Up next, number 3 on my Queer Icons Pride Project list is Dominique Jackson. Dominique is a force to be reckoned with, she is incredibly talented, full of passion and fire. This image I referenced is a great example of that power, Dominique played the fierce Mother Elektra Abundance on FX's Pose. This show is a very important milestone in LGBTQ+ history, Dominique along with over 40 other transgender actor(s) told the story of New York's Ball Subculture during the late 1980s. Dominique came to the states from Tobago, a island in the Caribbean, at 15 and lived with her mother. She became not only a actress, but a model, an author, and a advocate for social change. Dominique inspires me by her fierceness and authenticity. She has such a confidence that one can't help but gravitate towards, want to embrace, and with some luck have a portion rub off onto themselves. Number 8 on my Queer Icons Pride Project is Sarah Paulson. Most likely recognized from her roles on American Horror Story, Sarah Paulson has been acting since the early 90s. Her capacity to convey and project vulnerability, strength, and terror are just a few of her abilities. Describing herself as gender fluid, and not wanting to feel straightjacketed Sarah has dated both men and women. I first stumbled upon Sarah during American Horror Story, but it was her role on Ratched, a prequel to the film One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, where she played nurse Mildred Ratched. She is believable as a skilled and mentally damaged character, manipulating anyone in her way to get what she wants. Number 7 on my Queer Icons Pride Project is Keith Haring. @keithharingfoundation Keith Haring was an openly gay pop art/graffiti artist in the 1980s. His playful animated style became a instant classic, and quickly recognizable all around New York City subways. His work blended sexuality and advocacy, promoting safe sex and AIDS awareness. After his popularity grew he began working on larger commissions, creating more than 50 individual pieces between 1982 and 1989. Many of these peices were voluntarily created for schools, hospitals, and day care centers. Later in his work became more political, focusing on anti-drug, homosexuality, AIDS, and safe sex. One of his most well known pieces brings attention to AIDS, telling the viewer to act up, and that "Silence = Death". Keith and his work influences me simply because he made the decision to use his artistic voice to bring attention to many serious issues. Number 6 on my Queer Icons Pride Project is Laverne Cox. @lavernecox Transgender actress, advocate and activist Laverne Cox is breaking down many barriers Trans people/actor(s) have and continue to face. Though best known for her role as Sophia Burset on Orange is The New Black, Laverne has been on television since the early 2000s. She continues to display her acting skills, but what impresses me is her ability to reach and connect with people. Laverne's skill in educating and providing insight into the Transgender community is one of the main reasons she is on my list. Number 5 on my Queer Icons Pride Project List is none other than the Rocket Man himself Sir Elton John. Elton John has influenced many people over his incredible career, "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" is my personal favorite, and what he's done for the music industry and artists around will be remembered for decades to come. Elton came to fame in late 1969 early 1970 with his first hit "Your Song". This was just the beginning, all through the 70s and into the 80s Elton solidified his place in music history and his greatness continued to the 90s and on. I couldn't imagine the soundtrack to The Lion King being as amazing without Elton. Apart from music Elton is an activist, bringing awareness to HIV/AIDS since the 1980s, and after the loss of Freddie Mercury he established the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Sir Elton John influences me because he isn't afraid to express his frustration or his tenderness in his music. Here we go number 4 on my Queer Icons Pride Project list, Touko Valio Laaksonen better known by his pseudonym Tom of Finland. Now first and foremost Tom of Finland's work is certally not for everyone, it's bold and in your face, depicting idealized versions of masculine men, mostly nude, and many in sexual positions. Tom was a Finnish artist, who's work consisted of over 3500 individual illustrations. Tom kept his homosexuality hidden when he was younger, joined the army during WW2 and held the rank of second lieutenant. His work was influenced by not only soldiers, but as time progressed bikers, construction workers, lumberjacks, and sailors became a staple. He took these stereotypical hypermasculine groups and gave them a queer twist. Now at the time this was unheard of especially as most heterosexual people believed gay men to be effeminate. Using the work sissy to describe a homosexual male was commonplace, but then came Tom and his men, recreating that image of what a gay man could also be. What's fascinating is many men today have images of the idealized muscular figure, of what they should look like and a good chunk of this comes from Tom's men. Tom of Finland has influenced my work since the beginning of my college education. Not only was he an artist who worked with the male form, but also the way he rendered figures seemed so fluid. He drew skin and muscles with curves, juxtaposing the idea of a hard body with the flow of a curved line. Frida Kahlo Frida was a Mexican painter who is known for her self portraits and depictions of her chronic pain due to a bus accident. She is arguably one of the most influential painters today. Frida was openly bisexual, despite being married to fellow painter Diego Rivera, she had many extramarital affairs, sleeping with both men and women. She was many things apart from a artist, she was a activist, a free thinker, and a political activist. What makes Frida inspirational to me is despite her agonizing pain and tumultuous relationship she still persevered, she didn't let outside forces prevent her from doing what she wanted. So here is the first of my 30 day queer icon pride project. Let me introduce Marsha P. Johnson. The P stands for "Pay it no mind." Which is what she would say when asked about her gender. She was described as to looking both masculine and feminine. Marsha was a activist, performer, self-identified drag queen, and a prominent figure in the Stonewall uprising of 1969. Though there is much debate as to who dealt the first blow, Marsha did climb a light pole and drop a bag with a brick on a cop car, shattering the windsheild. What makes Marsha influential to me is not only her strength, but her determination to be 100 percent authentic.
