How about
- "Who is the closest to the child" for Nie parents? - "Who sleeps in the middle" for 3zun?
Thank you so much for allowing me to indulge in some headcanons :D
For the Nie parents - for context, I tend to name them Nie Shizheng (aka sect leader Nie), He Yaling (aka Madame Nie), and Nie Ziniao (former opera performer/current concubine who came from a sad background and voluntarily took the Nie name when she was brought to the Unclean Realm): The answer is Nie Ziniao - Nie Shizheng and He Yaling both have sect duties on top of being parents, but Nie Ziniao has nobody but the boys to dedicate herself to, so it's only natural that they're closer.
For 3zun: It'd definitely not JGY - he always needs to sleep on the outside edge of the bed, it's a safety thing. So NMJ tends to wind up in the middle most often (there was a time he and LXC switched places, but the heaviest of them being on one side of the bed for a significant period of time messed with the mattress - plus NMJ's tits are the best pillows ever and LXC and JGY like to fall asleep on them).

Nie Huaisang: Do you ever have dreams that make you feel weird?
Nie Mingjue: Please don't tell me I have to give you the talk.
Nie Huaisang: What talk? My dream was about frogs that could talk and they were trying to manipulate me into murdering people.
Nie Huaisang: Is that something I need to worry about?

The Hate and Love of family
by Moonlit_dewdrops
T, WIP, 20k, Wangxian & Sangcheng
Summary: Wei Wuxian gets sent home after the fight with Jin Zixuan. Jiang Cheng is right to have worried. Kay's comments: Sometimes. You just read Wei Wuxian getting put through a meat grinder named Yu Ziyuan, because he's your beloved blorbo. In this story, he gets punished by Madam Yu after he punched Jin Zixuan, luckily the Jiang siblings are there for him and get him to safety. Featuring some minor Sangcheng, the Nie brothers being awesome, the Cloud Recesses being a safe haven for Wei Wuxian and the most tender hurt/comfort post-study arc Wangxian interactions. Excerpt: Jiang Cheng knows he has to leave for Cloud Recesses. He has no idea when his mother will be returning but he knows he has to get himself and his brother out before then. Wei Wuxian’s condition hasn’t gotten better though it has not gotten significantly worse either. He had yet to regain consciousness. During the past few nights, Wei Wuxian tosses and turns restlessly from nightmares on top of the fever, crying out names in his sleep. Most of the time, it’s their sister’s, sometimes it’s Jiang Cheng’s, and other times even Lan Wangji’s name. During the day, he continues to plan how to get to Cloud Recesses, despite his exhaustion from the restless nights he had looking after his brother. Jiang Cheng, being fearful of something terrible happening hadn’t returned to his own bedroom to sleep. In fact, he had barely been sleeping at all, jerking awake every time he no longer heard his brother’s breathing. He only manages to get some rest after Jiang Xing and his assistants assured him that they will wake him up if anything happened.
pov alternating, canon divergence, cloud recesses study arc, wei wuxian whump, hurt wei wuxian, major character injury, good sibling jiang cheng, good sibling jiang yanli, jiang cheng/nie huaisang, sangcheng, good uncle lan qiren, bad parent yu ziyuan, protective lan wangji, soft lan wangji/wei wuxian, developing relationship, hurt/comfort, recovery

hi! I'm a big fan of your translations, thanks for sharing! I was wondering if you've ever done your own translations/interpretations of the names of the characters in mdzs?
hi!! ahh thank you! yes, I do have a (wip) post with my translations of character titles (eg cssr) and proper nouns in mdzs here! and I actually have been meaning to post an analysis of the mdzs surnames for a long time, so I'll use this ask to do so! thank you for reminding me!!
note: the characters are in traditional chinese :)
魏 Wei
this one is pretty self-explanatory for anyone who can read chinese. on the right is a 鬼 gui radical, which means ghost! for our lil 鬼道之王 king of the ghost path <3
(this radical also appears in a lot of words for "soul," such as 魂魄)
藍 Lan
I've often seen people simply say 藍 lan means "blue," and that wouldn't be wrong but it also wouldn't be completely correct. similar to how wwx clarifies that the 義 yi of 義城 yi city is not that of 俠義 heroic justice, but that of 義莊 coffin home, the in-universe definition from chapter 18 is that the lan surname is derived from 伽藍 qielan, which is a loan word from sanskrit, “saṃgharāma,” meaning buddhist monastery.
溫 Wen
溫 wen means temperature, warm. the wens do love their sun. pretty straightforward!
金 Jin
also straightforward. the jins are rich and opulent, and 金 jin means gold!
聶 Nie
here's where things get interesting. this is the one that made me think more about the surnames, and the reason why they're written in traditional here. I had always read nhs's name in simplified (聂) but when I saw it in traditional (聶), it clicked.
not only does 聶 nie mean "to whisper," but nhs has three 耳 ears in his name!!
AND INDEED, NHS HAS EARS EVERYWHERE, AND HE IS ALWAYS LISTENING. 👂👂👂
江 Jiang
this one I had to think about for a bit. of course, there's the most direct answer, which is that 江 jiang means river—and the jiang's are, of course, well known for their lotus pier and rivers and such. but a more interesting thought that occurred to me was that 江 may be a reference to 江湖 jianghu, aka rogue martial artist communities who aren't affiliated with mainstream society often seen in wuxia fantasy novels. those part of the jianghu do not adhere to government/law, but rather live under individual moral codes of conduct re righteousness, justice, vengeance, etc. quoting jeannette ng's essay on wuxia:
In Stateless Subjects: Chinese Martial Arts History and Postcolonial History, Petrus Liu translates jianghu as “stateless”, which further emphasizes that the hero’s rejection of and by the machineries of government. Jianghu is thus a world that rejects the dictates of the state in favor of divine virtue and reason, but also of a sense of self created through clan and community.
the jiang family precepts and ideals seem v aligned with this aspect of jianghu morality—after all, jc never lets us (or himself) forget that wwx's acts of vigilante heroism are those of an ideal jiang.
Bonus: 莫 Mo
mo xuanyu was only ever a blank canvas. 莫 mo means nothing, no one, none. </3

Love how major Jiang Cheng ships are just highly oedipal or highly electra. Like he was crushing on Wen Qing who’s as severe and direct as Yu Ziyuan and then there’s his biggest ship with Lan Xichen who’s as pleasant and polite as Jiang Fengmian. A good chunk of us can agree that Jiang Cheng has some kinda mommy/daddy issues at all times.

oh another headcanon that I swear by is that NMJ looks a lot like his mom while NHS is basically a carbon copy of his dad, just a foot shorter. the Aesthetic and the Cunning all came from his mom though

Your sister told me the most interesting story about Sect Leader Yao just now… Is it truth? You know very well A-Sang has a way of twisting words for her own entertainment. It will be shortly~

Lan Wangji was nervous. He shouldn't be, but he was.
After spending summer in Japan with his brother, his brother's best friend and said friend's younger brother, who's also his classmate (also known as Nie Huaisang), today was his first date with his year long boyfriend Wei Ying since he was back (two days ago).
They decided to go out for boba and a walk on the park before going to the Lans townhouse so Wei Ying could get his presents and souvenirs. Lan Qiren already asked for a spicy plate for the boy to eat at dinner, even if the teenagers haven't said anything about it. His uncle just know them well enough.
Anyway, Lan Wangji wasn't nervous because of the date itself, he knows how to make Wei Ying happy and a happy Wei Ying makes him the happiest. No, he was nervous about the giant bunny plush he won on gacha a few weeks ago.
(he spent over an hour and countless coins on it. Nie Huaisang was highly amused watching and filming him getting a meltdown every time it fell)
As usual, their date was excellent and Wei Ying smiled the whole time, not letting go of his hand or arm. He pouted and whined a lot, about missing him, about his jealousy (even though he traveled with his parents to the beach somewhere in Thailand, away from humid and hot gigantic city), and Lan Wangji make sure to hug and kiss him a lot to make up for it.
Then they went back to Lan Wangji's house and he started feeling his heart beating faster.
Because of house rules, they couldn't go to Lan Wangji's room by themselves, so Wei Ying sat on the living room floor to play with his boyfriend's pet bunnies and waited for him to come back with his presents.
"Wei Ying." Lan Wangji called.
"Lan Zhan!"
The boy looked up with a bright smile and Lan Wangji could feel the love arrow pierce his heart once again. He had to pause for a moment before kneeling down.
"For you."
"Yay!" Wei Ying cheered, taking the paper bag "Should I open now or wait until I get home?"
"Here." Lan Wangji nodded, glad his boyfriend didn't realized he hid the big plushie beside the couch.
Wei Ying got excited with each item, even the ones for his parents and little sister. Although he did started complaining it was too much halfway through. Wei Ying got especially happy when he found the photo strips from the booth Nie Huaisang made him go in Harajuku.
"Thank you so much, Lan Zhan." he said when finished, putting everything inside the bag again.
"...There's one more." Lan Wangji confessed, accepting his hug.
"One more?" Wei Ying looked at him curiously "Why it wasn't with the others?"
"Ah..."
Lan Wangji pushed him softly and stretched backwards to get the plushie.
"I won a bunny plush for you." he said, feeling his ears warming up.
"A bunny plush?!" Wei Ying's eyes widened, visibly excited "I love plushies!"
"I know." Lan Wangji huffed amusedly.
Then, he presented his acquisition.
But instead of squealing with mirth, Wei Ying bit down his lip.
"A bunny plush, Lan Zhan?"
"Yes..."
Wei Ying laughed loudly, falling down to the ground with tears in his eyes and Lan Wangji looked down at the plushie in his hands. It was a big headed bunny with big floppy ears, blue eyes and wearing a cute aviation uniform.
What's wrong with it? Lan Wangji thought it was cute. Very, very cute. He even thought about getting one for himself, but the stress to get one was already too much for him.
"Lan Zhan!" Wei Ying exclaimed, trying to stop laughing "That's not a bunny! It's cinnamon roll!"
"...Cinnamon roll?"
"You don't know?" Wei Ying stopped laughing to stare at him "He's a Sanrio character, you know. Hello Kitty...?"
"I know Hello Kitty." he paused "Is this not a bunny?"
"Noooo! It's a dog!" Wei Ying laughed again, taking his phone and typing something fast "Look."
A search with the character name was made and it shown: Cinnamoroll, is a white puppy with chubby cheeks and long ears, blue eyes, pink cheeks, and a tail that resembles a cinnamon roll.
"A puppy." he looked at the plushie again in confusion. How is this a puppy?!
"Yeah." Wei Ying chuckled "And it's mine! Don't even think about taking it back just because it's not a bunny!" he mock threatened.
Silently, still confused, he gave the Cinnamonroll to his boyfriend, watching him cuddling the not bunny tightly.
Well. At least Wei Ying is happy.
He can't wait for lunch tomorrow with Wei Ying's parents.

WIP Wednesday 08/30
I think it's been a while since I put up one of these, so here's a taste of something I'm working on - SangCheng, modern day AU set in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, to hopefully be finished before the end of the year *crosses fingers*
~~~
“There’s my favourite young engineer!” Jiang Fengmian crowed over the noisy crowd.
Wei Wuxian entered the hall – late, of course – with his new boyfriend on his arm, and Jiang Cheng’s father greeted him with a smile and a paternal pat on the shoulder.
Jiang Cheng couldn’t remember the last time his father had greeted him in such a manner.
“We told you he’d be here,” Wei Changze scolded, bringing Wei Wuxian a glass of wine. “I love my son, but punctual he is not.”
“And someone is looking particularly handsome tonight,” Cangse Sanren cooed as she approached Lan Zhan. “Did A-Xian pick out that jacket?”
“Mn,” Lan Zhan nodded.
“A-Niang, be nice,” Wei Wuxian playfully scolded despite the wide grin on his face. His parents loved his boyfriend and were nothing but supportive of him, had been even before he’d come out years ago.
Jiang Cheng was not jealous. Not at all. Not one bit.
There was a huff at Jiang Cheng’s side and he glanced at his mother from the corner of his eye. If looks could kill, Jiang Fengmian and Cangse Sanren would be long dead. He felt his phone buzz, but decided this wasn’t the moment to risk taking it out to see what Nie Huaisang had texted him.
“Jiang Cheng!” Wei Wuxian waved at him, and at the risk of angering his mother, Jiang Cheng left her side to approach his best friend. “You remember Lan Zhan from New Year’s Eve?”
“Of course.” He exchanged nods with his friend’s boyfriend. “It’s good of you to come.”
“Xian’er invited me.”
Wei Wuxian’s face broke out in a huge grin at that proclamation, and the expression on Lan Zhan’s face might as well have had heart-eyes for all to see. Jiang Cheng resisted the urge to retch at the sight.
Suddenly, his phone began to ring, immediately attracting everyone’s attention.
“Ah, excuse me a moment, I should take this.” He pulled out his phone as he stepped away to a quieter corner of the hall. “Huaisang, what’s up?”
“I sent you half a dozen texts that you didn’t reply to, so I figured you just might need a reprieve.”
He lifted a hand to cover his mouth lest his family see the small smile he wore at the sound of Nie Huaisang’s voice. “Admit it, you were worried I’d killed someone.”
“Have you?”
“Of course not!”
“I’m almost disappointed.”
Jiang Cheng rolled his eyes.
“Anyway, I know it’s been a rough night for you,” Nie Huaisang continued, “so this is your chance if you need an out – you can say an emergency came up at work or at your apartment or something.”
“You’re a life saver.” He sighed. “I’d say a night at home is better than this, but fuck, a frontal lobotomy would be better than this.”
“Well, sure, you can go home if you like-” There was a pause as someone laughed in the background on Nie Huaisang’s end. “Or, you can join us. If you’re interested, that is. It’s just the five of us, but we have so much food, and I’m sure Da-ge and A-Niang would be happy to have someone to talk hockey with.”
The sounds of the noisy banquet hall faded as Jiang Cheng focused on Nie Huaisang’s voice. “You’re sure I wouldn’t be in the way?”
“Is that Jiang Cheng?” a woman’s voice could be heard over the line. “You tell him we have some custard buns with his name on them.”
Nie Huaisang chuckled. “You heard Mama, you’re more than welcome. No pressure, though. I just thought it might be a nice way to spend Spring Festival.”
Jiang Cheng looked back into the hall in time to see his mother and father begin an argument over something or other while Wei Changze and Cangse Sanren looked at them with pity. Jin Zixuan looked lost since Jiang Yanli had left with Jin Ling. And a number of aunties had surrounded Wei Wuxian and Lan Zhan offering them red envelopes that they dutifully attempted to refuse.
“Text me the address and I’ll be there as soon as I can get out of here.”
❤️ This Time Around
by KouriArashi
T, 83k, JGY & NHS & WWX
Summary: Years after Nie Mingjue’s death, Nie Huaisang goes back in time to prevent it from happening by killing Meng Yao before he can become a monster. Nothing goes as planned. Nie Huaisang gave a heavy sigh. None of it excused the things Jin Guangyao had done. None of it would make him forgive his brother’s death. But did it have to be that way? This was a child. A child who was crying in the night, on the cold stone he had as a bed, because someone he looked up to had hurt him. How could he blame him for what he had become? How could he say that this boy deserved death? Who was he to make that judgment? Could he save both his brothers? Or: Nie Huaisang accidentally adopts a bunch of chaos gremlins.
Mojo's comments: I am such a sucker for a pied piper of hard-luck orphans. In this case, it's Nie Huaisang, who is such a funny caretaker, he kind of reminds me of the Dread Pirate Roberts, ya know -- 'Good night, Westley. Good work. Sleep well. I'll most likely kill you in the morning.' -- except in a less explicit and more paternal way. Heh. So, his moral compass is very gray, but his actions show a heart of gold, and the kids are very clear on which one speaks the loudest. The first one he picks up is Meng Yao, around the age of 7, then Wei Ying, then Xue Yang (who is a bitey, hilarious, feral cat) and lastly, Mo Yue (not yet, and never Xuanyu, since nhs stole his name back in the beginning of this adventure). So in one way, this story is the Chinese xianxia's answer to Louisa May Alcott's Little Men, except with a time travelling single dad. So nhs wanders around the edges of the cultivators' world, claiming to be a disciple of Baoshan Sanren, hanging out with different sects to get his boys some training (and maybe learn some secrets) and periodically, maybe, slaying a sect leader on the down low. It's magnificent.
Excerpt: Nie Huaisang took a deep breath and thought about screaming, or crying, or throwing both of these brats in a river. “My brother was a good man. He was just and righteous. And he was murdered by someone he thought was a friend because he stood in the way of that person gaining power. My friend who made the talismans lost everyone he loved and threw himself off a cliff because he tried to stand up to the people in power and they destroyed him. I will not - I will not - watch that happen to anyone else I care about. Do you understand?” “I understand,” Meng Yao said, and leaned against him. Ridiculous, Nie Huaisang thought, and wanted to scream even louder. His brother’s murderer trying to comfort him. Jin Guangyao hadn’t killed Wei Wuxian, and hadn’t even been wholly responsible for his death, but he had certainly played a key part in it. Now this child had the audacity to try to console him, as if he was an entirely different person. Because he was.
time travel, fix it, pov nie huaisang, kid fic, accidental baby acquisition, parent-child relationship, introspection, character study, domestic, grief/mourning, found family, growing up, pov wei wuxian, pov alternating, cloud recesses study arc, happy ending, everybody lives/nobody dies, angst, politics, past child abuse, moral ambiguity, @gingersnapwolves
