he smiles brightly. Luke rolls his eyes, but a faint smile teases the corners of his lips. “Yeah, she really has stage four cancer.”
  Julie says, “Poor Ruth.”
Luke huffs, “I don’t care that she’s dying – she shouldn’t fucking blackmail her grandson like that! Alex, honey, I’m dying. My dying wish, you ask? Marry someone. No, not your boyfriend of four years! Marry a girl, dummy. Homosexuality is a sin!”
Bobby adds, “Not just any girl, but your best friend’s cousin! Whose probably into Flynn, but, yeah, whatever.”
Julie smiles brightly at the mention of her best friend. “Oh, she definitely is.”
Reggie’s brows quirk. “I thought she was still into Nick.”
Bobby shakes his head. “They broke up last summer.”
Willie clears his throat, finally gaining some confidence. “He shouldn’t be marrying the wrong girl.” He exhales, and adds, as an afterthought, “Or any girl.”
“You two should be walking down the aisle, Willie.” Julie says, resting a hand on his shoulder. He nods, grateful for her support.
He remembers this morning, when he was at the grocery store, buying as many buckets of chocolate ice cream as he could fit in his arms. Suddenly, he had felt a warm hand wrap around the back of his throat, and he let out a yelp, dropping all the buckets.
He remembers thinking that the universe was against him. First, it’s the day of his boyfriend’s wedding, and along with that, someone’s here to kill him. Well, he thought, it’s better to die than –
“Willie!” A familiar voice exclaimed, and of course, it’s Julie – he realized that the hand that he thought was here to murder him, belonged to her. She was dressed in a long, pink, A-Line dress, that complimented her skin tone perfectly and – suddenly, Willie understood that it was a bridesmaid’s dress. Yep, she’s Carrie’s bridesmaid, along with Flynn.
Willie wondered if she was here to rub salt on his wound.
“What do you want?” He had mumbled, averting his gaze from her dress. Sure, it’s a pretty dress, but it reminds him of Alex, because he has a hoodie that he adores in the same colour. (It’s in Willie’s closet now, and he makes a mental note to burn it.)
“We have a plan.” She said, conspiratorially.
Willie sighed, leaning down to pick up the fallen containers of ice cream. “I’m not in the mood, Jules.”
She grinned, evilly. Or as evilly as you could while having an angelic face.
Sure, it took her a while to convince him to crash his boyfriend’s wedding, but on the way here, he felt as if it was worth it. Julie helped sneak him in, since he doesn’t have an invite – and he found the rest of Alex’s friends – Luke, Reggie, and Bobby waiting for him.
Now, as Carrie’s family emerges from the church doors, he doesn’t feel that way anymore.
“God, I think I’m gonna throw up just by looking at them.” Luke murmurs, while Julie slaps his shoulder. “Don’t say that, they look very… colourful.”
  Bobby snorts.
Carrie’s family includes her parents, two of her cousin sisters and an aunt – and they are all dressed in pastel yellow. To be really honest, that colour looks like vomit. They stand in a circle in front of the church doors, and Willie notices her aunt rolling her eyes at the waiters. He sighs. This is the same aunt who told Carrie that ‘oh, honey, it’s just a phase’, when she came out as bisexual.
  “Guys, guys, guys!”
Willie sees his cousin, Flynn, running in their direction, and stopping at their table. She huffs, catching her breath and he notices that she’s wearing the same dress that Julie is.
“Carrie is losing her shit, dude.” She says, once she’s breathing normally again. “Why?” Julie asks, concerned.
“Probably because she doesn’t wanna marry Alex? I don’t know, but she yelled at me for eating!” She exclaims, an annoyed expression taking over her face.
Willie and Bobby exchange a look – they all know that Carrie can get a little intense sometimes – she doesn’t mean harm, but on a day like this, you can’t really hold it against her.
“Where is she?” Julie asks, alarmed.
“She’s in the back. Her mom misplaced her veil, and its total chaos out there. Also, her gown looks like a fucking pastry.”
Everyone’s eyes widen, and Flynn sighs, looking away. “I hate everything.”
Willie knows that she’s feeling just the way he is.
Julie stands up. “Come on, let’s help her. And boys?” She points a finger in their direction. “Stick to the fucking plan.”
Everyone nods rapidly, and Reggie whispers, “Yes, mam.”
She kisses Luke, whispering something in his ear, and squeezes Willie’s shoulder, giving him a sympathetic look, before running off in the opposite direction with Flynn.
Watching Julie and Luke, Willie is suddenly overpowered by a memory, a memory that was gathering dust in his brain. He remembers a cold, dark winter morning in their – his and Alex’s – apartment. It was last year, and their first morning in that apartment, in their home. They were nineteen and couldn’t get enough of each other – even after three years of being together. Somehow, somewhere they felt as if an invisible string was pulling them closer and closer, until they merged into one.
He remembers Alex combing his fingers through Willie’s hair, and whispering, “Is it crazy if I say that this is everything that I’ve ever wanted in life?”
He had smiled, eyes filled to the brim with euphoria. “No, then that would mean that I’m crazy.”
  “We’re both crazy.”
“Maybe.” He had pulled him closer, loving the way Alex buried his face in the crook of his neck.
“Willie?” Alex softly asked, drawing patterns on his bare skin.
  “Hmm?”
“I want to wake up next to you every single day. Like, I don’t ever wanna be without you,”
“Me, too.” He had said, then adding, “I don’t see myself marrying if not you.”
He could feel his boyfriend’s grin. “Not gonna lie, I’ve thought about it. A little.”
  “A little?”
“Okay, I’ve planned it all out.” They both laughed, and Willie felt as if he was flying.
Alex continued, “I imagine us getting married on a beautiful summer day – on the beach. Where we met all those years ago. Remember?”
Willie smiled. “How could I forget? I will love Flynn forever for bringing me to Julie’s sweet sixteen – I never thought that I’d meet my soulmate that day.”
“Yeah. I imagine Luke to be my best man, and Flynn to be yours. Julie and Carrie would be our groomsmaids, yep, I invented that – and Reggie and Bobby could be the other best men. It’s a little messy, because I love them all so much and I can’t choose – but yeah.”
“Funny that your ex-boyfriend will be your best man at our wedding.”
  “Shut up, Willie.”
“Carlos could be the ring bearer.”
“I think he’s a little too old for that.”
“Well, you have a point. But he’s gonna be pissed if he doesn’t get a title like his sister does.”
“All right, he’ll be the ring bearer.”
“We could have a skateboard shaped cake.”
  “We will… think about it.”
“And we won’t need a band!”
“I’m not playing at my own wedding!”
“Well, Bobby could take your place. I’m sure he won’t mind taking a day off his solo touring.”
  “Yeah, that sounds nice.”
As they went over every possibility, every dream, the world melted away and all Willie could see were the oceans in Alex’s eyes.
Luke’s voice dissipates the haze of nostalgia around Willie’s brain. “Yep, Carrie’s family went inside.”
Bobby nods. “Okay, Willie, you stay with Reggie and Luke – I’ll go inside first and distract everyone, and y’all will come at my signal.” With that, he runs towards the church.
“Uh… what is his signal…” Willie trails off. Luke and Reggie exchange a panicked look, as Reggie says, “I’m sure we’ll figure it out! Besides – oh my god, are those flamingos?”
Willie and Luke’s eyes dart to the church door, where a bunch of flamingos – Carrie’s favorite bird, apparently – are on the loose and the waiters and the staff are running around trying to catch them.
“Boys, I think that’s our signal.” Luke says, grabbing their hands and dragging them towards the back of the church, where the girls had previously disappeared into.
Tumblr media
Luke sneezes, and Willie absentmindedly whispers a ‘bless you.’ He shifts, saying, “There’s so much dirt here! It’s like nobody cares about my allergies!”
“I’m sure nobody in Canada will ever care about your allergies, Patterson.” Flynn hisses.
The trio are currently hiding behind a curtain, the lilac shades sickening them. “Well, you wouldn’t be in this position if Alex’s lovely bride-to-be didn’t uninvite me!” Willie exclaims, looking around to make sure nobody is nearby.
“I’m sure she has a very good reason!” Flynn says, and Luke rolls his eyes, saying, “You’re saying that as if you don’t know Carrie. She’s hyper fixating on this wedding to distract herself from the fact that her parents will never accept her for who she is, from her fear about the fact that she’ll never get someone who sees and loves her for who she is and right now, she believes that this wedding would gain her parents’ favour, that somehow they’d be okay with her being bisexual if she’s married a man, a gay man at that, too – and now she’s doing everything in her power to make sure nothing gets fucked up.”
Willie and Flynn sharply look at Luke.
“Dude, that was deep.” He whispers. Flynn dabs the corner of her right eye. “You should be a therapist, bro.”
  “I know, bro.” He grins.
Willie can’t stop a smile from breaking out on his face. He turns back to the scene in front of him, and his heart seizes because there’s Alex, dressed in a perfect tuxedo, with his hair perfectly done, with a perfect smile on his face, and Willie realizes that that is not the man he loves.
The man standing in front of him looks too pristine, too immaculate. It’s almost as if he is being strung up by invisible puppet strings, but his face doesn’t give away any of that – it’s absolutely blank, and Willie would have thought that the man in the front is not real if he hadn’t seen his eyes. His eyes, which houses cyclones, cyclones being fed by the apprehension, the fear, the anger, the sadness that he must be feeling inside. His eyes, that Willie loves to see first thing in the morning, showing off the parts of his soul that he is desperately trying to shield.
Willie wonders if he’ll see him standing behind the curtains. He probably won’t. Willie’s at the back of the room, and he’s at the front, waiting, waiting, waiting. For a moment, Willie wonders if Carrie is going to show up at all – because the wedding was supposed to start half an hour ago, and it doesn’t make sense why a person who has never been late in her entire life, would be late on her wedding day.
He doesn’t have to wonder long, though. The organ starts to play ‘Here Comes the Bride’, and honestly it sounds more like a death march. Willie is reminded, yet again, of another reason why this is not what Alex wants – he wants to play ‘Lover’ by Taylor Swift at his wedding.
Willie takes in a sharp breath when Carrie enters. She looks like a pageant queen – wearing a beautiful, white, classic dress. In one hand, she holds her dad’s arm, and in the other, there is a bouquet of daisies.
Flynn whispers. “I have to go. Boys, do not mess this up. Or I swear I’ll kill you.”
As the duo watch her run to the front of the room, Willie whispers, “Does she know about Carrie’s big, fat crush?”
Luke snorts. “You think so? Come on, let’s sit. They won’t be able to see us here.”
As they crouch down and make their way to the benches, Willie casts one last look at Alex, and he knows, he knows that Alex wishes it was Willie walking down the aisle instead.
Tumblr media
“Speak now, or forever hold your peace.” The preacher says, and Willie’s heart erupts into a frenzy. As the room goes completely silent, Luke whispers, “That’s your cue, Willie.”
Ignoring his anxiety, he stands up with his hands shaking, and his brain telling him to just fucking run out the doors.
Alex’s eyes widen, relief flooding his features, and for a moment, he looks like the real Alex again. Willie catches Julie and Flynn’s eyes, who are standing beside Carrie, and they nod at him, enthusiastically. But the bride, Carrie – she looks absolutely horrified. And so does all the other people in this room, including Alex’s parents, his grandma Ruth, and Carrie’s parents, too.
From Alex’s right side, Reggie and Bobby give him encouraging looks, and finally, he averts his eyes back to the man he loves.
But he can’t say anything. He feels as if he’s frozen in time, and his mind completely blanks out. For a moment he wonders if this is his rock bottom.
But Luke comes to the rescue, thrusting a guitar in his hands, and breaking him out of his trance. “I remember you told me that you can always sing, even if the world was ending. So, I brought this along, as backup.”
It’s true. Music is a part of his soul, much like it is Alex’s. Music is what connected them in the first place, and music is what still keeps them connected now.
He positions the guitar, and notices that it’s Luke’s acoustic guitar. He strums it, and finally, his mind comes back to himself. He keeps his eyes trained on that of Alex, and he watches the storm of emotions in his irises.
“I am not the kind of guy, who should be rudely barging in on a white veiled occasion…” He sings, loving how Taylor Swift has written a song for every occasion.
“But you are not the kind of boy, who should be marrying the wrong girl!” He sings and hears loud gasps around the room – he knows that people expected him to be in love with Carrie or something.
“Or any girl!” Reggie adds, and Alex grins, and that gives him the motivation to continue.
“So, don't say yes, run away now. I'll meet you when you're out of the church at the back door… Don't wait or say a single vow – You need to hear me out, and they said speak now!”
He drags the ‘now’ for as long as he can, because he knows that the silence that will follow will be excruciating. And it is. Alex just stares at him, an unreadable expression on his face.
Willie finally looks at Carrie, and when their eyes meet, she gives him an odd look. He half expected her to kill him, but the way she looks at him, it’s almost as if she’s relieved.
Alex clears his throat, the sound piercing through the silence of the room. Whispers arise, and Willie exchanges a look with Luke, who asks him, “You want me to dig you a hole to die?”
Before he can nod, Alex says, “Uh…” He fiddles with his hands, before finally saying, “Fuck it”, and untying his tie. His mother gasps, and his father stands up, but he raises a hand.
He locks eyes with Willie, and his world spins on its axis.
“You are not the kind of guy to be rudely barging in on a white veiled occasion…But I am not the kind of boy… who should be marrying the wrong girl… or any girl!” Alex sings in that raspy voice of his, and Willie feels his heart soar. He can’t help the grin from escaping on his face, and he knows that his eyes are what Julie calls, ‘heart eyes.’ Luke grabs the guitar from Willie’s hand and starts playing along.
“And you'll say let's run away now, and I'll meet you when I'm out of my tux at the back door,”
Alex walks down the aisle, but suddenly remembers something, or rather, someone. He turns around, locking eyes with Carrie, and Willie can’t see what he’s saying, but Carrie smiles a big, soft one – one probably no one has ever seen on her face, and he sees her mouth ‘go.’
“Baby, I didn't say my vows, so glad you were around; when they said speak now!”
He finishes, and stands in front of Willie, and Willie knows that the both of them can feel the air electrifying between them.
He turns, facing his grandmother. “Grandma, I’m sorry, but you’re 93, and I’m 20. I’m not going to give up my life for you to live. I love you, though. Mom, Dad, I’m truly sad that I’m not what you wanted. But I’m not gonna apologize for being myself, nor am I gonna apologize for loving who I want to. This is my life, and maybe it’s time that I start acting like it. I can’t keep wasting my life to please you. You – you should love me for who I am, that’s what good parents do.” Alex’s voice cracks, and Willie intertwines their fingers. Alex squeezes his hand.
Carrie’s mom stands up, shaking her head. “No, no, no… you do not get to ruin my daughter’s wedding –”
Alex’s father stands beside her, his face matching the shade of Carrie’s red lipstick. “I will not accept this –”
“Will?” Alex whispers, his eyes trained on his father.
  “Yeah?”
  “Run.”
With that, Alex tightens his hold on Willie’s hand, and the both of them run down the aisle, and outside. Willie can hear an uproar behind him, but it fades to background noise behind the thump of his heart.
“That was so fucking romantic!” Alex exclaims, as they come to a stop before Willie’s car.
  “I just…”
“Wait – I’m sorry, Willie. I shouldn’t have put you through that. I should’ve fought more; I should’ve run away or something. That was not okay. I’m a twenty-year-old adult, and I should – I should – learn to be it, and not hurt any – anyone –”
“Hey, hey, hey…” Willie says, stepping closer to Alex. “It’s alright. They’re your parents. It’s not your fault that you want their approval. But I just want you to know that I love you, all of you, for who you are. And all of us do – Luke, Julie, Bobby, Reggie, Flynn, and even Carrie. We all love you, for who you are, and we’re always gonna be by your side.”
He smiles, cupping Willie’s face. “Thank you. Thank you so much. I – I love you so fucking much.” He kisses Willie, and the latter feels like he is floating amongst the stars.
“That – everything inside – from this tux to the decorations was horrible. I’m really glad that you… you know, stopped it.” Alex says, rubbing his thumb around Willie’s cheek.
He shrugs. “Well, it was your friends’ idea.”
  “Of course it was.”
  “Guys! Guys, guys, guys!”
Willie and Alex break out of their embrace at Carrie’s voice, who is currently running towards them, her dress bunched in her hands. Flynn is following her, holding her veil in her arms. Julie, Luke, Bobby, and Reggie are behind them, and they all have a look of panic plastered on their faces.
Flynn yells. “Carrie might’ve told your and her parents to fuck off, and your grandma to just die already, and so there’s a fair chance that we’re all gonna get killed, now that everyone knows that we’re all behind this.”
“Also, I threw red wine at our aunt’s dress, Carrie!” Bobby yells.
“I might have told your parents that they’re failures, and Julie and I are your real parents, Alex!” Luke yells.
“Also, Flynn and I are getting married!” Carrie yells.
Alex’s eyes widen, and he looks at Willie. “I think we all need to run.”
Willie nods, and he looks around. Maybe they will get killed (probably not), and maybe everything is a little crazy right now – but what he knows is that all of them are a family, and that he’d do anything for them. He also knows that Alex is worth everything, and that someday, they will get married, just the way they want, with the people that love them just the way they are.
Plus, is it weird to say that he kind of feels like Taylor Swift right now?

headcanons cause i’m in flarrie hours
they are THE couple when it comes to halloween costumes
all their outfits for big events (parties, gigs where dirty candy and/or jatp perform) are coordinated
carrie my femme queen & flynn my nonbinary lesbian darling
go to protests & marches together
flynn lends carrie books by her favorite Black female authors & carrie lends her books by her favorite sapphic poets
they make playlists about each other but the other doesn’t know they do it (julie & kayla are the only ones permitted to know of the existence of these playlists & have been sworn to secrecy, though julie has a strong suspicion carrie also makes playlists about flynn and vice versa)
have a joint pinterest account for their wedding moodboard
carrie adopted a tiger cub and named it flynn for their three month anniversary
they go to the mall together every other weekend and shop, which they both love to do and when they get home they always model the new outfits they bought
flynn squeals every time they see a dog in public and always runs over and asks if they can pet it and carrie always watches her with such a fond look that the owner almost always makes a comment on what a lovely couple they are or asks how long they’ve been together (something that has actually been happening since even before they were dating, and back then you can imagine the flustered ness it caused)
flynn often comes to watch dirty candy rehearsals, cheer them on, make sure they’re staying hydrated/taking snack breaks and that carrie’s not overworking herself
carrie is the first person that flynn tells she wants to DJ professionally and carrie gets her her first gig
eventually flynn gets into producing as well and ends up making a track for carrie, who writes lyrics to it and it becomes dirty candy’s most successful song to date
carrie says i love you first one saturday afternoon while they’re watching a movie on flynn’s computer in her room. flynn laughs at a joke and carrie looks over at her, her beautiful, incredible girlfriend, and simply can’t resist the urge to say it
flynn’s shocked into silence so carrie panics and leaves and doesn’t answer flynn’s messages
that night flynn shows up at the wilson mansion and throws rocks at carrie’s window until she comes out
flynn is upset with carrie for running out and ghosting her and carrie’s trying to defend herself so they argue but then flynn interrupts carrie by kissing her and breathlessly saying, “i love you.” carrie kisses her and not another word on it is said
carrie steals flynn’s hats
they’re not really PDA-y, they just happen to engage in a lot of unconscious, casual affection, like flynn often absentmindedly intertwines their pinkies and carrie doesn’t realize her arm is around flynn’s shoulders until she’s doing it
even after months of dating will still flirt like they’re in their enemies who are secretly very attracted to e/o era
flynn really loves art, particularly murals, so she drags carrie to a lot of gallery openings and museums
at one point when flynn’s going through a hard time carrie enlists all their friends for help making a giant mural full of drawings of things that make her happy
flynn happy cries when she sees it and is pretty much always seen hugging carrie for the rest of that night
only really cuddle when one (or both) of them is sleepy, though flynn does often sit on carrie’s lap
before starting to date, carrie would tease flynn for having stuffed animals during their sleepovers at flynn’s until they started dating and flynn started spending more time at carrie’s and flynn discovers that her girlfriend’s a little hypocrite
flynn has a younger sister and brother (sister is six, brother is four) and they absolutely ADORE carrie and think she’s the coolest and carrie thinks they’re the cutest
flynn’s like no they’re little demons and carrie’s says who says demons can’t be cute? you once called me a demon right, and im cute, aren’t i? and flynn rolls her eyes and fights back a smile
flynn also has a college aged older sister who she looks up to a lot, like that’s her hero and absolute role model, so naturally carrie’s terrified to meet her, and though she tries to appear intimidating at first, she can’t keep up the act for long and starts being friendly with carrie pretty much right away
one day they’re supposed to go on a date but carrie’s sick and forgot to text flynn telling her not to come so flynn shows up at her house but stays anyway to look after her
flynn reads to her and makes her soup
trevor & flynn play video games while carrie naps
flynn makes jewelry in her free time and consults carrie for her thoughts on every piece (in junior year she starts selling them at school & turns out to be quite the entrepreneur)
they have an inside joke about cosmo and wanda
a couple of the dirty candy members sometimes jokingly flirt with flynn and are like “watch out! we’re gonna steal your girl!” and carrie gets possessive and apologizes for it pretty quickly but flynn thinks it’s hot so it works out pretty well
will watch bad rom coms to make fun of straight people and throw popcorn at the screen when they get together
pet/nick names: care, baby, babe, love, (from carrie to flynn who shuts down upon hearing it) honey, (flynn to carrie, who becomes very giddy the first time flynn says it in a text message) sweetheart
if you couldn’t tell before they ofc have an enemies to friends to lovers arc
move in together after graduating, neither planning on going to college (julie goes to berkeley and nick some other place in california where they have lacrosse cause that’s the sport he plays right) and their parents think it’ll be a disaster but it actually goes really well
the first couple of weeks they fight more, all petty arguments mostly out of the stress of moving, but they always talk it out
it doesn’t take long for them to be happy they’re living together and feel really glad they took that step
two years after graduating flynn gives her a promise ring
carrie cries her eyes out and replies “of fucking course, you dumb fuck” when flynn asks if she’ll take it
ten years later carrie’s a successful pop star/choreographer & flynn’s a record breaking producer/DJ and they’re about to buy a house when they realize they never got married
it’s just a moment where they’re relaxing together on the couch and suddenly are like. oh
and proceed to burst out laughing
it’s a small ceremony, thrown together in just three weeks
carrie wears a short, light pink dress with a heart cutout in the back that would probably be more suited for a high school sophomore’s spring fling but no one cares
flynn wears a suit, and is walked down the aisle by her older sister
they both tear up upon seeing each other and sob through the vows (the traditional pre written ones, they wrote vows for each other but they recite them to the other when they’re alone, so it’s something special only they can share)
julie & kayla are the maids of honor, nick and alex are the best men
julie & luke’s five year old hernando is the ring bearer & alex and willie’s three year old umi is the flower child
trevor, flynn’s older sister and parents cry
even flynn’s now teenage younger siblings, who as of late have often been stereotypically cynical and moody shed tears
jatp perform at the reception (they have also become a hit band at this point)
when they get back from the honeymoon the first thing they do is get a dog
they adopt a golden doodle rescue named stella
a couple years later they start talking about kids and look into getting a sperm donor
because they love being competitive they do little games to decide who will be the one to carry the baby
it’s all jokes though, they decided at the start of the process that it would be flynn for the first kid and carrie for the second
but then SURPRISE flynn has twins
a boy and a girl named tyler and ollie (who’s who i won’t tell you cause fuck gender)
they don’t even talk about carrie getting pregnant now cause they’re busy with the babies and trying to manage their careers but one night, when the kids are eight, and flynn has just flopped onto the couch with a dramatic sigh after putting them to bed, carrie puts down her kindle and quietly says that she wants another kid.
they talk for hours because while flynn wants another kid too, when you’re both celebrities with demanding jobs and people constantly trying to peer into your life, that decision involves even more factors
they decide to have another kid and carrie chooses to take a step back from her career for now-she’ll return to it eventually but for now she wants to be able to just be a parent without worrying about work and not have to deal with the guilt that comes with working when she feels like she should be being a parent
though the kids have always been their main priority and they have done quite well dividing their time between work and being with them, and have done decently shielding them from the public eye (majority of the pictures of ollie & tyler that the public has are blurry candids, and the few high quality ones are from when they were three and they no longer look like that anyway so it’s all good)
it’s a harder process for carrie to get pregnant as she’s almost 40 and flynn was 31 when she had tyler and ollie
but it happens though they’re careful about choosing the sperm donor-even briefly consider asking reggie or nick-because with this kind of thing there’s always the risk that other parent could track down where their kid ended up and want to be a part of that kid’s life later on which is uber complicated for many reasons so they get those scary possibilities out of the way by just finding someone who they know wants to be in the child’s life
preston choi, a thai & korean american mathematics professor ends up being their guy
he’s immensely genuine, sweet, respectful, polite, and gentlemanly
when he came out at fifteen his parents kicked him out of the house
it was a long and difficult journey but they’re in a decent place now
but it’s not the family he wants to have and he’s tried but has yet to find a partner
but doesn’t want to wait to have kids so here he is, more than happy to co parent with flynn and carrie
so that’s what they do! tyler and ollie become big siblings to miles wilson-choi on december 10th, 2044
miles grows up in the most multicultural home ever, being fluent in 4 languages (English, AAVE, Spanish thanks to their tia julie, Korean, and Thai) all their life
tyler & ollie welcome preston and miles into the family with open arms, as well as the addition of korean and thai cuisine to the already amazing dinner tables they had of soul and caribbean food
when miles is seven carrie goes back to work full time, with preston’s assurance that he’s got this when her and flynn are busy and tyler and ollie (who are now fifteen) promising they’ll help out as well
at that point the long awaited julie and the phantoms/carrie and flynn wilson collaboration FINALLY happens
flynn wins her 28th grammy for it, leaving her tied with beyoncé for most grammys won by any woman ever (its julie’s 14th, luke’s 6th, and carrie’s 12th, and the band’s collective 10th cause alex never did any solo projects and reggie released one country album but it didn’t win any grammys rip though it was nominated for 2 CMAs)

MEET THE PRESS
August 3, 1969
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You are clued into the frank and tough talk to come by the way Lucille Ball swipes away with her handkerchief at the flies threatening the hors d’oeuvres The kerchief almost snaps like a wet towel.
The scene is the pool patio of her home on Beverly Hills’ Roxbury Drive and a cocktail party is in progress for visiting television editors.
Lucy has just emerged from the main house. She wears a powder blue double-breasted slack suit and saucer-sized sun glasses. In the blazing sun her orange hair has the color intensity of hot coals.
She has counted heads. Husband-producer Gary Morton is there. So are Desi Arnaz IV her son, and Lucy her daughter. And her TV side-kick Gale Gordon with his wife. Plus a half-dozen of her staff and CBS emissaries. There have been introductions all round to the newspaper types. It is time, she announces, to talk and she waves everybody into the big and comfortable pool house. A table has been positioned so that she can sit there presiding as she used to do at the stockholders’ meetings of the old Desilu Studios.
Almost immediately some wag fields her the question: “Lucy do you run the show?” She flashes him that big innocent TV look of hers. A staff member jumps up “Let’s all answer that one for her” There is a resounding “YES” from family-and-cast. Everybody laughs uproariously.
Very few questions are required to prime the pump. Lucy, it seems, has some matters of personal irritation on her mind and as far as she is concerned they come tumbling out without any prodding from her would-be interrogators.
First of all, she asks rhetorically, what’s all this business about whether she would retire? “I never said I wanted to quit or retire. There was a time when I was willing to quit but nobody asked me. Now I’ve set a date when I’ll retire”
A lot of ears perk up Somebody asks slyly — when? She’s waiting for that. Her answer is smilingly emphatic: “When I drop dead in my tracks.”
She turns then without anybody’s questioning to the matter of her longevity in television. This is her 18th year on the tube and it used to be talked about that she traded her popularity to CBS in return for its buying other shows produced by her company. This evokes an almost visible jet of steam out of the top of her carrot locks. “I never at any time sold any of the 20 shows our company produced on the basis of my returning each season. I’ve said that literally hundreds of times and nobody believed it.”
She went on to make it clear that she also dislikes the “big business” image which has adhered to her over the years. “I never like to talk about big money. I make my deal and that’s all. It’s been mostly a matter of legal procedures.”
Tumblr media
As the star wades into these fiscal subjects your eye roams over the assemblage. Young Desi in tennis togs impassively studies the smoke curling up from a cigarette. Young Lucy clutches her hands around her knees and stares intently at her mother. Husband Gary sitting on a ledge at the back of the room swings his legs and smiles.
There has been no mention of Desi the elder the former husband Lucy’s co-performer and co-founder of Desilu Studios (now sold). Earlier this writer had chatted briefly with young Desi. He said he saw his father off and on and spends his summers as a rule at the father’s beach home at Delmar, south of Los Angeles.
The youngster asked if I knew his grandfather Dr. Desiderio Arnaz who lives in Coral Gables.  (1)
But back to Lucy She’s telling us how many years it took to realize that as Lucille Ball she had attained V.I.P. status.
She reviews the years she spent trying to make it in show business, first on the stage, then as a model, and finally in the movies. Much of the time she says she stagnated. Until television came along.
“I never had any sense of importance. I was very pliable always willing to do what I was told It wasn’t until one day I saw in print somewhere some actress described as a ‘Lucille Ball type’ that I knew suddenly I was somebody and a part of the business.”
From there on the interview jumps from subject to subject.
I ask her whatever happened to the project Dean Martin’s producer Greg Garrison had for starring Martin, her, and Jackie Gleason in a revival of the musical “Guys and Dolls.”  (2)
“I never said I would do it. Garrison kept publicizing it, but he never cleared it with me. I do still want to do ‘Diamond Jim’ with Jackie It’s just a matter of finding the time.” (3)
A lady editor wants to know how Lucy keeps her sinuous figure.
“I don’t particularly like food. I’m not very fond of meat, for example, except in the morning.”
Which brings a snort of disgust from her husband. “Can you imagine what it’s like to have to watch her eating corned beef or hamburger at 6 o’clock in the morning?”
The questions now go to the children. What are Desi’s plans? Does he want to make acting his future? “I want to be an actor for awhile but I don’t think I ever want to be one certain thing.”
Young Lucy, who, at 18, is two years older than her brother, is more sure of her future “I’ll go to college for awhile but I like acting. I’ll stay at it if I can.”
Would she somebody asks join the campus protest and carry a sign? Only if it says ‘wet paint’ quips she.
Lucy now introduces her cast veteran, Gale Gordon. He pays her extravagant compliments and talks a bit about his radio and early television days.
The interview’s late arrival is venerable George Marshall, who is now the show’s director. Lucy introduces him as “our sexy senior citizen.” Marshall goes back to the dawn of movies and is filled with fascinating anecdotes about his years in the business. (4)
The conversation turns to TV’s talk shows. Somebody suggests to Lucy that she would be a highly likely guest for Merv Griffin’s new show starting on CBS Aug 18. (5)
Lucy's answer comes lancing back “That’s what you think. I don’t like him.” Which rocks everybody back. Why not? “Because he doesn’t know how to interview. He’s rude to his guests and he monopolizes the conversation.”
She doesn’t wait for the next question. “I’m wild about Dick Cavett (on ABC) I think he’s great And I told Bill Paley (board chairman of CBS) he should have him on our network. But Bill said ABC got him first and we’re out of luck.” (6)
Everybody is suddenly distracted by three teen-age girl fans leaning over a fence way up front. They’re begging to be allowed on the grounds. Morton jogs forward to shoo them away.
“This happens all the time,” says Lucy. “My God they used to picnic right in front of the house until our police department stopped them. Jimmy Stewart, who lives up the street, finally told me how to keep them away. Turn on the lawn sprinklers.”
Morton returns and takes everybody for a tour of their luxurious but very lived-in home. Lucy tells us a funny story about how Jack and Mary Benny had once been their next door neighbors sold their home then asked her to try to mediate a re-sale of the place back to them. Then we take our leave.

Tumblr media
(1) Dr. Desiderio Alberto Arnaz y Alberni II (1894-1973) was a Cuban politician and the father of Desi Arnaz. He graduated from the Southern College of Pharmacy in 1913 in Atlanta, Georgia. Desiderio Arnaz II was the youngest mayor of Santiago de Cuba (1923–32). When president Machado was overthrown in August 1933, Arnaz was arrested and jailed. Six months later, he was allowed to go into exile. He married Dolores "Lolita" de Acha y de Socias in 1916 and had one son, Desiderio "Desi" Arnaz III. He later had a daughter, Connie Arnaz (1932), with Anne M. Wilson, whom he married in 1941.

(2) Guys & Dolls was a 1950 stage musical by Frank Loesser, based on the stories by Damon Runyon starring Robert Alda, who appeared on several episodes of “The Lucy Show” and “Here’s Lucy”.  It was filmed by MGM in 1955. During that time, Lucy and Desi were also under contract to MGM, so they prevailed upon “I Love Lucy” to insert a clip from the film into “Lucy and the Dummy” (ILL S5;E3). After its initial airing on October 17, 1955, the clip was removed from the film print, and for legal reasons, has never been restored. It is unclear whether Garrison’s project with Martin, Ball, and Gleason would have been a film revival, or a stage production. Whatever it was to be, Lucy wanted to have no part of it, perhaps remembering the rigors of performing on stage in Wildcat (1960). During her film career, Ball was in two films based on Damon Runyon material, The Big Street (1942), a film she claimed as her favorite, and Sorrowful Jones (1949). She also did a radio version of Runyon’s “Tight Shoes” in 1942. Ball and Gleason would have been cast as Miss Adelaide and Nathan Detroit, while Dean Martin would have played Sky Masterson, the romantic lead. Those roles were played by Vivian Blaine, Frank Sinatra, and Marlon Brando in the film. Obviously, the project never came to be.

(3) “Diamond Jim” was a project that Lucy dearly wanted to make with Gleason. He would play Diamond Jim Brady (1856-1917) to her Lillian Russell. Ball even went so far as to have a script written to further grab Gleason’s attention. Despite their best intentions, Gleason and Ball’s schedules never allowed for enough time to make the film.

(4) George Marshall (1891-1975) had directed Lucille Ball in Valley of the Sun (1942) and Fancy Pants (1950).  He was considered an expert at location shooting, so when “Here’s Lucy” wanted to spend the first four episodes of Season 2 on location, Marshall was hired as director. He stayed on for seven more episodes of the sitcom before bowing out.
Tumblr media
(5) Despite Lucille Ball’s rather harsh public assessment of Merv Griffin (1925-2007) at this August 1969 press party, Ball appeared on “The Merv Griffin Show” four times between 1971 and 1980! During her first appearance, the aforementioned George Marshall was also a guest!
Tumblr media
(6) Lucille did seem to enjoy doing the talking to Dick Cavett, although she only got to do his chat show once, on March 7, 1974, in conjunction with her press tour for Mame.
