Mysterious Flash Over Kyiv, Ukraine

A mysterious flash which lit up skies over Ukraine's capital on Wednesday night generated much speculation.

Officials in Kyiv initially suspected it was a Nasa satellite falling to Earth but the US space agency said it was still in orbit.

Ukrainian space officials said later the flash had probably come from a meteor entering the atmosphere.

The air force was confident it was not a Russian air attack - an event all too familiar since the invasion last year.

The bright glow was observed in the sky over the capital around 22:00 local time (19:00 GMT).

An air raid alert was activated but "air defence was not in operation", the head of Kyiv's military administration, Serhiy Popko.

So apparently on December 11th NASA tested using lasers to send information from space to Earth and this was the video they used:

The first video to be sent from space to Earth via laser is of an orange tabby cat chasing a laser pointer. His name? Taters.

Peak hosting exists on the spacecraft heat shield. The white glow is produced by ionised gases. The groanish tinge to the white glow is probably the contribution of the ablative products (of the heat shield) as they are known to have strong spectral lines in the green region. The bright streaks are probably hot fragments from the dre and tubing fairings located near the heat shield. The altitude is 173,000 feet. The Mach number is 19.0. The inertial velocity is 22,150 feet per second"
