Clearly you’ve got a lot of opinions abt the characterisations of the batfam in fandom /pos
Can you elaborate on your interpretation for all of them? /gen
it’s called caring too much — and it’s incurable! wrt my personal interpretation, that's a long and complicated answer, so ill just focus on the internal character of the waynes (specifically bruce and his five canonical kids).
bruce wayne is a control freak, we know this. his parents were killed for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and he has literally never ever been able to truly process it. the degree to which he is controlling - firing robins, survelling his allies without their consent, compiling personal information from others, disregarding others feelings in favour of his own - is all about trying to achieve the best possible outcome. everything he does is justified, because if he's in control then he can stop bad things from happening. it is all in favour of the greater good. it's the logic of an eight year old who's just lost everything and hasn't grown up.
if bruce's trauma manifests control then dick's manifests personal perfectionism. he holds himself to such an absurd standard because he's a flier - when you're catching someone on the trapeze you quite literally have to be there, always, ready to take their hand. if you don't, they fall. if there's no net, if dick isn't the net, then they die. he’s always swinging back out and in again, waiting for the next person to slip through his fingers. he does not fear falling, only what will happen when he hits the ground. he’s a born performer made to be an atlas, carrying an unbearable weight that anchors him to the earth.
jason after death is a tragedy of his own creation, and dc's worst crime is trying to justify the terrible decisions he makes. jason isn’t right, because what he wants is not about protecting other kids from his fate or being a better batman. he wants to be personally vindicated, even though he knows it's impossible. jason rejected himself, bruce, everything, in order to transform into a weapon to enact violence. deep down he's so angry, so hurt, that he'll go after other children - tim, damian, mia - and still decry bruce in the same breath. killing the joker, killing bruce, killing dick, killing every robin before or since won't take him back to who he was before. you cannot go back. you can never go back.
cass sees everything. she can't unsee it, she can't ignore it, nothing in the body can be truly hidden from her, but like bruce that doesn't mean she's always right. she killed a man and witnessed his death, and thus will never take another life. she is all knowing, but she was not born knowing herself. she's jason in reverse — she turns from steel to flesh and bone. she will do whatever it takes to be good. she has made herself real.
tim chose this life in the most literal sense of the word, and then kept choosing it. it’s his duty, it’s his honour, it has hollowed him out and left nothing behind. his tethers to the world snap one by one — janet and jack and darla and dana and steph and kon — and suddenly it’s much harder to extricate himself from the black. robin, dick grayson, is his guiding north star, but his north star is only human. he knows he is capable, he knows this is his choice, and he knows he has long since lost the chance to unchoose.
damian is raised in the shadow of the bat. he is born of blood. he knew death before he knew his father. he is a child. he is ancient. he is a killer. he only wants to do good. he loves his mother. his father is gone before he learns to love damian. damian loves someone else who wears the bat but does not carry wayne name. everything he knows about himself is questioned — robin is given to him, and suddenly he can decide his own fate, make his own family. he wants to be the best, but he doesn’t know what he wants that to mean anymore. he wants the chance to find out.

What is wrong with you!? : AK!Jason Todd x reader
Tumblr media
Just a little something to outline how i see this verse going. Suggestions/requests/feedback is highly appreciated.
WARNINGS: angst, SMUT minors DNI, probably bit of OOC
***
He was strong enough to snap her body in two if he wanted.
To break her neck.
To choke her.
To hurt her.
But somehow in his crazy, washed brain, he knew he needed her. And in some messed up, freaked out, impaired way he felt for her.
Not only because she knew what he’s been through, but because it was also so easy to dump all his frustration into her.
He failed in his mission to kill Batman?
Rough sex
His militia was questioning his abilities to lead?
Blowing steam off while pounding into her.
Did he love her?
Yes.
No.
Honestly, what is love? He lost the meaning of this word a long time ago. What he felt for her was like what the owner feels for a pet. Some kind of allegiance. Sure, he would feel some sort of emptiness if someone were to take her away and would probably kill that person off while getting his revenge, but it was nothing more than that.
Or at least that was what he was telling himself.
He was not Robin anymore and his childish infatuation for her surely turned into something more animalistic. She was at his mercy.
Just like right now.
There were some disturbances in the force and it made him angry. Angry enough to grab her from the tech room where she was working and drag her into his own bed, stripping off his armor and clothes, doing the same to her, pressing her to the mattress with all the brute strength he had.
“Jace…..” she writhed underneath him, feeling him kiss her body with the animalistic urgency, biting, scratching and squeezing. All of her body, except her mouth. He avoided that like a plague. He didn’t need intimacy, closeness and all that bullshit. She was just a playtoy for him. The same way she was for Harley back in the days. The same way he was for Joker. “Please….” A single tear flew down her cheek.
“Shut up.” He hissed, entering her without any prep or warning, just with one push. And it hurt like hell, even after all this time she was kept in Arkham like a prisoner. Well, he was big after all. Her poor body should have been used to all kind of torture by now, but the truth was far from that. And Jason made sure she stayed tight for him. “Just shut the fuck up and take what I give you.” Jason added, putting a hand on her mouth to muffle the scream she dared to let out.
“Jace….” She moaned, not sure if it was pleasure or pain. The fact was that she might have developed some sort of Stockholm syndrome.  She knew him when he was Robin. She loved him when he was Robin and in the back of her head she had this crazy scenario that if she could only comply with his action and commands he would come back to her. Love her back. Love her again.
Poor little thing thought she could save him from himself.
She believed that she could be the one to see and have the real Jason, not the Arkham Knight. But the more she tried, the more she failed. “Baby….” She writhed, one of her hand reaching for his chest and shoulder, trying to touch him, to feel his skin against her, to ground herself.
Mistake.
She wasn’t appalled or disgusted by marks Joker left on him.
He was.
“Get your hands off me!” he shouted and grabbed her tiny wrist in his ironclad grip, leaving bruises and making her whimper in pain. She should have known better. He hated his body, all those scars and imperfections. He hated being reminded of the past tortures and rough treatment and her touch, even if it was so loving and tender did just that. “You little whore!”
“I’m sorry.” She cried out “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to…..”
“Just shut up!” he yelled picking up the pace, pounding into her like she was nothing more than a piece of meat. He did not care about her silent begging, pleading and whines. If anything, having such sense of control only spur him on. “I know you like it, don’t you? Being treated like a slut you are? Hm? Y/N? Answer me!”
“Jace…..” she begged, squirming and trying to free her hands, which were now pinned above her head “I….I…..” he was rough, brutal even, but he never failed to bring her pleasure, by some twisted accident igniting the fire inside her and her body slowly started to take over making her unable to form any coherent though, settling on arching her back, whining and silently begging him to not stop while losing her breath.
“So cock drunk, aren’t you?” he groaned, pushing her body back to the bed harshly, one hand still pinning her hands to the mattress, the other gripping her hip, pushing into her more, harder, faster. “So fucking stupid you can’t even answer one question?”
“I….. ah! Please…..” she whined throwing her head back, exposing the soft flesh of her throat.
“Oh, no, you don’t get to cum. You’re here to serve me, remember? Not the other way round.”
“please…. Jay, please…. I’m so….. “ she gulped awkwardly. She shouldn’t even think about saying it, but it just slipped past her lips “so close. So good. You’re so good. God, Jason, please, please, let me. “
“No.” he smirked vindictively grabbing her throat, cutting the air supply and watching her struggling to breathe. He himself was so close to cumming now.
Finally, with just one more thrust he came inside her, letting out groans and animalistic sounds. But not words. He felt good with her, but it wasn’t like he was going to admit it.
And this time she got lucky since she managed to orgasm with him.
It happened from time to time, not that he cared at all.
“I guess I’ll see you tomorrow night.” He pulled out, immediately reaching for his pants ready to go back to his duties.
“Don’t go.” She cried out, pulling herself up, her blurry eyes and tear stained face making him stop for a second. What the fuck was wrong with her? He treated her like nothing and she still gave him that loving gaze? Why? She was supposed to break, to let go of all her hopes and fantasies filled with happy future with him and yet, all his actions did nothing to make her do that.  “Please, don’t leave me.” She begged, her body shaking, clearly getting into the subdrop phase. She needed aftercare, even the slightest aspect of it. Her entire posture, her curved, trembling lips, the stain from the tears on her cheek.
She was so fragile and vulnerable.
She was so pathetic.
Fuck!
Those were the times when something in him broke. He might have been brainwashed to hate batman and everything connected to him, his freaking assistant included, but it was y/n. His friend, his first love (and most probably last, since he didn’t have much opportunities to meet girls). He wanted to hold her. She’s been through enough. But he couldn’t break. And even her sad eyes and extended shaking arms were not enough to make him change his mind.
“Clean yourself up.” He muttered “you’re dripping.”
And then he moved towards the adjacent bathroom. He needed a moment for himself. To collect and control every stupid emotion bursting inside him. The thin walls however did nothing to muffle the sobbing and crying of Y/N, who was shaking on the bed, silently calling his name, begging for attention like a little child. Even after all he’s done he was crying for him, wanting his touch and hugs and care and attention.
Fuck, he couldn’t go soft.
But it was painful to hear her like this.
To see her broken. By him. By the only person she wanted and need.
Fuck, she was making him soft.
He yelled in frustration and punched the mirror.
Hard. Hard enough to break it into little pieces that fell to the ground and hurt his knuckles.
The sound clearly scared her, since in a second she appeared in the bathroom door, watching him bleed to the floor. Wearing only her shirt and panties since it was all she could grab in a hurry to check on him.
Fucking check if he was all right.
“what are you staring at?!” he yelled turning towards her. Her eyes wide in fear, her lips trembling, her body shaking but she was so fucking beautiful like this. Just like in the other life, before Harley left her fingerprints on Y/N.
“I… I …..” she stuttered “you’re hurt.”
“Yeah, so what? It’s not like I haven’t been before.” He shrugged, shoving her away, trying to move past her.
“Let me help you.” she whispered, lifting her hand trying to reach him, but quickly realizing how much of a mistake it would be. Again. “Let me patch you up.”
“Why?”
“Cause I don’t want you to bleed. I don’t want to see you like this. Please, Jason, let me…. Let me help you.” she mumbled looking at the ground, too shy and scared of another punishment for even suggesting something like that .
Jason couldn’t comprehend it.
How was it possible that she wasn’t completely broken like him?
What the fuck was wrong with her?!
“Why do you care?!” he yelled in frustration, grabbing her shoulders and pushing her into the wall, a little squeal escaping her lips in the process. “Why?” he grabbed her chin making her look at him
“You know why…..” she sobbed
“don’t you dare saying it!”
“I…. I won’t….. I won’t, I promise. Please…. It hurts.” He let her go, preventing her from falling to the ground. “Let me….”
“Grab the kit. Just do your job. And do it silently. I don’t want any other stupid words coming out of your mouth, you hear me?”
She nodded and without a sound sat him on the bed taking a spot next to him. Her skillful, soft hands patching him up quicker than anyone else ever could. Years of practice as Wayne assistant (i.e. Batman’s helper).
“thank you” he whispered when she was done, not looking at her. She just nodded again, smiled lightly through the tears and laid down on the bed, not daring to hope for anything. Not anymore. And Jason was not going to give her anything, apart from throwing her a blanket so she could cover herself. And then he left, leaving her in the dark, still unable to figure out what was wrong with her.

The Goonion would like a Word
Bruce had never had an experience like this before, letters of ransom from any of his rogues? Certainly! But the Goonion only ever left messages when they were paying bail for their own, and he was becoming worried as to why Jason’s Goons had posted a message to him via The Goonion.
“To Batman of Gotham, New Jersey, United States of America, We would like to have a word with you in regards to a pair of Meta Adjacent individuals we would like to harbor here in Gotham, we are only extending the courtesy to you regarding them due to the fact that the United States Government refuses to acknowledge them as people due to their conditions, the Boss said he would tell you himself, if he has not already he likely will soon. Suffice to say a family of three is coming to Gotham as their last chance at a safe harbor and we would prefer it if you did not get on their cases. We hope to receive your response without any broken bones, The Goonion, Gotham, New Jersey Branch.” Tim was staring at the paper, the stationary of The Goonion, with confusion, Dick, Barbara, Cass, and Stephany seemed rather accepting of it, and Damian was confused.
“What is this, Goonion?” His youngest asked, staring at the paper as Bruce read over the return address, the Iceberg Lounge, a server named Thomas.
“Ah, we haven’t told you about them yet have we?” Dick began, sitting back. “They’re nice folks, help get the Goons payed and are usually the ones to put their feet down when Rogues get outta hand for normal folks, for instance, the Joker does not have the stamp of approval for, many reasons. But primarily it’s due to his former Henchmen, including Harley, snitching on him to the Goonion.” Dick typed something into his phone, Damian’s own device pinging in his pocket, likely more info. “The Goonion has an odd relationship with us, we don’t go after them and they try to keep things regulated, Jason could probably tell you more, and it seems from the letter we do have to talk to him.” The door to the cave opened, and while Bruce looked up to see his second son come walking down the steps he seemed, tired, run down even.
“The Goonion already got to you? Good on them.” Jason huffed as he sat next to Damian, ruffling the boy’s head much to his exasperation and attempted swatting. “Situations fucked, the letter doesn’t even touch on the bigger parts but it gets, real fucky like, possibly gonna want to get Uncle Clark and Aunt Diana in on it fucky, definitely Constantine as well.” Well Bruce knew his flags rather well and if Jason was advocating for not only a League intervention but one headed by John Constantine? Bruce decided to address the original topic first.
“They can stay, but they will have to answer questions.” Jason huffed and leaned back.
“Ground rules then, the two younger kids? Meta Adjacent? They have a similar situation to me, and it turns out Ra’s is playing with not even a tenth of a full puzzle with the Lazarus Pit.” Everyone around the table stiffened, save Alfred who had come in behind Jason with a tea service, as Jason took a sip from the mug placed before him and nodding to Alfred. “Thank you. The details are spotty but the abridged form is this, the Lazarus pit is the remains of a bunch of people from a dimension to which we all go when we die, the residents therein call it the Infinite Realms since it services everyone that means every Person who has a faith or doesn’t has a place there. Furthermore these three’s parents who passed recently in a Government Sanctioned raid made a Portal to the Infinite Realms, and Lazarus Water? Corrupted, dirty, a literally soul eroding form of what makes up matter on that end of the divide, Ectoplasm.” Jason withdrew a vial from his pocket, a bright green and sluggish substances was held within. “This is pure ectoplasm, The Parents, a pair known as Doctors Jack and Madeline Fenton, introduced me to a Doctor from the Infinite Realms, suffice to say I am feeling much less angry and far more at peace with things, though apparently being angry is normal for the type of “Dead but Brought Back” I am.” Jason placed the vial on the table and slowly pushed it to Bruce, taking his hand back when he reached for it.
“Jazz, the eldest, is a student at Gotham University, or she is now, identities and the like will be handled later but for the younger two it’s time for some non starters, because apparenlty if you ask an Ecto Entity or anyone touched by the Infinite Realms how they died it sets off a “I Must Kill You Now” trigger in their head, essentially forcing them to suffer their deaths all over again until they deal with who or whatever asked the question, so no being a little nosey punk about it Tim.” Tim jolted at his name being said instead of Jason’s nickname for him but he nodded when he realized that his elder brother hadn’t looked away from him. Bruce was still proud the two had started to mend things so well, but as he stared at the vial a question swirled in his mind.
“Why did the Goonion send a letter then?” Jason stiffened slightly and rubbed the back of his neck.
“Alrighty, so you know how I’ve been going to College classes since a year ago? I met Jazz at one of them, as Jason Todd, son of Bruce Wayne and card carrying member of Red Hood’s Goonion. This was, sometime around Spring Semester, soooooo” Steph lunged up, mouth open with a squeak until Cass pulled her back down. Jason sighed and continued. “We started dating last year, she wants to be a psychiatrist and maay have started working for The Goonion in Star City when one of their guys ended up on her mentor’s patient bench. Her academics are already transferred to Gotham U but she’s still looking for a new Mentor.” Bruce made an affirmative noise at that, encouraging, Jason was holding something back, the younger siblings hadn’t been named yet. “The Goonion hired her former mentor and Jazz followed them in since they have really good benefits, and she has experience with the whole Capes and Crooks thing already. Though she told me she would rather she and her siblings explain that.”
So, Jasmine Fenton, after being a student for at least a year in Psychiatry, became a Goonion Psychiatrist, and then when her Parents died she takes her younger siblings, one of whom is rather recently adopted into the family by the looks of it, and flees her hometown, one Amity Park Illinois, which has a disturbingly blank file in the League databanks. “Yeah,” Jason began, looking over at the Batcomputer, scanning the total lack of data from two year ago on. “The Government locked their hometown down quick, they have a branch called the Ghost Investigation Ward, who managed to get a law in before our current Shining Dome of a President, was sworn in, apparenlty old Lex has been trying to rip that law to shredds since he found out about it and there’s something akin to a coup attempt going on from the GIW towards Lex. I looked into those guys already, I think it would be wiser to side with the current President and not a bunch of Loons who would dissect Uncle Clark and his kids if they got the chance.” Damian jerked slightly, turning to face Jason.
“What?”
“Yeah, Krypton is dead it’s a dead world, by some of the smaller parts of the Anti-Ecto Acts that means that all Kryptonians are ecto-beings and by that law have no sentience, and are just emotions imprinted on ectoplasm, given the fact I died once they would pick me up as well in a heartbeat, for “disposal” as they call it.” The room had become Still, Dick seemed furious, staring at the damning lack of info alongside a pale Tim, Damian who was still staring at Jason realized just why his brother had looked back to him and was also looking at Cass, they had been brought back by the pit, they were by Federal Law non-sentient. Bruce felt the arms of his chair bend slightly under his grip before breathing out his frustration.
“You have a plan?” Jason nodded, he seemed to be expecting worse, you really didn’t give him a reason not to, and began speaking.
“The Goonion will be dealing with protecting people who fall under the acts, we just need the JL to take this problem and light it on fire, drag it into the public eye and raid a few of the GIW’s bases that may have people, both from our side and theirs, in captivity. I will be going tonight to get Jazz and her Siblings from a bolt hole of theirs, an Aunt in Arkansas whose bound to be investigated is hiding them, I just need to borrow something.” Bruce allowed an eyebrow to climb up his forehead, he wants to borrow the Batplane for it.
“I’ll allow it, go and get them once it starts to become dark out, I’ll expect you back by dawn, do you have a place set up?” Jason blinked at him before nodding.
“Yeah, one of the safer corners of Crime Alley, closest part to Gotham University, three bedrooms, two bath, someone maaay have helped me pick it out.” Bruce nodded, he would get nowhere in trying to guess which of his other children, Alfred, or any of Jason’s friends, or even some of their own collectively reformed Rogues could have helped Jason in this, but suffice to say it was a safe harbor and one backed by some rather tough figures. The Goonion alone would give anyone trouble, but with them being in Crime Alley that meant that they were essentially in an invaders nightmare. Dead ends, construction, dilapidated or abandoned buildings, it was a natural ambush site. Jason then put a box on the table, it was a scanner of some sort.
“One of the reasons they’re coming here is this,” he flipped a switch and the machine began to frantically beep, practically sounding a long tone before Jason flipped it off again, “Gotham sits on a similar point to Amity Park, and as such we are LOADED with ambient ectoplasm, constantly stirred up by magic based curses of one sort or another it essentially blinds ectoplasmic tracking devices.” Bruce nodded, accepting the device as it was pushed down the table to him. “Jazz had apparently decided that they would run to Gotham if things went sideways like this anyways, we’re the closest ambiently effected city to Amity not ringed by GIW outposts and scanners.” Bruce paused in his observing of the machine, the GIW had surrounded other cities that had high ambient ectoplasm?
“Where?” Jason pulled out a small notepad.
“Well, Jazz wouldn’t tell us, but the Goonion has it’s ways, The GIW has encircled the following cities, Salem, Boston, and Springfield of Massachusetts, New Orleans, New York, Philadelphia and Gettysburg of Pennsylvania, Chicago Illinois, Savanah Georgia, D.C., and then San Francisco and San Antonio of California and Texas respectively, I asked for this list at 6 this morning, I was handed this current version at Noon, these were just the overt ones. Metropolis, Bludhaven, and Gotham, are currently not surrounded, there are locations between them but not many.” Bruce stood, watching as addresses were placed on the table, each assigned a sticky note and details.
“You should get ready to go get Jazz and her siblings, we’ll deal with this.” Bruce tapped on the sticky note closest to him. Jason nodded and stood, following Alfred out of the Batcave as Bruce looked to the rest of his family. “We have targets, we have details, Tim, dig up what you can on the GIW, Damian, Dick, Cass, Stephanie, your with me, we’re going to raid as many of these places as we can tonight, Barbara,”
“I’ve got comms, got it.” She interrupted, rolling over to the Bat computer and preparing for daylight operations

Can someone genuinely answer this ever lingering question as to why DC has such beef with Jason Todd?
They butcher his character and relationships, and for what? There’s so much fucking POTENTIAL not only with his character but with his story! There’s a way to actually write discourse in a relationship without making it so damn abusive. Maybe I’m missing something in the story or just in general, but it’s just so fucking irritating when it could be good.
You have a nice, good boy who only wants to help despite given the short hand in life who is then given a loving father who just so happens to be Batman. That boy is then murdered by Batman’s biggest enemy (don’t even get me started on the fucking Joker who essentially has become idolized in the worst ways by DC writers and directors) still trying to do the right thing despite being fucked over by the very person he so desperately wanted love from. Then, you have that same boy who’s just a little bit older, hurting and angry— acting out in every way he can against the man who loves him but couldn’t see past his own weaknesses. And what do DC writers do instead of making this complicated, intriguing and character growing relationship into something that’s not as fucking dumb and slightly out of character for Batman? They fuck him up.
It’s an extreme to say this, I know. And this isn’t against all DC writers, but you can’t deny a lie when it’s a pattern. It’s a cut and dry story that practically writes itself. You have a little boy who is so full of hope is growing along with the main character of the story (which, in my own personal opinion, Batman has Robin not as a soldiers—and omfg does that damn phrase make me violent—but as a potential, mutual factor of character growth) , who then gets a bit too cocky and distracted by his own hubris and need for love, to a hurt antagonist that goes against the man who he once called father. Like it’s too easy to not fuck this up, and yet DC seems to manages to do this every single time.
It’s almost like they want to portray Batman and Bruce Wayne as a man who is made “tougher” by his trauma (which has some patriarchal undertones if you catch my drift) instead of growing. Batman can grow. He can love. There’s one post that I’ve seen on Tumblr how Batman/Bruce does this whole vigilante thing out of love.
Which is why I don’t get why DC uses Bruce as a tool to hurt Jason when it isn’t really consistent. He loved Jason, and this is backed up by a lot of older and a few current issues. Don’t get me wrong, I get that their relationship post-UTRH is gonna be FUCKED. Yet, even the writing in that I can’t really agree with. KILLING (attempting to kill really) your son who had been dead for years, that you loved so much, and is acting out because YOU? Doesn’t make much sense, but, again, maybe I’m looking at this through a foggy lens.
This wasn’t meant to be a long post, but it’s just been on my mind and perhaps I could use another perspective. So, again, what’s DC’s deal with Jason and Bruce’s relationship, and Jason’s character as a whole?

"Murder is Werewolves" - Batman
I don't got the SPOONS to do this thought train justice, I have seriously been trying to write this thing for MONTHS so just, idk, have this half baked skeletal outline of the essay I guess:
I don't believe that Batman's no-kill rule is primarily about rehabilitation or second chances.
His refusal to believe that Cassandra could have killed someone when she was eight years old because "how could a killer understand my commitment not to kill" is absolute fucking MOON LOGIC from a rehabilitationist standpoint. No jury on the planet would think for even a second that she could reasonably be held accountable for her actions in that situation! Her past cannot condemn her to being incapable of valuing human life under a rehabilitation centering framework. However, Batman's reasoning makes perfect sense if he believes that killing is a spiritually/morally corrupting act which permanently and fundamentally changes a person, and that corruption can never be fully undone.
Dick Grayson killing the Joker is treated both narratively and by Batman as an unequivocally WIN for the Joker. The Joker won by turning Nightwing into a killer. Note that this is during a comic in which the Joker transforming people was a major theme! Batman didn't revive the Joker because the Joker deserved to live; he revived the Joker to lift the burden on Dick.
His appeal to Stephanie when she tried to kill her dad is that she shouldn't ruin her own life. He gives no defense of Cluemaster's actual life. Granted this is a rhetorical strategy moment and should be taken with a generous pinch of salt, but it fits in the pattern.
When Jason becomes a willful killer, he essentially disowns him, never treats him with full trust ever again, and... Well, we can stop here for Bruce's sake. Bottom line is that his actions towards Jason do not lead me to believe that he thinks Jason can become a better person without having his autonomy taken from him, either partially or fully.
The Joker is, for better or worse, the ultimate symbol and vessel of pure, irredeemable evil in DC comics now. He hasn't been just another crook in a long time. He will never get better, he will only get worse. If you take it to be true that the Joker will not or can not rehabilitate, then there's no rehabilitationist argument against killing him.
Batman does not seem to consider it a possibly that he'll rehabilitate. Batman at several points seems to think that the Joker dying in a manner no one could have prevented would be good. Yet Batman fully believes that if he killed the Joker, he himself would become irredeemable.
Batman's own form of justice (putting people into the hospital and then prison) is fucking brutal and clearly not rehabilitative. He disrespects the most basic human rights of all criminals on a regular basis. It is genuinely really, really weird from a rehabilitationist standpoint that his only uncrossable line is killing... But it makes perfect sense if he cares more about not corrupting himself with the act of killing than the actual ethical results of any individual decision to kill or not kill.
In the real world cops are all bastards because they are too violent to criminals, even when that violence doesn't lead to death. Prison is a wildly evil thing to do to another human being, and you don't use it to steal away massive portions of a person's life if your goal is to rehabilitate them. In the comic world, Batman is said to be necessary because the corrupt cops are too nice to criminals and keep letting them out of jail. I don't know how to write a connector sentence there so like I hope you can see why this bothers me so damn much! That's just not forgiveness vibes there Batman!!
I want to make special note here of the transformative aspect. You don't simply commit a single act when you kill, no, you become a killer, like you might become a werewolf.
The narrative supports this a lot!
Why did Supes go evil during Injustice? He killed the Joker. Why did Bruce become the Batman Who Laughs? Bruce killed the Joker. Why was Jason Todd close to becoming a new Joker during Three Jokers? Because he killed people, to include the Joker.
Even if these notions of redemption being impossible aren't the whole of his reasoning (people never have only one reason for doing what they do) it is a distinct through-line pattern in his actions and reasoning, and it is directly at odds with notions of rehabilitation, redemption, and second chances.
So why does he give so many killers second chances?
Firstly because this doesn't apply to all versions of Batman. Some writers explicitly incorporate rehabilitation and forgiveness into his actions. You will be able to provide me with examples of this other through-line pattern if you go looking for them. The nature of comics is to be inconsistent.
Secondly the existence of that other pattern does not negate the existence of this one. People and characters are complex, and perfectly capable of holding two patterns of belief within themselves, even when they conflict to this degree. You can absolutely synthesize these two ideas into a single messy Batman philosophical vibescape.
Finally and most importantly to this essay: he has mercy on killers the same way that werewolf hunters sometimes have mercy on someone who is clearly struggling against their monsterous nature, especially if they were turned in exceptional circumstances or against their will. They understand that they are sick, damned beasts, cursed to always be fighting against themselves and the evil they harbor within. It is vitally kind to help them fight themselves by curtailing their autonomy in helpful ways and providing them with chances to do some good to make up for their eternal moral deficiency.
I think in many comics Batman views killers as lost souls. Battered and tormented monsters who must be pitied and given mercy wherever possible. (The connections to mental health, addiction, and rampant, horrifying ableism towards people struggling with both is unavoidable, but addressing it is sadly outside of the scope of this essay.)
Above all, the greatest care possible must be taken to never, ever let yourself become one of them, because once you have transformed the beast will forever be within you growing stronger.
To Batman, it is the most noble burden, the highest mercy, the most important commandment: Thou shalt suffer the monsters to live.

I have personal beef with Lobdell's "hence the name, Red Hood" panel when Jason picks up that poor, abused dog in RH:O. Which logically I know is an off the cuff joke but 1. Lobdell likes to simplify Jason and his motives all the time (which he could’ve been doing here) 2. I’ve seen a lot of people say they don’t get why/the connection/deeper meaning/etc. Jason picked his name or 3. people who want Jason to drop RH & pick up a new vigilante identity without (or before) Jason getting his full circle closure
Tumblr media
(First: can Jason please have a companion again. And can they be given a real name this time? Not Lobdell’s lazy out? Give that man another dog or fuxk, let him pick up a cat that was abandoned in the rain. Please???)
anyway, main attraction:
Within that spread, Scott Lobdell wrote that Jason picked the name because he's awful at naming things and went with the most basic, obvious choice, Red Hood. This is an incredible disservice to why Jason chose to take his mantle specifically.
Imagine you're Batman, a fledgling vigilante who abides by a strict no-kill moral code. It's your first or so year manning the streets of a massive, corrupt city--Gotham--and you still aren't fully sure of what you're doing. The criminal underworld still isn't even convinced you're real. One of the first big cases you bust, a man who calls himself the Red Hood, dies. you play accomplice to the man falling into a vat of chemicals even as you try to save him. He dies. You killed a man due to your own mistakes.
But you didn't. Not really.
The man comes back under a new name--the Joker--and becomes one of your most prominent enemies. The guilt eats you alive. You dub him your greatest failure. The guilt complex and strengthened moral platitudes refuse to let him die, let alone kill the man. Only "saving him" will relieve you of the grief. Your guilt, your grief, God, your god complex, something is too big for you to admit you can't save everyone including the problems you inadvertently create.
You take in a boy, a ward--Dick Grayson--because the city won’t let a single bachelor like Brucie Wayne adopt him. You’re his brother, you’re his spandex-wearing partner, you’re not his father (he has a father, he doesn’t want you to be his father) but you’re also not not his father; it’s complicated. You didn't want him to turn into you and he creates his own mantle--Robin--to honor his parents.
You and him are partners for many years--Batman and Robin: The Dynamic Duo. Until, one day, The Joker shoots him in the shoulder and he falls off a building on live TV. The city’s populace is upheaved, believing Robin is dead. Demanding Batman be held responsible for his negligence, for even having a underaged partner in the first place. You agree. The field is no place for a child, you decide to keep him so. Robin, the child, is dead, killed by the Joker. Dick Grayson, now a man, is alive and blazing his own trail--Nightwing.
So one child-to-man moves on. And one stays behind. Weeks, months, pass and, you refuse to admit it, you're lonely.
You find another boy--Jason Todd (found in the same location and on the anniversary your parents were murdered in the part of town you only visit once a year)--stealing your tires. Not Bruce Wayne's tires. Batman's tires. He makes you laugh, audaciously so. He takes you down with a tire jack and, God, he’s fast and feisty. (He thought you were going to kill him. You don’t loiter on the thought: it makes your stomach turn). You track him down to retrieve your tires. He tells you he doesn't want to be a criminal, he takes what he needs to survive. He's starving.
You try to stay out of it (all you do is check what happened to his missing dad--murdered--and sick mom--heroin was what got her in the end). You push him towards education. He doesn't trust the cops. He doesn't trust the system. He doesn't trust adults. He hardly trusts you. He tells you about a case, that the school is bad, but believes you only half listen--brush him off like every other person in his life. You follow up. He follows up.
You ask him to be Robin. He accepts.
Later, you adopt him.
Dick's mad at you for giving away his title without asking, to a child nonetheless. (“You said the field was no place for a child!”) You snap at him, say you missed him. (You keep telling Gordan that Jason's no child. That he's seen too much, is more experienced than either of them combined. You don't say this to Dick).
He leaves but he gives Jason his number and his blessing. The kid's torn up about it, you can tell (see the doubt eat him alive of if he should be wearing those colors. Your butler? Your father?--Alfred--tells you to stop comparing the boys--good or not).
That doubt sticks with him. That past experience sticks with him. He urges you to help the poorer parts of the city, especially the places where Batman only visits once a year (The first time he goes back after getting Jason isn’t as bad as all the times before). He fights for his people. He’s tied to Gotham in ways you aren’t. Sees things you don’t. Knows things you don’t. People who can’t stand you, love him.
You keep hearing him crying over his dead mother and watch him lose it against rapists. He advocated for the woman that killed the man who murdered 12 women including her sister even though Batman and Robin aren’t supposed to endorse extra judicial work like that. He breaks a man’s collarbone for taking pictures of naked children. He thinks the “Dress-ups” won’t ever stop because Batman’s only weapon is fear and they aren’t afraid. He once said life’s a game. Monopoly, Bruce assumes he means.
Drugs are easier than rape to catch a man on, and the boy is furious that the perpetrator is only being sent back to his home country. ("he'll just hurt the women over there! He won't stop!" He's in hysterics).
A young woman is dead. The boy found her body. A man falls to his death a man is pushed to his death is dead. The boy was the last one to be with him. You bench him, but you forget that you asked him to be Robin first and a son second.
He runs away. A birth mom--Shelia Haywood, you eventually learn. He's missing. It has to wait. The Joker's out again. You have to prevent your greatest failure from becoming bigger. (He shot Barbara earlier this year)
You leave the boy with his birth mom by the warehouse. You have to go after the Joker. The Joker has killed and killed and killed. Will continue to kill. The boy is dead. He killed the boy. The mother says he was good. He's nothing more than broken bones and mangled limbs. She's...not.
Your greatest failure murdered your boy. His body’s already getting cold when you find hi—the body. The corpse. You hold it. Because it’s an it now, not a him.
You go after the Joker. The pilot is shot. You don't try to kill the Joker, but you don't bring him with you as you jump. The helicopter crashes. You don't even think he's dead; unresolved as per usual.
You failed to protect him. You failed. And he’s dead.
Superman pulls you from the ocean.
You go home and Alfred meets you once you get off the plane. He tells you it's not your fault, the boy had it coming. The murdered boy--a Good Solider, buried next to his bio-mother in Gotham Cemetery--is dubbed your new biggest failure.
Dick's in space and would miss the funeral, so you decide instead to not tell him there was a funeral at all. At least someone will still think Jason’s alive. At least someone will keep Jason alive through their belief. It’s not like Dick’ll find out. They weren’t that close anyway (Dick & Jason or you & him?)
When Dick does eventually find out, because of course he obviously does, he's furious. It's the first time you punch your first Robin. (You don't know it yet, but it won't be the last time, not for Dick and not for some other so-called family members.)
Robin is dead. Far deader than Dick Grayson ever was. He did it to himself. He thought it was a game. Dick doesn’t get it. He was better. He was alive.
(You can’t admit he’s become your son out loud. Hardly even in your head. It’s fine. Dick is the same about your fatherhood. Like father, like son)
You blame it on Jason's death. It changed you. He changed you. It's his fault. Everyone follows suit.
You leave the Joker in a body cast for six months. He gets out again. Luckily you have a new Robin--Tim Drake. He's not Jason. You can see it in his eyes that he knows that's a good thing. Gotham doesn’t even know the second one is dead. They believe Tim’s second one. Gordan even asked if he’s finally hit his growth spurt. 4’6 the death certificate said. That’s okay. No one needs to knows.
(Park Row Crime Alley knows. They know who’s theirs and who isn’t. Batman and Robin aren’t welcomed down there anymore)
(The first anniversary you visit your parents yours and his first meeting spot after Jason’s death feels like Ethiopia all over again)
A blonde girl is Robin now--Stephanie Brown. You tell her she's like Jason. She can tell you mean it as a bad thing but never processes it through her mind. You're trying to lure Tim back. A city-wide gang war wrecks Gotham. She's dead. Tortured by Black Mask and died on the operation table.
There's talk around the underworld, unified under Black Mask, a new gang leader's been making waves for months. You just heard about him tonight (a duffle bag full of heads told you): The Red Hood. You know that name. It’s a punch to the gut. Your first failure.
(“You’re getting slow, old man!)
He did what you've been trying to do for years in a matter of weeks: He overtook the entire Gotham underworld. He’s running circles around everyone. He pits you against the underground, keeps you busy, and he gets what he needs to be done Scot-Free. You hardly ever see him around. Only when he wants you to see him, do you. You don’t like things you aren’t in control of.
He doesn't want anyone dealing to kids. He likes bombs, but they're contained. Implosions, not explosions. He kills and is on par with Batman himself (he cut himself free of your line). Red Hood hangs around Crime Alley ("Park Row!" Jason would always respond), but no one there will rat him out to The Batman. They won't talk to you. Some of them even seem to...like having the Red Hood around.
He’s managed to bring down the crime rate of the entire city. Somehow.
It's raining. You can't tell. Jason's alive.
Jason's. Alive.
Jason'salivejason'salivejason'salivejason'salivejason'saliveason'salivejason'sal--
Jason's alive.
And he's killing people. And he's spitting in the face of your "sanctimonious" moral code. He laughed at you when he murdered someone in front of you. ("Just be happy I only killed the Nazi!") You tell him he doesn't get it. He responds the same.
(“You can't stop crime," he says along the lines of "Not with fear. But me...I'm controlling it.")
Jason's never had enough fear.
And now he's crying with a gun to his murderer's head. He says he’s not talking about the other rogues, just him. Just the Joker. He throws you a gun. You won't do it--can't do it. You need to save the Joker. To prove that you can. You need to save Jason. To show him this isn't the way. You can't have any more failures.
(“He took me from you!”)
Jason's going to do it himself, he says. "If you want to stop me, you're going to have to shoot me. Right in the face."
You can't let anyone die. You can't let the Joker die. It's your mission. There's so much blood. The batarang had to have had to knick the carotid artery in his neck. No one could survive it. The Joker is cackling with glee. You hear it in the walls of your skull. The bomb goes off. You don’t hear that at all.
Oh God. You killed your so—
You’re still gone, you think
You see Jason on patrol sometimes. High collar and still branding himself as Red Hood. There’s a red bat on his chest now. You don’t think it’s a compliment. The East End loves him. Jason still can't let the Joker go. Can’t—won’t move on.
Not till he's dead he says.
Take a moment to imagine yourself as a fledgling vigilante--Batman.
— — —
Anyway my meta turned into a 2nd POV fic????? but like that's not the point. The point is: That’s the impact of why Jason chose the name he did. It’s important to me that you all recognize these full-circle story beats. Do you see my vision?
Jason planned everything when he made his big debut. You don't think that dramatic-ass bastard thought about the name? Jason is mocking Bruce: both his fears and failures as a vigilante.
But that throwaway line is one of those really minor details that really bug me because it's so easy to throw out a panel and say “Jason's bad at naming things Haha" It's much harder to commit to "show, not tell" where writers have to trust their readers to get between the lines and figure out long-term connections.
As well as it's just another way Lobdell undermines Jason's goals in UtRH by saying "He couldn't think of anything else" compared to Winick's Jason who is laughing and mocking Bruce by taking up the mantle of Red Hood. Showing he's not afraid of what happened to him. Spitting in the face of the world that burned him and yelling “I’m still here!” Owning it. He's not afraid of Bruce. And he's definitely not afraid of the Joker.
I want Jason to get a new identity one day too but to do so before Jason ever gets his joker closure cuts his story short. (Which is a creative way of saying it’s never gonna happen unfortunately). I think if he gets one before he finishes the story and closes the cycle, it would be the final nail in the “Jason’s a batfamily member” coffin as it would probably be written as “Jason seeing the error of his ways” rather than for himself moving on to heal for himself.

Red Hood Characterization
This is really long so I'm putting a cut here, I've been thinking about Jason Todd's character motivations and the question of whether or not his actions are based in a Moral Code (I don't think so, not to say he's without any morality) and I talk about that in more depth here.
I saw someone say on here that Titans: Beast World: Gotham City was some of the best Jason Todd internal writing they'd seen in a while, and I've been a Red Hood fan for 8 years or so now? pretty much since I read comics for the first time, so I went and checked out and I thought it was good! The way the person I saw talking about it as if it was rare and unusual made me wonder though, because as well-written as i thought his stances on crime were, there wasn't really anything in it that went against the way I conceptualize Jason?
This kinda plays into a larger question I've been thinking about for a while with Jason though, which is that, do people think that the killing is part of a fundamental worldview that motivates him a la batman, and that worldview is the reason he does the things he does?? Because 8 years ago i was a middle schooler engaging with fiction on the level that a middle schooler does, so I simply did not put much thought into it beyond "poor guy :(" but ever since I actually started trying to understand consistent characterization, I don't really see Jason as someone who's motivated by a moral code in his actions the way batman or superman is!
tbh my personal read is that he's a very socially-motivated guy, his actions from resurrection to his Joker-Batman ultimatum in utrh always seemed to me like every choice made leading up to his identity reveal was either a. to give him the leverage and skill necessary to pull off his identity reveal successfully, or b. to twist the knife that little bit more when he does let Bruce find out who he is. Like iirc there's a Judd Winick tweet like "yeah tldr he chose Red Hood as his identity because it's the lowest blow he could think of." And I think that's awesome, I think character motivations rooted so deeply in character's relationships and emotions are really fun to read! I also think it's where the stagnation/flatness of his character comes from in certain comics, because if his main motivation is one event in one relationship that passes, and he is not particularly attached to anything in his life or the world by the time that comes to pass, it's a little harder to come up with a direction to go with the character after that, because there isn't much of a direction that aligns with something the character would reasonably want? But I do think solving this by saying "all of the morally-off emotionally driven cruelty he did on his way to spite Batman was actually reflective of his own version of Batman's stance that's exactly the same except he thinks it's GOOD to kill people" isn't ideal. To be fully honest, it seems to me like he never particularly cared one way or the other about killing people to "clean Gotham of crime," he just did everything he could to get the power necessary to pull off his personal plans, and took out any particularly heinous people he encountered along the way (like in Lost Days.) Not to say I think the fact he killed people keeps him up at night anymore than everything else in his life events, I just never really thought he was out there wholeheartedly kneecapping some dude selling weed or random guy robbing a tv store for justice.
Looping wayyy back to my question, Is this (^) contradictory to the way he's written/the overall average perception of the character? Because like I enjoyed his writing in Beast World i have zero significant issue with anything there, I just didn't believe it would be a hot take, like yeah, that is Jason. It's been a while since I've read utrh and lost days, but I don't think my takeaway directly contradicts either of those too bad iirc. Idk all this to say I think Jason killing and being alright with killing is an obvious and objective fact, but i guess i've always seen it as more of a practical tactic than a moral belief, and I think taking the actions made during the lowest points of a character's life where he is obsessively focused on this ONEEEE thing and trying to apply it as a Motivating Stance to everything he's done after that, doesn't really follow logically for me.
#edit: i am so so open to discussion and disagreement on this but please try to have something substantial to say. god bless!#like ofc jason kills but to me it was less “everyone I've ever killed deserves death objectively”#and more “when people are dead they stop doing things like heinous atrocities and trying to kill me"#i don't even think he wanted the joker dead (only) because he thinks he objectively morally deserves death#although the joker is one of the most extreme cases possible and he if does think that he's VERY justified#i really do think it was just about bruce#and wanting bruce to avenge him to show he loved him and he mattered and wanting his dad to give him security#all the killing was about the clown and everything with the clown was about bruce#i've NEVER forgotten the bit in lost days where he has the joker tied up at gunpoint and doesn't kill him#i think if it was only about a moral greater good situation he would have taken him out then and there#if you disagree i'd love to hear why provided you can be civil and not an jerk#also if you disagree PLEASE PLEASE put screenshots and comic issues if possible#i'd love to check them out and form my own stance on them#just know that if you say like. battle for the cowl. or the Tom King batman annual or something i probably won't care too much#comic characterization is ever-changing and inconsistent i truly believe that the best thing to do is just read the important stuff#and try to form your own stances from there#because there's never gonna be 100% of comics involving a character that align with each other perfectly and that's just a given#jason todd#red hood#dc comics

Having a Homer Simpson "d'oh!" moment because I missed/forgot some pivotal information on the Zur situation that happened a few issues ago.
Zur created Failsafe and erased the memory of how to stop him. He also created a batcave under Bruce's batcave. (Batman #127 / Batman #136)
Bruce literally mentioned that Zur "poisoned the well" and put doubt in Bruce's head and heart. Bruce questioned, "What else has he done?" (Batman #136)
Bruce locked Zur away in his mind, and they were at odds with each other because Bruce didn't want Zur taking over, and Zur wanted out because he perceived Bruce's insecurities and doubts as his mind being "under attack." He wanted out to fulfill his purpose. (Batman #136)
In a flashback, Zur took over Bruce's body without Bruce even knowing. One minute, Bruce was trying to solve a case, and in the next, Zur was doing his own thing. When he gave up control to Bruce again, Bruce simply carried on with his previous thought as if he hadn't been personality swapped at all. (Batman #136)
Zur tried to tell Bruce what to do. Bruce snapped and yelled at him, reminding Zur that he (Zur) was in a cage. Bruce reassured himself, "He's in a cage. I'm in control." (Batman #137)
Now there was a moment in Batman #136 where Bruce started to panic because he couldn't see the future or whatever, so he didn't know how he could save everyone he loved, and he wondered how far he could go before it all burned away.
And then in Batman #137/Catwoman #57, Bruce realized that he no longer owned the manor, and he kinda started spiraling and talking about how even if he lost the manor/his wealth, he wouldn't lose his soldiers.
"They can't be bought. But they can be saved."
Notice the fact that Bruce used the term "soldiers." Because guess what? In Batman #127, Zur referred to Tim and the other members of the family as soldiers, and Bruce angrily corrected him.
"And Tim isn't my soldier! HE'S MY SON!"
SOOO. Do you see where I'm kinda going with all this? Bruce not knowing when Zur takes over? Zur being able to erase memories? Zur using "soldier" in his own dialogue color, and Bruce using the term "soldier" in his own dialogue color? Bruce saying that Zur "poisoned the well."
AND NOW, in today's issue, Zur forcibly took over to try and kill Joker again. And you know what was said?
Bruce: No! I'm in control! I'm--
Zur: You're not in control, we (Zur) are.
BRUCE CANNOT CONTROL ZUR. HE CANNOT. He thinks he can, and he thought he had it under control, but Bruce doesn't have shit under control!

This Unruly Mess I've Made - Jason Todd
Tumblr media
Pairing: Jason Todd x gn! reader
Genre: angst, hurt/comfort
Word Count: 1.5k
Summary: in your mind, Jason Todd and the Red Hood are entirely different people, but when he comes over after patrol one night, the lines start to blur
CW: angst, violence, yelling, fighting, Jason snaps at reader, allusion to panic attack (reader has one), big brother Dick getting way too involved, Jason losing it a bit (his own Joker moment), groveling, some hurt/comfort
the other half of the Batboys request! writing Jason's part was a lot easier for me than writing Dick's part but I struggled a little with making this angsty ngl. hope you enjoy!
Dick Version
————
In your mind, Jason Todd and Red Hood are not the same person. While Hood is aggressive, merciless on the criminals he fights, occasionally without morals, Jason is an entirely different creature. He’s cocky, and he shares some of Hood’s standoffishness, but he’s also gentle. He loves books. He’s good with his words.
Your boyfriend and his vigilante alter ego could not be any different in your mind, and Jason wants to keep it that way.
He’s always drawn the line between his life with you and his life as Red Hood, trying to keep the darkest parts of his life from seeping into yours. Still, there are times the cracks show.
Times like tonight.
He’s pumped up on adrenaline, fists still broken and bloody from the fight he was just in. Looking down on the crumpled body of the man below him, he knows he went too far. Even for him.
“Jesus, Hood,” Grayson’s voice sounds far away even though he’s just behind him.
Jason can only shake his head, clenching his jaw even tighter. He can feel things bubbling over, a tightness in his chest that he hates.
He needs calm, he needs warmth, he needs you. It’s the dead of night by the time he’s knocking at your door impatiently, still dressed as Red Hood, blood still speckling his leather jacket.
You open the door with tired eyes, a blanket wrapped around your shoulders. “Jay?”
He tugs the helmet over his head, sweaty, dark hair falling in his face. Something is different about him tonight, you realise. It’s not just the way his blue eyes have been drowned in black, or the way he’s painfully tense. It’s like his demeanour as a whole has changed.
It isn’t Jason Todd standing in front of you—it’s Red Hood.
He steps into your apartment, slamming the door behind him so hard the whole door frame shakes. He doesn’t turn around and awkwardly hold out his hands as an apology to the door like he usually does—yet another indicator that something is seriously wrong.
“W-what’s going on?” You hate the way your voice shakes, and even though you want to say you’re not afraid, you can’t. You are afraid.
His voice is low and gravelly, not unlike Batman’s. “Just…rough night.”
You nod, pursing your lips while you fill up the tea kettle and set it on the stove. It’ll take a few minutes to warm up, and in the meantime, you hope you can talk him down from his ledge.
“Did something happen on patrol?”
“Yes.”
His response makes you scrunch up your nose. It’s so dry, so…unlike Jason. And his voice. He sounds angry. Angry with you, angry with the world.
“What happened?”
He doesn’t respond. You can see his shoulders tensing, see the annoyance on his face. But what right does he have to be annoyed with you? He’s the one who showed up here in the middle of the night, dressed like a damn vigilante and covered in blood.
“Jason?”
He slams his fist on the kitchen counter, a chunk of the tile cracking. “Dammit, y/n! Can you stop asking fucking questions for five minutes?”
His sudden outburst has you flinching, drawing your body further away from him. Never, never in your life, has Jason ever spoken to you like that. But this isn’t Jason.
Jason is equally stunned at his outburst, but he doesn’t care. The adrenaline is pumping and why do you have to ask so many questions anyway? Can’t you just let him sit and think for a minute?
He growls at the thought. “I just want some damn peace and quiet, is that too much to ask?”
The sound of the cracking tile is echoing in your ears, the room filling up with Jason’s angry voice and the kettle boiling and your own thoughts. Everything is overwhelming, everything is just too much right now. You squeeze your eyes shut, willing it all to go away.
Jason keeps talking, digging the knife even deeper.
Finally, you snap. “Jason,” your voice is calm but your heart is racing, “get out.”
He stops mid sentence. “What?”
“I said: Get out!”
You expect him to oblige, or to argue. To do anything except what he actually does. Because when you say get out, Jason starts laughing. Loud, mocking laughter.
You scrunch your eyebrows together, staring at him in confusion. He steps around the counter, coming closer to you. You step back, extending your hand to keep some distance between you.
Jason doesn’t care. He keeps coming towards you.
“Get the fuck out, Jason. I mean it.”
He cocks his head to the side, “yeah? What are you going to do if I don’t?”
His words make you sick. A pit forming in your stomach, twisting into something nauseating.
“Get out,” you breathe, shoving your hand into his chest to push him back, “or I’ll call Dick.”
At the mention of his brother, Jason’s eyes go wide. He’s not sure what he thought before, why he was being so cruel, but the thought that you’re so scared you’d call his brother has him realizing how far this has gone.
“I mean it, Jason. Go!”
Your voice is so small, so broken. The sight of you makes his heart hurt. How could he be so cruel to someone he loves so much? Why does he have to fuck everything up? He wants to hold you, he wants to apologize, but you’re shaking so much and your eyes are glassy and he knows he’ll just ruin things more.
He turns on his heel and leaves your apartment, slamming the door behind him.
You rush to lock it. Your knees buckle and you slide down the door, the tears finally coming out. As much as you love Jason, you really fucking hate Red Hood.
It takes a while after Jason leaves for you to gather your composure. Your hands still shake and your cheeks are still slick with tears, but you force yourself to stand and remove the kettle from the stove. You manage to pour yourself a glass of hot water and toss a tea bag into the mug before reaching for your phone.
You click on Dick’s contact and start to type a text.
Keep Jason the fuck away from me.
Dick is more than surprised to receive your text. You barely message him as it is, but the tone in the text is way different than usual. All he can think is: what did Jason get himself into this time?
He’s bursting through his brother’s door within a minute of your text, finding the man hunched over on his bed with his head in his hands.
“What did you do?”
Jason looks up, eyes bloodshot and sore. “Fuck off, Grayson.”
“I will,” he nods, “when you tell me why y/n asked me to keep you separated.”
“Y/n asked you that?”
Dick raises an eyebrow, prompting him for an answer. Jason can only sigh, forcing himself into his feet, still clad in his uniform from last night.
“I-I wasn’t thinking straight…I went over there right after that last fight and-and I started yelling. Y/n asked me to leave and I fucking laughed like it was some kind of joke.”
“Jesus,” Dick mumbles.
“I-I didn’t realize how bad it was until I really looked and saw how fucking terrified y/n was of me.”
“And then you left, right?”
Jason says nothing.
Dick presses. “Right?”
“Only after y/n threatened to call you.” Jason’s face burns with shame and anger and regret, and he just wants to hit something right now.
“You fucked up, Jason.”
“Don’t you think I know that, Dick?!” He snaps. “Y/n will never forgive me for this. I ruined the only good thing I ever had.”
As much as he wants to berate his brother for his actions and tell him how much of an idiot he is, Dick can’t stand to see him like this. It’s true that the only good thing Jason has ever had to himself was you, and Dick knows that losing you could send him spiraling worse than ever before.
He sets a gentle hand on his shoulder. “Come on, take a shower and get dressed. Meet me in the car in 5.”
“Where are we going?”
“To see y/n. You’re going to make this right, okay?”
“Dude,” he tugs on his hair, “y/n’s not going to want to see me again.”
“That’s why I’m coming. I’ll be a buffer, and maybe things will be less scary for both of you.”
Jason groans. He hates when Dick’s right.
You’re hardly surprised when Dick shows up at your doorstep, Jason in tow. “Can we come in?” Dick asks.
You unlock the door, slowly moving it open. “Both of you?”
“If you’ll have us.”
You let the door swing open, gesturing for them to come in. Your heart is beating hard in your chest, the sight of Jason after last night only making the pain fresh again. Still, seeing him makes your heart flutter.
They settle in on your couch and you sit on the plush chair across from them. You fold your hands, bringing your knees in. “So, what brings you guys here?”
Dick says nothing, only nudging Jason in the ribs with his elbow. Jason squeezes his eyes shut before opening them again, braving a glance at you.
“Y/n,” Jason’s voice cracks, but he keeps his tone soft and gentle, “I am so, so sorry.”
You stare at him, picking out the streaks of grey in his hair and the dark bags under his eyes.
“I was such a jerk last night, I was so disrespectful to you and your wishes and-and I can’t imagine how scared you were.”
You swallow hard, looking at Dick for guidance. He looks back, eyes full of concern.
“I never want you to be afraid of me. I never want to see you like that again. And I-I understand if that involves never seeing me again.”
The thought of never seeing him again, of never having him wrapping you in his arms and reading to you again, has you choking on the lump in your throat. Tears slip out of your eyes, trailing down your cheeks.
“I-I don’t want that all,” you whimper.
Jason’s eyes light up for only a second. “You-you want to keep seeing me?”
You shake your head slowly. “I love you, Jason, and even if you were an asshole, I still do. I don’t want—I don’t want you to leave me.”
You’re full on crying now, tears rolling down your cheeks.
Jason approaches you slowly, giving you time to back away if you want to. You stay put, watching every step he takes to get closer to you. Finally, he closes the gap between you and pulls you into his arms.
His large frame envelops you, strong arms holding you tight to his body. He kisses the top of your head, stroking your hair. He murmurs into your ear, reminding you how much he loves you and how he’ll never hurt you and how he would do anything for you.
Dick watches awkwardly from the couch, wondering if either of you will notice (or care) if he decides to slip away.

Yandere joker x hero reader like reader used to work for the Justice League with Batman
Sure! The version of Joker is kept general. Heavily implied to be from the general comics, though. I haven't written for Joker in years so I hope he's in character :)
Yandere! Joker with Hero! Darling
Pairing: Romantic
Possible Trigger Warnings: Gender-Neutral Darling, Sadism, Torture mention, Unstable mental health, Manipulation, Blackmail, Obsession, Delusional behavior, Kidnapping mention, Jealousy, Murder mention, Vague "relationship".
Tumblr media
It's hard to get a proper personality for Joker when writing his character, as he is described as "unpredictable".
If you were a hero that used to work for the Justice League alongside Batman, he takes sadistic joy in this.
You knew Bats!? Well, then you'll get along just fine!
He's probably going to hunt you down as you know his pal so well.
Finding peace after retiring from hero work, or even being a hero still is nearly impossible.
No, now you're going to have to deal with the plague known as Joker.
He gets so upset when you contact Batman about him.
Him coming to see you is supposed to be private!
He probably met you when you helped Batman capture him once.
You're not like those Robins he carries around.
No, you're much more fun!
It's then that the Joker sets his sights on you.
You'll be trying to do your own thing and the clown prince himself barges in like he knows you personally.
"Hey there, doll! Mind if I join you?"
He usually addresses you by some sort of nickname based on your alias and makes himself at home wherever.
He becomes more and more troublesome as time goes on.
You already saw him as a threat, the feeling intensifying whenever he tries to physically touch you.
He makes it a goal to become closer and invade your privacy and mind.
His laugh echoes in your ears and you find him an annoyance.
You're very confused as to why he's so friendly with you.
Batman shares the same confusion.
You have an effect on him.
Joker comments with disappointment that whenever you call Batman for help, it's as if you're treating Bats as his babysitter.
"Come on, dear! We're all adults here aren't we? Why can't we have any fun without a supervisor?"
He will soon get tired of you crying to Batman when he's around.
It's best not to flare his temper.
Joker would find a lot of joy in playing around with a hero! darling.
You are great to use as leverage against Batman and he loves the idea of tainting your mind.
Joker would kidnap you and he'd kill for you, when he will is unknown.
The entirety of the clown prince is a game of chance.
He's nearly impossible to read and is a bomb waiting to explode when around you.
There's no doubt he gets jealous of other heroes or civilians around you.
Which leads to murder... that part is somewhat predictable.
He'd hurt you and find it funny.
He seems like the type to toy with his darling.
Although, he probably has a soft spot for you
He knows he can't kill you, no, he needs you.
Instead he relishes in the idea of tormenting you and making you rely on him.
Although, that isn't always his motive.
Joker does like your smile and laugh....
A pleasant sound and a sight for sore eyes.
A delightful counterpart to his haunting laugh and grin.
The Joker has a soft spot for you which can be used, both for and against you.
You can lure him in for capture.
That or the Joker can make how he feels about you known to blackmail you.
If you don't play his game many could get hurt.
You're too soft to want that, right?
He'd break into your home easily, just to greet you with a playful yet deranged smile.
"Looks so boring in here... how about some company?"
He probably likes to feel your touch.
He's insane but he'd probably be touchstarved.
He's seen crying in the comics on the laps of flings or Harley so he's clearly unstable.
He'd do the same to you with no warning.
Joker likes the idea of playing with a hero's emotions and bringing them to their knees.
But he also genuinely craves your affection.
To you, Joker is a disease.
He plagues Gotham and should be Batman's problem.
So why did you have to be wrapped up in the clown prince problem?
The Joker is a parasite to you, clinging to you and refusing to let go.
You're cursed with him and soon... no one will be able to help you.
"Why so quiet? Come on, where's that laugh? Don't be such a downer like Bats, dear... he's such a bore!"

When did your mind start playing tricks on you? Did you hallucinate the entire conversation or just bits and pieces? When did it all go horribly wrong?
Your head was pounding and you didn't remember a thing after Bruce stepped closer to you.
When your back hit the balcony railing, it set off a trigger that made you instantly disassociate. You didn't hear Bruce's smooth voice after that as it was replaced with another from your past— one that you tried so hard to forget. It was sickly sweet and made you feel dirty inside and out.
Words and phrases were twisted around until you didn't know what to believe anymore. The background changed from your rooftop balcony to that damp and dark alleyway and that's when you knew nothing beyond this point was real.
Deep down you knew Bruce would never be this cruel but you couldn't be too sure. He was a gentleman... this wasn't real, but your mind made it seem very realistic.
Your memories from that night were back and you couldn't bear to relive it again.
'It's not real.' You repeated over and over as your mind spiraled out of control.
Tumblr media
Bruce noticed you were shivering and covered your shoulders with a heavy blanket. He sighed when you tensed up and wrapped the fabric around yourself like a shield. You were so jumpy lately, it really had him concerned.
He didn't understand why you were so distant towards him. Bruce could be the bigger person here and ask why despite the awkward tension festering between the two of you.
"How do I say this? You've been distant lately. Especially to me." He said. He wasn't expecting your timid voice to respond so quickly.
"Uh.. yeah? I hope so since I broke things off with you and if you haven't noticed over dinner— I've moved on. You're the one that keeps being nice and trying to get along with my parents.."
Bruce strained to hear what else you said under your breath but he caught your eyes blinking a mile a minute. That was unusual.
"Y/n, are you alright?" He asked.
"Yeah." You said without missing a beat.
He frowned and stepped closer, causing you to back away and hit the balcony railing with your hip. You slurred more of your words together.
"Are you sure? You look unwell, Y/n. Perhaps we should get you inside."
You were mumbling under your breath but Bruce couldn't hear a word. He knew something was wrong when you held your head and started hyperventilating. Then it hit him. You were having a panic attack.
His Batman instincts immediately kicked in.
"Breathe in and out, Y/n. Whatever it is, it's not real. Can you hear me? Y/n?" You avoided his touch but Bruce was persistent in trying to calm you down.
"Whatever is hurting you Y/n, please let me inand—"
Bruce never heard a scream as blood curdling as yours.
It's like he said the magic words and triggered old memories, for you immediately began fighting his hold, kicking and screaming with all your might. Bruce was a strong individual, with or without the bat suit, but he struggled trying to keep you still. You were too close to the balcony ledge for his liking so he corralled you back towards the apartment to keep you safe.
Everyone in the penthouse heard your horrified scream and woke up out of their slumber to investigate.
Your mom and dad were unfortunately veterans to this and knew exactly what was going on so they rushed straight to the scene.
Barbara, Morgana, and Dick however stumbled out of their rooms and followed the commotion out onto the balcony, not truly understanding what was going on in.
They all arrived to witness you screaming at the top of your lungs and clawing at Bruce's arms like a feral cat. He was trying to calm you down but the scene looked rather odd without any context.
Your parents would walk in while the two of you were in a suggestive position.
Bruce did a double take at the shocked audience and shouted, "Don't just stand there, help me!" You resorted to biting him and he almost lost his grip on you again if not for his leg pinning you down.
Your mother panicked seeing you in a fit of hysterics and she couldn't blame you. You were being manhandled during such a delicate situation.
"Let go of her!" She rushed to Bruce's side and snatched you out of his hold.
The second you felt a female presence, you stopped fighting back but continued to cry uncontrollably.
Your father slid to your side but kept his distance as to not set you off again. He felt useless not being able to help in your time of need yet your mother quickly stepped up to the plate in his stead.
"It's okay sweetheart. It's over, it's over. He's gone. You're safe now. It's all over." Your mother shushed in your ear. She rocked you like a baby as you choked back tears.
"P-Please stop! It hurts!" You wailed. Your mother blinked back her own tears while rubbing your back in big comforting circles. Your father met her gaze as they held a private conversation.
It's happening again.
"It's not real, Y/n. You're safe now." Mom glanced at Bruce's bloody arms and winced. "Babe, can you go find the first aid kit for Bruce?" She whispered to your dad so you wouldn't hear.
Everyone's eyes focused on the angry red claw marks your nails left on Bruce. Just what happened here? Your father grimaced at the bite mark but stood up to make himself useful.
You pleaded again, trapped in a distant memory and Morgana choked back a sob hearing her friend in so much pain.
It was too much to witness and she turned away to cry. Dick stood off to the side, oddly quiet, but concerned for his sister. Everyone was.
Barbara couldn't stand the silence and cried out, "What happened Bruce?"
Multiple curious eyes watched the billionaire rub the back of his head. Your father came back with the first aid kit and started accessing the damage you left. "She's still a fighter (mother's name). I bet these hurt like a mf, lemme see."
Bruce had suffered worse injuries but your nails were rather sharp so he let your father dab alcohol on each scratch to flush out the blood. Bruce had yet to answer the question on everyone's mind.
Your mother looked Bruce dead in the eye and arched an eyebrow. He thought he was gonna get the scolding of a lifetime at the intense e/c staring him down.
He started from the top and explained.
"I genuinely do not know. It's chilly out so I came to offer Y/n a blanket. I tried striking up a conversation about what happened over dinner but she started blinking excessively and clutching her head as if she had a headache. Her back hit the railing and I think she began to have a panic attack. When I tried to calm her down, she became combative."
You whimpered in your mother's arms as you finally fell asleep. She sighed in relief and swapped places with your dad.
She knew he felt useless and he gladly held you close now that you were unconscious and unaware of a male's touch. Your mom waved Bruce over and set about applying Neosporin to his scratches.
They were rather deep but they would heal in a few days time. He declined bandaids and she snapped the first aid kit closed and spoke.
"Don't blame yourself for this. Y/n had a very stressful day and her mind isn't functioning properly because of it."
"That doesn't explain what happened? Is Y/n okay?!" Morgana returned to the conversation with tear tracks still visible on her face.
She never seen you so distraught before. It was like a completely different person possessed your body just then. What kind of friend was she to not notice how much pain you were hiding? She wasn't any better than Florence.
Barbara was thinking the exact same thing. You needed solid friends right now and she was the worst one imaginable.
Your mother took a look around and sighed at the somber air on the balcony. She was emotionally drained after consoling you and it appeared that everyone else was drained as well.
"I think it's time to address the elephant in the room." She sighed. Your father shared a look with his wife. "You think Y/n will like that?"
Mom rolled her neck and snapped.
"D__n it, (father's name)! These are her friends! This episode clearly shows she's been suffering alone! They can help if they know what's going on! She can't keep bottling this up forever; it's killing her. Do you like seeing her like this? Reliving that night every time she's touched the wrong way or backed into a corner?"
Your father bit out his reply. "Of course I don't! But when Y/n wakes up and sees everyone eyeing her in pity, she'll recluse herself again. It's why she moved in the first place. Not everybody heals the way y'all doctors assume people should!"
Dick sighed and stepped in between the feuding couple. This could go on all night if someone didn't stop them.
They both eyed Dick, wondering what the charismatic boy was fixing to say.
"Unofficial, but official, adopted parents please. Go get Y/n situated then meet us back in the living room." Dick didn't wait for them to respond, he just asked Morgana and Bruce to follow him inside as he helped Barbara's wheelchair get over the balcony's sliding door hump.
Your parents didn't dispute his request. They got you settled in bed before coming back out into the living room with no further arguments.
Your friends were gathered around your living room in various stages of alertness. Dick handed out drinks to go with the sweets Barbara baked earlier.
After being woken up so abruptly, sugar was vital to stay awake.
Exhaustion was all around but this was an important meeting that was about to transpire. Not a second could be missed.
Your dad sat down with a sigh and pulled your mother into his lap.
They finally looked their age as they gathered their thoughts to begin. The air in the room was heavy for the next hour and a half as they explained everything to your closest friends.
What they had to say was absolutely horrifying.
Tumblr media
"You sure you'll be alright dear?" Your mother asked.
She stood in the foyer as Dick and her husband loaded the car downstairs with leftovers early Friday morning.
The morning came with hushed trepidation but the crew was forced to eat breakfast without you.
You had slept on through the night without any other episodes and your mother didn't anticipate for you to wake up until late this afternoon.
Her and your father had to head back to Blüdhaven and Dick offered to drive them so they didn't have to catch a train. Bruce had to head into the office for board meetings and after apologizing to your parents, (your mother assured the billionaire that this wasn't his fault) he left with the promise that he would check on you later today.
Barbara wanted to stick around but she had to return to work herself which left Morgana volunteering to stay at your penthouse to take care of you.
The perks of being your own boss, she joked. 'You make your own hours.'
Morgana smiled at your mother and nodded.
"Yes ma'am, I'll be alright. Dick showed me around so I got a feel of the place. Leftovers are in the fridge so if she wakes up, I'll make sure she eats and provide her lots of emotional support. You told me what to do if she... that happens again." Morgana scratched her cheek, still processing all that was discussed last night. Or rather this morning.
Bruce, Barbara, Dick, and Morgana saw you in a new light after your parents revealed your dark past and they each swore not to cast a shred of pity on you.
You needed them more than you let on.
Barbara and Morgana were beside themselves hearing about your past and they felt awful for almost ruining a friendship over a silly rumor Florence hatched up. That was the least of their concerns right now. Getting you back in high spirits was the only priority.
Morgana called her employees and asked them to deliver a crate of assorted flowers to your apartment building.
You loved her creations so she would surprise you with a giant bouquet for your apartment. It was a tiny gesture in the grand scheme of things but Morgana was willing to do anything to make you happy after last night.
Flowers could liven up the place and ward off bad spirits. She made a mental note to water your sunroom plants while she was here.
"Well dear, you have my number if you need me." Your mother hugged Morgana right as Dick came through the door saying they were ready to go. "You take good care of my baby! We'll be back in a few more weeks." She said.
"Call me if you have a question, Morgana!" Dick offered to the florist.
Morgana waved them both off and closed the door after more pleasantries were exchanged.
Your parents were super cool. Morgana was lucky to have met them even despite the terrible circumstances. She sighed to herself and thought aloud. "What a day.. and it just started."
She had the place to herself until you woke up so she went about accessing the state of your household plants.
They looked a little worse for wear and could stand a special treatment.
The day trickled on and Morgana spent the majority of it working on the lush floral display her employees dropped off at your place. She twisted exotic and local flowers into a gorgeous statement piece but something was missing.
Morgana was wracking her head around exactly what when she swore she heard your bedroom door close.
"Y/n?"
She looked towards the hallway but didn't see anything. A glance at the clock set the day around one in the afternoon.
Your mother was right about you sleeping in. It meant this happened numerous times in the past for her to have a predetermined schedule.
Morgana shivered. How long have you suffered like this?
She saw a blanket-clad figure float down the hallway and set a pink rose down to follow you.
"Y/n are you..." You slammed the door shut right in her face.
Morgana stuttered in shock but pushed it back open only to watch you crawl under the covers. This was so unlike you. "Y/n are you hungry?" She asked hesitantly.
You shifted under the covers away from Morgana's gentle voice.
Your mom warned her that you'd be antisocial for the next twenty-four hours but urged the florist to get some food and water in you. You lost a lot of fluids from crying last night and needed to replenish yourself or risk getting sick.
Morgana sighed at your lack of response but left to fix you a simple plate of food to eat with some water. You were still a hermit when she returned to the bedroom. You were gonna make this babysitting thing difficult.
Morgana sat the glass of water down on the nightstand should you wake up thirsty.
"I left some water and a plate of food if you feel up to it, Y/n." She said.
You remained buried under covers with no plans of returning to the real world. Dick had invaded Joker's room and erased the comforting scent of lighter fluid and cinnamon from the bed sheets.
With the sea of uncertainty floating within your head, you needed something familiar to ground you to the present. You craved Joker and his unique scent but he was nowhere to be found.
You whimpered dejectedly and Morgana's heart went out to you.
She wanted to offer you some emotional support but decided to leave you be. No words of encouragement could help the pain you were in.
She checked on you one last time before leaving your room. Her mind was focused on you and not her surroundings. She received the jump scare of a lifetime when she turned the corner.
"Holy s__t!" Morgana yelped.
Joker pursed his lips and watched your friend try to scramble away. Morgana knocked a figurine on the hallway table over but remained on her feet for the most part. The bauble smashed onto the floor in several pieces and Joker hummed offhandedly at its demise.
"I uh li-ked that one. So! I'm guessing you're the... florist friend."
He blocked her escape and tilted his head in a show of intimidation. It worked like a charm. Morgana's brown eyes were wide like saucers.
"Y/n likes your work. The uhh.. arrangements.. from Arrange Me NoT.. ya see. I wasn't ex-pect-ting visitors so uh sorry bout this..." Joker went to grab Morgana but she shoved the decorative table in his direction and bolted down the hallway.
Joker sighed and gave her a head's start before he easily caught up to her in the living room.
He yanked her back by her hair and Morgana, ever mindful of you trying to sleep, stifled her scream with her palm.
Her back collided with the wall as Joker held a knife up to her throat. It was natural that she panicked but she did so for an entirely different reason.
"You can't kill me, it'll tear Y/n apart!" Morgana looked Joker dead in the eye and pleaded her case. He rolled his eyes and nudged her jugular with his knife.
"S-She's hurting! She's hurting and we didn't know!! If you kill me it'll only make things worse on her! Please, I want to take care of my friend, I won't tell a-anyone! I-I-I promise!" Morgana started to sob but Joker could care less.
He furrowed his brows and gripped his knife tighter, "Whaddya mean.. 'Y/n is hurting?"
Morgana scanned Joker's face. His makeup was more terrifying in person than on tv.
The clown looked serious but she didn't know the guy well enough to know for sure so she asked aloud. "Y-You don't know?"
J rolled his eyes again and smacked his lips. "I wouldn't asK if I diD, now would I? Who. HurT. Her?" Morgana flinched every time he stressed a syllable.
Now, Morgana was a sensible woman. She was book and street smart and used them well in life.
Even with her back literally against the wall, she wouldn't show fear; it wasn't in her free spirited nature. She faced fear with a straight face and dealt with the consequences later, however; this man was worse than fear.
The Joker was unpredictable and unnaturally calm with everything he did. He held her at knifepoint with a lazy grin as if it didn't matter if she answered or not.
She would die regardless.
Her life didn't matter to him so she had to think smart to stay alive. She resorted to her business savvy skills.
Morgana had information that Joker didn't know about and that put a value on her life. It would buy her some time to escape at least.
She nodded to herself and began to work.
"Will you let me go? I-I'll tell you anything, just.. not while being held at knifepoint." Morgana glanced at the weapon resting precariously on her jugular. Any more pressure and the edge would puncture the skin.
Joker narrowed his eyes but guided Morgana over to the kitchen island by her arm after thinking things over. He wanted to hear what she had to say.
He pushed her towards a barstool and leaned down right in her face.
He hoped his fear tactics weren't rusty from misuse yet Morgana looked ready to pass out. His presence alone had her on edge.
"Start. Talking." Joker ordered.
Morgana nodded and closed her eyes. He wasn't giving her any time to react to any of this. She was face to face with the infamous Joker inside her friend's apartment. It was a lot to digest. Just what business did he have with you?
But suddenly, everything made sense.
The reason why you became so secretive out of the blue. Why you denied having relations with Bruce Wayne, how you survived the attack at The Prosperity, and why you wanted privacy at your apartment, now more so than ever. She thought back to when this all started; right after Joker escaped from Arkham Asylum.
You were keeping Joker a secret this entire time right under everyone's nose.
Morgana had to give you props; you did an amazing job but she still had to ask.
"Before I start, I have to know. Are you just using her or are you and Y/n like.. together together?" She made a lewd gesture with her hands. Joker wasn't amused. He clicked his blade back out with a sigh.
"I won'T ask again. Talk or the uhh knife? This one! It comes back." He shook it playfully and its sharp edge gleamed in the kitchen's overhead lights.
Joker wouldn't hesitate plunging the knife into her neck. The clean up would be a pain but nothing he couldn't handle. If she didn't want to willingly talk then things could shift to a more tortuous method of communication.
It was all up to Morgana to decide. Comply or be difficult. He let her mull it over.
Watching Joker's fiddle with his knife was enough to get her talking. This madman would not hesitate in killing her and she knew it. She'd tell him anything as long as that knife kept a safe distance from her. "I'll talk."
Morgana sighed in relief when Joker backed off.
"Okay, wow um, you might wanna sit down for this. It's.. a lot to take in. Ugh, where do I start?"
Joker watched Morgana stall and decided to help her along. He sighed and pulled up a seat in front of her.
"Let's start... righhhht after Florence left yesterday." Joker fixed his suit collar before crossing his ankles. Morgana was in disbelief by his extensive knowledge of the situation.
"How do you...?" Joker sent her a glare.
"You're right, I don't wanna know. Okay, so apparently Florence knows about you and Y/n. F__k, I do too! This is crazy. You and Y/n.. are dating. Anyways, Flo stormed out of the apartment with Neo hot on her heels. It was crazy with everyone talking over themselves and Y/n fainted but thankfully Bruce caught her. We were so worried about her but when she came to, she was still hung up on Florence. Then Y/n and Dick were yelling at each other until her mom broke them up."
Morgana ran a hand through her silk press. This was a lot harder to explain than she thought.
She quite honestly didn't know if The Joker wanted a short summary or a detailed explanation but she continued nonetheless. She chose to info dump to save her own hide.
"We all went into the kitchen– Y/n's parents, Barbs and I, while Y/n, Dick, and Bruce were still arguing in the dining room. Y/n walked past all angry at something Grayson said and slammed her bedroom door close but her mom left us in the kitchen to bring Y/n a plate of dessert. I guess they patched things up. They were up in her room for the—"
Joker had to interrupt. "Y/n let someone into her room?"
Morgana slowly nodded. He had been quiet as she rambled, she wasn't expecting him to interrupt to clarify such a useless detail.
"Yeah, it was her mom so guess it was okay? Well, now that I think about it, Y/n didn't appreciate them 'invading her safe space.' Her words not mine. It was around that time we all decided on staying over for a sleepover and Y/n made sure we were all situated before going to bed. I swear everything was fine when we went to sleep but we woke up to Y/n screaming her head off."
Morgana began to tear up. Joker felt indifferent to the sight since it wasn't your tears. Seeing Morgana's just annoyed him.
She took a deep breath and Joker knew she was getting to the important part.
"When we got to the balcony, Y/n was fighting with Bruce and crying her heart out. She was reliving everything that happened that night and... h-hey woah!! Where are you going?!"
Morgana panicked when Joker shifted to get up from his chair. She blocked his path and he eyed her in disgust.
"Move." Joker could not stand Wayne and his obvious lovesick attraction to you.
You had relations with Bruce that Joker didn't know about and it irked him to have competition for your love.
It was already bad enough that Wayne was at your apartment, that he spent the night, and then had the audacity to put his hands on you. But he messed up by making you cry. The man was begging for death at this point.
Joker would enjoy murdering Gotham City's most upstanding citizen. He already had a thousand ways to do it brewing inside his head. However, Morgana was in his way.
She hesitantly pushed him back and apologized when Joker gave her a harsh glare. Note to self: do not touch the psychotic clown, she thought.
She tried to calm down his murderous campaign by telling the truth.
"It wasn't Bruce! He was only trying to help!" Joker rolled his eyes (what help has Wayne ever been) but she put her foot down and continued.
"IF YOU STOP JUMPING TO CONCLUSIONS AND LET ME FINISH, YOU WOULD UNDERSTAND!" She slapped her hands over her mouth and looked up at Joker.
She did not just yell at this man. Morgana did some questionable things in her life but that had to be the most reckless of them all. She glanced towards the bedroom and hoped that she wasn't too loud.
Joker was seriously considering snapping her neck for raising her voice at him.
His patience was thin today and this girl was testing it to the limits. Although he was curious as to why she stifled her voice.
He followed her gaze and eyed her quizzically. Morgana answered his unspoken question.
She dropped her hand, "Y/n is sleeping. It took forever to calm her down last night."
Joker closed his eyes and sighed. He was so busy handling the Florence situation with Neo last night, he didn't stop and check on you. And that proved to be a big mistake.
Once again, when you needed Joker the most, he was nowhere to be found. His sweet Bunny was terrified last night and had to rely on Wayne of all people for comfort. Joker had failed you yet again. It left a sour taste in his mouth.
He assumed guilt and vowed to atone for his failure in blood.
"Uhhh what, errrr rather who made her cry? Who I'm killing?" Joker asked out of the blue.
He sat back down on the barstool and Morgana eyed him briefly as she thought over her answer. If she told the truth, then he would go out and start a murdering spree.
"No one I think? Like I said, Y/n was in total hysterics last night. Her parents knew exactly what to do to calm her down from her episode. She... she had a panic attack about the night she was—" Morgana stopped and looked away.
The most important part and she couldn't say it aloud. She fought back tears and faced Joker.
He needed to know but the words were caught in her throat.
Joker wasn't a fool. Something was hurting his Bunny that he didn't know about. Correction; He knew something from your past still haunted you for a while now.
There were signs that he picked up during his brief time with you.
You were a recluse despite being so young and you avoided all types of human interaction outside of your close circle of friends. He also noted you did not have any male friends, except for the Grayson boy.
You visibly became uncomfortable around the opposite sex. Him included at times.
Joker knew about your claustrophobia and anxiety in tight spaces. He noticed you would eye him warily when the two of you would take the elevator, or that you preferred open floor plans, and most of all– he remembered the conversation the two of you shared after he rescued you from Two Face's warehouse.
Joker couldn't ignore the fact that another man was on top of you earlier. "Did he.. uh you know.." Joker brushed your thigh in passing.
"No and could you just drop it? I-I don't want to be a victim again."
And Joker would be a fool not to remember the comment you made as he prepared to take you for the first time that same night.
"Um.. almost two years. B-Before I moved to Gotham. It's one of the reasons why I moved." You met Joker's knowing gaze and weakly smiled. "It's in the past. I'm okay. Really. You can touch me.. I ahh I like it when you do."
Two years. You didn't want to be a victim again. You moved to a different city to get away from the trauma someone inflicted on you.
You liked Joker's touch but it took him forever to acclimate you to it without flinching.
You still did every now and then but he paid it no mind since you would relax after a second or two. Joker noticed every little thing about his Light but he dismissed all the warnings signs.
The truth was right there. He was just too selfish to address them.
All the times he was too rough in bed or grabbed you unexpectedly, came crashing down on him. What if he pressured you into something you didn't want? What if he triggered old wounds and made things worse?
His Light, his ray of hope in this bleak existence of his, deserved to be happy and loved.
Without your smiling face by his side, Joker would be a ruthless madman again; only wishing for the world to burn with no true endgame in sight.
He spent too much time bathed in your light to return to his pointless crusade. What a lonely life he lived before you came and gave it purpose.
Joker didn't know what to do with the fact that his Light was miserable inside.
Morgana watched him slip down a mental rabbit hole. He looked lost in thought as a weight settled over his brow.
She wondered what you saw in the man but the longer she stared, she could see some of the appeal. He was hot if she squinted. Joker obviously cared a great deal about you and his eyes were a complex shade of green that Morgana had never seen before.
You had a thing for eyes.. but the fact you made someone like The Joker have feelings for another human being was an achievement in itself.
Morgana hated to interrupt his thoughts but she finally found the courage to continue. She cleared her throat to continue but Joker cut her off.
"Don'T say it. I know. I've.... known for a while now." He swept his arm across the kitchen counter and sent items crashing to the floor.
Morgana jumped at the unexpected action and watched Joker stand up and begin pacing the room, mumbling to himself.
He was about to start breaking more things when Morgana stole his attention.
"Now you see why I asked you earlier?" Joker shot her a glare. She swiftly changed her tone. "Are you just using Y/n... or are you going to be there for her? Y/n needs us, all of us, and if you're just using her, I'm sorry but I can't allow that!"
Joker laughed, "What are ya gonna do, hmm? Stop me? Now.. that? That is funny. But don't worry– I'm not using Y/n.. I lov—"
Joker stopped himself mid sentence and Morgana caught onto what he almost said. Her jaw dropped in disbelief.
You could hear the fridge humming in the background, it was so quiet in the kitchen.
"O-Oh. Well, um that wasn't on my monthly bingo card but alrighty now." Morgana fell back onto the barstool.
This was awkward. She stole a glance at the criminal frozen in place as he registered what he just confessed to.
He finally almost said it aloud. He'd been struggling for days to tell you in person but managed to say it to your friend, no sweat. She had to die now. No one could know he had feelings.
Joker turned his head like an owl and Morgana instantly picked up on his murderous intent.
She moved so there was an island counter in between Joker and her. She valued her life, thank you very much.
"Hey now! No need to get all murder stabby stabby on me! T-That's amazing! H-have you told Y/n yet?"
Joker curled his lip. "No. Where is she?" He glanced down the hall and was about to storm off when Morgana flailed her arms.
"Wait! Don't wake her up!!" Her shout worked in getting Joker's attention but now she had to do damage control. Joker did not like her ordering him around. Morgana could work on establishing an acquaintance later, your health was more important.
"You can't just drop an L bomb after everything that's happened, are you crazy?! Now is not the time and news flash! She doesn't need— Uh excuse you?! Hey, are you listening to me?"
Morgana dashed down the hallway to catch up to Joker. She slipped past him and blocked the door frame with her body. "Listen to what I'm saying!"
Joker eyed her like a pest. Did she seriously think she could stop him?
"Y/n can't stand men right now. She drew blood trying to get away from Bruce and she couldn't tolerate her own father's presence. You don't know what her ex did to her. You don't want to see her like this."
Joker stared at Morgana as her warning sank in.
If he had any clue what your sorry excuse for an ex did, then you needed someone to comfort you more than ever. Isolation was the last thing you needed right now.
As someone who frequently battled voices inside of his head, silence was the enemy and made matters worse. Joker knew that for a fact that you don't handle separation well, so why did Morgana think leaving you to your thoughts was a good idea?
It was a recipe for disaster.
He understood why you're terrified of men but you never feared him before. Why start now?
Joker smacked his lips and shoved Morgana aside. She yelped as he opened the bedroom door and glanced around.
Same original hardwood floors, same vegan cowhide rug.
The leather couch with two accent chairs, one slate grey, the other sage green, were still over in the corner by the electric fireplace and the view of Grant Park from outside was half obscured by the curtains. A single beam of sunlight was the only source of light within the room.
Everything was the same yet vastly off due to the fact that your aura wasn't thriving in the room.
It felt cold and bereft of life.
Joker was eyeing the open closet door when he saw something shift on the bed.
There was a sizable lump in the middle but he recognized the shape from anywhere. You were buried underneath the covers and doing your best impression of a blanket burrito. He could tell that you were awake.
You were timid but curious of the presence that entered the room. Subtle movements revealed you were tracking his every footfall.
Joker exhaled before walking over to stand beside the bed. He rather rip the band-aid off than freak you out by stalling.
Morgana picked herself up from off the floor and entered the room, only for Joker's eyes to force her back out.
She understood the message within the greenish hue.
"I was neva here." She said as she walked backwards out the door. It clicked shut behind her.
With her gone, Joker could finally breathe a sigh of relief.
He wasn't out of the woods just yet since Morgana would surely stay inside the apartment, (little did he know, she was cupping her ear to the door, trying to eavesdrop) but he could be more forward with his actions. It was a relief that your rooms were soundproof; Joker had a lot on his mind.
"I know you're awake."
The pile of covers flinched and shrunk in on itself. Joker shrugged off his coat and tossed it onto the leather couch. It landed heavily with a distinct metal clank.
"You probably need, uhh, space but I can't leave ya alone. NoT now. I'm here. If you need me." Joker sank a knee onto the bed and crept forward until he bumped against you. He heard the sharp inhale you made upon contact and wisely backed off.
You were a gentle soul both inside and out. You didn't deserve to be frightened of something as simple as human touch. He wanted nothing more than to spoil you with affection, however Joker would be patient and regain your trust again. You were worth the wait.
Just like the bunny he named you after, he would wait until you came crawling out of your hiding hole, curious to explore.
And just like he expected, you slowly poked your head from out of the covers before looking around the room. He stayed out of your eyesight so he wouldn't startle you, but somehow, you knew he was there.
It wasn't that dark in the room but he was hesitant to turn on a light until you asked him to.
"W-Who's t-there?" You turned your head and locked eyes with pools of jade.
Joker didn't move a muscle as you lookedbut didn't fully see him. He noticed you shaking. You probably saw someone else with your unstable mind.
"Y/n, it's me." J waved at you but you shrunk back further into the covers.
He had to think fast and jog your memory. He was the one that gave you a slew of nicknames but you didn't have one for him. He was just J.
Not very helpful in this current predicament.
Joker still had his makeup on and it would remain until Morgana left the penthouse for good. It eliminated him from showing you the constellation of freckles you loved so much on his face. That for sure would restart your memory.
What was something the two of you shared that could help familiarize Joker to you?
He had yet to give you anything of sentimental value so he striked that off the list. He was shifting his weight on the bed when you tensed.
Your nose flexed just like a bunny, he thought it was cute.
"I should ahhh–"
You cut Joker off. "Lighter fluid and something.. metallic. It.. it smells like that when I'm safe with.. J? Where, w-where were you? Why didn't you stop him..?"
There were many things in this life that Joker overcame. He been in the world's most toughest jails, endured inhumane torture methods, and fought against the greatest superheroes and lived to tell the tale. Yet despite all of those feats, he was brought to his knees at the sight of your tears time and time again.
They were daggers straight to his heart. He couldn't bear seeing his Light in so much pain but despite the agony, he couldn't look away.
You clung tighter to the comforter around you.
"I-I don't know what's r-real anymore! I can hear him telling me it's okay but it's your hands hurting me. You wouldn't do that! Your hands are warm w-with callouses on the palms and index fingers. I begged you to stop! Why won't you s-stop?! Please.. just.. Why weren't you there when I needed you?"
Joker hated to admit it, but Morgana was right. He didn't need to see you like this.
He was living in a nightmare seeing his precious bunny struggling to see the truth. Your mind was all mixed up, fighting both the past and the present.
He had to do something although he didn't know what.
"I.. I wasn't here last night, but uhh, I'm here now. C'mon, Y/n, tell me what ya need me to do."
Joker would give you the world on a silver platter if you asked for it, but he felt utterly useless watching you spiral into madness. His heart stopped beating after he heard your watery plea.
"It hurts, please stop." You weren't thinking clearly and he began to worry when you started to breathe erratically.
He couldn't sit around and watch you suffer. Joker threw all caution to the wind and pulled you in for a hug, covers and all.
At first you resisted– Joker thought he messed up big time– but you sagged further in his arms and buried your face into his chest.
You grabbed fists full of J's suit and inhaled.
The unique cocktail that only Joker possessed, helped you recognize who held you tightly. You sobbed knowing that your Dark Prince was finally here. You thought Joker abandoned you.
"I don't want him to come back, please don't go!" You looked up at Joker.
Your big e/c were frantically staring into his. He sighed and tucked a wayward curl back into place under your bonnet– for once, you didn't flinch, rather you leaned into his touch. Your cheek felt so cold against his hand.
Something in J gave way to the moment.
"If you'll, uh let meee, I'll never let you go. Is that okay?" Joker asked. You looked away and he quickly added. "I won't do anything else, doll. I just wanna be.. here for ya. Let me ahh hold you so... he.. doesn't hurt ya. I won't leave you."
You bit your lip. Joker's arms were soothing for now but you were wary of them.
He could turn violent at a moment's notice. "You promise you won't hurt me?"
You gasped when Joker rested his forehead against yours. It didn't matter that his white paint transferred onto your skin. You weren't expecting such a sweet gesture from him.
It pained him to hear your plea. He feared you were broken beyond repair. But Joker could fix you; he could fix anything if given enough time.
"I'd let Bats drag me back to Arkham Asylum before I'd lay a finger on ya. Never again." He kept eye contact with you as he grabbed your hand. You surprised yourself by letting him do it.
Baby steps, Joker thought to himself. His eyes squeezed shut as he kissed the fading scar that he made on your palm.
You saw the anguish take hold of his features. Since when was Joker so open to show his emotions?
Joker dropped his usual dialect and talked to you straight. You knew he was serious when his voice also dropped an octave.
Gone was the clown that Gotham City feared, this was just J, a man secretly in love, speaking to you in the hushed air of your room.
"You're my Light. My everything." He used your fingers in his grasp to wipe your tears away.
More rushed to the surface hearing his sincere words but he diligently kept wiping. "These tears I swear, they'll be the death of me. I know it's scary and you have every right to fear me, but if you don't remember anything else– know this Y/n." He waited until you looked at him.
A kaleidoscope of green greeted you and you swore you would never be the same.
"I will never hurt you again. I promise."
Joker whispered your name when you lost concentration and he patiently waited until you looked into his eyes again.
They pleaded with you to understand the unspoken truths his heart was too weak to voice.
Screw what Morgana said about bad timing. He wanted you to know. He had to tell you the truth. Joker cupped your face, "Y/n, I lo—"
You wanted to hear what Joker had to say but your eyes grew heavy all of a sudden. The last thing you ate was that plate of sugar Mom brought you last night. Your body burned through it and demanded more fuel to keep you functioning.
You were dehydrated and your mind and body were running on fumes. You couldn't keep up, so you crashed.
Joker panicked when your body swayed slightly before you fell back. You were unconscious by the time he could react.
He cursed at his failed attempt but recovered quickly to dote on you. Declarations of love would have to wait. His Light was running the risk of being sick.
Joker laid you down and tucked you into bed properly before heading over to the door. Much to his surprise Morgana was there, doing a terrible job of hiding that she was eavesdropping.
She pretended to straighten the abstract artwork hanging outside the guest bedroom as Joker walked by.
She glanced inside and saw you sleeping but knew something happened behind closed doors.
Instead of being a blanket burrito, you were tucked in bed like Sleeping Beauty with the pillows and covers around you almost picturesque.
Joker had a soft side after all. She just witnessed it firsthand.
Maybe she should tell him everything your parents disclosed last night after all. By the time she caught up to Joker in the living room, he was mid-call.
He saw her approaching and held up a finger.
Morgana dealt with many rude people in her line of work but Joker was probably the rudest of them all.
"... Mmhm, make sure she's discreet this time. One of Y/n's friends is still here. Yeah.. about that.." Joker locked eyes with Morgana. "She's alive. For now."
She froze on the spot. What did for now mean? Was there some kind of 'how to stay alive' program she needed to know about? He had some nerve and this was the man who claimed to love you.
How comforting.
Morgana bounced on the balls of her feet hoping to be acknowledged soon.
Joker discussed some more minor details with one of his henchmen before hanging up. His eyes then flickered over to the vibrant bouquet of flowers Morgana was working on.
She thought he would destroy her hard work but he leaned over to sniff the delicate flora instead.
"For Y/n?" He scanned the work for any imperfections; there weren't any.
He wanted nothing but the best for his bunny. He stared at Morgana, arching an eyebrow when she didn't respond.
"Y–Yeah." Morgana said, "I'm not finished yet! It's gonna be double in size with more Queen Anne lace and roses to r-round it all out. Y/n loves roses and the Eucalyptus will be good for her exhaustion. Its scent is known for its aromatherapy powers plus its good for rejuvenating the spirit and overall elevating one's mood."
Joker nodded and backed off. It was nice to know one of your friends was looking out for you in your time of need.
He was wary of keeping Morgana alive but she was proving to be 'good people' as you had a habit of saying. A far cry from Florence.
Joker grumbled to himself just thinking about the Haitian.
Morgana jumped hearing a rare chuckle from the dark clown. "She'll like them. Now! Let's dis-cuss you. Sit."
Joker clapped his hands and pointed to the blue couch in your living room. He didn't wait for Morgana to act, he was already walking towards the kitchen to grab a water.
He noticed the leftovers in your fridge as he rummaged around for a drink. You probably needed to eat but he'd wait for the doc to look you over and decide what's best.
He snagged two water bottles and headed back to the living room but arrived to witness Morgana swirling a tumbler glass in her hands.
She took a big swig from it as he sat down opposite of her in an accent chair.
She wiped her mouth and tried to explain, "Don't judge me. I need hard liquor after all of this. Want one? I'm great at mixing drinks." She shimmied her shoulders but Joker wasn't amused.
He heard stories from Y/n about Morgana. Her and Florence were the heavy drinkers of the group.
"Y/n doesn't keep alcohol in her apartment." He noted.
Morgana laughed once and polished off her drink. She set it on the coffee table that separated them both. She noticed the clown was right at home in your place but had yet to find her and Flo's numerous stashes of liquor.
"What Y/n doesn't know won't kill her." She failed to dodge the water bottle Joker threw at her face. "OW! What was that for?!"
He sipped on the water while rolling his eyes. Morgana rubbed at her cheek and waited for the clown to finish. He drank the entire bottle in one pull before recapping the top and setting it down.
"Y/n likes to recycle. Ya know-  saving the.. turtles, uhh, one plastic at a time. That's my Light. Always caring for others; failing to take care of herself."
"Isn't she caring for you until you no longer need her?" She interrupted.
Joker licked his scars. Have patience. No need to take your frustrations out on others, he heard your voice recite in his head. He took a deep breath before smiling at Morgana.
"I'm noT leaving Y/n so that means I have to, uhh, geT along with the people in her life. So! This can be a lit-le experiment of sorts between usss. Let's see how long you can keep your mouth shut and I'll.... see how long I can tolerate you without murdering ya! Deal?"
Morgana was at a loss for words. What kind of agreement was that?
"I need another drink." She sighed. Joker's laugh was far more creepier in person than on tv.
Tumblr media
The sound of the doorbell startled Morgana out of her task. She set the spray bottle down and jogged over to the front door to answer it.
She was pleasantly surprised when a beautiful woman was standing outside, chewing on bubble gum with an attitude.
"Can I help you?" Morgana asked.
The female looked up from her phone and glanced down the short hallway, at the elevator, and then back at Morgana.
"Tis boy better not have given me da wrong address. Hold on." She dialed a number and brought it to her ear.
Morgana was left awkwardly holding the door when the mysterious woman began arguing with whoever she called.
The commotion gained Joker's attention all the way in the living room. He recognized the woman at the door instantly. She did the same the moment she spotted Joker.
"Well well! If it isn't my sorry excuse for a patient! I see you're not restin' your leg like I told ya." She sighed.
Joker smiled and leaned on the door frame. "Be glad I didn't kill you after my checK up, doc." He fired back.
Morgana glanced back and forth between the two. "Uhh do you two know each other or something?"
The woman looked Morgana dead in the eye. "I don't know who this man is. I mean, he could be walking down the street, I wouldn't. Sorry to this man."
Joker laughed and she joined along but swatted his hands away when he tried to grab her neck.
The pair walked inside, leaving Morgana utterly confused in the foyer. She watched them talk amongst themselves like two old friends and caught up to them mid sentence.
"..and her hands are sooooo cold, doc. She's been crying her little heart out and passed out in my arms. Whatever can ya do?" Joker pouted as he held the bedroom door open for his esteemed guest.
She walked in and looked around. Leave it for Joker to find some chick with money. She sat her bag down on a nearby table and dug through it for some gloves.
"Sounds like dehydration. When's the last time she ate?"
Morgana walked in and answered for Joker, "Last night around eight ish? It was a plate of dessert but she ate dinner too. Hi, I'm her friend and you are?"
"Name's Sarai. I'm this idiot's on-call doc." Sarai dabbed Morgana up before facing her employer. "Now, where's my patient?"
Joker was too busy stewing in jealousy. He liked secret handshakes too. What gives?
"You don't do that with me doc. I thought we were errr close."
She eyed him like a fed up mother would her child. "You ain't black, Joker. Now move." She pushed him aside and approached the bed, but stopped as if she saw a ghost.
She treated hundreds of patients a day but she never forgot a face. "I remember her."
Sarai picked up your hands and sure enough, the jagged cut that she treated almost a month ago was still there. Your hands were cold to the touch just like Joker said and also a bit clammy.
"Did you do this?" She pointed at your palms. Joker sat down by your side and had the decency to look ashamed. He sighed before nodding.
Both Sarai and Morgana stared at him in disbelief. He looked so remorseful.
Joker was such a man child at times. One would have thought Sarai scolded him with the way he was acting. She flicked her braids over her shoulder with a huff.
Today they were blonde butterfly locs reaching down to her waist. When she shook her head, they moved with her. Joker eyed them curiously. How did she work in the hospital with such long braids?
"I knew I shoulda filed a police report. Her shoddy story bout mistakin' the pepper grinder for a knife was too sketchy."
She donned her pink gloves before she gently opened your mouth. "Ah, as I thought. She's dehydrated. You want an IV in her?"
Morgana stood on the other side of the bed to watch this interaction up close. There was actually a person not afraid of The Joker!
This supposed doctor was talking to him any kind of way and he paid her no mind. She would demand something out of her bag and he would grab it, no questions asked.
But he pushed Morgana to the ground and threw water bottles at her when she raised her voice at him. This man was truly unpredictable.
Morgana let her intrusive thoughts get the better of her. "So you're a real doctor and you willingly work for him?"
She slapped a hand over her mouth after she spoke but it was too late. Sarai was inserting an IV into your arm but chuckled at the insult. She admired her handiwork before replying.
"Dr. Sarai Obukofe, chief trauma surgeon at Gotham General. Joker's house calls pays more tho. Don't give me dat look. I'm from Blüdhaven, his crimes ain't nothin' n' Jokester here won't hurt friends of da family. Won't ya now?" She nudged his leg with her own.
Joker hummed. It was neither affirmative or negative.
Morgana slowly nodded. She picked up the thick Blüdhaven accent at the door but she was still confused.
"Friends of the family?" She questioned.
Sarai rigged the IV bag to your bedpost. It would have to do since she didn't pack an IV pole. Not like she could.
This was an off the books house call after all. She received a text from her cousin saying to come to an address with her crash kit– strictly on the low.
Sarai automatically knew it was for Joker. She couldn't refuse the job even if today was her rare day off.
She blew a bubble and popped it sharply before eyeing Joker. "How deep is she?" She jerked her head at Morgana.
Joker didn't look away from you to answer. "Accident. I'm con-sider-ing offing her later."
Sarai grimaced and cast sympathetic eyes on Morgana. "Ouch, so an outsider then."
She checked you over when you began to shiver. "Frost mentioned on the phone that she had a 'traumatic experience.' Care ta explain that?"
Morgana had enough. She cut through the air with her hand in a fit of rage.
"No, no! Go back! I thought we had a deal, Joker! We shared a drink together, you said you'd keep me alive if I helped you with this 'get along with others' experiment of yours. Now you're thinking about killing me again? Make up your mind!"
Joker was about to when you whimpered and stole everyone's attention. They were being too loud.
"You're disturbing my patient. Either lower ya voice or move dis conversation elsewhere." Sarai hissed at Morgana.
The florist was trying to keep her cool. These two strangers just barged into your place as if they owned it and had the audacity to boss her around!
She couldn't even defend herself! Morgana wished she'd let Dick stay behind instead. He probably would've handled this situation a bit better than her. Sure he would've fought with Joker and possibly died in the process, but he wouldn't have sided with the madman to stay alive. GCPD would have the place surrounded with Batman en route by now.
She had half a mind to sneak away and call the authorities but one look at you had her second guessing that decision.
The last thing you needed was more stress and strangers surrounding you and your space. You required peace and quiet to heal.
But this clown was on thin f__king ice with her.
It was a lot to handle on a Friday afternoon and Morgana wasn't about to let Joker or this doctor mess with her energy. She took a relaxing breath and found her center.
"I will not let your indecisiveness get the better of me. However if we're to get along– whatever the hell that means, you gotta stop threatening to kill me." Morgana said.
Joker looked at Sarai as if she had the answers.
The doctor was putting away her tools and had no parts in this. She'd stick around until Joker called her back to remove the IV. Other than that, her job was done.
That is until you groaned and blinked your eyes open.
Everyone held their breath in anticipation. You squinted your eyes a few times until you felt a tightness on your forearm.
Much to your horror there was a hospital IV inserted in your vein. You began to claw at it when Joker reached out and stopped you.
"Hey. Hey.. leave thaT alone, baby doll." Your eyes darted up to him.
It took you longer than he liked to recognize him again, but you were slowly coming back to yourself.
"J.. it's cold." Your fingernail picked at the tape Sarai attached to keep the needle in place.
You hated doctors and you hated medical treatment. It reminded you too much of that night and the following weeks thereafter. You didn't want to think about it again, and Joker was right there to distract you from it all.
His hand rested atop yours and squeezed. He felt like a furnace. He sighed, "I knooow but, it's gonna make ya feel better. You uhh want me to hold you? Promise I'm warm, hmm?"
His thumb rubbed circles on your darker skin as you thought over his offer. You relented with a weak nod.
Joker stood up to climb into the bed with you but looked up at something within the room.
"Close the door on your way out. Now."
You wondered who he was talking to and followed his gaze. You and Morgana locked eyes. She was calm, way too calm to be in Joker's presence and the crazy part– he allowed her to be.
Your eyes went back and forth between her and Joker as the wheels in your brain spun out of control. Surely this was a dream.
There was no way Joker would let another one of your friends in on his secret. Then you spotted a third individual standing off to the side. She looked familiar but you couldn't place her at present.
Your mind was too busy grasping at the reality of Joker and Morgana being in the same room without the latter being murdered.
That dream you had of a little boy by the river whispered in your mind.
'She knows and now she has to die.'
He wasn't talking about Florence. He was referring to Morgana.
You shot forward and grabbed a hold Joker's suit vest in a surprisingly strong grip. He looked down at you in intrigue as you started spouting nonsense.
"Not her! Please don't kill her Joker! She's my friend. Y-You promised me!" You were leaving wrinkles in Joker's shirt as Morgana rounded the bed to enter your line of vision.
"Y/n! Calm down, I'm right here! I'm okay!" She stole your attention but it came with a price. You let go of Joker to whirl on Morgana. It was her turn to hiss at your vice-like grip.
"You can't be here! You have to leave Gana. You didn't see nothing! Deny everything! Please.. I-I can't lose you too. I can't lose another friend.. Please."
You sobbed into her arms and she glared at Joker who was still standing off to the side, speechless.
He was coping with the fact you begged him not to kill someone and that he felt obligated to obey.
He wasn't going to let Morgana leave the apartment building alive but the moment you begged him, Joker's hands were tied. He promised he'd never hurt you. That meant physically, mentally, and emotionally. You stopped The Joker with three simple words.
You promised me.
He stood frozen, awaiting your next orders for he truly did not know what to do after discovering the power you held over him.
Morgana managed to get you to lie back on the bed as your burst of adrenaline died out. You felt sluggish all of a sudden.
Sarai stood watch as the pain meds she added to your IV line started to kick in. You fought against the fog and looked over at Joker.
His eyes instantly found yours and thus the staring match began. Your drugged induced gaze had a clear warning in them and you made sure to declare it vocally.
"You hurt my friends.. and I'll never.. forgive you." You fell back asleep and the room breathed a sigh of relief.
Joker feared nothing in this life but your warning hit him like a ton of bricks. He hoped you would forget all of this when you woke up.
If not, then he was in deep trouble.

Ellie? On the floor, sticking her fingers in a wound to try and fish a bullet out. Ace? Hovering above her with great concern. Eddie? Standing in the open doorway, watching with abject horror.
“Oh my— no, no no no, hands out of the bullet wound, thank you.” He knows he’s fussing like a worried mother, but jesus fuck that’s a child with a gunshot wound and she’s sticking her hands in it. “What on earth do you think you’re doing?”
“Fixing it,” Ellie replies waspishly, pointedly not removing her hand. “And what do you want, Question Man?”
“It’s the Riddler, not ‘question man’, and I want you to stop that.” He strides forward, crouching down and trying to pull her hands away from the literal open wound, but all that gets him is a kick to the stomach and an angry hiss.
“Hands off, green bean, I’ve got it!”
“It’s a bullet wound! How old are you, ten? Eleven? Why the fuck—“
Language, Ellie thinks, face unimpressed as the odd man starts rambling about ‘child safety’ and ‘fake clown bastards’. She’s fourteen (physically, anyways), thank you very much, not ten, and she’s been handling herself ever since she got away from Vlad. Besides, she would’ve had this sorted ages ago if her intangibility was working properly.
“Don’t you have better things to do? Scram, Question Man, I hear Ripley’s Believe-It-Or-Not is still hunting for their lost exhibit.”
Eddie squawks in offense. “Ripley’s?! What do you take me for, a tourist trap? I am a genius!”
“Well, you’re not acting like one! Leggo of my hands and lemme deal with this!”
He’s had enough of this, thank you very much. Eddie may not be the most physically capable, but even he knows how to handle a kid that’s barely half his size. Grabbing her hands and pulling them away from the wound, he tries to haul her up off the floor only for her to jerk her head back and smash it into his nose.
“Ow, fuck! What the hell, kid?!”
Ellie hisses, wriggling out of his grip and suppressing a wince when it pulls at her wound. “I dunno what you think you’re gonna get from me, but whatever it is, I ain’t coughing anything up! There’s no rewards coming from kidnapping me, so don’t even bother—“
But then she stops, eyes flicking to an empty space above Eddie’s head an back down to his face again. They stand at a stalemate for a long, long moment before she regards him with a wary look.
“What do you actually want?” She asks. “Don’t lie. I’ll know.”
…What does he want?
It’s a good question. Why does he even care about this disaster child and her bullet wounds? He’s never had an issue with this before. Hell, he’s had no problem with giving people debilitating and often fatal injuries for failing to solve his puzzles, and now he’s getting all worked up over… what, a random street rat?
But that’s just it. Those people all failed. This girl, she didn’t. She didn’t solve it either, but she didn’t fail. She had her own solution.
She’s smart. He needs to know how smart, and for that, he can’t have her dying of infection from a Joker-infested bullet.
(and it’s definitely infested. that shade of green is never a good sign.)
So, Eddie answers. “You have potential.”
“For what?”
“Don’t know yet. Do you know, you’re the first person other than Batman to get out of my puzzles without passing or failing?”
“Who’s Batman? That sounds like a bad fursona.”
“…What do you mean, who’s Batman?”

Cheshire cat: Jason Todd x fem!reader
Tumblr media
It was bad.
It was really, really bad.
She was shaking, the whole world was spinning, her head was killing her and she had that clenching feeling in her heart telling her that something happened.
Jason Red Hood was on the undercover operation and she hadn’t seen him for almost three weeks and it was killing her. Quite literally. On the first week she fell sick, on the second twisted her ankle during training with Tim and on the third headaches and nausea started.
Of course, Dick and Tim were making sure she was doing fine. Even Damian took some interest in her well-being. Alfred was constantly checking up if she was all right and everyone were trying to convince her to move to the manor for some time, but even Bruce could not convince her to actually do it. She only felt at ease in her own apartment. In the Wayne household she would constantly stumble upon Jason’s stuff, his books and his old clothes and would spend the entire time in his old room which will only amplify the pain and fear for her. Besides, she had been through it once, when he was killed by Joker, and doing it again would definitely brake her. So she refused, staying in her own house, only meeting boys for patrols, when it was needed.
Y/N was a long-time friend of the family. Her father was one of Bruce’s most trusted RD employee, the very first to learn Wayne was actually Batman. Sad thing that this knowledge got him killed and the man left a daughter alone in the world. So, being chased by some slight guilt Bruce took her in, soon after he adopted Dick.  So at the point, instead of one sidekick he had two. Robin was mostly the second line of attack, but Y/N, who took vigilante’s name Cheshire was supposed to be the distraction. For some reason she was extremely good with playing with people’s mind and the silent words she used to make them confused and turn them into a bunch of sheep, lost in the dark was kind of her thing. Sure, she was capable of kicking asses but observing criminals losing their shit just because of well-chosen words was far more entertaining. She truly was like a Cheshire car in Alice in Wonderland, from whom the girl took the name.
And from the first time she was on patrol with Dick and Bruce the things started accelerating.
After a few years, Dick left, Jason came in and became Robin.
And then, despite clear potential for being more than friends with Y/N he was killed by Joker, leaving the only thing happening between them in the form of awkward flirting.
And then Tim came in. And Damian.
And then Jason came back to life. Only he was not the same.
She was the first person he showed himself to, not able to stay away. She was his anchor and he wanted her back, now truly ready to be more than friends. And he was willing to fight for her, to go through the desert, climb through the highest mountains, crawl the jungle and to do any crazy shit just to prove to her what she meant to him. Luckily, she let him in without such extreme display of affection, however making him work for it. She trusted him, even if his new alter ego, Red Hood was probably a bit too violent and angry, Y/N knew the motives behind that. And many, many times she had to remind him, she was in relationship with Jason Todd, not Red Hood when it was hard for him to differentiate and literally drop the mask when he was with her.  She knew it and never complained, because she loved him too. Sometimes, being with him was like living hell, but most of the times it was … peace. Knowing that no matter what will happen he was there, ready to protect, hold and love her. And she reciprocated it all. Just being there with her in their own bubble built in the shithole Gotham was.  She would never complain or ask him to stop his action, after all she was a vigilante herself so it was easier to understand.
But still, when he was gone for some business and she could not come the fear crept in. No message, text or anything for three weeks. That was the standard procedure to keep her safe (Jason’s words, not hers). But there was also one more rule. If a month came without any sign of being alive she was allowed to start one-person search party, without involving any of his brothers. She only had to go through one more freaking week.
***
Y/N knew the location of most of his safe houses, so when 4 extremely long weeks passed she dressed up in her Cheshire gear and started her solo mission. Much to her annoyance and unease he was nowhere. Even his best friend Roy, who she never get to meet before was not in any of the places. So there were two options: she could sleep in the place she found herself in at the moment and reopen the search next night or risk losing consciousness on the street due to tiredness. The choice was obvious and she just slumped onto the bed, drifting off instantly, still in her gear.
***
“What the fuck are you doing here?!” a strong hand clasped around her wrist lifting her from the bed. The man who was brave enough to do it was taller than Y/N so her feet just dangled in the air for a second. “Are you trying to burn this place!?”
“Let. Go. Of. Me” she wriggled desperately kicking her legs and finally kicking the man in the groin.
“You little rascal! I’m gonna get you and ….” He reached for her again but she jumped away and crashed into someone else’s strong chest, immediately feeling a pair of arms encapsulating her and familiar scent became palpable.
“What the fuck Roy! What the hell were you doing?!” Jason held Y/N closer to his chest, shocked by his best friend behavior.
“She broke in! She put us at risk, Red! She should be…..”
“SHUT UP! Just shut up! So it happens, she is allowed to come here any time she wants. Unlike you, she can keep quiet.”
“Fuck, Jace. You are holding her like you know who….. oh…..” his eyes widened in realization “so, she’s the she.”
“Yes, Roy. She’s the she. It’s a shame you two met like this, truly.”
“Wait.” Y/N let go of Jace for a second and turned around to face the other guy. “You’re the Roy? The Arsenal?”
“I am.” He mumbled a bit embarrassed now “Sorry about that. I can be a bit…. Extreme when it comes to safety.”
“I can tell who taught you that” she smirked her gaze landing on Jace, who just shrugged. “Oliver send his regards, then. You know, despite everything you could let him know you are alive. Oh, and you should work on your grip, your hands got a bit sweaty when you were holding me making it so much easier to just slip away. Maybe some new gloves would help with that.”
“I see why you fell for her, Red. She’s a fast talker.”
“What were you expecting?” Jason smirked “She’s the Cheshire after all.”
“The real name’s Y/N. It’s only fair I tell you mine if I know yours.”
“Ok, if you two are done with your pleasantries, get the hell out Roy. I’d like to have some alone time with my girl.”
“For god’s sake just keep it quiet, will you? the walls are thin and I’m not a fan of hearing anything from what you two are going to do…..”
“GET OUT!” Jason yelled and seeing him shaking in rage Roy was quick to leave the room, moving to the bathroom.
“Y/N….” only now Jace took of his domino mask and his alerted gaze met hers
“Hi, Jay.” She whispered softly and just the sound of her voice made him relax “It’s good to see you.”
“It’s been four weeks, hasn’t it?” he sighed deeply and cupped her cheek caressing her skin with the thumb making her lean into the touch instantly.
“I’m sorry, baby. I’m so fucking sorry. I guess I lost track of time.”
‘I can see” she chucked pointing towards the pile of bottles in the corner of the room “bet it was quite a party here.”
“It’s not like that…..”
“Hey, relax, I’m joking. A bit.”
“Were you worried a lot?”
“Me? Worried?” she scoffed “Nope. Never.”
“Really?” she could be denying but he noticed her pale skin, bags under her eyes and how she was now shaking in the attempt to keep herself all together. He put her through it. What was worse, there was a eschar on her hairline, clear sign she was back at her poor habit of head scratching during stress. Extreme head scratching. Normally, he made sure she wasn’t hurting herself but for the last weeks he couldn’t and it was showing.
“Absolutely.”
“Then why are you here? You were clearly looking for me?”
“Sure. To kick your ass. Wait, did you think I was going to fall into your arms like a freaking Disney princess?”
“You got your name from Alice in Wonderland, so Disney it is.” He shrugged and she smacked his head playfully “but you act more like Rapunzel.” He grabbed her waist and pulled her into his chest delighting in her warmth, feeling her tensed shoulders and back relax a bit under his touch. “You’re only missing the pan.”
“I don’t need one” she muttered “I can still beat you with my bare hands” said hands were currently sneaking around his back.
“Sure you can, sweetie, sure you can. But definitely not now. You need rest. And so do I.”
“Jason.” she pulled away and looked into his eyes “are you ok? Seriously? Any injuries, bruises, broken bones?”
“Oh, you are worried….” He cooed grinning
“Once again, never. I’m only trying to assess the scope of damage I can cause you myself without breaking you.”
“there’s only one thing you can do to really break me.” He whispered leaning his forehead on hers
“and that being….?”
“breaking my heart. That’s one thing I don’t think I could recover from. “
“That’s one thing I’m not planning on doing.”
“Good.” He leaned forward and pressed his chapped lips onto hers. Just this second he realized how much he missed her. The way she always melted into him, locked her soft hands on his neck and let him kiss her. Never pushing away, not even when he was literally taking her breath away. “Needy, huh?” he smirked
“Shut up. It seems so me like you are far more excited to see me than the other way round. I can feel what’s going down there, you know.”
“Should I check your……?”
“Shut up!” she turned red instantly and tried to wriggle out of his embrace, but he did not let her.
“Sorry, sorry. I didn’t mean anything wrong. And you are right. I did miss you, all right? You can’t hold that against me….”
“I don’t Jace, I don’t.” she pecked his lips quickly “I know it’s hard for both of us.”
“But it’s worth it, right?” his voice was now unsure, all the vulnerability and fear that one day she will just leave him to live easier life creeping in “you won’t …..?”
“Of course I won’t. Come on, Jace. I love you, you know that. And you know too much about me and my alter ego to just let you walk away from me freely.”
“I love you too, you little pussycat.”
“Stop calling me that! God, Jace. Roy is next door! This is inappropriate….”
“What? You don’t want him to think you are turning into puddle because of me? That the famous Cheshire is not as tough as it seems?”
“I have my ways to compromise your Red Hood notoriety as well, honey” she stepped on her toes, hands moving up his chest painfully slowly and she whispered in his ear “I bought something new lately and so it happens I got it all underneath that skintight suit” he groaned and much to her delight tightened the grip on her hips “such a shame you will have to behave.”
“Y/N…..” he growled warningly
“Besides, now that I know you are safe I think I’m going to head home……”
“Forget it, you are not going anywhere and…..”
“Is it safe to enter? Are you two done now or do I have to keep my eyes covered?” obviously Roy chose this moment to interrupt them
“She’s staying the night.” Jason stated simply
‘Oh, Lord, why? I’m being tested right now.”
“You do realize what that means, don’t you?”
“That I’m about to be a witness to a show?”
“That you are taking the couch, you idiot!”
“Come on, that is unfair. She’s the guest and ……”
“Roy.”
“I hate you Todd. I really, really hate you. Do not expect me to cover your back again when we are patrolling.”
“I’m not worried about that. I’m pretty sure if I got deadly hurt, Y/N would find me, bring me back to life and then kill me for dying. Isn’t that right, love?”
‘Sure it is, Red. Sure it is.”

Broken Prism
Chapter 15
Fandom: Red Hood
Pairing: Jason Toddxfemale!Reader
Warnings: none
Summary: Jason and Bruce finally talk and YN and Jason finally take another step
Tumblr media
Jason stayed two days at Wayne manor before finally leaving his old room. He knew he needed to talk to Bruce, but he hated the idea. He didn’t want a lecture from his ‘dad’ but he kept repeating the part of his poison induced dream in his head. The video Bruce was watching. He remembered being 12, just starting his tenure as Robin, that was even before Dick had shown back up to work things out with Bruce. Jason had wanted to be normal, play sports at school, but he never knew how so Bruce took him out to the basketball court on the grounds to show him.
Jason had been nervous; Bruce was a pretty demanding taskmaster in training so he thought he would have to suffer the same learning basketball. He was surprised when instead of having to run a mile or do dozens of pushups before starting Bruce just showed him how to dribble correctly. For the next two hours they played and for the first time since Bruce took him in, he felt like a kid, not a vigilante. He had no worries that day, it was the best day of his life. That was the video in his dream that Bruce watched, the video where he really felt like he was Bruce Wayne’s son and not just his ward or his charity project. He hoped that Bruce remembered that day, that he really thought Jason was his son still.
“Jason, are you feeling better?” Bruce asked as Jason entered his office. He motioned for Jason to sit, and he did, stretching out, trying to seem casual. He saw the trace of a smile on Bruce’s face and frowned. Bruce knew, he always knew. Jason was putting on a show, pretending this whole thing didn’t terrify him but it did. The guy could face down Poison Ivy, Two-Face, Penguin, any of them without an ounce of concern but in his dad’s office about to have a heart to heart and he was ready to hide in a closet. He shifted in his seat, trying to think of a good answer. “Be honest.”
“I feel physically better, but mentally, I’m fucked,” he said. Bruce looked like he wanted to comment on his language but thought better of it. Jason appreciated that.
“What’s on your mind?”
“I had a dream while I was under and I killed you,” he said honestly. Bruce’s eyebrows went up, but he nodded.
“Common theme in dreams is killing of those around you. I understand your inner self wanting truly wanting to get rid of the Batman legacy…”
“I didn’t kill Batman. I killed Bruce Wayne,” Jason said. This surprised Bruce. “And I think its because I didn’t want held down by the memory of you being a shitty father.” This struck Bruce. He knew he hadn’t been a great father to his sons. He tried his best, he was too strict with Dick, too loose with Jason, yet unable to separate Jason from Dick in his mind, and he hoped with Tim he was doing better. He tried to let Tim be his own person while guiding him, not forcing him into a box like he did with Dick or Jason. “Do you remember when you taught me how to play basketball?” Jason felt his heart warm as Bruce’s eyes lit up with remembrance.
“Yes, you were good after you stopped trying to throw the ball as hard you could at the hoop,” Bruce said. “I don’t think I saw you smile so much after that.”
“I…I want to rejoin the family,” Jason said, almost whispering as the words hurt to say out loud. “But I have conditions.” Bruce sat back. “You can’t tell me not to kill.”
“Jason…that is fundamental to how the Bats operate. You cannot go killing anyone you get mad at…” Bruce began but stopped himself when he saw Jason gripping the arms of the chair, ready to bolt. He took a breath.
“I didn’t say I was going to kill anyone and everyone. I don’t even do that now. I shoot to injure mostly. But if I ever see Joker and have a shot, I’m taking it. I’m doing what your cowardly ass couldn’t. And if someone threatens YN they are dead, I don’t care if its someone like Ivy or you even. Someone hurts her they die. You have to live with that if you want me around,” Jason said. He was sitting up straighter, ready to flee if Bruce didn’t agree. Bruce stared at him long and hard, trying to reconcile who this Jason was with who Bruce wanted him to be. The thought of losing Jason again, especially when he could actually save him this time was too much.
“Fine,” he said. “But I have conditions also.” Jason sat back a little again, listening. “You need to see someone, talk to someone. I have a doctor that we all speak to when in Gotham, Dr. Thompkins, she is great. Or, if you’d rather I can find someone else that doesn’t know our history.”
“Ya, YN told me I should get therapy and she’s probably right. Don’t know who is really qualified to treat a zombie’s mental illness but sure I can talk to this Dr Thompkins,” he said. He looked down. “I’m not giving up my territory, I won’t try to take more, that’ll cause some problems, but I’m not letting crime get how it was in North Gotham.” Bruce had to take a moment again to think. Being a crime lord wasn’t what he hoped for any of his boys, but he had to admit Jason was doing a good job there and maybe he could eventually convince him to relinquish power and instead of being a crime lord he could be a protector again. What Bruce didn’t understand was Jason already was the protector, just not in a way that Bruce could understand.
“Fine, but maybe someday we can revisit that conversation?” Bruce said. Jason nodded. “And I would like to offer you to live here again. And, if she would agree YN is of course welcomed to live here also. I have a room for her any time, and you can have your room if you want it.”
“I don’t know if she would want to move in, but I’m willing, would be nice to have a proper bed again,” he said. He couldn’t wait to find Pride and Prejudice and read it in the tub. The silence that fell between the two was awkward, and Jason wanted to bolt.
“I’m sorry Jason,” Bruce said softly. He looked to his father surprised. “I failed you, more than once.” Jason sighed.
“I failed you too,” he said. Bruce shook his head.
“No, you were the child, you are supposed to fail and I, as the parent am supposed to support you after that, but many times I didn’t. I let my anger and my judgements dictate how I treated you. I failed you long before Joker got to you,” he said. Jason sniffed, feeling some tears coming to his eyes. Maybe it wasn’t him, maybe he wasn’t always the failure.
“Um, ya, no worries. I forgive you,” Jason said. Bruce nodded. “I’m going to go get some things from around town. I’ll be back.”
“You can put your gear in the cave when you get back, we will get a stand for you,” Bruce said. Jason nodded and headed out the door. He needed to get his gear, collect from his guys, and then he was going to see YN.
You had left Wayne manor that morning, needing to get some work done. You had spent the day catching up on contacts, reporting to Jim, and just trying to keep your mind off Jason. You didn’t want to bother him too much with all the shit he was going through at the moment. He needed space, not you. At least, you told yourself that. He was a hard read even for you sometimes and the last two days that he spent at Wayne manot he had been keeping his thoughts to himself. When you were there, he was quiet, sometimes you guys watched TV, or read together, but there wasn’t a lot of talking. You wanted to know what was going through his head, was he going to stay with Bruce? Would he disappear again? Did he want you to even be in his life anymore? Something had happened while he had been sleeping and you weren’t sure what, but you worried he looked at you differently now and you weren’t sure you liked that. Now that you were home, in your room, you weren’t sure how to distract yourself until you heard a knock at your window. Red Hood stood there, geared up like he was on patrol.
“What are you doing?” you asked, opening the window and letting him in. He looked at your door, so you went and locked it before he took off his helmet. You stared at him again, enjoying the color in his cheeks, the almost red tint to his lips, the brown of his eyes. They could be green in a moment, or maybe even blue, depending on the mood he was in.
“I wanted to tell you that I talked to Bruce, we um, I think we worked some things out,” he said. You smiled wide and sat on your bed, patting for him to sit. He sat next to you, and you saw him look at The Outsiders gathering dust on your nightstand, his post it still attached. “Thanks, I want to finish it this time.”
“So what did Bruce say?” you asked. He took a breath, seeming to be gearing up to something.
“He offered me a doctor, to talk to. I said yes. He offered to let me move back in, I said yes. He offered for you to move in…” Jason trailed off and you looked at him, wondering what he thought about that. “I told him I wasn’t sure; I don’t want to force you to deal with all my shit all the time.”
“I’d have to let my roommates know and probably help them pay for this place until someone else can move in,” you said. You didn’t tell Jason that Bruce had offered again for you to move in and you had agreed this time. It would be a good move not only to make sure that Jason didn’t vanish, but also in terms of your job. That Batcomputer had so much information on it you could use and there was built in protection there. Plus, you could go to fancy parties and listen in on the goings-on of the rich and morally corrupt of Gotham. It was a win-win.
“Are you sure you want to get that involved?” Jason asked. He looked worried and it warmed your heart to think about him being concerned for you, caring about you so much.
“Jason, I already told you I am in this, I am your soulmate, and I don’t want that to change. I’m not going to run from you, I’m not going to leave you,” you said, and you felt him sag in relief, moving to hug you close. You held him to you, fingers tangling into his hair.
“Thank you,” he whispered against your neck, and you shivered a little at his breath on you. He pulled back and looked at you and you saw his eyes flick to your lips. You took the chance, leaning in and catching his lips with yours. You felt an explosion in your mind, fireworks going off in every shade as he kissed you back, gripping your back and pulling you closer to him. You wanted the kiss to keep going, to see where it would stop, or if it would stop, but an alarm went off in his helmet. He looked towards it and then back at you. “Duty calls.” He smiled at you, pressed another quick kiss to your lips and put on the helmet, waving as he darted out the window and grappled into the night.

Reverse Robins!
But specifically Stephanie and Tim (with a little Jason added when it's relevant).
Note: I'm of the opinion that in Reverse Robin AUs they wouldn't actually use Robin as their code name, but for convince and clarity's sake I will be using it here.
Damian is gone. He left in a blaze of anger. They'd fought before, but this time came with a finality Bruce doesn't known how to handle.
Batman is spiraling. Without Damian around there's no need to be Bruce Wayne, no reason not to follow one more lead before turning in. No young eyes looking to him to be an example. Nothing to keep him from beating the bad guys into a comma.
Tim Drake has been watching Bruce Wayne for awhile. He's been watching Batman for longer. He saw the turn, the way the Wayne Foundation is slowly being corrupted without Bruce's over site, and the more extreme injuries criminals are coming in with. He looks at Bruce Wayne and Batman, and the man behind them both and thinks "Yeah, I can fix that." Maybe it's teenage nativity, maybe it's a drive to do something good, maybe it's the need to be in control of something in his life. Whatever it is, he acts on it.
Bruce doesn't want to let Tim be Robin. Damian was his son, and a trained assassin, Tim is a random kid with no formal training. But Tim is a random kid who figured out his identity and is actively blackmailing him with it, so he doesn't have many options.
Batman and Robin are back together. Bruce Wayne is back in board meetings. The criminals are getting a lot less bruises. Robin is far more impressive than Batman ever would have guessed he could be. Tim is falling asleep in math class, but he already knows it all anyway so it's barely worth mentioning.
There's a new vigilante in Gotham. One who sets a dangerous precedent. It's one thing for Batman to have allies, it's another for outside agents to start taking matters into their own hands. Especially when they're untrained teenagers who are looking for personal vengeance.
He does everything he can to get Spoiler to quit. He tells himself it's not just about his personal dislike of her, it's for the sake of every other misguided kid who might try to follow her lead.
He fails.
The Joker attacks Robin. He doesn't kill him, he has a worse fate in mind. He takes Batman's prodigy and makes him his own. Tries to prove that even the Bat's closest ally can be corrupted if he has a bad enough day. He succeeds, and for one terrifying night The Batman faces off against Joker Jr.
Tim survives, but he's not the same. It takes months for his injuries to heal, and even then he's haunted by what Joker turned him into. Terrified that he could snap again at the wrong moment. He tells Bruce he can't be in the field anymore, it's to big of a risk. He promises Batman he'll find another way to help.
Cluemaster is dead. He died on a suicide mission. No matter how Steph feels about it personally, logically she knows Gotham is safer without him around. Part of her can't help being relieved, and she doesn't hate that part of herself as much as she knows she should. There's no longer any need for The Spoiler.
There's an opening for Robin and Steph wants the job. Wants to prove she can do it. That she's just as good as Tim. That she's not her father. That she can make a father proud.
Batman doesn't want Stephanie. He wants Tim. But maybe Stephanie is a way to get there. To make Tim jealous enough to come back.
Bruce tells himself it's for Tim's own good. Stephanie's too. Tim needs the push, needs to be Robin again so he can overcome his fear about being the field. And Stephanie needs the training, and the focus now that Cluemaster is gone.
Robin tries, she really does. She does everything Batman asks of her, always. Except once. And once is all it takes. Robin is fired, but as she leaves the cave Stephanie grabs on to one last desperate chance to prove herself. Batman never intended for the file to be used, but Stephanie doesn't know that. Batman didn't tell her. He never told her anything.
The war that erupts is unlike anything Gotham has ever seen.
Damian comes home. It's not for Bruce. It's for Gotham, for the city that took him in despite everything.
Batman isn't listening to Oracle. He's cutting him off, overriding his systems, and treating him like nothing more than a glorified phone operator. Tim can't just do nothing. Not when his city is burning.
Black Mask captures Spoiler, and nobody notices.
Robin is back on the scene. He's reluctant at first, but once he starts it's like a switch flips. The moves are second nature, the danger is exhilarating. It isn't a game, but part of him can't help relishing it all the same. He can't remember why he stopped.
Spoiler manages to get free. She manages to ambush Black Mask. She manages to pin him to the ground, gun pointed at his head. But Steph can't pull the trigger. Two months ago she would have, but now Batman's voice is in her head. She can't let him down. Not again.
Stephanie hesitates, and in that moment Black Mask breaks her hold. He gets his gun back. There's no moral code running though the back of his head. He doesn't hesitate.
Gotham is safe. Batman did his job. Damian is back. Robin is in the field again. But Bruce is haunted by what happened. Damian is injured, Tim has nightmares, and Stephanie...
Jason Todd isn't new to being poor. He knows how to be hungry, how to fend for himself. But he is new to being homeless. The gang war left lots of kids in the Narrows orphaned, of course some of them were going to fall through the cracks, and Jason happens to be one of them. Maybe it's for the best. He's heard how the Gotham Foster System treats kids. Maybe he's better off on his own. He just needs to find a way to make some money.
Batman descends with all the furry he's been holding in. But instead of an overconfident car thief, he finds a twelve year old boy desperately clutching a tire iron, trying to seem angry instead of scared.
Bruce recognizes something in him that he can't fully explain. He takes Jason back to the manor. Gives him a home. Does everything he can to keep him away from the cave.
That lasts about two weeks.
Jason wants to give back to his community, to make sure kids don't have to deal with the shit he had to deal with. He wants to thank Bruce for helping him. He wants to be nothing like his dad. He wants to make his new father proud.
Damian is against it. Tim is against it. Bruce is against it. Jason is insistent. He decides to take matters into his own hands, to steal an old Robin suit and sneak out after the others have left. It doesn't go well. He thinks he's blown his chance, but to his surprise Batman relents. If he doesn't Jason will find a way to do it on his own, and he won't let another kid go out untrained.
Tim goes back to Oracle. The way he felt the night of the gang war still scares him sometimes, reminds him to much of Batman back when they first met. Guilt washes over him whenever ever he thinks about it. How happy he'd been, all well Steph...
He should have been in the Clock Tower that night. Should have been keeping better tabs on all of them. He should have known she was missing in action, should have been monitoring her suit's location or trying to reach out instead of just listening when Batman said not to involve her. So if there's a new kid running around in the suit, their suit, he's going to make sure this one is safe.
Robin is good. Really good. He's to angry, he's rash, he's impulsive. But he learns fast, and he seems to almost fly over Gotham. He fits the role in a way Tim never truly did.
Black Mask is dead, and someone else is using his name. Someone who's dismantling the Gotham underworld piece by piece.
Steph has a duty to the people she hurt, a duty Batman will never understand, and one she has to handle her way. Batman stopped the war, but he didn't stop the gangsters. He didn't stop Black Mask, or Scareface, or any of the others. It's not about what they did to her. She deserved it. It was her own fault. But so many others suffered because of them, because of her, and Batman did nothing to stop it. So she will.
Black Mask isn't planning to confront Batman. She doesn't care about him. She's done seeking his approval and following his rules. Doing that got her killed. It got other people killed. But there's another Robin running around, and someone needs to explain that. Steph knows by now that she was never really Robin, it was all just a trick to get Tim back. A trick that worked. So who the hell is this kid? Is he like Tim, someone Batman will keep safe, or is he just another pawn he'll sacrifice the second it's covenant? And when she finally gets around to asking, she lets more slip than she should have.
Batman knows the truth, but that's okay. It was only a matter of time before he did, and it doesn't change anything. Bruce tries to appeal to her, but what can he possibly say that could make a difference? That he's sorry?
He is, but it's to late for that. Stephanie knows the truth. She knows he never took her seriously. She knows he never trusted her. She knows it was all a game, and that in the end Batman got what he wanted even if not in the way he intended. And Bruce can't argue, because she's right. He created her, and he knows it.
Stephanie Brown is dead. She died in Leslie's clinic. She died because her doctor decided teaching Batman a lesson was worth more than her life. A lesson he didn't even bother to learn. She died because she listened to Batman even though he never bothered to listen to her. And she died because Batman used her as a chess piece. Because he wrote her off before she'd even properly begun.
Black Mask is not Cluemaster. She refuse to ever be her father. But she's not Batman either. He never gave her the chance to be. She's something else. Something between those two extremes. Something that's fully hers. She's going to protect the people Batman's to busy to care about, and if she has to kill a few people along the way, so be it. She's not playing by his rules anymore. She never will again.
Black Mask is Batman's greatest failure. Not because she died, but because he never took the time to teach her how to live.
Stephanie is Bruce's biggest regret. Not because she died, but because he didn't care about her until she did.
