Butterfly Effect
In which a 29-year-old gay LXC married his 26-year-old family friend JC (who happens to be a trans man) out of convenience so that both of their traditional families would leave them alone and let them live their lives, without thinking that he will find love in this marriage.
N/A: Xicheng AU based on that Redditor who shared his touching AF love story.
For the #CultivaTober2020, another story that no one asked me. Incomplete for the lack of time.
Day 23: Butterfly
.
A lot of people like to think that love comes before marriage, oftentimes it doesn't always work out that way.
Sometimes people get married because of different pressures and expectations put on them by society and their families, but that doesn't mean you can't find love in this kind of situation.
Lan Xichen didn’t expected falling in love with his husband.
They didn’t marry for love, actually they married to make a giant scam on their families.
It maybe be weird, but Lan Xichen was a gay man that came from a wealthy and traditional Chinese family where he managed the business extension abroad.
And as the current heir of the company after his father’s death, the elders didn’t liked when he came up openly about his homosexuality and they didn’t accept it. No matter how many times Xichen said them that he wouldn’t marry a man, they still wanted him very married to a lady from a good and influential family.
One day Xichen got tired and said them clearly that he will just stay single, so they should stay out of his business.
That kind of worked for four years, until the last year when uncle Lan Qiren trapped him in a visit with a this “girl” that was the single “daughter” of one of their business allies and left them alone in a room.
Xichen looked at her, she was pretty indeed. His posture emitted an air of confidence and his almond gray eyes resembled storm clouds, like lighting bolts would appear in any moment to attack, her short black hair was pulled into a bun with a purple ribbon and she wore a big violet hoodie that covered all her body curves.
It was so obvious that neither of them wanted to be here.
Anyways, Xichen didn’t expected that this person would misunderstand the whole situation:
“Listen to me, because I’m not going to repeat myself. I’m a trans male and I’m not out of my family and I DON’T WANT to get married to you”, blunted out the person. “You don’t want to be married with me because I am a MAN, so just leave it!”
Lan Xichen blinked, really shocked.
Did she.... Did he really thought that I set up the visit?
“I don’t even like women, what do you mean?” Xichen babbled, confused at least.
The boy looked at him, suspicious.
“What did you said?”
Xichen massaged the left side of his forehead, without knowing if the should laugh or cry at the turn of the events. “Well, I’m gay.”
When he said it, he didn’t wanted to be funny.
He was serious.
“Oh my god,” mumbled the boy before to start laughing loudly. “My mom will die if she knows!”
At least one of them was having a good time, finding the whole thing hilarious.
Xichen didn’t noticed when he started to laugh too.
Well, could you blame him? This was so ridiculous. Yet, they ended being friends after that unfortunate turn of the events. They even exchanged numbers before to part away.
.     ·  ✦
“I knew it was her, she’s perfect. Well mannered and ...”
Uncle Qiren was delighted at the idea that Xichen was cured from homosexuality, the poor man still has hopes that he would change his mind and will fall in love with the little daughter of Jiang Fengmian haha.
If you only know, uncle. Thought Xichen, having a good time that night.
Unlike Wangji who seemed worried, he was his only support in those kinda family meetings.
“Brother.”
Xichen smiled at his brother, relieved that everything ended in good terms even if it was a disaster. “Don’t worry, Wangji. I know what I’m doing.”
He couldn’t be more wrong.
Wangji looked at him, unconvinced. “If you say so.”
However, Xichen didn’t overthink it in the moment because Jiang Wanyin was someone really nice to talk by the way, so he keep talking with him.
And they talked a lot through nine weeks.
What made both families to get excited at the match, they never got this far with any other candidates.
So they kept pushing them about marriage.
Xichen didn’t knew why, but one day they just accepted to marry each other. He remember that both were "like yeah, screw it" and that’s how they got quickly married in Yunmeng a summer day of August to get their families off of their backs.
Wanyin moved at Gusu with him and both pulled a giant scam on their families and got away with it.
No matter how you see it, it was a win-win situation. Wanyin lived his own life and take the guest room for himself while Xichen didn’t get more cutting remarks about being gay because he has a “wife” now.
Life was easygoing, so he let Wanyin cut his hair short and stop dressing feminine as his family forced him.
It was a little gesture, but that small change resulted in something unexpected.
.     ·  ✦
The things had been so smooth sailing between them that they even adopted a dog, Xichen was having a good time when he come to his house now that he has a roommate and a pet.
It felt more like a home than the place where he’s slept.
He didn’t noticed before, but his house didn’t felt like a home before he married.
Wanyin resume his university studies and made new friends, he was so comfortable and happy that he started to cooking dinner for both of them recently. Sometimes Xichen couldn’t eat with him because he returned at home passed by midnight, but he tried to return early at home to share at least a couple of dinners together at week.
That night Xichen got a little late, but Wanyin stayed with him in the dinning room. Looking him eat everything and even repeating a dish.
“Were you hungry, huh?”
Xichen was used to not talk when he eat because he was educated like that, but he found rude to not reply his husband at the same time. So he did an exception that night.
After all, Wanyin cooked that delicious food for him and waited for him.
“I didn’t have lunch today.”
Wanyin looked at him, with a bothered frown in his eyebrows. It reminded Xichen the first time that they share a dinner in home and he couldn’t stand the spicy food that Wanyin cooked.
That time he thought he would die, but he survived to Wanyin spicy food.
Now he’s getting to used to piquant food.
“I can cook your lunch.”
“You don’t have to do it, Wanyin.”
“What kind of husband am I if I left my spouse starving?” Wanyin teased him, smirking.
.     ·  ✦
Next morning Xichen didn’t expected that Wanyin would fulfill his word and made a lunch for him, even his coworkers seemed surprised to see him eating in his office instead to skipping the lunch when he had important meetings.
That day he had a meeting with Nie Mingjue and Jin Guangyao, so they planned to invite him to eat a hotpot without knowing that Xichen would refuse.
When they saw why he refused, they stayed to accompany him.
It seems that it was a friendship duty annoy at your recently married friends.
“Now Xichen-ge gots lovely lunchs made by his wife, I’m jealous”, said Jin Guangyao as he looked for food delivery on his telephone for him and Mingjue, they didn’t want to leave his friend alone if they could tease him.
Mingjue nudged at Xichen, grinning “As your childhood friend, I demand to be the godfather of your first child.”
“That’s unfair, Da-ge! Let Xichen-ge chose the godfather!!”
Xichen smiles nervously at his friends, feeling a cold sweet in this forehead.
“We are not having kids.”
Mingjue raised an eye brown, confused. “Why not?”
Xichen felt conflicted.
Well, these were his friends and he should trust them, right? He wasn’t ashamed of his husband, actually he felt proud that he could be himself since they met.
“Uhm, how I could say this? My “wife” is a trans male, so...”
“Oh.”
“It’s complicated, we got it.” Ends the conversation Jin Guangyao, putting a hand in Mingjue’s mouth.
.     ·  ✦
Months passed fast and it was December when Xichen realized that his husband started to getting closer to him.
Not like they were strangers before, but something changed after Christmas.
Wanyin started to watch tv with him in the sofa when Xichen was in home, eating with him every time they can, buying him stuff and even texting him more frequently, sending photos of him and Huan Huan when he go to walk their puppy. He even started staying in Xichen’s room to facetime his mom because she always complained about how he always facetimed alone so he came to Xichen bed to get him to say hi.
And after a while, Wanyin got tired to get out of Xichen’s bed to go back to his own to sleep, so he moved to Xichen room permanently.
Before Xichen knew, they escalated to cuddling awaken and sleeping.
Contrary to Xichen could think, it wasn’t that weird.
Actually it felt heartwarming to hold his tiny husband on his arms, specially when their puppy dog was in the middle of them. Enjoying the warm between his owners.
It made him feel something, but he wasn’t sure what.
.     ·  ✦
“When are you two going to give us a grandchild?” Wanyin’s mother asked them one day via facetime.
Wanyin went all red, screaming. “Mom!”
It was obvious that he didn’t wanted to have this conversation with his mother.
Xichen was beside him in the bed, working on his laptop before to speak in the name of the two. “We want to enjoy our youth first. So no kids for now.”
Hoping that Wanyin wouldn’t mind with his idea.
They didn’t talked about children, yet.
His mother-in-law sounded a bit beaten after that, but she insisted on encourage Wanyin to make his own family as if their dog wasn’t their son already.
When Wanyin cut the call, Xichen finished his work so he put the computer aside.
“Sorry, Xichen.”
“Why? It’s not your fault that your mother want another grandchild.”
Wanyin looked at him before sprawled out on top of him, doing random things and Xichen was unsure what it means. “Then, how many children do you want?”
He asked so suddenly that got Xichen out of guard.
“What?”
“I’m joking, do you want children anyways?”
He was always like that since they got close to each other last year, always joking around him.
Sometimes Xichen didn’t know if he was joking or being serious.
“I don’t know, I never thought about having kids.” Xichen blurt out of his mind, smiling at the thought that they have this level of communication to talk about things like this. “What about you?”
“We have Huan Huan, enough for me.”
“I don’t think your mother
“Well, Huan Huan would be the only grandson that I’m going to give her.”
.     ·  ✦
They almost kissed twice, one time when they were cuddling in the bed and the other one when Wanyin started sitting on Xichen’s lap, nuzzling him and stuff like that.
Their faces were so close that Xichen thought they were going to kiss.
It was so close that he could feel his hot breath, but then Wanyin went all red and jumped ship at the last minute. Xichen felt so disappointed that they didn't kissed already, but he thought that he understand why Wanyin might not kiss him.
He must be thinking that he doesn't want this or something like that.
Contrary to what people could think about his husband, Wanyin had the tendency to overthink things.
He still was working on this, but Xichen couldn’t handle with the self-isolation and the romantic? tension in the house every time he saw Wanyin flustering and getting shy around him.
It was odd after met the confident and a little arrogant side of his husband, so this new side made him feel things that he didn’t know he could feel for Wanyin.
Xichen even feel butterflies in the stomach every time they get close for any reason.
He just wants to kiss Wanyin so badly that he felt embarrassed.
He was so screwed.
.     ·  ✦
One day, Xichen couldn’t stand the situation anymore. He was still a little unsure about his own feelings so he talked long and tended with his friends at the bar about how he wants to take Wanyin on dates and kiss him and let him speak as much as he wants because Wanyin likes to talk about the things that he loves and how much he loves their dog, he could talk about Huan Huan all day and Xichen wouldn't mind, he loves their puppy too.
In the end, he ended asking advice to asking his husband out.
“I want him be happy and I want myself be happy. So how can I ask my literal husband of nine months to be in an actual relationship with me?”
"Talk to him. Tell him what you’re feeling. Ask if he feels the same way," said Mingjue.
“You made it sound that simple, Da-ge.”
"I think you should let him know that you’re open to having a more intimate relationship. It seems he’s feeling something too since he’s cuddling you,” added Jin Guangyao.
“I don’t know what to do.”
Mingjue take a a big sip of wine before to talk again. “Just close your eyes and jump, man. You got this."

It had not even been a month since the passing of Jin GuangYao and Lan XiChen was not feeling better at all. If things kept on going that way he might head into seclusion soon rather than half ass all of his work like he was doing right now. He was never feeling like doing anything and right now he was feeling it even less since he had to stand his uncle's outrage for the eleventh time at nine in the morning.
"... Anything could happen to WangJi at any moment and we don't even know where they are right now! The inconceivable, utter disrespect to the most basic premises of morality! He did not only stick his cut-sleeveness on my WangJi but he also… he also forced him to elope! Just like that! Can you believe it XiChen!? The shame he has forced on our Sect by dropping off the last sense of decency by not getting married!???"
Lan XiChen wondered for a moment if it was wise to remind his own uncle of rule number seventy five on the wall of rules: "Causing Noise is Prohibited" to satisfy his own pettiness or if his uncle was in need of another cup of tea before any kind of smart backlash when both men heard a coughing coming up from the exterior of the room.
Lan XiChen beamed as much as his proper upbringing could allow. Standing still and quite elegantly poised, like the Sect Leader he was, was Jiang WanYin.
"Sect Leader Jiang! What a pleasant surprise! We didn't expect you until…" Lan XiChen turned to look at the hour and realized his own mistake of letting his uncle rant for literal hours now "oh, Oh. Please forgive me, Sect Leader Jiang. I have failed to properly receive you at the appointed hour."
"Please, no need to apologize, Sect Leader Lan, Master Lan Qiren." Jiang WanYin bowed to both men as appropriate to the occasion "I would have waited without a problem for you but I must admit your conversation got me quite intrigued. Is master Lan Quiren implying that he wouldn't have that much of an issue with a pair of cut-sleeve relationship were they properly married?"
Lan Qiren scoffed. "I admit that would be a great start."
Jiang WanYin's smile widened wildly for just a glimpse in a way that reminded Lan XiChen of those moments he knew he had the winning hand during the few times they fought together at the Sunshot Campaign. A thing that made him excitedly anticipate the great Sandu Shengshou's upcoming actions.
"I am quite relieved to hear of this. If that is the case, Master Lan Qiren, there's a proposal I would like, no, I would love to discuss with you."
---
Wei Wuxian was somehow splayed on top of Little Apple, looking at the increasingly brightening sky while Lan WangJi was pulling the reins, walking towards the closest city after being travelling through the mountainside a couple of days.
"Ahahahaha oh Lan Zhan, my Lan Zhan, did you really see that grave digger's face when all the corpses around him began to rise? Ahahahaha~"
Lan WangJi smiled warmly at his husband's figure. How could he deny him of such pleasures when they brought him so much happiness? Especially when it meant they were doing good. Keeping the spirits to their proper rest.
When they arrived at the city, the place was bustling with energy despite being so early in the morning but it was not the usual one from a large place like this, there was some sort of effervescence and giddiness in the way everyone behaved that both men felt was just a tad bit too excited.
Being a naturally curious person, Wei Wuxian asked the nearest steamed buns stall owner.
"Excuse me, Ma'am" he took a couple of buns while Lan WangJi was already taking out the money to pay. "Can you tell us what is going on that the city is so excited about?"
"Oh my boy! Haven't you heard!?" Said the owner, almost jumping on her heels as if she had just been waiting for someone to ask "The leaders of the Lan and the Jiang sects are getting married!"
Wei Wuxian paled and felt like he had suddenly become a walking corpse while he heard a couple of coins dropping to the floor by his side. He forced a smile on his face.
"Surely that's… that's not right? Is it not, maybe, a pair of disciples?"
"Oh, no, no, no. If it was that they wouldn't be announcing it to the whole world, would they? Just look at the announcements board at the plaza! If you can't trust this old hag, then you can surely trust an official document."
Wei Wuxian somehow brought up a more charming smile "My dear lady, I could never not trust someone that has so much more experience that I can ever dream of"
The old lady cackled while receiving the coins Lan WangJi had picked up again "oh my, you're such a flirt. Here, have another bun for the ride."
Wei Wuxian thanked her and turned around with his mouth open only to see that his man was well beyond him, already walking towards the plaza. He ran towards him and reached the board.
There, in the middle of it all, was a very official looking paper with celebratory imagery surrounding the edges of the announcement.
"It is with great pleasure to announce that the leaders of the Jiang and the Lan sects are organising a wedding to be held in Lotus Pier during the auspicious upcoming new moon of the month of Xin Si at sunset where they expect to celebrate a wedding that will tighten up the relations between both regions of Gusu and Yunmeng. All blessings for the grooms to wed."
The announcement ended with a beautiful seal that joined both sects imagery, a lotus flower floating over a cloud.
Wei Wuxian read the thing three times before anything made any kind of sense and then one time more.
"The upcoming moon of… oh heavens, Lan Zhan. That is in eight days!!! This is… We cannot stay here! We have to stop this nonsense wedding!"
Lan WangJi was looking at his soulmate with a stern glare that was completely agreeing with Wei Wuxian's exclamation.
"Mn."
Soon enough, they were running to the stable where they had left Little Apple and began their journey towards Wei Wuxian's old home.
---
The day arrived, the whole city of Yunmeng was dressed for the celebration, people wandering excitedly throughout the streets, waiting for the announcement that the marriage was completed. Inside of Lotus Pier, two fine figures in relatively simple red robes were alone, kneeling already at the ancient hall, just waiting for the exact hour. A red veil covering the head of one of them.
"After knowing you through all these years and battles, I have to be honest and say that I know I shouldn't, but I am still impressed about your boldness. Sect Leader Jiang."
Jiang WanYin laughed "Turns out I'm not only good at slashing things, eh?" He winked at the elegant face behind the veil. "Also please call me Jiang WanYin, I hope we're well past certain formalities after this."
The veiled man snickered "Very well, then please do call me Lan XiChen. I'd feel quite saddened if you felt there was any need for formalities with me as well, Jiang WanYin."
Jiang WanYin smiled brightly at the man by his side.
A couple of minutes passed when Lan XiChen began to fidget.
"Are you sure they will come?"
"Oh trust me, I don't know about your HanGuang-Jun but Wei Wuxian will definitely be here. And if he is here…"
"Then WangJi is going to be here as well."
Jiang WanYin nodded in agreement. As if they had summoned the chaotic couple, they heard a commotion starting on the Swords Hall.
"It's the Yiling Patriarch and HanGuang-Jun!"
"Somebody stop them!"
Both men heard the sounds of blades and general fighting getting nearer at each second, sometimes yells of pain.
"Will your disciples be alright, Jiang WanYin?"
"Are you kidding me? They were ecstatic when I told them they would be able to test their skills against the Second Jade of Gusu-Lan. Not that they're anywhere near him but that will help them assess their own strengths."
Lan XiChen snickered. Soon enough, the commotion was right behind them and suddenly the doors of the Ancient Hall burst open and in came Wei Wuxian and Lan WangJi.
"JIANG CHENG!"
"XIONGZHANG!"
The pair in red stood up from their kneeling position and turned to look at the newcomers.
"Ah, my dear WangJi! How auspicious that you managed to arrive in time!"
"Yeah, we would have had a real problem if you didn't show up."
The couple at the doors looked at each other in shock and then glared at their counterparts while approaching them. Wei Wuxian fisted Jiang Cheng's robes and pulled him forward while Lan WangJi almost fell on Lan XiChen's arms, almost imperceptibly glazed eyes.
"Can you tell me what sort of nonsense this is!?"
"Xiongzhang, please!"
Both men in red gave their brothers a smile, albeit one would have been considered saintly while the other devilish. Suddenly, the doors of the Ancient Hall closed once more, startling Wei Wuxian and Lan WangJi. They turned around and saw, appalled some very well known faces.
"HanGuang-Jun, Senior Wei, I'm really glad to see you're well."
"I mean, not like we actually cared but…"
"Oh, don't be a liar! You're the one who wanted to see Senior Wei the most!"
"Can we get going with this? We'll be late for the banquet at this rate."
Before he was able to completely understand what the junior quarter was doing there, Lan WangJi heard his brother.
"Please forgive me WangJi, we cannot afford more stalling, you are indeed a little bit late."
And just like that, he clearly sensed how his spiritual energy was blocked by his own brother's hand.
"Alright, you can take him, Jiang WanYin."
"Gotcha!" Exclaimed the man while leaning forward and carrying a very startled Wei Wuxian like a potato sack and jumping through the threshold that the juniors had opened once more, disappearing through the hallways.
"W… Wait a second! What are you doing!? Lan Zhan! LAN ZHAN SAVE ME!!!"
"WEI YING!!!"
Lan WangJi did his best to get away from his brother's grasp while the frantic screams of his lover moved away from them but it was impossible without his spiritual energy. He turned to look at his brother, a pair of tears menacing to roll over his cheek.
"Now, now, don't look like that, let's go get you changed and refreshed, you'll be able to see him soon."
Unable to do much more, he allowed himself to be guided through another hall towards a guestroom with a sigh, shoulders slightly falling.
"Tche, what's all the drama for? It's not like they're gonna be apart forever."
"Look who's talking, Mistress."
"You-!"
"Please guys, let's not do this right now."
"Yes! A wedding is a very important occasion!"
Chided by his brother, Lan WangJi took a quick bath and began to dress himself in layers of increasingly dark blue without paying too much attention but stopped when he finally noticed the outer garment his brother, now properly dressed with his best silver and light blue robes, was providing. He had in his hands a deep red robe accented with dark blue and silver embroidery reminiscing of clouds around the edges that was to be matched with a dark blue, almost black sash. He looked at the clearly elegant garment in awe and then turned to look at Lan XiChen.
"Xiongzhang, this…"
Lan XiChen gave him a soft smile, already holding a comb. "Come on, dress up, let your big brother do your hair."
Lan WangJi's eyes widened up in comprehension. He felt his ears burn when he finished dressing himself and sat down.
"Xiongzhang, I'm sorry. I thought, we thought…"
Lan XiChen let out a soft chuckle.
"We know." Lan XiChen began to brush softly WangJi's hair.
Both men got lost in the process of brushing and hairstyling, reminiscing childhood days where the older man took care of the younger in the same way. Lan XiChen sighed while pulling up the hair for the bun after being done with the brushing.
"You know WangJi, I'm really glad I'm able to be here for you today."
Lan WangJi frowned. "Xiongzhang?"
It was barely a whisper but that didn't stop Lan XiChen to feel the worry.
"I'm going into seclusion WangJi… Don't move, you'll ruin the bun…" Lan XiChen sighed once more "Maybe one of the reasons I agreed to this mad scheme was precisely because I did not want to miss this particular day and knowing how erratic your movements can be I was not sure if I was going to be here otherwise."
Lan WangJi looked downwards, faintly blushing, feeling his brother fix the decorative pins.
"Which is why I also wanted to tell you…" Lan XiChen grabbed Lan WangJi's forehead band, and began to arrange it on the hairstyle he had fixed, oddly out of place in the middle of so much red and dark blue. "That I don't really have much to tell you about the importance of treasuring your soulmate, since I saw you learn that lesson yourself." Lan WangJi saw a tear trailing down his brother's cheek through the mirror. "...But I can tell you that I am happy for you. And no matter where you go from now on, I hope your travels bring you nothing more than bliss and joy. And that I support you, today and tomorrow and all the years to come."
Lan WangJi felt a knot on his throat.
"There, it's done. Let's go back to the Ancient Hall. I'm sure your future husband is there already."
Lan WangJi stood up and turned to look at his brother. Lan XiChen smiled and placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Ready?"
Lan WangJi looked at his brother for a second and threw himself at him with a hug. Lan XiChen hugged him back a little startled and felt more than heard his little brother's soft sniffle. He hugged him tighter.
"I love you too."
---
Lan WangJi walked inside the Hall once more. He was shocked when he saw his uncle standing there as well. Feeling overwhelmed, he walked towards him and bowed. The old man scoffed and shooed him towards the altar. Lan WangJi nodded and turned towards the center of the room.
The perfect figure of his husband to be was already kneeling in front of the altar, not slouched or slant but immaculately poised. Bright red gown speckled with gold and lavender motifs of lotus flowers in both the sash and the veil. His face was barely visible but his body showed he was clearly moved. He knelt down by his side.
"Wei Ying"
His voice had been but a breath but Wei Wuxian had heard him alright. He turned towards him with the brightest smile.
"Look at this Lan Zhan," he whispered "We're finally in front of them… Do you… do you think shijie would have given us her blessing? And Uncle Jiang? And Madam Yu?"
Lan WangJi gave him the softest smile yet.
"Mn."
Wei Wuxian took in a deep breath. Clearly trying to restrain the tears that were already rolling through his face and nodded. Unable to say a thing, very unlike his usual character.
The ceremony went incredibly fast after that. Both Jiang WanYin and Lan XiChen said a couple of words as the ones preceding the ceremony, Jiang WanYin dressed in proper purple, navy and gold robes. The grooms exchanged bows, too short and surprisingly not embarrassing from Wei Wuxian, too long and incredibly bold from Lan WangJi, and then prostrated three times as per the tradition.
The juniors, the ones acting as witnesses standing behind were all tearing by the end. Jin Ling had been the first to be noticed but Lan JingYi's teasing was not really effective since he was crying as well.
The banquet had been a success. The entire city was celebrating the newlyweds after all so the noise and celebration was everywhere. Around nine, the newlyweds finally bid their goodnight and stepped away from the hall in the middle of catcalling and whistles that Wei Wuxian encouraged, absolutely elated after three bottles of wine. Being carried bridal style by his now very official husband.
The following day they were caught by the juniors before they could run away on Little Apple once more and received a thorough scorn from Jin Ling who screamed at them something about being already married and not seeing the point of acting like a pair of runaway, wanted criminals anyway and that Wei Wuxian better go see him at LanLing or else he would definitely hunt him.
Meanwhile, Jiang WanYin was supervising that not a place had been left uncleaned, with Lan XiChen by his side.
"Are you sure you're not gonna say goodbye?"
"If I say goodbye now, Wei Wuxian won't need to come back later." Jiang WanYin said matter of factly "What about you? I don't see you at the backdoor of Lotus Pier right now."
"I already said all that I needed. Now I feel like I can finally go into seclusion."
Jiang WanYin eyed his counterpart carefully and scoffed.
"You don't approve of that."
"Obviously Not. You're saying it like you're about to die."
Lan XiChen laughed tiredly.
"You're being dramatic."
"All I'm saying is that this seclusion thing is not going to work for you at all. If you don't come out of your personal coffin after a year I'll come raise you from the dead."
Lan XiChen gave out a tired scoff but said nothing more about it. After all, there was no way Jiang WanYin would know him better than himself.
"I'll take that as your permission."
Finished the man by his side, ending the conversation.
Both leaders kept on supervising the cleansing of the whole Lotus Pier and making sure it went back to its usual state while, on another side, a figure in black mounted on a donkey waved goodbye to a bunch of sniffling teenagers while a figure in white pulled softly the donkey's reins.

Cloud Recess’ Wrath
Chapter 3: Xicheng Fam + Jin Ling
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“I can’t believe you! I have no words anymore! Why do you insist on getting into fights with Jin Ling?! And wait til your mother hears about this Jin Ling! Aiiiishh!” Yelled the walking angry ball of purple also known as Jiang Cheng.
He had been training some newbies that came to his establishment to learn self defense when he got a call from the school, well his brother to be more percise, telling him that his son and Jin Ling got into another fight. The fight ending with Jin Ling having a black eye and Jingyi having a busted lip. “Not my fault dad! He started it.” Jingyi complained.
“I did not! You started the fight!” Jin Ling retorted, refusing to get thrown under the bus so easily. “Don’t lie to Uncle, just admit the truth that you started the fight!”
“Why you little-“ Jingyi curse went unfinished as his father pulled the both of them by the ears. “Will you two quit it before you both lose video game privileges?! Jin Ling go upstairs to your room and do your homework.” Jiang Cheng exasperated, pinching the bridge of his nose. Jin Ling didn’t need to be told twice as he ran up the stairs that connected the training facility to the apartment up to his room.
“Now as for you mister. One week, just one week without getting a call from your teachers or from the principal or Wei Ying that you got into another fight. I know you take after me and have a strong sense of justice but this has to stop. Jingyi please understand that I worry, we worry, I know you believe you can handle any opponent in a fight but that’ll last only for so long.” Jiang Cheng explained, he lifted his hand to move his son’s hair from his face. “The last thing I want is to get a call that my baby is in the hospital.”
Jingyi may have his dad’s temper but he also had his strong touch with his emotions, the thought of worrying his parents if he ended up in the hospital was too much. Tears spilled. “I-I just hate how those jerks belittle me because I’m a beta....I-I don’t want to worry or scare you and papa....I-I just can’t help it.” He cried.
Jiang Cheng pulled him into a hug and rubbed the top of his head. “I know baby...I know. I dealt with the same thing. Next time someone gives you shit for being a beta, just be the bigger man and educate them with your words. Don’t sink to their level and throw hands.” Jiang Cheng said, Jingyi nodding yes without moving from his dad’s arm.
“Everything alright down here? Jin Ling ran to his room with his tail between his legs.” Came another voice, both turned around to see Lan Xichen coming down the stairs. “More or less? Jingyi got into another fight at school.” Cheng explained to his fiancé.
Xichen didn’t need to hear the rest to put 2 and 2 together, he simply opened his arms for Jingyi to run into and that he did. “Papa....” Jingyi cried as he was sandwiched between his parents. “Shhhh, let it out. You know violence is not the answer but I’m proud you stand for yourself and those you care about, you remind me of your dad.” Xichen said with a gentle smile.
“Shut it you.” Cheng retorted flustered, still not used ti being complimented or praised by Xichen. Jingyi sniffed his tears away before speaking up. “Gross, if your gonna be all couple-y then I’m going to go do my homework.”
“Why you little brat.” Cheng tsked but couldn’t hold the smile in, never his life did he think he would have this yet look at him now. Adopted a wonderful son and about to be married to the most amazing man he ever met in 4 months. Xichen chuckled at the sight in front of him. “Go easy on him for now Lotus. And yes you do your homework before you forget.” Xichen said, wiping the tear tracks from his son’s face.
Jingyi nodded and headed up the stairs. “That kid is going to give me gray hairs before I’m 30, you think after the first few fights people would take the hint and mess with him anymore.” Cheng said, trying to calm his raging nerves and heart at the thought of anyone hurting his son. Xichen sensed his frustration and pulled Cheng into his arms and kissed the frustration out of him.
“I thought we promised to shoulder each other’s frustrations, so why are you still keeping it all inside of you?” Xichen asked, Cheng hiding his flushed face in Xichen’s chest. “Old habits die hard I guess, 20 years of pent up frustration will do that to you. You know I’m not good with my emotions...” He pouted.
“I beg to differ, you are very intune with your emotions. Its one of things that made me fall for you~” Xichen purred, getting the desired reaction he wanted out of Cheng. “Yah don’t say such things all of a sudden! At least warn me...” He said very flustered and whacked his fiance in the chest.
Xichen couldn’t help the chuckle that slipped out, his fiancé was just too adorable for words. “Anything for you my Lotus Blossom.”
To be continued...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ahhhhhhhhhh more fluffy, this stuff is very relaxing =w= Enjoy it while it lasts though cause once I start the angst, I ain’t gonna hold back.

XiCheng Fic Recs
Fic recs featuring XiCheng with some side pairings. I decided to do this list so I can keep track. Basically, these fics are extra long coz the bitch in me doesn’t like to read short fics lol. All are complete works though. I hope this helps my fellow XiCheng shippers! I am a bitch for XiCheng and I am proud? LOL
Little Lotus by RennieOnIceCream (XiCheng mentions of WangXian)
Summary: If one asked Lan Xichen about having children a few years ago, he would’ve said the idea of a family was nice, but it was entirely impossible for him.
Having the leader of the Jiang Sect for a partner, he should’ve known -- impossibilities were always achievable.
Mpreg XiCheng fic that is light and fluffy! This is more like the journey of pregnancy featuring XiCheng.
Wish That You Were Here by Achromos (XiCheng, JingYi)
Summary: Ever since he was young, Jingyi knew that he was missing a parent. The thing that bothered him the most about this was that his a-die was clearly suffering and lonely. At first, he had to settle for stories of his fuqin - the First Jade of Lan, a beautiful and powerful cultivator. But then he was sent to study in the Cloud Recesses, where he met the other side of his family. He was determined to find out why his parents won't speak to each other; what happened fifteen years ago. How he can perhaps mend the rift between them.
A fic where Jingyi is XiCheng’s love child. So much angst and it hurts.
Broken Mirror by akanezora (XiCheng AU side WangXian)
Summary: When Jiang Cheng left Lan Xichen life, he brought a secret with him. Years later, Lan Xichen caught up with that secret. (Jingyi as Xicheng Lovechild)
A fic where Jingyi is XiCheng’s love child in Modern AU. This is just so cute with a little bit of angst on both sides also, WangXian is a side pair here.
Being An Uncle Is Anything But Easy by TheWildJoker (XiCheng)
Summary: Jiang Wanyin, Jiang Cheng, Sandu Shengshou, uncle of Jin Ling, brother of Jiang Yanli. He held many titles, and worked with many different hats, but the thing in his life that was missing most was someone to assist him in his struggle at raising a barely month old, orphaned child. Cue the entrance of the eldest jade of Lan, prim, proper, and loved by all. When first met with the worn out Jiang Cheng his inability to leave others alone while they're struggling most kicked in, and leads to a lot of confusion, bad decisions, and then finally a chance for the both of them to be healed from wounds of their past.
Aaah, I love this fic so much. Basically, it started when Jiang Cheng was landed with the responsibility of raising A-Ling because he just refused or rather, he just didn’t trust Jin Guangyao with the upbringing of Jin Ling. Also, some cute A-Yuan and A-Ling interaction for those who love ZhuiLing innocence.
Never Had I Ever by Kicchin (XiCheng side WangXian/NieYao)
Summary: Nie Mingjue is almost certain that Jin Guangyao has an ulterior motive for dating his best friend, Lan Xichen. However despite voicing his concerns, his best friend seems unconvinced and Lan Xichen continues to date the said man. Unable to give up just yet, Nie Mingjue tries a different tactic--convincing his best friend the man is not the right person for him by setting him up. Fortunately for him, Wei Wuxian's youngest brother is very much single and seems to be just the kind of person his best friend needs. Can Jiang Cheng truly change Lan Xichen's mind, or will Nie Mingjue's plan is a disaster from the beginning?
A Modern AU - University style fic wherein Jiang Cheng is a freshman and Xichen is just a dork who falls in love with unsuspecting Jiang Cheng lol. This is funny but it has that tooth-decaying element XD Also, drunk Xichen is always chaotic but can be so sweet.
The Beginner’s Guide to Moving On by messenger18 (XiCheng side WangXian)
Summary: Jiang Cheng is jaded, bitter and miserable. Lan Xichen isn't sure he can ever trust anyone again. They've always been at the periphery of each other's lives, perpetually visible but never touching, and it seems it's going to stay that way. Then Jin Ling and Lan Sizhui fall in love, and everything changes.
Thrown together as the only single men in a family full of couples, neither is exactly happy about their situation. But when two lonely people find each other, sometimes they can be a little less lonely together.
A slow burn fic that involves awkward meetings, building friendship, humor and fluff that you don’t have any choice but to read more lol. But I strongly recommend this one for XiCheng fans!
葬花/Zàng huā by CrystallizedPen (XiCheng Mpreg)
Summary: One day, Sect Leader Lan just disappeared, no one knew where he went, nor why he left, not even the people closest to him knew. He left behind his sword, his token, and his forehead ribbon. He left behind everything except the silver bell that was given to him by a person that he loved, and whom he thought would love him too. Their love was beautiful like a blooming flower. But, apparently he was wrong. He should have buried this love deep inside his heart, like burying a flower that was never meant to bloom.
Heavy angst XiCheng fic that expanded for 10 years of waiting coz of some intervention. I just love angsty elements in this and Xichen is well characterized in this fic! Strongly recommended!
Monotone by seredemia (WangXian and XiCheng)
Summary: Wei Wuxian died. Wei Wuxian died and he never came back, not after thirteen years, or a hundred, or a thousand. The year is 2019 and Lan Wangji is still here, having reached the highest point of cultivation that has gifted him with immortality. It's supposed to be a gift, an honour, yet to him it's nothing but a curse. Wei Wuxian is dead, and life is colourless. Lan Wangji ghosts through time, simply living each day in monotone. That is, until he meets a man who has the same face, same name, same smile as Wei Wuxian. Suddenly, there's colour and hope back in his life—but it's not long until he realises Wei Wuxian in this timeline has not escaped the sorrow that plagued his past self.Maybe history really does repeat itself after all.
THIS IS THE GREATEST. Immortal Xichen and Wangji in search of happiness. I certainly love the dynamics and interaction of XiCheng pair in here. Contains heavy angst, self-harm and hurt and you’d get a lot of emotional rollercoaster on this one! READ THIS GUYS, YOU WON’T REGRET IT! Unfortunately, the writer took down her work in A03 for personal reasons but she provided alternative links where you can read this. (Thank goodness for that.)
The Misadventures of Secretary Jiang by rollo (XiCheng mentions of WangXian)
Summary: When the competent Secretary Jiang gave his two weeks notice all of a sudden, CEO Lan XiChen is forced to switch up his long game.
Will Secretary Jiang ever notice that he’s not just the CEO’s Secretary?
This fic is hilarious as fuck. Full of humor and mishaps between XiCheng pair. Wanna see a different side of Xichen? Like the clingy, pouty ones - well this one is for you! I’ve just recently started the series called What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim and thank goodness, the author didn’t make Xichen as vain and narcissistic as the original character but all in all, if you want a light, honest to goodness fic, then I recommend this one for you!
I’ll Bind You To Me by yunkarin (XiCheng mentions of Married WangXian)
Summary: Jiang Cheng is the president of Yunmeng Cosmetics. Lan Xichen is the president of Gusu Pharmaceuticals. He and Lan Xichen have a complicated relationship, where they separate business and pleasure. How far are you willing to go to bind me to you?
A very sexy XiCheng fic with lots of sexy time. Insatiable Xichen is hot btw. If you want some kinks and smut filled read, well this one is for you!
The Form of Boneless Ice by TheWonderingHeart (XiCheng)
Summary: Mythical beasts have long ago been driven to extinction by the gentry — hunted for sport, but more importantly for their magical cores. Since then, there remains only one creature that has never been caught. The Jiang’s retreated a long time ago. Abandoning land altogether, they sought safety where the humans could not reach. It all comes to a head though, purely by chance. (Or is it by fate that a spontaneous decision allows for them to meet? If fate were a rock!) Jiang Cheng suddenly finds his whole life balanced on the head of a pin — on the flimsy promise of a human boy. In his opinion, things cannot possibly get worse!(But then they do when the Wens decide it’s finally time to search for the elusive merpeople, and suddenly nowhere is safe.)
Oh goodness, I love this one so much with innocent Jiang Cheng with the human world but still has a potty mouth lol. Mermaid AU wherein they met as children and continued their friendship until they turn into lovers. This is so sweet with angst, of course. Strongly-recommended!
My own fics (If you guys want lol shameless promotion)
Jin Ling’s Dating Guides for His Stupid Uncles (XiCheng/WangXian)
A work-in-progress wherein Jin Ling tries to matchmake his uncles to his best friend’s parents - the Lan brothers. However, danger is looming upon their family and they must solve it before it gets out of hand.
a way to his heart is through his stomach (XiCheng side WangXian)
A feisty cook joins the team by request. How far can he go without falling for the charm of the restaurant's assistant manager, Lan Xichen? And what’s this? They’re roommates too? Oh, fun.
Follow the journey of the gang as they go on with their lives as interns in the hospitality world for a year - the chaotic life of living
Another work-in-progress wherein the boys are in the hospitality industry.
I will add more works on this list as I go on reading. I better thank the quarantine that I can binge read yummy XiCheng fics. lol

❄️ Untamed Winter Fest 2019 ❄️
Day 21 - For You - 2.4k
More Xicheng, a continuation of my Day 2 and Day 4 verse.
The formatting of the conversations via text doesn’t work as well on tumblr as it did in .odt so apologies for it looking janky, bear with it!
11:19am
Jiang Cheng: You’re still coming over tonight, right? Nothing’s come up at work?
12:52pm
Lan Xichen: Sorry, sorry! I was caught up in a meeting.
I’ll definitely be there, I promise. Is seven alright?
Only you have to promise me that we’re going to be eating.
I won’t get time for lunch.
12:58pm
Jiang Cheng: That’s so bad for you, you should make sure you take time for lunch.
Yanli would lose her mind if I told her you skipped meals so often.
Seven is fine. And I suppose I can feed you.
13:12pm
Lan Xichen: You have to, its bad for me to miss a meal right?
Don’t you dare be such a little snitch.
Shall I bring anything? I’m going to another meeting now but I’ll pick your message up afterwards.
13:21pm
Jiang Cheng: No need.
***
Jiang Cheng was nervous and that made him unable to settle to anything that afternoon. Everything was prepared, it should be perfect. But that knowledge didn’t help much.
He’d spent a lot of the last week with his sister Jiang Yanli while she taught him patiently how to prepare some of Lan Xichen’s favourite dishes, and she had needed patience; he was neither a natural cook nor a good student. They’d kept the plan to just a few of the easiest dishes, no point being too ambitious.
She’d made him a detailed shopping list for ingredients, which he’d followed diligently at the market.
She’d written him carefully timed directions so that everything should be ready at the same time.
All he needed now was to execute the plan.
***
Once he started cooking at least it was something to take his mind off of how nauseous his anxiety had begun to make him feel; he really had to pay careful attention and put all his focus into following Yanli’s precisely written out instructions. He only had to call her to check on something twice, and she rang off wishing him good luck both times.
He didn’t know whether he’d need it or not.
Logically he thought probably not. But he wouldn’t let that stop him worrying, because what if he was wrong.
His phone announced a text from Xichen some time after six saying he was leaving the office, which would have him arrive at about seven as agreed, and it kicked Jiang Cheng up into high gear as he hurried around putting the finishing touches to the food, to the table setting and the lighting, (yes, love had apparently turned him into a pathetic cliché).
He went to change out of his old jeans and sauce stained t-shirt; he hadn’t dared take the risk of cooking in anything else, and rightly so, his t-shirt looked like he’d lost in a food fight.
He’d actually spent a little time thinking about his wardrobe that morning, which he never normally did. He’d decided on black tailored pants, a purple shirt and a black cashmere v-neck sweater because yes he did know Xichen had a thing for him in soft sweaters, thank you very much.
Once dressed he went to make a final check on everything just as the door buzzer went. He wished Xichen would just use the key he’d given him; but Xichen wouldn’t use it when he knew Jiang Cheng was in, thinking it rude.
He was folded up into a tight hug as soon as the door shut behind Xichen, before being kissed until his head spun.
He wasn’t really able to keep track of what happened but he came back to his senses some minutes later pinned up against the door with his legs around Xichen’s waist and the other’s mouth on his throat.
“Wait!” he gasped as the fog cleared, his fingers flexing against Xichen’s shoulders, “The food”
“It can wait?” Xichen coaxed against his skin, but pulled back as Jiang Cheng kept pushing at him weakly.
“I cooked” he almost sounded petulant, but at the revelation Xichen suddenly dropped him; he only just managed to keep his feet.
“You cooked? For me?” Xichen asked with what sounded like utter glee in his voice.
“Yes, but now I’m wondering why. Did you really have to just drop me like that you asshole?” he complained, but Xichen just took his hand and pulled him towards the kitchen.
“I’m sorry. I was just so happy you cooked for me”
In the face of that kind of excitement how could Jiang Cheng stay mad at him?
“You haven’t tasted it, don’t be happy just yet” he muttered to hide his embarrassment, but Lan Xichen refused to let Jiang Cheng dampen his enthusiasm.
It wasn’t great. But it turned out better than Jiang Cheng hoped so that was something; that didn’t stop Xichen acting like they were at a five star restaurant though.
The man was great for his self-confidence, or he would be if Jiang Cheng’s self-confidence worked like that. It didn’t.
***
Honestly Jiang Cheng had never seen himself as the cuddling type, which was odd, because these days he really did live for these quiet evenings with Lan Xichen. They sat spooned together on the couch, his back to Xichen’s chest, drinking wine and talking about absolutely nothing of consequence.
Which he enjoyed greatly, but he also had some things of very great consequence to say tonight, he just needed to work up the nerve.
He didn’t want to move and spoil the mood just at that moment though, enjoying the warmth and comfort of being held like he was something worth cherishing.
They’d finished the wine in their glasses and Jiang Cheng was just working his way up to moving and starting the awkward conversation when Lan Xichen rubbed a hand down his arm.
“I almost forgot in the pleasure of being wined and dined by my wonderful boyfriend, but I brought you a Christmas present”
Jiang Cheng blinked at the unexpectedness of his comment. Although it made sense, Lan Wangji, his brother’s husband, would likely have warned him their family had a tradition of couples exchanging a gift on the Western holiday of Christmas Day.
“I have a gift for you too” he admitted, and pushed himself up from the couch to go and fetch it.
His pulse picked up; he was extremely nervous now as he brought the wrapped package in from the bedroom.
“Merry Christmas” Lan Xichen said as they exchanged parcels.
The one Xichen handed him was a small, square shaped gift. He undid the wrapping paper to find a bespoke jewellers box, and on the velvet inside the box lay two small earrings made from free-form cut amethyst shaped like lightning bolts. Purple Lightning.
“These are exquisite” he said breathlessly, all nervousness suddenly forgotten.
“I had one earring and one lapel pin made. I thought we’d always match then”
“You’re so sappy” Jiang Cheng said wrapping an arm around Xichen’s neck and pressing a kiss of thanks against his lips. “I love it though. And I don’t hate the idea of having matching pieces” he felt his neck heat up at the grudgingly given admission. “Thank you”
He noticed his own hands were starting to shake as Xichen turned his attention to Jiang Cheng’s gift now.
Was it going to seem rubbish compared to Xichen’s carefully thought out one?
Although that wasn’t fair, Jiang Cheng had put a lot of thought into his and in honesty it was a gift that bared him emotionally more than he’d ever thought he’d be comfortable with in front of another person. Actually no, he wasn’t comfortable with it, he just knew he needed to do it for their relationship.
There was nothing to be done about changing it now anyway, unless he snatched the package back and ran like a lunatic.
He wondered if at this point Xichen would even be surprised at him if he did.
But it was too late anyway, the gift was open.
The first item was an amethyst cashmere scarf which he’d had embroidered with Xichen’s name. As Jiang Cheng wore a lot of purples Xichen had been wearing more and more clothing in the same colours so it had seemed like a good idea, married with the other’s obsession with his soft wool sweaters.
Xichen exclaimed over it in happiness, but then realised there was something wrapped up in the scarf. He carefully unfolded it.
And stared.
Anxious to begin with Xichen’s silence only made Jiang Cheng’s nerves wind tighter, was it a flop? Did he understand the implications? Did he just not care?
He was a hair’s breadth away from reaching over and snatching the picture frame away when Xichen looked up at him finally. Jiang Cheng felt like he’d been punched in the gut as he noted the soft sheen of tears in Lan Xichen’s eyes.
“I thought you could put it on your desk at work. If you wanted to” Jiang Cheng could barely make his voice louder than a whisper. He was pulled in to a hug so tight he felt like his ribs might crack.
“I’ll put it there tomorrow” Xichen promised, kissing his temple then burying his face into Jiang Cheng’s hair.
“I wanted you to know. Properly. I wanted to say it. I love you” it was actually easier admitting it wrapped in Xichen’s arms, because he didn’t have to look him in the face which was freeing. He still felt how hot his face must be but he didn’t care this time though. He had needed to say it. The photograph had been a prompt to help him, to push him into verbalising it.
Yanli had taken the photograph the previous weekend during their afternoon of making decorations, they were in front of the Christmas tree side by side, an arm thrown around the other’s waist, and Xichen must have said something to Jiang Cheng a moment before she’d pressed the button, as Xichen looked towards the camera but Jiang Cheng looked across at Xichen, and there was absolutely no disguising the look of utter love on his face. Jiang Cheng hadn’t even been aware his face could look like that.
“I love you too. And I love your gifts. I’ve never been given anything as wonderful before. Thank you for everything”
“Is the scarf alright?” wanting to diffuse the honesty and emotion charged atmosphere because he was at his limit Jiang Cheng changed the topic as he pulled out of Xichen’s arms.
Lan Xichen was obviously feeling magnanimous in his fortune and allowed him to.
“It’s beautiful, as you know purple is becoming my favourite colour” Lan Xichen told him with a grin.
“I noticed, every time you go digging through my wardrobe” he groused.
“I have to wear your clothes when I don’t have any of my own here...”
“How convenient for you that you don’t have your own here, so you can wear my clothes...”
“Everything sounds devious when you say it with that tone” Xichen spread his hands in fake helplessness.
“It won’t matter when we move-” Jiang Cheng froze, realising that was the one bit he hadn’t had the courage to ask yet. And honestly he was at his limit tonight, asking Xichen to live together would have to be another time’s ask. “-this to the bedroom, you won’t need clothes” his shoulder’s tensed at the stupid cover up, and honestly propositioning your boyfriend in such a flagrantly embarrassing way was just as bad as asking him to move in, surely?
He had to roll with it now though.
“As my love commands”
“Why are you so fucking shameless?” Jiang Cheng demanded helplessly as he was pulled by the hand towards the bedroom.
“Shameless? I? Wanyin, you were the one who propositioned me. I genuinely don’t know how your face is thick enough. I’m here all a-blush at the thought”
“Will you please just shut the fuck up?” Jiang Cheng wailed before Xichen kissed him tenderly on the lips.
***
Lan Xichen laid awake for quite a while after Jiang Wanyin had fallen asleep curled into his side with his head on Xichen’s chest.
He stroked Wanyin’s soft dark hair lazily and thought back with satisfaction and pride at how Jiang Wanyin had put himself out of his comfort zone to be honest with him and admit his feelings.
He was fully aware how uncomfortable it would have been for Jiang Wanyin to admit it, which was why he was so deliriously happy he had.
He was sure too that Wanyin’s little slip up earlier had been about moving in together. Which offered him a new level of satisfaction.
He himself had thought they were ready to start having that conversation so the fact Wanyin was thinking about it too made him even happier. He’d obviously not been able to ask in the end, probably due to being overtaxed on the difficult emotional discussions already.
But that was fine, now Lan Xichen knew they were on the same page and Wanyin wouldn't feel rushed into the discussion he was perfectly happy to take the initiative and do the asking himself. And he had the perfect idea.
***
Jiang Cheng was unusually the first to wake the next morning. He glanced over to find Xichen still out like a light, a starkly beautiful chiaroscuro of ink dark hair against the severity of white bed sheets, snowy skin and sharp angles cast in shadows in the early morning light.
The man he loved. And who now knew it.
He stretched languidly, all heavy limbs and pleasant aches caused by more than pleasant activities the previous evening.
He was just working himself up to shower when he saw the front of his phone light up on the bedside cabinet, he rolled over to claim it and read the text from his sister.
***
6:16am
Jiang Yanli: How did it go?
6:16am
Jiang Cheng: OK? The dinner wasn’t inedible. He was pleased.
6:16am
Jiang Yanli: See, I said he would be, no matter what.
Did you tell him?
6:17am
Jiang Cheng: Yes. I wanted to die though.
Does that mean I don’t have to say it ever again now?
6:17am
Jiang Yanli: A-Cheng that isn’t how feelings or relationships work!!
6:18am
Jiang Cheng: I know, I was just joking. Give me credit for some emotional intelligence Jiejie.
I didn’t manage to ask him about living together yet.
I got overwhelmed and shied out. I will next time though.

Note
I'm fairly ambivalent on xicheng. I see it as mostly a fix-it ship with a lot of free real estate that people like to fill with fluff and the usual tsundere/gentle dynamic. But considering Xicheng seriously, both JC and LXC both lose someone (WWX and JGY) over the course of the story, are both attractive, canonically single, fandom-popular characters, and have the added bonus of being a parallel to wangxian since they're both brothers to wwx and lwj respectively. They barely interact in canon,
Tumblr media
I might as well just point out everything about xicheng that rubs me the wrong way for any sort of inane reason. Long post with negativity incoming.
1. I acknowledge the validity of xicheng in light of them both having similarly unhappy endings, but I’m still surprised there aren’t more “Everything is OK AU” or fix-its with xiyao, and I’ve already mentioned once or twice that I’m surprised that chengxian isn’t that popular, but I get that most people aren’t willing to break up the CP for the latter. But yeah, fluff and hurt/comfort? Please consider Xiyao or chengxian.
2. More importantly, “added bonus of being a parallel to wangxian since they’re both brothers” is something I understand conceptually, but disagree with. This point has been the biggest turn off since day one. It’s unrealistic and weird and makes me very uncomfortable. My grandmother’s sister and my grandfather’s brother are also married to each other, do you know why? Because the marriages were both arranged and no parties had any say in it. On a meta level xicheng is totally an arranged marriage for the sake of parallels, and I’m. I don’t like this. This is always the one thing I refuse to get over.
And ah yes, I’ve seen that fic around too. I think I even read a bit of it, though if I have I’ve forgotten everything about it. in general it screams not for me. hsdfhjkl I really should give it a genuine chance, but I’m afraid it’s just going to get me more upset. Look upon this generic theoretical passage that I have constructed off my knowledge of xicheng:
“Lan Huan!” Jiang Cheng protested, blushing despite his harsh tone. “Let me go!”
“A-Cheng,” Lan Xichen said gently while smiling, “I think you look very lovely today.” His hold on Jiang Cheng’s waist was firm and resistant to his lover’s protests.
Jiang Cheng turned an ever darker red as he muttered, “Shut up… you look fine, too.”
Now look upon this generic theoretical passage that I have constructed off my knowledge of zhuiling:
“Lan Yuan!” Jin Ling protested, blushing despite his harsh tone. “Let me go!”
“A-Ling,” Lan Sizhui said gently while smiling, “I think you look very lovely today.” His hold on Jin Ling’s waist was firm and resistant to his lover’s protests.
Jin Ling turned an ever darker red as he muttered, “Shut up… you look fine, too.”
Both these ships in one fic, plus wangxian being the “nauseating couple” in the background as suggested in the tags… holy shit, I honestly think I’m going to explode.
Writing this out, I think perhaps one of the other problems I have with it is just the type of the happy ever after it suggests.
I don’t mean as in resolving LXC and JC’s bad endings, because I support that. I mean as in “WWX and JC are brothers once more, and they all live happily ever after together.” Which I guess is what fandom wants. I’ve heard people say they don’t think their reconciliation it’s realistic, or people saying it’s possible postcanon, but I feel like I’m the only person out there that hopes, whether or not it’s realistic, that it never happens, period.
Obviously super hypocritical of me to say while I write fix-it JC/LWJ/WWX, but I still think it’s better if JC and WWX are never friends again. Resolve their endings, go ahead. But resolution with LXC doesn’t necessarily mean that he has to get together or be friends with JGY in some universe where he survives, and resolving JC’s emotional plotline shouldn’t mean he has to be friends with WWX again. Let them move on to different people. Let them make different friends. You don’t have to mend old, important relationships, and frankly, I don’t think WWX or JC want to.
Anyway in other words, one time I saw a fic where WWX and JC bicker over who has the better husband while said husbands dote on them lovingly and that’s the sort of “everything hurts” that I’m pretty sure is the exact opposite of what was supposed to happen. I am very thankful that xicheng isn’t canon and I really wish I could like it or at least think of it as fun like you do anon, because then I would be able to enjoy twice as many things as I do now.

Fiction Recommendation 16
It’s a new year, so let’s start it off with a round of fiction recommendation! I’ll focus on a pairing that I’ve recently found much attraction to: Lan XiChen x Jiang Cheng from Modaozushi.
Disclaimer: As with previous recommendations, the fictions are recommended based on my personal liking and not listed in any particular order other than when I read them. I also apologize for crude summaries...I just want to spread the XiCheng love >w<
Without further ado, please find the recommendations below:

AU
1. 隐琳琅 by  别开枪我真的是个小号
ABO-verse in the original setting (semi-canon?) - All through his life Jiang Cheng has kept his second ‘gender’ as a secret, knowing that the prospect of an omega as a sect leader would threaten Lotus Pier’s standing in the cultivation world. Yet no matter how hard he tried to keep things under wrap, there are those out there who seeks to expose him, and possibly, make him their mate.
*Warning for R18 and some dubious content; original character involved. The follow-up story is still in progress and can be found here --> 鹊梭织
The author’s more recent work involving supernatural in a modern AU setting is also quite interesting thus far, you can find the link here --> 邻居
2.  蚀骨之夜 by  别鹊惊枝
Mysterious bombs and bloody gifts all point towards a planned revenge. But who is the target? Jiang Cheng, or Lan XiChen? Police x CEO AU

Lan XiChen happens to be around the area when Jiang Cheng went into heat, and as father to the twins, he would go the extra mile to win Jiang Cheng’s heart.
Semi-canon, ABO-verse (**contains mpreg/children)

Jiang Cheng's ongoing tug-of-war with the fates lands him right with Lan Xichen.  One-shot fluff.
9. 佳偶天成 by  研夜
The role of a prince includes disguising as a commoner to experience their hardships. Lan Xichen was touring through Yunmeng when he was ‘kidnapped’ by bandits and mistaken for an omega. One-shot; ABO-verse
10. 瞧瞧,别人家的奉旨成婚! by  我要改名我叫中号哥哥

I’m also currently following the writer’s other fic: 真爱的味道是玫瑰桃子. Short summary: Lan XiChen is an alpha who is allergic to omegas’ pheromones, and Jiang Cheng is an omega who can’t smell alphas’ pheromones. The former was overjoyed when he found out that he was not allergic to the latter. However, being the police that he is, Jiang Cheng suspects that Lan XiChen is involved in recent murder cases. ABO-verse.
