thanks for your pov! some of those things he didn't do, but I understand why you hold him at fault for them. I think it's interesting that you think he has no love or affection for anyone and always cares about his goals. wouldn't it have been smarter & more cunning & ruthless to just let nhs run the nie into the ground instead of helping them? and to kill qin su earlier, even when rusong was little or before he was born? plus, why be so kind to lan xichen, for most of their lives? and why not kill da-ge in nightless city and blame it on wrh, instead of letting nmj free and then having to dodge his attempts to kill jgy over the xue yang incident? these are some things that make it hard for me to say he does everything out of pure ruthlessness.
All that makes a lot of sense!
Again, my takes are very new, as I just finished the second book literally yesterday. And from all that I read, nothing was pointing in that direction, for me. If the narrative voice is to be believed, Jin Guangyao's actions were all very calculated. Again, if I had the opportunity right now, I could cite them from the book (thank you for this discussion, I am liking the trading of povs!)
I could be wrong! I haven't sat down to think about all of it yet!
When watching the show, I actually found him much more empathetic and believed he actually cared a lot. It was only as I read the book that I was like "Wow, from this perspective, he literally discarded everyone like they were nothing."
Also, I don't get why I'm being told by people that I'm "classist" for saying he wasn't a good person, and that Nie Mingjue deserved to die? Have I completely misinterpreted everything that happened? Countless times, the book mentioned how highly Nie Mingjue thought of Jin Guangyao.
When it comes to your question, it is my personal belief (again, I could be wrong, this all fomes from me finsihing the second book) that Jin Guangyao didn't do things differently, simply because they weren't convenient at the time.
He went undercover in order to gain enough acclaim to be recognized by the Jin Clan, but killing Nie Mingjue at the time was too risky, and what would he gain from that? However, he killed his own father, and Jin Zixuan, and cursed his cousin, so once Nie Mingjue became a problem, how hard would it be for him to get rid of the sect leader? Nie Mingjue became a problem, as I saw it, once he kept pestering JGY about Xue Yang: and we all knownwhat JGY had Xue Yang around for.
Lan Xichen always took his side, so why wouldn't Jin Guangyao be kind to him? The book also said that he went to Lan Xichen with his troubles, but referred to his action as "...trying to sow discord between them (LXC and NMJ)" so idk what to think.
If he is to be believed, Jin Guagyao said "at the beginning, his heart was true" when talking to Qin Su after she found out, but he also said "You must know, A-Song always had to die," so if he was willing to kill his own son, how likely was it that Qin Su would be any different?
As for helping Nie Huaisang with the clan, I have yet to form an opinion about that. Too many things could be considered in that particular equation.

help i can't stop thinking about Jiggy doing the time warp, what would he even DO if he woke up in the past???? I doubt he'd get himself kicked out of the Unclean Realm. Does he kill JGS earlier in the timeline and accidentaly save WWX that way? He definitely doesn't knock up his sister this time around but like...other than that, what does he DO?
I think there are three things he might try to do, possibly in a contradictory way:
1) make everyone love him
2) take over the world in a way that is less likely to get him publicly denounced. Definitely no sister fucking which means he doesn’t have a son to kill! On the other hand a workable Jiggy heir might not be great for Jin Ling’s health.
3) murder everyone who’s ever called his mom a whore, Wei Wuxian for going “Oooooooh look who’s SENSITIVE about his MOM,” after Jiang Cheng calls his mom a whore, and Huaisang for dethroning him and taking Xichen away. So that’s just a very long kill list. Possibly he decides that option 3 jeopardizes 1 and 2 more than he’d like or gets distracted by how good Mingjue thinking he’s great feels, but he does murder a fair few people for the crimes of hurting his feelings and disrespecting his mom, and by the time we finish the show a significant chunk of the cast has done both things.
But on the other hand he’s done trying to impress his dad so he has less impetus to do horrible things for that trashbag! Maybe he kills him less flamboyantly this time and decides to make Zixuan love him instead.

In praise of MDZS and The Untamed,
I get so caught up in plot driven vs. character driven stories that honestly MDZS has rocked my world completely, so here's my 2 cents
Typically ppl either write stories where the plot drives the characters or ones where the characters drive the plot. Hardly, if ever, do you see the relationships between those characters being the main driving force in a story! At least I feel like I haven't seen that done as successfully as in MDZS.
In MDZS you're hooked because you know the relationships between these people is going to change, drastically, at some point. It spoils the plot to you upfront because how things turn out isn't important.
What's important is how the characters feel about each other, every small change in their relationships informs both the way the plot progresses and their level of involvement in it. It's both a very captivating and organic way of telling a story!!
I just... I can't... This story is so good!
Like idk if I even cared about their individual motivations. In the end, what mattered was the relationships they had with each other. Like sure Xue Yang murdered a BUNCH of people but it wasn't affecting him nor the plot until Xiao X showed up. Lan Xichen didn't owe anything to Jin Guagyao. He wasn't there to exchange philosophies about life, he wasn't saying I'm right you're wrong, he wasn't even there to stop him really, he just wanted to be there because JG is someone that mattered to him.
God this novel... I haven't even completely unpacked it yet. It's so good. I want to send MXTX expensive chocolate or something for their hard work...

I love the idea of xue yang never being into romance, but then there’s yi city and xiao xingchen and he starts doing all this romantic shit with him as a joke and slowly, little by little, it stops being a joke and just becomes a normal thing without xue yang really noticing and then one day he’s suddenly like oh shit. he’s never wanted romance but there he is, being a full time boyfriend and kinda liking it. holy fucking shit.
like, he never understood what’s all that fuss about romance and handholding and staring lovingly into each other’s eyes and small gentle kisses… that shit was fucking stupid. and, even more, fucking boring. people “in love” were fucking stupid and boring. and pathetic.
he rarely ever did “relationships” at all. he really didn’t need all that silly stuff to just fuck somebody. he preferred casual sex, mostly one night stands. the longest kinda relationship he ever had with anyone was with jin guangyao but they were friends with benefits. making lovey-dovy eyes at each other? holding hands? no thank you. (jiggy had zewu jun for that.)
and then xue yang lands in yi city with xiao xingchen. and wouldn’t that be absolutely hilarious if he managed to seduce the bright moon gentle breeze? hilarious and with a prospect of some great sex because xiao xingchen is a really hot piece of ass. and yeah ok it’s going to take some time but he had time, not like he needed to go anywhere anyway... and never ever before it took him so much time to get into someone’s pants, but the game of seduction is so funny it’s worth all the time and effort and he could be patient if he wanted to.
and they go through all the cutesy romantic stages of relationship that xue yang always skipped to get right to the sex but isn’t it hilarious? xiao xingchen holding hands with his worst enemy! xiao xingchen giving cute little kisses to his worst enemy! cuddling with his worst enemy! oh if he only knew! (and it’s only gonna get better once they’ll start fucking)
it takes many many weeks full of little kisses and soft gentle caresses and cuddles before xiao xingchen finally gives in and they fuck. but even after they started having sex all the romantic shit never stops.
and xue yang gets so used to this that it doesn’t even make him cackle inside anymore. it just feels so natural, waking up with xiao xingchen right beside him, xiao xingchen feeding him candy in the morning, holding hands while they go for a walk, stealing quick little kisses during the day, cuddling on the porch and taking an afternoon nap together.
and one evening xiao xingchen sits beside him and, without even thinking, he immediately takes xiao xingchen’s hand in his and xiao xingchen smiles so sweetly and leans his head on xue yang’s shoulder and xue yang squeezes his hand tighter… and then it hits him. like a brick on the head. this is nice. he’s smiling like a fucking idiot. he likes this. he fucking likes this. holding hands with xiao xingchen makes him weirdly warm inside his black cold empty soul. and then he remembers that during past two months he caught himself like three fucking times staring lovingly at xiao xingchen. like jin guagyao and fucking zewu jun. and oh no this is bad. this is very fucking bad. are these feelings? he has feelings? what the fucking fuck. how did it even happen? it was all supposed to be just a fucking joke.
and he feels so much rage. he doesn’t even know if he’s more angry with himself or with xiao xingchen. (no. it’s definitely xiao xingchen. it’s all xiao xingchen’s fucking fault. how dare xiao xingchen make him feel things. he didn’t do this kind of shit. he didn’t like this kind of romantic shit. fuck fuck fuck what the fucking fuck)
and he spends the next day absolutely furious inside. he even briefly contemplates detonating all his current life and telling xiao xingchen about all the stupid villagers he killed. that will fucking teach him!
but then he thinks “ok. fine. I do what I want. and if that’s what I want now then I guess it’s what we’re doing now. xiao xingchen is special and he can be special. whatever.”
(and then he decides not to think anymore about this. he definitely won’t think about emotional attachment and shit like this. because it was definitely not that. he didn’t do emotional attachment. it was just some silly hand holding. nice but nothing serious… right?)

If you love a femme fatale in MDZS, here is a canon one for you.
This going to be long post with pictures, please remind yourself that skim reading or read just half of a post and then kick a fuss is unbecoming of an intellectual being humans suppose to be. Any discussion after finished reading the whole post is welcome. Also I’m not an expert on Chinese culture, just amateur with passion, and English is not my first language, if any grammar, spelling, or context error have been detected, please let me know, politely. I’m always willing to learn and improve.
From my observation, there is not a small part of this fandom salivating for a gorgeous seductive manipulative duplicitous bitch. Please believe me that we already have one in the canon, even with a fan. Though the correct term would be a Homme Fatal, a male equivalent of Femme Fatale.
Some of you may think of this man [Pic Source: Manhua]
Tumblr media
No, not him. Not Nie Huaisang. This is a plot device for shock value.
You may have ask, then it must be this man right, but he doesn’t hold a fan? [Pic source: audio drama]
Tumblr media
Also sadly no, not Jin Guangyao either. This man need to a kick and ‘son of a whore’ commentary from Nie Mingjue to motivate himself enough to kill him, too masochistic sentimental and not enough of ‘seducing’ evidence.
Homme Fatal, by the definition from Wikitionary, is “An ultimately seductive and dangerous man; a womanizer.”
Who fit this description most in MDZS? It’s this man, Jin Guangshan.
Let me introduce you to the real sexy manipulative scheming duplicitous mastermind of MDZS. With a fan. [Pic source: Donghua]
Tumblr media
Now you might want to scream, this piece of trash, a man whore, slimy power hungry scumbag of the cultivation society Jin Guangshan? Are we talking about the same man? Yes, we are. And now I will elaborate.
First, look at his face, even though it might be universal agreement that he is not a good man, his appearance and his mannerism are indeed a seductive handsome man. Let me remind you again that these are his children.
Tumblr media
From left to right: Jin Zixuan, Jin Guangyao, Qin Su, Mo Xuanyu [All pics are from Manhua]
They are undeniably, gorgeous. Jin Zixuan was rank 3rd in the young master list, that’s enough evidence of his good look. Jin guangyao may get most of his look from his mother - according to Guanyin statue that model after his mother’s face but people still thought it was his - but he still has his father’s charm. Qin Su is a beauty, even though we know nearly nothing about her, and Mo xuanyu’s face is definitely not shabby. Jin Guangshan’s gene is indeed worthy of a Jin’s name.
Second, Jin Guanshan is a dangerous man, might have been the most dangerous one on par with Wen Ruohan, even he was the weaker one in term of cultivation, at least you will have a gist if Wen Ruohan want you dead, you mostly still in the dark and not even wondering on your dead bed that did Jin Guangshan had a hand in your downfall.
People like to forget that this man was Lanling Jin sect leader, sit on the throne in the viper pit call Jinlin Tower. That sect full of backstabbing people, gossips, and a lot of maneuvering in the dark. I’m still curious how in the heavens Jin Zixuan grow up to be the man he was in that kind of environment to be honest.
I can’t remember that Jin Guangshan was the oldest one in his generation or not, but we could assume that he surely at least had a sibling of main family line, because we have Jin Zixun, a man in ‘Zi’ generation who close enough to main family to share the ‘Zi’ character in his courtesy name, raise next to the clan heir as a spare one, and he call Jin Guangshan “uncle” (Can’t remember which one between Bó Fù/older paternal uncle or Shū Fù/younger paternal uncle).
Which mean he already a winner of his generation, when the story start, Lanling Jin was his domain, he was the highest authority over there with no contest, we never see anyone from Jin sect disobey him. Madam Jin can only voice out her displeasure, but can’t do anything regarding of her husband conduct. Their marriage, arranged as they were, is what tied Jin clan and her family together, which mean her maternal clan also on a good term with Jin, she cannot kick a fuss, as a marriage in ancient time never a matter of two people, it’s a matter of two families.
And he was in process of securing his legitimated son place too. He raise his nephew as a ‘second best’, making sure that Jin Zixun will not have any ambition to ‘go above his station’ as we can see in the novel that Jin Zixun is Jin Zixuan’s fanboy or his lackey, he always praising or cheering Jin Zixuan, behave obediently toward his uncle, like that was his job. Jin Guangshan definitely win this one over already.
Now, one did not become a sect leader of a Great Sect and stay in power by being an incompetent moron. His habits of sleeping around may disgust people, but here me out, this is not unusual for a man of his status. His affairs with prostitutes [i.e Meng Shi] are easiest to take care, by the contract of transection, therefore he is blameless in the eyes of gentry class, they could only scold him for being ‘overindulgent’ or ‘lustful’, and he always go for the best one around, so some people might even praise him for his taste. Commoners and gentry class ladies [i.e. Second Lady Mo] are different, sleeping with those gentry class young miss not only a pleasure for him, it also could be a great way of getting information and blackmailing people too. Because if he let the public know which young lady he had already ‘conquered’, his reputation suffer nothing, but the lady in question will be ruined beyond saving, that’s one of the reason madam Qin decide to keep her raped quiet. And the lady’s reputation is link to her family, they will do many things just to keep Jin Guangshan happy and not to be shamed in public. Or if anyone want to have a problem with him, they still need to look at the social standing he had, both from his position as Sect Leader Jin and his extensive connections from all parties he threw. And if you think he would care about non-cultivators’ opinions, you have mistaken, to quote Tywin Lannister, "A Lion Doesn't Concern Himself With The Opinions Of The Sheep". Unlink Jin Guagyao who need his reputation to be spotless or else he’ll get a canon ending, the only ones he need to at least pretend to care are his cultivator peers of the same gentry class.
Sadly, him kicking Meng Yao down the stairs also ‘acceptable’ by the society standard of that era, because it’s Meng Yao who ‘trying to reach where he didn’t belong’ in the eyes of gentry, illegitimate children, if not acknowledged, have nothing to do with their father’s family. Cruel? Yes. But nobody care, this even become a famous joke, enough that people like Nie Mingjue know.
This prove that even he was a handsome man with a bad bitch vibes, many ladies still want to sleep with him, society still on his side, what a skill to have in one arsenal.
He was the only sect leader - in the Great sects categories - to get along with Wen Ruohan or play his card right, compare to Nie sect that lost the previous sect leader to a blatant assassination plot, but could only endure, the Lan’s Gusu was burned, Qingheng-Jun’s death, Lan Xichen need to flee for his life and his clan’s legacy, the Jiang’s Lotus pier suffer a massacre, and then you have Lanling Jin who sit on the fence with no damage.
Then Sunshot campaign happen, he let his heir lead the Jin force while stay at Jinlin Tower, he feigned ignorance over Nie Mingjue’s letter concerning Meng Yao, if Meng Yao die, he would have one less problem in his life, if he survive then Jin clan still get a soldier to be used, no big deal. And when Meng Yao become a spy, this also benefit him greatly, if the Wen wins, he could say that he sent Wen Ruohan a good tool and was force to join the Sunshot side, pulling “Look at how unwilling I was, the Jin not even try that hard you see”.
We already witness he jump in full force to reap the benefit after the Wen lost, Jin Guangshan is smart and skill enough to wait for the clear victory, legitimize Jin Guangyao to take the war credits, with a ‘Guang’ name to exclude him from succession line, with a connection to Lan and Nie clans via Sworn Brotherhood. The best of all is no one can publicly complain anything, Jin clan is the most intact great clan after war, Lan need money for their rebuild their home, Jiang need to be rebuild from scratch, Nie Mingjue lack seniority to scold a man of his father generation, Lan Qiren who is in the same generation lack a position to do so, smaller sects also need his backing to rebuild, want to be on his good side or risking annihilation when no one can help them. He rope in the Jiang clan by Jiang Yanli’s marriage, for the society, he is the benevolent man who honors the promise of two clans even when the Jiang is still in ruin, he is a kind man who help the younger generation, what a good father-in-law to be. Now do you feel that this man is scary? He come out of war, lying in his own house but still emerge with enough political power to maneuvering society, that’s an achievement on its own.
Then he look at Yiling Patriarch, his next goal. If he cannot control this dangerous man then let him be destroy and let him create the one that will belong to Jin clan. Not dissimilar to the opinion in Cold War related to nuclear weapon. First he sow a discord between Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian, play the insecurities of young sect leader who has no family backing, pressure him with society, even though losing his heir was out of the plan. He used his ‘spare son’, who has a great work resume for shady business, to do all his dirty work and supervise demonic cultivation experiment that if society found out he could have a perfect scapegoat, after all, it’s not surprise for ‘a son of a whore’ with ‘dirty blood and upbringing’ to be like that. Daggling his ‘love and legitimize’ over Jin guangyao’s head to ensure loyalty and obedience. Getting Mo Xuanyu into the clan also sent a message that ‘I can always replace you with any of my spare’. He let Xue Yang have fun with the Chang clan, a revenge massacre while tasting demonic cultivation experiment, win-win for then both, Nie Mingjue went to talk with Jin Guangshan on this matter but Jin Guangyao end up taking all the blame of his father’s conduct, wow. Correct me if I’m wrong here, Jin Guangshan was the one who order Nie Mingjue’s death wasn’t he. If yes, then his plan to establish Jin sect as the main power after the war is really clean cut, ‘get rid of the one I can’t control’.
Let’s be real, Jin Guangshan must be the best politician of his own generation, Wen Ruohan is too strong for this skill to be essential, but doesn’t mean he isn’t good (may be next essay then), Jiang Fengmian wasn’t a bad sect leader, but he just too mild for that political climate, late Nie sect leader was too careless in whatever spat he had with Wen Ruohan, and Qingheng-jun was a fail sect leader. Yes, marry for love must be so romantic, but then he just throw all his responsibility onto Lan Qiren’s shoulder, poor man, what a disaster older brother to have, madam Lan debacle must be a political nightmare.
Jin Guangshan’s mistake was he overvalue himself in Jin Guangyao’s eyes, and underestimated how low his bastard son willing to sink to before rise up, but need to give it up to him though, poetic justice of his death is so iconic. Not many people can claim they die while doing what they love aren’t they.

for the ask list,,,, 10, 22 & 23 :)
from the salty asks
10. Most disliked arc? Why?
this one is difficult bc there aren’t so many arcs that i dislike, but rather they’re just arcs that i emotionally can’t get through, like the yi city arc. however if i did have to choose it would be when lotus pier had just been burnt down, jc gets his core melted, wwx gives jc his—that one. and i’m more focusing on the whole wwx giving jc his core through an operation that, on a coin toss, could kill both of them or succeed and they did so without asking jc and trucking him into saying yes to getting a golden core by lying about where it would be coming from. just the whole deception that causes so many problems later that could have been easily solved if they just talked rlly sets me off
22. Popular character you hate?
jin guagyao. the utter contempt i hold towards him knows no bounds like literally there is no character i genuinely despise more than him
23. Unpopular character you love?
not so much unpopular just that there is next to no conetent for them, but jinzhu and yinzhu. i just think they’re so cool even if we only saw them, like, once lesbian brain go brrrr

Jin Sibling Au Part 3
Okay before I start on day three of writing the next three pages of this outline I wanted to make a quick note. I noticed that my current blog may not be best place to put my writing in. It is eclectic with humor and politics along with story ideas that I’m still working on. So I may make another blog and just reblog this along with the other Jin Sibling Au. Just a heads up, I just need to come up for a name.
Welp ¯\_(ツ)_/¯on with the outline
Meng Yao meets Wen Qing. It takes a bit of finagling, but he convinces her to help him. It takes a lot of finagling! Especially when Wen Ning helps Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian. As far as he knows as long as they can keep Wen Ning safe she is fine helping him. She doesn’t know what he is doing with some information, but she finally gets an idea, but it’s too late. If she tells Wen Rouhan, her brother may suffer the consequences. All she can do is help Meng Yao and hope it helps her in the long run.
Notes: Meng Yao sees how Wen Qing protects her brother while Wen Ning is nothing like her.
He asks Wen Ning if has ever been jealous of Wen Qings forceful personality. Wen Ning say’s no because he knows his sister cares and loves him. In fact, he compares it to a warm blanket of love that he can’t get enough of. Meng Yao thinks it’s too gushy ̄へ ̄
This is right after Wen Rouhan’s defeat:
After Wen Rouhan’s defeat, Meng Yao becomes Jin Guangyao. Both brothers have not talked, but Guangyao knows that Jixuan may be upset with him.
The news about Meng Yao formally accepted into the Jin sect is met with mixed reviews. A majority thinks this is wonderful, including Xichen who know’s how hard Meng Yao Jin Guangyao worked to have Sect Leader Jin to acknowledge him.
Nie Mingjue is skeptical but keeps his mouth shut. He still remembers the actions that JGY did.
He tries hard to please his father (he did an excellent job with the banquet) but is conflicted when he’s tasked to ensure the elimination of the last Wens. He speaks to Jin Guangshan that he could not have done this without the help of certain Wen’s but his father would not hear of it.
Jin Guangyao is now hesitant to talk to Jixuan. Jixuan however has become quite stubborn and meets face to face with his brother. They argue first about not sending each other letters (they both agree that maybe it’s pointless to fight about that) Then Jixuan pleads to please be careful about following father’s every whim. He says’s he can talk to mother and convince her to have him under her care.
Guangyao refuses, he knows Madam Jin would rather swallow needles than protect him, and states he just needs to do what father order’s showing he is worthy. He’s trying to convince both his brother and self. Jixuan doesn’t accept his choice and runs off. Guangyao has trouble swallowing the guilt he feels. He shouldn’t feel guilty, after all the Wen’s aren’t family and his brother surely won’t know what he’s about to do, right? He’s now part of the Jin Sect, he can finally spend time with his younger brother and he’s sure he can get father’s love.
Jixuan meets Yanli who is there to help her brother’s. They end up talking which is sweet and say’s he envies Yanli. This makes her confused until he states that even though her brothers are a terror for him, he can see how much they love her and what they will do for her.
Yanli states that yes, her brothers are a handful but they are wonderful to be around with and is grateful to have them in her life.
There is a lot of blushing and Jixuan may have wondered what it is like to hold her hand a lot. Then he remembers that he has yet to give her a formal apology for his accusation during the war. Yeah no, that simple apology is not good enough she deserves better.
Meanwhile, Xichen realizes that Guangyao is upset and suggests that they walk to talk in private. It’s okay, thinks Guangyao, after all it’s great to catch up with a friend.
They end up talking, which leads to a sweet, unexpected kiss. Xichen is excited and confused. He didn’t expect his feelings to lead to this, but it makes him happy. With Guangyao, however, he feels horrified. This will not work. His father will find out and cast him out and the cultivation world will have another reason to look down on him, after all he is the son of a prostitute (seriously his issue with this irks me, but I can see why he is hung up about it. It pisses him off no matter how much he tells Jixuan to not worry about it, however it will still be something that bothers him. I will unleash the sibling love from Jixuan as soon as they both stop arguing!)
Guangyao leaves abruptly, leaving a brokenhearted Xichen. o(TヘTo)
Nie Mingjue still does not trust, even though Lan Xichen tells him that he needs to give Jin Guangyao a chance. Mingjue is quick to bring up how Guangyao is now ignoring him. This does hurt Xichen but makes no comment on it.
In order to ensure that he can keep an eye on his competitors, Jin Guangshan wants Jin Guangyao to talk to them.
In an act of desperation Xichen asks for the vow of brotherhood Mingjue agrees and Guangyao is forced to smile and agree.
Xichen: Want’s to at least have a connection with Guangyao. He may not be interested in him romantically but maybe still be there for him as a friend and show Mingjue  that he is a good person.
Mingjue: Knows that something is going on and believes that Jin Guangyao is planning something.
Guanyao: Follows his father’s wishes to have some sort of alliance and keep an eye on both sects. He refuses to think about that kiss, even though he has taken a few careful glimpses towards Xichen’s direction.
Even though Jixuan is upset with Guangyao, he does end up going to him for advice:
“Guangyao, I need your assistance!” Jixuan winces. He didn’t mean to make it sound like an order, but for sure his brother can tell not to take it to heart. The courtesy bow proves him wrong.
“Of course, How may I be of service? (❁^◡^❁)” Jixuan frowns. This was not going how he thought it was going to go. ಠ_ಠ
“Stop that!” He orders placing his hands on his brothers arms, maybe a bit too forceful, so he did not have to bow. “I may be mad at you, but you're still my brother, not a servant.”
Guangyao surprised but nods. Jixuan goes back to the topic at hand.
“Anyway, help me, please.” Guangyao laughs. Jixuan looked embarrassed, it must not be easy for him to also for help, the question is why? He never had trouble asking for help on his education or phrases he did not understand in the common folk.
“All right, I will help you, brother. Now what can I do to help.” Guangyao replies, interested to find out why his brother is so nervous.
“Better! Well, I need help-” he gets nervous visibly, hands behind his back, looking everywhere but Guangyao as he paced back and forth “-normally I go to mother but I don’t want to hear her nag at me again. I know you will too, but it won't sound as irritating.”
“What does Madam Jin-” Begins Guangyao then instantly puts the pieces together. “Does this have to do about Lady Jiang Yanli?” Jixuan is silent, stopped pacing to look at his brother but his face is red. Guangyao laughs at him and retorts at him.
           “I told you so!”
Jixuan looks betrayed and then grumpy. Is this how brothers really interact? You fight with each other, but can still talk to one another and then betray you when you ask for their help?
Once his teasing is done Guangyao smiles at him. “Tell me what do you need help with exactly?”
“I need to woo Yanli, I did her wrong and accused her unjustly. I apologized, but only simply. Now I want to do her right, that apology doesn’t feel enough.” Then in a rather meek voice, “Please help me.”
Something in that voice, how Jixuan is treating him now (no he’s done it before just never in public but wasn’t for the lack of trying) warms his heart. It also reminds him of how Xichen Zewu-jun treats him. No, that’s wrong. Is Jixuan looking up to him? That’s a little ridiculous. Shaking his thoughts away, he agrees to come up with a proper formal apology. Who knew he would seriously take his advice with ‘I’m sorry’. He may need to be careful with his teasing.
Okay, So I wrote more of the outline but still need to figure out some kinks here and there. I almost had a few events mixed in, that I had to consult the wiki. I love the web series, but I am not spending a lot of time going through it. So I do know that Jin Jixuan is older (Thank you @minutemarch for the correction :-D), but in this au universe he is now younger! You can thank my confused self who misread the wiki page and other sources.
So yeah, love interest for both siblings but still a hot mess for all parties involved. After all, Yanli may have received an apology, but after all the indifference she received from Jixuan, he will need Guangyao to help him. Especially with Yanli’s brother’s in her corner ready to defend her. (I don’t mean to make them sound horrible but this is in the point of view of Jin siblings so it comes across that way ಥ_ಥ)
And we are not forgetting Guangyao and Xichen. I feel that it will be extremely angsty at their end too. Tbh I have more written for them but I keep finding myself adding more for Jixuan and Yanli.
Next part: Jixuan tries his hand at helping Guagyao with Xichen... you should probably ask the right people and not the ones who’s sister you’ve made upset.
Note: the next part will be on my new blog @lolmouseywriting

The Untamed, Episode 42
Killing the lovers: Camera work and direction.
The murder of Qin Su
The most formidable aspect of the series’ villain, the one that sets him up as a dangerous and unpredictable antagonist, is the culling of his lovers. From all three of his established lovers, Nie MIngjue, Qin Su and Lan Xichen it’s only the latter who survives, but not because Jin Guangyao did not attempt to kill him. And by the end it can be argued that his survival is a punishment in itself, since his oversights allowed for so many people to be killed, often right before his eyes.
Qin Su, Jin Guangyao’s half sister and wife, discovers the truth about their relationship after a letter, and confronts him immediately. Jin Guangyao tries to placate and comfort her, but when it appears he might risk being publicly exposed, he quickly decides to murder her.
At some point it was decided in the production to downplay the murder adding Wei Wuxian’s voice over about Qin Su looking “alright” in the dungeon. But both camera work and actor work reveal that it is Jin Guangyao who orchestrates her murder. Qin Su from the beginning seems subdued- she has no visual references of her original angered, disgusted and even struggling demeanor. She seems to be in a trance. Accordingly Jin Guangyao in front of the others, does not approach her, does not touch her, and he does not even address her like when they were in private.
It’s as if he is trying to not disturb her subdued state, so he can suggest to her suicide with a hypnotic monologue. Jin Guangyao might knife unsuspecting victims, but when it comes to lovers, he wants to kill them with his words. He would have them destroy themselves, in order to reaffirm his power over them, by a way of mirroring his own behavior.
When the knife appears in episode 42, it’s always in relation to Qin Su visually. In an elaborate choreography of the frame, it floats from the far distant side of the room towards her, always at her angle as if seeking her reach. When we see her in relation to Jin Guangyao’s body, it’s always the knife that is prominent. When we see him, Qin Su is a blurry figure in the background or a presence off frame like an afterthought.
Her body and her face always angle perfectly with shots of the knife, but the knife is always seen from the perspective of Jin Guangyao. Its visual distance to the viewer is equal to the visual distance from his eyes, belaying he is the one who controls its destructive powers. This enhances the invisibility Jin Guangyao enjoys as a murderer. We will never catch him red-handed with a lover.
Qin Su’s murder might seem impersonal, but it has almost an imperiousness about it. Jin Guangyao seems to offer his close relatives the chance to die by a choice they’ve made. Qin Su’s choice upon rejecting him as a husband, was to be as far away from him as possible. So in return he offers her this impersonal death. As she reaches for the knife, the whole room seems to animate with tension, except of course for Jin Guangyao. As her hand reaches the hilt of the dagger, his face remains serene, and as she sinks it to her abdomen the direction avoids showing us his expression, as if out of respect for Qin Su.
Because to see so quickly Jin Guangyao pretend at shock, would be a belittling act on the magnitude of her character. As both fall back on the settee, their forms take so little space, they are hardly visible. Such a wide shot for such an important event is usually used to diminish the anguish of the viewer- so they can follow up on the rest of the plot. But here it also serves as a respite so the character of Jin Guagyao can have the time to unlock genuine feelings of agony without clashing uncomfortably with his duplicity.
Qin Su being a minor character, received tremendous directorial attention and in my opinion her death is on par with Nie Mingjue’s death. She is the disposable lover, but only because her story is to convulted and tragic to remain to the forefront of the series without making it unpalatable. Something that I found regrettable since it highlights most perfectly the viciousness of the villain’s love.
