Previously on BnHA: Kacchan was born and then he grew up and murdered the Demon Lord.

Today on BnHA: Kacchan fights a baby. Tomura and Deku finally remember that they were supposed to have been fighting too this entire time, and get on with that once again. Tomura is all, “[literally just reaches out and grabs Deku’s face because Deku’s main character powers suddenly abandoned him in a fit of confusion].” Deku is all, “[chops off Tomura’s fingers which is somehow not even in the top twenty of violent things that have happened in this series in just the last five chapters].” Tomura is all “joke’s on you I still got your quirk :D” and fuck me he actually stole Danger Sense, what the fuck.

logically I knew AFO still had to be alive somehow because he’s too big of a villain to go out that easily without a proper sendoff. but deep in my heart, I’m still secretly disappointed

I actually had a theory about this! well more of a wishlist item, really. I can’t remember if I’ve actually posted about it yet or not. but it’s like. you know how Deku and Kacchan are always being really dramatic about holding hands? wanting to hold hands; not wanting to hold hands; being afraid to hold hands; holding hands via proxy, etc. etc.?

and you know how both Endeavor and All Might have each done their own version of the victory pose that Kacchan is referring to here? with each one using a different hand?

so you see, I was thinking that it might be nice. might be a little poetic and all that. if at the end of the fight, Deku and Kacchan did, in fact, hold hands. and then did the victory pose together. and it became like their iconic hero moment. them standing there together. having accomplished their goal and defeated TomurAFO through teamwork. realizing their shared childhood dream. and sharing that moment of triumph with each other and with the world, ushering in a new era of heroes

anyway yeah. I was thinking that might be a pretty good ending. but it looks like Kacchan maybe really is about to pass out here now, lol, so maybe not? anyways time to finally scroll down

gotta admit, I did not see this coming in the slightest. OFA has been this immutable “I do what I want!” quirk for so long that I never thought Tomura or AFO would actually succeed in stealing it, even partially. that shook me to my core

BUT, it’s also really exciting to me because it’s going to make this battle much more interesting if Deku can’t use his get out of jail free card. shit just got way more real and I’m here for it

lastly, so! let me tell you guys my prediction. I still can’t see Tomura being the final villain lol. I just can’t. it feels too anticlimactic. if I’m wrong, I’m wrong, and I’ve certainly botched MANY predictions in the past, but I have not yet learned my lesson from any of it and I will not apologize lol

so here’s what I think. Deku and Tomura battle it out for the next chapter or two, and Tomura snatches up more of Deku’s quirks one by one. we see all of the Vestiges disappearing and the mood gets more and more desperate. eventually we’re down to just Kudou and Yoichi. Deku is panicking, but for some reason Kudou seems even MORE panicked

Kudou/Gearshift eventually gets stolen too, and it looks like this might finally be it for Deku (I have no idea how he’d stop Tomura from Decaying the ground once Blackwhip gets stolen, btw, but maybe Katsuki or someone else interferes in desperation towards the end). but just when it looks like Tomura is finally going to take the last piece of OFA, Deku’s vibes suddenly do a 180, stopping Tomura in his tracks

cut to the OFA Moon Gorgeous Meditation Realm, where Deku and Yoichi are staring at the door -- yes, that door -- in shock. because it’s finally been opened (now that the other Vestiges are no longer there to keep it at bay). and just like that, enter AFO, for the THIRD FUCKING TIME :D :D

Honestly, sometimes the story beats you with the fact things are wrong. I've shown that in stuff regarding Hawks's murder of Jin and that was STILL more subtle than whatever the fuck this is. None of this is good or helped and fuck if it's not heartbreaking to see what Spinner turned himself into.

Yeah, what HE turned himself into. Because ultimately he did let AFO do this to him. You think Spinner couldn't have walked away? I think he could have. You think Spinner couldn't have asked Dabi and Toga what to do? I think he could have, because those two are just not even engaging with what's happening to Tomura and maybe seeing them like that could have really spelt it out for Spinner that somewhere all of this had gone deeply wrong.

There's no positivity here. This is a tragedy. It's meant to be read like one. Spinner adores his friend for the traits and wishes of his that are a direct result of his trauma and grooming. Spinner finds inspiration in actions that only served to rob Tomura of free will. Spinner contributed to that. Spinner let someone turn him into the thing he kept begging people to understand he wasn't - a monster because it stopped mattering as much to him as Tomura. This isn't good.

Seriously. This is why I was holding my tongue for months about all of this and not engaging with people obsessed with Spinner's relationship with Tomura. was going to joke "wow only top five???" and then realised oh. how am i going to manage a top five. when there's so much and it's all so good.

anyways. all of these are based on personal appeal and interpretation. but also my personal appeal and interpretation rules above all ✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻

5. Chapter 373: FRIENDS :)

Yeah duh, did you see how crazy we went when this entire chapter dropped? The only reason it isn't higher is because I'm holding on for my most grand theory to pan out (or for like. anything lmao).

Especially special chapter to me because the two things in the ShigAFO fight that have triggered Tenko/Tomura were a) questioning whether he has friends and b) his anger and hurt seeing the heroes give everything they can to save Bakugou when no one has ever extended that kind of effort to him. And then Horikoshi followed that up with a chapter specifically titled "Friends" wherein someone who has consistently demonstrated that he cares about Shigaraki gives everything he has, how little it may be, in a desperate plea to save him. Might mean nothing :)

4. The Last Time Shigaraki Was Allowed To Talk to Anyone From the League LMAO

Literally the last time Shigaraki had any direct interaction with anyone in the League (besides being on panel with them for 240 and ShigAFO trying to warn Dabi not to charge into the final battle like an asshole) was with Spinner and Twice in Chapter 231. Which is crazy and drives me to a frothing fury on a regular basis. But it's also a moment I care about a lot because a) Twice :)

And b) there's this little discussion between Shigaraki and Spinner that's not really shippy, but still demonstrates this brief moment of - fairness, partnership? Where Shigaraki asks for Spinner's opinion, and Spinner gives an honest evaluation of the situation. A cynical read might say that Shigaraki is figuring out if Spinner is going to ditch at this point, but Shigaraki tends towards being straightforward and frank. So it's nice to read it as Shigaraki genuinely wanting Spinner's input on their situation. Plus the fact that Spinner has stuck with Shigaraki throughout all the chaos as they fight their way through Deika is so sweet - remember how many people thought that Spinner would ditch the League when MVA was ongoing? Remember how people STILL wondered when Spinner was going to ditch?

Also not exactly cheating, I just want to call back to this moment from 224 where Spinner is the one who first clicks into Shigaraki's plan. Because of their gamer bond :) Between these two moments, I think we see that potential for synchronicity between them, as well as those early examples of Spinner's faith in Shigaraki's ability to lead the League.

3. Spinner Trying to Comfort/Check In on Shigaraki Post-SnS

I don't really have a big in depth reason for this besides the fact that it fills me with so much potent emotion. However while getting a screenshot I realised AFO was monologuing about his philosophy on friendship throughout. I am incorporating this into my most grand theory.

2. I'd Never Seen Anything Prettier...

Legitimately an insane moment that Bones WILL regret fucking cutting. But so insane, one day you're yelling at your terrorist boss about the gang's aimlessness, desperate to know where we're going, and 19 chapters later you get your answer. The warped, crumbling horizon of Chapter 239 is one of the It moments for Spinaraki, just a gorgeous scene with gorgeous commentary from Spinner. This moment was crucial to informing a lot of my early interpretations, of Spinner potentially having to decide between that promise of the horizon and the destruction of a society that has hurt all of them, or Shigaraki's health and safety, in case Shigaraki's actions turn self-destructive.

EXCEPT.

What I actually love more and think really enriches that climax is what we see from Spinner before all this.

As Machia rampages through Deika, demonstrating greater ferocity than when he was fighting the League, Spinner screams out for Shigaraki while being knocked down while fighting - and when Trumpet (beloved) decides to back out of the fight in order to get to Redestro, Spinner latches right onto the van and holds on for dear life into A Lot Of Destruction zone.

When the horror of the MVA adaptation was dawning on all of us, I had a bitch fit explaining the importance of Spinner's perspective and role as narrator, pointing out how it is that Spinner's changing feelings about Shigaraki as a leader and a person are the wraparound for Shigaraki's development this arc. I also referenced @stillness-in-green who pointed out how this arc was about how Shigaraki coming into his own as a leader and the Symbol of Fear looked to other people - Machi and Redestro are also there, awed by Shigaraki and pledging themselves to them.

Where Spinner differs is that this moment isn't the light switch for him on his Shigaraki opinions - it's a culmination of the past months. Shigaraki in the crater as Spinner waxes poetic is beautiful, but it wouldn't hit the way it does if Spinner wasn't already ride or die (literally). He care about Shigaraki before this, before he latched onto the van, before he ranted at Trumpet, before he saw Shigaraki barf after disintegrating a bunch of people - it was before the MLA ever got into contact with them that he was musing on Shigaraki's boyish smile while combatting Machia. It's good.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS BECAUSE I AM A RELENTLESS CHEAT

I already talked about brief moment when Shigaraki manages to order Machia and Spinner smiles.

The VENERABLE Chapter 295 Hand Crowning Scene (plus Compress leaving Shigaraki to Spinner, and Spinner's realization that something is wrong with Shigaraki in the following chapters). It's beautiful and haunting and tender and sooooo ripe for angst. Only in the honourables though despite being a big deal because the AFO takeover means I've had to wait even longer for Shigaraki to interact with the League again :/

Not strictly Spinaraki but the energy of it. The flashback of AFO caressing Spinner's cheek when giving him more quirks. My dears has your father-in-law ever tried his shot on ya. Also as @codenamesazanka once noted it's SO different from AFO's normal quirk giving/taking like. Cmon.

Last honourable but certainly not least:

And now the moment you've all been waiting for. My Number One Spinaraki Moment (for now).

THEE Declaration Bonus Dynamic with Toga

It was obvious before this moment that Spinner had changed his tune on Shigaraki and was willing to keep following him, and this scene in Chapter 233 was the Official Declaration As Such. One might not know that, based on how he would still keep getting comments wondering when he'd ditch the League that have only recently waned.

But what always sticks out to me is the reference to Toga - I've got nothing I love, like Toga does. Nothing I really wanna do.

In Chapter 223, Spinner asks his Machia-battling buddy, Toga, why she's still with the League despite loving Stain and there being so little of his influence left in the League. Her answer is just: love. Being a part of the League allows her to pursue her vision of love without judgement (and there's a lot to say about the harm of Toga's love, both externally and internally, how it's impacted by her abusive family life and ostracization by society, but it's still love that's real for her and means everything to her, and that harm could have been mitigated if someone bothered to understand her and accept her).

(As a side note UGH there's so much you can do with Toga & Spinner. I've had a WIP for like two years now centering on them and it's driving me crazy.)

Spinaraki would never go like, makeout point-canon. It'll be a hell of a baller move on Horikoshi's part! Imagine how funny it would be! But the Shonen Jump ain't gonna go there. But in the hypothetical situation that it DID and we got a lot of people going, "Where the hell did this come from, I thought they were just friends why is it gay now", then this moment while fighting Trumpet would be what I point to.

Spinner says here that there's nothing that he loves like Toga, nothing that he really wants to do. But by 373, there is something he wants to do - he wants to follow Shigaraki, he wants to reach Shigaraki's side, he wants to see Shigaraki stand tall. It may not seem like much to someone else, but for Spinner who spent his life until now feeling empty and purposeless, it's everything. So now, who's to say he doesn't have something that he loves?

This episode was SO GOOD holy crap. They even put the scenes of the families going about daily life! I’m so happy!

Makes me wonder what happened in the writing room lol. “Yeah so everything we cut last season ended up being important so we’re just gonna not do that ever again”

Actually a lot of this episode was like… scarily manga accurate. There were so many scenes where I could tell the exact panel it was adapting because it was THAT similar. It’s not necessarily bad when an episode doesn’t do this, I just thought it was neat. And idk why but I noticed it with this episode specifically

However, I did not need to see buff Gran Torino. That is something I could have lived without

That said, I did always think Dabi was running to Skeptic rather than casually sauntering around, but that’s how the anime usually characterizes him lol (see episode 2 of season 6). Still a good interpretation of the scene, I’m just glad they included it at all

Overall? Really solid episode. 10/10. I wasn’t expecting this episode to be anything particularly special but it was such a pleasant surprise! I loved it!

I lean on canon a lot but I also like...the complexity and greyness/fucked-upness of canon which is not usually why he's liked. I've always felt like I'm straddling the line of fan and hater because I see what the haters see but I like him more for that. Anyway, ultimately, he's just a character who Horikoshi puts so much work into and I tend to really admire characters who you can tell the author just has a lot of particular love for.

Enji needs to step up as a dad yes but that can't happen if he's out of the picture. Moreover wasn't Fuyumi's dream to have a family dinner with all of them sitting together around the table including her father?? Are we really going to ignore her wishes?? And Shouto who wants to see Enji finally become the father he was meant to be? And most of all Touya who just wanted to be with his family and that also includes Endeavor bruh

I get it, I've been saying I get it for almost 3 years now. My opinions have changed damn near 180 in most things, but my understanding of why people don't want Endeavor in the picture hasn't disappeared.

But we're almost 400 chapters in and at this point it's literally not the manga's fault if people are unhappy. If people want an ending where the abuser, whose arc is about trying to do better--and actually doing better in some capacity--with some bumps along the way, is given absolutely 0 grace from the family he broke and for the family to tell him to fuck off and never come around again, well, I feel like it's been obvious for a very long time that this is not that. It kinda just feels like denial to cope because it went this direction. Again, I get wanting that and don't think that's wrong or a story that shouldn't be told, but this is not that story. Horikoshi isn't obligated to tell that story ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ he's just not. He doesn't owe anybody anything, but I feel we're blessed enough that we get a coherent, narratively sound story that actually follows through on almost EVERYTHING put in place, at some point, in some way, even if the pacing isn't the best suited for a weekly release.

My understanding kinda stops though when people just....straight up make shit up and ignore what's on the page. I mean I don't care what the opinion is at that point. If someone is deliberately ignoring images put on pages because they don't like them, well I don't care to discuss tbh. Also thinking about recent anons I've gotten, saying things like "if Endeavor is with his family it ignores everything he does", well, no it doesn't. That's just not true as the story has not ignored anything at all nor has his family, so that's just a blatantly false statement and I also won't take the time to discuss there either. Idk.

has only genuinely broken down emotionally in front of deku, and has only been moderately comfortable with deku (and all might) seeing him as weak. as far as I'm aware, no other student has seen him cry before

is willing to die for deku. he is willing to lose everything - his quirk, his privileged life, his future - for deku

it's heavily implied that this comment was super out of nowhere, and nothing like what bakugou usually says to deku. his friends said that was really out of line. bakugou was probably also aware of how harsh it was. it's further shown in the small heroes rising promo manga, "deku and bakugou rising" (I think that's the name), that bakugou typically ignored deku and let him do his own thing, with only a couple mild verbal jabs here and there (the insults aren't even special to bakugou - deku was quirkless, meaning that he was getting teased by literally everyone in the messed up quirk society)

deku didn't take this comment to heart and canonically cared more about BAKUGOU'S reputation after saying something so insensitive. he never once thought about actually "taking a swan dive". he may have low self esteem but he's not THAT swayed by outside opinion. in fact, he's really fucking stubborn and nobody has phased him from his hero dream except all might, his literal childhood idol, in the second chapter/episode. and even that lasted for like 5 minutes lol

people are allowed to grow and change into better people, janica. that's called character development. it's called growth in the real world.

it’s a special case with him, and it’s not really a very obvious excuse, and it’s not one people have expected out of him!

theories of his classmates are his way to go. they’re so sudden but.. it’s also very in character, to the point that no one dares to question a thing. those theories might seem a little absurd or silly, sometimes outlandish, but seeing your facial expressions change whenever you drink in a point, makes his heart race.

there seems to be a time of day where shotō decides to let you know about his ideas. you’d ask him why he’s very specific about it, but he can only shrug, as he continues on whatever he was thinking about.

shotō’s still new to the realm of romantic feelings. it’s almost as if he’s a newborn, setting foot into the world, still testing the waters. consider the fact that he didn’t grow up with the best examples of love and you know who.

you’d definitely understand, right? i mean, it might seem a little odd, but it’s endearing, knowing that he only goes to you, just to report on the latest theories.

the good thing about having a crush, is that they’re also a nice motivator. that’s what eijirō enjoys the most about having crushes. well.. not the most-most, but you get what i mean. you’ve always motivated him to be the best version of himself (not that the other characters aren’t motivated by you but.. it’s more evident in eijirō.)

he’s constantly trying out more combos, just so he could show you. sometimes, he finds himself making up moves in the shower, or sometimes even when he’s laying down in bed. it’s really all so he could show up the next day, and show you another manly move! i mean.. he definitely doesn’t have an ulterior motive, and it’s definitely not because he’s constantly finding excuses, so he could see and talk to you, nope.

..that’s what he always says, when he’s being relentlessly teased to death by mina and kaminari. oh well, he’ll need to gather the guts some day! but for now.. he’s fine with this, as long as you’re content with it too :)
