HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Scott McKenzie, the singer-songwriter best known for his association with John Phillips and the 1967 Summer of Love anthem “San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair),” the sonic tract that called 1000s of young people to California.
Phillips (who played on the track with The Wrecking Crew) wrote the song to appease authorities concerned that hippies would overrun the Bay Area for the Monterey Pop Festival. Peace and love prevailed. The song has been used in several films and was a theme for the Prague Spring Czech uprising in 1968. That same year, McKenzie’s next Top 40 hit “Like an Old Time Movie” (also written and played by Phillips) segued with McKenzie writing “What About Me” for Anne Murray (her first hit single).
Like many artists circa 1960, McKenzie morphed out of doo-wop and became a folkie, joining the New York folk scene that beget The Mamas & The Papas. Phillips initially invited McKenzie to join that group but he declined, saying he didn’t want “the pressure.” Years later McKenzie joined a road version of The Mamas & The Papas in 1986. Concurrently, the Phillips-McKenzie team joined Mike Love and Terry Melcher to create the huge Beach Boys hit “Kokomo.”
The evergreen “San Francisco” remains McKenzie’s best-known work (he passed from Guillain-Barre syndrome in 2010). Periodically I dabbled with the song, dirty demo-ing a grunge-y Iggy Pop-like update: https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/san-francisco-be-sure-to-wear-flowers-in-your-hair-demo-remastered-2020
HB and RIP Scott.

OLD (2021) Grade: C-
Definitely had some some interesting story, but overall to inconsistent. A few dud scenes & the ending wasn't that great. Had potential. Something about the dialogue bother me, some characters just talked flat.

♫ Good Vibrations ♫ (Redux)
What I really wanted to play tonight was … well, never mind.  I decided on this instead.  ‘Nuff said. I was never a huge fan of the Beach Boys in my youth, generally preferring something a bit deeper, something with soul or meaning.  But, that’s not to say I didn’t listen to them and have most of their more popular songs committed to memory. According to Beach Boys co-founder, Brian Wilson … “My…

Bert Savoy is unique among the vaudeville female impersonators because he was one of the few to be openly gay. While Julian Eltinge's drag was based on grace, beauty and removing all hints of masculinity, Savoy's drag was loud and bawdy and frequently made wink-wink references to his maleness. He is frequently called one of the first truly camp performers out there.
Appearing alongside his stage partner Jay Brennan, Savoy played "the red-haired harlot," and often centered jokes around his fictional roommate, Margie. He was well-known for his snappy catch phrases like "You don't know the half of it, darling," and "You must come over," which Mae West turned into her iconic, "Why don't you come up and see me some time?"
Tumblr media
In spite of his open homosexuality, Savoy was married to a woman in private. In 1921, a massive scandal erupted when his wife, Mrs. Anna Clamper McKenzie, sued him for divorce, claiming that on several occasions, he has beaten her and given her black eyes. So maybe don't go adding Bert Savoy to your list of early gay heroes.
His outrageous life came to an abrupt end on June 26, 1923 when he and fellow actor Jack Vincent were killed during an electrical storm on the beach at Fire Island. It may very well be apocryphal, but Burt Savoy went down in history exclaiming, "Mercy, ain't miss God cutting up something awful?" and then being struck by lightning.

teen beach movie where mckenzie is zuko who spent and brady is sokka and big poppa (mckenzies grandfather) is iroh
iroh is sokka, katara, hakoda, bato's and kya's neighbour (yes they are in a polycule)
lu ten is alive but is in college going for a law degree
zuko goes to spend the summer with his uncle before he too goes for his law degree (that he really wants to go, yes uncle, he does want to become a lawyer, is not just going to please his father)
he meets sokka because him n iroh are good friends, and the two become fast friends (just friends. they arent. in love or anything. shut up uncle)
sokka n iroh are obsessed with this bad musical rendition of love amongst the dragons which zuko HATES so much
as the summer begins to end, zuko prepares to leave, packing his bags and distancing himself from sokka so it doesn't hurt as much when he doesn't see him for a while
sokka, wanting to see his love-- crush- friend, insists on zuko going for riding the ocean waves with him one last time, zuko agrees-
they both end up riding through the wave and end up in the bad musical rendition of love amongst the dragons
the cast is the ember island players
