General Kirigan x princess!reader (one shot)
Word count: 3.4k
Warnings: Period drama misogyny, arranged marriages, arguments, angst, I’ll proofread in the morning pls sorry
Summary: The general and his wife of differentiating moral grounds make their marriage work somehow
An: This one was sitting in my drafts unfinished for so long and it was an alternate ending for another Aleksander fic which I never ended up posting but I worked on this one bc s2 darkling arose a LOT in me so oh well
This one is spoiler free for S2 :)
There were two sets of council meetings ever since the General had married the lady y/l/n. For one her name weighed a lot of political power, being the noble lord’s daughter, the princess it was a prestige to have that power at little palace, someone of that huge a name by the general’s side. Well the General himself never cared for the affection of it all, he was too smart the man to see past any political benefit. Y/n, in the peak of her youth had dreams and hopes for her marriage which her soon crushed one after another with every bit of unfolding of her relationship with Aleksander, coming to realise she hadn’t married an affectionate man, not even caring but someone just so powerhungry and cold he doesn’t think twice to bend his morals. Is what y/n thought of him coming to know so more and more of him but remained not so phased after a while, a year into the marriage she would just look back thinking how foolish she it was to expect anything of the man she married.
Yet she thought it worked just fine, if she truly meant to marry for love she might’ve had a summer fling, elope with some stable boy and call it love to be living in some cottage far away…but no, she was destined for duties more than that. She had her own first army council at the little palace, the king’s army. But the king never bothered attend. The Lady Kirigan, the princess, was considered capable with the set of officers she had for most decisions.
Your husband doesn’t share a bed with you but at least you’re the head of first army council meetings. Your husband rarely shares any intimate moments with you but at least you get to see him from camp base to camp base. And of course the most infamous facade of being the pair that does share affection for each other in the glamour dinner parties amongst drunk lords and ladies who believe it just fine.
Honestly on the political front the first army felt more liberated and open with less of the general’s inputs given he wouldn’t join their meetings anymore ever since Lady y/n was placed there neither were the first army officials…mortals rather, allowed in any second army business. “Leave, the room.” Too much for uninterrupted business, the general barged into the meeting room where Lady y/n’s first army officials were having an ongoing discussion given the maps and the reports laid out on the table. “I have some important matters I need to discuss with my lady wife.” He announced as the matters seemed to be quite the work regarding, given he had a letter or document scroll in his hands and it was the general himself who visited.
With a short nod from y/n the officers left the room leaving the two alone, y/n did feel a tad affront on him just barging in through her ongoing meeting well aware he wouldn’t have entertained it if it was the other way around but she wished for whatever matter it was to get done with sooner so she chose not to speak on it “What is it?”
Aleksander placed the letter in his hand on the table for her to read, as she picked it up he spoke “Its a letter to Lord Eldon, a dear friend of your father’s who’s not so particularly fond of me, we need his aid for more men by the Ravaka front since the second army is occupied by the fold but he wouldn’t comply if the letter went from me” Aleksander let out a short scoff on the fact that some lord of a land that covers barely about 5 villages would be distasteful to him, the general, the shadow summoner. But in his opinion these noble lords were so petty about their allies and Aleksander knew he wasn’t that friendly “I need you to sign that letter.”
Y/n had her eyes fixated on the letter reading through till the end, the letter written in a first person way with wordings seeming as if she did write it herself “Did you write this?” She asked looking up from the letter.
“No.” Aleksander replied flatly, surely the general wouldn’t be as free as to go about writing framed letters himself.
“Well next time you feel like writing a letter on by behalf know that I wouldn’t be this straight forward to a dear friend of my father’s who has know me my entire life…” her voice trailed off with a suppressed chuckle that Aleksander didn’t even seem to check the phrasings of the letter once.
“Alright then you write it yourself” He spoke sliding a blank paper across the table to her “Make it as authentic as you’d like.”
“I could write it but I am not going to sign it.” Y/n spoke with sincerity but she was calm to lay it out. “I don’t condone it.”
“I beg your pardon?” Aleksander said raising a brow quite phased that she would choose a decision revolting his.
“If I sign the letter Lord Eldon will surely send his soldiers given he is to watch over a larger estate with his handful of army it would be unwise so no…”
“That is exactly why I want you to sign it. If the letter is from you he will send his men-did-did you not hear me correctly the first time?” He asked budding quite misinterpreting what she meant to say as whole.
“I heard you just right and I am saying no.” Y/n still had a calm yet firm tone of her voice despite his obvious annoyance “Lord Eldon isn’t a sovereign lord his army is the third half of the Royal army…for him to send his soldiers, the domesticity of the people of his land would be compromised. I am not going to sign the letter and bind him with a moral obligation.”
“The domesticity of the people?” He repeated her words with a taunting amusement “You are crossing unnecessary lengths to spite me…just sign it.” Aleksander sighed not considering her genuine people caring intentions behind it.
“Oh I surely do have other things than to be free enough to spite you, General.” Y/n said crossing her arms to a firm stance “Should Lord Eldon send his men for you the crime, the looting, the disruption will increase in his lands with less men on patrol, when he doesn’t even have enough as it is. I am sorry but I cannot sign it.”
“Don’t you understand? This is important. We need those men and it requires just a mere signature of yours!” He exclaimed, very agitated as he let out an exaggerated sigh rubbing his eyes to get over the unwanted annoyance.
“It’s as if I am talking to a wall…you aren’t even trying to understand.” Y/n spoke shaking her head, Aleksander truly believed that y/n’s barrier for the sign was not the honour and morals she abided by but…pettiness. “If you need the soldiers so bad then write the letter yourself. Sign it and send it as yourself the general because frankly ‘we’ don’t need his men…the second army does, you do.”
“Y/n you don’t get to—“
“Lady y/l/n.” She corrected him mid sentence shrugging her shoulders, he wasn’t on first name terms with his own wife even the marriage was quite formal and political, should he believe that he had the authority over her to by using her first name in disdain she’d rather prove him wrong.
“Y/l/n.” He corrected his words with gritted teeth “Sign it. Be done with it.” Aleksander was running out of patience to convince or put forward any debate whilst she remained calm as ever as if he stance his words had no effect on her.
Y/n exhaled and she took the paper in her hands walking across the table to him, she looked at the letter one time as though she were considering signing it right before she tore it apart in his face and let the pieces of paper fall to the floor “I won’t.”
Aleksander huffed, he stood as if that action did not phase him, something he expected at the start of their conversation “It is almost humorous and immature to see how low you are willing to steep just to get a rise out of me.”
All of this over a sign…y/n said in her head yet she knew this conversation would only go further and further to no end. Aleksander was so head strong out of all she tried to explain it why she wouldn’t sign the letter he stood the same ground, “Ah yes of course my favourite hobby!” She said sarcastically rolling her eyes as she attempted to walk past him.
Aleksander stopped y/n in her tracks holding her by her upper arm, taken aback by this sudden action she tried to maintain her distance yet he gave her a firm tug towards him to sound more sincere “You might think you are so much above me with your moral grounds and your honour, silver spoon fed princess y/n, but you stand here, at the little palace, taking your council meetings as the general’s wife…and that’s what bothers you so much doesn’t it?” He sneered “It hurts your petty conscience…however you put it y/n you are not much different than me—you married me.”
“You know Aleksander, I did not have a say in this. It was announced I was to be married to the general…you. Before our wedding I didn’t even know what you looked like, my beliefs had nothing to do with our marriage my father simply married me off to a stranger on the king’s orders. You are just too arrogant to be around.” so much for the spoiled princess. Y/n replied bluntly as she looked at him and he seemed lost at words letting go of his grip on her arm. He instantly regretted his phrasing aware that must’ve stung her, he was not one to apologise but before he could even show his slight remorse for the words he chose she was already walking out her office, leaving him alone…a frequent sight for him. Sight he didn’t want to admit to but hated being used to, her walking away.
A distasteful marriage had both Aleksander and Y/n bound to societal presence of being a rather joyous couple, hand in hand and smiling at the guests of the gala. One of the king’s many monthly amusements. Gather Royal gossiping and as Aleksander put it, arse kissing guests time to time for fine dining despite of what goes on within the country. Y/n was raised amongst these dinner parties of fake smiles and niceties, just assuming her smiles wouldn’t be as fake around her own husband was something she hadn’t planned. But there they were, the general and his wife, y/n graciously laughing at his comments as they talked to the Royal guests, arm in arm as if it wasn’t mere hours ago that two of them had an argument over council matters. “Ah Y/n!” One of the ladies from the Royal guests called her as she approached her and Aleksander. “General” the lady nodded respectfully. “You look lovely tonight princess-or should I say lady general now?” The lady commented as she let out a cheerful laugh.
“You wound me by addressing me with titles when you’re quite literally my favourite!” Y/n exclaimed with a courteous smile, “You are on first name basis hmm? Don’t insult our bond with titles!” Truthfully y/n didn’t even remember the name of the Lady who so cheerfully greeted her and Aleksander, she remembered her face from a few of royal dinners and galas from earlier and that was about enough for a small talk. However the ‘first name basis’ was a taunt to Aleksander which he must’ve registered the way his lips fell into a thin smile to seem as if he wasn’t phased.
“They say marriage changes people quite a lot but you two just as gallant as your wedding day!” The lady exclaimed.
“Why thank you that is very polite.” Aleksander spoke with a short nod, he was never the one to get so much involved in any of the small talks it seemed his wife was quite the master with remembering a lot of details about almost every royal guest she did most the talking for him while he’d stand there with small courtesies.
“Surely! And for a marriage to change you it requires quite a lot of the couple to be so present don’t you agree?” Y/n said to the lady in such a subtle manner though her words weighed heavy sly comments directed to Aleksander.
“Oh you are so right! As workaholic as the general is I imagine it is difficult to get his time.” The lady joked unaware of the original scenario of their marriage being worse than that. Y/n didn’t get his time, his thoughts or attention outside of these dinner parties anyways. She never took it up with Aleksander of course, it was bound to be met with disdain. Yet it didn’t stomach her well how getting Aleksander’s time out of his ‘workaholic’ schedule seemed something difficult to the lady and not y/n’s time. She was on the first army council herself and worked just as much…nothing new.
“Happens so often…” y/n’s voice trailed off as she chuckled at what seemed to be a light hearted mention of her husband’s businesses to the lady, “you’d be surprised” y/n added softly for Aleksander to hear. And he did, he’d been hearing these comments and taunts quite a few times in the course of that entire evening.
He thought maybe it had something to do with the correlation of their argument earlier, wether it was or wasn’t his patience wore so thin. After the dinner of snide remarks it almost seemed endless to Aleksander. Once it was over he walked back to y/n’s chambers with her, they left these events together so it would seem that they had the same bedchamber. However when y/n got inside hers thinking Aleksander would walk further down the hall to his, he walked inside the room with her. Y/n simply turned around when he entered alongside her before she could begin to ask the reason for it he shut the door behind him and stood afar exhaling “What was all that about?” He spoke and it seemed so demanding.
“What?” She asked truly clueless, she didn’t think those comments would actually get to him, most of those she most probably forgot even making.
“You kept on taunting me the entire evening!” He said crossing his arms trying his best to maintain his composure yet his body language was so angry and frustrated.
“Oh did I now?” Y/n asked tilting her head trying to go though some of the conversations in her head where he must’ve felt that she had done that, maybe.
“Y/n it-“
“Uh?” Y/n interrupted him mid sentence as he used her first name.
Aleksander spoke further regardless “It was disrespectful to me.”
“Are you going to have another one of your tantrums again? I did not have enough wine for this…” y/n sighed with her subtle composure and if only irritated Aleksander more and more. However much he tried to result her misconduct to her she seemed to be treating it so trivially.
“I am serious.” He said flatly and brisk of frustration lingered his tone.
“So am I. I truly did not drink enough to go through this again” Y/n said raising her brows at him, she gathered that if she reacted and engaged with him seriously, it wasn’t as if he was going to listen secondly he was awaiting for her to react the way he wanted her to so he could tell her how much of an inconvenience to she was to him. To his plans.
“You can’t just ignore me with sarcasm!” Aleksander exclaimed and he felt as though he would loose his temper so he exhaled taking in a breath for that situation to not arise, he wanted to prove his point across and it wouldn’t happen if he acted rather harshly or she wouldn’t be open to listen to him “I am your husband-why don’t I get to call you by your name?”
“Why? Lady y/l/n, lady general, lady wife doesn’t suffice?” She replied leaning on the table in the large bed chambers where he still stood by the doors.
“I address you with titles when you are surrounded and in meetings out of respect but amongst the two of us—“
“There is no amongst the two of us!” Y/n said this time as the subtlety of her tone leaving her. It was beyond her understanding how he his thought process counted her the harbinger of their unpleasant marriage. She threw her hands in the air pointing this to him “This might just be one of the few times where we’re ‘amongst the two of us’ behind closed doors and we are arguing! That’s the most you see for us.”
“Why are you so strongly opinionated towards me? I have never wronged you in any way!” He said exclaiming as he walked a few steps towards her both of their tones so above decency as their conversation got heated.
“Me? I am strongly opinionated? My husband doesn’t even share the same bed as me and you are saying that? Under different circumstances you wouldn’t have married me I’m not your like am I? I am not grisha—had it not been for your political status you wouldn’t even have this conversation. Me! It’s me-I am the one who has never wronged you yet I despise you that much.” Y/n spoke as her voice cracked by the end of it, she had went through this in her head a lot. Everything she could be doing right for him to stop being as cold to her until he drove her to stop believing in them.
Aleksander took a long pause before he spoke, he had never realised that this is what she’d been feeling due to him but it wasn’t is intention. “You…you don’t despise me.” He spoke looking away from him almost as if he couldn’t meet her gaze.
“Alright…sure! You can say anything you want to have the last word of this argument but it does not change the truth!” She spoke frustrated just then Aleksander leaped towards her grabbing the sides of her arms and pinned her to the wall, y/n just started at him blankly just registering how fast that had happened.
“You want to know the truth y/n? The truth is I am exhausted to see you disregard my love for you over and over because you do not fathom it. I have always hated those galas and dinner parties yet you make me await them so I could get to be close to you, if only for the mask of being a happy couple but I so miserably await being close to you. It is difficult to even work around you knowing out of everything I could want of the whole world I want you, your love and it is the one thing I can’t have—you don’t deserve my infuriating love, the darkness of it and had I not pushed you away you would’ve loved me like someone entitled to. I don’t want that entitled, dutiful love…I want it yours. Wholly yours. But it is getting difficult to push you away..” he finished as the two of them gazed into each other’s eyes for quite the long moment. This was the most close they had been and neither seemed to move.
“Aleksander…” finally y/n said softly as her gaze softened towards him. Comprehending everything he just said. His expressions were truly taken aback when she said his name, for someone wanting to be that long buried part of himself, “Kiss me.” She looked at him unfaltering, as he pulled her into him from the waist letting go of her arms and crashed his lips onto hers. Such strong desire of a pushed away love, heavy, unfathomable, messy love. Y/n wrapped her arms around him as the two of them kissed their wearies away.

Reflection, part 1
So basically I was reading a lot of stuff here with Kaz and got so obsessed I just couldn't stay away. English isn't my first language but I'll try my best to create some readable story. I don't own the characters or the idea itself, it's quite basic but I hope some of you will like it just as I do.
Fandom: Six of crows
Warnings: Kaz Brekker and everything that goes with him
Pairing: Kaz Brekker x Shadow Summoner!OC
Summary: Darkling's daughter comes to Ketterdam to hide and get help from Nina, an old friend of her, but instead gets herself a new family that will protect her much better than her real one. The similar touch aversion will bring Jess and Kaz closer together than they could imagine.
Part 2, Part 3, Part 4
Tumblr media
For the rest of her life Baghra will be convinced she did the right thing. She may have made many mistakes in her long life but helping her granddaughter Jess was not one of them.
She had grown attached to the girl from the moment she first saw her in the cradle, and she naively thought it would be a good reason for her son to turn his life around. To focus on the family, to get to that rare part of something good that was still left in him as she hoped. And for some period of time it worked. Aleksander paid a lot of attention to his daughter, made time to be with her in spite of his former struggles with the Second Army. Baghra felt his joy and saw it in his black eyes and hoped that Jess would become her support.
She wasn't the only one counting on that, however, and it became abundantly clear when Aleksander began to do individual training with Jess. His thoughts of superior power, his ideas about limitless control were penetrating more and more into his daughter's young mind, and that was why Baghra tried to take control of her, using as an excuse that General Kirigan had to focus on another rebellion.
His departure from the Little Palace was a breath of fresh air, and Baghra put all her energies into helping Jess develop her abilities faster. Her trainings became more intense and started to vary, because Baghra preferred to think that Grishas should not rely solely on their unique abilities. Guns intimidated her with their noise, but Jess developed a special love with knives. A swift throw could be completely silent and it reminded her of the her own shadows that danced so easily and so silently on her fingertips with no effort at all.
— You control the darkness. Not the other way around, remember that, — her father used to say and Jess had believed him so unconditionally that neither of them had ever thought of betraying him in the future.
His lessons had been extremely harsh, and as she grew older, they had increasingly ended in bruises and open wounds, easily vanished by healers only to have Darkling drag her back to the empty West side of the palace the next day and force her to unleash the darkness against his own. Jess was always amazed at how different he could be - attentive and caring one moment and utterly ruthless and indifferent the next. She preferred to separate the two and think of Aleksander as her father and of the Darkling as a teacher, a general, someone who was so obsessed with power that deep down she was horrified at the thought that he could destroy the whole world without blinking an eye just to get what he wanted.
And Baghra confirmed her fears when she told her the truth. About the Black Heretic who created the Fold and faked his death many times just to stay in power. Alina's flee from the Little Palace was the right trigger, and the events in the Fold had proved that the Darkling was blind and deaf to any mercy, that he had no compassion or conscience. Rumors of his tragic death reached everyone, but Baghra suspected that Fold's creator would be able to find a way to deal with its darkness from within and that is why she made Jess run as far away as possible.
After all it was obvious to both of them what would happen if the Darkling was still alive. He would return even more fierce and ruthless than before and he certainly would seek help from his daughter he had raised in his own image. He would use her as an amplifier for himself or force her to serve for his own vengeance. So Baghra, who learned the news from Alina through a secret letter, sent her granddaughter straight to Ketterdam. There, among the countless thieves and murderers, no one would pay attention to the girl hiding her past. Moreover, Baghra had heard rumors that Nina Zenik had settled in Ketterdam and she hoped that Jess, reunited with an old friend, would get the help and support she needed in a foreign land.
If she had known how this would turn out, she would have preferred to leave her granddaughter by her side among the guards of the Little Palace, but doubts had to be killed and she directed all of her prayers that Jess would be able to continue to save the mystery of who her father was and what her abilities were.
"In the darkness and from the darkness," as she used to say.

⁀➴ dark paradise
⌞ general kirigan x fem! healer reader ⌝
summary : The reader has been instructed by the king to help tend to general Kirigan's wounds after his long battle from Fjerda. With such close proximity might something ignite? perhaps the beginning of a flame. word count : 2.4k a/n : Hello! this is my first ever oneshot on tumblr, i do realize this is quite short. Do let me know if you like it or if there's any thing else you'd like to see written! This fic was definitely inspired by the song 'dark paradise' by lana del ray. It means the absolute world to me that you're reading this <3
Tumblr media
" there's no remedy for memory , your face is like a melody " 𓍢ִ໋🌷͙֒ “May I go in?”- you ask patiently waiting outside the general’s chambers. After the long battle with the Fjerdans, you were specifically instructed by the king to aid the general upon his return. Being a healer wasn’t necessarily the best but you couldn’t help but feel your heart flutter in your chest at the prospect of being so close to the general.
One of the guards standing outside the general’s door nods in acknowledgement of your presence, and then moves out of the way so you can step inside the general's chambers. The general was not warned that you were coming, so he looks up curiously with his dark eyes fixated on you with a piercing stare.
“I’m here to help”- you start nervously
General Kirigan leans back and crosses his arms. He seems less brooding than he was a few moments ago as he watches you step into the room. His gaze is steady and his look is intense, but there is a hint of something else in his expression that you have not yet been able to pinpoint.
“I heard our army won the war” You make your way to the general walking past the table onto where he stood. You raised your eyebrows when you saw the maps splayed on the table. “Yet you seem to be plotting on another”- you say studying the maps.
General Kirigan nods his head as you study the maps on the table. "Indeed we have succeeded in our mission to liberate Fjerda, yet there is something troubling me," he pauses for a moment and glances over at you with a look of contemplation. "You are quite observant, Y/N. I must admit it has been a while since someone has caught an anomaly so quickly." I smile shyly in response, focusing my attention on him. “The king sent me to help you with your battle scars”
General Kirigan leans forward slightly and stares into your eyes intently. They meet yours for a long moment without him blinking and then he finally nods. “I see. The king sent you to ease my injuries. Quite thoughtful of him don’t you think?”- he says proceeding to remove his kefta.
I look away pretending to study my surroundings as he undoes his shirt. “Of course”- I reply softly, fidgeting with the hem of my dress nervously.
“I must say I’m quite pleased you accepted to offer your help Y/N” You turn around and notice the general seated on his arm chair. He casually leans back making himself comfortable. Immediately your eyes fixate on his body.  You take in the way his pale chest glistens under the chandelier lights. His chest rises and falls with every breath and all of a sudden you’re unable to form words. The heat seems to have risen in the room.
You seat yourself next to him and subtly ask for permission to inspect his arm. “Tell me about the war”- you say softly, attempting to make conversation just so you could keep your mind distracted from any foolish thoughts. He simply looks at you intently and nods.
“We grisha are difficult to eradicate” You frown as you gently run your hands over his scars tracing his arms to his shoulders. “Though they put up quite a show”- He answers smiling in amusement.
You hum in response as your mind is preoccupied in healing him. You were too fixated on what you were doing to realise the general’s gaze was upon you the entire time. You work your way to his muscular torso. He sucks in a sharp breath when your hand lingers over his chest. You snap out of your trance and look at him in guilt “Does that hurt?”
The general's breathing grows heavy and he swallows tightly as your touch lingers on his chest. When you ask if he feels pain, the general shakes his head slightly. "It does not pain me." He closes his eyes and tilts his head slightly. The general glances down at his torso to see where your hands are resting, but instead notices that you are looking at him. He smiles softly.
You blush profusely under his gaze and nod continuing your work. "You're very brave"- you say sitting up inspecting his body for any more wounds.
The general is quiet for a moment as he watches you inspect his body for any more wounds. His breathing is slow and steady, and his eyes seem to be gazing right through you. He is clearly enjoying your attention.
Finally, he speaks up, but you cannot help but notice that his voice is still deep and dark in tone. “Brave?” The general glances down at the scar on his torso and back up to you. “I don’t really think of myself as brave. I simply have the best interests of Ravka in my mind. It’s my honour to serve the kingdom”
You smile amused. "Not a lot of people are brave enough to lead a battle" Your eyes lock with his and you quickly look away "There is a cut on your face, may I?"- You ask politely
The general nods his head slightly as he hears your question. “You may.” His eyes follow your hands as they reach towards his face, and they meet yours for a moment when your hands make contact with his skin. The general’s features remain stoic as you begin to treat his cut and your fingers move across his face. His heartbeat quickens.
His hand envelops yours that’s on his face. “Y/N”- he starts leaning in gently. “Thank you for your help” He hastily stands up and you’re taken aback. His face is expressionless and you’re unable to comprehend what had just happened.
You clear your throat and nod unable to meet his eyes. “I must return to my chambers, I’ll be sure to send the king your regards”- you said quickly, turning away clearly hurt.
Just as you take a step he grabs your hand. “Wait” You turn around sighing only to see him staring longingly at you. He gently tugs on your hand and pulls you closer until your faces are inches apart.
“General I-”
“Call me Aleksander”- he replies sternly
As you’re about to say something he places his finger upon your mouth. “Shh”- he whispers, his breath heavy on your neck.  Your eyes flutter close and you lean in. The general leans forward towards you and his lips meet yours in a slow and heated kiss. He slowly slides his arm around your waist and pulls you in closer to him, your bodies now pressed tightly against each other. His lips linger on yours before he pulls away and looks directly into your eyes.
You blink as if in a trance and a smile forms on your face. The general seems overwhelmed by your smile and he looks at you for a long moment without saying a word. He looks as if he is trying to find the right thing to say.
Finally, he clears his throat and looks away. His face is slightly red and he speaks quietly.
“I hope to see you again Y/N”
“I hope so too”- You reply and make your way out. Your cheeks are still tinted red and there are countless thoughts in your mind. You linger for a moment more outside the door and walk away smiling.

Tumblr media
Aleksander walked through the corridors of Little Palace, trying to find one of his most trusted Grisha, who was also the person who made his heart beat a little faster. He lived for centuries, hiding his identity from people, always hiding his emotions, and always striving to achieve his goals. But then they showed on his path - a person with great power and strong will. A person who always cared for the people they loved and who found a way to parts of his heart that he’d forgotten. Somehow, they’d ended up sitting together into late nights, talking about everything but plans for Grishas’ training or plans for the army. He allowed himself to open up for the first time since he lost Luda, and for the first time, he allowed himself to feel again. He was afraid to call it as it was, but the truth was that he loved them. And they loved him.
The Darkling walked to the training yard, not minding Grishas, who welcomed him. He quickly knew he was in the right place and finally found them. He first heard their soft laugh and then saw them in the middle of the training yard with Fedyor, surrounded by younger Grishas. He knew that they loved to teach them, and they only showed these kids how to defend themself. But something deep in his mind made him angry at the sight of Fedyor’s hand around them. He watched how he moved his hands to their sides and started to tickle them. They squealed at the feeling and tried to escape from him, laughing loudly. The Darkling watched how close they were and how fondly they looked at each other. The betrayal blossomed in his chest. They gently tapped the Heartrender’s chest, smiling widely. Kirigan couldn’t watch it anymore and turned on his heel, quickly going to his chambers. What he didn’t know, they saw him at the last moment, and they started worrying about his hurried departure. They ended her part of the lesson and asked Fedyor to watch their training when they went after their General. After a few moments, they knocked on the doors of his cabinet. They smiled at the sound of this deep voice telling anyone behind them that he was busy. They dared to open them and snicked in, biting their lower lip.
“Maybe you’ll find a second for me, General?” They leaned against the door, watching him. They knew that even if he didn’t raise his head from maps, he knew it was them. They smiled at how his black kefta perfectly wrapped his tall body.
“Make it quick. I have a war to win.” They sighed and came closer to him, gently touching his elbow. When he didn’t change his position, they dared to lean against him, resting their cheek on his arm. They could tell that he was tense, and they hated it.
“I know, handsome, and you’re doing an amazing job. But even you, great General Kirigan, need some rest. And I saw you at the training yard.”
“You saw me?” He said mockingly. “You seemed busy with this Heartrender.” He moved away, taking his arm from their grip, and they looked at him surprised. They laughed breathlessly, standing in front of him.
“With Fedyor? He is only my friend. A very close friend, who was the first one to welcome me here with open arms and who made me feel at home here.” They said with a small smile, which faded when he constantly pretended they were not there. “If you want to accuse me of something, say it aloud rather than shutting me out.” When he heard the sadness in their voice, he stopped moving, and his eyes landed on the war figures in front of him. After a few seconds, he breathed deeply.
“Are they really ‘just a friend’?” He murmured without raising his head.
“Of course, they are just a friend. If you want to know, Fedyor lately was on a few dates with a person you know very well.”
“With who?” Alexander knew about their love for gossip. With time he discovered that it brought both of them joy, so he started encouraging them to spill a bean about it. He also wanted to be wholly sure that they were only his and that there wasn’t anybody else in their life.
“With your own personal Corporalki.” They couldn’t stop a big smile when he looked at them stunned.
“With Ivan?” They nodded, carefully watching his face. He started thinking about the latest behaviour of this man. “He was a little strange lately, in fact. Like… Happier.” They couldn’t stop the smile rising on their face, and once again, they tried to slowly touch his forearm. They breathed with relief when he didn’t move away this time.
“Because they are, both of them. Like I am happy when you are next to me because only our loved one can pull some of the strings in our hearts and make it beat faster in that specific way. So I will say it once again. They are only my friend. It’s YOU who has my heart.” They gently squeezed his arm, and finally, he moved closer to them with a look on his face reserved only for time when they were alone. His hands mindlessly moved to their hips, and in a quick move, he made them sit on the table behind them. They let the squeak leave their throat, making him smile widely at what they started laughing. Their hands slowly moved to rest on his shoulders, and one of them mindlessly started fidgeting with the ends of the hair on his neck.
“You… You made me happy, you know?” He whispered sheepishly, and they could only smile wider.
“I know. Were you jealous?” They bit her lips to stop grinning, especially when they saw a flush coming into his cheeks. He looked above them, trying to compose himself. Before he could answer, they leaned down and softly kissed his bearded cheek. “Please, don’t deny it. It actually… flatters me, you know? I… I always dreamed of having a person who would care for me enough to do it. Even if there isn’t any reason for that.”
The Darkling gently squeezed their hips, standing between their legs. His hand moved to their thigh, caressing it gently.
“I do care. Every single look from other men or women is enough to feel jealousy in me. To want to show all of them that you are mine.”
“And I always will be.” They whispered, and General immediately leaned down, kissing them deeply. One of his hands moved to the back of their head, gently moving it to allow him better access while the other kept them close. They moaned into his lips, wrapping one leg around him, wanting to feel every centimetre of his body. They were so lost in each other that they didn’t hear the knock on the door or that somebody had walked in. They were too busy unfastening his kefta to care about anything. Poor Ivan closed the door quicker than he ever opened them. After a moment of shock, Corporalki felt happiness for his General and his friend - even a dark soul like him deserved some light and love in the arms of a trusted person.

Imagine that Sturmhond reveals himself as Prince Nikolai Lantsov, but you couldn't accept it
Tumblr media
Disclaimer:
This oneshot is purely based on the Netflix series, so some of the lore might be incorrect
y/n is a female Grisha
Angst/Fluff
"Captain, are you sure that the Saint is stable enough to cross the fold?" y/n approached the captain's table and crossed her arms before him. The Volkvolny was beginning to rumble from the calling of the Fold, and as a Materialki, you weren't really fond of how the wooden planks of the ship you had invented with your Captain begun to stir.
"Y/n, how many times have I asked you to address me by Sturmhond?" The blonde and blue-eyed privateer snickered at you, leaning back against his cushioned chair and crossing his legs. You remained silent and only had a concerned look crossing your features. "Come on, then. Call me by my name then I shall answer you," he added and began beckoning you toward him.
"Alright... Sturmhond. Now answer me," you rolled your eyes. "You know how terrified I am of the Fold. If I get caught by one of the Volcra in there, I'll be demanding that you pay for my health insurance even if I'm dead,".
"I would expect no less from you," he pulled a soft smile at your direction, which almost warmed your heart - almost. You shook your head as he stood up from his chair and stood next to you.
"It'll be alright, y/n. Alina's strong enough with her amplifier. You'll be safe, I can promise you that," he muttered, casting a soft smile at you before he climbed the stairs to the upper deck.
"No doubt he's about to show off the Hummingbird," you rolled your eyes and tailed him.
Before you knew it, you were suddenly up in the air and reaching the entrance of the Fold. You looked up at the abyssal storm, growling and calling before your very eyes. Quickly turning around, you saw that only a few of the Volkvolny crew, including yourself and your captain; the Saint herself and her lover were aboard the Hummingbird.
Alina Starkov looked back at the Fold with a determined glare, while Mal's eyes were clouded with his usual protectiveness. Before you could turn to look at Sturmhond, he had already crossed the ship's deck and stood by your side, linking your arms tightly with his.
"It's going to be alright. You don't have to be scared," he mumbled in a low voice, almost to himself. You could hear the slight tremble in his voice, and you knew you weren't alone in this consuming fear - he felt the same way too.
"Sturmhond," you turned your wrists so your palms could capture his. "I trust you," you nodded once before turning back at the starless sky as darkness consumed your surrounding.
Both of you gasped, but held each other tight. The Fold was pitch black and cold - colder than the sea breeze at night. Your mind suddenly travelled to what you could do as a Grisha. You were just a Materialki - a person who could manipulate earth and steel - but, what use is that when it comes to something as powerful as the darkness?
Suddenly, a blinding white light filled your eyes and it came from the Saint.
Sturmhond's blue eyes filled with marvel and wonder, and your heart ached to see them as you realised that he could never look at you the same way he looked at Alina's beautiful sunlight. You pursed your lips and slowly attempted to loosen your grip of his hand, but it won't move a muscle.
You closed your eyes and hoped that this would end soon.
As no light could pierce your eyelids, you thought that the worst is over, but only found that Alina was gasping for air and could not summon the sunlight anymore. Mal rushed to her side to protect her from the Darkness of the Fold, while Sturmhond quickly removed your hands from his and grabbed his pistol.
You rushed to the front of the Hummingbird and placed your hands on the engine of the ship, forcing the gears to work harder so everyone could get out of the Fold quickly. Some of the crew members screamt as they were grabbed by the Volcra and fell to their death.
You panicked as one of the Volcra almost snatched you into the air, but you had quickly picked up a crowbar and shifted it into a sword before slicing it into half.
"Now, that's my lady!" Sturmhond shouted from across the deck as he continued shooting the beasts. You rolled your eyes and with your last effort, you pushed the engines to their limit before they gave out one last revolution and ceased their turning.
And all of you were so close to getting out of the Fold.
"Brace! Brace for impact!" You shouted loud enough for everyone to hear as you shut your eyes hard and focused your abilities to the front of the ship, bending the round-edged wood to become sharp-edged, so that as they land on the ground, it would pierce the dirt and lessen the damage on the Hummingbird. Sturmhond wasn't going to let it go if she had let his precious invention turn into ruin.
The ship dug into the dirt of East Ravka and slid across the grass. Everyone let out a whelp as their knees collapsed from the impact. You exhaled a large breath and wiped a sweat from your forehead. It was definitely hard to use the small sciences without looking at what you're about to change.
Tamar and Tolya were the first to cheer, while Sturmhond quickly ran over to you.
"Are you alright? You seemed to be doing a lot of work there," he spoke - and for the first time, it seemed like it was out of concern.
"Yeah, and it's all because I had to save your damn ship from falling to pieces," you groaned at him, which only received a long chuckle from him.
Out of the blue, everyone heard the marching of more than a legion of soldiers.
"What's going on?" You muttered to yourself, but your eyes held Sturmhond's.
He avoided them and only shook his head.
"Identify yourself!" The captain of the soldier commanded. The Sun Summoner seemed clearly irritated while Sturmhond grasped her shoulder with his one arm and gave it a gentle squeeze.
"I'll handle this," he said and he began to undress himself off his long, ridiculous privateer coat and he seemed to behaving a conversation with the captain. You parted your lips to ask him "Wouldn't you end up naked?", but you quickly took your words back when your eyes perceived Sturmhond wearing a green uniform gilded in golden embroidery, a uniform almost similar to those Ravkan soldiers, but it carried a higher air of command.
"It can't be," the man named Ravski gasped.
"Yes, it is," Sturmhond responded. You unbuckled your knees to get a better view of what was happening.
"Moi Tsarevich," Ravski began to kneel. "My prince,".
You gasped, while Mal and Alina passed each other confused looks.
"I present Nikolai Lantsov, Major of the 22nd Regiment, Soldier of the King's Army, Grand Duke of Udova, and Second Son to his Most Royal Majesty - King Pyotr the Third - Ruler of the Double Eagle Throne!" The captain announced with a spirited voice, while Sturmhond - now Nikolai pulled a smug look across his face.
You couldn't believe your eyes that the man in which you had spent years with was in fact, the estranged Prince of Ravka himself. Your lips quivered as memories came flooding back to you, but you knew that you couldn't cause a scene.
The prince had already been enjoying himself too much.
~•~
Everyone had reached the Stronghold (or moreso like a base) where Grisha who opposed against the Darkling and survivors of East Ravka remained. You spotted Zoya, someone who had always taught you the meaning of hard life back at the Little Palace - greeting Alina Starkov like old friends.
You clenched your fists and held back your tears. Once again, you were a stranger to everyone around you. The only person that you could become yourself was now gone too.
"One week," you took a deep breath in your personal quarters, which was very much far away from Alina and Nikolai's - given your status as a Materialki Grisha. Even Tolya and Tamar's rooms were closer to the Prince's. "Hold on for one week and we shall see," you swallowed the fear in your throat.
Your y/e/c shifted to your modest bed and you laid yourself there - hoping that your memories won't haunt you at night. Everyone was in a meeting to discuss their next move against the Darkling, but you weren't included - as expected.
That night, you recalled the memories from a time long forgotten of you, your brothers and sisters which were called upon to the Little Palace and serve as the Second Army for the Tsar. You shared their excitement when all of you had found out that you were Grisha. Your twin sisters were prodigal Heartrenders like Tamar and Tolya, while your eldest brother was an Inferni and your younger brother was a Squaller. Everyone was suited for battle and talented - but not you.
You were just a plain Materialki - a Durast who was weak and could not bend swords or bullets quickly enough to save your life. And so, you were never ordered to Battle like your siblings since even the Darkling did not acknowledge your abilities.
One day, the Tsar ordered his princes to enter and cross the Fold for a diplomatic mission on west Ravka. Something happened when they were on their way back, and they had to kill as much Volcra as possible along with only a few of the Second Army Soldiers escorting them - with the Heartrenders being your own two sisters and ome of the squallers your younger brother. Almost none survived, with the exception of his princes, as it seemed.
You and your eldest brother grieved their death, and sent many personal letters to both the Darkling and the King, requesting for the return of the bodies of your fallen siblings. However, both of them rejected your requests, giving an excuse that their main priority was to search for the Second Prince - none other than Nikolai Lantsov, instead of bringing their bodies home.
You and your brother were devastated, and he was suddenly being called upon to fight at the Fjerdan borders. You had tried your best to make an armor for him, in which no bullet should be able to pass through - and it worked - only if it hadn't been for the Fjerdans to cut off his head when your brother was wounded.
Distressed, you crossed the the Fold from East to West Ravka by yourself with an invention you had so carelessly made, as an effort to hopefully let the Saints decide your fate in the abyss. And you could have died, if your wounded self wasn't discovered by Sturmhond.
You woke up silently with your eyes brimming in tears. Your siblings' lack of proper burial, Sturmhond's deceit, and your uselessness as a Durast was all too much for you. The very thought of being under the roof of the man which had both killed and saved your life was something your heart could not handle anymore.
You had to leave.
Its not like anyone would realise nor dread your absence.
Wiping the silent and hot tears pouring out of your eyes, you began to pack some clean clothes into your knapsack, a pair of daggers, a map of Ravka, money, food and water. There wasn't much to pack anyway. You put on a cloak and blew out your candle before you opened your door.
"Captain-!" You exclaimed as the blonde and blue-eyed man which had been by your side for years suddenly showed up in front of you with his hands up, and hand balled into a fist, as if he wanted to knock on your door.
"Y/n, you're awake!" He gasped and pulled a cheesy smile. "I guess you've been around me for too long until you could sense me from far away, then?" He chuckled. Slowly observing his formal attire, it was obvious that he had just finished his meeting.
"You're incredibly loud with everything you do, that's how I know," You pursed your lips and forced a smile.
He nodded and began to peek around your pitch black room, past your shoulders. "Your quarters are very dark now, aren't they?" He commented.
"I was sleeping, Capta-I mean, uhm, moi Tsarevich," and you kept a distance away from him as you recalled that the man before you was ranks higher above yours.
"You were asleep with your travelling cloak?" He raised a playful brow.
"You shouldn't be here. Just go to sleep, my prince. You look tired after the meeting,".
"About that," the prince pushed your arm which was blocking the way into your room and lit a match. He searched for your candle for a second and lit it up. "I wanted to talk to you about what happened... earlier," he muttered and his bright eyes searched your room.
"There's nothing to talk about-,".
"Saints, why did they give you such an empty room? There's barely anything in here!" He jumped and began going through your old cupboard. You sighed and closed your eyes, not knowing how to properly deal with the man.
"My prince, you're no longer Sturmhond. Its improper for you to act in this manner. I beg of you, please remove yourself from my quarters," your heart was beginning to ache, but he was seemingly avoiding your words as he continued rambling around.
"The only thing here as stuffed as the king is your-," and his eyes paused at your knapsack. "Why is it packed, y/n? Where are you going?".
"Its none of your concern, my prince," You could not brave yourself to look into his eyes.
"Saints, just call me Nikolai, y/n,".
"How can I just call you Nikolai Lantsov when you've been my Captain and Sturmhond to me?" You snapped as irritation overwhelmed you.
"You don't understand, Nikolai - you're a prince. I'm just a deserter of the Second Army and we're not equals anymore,".
"Come on, you know that I don't think of you that way-,".
"Either way, you can't stop me from leaving," your voice trembled.
Nikolai suddenly crossed his arms and he passed a stern glare at you, a look you had rarely seen him equip himself with. In that moment, you realised that he truly was a Prince - not just any foolish prince like his brother, but a man of command, a man who you could have followed anywhere, even to the edge of the world - if it hadn't been for yourself.
"You can't leave. I forbid you," he stated with his sudden cold blue eyes fixed upon you.
"You have no right to give orders to me," You took a few steps toward him, almost challenging his command.
"You can't leave," Nikolai breathed, voice softening as he slowly closed the distance between the two of you.
"I have no place here - by your side, as a soldier in this war you've involved yourself with. I'm a lesser Durast compared to the ones you've got here-,".
"No one's ever said that to you," Nikolai's hand reached your arm, almost grasping it to not let you go.
"No one needed to say it. I couldn't save my brother because of it. What makes you think that I could save you when you need my help?" your face went hot as you realised how close the both of you were to each other. That panicked heartbeat of yours thundered against your chest and you were worried if he could hear it.
"We made our ship together, y/n. You helped me with my inventions, made it ours and saved me, countless of times during our raids-," he pulled a bittersweet smile as he recalled his days together with you as a privateer.
"Nikolai," your hand instinctively reached his cheek, and he leaned into your touch - blue eyes glowing with a desperate blaze. "Those days are now over. You're a Ravkan Prince and you must let go of things that do not matter anymore - like me,".
He took in a sharp breath and refused to look into your eyes for the first time.
It was true that you had to leave him because there was no chance that the both of you could live peacefully together, sailing away with hopes of building a family together - free from any danger. That was your dream, and not his. Nikolai had always been ambitious, despite his foolhardy efforts to make him appear the opposite.
When he remained silent, you passed by his shoulder and grabbed your knapsack. You crossed your room and to your door, before hesistating to reach for the doorknob. Turning back to him one last time, you stretched a soft and genuine smile of fond farewell to Nikolai.
"Farewell, moi Sobachka. If the Saints would allow it, we'll meet again," you muttered and closed the door behind you as you left.
Nikolai stared at the still door, breathless and heart aching. His heart was heavy, but he understood why you had to leave. With his final breath within your presence, he breathed:
"I love you,".

Prologue
It was a magic that came long before the Grisha, before the Darkling, something so ancient that it could never be learned.
Some say it was born along with the legends of the Saints, a knowledge that became forgotten after the Fold tore Ravka in two. Some say it was a magic so dark that not even Hell would be able to accept it. And some say, that those who were able to witness its potential, firmly believed that no human should ever be born with that kind of power.
Changing your nature and shape within seconds, forming a beast out of your own bones, tearing your skin and flesh apart only to pull it back together into some creature out of a nightmare, then turning back to human and laughing, smiling, like you are not something out of another world.
People feared the shapeshifters almost as much as the shadow summoners, and even before he became the Darkling and made the Fold, he felt a kind of nerve creep up on his spine at the mere mention of their kind. Especially when it was about the family that lived only a few miles from Os Alta. It was only a strange coincidence when he unleashed his power and made the Fold, that the family had been traveling to Os Kervo to visit the other half of the family. They had been turned into vile creatures, Volcras.
But that still wasn't as much worse as what waited for the family that stayed in Os Alta. An aunt, her son, and her two nieces. They didn't stay long after the news of the Fold reached them. They packed every essential and escaped during te cold winter night, thankful for the shadows and the snow. But luck was not on their side for long. Grisha men, sent by the Darkling himself found them as soon as they left the city. All of them died that night, except one of the nieces. Her aunt told the kids to shift into an animal, but sadly none of them got the proper training yet, except that niece who was only a year older than the rest. She quickly changed into an owl and flew away. The men mistook her for the bird, so they let her go. She watched the remains of her family burn, until there was nothing but ashes of them left. The screams she heard that night would haunt her for the rest of her life.
After the incident, she flew to Os Kervo, to the other part of the family that she hoped would still be alive. Hopefully, she found them, but after a few days, they were on the run again. They need to take a ship and separate. Some wanted to go to Novyi Zem, to the countryside, others to Shu Han and Kerch. The niece wanted to go with her two other cousins to Kerch Island, dreaming about a life where she wouldn't have to run ever again. Her luck seemed to finally leave her side, when upon arriving to the ship, the Darkling captured her and her family.
They were prisoners for crimes that didn't even exist, thrown in dark cells with no light and no food, slavers to the Darkling's twisted mind, people to experiment on even after multiple failed tests. Their life from then on consisted of nothing but pain and torture. The days turned into weeks, months and years, but it all seemed one endless moment for them. No one knew what happened between the walls of that prison they called a laboratory. Their blood were taken, injected with drugs and put back in their system, their bones got cut off just so they can order them to grow it back and cut it off again.
Death would have been a blessing. And every time they felt its dark claws slowly pull them into the depths, they got taken care of, cured, only for the experiments to go on. The Darkling didn't let them live, so why would he let them die? Especially after he found out shapeshifters can live for centuries, just like the Grisha?
The torture went on for at least a century, before one of the young guards had the chance to help them escape. He tried rescuing all of them, but they told him to take the women first. They would have told him to take the children too, but those little kids were now grown-ups. The guard did what they asked and helped the women escape. It was the dead of night and no one asked him how he got the other guards unconscious, they were just relieved that they could finally leave.
The niece was yet again one of the only ones left.
The guard took them to a carriage that was waiting for them to go to the harbor. When he came up with the men, a shot rang in the air, and the man he was carrying collapsed on the ground, with blood pooling around his head. They wanted to shapeshift, but everyone was still tired and weak from the imprisonment.
Six women and eight men escaped the laboratory. By the time they got to the harbor, only four of them were left.
The niece who escaped from Os Alta, her two cousins, and her uncle. They all watched as their family got killed in front of their eyes, and they all felt guilty for not being able to help them. They were all exhausted, hungry, and hopeless. They tried to keep their loved ones from bleeding to death, but each time they failed. The blood still stained their hands, under the warm fabric the guard gave them.
He knew he couldn't stay and that he had to give up his life in Ravka, but it didn't feel like a mistake for him. He got to free these poor people, and someday they might be able to expose the Darkling's sick secret. If they let him help.
The five of them got on board, and after the guard let them into one of the rooms on deck, he only asked them one question:
"Where do you want to go?"
Four heads turned to him in shock. They expected him to just leave them in the harbor, or sell them once they were on board. He didn't. He told them the ship docks in Shu Han, before it makes its way to Ketterdam, and later to Novyi Zem. The two cousins decided to go to Shu Han. When they docked, the young guard gave them some money and a piece of paper, with a cheap inn's address on it. In the last minute, the uncle decided to stay with them for a while, wanting to protect them while they made a new life for themselves. The niece wanted to stay with her family, she didn't want to be alone, but the thought of a new life was something that she couldn't give up. And the fact that whenever she looked at them she could only see the lifeless bodies staring back at her, making her stomach turn and bile rise up in her throat. It was a feeling she didn't want to experience in her family's company. So she bid them goodbye and got on the ship to sail to Novyi Zem.
In the next few weeks, she and the young guard got closer. They wouldn't have called it anything romantic, but both of them felt like they found a great friend in the other. The guard constantly teased the girl with all kinds of knowledge, and she listened. She never spoke to him about anything. But in the few rare moments she did, he drank her words like they were the first sip of water after walking through a desert.
And after docking in Novyi Zem, they moved to the countryside, slowly getting accustomed to each other, living together and painfully slowly falling in love with each other. The girl would never admit it, but she was the first to fall.
They had two children: a son and a daughter. Both healthy and strong, happy kids. As time passed, it started to become noticeable, that only the son had the abilities of a shapeshifter. In Shu Han with the two cousins, one of them had three kids and only two of them had the ability, with the other cousin and her two kids-only one of them. With the uncle, it was his only child that had no magic.
By the time Y/N Orlova was born in the morning sun in Os Kervo, the magic no longer flowed through her family's veins. It had died out generations ago.
Or at least, that's what she had been told.
Raffiel, her brother, was four years older than her, and he had already discovered the magic in himself, making requests to their mother to teach him. Their mother was one of the last remaining shapeshifters in the world, along with her two children.
And when Y/N turned four, she told her brother about the powers she had, but her brother always turned her excitement down. He didn't want to, but he also didn't want her to be disappointed by their mother, because she couldn't face her true self.
The girl turned eight, nine, and on the night of her tenth birthday, her brother sneaked them out of the house, and showed her the few things they can do with their magic. He had turned into a big brown dog, the one he knew her sister liked to pat on their way to the market. Y/N looked at him with both confusion and amazement, and when he turned back, she bombed him with questions. After he calmed her down, he told her everything he learned so far, and showed her how to do it. It took them almost all night to finally get her to transform into a cat, and it took them two hours to get her to turn back. After that night, it became a habit to sneak out every two or three days and practice. Two years and many many lessons later, they were able to shapeshift in an instant into anything (or anyone) they wanted to.
But it was also two years later, that their parents died. It was quick and harsh, and done by none other than the Darkling. He became so paranoid after the incident in the laboratory, that during the grisha's testing he also tested kids for shapeshifting. Every time the tests failed, he became more and more relaxed. Maybe it was Raffiel's fault for being out so late, maybe it was Y/N'S for begging for ten more minutes, but nonetheless, one of the patrolling Grisha guards saw them and reported it back to the Darkling. He was quite busy with finding the Sun Summoner at the time, but the news about living shapeshifters immediately caught his attention. He sent three Inferni's to their house. When the kids father saw them, he told them to go and hide behind the bushes in the garden. Y/N was old enough to understand the fear behind her father's words and silently followed her brother.
The kids sat down behind the bushes, even slightly covering themselves with it. Through the small window of the kitchen, they saw the men standing in front of their parents. They couldn't hear what they were saying, but when one of the Grishas slapped their mother, Y/N was on her feet ready to burst into the house, if Raffiel didn't pull her down in time. One of the guards looked their way through the window, but couldn't see them so he walked back to their mother, who was holding the side of her face. They saw their father grabbing the rifle from behind him and smacking it on the man's head. He collapsed on the ground while the other two throw a ball of fire on their father's arms and on the wall. The house caught on fire quickly, but their father didn't seem to care about it.
Before the two men could even take a step towards their mother, he grabbed the rifle with one hand and pushed their mother behind him, while signaling something to her. That was the first and only time Y/N and Raffiel saw their mother shapeshift. She turned into a beautiful female lion. She was so enormous that their father almost seemed small. The two Inferni took a step back, before casting fire into their hands, ready to kill their parents.
Their father fired the rifle without hesitation, while their mother sprinted to the men, trying to tore their limbs apart. Her jaw was clenched around one of the Inferni's torso, ready to bite it in half, when all of a sudden, he dug his fingers into her side, making flames dance around her skin. She immediately let go of him and stumbled back, roaring still in her lion form.
Meanwhile, Raffiel tried to muffle his sister's screams and trying to hold back his own. Tears covered his own face while his sister cried into his arms. Their house was on fire, along with their parents still inside. The two Grisha throw flames everywhere, before quickly leaving the place. After they left, Raffiel helped Y/N up from the ground and they ran to the kitchen door that led outside. When they opened it, the warmth felt almost scorching as they looked around. They found their mother in her human form, screaming so loud they had to cover their ears. Their father was crawling to her on the floor when they reached them. Their parents were dying, and they couldn't do anything about it.
When their mother saw them she stopped the screaming and began sobbing. She reached one of her burnt hands out, and both Y/N and Raffiel held it gently. She coughed a few times before looking up at them.
"You need to get out," her sweet voice was no longer sweet, it sounded dry and raspy, so much harsher than it usually was. "Raffi, I need you...to get the box under my bed-" she violently coughed and they noticed their father taking a deep breath, before continuing instead of her. "There's a bag next to it. Take that too. It's heavy, but you need to take it!" He inhaled sharply. "And promise...promise me, you won't open it, until you're in Ketterdam!" He said and Y/N looked at him with teary eyes.
"No! I won't leave without you!" She yelled, but she felt her brother slowly standing up from next to her. "No! Don't leave, we have to get them out of here!" Her brother shook his head as he cried and went to their parent's room. Y/N looked at him with disbelief, before her mother spoke up.
"Listen little bird, I need you to take care of your brother." She smiled as the tears scrolled down on her face. "You know he can't cook." She giggled for a second before coughing again, only this time blood stained her mouth. "We love you both,"
"No, no, no! Stay awake!" Y/N exclaimed as her brother came back with the bag on his shoulder and box in hand. He looked at his father and sobbed. "Why are you sending us away?"
"Because you two have something that people would kill you for, and that's your blood. Please, watch out...for the people you...trust." Their father's words became slower as he spoke. He laid his head down on their mother's shoulder, trying to keep his eyes open. Their mother looked at her children and one last time told them how much she loves them.
With a tear stained face, Raffiel led his sister out of the house before it collapsed. They watched in horror as the ceiling came down, and the house wasn't there anymore. It looked like one big campfire, that by morning will turn to ashes.
The two siblings reluctantly walked to the stable and led their only horse, Jack, out. They got onto his back and went to the city, and to the harbor and to the deck of the ship. It took hours for them to get from the countryside to the city, even with Jack. Raffiel had to redirect them because his gaze often got foggy from the tears and almost led them off the road. When they reached the market, they led their horse to one of the farmers and with a heavy heart, sold him. It took both of the siblings at least ten minutes to leave the horse behind. They bought their ticket and sailed to Ketterdam.
They didn't say a word to each other nor to anyone. Y/N was never a clingy person, especially not at twelve years old, yet she didn't let go of her brother. He didn't let go of her either. He either hugged her to himself or let his shoulder rest around her, but he always found a way to keep her close to him.
It took them a week to sail from Os Kervo to Ketterdam. When they got off the ship they immediately began walking, without glancig at anyone. Raffiel passed the bag to Y/N, to keep the box steady in his arms. Ghezen forbid someone stole it from them.
They kept walking and walking, until they reached the Financial District and stood in front of a two story house, that looked like it belong more to the countryside than the city. Raffiel knocked twice on the door and heard someone moving to open it. Their aunt's surprised face stared back at them.
"Y/N, Raffiel! What are you two doing here?" She asked but as she looked at their dirty clothes, tear stained faces and realized their parents were nowhere to be seen, she quickly put her hand on her mouth, muffling her yelp. "No. It-It can't be." She said but when she noticed what Raffiel was holding, a sob escaped her. "Oh my... I'm so sorry, kids!" She got them inside and locked the door behind them.
She led them into the small kitchen and quickly began filling the wooden table with food and drinks. She placed water and tea in front of them, along with two bowls of hot soup. They didn't even lift a finger to eat it. She didn't remove them.
They sat in silence, except the sobs and sniffles that came from them from time to time. After a long while, their aunt stood up and wiped her face with her hands. "You two sleep in my room tonight, I'll sleep in the guest room. And tomorrow...tomorrow we'll figure everything out." She sniffled and took the bag and box they brought up to her room. The siblings got up from their seats and followed her.
Their aunt brought two more blankets and some old shirts and pants for them to wear. She brought towels too, if they felt like washing themselves a little.
None of them slept that night. Y/N slowly dozed off, but Raffiel had to put her back to sleep multiple times after each time she jolted up. He didn't mind that he couldn't sleep. Taking care of her sister took his mind off their parents. And their aunt? She didn't even try to sleep. She was up all night in the guest room, trying to find a way to arrange a small funeral, figure out how to raise her niece and nephew, how to keep them safe in this city. By sunrise, she was dressed in her casual outfit, basket on her harm, and at least four list of things she'll need. She tip toed around the house not to wake the kids, though she suspected they haven't slept either. She left them a note on the kitchen table that she went to the market and she'll be back before lunch.
They spent that year in mourning. They didn't talk to each other much, but they were always there when one of them had a panic attack. They tried to work it out, tried to get out of that constant sadness, but it was like whenever they finally started to get out of it, they saw, heard, or smelled something that threw them back into a dark place.
Y/N was the first to stop crying. After about three months, she stopped crying altogether. She didn't cry, didn't sniffle, sometimes even her eyes didn't tear up. Even when their aunt got shot during a fight on the street, she didn't even tear up. Her whole face fell and shock was evident on it. But no single tear. She got used to her loved ones dying around her. Sometimes she would reply to things with a harsh, even cruel comment, and it often made Raffiel angry. They had fights almost every week, throwing words at each other that they knew they didn't mean, but in the heat of the moment it felt the opposite.
Her brother slowly started to understand her numbness towards violence. It was her way of coping with these scary things. If she won't give herself time to cry, then she wouldn't fall back into the numbness after their parents' death. Raffiel hated that his sister had to hide her vulnerability. He hated himself too, for not being able to help her anymore.
After their aunt's death, they got to keep the house, but it was just another reminder of the things they lost. It was still better than living on the street, but Raffiel figured that if they don't find a job soon, they will be. One night, he told his idea to Y/N, and they agreed that the next day they're going to go and find a job. Raffiel suggested that Y/N asks around in bars and hotels for something like a cleaning lady, or a maid. Next day they both went and asked around, and by nighttime they both found a job. Raffiel's going to be a driver for carriages, and Y/N will be cleaning at a club.
What she didn't tell to her brother though, was that she saw a girl a few years older than her at the bar, putting on her coat and leaving the club. She followed her and when the lady went through an alley, Y/N quickly grabbed her coat and took it off of her. She tried to fight back, but when she turned around there was no one there. Y/N quickly hid behind the corner with the coat still in her hands, and after the lady quickly went away, she put the coat on herself and went back to the club.
She saw the bartender looking at her with furrowed brows. "I thought you weren't gonna stay for the night shift," He said and stared at her. Y/N didn't think before she spoke up, on a voice that belonged to the lady who she just robbed. "And I won't. I came back for an afternoon drink," She said and sat down. She got drunk only once before, on her father's birthday, when she was ten years old and Raffiel managed to steal a bottle of kvas. She felt like shit the next day and her mother made her clear out the entire stable.
She got herself so drunk at the bar, that she didn't even notice that two angry men came towards her and threw her out the door, saying something about never coming back. The words sounded like they came from underwater. When she went to an alley and took her coat off, she quickly shifted back into herself and felt that the alcohol somewhat left her system. Her vision cleared a little and the noises around her didn't feel as distant. She shook her head and walked over to the club's door, when the two guards stopped her.
"You can't go in there," one of them said on a low voice, but Y/N just straightened her back and spoke confidently. "I'm in need of a job. Are you looking for someone?" She asked but the guards just laughed at her. She kept her face neutral as the answer came. "You're looking at the wrong place. This is the Crow Club, not an orphanage." Just as he said those words, a man came through the door and began complaining about the servant girl who drank herself under the table, bothering customers. Then he noticed Y/N standing there, like she was waiting for something. The man asked the guards and they told him she's looking for a job.
"How old are you?" The man asked, and Y/N looked at him confidently. "Old enough." The man's eyebrow rose at the answer. "How tall are you?" "Tall enough to kick your knees out if I have to," The guards laughed at her remark, but the man just smirked. "And what is your business here?" "I need a job, and it seems you need a servant girl. Since you're already questioning me like you'd do for a job, you can save your time and hire me now." The three men looked pissed, but the one in the middle came closer to her and glanced at her form. Yes, she was shorter than her age, and she definiely didn't look like someone who would kick your ass. Not in that skirt at least.
"We'll get you some high heels, a new dress and you'll look old enough. You're on probation, and your job consist of clearing the tables, collecting the glasses and washing them. Payment's every first week of the month. You don't talk to anyone, you don't listen to anyone, you do what I say," He told her and opened the door to get back inside. The two guards looked a little surprised at his words. "I'm going to need a name if you want to work here."
Y/N hesitated for only a moment before answering. "Eliza" "Eliza, your shift starts tomorrow morning at six bells, and ends in the afternoon at two bells. If required, you're going to clean the place too. It won't be a problem, will it?"
"Absoluetly not, sir" Y/N answered and saw the man roll his eyes. "Don't call me sir. My name is Per Haskell, but you'll call me Boss, got it?" Y/N nodded her head and the man did the same, before saying "See you in the morning."
And that night when she was laying in bed, she thought about what she just did. She robbed a woman, stole her identity and job, and probably got herself bound with a club most definitely lead by a criminal. Per Haskell seemed anything but a decent man, even though she only talked to him for two minutes at most.
The confidence she faked in front of him died down as soon as she turned her back to them. She had to keep walking or else she would've sat down and cried in one of the alleys. It was getting dark and she was afraid to stay outside at night without her brother.
But no matter how scared she was, the rush and excitement she felt during those few minutes felt amazing. She knew she should've felt guilty because of what she did, but a part of her liked it just a little too much.
She didn't stop the small smile creeping up on her lips.

The area around you was full of darkness, and the silent was a little eerie.
You were back to the place you were before.
You heard footsteps which echoed around you, and you looked around you.
"Hello? Who's there?"
"Kiera." You turned around and from the shadows, a man appeared. He was dressed in dark clothes and his dark brown eyes showed relief and surprise as he stare at you.
"Who are you?" you asked softly.
He slowly approached to you, "You don't remember me... but I remember you. I was the first to hold you when you came to the world."
You stared at him for a moment, before you found your voice again, "Who are you?" you repeated.
He stepped closer and held out his hand, "I'm your father." You blinked, he couldn't be, he's-- "There's a reason I'm looking like this. And I will explain to you everything when we'll see each other. Where are you?"
You opened your mouth to answer.
Don't answer.
You frowned as you heard a few eerie voices whispering around you.
Don't answer.
Don't answer. He can't know.
He can't know, don't answer.
You looked down as the fog surrounded you as your shadows crawled to your arms.
Leave.
Don't look for him.
Evil.
Be aware.
Evil.
You opened your eyes and blinked the sleep from your eyes. You got up slowly and looked around your dark room before at the window. You let out a shaky breath and glanced down at your arms and hands.
Was that truly... My father...
You heard footsteps and cane clicking against the floor, so you got up and changed your shirt before walking out of your room.
You glanced to the office room and saw Kaz placing a sheet on top of a framed large picture. You stepped closer as you cleared your throat, and he glanced toward you before walking around the desk.
"Seems like you fell asleep again," he said.
"Yes, sorry, I'll, huh, I'll get ready and help Luke down at the bar," you said.
"You do that," he said as he sat down.
You turned around and walked back to your room. Kaz watched you leave and then his eyes darted to the picture that was covered under the sheet.
--
The crow club was filled with the sound of jingling coins, sloshing beverages and haughty laughter. Men and women tried their hands at the gambling tables, others were upon the bar where you and Luke, the older nice bartender, were.
Luke noticed how quiet you seemed tonight, and reached closer to the glasses next to you. "You alright, kiddo?" he asked quietly.
"Yeah, just..." you trailed off and shrugged lightly, "Tired, I guess." You walked around him and poured another drink to a man, who smirked at you and looked at you up and down.
You ignored his lusty gaze and poured to others.
Where are you? you thought back to what he--your... father, asked.
Don't answer. He can't know.
Leave.
Don't look for him.
Evil.
Be aware.
You sighed softly as you started to clean some of the glasses. "Hey, sweetheart." You looked over your shoulder at the man who was checking you out. "Give me another one."
Luke took the bottle and reached to fill the glass up from him, but the man stopped him, "No, no. I asked from her, not you."
"Yes, well, she is busy," Luke said as he gave him a look.
You put the glass down and reached over, "It's okay, Luke, I can handle it," you said as you took the bottle.
Luke glanced at you and then at the man before moving away, just a little just in case you would need him. You poured another drink for the man and gave him a look, "Last one. Go home after it."
"You invited to join me," he said in attempt to flirt.
You rolled your eyes, "No thanks."
"So, it is true then," he said as you attempted to turn to finish cleaning the glasses.
"What is?" you asked as you looked at him.
"You're the bastard's girl."
You frowned, "Excuse me?"
"Brekker," he said.
You blinked three times, before you raised an eyebrow, "Kaz? You think I'm with him?"
He nodded and smirked at you, "If not, you wouldn't reject me."
You tilted your head, "Oh honey, disgusting older men are not my type," you said and you moved to the other side of the bar, ignoring his glare.
A glass shuttered next to you and a woman gave a small scream by the startling noise, quieting everyone. You turned to the man you rejected and gave him a look.
"Really?" you asked in annoyance.
Inej, Kaz and Jesper were watching from the stair case what was happening. Jesper took a step down the stair to step in, but Kaz hold up his cane to stop him and see what would happen.
"I don't like how you speak to me," the man snapped.
You rolled your eyes, "Likewise, now scram," you said and moved forward.
"Make me, you little--" he started and you punched him in the face quickly, surprising everyone.
"Oh!" Jesper said and laughed as he quickly walked down the stairs with Inej.
You rubbed your hand a little as he walked closer. "All right," he said with a chuckle and looked at two men, "Get him out of here--better yet, throw him."
The two men grabbed the man and dragged him away. Inej smirked as she turned to you, "Not bad."
Jesper grinned as he sat on the same seat the man did, "Nice right hook."
"Thank you," you said as you poured them a drink. You looked up to the stair case at looked at Kaz a little nervously but he turned and continued up the stairs.
--
As the night continued, one of the guys came up to you, "Boss wants to see you," he said and walked away. You glanced at Luke and he nodded, "I got it covered."
"Thanks," you said and walked around the bar. You walked to the stairs and up to the second floor. You walked to the door and got in as you knocked.
You closed the door and walked toward the office area where you saw Kaz was sitting behind his desk, looing through papers. "You wanted to see me?" you asked.
He glanced toward you and then back at the papers. "How's your hand?"
You glanced at your hand and then at him, "It's fine. Doesn't hurt."
Kaz didn't look at you but he wasn't looking at the papers anymore, "Take a break for tonight. Get some rest."
You frowned a little, "I thought I would cover for Luke this evening and let him--"
"You can cover for him some other time," he said and glanced toward you before at the papers, "Get some rest. I'll see you tomorrow morning."
You frowned and glanced over your shoulder at the door to the hall and then back at him. "Okay... uh, I should tell him," you said.
"I'm sure Joe told him right now," he said without looking at you.
You stared at him for a moment with a small frown and then nodded, "Right... okay..." You let out a soft breath as you moved out of the office but then stepped back in. "So, I'm not in trouble?"
Kaz placed the papers down as he lifted his head to look at you. "For what?" he asked.
"For punching a customer," you said.
"Did he deserve it?" he asked you. You nodded, "Yes."
"Then no," he said, "You're not in trouble. Good night."
You nodded slowly as you backed out, "Good night," you said softly and turned to go to your room.
You walked inside and pulled the rings Jesper gifted you a few days ago, and put them on the desk. You frowned when you saw a single rose on the desk. You lifted it and moved your eyes to the wall in front of you.
Tumblr media
There was a painting resting on the wall, and you looked closer to it in amazement, recognizing it was an oil painting.
And from the glimpse you saw, it was the same one you saw Kaz covering up with a sheet.
You tilted your head a little as you couldn't help but smile softly at the thought that maybe he got you that painting and hung it up on the wall.
You placed the rose on the desk gently and walked out. You walked to the office and cleared your throat to get his attention.
Which you did.
"Thank you," you said softly and gave him a smile, "For the painting."
His expression didn't change, "What painting?"
You nodded, knowing he wasn't going to admit anything. You took a step back to get back to your room, and smiled again, "And for the rose. Don't worry, I won't tell."
You gave him one last smile and turned, walking out from his sight and to your room.
Kaz watched you until you were no longer in sight. What am I doing? he thought as he looked down at his gloved hands.

CHAPTER 1
LILITH
The starless night sky, the waves breaking on the rocks, the muffled sounds coming from the city, the briny autumn air surrounded her, it happened before she could even think of enjoying the moment a voice broke the night silence, the girl jumped to her feet, knives drawn, eyes locked on the darkness in front of her as her legs moved independently, silent movements, invisible to the inexperienced eyes allowed her to move closer to the noise source, as she’d expected a crowd had formed on the pier of the fourth harbour. Their guns reflected the dim street lamps’ light, red rubies shone under the moonlight, “This wasn’t the deal.” said a merchant’s voice, “The deal was you’d bring me fresh meat and I’d set you free.” Pekka Rollins’ hoarse voice echoed in her ears, she watched and studied the scene in front of her, hidden by the shadows, disgusted at the ideas of even more lives ruined by Pekka Rollins.
The smell of blood came before she could even realize what was going on, the pier’s shadows hid her making her even more dangerous than in the daylight, her knives handles now an extension to her hands, her leather gloves blood stained, her legs silents and fast followed a now too familiar pattern, the men surrounded her, guns at her head ready to fire, the girl’s eyes studied the scene as in a book, reviewing every possible outcome, she was surrounded, the men much bigger than her, she gripped the handles of her knives, the material seemed to heat up under the pressure, the lights of the street lamps trembled ready to go out at any given moment, the salty air now corrupted by the smell of blood and gunpowder. “I don’t want to kill you Mrak.” Said the merchant stopping in front of the brunette, a grin forming on his face studying her. “I wish I could say the same.” The girl replied wiping blood from her cheek with the back of her hand, her eyes full of anger, hatred, revenge, but her face was impassive, the scar on her righ cheek illuminated by the lamp post, her lips and jaw tight, her feet and hands ready to attack or defend, the faded tattoo of Emerald Palace was still too visible on her left forearm. “I thought you’d be happy to hear another slaver dead.” The man continued staring at her, “Wasn’t it one of them who brought you here? Who ruined your life?” the brunette knew if she’d attacked the rest of the Dime Lions would open fire to save their leader, “My life was over before I even got to Ketterdam.” she said closing her fists and inhaling before attacking, their moves were draw in her brain like the project of a house on paper, predictable and obvious, during each fight the Dime Lions’d forgot they had guns in their hands, finding themselves fighting hand to hand with their rivals.
The girl’s eyes became watery, a sudden burning sensation invaded her right forearm, the gray sleeve darkened, soaked in blood, but before she could assimilate what happened, the dagger disappeared from her hand finding a new home in the skull of one of the men surrounding her, some had fled, others were on the ground gasping for air or passed out. Her eyes found Pekka Rollins’, her face covered in blood, her left hand gripping her right arm, “Next time I won’t let you free.” said the man turning on his heels and disappearing into the shadows of the pier, the girl inhaled trying not to think about the pain in her arm, the burning had given way to cold and numbness, the brunette put her knives back in their places before walking back towards the Barrel.
Ketterdam was the place to go if you wanted to disappear, a city run by criminals, thieves, crooks, murderers; a city where authorities were nearly as corrupted, if not more, than the citizens; tourists from all over the world came to live without rules, to enjoy the freedom of a city without laws, to distract themselves from the problems of their daily lives, with their money, clean clothes, hot food on the table, a roof over their heads, a warm comfortable bed to sleep in after a tiring day, hot water always at the ready for a relaxing bath; the more fortunate citizens, the merchants, the Council members, the owners of the most famous clubs in the city lived in safe, warm, private houses; all the others, on the contrary, lived from day to day, hoping and praying to the Saints that they’d have enough to be able to afford a common room, a hot meal, or to be able to repay their debts.
The smell of the Barrel invaded her nostrils as she went from roof to roof trying not to be seen, the window to his office was open, a sign that he was waiting for Inej, the girl knew she shoulnd’t have gone in but with her arm injured she wouldn’t be able to open her bedroom window, and entering the front door was out the question. She climbed over to the window and nimbly entered the room, the inexperienced ear would never notice the air shift caused by the girl, but Kaz Brekker wasn’t inexperienced, not when it came to his investments. “I will not do business with a criminal.” The unknown voice filled the room, forcing her to hide in the shadows, her steps were silent, her breath inaudible, “You will find no honest man in Ketterdam.” Kaz replied before dismissing the man and closing the door behind him, “You can come out.” he simply said going back to studying the papers on the desk, the girl headed to the door, her arm hidden behind her back, her face covered in blood, her steps trembling but still too silent and proud, she barely got to reach the doorknob that his cane stopped her, the girl’s eyes fixed on the door, her hand firm on the doorknob, “What do you have for me?” the boy said as he sat down at his desk, the cane resting on his knee in of him staring at her, the crow’s eyes on the handle seemed to study her. “Pekka Rollins has bought other kids.” The boy’s face was stern, unreadable, fixed on the brunette in front of him, “He killed the slaver at Fourth Harbour.” the girl explained. “Okay.” His voice was hollow, the voice of someone who had decided to turn off their emotions, the same voice used by the girl.
The cut on her forearm was less serious than she had imagined, the help of a healer would have fastened the recovery but she didn’t have the money nor the time to find one, she tightened the bandage on the wound and left her room heading towards the bar counter, “Lilith, came to bring me luck?” Jesper’s cheery voice woke her up from the trance she was in, the Zemeni boy motioned for her to sit next to him at the poker table.
The Crow Club was full of tourists and non, whoever was in the Barrel and wanted to tempt fate was there, the girl noticed Rotty and Specht busy gambling away the last few coins they had left, Big Bolliger greeted her from the door before kicking out yet another cheater, Anika stared at her from the counter, while Jesper looked at her with a smile, letting her slip in next to him. “SO how much did you lose?” The girl asked as she sat down and studied the table, “Your lack of confidence hurts me Lilith.” said Jesper betting the rest of his Kruge on the upcoming hand, “Just saying if you don’t pay your debts, Per Haskell won’t kick out only you, and I really like my room.” explained the girl pulling out her daggers and cleaning them, she could feel his gaze on her, he was studying her, the bandage on her harm, a bandage that wasn’t there just a few minutes before, but as soon as she looked up he was gone, the office door closed at the top of the stairs.

i'll be the reason you repent
❀ Premise: You are the Sun Summoner, originating from Noyvi Zem. You've come into your power outside of the Darkling, and without his help, are determined to tear down the fold. He, of course, tries to get in the way. ❀ Pairing: Fem!Sun Summoner!Reader x The Darkling ❀ Word Count: 2,744 ❀ Content Warning: ANGST, Implied Past/Current SA, Political Machinations, Yelling, Love/Hate but it's mostly Hate
The reports were wrong about many things. You arrived at the little palace with a handful of “servants” and one guard. The army you were supposed to have brought with you made no appearance. The large carriages filled with gifts for the king and queen were also a lie. As were the details of the carriage you rode in. It was simple, adorned with some decorative flowers- mainly sunflowers and daisies- and pulled by a sturdy horse.
The only thing accurate about the reports were your reason for travel and what you were wearing. The dress you chose for travel was one you wore often, so the color faded from frequent washing. It was a summer dress, a bumblebee yellow color embroidered with white and yellow flowers. The A-line silhouette was considered mildly scandalous by those in Ravka’s court, as was the obvious boning beneath it. Still, it was not an entirely sleeveless gown- the puffy sleeves fell right at your elbows. Its length was more than adequate, falling at just above your ankles.
In addition to the dress, you wore jewelry signifying your power. A large sun pendant fell right at your collarbone, while sun-shaped cuffs adorned your wrists. You had gold anklets with small suns layered on top of your socks.
You step out of the carriage to greet the man you know is your counterpart.
“General Kirigan, it is an honor,” You say, bowing your head. He is more or less how you imagined him, how you dreamed of him. Tall, handsome- brooding. Looking at you with eyes full of lust and something else, something much more sinister.
“Sun Summoner,” He replies, returning the gesture. It isn’t lost on him that you have refused to adhere to any of Ravka’s customs, that you have outright rejected the safety of a kefta. You dress the way an Otkazat'sya princess may dress.
“Please, everyone calls me Y/N” You retort.
“I was told you come bearing gifts.” He states, clearly implying they were expecting something more.
“I have. Though I suppose my biggest gift to Ravka is yet to come.” You turn your back on him, retrieving the packages wrapped in plain paper you had prepared.
“The King would like to speak with you,” He says, purposefully letting his eyes linger on you for more than you would consider comfortable.
“No one wants to keep a King waiting, but I usually help my friends unpack when we arrive somewhere new.” You reply, gesturing to the people currently trying to find where to store your carriage and horse.
“Your friends?” He questions.
“The people who follow me tend to like me. Those who come with me I trust with my life. Why would I not consider them my friends? Or do you disapprove of befriending the common folk?” You question, stepping towards him.
“Come. The King will see you now,” He ignores your questioning and holds out his arm.
You take it.
XXXXX
The meeting with the King goes about as well as you expected it to. He asked why you were here, you laid out your intention to destroy the fold, and he attempted to offer the hand of one of his children as payment. You politely refused, stating that an alliance with the nobility of Shu Han would be much more lucrative since your country does not have nobility. The King visibly does not take kindly to your rejection but maintains his composure enough to say that he would consider it.
“Not many would turn down the chance to marry a Prince,” The Darkling comments once you’ve left the room. He takes your arm in his as he speaks. You have a feeling this man will be impossible to shake.
“Royal life comes with a lot of rules and restrictions that I’d rather not conform to.” You reply, playing with your left cufflink.
“You think an amplifier will be enough to bring down the fold?” He asks.
“No. But I think a third one should be enough,” You state.
The expression on his face changes, “Third?” He’s looking at you like he’s never seen anyone so beautiful in his life.
“I’m told multiple zowa were lost when the fold was created. I assume their power was in some way used in its creation. I will need to be incredibly powerful in order to bring it down.” You reply.
“Why do you want to destroy it?” He questions.
“Why don’t you?” You counter.
It’s not visible on his face, but you know you’ve pissed him off. You feel his grip around your arm tighten. You counter by digging your nails into his arm.
“Where will I be staying?” You ask, pretending the power play between the two of you isn’t already in full swing.
“I will escort you to your room. It’s a few doors down from mine,” He replies. It’s a threat.
“I hope you enjoy your time at the little palace,” He says as you arrive.
“I will certainly try to enjoy it,” You reply, removing your nails from his arm and snaking out of his grasp.
He pretends you do not exist as he walks down the hall, but you know you’ve gotten under his skin.
XXXXX
A ball is put together rather quickly to celebrate your arrival, occurring only a week since you’d first set foot in the palace. You glance over the kefta that Genya has brought you.
“It’s a gift. From the General.” She says with a small smile.
“Is he trying to court me?” You ask, closely examining the gown. These are his colors, of course. To show you as his possession. The longer you’ve been here, the more possessive he’s become, regardless of your lack of real interest in the man. You’re divine counterparts, sure. That doesn’t necessarily mean you like him, let alone love him. You could, maybe. If he ever saw the forest for the trees.
“How offended would he be if I didn’t wear it?” You say, tracing your fingers over the delicate embroidery.
“No more than he usually is in your presence” She states, waiting impatiently by the door.
“I will wear it,” You state, picking up only the overcoat, “Incorrectly.”
“Y/N” Genya warns.
“I will wear something underneath it.” You say, dismissively, “Don’t you have to help the queen get ready?”
She, as pretty as she is, does not have the same ability to keep her emotions fully hidden that the Darkling possesses. You see two emotions flash across her face- one you expected, one you didn’t. And it’s the one you didn’t that has you concerned.
“Did something happen?” You ask, setting the kefta overcoat back down. “Does she hurt you?”
“No.” She replies, looking away from you.
“But someone else does.” You conclude, watching as she tries to hide her shaky hands.
You stare at each other in silence.
“You could always come with me,” You suggest. You are no longer going to be wearing any piece of that kefta.
“That would just make the king angrier than he already is,” Genya states. She leaves without another word.
XXXXX
The ball starts beautifully. You light up the room with your gift, dazzling the Ravkan Otkazat'sya and mildly amusing the emissaries from other countries who have already seen you do this multiple times. You get a round of applause before quickly removing yourself from the center of attention. You have other business here.
“Gerel, I didn’t expect to see you here,” You say, greeting the Shu Han emissary. “Are relations with the Ravkans improving?”
The woman rolls her eyes, setting aside her glass of wine, “As if you don’t already know.”
“How is my favorite princess doing?” You ask, resting your hand on her wrist. “Still dreaming of a normal life?”
“Will she still have it with the idea you put in that man’s head?” Gerel retorts.
“She should, in the end. I can’t promise her life will be normal right now, but it will be in the future.” You reply.
“She is counting on you, you know. She trusts you,” The woman replies.
“I know. There are a lot of other people counting on me. How are the zowa in your country?” You ask.
“Conditions have improved.” She says, noncommittal.
You assume this means that they’ve started to crack down on the experimentation, though some persist.
“I’m glad.” You say, spotting the Bastard of the Barrel across the room. “If you excuse me,”
He is out of place here, as he is in most places that aren’t made of filth. Still, you appreciate the familiar if not entirely friendly face. You make no effort to reach out to him, knowing better than that.
“Mr. Brekker.” You greet. Unlike Gerel, you really didn’t expect him to be here. There’s no reason for him to be here.
“Sun Summoner,” He replies.
“What brings you to the little palace?” You ask. What the fuck are you doing here, is what you mean.
“Business. Something you might be able to help with,” Kaz responds, leaning against his cane. Someone hired me to kidnap you, not knowing we know each other.
“Oh, I’d be delighted to. Could we discuss it another night? I don’t often get the chance to enjoy myself,” You explain. I’ll go along with it but now’s not a good time.
“I’ll be in Ravka for a few days. Just let me know when you’re available.” He states. I have time. Let me know when.
“Of course.” You reply, “Please try to enjoy yourself. I know you don’t get the chance to come to things like this often.”
“I’ll try,” He says with a smirk. He doesn’t mean it.
You are about to make your way to your friend, the Noyvi Zem emissary when you are stopped by a familiar brooding figure.
“General Kirigan.” You greet, politely.
“Y/N,” He states, not moving.
“Did you want something?” You question.
“The dancing is about to begin. Follow me.” He commands. You follow, reluctantly. You were hoping to get out of dancing.
You bow towards one another, and he takes your hand.
“Needed to talk to me alone?” You posit.
“We’re not alone.” He dismisses.
“I think we’re both aware of that. But you wanted to talk. So. Talk.” You reply, focusing more on the waltz than whatever’s coming out of his mouth.
“Have you noticed the people leering at you all night?” He questions.
“I try to ignore them.” You state, trying to ignore the fact he nearly stepped on your toes.
“They’re jealous of your power.” He muses.
“And why is that important?”
“Because they will kill you for it.” He states as if it will happen. As if it has already happened.
“And what must I do so that they don’t kill me?” You retort.
“I think you know the answer to that.”
“You seek to destroy these people?” You ask, purposefully stepping on his foot as you dance.
“Only to protect our people.” The Darkling responds, tightening his grip around your waist.
“And was the fold to protect our people, too?” You press, digging your nails into his back.
“You believe there was a better option? They would have killed me out of fear.”
“And so you kill them out of fear for what they would do to us. Do you not see the flaw in that logic?” You ask.
“There is no flaw in killing those who seek to harm you.” He retorts.
“But not all of them seek to harm us. You seek genocide, General. That does not win hearts and minds.” You say, letting him twirl you.
"I am not trying to win hearts and minds," He replies, pulling you in.
“Do you care only for the zowa who support you? Have you no desire to win over the rest?” You challenge, gazing into his eyes. Given how Genya has been treated, you doubt he even cares for those zowa.
“The Grisha will come to my side when they see my strength. They will follow me.” He retorts. The choice of words is deliberate. The Grisha are his.
“Only because you will make them. Fear does not breed loyalty. It is not a long-term tool for power and control. Because one day, people will start asking why they are so afraid. As you already have.” You tell him.
The song ends, but your dance isn't over. He spins you away from him so you can bow toward each other. He comes back to your side once the formalities are over, his hand resting on the small of your back.
He will not leave your side for the rest of the night. Any attempt you make at trying to dance with another man is immediately shot down by him. No one wants to cross him, even if they want to dance with you.
But you are not a possession. And you will not be treated like one. You deliberately ask the one person in the room he cannot hold power over to dance, and he accepts. The ball continues, but the Darkling has enough of your shenanigans.
"Come. We have much to plan for tomorrow," He says, practically dragging you away from the party.
You walk in silence up to his office.
As soon as the door closes behind you, you speak.
"I wonder if I frustrate you half as much as you frustrate me."
"You do not know what they are capable of. What they made us do to each other out of fear." He retorts, carrying on the argument from earlier.
"Then why give them more reason to fear you?" You ask. "You could help me destroy the fold. You could bring about an era of peace. Real peace. Not whatever revenge scheme you've concocted from your misery."
"There can be no peace with the Otkazat'sya," He says.
"You are impossible!" You shout at him.
"You are naive," He counters.
"Do you even know anything about me? What I've done for the zowa? Does none of that work mean anything to you," You ask.
"What work have you done? The druskelle will still kill any witch they see. The Shu Han still experiment on our people. None of your political maneuvers have changed anything." He replies, referencing the treaties your government had signed with both nations.
"Do you know why I waited to come here last? Do you know why I made deals with the other countries first?" You question, leaning forward.
He does not respond.
"It was you. You and your army of child soldiers-"
"I am giving them a purpose," He interrupts.
"THEY ARE CHILDREN!" You yell, slamming your fists on the table. "They do not need a purpose."
"Many would be dead if not for me " He tries defending himself.
"Many are dead because of you." She retorts, "More suffer because of you. Do you even know what happens to the girls you give to the queen?" You ask.
"I know what happens," He says with no remorse.
"Then you are more of a monster than I thought you were." You say.
"Someone has to be the villain." He states, quietly.
"That's the worst part about it, Kirigan. You don't have to be the villain. You don't have to do the things you do. But you do them anyway. And that's what makes you a monster." You explain, knocking all the pieces off of the map. "I will find the stag. I will tear down the fold. And if you do anything to stop me, I will not hesitate to kill you."
You feel the wisps of darkness slowly begin to crawl up your body, and you let them. You could easily burn them away, but you will let this man think he can threaten you.
"It doesn't have to be this way. You could rule the world by my side," Kirigan says, approaching you. He reaches out to caress your cheek while the dark tendrils lightly choke you.
"I don't want to rule the world. I want to live in it." You say, before the light from your body engulfs his darkness.
You brush a piece of hair away from his face, as he looks at you with those greedy eyes. "Do not come tomorrow. Do the right thing. The world might not be grateful you did. But I will."
He does not stop you as you leave. And he is not there the next morning when you kill the stag.

Part 1, Part 2, Part 4
Tumblr media
Inej, as the stranger introduced herself, turned out to be part of the Crows, who operated under Kaz Brekker's command. Jess didn't know him, but she'd heard his name dozens of times in the couple of hours she'd spent near the town square.
The guy was a legend among the criminals of Ketterdam, and for some reason she was not surprised that Nina was among his gang. Her passionate nature and love of adventure were bound to lead the Heartrender to something like that.
Jess made good use of her time before they reached the Crow Club, so she managed to get Inej to talk a little and find out details about their activities. The short story about the Crows being involved in the recent events in the Fold and helping Alina made her feel a little more sympathy for them, and judging by the respect shadowed on Inej's face, it was mutual when Jess shared a reciprocal story about helping Alina adapt during her first months in the Little Palace. Her heart was warmed by the pleasant thought that Alina had quietly and peacefully left after the big fight and, as Jess hoped, remained safe.
The memory of her father sent a wave of shivers down her skin, tightly concealed by a black suit that looked more like a man's, but Jess forced herself to clear her mind. In the darkened room with dozens of candles, where there was a cacophony of chatter, laughter, shuffling cards and clinking glasses, her whole body tensed, and her grey eyes scanned the space for nearby exits and guards with a practiced reflex. Inej's smile came out almost modest, but the pride in her eyes was too expressive. Whatever was going on in the Crow Club, that place meant a lot to her and all the other Crows.
Jess straightened in vain to regain the feeling of unshakeable confidence that had left her the moment Baghra had caught her in the bedroom with the story of the Black Heretic and told her to pack her things in a hurry. Everything that had been so dear, so ordered and familiar, had turned to dust, become another shadow, and the new reality still seemed too hostile and unsafe. Jess guessed that the illustrious Kaz Brekker would be a tough, brutal, cold-blooded and damned smart guy as everyone talked about him that way.
What would she offer him in return? What should she even ask him for? Nina was a part of his team, and Jess was definitely not in a position to run anywhere else on her own. She needed some company and support, but the Crows weren't an innocent group of interest. Being an old friend of Nina Zenik wasn't enough to stay with them, and that realization pierced through her, but all despair was instantly displaced when a familiar voice reached her ears.
— Apple pie!
God, Jess had once hated that nickname and had even fought Nina over it a couple of times, but now it sounded like a compliment from heaven. So familiar, in fact, that it brought tears to her eyes for a second.
It wasn't hard to spot Nina at the bar — the bright red hat on her head caught everyone's attention. Jess shortened the distance between them in two great steps, and Nina's warm embrace enveloped her like a fluffy blanket, bringing her joy and relief. Glancing over her friend's shoulder, Jess glimpsed those who were keeping her company — the tall well-built Fjerdan, whose surprise was most noticeable at the moment, and the same couple she'd spotted on the street. A dark skinned guy in a large-checkered jacket standing next to a slightly younger man with exceptionally lively facial expressions and dark hair sticking out amusingly in different directions.
— Am I still dreaming or is it really you? If I am, I hope the next moment a million kruge will fall on me and I'll never have to look at the horribly tasteless suits of these drunks again, — Nina's chirping voice reflected genuine hope, but Jess knew her too well to lose sight of the unease that lurked between the lines. — I'm so glad you finally ran away out of there! How long have you been staying…?
— Ran away? You look too good for someone who has been a prisoner or a hostage. You should have seen how beat up I was when we crossed… — Jesper had the audacity to interrupt the conversation, but quickly cut himself short when Wylan elbowed him lightly in the side with an evident hint. The crowded Crow Club definitely was not the best place to talk about the Fold.
Jess looked around confusedly, trying to find even a single free meter of space, and Inej understood her without a word, gently pulling her to the side and nodding to the left side door. Behind it there was a storeroom with boxes of liquor that stood in almost endless rows, and that's where Jess finally was able to be alone with Nina, having the relief of a semblance of silence.
She could see her friend more closely now, noticing that the years that had passed had added her some beauty and brought certain maturity. Nina was no longer that funny reckless teenager who'd helped her steal Tidemakers' notes or with whom they'd sneaked into the kitchen after lights out when their teachers prohibited them to be at the dinner as a punishment. Jess couldn't wait to talk to her friend about everything that had happened to them in the past few years, but first she had a much more pressing issue to deal with.
— Had Brekker really seen Alina? — she didn't doubt the truth of that statement, but she needed to hear it again to really believe it. Had Kaz seen her father? Had he watched the greedy gleam in the dark eyes of the one with whom she shared blood and power? Jess's gaze ran inquisitively over Nina's face as her palms gripped her shoulders tightly.
— Yes. I swear I was sure he was kidding me, but it was the truth. He snuck into the Little Palace with Inej and Jesper, actually you could have seen them there, during the ceremony.
Jess nodded automatically, hardly giving these words any meaning. When Aleksander stood beside Alina in front of the king and the mass of guests, she was too busy following the tracker Mal and helping Baghra get Alina out of the palace in the safest way possible. Though now she could fully recognize the irony of the situation. She could have escaped even then and ended up in Ketterdam the same way.
— Do you feel something? That connection you had with your father, can you use it again? Everyone says he died in the Fold, but you know that the Darkling is the oldest and the strongest among us. Is that why Baghra sent you here? What happened to her?
Nina was gabbling, caught in apparent excitement, and it made Jess smile fleetly. It was just like the old times.
— Baghra stayed at the Little Palace, but I don't know for how long. We heard the news and she decided we had to play ahead. If my father is alive, he will come for me. For both of us, — the thought of having to kill again for someone else's revenge and pride disgusted her, but the fear of Aleksander's anger was much stronger. — I need to hide for a while. Is Kaz Brekker really as powerful as people bubble on the streets, or should I not expect to sleep peacefully at night under his patronage?
— Kaz is a stubborn cruel weirdo, but he knows his business and he is the smartest man I know. I'm sure he can think of a way to keep you hidden while you're here. He helped me to get Matthias out of jail, even though he doesn't stop poking me about it every time he gets a chance, — Nina rolled her eyes with a chuckle and touched Jess' wrists carefully, making sure not to touch the bare skin near the edge of her jacket. A matter of habit still, no different even after these years. — You could have been a great addition to our team, you know? Any heist would be hundred times easier if we had your shadows at our disposal. But I know it would put you on the trail quickly if anyone outside the Crow Club knew about your abilities.
— Well, I'm still good with knives and hand-to-hand combat. It never hurts to have extra hands, does it? Where can I find Brekker?
— He's locked himself in his office. Opposite door on the right. Maybe I should talk to him first? He always seems indifferent, like he's doing you a favor by listening at all, but you can count on him if you can get him interested.
— You've already done so much for me, Nina. I'm glad you're okay, honestly, I was worried you might have gotten into trouble. Grishas were looking for you after you ran away, my father made sure of that. But now I have to learn to take care of myself, without him or Baghra. I'll find you later, okay? And, Saints, don't call me Apple pie in front of the others, it's outrageous!
Jess laughed briefly and placed a light kiss on Nina's cheek before she slipped out of the storeroom first. The cheerful mood was immediately replaced by the background anxiety, and every step to Kaz Brekker's office seemed long and exhausting, testing her to the limit. The rumors she had heard were enough to know that the Bastard of the Barrel was capable of any cruelty for the right price, and he could easily pass her off for a big sum as the Darkling's daughter or as Grisha with a special talent. He could not be trusted, but Jess had so much fear inside that carrying it alone was utterly unbearable at that moment.
— Jesper, I asked you to be at the door, should I say it in Kaelish or Ravkan so you'll get it sooner?
A harsh bark came from a guy with dark neatly tucked back hair. The sharp cheekbones and dark circles under his eyes from the lack of sleep were the first things Jess managed to notice, stoically holding back the barbed comments. Kaz was literally buried under a mountain of sheets and didn't even deign to look up at the guest, absolutely certain that an orderly tone would suffice.
— Ravkan works fine for me, but I'm surprised the famous Bastard of the Barrel has time to study languages in the midst of constant scheming and eliminating rivals, — her voice remained very formal, scrubbed of any emotions, but there was some amusement dancing in her grey eyes for a second. That only intensified when Kaz Brekker finally looked up, unable to instantly hide his surprise.
— Reception hours are long over. I don't recall seeing you before. How did you get in here?
— Inej brought me. I'm a longtime friend of Nina and I wanted to talk to you about a deal. I need some protection and anonymity, Nina said you were the best candidate in Ketterdam. That you know how to stick to your part of the bargain.
The stranger's businesslike tone didn't fool Kaz. She was clearly desperate or she wouldn't have come directly to him. It was the first time he'd heard of Nina having friends from Ravka, but his first instinct reminded him that she only knew someone in Ravka because of the Little Palace. What were the chances that Grisha came to him so freely? Other people's secret past interested Kaz very little, but he was curious about what he could get in return for his services.
— What about your part? There are many ways to save someone's life and many corresponding risks, — in another life Kaz might have been a great honest merchant who would never miss out on a good deal. But in that life his brain had already begun diligently calculating his options. He thought of the ship's departure schedule and went over the names of loyal Dregs he could have let go as an escort for a while. But his guest's reply threw him off balance, sending a questioning wrench into his eyebrows.
— I want to stay here. At the Crow Club or wherever you all live. You're one of the most dangerous men in Ketterdam, but more importantly, you're astonishingly clever. The closer I am to you, the more chances I have of safe few months. Besides, I missed Nina a lot, we used to be a good team.
That was pure insanity — that's what they both thought at the same time. She assumed Kaz was so powerful and yet did she naively believe that he would let some stranger be in his way every day?
— What will happen next? In a few months? Will you go back to Ravka or go somewhere else to find another fool? I sense a catch before I even know the details.
— People don't seek protection for nothing, Kaz Brekker. You may have forgotten the feeling, but some of us still fear for our lives when someone threatens us. After a while the situation will become clearer and I can either go back to Ravka or escape to Novyi Zem or Shu Han to steer the danger away and keep you out of trouble because of me, — Jess replied more sharply than she had planned and sighed deeply, dabbing her gaze into the left dark corner where shadows appeared for a moment threatening to grow bigger.
It wasn't safe to stay in Ketterdam. If her father remained alive, he would come here, and neither Kaz Brekker nor all the Saints would save her. But she still had the illusion of freedom, the illusion of choice, and she clung to it as best as she could. Her palm dipped into the deep pocket of her jacket, and the next moment Jess carefully set down an exquisite necklace of weighty emeralds braided on a gold chain on the table in front of Kaz. The yearning squeezed her heart at the memory of how Aleksander had given it to her two years ago.
— It is an old relic from a previous royal dynasty. From the Little Palace, if you care for details. You can sell it for about three hundred thousand kruge if you find some good trader. Would that be a decent payment for you? — Jess was tormented by the feeling that she was selling herself at that moment. As well as her attachment to her father, her hope and her fond memories. There was a grim determination on her face, and she knew she wasn't going to leave that place without Brekker's consent. Unfortunately, he understood that, too.
— You said you and Nina were a team. What can you do? You don't look like a Heartrender.
— Name at least three other Heartrenders, besides Nina, that you know.
— You are too straightforward. Inferni? — Kaz leaned back in his chair more relaxed and twirled the necklace thoughtfully in his gloved palm. He wished he had been able to bring the trophy back from the Little Palace, so now he was pleased to see such a piece. Especially with such a high value, that he got for nothing in essence.
— Keep guessing, Kaz Brekker, but know that I prefer not to use my powers. They will lead me into troubles. But I can fight and use knives. I can help you with your dirty business so I don't have to sit here with boredom though your team looks pretty packed as it is. How'd you get that big guy, by the way? He looks like a Fjerdan and he's a long way from home then.
— Nina brought him in and I was quite satisfied with his service. Perhaps it will be the same with you.
Kaz's lips curved slightly in an approving smile, and he stood up, showing that they had come to some conclusion after all.
— I'll think about what you can do for the team. There's a spare room on the third floor at the end of the hallway in the Slat, near Inej's. Welcome to Ketterdam, …?
— Oh, it's Jess, sorry, — she caught her breath and finally introduced herself with a playful curtsey. It was hard for her to stop the rush of joy, as now she was given a chance to have some real peace and a possible occupation beyond her endless paranoia. — You won't regret it, I promise.

Darkness and Light - Darkling
Darkling x Sun Summoner!Fem!reader/OC
This is to make up for all the lost time! There is no use of a name, so it can be read as an original female character or as a female reader.
Let me know what you think of this one! This is my first time writing the Darkling so I'm nervous.
Warning: My shitty writing, food, mentions of arguing, fire, fighting, canon level violence (not too graphic), the cut being used, mentions of being sick, pregnancy.
If anyone wants to be tagged in any of my continuous daydreaming, they can let me know!
Tumblr media
Darkness and light do not fit together. Shadows are scared by the light. Enough of shadows can cover the light, like her soul will be if she stays with him.
These were the words that traveled everyday in the halls of the Little Palace.
-
The sun was sinking into the river, relieving the burning water of its agony to rest for the night. Far away from the ice cold lands of Fjerda, in the shadow-fold separated land of Ravka, she was just about finished buying some ingredients needed for dinner. Aleksander had demanded to come along with, but she insisted on having some time for herself, ignoring his growing over protective efforts each day. She was a sun summoner after all, she knew how to defend herself.
He had not left her side for the past few days, taking her along for meetings and glaring at anyone who dares come close to her. In the night, he held her tighter, mindful not to hurt her, but in a protective stance. She was finally able to coax her husband to attend to an urgent task, slipping away for a while as soon as he left. She appreciated his protectiveness, but she was getting frustrated and did not have the heart to tell him of her misery, even if the pout formed on his face would be a sight to see. He was already taking care of her when she was sick and did not want him to think she was taking it for granted. Despite their arguments on the matter, his stubbornness won and she suspected their loyal guards were already following her from a distance.
Inspecting a tomato, she noticed a tall and broad presence standing next to her and she made way for them to complete their task. Soon, she moved away to inspect another vegetable but noticed the figure from the corner of her eyes. Were they standing closer than before?
She was prepared to use her powers if needed, but was not wishing to as it was causing more and more of an effort to use them for longer periods. Aleksander had zipped his lips on why that was the cause, but her symptoms supported the claim of it being the flu.
The person looked Fjerdan, with the tall build and broad shoulders, but she wasn’t quite sure and still keeping a mindful watch, she slowly started backing away, sure they were following her. They had noticed though, and their hands were moving in a Grisha movement discreetly. Her eyes grew wide at realizing it was an unfamiliar Inferni, and they were about to attack her. She successfully evaded the first attack, and tried to call the light with blood pounding in her head, adrenaline filling her body. Before she could respond, however, she heard the slashing whoosh of the cut being released and could only watch frozen as their body sliced in two.
She looked over her shoulder, seeing Ivan trying to calm her heartbeat, another Heartrender trying to fight the few people advancing towards them. But in the midst of it all, stood her husband, calling upon his shadows near her, to hide her from all the chaos. His eyes suddenly grew wide, looking over her shoulder and she ducked just in time to evade a sword blow. With an adrenaline filled instinct, she blinded the attacker and kicked them for good measure, rushing towards her husband when she was done. The screams of the battle became distant as she questioned her lover about the situation.
He grasped her hands, and silenced her with a quick kiss, ushered her body towards Ivan, eyes pleading not to fight his judgment when he saw her mouth opening. She struggled against Ivan, pleading with him to let her be with him, to not leave him alone in the center of an ambush. Her kicking and screaming was to no avail and eventually Ivan had to slow her heart down enough for her to faint, so he could safely carry her to the place his general had requested.
The sun summoner felt her world spinning, and felt arms catching her before she could fall. Her last words were a curse for Ivan, mixed with another sound of protest. Of course, she couldn’t fight the heartrender's effects and succumbed to the darkness, praying to the saints to keep her husband safe.
-
The exhaustion of the day, which felt like a week, had taken a toll on her and she awoke the next day, panicking when she didn’t recognise her surroundings. She rushed out of the bed with shaky legs, determined to find her whereabouts and her husband. Her world was still spinning but she shook her head to get rid of that and all the negative thoughts that danced in her head. She vaguely remembered a battle, and Aleksander and his request. She had to get to him and help.
The sun hit her face as soon as she opened the door and her hands instinctively went to her eyes, shielding herself. If he was here, he would’ve made a joke about her being the sun summoner and hiding from the sun. His laughing face brought tears to her eyes and she rushed even faster, ignoring the burning sun hitting her foot, urging her to halt.
-
Aleksander sighed as his army finished arresting everyone that was left alive, though his burning anger was on the verge of exploding and he was on the verge of slicing each of them in half. They don’t get to hurt his wife and be left alive. But he was supposed to be a diplomatic person and with the information he gets out of these people, can help him get more information on why they were planning to capture her.
But right now, he needs to get to his love.
-
As soon as he heard the word of his guards, he called Ivan and asked her to bring her to one of the safe houses they had built over the years. She was perfectly capable of defending herself but having been sick for a few days, she had not regained her full strength and shouldn’t be draining herself by using the small science even more.
He set apart the anger cursing through him, which was slowly being overtaken by pure fear. He threw away the negative thoughts and all the what ifs. He will get to his wife. She is safe. Guards are already there.
Thank the saints, he reached in time. He did not get a moment to imagine what might have happened if he was late, or of anything else. He greeted her as quickly as he could in the midst of a battle and ushered her towards Ivan, pleading for her to be safe. Relief swept through him when she was finally away from the chaos and he went to help his fellow Grisha.
He left someone in charge of interrogating them, not wasting another moment to rush to his wife. He was led to her room by Ivan and the sight he saw made him sigh happily, she was sleeping and she was safe. He kissed her forehead, “Never scare me like that again, milaya,” and left the room so she could get her much needed rest.
The news he heard from Ivan made him forget all his wounds.
-
The grand doors to the palace-like place opened but this time she was ready with a ball of light, its fate deciding on the person walking through those doors. The fate was for the ball to die, as none other than Aleksander walked through the doors, freezing as soon as he saw her. His steps faltered, and he stopped, contemplating if he should go to her or not. This choice was made for him by his wife, who ran in full speed towards him, colliding in his arms and kissing him deeply. Black kefta kissed another, reuniting the lovers after the almost heart attack of the ambush.
They broke apart for much needed oxygen, but did not leave each other's arms. Aleksander buried his nose in her hair, while she hid her face in his chest, smiling, both muttering, “You’re safe.”
She sprang apart suddenly, looking him up and down and he understood, “I’m unharmed, milaya.”
Seeing as she was about to question, he continued, “I’ll tell you everything, but can we sit first?” He could read her mind.
She nodded and he gently set her, like a raindrop that glides on a leaf. She lied down, and immediately put her head in his lap, burying her face in his stomach. Their hands were intertwined in a way and appeared as if they were one. She could hear his heart beating out of his chest and her own heart matched that rhythm. After a moment of peace, he began.
“I received a letter earlier. The Fjerdan spies had informed them of your weakness and insistence to go out on your own. It was a planned ambush. They were after us.”
“But there was an Inferni…” she said, confused.
“Those were some who abandoned the war effort and seeked refuge in Fjerda. It was agreed in exchange for them spying in the Little Palace. They were turning against their own people.”
She gasped. “They could’ve chosen not to fight, we gave them a choice.”
“They did not agree with our efforts.”
“I’m sorry, Sasha. I shouldn’t have ran.”
“No, it was my fault too. I shouldn’t have been forcing you to stay.”
-
Moments of peace were what they longed for. With their duties for their people, and dealing with the king, spared them little time for each other. Still their deep love made their marriage work into an example which could be written in romance novels.
Hand in hand, laughing, they were taking a stroll. They had decided to stay for a few days and let other people deal with the issues. It was their sanctuary, untouched by the stress of work, war and the rebellion across the fold.
She noticed the surroundings, having not given them a second thought before, “This could be a beautiful place to live, Aleksander.”
He agreed, “A perfect place for us…and our little miracle.”
-
He hesitated. They had talked of kids, but it was more of a one day situation. When Ivan had told him the news, Aleksander was overjoyed, and had personally decided to kill all those alive for trying to hurt his family. When that was settled, he grew worried, Would he be a good father? Would their kid love him if they found out he made the shadow fold? Would they still love him when they find out about the people he has killed?
His worries were taken away by the sound of the door opening and his wife’s silhouette.
-
Her eyebrows furrowed, “Our what?”
“You know what.”
“Don’t you think if it was, I would be the one to tell you, not the other way round?”
“Heartrenders, milaya.”
She gasped. A heartrender could detect the heartbeat of the little kid residing in her belly. If a heartrender says so, there is a minute chance that they would be wrong. Her hands instinctively went to her stomach and were met with her husbands’. She looked at him, teary eyed, “We’re going to be parents?”
“We’re going to be parents,” his words sounded a little distracted, he was frowning. She noticed and tried to calm his worries, “If they are anything like me, they will love their father because of everything he has done for us and his people.”
He chuckled. She knew him so well.
“I hope they are just like their mother.”
She shook her head, “I hope they are a perfect blend of us both.”
Aleksander pulled her closer by her waist, burying his face in her neck, “I love you, milaya.”
“I love you too, sweet love.”
-
Only a few words echoed with their reality.
Once together, darkness and light are a force that can destroy countless worlds.
They compliment one another and are forever content as long as they are together.

I actually am thinking of it as a prologue for a Kaz Brekker x reader fic (with the same name) I have plans for (he may be slightly OOC...and I'll try to keep it gender neutral, but no plans just yet), but this can also be read as a solo work!
I'm thinking to begin working on it after I finish rewriting my old fic, but who knows!

Imagine that the Darkling had just caused the death of his own mother, and he needed to look for you once more
Tumblr media
Note:
Purely based on s2 of the Shadow and Bone Netflix series, so some lore might be incorrect
"We've used the last of Baghra's remains for the others," the Darkling's Alkemi informed him, but he remained in his lonely despair in a mind unhinged. He needed a break from all of this planning to expand the Fold and consume the whole of Ravka in his darkness - he needed,
"The Wanderer," he murmured under his breath as his eyes darkened with a new way to beat this grief festering within him.
"Vladim, tell everyone to make use of their new Amplifiers. I'm going to scout ahead for some time," the Darkling pushed himself off his chair and began to march out of his own encampment.
"But General, why can't you just let the others do it for you?" his Alkemi raised a brow.
"That's none of your concern," the Darkling turned back at him, eyes glaring into his very soul while the corners of his camp turned darker. "Do as I say and speak nothing of it?" He ordered again through gritted teeth. The Alkemi pressed his lips hard against each other and nodded.
The Darkling mounted his horse and wasted no time astriding North, knowing what he needed was somewhere in the Fjerdan borders, the last time he had heard of her.
You were knee deep in a river with a ceramic vase in your hand. As you dipped it into the cold yet calm, icy river to collect the cold waters, you carefully walked your way out of river. Looking around your surroundings first to ensure that no one was looking, you slowly heated the vase with your own fire.
"Not very discreet now, aren't we?" A familiar voice suddenly called out from within the darkness of the forest ahead of you.
"Who's there?" You frowned and clenched your fists tight, though you already had an idea whose voice it belonged to.
"Y/n, has it really been that long since we last saw each other?" The Darkling calmly sauntered out of the shadows of the trees, with both his hands clasped behind his back.
"Its you. How long has it been? Half a century, I'd bet," you moved toward him and shoved your vase into his hands.
"Do you not know who I am?" He turned to you with a cold tone, but you've been living in the Fjerdan mountains long enough to know that he was just playing around with you.
"Whatever identity you've taken this time, Aleksander, I don't care. Just don't bother me with your propaganda," and both of you began to walk towards your modest cabin made of wood and steel, blanketed in a thick layer of snow.
"Anyway, what brings you here? This place isn't exactly friendly to Grisha. And I've heard that you're not really popular in Ravka either," you opened the door and led him in first. Just as he was about to sit on your favourite spot and in your living room with his ridiculously massive fur coat, you forced it out of him, which he complied with a light, but bittersweet smile.
The Darkling was usually broody, but you knew that something was genuinely upsetting him.
"How about we sit by the fireplace while I make some tea, then? Just like old times," you offered.
"I'm willing to sit by the fireplace, but I do not wish to drink your horrible tea," he only said as he looked around your plain house. You nodded and went to the kitchen, still within earshot of what your guest would say.
"I didn't imagine that you would live someplace so... small, Little Saint," he remarked on the lack of decorations in your house. "Then again, you're the one who's lesser in ambition between us two,".
"You don't understand, Aleksander. Not everyone lives in your Little Palace, under the riches of the kings that betrayed our own kind," you brought two mugs of hot drinks to the fireplace and settled down slowly next to him, passing one of them to him.
"I told you, I don't want your tea," he groaned.
"Its hot cocoa. And stop complaining like a child," you rolled your eyes.
Cautiously, he accepted it and took a few sips, before he placed it down next to him.
"Y/n, there's something I must tell you," he began.
You didn't answer, but your silence beckoned him to continue talking.
"That is... I wish you could have accepted the title of Saint, y/n. If you had been at the Little Palace with me from the start, you could have kept me in check," he choked out his words.
"I don't think old friends could have changed you. You've turned from the path we used to walk together hundreds of years ago,".
"But with you there, you could have at least - burnt some sense into me, like you've always done," he hissed as his eyes glared into fireplace. "You could have...," he breathed, then your living room began to darken with his shadow.
"Could have what?".
"You could have saved me from killing my own mother," his voice trembled as the confession took place.
"What?" You resigned your comfort in his presence and began to crawl backwards and away from him.
"Its true. I killed my mother-,".
"How could you do that to Baghra?!" You shot upwards, now fully standing and prepared to summon your wildfire to protect yourself.
Had the Darkling came to you to destroy every reminder of his past? Both of you had been comrades since you were children - you were his first friend, follower and soldier. If he could kill Baghra - the very person who birthed him and stood by his side for centuries, then what of you?
"No, no, don't be scared, y/n!" He held his hands out, expression contorted in fear - but not fear of you.
You summoned a sphere of concentrated fire, but then, suddenly the shadow around you began to form a beast of more than 8 feet tall, barely able to fit into your own cabin. The beast brushed past the Darkling and stretched out its dark tentacles toward you, prepared to decapitate you - and you recognised it from Baghra's old stories, that it was a Nichevo'ya.
Only the Sun Summoner could stun this monster.
You spread out your fire into the Cut, prepared to fight against it.
"NO, don't do it!" The Darkling shouted, but his voice drowned out between you and the monster. You took a deep breath, and as the Nichevo'ya stretched its hands towards you for the killing blow, you quickly turn defensive and made a shield of fire.
It let out an ear-piercing scream, and you summoned a beam of fire from your core, before you penetrated it into the monster of darkness.
The Nichevo'ya disappeared into the shadows.
Your breathing was ragged and you needed to take a seat, so you clumsily rest yourself against your own wall.
"Was that the thing that killed your mother?" You let out a tired sigh.
"Yes...," the Darkling only stared in silence at you.
"And it's yours?".
"Yes,".
"How dare you use merzost again! Can't you see that its hurt thousands of people once, and now you've gone ahead and did it to your own mother," you exclaimed at him and rushed to open the door. "Get out and never come back. I can't see you like this," turning your gaze away from his scarred face, you tried to control your breathing.
"You know I never meant to, y/n," he began to unbuckle his knees and slowly approached you, as if he feared both your wrath and himself.
"It was always like that, Aleksander. You weren't a monster when all of this obsession to save our kind began. You were our commander - someone I could pour my loyalty for. But now," you turned your head away, holding back your tears. "You're obsessed with hunting down this Sun Summoner of yours and expanding the Fold. Won't that kill all Grisha too?".
The Darkling pursed his lips and studied your face. Slowly turning to finally meet his eyes once, you realised that he was displeased with your opinions, but made no move to silent you with any threat.
"I promised those that follow my command they will be safe," he added in a low voice.
"And I'll bet that they believed it. However, you know that you can't fool me. I was there with you for hundreds of years, heard thousands of your promises to all of Grisha. And you only brought upon them ruin and death with your ambition,".
Your old friend remained silent and only stared at you, wide-eyed and furious. He shifted his gaze to the door you've opened wide to beckon for his leave. Nodding, his legs slowly brought him outside your house. You followed him out as if you're still attracted to his power of command like all those years ago.
"Aleksander," you said once more, and he stopped in his tracks at the middle of forest. "You're not a monster like what everyone has said, especially your Alina Starkov. If she had seen what the previous kings had done to Grisha, the way that people had hunted us down and refused to provide us any food and water - simply because you requested more from the king, she would have done the same despite what she thought of herself," you approached him and cupped his one metallic hand, and his real one in yours.
You flinched a bit at how cold it was.
"I know I can't stop you once you've started your plans, but please," you began to rub your fingers against his knuckles, warming them up with your fire of hearth. "Don't kill the Sun Summoner. You're already lonely enough, and I can't see you ruin yourself for another century again," your breath trembled.
He nodded, and only looked into your bright eyes of hope with his starless ones. You weren't begging him to promise himself to your words, for you knew that your old friend couldn't break his promises to you - and so his silence revealed to you - that even he did not know if he would kill his Sun Summoner or not.
Slowly, you wrapped your arms around his neck and embraced him. The Darkling closed his eyes, held back his breath and only buried his face within your arms.
Something was telling you that this might be the last time you'd see him, and he thought so too.

Dark and Cold Pt.1
Tumblr media
People breathed in the chilling air as you grew closer. As they heard the clanging and ricketing of your carriage, Fear filled their lungs as the small ice crystals that followed you everywhere also stabbed in their breaths. Your entire family had a… cold hearted reputation.
After you stepped from the carriage, the clacking of your boots on the stone caused people to scurry off like rats. You walked to a bar and walked in, the room falling quiet.
You watched them whisper through your snow covered eyelashes. You softly smiled, “Good evening everyone, are we all well?”
A few people responded, you grinned as you walked to the bar and sat at one of the stools, “May I please have a warmed ale with tad lemon?” You asked the bartender politely.
“Of course, Lady Eismantel. Of course.”
You pulled a few coins from your pocket, “Thank you so much.” You sat them and scooted them to exchange for the warm drink. “It’s a rather chilly night, even for my taste.”
The bartender lightly laughed, “It must be freezing then.”
You nodded as you drank the ale, “Do you know how much longer I have til the edge of the fold? I am supposed to be there this time tomorrow.”
“I’d say about five hours in horse back. That’s the only way we travel, miss.”
You nodded, “I see. Well, I am traveling by carriage so I will say about seven, accounting for potential problems.”
You finished the ale, sitting the mug down. “That was lovely. I will be leaving now.” You stood, white cloak falling behind you.
As you left the bar, you began thinking about how you’d been invited to observe a new form of Fold travel. As a Lady of the Eismantel family, you were extremely interested in it as your family grew to respect and prestige by trading and trading over the Fold was an important thing to watch and hopefully adopt. You also were heavily interested in a special someone who was also going to be there: General Kirigan.
You watch from your carriage as the land goes by, a comfortable small smile falling on to your face as you thought about him. Most soon to be wives thought of their soon to be husbands like this or as you were told.
Of course, you’ll only be married if this is any form of success but you were so adamant in your belief that it would that you had already started making the traditional schal der liebe that women in your family had made for their lovers for centuries.
It was a long scarf of delicate material and protective symbols were hand embroidered with threads that had the wife’s hair woven in. It was said to protect the wearer from disease and misery. You knew that he’d love it as you had discussed it with him from when your betrothal had been announced three years ago.
You were rather irritated at first like any normal person would be but in those years, he’d grown to be very special to you. You smiled widely as you pulled the navy blue thread through the shimmering grey fabric, thinking of him wearing it.
By the time you had arrived at the camp where he was going to be, your hands had been pricked by the needle and your fingers were sore from all the layers of embroidery you’d done. You swore to make it the most luxurious one in your family history. You gently put it into a lockable box in your carriage before waiting for the door to open.
As you stepped out, you looked around the camp, noticing people staring at you. You carefully took off your heavy carriage cloak as to not drag it through the mud that covered the ground. Then you heard it, his voice.
“It’s wonderful to see you.” It floated in the air.  You turned to face him. Eyes immediately locking.
“It’s wonderful to see you as well.” he raised his arm for you to loop yours into. You smiled as you did so.
“Was your trip safe? Any trouble?”
“No, it was rather comfortable and easy. I enjoyed it. It’s nice to see the country side ever so often, good for the soul.”
He looked at you, “I am sure you’ll want to settle in and maybe change, then I will walk you through a tour of the camp and show you what you’ve undoubtedly came to see.”
A soft smile remained on your face, “Well I already saw what I personally came for but I do have other business. Is it really going to increase the safety of fold travel?”
“That’s the goal. We’ve designed it by send other single ships in and pulling them back out, looking at what seems to withstand the storms and encounters within the fold.”
You and him talked back and forth about it until he brought you to a tent set up to the left of his.
“This is where you’ll be staying, I will ask that your things be brought to you.”
“Thank you,” you said, releasing yourself from his arm and walking to the folded open door, “I will be seeing you.” You swished your hand, making a few snowflakes appear from your finger tips and float around him. He smiled at you before turning and walking away.
Kirigan walked as the snowflakes slowly melted behind him. His smile dropped as to not cause suspicion as he walked to study the map of the other side and discuss the best place to enter the fold.
He needed this to work for so many reasons. One of the ones high on the list being you.
He loved you so much and to think that this was one of the things that stood away in forever made him angry and he needed to make it to where there we be no chance of losing you.
