Reigen x reader

Takes place when everyone goes to Reigen's house after mob defeats Suzuki toichiro (shou's dad)

Pairing: Reigen Arataka x reader

Warnings: mention of kissing, swearing, Reigen being stupid, Reigen Dies as a joke (he doesn't actually die)

Desc: Reigen has had feelings for reader, 'n before the claw incident he planned to confess using the "the moon looks beautiful tonight" tactic (wowser)

And it just so happens that when all the kids are asleep, the moon shines bright, creating the perfect moment for Reigen to tell reader how he really feels

Reigen finds himself staring up at the sky, specifically at the moon which was covered by the divine tree at the moment. He sighed tiredly as he took another puff of smoke from his cigarette. The night is silent, in a good way. He closes his eyes, enjoying the serenity of the moment, as he lets his mind drift off to you for the thousandth time today.

Today was exhausting for Reigen, mentally and physically. He couldn't stop worrying about you and mob. As He takes another long drag of his cigarette, nearly choking when he hears the door to his balcony slide open.

He whips his head around to find you sleepily rubbing your eyes, with your hand falling limply to your side.

" 'Taka? What are you doing ... It's late out. "

your voice below a whisper, your eyes now looking deep into his own. Even in your drowsy state, you looked as beautiful as ever.

"Ah, y'know.." just looking at you was enough to get him tongue tied. "Couldn't sleep."

He rubbed the back of his neck, turning back around to stare at the moon. He silently compared the moon to your beauty, you we're like the moon itself. Despite being surrounded by so many stars, yet you still stood out, your smile bright enough to rival the sun. He caught himself smiling softly.

He was startled when you suddenly appeared beside him, leaning on the rail much like he was doing. Maybe it was his nerves or the feeling of anxiety still lingering around after the fight.

" Reigen, you're being real jumpy right now. Something wrong?" You put your hand on his shoulder, with that soft, smooth voice of yours. He thought he was gonna melt right then and there with the way you were so tenderly looking at him.

Reigen took a puff of his cigarette once more to calm his nerves. Blowing the smoke away from his face before replying.

"Mhm- yeah, it's just that- y'know, so much has happened today. I'm just a little-"

"Stressed?"

"Yeah."

He felt your hands travel to his back, rubbing it comfortingly. His heart nearly stopped at that very moment, for the millionth time in his life, he cursed his genes for making him so sweaty. Fortunately you retracted your hand in time so you wouldn't notice.

He missed the warmth of your hand instantly, the restraint it took to just not take your hand in his. Pull you close as you gently comb through his blonde locks, reassuring about everything and nothing all at once. the things he'd give for it to just happen.

He looked at you, to find you staring at the moon, a soft smile on your face. He couldn't look away, the way the moonlight perfectly highlighted your features, eyes practically glistening as they reflected the moon. The way you smile was enough to make Reigen smile solemnly.

You turned your head to find Reigen staring at you, a smile on his face. Not one of those reassuring smiles he'd give to his customers, not the cocky smile he'd put up with his confident facade. No, it was much more... Sincere.

Heat began to make its way up your neck and onto your cheeks, painting them a soft shade of pink. A contrast to the dark and grey surroundings.

Fuck, you were perfect. Correction: you are perfect.

Reigens eyes started flickering to your eyes, then to your lips. He swallowed his saliva in an attempt to wake himself up, but he found his eyes glued to your lips.

You find yourself admiring Reigen's coffee brown eyes, almost gleaming in the moonlight.

Suddenly Reigen clears his throat and looks away, reverting his gaze back to the moon. It's finally risen enough for it to be seen just over the divine tree.

Should he confess? It does seem like the perfect moment, but what if you don't feel the same? Reigen debated whether or not to confess, but his body had a mind of his own.

"Hey, uh..“

"Mh?"

"The moon is beautiful, isn't it?"

"It sure is, huh?"

You reverted your gaze towards the moon, seemingly unaware of Reigen's indirect confession. «fuck, they don't get it.» Reigen mentally slaps himself for not taking it into consideration.

He continues mentally beating himself up as he takes another puff of his cigarette. before he hears your soft chuckles.

"I love you too, Arataka."

Reigen nearly fucking dies, he chokes on the smoke before regaining his composure, he was over the moon in that very moment. He couldn't stop the stupid, goofy, lovesick smile forming on his face, as his heart beats for you, He nearly dies for the second time when he feels lips on his rosy cheeks, your lips. He looks to his side to find you smiling at him. Suddenly the cool night breeze did nothing to help cool down the warmth spreading through his body, physically and mentally, mostly physically as Reigen started sweating. Alot.

Reigen was at a loss for words, so he did what he does best. Be stupid. As His hands start moving a mile a minute he manages to stammer out;

"T-thats great to hear!"

"Just kiss me you idiot."

Reigen is fucking dead.

Can't Fuck Bracket: Group Stage Release Schedule

Alright everyone, now that Group 1 has been posted, I'm going to be a normal poll runner and post the release date for the group stage

Each group has 3 characters, and I'm going to release them in 3 clusters so there aren't too many at once

Obviously, not all characters who fit into a particular group are in it, because I needed to organize them and it would be impossible to find 32 forms of criteria that would apply to 3 characters and 3 characters ONLY in a group of 96. I wanna talk about Utaha and madoka rq. Mostly Utaha tho.

So like. Their mom? She fuckin sucks. She was married and had Utaha and things were good (mostly)… until three years later she cheated on her husband with her coworker and got pregnant. She managed to play it off as his (tho he was totally suspicious at first), until madoka was born. It is extremely clear that he is not his, what with the bright blonde curly hair and all, but hes willing to accept “hey maybe it’s a recessive gene from her side! Maybe I’m just overthinking the fact that his face doesn’t look like either of ours and he’ll grow into it more!” Until he questions his wife about it and she cracks. He gets extremely pissed off and says this is the final straw with her and leaves and they get divorced. He doesn’t want to see her ever again she can keep Utaha full time he doesn’t care. Their mom is fucking ruined over this. She decides to blame it all on madoka, saying it’s his fault for existing and it’s his fault for looking so different and she hates him and he ruined her life and refuses to accept that this is her fault and could’ve been avoided. She essentially denounced him as her son, even though he’s literally an infant, and neglects the shit out of him and pretends he doesn’t exist. The only reason he lived is cuz her mother was there to help her out after the divorce. She assumes her daughter will get over it in time and eventually fucks off back to her place and doesn’t think much of it. Soon, Utaha is at an age where she is aware of how her little brother is being treated by their mother and can tell that it’s bad. So she, a little elementary schooler, takes it upon herself to start taking care of him. As the years go on she becomes more and more of a caretaker for him to the point she essentially raises him on her own and is basically his parent. Their mom will only provide for Utaha, if even that, and the only time she will acknowledge madoka is to tell her to stop wasting her time on him. But Utaha doesn’t, and takes her role taking care of him very very seriously. As a kid she had been enrolled in dance lessons and had serious potential, and it was something she knew she wanted to pursue even at five years old. However after a few years, she quits and sets this dream aside entirely so she can take care of madoka. She’s extremely protective over him, and goes out of her way to make sure he doesn’t hear how their mother talks about him. She’s extremely aware of his usually optimistic and naive personality, and she does her best to nurture it so he can grow up to be a good kind person, but is also very aware of how much protection he needs to prevent bad things from happening to him, and goes above and beyond to provide it. Honestly, how sheltered she keeps him and how protective she is of him probably isn’t good, but she’s literally a kid who was thrust into this at like four or five years old. Most of her life decisions revolve around him, even down to the clothes she wears because she knows she will likely pass them on to him at some point. She becomes even more protective over him as grows increasingly aware of his mental disabilities as well. Sometimes madoka feels a bit suffocated by her, but he also feels guilty for feeling that way because he knows the toll caring for him takes on her and how much she’s given up for him, but also knows that he is not equipped for taking care of himself and that he needs her support, which is where his arc of wanting to become stronger and more independent starts, from that feeling. Utaha though, she doesn’t resent him or blame him at all, in fact she prefers it when she’s with him and caring for him and is anxious when she doesn’t know what he’s doing or thinks he might be in trouble. She cares about him more than anything in the world, to the point it’s honestly detrimental to her own life.

In middle school she befriends Kiriko Suzuki (yes she is one of Suzukis big sisters), who is constantly trying to convince her to step back and live her own life and stop worrying about him. She doesn’t take her advice most of the time, as her anxiety about his well being and her fear of their mother doing something to him completely overwhelms any other desires she has. Until finally, when picking a high school, Kiriko convinces her to enroll in her dream school, a private all girls school with an extremely good academic program and even the option to take dance related classes. Utaha didn’t want to, she wanted to go to school where Madoka could also enroll, if even continuing on to high school at all. But Kiriko got her to cave, and she loves it there, and hates herself for loving it there and constantly worries about madoka.

I’m thinking about promoting Utaha to main cast status so I can pursue her arc of learning that even though madoka needs a lot of extra help and a good parental figure, she is also just as important and doesn’t deserve sacrificing her entire life for him, and learning to step back and live her own life and trust madoka, especially now that he has a bigger support system. I didn’t mention in here, but in middle school she was also friends with Soga (the captain) who is in a similar situation to her and like. I just think. Between him and Kiriko she could grow a lot.

Fox Abbottsford

Fox is a registered social worker. He's a longtime government employee in the Department of Community Services, and started his career working in the area of child protection. He switched over to working with social assistance benefits recipients for a few years, but his passion is in working with children, so he switched back. He's currently a supervisor in his department.

He's an artist, or as a handful of media outlets have described him, "a talented local artist". He's had a few gallery shows in Willow Creek and Newcrest over the years, and he's illustrated three children's books so far, with a fourth in the works.

He's a type 1 diabetic and has been since the age of six. He fervently hoped he wouldn't pass on that gene to any of his kids, but both Forest and Camellia are also diabetic.

He loves the water. When he and Takahiro were designing their house, one of Fox's requirements was that it had to have a pool so he could go swimming whenever he wanted. He's always found the water calming.

He used to have a pet fox named Ruby. People often remarked on the irony of a guy named Fox having a pet fox, and it became one of the weird things he was known for when he was younger.

Takahiro Suzuki

Taka is originally from Japan. He followed Fox to Canada after their whirlwind romance, and never really looked back. Although he’s travelled to Japan to visit his family many times, he’s never once regretted his choice to immigrate. He loves Fox and he loves his life in Canada. This year, he plans to stop procrastinating and finally apply for Canadian citizenship.

When he first came to Canada, he found a lot of people seemed to struggle to pronounce his name. In light of that, he decided to choose a “Canadian name” for himself. He picked David, but it never stuck, mostly because David Suzuki is the name of someone famous in Canada, and no one could quite keep a straight face when Taka would introduce himself as “David Suzuki”. These days, he’s less worried about people messing up his name and is fine with whatever people can manage.

He’s an early childhood educator and worked for several years in a local preschool. However, his dream was always to own and work in his own daycare center. Twelve years ago, he started Hands Around The World Childcare, and he’s never been happier. He didn’t initially plan it to be an international daycare, but the name seemed to attract a lot of newcomers to Canada, and now it has a reputation as a multicultural and multilingual enrichment place for kids.

Taka is musically talented. He can sing reasonably well but his real gift is playing the piano. He likes to get together with his friend Yuri to play piano & violin duets.

His favourite colour is yellow. When they were doing the interior design for their house, Fox made sure to include lots of yellow elements, just for him.

Background:

Aaron comes from a poor family. They live in the more rural areas of Sunset Savana, and do not make very much money. His parents struggled to make enough money to feed them all, but they worked hard everyday. However, one day they hadn’t returned home and were reported to have died in an accident. His older brother had grown tired of living in those conditions, so he had left the family behind and never looked back

As a result, Aaron’s younger sisters turned to him for help. However, he still cared greatly for his family. He would go out on the streets asking if there were simple tasks he could do for neighbors in exchange for a meal. Oftentimes, he could not get enough food to feed everyone, so the food was given to his younger sisters. He never resented them for that, and would only eat when they had enough.

After discovering that he could use magic, he enrolled himself at Night Raven College in hopes of finding a way to help his family have a better life.

His brother had returned when he had been accepted into the school and attempted to make amends, but Aaron left without saying goodbye to him. He refuses to speak to someone who had turned his back on them when they were struggling.

Consortium including Brazilians sequences the reference genome of Arabica coffee

Coffee is one of the world’s most traded commodities, and Coffea arabica is the most widely consumed of the 130 or so species that exist. It is the result of the fusion of two other species: Coffea canephora (known in Brazil as Conilon or Robusta coffee) and Coffea eugenioides. In the last decade, almost every major commodity in the world has had a reference genome sequenced, but coffee has only recently joined the list.

The reference genome is essential for developing varieties that are better adapted to climate change and resistant to disease. By sequencing the reference genome of Arabica coffee in an unprecedented endeavor, a consortium of scientists was able to select genes that may be responsible (candidate genes) for coffee’s resistance to rust and other diseases. At the same time, they identified the expression of some genes related to the aroma of Arabica.

“With the knowledge of the genome, it is possible to obtain information that allows us to go in two directions: the development of varieties by directing crossbreeding, in other words, as a reference to guide us in future crossbreeding that produces new varieties; and more direct interventions, such as modifying a gene specifically,” summarizes Douglas Domingues, currently a researcher at the Plant Genomics and Transcriptomics Group of the Luiz de Queiroz School of Agriculture at the University of São Paulo (ESALQ-USP), in Brazil, and one of the authors of the paper (developed when he was still working at the Rio Claro campus of the São Paulo State University).

According to him, there was a bit of a race to sequence the genome. “The price of sequencing has come down a lot, and coffee was one of the few commodities that hadn’t had its reference genome sequenced. There were other groups trying, and there was a paper published just before ours. But most of them used the standard strategy: choosing an interesting plant for cultivation and sequencing its genome,” he reports.

The group to which Domingues belongs has sequenced a plant that is not interesting from an agronomic point of view but has a lot to offer from a genetic point of view. “The advantage of our reference genome is that it’s derived from a ’dihaploid’ individual. This results in a homogeneous reference genome that will be a superior standard for future research,” explains Patrick Descombes, coordinator of the work and senior expert in genomics at the Nestlé Institute of Food Safety & Analytical Sciences. He explains that Arabica coffee is a tetraploid: it has two genomes in one because it is the fusion of two other species.

By sequencing a dihaploid derived from Arabica coffee compared to a common tetraploid variety, scientists get a clearer and more simplified view of the genome. This makes it possible to identify variations between similar genes with greater precision, facilitating the use of molecular information for improvement studies.

In this study, the group was able to determine more precisely when this fusion took place: no more than 600,000 years ago, C. canephora and C. eugenioides fused to form this tetraploid hybrid, which continued its evolutionary path. “We came to this conclusion using DNA information from Arabica, Robusta and Eugenioides: we were able to make a more accurate inference because previously this interval was dated at between 50,000 and 1 million years. We reduced that window to 350,000 to 600,000 years,” reports Domingues.

The article, published in Nature Genetics on April 15, was the result of a consortium of scientists from more than ten countries, including Brazil, which participated with more than one institution. In Domingues’ case, his participation was partially funded by FAPESP through a Young Researcher project and a postdoctoral fellowship awarded to Suzana Tiemi Ivamoto-Suzuki, also an author of the article.

“We used the reference sequence to understand the diversity that exists in wild Arabica coffees, from the African region of origin, and compare this with the Arabica coffees that are cultivated today,” says the ESALQ-USP scientist, explaining that the group resequenced Arabica coffee varieties planted in different parts of the world, as well as wild specimens collected in the forests of Ethiopia, and managed to understand the difference between the wild and cultivated ones.

To gain a genomic perspective on the evolutionary history of Arabica, the consortium sequenced 46 accessions, including three Robusta, two Eugenioides and 41 Arabica. The latter included an 18th-century type specimen (the physical specimen designated by the author of the taxon at the time of the description as the material on which it was based), 12 cultivars with different breeding histories, the Timor hybrid (a spontaneous cross of Arabica with the pest-resistant C. canephora Robusta variety) and five of its backcrosses with Arabica and 17 wild accessions plus three wild/cultivated ones collected from the east and west sides of the Great Rift Valley in Ethiopia.

“We used the latest genomic technologies, i.e. long reads from the high-fidelity PacBio system [for gene sequencing] and proximity ligation with short reads from Illumina [an integrated system for analyzing genetic variation and biological function], to generate the chromosome assembly. This combination resulted in a chromosome-level assembly of the highest quality and integrity,” says Descombes.

Diseases

According to the ESALQ-USP professor, among the cultivated species, something very important for breeding was the introduction of genes for resistance to coffee leaf rust. “In the 1930s, Brazil played an important role in this regard. And the IAC [Agronomic Institute of Campinas, also in the state of São Paulo] is a pioneering center for studies and breeding. IAC researchers provided us with plants that predate the institution’s breeding program, which dates back to the 1930s. Disease-oriented breeding emerged between the 1960s and 1970s, and the main work was to cross a rust-resistant Arabica plant, the so-called Timor hybrid, with plants grown in various countries so that the new varieties would be resistant. But it wasn’t known which genes were responsible for the resistance.”

Discovered in the fields of Timor Island in the 1920s, the Timor hybrid is naturally resistant to rust and other diseases. “In addition to rust, coffee berry disease, coffee berry borer and coffee stem borer are three other major pests affecting production in many regions of the world. Climate change is also a key concern in the control of pests and diseases, as it allows them to spread to new regions. The trade of green coffee beans between different regions is another factor that can facilitate the spread of certain pests and diseases to new areas,” reveals Maud Lepelley, manager of the Plant Genetics and Chemistry group at the Nestlé Institute of Agricultural Sciences.

In the paper now published, the group has managed to find sets of genes already linked in the literature to disease resistance that are only present in post-improvement varieties. “Somehow the Timor hybrid managed to get these resistance genes, and now we know which ones. There are dozens of them, but we’ve narrowed the search. Arabica coffee has 69,000 genes; we’ve narrowed it down to just under 30 genes. Being able to identify these candidate resistance genes, which were previously unknown, is an unprecedented achievement in our research,” points out Domingues.

But the work is far from over, as these genes have yet to be tested. “More research will be needed to identify and create varieties that are resistant to these and other coffee pests and diseases,” says Lepelley.

Using molecular genetics, the consortium was also able to make a triple separation, showing that the genetic diversity of Ethiopia’s wild plants differs from that of the coffee grown today, probably due to a bottleneck effect and domestication, as few plants were selected for this process. “We’ve shown here that the genetic diversity was already very low among wild specimens due to multiple pre-domestication bottlenecks, and that the genotypes selected for cultivation by man, both the ancient local Ethiopian varieties and the more recent ones, were already somewhat mixed between divergent lineages,” the scientists state.

Aroma

At the same time, Domingues’ group was able to observe some events related to the expression of genes linked to coffee quality, especially aroma. They studied the terpene synthase enzymes, which in plants are related to defense against insects, as well as a gene related to lipid compounds in coffee, which codes for fatty acid desaturase 2.

“We observed in an Asian Arabica variety that the genes associated with aroma and flavor are expressed more in the fruit by the C. eugenioides subgenome than by the other parent. In other words, one of the genomes contributes more to the sensory characteristics of the drink than the other. What we’re wondering now is: does this apply to all the varieties we’ve sequenced, both pre- and post-improvement?” says Domingues.

“This study sheds light on how interactions between C. canephora and C. eugenoides genes are associated with Arabica coffee traits such as aroma. Elucidating the interactions between genes helps to improve our knowledge of the genetic mechanisms underlying important characteristics of Arabica, a fundamental prerequisite for developing new varieties that will guarantee the production of coffee beans for future coffee products,” says Lepelley.

A spin-off of the work is already underway, according to Domingues. “I’ve just started another project, which is an offshoot of this first effort, in partnership with the French researchers who were part of this consortium. We’re now going to analyze non-cultivated coffee species. We want to get to know the genome of non-coffee species that contain characteristics that are relevant in a climate change scenario. We’re focusing on sequencing species that are more climate resilient. We want to know what genes they have that Arabica coffee doesn’t have and that make them climate-resistant. Eventually, we could introduce or modify them through gene editing to make cultivated species more resistant.’
