Gator gets his arm broken and Win gets protective.

The weeks following Win’s visit to the ranch slipped by and life almost fell into a semblance of normalcy.  Despite the days growing shorter and the nights growing colder, not much of any real consequence happened to distinguish one day from another, and Gator began spending nearly every night at Win’s, even if all he did was crawl into bed next to her after a long shift to fall asleep in her arms.
The more time that passed, the less Win thought about Roy’s threat, but it was always there in the back of her mind, a lurking unease, as if she were just waiting for the other shoe to drop.  Gator, on the other hand, was blissfully oblivious and Win envied him that.
The end of October was drawing closer, Halloween practically around the corner and Win’s house was already decked out for the occasion–she and Gator joining forces to decorate.  It turned out the holiday was Gator’s favourite too.
Win was just adding some more fake spiderwebs to the drop down lights hanging over the kitchen island when her phone rang, Gator’s personal ringtone playing through the speakers.
Letting it ring for a second as she put up the finishing touches, it abruptly stopped and started again, Gator having called back almost instantly.
“Okay okay, I’m coming,” she huffed, climbing down from the counter to reach for her phone, bringing it to her ear.
“Y’ello?” she answered, half paying attention as she opened the fridge to reach for a pop.
“Win?” Gator’s voice sounded through the phone line, but there was an edge to it.
“Yeah, what’s up, babe?” she replied, bumping the fridge door shut with her hip, opening the can one handed.
“I don’t wantcha to freak out or anything, but… I’m in the hospital—“
“What?” Win yelped, nearly choking on her drink, panic flooding her for a moment, Roy’s words flashing through her head.
End things or there will be consequences.
“Win.  Win!  It’s okay, I’m okay!” Gator assured her hastily, his voice pulling her back to the moment, though her heart still felt lodged in her throat.
“I broke my wrist, that’s all,” he elaborated and Win let out a heavy breath.
“How?  What happened?” she demanded, but a commotion on the other end of the line seemed to pull Gator’s attention and he answered a question she couldn’t quite hear.
“I gotta go, they’re gunna put the cast on now, but I’ll be over as soon as I can.”
“Wait, Gator—“
“I promise, I’ll be over as soon as I’m done.  Don’t worry babe,” he assured her before the line clicked and Win frowned, fighting the urge to throw her phone across the cramped kitchen.
“Fuck that,” she hissed under her breath, grabbing her keys and rounding the counter to the door, not content to sit around and wait for him show up while her anxious mind ran laps.
Tumblr media
“Hi, I’m here to see Gator Tillman,” Win exclaimed, approaching the front desk, drumming her fingers against the counter anxiously, looking around for anyone she might recognize in the waiting room, though she didn’t know whether he’d been hurt at work or at the ranch.
The woman behind the desk glanced up from her computer monitor and frowned.  “You a family member, hon?”
“Oh, uh no,” Win faltered, chewing the inside of her lip.  “But–”
“Then I’m sorry, but you’ll hafta wait.  Only family can go back right now,” she explained, her eyes flicking back to her screen.  “Although, it looks like he’ll be out soon, they’re almost finished setting his cast.”
Win nodded, pushing away from the counter to hover by the double doors to the emergency room entrance to wait for Gator, fighting not to pace while chewing her thumbnail.
When the doors opened with a clang, Win gave a jump and turned to see who had emerged, expecting her boyfriend, only to come face to face with his father, her expression souring further.
“What’re you doin’ here?” Roy grunted, fixing his coat collar before turning his full attention on her.  “Thought the boy told you to wait at your place.  You got a problem doin’ what you’re told?”
Win huffed incredulously, crossing her arms over her chest.  “I don’t do well with orders, or have you forgotten that?”
Roy let out an unamused snort, looking her up and down.  “Nope, you’ve made that more than clear,” he muttered, moving to step past her.
“Wait!” Win exclaimed, stepping in front of him to block his path.  “What happened?  How’d he break his arm?” she demanded and Roy rolled his eyes.
“Well, what can I say?  The boy’s a little… inept sometimes when it comes to his job.  Not my fault he got cocky and let his guard down at the wrong time.  Maybe the pain’ll help him learn his lesson,” Roy muttered, shaking his head, his eyes meeting Win’s.
“He should count himself lucky it was only a broken wrist.  After all, I’m sure neither of us would hate to see anything worse happen to him.”
Win held Roy’s gaze despite the chill that ran through her at his words.  Maybe it was just her imagination, but it felt like there was a threat hidden within them.  Surely the man wouldn’t hurt his own son just to get to her…  He wasn’t that twisted, was he?
“Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got work to do.”  Roy stepped around her, leaving her to ponder his words, her stomach churning.
Nearly as soon as he left, however, the emergency room doors swung open again to admit Gator, the sight of him sweeping Win’s worries aside for the moment, and she practically knocked the wind from him as she rushed to his arms.
“Win?” he exclaimed, wrapping her into a hug despite his surprise, his cast pressing awkwardly to her back.  “I told you I’d meet you–”
“I know,” she huffed, pressing her face against his chest before pulling back to look up at him.  “I couldn’t wait, I had to see that you were okay,” she insisted, her face warming at the smug grin that spread across Gator’s visage.
“You were that worried about me?” he teased, earning himself a poke in the side.  “Ow!  Hey, I’m injured, remember?” he whined, holding his arm up as a reminder, though he still wore a small smirk.
“Keep teasin’ me and you’ll end up worse,” Win warned, though her words held no heat.  “C’mon, I’m takin’ you home,” she said decidedly, hooking her arm around his and leading him to the parking lot.
“Yes ma’am,” he murmured, knowing better than to argue.  “You gunna take care of me?” he wondered hopefully, looking forward to a little pampering.
“That depends,” Win replied, opening the passenger door for him before rounding the Chevelle and slipping behind the wheel.
“On what?” Gator yelped, awkwardly trying to buckle his seatbelt until Win turned to help him.
“On whether or not you tell me how this happened,” she replied, glancing pointedly at the cast on his arm before fixing him with a level stare that he shied back from, chewing the inside of his cheek, as if deliberating on what to say, torn between his father’s need for secrecy and his desire for Win’s attention.
“This guy got the jump on me is all,” he muttered, reaching for his vape pen to take a long draw, puffing on it indignantly.  “It coulda been worse, but it wasn’t, okay?  The asshole killed a couple of our guys before he got away,” he huffed and Win wasn’t sure if he was angry with her for asking, or at himself for messing up.
“So he’s still out there?” she asked and Gator winced.
“Yeah, but the shitbird’s in the wind.  I doubt we’ll be seein’ any more of him,” he exclaimed quickly.
“Why not?”
“Cause he knows I’ll be waitin’ for him if he ever shows his cowardly face again,” Gator scoffed.
Win looked doubtful, but didn’t say anything as she drove back to her place.
“C’mon, let’s get you comfortable,” she said, leading him inside and crouching at his feet to untie his boots.
As soon as she dropped to her knees, Gator’s brows raised and he had to clear his throat, awkwardly adjusting his cargo pants as the fabric at his crotch started to tighten.
“Don’t tell me you’re getting turned on like this,” Win teased, tilting her head back to look up at him, a knowing look on her face.
“What, you look nice on your knees,” Gator scoffed, warmth suffusing him.
“Mhmm,” Win hummed amusedly before straightening and helping him balance as he toed his loosened boots off.  “You go sit down, I’ll get you a drink,” she said, pointing to the couch before heading to the fridge to grab him a cold Mtn Dew.
Gator obeyed, shrugging his Sheriff’s vest off and plopping down on the couch, kicking his feet up on the foot stool, groaning softly as a dull pain flared through him where Munch had kneed him.
“What’s wrong?” Win asked, noticing his discomfort as she set the glass of pop next to him on the end table.
“Fucker kneed me in the groin,” Gator mumbled, rubbing at the area with a wince.
“I’ll get some ice,” Win offered, not waiting for him to argue before heading back to the freezer for a bag of frozen peas.  “Hope your junk still works,” she teased gently, dropping the peas on his crotch as she sat down next to him.  “That’d be a real shame otherwise.”
“Don’t worry, Princess, it still works just fine,” Gator huffed, moving the peas up and over to the left side of his pelvis.  “He didn’t hit my junk, just… nearby,” he muttered.
“Well, that’s a relief,” Win replied, her teasing grin melting to something softer as she watched his profile.  “Do you need any pain meds?” she asked, glancing down at his blue gauze wrapped cast.
“Nah, I had some at the hospital.  I can take some more later,” Gator answered, taking a sip from his glass and letting out a sigh.
Win nodded, fidgeting with the corded bracelet around her wrist for a moment before loosening the knot and slipping it off.  “Here,” she murmured, reaching for his uninjured left arm and Gator frowned in confusion as she slipped the bracelet around his wrist and pulled the cords snug, nestling it next to his watch.
“The fuck’s that?” he asked, looking down at the little blue glass eye that stared back at him.
“It’s my evil eye bracelet.  I want you to wear it,” Win mumbled, ducking her head and tucking her hair behind her ear.  “It’ll protect you.”
Gator frowned, his brow furrowing.  “Isn’t it kinda gay?  The guys’ll never let me hear the end of it if they see me wearin’ this thing,” he scoffed, though he didn’t make a move to try to take it off and Win stiffened, her own brows pinching.
“Fine, I’ll take it back!” she huffed, trying to hide her hurt behind indignation as she reached across him for his arm.  “See if I fuckin’ care!”
Noticing the hurt look that crossed her face, Gator’s stomach twisted and he pulled his arm back, keeping it just out of her reach.
“Wait, okay!  I changed my mind, if it means that much to you, I’ll wear it, okay?  M’sorry,” he exclaimed, waiting for her to stop reaching for it before he dropped his arm, giving the bracelet another once over.
“So what exactly is it?  You called it… an evil eye?  That sounds like a bad thing,” he said.
Win let out a heavy breath and sank back into the couch cushion.
“It’s supposed to ward off bad luck and keep you safe,” she explained.  “I know it’s superstitious and shit, but… I dunno, if there’s any chance it’ll help, I’ll take it,” she muttered, avoiding his gaze as she picked at her chipped nail polish, and Gator softened.
“What’s gotten into you, huh?  I’ve never seen you this worried before,” he pointed out.
Win chewed her lip, trying to decide if she should tell him about Roy’s threat or not.
“Yeah well, you haven’t been hurt like this on the job before,” she exclaimed instead.  “As much as I hate to admit it… I care about you, and your job is fuckin’ dangerous.  I mean, you got assaulted today, your arm is in a cast for Chrissakes!  And you said several other guys ended up dead!  I don’t want that to happen to you!” she cried, the words flying out of her in a rush.
Gator grinned, turning her face toward him.  “Aww baby, you don’t gotta worry.  I’m a badass.  Fucker got the drop on me, is all.  If it woulda been a fair fight, I’d have wiped the floor with him,” he assured her, running his thumb across her bottom lip.
“But it’s pretty cute you’re worried an’ all,” he drawled, making Win roll her eyes.
“Gator,” she groaned, trying to pull away, torn between being angry at him for making light of the situation and annoyed at his teasing, but he didn’t let her get away, leaning over her to steal a kiss, only to wince in pain when he put his weight on his bad arm, already having forgotten about it.
“Careful,” Win murmured, pushing him back gently, and he let out a petulant huff.
“M’ fine,” he grunted.  “I told you, I’m tough.  Besides,” he added, stroking her cheek with a calloused thumb, “you’re my girl, and that means it’s my job to protect ya.  I gotta be tough to protect what’s mine,” he boasted.
“What’s yours?” Win repeated, knowing she should probably be offended by the statement, but couldn’t quite bring herself to be.
“Yeah, you’re all mine,” Gator drawled, holding her gaze possessively.
“I… kinda like the sound of that,” Win admitted reluctantly, surprised at the way her heart fluttered at his words before frowning.  “But by that logic, that means it’s just as much my job to protect you,” she countered firmly, just daring for him to disagree.
Gator looked doubtful, and for a moment she thought he was about to argue when he suddenly sighed, the air rushing from his lips loudly.  Even if he didn’t completely agree, he knew better than to voice that opinion.  It went against everything his father had taught him about being a man, but then again, Win wasn’t like any woman he’d ever met–she was capable and fierce–and to be honest, the thought that someone cared enough about him to want to protect him made his chest feel tight in a way he wasn’t used to.
“Alright, I guess I can live with that,” he mumbled, hoping she wouldn’t notice the way his face warmed.
“Good,” Win countered, patting his cheek and wrinkling her nose.  “Just promise me you’ll be careful, okay?”
Gator snorted, dropping his hand from her jaw.  “I promise I’ll be careful and I won’t take off this stupid bracelet if it’ll make you feel better,” he said, flashing her a wry smile.
Win rolled her eyes, but smiled in relief, leaning forward to kiss his forehead.  “Thank you for humouring me,” she murmured and Gator sighed, letting his eyes slide shut at the feel of her lips.
“Yeah, yeah, you’re lucky you’re so cute,” he muttered, earning a smug grin from Win as she pulled back.
“Can I draw on your cast?” she asked, eyeing the expanse of blank canvas and Gator snorted.
“You’re not gunna draw anything stupid, are ya?”
“Course not.  Please?  You’ll love it,” she insisted, tilting her head and pleading with her best puppy dog eyes til Gator softened, feigning exasperation.
“Yeah alright,” he relented, grinning to himself as Win jumped to her feet to fetch a sharpie from the desk.
“I’ll make it look pretty,” she teased, pulling his arm into her lap as she jumped back onto the couch, bending over his cast in concentration.
“If the guys give me shit about this–” Gator began only to be silenced with a sharp look.
“Don’t you trust me?”
Gator knew the question was a trap and he let out a huff, deciding better than to walk into that one, bringing his glass to his lips and taking several long gulps of the neon yellow soda.
Win wore a smug grin as she began to doodle, drawing a sheriff’s badge and rifle beneath a little alligator, adding a cheeky “property of Win xoxo” as her signature while Gator craned his head to watch.
“Really?” he asked, raising an unamused brow at her.
“What?” she replied coyly, glancing up at him, a mischievous light to her stormy eyes.  “Thought you belonged to me now.  Don’t you want everyone to know it?” she teased and Gator grunted, biting back a reluctant grin.
“So, there’s this Halloween party my friends and I are gunna be performing at this weekend, just some cover songs and shit, nothing major, but I was hopin’ you’d wanna come,” Win ventured, her gaze flicking to his for a moment before returning to her doodles.  “Thought you could meet my friends and watch me play,” she murmured with a shrug, half worried he’d tell her he didn’t wanna go.  “I mean, if you’re off duty that night…”
Gator watched her, affection washing over him, taking him aback.
She wanted him there.
“Yeah.  Hell yeah I wanna go,” he insisted.
“Really?” Win asked, sitting up straighter and searching his face, finding only honesty in his expression.
“Great!  It’s a costume party too, so I was thinking we could do a couple’s costume,” she added.
“Yeah?  What’chu have in mind?” Gator asked, Win’s excitement rubbing off on him.
“I was thinking of going as Sally from the Nightmare Before Christmas, so maybe you could be my Jack?”
Gator grinned.  “That’s perfect!  I’ll stop at that Halloween store at the old K-mart tomorrow and see if they have any Jack Skellington masks.”
“Awesome,” Win replied, finishing up her masterpiece on his cast and tossing the pen aside.  “Is this your jerk off arm?” she asked after a moment, her lips curling in amusement.  “Might make things difficult for you,” she teased.
A snort ripped through Gator’s nose and he pulled her into his lap, this time minding his injured wrist.  “Why would I need to jerk off when I have you?” he scoffed, his brows raising as if he were just waiting for her to argue, a hungry light flashing in his eyes.
“Oh, I see how it is,” Win laughed, slipping her arms over his shoulders.
“Yeah, your hands are much nicer than mine,” he drawled, tilting his chin up to capture her lips in a slow delving kiss.  “And don’t even get me started on that mouth of yours, or your sweet sweet pussy,” he breathed, his eyes flicking up to hers as he shared her breath, his lips barely brushing hers.
Win swallowed, admiring the needy look on his face, his large brown eyes blown wide with want.
“Hmm, I guess you have a point,” she hummed, tilting her head to kiss his jaw, her lips dragging down his neck while her teeth grazed his flushed skin and her hands dropped to his belt, deftly unbuckling the black leather strap.  “Since you’ve been such a brave boy, I suppose you deserve a little treat,” she purred, playfully licking into his mouth before slipping from his lap to settle on the floor between his knees.
“You’re damn straight,” he groaned, leaning back against the cushions and letting his head loll back, though his eyes stayed trained on Win as she undid his cargo pants to free his throbbing length.
As soon as she wrapped her hand around him, Gator’s breath hitched and Win smiled at his reaction, stroking him slowly–enjoying the way his long lashes fluttered with each pump of her hand.  Sitting up on her knees, she held his gaze as long as she could before pressing her plush lips to his pretty pink tip, her tongue peeking out to lap along his slit, catching the clear bead of pre-cum that had wept out.
Humming softly, she swirled her tongue around the ridge of his head before returning to his slit, teasing it with the tip of her tongue, and Gator groaned louder.
“Such a fuckin’ tease,” he growled, though his voice held a hint of a whine and Win huffed a laugh through her nose.
Instead of responding, she glanced up at him pointedly before tilting her head and licking a broad stripe up the thick vein on the underside of his length.
Gator swallowed, watching her intently, his mouth falling open when she finally wrapped her lips around him, taking him into her mouth.
“Oh fuck,” he gasped, his voice coming out breathy and hoarse, and Win hummed again in response, the vibrations sending a shudder through him, the spring in his gut constricting tighter.  “Shit, feels so good, Winnie,” he groaned, stroking her hair before threading it through his fingers and resting his palm against the back of her neck, urging her deeper.
Win moaned, Gator’s praise and the thick weight of his cock against her tongue sent arousal pooling between her legs.  Taking a deep breath through her nose, Win cracked her jaw wider, letting Gator push her head down farther.  Swallowing nearly all of him, her nose buried in the coarse dark hair at his base she fought not to choke, tears springing to her eyes and gathering in her lashes.
Wrapping her hand around his base, she began to pump her fist over the length she couldn’t fit in her mouth in time with each bob of her head, saliva running down her chin to pool messily at his base and drip down his balls, but she didn’t care, focusing only on trying to breathe and not choke each time he rut his hips eagerly, bucking deeper down her throat.
“Oh fuck.  F-fuck, Winnie–little cockslut, oh–!”
Gator’s praise soon turned to a babbled string of sharp curses interspersed with his sinful moans of her name.
“Shit baby, I’m gunna–” he whimpered, his fist tightening in her hair and Win squeezed his thigh, letting him know she was ready, moaning around him for extra stimulation.
With the loud keening cry, Gator tensed, his cock spasming in her mouth as he came, spilling his load down her throat, but Win didn’t stop, hollowing her cheeks to suck him clean, leaving him squirming and whimpering from overstimulation before she finally pulled his softening cock from her mouth.
Her eyes found his, as she opened her mouth to show him his mess before swallowing it down and wiping the drool from her chin.
“Oh fuck, I lo–love how good you are at that,” Gator groaned, going limp in his seat, his face flushed and his breaths heavy, hoping Win hadn’t caught his near slip up.
Win’s lips curved into a proud smirk and she pushed herself up, stealing a kiss as Gator tucked himself back into his boxers.
“I know,” she purred, plopping back down on the couch and reaching for the remote.  “C’mere,” she said, patting her thighs as she got comfortable, propping her legs out on the foot stool in front of her and Gator obeyed, stretching out along the length of the couch and resting his head in her lap with a contented sigh.
“That better?” she asked, scratching her nails lightly through his hair as she settled on a movie.
“You have no idea,” Gator murmured, his eyelids already slipping shut at the calming way her fingers moved through his hair, working it loose of it’s stiff gel.
Win huffed a soft laugh.
“Yeah well, don’t get too used to it,” she teased, too busy watching the soft slope of his freckled cheek to pay much attention to the movie she’d picked, finally feeling at ease, knowing at least for the moment, he was safe in her arms.
Gator snorted, cracking an eyelid to peer up at her.  “Dunno, seems like you don’t mind it that much,” he pointed out smugly and Win flicked his ear with her finger in return, laughing at his indignant yelp.
After a moment, however, he sobered, carefully keeping his gaze straight ahead.
“Thanks for taking care of me,” he murmured and Win softened, her breath hitching in her throat.
“I’ll always be here to take care of you,” she whispered, stroking his cheek. “Just don't make it a habit of getting banged up like this.  I don’t think my heart could take it.”
Gator closed his eyes against the wave of emotion that threatened to choke him.
“I’ll do my best.”

Sister | L. Hughes
luke hughes x !sister reader
based on the music video brother by kodaline🫶🏻(listen to the song while reading! or don’t it’s whatever you guys decide :) )
warnings:mentions of child death and a funeral
luke and y/n are 10, Jack is 12 and Quinn is 14
I hope this actually lives up to my expectations and I hope y’all like it
crying during this whole thing omg
“luke cmon we have to go!” jack yelled up the stairs. I sighed and bonded the stairs immediately going outside, getting in the car and buckling up. Mom turned to me “hey sweetie you okay?” “I’m fine” I said looking out the window. Jack got in a few minutes after that short talk and dad started driving. quinn nudged me and I looked over at him he wrapped his arm around me pulling me straight into his side. “it’s gonna be okay i promise” he said I just nodded looking back out the window.
I felt the car stop about 20 minutes after we departed everyone got out but I couldn’t muster up the courage to get out. I heard the car door open and someone take my hand and unbuckling the seat belt, taking it off and taking me out, I looked up seeing quinn , he gave me a soft smile and started walking us over to the ceremony. I stood in between jack and quinn never letting go of his hand, I soon felt jack slip his hand into mine and I smiled a bit being grateful my brothers were here, just wish she was here even more. The ceremony started a few minutes after everyone got situated and I tried so hard to pay attention but I couldn’t bare so I spaced out getting lost in my thoughts. I suddenly felt my hand being pulled and I came back out of my thoughts realizing it was over and that we were heading back to the house for a small lunch with the other family members. I got in the car buckling up and looking out the window as the others got in and dad started driving. Before I knew it we were at the house and everybody went inside but me, I needed a few minutes to myself and I think everybody understood that. I went inside once I collected myself well enough, once I walked into the room I felt eyes on me but I ignored it walking over to the picture on the counter table, it was the recent picture mom took of her, the very last one we got. I felt grandma rub my arm and I gave her a soft smile before sitting on the couch I spaced off for a few before I reached over grabbing an apple and a marker and started drawing a smiley face on it, I turned it around once I was done to show quinn and jack while smiling, they smiled before turning to talk about something.
it’s been hours since everyone left and I was currently in bed fast asleep when I heard the creak of the floor boards, I opened my eyes expecting to see quinn but instead saw someone under a sheet, they looked into my room for a few seconds before walking away. I got up following them out to the living room before I grabbed it pulling it down revealing y/n, I quickly pulled her into a hug as she wrapped her arms securely around me. “Hey little brother” she said in a hushed whisper. I groaned causing her to laugh and pull away but I pulled her right back in immediately. She sighed happily hugging back, “I’ve missed you.” “Yeah I know but hey I’m alright and it’s so fun where I’m at okay? Nothing to worry about but how about we make a fort and tell funny stories!” she said smiling and pulling away to grab the blankets, I went over there to help her as we got to building. Once it was finished she told me not to get in before going upstairs and coming back downstairs with the hockey sticks that we used alot “one last game?” she asked smiling “ yes please but you don’t think mom would care if we go out on the ice alone?” “No I don’t think she will plus she won’t find out, go get your stuff on and I’ll be down here waiting.” I quickly went upstairs but staying quiet and changed into warmer clothes and grabbed my skates going back down to her and we went outside and got on the ice skating around for a few before y/n threw a puck down i smiled and immediately went for it skating towards the goal but she blocked me stealing it back and going over to the other goal scoring, I smiled watching her do her little celly which consisted of her doing a trick with her stick. “I’ll never get use to seeing you do that” I said. “Oh I know but it still is so cool” she said coming back over to me. “round 2?” I asked “round 2.” She said before taking the puck as I chased after her.
we spent an hour out there before we headed back inside putting everything away and laying in the fort “Remember the time jack was skating and ended up doing a front flip and landing it completely then he fell and hurt his bottom” I said laughing, she laughed too. “Yeah I do, he complained to mom about us laughing but he secretly loved making us laugh that day”
“he really did, gonna miss that a lot.” I said. “Don’t miss it, he’s still gonna do it just give him time moosey, you guys are hurting all together and you should go to them cause they understand.” she said turning to face me as she laid down on the pillows we shoved in there, I laid down turning to face her too. “I don’t think they do.” I said feeling guilty about saying it. “I know they didn’t lose a twin but they lost a sister luke , it’s equally the same thing just be there for them for me.” She said giving me a small smile. “I will thanks for being here y/n/n” I said yawning and closing my eyes feeling tired out from playing. “Anytime moosey goodnight and I love you.” heard that right as I knocked out.
I woke up and quickly looked around for y/n before realizing I was in still in the fort I tore it down looking underneath the blankets once I felt something, I picked it up examining it as it was the last picture of her. I heard footsteps coming down as quinn and jack both came running in, they saw me looking at the photo while crying and immediately came over picking me up and pulling me into the tightest hug ever, I hugged back but I noticed an apple next to the one I drew on earlier with a smiley face and I smiled knowing it wasn’t a dream and continued hugging my brothers. “we got you brother, it’s okay” quinn said said tightening the hug even if it wasn’t possible.
but what the boys didn’t know is that she was right there joining in on the hug.
god this broke me but I hope you enjoy it and it’s good so!

What's any big or small celesgiri hc you have?
HHIHI soooo I’m gonna use this ask as an excuse to just ramble about my girlies thank ya thank ya
Okay so not really a celesgiri specific hc (kinda) but like a feel like people seem the forget that Celestia is in fact a loser in a really shitty disguise. Her whole thing is that she’s go a very self absorbed goth girl image to hide the fact that she’s just some nerd, she’s actually quite pathetic. In my head the reason Celestia doesn’t like being around other people isn’t because she’s super cool and nonchalant, but because she is just so scared. She’s the type of person to try and skip school during presentation weeks because talking to people makes her incredibly nervous. Celestia is definitely the type of girl to see other really cool girls in the hallway or the bathroom and be like ‘oh my god they look so nice god I hope they don’t even know I exist.’ She would probably see Kyoko and her friends and it’s like infatuation at first sight. She’s obsessed with her but I think the first time Kyoko would acknowledge her existence she’d SWEAT but ya know since she has an image she’s gotta keep up she hides it. Anywayssss her and Kyoko have this relationship for a while where Celestia is so gay for her and Kyoko cannot read people for the life of her so she’s like ‘oh it’s Celestia Ludenberg she’s so professional’ meanwhile Celestia is like heart eyes whenever she sees her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’ve been drawing Kyoko taller than the other girls since I can even remember she has incredible tall girl vibes IN THE SAME WAY that Celestia is definitely just barely 5’3 it’s just the vibes. Celestia has short woman anger that’s the only way I can describe it. Celestia has definitely fought some guy over a gamble in a dark ally in a way that only short girls can. She’s closer to hell which is why Kyoko is just a little bit more peaceful. Kyoko is definitely a ‘talk it out’ kinda person and Celestia is 100% the ‘what’d you just say to her?? No no say it again’ girl but like a little more eloquent and threatening

THIS IS AN UNTAPPED CELESGIRI MARKET YALL okay Celestia is a criminal, she’s a gambler, she’s a tiny goth girl and she’s definitely not welcome in Arizona, Utah, and certain parts of Europe, and she is MADLY IN LOVE with the greatest detective in Japan THIS IS COMEDY GOLD. Even after they get together and Celestia does the ‘I promise I won’t cause any trouble hehehe’ thing, it’s still ‘till death to us part’ it doesn’t say anything about the cops. So every once and a while Kyoko will be on break, get a rushed phone call’, a coworker will ask ‘New case??’ and she gets to be like ‘No my wife got arrested at a Whataburger, I’ll be right back’ and it’s a completely normal Tuesday. Celestia would also 100% be the family member that takes the kids to go pick up her prison friends once they get out. At this point everyone would probably think that Kyoko is getting really sick of this, but honestly it’s so normal to her. Like yeah Celestia is gonna get a bitchn as soon as she gets into the car but that might be it. It’s just the dynamic, Celestia has a tendency to mess with the law and Kyoko has the money to bail her out, and then they kiss mwah mwah.

Autumn 1913
That Sunday, You and Albert went about on one of your typical Sunday walks. As usual, Joey trotted next to you. The long grass was turning brown. The sky was so bright, yet the air was very crisp. The trees were growing orange with the harvest.
“And how was sitting in that rowboat with Lyons?” he asked, recalling the church picnic yesterday.
“Dreadful. I thought I’d fall asleep from how he droned on!” you recalled.
Joey shook his head and let out a neigh. You patted his nose. Then reached up a hand to run through his mane.
“He agrees with you on that one!”
After a beat, Albert asked.
Y/N, have you ever ridden him?”
“Oh no! Not even tried! I don’t know if I can!” you cried.
“Come on, try it!” Albert suggested, handing over the reins.
“But Albie, I could get hurt! I’m not the type to gallop!” you objected.
“Oh, he won’t! He only gallops if you urge him on! Or some loud sound spooks him! Come on- have some fun, Y/N!” Albert argued.
Albert did it all the time. He made it look so easy. And you were curious. You never rode horses. No one taught you how. Usually, the horses on your farm were for plowing instead of riding.
"Just once, Y/N! Save your feet!" Albert suggested.
You wanted to feel less afraid of things. You heard of people dying when they fell off horses. You wanted to feel in control. You envied Albert's freedom in private to run around after farmwork. And his bravery in training and riding a galloping horse. You wanted to know what it was like...and there was only one way how.
Not that you hated Joey- oh no! By now, Joey was a member of the family. He had grown bigger than the colt your family's future depended on to a gorgeous stallion. He even had a special saddle, bridle, and reigns for him. The dear horse would even sometimes trot up to you as you left the house for work. He'd nuzzle against you and sometimes let you brush his mane. One time you and Albert put your gloves on Joey’s ears for fun. Then you both roared into laughter at how his twitching ears moved the gloves like eager hands on his head. And wasn't that why many people kept horses as pets? To ride them?
“Alright...I’ll ride him. Just show me how,” you said.
“Wonderful! He can sense if you’re nervous, so just calm yourself! I won’t make him go fast!” he promised.
Albert was big and strong for a boy of sixteen now. He put his hands around your waist and hoisted you up on the saddle. Joey only let out a small sound at the feeling of your weight on him. But the horse kept still and even moved his head to glance at Albert. You swung your legs to be on one side like you noticed ladies doing. You held onto the reigns tightly.
"You see how he stood still when you got on him? That's proof he likes you!” Albert informed.
"Lead him, Albie. He doesn't really listen to anyone else," you advised.
"Come on, Joey! Let's give Y/N a ride back home!" he ordered, clicking his tongue as he gestured to the horse.
Joey began to move on the path back home, and you gasped some. You were on a breathing, living thing that could throw you off!
Balance your weight, Y/N...and be sure to keep your heels down,” Albert taught you.
You shifted to make sure your body was even and secure. Your leg stretched as you pointed your heels down.
"Good boy, Joey! Gentle…gentle…" You urged as he walked forward.
You felt Joey’s body relax under you and you relaxed on Joey. With the slow pace, you did release one hand to briefly pet him. It wasn't too far from home. You both had walked down the usual path- you and Albert had been perhaps- at most- ten miles down. And the meters were flying by. You heard the clop-clop of his hooves beneath the ground.
You got used to the pace. It was a pleasant day. The sun was shining, and one could hear the birds whistling at each other. The grass only dipped with the gentle wind. Autumnal colors painted the few trees that formed lines across the green fields.
Although it was a hilly area, Joey was used to it. Any larger rocks were stepped over or avoided. The slope on the path was slight. Though you did eye the side of the hill nervously. If you fell, you'd be rolling all the way down the hill like a wheel barrel until you landed among the sheep in the valley. You placed a hand on Joey's skin to note his temperature. If he was getting hot, he'd be slow and it was dangerous to ride a hot horse, according to Albert. But he didn't feel bad. Probably the cool air that kept him happy.
"We can go a little faster," you suggested.
"Alright!" Albert complied.
He then walked a little faster and clicked his tongue. Joey picked up speed to prance. You found yourself smiling. The Narracott House and farm appeared in the distance. Albert then looked up at you.
"You think you can ride him back?" he asked, pointing to the farm.
"Yes, I think I'd like to try!" you answered, feeling braver.
Albert then picked up his pace to a light jog and clicked his tongue.
“Okay Joey-little faster, boy!” he said.
Joey’s prance became a light run. You let out a squeal at the speed.
"Y/N! Don't scare him! And tug the reigns when you want him to slow down! Or click your tongue!" he instructed, though he was jogging next to you and getting breathless.
You smiled, feeling the sun on your skin and the clean, fresh air. You felt buzzed with movement, nature, exercise, and life. Joey passed Albert to head home. Why- in fact- it was fun! It felt like flying! You could feel how Joey’s black mane would tickle you. The air in your face was like a kiss. Albert was laughing as he kept up behind you. You were not worried about anything for once. You could enjoy the feeling of air and of your weight not touching the ground but moving. Beneath you, everything was smaller and flying faster, quicker by you. You couldn't help but giggle at it despite yourself. And sooner, sooner the farm was in view.
"Let’s keep walking home, alright boy? Keep this up, and I'll give you a whole apple from the tree! All for you!" you promised.
Once you approached the farmland, you tightened the reigns. And then clicked your tongue too for good measure.
"Slower, Joey, slower!" you urged.
Joey did slow his gait down to a mere trot. You pulled the reigns to lead him to walk through the yard to the horse area in front of the stable.
"Good boy, Joey. You're the best boy out there!" you said.
Tugging on the reigns (as you saw Albert do) Joey stopped. You then petted him.
"You're far better than half the boys in Devon! And far more handsome too!" you whispered with a giggle.
Joey brushed his lips in response. Harold the Goose let out a honk as you made your way back into the circular field in front of the stables.
"There, Joey! What a good boy! Who's the best boy?" you cooed. "You deserve an apple and a carrot too for good measure, don't you! Yes, you do!"
You hopped off. You began petting him. Albert caught up behind you. You looked into Joey's eyes, wrapping your arms around his head. Cuddling him as you would a cat. You heard Albert exclaim.
"Why- sir! Hello sir!"
"Albie, I’m not a sir-"
The rest of that phrase was cut off as you turned to see Captain Nicholls in his coat with his sketchbook. You jumped.
"Captain Nicholls! We weren't expecting you!" you cried.
"It's alright! At least your mother had plenty of leftovers for lunch!" he replied.
“What are you doing here?” you asked.
“I only hoped to draw the horse and the other creatures on the farm! What, may I ask, are you doing on Joey?” Nicholls teased.
“I…I only just rode him for the first time!” you explained.
Albert strolled up with a grin.
“Did you see that sir?” he asked Nicholls.
“Indeed, I did! I saw her gallop in from inside the house as I was done eating!” he replied.
“And how did she do?” Albert asked.
The captain turned to you.
“You did excellent Miss Narracott! You’re a natural!” he praised.
“I’ll keep that in mind, sir. You think I have a horsewoman in me?” you asked.
“If not already!” he quipped.
The picture of him and that girl at the Goose Fair snuck into your brain. You excused yourself and walked inside the house. Mum was already in the kitchen, watching the oven.
“Mum, tell me- where’s the feed? I want to make sure the animals have their lunch! Or the floors- they need a scrubbing,” you chatted. It was better to immediately distract yourself.
“There’s some dry laundry that needs folding!” she noted.
You ran out and got the dry laundry basket, bringing it to the table to fold.
She got a pan out of the oven. She set the hot, baked loaf on the windowsill, opening it up to cool. Mum then glanced out the window. James Nicholls could be seen out on the field with Joey already got his pencils and chair out and was starting to draw. Albert opened the door to the fence and then returned to talk with the guest.
“He sure does come around here, often, Captain Nicholls…” Mum commented.
“Yes…he does…” you agreed.
She turned around and sat down. Getting a fresh shirt from the basket and putting it on the table. But she paused. She glanced at you with a smile.
“Y/N, I will let you know…he has been perfectly nice to us and to your father. We…we do like him…” she prodded to you.
You set down the skirt you were working on.
“What are you implying?” you asked.
She glanced outside. Once it was clear that the men were far away, she leaned into you, placing a hand over yours.
“Y/N…if he’s showing up here often, I doubt it’s just for the animals…” she whispered with a smile.
You jerked back, shaking your head.
“It is for the animals. He’s seeing a girl!” you objected.
“How do you know?”
“Saw them together at the fair!”
Your mother blinked, her shoulders drooping.
“Oh…well then…there’s that…but don’t you think he was talking to her, nothing more?” she muttered.
Tears stung your eyes. False hope was not something you could afford. You grabbed the laundry basket with a grip.
“I’m going to do this in my room now…” you dismissed.
She put a hand on your shoulder to stop you.
“You…you have feelings for him, don’t you?” she asked.
You paused.
“Yes…that’s why it hurts…” you confessed.
She squeezed your shoulder.
“I’m glad you told me, Y/N; we can deal with your broken heart together…”
The laundry basket was placed on the table. You reached over to hug her. Quiet tears poured out of you for only a minute.
Though the sound of hooves made you look up. Then you gasped and jumped.
Joey was leaning his head through the windowsill to try to sample the cooling bread. You got out a tablecloth, batting it at him as Mum burst into laughter and so would you. Yes, bit by bit, day by day, your feelings for James Nicholls would pass…
Winter 1914
January arrived- cold, bitter, gloomy January. Thank goodness for the snow. It turned everything white and crisp and beautiful. It was one of those snowy days that saw her again. The slender blonde all the way from the summer. You knew in your stomach that it was her. She walked in with another fashionable coat and hat that you had eyed in a high-end catalog.
“Good day, welcome to Mrs. Snow’s shop,” Mary greeted, professional as always.
“The same to you,” she replied.
She only half-nodded at you as you looked about. Alice then turned the corner. She spoke in her chirrupy voice.
“Can I help you, Miss…”
“Corbyn. Sarah Corbyn,” the blonde lady introduced herself.
“Miss Corbyn, what are you looking for?” asked Alice.
“I am looking for scarves. The ones from Mrs. Valerie makes.”
“Those scarves? Oh, we just sold our last one, I’m so sorry!” Alice lamented.
“Oh, well, that is too bad…I know things run out for you here,” Sarah said with a smile.
“We will inform you when they are in stock! Ask any time!” Alice encouraged.
“How good! Thank you!”
Sarah sauntered around. Looking through items with a smile on her face. She then turned to you with a smile. She held up a bar of soap.
“Could I please have this Miss…”
“Narracott.”
“I should like to buy this lavender one, please,” she said.
She handed you the money and bought the soap. Shop bag around her arm, She then wandered over and got a newspaper, returning to you.
“Miss Narracott…there is a dance in two weeks, correct? There is the advert for the town hall…”
She pointed at it, and you glanced at it.
“Yes, yes, it is…Two per month,” you confirmed.
“I must ask you a favor. I am quite nervous despite myself! As a fellow woman, may I confide in you?” she cajoled.
“Yes. At least before Mrs. Snow arrives,” you said.
“Do you happen to know a gentleman named Captain Nicholls?” she asked.
Your eyes never left hers. You placed your hands on the counter to keep steady.
“Yes. Yes, I do.” You answered.
“My father invited him and a few of his men on a walk through the country this past Autumn. I joined them. It was a rather long walk all over. I do enjoy jumping from high places. I got to a tall rock, jumped off like so and Captain Nicholls caught me! It was the most thrilling moment of my life! And he’s quite strong too! Fathers invited him to call sometimes for tea- but I hope it’s for more than that! Miss Narracott, I believe I have affection for him and him for me! I do hope he likes me!” she voiced.
The ears floated in your brain. Never landing. Never processing. The images stuck to you, and you wanted to wash them off. But politeness and the fact you were at work forbade you.
“Other than the catching, what makes you think that?” you asked.
“Well, last Friday, I told him how I never usually go to dances. He asked why. I said, among other things, I tend to prefer better things to do with my time and I never have partners. He promised me two dances! Two! That’s a sign if ever!” Sarah continued. Her smile never drooped.
“That’s very…very good. Good for you,” you replied.
You desperately wished there was new cloth to fold or items to restock this minute.
“Well, do you think my father would approve?” she whispered.
There was a glint in her eyes. A thin eyebrow of hers arched up.
“He has no reason not to,” you answered.
“Oh, how kind you are! How good of you!” she replied.
It did not sound like a genuine compliment. She reached into her bag and retrieved her purchase.
“And I do like this soap! I advise you to buy it yourself! It helps keep away smells- especially that of farms,” she added.
It hit you like a slap. You forced your jaw shut else it’d hinge off. She then said her goodbyes, placed her soap in her bag and flounced away. Gripping onto the counter, you turned away to try to collect yourself. The three others all grimaced at each other and began to gossip about her.
“And she seemed so nice!” Mary cried.
Ida went up to you.
“I heard that last sentence! The nerve of her! Don’t you listen to her, Y/N! If she sets foot in this shop again, I’ll slap her! Mrs. Snow would fire me, but it’d be worth it!” she encouraged, rubbing your arm.
You stayed quiet.
To think this was the girl James Nicholls liked!! Other than her beauty and money, what did he see in her? Could he end up married to someone like her? All this- finding you, singling you out. Rubbing everything into your face. Why was she doing this? Had Nicholls somehow mentioned the Narracott farm? Then no doubt she found out that you- a single woman-lived there. And she wanted to make sure you knew she had her claws on him.
You let out a sigh. It would feel good to complain about her to Mum and perhaps Albert too.
Tumblr media
When you returned home, you ran upstairs. You stared at the rabbit drawing. It was still pinned up against the wall. You didn’t have the heart to tear it to ribbons or burn it. James was never yours, to begin with. So, you only settled for keeping it in the first drawer of your desk. It was too tender. It was too kind. You could always fold it up and look at it. It was a gift that showed kindness and appreciation. Even if not specifically to you, but to your family.
· · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · ·
That winter there was more ice than usual. It sleeted all over the ground. Poor Joey couldn’t break into one of his famous runs about the yard. He’d have to be careful or slip. A blizzard swept over for a week, keeping everyone inside and closing businesses. When it calmed down, men poured salt onto the ground. Everyone could walk around again like normal. Animal or human.
When the shop reopened, customers filed in, each one more demanding than the last. More than once you had to fetch Mrs. Snow to reason with them. Even your co-workers were all complaining.
“I don’t know if I can talk to another Mrs about hat pins now,” Ida groaned.
“I’d like to sit for a bit for once!” you sighed.
Everyone was quite grateful when the last customer left, and the hour struck for closing. Mrs. Snow turned the sign on the window to say “CLOSED”. You gathered your basket, and put on your hat, dark coat, and gloves. You managed to get yourself a new pair for winter. But you didn’t want to discard the single one- it was too pretty. You began to head out.
“Goodbye, Alice! Ida! Mary!”
They all wished goodbye to you.
But as you began to walk out, the wintry air bit you. You shivered with the snow falling down like sprinkles.
But after a few steps who should run into you but Captain Nicholls in his long coat walking about town. You did not notice any lady near him. He grinned and approached you. You fought the bitterness in your heart. You greeted him with a smile.
“Captain, it is good to see you. It’s been a while since you graced our farm!” you greeted.
“A certain storm provided quite the obstacle. May I walk with you, Miss Narracott?” he asked.
“Thank you… you may,” you permitted.
You kept walking on. His own long stride was slowed. Some leftover ice had stretched out to the roads. Motorcars and carts had to be slow. Not to mention people.
“You have lived here over a year, what do you make of it? Country life too quiet for your liking?” you asked.
“Oh no- it’s perfectly fine and comfortable to me!” he chatted.
“And the people?”
“Oh, everyone has been splendid! Quite splendid! All the men agree!”
You didn’t want to mention the women. Lips shut, you would not play the game of manipulation and false sweetness Sarah did.
“And how have they been?” you asked.
“Good and jolly. Not that the storm stopped training or patrolling.”
As you turned over one corner you realized that the road was slipping beneath your feet. Looking down, you saw ice below your feet. You even let out a gasp and held out a hand to regain balance.
“Miss?” asked Nicholls.
“I’m quite alright!” you tried to assure him.
There was ice right before your path for several feet. And as you tried to take another step, you felt yourself wobble. If you didn’t solidify your footing, you would trip. Nicholls looked over and saw you were swaying with your arms still open. He walked slower and heavier, side by side in his gait.
“Here Miss Narracottt-allow me!” he proclaimed.
He held out his hand and took your hand. Gloves on gloves.
“Let me help you, how does that sound?” he asked.
You nodded.
How warm his hand felt. Even beneath the leather - the only thing keeping you from the contact of his bare skin against your bare skin. You felt the air in your lungs pause, only to rush out for want of air. You became nervous and excited at once- fearful and thrilled. He smiled gently at you as he held your hand. How handsome he looked- a shining star in the sky, an angel in a uniform. Letting all petty thoughts of jealousy melt away if only for a few minutes.
He guided you on the ice. He advised you how to walk slowly. Side to side with full weight on each foot. The way a duck waddles on land.
You curled your fingers over the base of his hand. You could tell he was strong like Miss Corbyn said. He seemed unbothered to lend the support you needed to keep from falling. And how gentle his hands were despite their size and strength. The leather was kept clean, and his touch did not squeeze you, but it was the right pressure. How safe he made you feel. You lingered, enjoying the touch until you made it to the not iced sidewalk. Then he let go of your hand. Your own remained in the air until you retreated it back.
“There- are you alright?” he asked.
You blinked, coming back to reality. Feeling a bit of air where you missed his touch. Even covered in gloves.
“I am,” you confirmed.
“Is there anything else you need, Miss Narracott?”
“Well, no. There’s nothing. I only ask for a safe passage back home.”
“Then, do you need me to walk you back there? Is it icy?”
“It’s not as bad…but it’s there…”
“Then let me walk you back. I wouldn’t want you to fall and get hurt.”
Through the white, thick snow, he walked you there. Only holding your hand again if it seemed the only path forward had ice on it. It made you wish that the men of the town poured less salt about the ground.
Spring 1914
Finally, Spring arrived with pomp and splendor. With the turnips and crops blooming, you could use your wages to have a ticket for a dance and a new dress to go with it. But Dad insisted Albert accompany you there and dance too. Your brother grumbled when he heard.
“You’ll never meet any girls if you stay cooped up with Joey!” you teased your brother.
“Neither will you meet any fellows!” he retorted as you both cleaned up the dishes.
He looked around. Mum and Dad were relaxing by the fireplace. Then leaned in.
“But…will Lyons be at the party?” he whispered.
“I don’t know…don’t think so. Said he hates dancing. He told me he likes to spend evenings checking his accounts with brandy.”
The evening of the dance, you checked your mirror to make sure your hair looked nice. When it met your approval, you looked at the new dress on you. In its pink with shortened sleeves, it was the nicest one you could afford to splurge on. The color’s shade looked flattering on you. Just like the ones in your garden. You wanted to forget work, the family’s rent, Miss Corbyn and Nicholls, Lyons's interest in you…and there were plenty of men in town. You only wanted to have a good time while you still could. As it matched the season, you wanted to be like a flower. To enjoy being in “bloom” when you still had it within you.
Entering the dance hall, all was happy and astir. Though this time paid for and hosted by the local militia. It seemed every young person in Devon had arrived there. No Mr. Lyons but his son, David, was gulping down glasses of punch. It was a large place with the walls painted light green. There was an open space with chairs shoved to the side for the dancing. There were two long tables filled with refreshments and drinks. It was brightly lit with the new electricity running through the place. The crowd flocked inside, and many among them were the green-uniformed soldiers.
It felt warm already. You heard the cacophony of a thousand conversations appearing at once. Many held plates and ate standing or sat in a chair. Flowers, fresh with the season's arrival, decorated each corner. A string quartet and piano, played by locals, were getting their music books in order, and warming up. You didn't know which would intoxicate the partygoers faster. The wine and champagne, the music, the dancing, the thrill, or the flowers.
Then the host went forward and said that the first dance was about to begin. Men selected their partners. They brought the ladies, blushing and smiling, out onto the floor as the musicians turned their music books to the first page.
“I barely remember any of the steps!” Albert complained.
“Oh, please! The ladies will thank you later! There are never enough men in the dance hall! They’ll always appreciate it,” you replied.
“Well, where’s dinner? I’m starving!” Albert complained.
Both of you walked over to the table. As you began helping yourself to a plate, Albert went over to talk with his good friend, Andrew Easton. You did notice out of the corner of your eye was Sarah Corbyn. She dressed elegantly in purple. The richness complimented her blonde hair. A silk ribbon tied about her waist, accentuating how tiny she was. And of course, she was talking to all the soldiers. You turned your head. You didn’t want to see it. Didn’t want it in your face. No- you would do your best to smile and be charming. Do all you can to win over as many dance partners as the evening allows.
"Oh, Y/N! I am so glad! How much we missed you!" cried Alice, running up to give you an embrace. She was decked in a lovely yellow complimenting her brown locks.
"Alice! I've missed you too! Especially seeing every man in Devon fight to be your partner!" you said.
"Oh, stop it!"
"It's true and you know it!"
"Oh, you should see Mary- she's already on the floor!"
In one corner, talking to other soldiers, you saw Captain Nicholls. He had removed his hat and placed it under his arm. You even could make out his laugh as one made a joke with him. How striking he looked even among them. And his smile made you smile as well. The gentleman pointed to his silk cap and took it off, showing it to Nicholls. He inspected it, looking at it thoroughly with his handsome hands. Then he handed it back. Nicholls said one thing that was indistinguishable, which broke the group into laughter. When his head turned, you looked away.
Once you finished your plate, you met your friends. Beaming and smiling, you managed to find a partner for the next dance through a mutual friend of Alice’s. As you went over to a table to get a glass of lemonade, two soldiers walked by, chatting. Not once did they glance at you, engrossed in their conversation. You heard the tenor voice of the first one clear as chimes.
“…I would say I should be shocked, but I’m not…. always had a bit of the romantic in him…” the first gossiped.
“Hard as he keeps it in, he does, Old James. A romantic wouldn’t have that sketchbook…” the second said.
You paused. Realizing you wanted to overhear. Before you could stop yourself.
“He’s mad about the girl! He’s a Romeo but you’d never guess it when he charges…”
“Jamie says he lights up whenever someone asks about her…”
“You don’t think…he’ll make an offer, sooner or later? I bet her father would lose his head to have a Captain as a son-in-law!”
“Oh, it’s only a matter of time. I doubt it’ll be long…they say things are getting tense. With every alliance Britain got itself into…it won’t be long then…he’ll hurry her to the altar…”
Swallowing back tears, you promptly turned away. You would not, no, could not listen further. You joined Albert and Andrew. You would distract yourself, you would…
Besides, you were determined to move on. To distract yourself. To meet with every young, eligible man you could. To give yourself options. Before the next dance began, you turned to Andrew.
"How about a dance? You must break out into there!" you prodded.
"Why, sure thing, Y/N!" he agreed.
As you began to dance as he discussed how his dad was doing. Talked about Joey. About the Easton family dog. Andrew was a stiff and awkward dancer, but as he talked, he relaxed some. You then went to your friends.
"Ida...how many of the soldiers and officers have you met? Could you please introduce me?" you requested.
Ida's face lit up like it was her birthday.
"Oh, I know some!" she bragged.
"I want to spend as much time dancing as I can!"
"To make up for the lost time?" she asked.
"Yes," you replied.
It was mostly true. You were not going to tell anyone other than your mother how you felt about Nicholls. She kept secrets better than anyone.
"Then, let me show you one gentleman! Booker's his name and he's a wonderful dancer! Oh, and Mister Smith, too!"
Ida couldn't have been better. You found out you had plenty of young officers to meet and chat with. And some of them danced with you! Though often you had to sit down and rest your feet. Even to admire everyone. There was a good balance of sitting and resting with dancing. And with a full crowd, there were plenty of other handsome faces to focus on.
Even Albert himself was smiling a little. He danced with several girls. He blushed bright red when he missed steps but kept dancing anyway. You did notice David Lyons and how smooth new his grey suit was. There was a red-haired girl, very pretty, who danced two in a row with him. It looked like she was the one to endure his sneering.
“Ah, the Narracotts!” said a low, familiar voice.
Turning around, you saw Major Stewart. He bowed in his uniform, and you returned the gesture. And right next to him, there was Nicholls. Your heart leaped into its chest.
“Why, haven’t seen any of you yet! How are you gents this evening?” Albert asked.
“Oh, just fine! The men here- we’re all happy to have some fun!” he responded.
“I hope you’ve been well, Mister and Miss Narracott! We haven’t seen the two of you all evening!” Nicholls queried.
“We have been,” you replied.
“And Albert, how’s Joey?” he said.
“Fit as can be! And gallopin’ every day, sir!” Albert declared.
“Don’t overwork him so he cannot plow,” Nicholls advised.
“Oh no sir, only after the plowing’s done! You should have plenty of time to draw him again if you want,” Albert responded.
“I shall be glad to!”
His eyes softened. They turned to you.
“Then…Miss Narracott, could I have the next dance?” he asked.
You had no partner. You could think of no excuse. You felt stupid just standing there looking at him. Part of you swallowed a scream of joy. The other part cried “No!” There was no polite way to turn him down- ladies had to dance whenever a gentleman offered. You replied.
“Yes…yes you may,” you permitted.
He offered his hand, and you took it, swallowing. Realizing you felt his bare palm on yours. It was calloused by his work with weaponry. You felt both enthralled and relaxed from his tender touch. You let him lead you on as other couples made their way around.
Just like when he helped you when the road was icy. You can indulge in it. Let him take your hand. Enjoy only one dance with him. Just one.
You let him put one hand on your back. Feeling the light pressure. You could see his thick lashes and the blueness of his eyes. You put a hand on his arm, feeling the texture of the uniform. He smelled like light sweat from dancing and cologne. You felt his breath and could even tell the slight lift in his muscles when he inhaled.
“I hope you forgive me. I’m rusty at this. I used to go dancing all the time. With work, not as much…” you explained.
Other couples gathered on the floor around you. You looked directly at him and him at you.
“I can understand. I used to avoid them,” Nicholls confided.
“How come?”
“I was too shy when I was younger. Couldn’t gather the courage to ask a girl. Then when I did, I did the wrong steps. I’d crush a girl’s toe. They all will tell you as proof!”
The violins put their bows on the strings. And you started to dance with him. Moving with his lead.
“You’re keeping out of mine just fine…I think you’re a lovely dancer, Captain…” you encouraged.
“Really?” he asked.
“Like your drawings…you should enjoy it. You should be here…”
He led you to sway as you stepped your feet into a square pattern. You accepted it. Letting him start to pull and push you with the music.
“And Miss Narracott?” he said.
“Yes?”
“You look pretty as a picture tonight.”
Your mouth went dry, and you felt the racing of your heart against your chest.
“You’re very kind, sir,” you replied.
You continued the dance. Feeling the step of the music’s downbeat. He kept turning you around and you danced with him. Let the music take you both. You could almost hear his heartbeat from how close you were.
He took a step back and you took a step forward. When he stepped sideways you followed. It was all so simple. You clutched onto his hand and let his hand on your back press you closer. The waltz was at a moderate tempo. You felt eyes look directly into yours. You couldn't peal your eyes off Nicholls either. He gave a small smile. The way he would step into the downbeat was natural, and you found that you followed.
A glimpse at the crowd showed Stewart smiling, crossing his arms. But Albert's eyes were wide, staring intensely at both of you. He hadn't done that with your previous partners. Nicholls, as always, was dashing in his green uniform. His closeness made you notice details. You can see each button on it. How pressed and perfect it was. Smooth as the round buttons ran down his chest. The four pockets- two on top and two on the bottom are like windows on a building. His lighter green shirt contrasted with his darker green tie. The lovely and ornate cream decorations on his sleeves. The more obscene part of your brain wondered what he looked like underneath it.
It felt natural to dance with him. Natural as eating, as blinking. It was like there was a crook on your body, a niche, that only he could fill. He held you with both confidence and gentleness. He didn't throw you around like a ragdoll. His rhythm met yours. Each step you moved in tandem. Looking at him was as close as one could get to feeling drunk while completely sober. You became aware of how your breath must smell of the refreshments. You only saw slight sweat on his brow from the movement and the heat of so many bodies packed into one space. You felt your own breath become ragged and short. Being so close to him, almost like an embrace. He was quite a tall man, but he was not intimidating. If not, there was a delicacy in his touch, his stature. He could break you but chose not to. It was only a gentle press to keep you steady. You realized it was your fingers curling over his. There were several other couples dancing with you. But with him, that was easy to forget.
His hands even sweated a little. But you saw he was smiling. Your own lips parted, but no words came out. It was a gentle dance. He would sometimes glance at his toes to make sure he didn't step on yours. Then they returned to you. The movement was never forced. And you found the pattern too easy. One, two, three, four. One, two, three, four.
After the dance, you both paused, catching your breath. You felt as though you were coursing with fire through you looking at him. You could feel your chest heavy with each intake. It felt too soon for that dance to end. People clapped.
“Miss Narracott…are you-“
“Oh, dear Captain!”
In cut in Miss Corbyn. Blinking, you took a step back.
“Miss Corbyn! I hope you and your family are well,” he greeted.
“Couldn’t have been better! How kind of you to ask!” she chirruped.
She then turned to you.
“Ah, Miss Narracott, how good to see you,” she greeted in acknowledgment.
She then promptly ignored you back to him.
“Captain, you promised me two dances. Two!” she pouted.
“That was at the one in January!” he corrected.
“And what about this one!? Will you leave me without a partner?”
She turned to you.
“It is bad for a lady to be without a partner, isn’t it, Y/N?” she asked.
“It is bad…” you said.
She whipped her blonde hair back to him.
“Well, we can have a dance?” she pleaded.
“Then, I…I, Uhm, excuse me. Goodbye,” you replied, turning around, and leaving them.
You stomped to the corner to have some dessert and another glass of lemonade. The burning, hot sensation in your body from movement and his skin's touch required it. The unspeakable, shameful things you’d let him do to you as well as the gentle, loving things. And not to look at them. Anything to keep you from looking. You even turned around a chair for two dances and kept your face focused on the wall.
You then danced with one more bloke. Then another. Just to wash Nicholls from you and invite men to call for tea. And to end the night on a good note. Especially about how he was the best partner. How you could still feel the touch his hand burned onto you in the morning.
Summer- 1914
It was such a nice, sunny Friday all that afternoon. Perfect weather. But out the shop window, there were dark clouds. Thunder boomed ominously as your shift reached its last hour.
Returning home, you walked at a quick pace. The bright sun contrasted with the darkening clouds. There were some sheep in the middle of the path. You waved your arms and shooed them off. As you hurried towards your farm up the hill, it started raining. As you walked in, you saw your own parents inside for shelter.
“Where’s Albie?” you asked.
“Out riding!” your mother answered.
The rain turned to torrents. Lightning reached like a large, terrifying finger right through the clouds. It beat against the house in a never-ending fury. The rain broke through the roof and opened the windows. Gusts burst the door open.
Albert arrived, his shirt, boots, and overalls were drenched. Dad got out a tall pole to adjust the roof, so water didn’t break out. You and your mother went about to close and secure windows that the gusts blew open. Running upstairs, you saw that each of your rooms had some rain from the open windows. You shut them closed and secured them. But the rainfall punched against it, like a burglar insisting on getting in. Downstairs, you even saw that the Goose had broken into the house, shaking his white feathers dry.
“Shoo, Harold, shoo!” Mum scolded, pushing him aside.
But the defiant Goose honked in protest and went to a corner to tuck himself in for the night.
It was hard not to shake like a child at the sound of the thunder. It rattled the house when it boomed. But eventually, you managed to crash to sleep. Glad that Dad managed to seal the hole allowing your room to remain dry. In fact, as you lulled, the rain was beginning to sound peaceful.
The next morning, you discovered that the peace of the rain was only in its sound. The bottom field was flooded. You and your family drudged around, the muddy water up to your ankles, trying to save what turnips you could. Only a meager few in the whole field survived. But it was all a muddy, destroyed mess. It would be too late to begin to plant something else.
Albert ran off to check the rest of the farm. You and Dad sat by the fire. Mum fixed all a cup of tea, blankets wrapped around you. Dad only looked sadly into the hearth.
“I know what I can do. I’ll talk to Mrs. Snow. Ask for longer hours. I’ll work earlier or later. Or both. Whatever I must do…” you promised them.
But that Monday, Mrs. Snow said flatly that you were working the maximum hours. And that there wasn’t any need for early or late work.
It was that Friday you hurried home, your paycheck in your basket. Thank goodness it was pay week! With that, it would cover part of the rent. You would do it. You would gladly give every guinea. What need did you have for dance tickets or other indulgences now? If it gave everyone (including yourself) peace of mind, if Dad stopped drinking and staring into space with tears in his eyes, you’d do it. The choice was made when you first got the job! Even if it couldn’t cover all the rent, it was something! Then, you’d scrap up the turnip sales and rely on the animals. Yes, dinners would shrink. But your family would keep the house!
But you noticed a shiny red motorcar parked right outside. As you walked into the front yard, Albert was pacing about. Mum was trying to feed the chickens, pouring feed out from her apron.
“How long have you been out here?” you asked.
“About a half hour,” Mum answered.
“Where’s Dad, what’s going on? What’s Lyons doing here?” you asked.
As if in answer, the door opened. Out walked your father and Lyons. Albert took a step forward, then his steps froze. Mum glared at Lyons, her face red.
“Y/N, come on in the kitchen,” your father urged.
Today was not the Fifteenth. Not the usual day for paying the rent. His son and servants were nowhere in sight. Why you and not your mother and brother too?
“Mr. Narracott, may I have your permission to speak in private with your daughter?” he asked.
The answer hit you.
Terror gripped you. Nausea soured your stomach, and your legs and hands were shaking uncontrollably. You felt as if you could get sick in the yard. Or as if you could faint. You wished you could faint. Just so you could black out, and escape into nothingness. Then awaken in your room to a new day with nothing expected other than the usual. But no, you were in your body. You folded your hands.
“Yes sir, you can talk to her.”
Your father looked up at you. His eyes had both sadness and hope inside them. You clutched at his shoulder, urging him to stay. Stay with you. Don’t leave me, don’t leave me, please don’t leave me. He can talk with both of us, please.
“We’ll be right outside, my girl. He said he won’t talk long,” He said. He then put your hands down, walked outside, and closed the door, leaving you alone with Mr. Lyons.

“Honey We’re Shrunk!”: Chapter 1 (Rhett Abbott x Reader)
Tumblr media
Summary:  Royal was right, there was something weird about that hole in the west pasture. So what happens when Rhett, (Y/n), Amy and their kids wake up one morning and find that they’re only as big as a flea? Shit’s bound to ensue somewhere.
Tagging: @sebsxphia and if anyone else wants to be tagged, just let me know
Wabang, WY
May 30, 2023
“Oh c’mon you fuckin piece o’shit,” Rhett growled under his breath as he fiddled with the truck engine.
His phone suddenly started ringing, startling him before Rhett knocked his head on the rim of the hood, drawing a loud yelp from his mouth. Cursing the truck under his breath, he hit pause on the currently playing song before answering the call.
“Hello?”
“Hi yes, is this Mr. Abbott?” the woman on the other end asked.
“Yes this is Rhett.”
“This is Indira Singh, Amy’s teacher,” the woman replied. “Would you mind coming down to the school? I believe your brother tried to pick Amy up after school hours.”
“I’ll be right down,” Rhett answered before hanging up.
He was lucky he hadn’t thrown the phone halfway across the garage. He may not have been Amy’s biological father but she was still part of his family.....his daughter regardless.
Rhett quickly threw his shirt back on and hurried out to Royal’s truck, just as Royal was coming down the driveway. “You good boy?” Royal asked.
“Gotta go dad,” Rhett answered tersely. “I’m fuckin pissed.”
“The fuck happened now?” Royal enquired. “Trevor run through (y/n)’s rose-beds?”
“Perry tried to get Amy from school.”
Royal’s eyes went wide as Rhett hurriedly started the truck and practically zoomed out of the driveway, the furious cloud of dirt trailing behind him before Royal loped off to the pasture.
Amelia County Steiner School
2:50 pm
The classroom was full of the usual organized chaos surrounding the afternoon dismissal  and the last day of school as your eighth graders put up their chairs onto their desks, the clack of the wood marrying together with the chatter of the students as they gathered up their backpacks and bid you farewell for the day.
As soon as the last student had left, you opened up your bag, suddenly seeing a text message appear on your screen from your husband.
Rhett: I’m downstairs with Amy’s teacher.....Perry tried to pick her up.
You: WHAT THE FUCK??!!!
You felt your face going hot and a bloom of fear in your chest as you quickly gathered your bag and shut the door to your classroom behind you, hurrying down the stairs to the school lobby where Rhett was standing with Amy, her teacher and two other members of the school administration.
“I was about to message you and tell you to come down,” Brian O’Donnell told you.
“Well, my husband beat me to the punch,” you quipped. “What happened?”
“I caught Perry trying to pick her up and sneak her out of the school,” Mrs. Singh explained. “Brian heard her screaming in the halls and stopped him.”
“Did the cops get called?”
“Joy said she’s gonna try and track him down,” Brian explained. “Other than that, nothing major happened.”
“Thank God,” Rhett sighed, full of relief. “Listen guys, thank you for your help. It’s always appreciated.”
You and Rhett thanked the teachers, Rhett promising that he’d have a few fresh bales of hay to give Indira’s husband for their horses the next time they crossed paths. You both walked with Amy to go scoop up Hannah in her first grade classroom and then up the beaten dirt path to the kindergarten building where Tatum and Tanner spent their days during the school year.
“Alright ghouls, everybody in,” Rhett told them as he buckled Tatum and Tanner into their seats.
As soon as you had all shoved into the truck, you were off and headed for home, eager to get there, but also dreading what you would find when you got there. The six of you drove in near silence back to the house, hardly saying a word, while Tatum and Tanner had already fallen asleep. Rhett put his arm around you and drew you a little bit closer as the town of Wabang began to turn flatter and more rural. Within a half hour, you were home, the big house on the Abbott ranch pulling right into view.
Cecelia came right down the path, squinting in the late afternoon sun as she came to help you get the kids out of the truck. You didn’t even need to ask about what was going on. All too often in the past when she came down the path from the house, did you know what it meant.
“All good Ma?” Rhett asked.
“No, your dad’s absolutely rip-shit right now,” she sighed. “He’s gonna tear Perry a new one if he comes around and I don’t want the kids around for it.”
Rhett nodded, knowing what a toll this had taken on his mother for the last eight years. Ever since you and Rhett had taken full custody of Amy when she was a baby, Perry had been relentless. You were surprised that Royal hadn’t had a heart attack yet, coming home from a doctor’s visit with a note to try and find a way to lower his blood pressure.
You and Rhett helped to offload the kids while Cecelia and Winona Redwood, one of her closest friends, came to take them on a trail walk, hoping it would tire them out and keep them out of the house for a while. As much as you wanted to go back into town, you knew you had to get dinner ready and feed the family later. Rhett had to finish helping Royal fix the west pasture fence, but thank God the school year was over and the lighter workload could begin.
Gonna be a long day.....Rhett thought to himself.
West Pasture
Abbott Land
7:30pm
“Alright, looks like we’re good for the night,” Royal concluded, clipping the last wire on the fence.
Rhett didn’t say a word, but only nodded at his father.
Royal sighed. “Bud, listen....”
“Dad it’s fine,” Rhett told him. “They caught him before he could get Amy out the door.”
Royal felt awful. It still troubled him to think that Perry was coming after you and Rhett for taking Amy, going to whatever lengths he felt was necessary to irk the hell out of the two of you. “If he ever comes around here,” Royal told him. “I’ll try and chase him into the bullpen for you.”
Rhett and Royal shared a good laugh about the matter, musing on all the cruel and unusual punishments they could possibly dole out to Perry if he ever showed his face on the Abbott land ever again.
All of a sudden the horses began to snort, neigh and rear on their hind legs while the tiniest hint of a shudder rippled the ground beneath Rhett and Royal’s feet. They shot each other a quizzical look before venturing a little bit further off. The horses had completely moved to the other end of the field, a few of the foals skittering towards their mothers or their sires while Rhett’s big Kiger Mustang tossed his head and and snorted. There it was, the one thing he and Royal had been terrified to see. Their hearts were close to beating out of their chests, their palms growing clammy and the hairs standing straight up on the backs of their necks.
The hole.
“Holy fuck,” Rhett said breathlessly.
“I can’t believe that fuckin thing’s back,” Royal hissed.
The two of them crept closer to the hole, the goosebumps on their bodies going absolutely crazy. It was as though they could hear a beast within with loud, whale-like moans ready to emerge from the terrifying maw that had opened right up in the ground.
Rhett and Royal slowly backed away and once their backs were turned, the broke into a run, heading straight from the pasture to the house, never really minding the horses. They skipped a few steps coming up the porch before they slammed the door shut behind them.
“You ok?” Royal asked.
No answer. Only the few silent breaths and the rise and fall of Rhett’s chest.
“Rhett?”
“Huh? Yeah,” Rhett answered suddenly. “Yeah I’m good.....I’m good.”
“Go on up to bed,” Royal told him. “(Y/n)’s probably waiting for you.”
Rhett forced himself up the stairs, trying to keep the thought of you in the back of his mind, but all that seemed to pop in was the hole, that infernal drop into nothingness that made him shudder and the fear in him stir.
He entered your shared bedroom and kicked off his boots, hanging his hat on the bedpost and pulling off his shirt before throwing it into the wicker hamper next to the computer desk. The coolness from the mini-splits on the wall hit his sweaty skin as he crawled under the thin blanket on his side of the bed, his arm snaking right around you as the last shreds of sunlight darkened the room.
“Babes?” he mumbled.
“Hmm?”
“You still awake?”
You rolled over and kissed his lips, happy to have him in bed next to you. “Just waiting for you,” you said sleepily.
Rhett pulled you in closer before you began littering his face with kisses, your fingertips running over his nips that hardened from the cool air and your gentle little touches.
“Wanna get outta here,” Rhett mumbled as he settled in, burying his face in your neck. “Wanna take the kids and go to Bozeman already.”
You kissed his lips again. “We will,” you assured him. “Soon enough.”
“Wish I was the size of a flea,” Rhett mumbled again. “Give the shithead an itch so bad he’ll think it’s chicken pox.”
You laughed a little, pressing yourself closer to Rhett as you stroked the back of his neck, your fingers tangling a little in the curls that were forming. You lived for moments like this, when it was just the two of you, side by side without a worry in the world.
***************
In the dead of night, beneath the full moon, the ground around the hole rippled like the water after a pebble had been tossed in its midst. The horses neighed as they moved away, a blueish-white dust emerging from the hole and rolling across the land like a mist towards the house. The dust snaked its way through the windows and curled around the beds of the six sleeping Abbotts, working its magic until it disappeared into thin air.

Saying goodbye to Chris Beck before launch🥺
whiteboard | c.b.
a/n: i don't know what came over me here but i rolled with it. anyway apparently the whiteboards were a real thing for kids of space shuttle astronauts and i'm emotional 🥺
Tumblr media
Chris doesn’t leave until security has had to remind him about the schedule twice, refusing to let go of your hand until you’re literally not allowed to take another step with him, and even then he leans down to kiss you again, one more, just one more time.
"I’ll be back before you know it," he promises, as if your sadness about his departure wasn’t mirrored in his own eyes. And then, just like that, he’s gone and you have to go back to your tiny hotel room on your own until it’s time to watch the launch at the Space Center; you’re sick to your stomach.
You still feel nauseous when you’re led into the waiting area where the other family members are already pacing around the room; you spot Vogel’s children scribbling on the whiteboard in the corner, the top half of it already filled with notes and love messages for everyone on Ares III, to be scanned by a computer and sent directly into the spaceship’s communication system as soon as it reaches orbit. When the kids get bored with their drawings, you step closer, biting the inside of your cheek as you try to think of a message to write.
Finally, you settle on Chris, we miss you already, next to a very bad sketch of your dog Luna that you’re sure will make him laugh when he sees it. That’s all you mean by your message, truly; you don’t find out about the other reason for your nausea until a couple of weeks later.

We lost you on Thursday.
We laid you to rest today.
My entire life you were my best friend, and my Nana.
The dread and loneliness that consume me attempting to comprehend the reality that you’re gone feels insurmountable, but otherwise is indescribable.
And I ask myself a question almost identical to one I’ve heard numerous times before, but is now so raw, painful and real:
How can such a strong person,
a life brimming with so much energy and love,
a soul so powerful,
simply…disappear?
You lived life in a way that made the inevitable seem impossible. You made 95 years seem too soon. In the past 15 years alone you battled and fully recovered from heart surgery, a stroke, emergency surgery, cancer, and technically even covid. You could’ve lived forever, proved immortality is actually possible, and it would’ve been less of a shock than this. I genuinely never expected to outlive you.
Thank you for quite literally everything you’ve ever given me, and for all the memories I have of/because of you.
For the memories I share with D and H, and even with B; all the times I’d come over to your apartment on a Saturday evening, and we’d order Chinese food (was there ever a time you didn’t get sesame chicken?), then set up the pullout sofa-bed exactly the way you wanted it, and finally watch a movie or tv until we’d doze off. It didn’t matter how late mom and dad would pick me up the following day, they always came too early.
For all the trips the two of us would take to the mall to get dinner from some place in the food court, and then walk around and shop…and sorry for all the times I pulled you into Hot Topic, I know you hated going in there.
For the countless stories you got to tell me about relatives I never had the chance to meet.
Even for the times I took you to doctor’s appointments, because we’d still spend time together afterwards, whether it was going to the diner or Red Lobster, or just going back to your apartment and keeping you company.
And even for all the things that may seem unimportant or even silly;
Like when you were the only one who showed genuine anger after the girl who bullied me left a threatening note in my backpack, and you told me to “punch her right in her fucking face”.
Or that one time mom and I were at your apartment and she had seemingly gone through every channel on your tv, but still couldn’t find something you wanted to watch, so she gave up and handed me the remote. So I sat down next to you on the couch, then almost immediately found and put on IASIP for us; you thought it was the funniest fucking show(and of course you decided Charlie Day was your favorite before we’d even finished one episode).
I’ll miss everything about you, right down to the smart ass remarks, the multiple, sometimes nonstop phone calls, and the never ending voicemails that’d fill up the mailbox on mom’s phone.
I could go on forever, but it would never be enough; 5 giant trifold boards filled with cards and photos of you throughout the years with various family members and friends could only display the tiniest fraction of photos, and memories, that really exist. All of the family and friends in one room for you, and it felt so wrong that you weren’t right there along with us.
Your hair and makeup looked amazing. And I promise that you were taken care of by some of the best in the industry, at least one of them a former classmate of mine, so you were not left alone with strangers like you’d so often worry about.
Mom got you your newspaper and gave it to you along with $5;
Ash bought you your usual lucky numbers for the next lotto drawing and gave that to you;
I snuck a $20 into your pocket, just like you’d do to me and all your other grandchildren.
We made sure, and I think it’s safe to say that you’ve got pretty much everything you usually need and want, so you’re all set for wherever it is you may be.
The last time I visited you, before saying goodbye I told you, “I’ll see you soon”. I hope so badly that somehow, in some way, I’ll be able to.

Chapter 4: Moving In
Hi guys! I’m sorry it took a bit to get this chapter out, I’m working on COTF and some requests (as well as an event) so this has been put on the backburner a bit. But i’ll try and keep this updated once a week! This is more of a “filler” chapter but I still hope you enjoy 🥰!
Word Count: 2,317
Warnings: None
Tumblr media
After Zera had agreed to move into the Golden Dawn base she quickly finished up her work at the flower shop and closed it early so she could pack a few things.
She decided she would only pack the necessities, as she didn’t figure she would be there very long. Once Captain Vangeance finally realized that this was all a big joke he would probably have her removed from the base, at least that’s what Zera figured.
After she packed she looked at the ring box on the table, before Captain Vangeance had walked outside he had placed it on the table so she could put it on herself. Zera walked towards the table and picked up the box, she slowly opened it and couldn’t stop the gasp from escaping her again.
As she suspected, this was the most expensive ring from the jewelry shop! She pulled the ring out of the box and inspected it for a second before hesitantly slipping it onto her left ring finger. This would probably be the most expensive piece of jewelry she’d ever own in her life!
She felt a sudden pang in her chest and frowned, what was this? Maybe her breakfast from that morning wasn’t agreeing with her? She shrugged it off and grabbed her things before heading downstairs.
Zera made her way down the stairs and looked around her shop, she felt bad for leaving her babies behind. But she promised them that she would come back tomorrow to take care of them like usual, and even promised she would take a few of them with her back to the base so they wouldn’t be lonely!
She walked outside her shop and saw Captain Vangeance standing there waiting patiently for her.
“ Do you have everything you need?” William asked as he noticed she was only carrying one bag, and the ash-blonde haired woman nodded.
“ Yeah, I tend to pack light.” She told him with a small laugh. “ Besides, I can always come back and get more things if I need to.” She added and William nodded, he reached out to take her bag but she pulled it away.
“ I can carry it myself thank you.” She told him a bit too harshly, but she wanted to draw a line in the sand, this was strictly a business marriage to her and to him, well, she didn’t quite know what this marriage would be to him.
“ Ah, right.” He said softly, he then used his World Tree Magic to create two brooms for them to use to get to the Golden Dawn base.
Tumblr media
The two flew silently to the Golden Dawn base, neither one really knowing what to say, and to be honest they didn’t have much to say. William turned towards Zera a few times to say something but then thought better about it.
Soon the two made it to the base and Zera looked around, it was a lot bigger then she had expected. But then again, this was the best Magic Knight squad in Clover, so of course they were going to have one of the biggest bases.
Zera quietly followed Captain Vangeance inside, and the inside was just as impressive as on the outside! She suddenly stopped when Captain Vangeance turned to look at her.
“ You’ll be able to meet the other members of the squad a little bit later, so for now you can just focus on unpacking and settling in.” He told her simply and Zera just nodded, he turned back around and led her towards her room.
“ I’m sorry it isn’t much.” William told her as he opened the door to her room, Zera shook her head and walked into the room.
“ It’s alright, it actually reminds me of my room back when I lived with my family.” She told him with a small smile, she walked over to the bed and placed her bag down on top of it.
“ I’ve already made arrangements to expand one of the rooms in the base so you’ll have room for your plants and the rest of your things.” William explained as he stood in the doorway. “ I didn’t think you would be comfortable staying in my room so…” he trailed off softly, and Zera nodded. That would be pretty awkward, two strangers sharing a bedroom.
“ Well I’ll let you settle in, then I’ll introduce you to everyone.” He told her before turning to leave the room.
“ T-Thank you!” Zera blurted out suddenly, surprising both her and William. “ For um, for giving me my own room, and for expanding one of the rooms for me. You didn’t have to do that.” She added softly as she looked down at the ground.
“ Of course I did,” William said with a small frown. “ You’re going to be living here, so you should have a space all to yourself.”
“ R-Right! Of course.” She told him with a sheepish laugh, she watched as he closed the door behind him. She let out a sigh before sitting down on the bed.
Captain Vangeance was right, she would be living here from now on and it was going to take some time getting used too. As she looked around the room she noticed how dark and plain it was, she stood up and opened the window to let some fresh air into the room.
She would have to bring some of her babies when she went to the shop tomorrow. That would make her room a little livelier.
Tumblr media
After an hour or so Captain Vangeance walked back to Zera’s room and told her the others were back. She quietly followed him just like she had earlier. She wouldn’t admit it out loud but she was very nervous to meet them, it wasn’t just because they were all Magic Knights, but they were sort of like his family. At least, that’s what she assumed anyway.
The two stood outside the dining hall doors, and Captain Vangeance suddenly turned to look at her.
“ Don’t be nervous,” He told her softly and with a comforting smile. “ They may seem intimidating, but they’re harmless.” He added, he chuckled when all Zera could do was nod in response. He didn’t think she would ever be speechless.
‘Think of it like you’re meeting a bunch of potential customers, you can do this Zera!’ She tried to tell herself firmly, she moved her shoulders back and held her head up high. She could do this!
Captain Vangeance opened the dining hall doors and walked inside, with Zera behind him. She watched as all the Golden Dawn members turned towards him, they all stood up and gave him a small salute.
“ Everyone, this is Zera Cassia, my soon-to-be wife. Zera, this is everyone.” He said briefly. “ Everyone will probably introduce themselves one by one later after we’ve finished dinner.” He added with a small smile.
The two went and sat down at one of the tables, and Zera couldn’t help but feel everyone's eyes on her. She would sometimes hear people whisper and when she would turn to look they would go quiet.
‘Well, these people were harassing you for the longest time. So of course they’re going to be suspicious of you! Wouldn’t you be if your roles were reversed?’ She thought to herself, it was true, they all probably thought she was taking advantage of their Captain and was using him.
Which they wouldn’t be wrong about, since that’s exactly what she was doing.
Suddenly a group of Golden Dawn members came towards her and Captain Vangeance, they all stood there a bit awkwardly.
Two men and two women, one of the men had light blue hair and glasses, the other had messy black hair and bright amber eyes. One of the woman looked vaguely familiar with her wavy brown hair and warm smile, and the other looked eerily similar to Captain Vangeance except her eyes were a lighter purple and her hair was a little more platinum then the Captain’s.
“ We thought we’d go ahead and introduce ourselves, I hope that’s alright Captain?” The brown haired girl asked kindly, and Captain Vangeance nodded.
“ Of course.”
“ It’s nice to meet you Ms. Cassia, I’m Mimosa Vermillion.” The girl told her cheerfully, and Zera smiled. That’s why she looked familiar, she was related to the Royal Vermillions.
“ My name is Klaus Lunette and it’s an honor to meet our Captain’s future wife!” The blue haired man nearly shouted as he saluted her, Zera quickly held her hands up.
“ I-It’s alright! You don’t have to act so formal around me.” She told him quickly with a small laugh, he seemed very ‘by the book’.
“ I’m Neva.” The blonde haired woman said simply, and Zera nodded. She was very blunt and to the point it seemed. The platinum blonde haired woman gently nudged the dark haired man beside her and he let out a soft sigh.
“ Yuno.” He also answered simply, causing Zera to tilt her head. Half the group was cheerful and eager, while the other was more calm and reserved. It was quite amusing.
After the four introduced themselves others began to as well, and as their meal ended Zera had learned and memorized everyone in the squads names. Most seemed friendly even if they were a bit shy and quiet, but there were one or two who seemed a bit stand-offish towards her.
“ What’s that Alecdora’s problem? He was glaring at me all throughout dinner.” Zera muttered as she and Captain Vangeance walked back to her room, she had wanted to go around and explore the base a bit, but Captain Vangeance had told her he would give her a tour tomorrow.
“ Alecdora’s just protective, it’ll go away soon.” He told her with a chuckle. William had learned that you had to be patient when it came to Alecdora, once he got to know you then he would begin to warm up.
“ Yeah right, he looked at me like I was beneath you or something.” She muttered as she crossed her arms, maybe he figured out that she was only using the Captain for a ‘get out of jail free’ card? No, there was no way he figured it out that quickly, right?
“ That’s just Alecdora. He was like that with Yuno as well, and now they seem to be on better terms, at least a bit.” William told her, and he couldn’t help but find it amusing that she had an issue when someone didn’t like her.
“ It’s not very fun when someone doesn’t like you even before they get to know you is it?” He asked her, and he watched as she turned to look at him with wide eyes and he chuckled again.
“ I-I, well, that’s because you kept sending people to harass me! So what else am I supposed to think about you?” Zera stammered, and William nodded. They both knew the other had a point.
“ I’m still investigating that by the way,” William said as the two had reached Zera’s bedroom. “ I’m going to try and find out why members of my squad were harassing you.” He watched the ash-blonde haired woman nod.
Of course just because the Captain said he was investigating didn’t mean that’s what he was actually doing. Zera figured he was probably feeding her a line or two to try and placate her, but she wasn’t going to let him off the hook about it. But as she thought about it, wouldn’t it be better for her if he did stop investigating? If he found out about her former crimes then he’d call off the engagement right? Which would mean her immunity would become null and void!
“ Oh you can take your time investigating it!” Zera said quickly and with a bright smile. “ You’re a very busy person and I’m sure you have a lot more important things to investigate than that!” She added with a laugh which caused William to frown.
“ But-.” William started before she quickly cut him off.
“ It’s really fine so just take your time ok?” Zera told him before looking at a nonexistent watch on her wrist. “ Oh my look at the time! I’d better get to bed so I can open my shop tomorrow, goodnight Captain!” She added before she turned to go into her room.
“ Wait a second!” William grabbed her arm gently to keep her from running inside. “ You may not be able to go to your shop tomorrow.” Zera quickly turned around to look at him.
“ Why not?” William looked away sheepishly.
“ Because tomorrow all the wives and fiancé’s of the Captain and Vice Captains are meeting, and well, you were invited.” He told her softly, and she blinked.
She was supposed to keep her shop closed and neglect her babies just so she could mix and mingle with a bunch of uppity noble women and royals?!
‘But wait a second Zera, those uppity women like flowers and plants right? Maybe you could use this to your advantage! You could promote your store to them, and when they come in, you can raise the flower prices and make them pay lots more than what they normally would!’ She thought to herself evilly, she let out a small laugh at the idea, that was one way to get back at the rich nobles!
“ Um, Zera?” William asked hesitantly. “ Are you alright?”
“ I’m fine! I’ll…I’ll go to that meeting I guess, but when it’s over I’m going to my shop!” She told him firmly and William nodded.
The two said goodnight and William walked away after Zera closed the door behind her. He walked a bit down the hall before he frowned. She was acting awfully suspicious today, when they first met a couple of days ago she wanted him to investigate, and now she suddenly didn’t?
Something strange was going on, and he was going to find out what.

Thank you all so much for reading and I hope you all have a good day 🥰!

Before We Start...
I am not related to or affiliated with the show Sister Wives, Kody Brown, any of his 18 children, 3 former wives, 1 current wife, anyone he may be courting currently, anyone he may have courted in the past, or TLC. Truth be told I haven’t even seen every single episode--though I have seen most of them and I doooo watch a ton of reality tv gossip on Youtube and I totally follow these people on social media. It’s my guilty pleasure. If you’re here, it’s because you relate. Everything you will read outside of this post will be a figment of my overactive imagination, and is meant purely for fun. In this case yes I’ll be using names of REAL people who DEFINITLY exist, but for all intents and purposes in this they will be characters. I will draw inspiration from the show, from Youtube videos, social media posts, gossip magazines, and website achieves (because once it’s on the internet, it’s always on the internet.)
I can not stress enough that none of this is to be taken as fact!!!! I hope this will all be taken with a grain of salt, as good fun. I can’t think of another family with kids who grew up on camera under unusual circumstances who have as adults not had a major scandal, and I don’t see it happening either. Like, none of these kids are drug addicts, or getting arrested or murdering anyone!!! The odds were against them, man, but they all seem like respectable and loved members of their communities. That’s commendable af.
I’ve been making fun of reality TV since survivor came out when I was 8 years old. Later on when I was closer to 16, my mom and I would go shopping and do accents pretending to be Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn....analyzing my outfit options as if we were critiquing them to see if they could make it to the final round. And before you say it, yes, my mom IS that great!
I have me a fancy Bachelor of Arts degree in Media & Communication Arts from Pace University. That degree had writing enhanced courses, a ton of journalism courses, writing seminars, and that’s always been my jam! I can express myself through written word so much better than speaking out loud, and I’ve always written. I was the kid who said “YESSSS!” when the teacher announced that the test would be nothing but essay questions.
I can argue any point in writing, even points I don’t agree with. I can go anywhere, and I’m not limited to things like gravity, money, time, the weather, or the laws of physics! I’ve always been drawn to writing, and have used writing to cope with whatever was going on at that time. Starting with writing short stories about flushing the school bully down the toilet, to a screen play about exacting revenge after I’d had my trust broken, to get my final credits for my bachelors degree.
It was only recently I realized I could put the two together. I’m not aware of any Sister Wives Fanfics, and I was recently commenting on a video by RealiTeaSquad when it hit me that I had a great idea for a totally non-sexual silly fanfiction. I’ll try to watch my language so many ages can enjoy this, but I swear like a sailor, so I make no promises.
I am also hoping to work on a few other projects:
Sausage Queen: A Royal Spicy Italian Sausage with super powers who saves the day in her underwear, pretty self explanatory
The Chonky Princess: An over-weight princess with an endocrine disorder doesn’t let her weight keep her from keeping up with the other princesses at princess boarding school.
Low-Budget Laura: A Blog with tips for low-budget livin’! You know, ballin’ on a budget! Where to shop, coupons, deals, life hacks, recipes, “jazzin it up”, crafts, and more!
Hopefully I’ll be able to get enough of those done to start being able to link to them soon! And I’ll be starting to work on chapter one and publishing it soon! I’m really excited about this, and if anyone ever wants to contribute ideas or art work or whatever I’m so into it! Eventually I’d like to do a dramatic reading with different voices for different characters in a youtube video. Just bare with me as all of this will be done in my spare time and I do have a 41 year old man-child to care for and 2 dogs and of course a whole life--I mean who am I kidding I have no life lol!!! but I’m just throwing it out there I will try to release at least one chapter a week and keep it flowing regularly, but clearly providing for my loved ones will always come first as it should for you as well!
Anywho, make good choices and I’ll be publishing Chapter 1 soon!!! Stay tuned!!!

“Helloooooooooo~!”
Tumblr media
“Did somebody call for a sweet and adorable announcer?  Here I am~!”
Tumblr media
“I hope you’re ready for a brand-new work of art featuring not one, but two of ImNobodyUKnow’s OCs!”
Tumblr media
“That’s ‘original characters,’ just so you know.”
Tumblr media
“Before we get into that, though, let’s--”
Uh, actually, I think we’ve keeping the public waiting long enough, so...we’re just gonna skip straight to the drawing this time.
Tumblr media
“...”
“..........”
“...........................”
Tumblr media
“ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?  I haven’t gotten to do any announcing in five months!”
Yeah, yeah, I know.  You’ll get another chance soon, I promise.
(Thank goodness she doesn’t know any swear words...)
Tumblr media
“Mmm...  It’s like I’m just in the background or something...”
Now, now.  Take her easy, sweetheart.
...Hey, I just remembered -- that’s the name of “big reveal” number 53!
Our story begins on the high sea aboard a cargo ship, where a certain young Sailor Girl is recuperating from a battle with her archnemesis...which, in her case, is her own temper.  Thankfully, she had someone there to assist her in that recuperation.
Tumblr media
What led to this moment, you ask?  A few days earlier, she was lucky enough to earn a position as a crew member on this ship.  While it wasn’t exactly her dream job, her passion for sailing made it an opportunity she couldn’t turn down.  What she didn’t count on was her boss being a stickler for details, as well as a great big hothead.  On one unpleasant occasion, he decided to give her a hard time for missing a few spots during her deck-swabbing duty.  Luckily, she had the state of mind not to shout back while he fussed at her, but being a bit of a hothead herself, her thoughts ranged from, “Calm down already.” to “If you want me to kill you, just say the word.”  Can you relate?
Those ugly thoughts remained with her until the next morning, so she decided to get away by herself when, as mentioned before, someone took notice of her and came by to offer some reassurance.  This someone happened to be a member of the British Royal Navy, whom we’ll call “Sailor Man” for the time being -- not to be confused with this one, of course:
Tumblr media
This man, having been through plenty of hardships himself already, was kind enough to listen to her vent for a while before gently grabbing her shoulder and offering a friendly smile and the words, “Ahhhh, take her easy, Miss!  Some people just ‘appen to be that way.”  She didn’t respond, but she took his words to heart, and did her best to forgive her boss’s insufferable scrutiny from then on.  She and Sailor Man also ended up becoming close friends, buuuuuut that’s as much as I’ll share about the two of them for now.  ; )
I’ve actually been meaning to make this drawing ever since I made those Sailor Girl sketches a few years.  This sketch in particular was one I just had to create a bigger picture for, as I mentioned in the write-up for it.
Tumblr media
And now, lo and behold, here it is!  X D  If I get the time, I might try and make full pictures of the other seven sketches as well.  I guess we’ll see, won’t we?
I had one other reason for drawing this, though -- it’s meant to be a tribute to all those who’ve helped me calm down and keep things in perspective when I've been in similar situations.  Dealing with cranky bosses, angry customers, unfair treatment...  I’ve got some stories to tell you there, folks, and the thoughts and emotions that resulted from those moments are pret-ty darn ugly.  (Don’t worry, I’ll spare you those.)  Thankfully, I received the same sort of help as Sailor Girl from my family, my friends, and the loving God who put them in my life.  While I still struggle with letting go of the past, I couldn’t possibly be more grateful for the kind of people who know how to bring you back to reality.  God bless all y’all.  : )
Aaaaaand...  Ah, right!  The pictures I used for reference.  Sailor Girl’s hairstyle was inspired by Chi, a character created by wonderfulworldofme, as I’ve mentioned before, while the rest of her was mostly adlibbed.  Sailor Man was also mostly adlibbed (and with that in mind, I’m surprised he turned out so well), but his facial structure -- specifically his chin -- was inspired by one of my favorite characters from The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles 2: Resolve -- one Enoch Drebber.
Tumblr media
I thought about adding those crow’s feet to his face, but then I decided it would make him look a little too old.  X )
His outfit is based on a uniform worn by Captain Edward Vernon (1723–1794):
Tumblr media
I didn’t realize he was a captain when I grabbed this image, but...no harm done, right?  *shrug*  (Apologies to any historians reading this if I messed something up there.)
And finally, the ship’s deck they’re standing on was based on...well, a picture of a ship’s deck:
Tumblr media
Drawing all those ropes and the railing was a challenge, not to mention that tiny basket, but I think it paid off.  The reflection of the pale sunlight from behind the clouds on the sea was also fun to try to reproduce.  I did my best, but let’s face it...God’s a way better artist than me.
And thus, our tale of anger, reassurance, and forgiveness comes to an end, but don’t worry, ‘cause Sailor Girl’s adventures are far from finished, me laddies!
And don’t worry, I’ll give her and her British companion proper names eventually.  ; )

HEY GUYS! I just wanted to take a minute to say
Tumblr media
✨⌛️I have not forgotten about all the amazing requests you’ve dropped into my in box!!! Anyone waiting on a request I promise I’ll get to them soon 😭😭I’ve just been super busy with work as well as drawing copious amounts of fan art for bruno and my OC!!⌛️✨
I just wanted to take a minute to introduce you all to my little Bruno family while I was here! 💚💚
I’m not sure if anyone will care to read about my OC and her kids but I’ve decided to post it anyway!
Tumblr media
Her name is Vanessa 💚
Here’s a little about her and the relationship she shares with Bruno:
She’s 30 years old, but just as short as half of the kids in the Encanto! It’s the on going joke that Tío Bruno managed to find a wife shorter than he is.
When I say short, I mean she’s TINY. She’s only 143 cm. (4’8)
Her family owns a bakery in the Encanto. Delgado Dough
She has one sister who is 16 years of age. Her name is Pamela and they do NOT get along.
She totally thinks her sister is a pampered spoiled little princess who’s never had to lift a finger to help their parents and their bakery.
Before marrying Bruno, she’d work the bakery in the mornings and dedicate her nights to painting just at the edge of the village under the night stars.
She loves the arts, all forms. Music, painting, drawing, dance.
She’s quite the musician, seeing as her father’s favorite past time was pushing forward his knowledge and love for music
It definitely helps her adjust into the Family Madrigal. A house so full of music and talent.
Her favorite color is coincidentally green! She’s always been drawn to the color, it feeling so natural and beautiful.
In fact one of the first things Vanessa says to Bruno is “I like your ruana. Green is such a beautiful color, and it really looks nice on you. It brings out your eyes.”
He is FLUSTERED. He could have choked on his own tongue.
He stood there opening and closing his mouth trying to think of a comeback until Mirabel put the poor man out of his misery and interjected.
She found it kind of endearing. She’d never seen someone react to a complement like that.
Once they met, Bruno would be in town every day just hoping to bump paths with her again.
If you’ve ever heard of In The Heights (another amazing soundtrack done by the lyrical genius Lin Manuel Miranda) Bruno reminds me of Usnavi when it comes to Vanessa. Especially in the song “It Wont Be Long” when Usnavi and Sonny are singing Vanessa’s name.
Mirabel told him multiple times “Tiooo just talk to her already! Come on let’s go let’s go! Make a move!”
He eventually listened… he’s just…slow about making his first move.
Painfully slow.
When Bruno brings her home she has no trouble settling into the family.
Vanessa always tells Bruno’s nieces and nephews that she doesn’t have a favorite.
She does.
It’s Mirabel. Just don’t tell anyone else, especially Mira.
She also bonds pretty well with both Pepa and Julieta.
She definitely finds it easier to bond with Julieta however. They just have a similar interest in cooking, and they both have this nurturing aura about them.
Her and Pepa definitely have a rocky relationship, neither of them caring for each other at the start. They couldn’t seem to see eye to eye but now they get along thick as thieves.
Vanessa’s relationship with Alma though….is complicated. She always grew up admiring the woman, but when she realized all the trauma and pressure the founding Madrigal placed on the family’s members, her perspective shifted.
She tries to keep her emotions towards Alma’s blatant mistreatment of Bruno hidden, but sometimes it’s hard. When her husband breaks down in her arms from the overwhelming burdens and traumas of his past, it takes her everything she has not to say something to her mother in law.
With that said, Vanessa would defend Bruno with her last breath. Rights for a Bruno Madrigal was the hill she’d choose to die on.
Her family is pretty comfortable with Bruno. The only person she has to defend him to is her sister.
God she’s so annoying! 16 years old and thinks she knows everything about everything! “I heard he was 7 foot tall…he looks BARELY taller than you.”
She’s one protective mama bear. She’s protective of her husband and even more protective of their babies….
Tumblr media
Sophia and Pedro. Bruno’s weak point.
Sophia is 7, and the biggest little trouble maker you’ll EVER meet. Don’t get me wrong, she’s not a bad kid, she’s just a little menacing sometimes.
Her gift definitely leads her into a lot of trouble.
Her gift is mimic. It’s kind of like her cousin, but instead of shifting her shape, she can perfectly copy the sound of anyone or anything. (Etc. her mothers voice, an animal, a baby crying.)
She is such a little menace when it comes to using this power. Her and her cousin Camilo are a sight for sore eyes together. They like to pull pranks on the entire family. Camilo will shape shift and Sophia will throw her voice from another room. Truly the wombo combo.
She definitely is a bit spoiled…so if Vanessa says no to something, she’ll try and trick her father.
She usually can. Bruno’s disappointed in himself every time for falling for it. Vanessa is also upset everytime he falls for it.
She doesn’t abuse her gift too much though, most of it’s in the name of fun and games.
Her favorite cousin is Luisa. She wants to be big and strong and cool like Luisa one day.
Pedro is 5 years old.
He is the SWEETEST little boy in the world.
Vanessa literally hit copy and paste on bruno. The kid is the spitting image of his father at that age.
He’s a little sensitive guy, and a huge mamas boy. Is always attached at Vanessa’s hip.
His gift is like a sixth sense. He can talk to the dead and see them.
The first few days with his gift were overwhelming. He refused to stay in his room, crying every time he went near it. (If you’ve seen coco, it looks similar to the land of the dead. ) Definitely the biggest room in the house.
He was petrified every time he saw a spirit, clutching onto Vanessa’s dress begging her to make them go away.
The first spirit to try and talk to him is of course Abuelo Pedro.
He sits down with the boy and explains to him that he would have never blessed him with such a strong and important gift, like his father’s, if he didn’t think he was capable of handling it.
Pedro soon becomes used to his grandfathers presence, and learns to find comfort in his gift.
The little sugar skull on his ruana is a gift from Mirabel, something to make him feel less scared about his gift.
He’s Abuela’s new golden child.
Sorry Isa.
Not only is he the baby’s baby, and her last grandchild, he is always very vocal about sharing messages from Abuelo.
Abuelo always tells Pedro to relay a message to Abuela every morning, usually something along the lines of “let her know I’m here waiting for her, and that I think she still looks beautiful.”
Bruno’s low key a little jealous of the relationship his son and Abuela have.
When Alma passes on, Pedro is devastated. He looks for Alma every night, panicking when she doesn’t appear right away.
“What if she’s lost? What if she doesn’t come back! What if I never get to see Abuela again!”
When she finally reappears, he runs through the house letting everyone know that Abuela is rightfully back in the house with the Madrigals.
✨⌛️ If you stuck around to read all of this TYSM! I just really love the characters I’ve created and the stories I have for all of them! After I finish some of the requests I have I want to start posting little short fictions of things I think happen between Vanessa, her husband, their kids, and the other Madrigals!⌛️✨

I LOVE your ML Lion King AU!!!! And also basically any of your LK stuff I just went on a search/liking spree lol sorry. 🙈
I had a few questions, if that’s allowed?
1. What kind of lions are the Dupain-Cheng family? Since their pelts, especially Sabine and Marinette’s, are very dark. Or were you just making stuff up for the AU? I wasn’t sure, since you seem to know a LOT about the Lion King.
2. Is there a reason why Alya looks like she kinda has a mane, or was that just your way of showing off her canon hair? Either way I really like it!!!!!
3. Why does Zoè look so scared/sad in your drawing of her? Is she okay? Or is that just her being sad that Queen Audrey and Princess Chloe don’t really accept her?
4. I saw you mention the Tsurugi pride allying itself with King Gabriel. But Kagami is a member of the Lion Guard. I thought only members of the Prideland’s pride could be part of the Lion Guard? Of course that would also exclude Adrien, technically. Are you just changing it up for your AU, is there more info we don’t know about Kagami and Adrien yet, or am I wrong about the requirements of the Lion Guard? (I will admit I don’t know a lot about the canon Lion Guard, so I’m curious lol)
5. What’s a Leopold (?)? I think you mentioned Luka being one? Also I just wanted to say your design for Luka is great! I still prefer Kovu, but Luka is fun too lol. He does look a little stoned though - and honestly I find the thought of Luka being high hilarious for some reason lol
6. Are all the classmates gonna be part of the pride? I would LOVE to see your takes on them! I already can’t wait to see more of Marinette and Adrien, but I’d love to see haughty Princess Chloe too! 👑
Okay I’ll leave you alone now! 🙈 Love you and your AU k thanx bye!
Sure thing i love questions about this AU!
1. Tom is just a typical african lion while Sabine and Marinette are Asian lions! In The Lion Guard Asian lions look like this:
Tumblr media
The lionesses specifically seem to have a very visble mark in their backs, which is what im using to differentiate them from the typical african lions.
Grey lions, on the other hand, have been a thing since Simba's Pride:
Tumblr media
So the grey color palette is not unusual. This is all my reasoning to make Sabine, Marinette and Kagami look that way. And im also using their clothes instead of the color skin as pelts, while with the males, is easier because their manes are their hair's color.
2. Showing off xD she has fluffier fur hehe
3. Yeah, she has a lot of insecurities and she doubts her position as The Strongest, since Audrey has made her feel like nothing and Chloé doesnt accept her as her sister.
4. I asked some people in the fandom that has watched the show more than me and is up to interpretation? But the agreements is that, once chosen, they need to live in the Pridelands. So, in the lore of my AU, that applies as well.
I explained that Adrien kinda loses his powers if he is not close to Marinette because of this rule. The Tsurugi pride is indeed in ally with Gabriel but it’s more of “i want to live here because i dont want to make an ally with the Pridelands royals cause they suck and is convenient” rather than being full pals lol. Kagami does end up moving to the Pridelands after she is chosen as The Bravest, and she visits her mom from time to time. Tomoe agrees to this because she is proud of her daughter’s achievements.
5. Leopon! It’s a hybrid between a male leopard and a lioness. So Jagged is a leopard and Anarka is a lioness.
6. Yes, they are all part of the Pridelands! I do want to draw all of them, but i cant promise it will be soon tho. Chloé, tho, she is coming up next!
Thank you so much for asking!

please write something about Harry overhearing the reader’s friend tell her that Harry doesn’t spend time with her that she deserves someone better they hang up b4 the reader can say anything like angst to fluff
Thank you for requesting!
This is 80's harry lol
WC: 2.4K
Harry pauses the music on his Walkman, slipping the headphones off his ears to rest around his neck while he fiddles with the key to his apartment.
She had spent the night—his angel. It had been quite the set up, since she still lives at home with her parents while finishing college, a little white lie was passed around to cover her absence. Harry wasn’t a secret by any means, but her parents weren’t the most open minded, and a small fib was easier to handle than trying to rehash the same discussion of y/n being a grown woman. It was hard enough for her to get their approval for college...one mountain at a time.
Harry’s ears burn as he sets the groceries down in the kitchen, the thought of her still tangled up in his sheets beckoning him back to his room, is enough to drive him wild. He doesn’t catch himself zoning out until the phone rings. He untangles his music off his shoulders and yanks the phone off the wall, but y/n has beat him to it, her soft morning voice greeting Caroline before Harry can utter a word.
His brain is too slow in making the connection that he should hang up. That he shouldn’t eavesdrop on his girlfriend’s private conversation. That he owes her the respect that her parents never give her. But he hears his name, specifically, he hears Caroline ask y/n how last night was, so the phone stays glued to his ear.
“Amazing,” she purrs, and Harry’s stomach flips. “We did it like, three times.”
The girls giggle, and Harry shuffles on his feet with a veiny blush spreading all over his body. He can imagine y/n draped in his sheets, phone cord wrapped around her fingers, just a few steps away from him
“Better be nothing short of amazing,” Caroline says, “with what little time he gives you anyway. Ugh, if Tony ever left me hanging as often as Harry, I’d dump him so fast.” She smacks her gum into the phone and Harry flinches. “He tried to ditch me one time to go see Scarface with Rob, and I was like, hell no, you’re taking me skating like you promised. Honestly y/n, you can do better. You’re surrounded by college boys, go find a future doctor.”
The phone almost slips from Harry’s hand, but he catches it and hangs it back on the wall, just in time for his entire world to start crumbling to his feet.
Did he really not spend enough time with y/n?
How long has this been a topic shared between them?
And why hasn’t she said anything before?
Harry stands in the middle of his kitchen, immobilized. He can’t lose her, especially not to something he can fix. She’s been his girl since they were sixteen, there’s too much history between them, or so he thought.
He files through the memories he has of them together, trying to quantify them, trying to see where he started slipping.
Maybe it’s when he took over his dad’s business? But she knew how demanding it would be, and always supported him. Or maybe it’s because they don’t go out as much? Between him managing an appliance store, and her working towards a bachelors, they often opt for nights on the couch watching SNL reruns.
His mind is foggy, and he doesn’t catch his bedroom door creaking open.
“H?”
Harry startles back to present, gripping the counter as y/n emerges from his room wearing nothing but his t-shirt.
“You okay? Look like a deer caught in headlights.”
“Mm, no, fine.”
“I heard you come in a bit ago.” She flicks her eyes over his kitchen, looking for the breakfast he had promised to make almost an hour ago.
“Didn’t want to be too loud.”
“Oh, alright.” She smiles, attempting to diffuse whatever awkward tension has settled in his home. “Well, cook away! I can help too.”
He grabs her wrist before she reaches the fridge. “No, I’ll make it for you. Go back to bed.”
“You sure?”
He nods, forcing a smile.
She peers back over her shoulder twice on her walk back to his room, hoping to figure out what’s going on, but learns nothing.
As soon as his door shuts, Harry flies around his kitchen, grabbing what he needs to make the fastest breakfast in the world.
He’s going to spend every free second he has with her, and doesn’t want to waste any if he doesn’t have to.
***
Harry knows he’s borderline annoying. And he knows his actions are beginning to appear creepy, if not bizarre. He tags along with y/n everywhere she goes now, even at the doctor where he almost followed her back to her exam. She gently placed her hands on his chest and told him that she would rather the doctor do the job, promising she’d be out in no time.
She’s been tiptoeing around him too, not sure what to make of his new routine of gluing himself to her side, hoping it will wear off and things will go back to normal.
But she waits and she waits, and normal never resurfaces.
“H, baby, I can’t concentrate with you so close to me.”
Harry looks offended, slipping his reading glasses off his nose and closing the book he was halfway through, giving her his full attention when he asks what she means.
Y/n peers around the library, not wanting to have this discussion so publicly, but too keyed up to wait any longer. “I’ve just noticed that you’ve...been a little clingy lately? More like a lot.”
“I just wanted to spend more time with you.”
“You’re picking me up, and walking me to my classes—”
“Thought that was nice?”
“You don’t even go to this school. Listen, the sentiment is nice, but I’m starting to feel a little suffocated.”
Harry bites his cheek so hard he draws blood. “And what did Caroline have to say about that?”
“What?”
“I’m sure that nosy friend of yours had a lot to say about me when you brought this up.”
“Excuse me!”
“Quiet, please,” one of the staff members shushes y/n, “Or I’ll have to ask you to leave.”
Y/n ignores the snickers from a table of girls nearby, recoiling her embarrassment and turning it to anger. Her voice, although lowered, now drags out of her mouth in sharp tones. “What the hell are you talking about?”
“I heard everything, that morning Caroline called my phone to talk to you about how crummy of a boyfriend I am.”
That morning, now a month ago, is hardly a memory in y/n’s head. She fights around for details of the conversation, but comes up empty handed. “I still don’t know what you’re talking about, and frankly, I don’t care.” She starts closing all her books and gathering her school work to shove into her bag.
“Where are you going?”
“Home.”
Harry blinks, fumbling for his next question as y/n hurries across the library. He’s quick to catch up with her, waiting until they’re outside where they don’t have to whisper. “Don’t walk, I have my car.”
He reaches for her shoulder but she shrugs it off. “I’m going home. My home, not yours.”
Harry freezes on the sidewalk. She continues on her way until she disappears around the building. A few students yell out at Harry, making fun of the guy who, from a distance, just got rejected. He flips them off and heads to his car, beating the steering wheel all the way back to his apartment.
***
“You’ve been studying an awful lot lately,” y/n’s dad comments from across the dinner table. “Do you have a big test coming up?”
“Hm?”
“You spend the night with Rayna almost every weekend.”
“Oh, uh, yeah. We have a lot of tests.” Y/n spoons a bite of mashed potatoes into her mouth, thankful neither of her parents went to college. It’s allowed for more stretched lies when she sleeps over at Harry’s. “Like a lot. Every week.”
Her mother hums from her seat, nodding to save her spot in the conversation while she finishes chewing. “We told you how hard it would be. But you wouldn’t listen.”
“That’s not—” “Shelly’s daughter just got a job as a receptionist, over at that dental office by the mattress store.” Her dad points at y/n with his fork. “You could ask her if she knows of any other places looking for a girl.”
“I’m not going to have a job where the requirement is girl.”
“You’re taking this too liberally, dear. Oh Lord, John, that school did just what you said.”
“No—”
“That’s what happens, girls go off to try and get a degree...and what for? What are you going to do when you get married and have kids?”
“Kids!?”
Her mom scoffs. “Well you’re not going to be able to raise children and work.”
“Are you two serious right now? It’s 1985, not fifty-five! Women go to college, they work, some of them don’t even get married! Or have kids!”
“When you were little you couldn’t wait to be a mom. Now all of a sudden you’ve changed your mind. That never would have happened if we hadn’t let you go off to that damn school.”
“Yes I’ve changed my mind! If it hadn’t been for that school, I never would have realized that it’s my own mind to change. It’s my own life to do whatever I want with, not yours.”
“Well I am—” Her dad is interrupted by the door bell echoing outside the kitchen. “One minute. We’re not done with this yet.”
Muffled voices stagger from the front door while y/n pushes the food around her plate. She hopes that whoever is at the door keeps her dad busy for a while. She knows her mom won’t have these types of conversations without him, which just showcases the lifestyle she is adamantly trying to avoid. One that was passed down to her parents, but y/n is determined to squeeze herself out of that narrative no matter what.
“Y/n!” her dad calls, “you have a visitor.”
Y/n peers up at her mom, both women exchanging confused glances before they go see who had arrived.
“Oh,” y/n says dully, “It’s you.”
Harry stands with his hands shoved into jacket pockets, peering at each family member before speaking. “Hey, uh, I was hoping we could talk. Privately.”
Y/n nods, and leads the way back through the kitchen to the back porch. She’s not really in the mood to be talking to him, or having this conversation, but right now he’s a free ticket away from her parents, so she accepts.
They sit halfway down the steps, just like they’ve done a thousand times before. Her on the right, him on the left. Usually his arm is thrown over her shoulder, and their knees bump together until Harry pulls her in so close that not even a breeze could fit between them, but now they’re both collected on their respective sides of the wooden step.
“Heard the new Prince song?”
Y/n rolls her eyes. “It’s been a week.”
“Exactly, a lot’s happened in a week. Prince came out with a new song, Michael Jordan’s rookie of the year, and there’s gonna be a Rocky four.”
“Did you come over to talk about everyone else’s good news?”
Harry sighs. “We’ve never gone a week without talking. Ever.”
“Well you really hurt my feelings.” She turns to look at him, tears welling up in her eyes. “I mean, you don’t even trust me, so you listen in on my phone calls—”
“That’s not—no. I picked up when you did.”
“But you still listened.”
“Okay yeah, but only because I heard my name.” He shrugs, a timid smile playing on his lips. “Wanted to hear what you thought about me.”
“I tell you what I think all the time. I’ve never kept my feelings secret from you.”
“It’s different.” He pulls his hands from his pockets and runs them through his hair, tugging on fistfuls of curls out of frustration. “But then when Caroline said all that, ‘bout me not spending enough time with you, it killed me.”
“That’s what this is about,” she sighs, more to herself than to Harry as the memory of that morning resurfaces in her mind. “You dork, what about what I said back?”
“I hung up. Didn’t wanna hear anything else after that.”
“I told her how wrong she was. How we spend lots of time together.”
“You did?”
“Mhm. She’s always bragging about her and Tony, like they’re the first two people to date ever. I totally rubbed our relationship in her face.”
Harry’s surprised by the gleam on his girlfriend’s face, and tries not to laugh. “What else did you tell her?”
“I dunno.” She shrugs, suddenly shy. “Can’t remember.”
“How convenient.” He nudges her knee with his, and she bumps him back.
Y/n exhales, dipping her head back to squint at the stars peeking out from a cloudy night. “My parents are driving me crazy.”
“They always drive you crazy.”
“Yeah but, more than usual. I got spoiled staying with you on the weekends.”
Harry hums, reaching his arm over to pull her into his side. “Maybe it shouldn’t just be weekends…”
“They would know something’s up if I stayed over on weeknights.”
“No, baby, I mean permanently.”
“Like moving in together?”
“Why not?”
She chews on her lip, trying to keep her smile hidden. “I don’t know...that’s a big deal. It’s a big step.”
“We can think about it. No rush.”
“It would be nice. To see each other whenever we wanted.”
Harry tucks a strand of hair behind her ear. “Wouldn’t have to ask your parents permission for anything.”
“Yeah…”
“Just me.”
“Hey!”
“I’m kidding, angel.” He kisses her forehead and takes her hand, helping her up.
Y/n’s parents are in the living room when the two are back in the house, and just the thought of continuing her evening here lights a fire under y/n.
“I’m going over to Harry’s,” she announces.
Harry drops her hand, just as surprised as her parents.
“Excuse me?” Her father turns the t.v. off and straightens in his chair. “I don’t think so.”
“Well I think so,” y/n defends. “Come on, Harry.” She takes his hand and tugs him towards the door.
“Harry!” Her mother protests.
He looks over his shoulder just as he’s being led out the door. “Oh, you can call me Rayna.”

warnings: fluff
Aizawa Shouta
Tumblr media
-He loves being a dad.
-Unlike his students his son, Kaito, is a very very calm two year old.
-They take naps together in their matching sleeping bags, Shouta is the only one who can feed him his vegetables and they usually grade papers together.
-You are the one who looks after Kaito while Shouta is at work and once he gets home you go off to your agency.
-So basically Kaito spends half of his day with you and half with Aizawa.
-When you were called in that morning because of a villain attack, you had to leave Kaito with Aizawa.
- “I’m so sorry Shouta, Midnight was assigned on this mission with me and I don’t really trust Hizashi with a two year old.”
-He chuckled, taking a sleeping Kaito from your arms and giving you a kiss on each cheek and then on your forehead.
- “Don’t worry kitten, I’m sure he will be an angel.”
-In the teachers lounge, before class starts for the day, nearly half of the staff is cooing over the still sleeping toddler.
-They keep complimenting Shouta about how much they look alike and how cute he is.
-He just grumbles about how he wants them away from his son.
-He was saved from the bell, dashing to his class surprising all of his students with his sudden appearance.
-They hadn’t yet seen the baby in his arms until he stirred in his sleep, a few baby words tumbling from his mouth.
-Mina was ready to let out a really really high pitched squeal when Sero slapped her mouth shut.
- “Its sleeping!”
-Aizawa just let out a sigh and set his stuff on his desk.
-He went to start his lesson like usual but that apparently wasn’t an option.
-Sir you have a baby in your arms don’t expect us to stay silent and learn something useful.
-Kaito woke up a few minutes into the whisper shouting argument Shouta was having with 18 teenagers.
-He slowly blinked the sleep from his eyes, letting out a small yawn before looking around, his e/c eyes landing on all the new faces.
-Everyone was silent, expecting the toddler to start crying at the change of scenery and at the absence of his mother but surprisingly no.
-He rested his head on Shouta’s shoulder and shyly waved at the class.
-Since he was awake Mina could be a little more vocal.
-All the girls wanted to hold him, their main mission being to make him laugh.
-Some of the boys were asking Aizawa some questions  while others were entertaining the toddler.
-Kaito was really amazed by Shouto’s flames and he let out a heart warming laugh.
-Uraraka made things float around the baby while Kaminari made small sparks.
-Aizawa has never heard his baby boy laughing that much before.
-At home he’s quiet, laughing only when you tickle him or when Shouta’s stumble scratches his plush cheeks.
-Maybe taking him out more and letting the class hang out with him a little wouldn’t be so bad.
-The last person who approached the kid was Bakugou, who crouched down to his eye level and they just stared at each for a solid minute.
-Then Bakugou activated his quirk and the mini explosions made Kaito giggle and reach out to Katsuki.
-The rest of the day was spent fawning over Kaito, nothing changed even after three hours of toddler entertainment.
-When it was time to leave, the kids begged Aizawa to bring him again.
- “Maybe I’ll bring him to the dorms at some point. But don’t irritate me you brats because otherwise he’s staying home.”
Bonus:
“I heard that you, little man, were a heartthrob today!”
*baby babbling*
“Yeah he didn’t let me teach.”
“Like it bothered you.”
“I never said that”
Todoroki Shouto
Tumblr media
-You had to go on a mission abroad for a week and today the twins’ preschool had informed you that they wouldn’t open today.
-Frantically you called Shouto, proposing some solutions to your problem.
- “I’ll take them with me.”
-He wants to spend more time with his girls anyway.
-Both of them are very curious about their parents’ job and they have asked both of you to take them to work.
-This was their chance.
-You went to protest, knowing how stressing hero work could be and not wanting to stress your husband out more.
- “Love, I want them with me. I want to spend time with my snowflakes.”
-You couldn’t argue with that.
-He woke them up and helped them get dressed, leading them to the kitchen for breakfast while he simultaneously did their hair.
-The twins aren’t really morning types so they tend to be really quiet until noon.
-Telling them what they would be doing today, Shouto grabbed his things and stretched out both of his arms.
-When people at the agency saw the youngest Todoroki with two little girls clinging to his hands they were confused.
-They knew that he had a family, you two worked at the same agency after all, but they had never seen your kids.
-And let me tell you that 90% of your coworkers are now cooing at the three year olds.
-Shouto knew that his daughters didn’t really like crowds, even Rei who was the talkative one of the two would get shy and hide behind him when new people approached.
-Because of that he scooped both girls up and quickly made his way to his office.
-A few staff members greeting him and the girls but not many stopped him.
-Once inside he set them down and went straight to work.
-The girls are really quiet in general.
-They pulled two chairs on either side of their father and sat there, coloring and doodling or just staring at his reports.
-Surprisingly, Ren asked some questions while Rei stayed quiet.
-The crowd at the entrance must have exhausted her social battery.
-Pushing his chair back, he pulled both of them on his lap kissing their foreheads before going back to his reports making small comments here and there to keep them updated.
-Rei fell asleep after half an hour and it was the cutest sight.
-Ren followed soon after, the little white and red haired humans clinging to his shirt like a life line as they snoozed off.
-He took a picture and send it to you making you jealous beyond belief.
 I want cuddles too!!!  😣😣😣  Someone’s jealous.🥰🥰
-He leaned his head on one of them at some point and he too fell asleep.
-His secretary walked in to inform him of his father’s arrival and had heart eyes for the rest of the day.
-She took a picture and sent it to you, informing you that your husband was sleeping on the job.
-They were too cute though so she couldn’t bring herself to wake them up.
-But alas there’s no rest for the wicked so he woke up at some point.
-The rest of the day was spent with the three of them going to meetings, filing reports and training at the agency’s gym.
-Watching two mini Shoutos running around the gym pretending to train is top tier stuff.
Bonus
“Rei sweetheart don’t freeze your sister.”
“But she’s the bad guy!”
“Am not!” *flames flying*
“Ren don’t burn the place down.”
Shinsou Hitoshi
Tumblr media
-Kei is actually the one who wanted to go to the agency.
-She had asked both you and Shinsou to take her with you one day.
-She may be using it as an excuse to skip day care but you do you hun.
-It was her birthday and the little shit used that to her advantage.
- “Can I come with you to work? Pretty please?”
- “Kei...”
- “And it’s my birthday today.”
-You just level Shinsou with a glare.
- This is all you
-Shrugs.
-Now you have no choice but to take her with you and hope that everything goes smoothly.
-The main reason why you didn’t want to bring her with you was the looming possibility that someone could attack and your little girl would be in extra danger.
-Hitoshi reassured you that everything would be fine.
- “Her parents are two of the best heroes in the industry, she’ll be completely fine. I promise.”
-He woke her up the next morning, scooping her up and bringing her to the kitchen for breakfast.
-She was really clingy in the mornings and wouldn’t function correctly if one of you didn’t hug her until she fully woke up.
-Hitoshi is really soft for her during her birthday.
-He’s soft for her everyday but today he’s ten times softer.
-Gets her dressed and ready for the agency and is out the door in no time.
-Shinsou talks about his family a lot.
-He has like fifteen photos of you and Kei in his office and a bunch of her drawings tapped to the wall.
-He adores his family okay?
-So your coworkers aren’t so surprised when they see the small mess of violet hair resting in his arms.
-She too doesn’t like crowds but won’t cower away.
-She’ll put on a brave face and greet the strangers with acute politeness.
-As long as one of you is in a ten inch radius she’ll be fine.
-She answers all the questions that are being thrown her way.
-She even sat there and suffered through a handful of cheek pinching.
-Shinsou sees her suffering and scoops her up, excusing them and taking her to his office.
-You kissed her forehead and headed out to your own office, making her promise to visit you at some point because you too need some cuddles during work.
- “We’ll catch bad guys momma!!”
-She is a curious little girl, so for the next two hours or so she’ll be exploring every nook and cranny of Hitoshi’s office, opening drawers and cabinets, digging through case files and boxes.
-Then she might play with Hitoshi’s capture tool before visiting you for an hour or two.
-You love having her attention but you know she’s simply taking a break from her dad’s office.
-She’ll be back to Shinsou in no time.
-Daddy’s girl.....it iz what it iz.
-Around noon she starts to get tired.
-If she was in day care she would be taking her daily nap.
-Her exploring tired her way too much and that’s why she’s now snoozing off in one of the armchairs in Hitoshi’s office.
-He draped his jacket over her and let her sleep.
-Later on you two took her to a meeting, allowing her some insight in the hero industry.
-Plus she gets to hear the tea.
-For training she tags along with you, doing some laps and trying -and failing- to do some push ups.
-At the end of the day she was exhausted, sleeping soundly on Hitoshi’s shoulder as you made your way home.
Bonus
“I don’t want her to grow up.”
“Well we could always make another one.”
“Way to be subtle mister....”
“Let me smash...”

PART 2
The first days of Harry staying at your house were overshadowed by Maeve’s 5th grade spelling bee victory. The fake gold medal was a mainstay around her neck for a new nights at the dinner table until she eventually forgot about it.
Luckily enough, neither of your daughters seemed to be thrown too off kilter by his presence. Maeve was just young enough to not know much about who Harry was or the band he’d been in--though she was ready and willing to brag about having a celebrity around.
CeCe--in true sibling rivalry fashion--decided to draw her own medal with crayons and ask you to cut it out so she could wear it around the house. If Maeve gets one, so do I.
With potholders on and the oven door open, you apologized. “I can’t right now, honey--give mommy a few minutes and I’ll help you.”
Harry materialized at the bottom of the stairs, eyebrows raised when he said: “What do you need, CeCe?”
“I have to cut this out!” She said excitedly, running over to the drawer where the scissors were kept. She whipped them out and turned around quickly, Harry’s eyes bulging out of his head when he hurried over to grab them from her.
“I’ll cut, you watch,” he laughed, exchanging a look with you when CeCe climbed up to sit at the island. She hummed in agreement, handed over the paper and watched as he lined it up to start snipping.
“CeCe,” he said her name inquisitively. “Is CeCe short for anything?”
“Cecilia Rose L/N,” she smiled. “Pretty, right?”
“Very pretty,” he smiled. “Same last name as your mum.”
The last part of his sentence was a statement, a quick glance in your direction when you turned off the oven and shouted towards the stairs. “Maeve! Dinner’s ready!”
Your call went unanswered into the big house--you had no clue where she was or if she’d heard you. When Harry finished cutting out the paper medal, he handed it to CeCe who beamed with pride and put it around her neck.
Hands on your hips, “CeCe, will you please find your sister and tell her dinner is ready?”
She took one big breath and then screamed, “MAEVE!”
Both you and Harry flinched at the noise but laughed. She held onto Harry’s arm when she hopped down from the stool, shaking her head in disappointment. “Good god that girl,” she huffed, heading to climb the stairs when she yelled again: Maeve!!!! Dinner!!!!
“She’s a handful tonight,” you said, almost feeling guilty as her footsteps stomped on the floor overhead. “Thank you for that, though,” you said, motioning to the scissors in his hand. “Want a glass of wine?”
“S’not against the rules?” He teased.
When you shot him a look, he smirked and let out a laugh. “I’ll gladly take one. It’s fine, though. She was ready to stab someone flinging the scissors around like that.”
“They just had scissor safety in art class not too long ago.” You told him, pulling the cork from an already open bottle of red. “Sometimes I think she barely listens to anyone--she just does her own thing.”
“Not the worst way to be,” he smiled, picked up the glass when you slid it over on the granite. An awkward beat when he took a sip, smiled in your direction when you did the same. You could hear Maeve and CeCe fighting upstairs, offered him another guilty smile, but then he asked: “do you plan on changing your name?”
“My last name?”
“Yeah--L/N is your married name, right?”
It felt a bit nosy, a bit intrusive for the fourth night he was sleeping under your roof. You shrugged your shoulders casually, unsure how to answer. “Just haven’t gotten to it.”
He’d been quiet so far, out most of the day once the girls were gone for school and he’d return before dinner. Kept to himself--or at least out of the way--and was always helpful when he could be. Bringing groceries in? He carried a few. Needed a hand with clearing plates after dinner? He would gladly help.
Maeve and CeCe came rushing downstairs and were more willing to do the gratitude thing than they usually were, forks in hand when Maeve turned to you. “Oh, by the way, Auntie Shelli is taking us out for dinner tomorrow night.”
“She is?” You smiled at Maeve. “I haven’t heard about that.”
“She promised last week, she said Friday.”
“Okay, well I can check with her.”
“Are you doing anything tomorrow night?” Maeve asked.
“Not a thing,” you said, shaking your head. You’d been looking forward to it all week--maybe a bath and a glass of wine, maybe even a movie if you were feeling adventurous. Zoey was typically after you to do something: dinner, come hold Benny for an hour while she took a shower. You were totally up for helping a friend, but it’d been a minute since you had some me-time and if Jeff’s mom had already offered to babysit, you weren’t going to say no.
CeCe turned to Harry excitedly. “What are you doing tomorrow night? Are you coming to dinner?”
He smiled in her direction but shook his head. “I’m actually going over to a friend’s house.”
“What friend?”
“CeCe,” you laughed, embarrassed by her prying. “He doesn’t have to run everything by you, you know.”
“I know,” she said simply as she shrugged her shoulders innocently. “Just thought maybe it was one of my friends. I don’t know if we have the same friends.”
Harry laughed at this and smiled when you rolled your eyes. “I don’t think you know her.”
You watched Harry for a second, wondered if it was a girlfriend or something of the sort--Jeff hadn’t mentioned anything like that. Why couldn’t he stay there, with that friend?
“Well you should come with us and Auntie Shelli one day,” Maeve said. “We usually get ice cream and she lets us get a bunch of toppings and she doesn’t even care if we’ve had dinner yet.”
You let out a short laugh, the details of their time with family members always slipped out when you least expected it. “He’s busy, girls, remember?”
Harry shrugged, “we could get ice cream soon.”
You looked up at him, forked into a bite of dinner and said quietly: you don’t have to.
He didn’t--Harry didn’t owe you or your daughters anything except common decency and kindness. Helping you clean up after dinner or bring in the groceries was enough of a repayment for a guest room and his own bathroom.
“Maybe next week?” He ignored your comment and smiled at the girls.
“Next week!” CeCe chirped back, brushing her hair out of her face with a grin.
You figured they’d forget--swept up by the excitement of something else by the time next week rolled around and Harry would be off the hook. You smiled in his direction, apologetically and pleading, but it wasn’t until the next night that you realized he was serious.
Jeff’s mom had picked Maeve and CeCe up, you had just poured a glass of wine and went to sit in your office to go over any unread emails when he knocked on the door.
“Hey,” he offered a smile, leaned against the wall and put his hands in his pockets.
“Hi,” you turned to see him, unsure what he wanted or why he was popping in. “What’s up?”
“Uh, just wanted to let you know that my plans fell through--so, I’m just gonna be home--here I mean.”
His correction was quick, a subtle misstep through words.
You pressed your lips into a thin line, nodded slowly as you took in the information. He’d be here--in your house and just hanging out. While you had planned for a quiet night, having one other person somewhere in the house wouldn’t kill you, right? Maybe he’d lock himself away in his room and leave you to your emails, then you’d slip upstairs and end the night with a bath before your children returned with a sugar high and stories for days.
“Okay,” you said. A pause when he nodded, looked at you and then down to the floor.
“Do you want to have a drink?”
“I’ve got one,” you lifted your glass and then faltered. “Oh, together--sure, yeah.”
He held back a laugh, motioned for you to lead the way once you stood up from your desk. He trailed you back through the living room and into the kitchen, got himself a wine glass when you found the bottle you’d already started on the counter.
Was this weird? You couldn’t tell. The house was quiet and for a moment it felt like neither of you knew what to say when the only sound was the cork coming out of the bottle.
“I can venmo you for groceries, too, since m’drinking your wine.” He lifted it and poured, you watched the liquid rise in the glass until he looked up at you, waiting for a reply.
“No, it’s fine.”
“M’eating your food, drinking your wine, sleeping in your house,” he let out a laugh but put the stopper back in. “I feel like I could at least pay you back for some--” he looked down at the bottle and studied the label, “cabernet.”
You pulled out a barstool and sat, a sigh when you waved him off. “S’fine--I’m still making my way through the sorry your dad died and sorry your husband left you bottles.”
His lips pulled up at the side when yours did too. “Where do they make those grapes?”
“Somewhere far away from here,” you nodded, a long sip from your own glass when he moved to sit beside you.
“So how much did Jeff have to beg you to let me stay here?”
You looked over at him, hesitant to admit your own reluctance. You knew he and Jeff were close--you’d long been hearing stories about their nights out or big wins as a team. You’d even been invited to the release party for Harry’s first solo album, but you couldn’t find a babysitter and back then your ex couldn’t be bothered.
“I got a few pleading text messages after he first brought it up,” you smiled.
He laughed and nodded. “Well, it’s a big help. My house is over in Malibu but s’not ready yet--the only guestroom in Jeff’s house shares a wall with the master and something about that felt...weird.”
You narrowed your eyes at him playfully. “You didn’t want to hear Jeff and random women hooking up?”
“Not in the slightest,” he shook his head and bit back a smile. “Figured I’d stay with his parents for a bit but then Irv and Shelli told me they loved me but their rules are strict: their children, grandchildren, and your children. Those are their only guests.”
You nodded, it wasn’t news to you. “One time my dad stayed over after a party and Irv almost hit him with a golf club in the morning because he’d forgotten who was on the couch.”
“Yeah, so, sounds like a good idea that I’m here.” Quiet again when he moved the glass around, then he said: “you know, I would be happy to take them to ice cream or something one night--give you a minute to yourself.”
You smiled, the offer was sweet and apparently he had no idea that he’d just ruined your one chance this week to have that. “You really don’t have to--I’m sorry that they’re so...fascinated by you.”
“No, they’re great, very sweet. Maybe I can tag along when Jeff watches them next and learn the ropes.”
You nodded, reassured by his understanding that watching them would take skill. “There’s a lot to learn, they can be quite the handful sometimes.”
“Yeah?” he tilted his head. “Tell me more about them.”
The way he looked at you stirred a feeling in your chest that you couldn’t quite place. Maybe it was just the fact that he seemed interested enough to ask about them, he already seemed more invested than their father had been over the last year. You also would never turn down an opportunity to humble-brag about the tiny humans you'd created.
“Well, Maeve is pretty straight-edge. She’s always cared a lot about school and she likes it--which is weird, cause she didn’t get that from me and she definitely didn’t get it from my ex-husband. Like, she actually gets excited to come home and do her homework.”
He laughed, sipped from his glass and said: “Right, I’m sure she didn’t get her drive and determination from her mother who started her own successful business.”
You brushed off the compliment with a roll of your eyes and a laugh. “The weird preteen-angst thing is new, though. I have no idea if that’s because of losing my dad or losing hers,” you picked at a thread on your sleeve.
He was quiet for a moment, like he didn’t know what to say to that.
“And CeCe,” you saved him the trouble, “she’s a fireball. She is so strong-willed it actually makes me nervous about when she’s a teenager. She might actually drive to Vegas and get married or something. It’s just her world and we’re living in it.”
His dimples appeared on his cheeks when you shrugged. “Well, you’ve clearly done something right with them. Jeff's always loved being an uncle."
“I appreciate that,” you said honestly, a pause before you admitted: “My ex was never that hands on.”
“Right,” he nodded. “Is that why things ended?”
You let out a short laugh, again unsure if you were sharing too much. Would you wake up and regret the fact that you'd poured a glass of wine, and apparently your deepest secrets, all out on display?
“That, along with the fact that he was cheating on me for a good 18 months, I think.”
“Wow,” he nodded slowly, his lips pushed out in thought when he dropped your gaze. “What a dick.”
“Yeah, better I found out now than later on, I guess.”
“So that and losing your dad this year--”
“Yeah it’s been shitty,” you cut him off, another sip of your wine to avoid having to say more. He looked at your glass, now nearing empty, and reached for the bottle.
“Then you definitely deserve another one of these,” he laughed, fingers pulling the cork out again. “No wonder you got so many sympathy wine bottles.”
He poured himself another too, eventually he followed you into your dad’s old office when he asked what hid behind the mystery door on the first floor.
It was the only room you hadn’t redone yet, something about keeping his records on the book shelves and his papers on the desk felt like it kept him here. He’d chosen the green for the walls and you apologized when Harry’s eyebrows shot up at the sight.
“Great man,” you nodded, turning on a light switch, “terrible decorating taste.”
Harry nodded slowly, wine glass still in hand and a smirk fighting it’s way onto his face. “S’a bright color, yeah.”
He let out a laugh when he made eye contact with you, a disapproving look on your face when you walked over to the desk. “All these strewn about--probably some important information about you over here somewhere.”
He came over and lifted a paper. “Harry Styles is one of the most thoughtful, caring, and funny people I know.”
“Really?” You tugged at his arm to get a better view of the paper. Your dad’s handwriting was almost illegible, a date scribbled on top and another few words halfway down the small notebook page, nothing about Harry and nothing that seemed all that important.
“I hope that’s what he thought of me,” Harry smiled, his eyes flickered to where you still had a grip around his wrist. “Your nails are digging into me.”
“Sorry,” you pulled back immediately. “Sometimes I have to grab CeCe like that in the store or she runs off.”
He kept your gaze for a second, but it felt uncomfortable and made you nervous, so you cleared your throat. “Feel free to come in here and use this stuff,” you motioned over to the piano and the guitars he had in stands. “No one uses it, so--it’d be good for it to get played.”
“You don’t play anything?”
You shook your head. “No--he’d started to teach me guitar when I was young but then my mom died, just never picked it up again.”
You were thirteen when it happened, a car accident on the 405 and you didn’t go to school for weeks. Your dad had always been your main support--they divorced when you were ten--but after that you grew even closer, which is why losing him was so hard. He’d been a friend and a parent and the best grandfather who helped pick up the pieces when things with Luke started to crumble.
Harry was quiet, a simple nod when he went over to the piano and sat. You felt the need to shift the topic of conversation to something less depressing than the unfortunate events of your life.
“Are you writing a lot for the album still?”
“Yeah--we’ve got a few things written that might end up on it, but, mostly just experimenting with some new sounds.”
He pressed a chord down on the piano and looked up at you. “How do Maeve and CeCe seem to be handling it all?”
“Which part?”
“Both.”
You shrugged. “They’ve asked a lot about where their father is and why he hasn’t visited. And they understand that their grandpa is gone, but they’re sad, I think. CeCe’s had more nightmares than usual.”
He smiled a little. “And how are you doing with all of it?”
You let out a tiny laugh, mostly out of discomfort with the sudden seriousness in his voice and the way he already pulled more out of you than you’d planned. “I’m fine.”
He lifted his brows but played another progression of chords. “Wouldn’t blame you if you’re not.”
You took a sip of the cabernet and watched as he hummed along to whatever he played. When he looked up at you and waited for a reply, you smiled. “Some days I want to pull my hair out and others I need a good glass of wine. I kind of oscillate between those two lately.”
“Well, I’m always happy to split a bottle with you.”
You nodded, tried to fight the smile on your face when he laughed but then gave in. “Good.”
**
You woke up the next morning with a bit of a headache from the third and unexpected glass of wine. The girls were home by 9pm and unfortunately for you, the weekend was busy with play dates and birthday parties and grocery shopping.
Monday had you back in the office and recounting the first week to Tristan over an iced latte and a breakfast sandwich you’d grabbed after school drop off. Now it was cold and you were approaching the mid-day slump you were all too familiar with.
“I just can’t believe you’re alive still, to be honest. You know--seeing as you thought he’d be a serial killer or something.”
You looked over at him with narrowed eyes. “I didn’t think he was a serial killer.”
“Just a pedophile?”
“Alright,” you waved him off. “I can admit that it’s been fine--good, even. It’s only been a week, though.”
“Right,” he shrugged. “Halfway there. Maybe week two is when he goes crazy.”
You ignored the teasing from your friend and looked back to your computer. “Do you know if Kailee ordered the new bottles for the matcha face mask?”
“Yesterday afternoon,” he nodded. “And we also got the labels in for them as well. They ship off to the packaging plant on Tuesday.”
“Good, and numbers are up from last quarter which is really good. The meeting with the investors should go well.”
“Yeah, I mean, our entire profit has doubled since this time last year,” he smiled in your direction, a subtle reminder that the late night emails on top of the worst year ever had already proven to be worth it. “You should be very proud.”
“I am,” you admitted. “Of us. All of us.”
“Yes, what kind of boss would you be if you took all of the credit?” He teased.
“A bad one, but I’m also the type of boss that leaves at lunch time to go home and change since I have a meeting this afternoon that I forgot all about.”
He looked you up and down when you stood.
“It’s with people from Anthropologie about carrying some of our products in store--so I don’t think I can wear athleisure.”
He laughed and kept typing. “Fair enough. See you at 2pm, though, for the website meeting?”
“Yes,” you promised as you grabbed your keys. “Please don’t let the place burn down while I’m gone.”
“Might throw the match myself,” he waved you off, a laugh at his own joke when you headed for the elevator.
You were proud of the company you’d built and the office you’d been able to purchase two years back, but you were more proud of the energy that buzzed through the halls and the people who made work feel less like work and more like the adventure of a lifetime. You tried to be the cool boss who brought enough coffee for everyone, gave good time off but still expected hard work and drive to be the core of the business.
It took a while to settle into the role, though. At first you were sure you’d be seen as a spoiled rich kid who got a loan from her father to start a company--but it only took one year to repay him when you started getting placements in health food markets across LA. When Kourtney Kardashian posted something about your raspberry toner, the rest was history.
You’d always been passionate about making people feel good about themselves and focused your entire brand on building people up, not tearing them down. The world had enough of that as a mother of two daughters, you hoped it’d be something that would change that narrative, at least for them.
The drive home was quick and the sun was shining, which put a pep in your step as you hopped out of the car in the driveway and headed for the side door.
Harry’s car was still here--you’d left earlier than usual but didn’t expect him to be home. If anything, you figured he’d left shortly after you and planned on staying late in the studio. Jeff had mentioned something about laying down new tracks.
“Hello?” You called into the kitchen and looked around, he wasn’t in the living room or out by the pool. You found a laundry basket at the top of the second floor and figured that maybe someone had picked him up, but the sound of muffled singing pulled you down the hall and closer to his guest room.
The door was cracked only a bit, the sun streamed in from the windows and you could hear the running water of the shower. It was wrong, maybe, but you pushed the door open and stepped inside, smiled to yourself at the fact that he was singing a Carole King song that your dad used to play on repeat when you were a kid.
The room was clean--you hadn’t been in it since you’d pointed out the linen closet in the bathroom and showed him how to use the TV remote. His bed was made--maybe not the way you would have made it but the throw pillows were arranged in a way that showed he tried.
A buzzing on the dresser pulled your attention away from the bed. His phone, a message from someone named Bria Whitmore. Another message, then a third. You took a step closer--who on earth was texting him this much without a reply? A girlfriend? Someone he probably slept with or something of the sort.
“Hi,” his voice pulled your head around quickly and sent your heartbeat through the roof.
“Jesus, hi--sorry--I was just--”
He was in a towel, the fabric wrapped loosely around his waist and hair was slicked back from the water. You looked away from the tattoos that littered his skin and looked down at the laundry basket.
“I was just seeing if you had any laundry you needed me to do?”
It was clean, but he didn’t need to know that.
“M’good,” he smiled like he didn’t believe you. “Why are you home?”
“Had to change--forgot about a meeting,” you let out a laugh and tried to slow your pulse. “Figured the pilates mom look wasn’t the right vibe.”
He nodded, moved around you in the center of the room to pull out a t-shirt from a drawer. You saw him look down at the cell phone you’d been eyeing.
“Your phone went off,” you admitted, the laundry basket still pressed up against your hip.
“Yeah?” He smirked over his shoulder.
“I was just making sure it wasn’t an emergency--I wasn’t, like, snooping.”
A dimple appeared on his left cheek again, he tugged the fabric over his head and then shook out his hair.
“S’not an emergency,” he said. “Just a friend.”
You didn’t know if that was code. Were twenty-somethings calling their booty-calls friends now? You figured you’d ask Tristan later.
“Why are you home?” You tossed the question back at him.
“Schedule changed--went for a run after breakfast and now just, showering, y’know,” he looked down at the towel that separated you from an even more awkward moment.
“Right, sorry, I...am leaving,” you pointed to the door. “Changing, back to the office, home tonight.”
“Sounds good,” he smiled. “Figured I could make dinner, if you wanted. I make a mean chicken taco.”
You took a few steps backwards to the door. “You cook?”
“I do,” he smiled. “Hard to believe?”
“No,” you shook your head. “That would be great--if you want, but you don’t have to.”
“I’d love to,” he nodded. “I’ll see you tonight, Y/N.”
“With more clothes,” you smiled, immediately regretting the bad joke and the attention it drew to the stuffy air and the butterflies in your stomach.
“Definitely more clothes.”
You made a face at yourself once the door was shut, idiot. At least you hadn’t accidentally seen a picture of someone’s boobs. You were sure he got plenty of those.
You pushed the thought out of your head and thankfully Harry didn’t smirk at you too much when Jeff came to pick up the girls for ice cream the next afternoon. They hadn’t forgotten, but luckily Jeff had offered to take them out one night and it seemed like the perfect opportunity for Harry to tag along. That way he could stay true to his word and the girls would stop pestering him every time he popped down to the kitchen.
Zoey had been begging to bring the baby over to get out of the house, and now she was sitting in the other room with Benny on a play mat on the floor. Maeve, CeCe, Jeff and Harry stood in a line, eagerly awaiting the green light to pile into Jeff’s car.
“Okay, so Uncle Jeff can text me if you need anything, see you around 7pm?”
“Yes ma’am,” Jeff said, a salute in your direction that pulled a giggle from both of your daughters.
They’d been fighting more lately, CeCe tried to take the medal from Maeve’s room one night over the weekend and suddenly it was like world war three. You were shocked that they’d gotten it together enough to spend some time in each other's presence, even with Uncle Jeff chaperoning, but you were eager for the quiet and hopeful the screaming matches wouldn’t return once the ice cream and dinner date was finished.
“Love you, be nice to each other, okay?” You leaned down and used both hands to hold CeCe’s head in place when you planted a kiss on her forehead, then Maeve. A hug for Jeff, “only one ice cream cone this time.”
He laughed but obliged, you moved down the line to Harry, an awkward nod in his direction when you realized that whatever type of acquaintanceship had slowly started to bloom between the two of you was hardly grounds for a kiss on the forehead or even a hug.
He apparently sensed this too, a playful smile on his face when he lifted his brows. “No farewell for me?”
Jeff let out a quick laugh but Maeve and CeCe took off for the car, racing to see who could get out the front door fastest. “Alright, don’t kill each other,” you reminded again, waved them all off with an embarrassed smirk and then watched as Harry helped CeCe buckle into her booster seat.
“So,” Zoey appeared beside you, Benny in her arms as she looked out the window. “Seems like things are going well.”
“Yeah,” you shrugged casually. “He’s been nice.”
“He seems friendly,” she wiggled her brows when she met your gaze. “Flirty friendly.”
“Just friendly,” you laughed and headed for the kitchen to pour yourself a drink. It might have only been Tuesday, but the week promised to be a busy one. You wiped up a runaway drip of wine on the rim, fully aware the words about to leave your mouth would push Zoey into gear. “But I did see him shirtless yesterday.”
“That sounds amazing,” she shifted Benny in her arms, eagerness in her voice. “How was it?”
“I mean--he also caught me snooping in his room, sort of.”
“Sort of?”
You tried to downplay it. “I came home from work in the middle of the day to change and I heard him in the shower--which is weird cause I didn’t think he’d be home.”
“So you went in there?”
“Not the bathroom--I just peeked into his room and noticed it was really clean. Which is weird, right? He’s a kid!”
“He’s not a kid,” she rolled her eyes at you. “Your kids are kids. He’s twenty-four. I looked it up.”
Your eyes were wide when you turned to head for the couch. “You looked it up?”
“I was curious! He’s a celebrity living in your house and he’s very attractive and you have been harping on his age.”
“Because it felt weird at first.”
“And it doesn’t now?” Her tone was hopeful when she laid Benny back on his play mat and kneeled beside him.
You took a gulp from your wine glass. “Less weird, but only because he’s mature. He’s helpful around the house--he cooked dinner the other night--and he’s good with the girls.”
The corner of her mouth pulled towards the ceiling, arched eyebrows when she clarified. “He’s good with the girls?”
“He’s just nice to them--I was worried that they’d annoy him. I mean, I doubt that he was excited to hear that two of his roommates were six and ten.”
“Okay--but why did you see him shirtless?”
Right--she’d gotten you off track. “Because...I went in his room and then saw his phone buzzing and then he came out and caught me looking at his phone.”
“You were looking through his phone?!”
“No! Not the actual texts, just to see who was blowing it up. I only looked at the lock screen.”
“Was he annoyed?”
“No,” you shrugged, shame laced through your voice. “He was casual. But then he put his shirt on and I left him alone and went back to work.”
“So there’s sexual tension,” she shimmied her shoulders and pulled a laugh from you, she nuzzled down into Benny’s face but then gave him a pacifier.
“No.”
This brought her gaze back to you, more serious now. “Y/N, you are not a creep if you admit that you find him attractive.”
“I can admit that he’s handsome,” you chose a new word that felt more detached. “But who cares? He’s literally just a house guest. A friend of a friend.”
“Right, but he was just flirting with you like there’s no tomorrow.”
“No he wasn’t,” you denied her accusation. When she stared at you expectantly, you took a loud sip and let the obnoxious noise ring through the now empty house as if it would preclude you from saying any more.
“You truly, seriously, one-hundred percent haven’t noticed any type of flirting?”
You averted your eyes for a second, ready to dismiss her question and tell her she was crazy. There was nothing going on between the two of you.
But then you thought on it, thought about the way he asked about Maeve and CeCe and remembered the way your stomach seemed to twist itself in knots when he smirked at you and when the dimples appeared on his cheeks.
“The look on your face is enough of an answer,” Zoey teased, bouncing side to side when Benny made a noise. “Isn’t that right, Benny Boo? Someone has a crush.”
“There’s no crush here--he’s just,” a shrug of your shoulders when you didn’t know what words to use. You didn’t want to add fuel to her fire and you certainly didn’t want to give her any more of a reason to keep bringing this topic up.
“Dreamy? Beautiful? The perfect rebound post-divorce?”
A flutter of your eyelids in annoyance when you stood to head for the kitchen. “No,” you said, making a face in her direction. “He’s just cute.”
“So cute!” She followed behind and egged you on. “A crush is perfectly harmless, a little bedtime rendezvous is totally not a big deal.”
“I think we’re getting ahead of ourselves, here, okay?”
“Oh come on,” she laughed. “You mean to tell me you haven’t already thought about if he’s good in bed?”
She came to sit next to you at the island, folding her legs beneath her. When you sipped at your wine and tried to hide a smirk, her face lit up. “I knew it, I knew it! I don’t blame you, at all, by the way. He’s gorgeous.”
“I’m just horny, number one,” you admitted, leaning forward to rest your elbow on the granite counter. “And seeing a man actually be good with kids is a breath of fresh air.”
“Yeah, Luke didn’t set the bar high with that one.”
“Absolutely not.”
A pause of silence when evening air blew through the open doors to the patio. There was music audible through the trees, wafting in from the backyard of your neighbors.
“I think you should fuck him.”
“What?!” You turned towards her quickly, your voice quieter when she smirked and looked over at you. “Are you out of your mind?”
“You have a ridiculously attractive man living in your house and he hangs out with your kids and now he’s starting to cook? It’s like a lifetime movie waiting to happen.”
“That doesn’t mean I should have sex with him!”
“Do you want to have sex with him?”
You were quiet for a second, kept her gaze but then rolled your eyes and shook your head. “I’ve had a bad year,” you made an excuse for the pulsing in your veins whenever you were alone with him. Nothing more, nothing less.
“When does he leave again?”
“I don’t know--at the end of the week, I guess. It’s not happening, so don’t get any ideas.”
“Alright,” she seemed to relent, “You do you. I just think you deserve a little feel good time.”
“That sounds gross,” you wrinkled your nose, pulling a laugh out of her.
She was able to change the topic, told you all about the way Benny was getting better at lifting his own head and he was screaming a lot less when she put him down for some tummy time. Your phone dinged, though, signalling a new text just when you were about to pull out leftovers and heat them up.
She watched when you opened it, got excited when you smirked at the screen.
“Who is it?”
You almost didn’t want to show her, but you knew she’d pry it out of your hands with force if you didn’t share. You flipped it around, watched as a smile spread across her face.
A picture of Harry and CeCe, both with sunglasses on as they ate their ice cream. Maeve and Jeff were in the background, the line at the ice cream shop down the street wasn’t too long. You were kind of surprised he was willing to go with them, wouldn't it create a buzz in the headlines?
Zoey gave you a knowing look.
“It’s just sweet.”
“Are you sure?”
“I don’t know,” you smiled a little at first, but the happiness faded from your face when you pulled yourself back to reality. “I feel stupid thinking that he’s flirting with me. He could be with a supermodel if he wanted to. One with perky boobs and who’s, like, twenty. Not someone who’s old enough to be his mom.”
“You are seven years older than him,” she made a disgusted face. “You could have been, like, his babysitter, not his mom.”
“Oh, that makes me feel so much better.”
“You’re being stupid about this!”
You paused with tupperware in your hands, turned around slowly. “I am not being dumb about not having casual sex with the popstar boyband kid living under my roof. I think not having sex with him is objectively the responsible thing to do here.”
“Why do you always have to be so responsible, though? You have been doing that forever, okay? You’re the business owner mom who’s always been incredibly family-oriented.”
“Is that a bad thing?”
“No, not in the slightest! But you’re more than just a mom.”
You bit at your cheek and dropped her gaze, put the tupperware down from exhaustion. “I just want my children to have a normal life. I only had one parent and I thought they were going to have two and now that ship has sailed.”
She nodded sympathetically. “But that doesn’t mean you did anything wrong! You never relaxing and having a good time will only teach them bad work-life balance.”
You rolled your eyes at her comment, tried to fight the smile when she waited for you to fold. “I love you,” she said. “I want you to get laid or have a drink or let your hair down once in a while.”
You held up the wine in her face. “Already halfway there.”
She reached for the bottle of wine and shoved it towards you with skeptical eyes. “Try harder.”
You let out a laugh and took another sip once it was refilled, pushed plates into the microwave and sat there with her until Jeff’s car pulled back into the driveway and the girls came tumbling back into the house.
“Mom, Harry said he could teach me how to play guitar,” Maeve grinned up at you, an affectionate hug caught you by surprise, but so did her words.
“He did, did he?” You eyed Harry as he walked in with Jeff by his side, sunglasses still on his face despite the sun lingering just above the horizon.
“We’ll start a band,” Harry nodded in her direction, kept his eyes shielded as CeCe ran into the backyard with a noise of excitement.
“And Uncle Jeff said he’ll sing.”
“You’ll definitely get far, then,” you teased, pulling an offended look from your childhood friend. “He’s obviously the best singer in the house.”
Harry nodded in playful agreement. “Could put me out of a job any day.”
“Maeve!” CeCe called suddenly, pulling everyone’s attention to the backyard. “Come play squishball!”
Harry looked down at Maeve and she looked up at him, you were unaware of whatever unspoken communication was transpiring between them. “Should we?” He asked.
“Definitely,” she giggled, hands on her hips.
Zoey was also confused, but she watched as Maeve and Harry headed for the patio. Harry finally took his sunglasses off, handed them to your older daughter before he spoke. “CeCe, we need to have a meeting.”
“A meeting?” She asked, she groaned in disappointment but walked back towards the house, bat dragging on the grass behind her. Jeff laughed and folded his arms over his chest, unaware of whatever deal had already been struck between them.
“You two are both really great at squishball,” Harry admitted, his voice suddenly more serious than before. “But I think we need to up the stakes.”
“Up the stakes?” You could tell by the look on CeCe’s face that she had no clue what that meant.
“Winner of this game gets the medal I won from the spelling bee,” Maeve explained.
You were about to protest, head outside and discourage any type of betting or gambling or whatever the backyard made up game was leading towards, but Harry went on to explain the rules. “CeCe gets a head start running bases, just because of her tiny legs.”
Maeve nodded, “and she gets a free home run to start off.”
CeCe smiled wide and put her hands on her hips, pulling a laugh from Harry as she copied her older sister. “I like the sound of that,” she said. A sure-fire way to make her win, you realized. But what was in that for Maeve? How had your previously grumpy pre-teen become a team player in a matter of hours?
It wasn’t long before Zoey gathered up her things and put Benny in the backseat, giggling and excited yells floated in from the backyard when you hugged her goodbye. Jeff stayed past sunset and offered an excited high five when CeCe won, completely unaware at how easy they’d made it for her.
But he soon left, too, you climbed the stairs behind your two little athletes, got them washed up and in bed before it was 9pm--not bad for a weeknight. You were sure Harry would have retreated to his room, too, but he was sat by the fire pit on the patio, a near empty glass of wine in his hand when you came back out.
“Care to explain?” you leaned against the doorframe and smiled. He adjusted in his seat but shrugged his shoulders when you admitted: “I never thought I would hear the end of it with that stupid medal.”
There was a confident look on his face when he met your eyes in the glow of the fire pit. “Figured I can teach her a few chords on guitar and that would take her mind off of taunting CeCe.”
It was smart, you nodded slowly and watched him. Give Maeve something that would get her really excited, but only if she’d give up something else. Bargaining--a classic parenting trick. You eyed Harry with a level of skepticism.
“How are you so good with them?”
He smiled at that, apparently flattered by the compliment. “They’re good kids,” he said simply.
“I’m aware,” you laughed, “but you don’t have to spend so much time with them.”
“I like it,” he shrugged. “It’s kind of nice to be around a family, you know?”
The words pulled emotion to your chest. Did you really look like a family to him? No husband, no grandfather, two irreplaceable roles and now you were trying to fill all of them just to keep your kids afloat.
“And besides,” he stood from his chair and grabbed the now empty glass before he came closer to you. “Something about being here just feels right.”
You looked up at him, felt the same rush of heat to your cheeks but hoped you were safe in the cover of night. He smirked, like he knew what he was doing to you but was too much of a gentleman to call you out. Hesitation when you felt some type of magnetic force between you, the distance simultaneously felt like inches and miles.
You smiled softly, embarrassed by the way your pulse picked up and the thoughts that flew through your head. What would happen if I, does he ever think about, am I crazy if I want to?
He brushed past you and walked to the sink, placing the wine glass down quietly before he turned to face you once more. “Is it as bad as you thought?”
Confusion, you wiped your sweaty palms on your pants. “Sorry?”
“Having me here,” he motioned around, the dimple on his left cheek was visible even in the dim light. You rolled your eyes, dropped his gaze for a second when he let out a quiet laugh. “I hope that it’s only as miserable as you thought--m’just aiming for not worse than expected at this point.”
You turned to face him and put your hands on the granite, thankful for the fact that the island was now between you, the ticking of a clock on the wall kept time when you tried to piece your words together carefully.
Was he flirting with you? A similar to question to that he'd asked only a few nights earlier, this time with more of a smirk on his face and a lilt in his voice that made sent a shiver down your spine.
“It’s better,” you admitted with a nod and a teasing smile. “But don’t tell Jeff that.”
He crossed his arms over his chest, held your gaze and then nodded. “Your secret’s safe with me.”
There was silence for a second, you almost offered to pour him another glass of wine but then he said: “Only a few more days, though.”
“Yeah,” you nodded, the fantasy shattered on the floor between you. “How’s the house coming?”
He winced, a quiet laugh when he shook his head. “Everything’s been pushed out a few weeks, actually. But--it’s fine, I’m probably just going to stay with a friend or something, you know, don’t want to overstay my welcome.”
You brought your lips into a thin line, unsure if what you were about to offer was appropriate or weird or just plain awkward.
“Oh...well, I mean, if you want to stay here longer, you can.”
His mouth pulled up on the side, he brought his gaze back to you and shifted his weight on his feet. “Yeah? You don’t mind?”
You shrugged, again hoping to play it cool or not come off too eager. “If that would be helpful,” you trailed off.
“Yeah, very helpful.”
“Cool.”
“Cool,” he nodded, pulling another smirk from you.
A few more weeks, tops.
