So...
Was anyone going to tell me Joey Batey could go completely feral with a sword, or was I supposed to find out on my own?!
Also, anyone else here suddenly wants The Witcher to include a "fantasy sequence" where Jaskier is narrating some of his and Geralt's adventures, and there's a bit where Geralt is injured, so Jaskier just ends up grabbing one of his swords and either heroically defeating the monster himself, or fighting back against a small army?
And we're, like, visually shown that epic fight until someone calls bullshit, and they show that either the monster was already about to drop dead (and fell to the floor before Jaskier had the chance to actually do anything with the sword), or there was a single guy left, and Jaskier just knocked him out from behind or something.
I mean having a guy that's freaking trained in fencing, kick boxing, medieval sword fighting, and stage combat (according to IMDb) on a fantasy show like "The Witcher", with all those awesome fight choreographers, and not having him show off those fighting skills at least once feels like such a waste!
I get that Jaskier can't fight like that, but COME ON! He'd totally be able to imagine it!
It's the whole point of poetry, damnit! It doesn't have to be real!
And I've just discovered that archers have a nasty habit of thinking he makes a good target.

hello i was wondering if you had any favorite batman comics or ones you'd reccomend for someone who wants to read more batman or know any good reclists, ty hope you have a good one^_^
hiiiii hi! yes, absolutely!
my favorite batman comic of all time is batman: ego, which is collected here with some other darwyn cooke batman work!
i'd also highly recommend scott snyder's 2011 batman run and the companion batman and robin run -- though keep in mind that damian's death happens in a different run and batman and robin explores the aftermath of it.
i'm currently rereading no man's land, which is a really influential and important piece of gotham city lore in general that explores the aftermath of a series of events (catyclysm and contagion, but also knightfall!) that lead the US government to declare gotham city condemned and separate from the united states: nobody gets in, nobody gets out. (if you want to know what led here, bruce briefly mentions knightfall, contagion, and catyclysm. i'd say knightfall is pretty important, but these are really only "mandatory" if you want to know the exact circumstances that led to no man's land).
i don't keep up with too many modern comics, but batman: failsafe (which starts here and ends at issue 130) is pretty okay. i mostly liked the zurr-en-arrh backup stories. tynion's detcom run is also pretty good. i enjoyed some pieces of batman: urban legends, but it's an anthology series, so not everything is gonna be to your taste.
all of those have to some degree focused on bruce-as-batman, which makes sense, because he's batman most of the time, but two dick-as-batman recommendations i have are the 2009 morrison batman and robin run and batman: the black mirror, which is a horror comic with a lot of gore, if you're not into that.
dick-as-batman is directly on the heels of final crisis, where bruce, uh. Dies, but that's not really introductory material.
how about some villain stuff? scarecrow year one and face the face are two favorites, along with some previously mentioned stuff like knightfall, no man's land, black mirror, etc.
if you want to know more about the life and death of jason todd, a death in the family and under the red hood are the places to start. do not read red hood and the outlaws. everyone who likes it is lying to you. it isn't good. red hood: lost days fills in some gaps about jason's time post-resurrection. dailyjasontodd has compiled a wonderful list of jason reading that i highly recommend!
i also like batman black and white (and its two sequels, the one from 2013 and the one from 2020. they're all anthology series) and batman: gotham knights (NOT the video game. the comic book).
batgirl 2000! also really fucking good! i forgot it the first time i wrote this post! whoops!
i also really recommend the batman unburied podcast, batman the animated series, the batman beyond tv show, and batman forever (which is a really stupid, awful movie. i love it deeply.)
i hope this helped and gave you some ideas on where to start! batman comics are an intimidating thing to get into, but these are some things i'd consider introductory. happy reading!! <3

Hi! If I wanted to get into nightwing/batman comics, where do I start? I first started getting into DC stuff with the young justice TV show but I’ve never really sat down and read a comic run. You seem like you know a lot about DC stuff so i figured you were a good person to ask :)
Hmm, I feel like both these characters have such long histories that some of the answer will be "it depends on what you want", so if you want to send a more specific message I can give you some more specific info :P
Otherwise just some general comics I like
Dick's arc from Robin to Nightwing takes place in The New Teen Titans (1980) which is also a great comic. That's a good place to start for him IMO. You also have a Nightwing solo title, Nightwing (1996). it starts very chuck dixony (derogatory) but does give you the intro to bludhaven and winds up setting the scene for dick's solo adventures for like, a decade.
Batman, I'm not sure whether you want more 'figuring out what he's like in comics' or character-driven stuff. Not very many of his stories have a ton of character development (due to the nature of stories that run forever). If you just google 'batman recommended reading', you'll generally get like the same comics recommended (Batman: Year One, long halloween, knightfall) so I'll try to do stuff that is usually left off that list.
I remember enjoying Englehart's brief run on Detective Comics, which was Detective Comics 469-476. It has some elements you'll recognize from BTAS and takes place chronologically when Dick is in college. Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight also has lots of early-Batman stories that I like better than Batman Year One :P There is Batman: Prey (which shows a re-told first appearance of Hugo Strange, who shows up in Englehart's run) and Batman: Venom (which I think is good for some showing Bruce's character). Batman: Prey is issues #11-15 of Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, and Batman: Venom is #16-20 of that same series.
If you have more specific info of what you're looking for, I might be able to give you more specific recs, but that's where I'd start based on what I know.

Kevin Conroy died.
If you don’t follow voice actors, Kevin Conroy played Batman and Bruce Wayne in Batman: The Animated Series, The New Batman Adventures, The Batman-Superman Movie: World’s Finest, Batman Beyond, Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, Justice League Action, The Killing Joke, the Arkham series of video games, and some other movies I know I missed.
You know his voice. He was vengeance. He was the night. He was, for many, including me, Batman.
* * *
Batman’s always been a part of my life. He—and I’m not talking about an actor here but the Real Batman—is still one of my heroes, and the Real Batman’s sense of justice and equity still informs mine. I doubt I’ll ever fire a gun. I’ll always try to extend an open hand instead of a closed fist. I’ll always think capes are a necessary fashion accessory.
My parents maintain that I recognized a cardboard standee of Michael Keaton’s Batman by name in 1989. I was two, maybe. Not much of a talker at that point. Batman ‘89 is the first movie I ever recall seeing on VHS. I got myself in trouble repeating some of the words I learned in that movie at a dinner party once. I still have a Polaroid of myself, my twin brother, and my sister as two Batmans and a Catwoman standing with the ‘89 Batmobile at an auto show that we went to specifically for that.
Then there was the 1949 Batman and Robin movie serial starring Robert Lowery and Johnny Duncan. We had two VHS tapes of that, and there must have been a third out there, because I first saw the ending when it was rereleased on DVD in 2005. Worth the wait? Not exactly, but for completion’s sake, it needed doing.
Let’s not forget Batman ‘66. Dad was almost definitely the one who got us watching those. He can still tell you the date of the premiere, and what date he saw the real Batman and Robin with the Batmobile at Walt Whitman Mall on Long Island. I watched that show with a religious zeal—I never saw the strings until watching it on Blu-ray. Whether that’s due to taping the show off a TV re-run or because I was a True Believer, I’ll never know.
A copy of the children’s novelization of Knightfall wound up in my hands as part of a birthday party goody bag.
The comics, of course; I recall nearly my first comic ever being an early issue of the Contagion crossover, and it scaring the pants off me. Chuck Dixon, Larry Hama, Ed Brubaker, Grant Morrison, not to mention the countless artists like Neal Adams, Scott McDaniel, Alex Toth…
***
But Batman: The Animated Series debuted on Fox Kids on September 5, 1992, airing the first part of “The Cat and the Claw,” a two-part episode featuring Adrienne Barbeau as Catwoman, Kate Mulgrew as Red Claw, and, of course, Kevin Conroy as Batman. This was, and is, my Batman.
Kevin always played his Batman as trying to save everyone, especially his villains. Mercy was as much a hallmark of his character as gadgets, martial arts, and Batarangs. Villains like Two-Face, Mr. Freeze, Ventriloquist, and Catwoman—especially Catwoman—he was always trying to bring over to the side of the angels. Even no-namers like Sid the Squid got the benefit of the doubt.
Kevin seemed to be that way in real life as well—I only got to know about him indirectly, through interviews and secondhand stories. He served food to NYC first responders after 9/11, and rekindled their spirits by playing Batman for them. He seemed genuinely gracious to be known as Batman and gave everyone their moment with the Man himself.
One of the most powerful things he ever did was to come out as gay. He even wrote a comic about how being in the closet informed his performance as Batman and Bruce Wayne—about fear, duality, loneliness, rage—and being able to do something positive with it. More than any other actor, Kevin Conroy embodied Batman. He was dealt a tough hand, pushed through it, and used his position to help others.
“Finding Batman” was written by Kevin Conroy, drawn and colored by J. Bone, lettered by Aditya Bidikar, and edited by Arianna Turturro and Jessica Chen. It was published by DC Comics in DC Pride 2022, available in print and digitally. It’s worth your time.
Kevin, I’ll miss you. Thanks for everything.

Chapter By Chapter> Batman: Knightfall part 2 chapter 6
BW Media Spotlight's Chapter By Chapter> Batman: Knightfall part 2 chapter 6
Chapter By Chapter (usually) features me reading one chapter of the selected book at a time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club. PART 2: KNIGHTQUEST Last time…

I was reading some of your Killer Croc stories and Batman Villain Countdown posts from a long time ago, and they made me wanna ask: what are some old, obscure Batman Villains you'd like to see modernized or write for?
There are actually quite a few villains along those lines, to be quite honest. For example, I'm actually planning a possible story in the future (non-kink-related) that would feature reimaginings of the obscure villains Sterling Silversmith and Dr. Death. In terms of other characters from the comics who are fairly obscure, two immediately come to mind: the Tally Man, and the Cavalier. The Cavalier still makes sporadic appearances in comics to this day, but they're very scattered and usually quite minor, with no real continuity to them. I'd like to see the character make a proper comeback. I think the key to that is using him in some other form of media; I don't know how he'd do in a movie, but I think putting him in a big role in a video game would be a good idea, since he'd make a great boss battle. He's made some minor appearances on TV, so maybe a major role on a TV show would help, too. If I were to write for the character, I'm not sure which version of him I'd be more geared towards, but I'd love to handle him sometime. As for Tally Man, he actually is a villain who has sort of been forgotten nowadays with no major appearances worth noting. Which is weird, because he's worked with characters like Two-Face and Black Mask, and has appeared in some big stories, like the Knightfall saga. I'd like to see somebody reimagine and bring back the character. I'm not sure what I'd do with him, but I'd like to write for him if I can figure out an idea. I'd also like to see a reimagining of one of the 60s Batman TV Show villains, the Bookworm. I've always felt that character has a lot of potential to be reimagined for a modern audience. I have a few different ideas for how I could make that happen, but nothing super strong, yet. Hopefully someday he'll get his due, one way or another.

My guest this week is comedian Danny Rathbun! Do you need prior knowledge to enjoy The Dark Knight Returns? How great are the Green Arrow comics? What does DC do that Marvel doesn't? What's the problem with DC's Crises? What happened in a comic book that confused Brett? How is Secret Invasion different from the TV show (which hasn't aired yet but some stuff we know)? What Secret Invasion books did Brett think he didn't really need to read to get the story? Is it hard to keep up with current comics? Why don't they do footnotes anymore? What's confusing about Scott Summers' family tree? What happened to the shelf in Danny's house that had Batman comics on it? What did Danny not like about Batman Cult? Which Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics are good? What happened in the first episode of Batman Beyond? Are we closer to a live action Batman Beyond movie? Who did Brett and Danny think should be in the movie? Why does Brett think we may get a live action Batman Beyond movie? Where do you start with Hellboy? What is The Goon? What are all the TV versions of The Tick? Which one did Brett do background work on? Why doesn't Danny like the New Gods? What comic book series did Brett read from the beginning? Which version of Peter Parker does Brett prefer? Are old comics hard to read?

There are only 2 hours and 45 minutes left in 2022 as I type this where I live and I want to take a moment to he thankful for everything this year has offered. I got to have one of the most laid back weeks I’ve ever spent at a beach at the end of August when my mom, sister, step-dad and I flew down to Holden Beach and it was nice to be able to just chill for a while. Hell, I was able to finish my Voltron fanfic that I started back in 2020 while there! I’ve also been able to really get down to my plan of writing the various fics I have in my head and I expect to continue that in the new year.
It was also a good year for me in terms of video games. I beat the masterpiece that is Elden Ring twice and it’s without a doubt my Game of the Year. I was also able to get a PS5 (even though I was planning on waiting until they fixed some of the bigger issues with the system) and I’ve been enjoying Dad of Boy Ragnarok. The third (and by far BEST) expansion for Guild Wars 2 came out at the start of the year and the wait to finally go back to Cantha was totally worth it.
Some of the best movies I’ve seen in a while came out and even though a good majority of the fans whined, bitched and complained about how “THE MOVIE SUCKS, IT BROKE THE CHARACTERS, BLAH BLAH BLAH”, I THROUGHLY enjoyed all of the MCU films and TV shows that came out this year (special mention to Thor Love & Thunder for being more of what made the third Thor film a piece of perfection, go ahead and @ me you whiny fuckers) and I really hope we haven’t seen the last of the Scarlet Witch (THE MOST BADASS AND BROKEN AVENGER OF ALL) and that some day they’ll FINALLY put Wiccan and Hulkling into the MCU so the gay husbands can be in something OTHER THAN THE COMICS ALREADY!!! Let Wanda be with her gay and bi son already Kevin Feige you heartless bastard Q_Q
We also lost one of the greatest shows on television at the end of April due to a bunch of stupid mother fuckers that didn’t want to spend the money to let them finish the series in their own terms…I’m talking of course about Legends of Tomorrow, the most batshit crazy show ever that ended on a FUCKING CLIFFHANGER ALL BECAUSE THE HIGHER UPS AT WB DIDN’T WANT TO RENEW THE LEASE ON THE WAVERIDER STUDIO!!!!!!! Give them a final season PLEASE!!!!!
And lastly, we lost some phenomenal stars this year. Jason David Frank, the greatest Power Ranger of all time killed himself at the end of last month and earlier the same month, Batman himself Kevin Conroy died/pulled his own Knightfall Protocol. Thankfully, he was able to be the Batman one final time for Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League and FUCK is that game gonna hit extra hard when it comes out.
All in all, this was a good year with some shitty moments, but I’m glad it happened. See y’all in the new year.
