Estraven is basically the Spock of The Left Hand of Darkness in that both characters are meant to be viewed as austere and stoic by the audience but are actually so fucking wild by the standards of their home cultures.

Like yes Estraven is polite and reserved but he also broke every Karhidish taboo. Every single one of them. There’s a reason he’s called Estraven the Traitor. By Karhidish standards, he is the chainsmoking tattooed guy with a loud motorcycle that your mom warns you to stay away from.

There's an Ursula Le Guin short story about two guys who try the same alchemy at the same apartment but centuries apart (if I remember right? I think this is what happens to get them in the same place. Either way its alchemy) and they become best friends and keep meeting like this, sometimes in medieval England sometimes in contemporary England and they become super close best friends who sometimes visit each other's time periods and have fun. They also meet a woman from the future doing the same thing eventually who begins to hang out too. It DID seems like she was setting up that they were gonna be a weird throuple but disappointingly no. I swear it would've been an A+ from me if they were a throuple

Well I don't me or my icon doing alchemy so we'll have to rely on anime-joke levels of bad cooking probably
