Okay but I highkey loved Dr Fate's mental retreat sanctuary for superheros in JLU, because it felt so damn real that sometimes you just want to hide and get away, especially after experiencing something as hardcore as sentencing your race in order to save the planet you care for. Shayera Hol - former Hawkgirl - is grieving, healing and questioning her own fate. She has no idea what to do with her life anymore since her mask broke and she's no longer a solider and a spy. Shayera is finally free to be herself, yet she lost her friends, her lover and her purpose. How often do you see something so raw and real in an animated TV show?
Arthur and Shayera, two fierce, combative bersekers playing chess and an android who was ready to destroy a whole world just sitting there and watching? There's something hilarious about this scene

Funny how what really drove me up the wall about Joanna Constantines character in the Sandman show, was the new pristine whiteness of her coat... No dirt, no wear n tear, no sign it went through stuff... no imperfections whatsoever.
All they had to do was make it look like she fell in a ditch with it once and then tried to scrub it out, but the dirt just wouldnt go away.. or just a few faint traces of specks blood on the sleeves? no.. nothing.
There was way more that bothered me about this version, that made her so distant and unrecognizable if it wasnt for the name.. but the coat... the coat..

The idea that Bruce would actually drug Jason to "condition him" into "not being a murderer" by making him feel terror at his own heartbeat elevating is such a disgusting and absolutely abhorrent thought that I just flat out refuse to accept it as canon.
I'm not even coming at this from a Good Dad!Bruce angle. I just genuinely cannot accept the idea that Bruce would do something so fucking disgusting to any of his children. Especially to the child he is most estranged from who also btw has a traumatic history related to drug addiction and abuse that Bruce is fully aware of and has been aware of since when he first met Jason.
Bruce has never been a perfect father, and I am absolutely down for him even being a bad one. I love complicated and messy relationships in fiction and Bruce being a messy bitch is definitely up there in one of my fave chatacter portrayals of all time.
But my fucking god. Idk what they are going for with this, but I am personally hoping alongside everyone else that this is Zur and not Bruce.
Because if it is Bruce ... holy fucking shit, my guy.
DC canon is already a joke, but dude this is not my Bruce. This is a fucked up imposter wearing Bruce's skin and DC is making a parade out of dragging his corpse around like the world's sickest show pony.

Why is MTGs storyline so similar to comics? Comic storytelling isn't good and superheros aren't interesting as chatacters.
Here's an ongoing theme on this blog - just because you don't personally like something (in this case comics or comic storytelling) doesn't mean your thoughts are universally true for all people.
For example, here are the top ten highest grossing movie franchises of all time: (all comics properties are bolded)
Marvel Cinematic Universe - $27.98 billion
Star Wars - $10.2 billion
Spider-Man - $9.8 billion
Harry Potter - $9.66 billion
James Bond - $7.83 billion
Avengers - $7.76 billion
Batman - $6.84 billion
Fast & The Furious - $6.82 billion
DC Extended Universe - $6.21 billion
X-Men - $6.08 billion
Even accounting for some overlapping revenue, superhero stories have earned over 40 billion dollars at the movies (and that's not getting into any other mediums like television). It's hard to argue that nobody considers superhero stories "good" or "interesting". The data says the exact opposite.

the thing that bothers me is that people really forget that roy is a martial artist; granted hes not connor hawke or on his level but he was raised & trained by dinah fucking lance, and he literally fought dick grayson to a standstill and had fought deathstroke multiple times & survived to tell the tale... and both dc comics & the fans just forgot about it. that bothers me a lot!!!

Names Have Meaning pt. 1
All the members of the Batfamily chose their vigilante persona for a reason. Here are the reasons for a few of them.
Batman
Ok we all know this one. Bruce chose his name after seeing a bat in Wayne Manor. He was afraid of bats as a child and wanted to induce fear into criminals and change his old fear into one of his strengths.
Nightwing
After Dick Grayson decided to go solo after spending years as Batman’s side kick robin he chose the name nightwing. Nightwing is a term for a cop who gets to take their first shift out on the streets without their supervisor. Dick choosing to go by nightwing is him saying he is ready to work solo and can handle it. This is just one way that Dick got his persona. In different comics issues Dick chooses his persona under harder circumstances. In Nightwing: Year One Bruce fires Dick as robin and makes him leave Gotham. Dick feeling lost goes to metropolis where Clark tells him the story of a Kryptonian hero of legend named Nightwing. Dick being inspired by this hero chose to take on his persona.
Red Hood
Jason Todd was killed by the joker when he was robin and was later brought back to life. Before joker was the joker he was red hood for a brief minute. When Jason came back to life he chose the Red Hood persona. The reason he did this is to reference Batman’s failures. Batman’s number one mistake was not being able to stop jack napier from falling into a pit of acid, because it created the joker (in one case cuz there are a bunch of different joker origins). His second biggest mistake was having Jason die on his watch. Jason chose the persona to remind Batman of his mistakes every time he sees him. Low key petty, but honestly goals.
Spoiler
Stephanie Brown had a rough childhood. Her father was a mob boss and gang leader called “Cluemaster”. He would commit horrible crimes that Batman and Robin would try to solve. Stephanie decided to help Batman by leaving clues around Gotham that would help them slove Cluemasters crimes. She chose to go by spoiler because she was spoiling her dad’s crimes and to signify she was proud she took down her dad. Also it her persona signifies that she will countine spoiling villains plans.
(Expect part 2 soon! :) )

Okay but one of those moments in JLU that broke my heart was Capitan Atom fighting Superman and then Superman taking unconscious Atom to the Watchtower.
Clark showed how much of a great leader he is: he deeply understood Nathaniel's patriotic duty and even after they were beating the shit out of each other, he still considered him his brother in arms. Superman's characterisation in JLU is allowing various parts of his characters to shine, not just 'happy-go-lucky-american-boy-scout-with-a-mission' but a complicated man with his own fears, fixations and profound beliefs. Love it.

These three panels from Detective Comics #700 are great representation of what made the 90s Batfamily work so well. There's the obligatory action necessary to a Batman comic book but even in the midst of Bruce being his grim, broody, vengeance-and-the-night self he takes the time to be a good Batdad. It's not that he thinks Robin and Nightwing aren't capable fighters (he knows all too well how good they are since he trained them) but Bruce still makes sure that his kids are heading for cover. Dick being Dick can't resist going a little over the top by using a grenade launcher to blow stuff up. His "Oh yeah!" of smug satisfaction is completely in character.
This sequence is balanced, not too angsty despite the fact that our heroes are in the middle of the desert, surrounded by heavily armed assassins who want them dead. The interaction in the first two frames is brief, only five words, but shows the dynamic between them quite nicely. Most importantly, it moves the story forward almost cinematically.
DC used to be able to deliver stories of this caliber regularly. Action can coexist with character development. Bruce doesn't need to be written as an abusive jerk. Tim Drake as Robin (or whoever) is meant to be someone dedicated to keeping Batman anchored in the light. Dick Grayson is supposed to be a better version of Bruce.
Granted, the family has gotten larger since then. It has a wealth of great chatacters to work with. The basics of good storytelling haven't really changed since then. If the new Editor-in-chief Marie Javins truly wants to restore DC to the success it had during the 90s then all she has to do is use storylines like "Legacy" as a template.
