Summary: Being a small town, the Whitechapel high school hockey team and competitive figure skaters often run into each other at the local stadium. Benny has been admiring you from afar, unaware that you’ve been doing the same.

Joining his school’s hockey team was probably the best thing Benny had ever done. He didn’t care much for the sport itself, but he looked forward to every practice. Not to get better at hockey or because he liked being in a freezing skating rink for two hours three times a week.

It was because he got to see you practice your routine.

The Whitechapel hockey team and figure skaters had to share a rink, and for some reason, their practices were on the same days. The figure skating team was always first, and then the hockey team would practice right after. When he and Ethan first made the hockey team, they decided to get to practice early to have a good layout of what would be happening.

That’s when he saw you. Lacing your skates while your partner yelled for you, the impatient beckoning voice echoing through the stadium. You rolled your eyes and went onto the ice, making a comment to your partner that only he could hear before music started playing from the speakers.

Benny was immediately entranced by everything about you. It wasn’t just your beauty, but the fluidity of your movements and radiating confidence as you and your partner went through your routine. He fixated on every turn, every jump. It was all just so fascinating.

“You know, you can talk to her when she’s done.” Ethan sighed as he sat beside Benny, who focused on your movements. “She won’t bite, I think.”

“Are you kidding me?” Benny almost laughed, tearing his eyes away from you on the rink to look at his best friend. “She’s so out of my league, E. She wouldn’t give me the time of day.” It was probably untrue; you seemed really nice. Benny just said that because he didn’t want to face rejection from you. Which is why he decided very early on that it was better to admire from afar.

“Sarah has a class with Y/n, says she’s really nice.” Ethan shrugged before bending over to tug on his skates. “Just saying.”

Benny ignored Ethan, opting to see the end of your routine, which finished off with a lift. As the music cut off, he clapped quietly to not draw attention to himself but still show support.

“Isn’t she amazing?” He asked while you skated off the rink.

“Yeah, she’s great. Now, come on, let’s get on the ice.” Ethan left without an answer, leaving Benny to scramble to get his equipment on and ready while the rest of the hockey team came into the stadium.

On the other side of the ice, you were unlacing your skates, glancing up every few seconds to see Benny warm up and talk to Ethan. You smiled softly when Ethan said something that made him laugh, the sound echoing through the giant room.

“All that staring isn’t gonna do anything. You know that, right?” James, your skating partner, said, smirking down at you with his gym bag tossed over his shoulder.

“I’m not staring.” You muttered, looking down to pull off your skates.

“Just talk to him! I heard he’s nice.”

“I can’t talk to Benny, and you know it.” You huff, looking up at James. “I have too much on my mind. Our competition is in a month, and we need our routine nailed down.”

“You need our routine nailed down.”

“Besides, I don’t even know what I would say to him. ‘Hi, Benny. We’ve never talked before, but I always see you during our practices, and I think you’re really cute. By the way, my name’s Y/n. Wanna go out sometime?’”

“Dude, that’s great, just say that.” You groaned, tired of this conversation that the two of you have had probably a million times. Gathering your things, you took one last look at Benny before getting up to leave. “Y/n, I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I think you can spare one day to talk to Benny and ignore everything else.”

You brushed past James, choosing to ignore his words. You were fine with looking at Benny rather than talking to him. James watched you leave the stadium before trying to find Benny on the ice. The boy had done the same, watching your movements until you went through the door and out of sight.

“What do you mean our practices are overlapped?” You asked your coach, trying to contain your anger.

“It means exactly what it means, Y/n.” Your coach sighed, clearly just as frustrated with the situation as you were. “The stadium is doing some kind of skating program, so a lot of the time is being taken up by lessons and group skating. Our options were either doing practice with the hockey team simultaneously or alternating days. And the boys’ coach was very vocal about his opinion.”

“You should see this as a blessing in disguise, N/n,” James said, pulling you into the stadium and to your usual bench to get ready.

“How exactly is this a blessing, James? We have half an ice rink.”

“Guess who’ll be on the other half, smarty.” He pointed to the other side of the ice, and you followed his finger to see Benny laughing and smiling with his friend. You slapped his hand down immediately, looking away before either of the boys could notice.

“Don’t point at him!” You hissed.

“I’ll stop pointing when you start talking to him.”

“Oh my god, just get your skates on.”

Practicing a competitive skating routine in the same space as armored jocks that liked to bodyslam and wave their hockey sticks around was a lot harder than you realized. Every few seconds, you had to stop your run-through to speed out of the way of a runaway puck or some guy that was chasing after it. And this was in no way a blessing in disguise like James had suggested because although you knew Benny’s jersey number, you could never catch him with all the fast movements. And on the rare occasion you did, he was as far away from you as possible.

“I’m getting sick of this.” You muttered, getting back to your starting position. “One more time, and then I’m out of here.”

“Agreed.” James groaned, rubbing his shoulder from where a hockey player had just checked him. You knew it was an accident, but the lack of a proper apology made you decide differently. He settled into his position next to you, looking at your coach, who was waiting to start your music.

You tried to ignore all the grunting and shoving to the best of your ability, letting muscle memory guide you through the music. So far, it was going smoothly. The part you were worried most about because of your spatial situation was a lift halfway through your song.

Taking a deep breath, you grabbed James’ hand and tried to stand as lightly on his thigh as possible while he stayed kneeling on one knee on the ice. Quickly, James placed his free hand on your stomach and stood, twirling you around as you tried staying horizontal. After a few spins, James set you down, and your intertwined hands separated and pushed you away from each other. Trying to keep an equal distance, you both skated backward around your half of the rink, maintaining eye contact.

“Y/n, look out!” James suddenly shouted, pointing to something behind you. Before you could look to what you should look out for, you were grabbed and whisked away to the side, face smooshed into a chest of hockey armor. You heard the music shut off, and everything seemed to calm down. But you didn’t want to pull away from whoever you were pressed up against.

“You okay?” The voice was a bit familiar, but you know you’ve never heard it from talking to this person directly. Lifting your head away from the safety of his chest, you saw Benny looking down at you. His eyes skated over your face, probably trying to ensure there wasn’t any injury. But he had also never seen you this up close before, and wanted to save the moment.

“Yeah.” You answered, albeit a bit softly. You hoped that your reddening cheeks could be written off as being in a cold environment and not trying to contain the excitement of being so close to someone you’ve secretly had your eyes on for a while. “What happened?”

“Hockey puck went rogue.” Benny gave you a cute, lopsided smile. “Figured that based on my playing ability, it was better to get you out of the way instead of going after the puck.”

“I’ve seen you at your practices. I bet you play just fine.” You responded with a sheepish shrug before slapping a hand over your mouth. “I mean, not that I watch you all the time. I just see you every now and then, you know? It’s not like I spend all my time-”

“I watch you at your practices, too.” Benny cut you off, smile becoming more shy at your confessions. “You’re really good, by the way. Like, really awesome.”

“Weir!” One of his teammates yelled to him from the hockey team’s side of the rink. He looked over his shoulder to see the kid beckoning him over. “Get over here!”

Benny groaned, turning back to you.

“I gotta go, but do you maybe wanna get some food sometime? I know a really good spot that I go to after practices sometimes.”

“I’d love that.” You didn’t bother to try to tone down your growing grin. You caught Benny’s teammates looking at the two of you, probably grumbling about him not practicing. “You should probably go. Don’t want the team getting mad at you.”

Benny let you go, although you could sense he didn’t want to. With a small wave and a big smile, he skated back to his team.

“Told you it was a blessing in disguise.” James startled you with his sudden presence, voice practically in your ear. You smacked his chest and laughed, going to make your way off the rink to let one of the other figure skating partners practice.

Preface: I am a white settler residing on Gitxsan territory. I have compiled this list (guided by this infographic from Covid19Indigenous, conversation with Indigenous friends, and conversation I’m seeing on social media) for anyone who wants to educate themselves about Indigenous people and/or support Indigenous people. I have done my best to only center Indigenous voices however, I acknowledge that as a white settler, I have blind spots, and if there are any issues with the list I have compiled or something should be added or removed, please let me know.

James mumbles: I'm hungry *looks at Niki mournfully who has fallen asleep *

James: While Elio's doing his very best to become our own personal commentator.

James: Nelson and Alain aren't even watching the game but discussing the current racing season.

James mumbles: Maybe I should actually send those three into the bed room.

James remembers that Riccardo is in the bedroom, sick with the flu.

James: Maybe that's not that great of an idea after all...

James: Andrea still thinks we're watching ice hockey and keeps asking when Michael Jordan's gonna show up. 🤦‍♀️

James: Ayrton won't stop ranking the players looks.

James: *huffs * Jacques and Patrick have been singing the german national anthem for ten minutes straight *pulls a face * and that totally off key.

James: René is comparing everything to the wrestling match that he watched yesterday. He's even bitching about the jerseys not being as cool as the wrestling ones.

James: Now René's bitching about why they won't just settle the score with an awesome wrestling match *rubs bridge of his nose *

James. Honestly Didier seems to be the only one somewhat keeping up with the game.

James: Bruno is trying to beat Brazil on his game boy *mumbles * he got world cup usa for christmas... even though he could be literally watching the game RIGHT NOW!

Later:

*cheering in the background *

James looking scared: Brazil just won the world cup and I think Ayrton and Nelson are transforming into something.

Nelson and Ayrton: *actually hugging and celebrating together *

James: *looks even more scared *

James shakes Niki awake, who somehow hasn't been woken up by Ayrton and Nelson loosing their shit.

Niki groggily: What? What's going on, is the match over?

James: *points at Ayrton and Nelson, still hugging and jumping around with each other *

Niki:

*sobbing *

James and Niki both turn and see Elio clinging to Nigel, utterly inconsolable and sobbing hysterically.

Niki:

Niki: Did I wake in another dimension??!

Riccardo suddenly comes walking into the room looking like a zombie. He takes one look at the crying Elio, one look at the hugging Ayrton and Nelson before he just turns around again and leaves the room.

Bruno, btw, doesn't care at all that Italy lost the world cup because on his game boy he (read: Italy) beat Brazil.

Going back to your post about calculating BTR showverse ages (first of all it was amazing btw) I was wondering, did you believe that the years were accurate? Like did it all take place in the year of when the episodes premiered or did they have different canonically years like some tv shows do?

Ahhh thank you!! 💖✨To be honest, I don’t think the years were completely accurate, but I think it can go both ways depending on how you look at it. When I was making the BTR showverse ages post, I was basing it off of the episode release dates—call it chronological order if you will—mainly because it made the most sense to me. After all, growing up I thought I was just watching a bunch of “high school” hockey players from Minnesota making music while getting into wacky hijinks.

And for some episodes, the chronological thing kinda worked! In “Big Time Tests”, which was released on June 27, 2013, Logan takes the MCAT exam. According to this website, the summer session for the MCAT takes place between June and July. Although, assuming that Logan was “graduating” from high school, I don’t think one can go straight to med school from high school without earning a bachelor’s degree first class (unless there are special programs out there that do offer that, but then again, idk jack abt anything and that’s just my overthinking brain for you lol). Chronological order should make the most sense, because it’s easier for our brains to comprehend/its what our brain defaults to, right?

But then we hit a point in the BTR showverse where chronological order gets questioned, and I get confused and ask myself, “so are the guys still in high school or....?” I mean, I know the guys were in their 20s when they were casted to play 15-16 year olds, but season 4/a little bit of season 3 hit a point where they all looked like borderline college students. Maybe it was around the time James and Kendall had similar haircuts. And apart of me sometimes questioned whether or not they were (at least at the time season 3 and 4) still in high school.

Thus, here are some reasons (not saying that they’re good ones) why I think BTR could’ve had different canonical years:

In “Welcome Back Big Time”, the guys are to perform at Rocktoberfest, which judging by the name, we could infer that it takes place in October. According to the BTR wiki, the original air date for this episode was September 25, 2010 (USA) and January 28, 2011 (CAN).

The last time the show has shown the guys in a school setting was “Green Time Rush”. And for the rest of the show (minus Big Time Prom Kings i guess?), the guys are never shown in school/doing school activities again. Did they finish their high school studies early? Were we supposed to assume that the showverse guys were continuing their studies behind the scenes? I don’t know, chief! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Either way, we really got deprived of a “Big Time Graduation” episode 😔

In the How To Rock crossover episode with BTR, “How to Win an Election” (which aired about two months before season 3 of BTR premiered), main protagonist Kacey asks the guys, “Don’t you guys remember what high school was like?” Later on towards the end of the episode one of the guys (I think it was Logan?) said, “We talked it over and we ended up sharing our embarrassing high school stories.” This implies the guys have finished their high school studies and are no longer attending school. Whereas, in their show, the guys are still (questionably) portrayed as high schoolers. But then again, we don’t know if the guys were playing their showverse characters or as their irl selves.

At the end of a day, I’m just an overthinker of a fan over-analyzing one of my favorites TV shows lol. So who’s to say what’s right and what’s wrong? What’s canon and what’s theory? I just find it fascinating to find the logic in a show that has left me with many unanswered questions. Like how come Carlos was affected by Gustavo’s shock system in “Big Time Strikes”, but in “Big Time Break Up” the metal plate in his head makes him immune to the shocks from Logan and Kelly? Or what happened to Stephanie King and why did no one acknowledge her disappearance after “Big Time Dance”? And just like the amount of licks it gets to the center of a tootsie pop: no one really knows.

hey james!!!! this is a genuine question bc i Don’t Understand trades, so im sorry if it comes out a little bit clueless. is it worth it to trade a player for like, a 5th round pick on the draft? 5th rounds+ seems So Far to me (that may be my own ignorance speaking though). it seems weird to trade a player who is out there every night on the line up for a potential player who may or may not be worth it? sorry i really don’t wanna sound mean, it just seems weird in my head, i thought most players were traded for at least a couple of draft picks, not just one (btw this question is inspired by the raffl trade but not exclusive to it! i thought of him more as an example of what i’ve seen, but i definitely don’t know enough to say it was a bad trade or a good one)

hi, im sorry it took me so long to get to this but i wanted to give it a legit answer and nick robertson kind of took over my brain last night. basically, which trades are “worth it” depends on where teams are in their rebuild process. the fun thing about hockey is that teams are either rebuilding or winning, and even teams that are super bad are in the stage of rebuild that is basically “suck really bad on purpose for draft picks,” unless youre the buffalo sabres rn, because their whole game plan is basically “the pegulas light money on fire until the franchise dies,” seemingly. it WAS weird, however, for the flyers to have traded a player who is out on the ice every night for what will essentially amount to nothing. you should watch steve dangle’s videos about the trade deadline and also listen to his most recent podcast episode (also about the trade deadline) because he covers things really well there. while teams who are both really good at drafting and really good at developing players (hi leafs, hey tampa) can make nhlers out of late round draft picks (and also, youll notice, cup winning teams often do have several late round draft picks on their rosters), the reality is that yeah, a late round draft pick simply is not as valuable as a roster player.

now, gms will also trade players like that for late rounders to shed contracts because in the salary cap era, that shit matters a TON. theres also the fact that every guy in the room affects the mood and atmosphere of the team, and if theres a guy who adversely affects those things, the gm might be willing to settle for less to trade him out. thats not what happened with michael raffl AT ALL, but thats a big part of the reason (imo) kasperi kapanen was traded, even though kyle dubas definitely got a better than equal return for that trade.

this got long but basically, like, every team and every gm trades players for different reasons, and what assets (that sounds cold but this is purely from a business standpoint im sorry) are worth is different for every team, and a good gm (kyle dubas, steve yzerman, julien brisebois), uses that to his advantage when trading. as for the raffl trade specifically, if you want my full take on that trade, hit me up again lmao

Personally I don’t have receipts. I just don’t like him. He’s always given me a bad vibe and I hated him even when he played for Nashville, who I like a lot. Idk if anyone else has specific reasons to hate him, he’s just one of my least favorite players and I don’t have a reason why besides “gives me a bad feeling”

Also thanks it’s cool, I don’t get rude anons often. Just wish they hadn’t used a slur when referring to Byfuglien; it’s a bad look for an otherwise cool fanbase

21 Fantasy Hockey Rambles

Every Sunday, we'll share 21 Fantasy Rambles – formerly 20 Fantasy Thoughts – from our writers at DobberHockey. These thoughts are curated from the past week's ‘Daily Ramblings’.

1. Blue Jackets’ Matt Duchene had a fantastic Round 1 series with seven points in four games. Aside from the points, he led the team in adjusted shot share at five-on-five and Columbus outscored Tampa Bay 4-1 when he was on the ice at five-on-five.

Duchene didn’t do a whole lot in the regular season post-deadline but his play in the first round made his acquisition completely worth it. What a marvelous series. (apr18)

2. On the topic of Duchene pulling through, how about Max Pacioretty and Jordan Eberle? Remember when those two were players a franchise couldn’t rely upon for big performances? Pacioretty has 10 points in five games with the Sharks on the verge of elimination Sunday, while Eberle had four goals and six points in the four-game sweep of the Penguins. Their respective performances are just a reminder to casual hockey fans that they’re very good players. (apr18)

3. Antti Raanta and Darcy Kuemper: which goalie is the sleeper next year?

How far does Raanta’s injury and uncertainty surrounding his grip on the starting role push down his ADP? Does Kuemper’s great season and potential push for the top job drive up his ADP? Will these two be drafted in relatively the same tier as, say, Matt Murray and Marc-Andre Fleury were a few years ago?

I am fascinated to see where these guys are valued by the market, especially if the Coyotes make some moves this offseason either in the trade or free agency markets. Or both. (apr16)

4. Kyle Connor is the least talked about upcoming RFA this summer. People are whispering about offer sheets all over the place but the Winnipeg cap, coupled with his strong production, may lead to some interesting negotiations. (apr17)

5. This won’t be an easy offseason for the Jets, who will have as many as 15 pending free agents to sort out. For example, Connor and Patrik Laine will need contracts, which means that the Jets might not be able to afford UFAs Kevin Hayes and Brandon Tanev.

Then there’s the defense. Have Jacob Trouba and Tyler Myers both played their last games as Jets? Beyond pillars Dustin Byfuglien and Josh Morrissey, this group could look very different. At least fantasy owners should finally be able to see Sami Niku on the Jets for a full season.

Then you also have to wonder whether coach Paul Maurice’s job is safe after what appeared to be a missed opportunity. Needless to say, they’ll be lots of fantasy implications to break down with this team this offseason. (apr21)

6. The Blue Jackets’ four-game sweep of the Lightning has easily been the surprise story of the NHL playoffs so far. The Islanders’ four-game sweep of the Penguins will come in as a not-too-distant second in that department. And there’s the Flames, out in five against the Avs, as well. That isn’t good news if you’d built your fantasy playoff roster around the likes of Nikita Kucherov and Sidney Crosby.

There’s the old expression “when you lose, don’t lose the lesson.” So, can fantasy owners learn anything from these surprise quick exits of the Lightning and Penguins, two teams that have been on the short list of Stanley Cup contenders over the last few years? Follow this link for at least three takeaways about the topic. (apr20)

7. Rookie Alexandre Texier’s developmental arc has been something to marvel. As the youngest player in the crop, he was drafted halfway through the second round in 2017 out the top league in France. All he’s done since is make the Columbus scouting staff look like geniuses.

He had a very strong year in the Finnish Liiga as an 18-year-old in 2017-18. This past season, his 41 points in 55 contests were the second most by a U20 player. He came over to the American League to close out the campaign and scored five goals and seven points in as many games. That earned him the call to the big club and I’m guessing he won’t be heading down any time soon.

Texier will be an extremely interesting player to rank heading into fantasy hockey drafts next season. Keeper leagues need to be all over this guy, but his original draft slot coupled with a bit of no-name vibe could push him into sleeper territory. That is, of course, if he doesn’t go off this postseason.

The 19-year-old has been skating on a line with Nick Foligno and Josh Anderson at even-strength and seeing some second unit power play deployment. With Artemi Panarin almost assuredly out the door this summer, a left-wing spot in the top-six will be wide open. If the Blue Jackets don’t fill that hole with a big fish (a big if), then I like Texier to put his name on it. (apr17)

8. Current Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill was signed to a two-year extension earlier this month, so his job for at least next season is secure. However, I’d think that new GM Steve Yzerman would immediately raise the bar for a former contender that has now missed the playoffs for three consecutive seasons.

The Wings have some nice pieces centering around Dylan Larkin, but Stevie Y will need to add more in the way of draft picks. With some cap space, Yzerman could even dip into the free agent pool as early as this summer. Optimism abound in the Motor City.

9. Your Vezina Trophy finalists were announced on Saturday and they are Ben Bishop, Robin Lehner and Andrei Vasilevskiy. Bishop led the NHL with a .934 SV% and trailed only half-season starter Jordan Binnington with a 1.98 GAA.

In spite of those impressive ratios, you know that Vasilevskiy will receive a lot of first-place votes because he led the league with 39 wins, which had a lot to do with the team in front of him.

Hockey media hasn’t paid enough attention to Bishop’s season, perhaps because he plays in a non-traditional hockey market for a team that squeaked into the playoffs. Because of their goaltender, the Stars might be better than we think as they are on the verge of upsetting Nashville. (apr21)

10. James Neal was a healthy scratch for Game 5. As you might expect, he had no points in the previous four games. Neal has quite simply been a bust for the Flames since signing a five-year contract worth $5.75 million per season last summer. His 19 points in 63 games is his lowest point total in his 11-year NHL career and he doesn’t seem to fit into the Flames’ younger core going forward. Hopefully, you didn’t draft him hoping he’d play on the Flames’ top line. We could now be seeing why Nashville left him unprotected in the expansion draft.

11. The Flames have a major decision coming up with respect to their goaltending. The team’s ousting is by no means entirely on Mike Smith (his 188 saves were lead all playoff goalies at the time), but he was easily considered the biggest question mark for the Flames entering the series.

You’d have to think that the 37-year-old Smith won’t be returning and that the Flames would instead turn to a tandem with RFA David Rittich and a goalie that they find as a UFA (maybe they circle back to Smith?) There doesn’t appear to be anything waiting in the system, as the numbers for both Jon Gillies and Tyler Parsons don’t suggest that they’re NHL-ready. Maybe a trade? (apr20)

12. The metrics from Puck IQ don’t paint a very flattering picture of Drew Doughty’s 2018-19 season.

Was it his defense partner? That’s very possible, considering how much better Doughty has fared over the last two years when not playing with Derek Forbort. Was it the coaching staff and their systems? It may be, and we’ll have a better idea of this now that Todd McLellan is behind the bench. Was it just an off year? I don’t want to dismiss that, either.

I’m pretty comfortable saying that Doughty going from playing with Jake Muzzin to playing with Forbort had a massive impact on his performance. But does he have a better partner next year? We’ll see. (apr19)

13. As when all teams get eliminated from playoffs, we find out about all the injuries players were going through. Pittsburgh’s locker clean-out brought us that as Jared McCann informed us he was playing through a separated shoulder. Also, Brian Dumoulin was playing through a torn posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) in his knee.

We also got more rumours that Evgeni Malkin will be traded, which seems to be almost a rite of passage whenever the Penguins don’t win the Cup. That always overlooks the fact that even if the Penguins wanted to trade Malkin, he has a no-move clause. Honestly, these types of rumors exhaust me because there is never is a kernel of truth and people are just looking for clicks. I guess that’s just the online world we live in now. (apr19)

14. Tampa Bay also told us that Victor Hedman was not medically cleared for Games 3 and 4 after being so earlier in the series. It’s pretty obvious Hedman was nowhere near himself in Round 1. General manager Julien Brisebois also said there will be changes, but as I stated in my Ramblings yesterday, it’s just a reality of their cap situation rather than blowing up the roster.

Again, this roster is loaded top to bottom. It seems Brisebois understands that making significant changes would not be in the team’s best interest. It’s nice to see him take a measured approach.

BTW: Alex Killorn had a slight tear in his left knee’s MCL but will not require surgery. (apr19)

15. It was a rebound, or career year, in many ways for Patrick Kane. Not something easily predicted for a 30-year old on what was thought to be a declining team.

An early lesson I learned in fantasy sports is to always bet on talent. Originally, for me, this applied to relief pitchers in fantasy baseball, but it’s very much true in almost any sport; elite talent usually finds a way to be productive almost regardless of circumstance. This certainly isn’t always the case (see: Kopitar, Anze) and I would bet on a modest step back for Kane in 2019-20. All the same, doubting elite talent is a bet I do not often make. (apr16)

16. Something that caught my eye in Cam Metz’s Eastern Edge column a couple of days ago. He wrote about production against expected production from right wingers in the Atlantic division. One guy whose name stood out: Jason Pominville.

In 837 minutes of five-on-five ice time, Pominville posted 2.01 points per 60 minutes. Among the 252 forwards with at least 800 minutes, only 86 forwards managed at least two points per 60 minutes at 5v5. Pominville’s rate was the same as Brayden Schenn and Joe Pavelski. Pominville accomplished this despite playing only about a third of his ice time with Jack Eichel.

Going back three seasons, Pominville’s aggregate points/60 minutes at 5v5 (1.93) is the same as Gustav Nyquist, and higher than other wingers like Pavelski, Alex Radulov, Evander Kane, and Justin Williams.

Now, there is a lot more to hockey than just simply a points rate at five-on-five, but it’s clear that Pominville can still be productive in the NHL in a lesser role, and can do so even in a low-scoring environment. However, he turns 37 in November and it’s a wonder how much he does have left. I’ll be interested to see where he lands this summer. (apr18)

17. I’ve written about this before, but the 40-goal scoring Jake Guentzel is one of the few players who I believe can consistently live in the mid-to-high teens for conversion rate. It doesn’t hurt that he’s locked to Sidney Crosby at even-strength. I imagine he’ll finally take a full-time spot on the top power-play unit next fall as well. (apr17)

18. At the outset of the season, I envisioned a transition year for the Ducks. Guys like Ryan Kesler and Corey Perry would still be productive, but likely on the third or fourth lines, while guys like Sam Steel, Troy Terry, and Max Comtois would step up and lead the next wave of the Ducks core.

That wasn’t entirely the case.

Steel’s first foray in the NHL saw three points and 17 shots on goal through 13 games, averaging under 15 minutes a game. We have to think back to the state of the Ducks in October, though: Ryan Getzlaf missed two weeks due to injury, Ondrej Kase was not in the lineup due to his own injury, and Perry was injured as well. With guys like Rickard Rakell, Jakob Silfverberg, and Andrew Cogliano in the top-6, Steel was playing on the third and fourth line most nights with guys who were either unproven or without a lot of offensive skill. He wasn’t exactly put into a position to succeed, and he, Isac Lundestrom, and Terry were eventually sent down either for the rest of the season, or until after the trade deadline.

In all, the underlying numbers weren’t great for Steel but I wonder how much of that is Anaheim being a disaster most of the season. Those numbers were really bad in October, but after his recall at the end of February, he had very strong shot share numbers for the remaining games he dressed. It really was a tale of two seasons for Steel.

I’m still a believer in his talent and think he can be a good second-line center in the NHL. I thought that might start in 2018-19 but clearly he needed another year of to get up to speed. I think my mistake was my own beliefs in a player’s potential clouded what I should have seen as a clear development year. It’s a mistake I’m certain I’ll make again. (apr16)

19. Well it’s done. A week ago I didn’t expect this to happen. Not even when I had my ‘interview’ with Nikita Gusev’s agent a couple of weeks ago. I thought this would come in the form of a signing in late June, or an announcement in August. But things have moved quickly over the last week and Vegas has actually signed Gusev to a one-year entry-level contract.

The 26-year-old has dominated the KHL – and the international stage – for a couple of years now, and he’s ready to step into the lineup right away. Not only that, but he is actually eligible to play, since he wasn’t signed as an unrestricted free agent. Whenever he does, he could have an Artemi Panarin-type of impact. Vegas already has their first two lines in stone (or ‘Stone’, if you will): (apr15)

20. Gusev wasn’t the only Russian star to sign with an NHL playoff team. Columbus signed Vladislav Gavrikov, a defenseman who played with Gusev on SKA St. Petersburg. There were also questions as to whether or not Gavrikov would sign, too. Funny enough, the Jackets have two defensemen hurt and had to actually dress Adam Clendening in Games 3 and 4 of Round 1. Gavrikov is 23 and his offensive upside is minimal (mid-30s) but he’s close to a sure thing when it comes to making it into the NHL. At least, as much as one can be a sure thing. (apr15)

21. In early December, I traded Vince Dunn for Nazem Kadri in my keeper league. At the time, I wanted the depth forward as it would keep me in the hunt. I also wanted a playoff guy and Kadri was a lock for the playoffs, whereas clearly Dunn and his St. Louis Blues were, uh…done. They were bottom dwellers at the time. And as a bonus, Kadri had a great second half last year and although that was due to playing with Mitch Marner (which wasn’t going to happen again this year), I figured there would still be an uptick.

Well, that entire transaction has derailed and I feel like I gave up a good quality young defenseman for nothing. With Kadri’s track record of dirty hits, he’s going to miss time and likely lots of it. So, as a playoff asset, he’s done. And he never had that second-half uptick so he really didn’t help the bottom of my roster very much, either. (apr15)
