Image ID: A green slime girl (named Guz) tenderly holding a yellow slime girl (Slamtha). Slamtha is curled up sitting in fetal position on the ground and looks shocked or scared, and Guz looks concerned and is kneeling down and wrapping her arms around her. Slamtha has three eyes (only two are visible to the viewer) and an offset mouth, and she is wearing a red dress, and Guz is wearing a starfleet engineering uniform as seen during the mid-2380s flashbacks in Star Trek Picard season 1, that is, a black jumpsuit with yellow stripes and angular yellow shoulder pattern with a delta-shield badge on the left breast. They are on the ground on a young volcanic planet with a volcanic moon in the sky that has just been hit with a major impact, with a cone of debris spewing out. the sky is alight with bright meteors, including one which has hit the ground near the horizon line. This drawing was actually a request from my friend Ray. The background was going to be pretty much an afterthought, until I asked him what it should be, and he told me it should be some kind of dangerous planet. The planet is a young world, only a few million years old. The haze across the sky is the zodiacal light, which shines bright enough to see during the day and is made up of a dense cloud of asteroids and protoplanets still in the process of accreting. The moon in the sky is somewhat like what the Earth’s moon looked like 3-4 billion years ago, although the timeline of lunar volcanism and major impact basin formation are not the same and the volcanism was probably a lot subtler with less permanent standing bodies of molten lava. Artistic license!

And then Ray, the madlad, wrote a whole piece of short fiction about the drawing, which you can read under the cut!

All of a sudden, the whipping, snarling beast choked on her howls. The watery gargle in her throat grew as loud as her scream, and she wordlessly pleaded for something more secret, something that stung much deeper than all of Slamtha's words before.

  Her eyes snapped closed. She twisted her head to one side to gather herself and block out the bile of emotion that had lodged itself in her throat. As she wrestled herself, the wetness around her brow trickled down and over her eyes, threatening to seal the seam of her sight.   "This is your fault." She spat when she forced her eyes open again, honey oozing down her cheeks. Guz clutched the heart of her uniform into her palm and tightened her jaw. Whether Slamtha meant their accidental displacement to this erupting planet or how she's presently at her end of her rope, whichever hurt more would certainly be her intention.

  Guz took one step forward, and Slamtha took one step backward. She squeezed her fists together. Why was she moving away? She was falling apart!   "I want to help you!" She cringed through her falter. It was always the same. She abided by Starfleet's core values with ample questioning for her duties, but when it came to Slamtha, this irrational, desperate part reared its ugly head without a second thought. She wasn't a hero. She wasn't a savior. Yet, despite this, she'd plunge far beyond her station to claw at the one who slipped between her fingers. Slamtha ebbed back before collapsing on the ground entirely when a wild, rocky projectile blasted against the ground. Guz dashed over again, betraying herself, but her golden hands smacked Guz's away when she neared.

  "Stay away from me." She seethed. "I don't want your help." She sobbed. "I can-"

  Guz was cradling Slamtha close again. The tile flooring of the university building was sterile against her form, but everything felt barren back then. She felt Slamtha's breathing slow through the pressure around her chest. Her hiccups subsided, and they sat alone there, despite the passersby, for what seemed like hours.

  The impact a few yards away torched the lingering memory. Slamtha pulled herself close to her knees. Suddenly, a weight clasped over top of hers once more. The feeling of droplets landing on her shoulder and shirt was a wordless resignation. While she screamed at herself to run, there was a pull more immense than her fear that kept her rooted.

Egy világjárvány árnyékában I.

... Avagy amikor még nem nagyon tudtuk, mi vár ránk. Bőven elkésve, hisz 2022 október végét írunk majdnem. Nem állt meg az élet azóta, sőt! 

2020 januárjában nem is nagyon foglalkoztunk ezzel a járványhelyzettel. Nem is nagyon volt mitől aggódni, félni. Az élet ment a megszokott módján, mi meg mentünk ki az éjszakába néha-néha. 

Az év egy félárnyékos holdfogyatkozással indult január 10-én, amikor fényes égi kísérőnk egy része a Föld félárnyékába került. Szabad szemmel csak úgy látványos egy ilyen jelenség, hogy az ember tudja, hogy mit kell keresnie a Holdon. 

Fotografikusan sokkal látványosabb volt, illetve digitálisan a színek erősítve lettek abból a célból, hogy előhozzák a Holdon az ásványok színeit, illetve akár a Föld légkörében megtörő napfény színét.

Telihold alkalmával mélyeget, Tejutat, sok csillagot nem lehet nagyon fotózni... meg látni se. Azonban ha látjuk, hogy Telihold van, akkor utána érdemes várni egy hetet kb. és akkor már égi kísérőnk “túl későn” kel, egyfajta időablakot látrehozva, ahol a háborítatlan csillagos eget lehet lefotózni.

Egy 50mm-es mozaikfotónak hatalmas lehet a felbontása, emiatt könnyebben lehet kezelni a csillagokat rajta és sokkal jobban kijönnek a részletek, noha a felvétel olyan körülmények között készült, hogy csak akkor abban az időszakban volt ott derült az ég... mindenhol máshol felhős, párás idő gyakorlatilag lehetetlenné tette az észlelést, fotózást.

Érdemes a képen megkeresni pld. az Orion csillagképet, ám a legnagyobb különlegesség a random foltokban van, pld. a kép vízszintes közepétől a kép bal harmadán egy kósza folt látszódik, mely valójában az Ellenfény / Gegenschein, ahol a bolygóközi poron szóródik a Nap fénye és ahol annak ellenpontja van. Az Ellenfény annyira halvány, hogy pld. a Téli Tejút fénye a kép közepén túlragyogná. ( Nyilván ott is látszódik kb. egy hónappal korábban. )

Az egész csillagos égről is lehet mozaikfelvételt készíteni, melyet különböző vetületekben meg lehet jeleníteni. A teljeségboltos fotókon jól látszódik a Tejút sávja, de jól megfigyelhető a légkör rétegződése is. 

A 60 képes felvételen a téli hexagon látható. Hasonlóan a Nagy Nyári Háromszöghöz, eme alakzat is csillagokból áll.  Nyaranta a klasszikus Nagy Nyári Háromszög látszódik jól ( Vega - Deneb - Altair ) Télen viszont a fényesebb csillagokból egy hatszöget is össze lehet rakni. Háromszög már jólismert: Szíriusz, Betelgeuse, Procyon. A háromszöget kibővítve Pollux, Capella és Aldebaran csillagokkal megkapjuk a hexagont. Amikor az égbolt alatt képzeletben összekötjük, akkor hatalmasnak látszódik az egész.

Télen gyakori a párásodás, “beködölés” esténként. Ahogy leszáll az est, úgy kezd telítődni az alsó légréteg a kisugárzás miatt. Néha a szél meg-megindítja ezt a párafolyamot a völgyekből a dombtetőkre is. 

Egy derült, csillagos ég alatt hömpölygő és egyre vastagodó ködnek meglehetősen kísérteties hangulata van.

A Zselici Csillagpark felett a legfényesebb “csillag” nem csillag, hanem a Vénusz, melyet Esthajnalcsillagnak hívnak, teljesen logikusan, hisz vagy este látszódik pár hónapot, vagy hajnalonta van keleten. A Vénusz felhőzetéről visszaverődő napfény miatt gyakorlatilag a harmadik legfényesebb objektum címét viseli a Földről nézve. 

A ködös égbolt sejtelmes, úgynevezett pártát hoz létre, ahogy a Vénusz fénye elhajlik a lebegő vízcseppeken. 

A párta sokkal feltűnőbb a képen, mint a távcső segédtükörtartó lábain meghajló fény által létrejött diffrakciós tüske. Nyilván máshogyan kell a bolygót lefotózni, hogy látszódjon a felhőzete, de ebben az esetben a mélyégfotós rendszerrel egy rövidebb expozíció szolgált demonstrációként.

A ködösség láttán az embert amolyan halloween-i feeling fogja el, bár  csupasz fák ... még nincsenek október végén. Érdekes, hogy a Csillagpark kilátójából nézve még teljesen derült volt az ég, hisz ilyenkor az kilóg még a ködmezőből. Később azonban a kilátót is elnyelte a szürke ködösség.

Egy-egy sötét, astrodarkos szezon után mindig holfényes, világos esték következnek. Az esti távcsöves bemutatóknál a holdfény nem akadályozó tényező, ám annál zavaróbb. 

Holdfény esetén, főleg Teliholdnál csak a legfényesebb csillagok és néhány mélyég-objektum látszódik csak. A távcsőtől balra a Szíriusz ragyog, míg jobbra fent az Orion csillagkép látható.

Ahogy a Hold ismét egyre később kel Telihold után, úgy februártól már jól megfigyelhető az Állatövi fény. Talán a legideálisabb hónap az, melynél esténként nyugaton dereng a bolygóközi por által szóródó napfény.

A jelenség olyan erős, hogy faluból a reflektorok fénye mellett jól látható volt. Noha az Állatövi fényt fényszennyezéstől távol, holdfénymentes égen lehet jól megfigyelni. 

A teljeségboltos felvételen jobbra van nyugat, míg lent dél. A fénypiramis jobbról fényesedik fel és megy egészen a városfényig keleten. Az égbolt minősége a Bortle skálán kb. 4, ahol a kép készült, ami azt jelenti, hogy pld az Állatövi fény még látható, viszont horizonton körbe fényszennyezés van. A Tejút látszódik, az Androméda galaxis még látszódik, de az M33 galaxis már kb. nem.  

Az állatövi fényről számos felvételt készítettem már, melyeknek majd a következő irományban lesz hely. Elég sok idő eltelt 2020 februárja óta és igaz a világ bizonyos időszakban félig-meddig lebénult, de az asztrotájképekből és a mélyégfotókból nem volt hiány a járvány kitörése után sem, sőt...

You can watch for the zodiacal light starting around February 26 until around March 12, right after the new moon.

Mid-March will feature lovely scenes of a young crescent moon, placed in the midst of the zodiacal light. What’s more, bright Jupiter and Mercury will be in the west after sunset then, too, so they’ll be visible with the zodiacal light. Southern Hemisphere? Look east before dawn. " @EarthSky
