I don't know, there's just something that hits so hard knowing that at his very core, Wanderer is just a sweet boy who wants to help others and find a family who will love and take care of him in return. We can see this when he's first found after Ei left him, and also when he erases himself from Irminsul.

Wanderer, when we meet him as Scaramouche is someone tainted by centuries of deceit. He's the product of a twisted mind twisting the naive mind of a puppet just looking for his place in this world. His personality as Scaramouche is fragments of those he's spent the most time with (the harbingers), coupled with his three perceived betrayals, and we end up with a homicidal puppet who hates humanity and detests the gods. He may have hated them, but the Harbingers (especially Dottore) are the ones who shaped the Balladeer we met.

But the Wanderer we meet post-Irminsul is helping out at a fruit stand in Sumeru fully expecting no compensation for his work. He goes out of his way to pick fresh sunsettias and take care of this stand all because the man who runs it helped him. He's shocked and confused, not angry, when the Traveler says that he's a puppet despite him making it a point to never tell anyone. He happily accompanies the Traveler and Paimon to Nahida, even apologizing for the inconvenience.

Dottore made sure all of Wanderer's naive traits turned bitter towards the world because he wanted a fascinating test subject. And yet, even when he could go on the warpath and murder Dottore after finding out the core betrayal that shaped him was a lie, he instead chooses to erase himself from the past just as a small chance to fix the wrongs he's done and give those hurt because of him a chance at a better life.

If the Kabukimono and Wanderer were him without being molded by the harsh world and Scaramouche was the result of being manipulated, I really wonder how he would have turned out had Ei not chosen to give him up.

In other words: Scaramouche is baby and he deserved so much better. Wanderer is a sweetheart who had to reconcile with a past that went completely against who he thought he was and deserved better. But the Wanderer we have now, is healing.

He's healing and I can't explain how proud of him I am that he's trying.

He quietly mutters the taunt she told him, “‘Spoiled brat in a circus suit’—?” Alfred asks, “Was that a yes or a no?” The pouting child brusquely tells him, ”no,” which causes the butler to clear his throat. Dick begrudgingly corrects himself, “No thank you, Alfred.” Alfred responds, “As you wish, Master Dick.”

But Dick is already uttering another taunt under his breath, “‘Lap of luxury’!” Bruce leans forward slightly and asks if everything is okay but Dick dismisses his concern. He excuses, “I'm... I'm not very hungry, Bruce. Is it okay if I go to my room?” Despite his obvious qualms, Bruce awkwardly smiles and replies, “Uh... Of course. Certainly.” Dick gets up as Alfred tells him the food will be in the refrigerator if he gets hungry later but Dick just ‘uh-huh’s him as he walks away. With the child upstairs, Bruce immediately stands up and paces. He stops in front of the fireplace and stares into the blaze as he monologues his worries, “Maybe this was a mistake. What in the world made me think I could raise a boy? I don't know the first thing about it! I've always been a loner! I don't have the knowledge... or the disposition... to make this work.” Alfred wryly asks, “Are you addressing the fireplace, Sir—or me?” But Bruce stresses his demur without looking at him, “His parents are dead, Alfred! What gives me the temerity to believe I can replace them in his life?”

Alfred solemnly reassures, “I asked myself the same questions once. What in the world did a butler know about raising a young man who'd just lost the two people he loved most in the world? But strangely enough, Sir—I adapted. I learned. I learned because I wanted to... Because I cared. And... despite some difficulties along the way—I think the young man in question turned out splendidly. And I think Master Dick will too.” Bruce doesn't say anything but he his eyes closed in thought as Alfred talks before looking at him with a soft smile. He straightens his posture when Alfred finishes and puts his hand on his shoulder, silently grateful for the man's fatherly reassurance and support once again. END ID]

i'm currently rereading catastrophe and sending things i notice back and forth with my friend. very fun. but yesterday i came across this page, which is right after guren and mahiru sleep together. and it was like...

longing, huh. i do have a history with that word. so i jokingly messaged my friend going "haha, what if they used akogare here".

it was a joke. i was joking. i thought there was no way the original would say akogare. but guess what? they did. they did use akogare.

like the absolute champion he is my friend found the exact scene in the japanese version, and it's "紅蓮は肌で憧れを感じた".

the fucking 憧れ is back to terrorise me.

because up to this point i wasn't sure if they actually used the same word for mahiru's feelings towards guren as they did for shinya's in chapter 83. up to this point i could still convince myself that they really just meant admiration and my child wasn't actually caught up in some sad ass unrequited love. because it fits! shinya does admire guren! but you can't even say that they might mean longing for mahiru and admiration for shinya because mahiru literally used 憧れ for both her and shinya in the same damn sentence. and i don't think admiration fits mahiru's feelings. at all.

... which would also mean that both guren and mahiru actually are aware of shinya's feelings. which i'll be honest i personally did not think was the case. i thought they meant admiration. or that it was up to interpretation. i did.
