When I was ten, I watched Disney channel, got in trouble because I was up way past my bedtime playing with my Nintendo ds, played in the park with my friends and if I wasn’t I would draw to pass time.
Now, we see children on TikTok, going to Sephora, getting products from 50-900 dollars. And when they get home they try these products, some they can’t pronounce but still got. When I see these videos, first I think “yeiks.” Then, I think “why?”
Perhaps, it’s insecurity. We’ve all been there. With how the world moves today, children have easy access to internet. Perhaps they come across an add manipulating them into thinking that they need these products to be better and beautiful.
Or they see their favourite influencer promoting a product and because they want to support said influencer they get their parent to get them these products. I’m not saying that every influencer is at fault for this, I just feel like some of these parents should be careful with what they let their kids see and do on the internet.
But, let say they know better and don’t buy everything they see on the internet. But, when they walk to school the next day, they see either their friend, or the other kids having “beautiful” skin and a bit of makeup, and they think to themselves “if they can have it, why can’t I?”
Or maybe, it’s the parents? Them making a TikTok of their child going around Sephora, for a “social experiment,” to see how much their kid can get under a certain time frame. They get the product and the parent get their five second of fame. Great right? NO!
They are 10! Some, even younger! Sephora isn’t a playground. And, not to mention, the mess they make for trying them!
Sure when we were younger, we saw our mom put on lipstick and we wanted to try it so we ask. Either we find out it’s weird or it was a great bonding experience. But these children shouldn’t even worry about pimples or have 50-900$ worth of makeup and skincare products to fit in.
I probably sound like a broken record, and I probably don’t add anything to this conversation, but my heart breaks a little when I see these kids, do hauls of the products they got at Sephora, that they do not need.

An Alternative to a Roast
So I watched Netflix's live-action Avatar and, frankly, I didn't like it. I was considering writing an in-depth review tearing it apart. However, after taking in reactions that ranged from one-line Twitter hot takes to in-depth video essays to paid industry reviews from big name media brands, I realized there wasn't much I could add to the discourse that someone else couldn't articulate better.
All that really needs to be said is that it was inferior to its source material in every aspect and incapable of standing on its own merits.
With that out of the way, I'd like to bring attention to a show that more people should watch: Kusuriya no Hitorigoto, known as The Apothecary Diaries in English. To be honest, aside from being strongly inspired by Chinese culture, it's not very similar to ATLA. It's about a commoner girl named Maomao who solves mysteries within the emperor's palace with her knowledge of poisons and medicines. It's a beautifully animated and deeply empathetic series that explores the struggles of living within a rigidly hierarchical society, with special attention paid to the social complexities of being a woman. If you like traditional Chinese fashion, murder mysteries, holistic medicine, well-developed characters, or class consciousness in your stories, give this series a shot!

I might’ve spoiled the plot of Natlan | Genshin Impact THEORY
In which I read so much lore that I gained the power to see the future (maybe) This ended up being a real challenge to make - but it was also really fun! Please do lemme know what you reckon of these ideas, and whether y’all wanna see me pattern-recognition my way into several corkboards worth of theories about any other topics sometime down the line! (^^)/
(also: HAPPY NEW YEAR! 🥳🎉 Here's wishing y'all every good thing for 2024)

Random thought but have you ever noticed that breadtube is...misogynistic? Idk, as someone who used to watch a lot of breadtube (still a leftist, but as I've learned more about leftist politics and movements I find that breadtube often lacks substance - just seems like a lot of rambling without critical thinking/analysis).
Like, I can't help but notice that the lot of them shy away from topics around sex based oppression, male/female socialization, sexploitation etc (and if they're not ignoring it, they're saying that none of it is real and that those are just conservative talking points).
Idk. I just feel like a lot of people would rather watch transwomen talk about how important feminist works are actually bigoted to justify violent, misogynistic feelings toward radical feminists who discuss these things. It feels like they want to intellectualize misogyny and uphold a strawman of radical feminism so that they can validate telling women to shut the fuck up about our oppression. Am I making sense?
yes, you're totally making sense, and I decided to look into that. so I made an Excel list with the most prominent Bread Tubers, the number of their subscribers, their biological sexes and their gender identities:
Tumblr media
if you just look at gender identity, the subscribers seem to be quite evenly distributed between men, women and non-binary people:
Tumblr media
looks kinda fair, right?
but if we look into biological sex...
Tumblr media
it's suddenly clear that biological males gather about 77 percent of the total subscribers, while biological females gather only about 24 percent.
doesn't seem that fair anymore, right?
but it gets even worse when you take into account the male's gender identities...
Tumblr media
there are more subscribers to biological males with female or non-binary gender identities than subscribers to biological females???
I guess there is your answer on why bread tube does not cover issues of sexism and sex-based oppression.
...and that is why an analysis based on biological sex is important and trying to erase it will let us believe that we are closer to equality between the sexes than we actually are

Holy crap I completely forgot I attempted to download the entire Unus Annus channel right before it got deleted. I just found an old hard drive in my desk I forgot I even had, and like - dude. I have no idea how many videos are on here but it HAS to be in the triple digits, including thumbnails. This is friggin' insane.

i recognize and acknowledge not everyone likes hasanabi. i understand why people disagree with and even dislike him-
however, as war pushes on against Palestine hasan piker’s coverage remains consistent and intelligent. he knows what he’s talking about, does an incredible job of weeding through propaganda and bogus stories and is actively supporting the people of Palestine.
if you struggle to find sources to trust or don’t know where to start when researching/understanding Israel’s apartheid against Palestine i would suggest watching his clips on youtube.
**if you can’t stomach watching him, i have links to the vid he reacts to that are good for understanding what is happening to Palestine.
***please learn so you can support🇵🇸

Bones I don't have anyone else to turn to, and you're INCREDIBLY informed on the subject. How do you write characters who the audience WANTS to be redeemed? Especially without being able to reliably pull a 'What you are in the dark' trope like how Breezepaw eases up when away from his dad.
Any tips for how to write a good redemption/'recovery', especially one where the character has to unlearn ideas they grew up on?
Advice from me is almost always going to be double, triple, QUADRUPLE underlining; CHARACTERS ARE NOT PEOPLE THEY ARE TOOLS.
Think about WHAT YOU'RE SAYING with this story. What are you trying to accomplish, besides simply having a fun villain join the main cast?
For Breezepelt, I want to dive into him finally recognizing his own flaws. I want him to realize he does have problems he needs to work on, but that he's LOVED, and his life has value! That it's never too late to do the right thing, and that happiness is within reach. A very character-driven arc.
For another character, a redemption arc could be a really good opportunity to unpack how the "bad guys" are recruited and indoctrinated. Zuko from Avatar is the best example of that, but you can also look at Peridot from Steven Universe. It's our introduction to how Homeworld Gems talk about planet colonization. Her story up to mouthing off at Yellow Diamond is essentially unpacking and rejecting the Homeworld mindset.
There's a billion ways and reasons to do a redemption arc! Show how an environment can change a person! Talk about how power acted on them! Explore what happens to an empire's underling when they start having doubts about their cause!
Think about what it can do FOR your story, and what juicy ideas you can show during it.
And... a BAD redemption arc, imo, is one that grinds your story to a halt by removing a main driver of conflict (the POINT of an antagonist), and is done for a character who has absolutely no reason to want to change.
What are your antagonist's motivations? WHY do they act the way they do? What would it take for them to willingly give up what they currently have, for something else? If they were forced out of their position and suddenly offered it all back, what would it take for them to accept the deal?
And, most importantly, do you still have a goddamn plot if this character has a turnaround? Or maybe is the story ending with this redemption! What does the redemption say for your characters and themes?

I'm doing something I don't usually do, posting a link to YouTube, to Stephen Fry reading a letter about Large Language Models, popularly if incorrectly known as AI. Iin this case the discussion is about ChatGPT but the letter he reads, written by Nick Cave, applies to the others as well. The essence of art, music, writing and other creative endeavors, from embroidery to photography to games to other endeavors large and small is the time and care and love that some human being or beings have put into it. Without that you can create a commodity, yes, but you can't create meaning, the kind of meaning that nurtures us each time the results of creativity, modern or of any time, pass among us. That meaning which we share among all of us is the food of the human spirit and we need it just as we need the food we give to our bodies.

Isaac's encounter with Renee
Transcript:
Vincent: We'll look into the Sterling-Rico family for this scam. Let's win this case ok? Isaac: I will do my best. Why are you so eager to win this one anyway? Vincent: Felix is family really [smiles] he's my partner's grandad, so I don't want to mess up.
[Isaac was surprised to hear Vincent's relations to the Reichmanns and wanted to ask more] Renee: [runs up to them and jumps into Vincent's arms] Vince! Surprised to see me? Vincent: What are you doing in Evergreen Harbour? I thought you were heading to work this morning.
Renee: I know you've got Grandad's case and I'm actually free today! Thought I'd hop on the train here. [It was definitely awkward hearing them converse like he wasn't there. He wanted to interrupt, but it was also great to see Vincent be casual. Maybe he'll open up to him since he's seeing some of his personal life]
Vincent: Ahem Isaac, this is my girlfriend Renee. Isaac: It's a pleasure to meet you Renee [pauses for a split second] Reichmann. Renee: Likewise Isaac, I hope Vince is treating you well at work.
