Was the fire nation essentially trying to “speed run” to the fire nation avatar during the 100 year war?
Stick with me here, please. I have not heard this theory before. So my thoughts are as follows. If you look at the timeline of avatar you notice that the fire nation started its raids on the southern water tribe roughly 10-20 years after the air nomad genocide. We can use grangran and Hama as indicators for this as they were present during that time. The raids had the fire nation kidnap, not kill, only waterbenders. Then moved them into cells. Then suddenly they stopped when katara was roughly 5 or so. Now some say it’s because Hama escaped. That could be a factor but Hama escaped when she was roughly 30. Years prior to the raids end. My theory is that they were going after the next avatar in the cycle, a southern water tribe member.
After the fire nation thought they got the water avatar they would have moved to the next element in the cycle, Earth. They started rounding up earthbenders and putting them in metal prisons. Something at the time they couldn’t bend. They were, like with the waterbenders, keeping them alive. Now to me the one prison we saw looked old. So they were probably doing this roughly halfway through the war. And we can guess that the one we saw wasn’t the only prison there was.
Now onto the final bit. Once they got to the fire nation avatar, then what? Who’s going to teach them the other 3 elements? Remember how they kept all these people alive? The fire nation also had sky bison hidden away, whether that was known to the fire lord or not we don’t know… Regardless, once they got back to fire in the cycle they had an ample supply of water, earth, and airbenders.

This is a commission I did a few weeks ago for the one, the only, Michaela Murphy, voice actress for Toph Beifong!
Long story short, I was tabling at a Sci-Fi Valley Con in PA, she was a celebrity guest, multiple people got turtleducks they bought from me signed by her to the point that she came LOOKING FOR ME, found me, and commissioned these hybrid animals. You can see her liking and commenting on my Instagram post of it (:
Truly honored to interact with such an awesome human and make something for her!
Do not trace, steal, or repost! 🙏

On the Unredeemed
Unredeemed villains are important in fiction. I feel like that needs to be said. There is a trend in recent years (probably since Wicked became a hit) of people wanting to see monsters redeemed. I'm not against that (per-se... glowers in Maleficent), but also, I feel like we do lose something when we lean into the idea that the monster gets to make good.
Fiction can be really useful for teaching us about life. I remember seeing a quote some time ago on Pinterest or something that said something along the lines of "fairytales are important not because they tell us dragons are real, but because they tell us that dragons can be slayed". That has been on my mind a lot recently when I see discussions about characters like Azula and (more recently) Ozai. They are fictional characters with super magic fire powers, but they represent something real- they represent the cycle of abuse in families, and while I understand the impulse to absolve someone as young as Azula, I think it's also important to tell the story where she isn't redeemed.
One reason that most Azula redemption stories bother me is because of the responsibility they tend to place on Zuko as her older brother, despite the fact that she victimized him probably more than anyone in her life (that we get to see. I don't think her soldiers believed her death threat for no reason). There are plenty of stories about the victims of abuse needing to be the bigger person to keep their families together and being villainized when they don't (I think by now we all understand that Terri was not the villain of Soul Food). We need stories about knowing when it's okay to walk away, and that illustrate the idea that "the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb".
In a time when more people are talking openly about going low contact or completely cutting off family members- close family members- I personally think that seeing stories about coming out of the other side of it, of building a new family, healing from the past, and dealing with the residual guilt that comes with "turning your back on family" even when it's the right call, is helpful in the same way that those fairytales about slayable dragons are.
I'm not saying any of this to discourage Azula redemption stories. In fact I would love to see more. Stories that have Azula confronting what she did to the people she should have loved most, and have her considering what to do with the knowledge going forward, instead of just using her past abuse and mental health to gloss over the real harm she did. I want to see her grappling to accept the fact that no one- not her brother, not Iroh, not her friends- owes her forgiveness, and then dealing with all the complex emotions that come with just one of them actually forgiving her. But also, I want to see stories where Zuko gets to let go of his father and sister and go on to be supported in that decision. Because to him, they were dragons, and they were slain.

there are a lot more serious issues with the Netflix live action alta but the one that's making me the most angry is the badger moles sensing emotions to see instead of vibrations. They're seeing love???? Whose fucking idea was that?

Here is a collection of Kenneth Grahame inspired designs from the 1908 classic, The Wind in the Willows. One of my favorite subjects to paint is old-school storybook style scenes that you might find in old books.
Here is a collection of stuff you can find via my store!
Please consider supporting my work :)

For the ask game:
Unpopular opinion about zuko?
I might have said this before, but I don't think he's naturally as awkward as he appears. In fact, he doesn't have a ton of truly awkward moments, just moments where he loses in silly ways and angry outbursts because that's what he thinks he's supposed to do. The most awkward I can think of is his date with Jin. It's not that Zuko is awkward, it's that he's very guarded, and that's totally understandable, considering his father and his sister. With that in mind, I think in his natural state he would still be more introverted, but he isn't lacking social graces in general. When he's comfortable, he can be direct, commanding, and even charming. The only time I think he would still come off as painfully awkward is when he likes someone who he isn't sure likes him back. As a boyfriend/husband, I think he'd be shockingly smooth.
send me more asks!
