Cemetery Etiquette

When in doubt err on the side of caution

Greet the guardian/ gatekeeper spirit and maybe leave them a gift like black coffee or some fancy coins

Don’t walk on graves- it’s rude and you’re stepping on people

Don’t take anything without permission from the spirits and living family if there is any

Only take dirt from the perimeter or walkways not from actual graves

Respect the dead, their beliefs, and their boundaries- there may be religious spirits who want nothing to do with you, or just spirits who don’t want to work with you. Respect their wishes- they aren’t up for debate

Respect your local laws- usually applies to offerings, open hours, taking things, etc

Say goodbye and thank the spirits when you leave

do you actually dislike typing indicators? (genuine, interested and not confrontational.) I find them really helpful, so I know when people are finished talking. I find it much easier to have natural flowing conversation with them, and struggle when they're not working.

I do legit find read receipts a thing of evil, though It's way too easy for me to like, worry-obsess over what someone's thinking of me when I see that they've Seen my text or whatever and haven't replied back; even though I know, bc I also totally do this,, that in a lot of situations it just takes time to make a response and / or due to brain weasels (e.g. adhd or depression, or mundane super busy-ness), and no reflection of their feelings about me, they straight-up forgot after they saw it

Low energy Devotional Acts for when you don’t have a lot of energy (or time, or money, etc.) pt. 8

“I'm getting the… heebie jeebies” You rolled your eyes at Stu as you walked in between him and billy walking up to the gate of your local cemetery and you were sure you heard Billy huff for the fifth time in twenty minutes as you held a bouquet of deep red roses against the black velvet of your dress you bell cape sleeves dropping down to you cover the green stems of the bouquet Billy climbed the gate first a little grunt resting on his lips as he made it over making sure to bend his knees when he dropped to the floor

“Your turn princess, help her over idiot” Billy stated before hissing at the blonde who playfully pouted at him in response

“Be nice.” You whispered sternly at the brunette as he grumbled something under his breath holding his hands up to catch you Stu suddenly swept you off your feet quite literally causing you to gasp slightly at the quick movement shaking your head with a smile on your face as you watched him whistle while looking around trying to hold the smile off from etching itself on his face but soon your position was changing once again now your knees placed on the blades of his shoulders

“Oh babe I should take my shoes off” You winced at the thought of your heavy platform boots being planted into your boyfriends skin listening to the sound of protest leave his throat as he held onto you thigh to keep you from swinging them off his clavicles

“Ive took a knife to the shoulder one chase these are nothin’ kitty” The blue eyed boy reassured a goofy smile on his face that was practically permanent there as you sighed nodding your head before you carefully placed one foot on each shoulder pressing your body against the fence looking ahead as the moon set over the graveyard

“The view looks so nice, the pictures are gonna be great” You decided talking to no one in particular a small film of fog falling over the place

“Maybe, but I got a real good view right here” You heard Stu whisper looking down to see his head covered by your black floor length dress jabbing your foot into the side of his neck digging into his jugular as he hissed at the sensation Billy chuckling at the sight while you swung you leg over the gate before hopping down into the brunettes arms who caught you with ease setting you down gently giving you time for you to steady yourself as you checked over the roses that were gratefully uncrushed

Stu was next his lanky figure making it easier to get up and over the fence without much difficulty and soon you all began to walk along one of the trailways the crickets chirping gently for some of the last times they will this year until spring rolls back around but that was then in this is now you tugged the long sleeves of your boyfriends sweaters making your way into the grass being careful to not to step on and head stones embedded into the ground the grass crunching underneath your boots

“Think right here is good moon is set” Billy stated camera hanging from his neck as you nodded holding your bouquet looking around until a cross shaped head stone came into your line of sight you approached it paying a silent respect to the dead before turning around to face the boys

“STU! Watch your step!” The blonde slightly flinched at the sudden noise apologizing gently making sure to not step on any imbedded porcelain as Billy postponed the camera up to his eye taking a canon photo of you before attention averted back to him at the sound of the fluttering shutter before poking your leg from the split in your dress, cradling the roses with your ring covered fingers, staring dead at the men in front of you with a small smirk on your face

The brunette let out a low whistle the sound of his camera going wild while the blonde quickly clicked his tongue to the roof of his mouth repeatedly making sounds with his mouth watching as you struck different poses each one leaving him starstruck with hearts in his eyes

“How do I look?” You questioned after a while now situated on the grass you back lying against the greenery and your knee propped up towards the sky skin glowing under the moon the darker makeup enhancing your features

“Sexiest vamp i've ever laid my eyes on”

“Please step on me”

You giggled at the praise it enhancing your confidence as your rolled your hand down you body and Billy was sure your the memory card would be full by the time he was done but it was a key piece taking up storage after all

After about an hour you took all the pictures you could and now you hummed setting down one of the last of you dozen roses on the last headstone you came across before you walked up towards your lovers pressing a kiss on each cheek leaving your mark on both of them as walking ahead with a smirk

“You guys coming or are you gonna keep standing there? You'll be dead by daylight”

Help! Death is inconvenient!

Dear Prudence, Slate, 6 December 2022:

Q. Bothersome Burials: Is it appropriate to hold a funeral on a Saturday? I have recently noticed that funerals are more frequently being held on Saturdays instead of weekdays and I think it is bad etiquette. On most Saturdays, we already have plans for weddings, baby showers, birthday parties, ski trips, softball tournaments, etc. and I am perturbed when we are expected to change those plans to attend funerals. It seems to me that when you lose someone very close to you that you should be taking time off of work anyway rather than waiting until your scheduled day off to have a funeral and grieve. When you lose an acquaintance, or perhaps do not know the deceased but still want to support your friends and family, you should be able to limit it to a few hours during the week and not give up your weekend plans. Also, it seems inconsiderate to make the funeral home and cemetery staff work on a Saturday. I believe that Saturdays should be off-limits, am I mistaken about this?

Dear Bothersome Burials,

Funerals should absolutely never be held on Saturdays, for all of the excellent reasons you describe. It is inconsiderate in the extreme to interrupt people's ski trips even for legitimate reasons (whatever they may be — nothing immediately springs to mind, but the Bad Advisor is sure someone somewhere will be able to drudge up an example). To derail a romp on the slopes for something as inconsequential as a community gathering to grieve the departure of a beloved friend or family member from the plane of existence as we know it frankly defies comprehension. For the snuffing out of one's mortal lamplight to cause scheduling conflicts around more minor commitments such as weddings and baby showers is naturally a lesser infraction — attendees can always simply RSVP to the next one, or the one after that — but nevertheless impolite. Of course, few will share your deep concern for the wellbeing of those death professionals who work on Saturdays despite undoubtedly being, as you are, shocked by and entirely unprepared to accommodate the customs and traditions surrounding the inevitable fate, old as life itself, that awaits all of us. But your selflessness is noted here nonetheless.

If you are mistaken about anything, it is in failing to interrogate the cause of these breaches of etiquette. There was a time when people treated each other with just a little more consideration — when we left our doors unlocked, our unvaccinated children played together barefoot in the streets until dawn, and we dropped dead when and only when it was convenient for people's busy weekend schedules. My mother would have rather died than shuffle off the mortal coil just before Little Maydelayne's big softball tournament! Sadly, people these days think only of themselves, their own needs, and their own petty concerns — to say nothing of their unwillingness to sacrifice a day of fun and fulfilling work to attend the final celebration of life for some douchebag who had the gall to kick the bucket without checking their second cousin's day-off calendar first. Grief is already experienced for only those fleeting moments we spend attending funeral services; it is unseemly to defer our limited 40- to 90-minute mourning periods until such a time as we can gather together in meaningful community.

Alas, that's the world we live in today! We can lay much of the blame on the obvious culprits — video games, reefer, and heavy metal music — but we would be doing ourselves a disservice if we did not admit that we are responsible for making time for what matters. The next time a cherished friend, loved one, or colleague sets off on that long, mysterious journey to the undiscovered country, we must prioritize the apres-ski reservations at the lodge bar.

Working In Graveyards & Graveyard Etiquette🕯

Why Incorporate Graveyards?

Graveyards have always been associated with the supernatural and metaphysical. In both ancient and modern cultures, funerary rights and the dead have always held great significance in society. When working in these spaces, the most important thing to remember is respect. The dead are not as mutable as the living and it may take longer to rectify a mistake and earn their trust again than it would have been to learn the proper etiquette from the start.

Which begs the question, why work in these spaces and with these spirits? Well lots of reasons, some people choose to only work in graveyards that they have a direct ancestral connection with (ie. family members or distant relative are buried there). Others, like myself, find it a good way to honour the local spirits. Even spirits of people you don't know and have no connection too are worth honouring. Some people believe that since all of humanity has a common ancestor, we are all related and so even cemeteries you have no direct connection to, are connected to you by our common ancestor (another reason I am quite fond of). Maybe you just think it's cool, which is valid. Whatever your reason, just make sure you have one and are not going there with insincere intentions.

What is Graveyard Etiquette?

Graveyard etiquette are the ways in which we should behave when entering and visiting a graveyard in order to be respectful to those resting there. Although there are general rules of thumb which many witches follow, as you develop a relationship with a particular graveyard, those customs can change. Here are some I like to follow:

Leaving an offering- I always bring an offering of coins or flowers. If I'm visiting a graveyard that I've never been to before, I will leave coins at the gate, for the guardian and at some of the older and unkept headstone (also graves of young children if I find any). During regular visits, I leave offerings with the guardian and at headstones of spirits I've developed a relationship with.

Walking the entire graveyard- this is not something I do every time but I like to walk around the entire site and introduce myself especially if I plan on having a working relationship with the spirits there (this may be more difficult for larger sites, I recommend picking an new area each time you visit if that is the case).

Entering and leaving through the same gate- this is not one I stick to every time if I know the spirits really well. If I've never visited before I will always leave through the same exit that I entered from.

Throwing salt or spinning- I heard this one from ChaoticWitchAunt (on TikTok) and it's something that I've just always done. They recommended spinning around three times before leaving to prevent spirits from following you home. I've also thrown a bit of salt over my left shoulder outside the entrance for the same purpose (beware: salt is not good for the earth). This is definitely something that just resonated with me after a bad experience and that's why I continue to do it.

A Note on Necromancy & Death work:

Necromancy is often a term used in many scary movies and cult fiction. It is actually a form of divination which utilizes the dead. Anyone can learn necromancy however it is an integral part of death work. Death worker (practitioners who practice death work) are involved with crossing spirits over. The job requires some level of mediumship abilities and can be very taxing on your mental health. Some death workers take on the lingering emotions of the deceased (pain, fear, anger, etc.) in order to help that spirit. Death work is much more than the small bit that I've described but it is important to note that the path is not for everyone. You can still work in cemeteries and utilize necromancy without doing death work (& a big thank you to the death workers who continue on their path despite the toll it takes, we love you!).

If anybody else wants to use the "tourists help support the Quileute tribe because of Twilight" argument, let's look at the fact that the Quileute literally had to put up a photography & visitor etiquette manual for tourists when visiting La Push because an MSN film crew making a Twilight virtual tour went to the reservation & filmed a Quileute cemetery featuring the graves of respected elders & added "scary" music to it, all without permission

The tribe was understandably upset & I believe got them to remove it, but the fact that people even did that is fucked up. Mind you as well that the coast and the two islands near La Push are sacred to Quileute, and of course now its crawling with twilight tourists. More than that, the Quileute Tribal Secretary of LA Push (idk if she still is, but definitely at the time) Naomi Jacobson said that the producers of Twilight visited her cousin's home to get a feel for La Push, and they were literally surprised that the reserve & the Native population there was modernized and had technology and shit. 🙄 like sorry not sorry we don't fit your Noble savage image of us.

It is not a fucking good thing that the Quileute (or ANY Native tribe who became well known because of some movie or book) has to smile and grin and cater to White people & annoying tourists just to make some money. Especially the Quileute being targeted by a White Mormon (who literally believe Native people are evil, and also kidnapped and/or assimilated around 50,000 Native children ) and the white fans who defend her.

I don't know anything about England but I'm interested in how the characters' locations inform their characters like Seward's. I'd like to know more about the implications of being from Purfleet/Essex for example (Though iirc Stoker immigrated from Dublin well into adulthood so I don't know how well he knew all the cities.)

there's so much to be said! i really don't think that stoker meant much intentionally, but the placement of the asylum in purfleet specifically is interesting.

long post so i'm cutting this!

the asylum at purfleet, essex, is an example of the common 19th-early 20th century phenomenon of establishing psychiactric hospitals in the rural counties surrounding london - simultaneously serving as a 'tranquil' location away from the city, while also serving the dubious, cruel purpose of squirelling away would-be patients into residences away from the city - out of society, out of sight, out of mind.

in terms of jack seward himself, purfleet is a kind of an in-between, nothing place - things and people pass through, not much stays. (there's a reason why whitby is remembered as 'the dracula place', and not purfleet.) it's quite literally on the edge of london - of society - and in that scene where jack's looking despondently towards the sun setting west over london, his own isolation becomes palpable - from society and from the world as a whole. the endless, transient, liminal feel of the essex saltmarshes just....gives the vibe. this was a scene that felt particularly gothic to me - jack is the custodian of his very own haunted house, here, in all its bleak, isolated glory.

It was a shock to me to turn from the wonderful smoky beauty of a sunset over London, with its lurid lights and inky shadows and all the marvellous tints that come on foul clouds even as on foul water, and to realise all the grim sternness of my own cold stone building, with its wealth of breathing misery, and my own desolate heart to endure it all.

this is an fascinating parallel with the count's situation in transylvania, which is NOT the topic du jour here so i'll stop before i ramble but compelling nonetheless! like the count, though, he's a liminal figure - in london, but not quite in london. in the group, but not in the group. alive, but not really living. wide awake in the witching hour, unsure how to re-integrate with society.

it's also worth noting that the opening of dickens' great expectations has pip in his childhood home on the kent marshes - which would pretty much be the opposite bank of the thames from purfleet. in great expectations, pip's village serves a similar role - the quiet, bleak, nowhere-place directly placed against the bustling cosmopolis of london.

in terms of other characters and locations, i've written a bit before about jonathan (and mina possibly) hailing from exeter, devon, in the south west of england - which is much further from london.

jonathan and mina, in terms of the group dynamics, are outsiders: they're very much lower middle class, hyper-aware of the importance of money and societal etiquette as a means for survival and social betterment. this is a personal hc of mine, but i like to think of jonathan as having the long supressed remnants of a devon accent. south west accents are often the subject of a lot of ridicule and mockery in the UK (akin to a southern US accent) and hiding that regionalism, in both the 1890s and today's britain, would be a means of survival and progress for him - i think the fact that he's always given a standard home counties RP accent in adaptations cuts out a major aspect of his character. he's a devon boy!

in contrast to all this, lucy's hampstead residence shows her affluence. it, too, at risk of breaking my social isolation metaphor, was on the edge of london at the time - but was known more as a wealthy suburb with huge areas of greenery at hampstead heath and highgate. there's something to be said, though, about a place like highgate cemetery - a liminal place between the dead and the living, between city and country, haunted at night by a vampire - and the same could be said for purfleet.

arthur is hard to pin down - for the life of me i CANNOT work out where 'ring' is supposed to be - at first i thought it might be a shortening for ringwood, hampshire, which could work! but i just don't know. his character does scream privileged southern/home counties though, and if anyone has any followups on 'ring' and its wherabouts i would LOVE to know because this has been bugging me for ages. lmao

tl;dr, psychology and sociology as informed by place is SO fucking fascinating to me like it just. it affects so much. from the liminality of certain places lending themselves to the supernatural, to characters being mirrored by their surroundings and vice versa, to the social implications of where you call home. it's just!!! interesting!!

Vampirekin tips

Things I do to make me feel more connected to my vampire self.

🦇 - wearing cool sunglasses. i have a whole collection including red tinted ones and bat shaped ones

🪦 - carrying around a small vial of my home soil. In old vampire stories such as Dracula, vampires have to carry soil from their homeland with them when they go abroad. I just got some dirt from my backyard and put it in a small jar that I carry with me when I go out.

🍷 - adding food colouring to drinks - red hot chocolate is amazing

🕯️- lighting candles, especially grave lights. you can get scented candles and grave lights at pretty much any supermarket very cheap, or if you wanna get fancy with it you can get bleeding candles on amazon and Etsy.

⚰️ - lying on my back with my arms crossed. I don’t sleep in that position but I use it to relax or when meditating or listening to music.

🥀 - taking strolls around the cemetery at night, talking to the ghosts and tending to graves. just remember to be respectful and follow grave yard etiquette!

Danny phantom dc crossover idea:

Clone at the grave

Idk how but Danny ends up in gotham. Except da boi is a lil messed up. Aspects of his ghost form are peeking through in his human forms.

This inculdes

Green eyes (lowkey glow sometimes)

Some white hair

Some scars he got in Ghost form.

He also has a vivisection scar (could be part of reason he is there). There are also other various scars some that used to only show on his ghost form but are now on his human form, it's overall concerning.

The thing is Danny is also a bit bloody (red blood) and looking like he was in a fight. So he looks for a safe place and what better than to follow some kind ghosts from Gotham's cemetery. He's the King and Gotham (I love sentient ghost/spirit gotham) for some odd reason is like 'I like this kid/king so no spooky shit to hurt him' also in the cemetery I think there is just etiquette for the ghosts to not hurt each other and be respectful seeing as that is their final resting place. Anyways he's led to a grave and to just sit and chill and try to heal or overall not fully die.

Unbeknownst to him, he is sitting on the grave of formally dead Jason Todd. A grave that the bats have some surveillance on cause ya know of course they would have surveillance on an empty grave. So when poor old Danny is chilling there, the bats are made aware. When they look what they see is what honestly looks similar to a dead Jason Todd, albiet a bit smaller and white hair tuft not the exact same. And considering that Jason is very much (sorta) alive and not at the cemetery, they come to the conclusion that 'hey is that a clone?' Which is a very concerning question.

Cue bats taking a trip and coming close to the 'body' cause really it seemed like a dead body. But then Danny moves, opens his eyes and Boom ya got green, eerily close to Lazarus green which only increases their belief that this dude may possibly be some sort of clone.

So we got confused, suspicious, (concerned) bats. And meanwhile Danny is just ??? With seeing these dudes sorta surrounding him in a cemetery where he is still injured.

Now what happens next could go various ways.

They could go on the agressive detain and ask questions later.

There could be a fight.

Danny may use his spooky abilties to disappear.

Danny may simply fall unconscious and leave the bats to deal with him.

Danny could confuse them with sassiness,

OR he could be like 'ayo help would be appreciated'

OR he could be like 'can't a guy chill in a cemetery by himself'.

Overall the possibility of him leaving with the bats or going off by himself is up in the air and really depends on what type of vibes you want in this story.

Some fun things that could be included...

Bats insistent that Danny is a clone while Danny is like 'No'

OR Danny legit going like 'wait really a clone? Tell me more'

Maybe Jason and Danny meet on the street and are just like that Spiderman meme.

OR they meet and are like hey 'dead buddies' type deal

OR they meet and Jason is suspicious and shit

Batfamily members asking why there are two Jasons, wondering why one is smaller and how his hair changes.

Danny hiding from the bats causing confusion and chaos along the way

Hello batfamily adoption, Bruce reputation preceeds him.

Some 👀 when they see the vivisection/autopsy scar (maybe they don't even know its actually a vivisection until later)

Danny's spookiness peaking out more and more

Maybe at some point or something one of the magic users like Zatanna or Constantine encounter Danny and they are def unsettled. Maybe they can't tell he's the ghost king or a halfa but they know something is wrong. Maybe they knew Jason was a bit wonky in the death sense but they are like "this 'clone' is on a whole other level of fucked". This of course makes the bats wanna investigate more about the 'creation' of cloneDanny, wondering what is his purpose and how he came to be Danny and in gotham and why.

Ya know I like to think that Danny never actually tells them he's a halfa. Cause, ya know secrets and also who is he to crush their clone theory dreams.

The thing is, is that they def think Danny is a really spooky and unsettling 'clone'. Seemingly more dead than alive than Jason is. They never have moments where they think Jason is not actually breathing. His eyes seem more glowy green than Jason's and his tuft of hair seems to glow occasionally but so quick that you think it's a trick of the light. He seems so quiet and his 'presence' isn't that of a normal human. Sometimes they forget Danny is close by.

It makes them think of how Jason could have come back.

One thing I think would be present is that Danny is having issues with changing forms which was why they were sorta mixing. So when he finally is able to fully separate and they see his blue eyes, and fully black hair and they turn to Damian and are like 'ya know you two actually look pretty simi-'

So yeah this is an idea I've been in the process of figuring out. Lots of possibilities though, but if anyone also wants to have some fun with this, please do!! Never can have too many cakes after all.

Death Magick is the use of the death in your craft. The death can be a physical representation but it does not have to be. Although the exact origin is hard to pinpoint, this practice has been in many different cultures and religions for many years.

As Death Magick is very versatile, each practitioner has a different way of going about it. Death Magick can include, but not limited to, working with ancestors, spirit work, bone work, cemetery work, deceased animals/insects, dead/dying plants, Necromancy and more. Death Magick can help with overcoming death related trauma.

I often read and hear people use Death Magick and Necromancy interchangeably. Necromancy is the art of divination with the dead. While Death Magick contains all other forms of working with death energy and death. Not every Death Witch is a Necromancer but every Necromancer is a Death Witch.

While not every witch partakes in going to graveyards, for many practitioners it is a huge part of their craft. A very basic explanation is the guidelines set in place to ensure you respect the dead as well as protect yourself from the spirits that inhabit the graveyard. Respect should be given to living and the dead equally.

Hello Mrs Bree! 👋

I wanted to ask if there are some etiquette tips when dealing with spirits?

I might be getting a job as a groundskeeper at a cemetery and just want to be respectful, even if those burried there follow a very different path than my own.

I've always had spirits visiting me and my mom since we were both young. (The universe likes to send me those who are dead and/or dying, it seems.) So spirits following me don't bother me too much, but I don't want to outright offend any either or bring them home to my partner.

No rush on a response!

May your week be filled with all that you need and love that warms like a hearth on a chilly autumn morning!

I don't do very much spirit work. Actually, I tend to avoid it like the plague. But generally speaking, I think everyday manners are a good place to start.

If you're working in a cemetery, you're more likely to encounter human spirits than anything else (statistically speaking), so just treat them the way you'd treat the living - with care and respect and kindness. Don't talk to them like brainless children (unless of course they ARE children, in which case just be extra patient and resist the urge to babytalk) and don't automatically jump to Possible Threat like the ghost hunting shows always seem to. Just be polite, set boundaries where you need to, respect their space, and mind your manners.

And speaking from personal experience working in a mildly haunted environment, try to have a sense of humor about it. Nine times out of ten, even the most mischievous happenings are just dead people being bored. Like, "Oh that's the third time this month the coffee tray in the break room has moved to the other side of the counter. Very funny, Matilda."

And if something feels grouchy or mean or just plain Leave Me Alone, try to just avoid them where possible and don't panic. The human dead are perfectly capable of being assholes without any need to conjure demons where none exist.

All this being said, burial grounds tend to be less haunted than you might think. Most of the residents are sleeping or have moved on. Other people's grief and regret can sometimes hang in the air, so make sure you take that into account if you're especially sympathetic. (Yes, sympathetic. Not empathic. Different beast.) And of course, a little personal protection in the form of a charm or talisman is always worth the investment.
