LO RANT:
Not everything is Demeter’s fault or even tied to Demeter, quit using her as a scapegoat for everything just because you don’t like her and can’t accept the fact that your faves are fucking up everything for themselves because they’re way too underdeveloped emotionally to handle decisions. Has anyone ever thought about that? Both Persephone and Hades need a lot of therapy and neither of them are allowing themselves to get it because they are so far up each other’s asses. You cannot form a healthy relationship when you’re both traumatized and have bad communication skills, you can’t necessarily heal someone else when you’re just as broken as they are and that’s what frustrates me about Persephone and Hades as a whole. We all remember Minthe and Hades right? We all agree that they were horrible for each other and they’re only bringing the worst of one another by being together and we see now that apart they’re doing better (honestly not really Hades but Minthe mainly). So how come when it comes to Persephone and Hades being lumped into one being because of their shared trauma being overlooked? I find it funny how everyone was disapproving of their relationship and how they said it was toxic that they were together yet y’all still ship Persades. They are bringing the absolute worst out of each other, they aren’t in a state of healing, they’re both stressed, trying to rush their relationship, not wanting to get to know each other, and hiding their concern for the other ones sake. When has this ever been healthy? Why would we categorize such a draining situation as healthy. Bottom line is it’s extremely hypocritical to say that Minthe and Hades’ relationship is toxic yet turn a blind eye to Persephone and Hades.
Anyways, am I the only one not enjoying the way Morpheus is drawn? I really don’t like how instead of being androgynous or whatever Rachel was going for she looks like she’s slowly morphing into how the men of LO are drawn and I absolutely hate that so much. I hate that she doesn’t have decent panels or different styles, I hate how her design feels so mean and it’s almost borderline transphobic sometimes. I’m not asking her to be a big booby goddess with no waist by the way (Rachel please that’s not what I mean by this, spare my child) I’m just saying that I don’t like how she’s being drawn more masculine for some reason.. Maybe I am just being nit-picky but it’s just been on my mind and I recently saw the panels which included her and I just felt so angry. Why did her entire face change? Her face used to be more rounder and softer yet in the newer chapters it’s a lot more long and chiseled. Again, maybe I’m just tripping balls but it just feels a little mean and she deserves a better design with actual thought and care put into.
Anyways, I believe that’s all I really wanted to say but again I will restate that I’m so sick and tired of the fans trying to drag Demeter in every single situation. Like please figure out another character to call on, y’all don’t even do this with Zeus and I thought everyone hated Zeus because he rightfully banished Persephone’s ass for years. And actually I wanna say that it’s extremely sexist the way that this shit is going down because how the fuck is Demeter still getting shit yet there’s dozens of men in LO who’ve done way worst. You guys barely even get on Apollo like you do with Demeter and we all know what he is, neither do you do to Kronos and he traumatized your favorite character. I’m gonna need you guys to distribute as much hatred as you feel for the female characters to the male characters because it’s honestly embarrassing and just showing what kind of person you truly are. Especially the whole Leuce situation, again she literally did nothing that entire chapter yet everyone was trying to drag her through the dirt. Focus on your moral compass and do better please, it’s getting tiring.

Reread the nightmare Drabble and UGH! One of my favorite aspect of Quinn’s character is his relationship with expectation (I.e. expecting to die, expecting Collins to be just as horrible as the crew initially, etc) and it’s heartbreaking to think that he knew what the captain would do but figured it was a one off thing until he is quite literally given to the rest of the crew. The whumperflies! 🦋 thank you for your writing btw, you have a great way of making characters with a lot of both breadth and depth
If he expects the worst then he can never be disappointed!!
He started off truly believing that he would be put to death with the rest of the crew and fully accepting that fate. The cage was what convinced him that his suffering wouldn't be so short-lived. Why would they go to the trouble of constructing a cage for him if they didn't intend to keep him? But he still thought he would be executed sooner rather than later. And then the Captain took him, and then Percy, and then he was given to the crew, and then the Captain dragged him out of the cage the very next day and shoved him under his desk, his hands tied to his thighs and his mouth forced open while the Captain did his work- that was when he realized that this wasn't going to stop.
It became just one horrific nightmare after another, things so awful he couldn't have predicted them if he tried, so he quickly tempered his expectations. Expecting to be fed, or given water, or medical attention, or the smallest gesture of kindness, that was all foolish and he let any and all expectations of being treated as a human being fall away.
Instead, he took in all the pain and degradation and humiliation to the best of his ability, knowing that eventually, his body would simply give out some day and he would die with only the few shreds of himself that he'd managed to hold onto.
That was literally the only thing he could cling to- until Collins finally went and blew all those expectations to hell ☺️

You're finally adding your Patrick ship tag! Is there a reason why you didn't? Or maybe you did and I just missed it?
Yeah I'm finally adding the tag onto gifsets. Enough people guessed who the tag was for already so I thought I might as well, lol! I hesitated for a very long time because 1) he was on-and-off the F/O list for a long time until I finally built a version of him in my head that I tolerate, but god it was such... a rollercoaster getting to this point and 2) I don't ship entirely with the movie version of him because there's such a different version of him in my head, that it felt weird adding his ship tag onto gifsets. like. him sitting at a dinner table in a gifset, I'll look at him and think "there's a version of you in my head that I am so heavily involved with, but it isn't You." but hey. christian bale is so pretty.......... and whatever. the version in my head looks like christian bale too. so why not. it's all fiction and nothing is real and we're all gonna die, nothing in life matters :)
It's two months later and I've finally decided he's gonna stay on the F/O list even if he isn't really a... romantic F/O. I mean, he is? But he's not? But he is. But he's not. He's my boyfriend-who's-not-my-boyfriend. He's my serial killer bodyguard. He's my pathetic boytoy I drag around on a leash and if anybody is mean to me I just go "sic 'em, boy" take off his collar and let him go hog wild, and then I give him a treat for being my good dog.
In all honesty the reason why I'm shipping with him is because I need to rewire my brain into believing my F/Os love me, even the villains. Before I went through [vaguely gesturing to the trauma of 2023] a whole year of not being able to self ship without thinking any and all F/Os would hurt me, I was able to self ship with villains without any problems. Now it's insanely difficult to ship with anybody regardless if they're a villain or not, and I'm trying to feel like my old self again. This is where Pat comes in.
Somebody actually F/O recommended Patrick to me in my inbox a few months ago and they didn't tell me that he was a serial killer or a horrible person in general lmfao but they said... I'm paraphrasing here but they said something like "he is very intense, but he would be very protective and devoted to the one he loves" and that sounds like... something I need to get back into the habit of believing: all F/Os are protective and loving, they're not gonna be abusive towards me even if they're abusive villains themselves. Then my friend said "oh that's one of my favorite movies!" and sent me funny meme videos of Pat where he wasn't killing anybody, he was just. sweating profusely over business cards and crying hysterically in a phone booth. and I thought "wow I'm kind of in love with him, this is the most pathetic man I've ever seen in my life" and tbh if you know me long enough, you'll know a fun fact about me, I see a beautiful man sobbing his eyes out and that's it for me. it's over. I am so smitten for a pretty man who's shedding an unnecessary amount of tears. The more pathetic, the better. So then we joked that he was my boyfriend even though I planned to never see the movie (I live at Super Weenie Hut Juniors, I can't handle horror). WELL. I kept coming up with self ship scenarios with him even tho I only knew him from the business card scene and his crying scenes. Curiosity got the best of me anyways and then I realized "hey, if I'm feeling really attached to a villain right now, and if I watch this movie and come up with self ship ideas with him... isn't that healing? In a way? Having a really terrible person find a way to change and become a better person and to love me? Building a version of him in my head and believing he'd love me; isn't that what I'm supposed to be doing with fiction?? This could be a good healing exercise for me"
So then I watched the movie -- AND MY GOD I HAVE NEVER WORKED SO HARD TO SELF SHIP WITH A CHARACTER LOL DUDE THIS GUY IS INSANE. On and off that F/O list every few hours. I have never been on such a rollercoaster of emotions with a character. "I love him - oh god I hate him. I love him! I hate him. Oh this part of the movie is making me laugh so hard I have tears in my eyes. Oh god this part of the movie is so disturbing we need to skip it, I won't even acknowledge it happens. Oh haha I love him. Oh I hate him." Back and forth back and forth. I know he's the American Psycho™ so he's gonna be quite intense. y'know. but this was also my first horror movie just in general and I was very on edge shakily gripping my friend's hand LOL. And then the end of the movie made me feel a lot better because - well I won't spoil it, but the end of the movie really really helped me feel better about it, and if it didn't end that way, then I don't know if I would have bothered trying to put him on the F/O list at all. But I am a stubborn bitch!!!!!!! I want to get better so bad and if shipping with this guy is gonna help me then damn it all he is GOING on that F/O list!!!!
So he's officially on the F/O list now (even if he isn't really a romantic kind of F/O, he's still Something dear to me). Woohoo 🥳🥳 I feel genuinely 100% safe and loved with him, even if it isn't the "canon" version of Pat, there's still a version of him built off of that and that feels like a big win for me considering my circumstances. He isn't a main F/O by any means so he likely won't be sticking around my head for very long, but wrow. I love him. and he loves meeee!!!! and if I keep working very very very hard maybe I can ship with TF characters again someday, bc god I miss them so bad

Luka Stands Strong
This was inspired by Liar's Luck by @artblockandfeverdreams since it really is a great AU. I was inspired to do my take on what Luka would do in a situation like that. Especially since the author has said that he does not know how he would have Luka being in this AU.
Luka is my favorite character and I think that he would definitely play a great part in an AU like that. I give full credit for the AU to @artblockandfeverdreams but the actual story is my own story that I came up with for Luka.
Luka was always said to be one of the best judges of character by his mom. He gave credit to his unique ability to listen to the heart songs of others. It was also why he never really disliked or hated anyone. Because when he would listen to their heart songs, he would know that they would not really be as bad as they appear.
He would listen to their hearts and would see what was inside. He would often see sadness, heartbreak, self-doubt, anger, and sometimes it was just general lashing out at the world because of their own pain. He really did believe that he would never be able to hate anyone.
So, imagine his own shock when he would find himself hating not one, but two people. And he would start hating them on the same day, which made it even rarer.
The first person was a girl from his sister's class, Lila Rossi. Now, he usually tries to give all of Juleka's classmates a chance since he wanted to be able to get along with his sister's friends. He would even give Chloe a chance if he ever got to meet her. That was just how he was.
But when it came to Lila, Luka thought that he would get sick just from being near her. Her heart song was horrible. It was not even a song. It was the worst type of noise ever. Like a dying cat that was using the last of its strength to drag its claws down a chalkboard. He got a headache from just being near her for only a few seconds.
And if it was not her heart "song" that was giving him a headache, it was her non-stop talking. She would just not shut up. And all she would talk about was herself. How she was best friends with Lady Luck, how she did so many charities, how she traveled the world, how she met so many celebrities, how she was related to so many famous people. Luka was going to rip his own ears off if she did not stop talking. It was really driving him crazy. It made him wonder how his sister and her class actually like the girl when she literally never stops talking about herself.
Not to mention that everything she says can be either proven false or just not proven at all with the lack of evidence. The moment he heard some of her stories, he decided to look them up since a lot of them seemed to be very hard to believe. And he turned out to be right to do so. Since it made him find out that the girl was a pathological liar. Every story she told could be proven false or just have no proof of it being true or not.
Such as an interview that Jagged Stone did a few months ago where he specifically said that he has had Fang, his crocodile, for about twenty years. And before that, his only pet was a great dane. No kitten or cat was mentioned at all. Prince Ali also has his own charity website so that people can donate online to any of his charities. It also has a list of all his charities as well as a list of individual people that have helped him in the past. There was no go-green charity nor a Lila Rossi on any of his lists. Clara Nightingale also makes sure to credit any and all choreographers when she posts a music video or even just a dancing video on her social media. Never once was Lila mentioned. And since Clara is known as being one of the kindest celebrities in the world, so she would never steal dance moves.
Luka also thought that the noise in her heart was perfect for her with how she was acting. Not only was she a pathological liar, but she was also someone that could definitely be sued for sexual harassment with how she treats both him and Adrien. Not to mention how she constantly tried to latch onto his arm even when she was supposedly dating Adrien. Not that her so-called boyfriend even looked to want to be near her. He looked more like he was being held hostage. Every time she was near him, his face would be screaming "Someone get this psycho away from me!"
He tried to bring it up that her constant clinging to him and her being so close to him made him uncomfortable. But, he was just brushed aside. They all told him that she was just being affectionate and nice. It made Luka realize that the entire class, other than Adrien, seemed like they were under a spell. They really needed to learn what Google was.
Of course, she was not the only one he learned that he was capable of hating that day. After his mom had been akumatized into Captain Hardrock, he had met, and instantly regretted meeting, Lady Luck.
Her song was just as horrible as Rossi's. He did not even try to listen to it for more than a second since he already had one headache that day from Lila's non-stop talking.
Sure, he had heard of Lady Luck and had seen her on the news, but this was his first time actually meeting her. And he definitely was not impressed. Cat Walker did most of the work while Lady Luck seemed more focused on keeping all the attention on her at all times. And not in a way to distract an akuma, but in a way where she wants to be admired and treated like a celebrity.
She certainly did try and make herself look like the powerful leader even when Luka could plainly see that Cat Walker was doing almost all the work. And he honestly thought that if Cat Walker did more things on his own instead of letting himself be bossed around by Lady Luck, he would be an even better hero. Unfortunately, he was once again alone with his thoughts since the others all obviously loved Lady Luck.
Luka really could not believe that he was the only one seeing it. It was so obvious. Lady Luck was obviously not a hero to do good. She was clearly only fighting akumas to make herself look good, to make herself look powerful, and to basically gain followers and worshippers.
But, then came what had made him so mad that he nearly broke his guitar in half in anger. After his mom had been de-akumatized, Lady luck actually scolded her for letting Hawkmoth get to her and akumatize her. He stood there in shock as the so-called hero actually said that his mom needed to be the bigger person and take responsibility for everything she did as Captain Hardrock. Something he definitely hated since all the damage was fixed and it was not like akumas even remember anything that they have done. He glared at the "hero" as she basically was guilting his mom. She even went as far as to say that she needed to apologize to the officer that angered her.
If Luka was not angry before, he definitely was now. Raincomprix should be the one scolded, not his mother. The man had gone way too far with his stupid one-sided feud with his mother. Not to mention those ridiculous tickets that he was giving his mother. A ticket because he couldn't sleep? A ticket for him getting seasick? That man was a menace, not a police officer. And the fact that this so-called hero was saying that his mom was the one that needed to apologize infuriated him. And looking at the others, he was horrified to see that they all agreed with what Lady Luck was saying. He knew that they had all been akumatized before, except for Adrien, so he guessed that they all got the same speech.
He was lucky to not get akumatized. But, it was when he actually was akumatized that he could not keep silent.
Bob Roth and his son XY had stolen Kitty Section's music with a fake contest to "discover the next up-and-coming artist." But, that was just a lie so that XY could steal the "winner's" music. And they stole Kitty Section's song, costumes, and basically their entire performance.
But, that was not what had gotten him akumatized. What had happened was that he and Juleka had gone to confront Bob Roth and XY about what they had done. Luka was already mad because Rose and Juleka had stayed up all night to make the costumes for their performance. Marinette had designed them for the band, but she was too busy being Lila's slave/best friend to actually make the outfits.
The two of them had the gall to lie to their faces about how XY came up with everything. Juleka, for once, spoke up as she told them that since they had a time-stamped video of their own performance, they could easily prove that XY had stolen their music. That was when Bob threatened Juleka about what his powerful lawyers could do to her if she tried that. That was what got Luka akumatized into Silencer.
The next thing that he remembered was opening his eyes and seeing Cat Walker in front of him. Juleka had basically tackled him with a hug after he was no longer a villain. But, Lady Luck approached him as he got up. He used all his willpower not to glare at her as soon as her horrible heart "song" filled his ears again.
"You should not have let Hawkmoth get to you like that," she once again started her toxic speech. "You need to be positive. After all, I know not everyone can be a hero like me. So, you need to learn to be the bigger person. You caused a lot of harm and destruction while you were a villain. And you were one of the worst villains, yet, because you were able to take our voices."
Luka raised an eyebrow. That had been his power? He liked that. If only he still had it so that he did not have to listen to this horrible excuse for a hero scolding him like a child. Her "being the bigger person" speech was promoting toxic behavior. It was not healthy for people to try and be positive all the time.
"You might need more than just community service," Lady Luck continued. "Maybe you could get off lighter once you apologize to poor XY and Mr.Roth. You need to..."
"No," Luka could not keep silent anymore.
"Excuse me," Lady Luck glared at him.
"I said, no," Luka glared at her. "As if I would ever apologize to those like XY and Bob Roth. You call yourself a hero and yet you are supporting two thieves that have the gall to pray on the dreams of others just to get their next big hit."
"You need to be the bigger..." Lady Luck tried again.
"You can not call yourself a hero when you are actually saying that I should ignore that our hard work was stolen," Luka's fists clenched. "My sister and her girlfriend stayed up ALL NIGHT to work on the costumes for our music video. We rehearsed our song for hours before we actually recorded ourselves. And Rose and I had worked for weeks to even get the song written before that fake contest was even announced. I will not stand here and let you spit on all our hard work just because you are promoting such toxic behavior."
"How dare you," Lady Luck glared back at him. "I actually know what I am talking about. I am the wielder of the miraculous of creation. I am a hero and you are just a..."
"I am a human being," Luka interrupted her again. "A human being that was wronged. And just that, but I am a big brother that will NEVER apologize to someone that would go as far as to THREATEN a teenage girl just because she said that we had proof of them being thieves. I don't care if it got me akumatized because if anyone deserves to have an akuma chase after them, it would be those that see nothing wrong with stealing and threatening teenagers."
"Luka," Juleka was both touched and shocked.
"You can scold me all you want, but that will change nothing," Luka said. "You call yourself a hero, but all I see is someone that knows nothing about how to treat actual good people when they have been wronged."
Lady Luck was completely shocked and furious. This civilian that looked like he dressed out of the trash, in her opinion, had the nerve to talk to her like that. He did not have the right. She was Lady Luck, the hero of Paris. She deserved nothing other than the respect, love, and adoration of everyone around her. They needed to bow at her feet and see her as the queen that she is. And this nobody had no right to talk to her like that.
She was trying to calm herself down so that she did not lose her temper and ruin her mask as the kind and amazing hero. But, Luka just left before she could say anything else. Juleka quickly left with her brother.
And the entire thing was caught on live camera by one of the camera people that got back into the studio after he saw the magical ladybugs of the miraculous cure. And he was definitely shocked by what he was seeing. So, he turned the camera that had never been turned off during the attack to the scene in front of him.
The entire thing went viral pretty much in an hour. All of Paris could not believe what they were seeing. Alya Cesaire's Ladyblog was also blowing up as she was given interviews by Juleka and Anarka about how both of them were proud of Luka for standing up for what he knew was right. Anarka even added joined in her son's attitude and said that she would also not be apologizing to an officer as corrupt as Raincomprix when he was the one in the wrong.
While Marinette was trying to comfort her best friend, since Lila was also Lady Luck's friend, Adrien was silently very happy. He had been forced by Lila into being her boyfriend, so he could not be happier about what was happening.
Soon, Luka was asked by Nydia of Face To Face to interview him. Luka was not surprised by the request. After talking to his mom and Juleka, he agreed to it. He went onto the show to speak out once again.
Nydia sat across from him, professional as ever. As the interview started
"Thank you for coming, Mr.Couffaine," Nydia tells him.
"It's no problem at all," Luka says. "And you can call me Luka."
Nydia nodded in response. "I am sure that you know why you are here. All of Peris had been talking about your confrontation with Lady Luck. Something unexpected to happen with the hero of Paris."
"Well, that is just it, Nydia," Luka says. "I do not see her as a hero. Not since the moment I met her."
"That is certainly very shocking to hear," Nydia certainly had not been expecting that. "Why is that?"
"Because she does not act like one," Luka said. "I saw her in action when my mom was akumatized into Captain Hardrock. And what I saw was Cat Walker doing almost all the work while she just ordered him around. And even when she would fight, it was because she was the one that was attacked rather than her actually trying to fight the akuma."
"Luka, I am going to tell you right now that this could end badly for you," Nydia warned him. "Lady Luck is loved by a lot of Paris. You could be putting a target on your back by saying all of this."
"Well, those people need to see that not everyone has the same opinions as them," Luka says. "They may love her, but I do not. I will not shame them for their opinion even if I disagree with it."
"That is very mature for a teenager," Nydia commented.
"I know not everyone believes that and would always try and change the opinions of others to suit their own views, but I am not one of them," Luka said. "I am just saying that I saw. Cat Walker was fighting his hardest while Lady Luck seemed to take her time doing anything. I even saw her checking her reflection in one of the windows before trying to fight my mom."
"I must say that this is all a little hard to believe," Nydia tells Luka. "After all, Lady Luck has defeated many akumas since she first appeared."
"If she the one defeated them, or is she just taking credit for Cat Walker's hard work," Luka pointed out. "After all, Lady Luck is always talking about how she is creation while he is destruction, making public opinion more in her favor rather than his. So, people naturally then assume she is the one who defeated the akumas with Cat Walker as her side sick. I think Cat Walker would be a much better hero either without her or just with a better person using the ladybug miraculous."
"You have definitely caused quite the stir with all your opinions," Nydia says. "I recently checked out the Ladyblog and it has been blowing with both support for you as well as plenty of hatred as well."
"I knew from the moment that I let my opinions known that it was not going to be easy for me," Luka said. "But, I don't care."
"Being honest, I actually did find myself agreeing with a lot of the points you were making in your speech to her," Nydia says. "After all, I was akumatized, myself, because of the pressure put on me to have high ratings or I would be fired. And yet even with that, I was..."
"Told to be the bigger person and that you also needed to be the one to apologize," Luka finished for her.
"Exactly," Nydia said.
"That is the point that I am trying to make," Luka says. "Lady Luck's so-called advice is extremely toxic. She is shaming people for being akumatized, scolding them for having negative emotions, and telling them that they are the ones in the wrong for being upset. None of that is right. We are human beings. We can not just 'be positive' as she tried to tell me. We are allowed to feel sadness, anger, heartbreak, betrayal, and every other negative emotion out there. It is not wrong to be upset. It is not wrong to be sad. The only thing wrong is to be treated badly because some nutcase with an addiction to butterflies takes advantage of that. He is the only one actually at fault for what happens. The akumas do not even remember what they did. So, Lady Luck trying to say that we need to do community service and make up for what we did as akumas is wrong on so many levels."
"You really are making great points again, Luka," Nydia complimented him. "We are human and feeling every emotion, no matter what emotion it is, is part of being human. We can not stop ourselves from feeling."
"Let me say this as a message to everyone that has ever been akumatized and whoever might be akumatized in the future," Luka looked at the camera. "You are all allowed to feel the feelings that you did. If you were wronged, then you were allowed to feel negative about it. Don't let anything Lady Luck told you get to you. Each and every single one of you are human beings and could do nothing to stop Hawkmoth from taking advantage of your feelings. Lady Luck is not telling you to be positive, she is victim-blaming you. And that is not a good thing. You are victims and Hawkmoth is the real villain. And for all of you out there shaming people and punishing them for being akumatized, you are the ones that actually need to be taught a lesson for treating people that way."
"I do hope that your words actually reach them because I know that I will certainly take them to heart," Nydia says. "And in case Lady Luck is watching, do you have anything more to say to her?"
Luka glared at the camera.
"I hope Cat Walker takes those earrings from you and gives them to someone that will be a REAL hero," he said.
Adrien watched the TV, twisting the ring on his finger. He looked at the cat kwami eating his cheese next to him and also watching the TV.
"So, what do you think, kitten," Plagg asked his chosen.
"I think that I should never have let that girl force me to throw away Cat Noir just to be her version of what I should be," Adrien said. "And I will certainly be planning something for those earrings in the future."
"You have any idea who they should go to," Plagg asked him.
"I have a few thoughts," Adrien said as he looked at the blue-haired boy on the screen in front of him.

HI!!! Red Dwarf or the ask meme please! I'd much like to know your interpretations and thoughts! <3
Im throwing this under a cut because, boy, this is gonna be a long one
❤️Favorite character
This won't come as a surprise to many of any of you but, yeah, it's rimmer. I want to put him in situations, I want to take him out of situations, there's the full duality there. I relate to him a lot (which probably isn't a good sign lol) and I strongly believe you cannot have red dwarf without him (i mean, look at the ratings for season 7 even with the girlboss that is kochanski). His character itself has such good potential, the angst that comes with being a hologram, the touch-starved-ness (?), his entire childhood, his need for academic validation even 3 million years into the future when all who would care anyway are dead, I could go on forever.
👿Least favorite character
Don't do this to me man 😭 I don't even know if I have one?? At least not out of the main crew. There's no character that actually makes me vibrate with rage in a bad way... If I did really have a think it would probably be a one-off character that was only in one episode and never mentioned again. Oh! I've just remembered, some fanon interpretations of Toddhunter honestly made my skin crawl with how horrible he is, but obviously that's just fanon, and some fanon interpretations have him as honestly a really good meaning guy- looking at you, Work Thing ;)
💐Comfort character
If you can't guess at this point I honestly don't know what to say. It's rimmer, look I know I know, the comfort character who has had no comfort in his entire life/death but *slaps roof of car* this baby can fit so much projection! He's so varied, he's gay to me, he's bi to me, he's autistic to me, he has ptsd to me, he's yearning, he's in denial, he's just- HE *I am dragged away by a lone hand through the doorframe before I can continue*
😍Character you have the biggest crush on
Are you sensing a theme yet 😐 I'd say I don't wish to be perceived for this but let's be honest, my tags reveal all, and the majority of the fandom agrees. It's Rimmer. Again. Slightly outing myself as an x reader enjoyer here. *shaking him* I could fix him I really believe I could. (I'm glad you're the one who sent the ask, Lexie, we can both bond over being self shippers lol)
🤝Character you relate to the most
WHY IS IT ALWAYS RIMMER ON THIS ASK GAME PLEASE HELP😭😭😭 Hes a stickler for the rules (as long as they benefit him), he's probably autistic, he loves hammond organ music (very disappointed that he hates my main man Glenn Miller though 😔), he was an outcast for most of his childhood, he was bullied, he spirals at the slightest bad thing. I'm starting to really sense this isnt a good thing 😭 (I swear I'm doing okay I've got a good support system please don't worry)
🔥Character you think is overrated
I don't know?? 😭😭 I think all of red dwarf's characters really add to the material as a whole, and hey, it's not like this fandom is really big enough for overrating anything. I might say Duane Dibley, because yeah he's funny, Danny really performs well as that character but I don't really understand as to why he was so much of a fan favourite that they brought him back (for season 6 I think it was?) So if I had to say one character it would be Duane.
🧨Character you love to hate
*smacking my face against the doorframe* its rimmer again 😭😭😭 he's such a prick, especially in the early seasons man, I simultaneously want to look after him and throw him against a wall. I contain multitudes, it's okay
🙈Character you always forget exists
I guess I'd have to say Holly? He's got brilliant comedic timing and delivery (as Lovett and Hayridge) but the fact she was cut out in the later seasons and then brought back in season 8 and then gone again in the more recent ones just feels disjointed so she's easily forgotten sadly. (Yes I use she/he pronouns for Holly, she's genderfluid to me <3)
🐰Favorite non-human character
I'm gonna be honest, it would really have to be Holly. (I'm discounting Hologram Rimmer because he still sees himself as human in some way and he's had far too much screentime in this post). The comedic timing, the deadpan delivery, that amazing scene where she counts by smacking her head against the screen always makes me howl.
❤️‍🩹Character who deserved better
All of them. All of them. Rimmer, for reasons we've already gone into. Lister, the survivors guilt, he was SA'd at 12?!!, his entire relationship with Kochanski, his alcoholism, crushing loneliness, I could go on. The Cat, his entire species left him and his family because they were old and/or disabled, again loneliness. Kryten, literally in denial about his crew being dead, left alone for over 3 million years and still somehow hanging onto his sanity through episodes of androids, the need to do anything, literally anything to make sure he doesn't think to hard about anything other than laundry, honestly people need to talk about him more. Kochanski, losing her dave, stuck with this dave who looks exactly like hers but is so different, watching him destroy himself, having nothing in common with any of the crew, LONELINESS MAN.
Thank you so much for the ask! This was a long one phew

SaL anon here bestie and *deep sigh* here we are...again. Not to get off topic but have you ever seem The Green Mile?? I have a complicated relationship with that movie but I the thing from it permanently imprinted on my brain is when the warden comes in demands "What in the Blue Fuck was That!?" It a whole ass mood right now after watching that clip and I highly recommend just watching that line to get the full effect.
Why, for the love of God, are we bringing up Shannon again??!! She didn't even really come up during Eddie's PTSD arc but we're just gonna randomly insert her in a episode sort of about death?? Of course we are because KR has literally no new ideas. Oh except for this season where she's like "You know what hasn't been done yet?? We haven't emphasized importance of family by blood so we'll redeem all the horrible parents with zero effort to let everyone know your grudges are petty and just hurt you." You know why that hasn't been done Kristen??!! Because this is a show about FOUND family, realizing your importance and worth in a space that's safe for you to do that, and having the support you need when the bad times come!! She has actually forgotten the very foundation of this show and I'd scream but I'm also so, so tired. You know what time it is then 🍸🍸🍸. Gonna read comfort fic and find a comfort show to put on when that gets hard. Cheers friend!!
Bestieeeee! What. The fuck. Is happening?! I didn't answer this Friday and I should have because yesterday was a WHOLE other mess! I feel so bad for dragging you into this show just in time for it to all go to shit. We survived RNM, we don't deserve to suffer like this again! 😩😩😩
Your "KR has literally no new ideas" line is SO apt after that clip yesterday literally recycling the eddieana meeting. Parallels can be used and be effective but after she literally just re-did Buck's fight with Bobby over returning to work with Eddie (only to not show their apology or Eddie's decision to return to work on screen), and re-did Eddie's "it's time to get back out there after Shannon and figure out what you want") s4 arc last week, this "Buck meets a girl on a call in the exact same way Eddie met Ana" just looks...so so so lazy. Not to mention Buck and Eddie are only ever with women after they meet them on calls, AND we are reverting Buck back to season 1 "a relationship with THIS women must be able to fix me" which is just...gross. Buck was always one of my favorite characters but GOD I dread his personal scenes now because KR just doesn't know what to do with him unless it's trying to get into his pants in some way and she doesn't understand any of the motivations or what drives him as a character. Stop ruining my boy!! GOD I need her off this show like, YESTERDAY.
ANYWAY
This whole Shannon thing has me so 🙄🙄🙄 because as good as Ryan and Gavin are and Eddie/Chris scenes always are because they play so well off each other, this is like, the LEAST interesting thing they could have done and it's clearly not about Chris or Eddie or their complicated history with Shannon, it's just being used to push the "Eddie choosing someone to date for himself" idea. They could have given something deep and emotional this season like Chris now being old enough to start asking harder questions about Shannon leaving and Eddie trying to navigate that with him, or having a talk about Chris starting to be interested in dating and asking Eddie some hard questions about why Eddie isn't dating again since Ana has been gone for so long. But nope! It's "let's pretend this parent never did anything awful and there are zero complex feelings about them" hours once again. Thanks, I HATE it. And for me it ruins the nuance of Shannon's character because she WAS just a person who was struggling. But where Eddie thought his son didn't need *him* so much as he needed Eddie to provide for him and once he found out Chris just wanted to spend time WITH him he fought tooth and nail to make it work no matter how hard, Shannon decided it was too much and cut off all contact because keeping in touch with her son and making sure he knew he was loved wasn't as important as her not wanting to be put in an awkward position. And that's life! And Chris and Eddie should be allowed to acknowledge that they loved her at some point, Chris should be allowed to have good memories of his mom, and still be allowed to acknowledge that she abandoned them and hurt them deeply and there are complex feelings around that!
These complex parental relationships leading to the found family of the 118 has ALWAYS been at the heart of the show and you're right that KR has NEVER understood that and has spent this season undermining that bond across the whole team and any time the story tries to emphasize the found family it's also still pushing the blood family importance so the storytelling comes out confused and in opposition to itself giving the audience emotional whiplash. I'm just so very very tired of this. I'm positive it's too much to hope for but with audiences tuning out and the constant complaints at how the show is handling arcs and pacing and KR's choices, and even now articles by people who often write about 911 calling out the inconsistencies, maybe the negotiations for renewal will come with some stipulations on who gets to be in charge. Even if I didn't love EVERY storyline choice in the early seasons, the episodes themselves were ALWAYS enjoyable overall and there was so much good stuff going on it was easy to let the stuff I didn't like as much roll past, so it would be good to get back to that sort of vibe again and KR has proved over several seasons that she is NOT up to that task. With the Tarlos wedding wrapped up, we might get...I don't want to say "lucky" because I don't think Tim is the greatest thing ever, but we might get some bit of pacing and consistency and flow back in the show (I know LS has some pacing issues as well but that feels to me more like them having to work around RL's insistence on centricity than anything else)
Oof. Lets see if we can make it through these last few episodes with this dating nonsense, the sperm donor arc and L coming back, and maybe even a Tay Kay jumpscare. Can't wait 🙄 At least Ravi is back home and the finale emergency looks like it will be good and we're getting injured Chim so we're going to get *some* crumbs out of this mess. And then it will be summer and I've got a fic idea started soooo, we'll see if I can get anywhere with my astronaut!Buck, NASA medic!Eddie Countdowns inspired thingy. Cheers my friend, we are going to NEED IT. (But hey, if we survived RNM, we can do ANYTHING. But also we shouldn't have to and I need this show to STOP IT.) 🍹🍹🍹🍹🍹🍹🍹

I got dragged back into the Sonic franchise recently. Some kid had a comic for sale at a garage sale and I picked it up because I love comics, and have always liked Sonic!
Well, turns out I got the beginning of the Metal Virus arc! Where a certain shadowy doctor makes his second appearance.
Tumblr media
I’m one of those people who loves me a good villain. Needless to say, the art style and his introduction had me hooked. He practically dragged me back into liking Sonic by the throat.
I have now almost completely caught up in the IDW comics, with The Metal Virus arc, Bad Guys, Imposter Syndrome, Overcharged, and Scrapnik Island being my favorites of the lot. /Spoilers for the above below the cut!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s been so fun. I love the art style, I love the characters, I love the world they’ve built. And maybe I’m in the minority, but I still freaking love Starline, even after everything he’s done.
I was afraid they might cop out on his character in the same way Star Vs did to Toffee: Introduce a fascinating new villain to almost rival the main villain, then completely butcher his potential. As we started to get into Bad Guys, I feared this would be the case, particularly since Zavok and Mimic figured him out rather early.
Tumblr media
But THANK GOODNESS, he actually showed to have a brain and recognized his mistakes!
Tumblr media
Needless to say I got even more attached to him. I respect me a thoughtful villain.
Is he absolutely horrible in canon? Absolutely. Surge and Kit’s existence is proof of this. And I can understand why people don’t like him.
But, in typical me fashion, once I have a favorite character, I don’t let go. I love this stupid platypus to death, and gosh dangit if I’m not going to do something with him.
IRONICALLY, despite the fact that I just said i love him as a competent villain, I decided for my story that he wasn’t always that way! What’s the saying behind making AUs and ships? You want to see the characters happy?
Well, Starline is no exception to this rule. While I’m still working out the bugs (I started my AU/early canon story, so some things clash with him personality wise by the end of his saga-(they really seemed to drop the suave, poised doctor aspect really quickly, didn’t they?) I have a whole early history with him and my OCs being friends. (Because I need fluffy before the angst and trauma that follows of course.)
I’ll leave that for another post though. This is just to kind of introduce how this obsession started.
And going six weeks strong, it shows no signs of stopping. (Though I actually haven’t slept well in the entire six weeks because I’m so excited, so that sucks xD but that’s why I’m starting this blog now. Maybe being able to share about it will finally help me sleep. 🤣)
Stay the course! I’ll see you all in the next one.

For the character, maybe Frank Zhang and/or Piper McLean?
Send me a character!
Frank:
First impression: Hell yeah shapeshifter character :) < (animorphs fan) What a lovely fella :)
Impression now: He deserves so much more....
Favorite moment: Of course gotta go with freeing Thanatos and just the entire Alaska/Canada fight scene. Wish the whole curse thing was more relevant outside of that moment but other than that, hell yeah you go Frank.
Idea for a story: I want him and Leo to be friends,,,, like. actually friends. Please,,,
Unpopular opinion: I AM SO MAD AT LIKE, MARK OF ATHENA THROUGH TYRANT’S TOMB FOR WHAT RICK DID TO FRANK’S STORYLINE. What the hell was that. Why nullify his curse and then un-nullify it THEN NULLIFY IT AGAIN. WHAT WAS THE POINT. AND WHY DID READRIORDAN SPOIL FRANK’S ENTIRE TYRANT’S TOMB SUBPLOT BEFORE THE BOOK WAS PUBLISHED??? HELLO?????? Also also the Frank/Hazel/Leo love triangle & Leo/Frank rivalry was BAD and UNNECESSARY, jealous boyfriend trope is OUT. (Leo being half oblivious to it all was a little funny though).
Favorite relationship: Frazel is extremely cute HOWEVER again, i want Frank and Leo to be friends,,, please,,, i just want them to TALK-
Favorite headcanon: While i have Opinions™ about neurotypical Frank it does directly support my headcanon that adhd/dyslexia/autism is a genetic thing for demigods rather than an inherent “demigodly” trait. Thank you Frank for your service in me trying to fix a ton of the niche kinda ablelist things in the series <3 But aside from that. Let him be neurodivergent cowards.
Piper:
First Impression: Woah,,, she’s just like me for real,,,,
Impression now: Rick. Rick you can stop writing “I’m not like other girls” characters. Rick- Rick sTOP-
Favorite moment: It’s an extremely tiny moment but in Mark of Athena there’s this tiny moment described in passing of Piper being the one to physically drag Nico out of the jar/battlefield when they’re fighting the twin giants and a.) it’s such a funny scene to me and b.) Brain go brrr with thoughts about Nico & Piper having a bit of kinship from that moment/Nico respecting Piper a lot for basically being one of if not the only one to like, actually help him out of the Giant’s lair.
Idea for a story: Piper, Drew, Sadie, and Lacy all going on a quest/adventure together. Let them all unpack that “I’m not like other girls” complex. Very fun potential for an exploration on different manifestations and expressions of femininity particularly how it intersects with different identities. There is so much depth you could go into with that.
Unpopular opinion: Stop making her fashionable, she has abhorrent fashion taste on purpose. Give Piper those absolutely ridiculous thrift store t-shirts!!! The most gaudy, tacky things imaginable! Horrible color combos! Have fun with it! She not only has bad fashion taste but also MONEY. She has access to EXPENSIVE horrible fashion! Either that or just give her basic plain clothes. NOT fashionable plain clothes, i mean Bland As Hell.
Favorite relationship: LET PIPER AND DREW BE GOOD SISTERS TO EACH OTHER PLEASE-
Favorite headcanon: Piper wears velcro shoes (probably kid’s velcro shoes) and jorts she made herself. I will never change my mind on this.

This might sound like such a stupid and simple question to ask but I'd really like the writers to answer what exactly Maya did wrong that was so horrible it's taken them an entire season to repair the Marina relationship?
Like she didn't cheat, she didn't physically hurt anyone (other than herself), the "blackmail" was inevitably justified, Carina was mad at her for it but how does that effect them for a whole season?
Did they just want to avoid a baby storyline again so they kept Maya and Carina apart for most of the season?
I know people will say it was to show Maya struggling with mental health but I always thought Maya to be stronger than that and to then give her "healing" 1 episode with a Diane session does not make a mental health storyline. I think it was less about her mental health and more using her to show Beckett being a dick and warranting Maya to give him that bottle which would enhance HIS storyline.
Maybe I just want one of my favorite TV couples to be happy again already. I get putting in the work to get them back on track but I find it hard to believe it would take this long when they didn't have a catalyst as mentioned above or something else that "broke" them.
I don't think it should be looked at as what Maya did 'wrong' as what kept them apart for a season. Yes it probably took a little longer than it had to and they dragged it out for drama purposes but that's Shondaland for you. There's not going to be a realistic explanation for that. But honestly it's better than the alternative and rushing through it like they already did with the cheating storyline. We actually got to see them take their time while rebuilding their relationship and falling in love all over again in a way. And they did it while also paralleling scenes from the beginning of their relationship.
It wasn't just the blackmail that had them on bad terms. It was a mixture of things. It was Maya never getting the chance to deal with her trauma. It was Maya shutting her out for months and not really being present like Carina explained last episode. It was their conversation at the hospital. All of these things can do a lot of emotional damage which is why Carina is still struggling to move past it all and rightfully so. Especially since we don't exactly know how much time has past since then but it doesn't seem like it's been a lot from episode to episode. These things take time to heal from and I'm glad the writers actually took the time to show the progression. Yes they could have done more with Maya's mental health story in general than just giving her one big episode with Diane but I think getting that was crucial and we finally got a deeper dive into Maya as a character. It's not all going to be perfect but I think overall they still did a good job with Maya's growth and journey this season.

The Great Izzy Hands Divide
Hello all. I come to you a Izzy neutral, huge TV enjoyer with media studies background, here to try and answer the fandom’s polarizing, puzzling, and at time painful question of what is this Izzy divide? And how do we move on from it so we can all have fun, and everyone can feel safe.
And not get viscous over whatever happens in season 2.
As it’s clear-I’m writing anonymously because the tension has gotten-that intense and I’m earnestly afraid of backlash from both sides. That’s not to say EVERYONE in the OFMD twitter/tumblr fandom is part of this polarizing Izzy divide, but the discussions, discourses, pain, and attacks, have become so loud I believe most people-even a neutral person like myself have heard about them/seen them on our twitters/tumblrs. I love this show so much and have been in the online community since it aired in March, so a lot of this is based on my observations-and from what friends on each side have told me. For the sake of protecting everyone who has received online hate or are just trying to have fun in fandom-I won’t be listing any usernames, or quoting specific tweets/blog posts, but if you’re doubtful about any of my talking points you need only check Izzy tags on tumblr/twitter.
My hope in this meta is to unpack what’s going on, where are these sides coming from, what do they seem to believe, and how can we collectively move forward no matter how we feel about Izzy to just have fun with an extremely inclusive, progressive, funny, romantic, and queer show that’s obviously meant very much to many of us in terms of representation. My biggest goal is making folks feel able to have fun in fandom spaces-and everyone to be a little kinder.
So to start off-let me do my best to summarize what is going on for those who aren’t active on twitter/tumblr or are so deep on one side/in a corner they don’t see much discourse:
In some pockets of the fandom there is a very heated schism over the character of Izzy Hands that goes beyond just ‘folks who dislike Izzy as a character’ and ‘folks who like Izzy as a character’.
There are those who proclaim his character is inherently horrible and irredeemable and anyone who is a big fan of him must by proxy, be a horrible person too. For the sake of this analysis these are the “Izzy-haters”. The opposite side appears to be a group who really adore Izzy, and see him as a much softer and sympathetic antagonist/anti-hero and believe those who hate Izzy lack empathy or are very puritanical and are misreading his character. I’ll refer to them as the “Izzy-apologists”.
So how did this come about? And why’s that worth writing meta on? Don’t all fandoms have character and ships wars and so on? Absolutely. But it’s gotten to the point some people are getting constantly harassed and doxed or people are afraid to even share thoughts or fan-made content about the show without fear of retaliation or being dragged into a divide. So where does this fall in the context of fandom?
Whenever a character becomes a fan favorite, some of their fans look for ways to justify their actions, and/or ship them with numerous people. This happens in all fandoms. Look at Harry Potter (cringe I know, absolutely fuck JK Rowling, but I’m assuming it’s popular enough you all know the reference I will make here), back in its hay-day one of the most popular ships was with Harry and his constant bully/rival Draco-because Draco became such a fandom darling. This was called ‘slash’ shipping, to purposefully ship two characters together who were enemies/rivals/at odds in the media and it has remained very common in all fandoms.
It’s not a bizarre phenomena for people to relate/find an antagonist sexy and want to put them in situations, especially if they get exciting romantic/sexual tension out of it. People can like villains/antagonists for many reasons: maybe it’s their confidence, their camp, their backstory is complex, or something as simple as their design is sexy. It’s not bizarre either, for fandom to develop characters with little to no backstory or fill in parts of their backstory that ‘fanon’ (fan content considered canon amongst a fandom) becomes so big it’s challenged between fans if someone rejects it-even if it has no canonical basis in the media itself.
So Izzy fans (I say fans not apologists yet) began doing so, writing Izzy fic, making Izzy art, making Izzy/Ed backstories, so on and so forth. Typical fandom behavior. However as is also typical fandom behavior-some people don’t enjoy seeing some of those slash pairings, when the canonical interactions between those characters involved pain. So certain fans began making it clear they didn’t want to see it/disliked it. Others pointed out some Ed characterization in certain pieces of content could be slightly problematic in terms of racial stereotypes if it involved making Ed as consistently violent toward Izzy after canon implied Ed only resorted to violence toward him for having his life threatened. And again, as usual in fandom, a few overzealous folks can really stir the pot and make it worse for everyone.
From what I observed: a few key ‘Izzy-haters’ popped up and began making the sweeping generalization that all big “Izzy fans” were racists and white, for liking Izzy in any capacity after he hurt his POC boss Ed. Some of those folks were big on twitter, and POC themselves, so their voices reached far-and well-lots of people wanting to be sure they didn’t get called racists themselves or accidently support something racist quickly joined in on these call-outs and the mounting generalizations regarding any sort of sympathetic Izzy content that diverged from canon. This generalizations became about the fans of Izzy themselves than just Izzy.
Logically, for the Izzy fans who weren’t going to be shamed into dropping their favorite character, this led to them becoming very defensive of Izzy to defend themselves. Arguments came up that Izzy was actually harmless, Stede was just as bad as Izzy, or the other characters’ actions against Izzy were far worse and the show’s framing was wrong to cast him as ‘the worst’, ‘Izzy is fictional and it doesn’t matter-the show is itself is messily written so is anyone to criticize Izzy’. These folks became “Izzy-apologists”, who instead of just being fans of Izzy-would only be fans of Izzy if they could prove he was unproblematic.
Things escalated and escalated with people getting intense on each side. An Izzy-apologist made a rape joke that went a mini-viral about wishing sexual assault on all people who hate Izzy. Some POC felt uncomfortable staying in fandom or going through main tags from some of the stereotyping HCs/content around characters of color shipped with Izzy. It bears noting though, the most extreme harm appears to have been done toward the Izzy fans group. There was an instance where doxing was attempted and potentially succeeded against an Izzy fan, with a bunch of their closest followers being threatened as well, leading a large major of Izzy fans  on twitter to become especially anxious, and turn even the most neutral person, or mild Izzy fan, into a stern Izzy-apologist out of fear that anyone who aligned themselves with “Izzy-haters” would commit the same kind of horrifyingly harmful behavior that could affect peoples’ off-line lives. And that if they couldn’t prove Izzy was actually a harmless character-they were in danger for openly liking him.
So that leads us to our current state of affairs. Some Izzy-haters proudly proclaim their disdain for Izzy and his big fans, occasionally getting into arguments with apologists over how much Izzy is at fault vs Ed, or dismissing anyone who likes Izzy in any capacity as racist. Any POC who claim to be an Izzy-fan are often erased or accused of race-faking or internalized racism. People who seem to support Izzy ships/art/fics with likes/retweets that are sympathetic toward him are characterized as apologists or racist as well. Izzy-apologists or stans get hateful anons on tumblr or mean quote retweets on twitter. Pretty hostile.
On the flip side, some Izzy-apologists have taken to calling anyone who doesn’t outright love Izzy, or mainly engage in canon ship content as “Gentle-beardies” and speak about them in mocking, referring to them as boring, mean people who lack sympathy for Izzy because he’s an underdog or an old man who isn’t attractive enough to get sympathy. There’s a belief from some that if you profess any dislike toward Izzy you’re probably an asshole who’s ready to dox everybody who does like Izzy. Many POC are often shut-down or ignored-or told they don’t understand history/media studies when they point out issues with certain Izzy HCs/fics. People who dislike Izzy or pointed out in his laws in good faith have also received hateful anons or mocking quote retweets. Again-pretty hostile.
And that leaves…a lot of tense neutral people in the middle. Anyone who ranges from mildly enjoying Izzy to disliking him without making it personal. Folks who would happily write fics or do art or funny HCs about their thoughts on Izzy with others but are afraid to get lumped in any category. People trying to appease sets of friends who will react very strongly if you seem to lean to one side of the Izzy divide that isn’t their own.
So I’d like to try…and see if I can try and break down where these two groups' beliefs are spanning from-and see if there is someone who is actually ‘right’ in all this. I think I recently cracked the code on why no matter how many debates break out on twitter or tumblr over Izzy there never seems to be any progress to peace-and it is because the two sides are viewing Izzy in extremely different lenses.
Let’s start with the Izzy-haters. From what I’ve gathered, they’re of the belief Izzy is an extremely racist, homophobic, irredeemable bigoted character, a la a neo-nazi biker at the bar who’s bad side suddenly comes out once he gets a chance to show his power. Therefore anyone who is somehow seeing Izzy as sympathetic or redeemable is clearly harboring those internalized racisms or homophobias themselves. This lens sees Izzy as the ultimate villain of the show, it views Izzy in the frame of history in the show’s time period, as a white man with the power of whiteness in the 1700s, which he uses to bully others and eventually tear down Ed mentally.
Their evidence usually comes from the following talking points:
Izzy’s treatment of crew of color: consistently bullies and talks down Fang and Ivan, and once in power uses it to have crew of color doing hard labor.
Izzy hates gay people: Izzy mocks Lucius when he catches him with Pete and clearly targets him for his overt feminine labeled qualities of queerness-similar to his distain for Stede and his lack of more traditional masculinity.
Izzy sees Ed as an animal: Izzy sees Ed as an object and only wants to see him living out a stereotype of a violent POC, and Izzy sells out Ed to the English in episode 8 just to have control of him afterwards.
Izzy-apologists look at Izzy in a nearly opposite light. Izzy is not so much a villain, as just a misunderstood antagonist-or even anti-hero/prickly old man who is harmless at the end of the day. He’s short, he has stomach issues, he doesn’t have that much power. He’s relatable because he’s trying his best at his job and his boss doesn’t appreciate him. This lens looks at Izzy as a queer, lower socio-economic, character without much power in the story he’s in, just trying his best to stay alive in the harsh world of piracy.
The Izzy-apologists often answer the above Izzy-Hater points with these arguments:
Izzy’s actions are not from racism & do not cause that kind of harm: Izzy is frustrated no one is working as hard as him on the ship since Ed is busy playing dress up, Fang is off getting sketched, and Izzy is just trying to survive, hence why he’s so harsh to everyone, and tired of being underappreciated. Race has nothing to do with it.
Izzy is gay himself and therefore can’t be homophobic: Izzy is clearly in love with Ed, as evidenced from interviews with Con O’neill & David Jenkins, and Izzy is just annoyed with Lucius and Stede being rich and/or is jealous of them and their freedom to be be openly queer.
Izzy is in love with Ed and served him for years: Izzy would not work for a man of color for years and try to protect him if he was racist. Izzy thought Calico Jack would get Ed out of the English raid before they showed up and only ‘took custody’ of Ed to save his life after things back-fired.
Both of these sides can seem pretty persuasive on their own without any context. And when the two groups are looking at Izzy in such vastly different lenses it makes sense why neither is ever going to agree or compromise on their viewpoints. It would be like a set of people arguing about the abilities of a rabbit-but one side thinks they’re talking about “Bugs Bunny” from “Looney Toons” and the other thinks they’re talking about “Thumper” from Disney’s “Bambi”. If one side goes “Well the rabbit loves wearing dresses” the other is going to call them outright liar-since they think they’re talking about an entirely different rabbit. They are very rarely going to reach a compromise because they are coming from two vastly different perceptions of what a rabbit is-just like these two sides are coming from two vastly different perceptions of who Izzy is and what he does.
So is either side “right”? As a neutral person, with friends on each side, here’s my perspective.
Let’s get to the elephant in the room. Is Izzy racist/homophobic or just misunderstood? That is the question. Because most progressive queer fans of a progressive queer show, would be very uncomfortable if they were stanning a character who was akin to “Hans Landa”( the Nazi from Inglorious Basterds or “Calvin Candie”(the plantation owner from “Django Unchianed). But because a few Izzy-Hater people very vocally read Izzy as akin to a Hans or Calvin, Izzy-apologists in the last few months went into full gear doing their best to assert-Izzy lacks any power and carries identities that would make it impossible for him to be like any of those characters, with metas, HCs, fics, and so on.
I think the real answer comes from a misunderstanding of racism on both sides. A lot of people-especially white people, often think of racism in all or nothing terms. You’re either card-carrying Neo-Nazi member of the KKK, who loves Brexit to get rid of immigrants, or a monthly supporter of the ACLU, NAACP, and all other progressive racial rights groups who have never said or done a racist thing in their life.
The reality is unfortunately and fortunately much more nuanced. Anti-racism studies tell us most of Western society itself was built on foundations of white supremacy and heteropatriarchy. Most countries of the world were colonized at some point, and had racist laws and processes built into their civilization. So small and big acts of racism exist every single day. Many people will do or say racist or homophobic things toward one group or another without ever intentionally trying to hurt anyone-but still have horrible impact-or an impact that adds to a smaller effect but still long term process of alienating others which becomes harmful.
So what does that mean? It means people can often be racist or homophobic, or sexist or abliest, without ever consciously choosing to. Now it’s important to point out-in a good portion of those situations the harm they cause won’t be as intense as say, someone who is consciously and deliberately bigoted trying to get the outcome of causing pain to a group they have prejudice toward. The constant messages and systems in our society can contribute to something called “internalized bias” where society conditions a person to think about a certain group one way. In example-none of us have ever met a real elf, but so much media containing elves paints them as elegant, woodland, intelligent, and snobbish-that we would describe an elf like that if asked and expect them to behave like so. Well the same thing can happen when we see and hear stories of certain races stereotyped certain ways-we just assume certain certain behaviors are part of their defaults based on the stories we’ve been told-which can lead to far more dangerous situations if a group is being stereotyped as criminal or dangerous.
But that doesn’t mean those people who are causing the smaller acts of unintentional harm, or unconsciously causing harm, should be entirely dismissed as innocent by naivete, and therefore allowed to go on. If a child breaks a window with a football you wouldn’t arrest them for deliberate vandalism-but nor would you simply ignore the matter without having a conversation about how to use footballs in the future to avoid breaking other peoples’ windows.
Okay, what does this have to do with Izzy? Or Our Flag Means Death? If you check the meta tags of tumblr or articles written on the show, the queue is long of people who have analyzed and pointed out how well the show addresses race, racism, and so on in the show. It’s not a race blind show unlike some media adaptations (Like Bridgerton) where the different power structures of race in the modern day or the show’s time period, is never acknowledged. Episode five is extremely explicit in its addresses of race from how my fav Frenchie and Oluwande are treated. It addresses the inequalities of the 1700s while updating our protagonists enough from their asshole historical counterparts, that the show becomes and inclusive progressive story where racists are punished for their behavior. The show understands the nuance of racism and homophobia though, showcasing sometimes those unconscious moments can come up even from characters who mean well.
We actually see a good number of unconscious acts of racism in the show-like when Stede and Pete assume the Native Nation ate the hostages when they’re captured in Episode two, or when Stede stays awkwardly silent to Badminton’s comments about his “colorful crew” in Episode one. It’s obvious the most egregious racists though in the show are meant to be the English navy, from the comments to their innuendos, to their positioning as the most disruptive villains in the show. If there are the equivalent to modern day hate-groups or bigots in the show-it’s them based on textual canon evidence alone.
By that assertion-we know Izzy is not part of the navy. He is a pirate, he works with crew of color, and is in the show until episode 9 following most of Ed’s, a man of color, orders. Additionally, Izzy would not have sought the advice of Spanish Jackie, a black woman, if he were truly so bigoted he could not stand being below/taking help or orders from people of color. Therefore from what we’ve seen, it’s not really fair of Izzy-haters to assert Izzy is an absolute to his core violent bigot, and anyone who manages to love him after watching the show must be one too
To Izzy-haters’ points about Izzy mistreating the crew of color-it’s worth noting he’s just as awful to Pete and Lucius who are white in the show too. Izzy is clearly a grump who doesn’t have much affection or respect for anyone-unless they’re high ranking above him and proved their worth as a pirate like Ed or Jackie.
As for Izzy being overtly homophobic-as in hating any form of homosexuality or same-sex relations, that doesn’t entirely track with him inviting Calico Jack to help when its made clear to Ed and Jack have had a previous sexual relationship. Granted-maybe Izzy wasn’t around or didn’t know that, but it bears thinking he probably knew Jack wasn’t entirely heterosexual, or Ed if he’s had previous relationships with men and Izzy continued working for him.
To the final point of Izzy-haters, being that Izzy only sees Ed as an animal-it’s clear Izzy respected Ed’s reputation as Blackbeard and did care enough about him to send Calico Jack to try and save him before the English attacked, and make sure the English couldn’t execute him when it turned out he was there. Izzy says it himself in the text he’s “honored” to work for the “legendary Blackbeard” so he has some respect for that figure and humbleness toward it as well. There is some subtext to be gleamed from how Izzy smiles when Ed chokes him or even appears delighted after he realizes Ed has forced him to eat his toe, that he does harbor some sort of romantic or sexual feelings toward Ed-at least when he’s in his Blackbeard persona.
With all that said, I think canon evidence of season one makes it clear to us Izzy is no Hans or Calvin, and therefore his fans are not stanning or attracted the show’s equivalent of a Neo-Nazi. It’s extremely unfair to decide anyone who is a fan of Izzy is racist, because the comedy of the show and nuance to his character make it clear that’s not his sole role in the show. So liking Izzy in and of itself is not an issue, and should not be treated as a crime or generalized that only “white” or “XYZ” people like Izzy. And it definitely should not lead to people jumping to the conclusion someone who likes Izzy is harboring some deep hatred themselves, or is anyway worthy of doxing/stalking/etc.
So is that it-insanely long meta over-the Izzy-apologists are right? Well-as I said this is nuanced-as is the concept of racism and bigotry. While the text shows us Izzy is not to the level of bigot of a Neo-Nazi, I do think the text makes it clear to us Izzy is the antagonist for a reason and not a misunderstood little guy.
A lot of Izzy-fan content delves into the idea of the hidden world of Izzy. There are popular posts out there that say things like “Say what you want about Izzy but if a child handed him a toy phone he would answer it” although we never see him interact with children in the show. There are lots of HCs about his backstory, many certain Izzy must come from a poor, working class background due to Oluwande’s comment that “most pirates don’t choose this lifestyle”. There’s especially a lot of fan content generated around Izzy’s subtextual and interview commented on queerness.
Izzy is shipped with almost every male character in the show, especially with Ed and Stede or sometimes both at once. There are tons of metas and fics about Izzy’s repressed homosexuality and the shame and struggle he carries trying to be masucline in the rough world of piracy. Izzy being a trans man is an extremely popular headcanon too, to the point polls and threads and blog posts have been made about it. Some users have remarked they see Izzy as “inherently” trans, because of how much of an outsider he seems to them, referring to the fact he is shorter, teased, and seems unable to have the man of his desires, Ed.
It’s clear Izzy-apologists see Izzy from this lens. A queer man, who is teased, overlooked, and unable to get the things he has worked so hard for and truly desires. He is not some swaggering Chris Evans pretty-boy, he is a small, easily flustered man-and he earns their sympathy and at times empathy. In comparison to Ed and Stede who are taller, and seem to be getting what they want from the narrative, Izzy is an underdog. He doesn’t have Ed’s charm and looks or Stede’s money and influence over Ed. So Izzy apologists will often assert Stede is a far worse character than Izzy-a rich queer man invading spaces and who callously ignores Ed’s feelings abandoning him on the beach. Izzy’s pushing of Ed to be Blackbeard is only so Ed will survive in the world of piracy, as much as it hurt Ed.
For some Izzy-apologists Ed’s cutting off his Izzy’s toe was absolutely abusive and not a justified retaliation for the threat on his life, and shift the entire focus of the narrative that Izzy has been Ed’s constant victim-a trope that appears in many Izzy-apologist centered fics. Izzy is an “attack dog” or “sex toy” or “butler” to Ed-just tirelessly working for Ed all these years, out of desperation he’ll someday appreciate him. Some even are certain Izzy is Ed’s oldest friend. And the cruelest thing is Izzy is completely overlooked when an incompetent richer, and more effortlessly masculine man shows up and steals Ed’s heart.
This viewpoint seems to be why Izzy-apologists to dismiss any accusations of racism or homophobia in fics or HCs, and label themselves the ‘fun’ part of the fandom, recounting fans of canon couples as dull and unimaginative or unable to empathize with the struggle of someone as marginalized as Izzy.
The thing is, Izzy is not as marginalized in the canonical text as this popular fanon has made him out to be. As far as we know, canonically, Izzy is a cis white man, who has gained the benefits of it in the pirate world of OFMD. There’s nothing in the text to indicate he is poor or struggling, or specifically comes from an impoverished background. One could equally argue he came from a naval background hence his sense of his discipline like many historical pirates just as easily -as there just as little evidence. His first introduction is intimidating and held up as a contrast from Stede’s bumbling, that Izzy is the kind of ideal, masculine, pirate who commands respect. He nearly slices Stede apart in sword play until Oluwande and Pete assist in distracting Fang and Ivan.
In Izzy’s next appearance he commands respect in Spanish Jackie’s bar, with just his name getting Jackie to pause in her actions after she’s been shown to take no shit from anyone else present in the scene. It’s an entire point of episode three Izzy is insanely frustrated by Stede because he is the first person to best Izzy at stealing hostages in a long time-which is also noted as a surprising thing by Ed. Izzy is not a powerless little guy, he is second in command on the most powerful pirate’s ship. Within the show’s context he is a picture of ideal masculinity that pirates would strive for, because in the world of OFMD there no Marvel-esque Chris Evanses. No male character with a six pack and chiseled jaw. They cast handsome Con O’Neill for a reason-who has earned the admiration for his looks and attractiveness from other cast members like Nathan Foad (Lucius) and Vico Ortiz (Jim). So yes Izzy does get more respect than someone like Lucius or Stede off the revenge, hence at least one of the reasons he's baffled by the revenge itself. And it could be a multitude of reasons Izzy bullies Lucius and Stede-maybe it is internalized homophobia, jealousy of their open flamboyancy or past wealth, or maybe he just finds them annoying in general. In the end why he does it can be debated forever, but it's clear he does do it, because he is an antagonist in season 1.
As for Izzy’s loyalty or submissiveness to Ed-this is also contradicted by canon. Izzy disobeys Ed-multiple times. He doesn’t tell Stede “Blackbeard” wants to speak to him in episode two-and ignores Ed’s order to not duel Stede in episode six. Izzy tells Ed point blank in episode four he was honored to work for the “legendary blackbeard” which is the only reason he tolerated Ed’s changing moods-which surmises Izzy only knew Ed after he became Blackbeard, not as a long loyal childhood friend. Izzy is ready to leave the moment he thinks Ed has officially become an embarrassment and lost his mind in episode four, until Ed offers him the chance to become the new captain once he disappears after using Stede to fake his death. Which Izzy excitedly agrees to, delighted to see Ed’s ruthless side back again and not at all sad about the idea Ed will leave. Lastly, Izzy’s taunting of Ed in episode ten and calling him a ‘namby-pampy’ does not appear for the benefit of Ed’s survival, because he did not take this step when Ed was most vulnerable crying in a blanket fort. He only took this step when Ed decides he no longer wants to be Blackbeard, which means Izzy looses out a chance to have status by being associated with the most powerful pirate.
And as for Izzy’s queerness, yes there is a lot of subtext and interviews which strongly indicate Izzy is not heterosexual, but that doesn’t mean queer individuals are incapable of perpetuating homophobia themselves. Even within the Queer community there’s plenty of gate-keeping that happens amongst queers, and even if we decide Izzy himself is gay and in love with Ed in his own way, it doen’t diminish he clearly has a distinct idea of how queer men should carry themselves, with a distain for those who behave overtly classified feminine such as Lucius, or Stede (Or Ed in episode ten-hence the specific insult of “pining in a silk robe” toward him from Izzy).
So no, Izzy is not a misunderstood, oppressed figure in the show with a secret heart of gold. He is the antagonist very much so, and painting Izzy’s behavior as softer or justified by increasing the violence of Ed or ignoring the context, is something that is not just harmful to POC fans, but to those who consume fic and internalize those stereotypes getting put forth. Whether Izzy’s harm to Ed is because he selfishly needed him to be Blackbeard, or he had an internalized bias, or maybe he really in some backwards way wanted to ‘help’ Ed-it’s not insane that some fans and especially POC fans are going to notice the dynamic of race in these interactions-and how Ed being pressured into remaining a hyper violent persona by a white man is impossible to see without some element of internalized bias in place on Izzy’s part. Izzy is the antagonist for a reason, and people are allowed to find fault and discuss the villainous elements of him, without folks acting like it is a personal attack.
So what’s the point of all this? Am I trying to police Izzy-apologists they have to drop all their HCs and only ship canon content? Saying dark content with slash ships has no place in fandom at all? Not at all. Non-canonical ships have existed forever in fandom-so have villain/antagonist love. So has kinky, dark, and dubious content. Ship whoever you want to ship, and have whatever favorite character you want. Everyone deserves to have fun playing characters in fandom space without fear of being doxed or sent threats if they do so in a way another fan dislikes. Fandom content does have to be restricted to keeping things canonical and have the fun of canon is making AUs or putting characters in situations they'll never be in during canon.
There’s nothing weird about liking or relating to a villain. Everyone loved Walter White during “Breaking Bad”’s hay day (hence why the show was so big) but we didn’t see a rise in folks running off and cooking meth-and even today as I see the queer community reclaiming Jessie and Walt from the show-I don’t see folks accusing them of planning to go cook meth. Izzy fans can love Izzy and see parts of themselves in him without implying they would treat Ed the way Izzy did or share every single belief Izzy has. Just like people can relate to Walt for being powerless and angry in his life-WITHOUT resorting to cooking meth and becoming  drug lords-Izzy fans can relate to Izzy from feeling overlooked at work without meaning they’re going to bully their friends into behaving a certain way. Izzy fans should not feel forced to become Izzy-apologists and well apologize for liking Izzy, or feel obligated to soften his edges.
But Izzy-apologists should be mindful of tagging their content that especially veers into slash-and also be open to hearing if the content they’re putting in main tags or sharing amongst themselves is leaning into harmful real-world stereotypes which can perpetuate peoples’ biases.
So with that said-I want to assert Izzy is the antagonist yes-but he’s not the Neo-Nazi from an Indiana Jones movie. Fanon Izzy has captured both sides of the Izzy debate some have forgotten what a real rabbit (the real Izzy) is like, and rewatching the show may help lift some of those lenses for folks. As of now Izzy stands at a crossroads-season 2 may push him into redemption or increase the stakes of his antagonism.
If Izzy does end up with a redemption arc and Izzy-haters need to be prepared to trust Jenkins and his writing team, that they do not loose faith in OFMD because it doesn’t go the way they hoped.
And with that said-I urge the Izzy-apologists the same, if Izzy doesn’t get a redemption arc and becomes worse, or is written out-it isn’t from fan pressure or a sudden 180 on the writer’s part. It’s part of David Jenkins’ vision which he’s stated he knew from the start of the story.
So what’s the consensus, where do we go from here? Here’s my suggestion based on the observations listed above:
Izzy-haters: Please recognize Izzy is more nuanced than you think, and even if season 2 puts him further him down his villain path, let Izzy fans exist in peace. You can block them, or mute them, or just ignore them. Unless they’re threatening folks if you can’t handle them enjoying Izzy in any capacity, you need to just let them be because it is just fiction and there are many many ways to enjoy a story or have fun with it. There are plenty of POC who like Izzy and and ALL of his fans do not deserve to be called names or accused of racism just for simply liking Izzy. Real people should not be getting over fictional character’s rights.
Izzy-apologists: Please recognize Izzy is the antagonist for a reason, and people in good faith commenting on it is not an attack on you personally even if some Izzy-haters made you think so. Loving Izzy should not involve making the rest of characters, especially those of color, into harsher, crueler versions of themselves to make Izzy’s actions pale in comparison. If you can’t enjoy him without doing so, then please keep that especially dark content out of the main tags so people aren’t subject to racial or queer stereotypes that can be harmful. Real people should not be getting over a fictional character’s rights.
All of us: can take things in better faith, be more patient, learn to block & mute people if we stumble into their territory and they aren’t forcing their version of things down our throats. If we really do see content we think is going to hurt other people-we should address people privately in good faith assuming it was an accident and have a discussion about it. There is no reason any person should be sent anon hate or doxed over fictional characters. And if we start feeling overwhelmed-take a step back and breathe. Remember fandom should be fun.
And we should all remember-we shouldn’t be making sweeping generalizations about people or name-calling based on their favorite characters.
If you read any of this about the actions of “Izzy-haters” or “Izzy-apologists” and realized you might’ve contributed to some of their more toxic actions and perhaps I’ve persuaded you to reconsider-posting an open tweet or tumblr post of peace would be a nice step forward. “Sorry I called all Izzy fans toxic moving forward I realize that was unfair I won’t do it again” or “Sorry I said anyone who dislikes Izzy is prude and unempathetic I realize that was unfair and I won’t do it again”.
Well thanks for getting this far with me folks. I appreciate you taking the time to read this, I know it was a long one. My main goal is just that we all feel at peace to like or dislike Izzy as much we naturally do-without fear of any sort of retaliation or having our personhood labeled over it. As someone with friends on both sides-we’re honestly missing out on great times in fandom if we let our perception on one character divide us so violently or make us cruel to one another. Fandom should be fun-and if this helps even one person on either of these split fractures be a little kinder or calmer, I’ll be so cheery.
-Cheers, Frenchie’s most devoted fan.
TL;DR
Izzy is not a raging racist bigot, but that does not mean he’s pure and free of all wrong-doing or potential bias toward some characters.
Liking Izzy or relating to him does not mean that person BEHAVES like Izzy or would do the same things he does.
Do not refer to Izzy fans with generalized statements or accusations stating anyone who likes him must be a certain way.
Do not refer to Other character fans with generalized statements or accusations stating anyone who likes them must be a certain way.
A person is allowed to like Izzy without having to justify his actions.
We are allowed to disagree on how we characterize or see certain characters without making it personal.
People are allowed and it is normal to make fan content that diverges from canon.
Other characters should not be turned into racial or queer stereotypes to soften Izzy’s actions-and if that’s the only way you can enjoy him, keep it out of the main tags.
No one should EVER be doxxed or put in danger offline over their opinions on Izzy or any fictional character.
Learn to just mute and block people whose opinions you hate. Fandom should be fun. Real people should not be getting over fictional character’s rights.

Thoughts on The Roman Holidays… (UPDATED 12/01/22)
Since I’ve been watching the series over the last few days, I feel that I can articulate my thoughts a bit more here.
For starters, I can completely understand why the show was cancelled. There are moments where the show’s attempts to stay “hip and current” with the times (the 70s) were not only flat but also pretty darn cringe, not to mention the animation here is worse than the second and third seasons of The Jetsons. And then, there’s the fact that the template used for the Flintstones was hardly changed to give the Holidays a chance to stand on their own two feet (ie. Gus works at the marble quarry, is a cheapskate, has a horrible boss and enjoys bowling to de-stress). But in spite of all this…it DOES have its own kinda charm. That’s why I’ve been watching it for this long, lol. If it didn’t have “The Flintstones but IN ROME” thing attached to it, it MIGHT have been better.
If I had to say who’s my favorite character in the show thus far, I’d definitely have to say Gus. He’s not as loutish as Fred, and more snarky than George, and similar to those two, his own get-rich-quick schemes kinda fall flat on his face in ways that are utterly hilarious. Plus he’s got an “I don’t get paid enough to deal with this ish” face and it is PRICELESS. I’m gonna draw it one day and post it to my blog. That being said, I DO wish he had a foil to balance off of him, like how Fred and Barney do. The show attempted that with Herman, Groovia’s dad, but, eh, I wasn’t really feeling it.
Brutus is also a close second fave, although I’m disappointed that we didn’t get to have Daws Butler use the full extent of his talent—he would’ve stolen the show if he did, no doubt. Happius “Hap” Holiday, the teenage son, is not bad as a character either.
Evictus is also pretty hilarious. He’s like a cartoonish combination of Mr. Spacely and Mr. Krabs, while being as annoying as either of those two, and literally everyone drags him through the show, while he gets to drag the Holidays and anybody around on occasion. I love it.
Not fond of Mr. Tycoonius, probably because he barely showed up. He’s basically like Mr. Slate 2.0, but didn’t have much of the charm (or hateable characteristics) that Slate had. In fact, the blurb on the DVD mentions him as though he has all this importance, only for him to show up in like four of the show’s episodes. Like, really.
The female characters of the show are kinda…eh. Laurie, Precocia, and Groovia do have their strong points, but they just aren’t as memorable as Wilma and Betty or Jane and Judy. In fact, for the family template, they mostly used the family format for the Jetsons but swapped the genders of the kids. As I said above, this is actually to the show’s detriment, as it doesn’t give the cast to really stand on its own.
If I had to say who was my favorite female character, I’d have to go with Laurie. She not only keeps things on an even keel, but also seems to work with Gus and will go to bat for him (more on that below). And yes, while she does fall into the same shopping crazy habits that Wilma and Jane had, it doesn’t dominate her personality like either of those two (well, not really Wilma. Jane, though, yes.).
Precocia’s snarkiness is hilarious, but the show really underutilized her character, other than she’s supposedly a child genius. Like, she literally gets one episode, and it doesn’t really do much for her as a character—in fact, it’s more focused on Gus, than anything.
Groovia is okay, though her occasional gullibility gets on my nerves.
Honestly, though, how the Holidays haven’t been evicted yet despite LITERALLY BREAKING THE RULES OF THE LEASE (and occasionally causing other screw ups because of Gus’ schemes) is beyond me. They are coated with so much plot armor, they should’ve been in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
You know you’re in for a special kind of treat when the show makes you cringe in the first episode. I mean, there were some funny moments, especially when Precocia snarks at Gus’ cousin and everyone makes fun of Gus for his crazy idea, but I’m not kidding when I tell you that the whole scene where Gus has to pretend to be a teenager is one of the most cringeworthy things I have EVER seen. And this is coming from someone who genuinely likes the Galaxy Goof-Ups.
The episodes with Hap and Groovia were a bit more grating, though. I wasn’t very fond of the “The Big Split-Up”, which featured them at their stupidest AND their worst.
Another episode I wasn’t terribly fond of was “Star For a Day”. Two reasons—one, the animation was HORRIBLE. Two, the music really, REALLY got on my nerves. The Flintstones had some good tunes, and even the Jetsons. But this…ugh, that was just terrible. Add in the basic “Prince and the Pauper” plot, and yeah, a pretty generic episode.
That being said, there were a few good episodes from the show. .
One of my favorite episodes was “Switch is Which?” In it, Gus stays up all night working on a project for a big client, and Laurie has to pretend to be him in his place to both save his job and the project. The ruse works well (somehow) until the big client invites himself into “Gus’” home, forcing Gus and Laurie to dress as each other. In addition to the hilariously bad disguises and the ribbing that both Laurie and Gus get from their kids about them (and said client flirts with Gus in his disguise!), there’s a great moment in the end where their disguises are revealed, and the big client, rather than shutting down the whole thing like Tycoonius was starting to do, asks to get the whole story from “the man of the house”. One would assume he’d turn to Gus, but he actually turns to Laurie and she explains without hesitation. Seeing their devotion to each other, the client takes on the project, and Tycoonius doesn’t fire Gus, and Evictus doesn’t evict him; said client OWNS the bank of Rome, meaning Evictus has to answer to him. Laurie went to bat for Gus here, even though she admits that she knows nothing about his job or what it entails, and did so without shaming him OR bragging about it. In today’s times, such things would be seen as “woke”, but kudos to Hanna-Barbera for handling it well and not making it cringe.
“Hero-Sandwiched” was also a really good episode. True, Gus allows the attention to get to his head, and the other half where he’s arrogant and intolerable is really a dream, but his initial response to being hailed a hero is commendable, especially since most episodes featuring “accidental heroism” features the main character creating a world of lies only to have it blow up in his face. Gus just wanted to set the record straight before it got out of hand, and I have to give him props for that.

Getou for the character ask thing
Sorry anon I feel asleep before seeing this! But woo Geto now that's a blorbo I have a lot to say about.
First impression
Honestly my first impression of Suguru was very...confused? hvhvhj back then i still thought the villain we've been seeing so far was Suguru so I was just taking the backstory as 'okay we'll finally see what this guy is about'. And i have to give it to Gege, even though I didn't know these were two different people at the time, it kept bugging me 'hhhh this doesn't really seem to connect, would a character like this really do what he's doing right now?' Especially once I got to him wanting to kill the non-sorcerers to rid the world of curses like, him teaming up with curses just seemed like a leap. That being said my read of that part of jjk was very confused in an on itself...I got wrong information to read V0 after hidden inventory but before premature death so you can only guess at what a jumble my head was in. I needed to reread another time to straighten out what happened but since then i reread hidden inventory either completely or in bits so many damn times.
Impression now
Lifts Suguru up into the sky
This guy can fit so much love inside.
Let's be clear here, while Suguru is one of my fav jjk characters, he's never really managed the role of my favorite hero (Satoru) or villain (Kenjaku). I love him, but I've always loved characters who struggled in the world and still stubbornly did good and I've always specifically loved villains who did what they did out of some sort of twisted internal interest more than the ones with a sad backstory.
That being said I think Suguru is an endlessly fascinating and complex character and it's really neat that we get to see his internal struggles from that up close. He is such a horrible person but he's also a highly (and rigidly) moral person, the interaction is great. He also has a tendency to look down on others which he tries to mask as a kid but fully leans into as an adult, like who else would have thought to start a cult cmon. I've seen many hcs about roles reversed au where Satoru goes rouge and starts a cult but that's definitely a very Suguru thing to do, Satoru already grew up being worshipped why would he pull back into that in his breakaway stage, it would be like dragging behind a security blanket, THIS WILL NOT BE A SATORU REVIEW.
They are just so connected in my head if I think of one I think of the other.
My favorite thing about Suguru is that he developed his goals and ideals at 17 and they stayed VERY 17. Like, I remember what's it like being 17, I remember thinking in terms of black and whites and quick and bloody solutions to my problems. You usually age out of this, start seeing the grays of the world as you start to better understand how the world works. That everything is an interconnected system influenced by another system and its all well and good to say 'this should be different why the fuck isn't it different' but you won't change anything because the changes need to happen on the inside and not the surface.
Like, real life example. I go to college right and my college course group has stayed consistently pretty small, there is usually around 35 of us a year, I don't think we ever broke 40. My college is really good at preparing us for the scientific side of psychology as well as giving us a very wide net of knowledge so we can basically go everywhere after college. They do this by having a lot, a lot, of mandatory subjects. Like things like fucking MARKETING, i hated MARKETING, felt like i was selling my soul to the devil this is like the opposite of what i came to college to learn. So of course as subjects got more and more niche we all started bitching about how it would be nice if these subjects were you know, electable, so we can all choose 2-3 subjects in fields we really like and not bother with the rest. This would be 2-3 subjects as opposed to, and I'm not kidding here, 10-14 (and the highest) per semester. This would be great right? We would have a much lighter course work, we would be able to go deeper into elected subjects instead of just skimming the surface, we would be able to READ OTHER LITERATURE ASIDE FROM THE TEXTBOOK, one of my biggest qualms with my college is that we were often told to read on our own which would be great and good if the course load wasn't so fucking big and it was always a struggle between going to classes, doing class projects, studying and free time to read anything outside of it. So allowing us to specialize would be great right? The thing is, the way our educational system is set up, our professors don't get paid if they are teaching a class with less than 10 students. It's complete and utter bullshit but it is what it is. And with 35-38ish students a year, there was simply no way to safely specialize us while keeping our professors paid. Our professors wanted this change too but simply couldn't afford it. And there's the gray you know, our professors or our college wasn't the enemy but the way the stupid educational system was set up. Something that isn't really one person you can easily point to but a big mechanic that needs to be carefully pried apart to be changed. Gray and hard to attack, that's how adult life is.
And this is a thing Suguru not only never really grasped (he was 17, nobody expects of him then), but also I feel he prevented himself from grasping it. I think Gege said somewhere that Suguru had to repeat to himself he hates non-sorcerers, and I don't really take this as Suguru didn't actually hate non sorcerers, but more so he was actively preventing himself from growing a more complex moral system because he was already too far in to go back. It's not like he didn't hate non-sorcerers it's more like he couldn't afford to stop seeing them as the primary guilty party in this whole very complex mess. I'll talk about this a tad more in a sec, but I find it very fun that Suguru is a character with a strong moral compass entrapped by the said moral compass. He very much always has to be the one in the right and the one who knows best and it's so 17. People call Satoru immature but honestly he's so much more mature than Suguru just because he allowed himself to change and grow, while Suguru purposefully roadblocked his own mental growth. Changing ones mind on things is a sign of growth. It's a sign you are learning and becoming a better person. I held beliefs when i was younger that i condemn now simply because i learned better. Suguru didn't do this, He has killed people, many people, and there is no coming back from that the way there is from saying something stupid online when ur 15. He has cemented his path and his path is based on immature and very limited thinking. And so, to survive his own ideals he has to limit his own moral development and convince himself he is in the right. Because there is no longer going back, he's hardlocked himself into forever going forward.
Or well, forever going forward until someone stops him.
Favorite moment
"This is true love."
"Then this is justice."
Like oh boy we really telling on ourselves here aren't we.
Idea for a story
I've been toying with an idea for a curse! Suguru story for a bit now...honestly I just really enjoy writing curses, Satoru was so fun to write because of the way he moved but Suguru would be different.
Unpopular opinion
Remember when i said i will talk about it more, here it is. So back when the script for jjk 0 was out we got that alleyway scene and I don't remember exactly what was said but it was something that implied that Suguru had regrets which lead to people going 'suguru regretted everything' and then the backlash of 'suguru regretted' nothing. And by god there can be nuance here. Do I think Suguru specifically regretted killing all those people or did he not actually hate non-sorcerers? No, I think what he said we true, he still hated non-sorcerers, he still saw them as lesser and didn't specifically regret killing them at all. But i do think there was regret there. I think as he grew older he very much did start to develop his thinking more (therefor having to stunt it) and he very much did start to understand that he was only seeing parts of a problem and not the whole, that his actions had no meaning in the end and that he blocked himself from going back and doing things over and differently. Meaning and reason for things is so important to Suguru as a basis of his very understanding of himself. He's a moral person who exists with a higher meaning, he's doing the right thing, he's not evil, he's doing good, the other just can't see it yet because he's the one who has the best understanding of the situation, he knows things they don't and therefor is the only one with the full grasp on it (again, very 17). Suguru didn't regret his actions specifically, I don't think, he regretted because he understood he chose wrong, that what he did didn't actually change anything, that that slaughter and effort had no meaning. He didn't regret his actions but the futility of them. There's subtilties to both Suguru's and Satoru's emotions in that scene that I think fandom takes to extremes often. It's either Suguru regrets everything or regrets nothing, it's either Satoru feels immensely guilty and regrets killing Suguru or he's a dutiful robot about it. For me, Suguru doesn't regret his actions, he regrets that in the grand scheme of things they were useless in bringing about the world he wanted, just like Satoru doesn't regret killing Suguru but regrets not being able to stop him before he spiraled to the point of needing to be killed.

Favorite headcanon
I will always find that scene where Yaga is telling stsg about Tengen and Satoru, clan kid born and raised, is like wtf are u talking about while Suguru, only sorcerer in his family, is like dude u should know this. I just like the idea of Suguru arriving to school day 1, panicking he was so out of his depth and burying himself in the library for a month before he has a better handle on jujutsu history and customs than most clan born sorcerers. (Yes this was also because Satoru 100% zones out whatever isn't interesting to him but cmon, library hermit Suguru.)

Talk to me about OFMD!! 😍 What made you start watching it? What’s your favorite episode or moment? Favorite character and why? Is there anything you really, really need to happen in season 2?
Sorry about your awful job! ❤️
So what made me start watching it is actually YOU. I had heard about the show but wasn't really interested in "another gay pirate show" until I started seeing all your reblogs of it and I just thought "hell, I'll give it a chance" and OMG am I glad I did!
Favorite episode... I can't do that. It would be like choosing between my children. Though I will say up until episode 8, I only "liked" the show, and then the last three episodes made me LOVE it. Favorite moment though... if I had to pick one, it would be the "you wear fine things well" one. If I had to pick two, it would be the kiss but really actually that whole conversation before the kiss is amazing. If I had to pick three, it would be Lucius telling Ed off about being a dick about the treason hunt. And I'll just leave it at three or I'll be at this all day.
Favorite character is Stedward. I can't pick! Like, I relate to Ed more, so I'd probably pick him if you forced me. The whole dark past, being who everyone wants you to be at every moment even if you have to constantly change your personality THING is very me. But then also Stede's late in life realization that he's gay is also... like... ME! I was in my mid-thirties, from a family background that was not homophobic necessarily but that never let me know that it was okay to be gay if I wanted to. So like. Both of them. All of them. The whole damn ship.
I need the reunion not just to happen, but to happen QUICKLY. I have this horrible feeling in my gut that David is going to drag the reunion out and, like, this show is not about suffering. Not really. And I don't want them to suffer for multiple episodes because these boys deserve immense happiness NOW. And also Stede needs to get to Ed before he does anything else stupid.

I had a really good Sunday. I didn't get much done at all, but I got to refresh my head. I went down to the river's edge and hiked to the bridge and back, about four miles all together. The woods are really waking up now that it seems spring is officially here. I'm not sure, but if I had to guess, we probably hit seventy degrees today. There's a tradeoff though, because now my room seems unreasonably hot. I won't open my window, because my screen has holes in it, and I really do not like bats in the house. I love to see them outside, but I do not like them flying around my house. They freak me out, and for some reason or other, rabies scares the absolute hell out of me. I don't mess with wild animals that can bite me and kill me with a disease that looks like something extremely horrible to go through.
I got my first negative "you suck" comments on one of my poems, and, maybe this is weird, but that makes me beyond happy. Sure, getting likes and reblogs, and nice comments are fun and all, but I was waiting until someone thinks I am so awful at what I love to do, that they need to tell me. If it's constructive, I'm all for it, and I will take those opinions with deep consideration, but to those who just tell me I suck, without really knowing anything about what I do, or more importantly WHY i do what i do, I feel sad for. Art critics. The idea of being a critic in any form of art fields is a laugh. Art is subjective. What I write means something different for someone else. What I see in my head is a totally different painting then the one hanging up on the wall. What I hear in music is far off from what someone else's ears hear. And that should be respected. I can't stand Taylor Swift, but I respect her place in the music world. I don't think Van Gogh paintings aren't all the beautiful, but I still consider him one of the masters but I'd put Robert S. Connet on that hill too. Memento dragged on, but Christopher Nolan is one of my favorite directors. And if you see something, and your thought is "wow, this sucks" and not "Let's try to make it better" maybe it's best you just shut the fuck up and let people have their thing. I will always love "You suck" comments, on the simple fact I've pissed one more stranger off.
But now, I'm sitting here, writing this and I'll write a few other lines while watching Melancholia for who knows how many times. I love me some Lars Von Trier films. The guy is a master at his craft. I need a break from Futurama anyway. As much as I love the show, after a bit some of the characters just irritate me and I can't do the show. I'm at a good spot to take a break anyway. The very beginning of the "movie" season.
Hopefully my brother turns up soon. They were headed into town so I sent them with some money to pack me up some soda and pop tarts. Yes, I know. I eat like a twelve year old. I don't care. I don't eat much, and when a strawberry poptart and a coke is all I can get down, it's healthier than not eating anything at all, right? Kind of ironic isn't it? A chef with no appetite. I can't remember the last time I ate something from where I work.
I did forget to take about Jolie yesterday. I've known her for years, as she used to run the kitchen in the American Legion at the same time I first took over the bowling alley kitchen. And we have always gotten along extremely well. It's always a good time when she's around. Just that kind of person. So she left the legion and hasn't done anything in the business since, but her and her husband are looking to buy a restaurant, and she offered me the job to come on has an actual head chef. I mean, I'd get to do menus again, and work with distributors and come up with stuff and have the actual fun parts of the job handed back. Of course, that means I'd also have to do the shitty parts too, budgets, scheduling, budgets, most maintence, did I mention budgets? Still, maybe it's a sign? I've been talking about how badly I want out of the alley, that maybe this is the universe giving me an option to do that, and maybe even re-light the fire and the passion for food to burn bright again?

There was just one thing I enjoyed in this week’s Fear The Walking Dead midseason finale (spoilers ahead): Morgan Jones is gone. Nothing against Lennie James, who is a fine actor and I suppose is doing the best with the absurd scripts he’s given, but I have rarely been so relieved to see a character written off a show. Outside of Ian Goldberg, Andrew Chambliss and Scott Gimple, nobody has done more to ruin this series than Morgan.
At the end of the episode, Morgan takes his adopted daughter, Mo, to Eastman’s graveyard and he sends out a walkie-talkie message to Rick Grimes of all people, a man he hasn’t seen in a decade who is almost certainly not anywhere near, who Morgan would probably not even remember much or care about at this point (we do as viewers, but realistically the other people he’s been friends with for all these years would be much closer friends by now) but who rightly assumes that if there is a way to find him, it’s with the magic walkie-talkies.
The rest of the episode was a jumbled mess. Morgan goes crazy and literally sees red. The screen goes red a bunch of times, as the showrunners drag this gimmick as far as they can. Mo stabs him at one point. At another, his companions leave him sinking in quicksand. At multiple points characters show up to exposit at one another, and other characters who probably should just shoot them fail to do so (more’s the pity).
Finch dies offscreen (seriously?) and then Dwight and Sherry, after all these years, break up. I guess that was alright, given how abhorrent their relationship was. They should never have gotten back together in the first place. What a silly way to end their arc, even if they were terrible for one another. Why were they even in this show to begin with?
Hey, why was PADRE in this show? They talked about it for half of last season, then introduced Shrike as this big bad villain and then killed her off in Episode 6! What?
One thing I also enjoyed: The look of pure happiness on Madison / Kim Dickens’s face when Morgan says he’s leaving. She looks genuinely thrilled to get her show back at long last.
And I suppose that’s where we’re headed in 8B. The new cast is mostly gone, either departing like Morgan or just not showing up this season, mysteriously, like Sarah or the rabbi. We’re left with Madison and Daniel and June, who will reunite with Strand and Luciana. I suppose Dwight and Sherry might still be around, just not together (maybe they’ll get back together in the series finale!) and the big bad will now be none other than Troy Otto.
Troy’s return has been leaked for a while now, but the final scene of this episode shows a mysterious figure with several items: Strand’s sunglasses, Alycia’s arm and the hammer that Madison used to “kill” Troy before the dam blew up quite literally on top of him. Naturally, he has survived all of this and is out for revenge . . . ten years later, give or take. What cartoonish nonsense.
I know some people are excited to see a return to a united original cast (or what’s left of it) and one of the show’s best villains (anti-heroes?) but I have zero faith whatsoever in the people who are producing and writing this show to deliver. I suspect it will be another six episodes of exposition, convenience, walkie-talkies, absurd scenarios and wooden dialogue, culminating in something very similar to what we got in this episode. Can’t wait for them to ruin another character!
Scattered thoughts:
Where did the zombie horde actually go?
Why were they so nice to Shrike in the end? She was a horrible person.
I think my favorite characters this season so far have been Strand and Luciana.
This was another very sloppy episode. I think Shrike was bitten on the other side of the neck from where the wound was shown.
I will reiterate here that I was never a fan of Madison, and her returning to be the main protagonist does not excite me. I liked the idea of her becoming a villain by the end of Fear but now she is just another cardboard person with no real identity outside of her interactions with Morgan.
Mo ended up being pretty ridiculous in the end, disregarding adults, leading children twice her age. She certainly never came across as an eight year old.
Finch’s line “Nobody should have to feel like this” was maybe the one good line, with any real emotional weight, in the entire episode.
