when summit poster boy hwang intak's car breaks down in the school parking lot, it sets off a chain of events that leads to you, someone he was perhaps always meant to find. the only problem is that the two of you are far from the ideal couple, and your peers are apt to keep that status quo.

SUMMER (RISING JUNIORS).

INTAK'S eyelids stuck together like glue, but the sharp morning light beaming into his face pried them open. The heavy embroidered curtains on either side of his bed were violently ripped open and a large weight launched onto the bed beside him, practically sending his body flying into the air.

"What the fu—?" Intak cursed, sitting up in bed and trying to get a grasp of reality. His room erupted into delighted cackles—hyenas, if you would—and he dug the soles of his palms into his eyes with a groan. "I hate you guys."

A hand clapped down on his shoulder with a warm squeeze. "If it weren't for us, you'd be sleeping the day away," came Taeyang's voice. Of course, he had been the one to invade Intak's bed space.

"That was the idea," Intak whined, lips forming a pout as he rested up against the headboard.

Keeho chuckled from the foot of the bed. "Yeah, yeah. Well get up! We're gonna get dim sum."

Intak rolled his head to rest on Taeyang's shoulder. "The dim sum place doesn't start serving until 11, assholes."

Jiung appeared from the other side of the room where he had been tying the curtain back with the cord into a neat bow. His face was twisted into a distasteful frown as he surveyed the clothes hanging off of almost every piece of furniture in the room. "Okay and? It's 10:30, sleeping beauty."

"I was gonna put those away," Intak said through a yawn, blindly gesturing toward the three different jackets hanging on the bedpost. Jiung's frown deepened, nose wrinkled, as he plucked the jackets up and dutifully headed for the closet.

"Why are you so tired anyway, dude?" Keeho asked. He had pulled his phone out from his pocket, most likely replying to his parents to tell them he wouldn't be headed to the company building today. "We literally ended our movie marathon early yesterday because you said you wanted to sleep or something."

That triggered something in the back of Intak's mind, and he removed his head from Taeyang's shoulder to feel around the blankets, sheets, pillows, for his—bingo. He snatched his phone up, molten hot from overuse, and powered it on. Luckily, it hung onto life at just 6% battery; goddamn, he must have fallen asleep while on call with Yn last night.

…while on call with Yn last night. The thought brought a smile to his face, one that Taeyang definitely noticed.

The older Choi cousin poked the small divot in Intak's cheek from his smile. "Aye, what're you smiling about?"

Intak cleared his throat and busied himself with finding his charging cable and letting his phone charge on the nightstand. "The thought of eating all your har gow!" he giggled, abruptly leaping out of bed and heading for the closet that Jiung was busy organizing.

Taeyang squawked after him. "Hey, punk! You better not—"

Intak shooed Jiung out of the closet space before closing the door behind him. He exhaled sharply, fingers massaging his crusty eyes. The smile had yet to disappear from his face.

"I'm hungry."

Yn rolled her eyes, the back of her hand dabbing the sweat from her forehead. "Then get food."

Jongseob groaned melodramatically with his head craned backward at an uncomfortable angle, sweat dripping from his damp orange bangs onto the cement floor of the garage. "But I want ramen."

"I don't understand the problem," she sighed, "there's hot water and packets in—"

"I could use some ramen." Soul perked up from his station. He had his blond hair held by a gray bandana tied cutely at the front.

Now both kids were gazing at her with big, brown puppy eyes and pouts, all practically begging the same thing: they wanted real ramen. Not something out of a plastic bag that could be made in two minutes. They wanted something sit-down, steam-rising, creamy, authentic, expensive. Well, it didn't necessarily have to be expensive. It just had to not be 'instant.'

Yn reached for her phone to check for the time, noting the new notification on the lock screen, as well.

Suppressing the smile on her face into a smirk, she decided that the three of them had been working far too long to be considering this as summer break. And as much as they needed the money and time, they also desperately needed down time. Her mom would be able to reopen the shop later in the afternoon; business had been slow anyway.

"Okay, fine!" She said, which was immediately followed by cheers and the clinking of tools falling to concrete. "But you both stink, so go home and freshen up while I close up here, okay?"

They didn't need to be told twice. Soul was already wrestling his bicycle out from the corner of the garage, and Jongseob passed by her with a large grin on his face to get to the inner office. "Thanks, Yn!"

Yn let her smile come out completely as she hummed her acknowledgement.

Yn could only sit there and grin down at her phone screen for a moment. In the background, Soul and Jongseob were arguing about who got to use the shower at Yn's place first, since it was the closest house to the shop. Their sounds faded the further they rode away from the shop, and Yn typed her reply.

Then she powered her phone off and tucked it into the back pocket of her cargo pants, skipping around the garage to close the shop down. If Jongseob and Soul were here, she would most definitely get an earful. But good thing they weren't here, right?

When she finally got back home, she found Jongseob nose-deep in his phone game on the couch, his orange hair dampened over his forehead and a towel wrapped around his shoulders. Shota was just strolling out of the bathroom, steam trailing after him, while running a towel through his own hair. She quickly found a fresh set of clothes in her room before hopping into the shower herself.

As she clipped her wet hair up and out of the way, she saw the flicker of something across her phone screen on the bathroom counter. Again, and again, and—

Knock knock knock knock knock— "I'M HUNGRYYYY," Jongseob whined from outside the bathroom door.

Yn rolled her eyes and tucked her phone into her back pocket before ripping the bathroom door open. She sent a firm look at him that said 'Really?'

Jongseob beamed sheepishly. "Haha?"

She deadpanned. "Not haha. C'mon now; is Shota ready to go?"

"Mhm," he piped up, skipping toward the front door. He thumped the back of the couch where Soul had replaced him. "Let's go, let's go!"

Yn could only wonder why the kid was so pumped to finally get lunch, but at the same time, she understood that he probably hadn't had something "restaurant"-level in awhile. This was a luxury that could only be afforded to them during moments where time was infinite. And during summer, time seemed to flow like the milky way.

The three of them began the brief trek to the bus stop, since Yn's mom had taken the family car out to run some errands. It wasn't too bad of a walk anyway, and there seemed to always be a bus coming by every ten minutes down in the Hollows.

They would hop off at the stop in the Crossroads shopping center, aiming for the small, yet upscale ramen shop in the corner. Passing through the open doorway, the three friends chorused their greetings to the chef behind the counter before perching on the stools at the bar.

"Man, oxtail sounds so good right now," Soul pouted to himself, hand against his cheek.

Yn glanced at him before turning her own gaze back to the menu in front of her. The oxtail did sound good, but it was a lot more expensive than everything else. Today wasn't even a special occasion either… she'd probably wait until another day. She passed Soul another look, and at his slight frown, she understood that he was under the same mental crisis as she was.

"Shota-yah," she said to him over Jongseob's head. "If you want the oxtail, you should get it. I can help cover for you."

Soul's eyes widened at this. "Oh, no, no, noona! I couldn't do that; no way! I can get it some other time."

"I insist," she said. If she paid for her bowl and the extra for Soul's… it wouldn't be too bad. No, it definitely wouldn't be bad. This was doable.

Guilt flashed across Shota's face, but she could see the yearning there as well. "I dunno…"

Yn nudged Jongseob as an attempt to switch the subject. "What're you thinking of, Seob?"

He cocked a brow at her. "Don't think you're gonna pay for my lunch, too."

"Who said I would pay for your lunch?"

"Hey!"

She laughed, her lips pursing into an amused smile at Jongseob's pinched brows and annoyed expression. "Only kidding… kind of."

Jongseob opened his mouth to say something, but his eyes flickered to something behind Yn, towards the entrance. Yn heard the chatter and laughter pouring in as a large group of teenagers filed into the shop. There were maybe twelve of them in total, all of whom decked out in designer brands and handbags and shoes and fresh manicures. Their hair was silky and styled, bodies adorned in shiny pieces of jewelry.

Summit kids. Well fuck.

They were loud, boisterous. Yn could feel the shift in her friends' demeanors as Jongseob sent the group nasty looks over his shoulder and Soul kept his back firmly toward them. She prayed to whoever was watching her that they wouldn't do anything to ruin their lunch.

The ramen shop was suddenly ten times smaller now.

Yn heard the group's chatter dull down when they realized just who exactly they were to share the shop with. The chatter became louder, laughter became sharper. She didn't need to strain her ears to hear what they were saying, rather, she was putting more energy in trying to tune them out than anything.

"Do you think we can pay the uncle there to kick them out?"

"I don't even think they could afford to tip. Buying this place out shouldn't be difficult."

Buying out a ramen shop? Just because they were in the midst of a couple of Hollows kids… dramatic much?

Yn stilled as she heard the crisp click, click, click of a pair of new shoes approach the bar where she and her friends sat. From her peripheral vision, she caught a slim, smooth hand adorned in tasteful silver rings and a jade bracelet, motioning to the chef behind the counter.

"Excuse me, uncle! I was wondering if my friends and I could… have the room."

A flash of bills. Actually—Yn couldn't even estimate how much was in that girl's hand, but at the sight of it, the uncle immediately began to wave Yn, Jongseob, and Soul off their stools.

Yn gaped at him, and took her first full glimpse of the girl. She looked familiar, no doubt someone from the academy. The girl looked upon the three of them with a blank stare, pretty, manicured hand waving goodbye to them and nodding toward the door.

"We're paying customers, too!" Yn protested to the chef, who only shrugged. She huffed. "You've got to be shitting me."

A loud laugh from behind them—it was from the larger group. She whirled around, nostrils flared. A boy from the group sneered, "You literally have grease stains on your neck. Don't you think you should be cleaner before thinking you could come and dirty a respectable establishment?"

Respectable establishment, my ass, Yn thought. She suppressed the urge to reach up to feel the back of her neck for any lingering stains from earlier while Jongseob ushered both her and Soul out of the door.

They were halfway back down the hill before Yn could even think to say anything. The anger boiling in her blood had simmered down to something akin to disappointment rather than anger. Part of it, she reasoned, that the uncle was only looking out for his best interests. The Summit kids could fund his shop for life if they really wanted to, but her and her friends? Not a chance.

But… she glanced over at Jongseob and Soul who remained quiet as well. It was odd to see Jongseob so quiet, but perhaps he was fuming as she was and trying not to throw a fit.

The sun beat down above them as they walked down the hill, sweat already beginning to drip down the back of her neck. She finally reached behind her neck, on the shirt collar, then caught a glimpse of the car grease staining her fingertips. She felt her neck and cheeks grow hotter in embarrassment.

"I'm sorry guys," she finally said softly, the words too difficult to put power behind. She didn't know how she managed to choke them out. Guilt pooled in her gut, guilt for not being able to stand up for them better and to be able to get her two best friends fed and treated well.

Both Jongseob and Soul hummed their replies incoherently.

She swallowed, holding a hand up over her eyes as she looked up from the ground. "It's okay. I'll just make some ramen at home. It's not oxtail, but…" But what?

Jongseob glared straight ahead. "I hate those fucking entitled little pricks."

Ah, there it was.

Yn pursed her lips together with a nod. "Yeah."

"And don't apologize, Yn," Soul said. "You have nothing to be sorry about."

She swallowed again, but it was a little more difficult this time. "I just wanted you guys to have a good time and to eat well."

Her friends both looked over at her with something glistening in their eyes. "We know," said Jongseob. "Thanks though."

The disappointment fell from them like waves, and Yn couldn't seem to brace for impact quite as well as she hoped she could.

SBS Hyena, episode 1 rewatch (part 2)

I realise I haven't tagged/warned for spoilers, but this will be full of spoilers. I'm sorry.

So the first we see of her… is Kim Hee-sun. Gorgeous hair, beautiful no makeup-makeup face, and...near-bare feet. (This is entirely from Hee-jae's perspective, so his observation of her feet is probably intentional. It’s also not the last time he’ll do it.)

(I assume Hee-jae's writing paeans to her cute turquoise toenails in his note-book.)

I love Hee-sun's oversized white shirt. It’s  interesting that she should wear that, because in the scene just before this, Yoon Hee-jae sheds his shirt in his office and throws it in a bin. And here she is, in a lovely bit of continuity, looking like she might have just picked it off his floor and worn it, along with that cool preppy sweater. 15/10 for style, infinity/10 because she's Kim Hye-soo, and in this house she's everything.

Moving back to daytime —

This is the first time we've heard any reference to Hee-jae being related to a judge, and it's in this unnaturally coy fashion. 

We’re meant to see Hee-jae as a legal force to be reckoned with. He’d have to be, given what we’ve seen so far. Here, he's assuring a result to a client because of who he'll have on his team. He's coasting on Atty Ma's team's work (whether he admits it or not), his own big guns and lots of unearned confidence like any other corporate blowhard. 

I say his confidence is unearned, but he’s probably never had the reason to believe otherwise. He’s a big boy working for one of the big boys - things have never not fallen the way he’s wanted them to, because that’s the way their world functions. Money talks, and they have so goddamn much of it that there is never a real contest. This is the status quo of Yoon Hee-jae’s life, and it’s about to be undone in the most wildly spectacular way possible. 

Yoon Hee-jae has never had to pay his dues or prove his worth - that’s always been for other people to do. Whether he wants to pay his dues or prove his worth…is a different, and more interesting question. He does prove to be smart, thoughtful and deeply strategic as a lawyer later in the show, but we’re not going to see that side of him for a few episodes. 

And then, we find out his grandfather was the former Chief Justice. 

Yoon Hee-jae doesn’t bring this up until Ha Chan-ho brings it up first. It’s not really mentioned up till now, although it gives important context to his success and confidence. He's very comfortable talking about his pull, but he doesn’t talk about the source of the pull, if that makes any sense. I think there are two reasons for this. 

This speaks to a spectacular kind of privilege - this sort of disclosure usually opens doors, but when you’re in that stratosphere of class and breeding, it’s probably declasse to say it out loud, and more than that, it’s unnecessary. People know it and so the doors are always open, 24/7. It’s like the difference between having to tell the maitre’d at The Fat Duck that oh, by the way, you’re Meryl Streep, and you’d really like a reservation, please, and having the table by the window set aside for you every Friday night. 

I also think he wants to be seen as a good, successful lawyer, and not necessarily just Daddy’s boy. That is vital to Hee-jae in a way that seems, again, almost overtly privileged. In a society that is largely only concerned about Getting It, thinking about How You Got It either comes from having the moral backbone of a Hwang Si-mok or the extreme privilege of a Yoon Hee-jae. Those are the two warring forces in Hee-jae - wanting to be known for being a good lawyer, and yet resting on the laurels earned by those before him.

An all-black suit, for a douchey comment about hooking up with one's client's younger sister. That is cackle-worthy in light of what said younger sister does a few episodes down the road. 0/10 for the sister comment, Hee-jae. 

Next up: the prettiest girl ever. 

BOO HYEON A, BEST GIRL, BEST OF ALL. APART FROM JIEUN. 

@thefeastandthefast once said her hair probably smells of raspberries, and that is entirely correct. She is the loveliest and her belted jacket is so chic. (10/10. I dock no points from Ms Boo.)

She, too, is in all-black, like Hee-jae, which positions them similarly against all the other lawyerbots. This dovetails with things we will learn later about both characters. Both are second kids; both come from incredible privilege, and both are the softest marshmallows who will come to love and adore Jung Geum-ja.

I'm constantly amazed by Yoon Hee-jae's total and utter lack of chemistry with anyone other than Women Who Can Step On His Neck. Park Se-jin and Ju Ji-hoon have such a friendly vibe for two very good-looking people. 

Unlike, say.....

THEM. THEM. 

Yet again, this entire encounter feels surreal, in the way the best romances often do. For starters these two aren’t knocking elbows with five other grumpy people looking to do laundry. Yoon Hee-jae doesn’t dress like this, ordinarily. (As an aside, his soft old man cardigan made me giggle. I had at least two bosses who wore cardigans like this, so at least this is somewhat accidentally accurate to me.) I mean, when Ga Gi-hyeok visits him late in the series, he’s wearing a cool bush shirt (thank you @rain-hat) that looks like something Dries van Noten might have put out. (I think it was Gucci, though, I stand to be corrected). All his soft lil sweaters are reserved for the woman he loves.

(He stares at her feet up. Just sayin'.)

(Next up: we're upping the ante, the stakes, and most importantly, the hotness. A violet dress makes its appearance. A man's dignity makes its disappearance. IYKYK)

"When you think about it everyone on this earth is truly dumb, how can someone be defined as being well educated?" I could sense the annoyance in the way she looks at me, how her jaw is tightly clenched to the point where it may just shatter.

"You better stop ruining Ryujins chances" Yeji defends one of her closest friends.

"That's not my fault, she was the one who cheated on the test, so she shall be the one to deal with said punishment" 

"Yeah, and because of you she's been put on the line for debate" 

"I don't see why I should care, it's not my problem" her hands tighten into fists, her figure becomes shaky with my words.

"What are you doing?" My seatmate whispers her eyes wide with concern as she flicks them between me and my long lasting bully Hwang Yeji.

"You know, you've changed. You're now speaking back, that's only gonna put you in more danger" Yeji smirks, not allowing me time to answer the girl to my side.

"Maybe I should teach you some lessons" She smirks, satisfied with herself.

"The fundamental purpose of school is learning, not teaching. Focus on yourself, like I am with myself. Maybe then you'll learn a few things for your closed minded mindset" now it's my turn to smirk as I wipe hers clean off, a curseful scowl leaving her mouth.

"You best watch your back Lim, you never know who could strike you" she stands, dragging the chair away as she goes over to her desk.

"Same goes for you, except, you know who will strike you in the end"

The godforsaken sound of Lias' usually soft voice isn't something I want to be hearing during class. She's sat behind me with her childish group that tends to target me more so than others.

"Y/n, please" the teacher pauses my reading to criticise me "your English, it seems that you have forgotten half of what you've learnt"

Lias snickering and giggling have decided to make themselves present. "Miss Choi, maybe you'd have something to say?" She pauses, her laughter stopping almost immediately.

"Ah, no Mr li" she gives him her signature heart fluttering smile, her eyes narrowing with the smile.

"Very well then" he turns to the board, writing down various words in English with the Korean translation next to them. "Since miss Lim couldn't pronounce these words the correct way… we will go through them together" 

I listen to the classes groaning, however, I myself, I just smile with gratitude. 

"Welldone" Lia grumbles, the sound of something hitting her desk in defeat.

"Says you, you were the one that sounded like a hyena with that psycho giggle. You had me fooled, I could've sworn someone let a monkey into the classroom" she gasps, eyebrows narrowed, knitting together in annoyance.

"At least I don't look like one" she fires back a weak insult.

"That's real mature coming from someone who can't say the simplest of words in english" 

"Girls, stop this" the teacher demands.

"Says the girl who can't hold a stable relationship for more than two days" she huffs, rolling her eyes with a grumpy frown

"Don't look so sad, that face doesn't suit you" I turn around, facing the teacher as he looks at us with disappointment and rage.

"Girls, that's your warning, anything else and you'll be going to the headteacher" he snaps before turning around once again, finishing off a sentence.

"Don't try me" Lia leans forwards, whispering in my ear "it will always end in favour of me" 

"Don't talk to me, it will always end in shambles for you" I speak back, finally being able to focus on the teacher now.

Ryujin

Blabbering, nonsense, bickering. Everyone in the classroom seems to be enjoying themselves after the teacher's big announcement.

He had revealed the test results and being the annoying male he is, he revealed my result, the lowest result of the class. The highest had a score of 97, while me? Only 13.

Me and Ryujin are different in many ways, the main difference being that I wouldn't ruin someone else's chances at success by swapping out the names on our test sheets.

"How does it feel? You know, to get the lowest score in the entire class" Ryujin mocks me, a very playful grin playing like the devil upon her facial features.

"Why are you asking me?"

"Because you got the lowest in the class" 

I shake my head "no, actually you did. You're just lucky the teacher didn't realise your horrible job of scribbling out our names. Though, it would've been funny"

"Excuse me, are you accusing me of cheating?"

"Yes, I'm also accusing you of fraud, you miss Shin, are guilty of fraud" she purses her lips, staring me down.

"You're lying"

"Ouh, I am? Then please explain why the handwriting on my sheet doesn't belong to me, it's an identical match to your handwriting though" I point to the writing in the sheet, it's messy and looks rushed. My handwriting is never rushed.

People say quality over quantity, especially the teachers here, so it comes as no surprise that I try my hardest to make everything at least readable, bare minimum.

"What a coincidence" Ryujin shrugs her shoulders without a single care in the world.

"Yeah, a coincidence, just like your existence" I send her a wink before turning back to her test results, looking down upon them with shame.

Just walking past Chaeryeong was never an option, the girl would side eye you till you're forced to cover your face, or so it felt that way.

The evil deeds in her sick and twisted mind are awful, like right now. I've only just gotten back from the bathroom and my chair is somehow covered in ink.

I was gone for two? three minutes, max.

"Miss Lim, please sit already" the teacher instructs me, watching me intensely as I move around my desk completely, staring down upon the dark substance that seemed to paint the chair it's lifeless color.

It's like a mass murder for pens, like an entire world war lol based off of pens.. it's concerning me. "Ah, Mr Li? Please may I have another chair, this one is covered in-"

"Do I look like I care miss Lim? Just sit so I can dismiss you" I sigh, slowly and carefully sitting on the disgusting chair. 

The laughs of Chaeryeong and her friends for sure didn't go undetected either. It's rather obvious at this point. I turn my head to my right, slowly but surely glaring into Chaeryeong's soul as she just smiles.

"Alright class, you're.. dismissed" he walks out, multiple students following as I just sit in despair, keeping my unwanted emotions locked and hidden away.

Her laughing approaches, it's like a horror movie, just without a murder and an annoying classmate who hates my guts.

"Are you okay down there?" She chuckles, watching me as I sit perfectly still, only moving the parts of me that aren't touching the chair

"I don't know, why don't you come and join me, your royal highness?"

"No can do, I don't touch village folks like you" the corners of her lips curve up by the slightest, a small smile coming into play.

"That's okay, I don't touch spoilt brats either" I give her the same small smile, she raises an eyebrow.

And with that, I smear the pens insides all over her makeup covered face, ruining her look for the day.

Chaeryeong gasps before sulking, eventually storming out of the room to find some spare clothes… I should probably do the same...

I was only helping some other student when the witch in this class had walked past me, sticking her nasty gum in my hair like I'm some bin for her nasty bacteria.

Even the boy I was helping had looked at Yuna in utter disgust. 

"What? It's just some gum, what's the big deal?" She tilts her head, her silent laugh somehow echoes in my ears.

Normally I wouldn't dare speak back to the cunning cow in the room but I just felt the need to do so this time, it's the third time this week and it's only Tuesday!

"What's the big deal? You stuck your nasty gum in my hair. I've seen the way you chew your gum, it's like watching a camel eat" 

"Hey, watch your mouth Lim!" She practically yells, pointing her manicured intex finger at me.

"Only if you learn to shut yours" the boy I was helping had become completely invested in whatever is going down between me and Yuna, a chuckle leaving his lips with every point I make, causing Yuna to look like the real fool here.

"Not only is your breath infecting the perfectly good air in here, but also the words that are leaving your mouth.. they're just as pathetic as you are"

Her facial expression resembled an enraged bull, I could've sworn I saw steam coming from her ears too.

"Shut it Lim" she half yells, not wanting to draw any unwanted attention from passing teachers or student councils. "You could never out do me, why are you even trying?" 

"I'm not trying, I'm succeeding" I respond, furrowing my eyebrows, feeling confused with her incorrect opinion.

"You're just mad that you can't be like me" she spits her words out like an animal, aggressive and pointless.

"Who would wanna be like you? You look and act like a witch. How haven't you been burnt at the stake or drowned like a rat yet?"

SBS Hyena, episode 1 rewatch (part 3)

Today we will look at cute watch ads, the storm before the actual storm and bonus Yoon Hee-jae being expensive.

Hwang Bo-ra is so wonderful in everything she does. Sim Yu-mi has a great sense of style and an equally loud personality, but she feels quite personable. This means she’s quick to make friends and pull them in, which is what puts Jung Geum-ja in Yoon Hee-jae’s circle.

Kindly note her single earring, the contrast of her aqua blazer, her neon pink nails and her lip. Let's put a pin in that comment by her.

(I live for Hee-jae saying he's expensive. I'm sure you are, babe.)

On any other show, their age difference would have been played for hijinks, laughs or a plot point. Ga Gi-hyeok as the bestie might have told his friend he could do much better (untrue). Boo Hyeon-a might have had an entire jealousy arc with her (you know they would have done that.)

Not on this show. This is the first and the last time a named character says anything on the topic. It’s a sometimes grating comic character who makes the comment, which would have been a sneaky way to slide in something mean or judgmental. But there's none of that here. It’s super refreshing. 

And then, total obliteration: 

Kim Hee-sun is luminous, sexy as hell and completely in control. Yoon Hee-jae may have upped the stakes here by turning up and dropping that outrageous line about leaving with him, but Kim Hee-sun does the metaphorical equivalent of cuffing his chin, smirking and saying "Let me show you how it's done, dear boy." Of course he leaves like he's been lassoed.

Ju Ji-hoon is never going to look like this in a show, ever again. I feel like the costuming team sat down with the PD and went, listen, we have an actor-model in the house. Let us at him. Let us put him in gorgeous suits and saturated colours and lots of great lighting.

This is presumably the Gran Bleu, which is where they met twice more, and...the lighting is not like this on those occasions. Here it's cosy, with lots of warmth on their faces, but there are also plenty of shadows. Almost as if to say that romantic lighting also tends to conceal a lot. 

The last time they do meet here, the lights are up, because the show's over, and the things they say and do are so achingly loving that you won't need any romantic pap. Substance over form. 

This entire sequence plays out like a generic, if extremely posh, romance. Form, rather than substance: two beautiful people listening to the same record, cooking in the kitchen, looking at art dressed like they should be in fashion magazines - culminating in this gorgeous windswept kiss with the sun setting and the mountains behind them. HIGH ROMANCE, or rather, what we think high romance should look like.

I say “generic”, because this could be any couple. There is nothing here that is specifically them. It’s stock architecture over the heart of things that Hee-jae loves, but there is nothing else of him, and absolutely nothing of her. Even that kiss on the rooftop is made to look exactly like those ubiquitous East Asian watch commercials with the blurry slow-motion - and it is, because it’s very smart PPL, I’m certain - but it enhances, rather than detracts from the generic quality of this sequence. 

Anyway, the ad film’s coming to an end because…it’s courtroom time. DUN DUN DUN.

━━ a/n: being a '00 liner myself, i've always had a soft spot for kpop '00 liners, and they will somehow end up being my biases. the fic is inspired by a song, and while hyunjin was one of the candidates of my other fic hyena's mc, i decided that he suits the theme of this story better. i will try to finish the story by the end of this month, but it might take longer since i'm also working on hyena and chan's pokemon au. i like to k word myself that way :) inspired by ghost in a flower by yorushika.

“y/n, you’ve got to be kidding me,” said jeno. “this is our last year of high school, and there’s no way you’re not going to prom!”

you only smiled sheepishly at your friends, apologetic but firm with your decision. “i’m sorry guys, but i don’t have a date either. jeno’s going with heejin, jisung with lia, and jaemin and yeji are going together. i don’t want to show up alone, and i don’t want you guys to neglect your partners for me either, because that’d be rude.”

“then you can join us!” yeji said, pulling your arms towards her. “jaemin and i are going as friends anyways, we won’t be neglecting each other!” you smiled at her, but shook your head.

“nah. it would be weird to the other people to see us three.” jaemin only bit his lower lip, but said nothing else. you knew he understood what you meant, and you knew yeji also understood what you meant.

“i’m sorry guys, i made up my mind.” the other four sighed, before finally accepting your decision.

“is there no way we can change your mind?” said jeno. you were quiet for a second, before finally shaking your head.

“no, there’s no way.”

“liar.” jaemin whispered, loud enough for the four of you to hear. the four of you turned to look at him, and you were surprised to see his eyes at you - his gaze sharp as a knife, sending you shivers throughout our whole body.

“there is a way, and we all know it. you just don’t want to say it, and we just don’t want to offend you.”

“cut it out, jaemin,” warned jisung, his usual bright self gone in an instant. “we agreed not to bring it up.” but jaemin ignored jisung’s words.

“until when are you going to continue pretending, y/n?” said jaemin, and you only kept quiet, facing the floor, for you couldn’t find yourself to retort back. you felt tears gathering in your eyes. all this time you thought they didn’t catch on, but they knew, and they’ve been keeping quiet for your sake.

“we know about the promise. you just don’t want to go to prom because you’re too scared to see him with a different girl, are you?” the atmosphere grew heavier, and you heard yeji hiss at jaemin to stop.

“yes, i am.” you lifted your head upwards, looking at them, feeling the tears fall from your eyes. “i am scared to see him with a different girl, breaking his promise with me. is that a bad thing?” and to your surprise, jaemin smiled, while the other three looked at you in surprise. it was when you heard a familiar voice behind you did you finally realize they weren’t looking at you, but rather at who was behind you.

“i think it’s a good thing,” you turned around to find hwang hyunjin in front of you, smiling. you let out a small gasp as he moved forward, taking your hand in his. “i don't know if you know, but i hate breaking promises.”

“What makes you think that you’re worthy of the crown? You’re merely a boy, let alone a king” the younger man feeling an all too familar feeling in the pit of his stomach as he watched his father, the so called king, laugh at the thought of his only son sitting on the throne one day.

“Why is that funny” genuine confusion being heard from his voice as he watched his fathers lap dogs follow suit with laughter. 

“You can’t be serious, you a king? That’ll be the day,” roared one of the middle aged guards, holding his armored stomach trying to surpress the pain of laughter. 

“The day I leave Eden,” sniggers another guard causing the king to errupt in another roar of hearty chuckles.

The young man just waits, he knows his father. He might be a drunk, sloppy king and an even worse father, but he has always listened to his son. Meeting his fathers eyes, the king holds up his hand, already sick of his hyena like guards. 

The throne room was silent, the young man feared that his rapid heartbeat might be heard bouncing off the marble walls. 

“Tell you what boy,” his father starts, struggling as he pushes himself up from his throne. His glass of half drunk wine spilling onto the expensive red carpet, a clear indent being left in the luxurious cushioned throne from under his fathers weight, “You want to be king? Your going to have earn it.”

His father now standing directly in front of him, swaying slightly from under the influence. The young man is only slightly taller than the king, brown meeting brown, the young man can see the intentions behind his fathers eyes. 

‘He doesn’t believe in me.’

“Gain the trust of the folks within the forest. Act like one, live like one, breathe like one,” the young man parts his lips, shaking his head at his father suggestion, ready to object, “and find me The Ruby of The Forest.”

The look in his fathers eyes was nothing other then unwithering determination. A determination that the young man his seening in his fathers eyes many time before at the mention of the ruby. The young man knows what this ruby means to his father, it didn’t surprise him when it was brought up yet again. But never, never has he suggested his son going into the madness of the forest to find it. 

“You do want to be king right?” his father questions already knowing the answer, his son has wanted to be king from the day he was born. He would do anything to be king.

“Of course I do,” the young man nods his head eagarly, his eyes showing a new found courage.

“Then get me that ruby,” his father concludes, patting his son on the shoulder before turning back to his throne, waving his hand, dimissing his son from the room. 

Bearly acknowledging the over-worked men holding the ten ton and ten foot door open of his decent, he stops in his tracks as he hears his fathers voice boom once more.

“You have until the next full moon,” turning around to face his father again, “I want that ruby, Hyunjin.”

Bowing in his fathers direction, Hyunjin’s eyes sparking with determination, his new found aura filling the silently anticipating room, “Of course, your majesty.”

Is this good? I don't know. Am I excited to write this? YES!

This is just a little tease of a series that I have been thinking about for a while now and I finally have the courage to post it. So here it is, ***tada***

This series will include the other Stray Kids members as verious different characters, and maybe some idols too. I’m just excited to share what I have planned for this series with you all!

My 2020 in K dramas (+1 J drama)

I began watching k-dramas in 2018 but I’ve never watched as many shows, Korean or otherwise, as I have in this one. 2020 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. I think what helps me really enjoy this over Bollywood+Malayalam+ American pop culture I grew up with is that a smirk on the wrong character’s face doesn’t make me seethe with rage and want to burn everything down. It’s not like growing up with SRK on screen and then having SRK wannabes leave you with lifelong trauma in reality. I can just move on. It’s removed enough from my everyday life but still familiar in a generic Asian family way. Does that make sense? It’s not perfect and it’s not free of its own harmful stereotypes and narratives, but there’s enough of the good stuff to make you stick around. This year I fell in love with Nana, Kim Hye Soo, Han Yeri, Park Eun bin, Ahn Eun jin, Kim Bum, Kim Yong ji, Flower Boy’s Go Dok Mi and Search:WWW’s Bae Tami. Cancelled Ji Chang wook (bye). Desperately missed Kim Jae Wook. Had thoughts on Hwang In Yeop, which were mostly heart eyes. Discovered J dramas and fell in love with Cherry Magic’s Adachi.

My year-in-review below:

LOVED

Into The Ring - I am so glad I saved this for a rainy day because it’s exactly the kind of upright citizen shenanigans my unemployed ass needed at the end of the year.

Goo Se Ra thinks the govt should work for the people but that doesn’t mean her own moral compass always points north. Her purpose is to make steady money, and I love seeing her go hard to survive and cobble together what she needs. The thing that really works for me is that she wants to be good, but she isn’t always. And you get to see her be disappointed, upset, embarrassed and hurt from being publicly kicked in the gut as she navigates a job where she appears, on the surface, to be a supremely confident, self-serving, accidental politician. What you see as her naiveté is mostly just her being a regular person in an environment dictated by backhand deals and rich people politics. She gets hit again and again, and you see what it does to her sense of worth to get back up again, how she grapples with her self. And through all this the show is funny?! Se Ra is what writers of manic pixie characters think they are doing and not doing at all. Love her friends, and Jang Hye-jin is *chef’s kiss*!

Hyena - Kim Hye Soo’s Jung Geum Ja is perhaps Se Ra’s older and darker contemporary.  Geum Ja is a survivor and will get what she wants and where she wants to, however many hells she has to cross. She’s single-minded about her success, ruthless and has no qualms about bending morals to get the outcome she needs. She’ll never compromise on who she is or justify how she lives, can build people up and also tear them down, but she also knows care and kindness.

I turned to Signal for more Kim Hye Soo but was disappointed in how the first few episodes seemed to shortchange her. May try again in 2021.

(Highly recommend @saltr0se​’s  fic series which just GETS Geum Ja so well. Fic writers are the best)

Search: WWW (Finished in 2020) - It took me half a year to finish this. I started watching Search in Oct 2019 and raced through the first 6 episodes because I couldn’t take my eyes off the rollercoaster of Bae Tami’s life. And then I had to take a break because it was a little too close to the frenetic pace of my own industry. As @drivingsideways wrote, a lot of Search is premised around ‘patriarchy? who dat?’, which is why watching its politics play out is so fascinating.  It’s also deliciously turmoil-y to watch a very clear-sighted, weathered Tami put on rose-tinted glasses for her romance and then frequently peer over them to evaluate whether it could actually meld into her life.

Catch The Ghost - Kim Seonho oozes charm and perhaps Startup was a showcase of how effectively he can be a typical male lead. But Catch is exactly not that. Go Jiseok and Yoo Ryeong have moulded their lives around to meet their most desperate wishes in life and in the process also left parts of themselves untended. There is guilt, pain and need. Now guess who will tend to whose wounds? Their dynamic is electric even when the central mystery flags towards the last few episodes of the show. I really hope Moon Geun Young is doing well and gets more amazing roles soon. She is so good here.

(Highly recommend @melonatures​‘s fic for putting that sizzling on-screen chemistry into words. HOW?!) Cherry Magic - Stories about painfully awkward people are my jam and Eiji Akaso gets Adachi’s shy, nervy energy so right. Cherry Magic is straight up just 12 hours of 🥺🥺🥺. 

Stranger/Secret Forest - I’ve been devouring the entirety of Agatha Christie’s work this year after Stranger reminded me how comforting murder mysteries can be. I love Bae Doona. I also love characters who don’t get social norms, not always because they are out to flout them but because that’s just not how their mind/brain works. (have to watch S2)

Flower Boy Next Door -  Honestly, the opening scene introducing Park Shin Hye’s character Go Deok Mi sold me on this immediately. An introverted, penny pinching copy editor living alone and working from home thanks to extreme social anxiety? Love. All the side characters are a lot of fun and I’ve never loved Kim Seulgi and Go Kyung Pyo more. It’s a warm show, slowly rounding off the sharp edges of every character.

JUST FUN

The Spies Who Loved Me -  It’s been a year of disappointing rom-coms and Spies kind of quietly turned it around for me. I want to be the fly on Yoo In Na’s wall as she figures how to play her characters. I’ve only seen her in 3 roles but somehow she always manages to be in character arcs that don’t short change her. Spies could’ve been and sometimes is the regular heterosexual fare, but In Na ups the ante over and over again, coming out on top as the smartest person in the room.

ENJOYED WITH *RESERVATIONS*

I have to watch A Piece Of Your Mind again because I don’t understand how Jung Hae In and Chae Soo bin built SO MUCH warmth and crackling chemistry with barely a kiss. I was iffy about how the whole AI thing started off and the tortured musician plotline (angsty male artists will forever be an eyeroll for me).

Park Min Young is a queen who never disappoints and When The Weather Is Nice is everything you want in a winter romance. My reservation was in how they explore so much of domestic abuse and the complex ways its traumatised the women in this family. I’m ok with the characters having imperfect ways of processing and understanding the violence, I welcome it. I’m not ok with the show dancing around whether the pivotal crime was justified/ self defence (it was).

A lot of dramas did this. I loved Han Yeri and Choo Ja Hyun in My Unfamiliar Family, I didn’t like the free pass the show gave their dad’s abusive character. 

Hwang Jung Eum’s comedy style is generally not my thing but she was pretty great in Mystic Pop-UP Bar. But I’m side-eyeing the sanctity surrounding motherhood. Maybe I should read more about babies and Korean folklore.

Hospital Playlist was my comfort watch through June and July. I think its wholesomeness and non-plot writing came at a good time for me. But I noticed then that the throughline for all main characters was moral superiority and hence what I then saw as *wholesomeness*. It’s kind of what makes it a grating rewatch in parts. Plus the real life of misogyny of Yoo Yeon Seok makes me want to push his angelic catholic character off a cliff. (For context, i was raised catholic). I want to continue loving Chae Song Hwa, and for that the showrunners need to stop cornering her with overbearing romantic interests (let that woman breathe! she literally ran away to another city!) 

Hospital is good at creating moments of comfort, so much so that I went to watch Reply 1988 after it, but had to drop it coz I couldn’t get into it. Maybe I’ll come back to it next year.

Once Again is what I call joint family propaganda. What it does well is lay bare the mechanics of living in a society that prizes the heterosexual family structure, the loops you have to jump through to hide when you break its rules and what happens when you are found out. I love the characters, their fights, their frustrations. I just don’t love the validation of joint families. (context: i grew up in an oppressive joint family lol). In my au, Nahee and Gyujin don’t get married again or immediately have children, but take the long route to figuring out how to love the person the other is. Gahee is openly dating Hyo shin and her parents have to figure out how to process her success and her romance. Young dal and Ok boon have to learn to stop dictating their children’s lives.  Joon sun runs his company from home, so his wife Hyun kyung can work on what she wants. Choyeon, Joori and Ga-yeon go back to being flamboyant AF and the market learns to not judge. Gyujin and Jaesok have to actually work on the relationship with their mother and what sent her into depression. Just a lot of learning involved.

Just Between Lovers was a nice watch, i just don’t get how Kang doo and Ha Moon So’s relationship will survive his constantly simmering anger. 

Crash Landing on You was so much fun until the main romance turned angsty, but it gave us North Korean soldier shenanigans and the epic romance of Seo Dan and Alberto Gu that we needed more of.

Tale of The Nine Tailed is probably what Goblin wished it was. I, however, will never be over Lee Rang. (Also, when can gods stop meeting their love interests as babies? Asking for my sanity)

I literally ignored everything in Oh My Ghost except Park Bo Young and Kim Seulgi and it was amazing. 

NOPE

Goblin, Dinner Mate, Oh My Baby and My Secret Romance were a whole lot of NO, NAHI, ILLAAA. 

I loved hate-watching The King:Eternal Monarch with the rest of k drama tumblr but someone please take away Kim Eun-sook’s access to gigantic budgets and all-star casts.

It was painful to watch Do You Like Brahms squander away its potential but I’m glad to be introduced to Park Eun bin. Age of Youth is next on watchlist.

More than Friends to me is only Ahn Eun jin. Someone give her amazing lead roles asap.

Why did Record of Youth do that to Park So Dam and her clothes? Just why
