The A does not fucking stand for ally

I am asexual and aromantic and proud of it, and I am just as much a part of the community, just as queer, as any of my trans, gay, and mspec siblings.

Vent below (:

I realize that I'm sometimes a little optimistic, but I did really think that this wasn't an issue anymore, except for those terminally online exclusionists and the well-meaning but uninformed.

I did not expect it to be an issue at a college event's queer resource center table.

They had some buttons and stickers that I was pawing through. I didn't really expect my sunset aroace flag, since but I'm aware it's not terribly well known, but had hope for an ace and an aro button. Maybe with cute puns.

I found one generic ace sticker- a little heart, on a roll with several other flags. Including polysexual, omnisexual, pan, and bi. Amongst the buttons were many more obscure flags, like polyamorous, genderfluid, and agender.

And honestly even thought it bites, I usually get it! I'm used to it, you have to pick and choose your flags, right? Asexual isn't in the big 4 and aromantic is even less well known.

But to include polysexual and omnisexual alongside bi and pan, to include agender but not asexual or aromantic???

And I'm genuinely ecstatic they got recognition to be clear! I was very glad to see the polyam button especially, since I've never seen the flag in person before! But including so many more obscure identities and microlables when the term asexual has been around since the infancy of Pride, and aromantic is literally almost as old as me, give or take a year??

But what was worse to me was that they had a little calendar of events- I can't even remember the specific one, something like a discussion group?- but whatever it was, was titled LGBTQ & A.

As in: and allies. It just-

I get not wanting to use the extended acronym, it's bulky and hard to be inclusive even when you use the plus, and that's why I use queer. But then to say A is for ally?

I admit I feel kinda petty about being so hurt. But I have a right to my anger and frustration and sadness when the community I stand with that is supposed to stand by me just. Doesn't. Doesn't even acknowledge that yes love is love but some people don't and we're with them too!

I'm almost completely unable to interact with the community irl. To have this be one of my first, indirect as it was, leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I don't think that this was an accurate picture of the center, and I have hope that it's better than it presented itself here.

The A is for asexual and aromantic (and agender too, if they want to use it). Not allies. I didn't think that visibility was too much to ask.

Second to last day of Pride Month, and gearing up for Wrath Month (unofficial, for now), we are talking about white supremacy, colonialism, and how to keep that nonsense out of ace and aro spaces! These are just some points and some ideas on the topics - we really encourage everyone to reflect and support your local aspecs of color. And call that shit out when you see it.

Image one reads “White Supremacy and Ace or Aro Identity. White supremacy and imperialism have strongly impacted most discourse around sexuality, orientation, and relationships. Here are some common sayings that have roots in racism, imperialism, and/or colonialism: "Aces and aros of color are hard to find." - While some ace and aro spaces are definitely white dominated, this should NOT be treated as a natural thing. It should be questioned why a space has such little racial diversity and what barriers exist that keep POC out. Also, with online spaces, many people presume white and American as the default even when it is not necessarily reflective of the space.”

POC are never going to have a "normal" sexuality because their bodies are considered inherently "abnormal". "Normal" is a weapon of the state, and queer activists would do better to not wield it.”

A new proposal for the aspec community 🖤💜💚

Recently, I was discussing personal attitudes towards romance with my QPP, and we thought about how personal attitudes towards romance/sex shouldn’t only be about whether one finds them disgusting, unsettling, uninteresting or enjoyable, but should also include other feelings. It is how we came up with the term romance/sex-wrathful.

Now wrathful might refer to a series of feelings that cause anger, irriation or burning rage at the way our amatonormative society constantly shoves romance/ partnered sex in our faces, in ways that present them as the ultimate goal, the ultimate pleasure, the cure-all of all problems in life and something everyone desires and should strive for. 

This can manifest for a number of reasons for the people who feel it:

a. They might feel it is unnecessary and overrated

b. They might be angered at the importance the world puts at it and the pressure to fInD a RoMaNtIc/SeXuAl PaRtNeR

c. They don’t understand it, and that pisses them off because it’s EVERYWHERE

d. They might be angered at the way it is portrayed in the media, and the stupid limitations/expectations they spread about it

Queerplatonic relationships are relationships that are not romantic & don't fit the description of platonic either. There's a level of commitment, dedication, and effort that you wouldn't give a friendship that you DO HAVE with your queerplatonic partner. Just Google it please 🧐. Friendly reminder that amatonormativity is the belief that everyone is better off in a monogamous romantic relationship and that those relationships are more important than any others!! Amatonormativity is what has unconsciously made everyone assume that their romantic partner is more important then their best friends and why most people tend to leave good friendships for their romantic partners; is what leads people to enter toxic romantic relationships for the sake of not being single bc everyone is "better off" with a romance.

Amatonormativity is a harmful belief against everyone really, not just aspecs (but it harms us the most). It's what discriminates against other kinds of relationships (friendships, family, poly relationships, queerplatonic, etc.) by making romantic relationships central and places them on a pedestal higher up than any other type of relationship. Don't compare a queerplatonic relationship with the damage amatonormativity has done, please 😤

I keep seeing posts on any given social media that use asexual synonymous with aspec or just view aromanticism as a subset of asexuality and on one hand at this point it fills me with righteous wrath, on the other hand I simply don't have the energy to deal with it. It's just incredibly frustrating, especially because it's not just allos, I've seen many asexuals and even aroaces do it too and I know it's probably not malicious but the sheer amount is just. demotivating. Asexuals get a lot more attention than aromantics and when things might be relevant to us we're still grouped under asexual.

Who are my top 5 comfort characters?

I mean, they interchange depending on my current hyperfixation, but...

1) Ratchet (Transformers, particularly Bayverse): I love the grumpy old medibot that’s allowed to be Not Nice while still clearly being a good guy. But I love him in Bayverse the most for how while that could still be present, it’s not the main focus of his character; he’s implied to be a lot more kindly or at least polite than other incarnations. Sure, the actual films don’t really go into his character much, but I’ve fallen in love with what we’ve got of him nonetheless. Just this worn-torn and tired old man mech that remains kind in spite of everything, values life, and makes the most out of his new home on Earth by enjoying its beauty. And also he’s handsome. I mean that unironically. Not only is he physically handsome, but god his voice...

2) Gordon (Catscratch): Gordon has been with me since I was probably 9 years old. I always adored him for his courage, his sense of justice, and his kindness. Also, much like him, I love to eat. I kinda connected to him since I saw the promos for the show before the first episode debuted. So much so that getting inside the house and down the basement on time to catch the premiere was an event for me. But anyway, of all the hyperfixations on cartoons I had as a kid, Catscratch is the one that stuck with me. Probably because it came out during a weird time in my life, when I kinda started to notice that I wasn’t like my peers. So, during that confusing time, I had Gordon; I’ll always cherish him for that.

3) Stranger (Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath): Stranger is me. From his being sort of socially inept despite his intimidating demeanor to his isolation to the fact that he’s constantly disguising himself both for his own safety and because he doesn’t think he deserves to present as what he really is to him being mostly self-serving... Yep. Stranger is me. His story resonates with me the way so few main characters in any media do. Like yeah, I relate to Abe from the same franchise, too, but Stranger is like Oddworld Inhabitants made an allegory for my life, made it into a video game, and made me a cool cowboy centaur creature. But the question remains: do I relate to Stranger’s journey of self-acceptance as an autistic person, as an nonbinary person, or as a person that’s both aspec and arospec? The answer is yes.

4) Cookie (Rayman: The Animated Series): Cookie is both me and what I wish I could allow myself to be. Simply put: Cookie sucks. He’s cranky, complains constantly, and is full of anxiety that holds him back from truly embracing his freedom after escaping captivity at the circus. It’s not that he sucks: it’s that he’s allowed to suck. And that sounds like a weird reason to like a character, especially since that’s the exact reason why many other people that have viewed this obscure little cartoon find him really annoying. However, as an autistic person that didn’t get diagnosed until later in life and therefore feels the need to mask constantly, it’s kind of important for me to see that and analyze what it means to me. Cookie isn’t adventurous like the rest of the main crew are, and that’s something he and the others have to deal with. His friends may get upset with him for his constant complaining, but he still says what’s on his mind and allows himself to feel, all while still clearly being a competent adult with a skillset that his friends are heavily reliant on.

5) Hunch (Rock-A-Doodle): Possibly being an even stranger choice for a comfort character than Cookie, Hunch came at a point in my life where I knew I was probably mentally ill, but didn’t bother bringing it up with my parents because I knew they weren’t going to do anything about it. I was about to turn 15 when curiosity got the better of me one quiet morning and made me sit through Rock-A-Doodle in like 15 parts on YouTube (yes, really). I had watched the Nostalgia Critic review of it, but the critic never mentioned this manic little dude. So I got attached to him right away because it was like I discovered him myself. And I’m not sure if I liked him at the time because he made for a good projection of my own anxiety, depression, and god knows what else, or just because he was a funny little owl that sucked at being evil. Either way, he’s the reason why I have a soft spot for obscure-ish, non-threatening evil henchmen today, like the weasel guardsmen from Conker’s Bad Fur Day or Killer from All Dogs Go to Heaven. Either of those characters could be in this same spot, but something about Hunch’s cackling, manic nature puts him above the rest for me. Or it could be the fact that he suffers abuse at the hands of a family member that he spends the duration of the film trying to impress, and then at the end gets to chase that same abusive family member away into the sunrise and presumably eats him. Aaaah, karma.

(so disclaimer for all of these, i’m pretty flexible with my queer headcanons especially wrt shipping!)

Finarfin: Mostly straight, very faithful to Earwen. Had a hard time adjusting to Earwen and Anaire’s relationship after the Flight of the Noldor, but he loves his wife so much that in the end he can’t really be anything other than supportive. Especially since he hurt Earwen by leaving, even if he did end up coming back.

So yeah, he’s mostly just really in love with his wife, but. BUT. i am also fond of Finarfin/Eonwe, so- I think he and Eonwe became very close during the War of Wrath, and Ara kind of started crushing on him, except like, is it really a crush? this is just bros being bros right? and he’s not gay, nah, so like...but what if it is tho?? and Eonwe is completely oblivious, not just to Ara’s feelings but to his own too, until like. after things settle down and Ara confesses to Earwen and she’s like “oooh, exciting” and romcom hijinks ensue, except things are awkward because Eonwe is the herald of Manwe (I have some particular hcs about Valarin sexuality, esp Manwe) and in the end Ara and Eonwe are like, not really sure what’s up between them and are mostly just bros...but also a little bit not. that’s a long and complicated way of me saying that they’re queerplatonic, lmao

Thorin: ooohhh boy. I was put off bagginshield for a long time because of the intensity of the fandom around them, and now I’m kind of on board, but like, Only Aspec Bagginshield Please. so i think Thorin is demi, attraction is like, literally the last thing on his mind; I have a soft spot for Dworin so in some verses I think they’ve got a thing going on? They’re definitely extremely close. But what I’m trying to get at, I guess, is that Bilbo is the first/only person Thorin’s like, actually confused and worried about possibly being in love with?? And my brain hurts if I try to think about Bilbo not being in the Shire to raise Frodo, even in the sappiest Bagginshield Everyone Lives AUs, so I think that Bagginshield is more of a ship doomed to pine than anything else, and them both being aspec makes that...easier, I guess? Like Thorin has feelings for Bilbo, but never planned his life around including someone like that, his devotion to Erebor and his people is much more important- if he and Bilbo do get their shit together it would have to be long-distance, because Bilbo loves the Shire and especially loves Frodo after he adopts him, and LOTR is practically impossible if Bilbo remained in Erebor. So yeah. Also, Thorin is trans, I don’t make the rules

Fingolfin: Lol, both Ara and Nolo are characters I’ve had some Thoughts about this ever since writing ATATYA, but since that fic is about the Feanorians I didn’t really get to explore his side of things. Anyway: Nolo is bisexual, but he kind of repressed himself until arriving in Middle-earth. He and Anaire had a good relationship for the most part, but when he started going overboard (in her eyes) with his attempts to make things right with Feanaro, they started to fight. Anaire and Earwen kind of always had mutual feelings for each other that they never acted on because they both loved their respective husbands, but when both the bros left during the Flight of the Noldor they went “fuck it” and got together. (As I mentioned above, Ara coming back complicated things, but after that it was very much “it’s us against the world”)

But back to Nolo: he and Anaire had a pretty terrible breakup right before he left, and when he didn’t come back but Ara did, he kind of assumed that Anaire would never want anything to do with him again, their marriage bond was pretty fucked up and while he was definitely still in love with her he kind of considered their relationship over. So he was basically single in Beleriand, and in a place like that, without the kind of rules he was used to in Valinor, he was freer to experiment, and that’s when he figured out he liked dudes too. I think he was with a couple mortal men (like Hador!) and while that was mostly good for him, he still was in love with Anaire and never settled down with anyone else (like another elf) because of that. He spent a lot of his time in Mandos being melodramatic about his marriage (and I’m teasing, but like, shit does suck, rip Nolo)- but by the time he was released, Anaire had had a long time to mull over what he’d done, and she decided she’d give him another chance. So I think they’re back together, but with a similar sort of thing Ara and Earwen have going on, because Earwen and Anaire are not letting each other go, and Nolo kind of has to prove himself to his wife. Which he is absolutely willing to do.

Also, mostly unrelated headcanon: post-reembodiment Nolofinwe is a funky grandpa who just loves spending time with his kids and takes them camping all the time. Arakano and Irisse love this; Findekano is just happy his family’s back together; Turukano is not a fan but goes along because he knows he should, and it’s a good excuse to try and reconnect with Maeglin who also hates the camping trips (but loves being included)

Arwen: i don’t have any set headcanons for her, I do like Aragorn/Arwen, I also enjoy Arwen/Tauriel, I’m down for whatever wrt to her. she’s probably bi? and I think she’s demiromantic, because she was by herself for a very long time before Aragorn came along, so it was probably a surprise to her that she had feelings for anyone at all, and she went 100% in on that relationship. until death do ye part, and all that...
