Infinity Symbol Art for Autism Acceptance Month
I made a couple of mobius Infinity Symbols on transparent backgrounds, one using the Neurodiversity rainbow colors and one in gold for Autism Acceptance Month (inspired by this tumblr post).  CC0 Public Domain -- want, take, have.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I modeled, textured, and rendered these in blender (free, open-source 3D program), if you want the .blend file (also CC0 Public Domain) it's in this post at the Blender Artists Forum.
Crossposted to Dreamwidth and Pillowfort.

“alt text for more info” “turn on cations for more info” no actually this is not where more info goes. These have a very distinct purpose. There are plenty of other places for more info. If you’re going to make your post inaccessible, the least you could do is not use accessibility tools at your own leisure for whatever purpose you see fit.

Write more characters with physical disabilities. Write more characters with mental disabilities. Write characters with neurodivergence (more than one specific type too). Write characters with mobility aids. Write characters who have good and bad health days. Write characters who are chronically in pain, but don't express it every second. Write characters who were born with a disability. Write characters who developed one. Write characters who have adapted to the world around them because the world won't adapt for them. Write about their strengths and weaknesses due to their disability. Write about accessibility. Write about inaccessibility. Make it realistic.
Don't make the disability magically disappear or be cured (or at least be mindful of how you write that). Don't make it their entire personality but also don't skip over it. Don't use stereotypes (and that's not just with disabilities). Don't make the character actively hate their disability; they're allowed to be upset but most people with disabilities have learned to accept it as part of their life and accept it as part of their identity.

It’s okay to stim in public. It’s not your fault if you need accommodations in public spaces. Your mobility aid is not inconvenience. Your disability is not an inconvenience. It’s okay if you need help reading a menu or if you need different menu that’s easier to read. It’s not your fault if your mobility aid interfered with someone else’s day (getting your chair stuck in an entrance), the world was not made with our needs in mind. It’s not your fault if you didn’t understand something socially and messed up. It’s okay if you need to wear ear defenders and sunglasses inside, you’re not rude, the lights and sound are just hard. You are not a bad person and you’re not a burden.

Something I do not see discussed a lot about Laios in Dungeon Meshi is how his fascination with monsters exactly ties into his autism. Like, yeah, sure monsters are kind of his hyperfixation, but it is more than that.
It is actually a very common phenomenon that autistic kids do feel like they are not human. Simply because they often get treated so much as "other" for not getting those invisible human rules that everyone else instinctively understands. Like, I do not know a single autistic person, who not at some point during their childhood reasoned that they must've been or should've been something non-human.
I personally (growing up in a very oppressive religious household) thought I must be a demon of sorts. Another autistic friend ended up reasining, they must be a changeling child. A japanese autistic friend spend most of her childhood and youth convinced that she is a kitsune that somehow got stuck in human form and now did not know how to turn back.
And when I see Laios fantasizing about being a monster, when I see his deepest desire being to get that monster form he knows he should have... Yeah, that is what I see there.

The way people talk over Black Autistic people is... Mind-Boggling. Truly.
There are so many people in the autistic community that genuinely believe that them and Black Autistic people have the same experience, and that everything Black Autistic people go through they go through as well.
That's NOT TRUE.
Black Autistics face more questioning and doubt than White Autistics do.
Yes, all Autistics face doubt.
But when White Autistics face doubt they're often told 'You aren't autistic' - as in YOU in specific are not Autistic.
Meanwhile when Black Autistics face doubt we're often told 'You CAN'T be autistic'. Not just 'You aren't', but you can't.
As in 'You physically, biologically CANNOT be autistic because you are black'.
Do you see the difference?
I've had multiple people say to me 'I didn't know you can be black and autistic', or 'I didn't know black autistic people existed.'
Our mere existence as an entire GROUP is called into question. Because of our race.
No one will ever say 'I didn't know you can be white and autistic' because Autistic Representation revolves around Whiteness.
-
And yes, 99% of people with autism had communication issues.
But if you're a white autistic person you have never had to decode micoagressive racism through the lens of your autism.
- Especially at risk of your safety or life.
Allistic black people already have to carefully choose our behavior and wording with law enforcement under threat of imprisonment or outright on-the-spot execution.
Now imagine having to navigate conversations with law enforcement while also autistic.
Especially knowing that most of the time when a mentally disabled person is killed by law enforcement - they are usually also black.
Elijah McClain and Ryan Gainer - both autistic AND BLACK. Osaze Osagie - also black.
So even if you say that all autistic people experience this, it's very clear that Black Autistic people face it to a higher, more dangerous degree.
We are not 1:1. We are not the same.
This doesn't even factor in things like having to learn to codeswitch or speak AAVE. Or how predominately black schools have less resources for their autistic students.
Or how many professionals in mental health DON'T diagnose black people because they've never studied the Black Autistic experience, and thus cannot spot it.
Or how many Black people that ARE identified to be neurodivergent are instead labeled with ODD or BPD instead.
There are so many layers and factors to this that cannot be ignored.
The autism community needs to get better at understanding intersectionality. We need to get better at representing Autistics of color for ALL levels.
And y'all need to stop talking over Black Autistics. Our experiences are not the same. And that's okay.

I recently did some illustrations for a charming new book by Sally J Pla, Ada and Zaz, that's coming out in September :)
It's about an autistic kid and a kid with ADHD becoming friends, even though they're very different~ Here's some of my fave illustrations from the book!

Ranting about Nucani
There is something I want to express and this fandom should know.
Nu: Carnival is a Harem game but unlike most games in the genre the relationships with MC are all canon within the same story, there are no "Routes", no "Alternate Universe/Timelines", it's all 1 Main Story where you get to gradually meet all the Characters who'll be your companions, in this game named Clan members, and all of them one way or another end up falling for Eiden (MC), which makes polyam relationship canon with Eiden as the center:
Tumblr media
Like very few games have polyam representation, let alone a positive one, like yes the polycule it's very Eiden central but even then all the Clan Members interact with one another, as we see mainly in the time limited Events but also in the Main Story, and have friendly and amicable interactions, they rely on one another sometimes even without Eiden being involved.
But also, Aster and Morvay have a relationship established too since way before the events of the prologue of the game, Kuya and Quincy have hinted some sort of situationship (idk I don't care about Quincy and my knowledge about Kuya is limited to what happens in the story and events cause I have no limited SSRs nor have I read any of his Intimacy Rooms).
[Also if any of you knows of any other relationship that have been hinted at that i'm missing feel free to share, i specifically ask of you to refer to only canon, i know in fanon anything and everything is possible and sometimes we may be missperceiving some interactions between characters so i ask of you to take those rose tinted glasses off and see unfiltered canon, it's hard for me too ngl so dw]
All this started with some posts I saw about ppl feeling bad for Yakumo and/or Edmond to be "forced into a polyam relationship" when they are the "most romantic members" and "deserve a monogamous relationship", their words not mine, as if mono > poly , but also do you really think they're against it!?
One thing is being Clan Members against their will (which is all Huey's fault btw), having to work together to regulate the Altars' Essence (or their own) and then another one completely is involving themselves in a personal and intimate way with Eiden, which the latter they all did in their own terms and out of free will.
Also i wanna share one of the best and my fav scenes with Karu, which i know not everyone was able to experience it cause it's hidden in the Intimacy Rooms of a Limited SSR, but it expresses exactly why the polycule is consensual.
Context: Eiden has been worrying about forcing the Clan Members to be with him because he is the New Grand Sorcerer, against their will just because of Huey's magic that ties them together and the responsibility of Regulating the Altars and basically maintaining stability in the Klein Continent.
His worries began (at least that i noticed) in "Eerie Escapade" (Halloween Event), that was also the first time Garu got hurt while protecting Eiden and the first time Karu got mad at him and fronted to yell at Eiden (which is my another fav scene of Karu omg i love him so much i gotta go back and take screenshots of that but that's for another post), the second one being in "Army x Blood x Oath" (which are the screenshots i'll show u)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because this are the Intimacy Rooms of Garu/Karu's Limited SSR this scene focuses on Eiden feeling guilty because Garu got hurt in the past (Halloween Event) and this time he lost his memory (temporarily, due to this event's story) and Eiden blaming himself for it all and wondering if they would be better off without him, but the same can and is applied to the rest of the Clan Members, seeing how Eiden met and approached Rei while respecting his privacy and independency even tho he's also a Clan Member and the newest introduced in the story, means that the Limited Events are also canon and part of the story because Eiden seems to be growing and learning from previous Events and showing that development in future Events and the Main Story.
Karu also mentions that Garu (prior to losing his memories) was also worrying about the same thing Eiden was, like 'what if Master (Eiden) stays with us just because of the contract with Huey? :c' and he calls them both idiots because they don't communicate and fronts to fix it! (Mighty Karu to the rescue)
And talking about "Eerie Escapade" that is also the event where Yakumo's possessiveness towards Eiden shows, i'll admit i haven't seen the last room but i feel like those people i mentioned before are using it as fuel to their idea, because if Yakumo is jealous of other Clan Members interacting with Eiden and "Wants him all to himself" that must mean he wants a monogamous relationship, right?
WRONG!
That just means Yakumo is a complex person that feels different emotions specially when it comes to the most important person in his life (Eiden) other than his grandparents!
And Yakumo feels guilty for having those feelings, not because of them being in a polycule and he not wanting to be in it, but because he has trauma and sees his desires and wants as selfishness and he would never allow himself to be selfish cause he doesn't want to hurt people, he's a people's pleaser! He lives with constant fear of hurting others like the Great Serpent did when it killed many (but apparently there may be more that meets the eye, because the current event hinted that the Great Serpent actually liked humans and took care of children ???)
And Yakumo dealing with those feelings along with his yokai powers as a descendant of The Great Serpent have been the main topic of his last 3 Limited SSRs, which is great because that means CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT~
Now unfortunately i cannot talk about Edmond's Intimacy Rooms as i'm missing ALL OF HIS SSRs (why do you hate me Edmond if ily) but from what i've seen he's also pretty happy being with Eiden, heck even HIS MOM is happy his son is with Eiden!
That's right, she's the first and only parent of the Clan Members that knows and approves of their relationship, if it weren't because most of them are orphan we could get many more... i wonder if Yakumo's grandparents are aware hmmm ... and we all know Olivine's parents are gonna HATE it xD and maybe Garu's wolf pack will approve of Eiden by the end of this event.

Also can we agree that actually the whole 'savant syndrome' thing is kinda fucked? Like yes, it's a real thing, but its linked with autism so much to the point where not being a genius makes people feel like they're 'not autistic enough'? I've already seemingly failed at being a normal person, the last thing I need is to fail at being autistic too.

Auctober Month: Day 8 (Diverse)
*I skipped Day 7 (Hyperfocus) because I’m not sure when I hyperfocused on something to be honest. I remember using my special interests in my art projects in college (e.g. making a TV guide for a self-promotion project), but I don’t know if that counts*
One thing that I love about cartoons is that they are stepping up in representation and diversity, especially in the autistic community. Here are a few of my favorite canonically autistic characters.
From left to right: Norma Khan (Dead End: Paranormal Park), Carl Gould (Arthur), Max (Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood)

Having late-diagnosed adhd is weird.
(CW internalized ableism)
Realizing that what I always thought was a “normal” source for motivation was really just shame, guilt, fear, self-judgment and a whole lot of “shoulding” (apart from the rare hyperfocus where the motivation was actually my own)
What I thought was “self-discipline” was just constant self-berating and guilt for being so “bad” at it when other people seemed to pick it up so easily
I always felt so ashamed whenever someone credited their success to their parents raising them to have a great work ethic. How come *I* didn’t turn out the same way, when my dad spent most of his waking moments working to provide for us? How did that not teach me a great work ethic?
Even if no one said it to my face, I internalized deeply the notion preached in every corner of society that people who aren’t self-disciplined are lazy and don’t actually care
I never thought I had adhd because I didn’t fit the stereotypical symptom profile. And I believed so deeply that I just had to “work harder” even though I was mentally deteriorating from how hard I actually was working. But that’s normal for everyone, right?
And now that I’ve deconstructed a lot of this shame and guilt (after years and years of therapy that I’ve been lucky to have), I see it as it is and have stopped using these toxic things to motivate me. And I’m realizing just how little “natural” motivation I actually have. Any motivation I do get is sporadic, for super random things, never consistent and not usually for “productive” tasks.
I’ve finally come to the place where I don’t feel even slightly opposed to trying out adhd medication either. But it has come at the *very* opportune time when I’m unemployed, searching for a job (with the aforementioned lack of motivation in a shit job market), and uninsured.

Gentle reminder that your disability and/or chronic illness struggles are valid, even if others have it worse. It’s not like there’s one definitive Most Disabled Person In The World and they’re the only one entitled to accommodations or reactive emotions. That’s not how it works <3

It's That Time of Year Again...
Drarry Disability Fest 2024
Welcome Back to the 2ND YEAR of Drarry Disability Fest (2024)!
For those who don't know, Drarry Disability Fest is a fest dedicated to the accurate representation of disabilities, d/Deafness, medical conditions, and mental illness; Drarry Disability Fest is the first of it's kind. In this fest there will be no romanticism of disability (though romance will definitely be present elsewhere), instead we want our artists and writers to focus on accurate depiction - whether it be of the sad, mad, or glad times of disability and mental illness.
Our goal is to add diversity to the Drarry fic and fanart community, and we firmly believe that while disability and mental illness can be very difficult to handle, they do not mean that we're destined to a life of inaction and solitude; we are an empowered community.
All the mods for this fest are disabled/mentally ill to some extent, and have experience with a variety of additional disabilities to ensure that we have maximum ability to give feedback and filter prompts to the best of our ability.
We would also like to say that everyone's experience with mental illness and disability is different, so if you end up reading a depiction of your illness or disability that differs from your own, please accept that we do our best to filter the media in this fest so that it is safe for disabled readers, and remember that every different experience with a condition is valid.
This fest will not be anonymous, and we're posting to the fest AO3 Collection in July as that is Disability Pride Month. This year we are starting everything slightly earlier so that all you beautiful creators have more time to create, so follow our tumblr and join our discord sever to be sure you don't miss anything.
Anyone may prompt to this fest, even if you don't plan to create anything, however we will be filtering your prompt submissions on the AirTable to ensure they are sensitive to the disability/mental illness you are wishing to see depicted.
You don't need to be disabled to write about disabilities, but please do your research, ask questions from disabled sensitivity readers, and if you're ever unsure our wonderful mods Ceylon, Rowan, and Kel are happy to help. We have a wordcount minimum of ~1000 or equivalent. This means if you're not doing a written piece then put in the effort equivalent in your digital fanart, podfic, or other media. We do not accept videos at this time.
Beta readers/viewers are required for each submission. You can self prompt when claiming, and you can claim multiple prompts as long as you submit each work before claiming a new prompt.
The Dates are as follows in MST/MDT:
February 29 (Leap Year): Prompting Begins
March 20: Prompting Closes (Self-Prompting still allowed)
April 1: Claiming Opens
June 15: Claiming Closes
June 16 : Submissions Deadline
July 1: Posting Begins
July 31: Posting Ends & Fest Wrap-up
Further in depth fest rules can be found at the pinned post on our tumblr, please give them a read as they have been updated!
Your mods: Rowan @basicallyahedgehog (tumblr), Ceylon @quackquackcey (tumblr), Kel @slytherinthelibrary (tumblr)
A PSA: We acknowledge that J.K. Rowling is the author of the series this fandom is based in, however all mods involved strongly disagree with and refute any and all racist, antisemitic, transphobic, homophobic, and other prejudiced ideas the author holds. This is a safe space for trans people and two of our mods are trans themselves. If you are transphobic or homophobic or otherwise prejudiced against any marginalized group; you are not welcome here.

(TW FOR ABLEISM AND EXPLOITATION)
AAC is not a well known disability aid. Due to this, I struggle a lot with feeling embarrassed in public, out of fear people will assume I am an "I-Pad kid". In fact, people HAVE assumed this. Something that I think would help decrease things like this is people seeing AAC users online and on TV. Unfortunately, AAC users online typically are children being filmed by their parents in an exploitive way. I want AAC users to make more content ourselves. By AAC users having a bigger online presence, we can increase the number of people aware, properly educated on us, and accepting of us. This can help to raise awareness about our experiences and challenges and promote greater understanding and empathy.
I hope more AAC users make content, and less parents nonconsensually post their children.
