Jamil, Idia: Desires so Deep
Ignore me getting a late start on this new birthday series 💀 (Got busy with irl stuff!!)
Oddly enough, the vignettes don’t mention Jamil’s birthday at all; they’re at the National Art Museum in the Land of Dawning to celebrate its 100th anniversary. It seems this new series (Platinum Jacket) will have vignettes with more focus on how the boys relate to and what they think about important historical figures in Twisted Wonderland!
… Also, the fact that the book 7 part 5 update came out a few days before Jamil’s birthday… and then his vignettes go and show a Maleficent painting in them… Yeah 😭 but what’s even funnier to me is that Idia calls Jamil a chuunibyou WHich iS SO ACCURATE, THANK YoU fOR CALLinG HIS ASS OuT, KING 🙏 What is Jamil doing in that sussy Groovy if not being a chunni…
A Tale as Old as Time.
Tumblr media
Contained within a shining platinum frame was an illustration of a starry scene. A man in a fine white turban crowned by a single violet plume. A woman, perched on a balcony, in a refreshing blue-green, a jasmine flower set into her long, dark braid.
They stared longingly into each other’s eyes, conveying an emotion not spoken aloud. No words were needed for what they had: a love so tender it made the night weep. The stars into glittering tears sliding down the face of darkness.
Standing before the painting of the happy couple, Jamil folded his arms and frowned.
… Can feelings truly defy social status?
"A street rat marrying a princess… Hah."
His fingers curled to fists, digging into the pristine white fabric of his suit. Jamil's expression remained neutral, no hint of the bitterness brewing within. He was a master of leashing it.
What nonsense. I doubt their happiness lasted long. The difference in their standing is far too vast to be bridged.
Jamil lowered his gaze and looked away.
Adjacent to the loving pair was a spindly man with a curled goatee. His crimson and black headdress resembled the flared hood of a desert viper—a look iconic to the Sorcerer of the Sands. He gleefully clasped a golden oil lamp in his long, bony fingers. A remarkable achievement, an item he had been searching his entire life for.
Now, here was a great man. Someone who had slaved away and earned his reputation, climbed in social ranks on merit alone. The Sorcerer of the Sands would die a highly accomplished man, advisor to a sultan, renown scholar mage, and seeker of truth.
The very symbol of Scarabia’s spirit of deliberation.
"Jamil-shi?"
The voice was soft and nervous, like that of a specter not yet parted from this world. A faint blue glow fell upon the Sorcerer of the Sands.
Jamil turned, releasing a sigh when he realized who had appeared beside him. "... Oh. It's you, Idia-senpai."
"Eeep!" His upperclassman jumped at the mention of his name. He clung to the doorway, and anxiety evident on his pale face.
"Well? Don't let my presence deter you from appreciating the artwork."
"N-No, that's okay!! It was getting to be too crowded in the main hall, so I wanted to dip and take a breather somewhere quiet to let my stamina recharge... b-but that's completely pointless if other people are still around!"
"You won't even notice me. I not a snake—I don't bite," Jamil insisted flatly. Not unless I want to. "You look suspicious lurking in the doorframe. You may as well come in."
Left with no other choice, Idia awkwardly shuffled into the exhibit.
He positioned himself a good distance away from Jamil, not saying so much as a word as he stared at an ornate figure of a broad-bodied ape. Its lips were twisted into a grotesquely wide smile.
Nestled in the monkey’s palms was a massive red jewel, glistening even in the scarce light. Idia's own terrified reflection bounced back at him in the gem’s many facets.
"Can't believe I got dragged out for this," the third year grumbled under his breath. "I-I wanted to go to that pop-up Sled Over Heels collab cafe with the walk-in museum... Instead I have to be here and gawk at the same pictures I've seen over and over again in magic history textbooks... Aaah, it totally doesn't compare at all to cute anime girls pouring all their passion into the artful sport of sledding!"
Some small, fragmented part of Jamil grimaced at the disrespect, try as he might to close off his ears, to not engage. No good ever comes of provoking a stubborn mule, he chided himself.
But the devil on his left shoulder pounced.
"Idia-senpai," Jamil spoke carefully, a slight edge to his voice. It made the hairs on the back of Idia's neck stand at attention. "Are you not a fan of this style of artwork? Or is it the subject matter you find distasteful?"
His upperclassmen startled. Horrified as the realization that Jamil had heard his every complaint, the tips of his flaming hair colored pink.
"W-Well... I'm not exactly a buff for this kind of thing," Idia stuttered. "It's ancient history. Been there, don’t that. Th-There's really no point in being on that grind cycle if it all just amounts to the same ending anyway. That's basically all history is, anyway."
Jamil bristled—though he took care to not let it show. "I beg to differ. The story of the Sorcerer of the Sands defies such paltry notions. He struggled much in his life, even served under a carefree, incompetent sultan that barely listened to a work he said.”
I know what that’s like.
“Jamil…!”
A smile he thoroughly detested flashed in his mind. So big and pearly and irritating as he offered him his hand.
“Let’s start over. We can be rivals… but we can be friends too.”
But that boy was a fool.
Feelings can’t trump social status. Not then, not now. Not ever.
“And yet it was thanks to his contributions that he is remembered today as one of the greatest men to have ever lived. The Sorcerer of the Sands was able to break free and live as he desired. He acquired the Genie of the Lamp and phenomenal cosmic power. He decided his own destiny.”
"Uweh, sounds like he's your kami-oshi, Jamil-shi... I guess it makes sense though, since you and the Sorcerer of the Sands are the same character archetype and everything. Chunnibyous gotta stick together and all…”
"… What is that supposed to mean?" Jamil planted his hands on his hips. He didn’t understand all of Idia’s slang, but he also wasn’t sure if he wanted to.
Idia's eyes—wide and anxious—cut away from him. “I-It’s nothing important…”
“Then why are you hiding it?”
“B-Because you’re definitely the type who would hold a grudge if anyone pisses you off!!”
“How rude. I’m offended that you think so lowly of me.” Jamil allowed himself a little smirk. “I’ll have you know that I won’t stop there. In fact, I’ll enact a vengeance plot so excruciatingly humiliating that you won’t ever be able to face the light of day comfortably again.”
“S-See?! That’s what I meant!! Y-You’re a certified chuunibyou!!”
“Whatever that means, I assure you that I’m not. Is it so wrong to look back on history and to appreciate how far we’ve come since?”
“Th-That’s…”
Jamil found himself returning to the painting of the Sorcerer with the lamp. He was almost drawn to it, lulled into a hypnotic trance. An item that could make all of his hopes come true…
“Let me ask you this: if you could have any wish granted, what would that wish be?”
“E-Eh?! Any wish…” Idia fiddled with the glittering buttons on his suit. He nibbled on his lower lip, a darkness having swept up what little color there was left to him. “I-I can’t say it, but… more than anything, there’s someone I want to say goodbye to.”
“I see. A fond farewell.”
Letting go.
Jamil’s chest tightened.
In a distant memory, flowers of fire lit up the night. He had been dancing then, hair and fabric flying as he spun and spun and spun. When had he last felt so free? His wings unbound, the sky as his limits.
“As for myself, what I wish for most of all is…”
He glanced back at the painting of the two lovers. Star-crossed, against a star-streaked sky. Adventure calling, liberation beckoning.
A look most malicious graced his careful controlled features. Lips in a lopsided smirk, eyes like daggers, glinting sinisterly in the dark. Concealed weapons rising to the surface.
“… to be well-connected with people who may prove useful in attaining my dreams. Yes, that’s it. Useful.”

Lion King and Aladdin Crossover - Disney Santa 2023
Zazu and Iago share gifts with each other - Lion King and Aladdin Crossover - Disney Santa 2023
That I don't just draw exclusively ducks (although I love them the most), I certainly drew other birds, so I started with other Disney cartoons. This time related to the Disney Secret Santa held on Deviantart every year and my first time doing this. Yes, I am also posting about National Bird Day, which is celebrated on January 5th every year.
I'm already late, but let me say right away that I did and this is my first time drawing these characters and it's really a pleasure to draw them. I did this related to Disney Santa 2023 for Disney Dreamers on Deviantart and this is my belated Christmas and New Year's gift to @Gotapenname from Deviantart and I'm Secret Santa for her, and I did what she loves the most. I drew her favorite characters Zazu the bird and Iago the parrot sharing gifts (vases or bowls that hold the birds' favorite bugs) and this is part of a crossover of one of my favorite Disney movies, Aladdin and The Lion King. Apart from them, there are also Timon and Pumbaa, Abu the monkey, Rafiki the baboon, Genie, Aladdin and Jasmine. I wanted to add Simba and Nala as well, but unfortunately I wouldn't care for all of them, so I'm sorry. Yes, since it is strange that they celebrate those holidays in those countries (Africa and the Middle East, primarily Arabia, but we are referring to the pre-Muslim period), so I did it this way. Yes, I still need to practice drawing human characters as well as animal characters. I hope you like this drawing and this crossover and I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2024!
Yes, this year is also the 30th anniversary of The Lion King, as well as the 30th anniversary of the Aladdin series.
Iago, Zazu, Timon and Pumbaa, Abu, Genie, Rafiki, Aladdin and Jasmine, all created by Disney (C)

KOT Ficlet #7 (Kudou Chika/Houzuki Satowa)
The post chapter 110 ficlet I had promised ;)
Since I'm a little late, this is set in a hotel they're staying at for nationals.
This is more of an excuse to write them as hormonal teenagers because I can't do that in my longfic lmao.
⚠️: This is soft PwP majorly, so here's your rating warning! (Rated E for Explicit). Enjoy!
The world is conspiring against her today.
Satowa huffs, standing before the locked door of her room at seven in the evening, jiggling the doorknob at the tiniest hope of it unlocking itself somehow.
But no, it's bolted shut with no give, and the master key was marvelously not available either. Granted, it was her fault. She was certain she knew Hiro’s sleep pattern well enough to predict when the girl would awaken, hence decided to leave her pair of keys in their shared room.
She was evidently wrong. Satowa sighs, resigning to sit herself beside the door till she thought of something else. Not like she didn’t have enough of a jungle gym in her brain already.
It had been two weeks since they.... confessed which is putting it tamely given how they both yelled their feelings out to each other a day apart.
Satowa had expected nothing in return. In that moment, she only remembers seeing red—when Chika bowed his head. She thought a hug was simple enough, something she could explain away later easily—it was a white lie, she was having a sunstroke, whatever works.
But when forced to confess, Satowa had never fathomed his arms wrapping around her, head softly lying against her shoulder. She had never fathomed a reply—the same as hers, with a wide grin across his face—only the day after.
But the progression of events had led to Satowa wanting something more the day after that, like a monkey in an experiment being psychologically wired to demand more candy.
She sighs, resting her head between her knees. Because nothing came. The next day, the day after the next. Even almost two weeks later, they were perfectly normal around each other. Something had changed in Chika, though. He'd become more... mature. His usually fiery eyes were more relaxed, a laid back light in them that watched her carefully, every hour of everyday.
Unsurprisingly, she wasn't the only girl to notice this change. Fifty percent of the school population now saw him, more than ever, as a boy put through horrible circumstances that he never deserved. Some of them cried and bought him lunches and chocolates as an apology for treating him like a criminal.
She was happy for him, when he shyly took their bargain. She really was.
Until it somehow turned into an 'everyday-is-valentines-day' fiesta and Chika's locker was exploding with gifts round the clock. That was a bit much.
And Satowa had predicted him to yell at them to stop—for Christ's sake—throwing food his way as if he were a dying fish. The old Chika would do that.
New Chika, however, simply pursed his lips, chucked the contents of his locker into a bag and offered it to everyone in the club later, insisting they take it home and not eat it here so as to not hurt anyone that the intended recipient wasn't the one taking them.
Satowa never accepts any, feeling a little jaded. “I don’t like sweet things,” is her excuse.
He'd told her he loved her back and for a while, she thought he did. But her confidence began to falter, now that the small smiles usually sent her way were public property.
Maybe he really did love her as a friend and she misunderstood his kindness.
She buries her head deeper into her knees, groaning in irritation. The sound of jingling keys makes her raise her head in relief. Hiro-senpai you savior—
"What...." He eyes her, confused.
"Uh...” Oh, great. Of all the people. "Locked my keys in the room." she smiles awkwardly.
 "The other pair?"
"Hiro-senpai has it. She isn't in."
She eyes her watch. Quarter past Seven. Judging by the breathless huffing, he was returning from an evening run. He wipes the sweat off his brow in a way Satowa thinks Kudou doesn't know is so scandalous.
"Have you seen the practice room downstairs?"
She would have, if her brain wasn't so full of him.
"Wanna check it out now? Since you have time to kill?"
"Why?" She hadn't meant to ask that out loud, but now that it was out of her mouth, she was curious.
He furrows his brows. "Aren't you supposed to ask me where at this point?"
"No," She reiterates, "I'm more interested in why."
Instead of answering her directly, he rattles the keys in her face. "I'd booked it an hour ago. Thought I'd ask glasses, but he's out so..."
Ah, so that’s where Hiro was. Satowa squints, repeating, "So?"
"So," he ruffles his hair. "Accompany me?"
She didn’t need to be told twice.
While Chika busies himself in laying down the Kotos, something he insisted to do for her whenever he was around because 'You weigh half of it and I'd know since I've carried you before.'
(She'd never understood how he suddenly was completely comfortable saying the weirdest things.)
"No, really," She tries, again. "Why?"
He barely looks over his shoulder to shoot her a sheepish glare, playing with the hem of the Koto cover, and staying rooted to his spot.
“In case you decided to come with somebody else.”
"Somebody else..." She narrows her eyes. "Hiro-senpai?"
He scratches his neck, mumbling, "That guy's here..."
"I'm going to need more description than that."
"The flashy guy," he waves it off, as if he doesn't want to say it. "The one from Ichiei. The one that..." He exhales loudly. "The one that hugged you."
She frowns, a little offended, "I'm pretty sure I can defend myself with a kick to the groin. I don't need you to protect me."
"What? No? No!" He defends. "It's not that he'd do anything to you. If anything, I know how much your kicks hurt. I just...” He releases an exhausted sigh. "I don't think you realizes how much attention your—" He scans her frame and averts his gaze, panicked. “you gather."
"I gather attention?” She looks appalled. "Yes, because I'm the person girls are flocking around like felines high on catnip."
He quirks an eyebrow. "Does it bother you?"
She's silent for a second. Then, "No."
 "Are you sure?"
 "Positive."
"I hope you know you look pissed."
 "That's just my face."
His lips twitch into a teasing grin but he ultimately drops the topic.
Satowa hmphs as he lays the Koto before her. She places her fingers gingerly over the strings, humming a familiar tune.
 "That's not 'I'."
"No, it's not, " She replies, lightly thrumming the notes. “It’s a piece I play when I don't feel great."
 "So you are pissed."
 She rolls her eyes.
“At me?" He hazards a guess.
"Yes,” She glares at him, pressing down on the first note to drown both their voices out. "And no."
When music fills the air, Chika sits before her in comfortable silence, listening to her express whatever it was she wanted to. The piece is a high pitched screech in comparison to Satowa's usual delicate notes, bordering between a sacrificial satanic ceremony organ and a frustrated banshee wail.
It helps her channel all her grievances in one place, in a matter of minutes. At some point she forgets Chika is in the room but it doesn't matter because he's in every thought she has.
His voice. His smell. His skin.
Somewhere in between, it transforms her music, into a soft vibrato of a ballroom waltz, like the push and pull of hands and mingling of bodies. She lets the sound calm her nerves. Remind her focus right now should be music and nothing else, like it has always been. One up or down should change nothing between them.
She was dealing with it for all this time, she could sustain another few years if Satowa put her mind to it.
"That...”  His voice cuts through her thoughts. "That sounded pained."
She nods.
"Uh... Are you okay?"
There were many answers to this question. She had done a lot of thinking in the past few days of how to approach the topic of... them. Even saying that sounded strange to her ears.
He edges closer. "Hou—"
"No," She replies. Then a heartbeat later, "No. I don't know."
"You don't know?"
She nods her denial.
"Okay. Okay, that’s fine.”  He says, perplexed. "Let's begin with what's bothering you?"
Mostly you.
When she doesn't reply, he does actually come closer to where she sits.
"I can't help you if you won't talk to me, Houzuki."
She looks at him over wet eyelashes, horrified at how her emotions were really out of control today. She swipes a hand across her eyes and avoids his concerned gaze.
"I have a lot of things to think about." And you being unaware of my feelings or actively ignoring them really isn't helping.
"That's a good start. Things like...?"
"Like how you're so casually avoiding everything that happened a mere two weeks ago." Before her mind catches up with her mouth, the words have been said and all she can do is slam a hand flush against her lips and hope to disappear into oblivion.
The idea of Seppuku sounded very tempting right about now.
"I'm not."
"Not what?" She asks.
"Not avoiding what happened that day,” He purses his lips. "I can't even if I want to."
She suddenly feels a whole lot more vulnerable, kneading fists into her lap. Oh great, she'd made everything even more awkward than it already was. He wasn't even looking at her.
"Actually forget what I just said. I'm tired—" This is exactly why I needed alone time. "—with nationals coming and all."
"That's why I didn't mention it." He mumbles.
"Mention what."
"That day... The confession..... Us. With nationals coming up, you'd want to focus on this. I know how passionate you are,”  His gaze softens. "I've always loved that about you."
The word sends a pleasant tingle down her spine. Us. We. Him and me. Love—
"You mean as a friend?"
"What?"
"Love me,” She repeats robotically. "As a friend."
He raises a brow, amused. "Why does everyone keep asking me that?" He sighs, “Tetsuki, Glasses. Gosh, even Isaki."
Satowa chokes on air. "I-Isaki-san knows?"
"You're lucky you didn't have to answer her questions." His expression looks genuinely pained.
Satowa giggles at the image of Chika smothered by Isaki's bear hugs. His grin widens near impossibly at her. "It's been a while since you smiled normally at me. I've missed it."
"You've had your fair share of beautiful smiles, I think." The visual of girls batting their eyelashes at him turns her mouth sour. Chika is beautiful. She doesn't deserve him. "Enough for at least a decade."
"They aren't you.”
"No. They're better than me."
He looks at her, mouth hanging open like his jaw had unscrewed itself. "Do you genuinely believe that?"
She does. Satowa belonged from a boring world. She lived a mundane life; eating, practicing, sleeping, waking up, practicing, repeat. And Chika contrasted her completely, all wide amber eyes with an adventurous gleam in them.
She loved them so much, it was driving her crazy. And lately her obsession had gotten worse, not that she'd ever admit to it.
"Did I make you feel that way..?" She wants to wipe the hurt off his face. Satowa rises off the floor, dusting her skirt off.
I don't deserve you.
"Don't pity me. I didn't want to push my feelings on you, either way. You saying I love you back there really saved me from the embarrassment. Thank you."
His jaw goes slack. His gaze remained glued to the floor as if it would turn to lava any minute.
He collects himself with a deep breath. "What about my behavior made you think I don't return your feelings?"
She doesn't understand the question. Because though Satowa had basically confessed her undying love and desire to stay by his side forever, she had not for once considered him feeling the same.
So she shrugs, awkwardly. "I'm not worth the effort."
When his gaze lifts off the floor to meet hers, a chill runs up her spine. He looks conflicted, rubbing his neck in consideration . And somehow that makes her want to kiss him so bad her toes curl into themselves.
"You're not... worth the effort...” He reiterates, incredulous.
"Look I'm sorry for how things turned out,” She says, frantically trying to defuse the situation. "I can be a bullhead and say unnecessary things and this wasn't one of my brightest moments. So let's just forget this ever happened? Yeah?"
"How about no?” He replies, blankly. "I want to know what about that day and what the fuck about my confession made you think I haven't been in love with you for the longest time?"
"Look again, no need to—"
"No, you listen," He says, hovering dangerously close to her face, face dark with anger. “I meant what I said that day. I love you. Dammit—I ran back all the way because I was jealous out of my mind with scenarios of someone else finding you play, plus this room is soundproof and they could take advantage of that—like some petty idiot and here you are—"
"You what?” She asks, stunned.
"—convincing me not to love you after you confessed first, by the way. You said you loved me—"
"Kudou...”
"No. Shut the fuck up and listen to me,” Beads of sweat rolled down his forehead, hot with anger. Well, hot in more ways than one. "You taught me that there was good in me, that I was redeemable in some way. Even though I've hurt people. I nearly killed Grandpa. "
"You know you didn't do it.” She consoles.
"Not until you came around, no. “He shakes his head. “Not until that day when you told me you wanted me to be happy, to not be hurt, to cherish me. Did the thought never cross your mind that maybe I felt the same?"
She stares at him, blinking. No. It really hadn't because what really was lovable about her? She was a taciturn, obsessed Koto player that cared little outside of her small world.
Why would he—why would anyone love her?
"Oh my God,” He whispers. "You really didn't."
Satowa doesn't reply, she just feels small in front of his large frame towering over her.
"Th-that's because there's nothing you could see in me worth your while! I'm average looking at best, good at nothing except the instrument I've played since I was born. I haven't been on dates, I haven't...k-kissed... "
"Houzu—"
"I'm boring and dull and there's so many better people you could be spending time with because you're amazing and you're way too good looking to be wasting your time on me—"
"Houzuki listen to m—"
"And all these feelings you're feeling are temporary, just because I saved you. Maybe you're grateful for what I said—"
"Satowa."
She stills, both to the deep tone of his voice and the hand gripping her wrist firmly. Her vision goes all blurry; she can't really see him or anything around them, only feel his thumb stroking her palm in a continuous rhythm.
"I'm sorry,” He says, finally. "I'm sorry I had no idea you've been feeling insecure this whole time. God, I really have my head way up my ass like Tetsuki says."
She laughs despite herself. She feels his hold tighten.
"I never could imagine for a second that someone as perfect as you could feel this way."
“P-perfect?”
"You've always been so balanced and confident, I thought I was the only one weighing my self-worth against your standards. I never felt enough for you because you're... You know, you; beautiful, brilliant, talented... I've been so stupid."
She purses her lips. "I'm really not what you make me out to be."
"Maybe. Maybe not. But does it really matter?" She looks up though her eyes felt like she'd doused them in vinegar. "You said you love me. And I definitely love you—no questions asked. Is that not enough for us both?"
"I....” She whispers. "You're right.... It should be."
He releases a long sigh. "So we've finally reached a conclusion?"
"I think.”
"That we may feel mutually undeserving but we still love each other and there's nothing we can do about that?"
"That sounds very embarrassing,” She hides her blush. "But yes."
"Okay. Good. Finally. "
The fingers curled around her wrist make Satowa feel something in the pit of her stomach, pulsating within as he draws closer into her space.
He wraps an arm around her waist, the other leaving her wrist to explore all the other places they could be. Up her arm, her shoulder, the crook of her neck, the flowing strands of her hair.
Satowa's lids drop, mouth opening in a small exhale. "What was that about the soundproof room?"
It's like her words flip a switch.
Instantly, he dives down to capture her lips, pulling her into him. She's so small in his arms, feeling the full height of him as if for the first time. Sensing her discomfort, he puts hands under her thighs, grabbing as she hops off the floor and into his grasp, ankles hooking behind his waist.
"Jesus," he whispers, kissing down her neck like he'd devour her. "How are you so beautiful?"
She throws her head back, letting him nip at her skin. She'll be bruised by tomorrow, but nothing Hiro’s concealer can't hide. "I'm not..." She arches her back when his hands wander a little lower.
"Let me show you," he drawls, kissing her jaw up to her lips. "Let me show you just how beautiful you are to me."
Satowa's suddenly too warm in her blouse, holding her breath as the buttons fall open and his hands traverse inside, tracing the lines of her body. His palms are warm, thumb stroking the underside of her breast, raising goose bumps wherever he touches.
Her arms circle around his neck to sink into his hair, drawing him closer. Kudou walks them to a mahogany desk in the room, putting her carefully down as if she were spun of glass.
He breaks away to look into her eyes tentatively. Satowa whines, scrunching her face to appear as displeased as she feels. He laughs, pinching her nose. His finger moves over her features, swiping against her lips, her chin, her throat, her breast, her stomach.
Satowa's breath hitches in her throat.
Kudou looks at her through hooded eyelids. "Tell me to stop and I will," he says, turning his palm downward, pushing under the belt of her skirt. The expanse of his hand is the entire size of her waist; God, he's so large it's doing things to her. Satowa closes her eyes.
He cups her cheek with the other hand, gently lifting her chin to his gaze. “I need an answer."
She opens her mouth, tried to give him a verbal answer. When one finger touches her swollen lips, she can only manage a strangled moan before nodding furiously.
He goes painfully slow. So slow, that Satowa has to move herself to let him know she's strong enough to handle it. He doesn't relent.
"Kudou," she groans, opening her legs wider for him. "God, please I'm going to lose it."
Sensing her urgency, he puts another finger in. Satowa gasps, arching her back till she almost hits the desk. Kudou catches her in time, cradling her head softly.
He pumps slowly, letting the rhythm build within her. It's too much stimulation for her and Satowa bites back the sound threatening to rip its way out her throat.
He drags her arm away, shaking his head solemnly at her. "I want to hear you." He quickens his pace, drawing a shocked gasp from the girl. "I want to know what I'm doing to you."
"Please, please I'm —" Satowa throws her arm out like a child, begging for him to hold her. She doesn't know what she's feeling, but it’s strong, like a jug full to the brim. Like a chalice that's about to spill.
He responds immediately, wrapping one arm around her waist and holding her to his chest. The other hand goes faster and faster till Satowa bends, throwing her head back with a scream.
"Yes, yes. I'm so—" She's barely making any sense. "I don't know—I feel—yes, there, right there—" She pushes down on his fingers herself, feeling them touch a place that has her mouth hang open wordlessly.
Taking the cue, he searches for it and presses, deeper into her than before and Satowa screams, muscles rippling under her skin. She clenches her teeth, letting the wave send her body in a frenzy. It's over in a flash.
Satowa slumps in his arms, head thudding loudly against his chest. She's still for a moment.
"Hey." Kudou breaks the silence, wrapping an arm around her tighter. "You okay?"
She exhales, slowly blinking her eyes open to his worried gaze. Satowa taps on his shoulder, dragging him to her.
"Kiss." She commands like a petulant child. He replies, grinning, slowly rolling her lips into his mouth, rubbing her back in a motion that almost lulls her to sleep.
"You're so beautiful," he says, playing with the strands of her hair that fall over his shirt. "The prettiest."
Satowa flushes, swatting at his hand before noticing something hard touch her core. She shudders on instinct, looking up at his sheepish gaze.
"We should...uhh...” Satowa offers vaguely, though she really doesn't know what to do.
"I'll...take care of it later." He replies, embarrassed.
"But we could—" He puts a finger over her lips, wincing in pain as she moves over him.
"Not yet," he groans, reaching down to kiss her desperately. "Today was just for you. I wanted you to see the depth of my feelings. Just what I want to do to you."
Her eyes darken again, she yanks him down by his collar, kissing a chain up his throat. He gulps.
"Then teach me next time," she touches the tent forming in his jeans. He whimpers, rubbing instinctively into her palm. "So I can understand what I want to do."
He nods frantically before moving away from her to breathe. It takes them both a moment to gather themselves before they decide to move. He helps Satowa off the table. Her feet wobble uncontrollably, an uncomfortable space forming between her legs. She grunts, smoothing the pleats of her skirt.
"Wanna play something?" Kudou gestures to the Koto, tapping at his watch. “We have another half hour left."
Though she'd love to just go up to her room and shower, Satowa can't deny the excitement in his eyes. She smiles. "Fifteen minutes."
His grin is the widest she's seen since the day he confessed.
They spend more of their time fooling around rather than really playing, not that Satowa minds.
Satowa doesn't really like sweet things, she concludes, unless it comes wrapped like a Christmas present under a tree in the form of a bright haired, bright smiled boy.
A candy named Kudou Chika.

The Lunar New Year: A Celebration of Tradition and Renewal Shaina Tranquilino February 10, 2024
Tumblr media
The start of a new year is always an exciting time. It brings with it a sense of hope, possibility, and the opportunity for a fresh start. For billions of people around the world, this renewal takes place during the Lunar New Year. Also known as Chinese New Year or Spring Festival, the Lunar New Year is celebrated by various Asian communities worldwide. It follows the lunar calendar and typically falls between late January and mid-February. This vibrant festival lasts for 15 days and is marked by colourful decorations, delicious food, family gatherings, and age-old traditions.
One of the most iconic symbols associated with the Lunar New Year is the zodiac animal. Each year in the lunar cycle corresponds to one of twelve animals – rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep/goat/ram, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. These animals are believed to influence personality traits and predict fortunes for individuals born in their respective years. In 2024, we will bid farewell to the hopeful Year of the Rabbit and welcome the strong Year of the Dragon.
Preparations for Lunar New Year begin weeks in advance as families clean their homes from top to bottom to sweep away any misfortune from the previous year. This cleaning ritual symbolizes a fresh start and invites good luck into their lives. Decorations play a significant role too; red lanterns are hung outside houses to ward off evil spirits while paper cutouts featuring auspicious phrases adorn windows and doors.
Food plays an integral part in Lunar New Year celebrations. Families gather around tables filled with sumptuous dishes that hold both symbolic meaning and cultural significance. Some popular culinary delights include dumplings (symbolizing wealth), fish (representing abundance), rice cakes (for prosperity), and oranges (a symbol of good luck). The reunion dinner on Lunar New Year's Eve is a cherished tradition where family members come together to share a meal and exchange blessings for the upcoming year.
One of the highlights of Lunar New Year is undoubtedly the lion and dragon dances. Colourful lion costumes are donned, accompanied by the thundering beats of drums and cymbals, as performers mimic the movements of these mythical creatures. The dance is believed to bring good fortune and scare away evil spirits. Fireworks also illuminate the night sky during this festive period, symbolizing warding off bad luck and welcoming prosperity.
Another cherished tradition during Lunar New Year is giving red envelopes or "hongbao." These small, red packets contain money and are gifted to children, unmarried adults, and employees as a symbol of good luck and blessings for a prosperous year ahead. It's an act of generosity that fosters joy and excitement among recipients.
Beyond the festivities itself, Lunar New Year holds deep cultural significance. It serves as an occasion for families to honour their ancestors through prayers and offerings at ancestral altars. This reverence for one's heritage strengthens familial bonds, instills values, and preserves traditions across generations.
While celebrations may differ slightly from country to country or region to region, the spirit of unity, hopefulness, and renewal remains constant throughout Asia during this auspicious time. Regardless of nationality or ethnicity, Lunar New Year has become increasingly embraced globally as people recognize its universal appeal in bringing communities together.
Lunar New Year is a vibrant festival that encapsulates centuries-old traditions while embracing new beginnings. It is a time when families come together, wishes are made for prosperity and happiness abound. As we enter another lunar cycle with the arrival of the Year of the Dragon in 2024, let us celebrate diversity and cherish our shared humanity through this beautiful celebration that unites us all. Happy Lunar New Year!

National Banana Day
Orange you glad I didn’t say banana? Enjoy some banana based treat like banana bread, a banana split, or even banana punch, and tell some terrible jokes.
National Banana Day is a bit like a heady mix of April Fool’s Day and Halloween (of course, without the trick or treating and vandalism) and with a helpful portion of healthy eating thrown in for good measure!
So, get ready to Go Bananas on National Banana Day!
History of National Banana Day
National Banana Day is a yearly event that is aimed at celebrating bananas in every conceivable sense of the word–because the banana is certainly a fruit worth celebrating!
While bananas are believed to have originated in Southeast Asia, mainly in India. They made their way west by Arab conquerors in 327 BC, and eventually bananas ended up in Europe. By the 1870s, bananas made their way to the Caribbean with missionaries, where the bananas were originally used for micro crops (which means growing one crop that helps another crop to grow). Eventually, though, bananas became a lucrative crop in their own right.
The popularity of bananas in the West grew throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s. As they became more affordable and less exotic, bananas were added to special dishes like the banana split, or used in baking recipes like banana bread.
Regarding the origins of National Banana Day, it is known that every year students at many prestigious American universities use National Banana Day as a way of celebrating this humble fruit as a lunchbox standard. On this day, they eat and share weird and wonderful banana concoctions (banana punch, anyone?), they dress as bananas and they generally go a bit…well…nuts.
And bananas too, of course.
National Banana Day is the perfect day to find solace in this world-renowned fruit that is useful and beneficial on so many levels. Happy National Banana Day!
National Banana Day Timeline
327 BC
Bananas are brought from East to West
Arab conquerors bring this yellow fruit when Alexander the Great sends his armies to descend upon India.
1516
Bananas make a debut in the Caribbean
Brought by a Portuguese monk missionary, Friar Thomas de Berlanga, bananas reach the New World.
1834
Mass production of bananas begins
Banana trees are planted and production begins on a larger scale, especially in the Caribbean.
1907
First Banana Split is made
At his restaurant in Wilmington, Ohio, Ernest R. Hazard creates this new ice cream treat, the Banana Split which he hopes will attract college students to his shop.
1930s
Banana Bread is invented
The first Banana Bread recipe is popularized when baking soda comes on the market in the United States.
How to Celebrate National Banana Day
Celebrating National Banana Day seems like a great time to get creative and enjoy a big load of fun! After all, there aren’t many days in the year when it is allowed to legitimately goof off and also have a little fruit-based fun, so why not take a (banana) leaf out of the students’ book and go a little bit bananas today?
Consider these ideas for celebrating National Banana Day:
Make a Banana Treat
Get creative in the kitchen and enjoy what monkeys have known all along–the banana is a fabulous food! Try these delicious treats to eat alone or share with friends:
Banana Split. A classic American tradition, the banana split uses the two halves of a sliced banana, some scoops of ice cream (usually one of each vanilla, chocolate and strawberry), and toppings such as hot fudge, whipped cream, nuts and cherries.
Banana Bread. Although the same recipe will bake more quickly when poured into muffin tins, there is something special about a dense loaf of warm banana bread. No matter what shape they are in, this is a great way to use up bananas that have gotten a bit over-ripe or brown, because over ripe bananas are sweeter.
Bananas Flambe. This French Caribbean treat is made from peeled banana halves fried in oil and then coated with rum and sugar. Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, of course, it makes a delightful and dramatic show of a simple food!
Chocolate Covered Bananas. Channel that inner Arrested Development character (Bluth family, anyone?) by freezing some bananas and dipping them into chocolate–add nuts too!
Host a Banana Party
Throwing a party for National Banana Day is a great way to observe and celebrate this occasion. And certainly it’s not hard to decorate with a banana theme! Just make sure everything is yellow and green, including paper plates, napkins, balloons, tablecloths and streamers.
For an activity that doubles as a snack, provide a chocolate dipping station (aka fondue) or chocolate fountain where guests can dip slices of banana. For extra fun, supply other items for dipping, such as sprinkles, small candies, or mini marshmallows.
Learn Fun Facts About Bananas
In honor of National Banana Day, it might be a fun idea to share some information and facts about bananas with family and friends! Here are some bits of trivia to get started with:
A banana is technically not a fruit, it’s really a berry! This has to do with the fact that the seeds are located inside the flesh rather than on the outside.
Because they contain so much of the isotope Potassium-40, bananas are technically radioactive. The good news is that they can’t harm a person unless they are eating around 700 or more bananas per day for their entire lifetime.
Bananas cannot be grown simply from a seed, which means they are technically “sterile”. Instead, in order to propagate bananas, a piece from another banana plant has to be split and then grown, sort of like cloning.
The growth of popularity of bananas can be partially attributed to Jules Verne, the American author who wrote about the fruit in his book Around the World in 80 Days, which brought them to the forefront of many people’s minds.
Try Some New Recipes for National Banana Day
Other treats that can be served at a banana party, or simply taken to the office to share with coworkers, include banana muffins or banana bread (same recipe, but muffins are faster to bake and a bit easier to serve). Bananas also make a delicious and healthy additive to milkshakes or smoothies, they can be sliced up and put on top of a bowl of cereal in the morning, or they can be mashed up and put into pancakes.
Banana cake, banana ice cream, banana splits or banana pudding are all delicious and delightful recipes that can be enjoyed in honor of National Banana Day. Or try out a classic frozen banana dipped in chocolate as mentioned above.
Another treat made with bananas was also rumored to be a favorite of the pop singer, Elvis Presley, which was the peanut butter and banana sandwich
Listen to a Banana Playlist
There is no better day than National Banana Day to get jamming with a fruit-focused playlist on Spotify or another music hosting website. Play it at the above-mentioned Banana Party or listen alone. Try out a few of these songs or add a few other creative ones:
Day O [The Banana Boat Song] (1956) by Harry Belafonte
Thirty Thousand Pounds of Bananas (1974) by Harry Chapin
Yes, We Have No Bananas (1923) by Louis Prima
Hollaback Girl (2004) Gwen Stefani
Apples and Banana (1985) by Raffi
Banana in Your Fruit Basket (1991) by Bo Carter
Apples, Peaches, Bananas and Pears (1967) by The Monkees
Tell Some Banana Jokes
Get a little silly and have a laugh (or groan) with friends or family using a variety of banana jokes like these:
What kind of key can open a banana? A Mon-key!
Why did the banana go to the doctor? It wasn’t peeling well.
Why are bananas never lonely? Because they come in bunches.
What’s the easiest way to make a banana split? Cut it in half!
What do bananas say when they answer the phone? “Yellow?”
National Banana Day FAQs
Is there a National Banana Day?
Yes! National Banana Day is the day that people all over choose to celebrate everything to do with this delicious and nutritious yellow fruit.
When is National Banana Day?
National Banana Day is celebrated on the third Wednesday of April each year, so the date changes with the calendar.
Are Bananas good for you?
Emphatically yes! Tasty and nutritious, bananas contain fiber, protein, potassium, vitamins, manganese and more.
Do Bananas grow on trees?
Well, sort of. Though they appear to be trees, the plants that bananas grow on are actually classified as herbs that form an underground stem, called a rhizome. But technically, it’s not a tree!
How to keep Bananas fresh?
Keep your bananas in a cool, dry place. To keep them from getting overripe, bananas can be stored in the refrigerator.

Happy 58th Birthday Singapore! 🎉🇸🇬🎊 (9 August 2023)
Some mascots were featured in the Singapore's National Day Parade 2023! This is a post containing a short description of the mascots seen in NDP. (included links to official websites for more information)
Mascots spotted in chronological order: Sharity and Friends, Water Wally and Sally and Singa the Lion.

(From left to right: Flappy the Pigeon, Spikey the Hedgehog, Buddy the Dog, Sharity, Felicity the Cat, Cheeky the Monkey)
The group of mascots were spotted during the first performance (or Act?), dancing near the stage!
Sharity (the pink Elephant in the image above) is the Community Chest mascot, and was first introduced in 1984! His name is a combination of the words "share" and "charity".

Water Wally was created in 2005, and is the mascot of the Public Utilities Board (also known as Singapore's National Water Agency). Water Sally is the younger sister of Wally and was introduced in 2020. This year is also PUB's 60th anniversary!

The Emcee even mentioned his name! ("Oh, remember Singa the Lion? Everyone say HI SINGA!!!!") He was first spotted on a float, depicting one of the Total Defence Pillars, Psychological Defence.
Singa the Lion was introduced in 1982 as the National Courtesy Campaign’s (NCC) mascot. In 2014, he received the biggest redesign, which I remember seeing him most in during my primary school years!

The drive to the airport saw us drive past numerous roadside traders, all just trying to make a living. The Victoria Falls airport itself
Is quiet modern however someone forgot to turn the water and air-conditioning on. When using the bathroom an attendant waits at the exit to pour water over your hands after you have soaped them up good and proper. The air-conditioning is another thing. Basically I do not think they have any. Could just be because of the load sharing that all Africa endures.
The flight was smooth and we were picked up at the airport by staff who whisked us away to a huge motel where we quickly unpacked and headed to the Irish pub within. Now no air-conditioning is one thing but an Irish bar without Guinness and for that matter sells only one type of beer is hard to accept, but we did. The drop they offered was not to bad so one led to two and on it went until we decided to order some tea. Seeing the pride of the menu was the Guinness pie we ordered such only to be told sold out. Not to worry we tried Irish stew only to be told that they no longer sold Irish stew.
Moving on we ordered a steak and lamb but it was so tough basically went to bed hungry but happy. Hahah
We had to be at the airport on Saturday morning at 6am and like good little tourists did so only to find the tour did not start until 8:30am. Not happy but eventually on our way stopping half way to do a local market where you could barter and barter. Love bartering knowing I really will not buy unless I get my price.
Arrived at the resort, Ivory Tree” which is located in the middle of a National park. This place is beautiful and everything you could ask for. Our bed is bigger then our room at home with the shower outdoors and a balcony that allows total privacy while you watch the locals bird life and monkeys. The monkeys are really friendly but you can not leave anything unattended. The welcome meal was full of flavours and treats and became heaven when for dessert you are offered an ice-cream in a cone.
Our first safari saw us drive for kilometres where we saw warthogs, giraffes, zebra, impala, hippos and water bucks along with an amazing selection of bird life. The guide tells us that because the grass is so high we could not see the cats that roam the grounds. Hopefully as we do the other tracks we will see other animals.
Back at base around 8pm they threw a boma (barbecue with huge fires for everyone with the food styles huge. As the oldies we are however we retreated to our bed around 9pm to dream of what we had seen and enjoyed over the last few days.
“What the hell is that” as we were called at 5am to again head out on our second safari. Very dark to start but as the light appeared we came across the standard zebras and impalas prior to seeing our first elephants. Sadly they were high up on a hillside hiding within the tress. Moving on we came across a “ conspiracy” of giraffes and spent nearly half an hour sitting around while they ate. At no time are you allowed to use your car when so close to any wild animal. Happy to sit and take photos.
Back at our camp we were late for breakfast after which we both had a nanny nap. Hopefully in tonight’s safari we will see some lions and cheetahs.

Top 101 Songs of 2022
2022 has been an exceptional year for new music and as always, I thought I would share with you my favourite songs of the last 12 months. Unlike my albums list, this one is unranked as this isn’t necessarily what I think are the best songs of the year, but more the songs that have ultimately come to soundtrack my 2022. Also, I find it impossible to favour songs over one another half the time – these are simply different tunes for different moods.
In this year’s playlist are plenty of lesser-known gems from some of my favourite new discoveries, the year’s best album cuts, my favourite collaborations, guilty pleasures and, of course, some of 2022’s biggest singles and club bangers. As always for the sake of diversity, I’ve kept it to strictly one song per artist (excluding a couple who are also included on other tracks as features).
Now I know what you’re thinking, and the answer is yes – as the official Sound of the Summer for 2022 here in the UK, Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush is included, despite the fact it was originally released in 1985. Also, the playlist is 101 songs this year rather than the standard 100, as a certain Miss Simz came along very late in the day and needed to be included. So this year you get a bonus track!
Listen to the Playlist:

Sonny Carisi ~ It Reminded Me of You
the inspiration for this was literally a Ben & Jerry's ad on my facebook Not spon but B&J if you wanna sponsor me hit me up ada!Sonny x Detective!Reader A non-covid world all errors are my own v sorry words: 1365
Tumblr media
It felt like weeks since you’d actually spent quality time with Sonny. You didn’t even have to be doing anything you could just sit next to him while he sat on his phone for hours just as long as you were actually with him, that’s all you cared about. It was so much easier when you were both working as detectives, sure you were working and being professional but you were just with him more often than not.
Now that he’s an ADA however, it feels like your schedules just never line up. And yes of course you still get to work with him it’s just not the same level.
You texted Sonny earlier in the day to see how his workload was going, hoping he’d be home at a reasonable hour. It was Friday and you had the full weekend off, not even on call. Liv even promised the only way you’d get called in was if it was a matter of national security. She’d seen how down and exhausted you had been lately and she wasn’t having it - Mama Benson will not let anything happen to her people.
When Sonny replied saying he’d managed to plead out his most pressing cases and that he see you at his place for an actual home-cooked meal and a weekend of doing nothing, you felt yourself burst with happiness.
You were packing up your stuff for the night saying goodbye to Kat and Amanda as they walked out when your phone rang.
A dopey grin spread across your face like always and Fin rolled his eyes, heading into Liv’s office.
“Hey Handsome, I’m just packing up my stuff should be at yours within the hour”
“Doll-“ you knew that tone, you knew it was gonna be bad, something had come up “I’m so sorry Hadid just handed me about 8 files that all are being arraigned on Monday, I’m gonna have to put a rain check on that meal” it wasn’t just going to be a rain check on the meal though, you knew Sonny and you knew he was going to work over the weekend. He put so much pressure on himself to make sure he did well and got the justice the victims deserved that he would exhaust himself on his only weekend off in about 3 months.
Tears welled in your eyes, you looked to the ceiling and blinked them away, determined not to let any fall.
Taking a deep breath to steady your voice before replying, “it’s okay Son really, work is more important”
“Nothing is more important than you Doll” you smiled sadly at his words
“I love you Sonny, it’s okay there will be more dinners and lazy weekends”
“Are you sure?”
“Of course bub, I love you” you reassured him.
“I love you too Doll, I’ll be home as early as I can”
Home.
It wasn’t official but you had basically been living at his apartment lately in an attempt to see each other a little more.
You hung up the phone, throwing it a little aggressively on your desk as Fin and Liv came out of her office. With tears still in your eyes, you sat down and looked up at the two of them.
“y/n...” Olivia started, she knew your plans with Sonny had fallen through, she always just knew.
“Don’t Liv. Please. Because if you say anything I’m gonna cry and I won’t be able to stop” you sighed your voice cracking slightly
“Do you wanna go for a drink? I’m sure phoebe won’t mind” Fin smiled sadly
“N-no” you cleared your throat “no I’m fine I’ll just get some more paperwork done here. You go home”
“Nope, you are not staying here. Go home y/n, get some rest” Liv pulled you up from your best wrapping an arm around you
“Sometimes I just wish he was still here” you whispered
“I know... me too...” Liv sighed
You said goodbye to Fin and Liv out the front of the precinct, reassuring them both that you were in fact okay and grabbed a cab back to Sonny’s apartment.
“Actually just let me out here… Thanks” you smiled to the driver, handing over the money and jumping out of the cab and walking straight into the 7/11.
You walked around the small 7/11 store trying to decide what you wanted. At this point you didn’t really feel like anything, you just wanted Sonny. You spotted the ice cream and well if you weren’t going to get to spend the night with Sonny at least you could spend it with Ben & Jerry. You took your time scanning the different flavours, a very important decision.
Cookie dough...Strawberry cheesecake...Chunky Monkey...
Then your eyes saw it. You grabbed the pint of ice cream and paid, quickly walking up to Sonny’s apartment.
Tumblr media
Sonny rubbed his face in exhaustion and sadness. It felt like he hadn’t made any progress in the past hour on any of the cases he had been handed just before he was about to head out the door. He’d had such a plan for the weekend. Tonight he was going to cook your favourite meal and spend the night on the couch watching whatever stupid romcom you could find on Netflix. He planned to take you out on Saturday, walks in the park and maybe the art gallery and then Sunday, his favourite day, he was going to let you sleep in as long as you wanted and make you your favourite breakfast in bed and spend the day doing absolutely nothing. He was going to turn your phones off and spend the day lying in bed, order in any food you guys wanted because it was going to be the last day of just the two of you for probably a while. And now it was all gone to shit because of these cases in front of him.
Sonny loved being an ADA but right now he wished he never left the NYPD. Groaning as his phone pinged with a message he looked at it. It was Liv.
I know you are busy but please go home to girlfriend and get some rest, she needs you
Sonny frowned and typed out his reply
is she okay?
she just misses you Sonny and knowing you, you miss her too
how’d you know i was even still here?
The reply was just a screenshot of Liv’s find my friend's app. Sonny let out a laugh and sent back a heart before packing up his stuff and heading home.
When Sonny finally walked through the door of his apartment it was just before 10pm. Much earlier than you’d expected him. You shot up from the couch when you heard someone at the front door.
“Hey Doll” Sonny smiled putting his briefcase down at the door and shrugging his suit jacket off, letting it fall to the floor without a care in the world
“Sonny!” you ran to him and all but jumped in his arms. It felt silly but you really had missed him.
“I’m sorry Doll” he mumbled into your hair
“what for?”
“for messing up our plans, I feel like I just keep cancelling everything” he sighed
“hey” you pulled back from the hug and cupped his face making him look at you “do not feel bad. I understand, your job is important. Hell, how many times have I been called away? This is just how it is, but I’d rather only spend 5 minutes with you than a lifetime with someone else”
“I love you so much doll” Sonny blushed brushing his lips against yours “I’ll have to work a bit tomorrow but I’ll get everything done and then it’s just you and me all day Sunday” he held his pinky up to you “pinky promise” you grinned wrapping your finger around his. Sonny kissed your hand before leading you over to the couch. “now who replaced me tonight?”
“Chris Evans” you grinned flopping down onto the chair. Sonny reached for the ice cream on the coffee table “oh, and Ben and Jerry”
“Cannoli flavoured?”
“It reminded me of you” you whispered, snuggling into his side.

Sturgeon General - “Live the Life” Boycott Radical Records 1999 Third Wave Ska / Reggae
Although the bio from this group's Facebook page is kinda long, it really seems to capture a lot of the irreverent essence of being a small-time touring ska band in the 90s:
The decade of the 90’s was a distant time: the internet was in its infancy, “texting” was unheard of and climate change…was still a myth. Seattle grunge may have been an institution, but close on its heels SKA music was making waves. Nowhere else was this more evident than along the somewhat obscure, conservative Wasatch Front in Utah where the likes of Swim Herschel Swim, Stretch Armstrong, Insatiable and Sturgeon General were whipping crowds into a frenzy on a nightly basis. Formed in the early nineties by front-man and bari-saxophonist Craig Waddell, Sturgeon General epitomized the cozy underground followings SKA had generated around the country. In direct opposition to grunge’s baleful dirges and angst-filled bravado, SKA proffered a carefree, hyperactive outlet of brass energy underlying its reggae-on-steroids tempo. The band filtered many members through its fraternity over the years, but staples Zach Griffen, Bill Hosack, Ken Marvel, Devin Affleck, Joe Kaufman, Pablo Anderson, Nate Robinson, and Richard (Phish) McCallister were welcome anchors for a band that eventually toured for more than four years nationally while promoting two albums of original material.
Sturgeon began playing at Salt Lake City’s Bar-and-Grill (9th south), Ashbury Pub and their ever-staple gig at Burt’s Tiki Lounge. In the Sundance burrow known as Park City, Sturgeon regularly played to sellout rooms at The Alamo and Jammin’ Salmon where they attracted their manger, Ben Rosch. The energy of performances were electric and it was often difficult to determine who was more wired: the band or the ‘skankin’ crowds, as many a busted stage floor can testify to! Fan favorites Mojave, Edge of the Knife and Shut Up seldom left the dance floor empty or dry from sweat and spilled beers. One of the great advantages of watching Sturgeon play was that fans would sweat out as much as they imbibed, making the bartenders happy while accounting for an intense aerobic exercise session.
Life on the road was filled with all of the glory, frustration and insanity that many have come to associate with the rock-star life. Sturgeon General wandered far from Utah, frequenting the east coast and making a name for themselves in small college towns and metropolises alike, gaining fans wherever they went.
How crazy you ask? Band highlights from the road include streaking the campus at Mount Holyoke (a conservative women’s college), performing semi-regularly at the SKA Brewery in Durango Colorado, getting their own beer named after them by the Mt. Olympus Brewery: Sturgeon General Stout, 4th of July gig at the VFW in San Antonio, Texas with Monkey (band), and touring the east coast when 1999’s hurricane Floyd struck the region making for a crazy set of weeks! Sturgeon also recorded a radio commercial for Corona beer in the late 90’s featuring their song “Saturday” that teased with vaulting them into the national spotlight. Then there’s the time tenor player Jacob(his body still painted green from an Incredible Hulk Halloween costume, and currently lead in the E street band), nearly drove the tour van off the road in a blinding snowstorm. Kicked out of hotels, stiffed by club/bar owners, fights, music label disputes, out of money, getting lost; all in a day’s work for the indefatigable touring SKA band! Through it all, Sturgeon General endures.
Always particularly enjoy reading about bands that come from strait-laced places like Utah. It's just fun to imagine moms and dads and clergymen losing their cool because of the combined sequences of musical notes and words they just heard. Just a funny thing to imagine someone being pissed off about. There's something to the idea of a thing being cool and attractive because the people in charge find it objectionable and uncouth. Controversy rocks, and the more uptight a place is, the easier it is to rustle its jimmies. And at the end of the day, that's just plain ol' fun, right? A tale as old as time, really.
This silly song appeared on two albums in 1999: Sturgeon General's eponymously titled second and final album, and Radical Records' Boycott Radical Records various artist compilation. Not really sure why or how this particular song ended up on a Radical comp since SG never released anything through them, but it happened!
I guess the most striking and interesting thing about “Live the Life”—besides its "Dueling Banjos" open(??? 😂)—is that while "third wave ska" and "ska-punk" are terms that tend to get used interchangeably, this third wave ska song brings all the speed of a skatepunk type of jam, but without any of the actual punkiness; there's no scratchy guitars, no bratty vocals, and no fast-mashed drums. But it has fun breaks from all of that breakneck speed that see the song suddenly shifting in and out of varied bouts of chilled-out reggae grooviness.
Maybe you find Sturgeon General's choice to use this song as the title track to their second album to be a bit odd, but you gotta remember that they were primarily a touring band, and I don't think it's all that hard to imagine them tearing down every venue that they wound up playing it at. Gotta be a fun one to experience live for sure 😊.

i used to be a pretty passive guy, since before i was a goddamn mastermind in that castle of mine, i came up in half the time as these lame fucks. you can't rush that greatness, that mansion where my maid lives.  i think i’m okay | machine gun kelly, yungblud, travis barker : i guess it's just my life and i can take it if i wanna but i cannot hide in hills of California because these hills have eyes, and i got paranoia. i hurt myself sometimes, is that too scary for you? watch me, take a good thing and fuck it all up in one night. catch me, i'm the one on the run away from the headlights.   going through changes | eminem : i lock myself in the bedroom, bathroom, napping at noon. yeah, dad's in a bad mood, he's always snapping at you. marshall, what happened at you? can't stop with these pills and you've fallen off with your skills and your own fans are laughing at you. it become a problem you're too pussy to tackle, get up. be a man, stand, a real man woulda had this shit handled.  numb little bug | em beihold : do you ever get a little bit tired of life, like you're not really happy but you don't wanna die? like you're hanging by a thread but you gotta survive? like your body's in the room but you're not really there? like you have empathy inside but you don't really care? like you're fresh outta love but it's been in the air? am i past repair?  wake me up when september ends | green day : here comes the rain again falling from the stars, drenched in my pain again. becoming who we are as my memory rests but never forgets what i lost. wake me up when september ends.  pretty toxic revolver | machine gun kelly : i feel his pain because it probably won't be until the day i die that they love us, but trust, every nomination i don't get, every list that i ain't on is a reminder of why i wrote songs in the first place - as a way to escape where I came from.

Today is the 1 year AO3 anniversary of Slow Show by @mia-ugly. I am beyond grateful that this experience (and it is an experience) has existed in my life for a year and felt it needed commemorating. 🎂
I’m not a creator but I made this playlist for me, so I could take the fic with me, have it with my eyes closed, while driving -- you get it. Today seems like an appropriate day to share it.
It’s a. It’s a lot. Excessive you might even say. Tumblr will only give you the first 100 songs in this, so, Spotify will fulfill you (or overwhelm you). If you hit my username on the playlist, there are separate playlists for each chapter.
This is also on Apple Music, if that’s your jam, just hit me up and I’ll send you the link.
🎉 Happy Slow Show Day!! 🎉
