Here we have the Internet's favourite salamander, the adorable axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum). What makes it unique is its paedomorphism; it doesn't undergo metamorphosis and thus looks the same as its younger self. It was actually named after Xolotl, an Aztec deity who transformed himself to an axolotl in order to avoid being sacrificed by other deities. Axolotl also means "water monster" in Nahuatl. Axolotls are indigenous to Mexico City, though their native habitat is at risk.
