🔒 To Speak Up
by Vrishchika (@vrishchikawrites)
M, 6k, Wangxian
Summary: To be silent is to be complicit. Kay's comments: I've re-read this story numerous times and it always goes so hard. Vrishchika decided to apply what we know of the novel canon Jiang family dynamics in a modern AU and suddenly, it feels much more icky than it already did in canon. Luckily, Wangxian are already established in this story and Wei Wuxian has the Lans and Wens looking out for him as well. Still, it's heart-breaking how willing he is to bear it. Excerpt: Wen Qing is tempted to push but she doesn't, she can't. She can't bear the thought of this kind boy, her little brother's best friend, dealing with his wounds alone. Because that’s what he’ll do if she shows too much worry. Wei Wuxian is ruthlessly practical and doesn’t like to be vulnerable. If he thinks he’s troubling her, he’ll find someone else to care for his wounds. Someone less competent. His back is littered with scars and Wen Qing wonders at the extent of his nerve damage. She prays there's nerve damage because the alternative is chronic pain from the extensive scarring. She aches to drag him to her hospital and get him examined thoroughly. Wei Wuxian is a strong, athletic man and if she hadn’t seen his scarring up-close, she would’ve never believed he had any. "You will eventually need to address these, Wuxian." She tosses the soiled cloth away and carefully applies an antibiotic ointment on the wounds, "I'm prescribing you painkillers and some antibiotics to help avoid infection. You will take them religiously." Wuxian huffs, "I always take medicine, Qing-jie."
pov alternating, pov outsider, modern setting, modern no powers, dysfunctional jiang family, jiang family dynamics, bad parents jiang fengmian and yu ziyuan, not jiang cheng friendly, hurt/comfort, established relationship, families of choice, child abuse, blood and injury, hurt wei wuxian, caring lan wangji, good uncle lan qiren, good sibling lan xichen, child neglect, no jiang cheng & wei wuxian reconciliation

All it took was a simple lie.
Jiang Fengmian was tired of the accusations, of the rumors on the streets, of the scorn from his wife. Ever since he had brought little Wei Ying back from the streets, Jiang Fengmian had to deal with so much stress. But it was worth it. To care for the child of his best friends, it was worth it.
It was true that he loved Cangse. He loved her personality, her laugh, the freedom she represented. But the moment she rejected him, Jiang Fengmian had backed off and stuck with friendship instead. It wouldn’t have worked out between them anyways. Cangse lived her freedom and that was the one thing Jiang Fengmian couldn’t give her. So he was sontent with the friendship and even more so when she proposed to Wei Changze.
The two of them, his most favorite people in the world, would get married and stay in Lotus Pier. They would help him teach his disciples, show them the joys and hardships of life, help him out with the sect.
But that kind of wishful thinking was shattered when he was forced to marry Yu Ziyuan. Jiang Fengmian never wanted her. True, she was a strong, capable woman. But her personality grated against his and he knew he would crumble beneath her. But it was his terrible mother’s wish to see them married and he could not go against her as his father supported the marriage as well.
So he got engaged to Yu Ziyuan and had to get to know her. And she….wasn’t as bad as he thought her to be. Sure, she was volatile but underneath all of that, she was a wonderful woman. That’s what he thought, at least, until he found out that she had forced his friends away from Lotus Pier.
Evidently, rumors about his previous infatuation with Cangse had reached her ears and with his mother’s help, kicked Wei Changze and Cangse Sanren away from him.
Jiang Fengmian grew resentful of the two after that. But perhaps he should have done more to comfort Yu Ziyuan that he didn’t like Cangse that way.
Well, what’s done is done. He can’t change the past. But he can do something right now.
He had found Wei Ying sobbing and on the floor, a red handprint on his cheek with Yu Ziyuan standing over him.
With a shout, he gathered Wei Ying towards him and questioned Yu Ziyuan, “Why did you hit him?!”
The woman scoffed. “Why can’t I? He caused trouble so he should be punished for it.”
“He’s nine! What kind of trouble could he have caused?”
“Does it matter?” She sneered. “You would always have come to this brat’s rescue. Even though you would never do the same for our son! Or am I right? That this brat is your child with that woman!!”
“I have never even touched Cangse in that manner, how dare you! I would never betray Changze like that!!”
“Well how am I supposed to know?! He looks so similar to you! And with the way that that woman flirted, you would think—”
“YU ZIYUAN! Don’t you dare complete that sentence!! There’s a child here!”
“Oh? Why can’t I? That brat deserves to hear what kind of a woman his mother was!”
Jiang Fengmian shook with anger. Without thinking too much, he blurted out something to make her stop. (Something he wished was true.) “Wei Ying is my nephew, San-Niang!! Wei Changze was my half brother! Why wouldn’t I care for the last reminder of him?!”
Silence reigned in the room save for Jiang Fengmian’s enraged breaths and Wei Ying’s sniffling.
“…..What?” Yu Ziyuan breathed. “He’s…..”
Jiang Fengmian just computed what he said. But he would push forward with it. “He’s my nephew. My father had a tryst with a woman and Changze was born. I never knew until my father had told me so on his deathbed.” Jiang Fengmian could only thank the starts that both his parents were dead and wouldn’t be able to contest against this. “I never brought it up to save our reputation. Are you happy now?”
Yu Ziyuan still seemed in shock so Jiang Fengmian took this time to retreat.
“I hope I never see anything like this again, my lady.”
He closed the door.

Was thinking about Jiang Cheng last night, and what I understood of his character– and especially of his relationship with Wei Wuxian, because obviously, every aspect of his character is shown through the lens of their relationship owing to the fact that Wei Wuxian is the main character.
I don't think it's a bad thing, but I do wish that we could have got some serious in-depth of a lot of characters from their own perspectives, but it works for me and my overactive brain to fill in the gaps.
I genuinely feel heartbroken over their relationship because I know that the love is there, and always will be. Even if it's now tainted with too many harsh words and spilt blood, the love is still there. The problem lies in how Jiang Cheng was raised.
At first, I used to think that Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan are not that bad of parents but after thinking over it, I have realised that they are not good either. In fact, when it comes to Jiang Cheng, they did a terrible job. JFM essentially neglected JC because of his similarity to his mother, leaving him craving for love. YZY on the other hand, constantly put him down by comparing him to WWX.
Both of these things became a core part of how JC thinks and feels. He never received unconditional love from his parents, and his relationship was strained with WWX, but he still loves them all. He is a classic Slytherin, in my opinion. He is definitely ambitious and loves his cultivation but another thing that I characterize Slytherins by is the difference in which they treat those inside their circle and outside their circle.
So, for JC, the people inside this circle are: JFM, YZY, WWX & JYL (and afterwards JL, but that's inconsequential to this post since I'm focusing more on the JC before WWX's resurrection). Even if they treat him badly, he loves them to death. He would go to the world's end for them, and all he wants in return is for them to be by his side.
Which is what WWX fails to do after the Wen situation. (I'm not blaming him, I totally support WWX's decision; I'm just painting it from JC's pov.) At a time when he had lost his parents and JYL was getting married and going away, the only tether for him was WWX– so when he chose the Wens (outsiders, for JC) and demonic cultivation over him, it was betrayal for him.
I believe there are 3 feelings that ruined their relationship, from JC's side: ① betrayal ② jealousy ③ loneliness.
The feeling of betrayal ties in to the loneliness heavily. At the root of everything is the fact that JC struggles with love; he loves deeply, but doesn't quite know how to express it at times because his own parents were lousy at doing that. (I wanna give him a tight hug so bad ugh.)
The jealousy... Well, that's the factor that ruined it the most. And I believe that if only JFM had looked past the fact that JC's mother is YZY, and had loved him as freely as he did WWX, and if YZY had not constantly compared them, then JC could have grown up without the compulsive need to constantly compare himself to WWX. It's not that he does it on purpose, but something that's wired in him because of the glaring difference in them that his parents keep pointing out, whether it's with his actions or her words.
The thing is... WWX was literally the worst person to compare himself to. He was literally a genius, a prodigy, a once-in-a-generation kind of cultivator. And also a classic Gryffindor example. Brave, reckless and strong sense of justice. That's what marks the main difference between them.
JC would choose his family/inner circle over justice. WWX would choose justice over his family/inner circle.
Those feelings of betrayal, jealousy and loneliness come out in the form of misplaced anger and hatred in the 13 years WWX is gone on every person who does demonic cultivation. I feel like JC was trying to find him too, but it was in equal parts love and equal parts hatred.
The point in the climax when he gets angry at WWX and mocks him about how good he is, and constantly better than JC that he even gives away his golden core– that scene hurt me so much. I was really upset with him, but well, his words struck me. Even now, he is still comparing himself to WWX. He has always tried to catch up to the image of WWX, in hopes of gaining his mother's pride and his father's love and even long after they are gone, he feels the need to prove himself to the rest of the world that he is Jiang Cheng. He is Jiang Wanyin, heir to the Yunmeng Jiang clan and worthy of leading them.
It's literally no secret how much he despises that everyone sees him as someone 'not Jiang like'. Their motto doesn't match him. But WWX does. WWX gets his father's love freely. WWX is the talented cultivator that everyone praises and sees, and it's never him. Never JC.
He spent his entire life trying to catch up to WWX, then chasing him in hatred, only to realise that he never could. No matter what he did, he would never measure up to WWX. And he is grateful, he is thankful for what WWX did, but it came out in the usual way all his feelings do: anger and derision. That scene hurts, but it made me finally understand JC.
Honestly, my biggest takeaway from all this was that JC deserved better parents. I love him and I love WWX and I want their relationship to be better desperately but knowing that with all that has happened, I also know it's going to be really really hard. I still want to believe in my own hc that post-canon, they sit down and talk like mature adults and get all this out of the way.
Be the brothers they always should have been, even if they can't be the Twin Heroes of Yunmeng anymore.
(Sorry this got a little long hahaha~)
Edit: And I just want to add that JC never needed to compare himself or 'catch up' to WWX. That's where his parents failed him. Nobody telling him that he is enough and wonderful and loved as he is. I would love to jump in and just, give him a tight hug and say all these things to the younger JC. That I'm proud of him. That's he's enough.

Bringing a MDZS, TGCF and SV crossover again.
Lmao a fix where post-canon: Shang Qinghua finished writting Heaven's official blessing and Grandmaster of Demonic cultivation, because he wanted to do those stories after finishing PIDW -but died- and then began to retell them to his lovely husband. After hearing him read all of MDSZ Mobei Jun stares and him and is just...
"It's about those clans located to the far southeast right?" And Shang Qinghua is like "what? What do you mean?" And so they come to look at a map and see that. In fact. They. Exist.
Shang Qinghua is so confused because tf?!? they aren't supposed to exist at all!! Yet the story had already been placed!
However, as goes through his notes again, he finds a few differences between the novels and real life.
1rst is that the Nie and Jin clan exists, he didn't want those two clans to exist in the second draft so that they don't add fuel to the angst, cucumber bro had dammed him to hell for it! And he doesn't need another cucumber bro!!
2nd is, with the existence of the tiny Mo clan– after the two of them went to explore that southeast part a little bit.– it means that there is definitely going to be the resurrection of the Yiling Patriarch, once more he made angst but just on the first draft!! On the second it was going to be that Wei Wuxian had been kept alive for 13 years raising Lan Sizhui and falling in love with Lan Wangji!
3rd is the fact that the Jumeng clan– after asking nearby people who they are– JIANG FENGMIAN AND YU ZIYUAN EXIST AND ARE ALIVE!
Mobei Jun: "Those characters in the book?"
AHHHHHH AND THEY HAVE ALREADY GOTTEN JIANG YANLI AND JIANG CHENG WHAT THE HECK!!!!
DEATH FLAGS
TOO MANY DEATH FLAGS!!
CUCUMBER BRO WILL HAVE HIS HEAD!!
"Then there is only one posibility!! One!!" Shang Qinghua immediately runs around Yiling city and asks Mobei Jun who is hidding his identity with a shape-shifting talisman of sorts -have to thank those fans for suggesting the weirdest kinky ideas for that talisman to appear- to help him "find a small child very scared of dogs, poor and if you give him fruits! Any! he smiles! And if you see him to capture him right away!"
So Shang Qinghua and Mobei Jun try to find as fast as they can the little Wei wuxian and SQH does find him! Yay! Plot devoid of stupidity! But oh no.
[System Updating]
[Syatem Updating]
"Oh fuck" He doesn't even have time to explain, Shang Qinghua just grabs Wei Wuxian out of the dog fight and holds on to him before any System tries to tell him to stay away so angst continues. And he guesses right because the system starts to crash in his eyes, seeing it as a win he goes back to Mobei Jun who has a lot of kids in his arms. A lot.
"Orphans... I forgot to say orphans." Mobei Jun glares at him while the kids cry for their parents.
The two do a lot of apologies that day.
Meanwhile baby Wei Wuxian is just confused about the whole thing, "who are they?"
At first with how many kids were in Mobei Jun's hands he was sure they where kidnappers but then after all of that the tiny one says they found him? And then they have to quickly run before the cultivators catch them! Are they good guys? Are they bad guys!?
Shang Qinghua finally feels the poor boy tremble under his arm and so he settles the boy down once they are at an inn and very far away from the police sort of cultivators.
Shang Qinghua brings him to a bed and then proceeded to ask him a few things.
"You are Wei Ying right?"
Mobei Jun crashed at that point. Cuz, that's the name of the child, the demonic cultivator in the books. But the books already painted him as a man who had become an immortal, not the little child on the streets ooooohhhh what the fuck—
"You parents... they are Cangse Sanren and Wei Changze are they not?"
The boy beams "You know them? Then are you my mama's family? My baba's?"
"Ah... somewhat..."
"Really!?" Shang Qinghua had to lie saying that he is his uncle, and to go get a shower while they bring him some clothes later on. So now that boy leaves he is left with a Mobei Jun more than willing to listen and ask the thousands of questions he has.
Eventually Shang Qinghua tells him everything. [System Error. System Error] The systems simply says, so he guesses hopes that nothing bad will happen if he told the truth.
And nothing does! Ah! That's so good, goddammit he is crying so much to finally reveal everything. Every single thing! From his life as a writer, to his creation of PDIW how he had to listen to the fans so he could eat for once, how he then met Peerless cucumber which IS Shen Qinqiu though he wasn't meant to be and neither was he also meant to be here, and how both of them where destined to die yet they changed the storyline into something that looked like the first few drafts and then how he was thinking about writting more stories and he finally ends it once they think Wei Ying has been in the bathroom for too long and so Shang Qinghua goes to take care of him, grabbing some clothes they asked a maid to buy for them and had already been delivered.
So Mobei Jun has to process a lot. He is very quiet about it —possibly going through every stage of every emotion imaginable. Well Qinghua can't blame him! He just learned he is God!—
Once Wei Wuxuan has eaten and slept Mobei Jun just goes like "You are the worst god."
"I know."
The next day the cop cultivators are still searching while Shang Qinghua and Mobei Jun book it out with Wei Wuxian to the central plains and crash at Cang Qiong Mountain. No one bats an eye as to why a demon ice king is present, they ask Yue Qingyuan where Qing Jing peak lord is, then find him in in and middle of finishing a papapa, after they let him finish did they deliver the news to him. Sadly Binghe had to leave and not listen because the System works on him, PDIW' pov comes from him and therefore if the readers where to find out the existence of the transmigators... (are you serious system? They are still reading?) [System Error. The existence of transmigation and the System must not be shared with Protagonist Luo Binghe.]
(Fuck you.)
Shen Qingqiu: "Airplane. Private chat. Now."
"I'm going to die aren't I?"
Wei Wuxian flinched at the dramatic screams but Mobei Jun just huddles him close cuz no, he kinda deserved that. (Poor Binghe, his especial husband food is now being given to this Wei child.)
The two modern AU bros are still shouting outside, Shen Qingqiu trying to get all the information of ANY thing he has ever written, Even the textbooks from high-school! Yes! The cringe things he posted at 13 too! Everything! Everything!
But poor Airplane bro can only remember making Grandmaster of Demonic cultivation and Heaven's Official Blessing.
So while Wei wuxian is munching on more delicacy of the Demon Emperor food, and Binghe is eating with the boy, reluctantly. Shang Qinghua, Shen Qingqiu and Mobei Jun begin planning out some things.
1rst- To stop Shang Qinghua from writting ever again or just make him write some thing that could be useful, let's see how his God powers develop really.
2nd- Xianle Kingdom is still alive and surprisingly the place where Granmaster of Demonic cultivation takes place in, so that might explain the existence of ghosts and why no one cared about the kingdom or the Emperor in MDZS. Well anyways Shen Qingqiu will go to Xianle before Mei Nianqing and hopefully intercept the child from becoming a chosen one of Jun Wu and hopefully manage to prevent Xianle's downfall once and for all.
"Ah but Cucumber bro, the story takes place between ghosts and gods. We are neither of those."
[System Updated.]
[Mission: Lighten the story but the events must stay the same. Access to heaven has been granted if one can achieve level 150.]
"Oh look we have the levels above our heads, and the stats of everyone too!"
Shen Qingqiu Level 100
Mobei Jun level 113
Shang Qinghua Level 60
They go to the other room.
Luo Binghe Level 250.
"Jesus fucking Christ."
Alright new plan, Shang Qinghua will become a cultivator friend or teacher in Lotus Pier so as to keep a close eye on Wei wuxian's growth, rescue him before he looses his golden core but still have to learn demonic cultivation, rescue his family, if he can too, and saving the Wen remnants, which is going to be an enough for the clans to have a reason to kill him. Hahaha.....ha...
Shen qingqiu will have to be the Guoshi of Xianle, trying to also reprimand the future Green ghost's misbehavior and setting Xie Lian in a right path but one that is mundane enough. Maybe him just becoming a King will be fine.
Binghe will have to be convinced to become the heavenly emperor in case Xie Lians protagonist powers are too much and Mobei Jun gets to do all the spy work seeing if he can save some other characters from disaster like the ones from Yi city or preventing Banyue from falling, the Wen remnants from being abused and Wen Ning from being killed, guiding the poor bride ghost's resentment away or even saving He Xuan wayyy before the beefleaf arc starts. Shang Qinghua will be there too after taking care of Wei Wuxian first.
- - - - -
It just... it'll be fun seeing like:
- Wei Wuxian learning Demonic cultivation from actual demons. Angst by resusitating Hua Cheng so that he might protect Xie Lian especially during the 33 gods that tried to fight Xie Lian for the mountain.
-Posibility of the Yiling Wei clan established with the help of Shang Qinghua and Mobei Jun bringing in protection and poor characters who definely need to be here: usual Mo Xuanyu, Xue Yang, Wen Yuan, rest Wen remnants, A Qing for good measure. BUT ALSO feral Quan Yizhen, Shi Qingxuan with so much bad luck on his hands (despite Shi Wudu not wanting to) and maybe even Hua Cheng trying to learn how become really strong to protect his Majesty after he got banished by Mu Qing.
- If Mei nianqing gets found out then Shen Qingqiu will have to help him out and OH Heavenly Emperor Luo Binghe fight vs Jun Wu. Will that protagonist halo work?! Will it not!?! Hmmmmmm
-Maybe god Xie Lian VS god Luo Binghe. Who truly is the strongest protagonist!
-Qing Jing Peak's newly turned good but not really disciple: Prince Xiao Jing
-Mobei Jun just being used as a water source for the Burial Grounds and Yong An so they don't die.
-Omg Mobei Jun slapping some Qi or something to remedy Nie Mingjue so he doesn't die, still crashes into a comma or something. Woops.
-Yanli and Yingying friendship. Ultimate Shijies who got each other's back(literally).
-Wen Qing and Mu Qingfang talking about medicine and plants. Or better yet, some of the wen remnants that dont really master demonic cultivation becoming members of Ciang Qiong Sect.
-Nie Huasiang and Ling Wen where helped once by Shang Qinghua and suddenly started gathering suspicion as to who he was coming out of nowhere in their greatest need and deviating some plot points with his husband who is really a demon king. How does this man know other gods and has so many important people by his side? What can he see? What cant he?
-OMG Shi Qingxuan and Mo Xuanyu Dress Up BESTIES!!
-Zhuzhi-lang and Wen Ning just being Zhuzhi-lang and Wen Ning, maybe they strike up a friendship, maybe Wen Ning gets pretty scared at first.
-Demons and Ghosts hell yeah.
-Sha Hualing absolutely wreaks havoc with Wei Wuxian in Ghost City and Hua Cheng already grown up, depending if he died or not he is just : "Wei Shifu, why."
-Mei Nianqing and Shen Qingqiu playing cards. "You know solitare?" "No -_-." "Uno?" " No, do tell Shen Daozhang. 0-0" Song Lan and Xiao Xingcheng also agree to play. Mei Nianqing catching feelings of nostalgia because the three remind him of his old friends.
-Luo Binghe dying trying to teach Xie Lian and Wei Wuxian how to cook. He couldn't T-T.
-Mobei DAD! Of He Xuan because the misfortune killed him so he has to guide this ghost to not kill but he is filled by pure hatred dammit! And the same goes for the Xuan Ji who can't stop obsessing over Pei Ming so he has to tell her "he ain't worth it" every time. He finds Yin Yu and Banyue too and just has to take a minute into buttheading and slamming Pei Ming.
-heh Mobei Jun and Yushi Huang, gods who helped out humanity and are 100% done with Heaven shenanigans.
-Oh Shang Qinghua and Mobei Jun possibly giving the Jiang children all the love they deserve ♥❤<333
-Jun Wu being bad by uniting forces with ghost Tianlang-Jun but ghost Tianlang-Jun gets Jun Wu into ✨Danmei✨
"Luo Binghe that kid... doesnt he look like you?"
"Yeah he is my son."
"..."
"Hes gay."
"Oh... well mine isnt."
TLJ Pointing to Hualian "are you sure about that?"
-OH Maybe Jiang Yanli can learn martial arts under Qi Qingqi!
-Nie Mingjue wanting his little brother to succeed as head of the sect but Liu Qingge just says that he should follow his dreams and passions just like his sister has done. "And what is your sister?" "Worldwide renown writter no you cannot ask of w h a t."
-Xie Lian: Biological son of a King and queen, Emotional son of two Heavenly Gods equal in power and two weird Immortals as they fight for custody. Married to a ghost king who studied under the grandmaster of Demonic cultivation who in turn was taken care of and taught by the literal primordial creator with his demonic ice king.
Oh you know what will be funny? Is if they actually KNOW Shang qinghua is their creator but only after 800 years have passed or something and Shang Qinghua finally archives Godhood and the entirety of heaven just gasps and stays in silence as they see the Immortal Shang qinghua looks THE SAME even to the smallest details as the grand Jade Emperor that stands in the main hall of the heavenly palace. He is truly the first Jade Emperor. AND HE IS BACK OMG OMG OMG!!
Only the most powerful gods could have access to this site, and: Heavenly Supreme god Luo Binghe who didn't care about heaven, Literature God Shen Qingqiu always cooped up taking care of earth whose only reason of becoming a God was so he could endure papapa, God of death Wei Wuxian in Ghost city, God of Winter Mobei Jun having tea times and harvesting Yong An as well as taking care for the Mobei clan, God of Music Lan Wangji playing sad music whenever his husband wasn't home and papapaing when he was, Martial God Xie Lian... um...
WELL All the Gods he knew of where doing one thing or another and therefore NO ONE had told him about the history of heavenly emperors until he had been kidnapped by Jun Wu who then explained that OH GOD NO WHAT DO YOU MEAN GOD SHEN YUAN WAS ANOTHER CREATOR TOO! OF THE SYSTEM!??! THE FUCK—

mdzs au but they're all idols from different generations
wen ruohan, qingheng-jun, jin guangshan, jiang fengmian and sect leader nie were all part of a extremely successful boyband, that disbanded after their 15th year
what happened after they disbanded: nie-die died, leaving two kids, at first they thought it was suicide, but after deep investigation, they found out it was wen ruohan's fault, so he was send to jail, because of that, the public got to know that the group was actually very afraid of him and never got along very well, and his the reason why qingheng-jun went into hiatus way before their disband and was the first to give up idol life (he was also the first one to marry, to the hate of his fans); also, another factor for their disband was jin guangshan's....... whoreness
cangse sanren was an solo idol, very successful, with the guidance of legendary singer baoshan sanren
yu ziyuan was part of small, almost unknown, girl group, jfm's fans also hate her very much (they used to ship him with cssr before she married his bff from school and indie singer, wei changze, they ended up being the couple's fans)
(in this au no parent die, besides nie-die, sorry bud, it's for the plot)
they decide to try and create a sect leaders boyband 2.0, with their offspring - lan xichen (lwj was invented, but declined), jin zixuan, jiang cheng and nie mingjue, but it wasn't as successful, and didn't even reach 7 years before disband (and what a party for the tabloids! to know that some members kept fighting all the time)
wei wuxian decided not to be a singer, although his voice is quite good, he isn't too god at writing or composing either, so he's now an known artist with murals throughout the country, and is bff with nie huaisang, who's also an artist (and actor! very praises and sought after, he has some awards)
lan wangji is songwriter and compositor, he helped his brother when he debuted and kept supporting him when his group disbanded and lxc decided to change careers and be an actor now. lwj's songs are almost always a huge success, he even got some awards on his shelf
lan qiren never went into entertainment industry, deciding early on to be a teacher, ironically, he's the boy's teacher and has to talk to all these celebrities about their kid's grades and behavior, he hates it, especially when 1/3 of his class doesn't show up for weeks because of schedule. it's their final year! it should be a crime! ilegal! bad parents and worse managers! he has a deep respect for wangxian for their choices, surprisingly (they have something in common: a need for privacy and anonymity)
jiang cheng redebuted on another group, but it didn't last and wasn't successful, he tried solo career, like jzx, but he soon gave up idol life and went to create his own independent label (he only debuted because his parents wanted, and his mother insisted too much, it wasn't his choice)
nie mingjue also changed careers and became a very successful actor, like lxc, though he often complains about always being a cast as villain or mafia
wwx and lwj meet at school, when wwx was trying to get a bag of alcohol inside the school grounds, they fight a lot at the beginning but before new years break, they were already friends and by their last year - pining like idiots

Propaganda for the Jiang Family
CW: murder, choking, verbal abuse, emotional abuse, homophobia
"*pats family* this baby can fit so much resentment in it. Parents dislike each other and fight, yell at children and pit them against each other leading to but not only choking each other, one of them sacrificing basically his life for the other, blaming one for their parents deaths, one of them kinda accidentally causes the other siblings death which then causes a whole body of other issues when the other one comes back to life, it's just not great overall."
"Yu Ziyuan is certain her husband doesn't love her and prefers Wei Wuxian, his husband's alleged lovechild (not actually his) over their own children, especially son, and punishes every member of the family for this. Jiang Fengmian is certain Yu Ziyuan hates him and is apathetic about it, accepting her "punishment". Jiang Yanli is mostly ignored and set aside because she has a weak body because of an illness and does like, 80% of tge actual raising of her younger siblings. Wei Wuxian, because of Yu Ziyuan, is certain he isn't actually part of the family and he should put his siblings', especially Jiang Cheng's, needs above his own (and not like, personal needs but the perceived needs as the head of the clan). Jiang Cheng, because of her mother, is certain his father prefers Wei Wuxian and he isn't good enough to be the next clan leader.
There's corporeal punishment, verbal eviscerations, lack of communication, and love. The love usually manifests as not telling family members that they are loved but instead making major unacknowledged sacrifices without consulting the person it actually concerns, and then keeping it a secret and distancing that family member. They love each other so much and yet are so bad at not hurting each other.
And then everyone except Jiang Cheng keep dying."
"omg. the parents are a somewhat arranged marriage and the dad was in love with some other woman and adopted her kid after she died, and his wife knows this and is insanely jealous because she knows the dad 1. doesn't love her and 2. loves his adopted kid more than his actual biological son. rumors fly around about dad's supposed infidelity. mom is verbally and emotionally abusive to the kids and dad is fairly passive in its face. the adopted son is treated as a brother to the heir of the sect (they are also a political family) and also as a servant, creating a deeply dysfunctional dynamic in which the adopted kid struggles to navigate an impossible set of expected roles. he wants please the mom (who hates him and punishes him for the smallest mistake, including being better than her bio son at things), get parental love from the dad (who favors him and makes him feel guilty for being loved more than the bio son is) without upsetting his adopted brother (who is deeply insecure because he knows his dad doesn't like him and the favored adopted brother is a genius who is better at him than anything). every family meal is a battleground. nothing gets done and everyone conforms themselves into shapes the others will approve of, except the mom who lashes out in bitterness and rage at everything.
before going to defend their home from an attack that led directly to their deaths, the parents messed up their children one final time. the mom said that the attack was adopted boy's fault and that she hates him, prompting him to sacrifice his life for the biological son in several tragic and avoidable ways.the dad likewise told adopted boy to be the protector of his bio kids, pushing adopted boy back into a servant role when he was also a traumatized child reeling . there's also an older sister in there but she's ignored by half the fanbase and her parents, usually. as we can imagine she's heavily parentified because her parents are useless. as adults the brothers are almost completely estranged because their sister died and one of them tried to kill the other one for it and their relationship was maintained by her anger translation. in a series spanning 25+ years, almost all the many issues in the mc (adopted boy) and his brother can be directly traced back to his parents' behavior. also bio son is homophobic to adopted son but that is relatively low on the list of ways their relationship is bad. he intentionally triggers him with his worst fear once he comes back from the dead. most insane family I have ever seen in fiction"

You know what's beginning to really grind my gears? The fact that Bad Parent Jiang Fengmian is more prevalent than Bad Parent Yu Ziyuan in this fandom. These tags are about neck and neck on ao3, yes, but when you search for Good Parent Yu Ziyuan, there is much more of that tag than the same for Jiang Fengmian—you can assume if the former is in the tags without the latter, that Jiang Fengmian is most likely not going to be written in a good light.
What did Jiang Fengmian do that is considered so bad? What??? He is literally the best dad we see in mdzs until Lan Wangji becomes a dilf. He tries to teach Jiang Cheng right from wrong, attempts to calm down his abusive wife when she goes on tirades, etc. He dissolves his daughter's engagement to the heir of a powerful and rich sect because she wouldn't be happy (at that time) with a man who dislikes her and the arrangement. The worst thing about him—not including how he allows Wei Wuxian to be whipped and abused etc, which goes to show you he doesn't like him better than Jiang Cheng—is he still lets his wife get away with too much.
Every time we see him around his own children, especially his own son, Yu Ziyuan storms in to ruin it. To put in Jiang Cheng's head that his father prefers Wei Wuxian over him. To ruin any type of conversation and bonding.
I don't think he's perfect, not at all, but the man was in an abusive relationship with his wife that ultimately effected his relationship with his children. And then gets painted by the fandom as a horrible father while glorifying his abuser... so tired of seeing it.

how to survive as the main antagonist (tutorial by Wei Wuxian)
by cornfrog Wei Wuxian is a bit obsessive and avid reader. He loves novels about cultiivators, sweet green tea, a plush Lan Wanji sleeping in bed with him, and quiet movie nights on Fridays. Lan Wangji is the main character of 'The Fall of the Dark Master' novel. He is honorable, fair, proud, kind-hearted, amazing, cute, beautiful... Ooops, sorry, Wei Wuxian wrote this. But yeah, Lan Wangji is that one character every cliche book or movie has. The one fans got a lot of merch with. But now Wei Wuxian is dead. Or is he? Because the System doesn't think so. What if Jiang Cheng develops (gets forced into) an eating disorder?
When Wei Wuxian first comes home he is tiny and small and so incredibly thin because the months on the street fucked him up for good. And as it turns out they also fucked up his metabolism because he stays incredibly thin even as he shoots up and grows taller than Jiang Cheng.
And Jiang Cheng is not like Wei Wuxian. He eats, and it shows, especially when he doesn't train enough.
His father of course berates him for stealing Wei Wuxian's food, because how else is Wei Wuxian still this thin while Jiang Cheng is plumb and his mother holds him to some arbitrary beauty standards (but mostly she just doesn't want Jiang Cheng to be less good looking than Wei Wuxian. And that fat in his cheeks? That's less good looking than Wei Wuxian. So it can't be happening.)
So Jiang Cheng's eating gets regulated.
There's a strict plan. He's only allowed to have certain foods and even then just barely enough for him to grow still and for no doctor to grow suspicious.
That changes when they go off to school. Suddenly Jiang Cheng's grades are something to be used against him. He scored lower than Wei Wuxian? That will be one missed dinner for him. Wei Wuxian was praised in class? That means the amount of rice gets halved. Jiang Cheng tries his hardest to do well in school (and he's not doing bad by any means, it's just--he's not good enough) but it's so hard when his stomach always rumbles and he feels faint most of the day. And this continues until they are well into university.
Jiang Cheng's parents continue to phrase it as a disciplinary method and Jiang Cheng has suffered this for long enough that he doesn't even register that something is wrong with this.
But then he gets to know Nie Huaisang and Nie Mingjue and somehow-despite still having his own family-gets adopted by them. When Jiang Cheng's parents cut his rent for one reason or another (Jiang Fengmian: his tone was too mean when he spoke to Wei Wuxian; Yu Ziyuan: his grades are not good enough) the Nies take him in.
And Jiang Cheng is confused.
Sure, it makes sense that Nie Mingjue is eating as much as he does, he's so good at everything he does, so he has earned it and he works out quite a lot as well, so it wouldn't even matter. But Jiang Cheng notices that Nie Huaisang snacks whenever he feels like it as well even though his grades are not the best and Nie Mingjue constantly scolds him to do better. And still Nie Huaisang is snacking away at every moment of the day.
Jiang Cheng one day asks him how he smuggles his snacks in, thinking maybe he can do the same, if only to make his stomach grumble less and Nie Huaisang tells him (not understanding what this means to Jiang Cheng).
So Jiang Cheng starts to snack. He's stressed though, so it doesn't immediately show but just in case he starts wearing baggier clothes so the Nie brother's don't realize it.
But then one day Jiang Cheng brings home a failed exam and he knows what that means. No dinner for him. He stays in his room, unwilling to sit with Nie Huaisang and Nie Mingjue while they eat and he's not allowed to but it doesn't even take them a minute to come after him. Nie Mingjue asks him why he's not joining them for dinner and Nie Huaisang starts to pester him as well when he won't immediately answer and eventually it just bursts out.
"I haven't earned dinner today. I wasn't good enough to eat."
It floors the Nie brother's into absolute silence because that is so fucked up that they don't even know where to start with it. But starting they do, and in the end Jiang Cheng sits down with them for dinner, even if he fears they are going to take it from him immediately.
Jiang Cheng thought that Nie Mingjue maybe cared a little bit too much even before this incident, but it's nothing compared to what happens after the incident.
Jiang Cheng is being drowned in snacks. Nie Mingjue makes sure he always has something to eat at hand at every moment of the day. They double his portions during meals. They always make dessert. Even Nie Mingjue is starting to gain weight with how much they all suddenly eat and Jiang Cheng feels so incredibly bad about it but it's also kind of nice not having to go to bed with a gnawing pit in your stomach. Nie Huaisang stays as slim as ever, but he pokes a lot of fun at Nie Mingjue for getting a little tummy, while Nie Mingjue wears it with pride. His constant insisting that a bit of fat is nothing to be ashamed of slowly starts to get through to Jiang Cheng as well.
He eats a little bit more unprompted. Not an obscene amount but enough to still his hunger. He starts snacking when his stomach grumbles and surprisingly enough (not really, because duh) his grades pick up and he's less irritable as well. Jiang Cheng steadily gains weight but Nie Mingjue and Nie Huaisang never make fun of him for it and they don't berate him either.
Jiang Cheng's family still does though whenever they catch him eating but Nie Huaisang and Nie Mingjue simply smile at him and then make his favourite for dinner so it doesn't matter quite as much anymore. The Nie brothers just want Jiang Cheng happy and healthy and after a few months he at least looks the part. There are still some invisible wounds to heal but Nie Mingjue and Nie Huaisang are working on that as well.

💙 A Star Fell
by CordialCoroner (CordialCrow)
M, Series, WIP, 84k, Wangxian
Summary: After the altercation with Jin Zixuan, Wei Wuxian is sent back to Lotus Pier. No one has seen him since. Kay's comments: I just love stories that put Wei Wuxian through a meat grinder a little bit. He's my absolute favourite, I love it when he gets through it <3 Here we have him getting sent home early after he punched Jin Zixuan, only this time, Madam Yu was here to vent her anger on him and let's just say, she goes overboard and Wei Wuxian ends up disabled as a consequence. He has to effectively give up being a night-hunting cultivator and instead trains to become a healer. This is also how he meets Wen Qing and Wen Ning earlier and an amazing canon divergence follows with him working closely together with the other inhabitants of Lotus Pier to get people evacuated when the Wens attack. A great story, with wonderful Yiling silibings, Lan Wangji and Jin Zixuan and Mianmian friendship and just some really cool changes. Excerpt: Wei Wuxian was intelligent, this Suyin knew, but she was unprepared for the absolute hunger the boy had for knowledge. He consumed books rapidly, not only reading their contents but wanting to discuss them, to dissect the argument, and dig deeper with anyone willing to listen. He requested and was eventually allowed paper and ink, and spent hours scribbling down various ideas and occasional pieces of art, occasionally gifted to some of the prettier healers. He even offered an admittedly well-crafted drawing of Suyin’s favorite flowers, azaleas, though how he knew them to be her favorites, she was unsure. “You have the same type of flower embroidered on your sleeves, so I took a guess based on the ones I knew with petals like that.” Wei Wuxian admitted with a grin, pleased to have guessed correctly. Yes, he was observant and clever, running through books and papers quickly, and absolutely loathing to be left unoccupied for long. “Healer Jiang, Healer Jiang, aren't there any other books for me to read?” He asked with a pout unsuited for his age. Suyin tutted at him, “What of the books Tao gave you? Don’t tell me you’ve gotten through them already.”
pov alternating, canon divergence, no golden core transfer, major character injury, disability, injury recovery, bad parents jiang fengmian & yu ziyuan, not jiang cheng friendly, somebody lives/not everybody dies, sunshot campaign, slow burn, healer wei wuxian, mutual pining, medical professionals, angst with a happy ending, jin zixuan & lan wangji friendship, families of choice, hurt/comfort, wip

Some… not-so lovely tidbits in Chapter 56 of Mo Dao Zu Shi (ExR translation) that caught my eye:
This chapter is really so interesting in a lot of ways. Most of them not fun though.
Wei WuXian, “I didn’t. I just feel that, compared to him, I really didn’t do much.”
Jiang FengMian nodded, “Well done.”
He was able to kill a four-hundred-year-old beast at the mere age of seventeen. It was much more than a ‘well done’.
Jiang Cheng, “Congratulations.”
The tone of his congratulations sounded quite strange. Seeing how he folded his hands and raised his brows, Wei WuXian knew that those sour feelings were at him again. Jiang Cheng, right now, must be making a fuss in silence, defiantly asking himself why he wasn’t the one who had stayed in the cave to kill the beast. If it had been him, he could definitely also do this and do that.
I think this interaction perfectly sums Wei Wuxian’s relationship with the Jiang Fengmian and Jiang Cheng.
Wei Wuxian clearly is aware Jiang Cheng is jealous of him—even saying that ‘he knew those sour feeling were directed at at him again’ implying that it’s not the first time Jiang Cheng has gotten jealous over him. So he’s quick to downplay his accomplishment here with Jiang Fengmian giving the bare minimum of praise for what is frankly an award worthy achievement.
They even mention that the Wen’s are throwing a party for Wen Chao “killing” the beast but Wei Wuxian just gets a ‘well done’? The difference in treatment for the same deed is apparent.
And yet Jiang Cheng still gets jealous.
And after seeing Jiang Cheng’s bad mood Wei Wuxian is quick to try and correct it:
Wei WuXian laughed, “What a pity that you weren’t there as well. Or else, you’d be able to share some of that credit as well. You’d also be able to chat with me and chase the boredom away. Good Heavens, sitting face-to-face with Lan Zhan these days almost bored me to death.”
Jiang Cheng, “It served you right to be bored to death. You shouldn’t have played the hero and you shouldn’t have cared for such a hell of a thing. If in the beginning you didn’t…”
Suddenly, Jiang FengMian spoke, “Jiang Cheng.”
Jiang Cheng paused, knowing that he had said too much. He was quiet at once.
Interestingly this seems to imply Jiang Cheng doesn’t think what he said is wrong or feel guilty for it—just that he said enough for his father scold him.
Jiang FengMian didn’t look as if he was blaming him of anything, but his expression had turned from calm to more solemn, “Do you know in which ways what you just said is not appropriate?”
Jiang Cheng’s head hung low, “Yes.”
Wei WuXian, “He’s just angry and speaking without care.”
And Wei Wuxian being relegated to peace keeper and making excuses for Jiang Cheng’s behavior. Which he shouldn’t even have to do because this a fairly normal parent-child exchange. Jiang Fengmian isn’t even shown to be mad at Jiang Cheng here. It’s just that Jiang Cheng can’t handle criticism.
Seeing how Jiang Cheng’s mouth and heart were still at odds, how he still felt defiant, Jiang FengMian shook his head, “A-Cheng, there are some things that can’t be said even if you’re angry. If you said them, it means that you still don’t understand the motto of the Jiang Sect, that you still don’t…”
Once again this implies that despite agreeing with his father out loud Jiang Cheng apparently feels that he’s said nothing wrong at all. Or at least that he was right to say it. So Jiang Fengmian tries to explain why what he said is wrong but…
The harsh voice of a woman came from outside the door, “Yes, he doesn’t understand, but what does it matter, as long as Wei Ying understands?!”
Ah, and Yu Ziyuan, interrupting her husband trying to teach their son an important life lesson to complain about unfair favoritism that is completely absent from this scene.
In front of Jiang FengMian, Wei WuXian had to give the madam some face. He didn’t protest at all, though he thought to himself, He couldn’t have dared to do anything to them? That’s not for certain.
Bless Wei Wuxian, calling out bullshit like always. Even if it’s just in his head.
Wei WuXian could only roll out of bed and chase over, dragging with him his stiff, sore body, “Jiang Cheng! Jiang Cheng!”
Jiang Cheng walked forward without a care for anything else.
Wei Wuxian literally almost died and was unconscious all of five minutes ago and yet he’s stuck doing damage control with the Jiangs. The lack of consideration being given to him, with Yu Ziyuan even barging into his room to start a fight with her husband, is jarring honestly. Literally the only peace and comfort he got in this household after his near death experience was when Jiang Yanli brought him soup.
Jiang Cheng ducked from his strike and shouted, “You’re hurting so much now, but why did you play the hero back then?! Serves you right! Teaches you your lesson!”
Notice how Jiang Cheng immediately starts saying the same things that his father just scolded him for saying now that his father has left the room? Jiang Cheng clearly hasn’t learned a goddamn thing or tried to take his lesson to heart.
Jiang Cheng frowned, “You’re at it again. You don’t really like her, do you? The girl does look fine, but it’s obvious that she doesn’t have much background. Maybe she isn’t even a disciple. She seems like the daughter of a servant.”
You know what this is called? Being classist.

Fandom Gripe #11: I absolutely haaaaate the “bad jiang parents” tag and all its variations, because they always hint at the idea that Wei Wuxian was formerly adopted into the Jiang family and they conflate both the actions of the two parents and the treatments of the different children when they are not on the same level at all.
Jiang Fengmian is not “just as bad” as Yu Ziyuan because he gently scolds his son to teach him a life lesson while she calls the same son worthless because he isn’t stronger than someone “beneath” him. Also, this evaluates Jiang Fengmian’s parenting solely on how madam yu and Jiang Cheng view him, not on how he actually parents, because then you’d have to acknowledge that Jiang Yanli exists and he is always shown to be kind and thoughtful towards her as well, while Madam Yu is quick to disparage her daughter’s actions and interests. Jiang Fengmian is a mediocre parent at worst, Madam Yu is a straight up spouse and child abuser, and a man doesn’t need to also be “abusive” to justify the presence of an abusive woman.
On the other hand, Jiang Yanli and Jiang Cheng do not have it “just as bad” as Wei Wuxian, because while Madam Yu berates her children for acting “beneath” their stations, she has never: 1) degraded or thrown into question their parentage, 2) said they should be on the streets, 3) said she wanted them dead, 4) punished them for existing in her vicinity, 5) forbade them from learning about their family, 6) blamed them for the family’s ruin, 7) whipped them for fun… Now you might say that half of these wouldn’t have ever happened with the Jiang siblings because this would reflect poorly on Madam Yu and throw into question her children’s places as heirs, and you would be exactly right! She doesn’t treat her children like this, even though she treats them poorly, because they are her children and Wei Wuxian is not. He gets treated like dirt under her shoes with no real pushback from Jiang Fengmian, and what she does to her own children is simply nowhere near on that level.
(And no, they are not “bad parents” to Wei Wuxian because, as stated in the beginning, they are not his parents. They are his guardians and he makes it very clear he has his own parents he’d like to keep and honor, thank you very much.)

Hello Orion! I've seen your opinions about JC, YZY and JYL (I agree with all of them) so I was wondering, what about Jiang Fengmian? Just curious about what you think of him and how much JC stans seem to twist him in order to make him and WWX look bad. But then again I'm not quite sure what my opinions on JFM are either so I was just curious about it!
Love ur metas and writing btw! Your posts always cheer me up and I've been through some hard ass anxiety attacks of which your blog helped me through, so thanks a lot! ❤️💕
Tumblr media
Hello there, Agnes! And thank you very much for the compliment, I'm glad if what I scatter about on this messy website is able to help others as well, even as I wrestle with my old anxieties before I toss it into the closet and tell myself to be open without worries about my opinions on a book we all have love for (or hate, I get hate reading too, if that's your thing... just please reread before trying to bash with your whole chest)
On to Jiang Fengmian, I think he was a kind man, that was not meant to be a leader, that was dealt a sad hand in life. I think his own passivity and wanting to be someone that just lived, ultimately is what sort of hurt him. His love and sentimentality, in a way feels similar to the quiet love of Lan Wangji, not understood well, especially since he did not get to have a Wei Wuxian at his side and had others he did significantly care for (Jiang Cheng) believe he was indifferent. There is a big reason why his message of being careful of how you express or what you say is such a major theme within the story, since it is his words, that are at the core of what Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji have to overcome to be happy with each other and see that their love and care is reciprocated.
Jiang Fengmian was wise in what he had to say, but his lack of faith in his own place or being able to have convictions in it, is what held him back, and made Yu Ziyuan able to be cruel to him, and their children. He was not able to rise above hardships because of this weakness. And him choosing to kowtow to that all, made him another accessory of saying and doing things that were damaging, regardless of intent. He had failed to follow his own words, and I believe he knew this as he was a worn down man by the time we get one real interaction with him. And he is just a sad man with only little happiness in his life.
He was a parent who wasn't able to speak to his child the way he or Jiang Cheng needed, and he wasn't a parent to Wei Wuxian, out of respect for his old friends, and because of the hate Madam Yu would continue to have in him. He made choices that weren't good for him, or anyone, when he ultimately agreed to a betrothal that ruined generations. I think he did see that, but didn't know how to fix it in anyway, and, went through life without really living it with little passion.

I feel the thing with YZN as an abuser in AU's is due to transplanting their (her and her husband's) dynamic into a modern setting with no major changes. Because I'll be honest, yeah Yu Ziyuan is at best a shitty adult figure (not to say Fengmian didn't fuck up but like), but when you transplant her actions into a modern context with no changes, while Fengmian is still flawed she comes off as vile (because of differences with corporal punishment probably).
Yeah, this is exactly it, and it really bugs me that a fair number of modern AUs seem to center around the idea that SHE, of all the bad parents, specifically needs to be held accountable when a) it's a combination of bad parenting and a form of corporal punishment that is completely in line with the norms of the culture* and b) a form of bad parenting that is very specifically formed in symbiosis with Jiang Fengmian's also very bad parenting! Each of them acts the way they do because of how the other one behaves, and frankly either of them probably could have been a half-decent parent without the other one around.
*Obviously the reason people's enduring image of Yu Ziyuan is as physically abusive in a way that's out of line with norms is because of the scene with Wang Lingjiao and Jiang Cheng's reaction to her beating Wei Wuxian. But if people are out there reading that scene as just an example of their typical dynamic/a chance to physically abuse Wei Wuxian in a way she would have done anyway, then like.... you need to pay closer attention to scenes, idk.
I'm not criticizing anyone who chooses to transplant her into modern AUs in this way, it's just not to my taste.
