So, Dove soap and Lizzo are endorsing KOSA, in the name of "social media is bad for teens' self-esteem" (even though that's bullshit) and I am mad.
If you don't know, long story short KOSA is a bill that's ostensibly one of those "Protect the Children" bills, but what it's actually going to do is more or less require you to scan your fucking face every time you want to go on a website; or give away similarly privacy-violating information like your drivers' license or credit card info.
Either that or force them to censor anything that could even remotely be considered not "kid friendly." Not to mention fundies are openly saying they're gonna use this to hurt trans kids. Which is, uh, real fucking bad.
Given that in terms of their actual products they don't have a direct stake in it, it might be possible to get Dove to rescind this (can't find contact info for Lizzo sadly), if you want to contact Dove about this, here's their contact page.
And, as per usual, I urge you to contact your congresscritters, especially given that as of now (Thursday, 4/13/2023) they plan to re-introduce the bill this Monday, and we're going to need a flood of people saying this is awful to kill it.

I hope people in the OSC (and other fandoms in general) who are ok with or neutral about Kosa realize that not only will we lose a bunch of platforms that allow us to interact with each other (Tumblr, discord, Ao3, Wattpad, Twitter, YouTube, etc) but will also get rid of at least 80-95% of our fandom.
The OSC consists mostly of people between 13-17 who (if Kosa goes through the Senate and Houses of Representatives and gets passed as a law) will most likely no longer have access to YouTube and other social platforms which actively kills almost all the people who read and watch Object Shows!
By visiting and sharing animated shows like II or BFDI those creators make money which gives them the means to keep making their shows and paying their animators, voice actors, writers and so much more. This bill will actively get rid of most of the people who watch these shows which will cause a large loss in support and revenue for these creators and will most likely mean the end for any smaller object show.
Object show comics rely on people sharing them around in fandom spaces since they’re not animated and put on YouTube like animated object shows are. By losing these spaces and the people who support their content these creators will no longer be able to reach a large audience and get the support they need to continue their comics. This means that we will lose a lot of the comics that the OSC has!
Most of the content you see in the OSC is made by minors, which this bill will actively destroy and thus kill this fandom and many others!
So I am begging of you OSC and other communities, Please please please sign petitions, tell your senators and representatives that you don’t want this bill to pass, and tell anyone that you can reach about how this Bill is a violation of privacy and minors' rights! Re-blog anything you see with helpful information about what Kosa is and keep talking about it! We need to tell people about it so that this doesn’t go through the Senate. Remember, the final day is February 26, we don’t have that long!!!
Here’s some helpful resources:

This is a website where you can write to your representatives and call them to stop KOSA from passing. If passed, this bill will negatively impact everyone, especially those in the LGBTQ+ community. I am asking you to please mail your representatives, you only need to put in your information. Call if you can.

I didn't know about KOSA until today so I'm trying to help spread the word too
KOSA stands for Kids Online Safety Act and by wording of the bill would give state attorney generals the power to sue and ban websites that have content that is "harmful and explicit" which is stated in the bill. Sites that would be attacked would be Twitter, A03, Tumblr, Tiktok, and many more and the people that made this bill and are pushing for it have clearly come out to say that they will be using this to ban trans and LGBTQ+ content. They are pushing it as protecting kids online and helping to prevent eating disorders but in reality, it is to censor people and continue the attack on trans and queer people and children. The sponsors of this bill are publically homophobic and transphobic and these same people and offices are also co-sponsoring the Restrict Act.
Tumblr media
If any site has any type of content that contains queer themes, state attorney generals will have the power to take them down.
Tumblr media
Over 100 LGBTQ+ and human organizations expressed concern over this bill that was originally brought up last year and they have repeatedly said that their concerns have not been addressed. They are being actively ignored by the offices that are writing this bill.
Tumblr media
This person on Tiktok explains it all very well
And this is her link tree for petitions and to explain
This is a very important topic and is not getting enough attention. This bill threatens LGBTQ+ and trans children and Republican offices are ignoring organizations that say it's a bad bill. We are on a very slippery slope regarding LGBTQ+ issues
If you can, please reblog. We need to spread the word about this bill

Fighting to continue the era where online communities are free
I understand that some of you are waiting for me to update some fanfics. However, I've been embroiled in what could only be described as a fight for the internet to stay open. For those who aren't aware, there are various bad bills surrounding the internet that are either in committee or on their way to the Senate Floor. They all share one thing in common: overly broad provisions that could lead to mass censorship of various things online and a complete chilling of free expression, especially if you're part of the LGBTQ+ community or other marginalized groups. I've already spoken about these bills on this blog and the fact there are talks of a possible package being made is continuing this discussion. Thankfully, I'm not alone in this fight. EFF, Fight for The Future, and the ACLU are all fighting against the bills and starting Thursday, will bring out a mass protest. That said, the protest can only get big if you guys come in. That's why I'm making this post.
These are blog posts made by two of the organizations I mentioned. They both hold petitions for you to sign in order to oppose these bills, but the latter site made by Fight For The Future allows you to actually call your lawmakers so you could tell them to oppose these bills. They give you scripts and everything. The deadline given by the organizations is July 28th, which is when the Senate is supposed to go into recess. If we can prevent any of these bills from going through before that, we can consider it a mission accomplished. If you need more info on some of these bills, let me provide you with some Linktrees.
I know it feels like I'm asking a lot from you guys, but I hope you can do what you can and spread this around. We're facing a massive wave of bad news and we've seen a glimpse of what could happen thanks to the DDOS of AO3, but we cannot let ourselves be toppled over by them. We have to push back and ensure a better future for ourselves, the people around us, and the children who deserve to gain a free voice in the future.

I've said it once, I will say it again. Censorship will NEVER be equivalent to safety.
I swear this country gets more and more regressive, strict, and dictatorship-like by the day at this point. And it. Is. DISGUSTING.
I cannot wait for the younger generation to take over because they actually give a damn and know how things work.

Random question, what’s the likeliness KOSA will be added to the faa bill?
Hard to say personally. On one hand, they said before that they dont want the faa to be treated like a christmas tree, where any lawmaker can try to attach a law onto it in order to pass. Also there's word that the version of KOSA thats attempting to get attached to the faa is not harmonised with the version that was discussed in the house, so there could be some issue there.
On the other hand, the chances of it getting attached is more than 0%, so you should probably call your government reps and spread awareness when you can.

We've all watched in horror as red states have banned books in schools and libraries. We've seen teachers fired merely for reading a book about gender identity, or for discussing their own families. We've seen school libraries turned into discipline centers. People who claim to support parental rights and liberty have been waging a war against supportive parents and free expression, and the ultimate goal is to push LGBTQIA+ stories and lives back into the closet, by any means necessary.
For now at least, you can still talk freely about being trans or queer on the Internet, without fear of overt censorship*. You might well face online harassment and violent threats, and you might even face real-world consequences if you get on the radar of the worst people. But the Internet does not suppress the trans and queer stories that are being violently removed from schools, libraries, and other public spaces in much of the country right now.
That's about to change — unless we all take action.

UPDATE: KOSA was not added to the bill, losing by a resounding 85-12. We've won the battle, but the war is not over! Don't! Let! Up!
