#charm analysis
Note
Could you analyze the canon charm pairs we see on page 6007 of homestuck?— itchy (pot o gold, horseshoes, balloons)/doze (rainbow, moon, hearts) and trace(diamonds, star, horseshoe)/clover(pot o gold, hearts, clover)?
AHAHAAAA YES OK
I will go at these through the idea of these as examples of troves rather than feelings they have for a particular other and discuss what each trove bracelet would consist of in their entirety, because each charm in a bracelet effects how the others are expressed. I also got your other ask and i will also cover the charms mentioned in TIDOMS.
Itchy and Pot o' Gold/Horseshoes/Balloons: I noted in my charm post initially that Gold/Balloons may be similar to "work-wives", the idea of having someone at work separate from your romantic partner at home whom you are emotionally close to and find mutual support and companionship in without the romantic angle. Adding Horseshoes to this may result in the type of bracelet that would form between coworkers who act as confidantes, commiserate on similar feelings, and may lack an angle of physical intimacy. I actually think this fits very well for Itchy, and this may be the kind of dynamic he has with Trace and Fin, although without the charm labels, where they bitch about Crowbar and having to do their jobs. A Horseshoes/Balloons combination de-fangs Balloons somewhat- It lessens the typical intensity of emotional connection and comfort by nature of its casualness, so it's good for that kind of mild emotional constipation I imagine most of the Felt have. Doze and Rainbows/Moons/Hearts: This is a fun one- Rainbows contributes to this relationship being very circumstantial and impermanent, but Moons is about distance and charm-mates coming back together and parting reliably. Hearts of course is conventional romance and mutual feelings. This creates what I would call a summer love trove- charm-mates in a bracelet like this would likely see each other very rarely, possibly only in a specific place: ex. where they vacation, or a certain annual event, or something along those lines, but when they do, its impassioned and deeply romantic, before parting with little to no communication until the next time that event happens- This is a very fun little crush-feelings setup, very "worlds apart" trysts energy. I don't know if this would come up for Doze personally, and if so, with whom- but its definitely fun.
Trace and Diamonds/Stars/Horseshoes: This one's a bit complicated. Diamonds invokes calignous-adjacent feelings, stars invokes respect/adoration, and Horseshoes invokes a casual friendliness and comraderie. The resultant feelings for this trove might create a relationship, for example, between two competitive athletes of similar skills, who admire one another's abilities, and face off actively- as if on opposite teams who clash regularly in a team sport. This could also be replicated in competing employees who are still coworkers and maintain a friendly veneer while spitting insults and snarling behind closed doors. I can see this kind of relationship being similar to what Trace and Fin had when they first met, actually. Their abilities put them in a unique position with one another, and they've mellowed into Diamonds/Hearts/Clovers since (with a light unhealthiness in Clovers, derived from their mild dissatisfaction and upsets that they refuse to communicate with each other about to risk breaking the Clovers, but readily discuss with their Balloons).
Clover and Pot o' Gold/Hearts/Clovers: this trove implies businesslike transaction, romantic love and mutual reciprocation, and a relationship that highlights the best of both charm-mates effortlessly. Cans and Crowbar have a steady Clovers/Pot o' Gold relationship, which is a good example to look at- Cans' is his own asset, his size and strength make him particularly useful to Crowbar, and Crowbar's direction and tactical instructions make Cans more effective as a fighter, and employee under Lord English. Very transactional in nature. Their Clovers' rides off of the Gold, as their relationship brings out the best in each other, primarily on a business level. Crowbar feels like an effective leader when commanding Cans properly, and when the two work together, and Cans feels most useful and respected when he does a good job, and Crowbar is both proud of him, and making best use of his skills. Cans carries a Star for Crowbar as well, in relation to this dynamic. Adding a Hearts charm to their bracelet would simply invoke a more romantic intimacy, and likely break their Clovers charm which is already strained slightly by the communication necessary in their working relationship. In terms of Clover, he could likely a relationship of this type easiest with Deuce. Clover carries pitch for Deuce and Deuce does reciprocate, but he isn't a very hateful person to begin with, and if he could wrap his head around charms (which few non-leprechauns can), this may be one form their relationship could take if they were to work together.
FINALLY: TIDOMS
Balloons is a charm that has a lot of emotional vulnerability, goodwill and patience involved, and as Crowbar manages the Felt he often sees just how uncooperative, unkind, and stubborn they can get, I'm not surprised he would believe they're all unfit for Balloons. Crowbar doesn't know how they were interacting or what in particular Clover had been propositioning Itchy with, but does suggest Horseshoes as another possibility, and I agree that this is a good guess. Itchy and Clover would probably make for decent Balloons though, if a big part of their repartee is teasing one another and physical pranks. As Clovers/Horseshoes, they also don't communicate extensively, and Balloons is importantly about emotions and vulnerability- which neither of them are super willing to go into detail with one another, in case it ruins the magic.
I hope you enjoyed this little too-long tangent!

putting this here, HELLO CCCC FANS!! i hate hate hate when people mischaracterize Mind as emotionless like noo :(( he can feel emotions like worry, excitement, confusion and sympathy and all that. sure Mind is blunt and mean but that is his nature and I'm sure he is not grumpy almost all the time. (he can get excited for something for god's sake >:(
Mind is more verbal about his own thoughts than Heart's so that's why he's more judgemental (or seen as) but Heart's nature is also as vile as Mind's, there is no good or bad in this story (see them as not so black and white)
one more thingy, i think Mind often hides his feelings from Heart and Soul because he feels embarrassed to express them. so he's also a victim of his thoughts, they're inevitable

what would tom riddle's patronus?
Okay, it took me some time to answer this ask since I needed to spend some time thinking. I didn't really have an answer in mind until your question. It's just something I apparently never thought about. So I was interested in finding the most canon-adjacent answer I can for if Tom Riddle/Voldemort could cast a patronus, what would it be.
So, my approach to finding the right animal was based on a few factors, the first of which:
How exactly is the form your Patronus takes determined?
Because we don't actually get a straight answer in the books. We know Patroni can change with a person, but we don't exactly get an answer on what their form represents and why some couples have matching Patroni.
Basically, I don't know what you expected, Anon, but what you're getting is some rambling about the magical theory behind the Patronus charm followed by why that means Tom gets a certain animal over another.
So, let's start with the basics, the incantation:
"Expecto Patronum"
This is in Latin and literally translates to: "I await/expect a defender"
And Remus Lupin explains what the Patronus charm is as:
“Well, when it works correctly, it conjures up a Patronus,” said Lupin, “which is a kind of anti-dementor — a guardian that acts as a shield between you and the dementor.” ... “The Patronus is a kind of positive force, a projection of the very things that the dementor feeds upon — hope, happiness, the desire to survive — but it cannot feel despair, as real humans can, so the dementors can’t hurt it. But I must warn you, Harry, that the charm might be too advanced for you. Many qualified wizards have difficulty with it.”
(POA, page 237)
We also know the patronus is cast by thinking of a happy memory — well, not really. The memory isn't really important; the emotion is. The memory is to help you have the right happy feelings that can fuel a Patronus. "You got to mean it" just like with an unforgivable.
So, what does it tell us about the Patronus:
We have a defender made out of happiness, literally.
This already sounds like something Tom Riddle would struggle with. I don't really see canon Tom Riddle/Voldemort being capable of producing one, but let's assume he can in some hypothetical AU. Let's take a look at a few patroni to see how their form is chosen and why.
Obviously, we have Harry's (and James') stag. A stag symbolizes many things in different cultures, but deer (both Stags and Does, like Lily and Snape) in general symbolize:
The cycle of life and death
Agility and grace
Bravery
Nobility
All this fits the Potters quite well. The nobility and bravery of Gryffindor and the cycle between life and death. Stags actually represent regeneration, as in a return from death, which fits with the Potters' connection to the Paverells and death perfectly.
Stags also symbolize authority, strength, leadership, and fatherhood, while does symbolize femininity, grace, intuition, and devotion. All in all, both animals fit James and Lily well. And while the stag does fit Harry (to a degree), I don't think his Patronus represents him.
I think Harry's patronus is a stag because James' patronus was a stag. Harry was actually convinced his father cast the Patronus when he first saw it in POA. And it makes sense.
I don't remember where I saw this theory, but it essentially was that your patrons would represent a person or an idea that you feel will defend you. It's why certain couples have matching Patroni, why a Patronus can change when you or your feelings about people change.
And Harry, when he casts his Patronus, the idea of his father who he never knew but would have protected him is the idea represented in Harry's Patronus. It's a stag like James' not because Harry and James are so similar (they have very different personalities actually) but because Harry's Patronus is James. It's a stag because James was a stag, and Harry is calling the concept of his father to defend him.
Following this logic, Lily's Patronus is a doe, because she is the doe. Lily's defender is herself. Courageous, noble, graceful and devoted. Lily's devotion to her son is what literally sets the series into motion. The reason she and James match is that they always have. He was always represented by the stag and she was always represented by the doe. Their Patroni aren't matching because of their relationship with each other, but because they are so compatible their Patroni matched from the get-go.
Snape's Patronus is a doe because of Lily. Lily is represented by the doe. As she was Snape's first friend and defender, whenever he calls for a protector, it's Lily.
Let's look at a few other Patroni, like Hermione's otter:
Playfulness
Joy
Family and close-knit friendships
Loyalty
All of this doesn't really sound like Hermione. Ron's Jack Russell Terrier on the other hand:
Loyalty
Courage
Playfulness
Cleverness
Protectiveness
Tanasity
Does sound very in line with who Ron is.
But then who does Hermione's otter represent? Well, an otter is from the weasel family and the list of characteristics looks closer to Ron's list of traits than Hermione's. I think Hermione's otter represents Ron who did step in to defend her since the troll incident in their first year multiple times.
So, where does that leave Tom Riddle?
Well, we established the Patronus becomes your defender, and in Tom's case, it'll be himself. Tom is distrustful and sees himself as more capable than anyone else. Not to mention he never had a real connection or person in his life he could call upon to defend him. So, whatever animal his Patronus is would represent himself as his own defender.
So, which animal represents Tom best?
The first animal I thought of, is of course: the serpent. Snakes are heavily associated with Tom (for obvious reasons) and is an animal we know he has a soft spot for. When looking at what snakes represent, you can see why he is associated with them:
Deceit
Transformation
Power
Regeneration and rebirth (shedding their skin)
Healing (Cadcadeus)
For the most part, the list seems to fit him well. Specifically their association with rebirth and the cycle of life and death by shedding their skin. Deceit and power are also right up Tom's alley. And even transformation considering he rewrote his entire identity to become Voldemort.
But, just "snake" wasn't good enough for me, I wanted to know which kind. And as I wanted his Patronus to be as rare as Harry's stag, I went to the list of official Pottermore possible Patroni to find a snake that is as hard to get in the test as the stag while not being magical.
(Magical Patroni are incredibly rare and to have yourself represented by a magical creature in your Patronus you need to be incredibly unique or incredibly full of yourself. At least, that's how I see it)
And low and behold, there was one on the aforementioned list:
The King Cobra
So I looked up if this snake has any interesting additional unique symbolism that would fit Tom. And, well, there was:
Authority and Leadership
Aggression and Fearlessness
Destruction and Creation
Intelligence and Cunning
Which all in all sounds fitting for Tom Riddle.
I also continued reading and apparently, snakes are associated with lightning by some Native American tribes. And when I saw that I was sold on the idea. Considering how the killing curse is represented by lightning (Harry's scar and the lightning-struck tower being the name of the chapter Dumbledore dies in). It feels appropriate with Tom's connection with snakes.
The King Cobra is actually not really a Cobra and is considered a unique breed of snake, which Tom would approve of. It's also the longest venomous snake and its venom can result in a rapid fatality, as soon as 30 minutes following a bite. It's also a cannibal snake that eats other snakes, including its own kind.
Overall it just fits perfectly, both in traits, symbolism, and how rare and dangerous it is. So, for your question, I think Tom Riddle's Patronus, if he could cast one, would be a King Cobra.

chonny jash/cccc fandom PLEASE rb + share how you got into chonny jash i wanna know!! thru his covers, animation, a recommendation or somethin else?! can be a super long or short explanation, im so curious as to how we all ended up here lol
i'll go first(kinda lengthy so its under a readmore)^-^
I had a whole miracle musical/tally hall phase in the summer of 2022, was obsessed with The Mind Electric, and i made a yt playlist w like 50+ versions. fastforward a year later, in the middle of 2023, i found a crazy 12 minute cover by this weirdo named Chonny Jash(what kinda name was that??) and gave it a try and holy shit my mind was blown, the three songs were easily the best covers i'd ever heard and i fucking loved them so much
at first i was just a fan of those three songs, but slowly thru the end of last year but surely i started listening to his other covers, like Hidden in the Sand, Variations on a Cloud, Ruler of Everything, The Bidding, and The Whole World and You, in that order(they all have a soft spot in my heart cus of it). I realized thru The Bidding that the songs were actually all connected so on the last day of 2023 i gave the whole album a try and fucking loved it, both song and lore-wise and from then on I was a huge fan. i've since listened to a lot more of his music tho not everything yet
it's kinda crazy that I've only been super into it not even for that long, but my journey def started like almost a year ago now lmao. you could say i fell very slowly into a hole i couldn't s

I know it was unexpected for plenty of people but I LOVE the implication that in S3 willow is the one rocking a tough, practical jacket and hunter is the one in the cozy nerd sweater. Especially in the context of how they've always viewed each other?
Willow has always been the "leather jacket-wearing bad-boy with a heart of gold" in hunters eyes when you think about it. She's strong, plays a flashy contact sport that's essentially fantasy-roller derby, stands up to authority and fights for a cause, all the while being sweet and silly and sensitive and secretly insecure but healing from something traumatic that happened to her.
And on the flip side, willow didn't meet Hunter when he was the golden guard, she met him when he was pretending to be a normal kid. He was weird and awkward and overzealous and stand offish. His best friend is a bird and his name is Caleb Jasper Bloodwilliams. BUT as the day goes on he makes friends, acts dorky and encouraging, does something really weird and messed up but (most important to willow) demonstrates that he can mend the mistakes he makes. He's soooo the sheltered "good" girl learning to come out of her shell and willow is the risk taking beefcake who shows him the world. It's disgusting and I love it

Snow White and the Bluebird
Everyone sees Snow and the bluebird, the bird is on like every Hallmark statuette and Disney Princess sticker of Snow White. But I just want to point out that the bird in the movie is SO WELL-DONE.
Tumblr media
I don't mean well-animated. Even though it is. I mean, what the bluebird brings out in the story besides Snow White's kind, loving attitude toward it.
When she first sees the bluebird its when she's about to be stabbed by the Huntsman. The blue bird is lost, and can't find its mother and father, and is crying.
And Snow White responds, "come on. Perk up. Your mama and papa can't be far. Won't you smile for me?"
Tumblr media
What's that ladies and gentlemen? She comforts the bird by saying "the ones who love you can't be far?!" So then there's no reason to despair, even if you're a defenseless, fragile creature lost in a bleak and dangerous world?
Then there's the sound of a whistle--a short little melody--and there they are. The bird's parents. And it can fly to them happily.
Snow White was right. The baby bird's parents were never far; they were looking for their loved chick. So there was never any real reason to give up hope or cry. And this whole scene happens right before she has to flee for her life through the Dark Forest.
Tumblr media
She despairs for a moment too. Everything seems dangerous and cruel in the Dark Forest, and she collapses in fear...but then the animals find her. And she's "ashamed of the fuss she made, all because she was afraid."
Then she says, "what do you do when things go wrong?" And out of all the hand-drawn animals in the clearing, the filmmakers have the bluebird family answer her. They sing the exact same melody that they sang when the parents found the lost baby. "Oh! You sing a song!" And then Snow White sings the same Lost But Found melody, too.
Tumblr media
Why be ashamed of momentary fear? Well, because there was never any real danger. Why believe that things will turn out all right, when the ruler of the whole land and the only person who was ever supposed to take care of you wants you dead? Well, because she knows there's someone else out there who loves her and will find her--The Prince.
Tumblr media
He promised her his heart. He's going to find her to fulfill that promise, no matter what else happens. That's why she can sing and smile and serve others even though to the outside eye it may seem like her life is in shambles. But she has faith that the one who loves her will come deliver her.
That's the point of the movie. That's the point of the bluebirds. Faith trumps fear. Focusing on the good truth rather than the darkness of circumstances is the whole superpower of Snow White's innocent, pure character. She's pure love, and she believes in pure love, and that's what makes her Fairest of All.
"Love is patient, love is kind, is not jealous, does not brag, is not puffed up; it does not act unbecomingly, does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered; it does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; it bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things..." 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

its understandable that people characterize elias as a stereotypical annoying bitch disney villain, but i feel like the canon was trying to do something so much funnier with him. his main personality trait was never being petty or overtly evil. it was being boring and corporate. this is not loki, this is like. the narrator from the stanley parable. ok. this is mr. does budgeting for fun. he is an automatically generated manager who just so happens to be a 200 year old evil false prophet.

Goodbye, My Danish Sweetheart.
Tumblr media
Hey I think the framing of this scene is really fucking cool and I wanna talk about it because I haven't seen anybody do that. yet so. yahooo!! let's get into it
BUT FIRST. Symbolism:
an empty chair can symbolise the absence or memory of someone dear who has passed away. This is very obviously meant to represent Hinako in this scenario
In my interpretation, this scene is Kazui saying goodbye to Hinako and apologising for the circumstances of her death.
The lyrics that play are:
"I’m sure nothing will change and we’ll laugh together and call each other stupid names, so many things I wish i hadn't known, I'm just a coward."
The first part of this verse sounds like he's wishfully thinking about what could've happened after he told her the truth - if anything a bit naively.
Kazui wanted (and still wants) to get the weight of his lies off his chest, but he wasn't ready to face the consequences of that confession, most likely making Hinako's death hit even harder.
Here, he bows to the chair before turning around leaving, a silent goodbye.
~
But what about what's going on in the background of this scene? Well!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As Kazui leaves, these two scenes flash in the background. On the table in the first shot is our good friend the green apple, and Background Kazui picks it up, analyses it, before biting it.
So let's go for another symbolism refresher!!
Green apples can sometimes represent platonic relationships, like friendship, but in Kazui's case this takes the form of a sin - as not loving Hinako romantically is what he's lying about - making it a reference to the Garden of Eden story.
Going from that, biting into an apple can represent feeding into temptation.
My interpretation of this scene is Pre-Marriage Kazui indulging in his 'sin', which in my opinion is the fact he's gay.
Let's go back to that lyric shall we:
"I’m sure nothing will change and we’ll laugh together and call each other stupid names, so many things I wish i hadn't known, I'm just a coward."
So many things you wish you hadn't known huh.. Not knowing you were gay would sure make lying to your wife a whole lot easier wouldn't it?
"What I gave up a long time ago, why is it questioning me now? So many things that I should now have known, I'm just a coward"
Woohoo evidence for Background Kazui being Pre-Marriage Kazui!!!
I think this scene is the last time Kazui let himself be free before marrying Hinako. This could possibly have been when he noticed she had a crush on him at their work.
He's indulging one last time. Embracing his sin instead of hiding it away one. last. time. before giving it up for good, almost like a. goodbye.
~
So. I think this scene is framed this way in order to show the parallel of Kazui giving up his sin, and Kazui mourning Hinako's death.
As established, they both have a "goodbye, I'm sorry things turned out this way" atmosphere to them. Kazui is apologetic, in a way, that he has to give up on being his true self and he is apologetic of his lies murdering Hinako, so Milgram conveys this by showing the two scenes posed the same way in front of one another.
This framing also gives the scene a Beginning Vs End feeling that I think is really cool, and the use of Dark Vs Light colours only heightens that! (Though that's slightly off topic rip)
Conclusion? I love this scene it's awesome and amazing and super cool

hi! ive listened to some of chonny jash's songs but did not realize that there was really a story? Or i vaguely knew but didn't have the time/energy to get into it and with the release of the bidding animation ive realized theres like a bajillion awesome animations and art and i want to get into cccc but have no clue how. also why does soul have a trident.
OH man!
The story of CCCC has an overall seeming narrative, but much of it's smaller points are interpretive due to Jash himself leaving it up to fans of the album. But! Overall it kind of goes like:
-Jash or, what most people call Whole, splits as due to mental dissonance and waning mental health. (Time Machine Reprise).
- Whole fades into Soul (End of TMR into Dream) and from there its Mucka Blucka as a sort of introductory song. The recap for a story you have or haven't heard yet.
- (The entire album is a time loop! Which is a big metaphor for the cycles of mental health and illness people go through.)
- From there its the section called "Cacophony" which starts off with Soul, but eventually it turns to Heart and Mind + their fighting and inability to see or listen to one another or their points of view. Of course, as Logic and Emotion, they both have valid ideas or opinions, but believe themselves so contradictory that the other must be evil or out to get them.
- Heart attempts to shoot Mind, as referred to in Ruler of Everything. Literal or Metaphorical as you take this, it is seemingly symbolic for an attempt at one's own life if not self sabotage. If not then both.
- The rest up until Soul Eclectic is sort of just the Mind and Heart fighting and their own personal views each on the situation.
- Soul in The Soul Eclectic reaches his breaking point. Threatening to kill them all (A more direct attempt at suicide)
- Mind and Heart in the subsequent songs decide to get their shit together.
- (Two Wuv) Soul realizes that not only can they be happier now but that trying to force themselves to conform to society's ideas of mental health or belief or love is just plainly unbeneficial. Sort of a song about unapologetically being yourself.
- Welcome To Tally Hall is a tribute to Tally Hall themselves more than anything.
- This transfers into Concord soon after! Concord is Whole or Jash by himself, though many of the songs seem to carry themes from Cacophony in them. Self sabotage, disagreement, importance placed on the wrong thing, the idea that no one person is better off than another. It concludes with Taken for a Ride. Which is also sort of CJ's epic "im burnt out as hell" song towards the end. But exaggerated to my knowledge for lyrical shenanigans.
That is CCCC as neutrally told as best as possible. I highly recommend forming your own ideas on it, but I'd be happy to also discuss more in depth my opinion on each song should you or anyone else express interest!
Getting into the Trident: The fandom took the metaphor of "Tridential Sovreignty" and "This trident he formed (found? Lyrics.) is both weapon and motive" and said "Soul's got a trident" to which Jash responded with "Absolutely yes he does now" Same with the crown most people put Mind in, and that is referenced in the "Trident, Crown and Blindfold" line.
Soul really did get noose imagery, a trident and a mask. All Heart n Mind got were a blindfold and crown. Lmao
Though Heart is also commonly drawn with wings. Which is semi-canonical according to album covers. I choose to ignore them because I don't particularly have an attachment to the idea!
Getting into the fandom itself, I can recommend looking around for the Chonny Jash Fan Server (CJFS) Discord link. But it can be extremely intimidating and even I just stick to discussion and one other thread channel. (Sides from my au channels which pop up every once a month or so).
Important note is that only Tally Hall covers have to do with HMS. Any of Jash's other music (of which I highly recommend, always) is unrelated. There is also a fan QnA somewhere that was done like a year ago now which has some neat answers in it.
I, again, am happy to go into my interpretations of HMS and the music as a whole but skdmsm saved you the reading hopefully should that be undesired!

I loved this moment when she realised sometimes all you have is yourself - SHE'S the key to solving this problem. It reminded me of Emotion, when she realised Felix himself was the key to fixing the damage he'd done.
And when she says the magic powers aren't what changed her, she just changed her way of looking at the world...that was such a strong moment for her.

I hate reading the eah fandom wiki tbh. some takes/interprets on there are awful & something blatantly untrue like 😭 anyway I was looking at raven's main page & came across this little gem
Tumblr media
"the only one" what??? I love Raven but since when was she the only one undertaking actions that directly oppose her destiny.
Hunter is vegetarian & spent his entire summer before legacy year sabotaging his dad's traps (and is, you know, dating Ashlynn). Darling is... well, Darling and is breaking every damsel in distress rule in the book. There's Ashlynn, who doesn't really care for her happily ever after and is dating Hunter against her destiny. And those are people who are conscious of the fact they're going against destiny, and are choosing to be themselves anyway. On the other hand, you have someone like Faybelle who loves cheerhexing, something that doesn't exactly scream Dark Fairy but she still actively wants her destiny.
What makes Raven different isn't that she does things that contradict her destiny but that she doubts the system itself. For someone like Hunter or Darling, fully abandoning their destiny isn't really an viable option since it doesn't occur to them Grimm isn't telling the truth. For Raven, is does.
She's in a unique position where she's one of the very few to know the Evil Queen isn't dead, which is what Grimm says happened to the general public, but rather trapped in the mirror prison. She knows Grimm has lied and isn't always truthful, the possibility that he's done so more than once isn't impossible. This doubt (and general dislike of her destiny) leads her to something more powerful; hope. Raven is again one of the few people who know about Bella Sister's unsigned page. Even though Grimm does everything in his power to squash her hope, it survives in a gnat, an inconsistency and what Giles tells her (through translated riddlish)
She's operating on more information that her classmates are and because of that is aware of that other possibility. She doesn't have any real proof or certainty about what will happen, but it's enough for her. She's willing to take that leap of faith, for that chance to be herself without compromise. That's why she doesn't sign.

Utena – Parallels and beyond them
As the series progress, we see that not only Utena’s and Anthy’s respective journeys share similarities, but with the former going through beyond the limits of Dios, she had helped the latter overcome the ones imposed by End of the World.
Tumblr media
Once upon a time, years and years ago, there was a little princess, and she was very sad for her mother and father had died.”
“[Anthy] sacrificed herself to save her beloved prince even though she was the only one who truly loved him. And yet, the prince she loves is no longer the prince she knew. Not anymore… He is now End of the World…”
Both are little girls who had experienced a tragedy. The aftermath is glossed over with a fairytale-like narrative and the truth is so much alarmingly darker. Utena was not only grieving, but also losing the will to live and Anthy protected her brother from the expectations of entitled people (and said brother would later become one of them) at the cost of her personhood. Based on the imagery of coffins associated with them, I say both were at that point (symbolically/mentally) stuck between life and death.
Tumblr media
Before the princess appeared a traveling prince riding upon a white horse.
“By all means, stay in this cozy coffin of yours and continue to play prince.”
Fairytales present the prince as the perfect man embodying everything a woman supposedly needs to be happy, but as the saying goes, nobody is perfect. Therefore, princes do not exist and will remain a fantasy. While dreaming/fantasizing is not bad, that must not blind us to reality or else we will not see that the Prince Charming riding his white steed is only a patronizing and entitled man-child playing prince on the horse of a carrousel. Utena came to Anthy by taking the most perilous path and with nothing but her determination and her love for Anthy instead of walking on the easy path or by riding a steed to make her journey less arduous.
Tumblr media
He had a regal bearing and a kind smile.
“Himemiya…at last, we meet…”
The first time Dios appeared before Utena, he had light above him like a halo, giving the viewer(s) the impression of a heavenly entity here to save her which is reinforced with the fact it happened in a church. However, unlike in the fairytale prologue, he didn’t give Utena a kind smile; he only asked her what she was doing in her current position before turning his back to her and leaving. Maybe he knew she would follow him to where Anthy was, but he didn’t appear princely in doing so. Except, that’s the point, isn’t it? In the movie, the prince was the Devil turned into one by Anthy’s power. Dios was actually Akio’s persona. As a prince, Dios MUST have a regal bearing and a kind smile, and MUST present himself like that to EVERY girl in the world (like a Japanese idol). The Prince Charming is not real and no one can reach his level of perfection. By not acknowledging that fact, people’s expectations put immense pressure on boys and they grow to believe that they cannot show their imperfect selves to the world or if they give up, the bitterness of their failure turns them into Akio, men who compensate their inadequacy with superficially cool stuff (cars, stylish clothes) and by oppressing others. However, in doing so, they ruin their chances to form genuine connections with others which explains Dios’s inability to be close to any girl he had saved to the point of not remembering any of their names. The only one whose name he knew was Anthy and she was the only one who saw his true imperfect self. When Utena appeared before Anthy, she came with a light projected from above her too, but it did not give the impression of a higher power like how Dios’s did. Hers was smaller, but it still carried a feeling of hope and liberation. In addition, unlike Dios, Utena didn’t appear regal at all: her dueling uniform was in tatter, her fingers were bloodied and her face was red and sweaty from crying and exhaustion. However, her smile was kind and meant for ONLY Anthy. Utena did not care about how she looked like as long as Anthy got the help she needed and knew how much she loved her.
Tumblr media
The prince wrapped the princess in a rose-scented embrace and gently wiped the tears from her eyes.
“Himemiya, give me your hand!”
A kiss from a prince seems to be romantic, but with the true context of Utena’s past, it appears less so. Utena’s tears hadn’t been from mourning for her parents, but from expressing compassion for Anthy who had to suffer for eternity. Faced with her tearfully begging to help Anthy, the Prince just wiped her tears and thanked her for her concern. In the end, he didn’t take away the cause of them and only gave her cold comfort. Tears are seen as a sign of weakness, but also of how humane one can be. After all, Utena’s tears are what reached the Anthy lying in her coffin. If Dios won’t give Anthy a hand, then Utena will do it (and literally at that)!
Tumblr media
“Little one,” he said, “who bears up alone in such deep sorrow, never lose that strength or nobility even when you grow up.”
“No! Get out of here! The swords…!”
If we remember how Anthy got the title of witch, you’d see that it was because she had protected the one she cared most even if it meant braving the anger of the entire world; and she’d rather continue her eternal suffering than let Utena become another target of the swords as well. It shows that she possesses as much strength and nobility as Utena (only buried under layers and layers of trauma and bitterness). Both had carried a “deep sorrow” and had been thrown at so many hardships, but that is part of growing up and they had succeeded in overcoming them.
Tumblr media
“We will meet again. This ring will lead you to me one day.”  Perhaps the ring the prince gave her was an engagement ring.
“[…] I have to go now. [Utena] isn’t gone at all. She merely vanished from your world.”
Dios and Anthy are sure that a reunion will happen. What makes it interesting is the how. In old time, men gave engagement rings to women not as a romantic gesture, but as an indication that she was now PROPERTY of her fiancé (and isn’t it interesting that we can say the same for the other Duelists, especially the male ones?). As long as Utena wears that ring, she is his to do whatever he wanted. In other words, he had ensured that she would meet him again by physically bounding her to him. Meanwhile, Anthy had nothing but her belief in meeting Utena again, but like Dios said, she needed “a prince she can believe in” only the prince part was unnecessary. Anthy’s position in the first place had been because the prince role was killing her brother. One was dying of exhaustion and the other was the target of everyone’s hatred, both caused by an unjust oppressive system. When both sides are suffering from the latter, then shouldn’t the solution be to change it for something better? So Anthy didn’t need a prince, but someone who can inspire her to believe in the existence of a world beyond her coffin and to walk out of it.
(Do you notice that while the first promise of reunion was made by putting a ring, (a chain) on Utena, Anthy made hers by removing her glasses which symbolized the chain that bound her to Akio?)
Tumblr media
[S]o impressed was she by him, the princess vowed to become a prince herself one day.
“I’ll become her prince and save her! […] I swear!”
“This time it’s my turn to go. No matter where you are, I swear I’ll find you. Wait for me, Utena.”
And finally, the mark left by that one meeting. Utena wanted to become a prince because Dios supposedly left an impression on her, but thanks to the MOST BEAUTIFUL plot twist in anime history, we find out that her reason was actually to save Anthy from her eternal torment. Dios did not give back her will to live; she chose of her own volition to leave her coffin in order to help a girl who was eternally suffering in hers. Of course she didn’t remember everything correctly years later and modeled herself after the princely ideal she thought Dios represented, but her subconscious, through the ring, reminded her of the promise she had made to Anthy. Utena turned the ring that symbolizes the patriarchal objectification of women into a mark of female solidarity. Without realizing it, she did more than becoming Anthy’s prince: she became her friend, her support system. And Anthy gradually allowed Utena to occupy a place in her heart. That fondness grew into love and that inspired her to leave Akio and his abusive ass. She also didn’t change her appearance to be like Utena (which had been based after the princely ideal so that would have been a vicious cycle).
They helped each other leave their respective coffins. Anthy may not know everything like Utena in the beginning, but as she progresses in her quest to find her beloved, she will discover the flawed, yet authentic world beyond the fabricated one of Akio/patriarchy.
Tumblr media
(And fairytale!Utena is just watching Dios riding into the horizon while Anthy is walking forward to reunite with Utena.)

Shrek 2, while a cinematic masterpiece, is also an interesting look at queerness and comp het.
Fiona is married so it's time to reunite with her parents. But instead of marrying a prince, she's married to an ogre. Not just that, but she's also an ogre. (Yes everyone knew she would sometimes be an ogre but that was when she was a child, she didn't know she would be an ogre for the rest of her life, and besides once she met the right prince she would stop being an ogre. She was supposed to stop being an ogre.)
But okay they're both ogres. We can still ask about when they'll have children because even if they're ogres they can still have kids, right? That's what married princes and princesses do so naturally that's what everyone does. Even if ogres might not be great parents (I've heard that ogres eat their young, is that something you people do?) it's still something that should be discussed.
And okay you can stay in Fiona's childhood bedroom filled with all the reminders that hey, everyone thought she was just a princess and princesses marry princes. Her toys left out from the last time she played with them. The prince slays the ogre. The princess offers a token of gratitude for slaying the ogre. Fiona wrote Mrs. Fiona Charming a million times in her diary because what else was she supposed to grow up to be?
And Harold you have to fix this, your country can't be ruled by ogres. You were unfit to rule when you were a frog but I changed you, I made you better, I made you a prince. You know how this works. Think of your daughter's safety.
Shrek goes to the Fairy Godmother and oh honey, ogres don't live happily ever after. It's just not done. It hasn't happened in all of fairy tale history. You have to change the both of you to be happy. You have to present as a prince and a princess. It will be better. You'll fit in better that way. You'll be accepted that way.

HMS: Needs and Wants
Now, I’ve been trying to figure out what exactly HMS are to whole. Sure, they’re the emotions, logic, and aspirations, but how do they work?
I figured something out, so if you’re having a similar problem (or just like seeing hms being metaphorically dissected), you can keep reading.
(Also, if anything doesn’t make sense or if someone has a comment to add on this, reblog! I love to brainstorm and theorize with others :] )
Let’s dum them down to their basic concepts. Feelings, reason, and ambition.
Heart, as the feelings, decides based on feelings. He feels hungry. He feels tired. He feels sad. He feels empty. He tells you what the problem is.
Mind, as the reason, decides based on reason. He should eat. He should sleep. He should cry. He should get help. He tells you how to help him, or better yet avoid the problem.
Together, Mind and Heart create Whole’s needs. He feels hungry so he should eat. He feels tired so he should sleep. He feels sad so he should cry. He feels empty so he should get help.
Now that just covers the basics, what’s required to survive. What makes one sentient?
Soul, as the ambition, decides based on ambition. He wants to eat cereal. He wants to stay up. He wants to make music. He wants to deal with it on his own.
Soul is Whole’s want. His driving force. He feels hungry so he should eat; but he wants cereal. He feels tired so he should sleep; but he wants to stay up. He feels sad so he should cry; but he wants to make music. He feels empty so he should get help; but he wants to deal with it on his own.
Now whether or not his wants are telling him to be healthy or not doesn’t matter. What does matter is what Soul wants and therefore what Whole wants. Soul, as ambition, can push past feelings and reason and do what he wants. Sure, he typically acts based on what’s being felt or what’s most logical, but it’s not required.
Yet, this shouldn’t make sense. Heart says what Whole needs, Mind says how to get that need. That should be how it works.
And yet is ISNT.
Have there been times where you wanted to do something, knowing full well it’d impact your health? Your body and brain are screaming at you to sleep, and yet you keep your eyes glued to the screen?
That’s a want.
That would be Soul.
Soul has the most control over Whole, and there’s nothing anyone can do about it.
But what if you want this control?
To… let’s say get one over on your nemesis? Become the true sovereign?
Well, that can’t happen. Of course it can’t.
Wants will never equal Needs, no matter how hard Heart and Mind claim to have Soul as their own. Especially when one claims they’re better than the other.
Soul recognizes this too. He even says in TSE “You must be so arrogant to / think that either of you can / control the Soul so wholly”, “Here in my kingdom, I am your lord”. Sure, he’s going a bit off the rails, but the message is still there: {You can’t control me. Neither of you.}
It’s why Soul has his power: he is Whole’s wants. Heart and Mind are Whole’s needs. Wants > Needs
Switching gears here: Now how does Heart and Mind’s fighting make sense? Or lack thereof?
Well, the reason why they hate each other is more about the characters and less about what they are: They both believe they are more important than the other. (How can you be healthy when you don’t know what’s wrong?) [How can you heal when you don’t know how to?]
The reason it doesn’t make sense ties into what they are though, the problem and the answer.
Heart is the problem finder. He finds the problem. He notices what’s wrong and wants it fixed. Problem is, he doesn’t know how.
Mind is the answer finder. He can find the solution. He can fix what is wrong. Problem is, he needs to know what’s wrong, and he doesn’t know what is.
They need each other to be efficient, and that’s what they realize in the end. After many, many arguments and fights, that is.
idk how to end this properly so insert jazzy ending here
