(sorry if you’ve answered this before) who are your top ten favorite black clover characters and ships (platonic or romantic)? talk about them!

I actually haven't gotten this question before. Thanks for giving me an excuse to talk about them, anon ^_^

My Top Ten Favorite Characters are

1. Asta

I think part of the reason why I love Asta a lot stems from the fact that my expectations for Black Clover were pretty low. A lot of people complained about Asta's voice and personality so I thought I would just have to do my best to ignore Asta. But his voice didn't bother me and I'm glad I watched it because I love Asta.

I also love Asta because what's not to love about him. He's such a lovable goofball and he reminds me of myself when I was his age. Not to mention, I love turning on Black Clover when I'm exercising because it's easier for me to stay motivated to keep going.

2. Finral

I love Finral so much. He's such a nice guy and such a wet cat of a human being.

Also, I'm used to characters like Finral being annoying and perverted and that's what I expected when he was first on screen. But he's exact opposite. It's obvious that he's just a touch starved guy. To use an example, when Finral learned that Nero was actually a girl and he immediately flirts and just as quickly apologizes for it.

3. Yami

HE'S SO WEIRD in the best way possible. He kinda just does whatever he wants and doesn't let anything stop him.

Not to mention, as a neurodivergent person, it's nice to see an adult in powerful position give a chance to the weirdos and outcasts of the world.

4. Mereoleona

She's weird in her own way. She decided that instead of joining the Crimson Lions to just... live alone in the wilderness. Iconic.

Then when Fuegoleon was in a coma, she makes fun of him in the way that older sisters do. Like Yami, she just kinda does whatever she wants, sees the potential in people no matter their walk of life, and cares deeply for her squad and her little brothers.

5. Vanessa

Vanessa has a lot of personality traits that I wish I had. She's pretty laid back, takes shit from no one, caring, and can stand up for herself. I stress myself out a lot in life and it's honestly gotten in the way of me forming some friendships and has made me a yes woman when I really shouldn't.

6. Leopold

I want to put him in my pocket. He's so cute and nerdy. He loves competition and cares a lot for his friends. Also he reminds me a lot of a few friends I had in middle school.

7. Mimosa

Mimosa is really sweet but she still has other parts to her personality. She's gets annoyed at her brother a lot. I also relate to the fact that she sometimes is just really mean on accident. She can't read people's emotions to save her life.

I also really like the fact that she's a healer but treated with respect. I'm used to characters like her just being thrown in the background and portrayed only as weak and expendable. But she's give her moments to shine and the fact that she's in the Golden Dawn is proof of that.

8. Noelle

I didn't think I would like her when I first started watching Black Clover. Characters like her are typically one dimensional, shoved in the background, and are simply just the main character's love interest. But Noelle is different. She stands on her own two feet and can snap a bone when she needs to.

9. Yuno

I just think he's neat.

10. Klaus

From the Golden Dawn trio, I feel like Klaus is the straight man out of them. He's pretty calm but he does have his intense moments.

Honorable mentions: Luck, Zora, Fuegoleon, Rill, Julius, Liebe, Nacht, Gordon, and Dorothy.

My Favorite Ships are

1. Magluck (Magna/Luck)

I'm actually pretty sad that this ship isn't that popular. I started shipping them pretty early in the show. I think I started shipping them in Arc 5 (Seabed Temple Arc) but I was completely sold on their relationship after this hug.

2. MarsFana (Mars/Fana)

Not much to say here. These two have a very simple but nice romance. It's a very cookie cutter romance and some times that's all a romance needs to be. It's really hard to ruin childhood friends to lovers anyway.

I'd love to see more of them though considering how important they were in the beginning.

3. Finral x Finesse (do these guys have a ship name?)

I know that this ship isn't really popular and it makes sense. Finesse was added later in the show and. But I think she's good for Finral and it's clear he loves her. His devotion to change is strong and is another reason why I love him.

I don't have a lot a romantic ships for this show. Some honorable mentions: Astelle (Asta/Noelle), Greyche (Grey/Gauche)

My Favorite Platonic Ships are

1. Finral and Vanessa

These two share one (1) braincell and I love it.

Not to mention I love their parallels. They're both very flirty and come from a family that treated them poorly because of their magic. For Vanessa, Witch Queen saw potential in Vanessa and locked her away while Finral's skills were overlooked in favor of bother's. Vanessa is more confident while Finral is pretty cowardly. Their similarities and differences really help to balance their relationship and it works very well.

I also like when they fight together because it feels very much like they step up to the role of being Asta's older siblings.

I'm also just a huge sucker for physically affectionate m/f friendships.

2. Gauche, Gordon, and Grey

The trio I didn't know I wanted but the one I needed.

So while it's clear that Gordon and Grey are pretty similar to each other, Gauche is a great addition. They're the least social characters in the show and while Gordon and Grey want to make more friends, Gauche wants to push people away. Also, as the story progresses, it's clear that Gauche is starting to care about the Black Bulls, especially Grey and Gordon.

I think the best way to describe it, they remind me of the "they asked for no pickles" meme.

3. Asta and Leopold

As mentioned, Leopold reminds me of friends I made in middle school and Asta reminds me of me. So their relationship feels more personal to me. They clearly love each other and both encourage each other to do better.

4. Asta and Yuno

They both parallel each other in the way that Vanessa and Finral do. Asta represents the journey of hard work while Yuno represents the journey of natural talent. They constantly challenge each other in a way that no one else could do and neither of them would be where they are today without the other.

I sure do parallels.

5. Vanessa and Luck

These two are criminally underrated. Vanessa is definitely the Black Bulls' older sister but her relationship with Luck just hits different. She loves him and he clearly thinks highly of her too (in his own special way).

6. Nero and Lumiere

Lumiere is such a dork rivaled only by Julius and Nero keeps to herself for the most part but she is clearly soft for him and I really like that. In fact, in a flashback, Lumiere annotated a part in a book that said something like "Secre would love this."

7. Vanessa and Magna

Vanessa clearly enjoys poking fun and getting a rise out of Magna. But despite their bickering, they do like each other. You don't have to twist their arm if it came to helping them train.

8. Klaus and Asta

I like their relationship in the anime more than in the manga. Klaus worries and thinks about Asta a lot more in the anime more than magna. He also becomes the mom friend™️ when it comes to Asta.

9. Yami and Jack

These two are just really silly by themselves and together, their chaotic behaviors increases tenfold.

10. Sol and Magna

I'm putting these two last because they're not really friends (and I don't like Sol all that much) but they have potential. During the tournament arc, their bickering reminded me a lot of my siblings and I when we were teenagers-early twenties.

“ You’re an idiot.” Yuno said as he watched his friend try a new fighting move, which ended up failing miserably. They grinned before walking over to him.

“ But you love me!” They said with a giggle, causing Yuno to smile and shake his head at them.

“ Do it again, and this time try to stay on your feet.”

“ Alright, alright Mr. Grumpy!” They said with a small pout before they pulled out their grimoire and began to try the fighting move once again. From a distance Klaus, Mimosa, and William were watching with curious gazes but knowing smiles.

“ I haven’t seen him smile like that in ages,” Klaus said as he watched them and Mimosa nodded in agreement.

“ Not since Zenon attacked the Base.” Mimosa agreed and William looked from Yuno and his friend to Klaus and Mimosa.

“ I think that means he’s healing, and that he’s letting go of the guilt from that day.” William said as the other two nodded in agreement. “ Come on, let’s leave them be.”

The three began to walk away to give the two some privacy, as they had a feeling Yuno had something very important to tell his friend.

As Yuno watched them practice over and over again his mind kept wandering. How could he tell them? He had practiced so many different ways to tell them how he was feeling but none of them seemed…right. You only confessed your feelings to the love of your life once right? So, in Yuno’s mind, it needed to be absolutely perfect.

But the more he watched them, the more he realized that the confession didn’t need to be perfect or this big grandiose thing. They were a simple person who preferred a home made gift as opposed to something store bought. They liked a home cooked meal over some fancy restaurant. They were…simple.

“ I love you.” He shouted at them so he could be heard over the spell, they stopped what they were doing and looked at him with a smile.

“ I love you too!”

“ No, I mean…I really love you, I always have, ever since we were ids.” He confessed loudly and sincerely, causing his friends smile to slip from their face at his words.

“ You…what?” They asked softly, their voice full of surprise. Yuno felt his cheeks burn slightly, he hadn’t meant to blurt it out or to be so loud but…what’s done is done, and he didn’t regret it for a moment.

“ I love you, I really love-!” Yuno began to say again, but before he could even finish his sentence he watched them run up to him with a bright smile on their face.

“ I love you too! I really, really love you!” They said gleefully as they wrapped their arms around his neck and their legs around his middle. “ I thought I would have to keep my real feelings to myself forever! But I’m so glad you feel the same way!” They added tearfully as they rested their head on his shoulder.

Yuno wrapped his arms around them, he had no idea that they liked him the same way. He thought that they were just that way with everyone, but as he thought about it he realized all the signs were there, and he just missed them or ignored them entirely.

“ I’m sorry I kept you waiting.”

Julius Novachrono

When the magic emperor had to fight, it meant that the battle was pretty serious. You could barely see him, only streaks of light flashing in the sky. He was so focused on protecting the citizens as well as fighting the assailant that his magic accidentally hit you instead. He had too much on his plate; even turning the time back was too late by the time he noticed.

Thankfully you were still alive, and Julius apologised to you thousands of times. He felt so so bad; at the moment he hurt you, he still had to carry the responsibility of the king and was unable to come to you immediately.

He made sure you were nursed back to health properly, and personally changed your bandage and applied any ointment on your wounds when needed.

He wished he could exchange his position with you so he could be in pain for you. It was tormenting to watch you suffer because of him.

A part of him actually broke inside because of this incident; he had no idea how he could have done better. He was protecting the kingdom but in exchange, he had hurt you. He wondered if he even deserved you at some point.

You were not allowed to go on the battle field if he had to fight. You tried to protest, saying you were a magic knight and it was your responsibility.

"If I know that you're out there honey, I will not be able to focus my 100%. And that wouldn't be good.." he explained. And you had to oblige.

William Vangeance

The golden dawn was activated for an emergency because some intruders were trying to go pass the borders.

William activated his world tree magic, but along the way, you got hurt by the tree. It was trying to get to the enemy but he was fast, and you got attacked by Willam's magic instead.

Klaus saw the ordeal and rushed to his Captain for help.

By the time William arrived and released his magic, it was a little too late. You were unconscious. He knelt there, holding you, shouting for klaus to get mimosa as quickly as possible.

You were okay, but it would take some time for you to recover fully. After all, you nearly escaped death.

William blamed himself endlessly. He blamed himself for being careless, for not being good enough.

He felt so relieved when you woke up that he had tears in his eyes and he apologised to you over and over.

For the next few days, he would still apologise out of the blue and would have tears in his eyes. He never left your side and took care of your everything for you.

He wiped you down, he helped you to the washroom, he brought you whatever you wanted to eat. He was basically like your servant until you recovered.

And you let him be, because you knew that would make him feel slightly better.

Nozel Silva

It wasn't even on accident. He didn't have a choice. You were possessed by an elf and you were destroying everything in your way.

Nozel couldn't do it at first, but at one point, you regained your mind and there was tears in your eyes as you met with Nozel's.

"Just kill me, Nozel." you cried out before you were taken over again.

He didn't kill you of course. But you were hurt so badly. As the elf had no choice but to leave your close to lifeless body, Nozel quickly caught you.

He held you close to his chest as his heart ached so badly. His teeth were clenched together as he muttered "sorry"

He has never left your hospital room until you were awake. He ordered for servants to bring all his clothes, work and even send meals to your room.

"Are you feeling pain anywhere?" "Does your wound hurt?" "Do you need anything now?" he bombarded you with questions the moment you were awake.

Are you assured him you were fine, he took your hand in his and pulled it to his lips to give you a gentle kiss. This man will actually carry this guilt with him for a very long time. You had to give him a lot of assurance until he forgave himself for it.

Ideas for Combination Magickodahs

So, I was considering some ideas of combination magic, in part because it's a pity some of these combinations will likely never see the light of Black Clover's pages or the Black Clover Mobile game, or even the anime. To be honest, they aren't that well thought-out, but, eh. You can still use 'em if you want.

Trap Magic x Mist Magic -- Trapper's Confusion

A thick mist spreads across an area, underwhich are concealed traps which can't be sensed because their mana signature is concealed by the mist magic. Furthermore, illusions of Nebra and Zora clones pop up randomly to distract the opposition. Works better on strangers.

World Tree Magic x Fire Magic -- Inferno ex Elysium / Forest Phoenix

(Specifically for William and Mereoleona)

A giant form of a floral phoenix initially creates an animated barrier between the allies and the opposition. From the back of the phoenix, plantlife starts sprouting an a soothing aura spreads, healing/regenerating the allies. But then the front catches on fire, the giant bird claps its wings in the face of the opposition, and spreads fire on the oppositions half of the battlefield, causing burn damage, creating immense heat on one half of the battlefield and overall creating an inhospitable environment that acts to drain the opposition of mana. The bird may then attack for as long as it is boosted by both users magic -- which may require extra prep-time.

Light Magic x Sealing Magic - Light Purgatory / Sealed Sanctuary

One is a form of restraining magic which can restrain multiple enemies in an area of brilliant, blinding light where they may even die if trapped too long. The other is a protective, barrier spell which also doubles as a healing spell.

Mirror Magic x Transformation Magic - Mirror Metamorphosis

A combination of Gauche's and Grey's magic, which gives each user a mirror. Whatever reflection they see in it is the form they can take -- it can also function as a means of creating clones of someone you have seen but isn't present in the battlefield, but Grey/Gauche needs to have seen them before.

Mirror Magic x Mist Magic - Hall of Mirrors

Creates a confusing mase of mirrors which seeks to disorient the opposition through presenting illusions of mages that look like they are standing there as the mirror aspect of it can't really be seen -- it can also create physical duplicates/clones of the allies.

Mercury Magic x Dream Magic - Toxic Dreamscape

Basically, it traps the opposition into a sort of nightmare scape that is the result fo combining mercury magic and dream magic. It can disorient, de-buff, restrain and even kill the opposition, especially the longer they last there. Also, you have a greater chance of being poisoned by breathing in mercury gas which is in the surrounding air. But allies are provided with gas masks.

Water Spirit Magic x Song Magic - (1) Oceans Lullaby, (2) Twin Sirens

(1) Creates a song/water barrier with healing properties spreading through the inside of the barrier. Radius depends on how much mana is available among other factors.

(2) Utilising Undine, and ultimate magic, it allows both Noelle and Kahono to tranform provided they both have sufficient mana. Kahono's side of the spell gives the transformation de-buff/incapacitate abilities (through allowing both users to "sing" people either to sleep/insanity/etc) and offensive powers come from Noelle's side of the spell. On the other hand, if one of the transformation fails, the other does too.

Antimagic x Fire Magic - Antifire/Inflammable Hellscape

Turns out inflammable just means it catches fire easily. So yeah, it's very firey, and prevents the establishment of the opposition's magical spells through being overpowering both in terms of anti magic and firemagic.

Plant Magic / Steel Magic - Steel Garden

Mimosa and Klaus' magic combined to create a garden of steel flowers which defend and heal the allies, while showing their steel thorns to the enemy. The steel flowers can also spread and become a menace by hijacking the enemies spells through their steel seeds which then blossom into flowers and control the spell to Mimosa & Klaus' liking instead.

Fire Magic x Snow Magic - (1) Volatile Weather (2) Cosy Winter Wonderland

(1) Creates extreme and fluctuating weather events that require the opposition to use mana for mana skins thus draining them of their mana. It can also inflict burn/freeze damage on the enemy - might even set them on fire/cause frostbite. The allies are protected by a combination of fire and snow mana skin that works in tandem with the changing climate.

(2) Creates a beautiful but lethal winter wonderland using Fragil's side of the spell which can incapacitate or weaken the enemy, and allows for heated defensive armour (with lions on it) from Fuego's side of the spell to be used for the allies.

Lightning x Scissor Magic - Scissor Blitz

Scissors made of lightning come blitzing down on the opposition, attacking them from various sides. It's a fast and therefore hard to dodge attack. (Also Helene Barbary has scissor magic. Pity she isn't a magic knight. Maybe with some training her magic could be pretty overpowered, considering what Jack's magic could do.)

Paint Magic x Food Magic - Divine Desserts

Through food art, fields of icing and seas of sticky toffee, and cream incapacitate or slow down the enemy, while being a source of mana regeneration and a certain degree of immortality for the allies (allies might report feeling more youthful/rejuvenated, too). This can also allow for the spell to potentially be endless, unless Charmy is taken out.

Paint Magic x Cotton Magic - (1) Sheep Gods / (2) Painting Sheep

(1) Creates Gods shaped like sheep which pummel the enemy using a mixture of paint and cotton magic.

(2) Charmy's cotton sheep function as sort of assistant painters who borrow from Rill's specific attribute in order to be able to use the spells he can use. Depending on how much of Rill's mana they have soaked up in their wool - which can be seen by how paint covered their wool is - they can continue casting Rill's spells even after Rill's lost the ability to, and can since there's more of them, it means they can attack from more sides. They may further be boosted by good magic.

BLACK CLOVER HEADCANONS

Ships addition

The ships in question: Vanica x Megicula ( VanMeg?), Yuno x Leo ( YuLeo?), Lolopechka x Gadjah, Asta x Noelle (asunoe)

The hc will be on : 🌑Nightmares, 💍 Wedding day, 🧒 Kids, ❤ Love language and 🏀 activities they like to do together

ASTA x NOELLE

🌑: both Asta and Noelle have their fare amount

Of Nightmares, so whenever one of them as a Nightmare the other will do their best to calm the other down and ground them. Then they will probably cuddle and if that is not enough they will go star gazing

💍: Asta and Noelle's wedding day was large and grand even tho it happened in Hage. Asta's grommets were: Yuno, Magna, Leo, Luck and Gadjah while Noelle's on the other hand were Lolopechka, Mimosa, Nero, Kahono, and Vanessa!

While waiting for Noelle to walk down the aisle Asta was sweating like an animal bc he was worried that Noelle was taking to long and that something had happened. But Gadjah assured him that it was normal for the bride to come in later, so when Noelle came in with Yami by her side and the girls right behind her he broke down and started crying(p.s they hadn't seen each other before the wedding)

🧒: Noelle and Asta have two children an older girl named Acier and a boy named Isaac with a 5 years differences. Acier has long grey hair like Licita and has green and pink eyes, her magic is like her uncle Mercury and she serves in the silver eagles alongside her mother. Isaac on the other hand has short straight silver hair and green eyes, his magic in contrast to his sis is water and services in the bbs

❤: Asta's love language is both physically touch and acts of service. Bc my boy never learned what boundaries are so he can and will cuddle for hours on end and acts of service...dos it really need an explosion?

Noelle's love language on the other hand is just acts of service and maybe quality time? Idk bc of her childhood she never learned how to properly react to affection none the less give it to someone else( but asta, lolo and Mimosa are doing their best to help)

🏀: Asta and Noelle are both very physically active and they enjoy sparring, working out just anything that requires movement and that applies to their kids as well

YUNO x LEO

🌑: The one that was Nightmares not the most but entirely in there relationship is Yuno his Nightmares are not rare but they aren't common either they mostly revolve around the Zeno vs GD fight. What Leo dose in order to calm yuno down is hug him for you see Leo is like a warm blanket he may be sorter but he sure as hell is wider

💍: To many people surprise there wedding happened at the heart kingdom bc Leo was scared that his grandparents were going to crash it. So Lolo being the sweetest big sis she is agreed immediately, and so there wedding happened on the beach bc Leo and lolo have style+ Leo's grommets were: Randell, Luck, Gareth and Floga, while Yuno's where: Klaus, langris, David and Asta.

🧒: To cut a long story short, Yuno and Leo do eventually want to adopt kids but first they need to deal with both Leo's grandparents and see exactly what is going to happen with Yuno's heritage to the Spade thrown and go from there.

❤: Now in terms of love language Yuno is a Corben copy of Asta the only man difference between the two is that Yuno knows what boundaries are. Leo's love language is physical touch and quality time and I don't think that really needs an expansion. Like man's will make you feel like royalty and like you are the center of the world

🏀: In their spare time I feel like they would either train or sit in front of the fireplace cuddle up in blankets with a cup of tea ( Yuno) and a cup of hot chocolate (Leo).

LOLOPECHKA x GADJAH

🌑: Ok now look Gadjah is one of the lucky mf on the planet like he has no idea what experiencing a Nightmare is like bc he as never EVER had one ( and he never will ). But now Lolo on the other hand as Nightmares almost every night, now most of the nightmares Lolo does have are normally pretty tame but there are those times when they are not tame like at all. In those times Lolo panics like a lot and if nothing is done she will have an all-out panic attack so Gadjah does his best to came her down insert lots of cuddles, head pats and hot chocolate.

💍: So when Gadjah and Lolo got married it was like the entire kingdom was having a large Festival although the only people that were allowed in the era of the wedding, were those that were invited. Gadjah's grommets were: Floga, Smurik, Potrof, asta and luck while lolo's were Noelle , Nero, Mimosa, Kahono and Sarado. ( Ps a handful of days before the wedding many of the people left gifts and cards with well-wishes in front of the palace, lolo broke down and Gadjah almost cried )

🧒: Because of the law that all the Heart Queens must conform to they can not have any biological children. So after an attack on a research facility that did illegal experiments on children with special magic attributes, there was only one survivor a young girl with bright orange hair, ocean blue eyes and plasma magic named Freya who they end up adopting

❤️: As for Love language Gadjah is one smooth-ass bastard so words of affirmation and acts of service which is Self-explanatory. And for our beloved Lolo, we have physically touch like she will smother Gadjah to the point that he will not know what to do with himself and quality time, she is willing to do anything but her work

🏀: when they are not working they enjoy taking long nature walks which was one of the first family activities they did along with Freya! But beyond that love to cuddle with each other

VANICA x MEGICULA

🌑: Very similar to Lolo, Vanica has had nightmares even night since she was young ( like 4-5). But because of that, she was grown used to the feeling of waking up in cold sweat so in the unlikely event that she does in fact have a nightmare that scars her that much Megi will make her a hot chocolate and cuddle her to sleep. Now if it is the other way around and Megi is the one having them then she goes into full panic mode and vanica needs to sing to her. Vanica doesn't know why but it always seems to soothe her

💍: although yes they legally are married they didn't have a wedding! They just went down to Damantios's office on a Tuesday and some signed papers later there married. But granted Asta did give them the week off sooo

🧒: Alright, so out of everyone in this list vanica and megicula are the ones with the most kids coming in with 3! The oldest a boy named Arthur, with long wavy black hair and bright red eyes who in fact has two magic types soul, and curses warding. The two others are Twins named Anastasia and Julius, they both have short straight white hair and dark red eyes, similarly to Arthur they both have two magic types for Ana we have cursed blood and devil bone magic while Julius has cursed blood and devil spatial magic. Ironically enough Ana is in the silver eagles with Acier, Julius is in the black bulls with Isaac ( they are bffs) and Arthur is in the research facilities with Meg ( ps he has a thing of Acier)

❤️: Now love language is a little difficult I can imagine Vanica would be physical touch and quality time so she can spoil the hell out of Meg both physically and materially. As for Meg, I would say acts of service and quality time now similar to Noelle Meg was never good at expressing love and affection but Vanica, Sally and Makusa have helped a lot.

🏀: As of things they like to do together Vanica loves helping Meg brainstorm ideas for new curses. They will sit for hours on end talking about new ideas. Another thing they enjoy is cuddling and when the kids join in it is even better.

Author's Note: Hello and welcome. This is my long-awaited season three fic and I will be posting daily.

Warnings: Season 3 spoilers, slightly long post, cursing, and mention of abuse (if you squint hard enough).

On the 12th hour of the first day of October 1989, 16 women around the world gave birth. This was unusual only in the fact that none of these women had been pregnant when the day first began. Sir Reginald Hargreeves, eccentric billionaire and adventurer, resolved to locate and adopt as many of the children as possible.

He got seven of them.

It was morning now. Klaus and Diego were watching little Stanley as Five and Karina retrieved their breakfast.

"That little delinquent is your son?" Klaus asked Diego, obviously holding back his amusement.

"Allegedly my son," Diego corrected him flatly.

Klaus laughed now. "That's so funny!"

"Wait, who's…who's the mother?" Five frowned as the two joined them at the table.

"Lila," Diego casually replied.

"Excuse me?" Klaus stared at him.

"Whoa, Lila's here?" Five was stunned.

"Since when did she get here?" Karina added, though she glanced at Stan and then Diego in confusion. More or less confused by the genetic/biological side of their relations.

"Was," Diego corrected again. "She dropped him off in my lap last night then bolted."

"I don't much care for that one," Klaus commented.

"Don't," Diego held a finger up.

"Technically, she's family," Five pointed out.

"She was trying to murder us, like, yesterday!" Klaus exclaimed.

"Yeah, like I said, "family"," Five retorted.

"Diego, is she coming back?" Karina inquired.

"Well, she goddamn better be because we got more important things to be dealing with right now!" Diego shouted to Stanley.

"Calm down. Shh!" Klaus hushed him.

"Where's Luther?" Viktor walked up to the table.

"Who cares? Probably out for…a run," Diego paused when he noticed his new appearance.

"Mmm! Love the haircut," Klaus complimented as Five eyed Viktor thoughtfully, taking a sip of his mimosa.

Viktor smiled softly. "So I, uh, talked to Marcus last night."

"Wait, what? You talked with the enemy?" Diego questioned. "By yourself?"

"Somebody had to do something," Viktor replied.

"Who elected you, Vanya?"

"It's, uh, Viktor," Viktor corrected Diego.

"Who's Viktor?"

The four then looked at Viktor in slow realization.

"I am. It's who I've always been," Viktor said, glancing around at them. "Uh, is that an issue for anyone?"

"Nah, I'm good with it," Diego replied.

"Yeah, me too. Cool," Klaus agreed.

"Proud of you," Karina winked at him, taking a sip of her mimosa as well.

"Truly happy for you, Viktor," Five rounded out the compliments. "But last time I checked, you don't speak for this family."

"Okay, well, it's fine, okay?" Viktor returned, sitting down with them. "Marcus totally gets it. He doesn't want a war any more than we do."

Diego quickly shook his head. "What are you talking about? He tried to homicide us!"

"So did Lila, and you had a kid with her," Klaus shot.

"That's not the point!" Diego shot back.

"We made a deal," Viktor continued. "He's gonna give back Five's briefcase, then we're gonna get out of the timeline. We're gonna meet later today for the, uh, the handover."

"Oh, thank God!" Klaus applauded while Five was in disbelief.

"That's a rookie move. Dude is playing you," Diego scoffed.

Viktor eyed him. "Oh, really?"

"Yeah, but maybe we can use this. And we turn it back on them, and then we wipe them the hell out."

"Diego, stop, please," Viktor was exasperated. "And you're not gonna, like, do anything today."

"Except bond with your spawn," Klaus patted Diego's shoulder.

"Alleged spawn."

"I will get the briefcase, and then we will all go back and fix the timeline," Viktor announced.

"Hey, we're not going anywhere!" Five cut in. "This is a perfectly acceptable timeline!"

"Yeah, why don't you tell that to Allison, who's upstairs grieving her daughter, who doesn't even exist here!" Viktor remarked.

"He has a point, we really did want to meet Claire," Karina slowly admitted.

"Not to mention, we've been replaced by a bunch of blobs and cubes and birds and shit!" Diego added rather loudly.

"News flash, geniuses! It's not about us!" Five announced, shooting Karina an apologetic glance from his outburst. "Take a look around. If you hadn't noticed, there's no doomsday. There's no apocalypse. The sun is shining. Birds are doing whatever the hell birds do. That's all that matters. We're done messing with time." He grabbed his glass before glancing at Karina. "And I don't know about you, my darling, but I'm officially retired." He got up and left to go back to the buffet.

"Is he wearing aftershave?" Klaus questioned in Five's wake. "I'm concerned."

"What about you?" Diego eyed Karina.

"As insufferable as this timeline may be, I understand where he's coming from and not going to lie, I want to be done with time traveling too," she replied. "Though my only downside is I won't have a chance to reunite with my mother ever again. But, who am I kidding, I came to terms with that years ago."

"Because of your um…history with The Commission?" Viktor looked at her sympathetically.

"Unfortunately. Wasn't really fond of the idea of putting a target on my mother's head."

And with that, she quickly followed after Five. She made it over to his side when suddenly the electricity went out. Everyone groaned as Five and Karina looked around in confusion before everything went back up.

"Hey," Klaus whispered to Five. "What do you say we get outta here, huh? Take a little…road trip."

"What are you talking about?" Five started to fill up his plate with food again. Karina went off to get some more fruit.

"I'm talking about a sojourn to the countryside. You and me, the wind in our hair. Thelma and Louise on the open road," Klaus grinned.

"You know they die in the end, right?" Karina eyed him.

"Holding hands, living our best life, my little cherub!" Klaus continued in a whisper to both of them, "Listen to me. I nearly died from Luther's sleep farts last night. We need to get out of here, get some fresh air! Hell, Karina should join us! I don't want to keep you lil love doves apart!"

Five and Karina turned to face him.

"Sounds fun, actually," Karina shrugged. "Could do with a change of scenery for once in my life."

"Okay, I'll bite. Why us, Klaus?" Five questioned.

"Because you said…you said you're retired, and that's what retired people do," Klaus replied. "And don't you two deserve some fun?"

Karina didn't hear that. She was too busy staring at the empty lobster tank in confusion and concern.

"Um…Five…?" she tapped his arm.

"Yes, my angel?" he returned.

She pointed to the tank. "Are my eyes playing tricks on me or do you see it, too? Or rather, not, see it…?"

"There's no lobsters," Five observed in slight disbelief.

"Excuse me?" Klaus asked.

"There were three lobsters in that tank a minute ago," Karina blinked.

"Yeah, well, you know, maybe Chet blended 'em into a morning smoothie," Klaus dismissed them.

Five looked at him and smiled. "You're an idiot, but we're in."

"Whoo!" Klaus cheered enthusiastically. "Come on. We'll get a few road sodas for the journey. Sometimes, you gotta clear the head out," he rambled as he, Five, and Karina began to head off.

"Guys, wait. Where are you going?" Viktor asked them.

"Get the rats out of the maze, you know?" Klaus continued, not knowing he had spoken to them.

"Come on," Five nudged him.

Karina glanced back at Viktor. "We're going on the road for a bit. We'll be back. Good luck with Marcus."

If Viktor wasn't meeting up with the Number One of the Sparrows, she would have suggested inviting him too, but, unfortunately he had to miss out this time.

~ * ~

So here the three were. Cruising down a countryside road in a car they borrowed from the hotel. Five was in the passenger seat, Karina was in the back reading a book, and Klaus was (safely) driving. "The Oogum Boogum Song" by Brenton Wood was playing over the radio.

"This actually isn't so terrible," Five admitted.

"See? Told you," Klaus returned.

"Come to think of it, my whole life I've been under the gun," Five mused. "Missions for Dad, working for the Commission, trying to survive the apocalypse. I was always looking around every corner, just waiting for the other shoe to drop. It's nice to just breathe."

"Good for you, man. Retirement is suiting you," Klaus nodded.

"It is nice to get out and just be for a little bit," Karina added, flipping a page.

"Maybe someday we can actually have a proper wedding," Five put in, glancing at her through the rear view mirror.

She smiled softly. "Maybe."

"Oh! Uh…All right!" he jumped and reached down to pull out a map. "So, I've circled all the roadside attractions along the way."

"I'm not sure we're gonna have time-" Klaus hesitated.

"We have the Brownsville Big Nickel. Oh, Ricky's Bakery has award-winning pies."

"Well, if you just let me explain…"

"Or there's this Cow Henge. That's it-don't-"

"Listen to me. Just shut up for two seconds, okay?" Klaus spoke over him loudly.

Five paused some and Karina glanced up, intrigued to hear this.

"Just two seconds? All right?" Klaus requested.

"Okay, I'm all ears," Five rather sarcastically replied, shooting him a look.

"We…are going to Pennsylvania…to find…my birth mother!" Klaus announced. Yay!"

"Excuse me?" Five and Karina both stared at him, stunned.

"I'm sorry, okay? I'm sorry. I just needed somebody or somebodies to come with me for emotional support," Klaus apologized.

"Oh, emotional support, like a Schnauzer?" Five shot.

"Yeah, yeah, and I knew you wouldn't come if I told you, more or less Karina, so what was I supposed to do?"

"You're goddamn right I wouldn't have come, Klaus!" Five scoffed. "You know why? Because I am supposed to be retired!" he rather aggressively continued.

"I know!" Klaus returned.

"Eh, I'm Switzerland in this fight," Karina put in and Klaus snorted.

"This was supposed to be a carefree road trip," Five commented.

"Well, it still can be, babe," Klaus casually returned.

Five eyed a roadside sign. "Ball of Twine? Klaus, turn! Ball of Twine!" he suddenly grabbed the steering wheel. "Turn!"

"What? Five!" Klaus exclaimed.

"Five! You're gonna land us in a ditch, my doll!" Karina cried as the tires on the car screeched and jerked everyone.

"It is one of the best ones! Come on!" Five shouted.

"Five, we're gonna die!" Klaus was freaking out. "Whoo!"

"Five, good Lord, chill out!" Karina told him as he cut off two other cars and they honked at him.

"I don't care, Klaus! Let go!" Five continued. "You know what? No twine, no birth mother!" he declared.

~ * ~

As a result of Five's bold, reckless driving…the three were now standing and staring at the Ball of Twine.

"Yeah, you know. I don't know why, but I thought it'd be a lot bigger," Klaus admitted thoughtfully.

"Seems pretty big to me," Karina shrugged, blushing ever so slightly when she felt Five's fingers lace around hers.

"Ehh. Here's the real question," Five said. "How do you know your birth mother is in Pennsylvania?" he looked at his brother curiously.

"Well, because I was on the ass end of a two-week bender, and I can't tell you the exact date because we were boofing Xanax and the whole business, but Amy Winehouse was at the top of the charts. So that puts us somewhere, where? In the mid to late aughts?" Klaus started the explanation. "I helped myself into Dad's office, looking for the key to his safe 'cause he had Pogo lock up all the stealables. But instead, I found a treasure trove of our family history told in expired check stubs." He paused for a second. "I was too messed up to, uh, do anything about it, too scared to look her up. But always in the back of my mind, I wondered why she sold me off for three grand. I mean, come on, she couldn't have held out for five? Six?"

"You see anything about my mother?" Five was blankly staring at the ball of twine.

"No. Sorry," Klaus was genuinely sorry.

He turned to look at him again, but he was curious. "Why now?"

"Well, duh. Dad disowns us. Grace isn't Grace. Ben's…gone. Now just felt like a good a time as any to find out who I could've been if I didn't grow up in this stupid family," Klaus lamented.

"Well, can you really call what we had a family?" Five pointed out.

"No. It's more like a-" Klaus began.

"…Institute for Snarky Delinquents," Five finished for him and Klaus laughed from that. "And not a good one at that," Five added.

"But what is family? What is it?" Klaus asked. "It's like some kind of giant…ball of twine that can never be untangled."

"A giant ball of obligation I've been pushing uphill my entire life," Five chimed in.

"A giant ball I've hopelessly tried to hold onto and keep together," Karina muttered.

"Yeah. And the older you get, the bigger it gets."

"And the more you try and untangle it…You watch it roll down the hill…you lose it all and can never make it the same again," all three ended in unison.

"And what's the point?!" Klaus exclaimed. He looked at Karina. "What was your family like? I mean, I realize now that we barely know you still. Besides running around trying to stop the end of the world. All I remember is that you fell out of the sky and my brother claimed you to be his wife. Which, honestly, should have been the first sign of the apocalypse because none of us thought he'd even want to get hitched!"

Five smacked him and Karina laughed softly.

"My family? Never really had one. Dad died before I was born. Mom met another guy when I was three. Wasn't long before he showed his true colors and left us painfully colored quite often. No matter what we did, we couldn't ever find an escape from him and Mom was too terrified to even think about calling in help. Then the Handler kidnapped me when I was thirteen and well…we're circling back to what exactly is family?" she sighed.

"For all its worth and brokenness, you're part of ours," Five looked at her. "Sorry, not sorry."

"And hey, I'm glad you came along," Klaus piped up. "Both of you. You're…a good…brother. Oh, and sister-in-law, of course."

Five and Karina both smiled at him, rather touched and honored and appreciative.

"All right, all right. You say nice things about me now," Klaus said.

Five clicked his tongue and patted him on the shoulder. "Eh, let's go find your stupid mother." He took Karina's hand and led her off to the car.

"Love you too, tiny, lovestruck dancer!" Klaus scurried after them.

The three continued on their journey to find Klaus's mother. The road was evenly lined with tall trees. Cows were on one side as a bunch of Amish people went about their day. Klaus parked the car outside a farm and the three got out.

"Son of a bitch. Klaus is Amish!" Five was stunned.

"This explains everything," Klaus commented.

"How does this explain anything?" Karina frowned.

"Because look! Look at this place!" he exclaimed. "This is everything my childhood was missing." He started walking towards the farm.

"Hey, uh, Klaus?" Five rushed after him.

"Yeah?"

"Wait up a minute," he got to his side. "Doppelgänger check. You feel anything strange? Uh, itching, sweats, gas, anything like that?" he had a hold of Klaus's wrist.

"No. No, I feel great. Apart from the old rash on the tackle, but what can you do?"

Five and Karina watched him go.

"All right, good luck," Karina wished him.

Klaus turned to look at the couple. "What? Wait, you're not coming?"

"This one you gotta do alone," Five returned.

He sighed. "Alone? Yeah, okay." He sulked some as he walked off. "Yeah, I can do that, sure."

The two watched him leave and went back to the car. Five drove off to a nearby grassy pasture and parked there.

"Well, this is certainly an interesting road trip," Karina commented, seeing Five join her in the backseat.

"Yeah. Who the hell would have thought Klaus was Amish?" Five whipped out his map again.

"Still thinking about all those attractions?" she flipped open her book.

"I mean, for once Klaus is right. That's what retired married couples do."

"I suppose."

Five sort of sprawled out, letting her lay on him, so the back of her head was resting on his chest. He had an arm slung over her comfortably.

"What if Klaus does find his mother?" Karina spoke up thoughtfully. "Do you think there might be hope to find yours?"

Five sighed. "I don't know. I don't think there is, since those check stubs he came across probably don't exist in this timeline."

"That's unfortunate. You could have found your real mother."

He nodded quietly and then risked the question. "What about yours?"

"Mine?" she glanced up at him but her eyes were glossy. "I…you know what? I hate saying this but, this is a new timeline. I don't feel like she would be my mother in this world." She sighed. "I don't want to accept it, but, I don't want to give myself false hope."

"I'm sorry," he returned softly and guiltily. "I-I know you wanted to see her again and that this was supposed to give you the possibility of reuniting with her."

"It's not your fault. None of us knew Sir Reginald would mess with the timeline like this."

"Yeah," Five mumbled.

The two fell into a comfortable silence for a little bit. Karina ended up falling asleep on him as Five sung along to the radio.

"You don't even know my name. But every time you pass me by, girl, it makes me wanna cry," he was obliviously singing as a wave of energy passed through the air and caused the cows to moo. "It's a cryin' shame," he continued as the distressed mooing caused Karina to stir slightly. "I go inside the-" Five broke off when the energy wave jolted the car.

Karina inhaled sharply, shooting wide awake now. "Five? What was…that…?" she faltered when she saw the now empty field.

"What is.…?" Five strung out when he looked out as well.

The two slowly got out of the vehicle as Five looked around.

"Oh, can't we get one fսcking day off?" both of them complained in unison.

Five whipped out a marker and immediately set to work, scribbling equations all over the car.

"Isn't this technically vandalism?" Karina was helping him.

"The marker's erasable, love of mine. Makes things cleaner," he replied distractedly.

She just clicked her tongue and nodded slowly.

"Five! Karina! Five!" Klaus suddenly screamed in the distance as a huge clamoring crowd of Amish chased him down the hill. "Start the car, would ya?!" He looked back, panicking. "Oh my…shit, shit, shit! Five! Karina, get your husband's attention! Start the car!" He flailed his arms. "Five! Karina! Start the car!"

Karina looked back. "Oh for God's sake, how in the world did he manage to piss off the Amish? Five, my doll, we need to go!"

"Hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry!" Klaus fretted, finally closing in on them as Five turned around.

"Why can't you just get along with people, huh?!" he exclaimed as the three raced to get into the car.

"I tried. Really, I did. I tried!" Klaus reached the car door while Five and Karina jumped inside.

"Wait, wait, wait!" an Amish woman cried.

"Hold on a second!" Klaus raced over to her as the Amish crowd continued yelling and running towards them.

"Come on! Get in the car, Klaus!" Karina yelled.

"Klaus, it's now or never! Klaus!" Five added loudly.

Klaus sulked off with the bundle of papers the woman gave him. Five got the car started and drove off to safety.

Klaus flipped through the book. "This whole timeline's chock-full of riddles. Get this. My mom died here before I was even born!"

Five slammed on the brakes, making them screech as he and Karina stared at Klaus.

"What did you just say?!" they both exclaimed.

~ * ~

The three got back to the hotel and burst through the front doors, rushing inside. Allison was at the bar while Viktor and Diego were sitting at a booth.

"Okay, gather round, people," Five announced with a sigh. "Where is-" He looked around confusedly. "Where's every-Where's Luther?"

"Haven't seen him," Allison replied dryly.

"Who knows?" Diego added.

"Anybody know where-okay, you know what? We got bigger problems to worry about right now," Five announced.

"Like what?" Allison remarked.

"This," Five opened up the leather journal to reveal six women.

"Who are they?" Viktor questioned.

Five flipped through the pages. "These are our mothers." He got to a page and Klaus put his hand on it.

"That one's mine," he whispered.

"They're all dead," Five continued. "They all died on the exact same day, October 1st, 1989."

"That's our birthday," Viktor commented.

"Not anymore, it isn't. They all died before we were born."

"That's dumb," Diego jumped in. "If we weren't born, how can we exist?"

"Exactly," Five agreed.

Viktor looked at him. "What are you saying?"

"I'm saying, when we jumped here, we created a time paradox."

"Not just any paradox," Karina sighed.

"This is the grandfather paradox," Five said seriously.

"What the hell is a grandfather paradox?" Klaus questioned.

New Year's with the Magic Knights came with a big party. A big, loud party, hosted by the Golden Dawn in some random ballroom in some random fancy building. About half the Black Bulls and Golden Dawn were attending, and the others were back at their base, with family, or occupied with missions.

Liebe hung out in a corner, away from all the bright lights, loud music, and crowd of people. He watched Vanessa get drunk faster than anyone else and proceed to get Finral, Gauche, and Klaus drunk, too. His brother Asta was yelling at Yuno and Mimosa about something or other on the other side of the room, but for once his voice was drowned out by the rest of the party. Liebe almost missed it. He preferred being shouted at by one person to being surrounded by suffocating noise.

He couldn’t exactly leave. Most of the doors were blocked off by drunk Magic Knights, or worse, sober ones. And he doubted he’d get much peace anywhere else. It would be surprising if people in the furthest corner of the Forsaken Realm couldn't hear this racket. He was just stuck.

He had long ago discarded his squad robe, leaving it next to him in a heap of black fabric. He had always despised it, mostly because it felt like sandpaper. Metaphorically, at least. The fabric was actually quite soft, but the texture was god awful and felt like his hand was being stabbed a hundred times every time he touched it… and this was the revised version Vanessa had given him. The original had been even worse. (There was a reason he avoided hugging Asta like the plague. That boy never took his goddamn robe off.)

All in all, this whole party was insanely unpleasant, and Liebe found himself watching the huge clock on the wall anxiously, waiting for midnight to strike so he could go home with his knees tucked up beneath his chin and his arms wrapped around himself in a makeshift hug, trying to tune out the sounds of the party.

“Are you alright?” a low voice asked, momentarily breaking through his auditory block.

Liebe looked up to meet Yuno’s golden eyes. His heart leapt into his throat. His mouth was inexplicably dry all of a sudden, so his only response came in the form of a shrug.

“It’s pretty loud in here,” Yuno said. “You want to go outside?”

Liebe hesitated for a split second before remembering how awful his current environment was and nodding. Yuno silently offered his hand, helped Liebe up, and then led him out of one of the ballroom’s French windows onto a large balcony.

It was surprisingly empty. Although, it was also significantly colder out here than inside, which Liebe noticed the moment a cool breeze swept over them.

“Cold?” Yuno asked.

Liebe shrugged. “Sorta.”

Yuno took off his robe and held it out for Liebe to take. He went to do so but recoiled the minute his hand touched the fabric. Why did humans insist on wearing such awful textures?

“It has a different fabric as a lining,” Yuno said. “Might be a better texture.”

Liebe frowned, not entirely buying it, but still felt the inside of the robe. Surprisingly, the texture was better inside, so he hesitantly accepted the robe and slipped it on. It was really much nicer on his skin than his Black Bulls robe.

“What’s it made of?” he asked.

“Silk, I think, or maybe satin,” Yuno said. “The lining is, at least. Not sure about the outside.”

“Thanks.”

They fell into silence together, standing on the balcony and looking over the beautiful landscape.

“It’s hard to believe the year’s over already,” Yuno commented.

Liebe hummed in agreement.

"I remember, when Asta and I were kids, Father Orsi used to do fake firework shows with his magic," Yuno said softly. "It was nice.”

Liebe hummed again. It had been many years since he’d last spent New Year's Eve with someone. Since Licita's death, he'd spent so much time in the void of his grimoire that the days blurred into the nights and even if he’d wanted to he wouldn’t have known when to celebrate. Now, he was out of the grimoire again, but twelve years of nothing had left the memory hazy. And anyway, he didn’t particularly like any of the humans he had met since being allowed out.

Yuno was probably Liebe's favorite human. He was pretty, and he didn't yell constantly, and he didn't expect Liebe to pick up on a million tiny social cues or ostracize him for being a devil. Liebe liked being around Yuno - it sometimes felt like his only moment of peace. Vanessa and Finral called it love. Liebe wanted to disagree, but their idea of love did seem… accurate to his feelings.

“Asta also used to try and convince Sister Lily to marry him every year. It was like his equivalent to a New Year’s kiss.”

"I've never had a New Year's kiss before," Liebe said.

"Really?" Yuno asked. “Me neither.”

"Well, I've only had one New Year's point blank, back when I was a kid."

"Right." Yuno's voice was emotionless as usual, but Liebe could have sworn it carried an affectionate lilt. Or was he looking too far into it? Damn. Emotions were hard. “Asta mentioned that.”

“He talks about me?”

“Yes,” Yuno confirmed, and fell into silence. That was… all. Just a simple ‘yes’.

They fell back into silence. It was such a peaceful night, Liebe noted. There was no sign of the moon - Vanessa had noted it to be a new moon tonight, right in time for the new year. So many new things, all in one night.

Yuno shuffled a little closer to Liebe, their elbows almost touching, but not quite.

“I don’t understand the big thing about New Years,” Liebe confessed. “We all survived another year. Hooray. Everyone throws a big party. But why? A year isn’t that long.”

“Depends on the year,” Yuno replied. “I mean, there was a whole war against devils this year. That’s pretty impressive to have survived.”

“Hm, that’s true.”

“You do have a point, though.” Yuno said. “We don’t have wars or some kind of national crisis every year.”

“You don’t,” Liebe agreed.

“I suppose it’s just fun to shove another excuse to have a party and shoot off some fireworks into the year.” Yuno mused.

“I hate parties.”

“Too loud, right?”

“Yep.”

“I agree.”

Suddenly, a loud chorus erupted from behind them, the partygoers inside counting down from ten. Midnight was approaching.

“Liebe,” Yuno said suddenly as the count commenced.

Liebe looked back at him.

Three.

Yuno looked… nervous.

Two.

Suddenly, his hands were on Liebe’s cheeks, pulling him closer.

One.

Fireworks and cheers started exploding behind them, the new year officially started, but Liebe was preoccupied with Yuno’s lips on his.

He didn’t exactly know how to react.

It would be wrong to say he didn’t like the kiss. It was a good kiss. Not that he really had any experience, but it felt nice to kiss Yuno.

A few moments after the cheering died down, Yuno pulled away again.

“Sorry,” he said, averting his gaze. “I’ve been wanting an excuse to kiss you for a while.”

Liebe went red, his face burning. “You’ve what?”

“I’ve wanted to kiss you for a while.” Yuno repeated.

“Why?”

Yuno’s mouth tugged into a small smile. “I’m not sure,” he said. “You are strange.”

Liebe frowned. “I am.”

“Yeah,” Yuno agreed. “But.. in a good way. I like strange. I’d like to get to know your kind of strange better.”

“Isn’t that how you ask someone out on a date?” Liebe asked.

“That was my intention,” Yuno confirmed.

“Oh,” Liebe thought for a moment. He had obviously never dated anyone before, but Yuno was a pretty solid place to start. He had been subject to observing his squadmate’s relationships and, honestly, Yuno would absolutely be his first choice. “Yeah. Alright!”

“Nice,” Yuno said, smiling a little more. His smile was really pretty, Liebe noticed.

Liebe smiled back, a little awkwardly. “Should we go back inside?” he asked.

“The party won’t be over for a while yet,” Yuno said. “We can stay out here, if you want.”

“I would prefer that.” Liebe said.

“So would I.” Yuno replied, taking Liebe’s hand and intertwining their fingers.
