Old School X is a project interviewing X-Files fanfic authors who were posting fic during the original run of the show. New interviews are posted every Tuesday.
Interview with Tabula Rasa
Tabula Rasa has 8 stories at Gossamer, but there are even more X-Files fics at AO3 and her website. She writes Mulder and Scully in a very lovely way. I've recced 3 of my favorites of her fics here before: Bird in Snow, Fall: East on M St, and Skuamorph. Big thanks to Tabula Rasa for doing this interview.
Does it surprise you that people are still interested in reading your X-Files fanfics and others that were posted during the original run of the show (1993-2002)?
I'm always extremely pleasantly surprised to get kudos (or, very rarely, a comment) on my old fic, but I'm always happy to see it! I did post them all (I think) to AO3. I'm not surprised people are still reading fic, though. It's an iconic show and now with streaming, it's really easy to watch older shows and natural to want fic about them!
What do you think of when you think about your X-Files fandom experience? What did you take away from it?
XF was my first fandom, definitely my first online fandom, and so it will always have a special place in my heart. Also... I had a great time! I stumbled upon and joined the Scullyfic email list by accident, but it was the best thing I could have done. I learned a lot about how to be a writer and how to be in fandom, and those lessons are still important to me. Foundational. Also, in terms of modern fandom drama, XF was more low-key on the drama (although it didn't seem like it at the time!). But I learned something that's always served me well: find like-minded people, and hang out with them. Don't worry about the rest.
Also... you can't control the show, but you kind of can control the canon.
Because of Scully, I ended up taking a forensic anthropology class in university-- and now I have a Master's in a forensic science! Part of the Scully Effect, and proud of it!
Social media didn't really exist during the show's original run. How were you most involved with the X-Files online (atxc, message board, email mailing list, etc.)?
Definitely mostly email list! I never really got the hang of message boards. Posting fic was exhausting, and tbh I never figured out how to work Ephemeral. I checked it every day, though! I loved, after a new episode, everyone sending in their thoughts and reading everyone's experiences together. Fandom was a lot more work back then, tbh!
What did you take away from your experience with X-Files fic or with the fandom in general?
That fic can be just as good, or better, than traditionally published works. There are works of XF fic that have stuck with me for years now, far more than some books I've read. That fan writers can know the characters better than the show writers. The fandom in general was really smart, and mostly more adult than me (I joined fandom when I went away to college, so I always felt at the younger end of the scale. That was good though!).
Also, my first time reading and writing porn. Not gonna lie, I was shocked the first time I accidentally read smut. But I adjusted fast. lol
What was it that got you hooked on the X-Files as a show?
I was still a kid (now we would say preteen) when the show premiered- I think in middle school. But I was already into ghosts, aliens, monsters, solving mysteries, and I'd already imprinted on the dynamic thanks to Square One (really)! I was also just old enough to start developing celebrity crushes. Hilariously, I did not twig to the fact that I'm bisexual the entire time I was in XF fandom, despite having enormous crushes on BOTH Mulder and Scully. Ahhhh!
Also, my whole family was into the show, but I was definitely the one with the hyperfixation. I used to take notes and record the episodes as I watched. It just had the right stuff and hit at the right time. And I've always been obsessive.
What got you involved with X-Files fanfic?
As a kid I also really liked Star Trek, and someone had given my dad a book about the history of Star Trek, which I read. This included mentions of fandom and fanfic. As soon as I had a private-- and perhaps more importantly fast-- internet connection (in college), I went looking for XF fanfic, and that was that. Hooked immediately. Also I shipped them A LOT so that's what I went looking for.
What is your relationship like now to X-Files fandom?
I tend to not go back to a fandom once I have a new fandom, so I wouldn't say I'm in it. I did hang around the edges for the revival, of course, because I wanted to experience that with the same people, but since the revival was mostly not that great (with a few exceptions), I didn't get pulled back into it. But I still think of the people I knew in the fandom a lot, and always hope they're doing well.
Were you involved with any fandoms after the X-Files? If so, what was it like compared to X-Files?
I've never left fandom, and I've been in a BUNCH: Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Bandom, Supernatural, now CQL/The Untamed and other Chinese-media fandoms, with many smaller ones in between or on the side. I feel like at their core fandoms tend to be similar, although where you host the fandom makes a big difference: Livejournal, tumblr, twitter. I think that because fandoms now tend to be bigger and more diverse (which is good) there tends to be more wank (which is bad). In some of them I was close to a group of people, some of them not. Honestly the best thing is when someone you know from an old fandom is in your new fandom. It's so much fun. I have really good friends thanks to fandom, and I've had them for YEARS. Like. 15 years.
Who are some of your favorite fictional characters? Why?
I tend to focus more on ships than characters, but some of my all-time favs: Scully, Hermione, Sirius Black, Castiel, Lan Wangji, Xie Lian. That's just fandom-oriented ones, otherwise we'd be here all day. :D
Do you ever still watch The X-Files or think about Mulder and Scully?
I don't often rewatch episodes any more, although if I come across an ep on tv I might. I definitely still think about them though! For example, I'm a teacher now, and just a couple weeks ago one of my colleagues mentioned he'd heard the students saying they shipped two of their classmates, and he was like "Ship? I don't get it" and I was like "HOO BOY, do I have a story for you!" And I explained how shipping came from XF fandom, and why. That was fun. I definitely still think about Mulder and Scully too-- I mean, they're cultural touchstones, so they do come up sometimes in greater pop culture. Also, I was in Hannibal fandom for a while, and Gillian Anderson is still The Best.
Do you ever still read X-Files fic? Fic in another fandom?
I haven't read XF fic in years, even the ones I remember as being really significant/important to me. I still have my all-time favs saved on an external HD though! Fic in another fandom- every day lol.
Do you have any favorite X-Files fanfic stories or authors?
Blinded by White Light by DashaK has stuck with me. Mr. and Mrs. Smith and the Ruby-Throated Warbler by I forget I'm so sorry -- that's lasted as my ideal post-canon MSR and as an interesting and different way to tell a story.  [Lilydale note: It’s by rah.] I was always thrilled to see fic by Brandon, JET, MaybeAmanda, Syntax6... and, frankly, everyone on the Scullyfic/ Emuse list. So many talented people in that fandom!
What is your favorite of your own fics, X-Files and/or otherwise?
Things Outside, which is the only thing I've ever written based on a dream, and I'm really satisfied with it. It was hard to write but so much fun to revel in the weirdness. I always kind of wanted to write more because I know a lot more about the situation, but otoh, I like the open, ambiguous ending (usually I am very HEA).
In other fandoms, King & Country in bandom (MCR) and in Supernatural I'm very proud of Hope and Clay. I struggle to write casefics even though I love to read them, but that one really worked out.
Do you think you'll ever write another X-Files story? Or dust off and post an oldie that for whatever reason never made it online?
I don't think I'll ever write something new. There is an old fic that may be done but it was smut so I was too shy to post it at the time. In theory if I find it and it's decent, I could post it!
Do you still write fic now? Or other creative work?
I do! I write fic very slowly, but I do write still! I have a million ideas for stories, but I'm so slow at the actual writing part.
Where do you get ideas for stories?
I usually take a jumping-off point from canon, or of course, something I need to fix or expand on. Or sometimes I start telling myself a story as I fall asleep and the idea grabs me long enough I can manage to write it.
What's the story behind your pen name?
I was getting into fandom and realized people didn't use their real names. I flipped through my history book looking for inspiration, and decided tabula rasa was a great name for a writer. I tend to add an X because it's rare to get "tabularasa" as a username, and the X is indeed for X-Files (so I'm something like tabulaxrasa most places). I usually go by Tabula Rasa or Tab, though. And I still use it because 1) it IS a great name for a writer; and 2) it's not fandom-specific so I can keep it in every fandom.
I identify with it so much I have answered to this name in class (oops). I have a "Tab" t-shirt (as in the soda, but I have worn it to Comic-Con for ease of ID-- better than a nametag!). And my mom got me a necklace with a "tab" typewriter key as a charm, which I adore. Yes, I have accidental merch of myself.
Do your friends and family know about your fic and, if so, what have been their reactions?
As you can tell from the above, my family knows (my family being my parents and sister). They are supportive! I think my mom read a couple stories? But obviously she has to know the fandom to get it... I got my sister into fic, and we even wrote a couple fics together (in Gundam Wing). She's a lot more selective about fandoms, but she's joined fandoms on her own, too. She's just not in one constantly, like me. :p
I tend not to tell not-online friends unless I have felt them out and know they're super fannish, or they bring it up first.
Is there a place online (tumblr, twitter, AO3, etc.) where people can find you and/or your stories now?
Most of my old fic is now on AO3 and I hang out on twitter a lot, @tabula_x_rasa
Is there anything else you'd like to share with fans of X-Files fic?
I'm really glad people are still in this fandom! It will always be so important to me. Thank you Lilydale, for this nostalgia trip!

Another bust, Y/N had been working on this case for the past two months, a string of burnt corpses popping up all over the city, it was hard to I.D the bodies but they were apparently some low rate criminals that seemed to piss off the wrong person, this man was named Dabi, his distinctive feature was the burnt skin covering his body, but there was not much else about him that she could find.
But Dabi definitely found out about her, chatter could be heard from a few low rate villains who was starting to chase after him. When he saw Y/N for the first it it was like hos heart was set a flame not because he was in love, no... far from it. He thought;
'This is the one that I'm going to absolutely ruin~'
-
Usually Y/N would have said no, as usual, to any drinks or a night out but her boss happened to tell her to take a break and with a direct order like that she couldn't say no. Her friends were immediately excited to see her rock up in that tight black dress she loved to wear when she went out, the way it hugged her curves and showed off just the right amount of cleavage was pleasing to anyone that looked, of course she wasn't wearing a bra and anyone who would feel her up that night would know.
The black heels making her slightly taller than usual, her hair loose, framing her face. Her lips painted with a pretty black lipstick and somewhat of a smokey eye done giving her that real seductive look.
Y/N had no clue that the man she had been hunting was in this bar and he knew that she was hunting him, of course everyone was, but he had grown infatuated with her specifically. The way her body moved with her friends or the way she laughed with those flushed cheeks had the man eager to see... to feel more of her. He knew when she were about five shots in and a glass of gin and tonic she would be wonky and her perception of who or what was around wouldn't matter.
So that's when he made his move, after all she stood alone ordering what looked to be like another gin, when she wasn't looking a distraction which came from one of her friends he managed to slip something into her drink. A harmless little drug.
Five minutes in she was back on the dance floor having chugged down her gin and almost bouncing off the walls from how good her body felt. Dabi wasted no time in moving in, his eyes watching her now, Y/N noticed him now, not taking in his appearance under the low colourful lights. He moved in closer when he saw that cute little finger beckoning him to come closer to her and he did, he got in close, pulling her back up against him.
She didn't mind, no in fact she grinded her ass against him, her fingers tangled up in his hair as his hands trailed along her curves, giving a few gropes to her ass and breasts. He could hear those cute little moans fall from those pretty little lips grinding her ass more against his slowly hardening cock. He tilted her head slightly, capturing her lips against his, a pierced tongue slyly running along her bottom lip making her part her lips allowing him access to her mouth.
She couldn't help but moan in delight from the way the metal felt against her tongue. Soon he broke away from the kiss, his fingers dancing along the hem of her dress, a deep voice rumbling against her ear making her giddy. "You wanna fuck doll?~" the way his tongue tan over the edge of her ear made her almost moan again but she gave him an eager nod, her body felt far too hot to say no and honestly she felt like this man would give her the pleasure she desired.
With a small smirk against her skin he took her hand and led her to a back room, away from prying eyes. Seems as though her colleagues hadn't even noticed. When the door shut his hand immediately moved around her throat slamming her against the, a small smirk on his lips. He couldn't believe it, the hero that had been chasing him for the past two months was practically moaning for him to fuck her. "Look at you... you look so slutty, like a bitch in heat~" he teased as his free hand pulled down her dress, exposing those pretty breasts, a thumb trailing over the hardening nub.
His hand then dipped between her juicy thighs, running over her, panties, no... a g-string. "What a slutty bitch... and you're so fucking wet too~" he breathed against her ear, earning a quiet moan from her. "D-don't tease me...~" she whimpered as her hand kept his hand between her thighs, he didn't hesitate for a second as he dipped his finger between those slick folds earning an almost desperate moan from her. "Do you want me to fuck you doll face?~" his lips were still pressed against her ear, his hand tightening slightly around her throat, the other wiggling inside her sloppy wet hole.
"Gods yes... please... please fuck me~" she moaned as her fingers dug into his coat. His lips captured hers again before he shifted them again, he pulled his hands away from her body for a moment before he bent her over a nearby table, the room that they happened to be inside seemed to be an office of sorts? Who honestly knew, all that Y/N was thinking about was being plowed until she couldn't think straight.
'If this is how she acts on a simple aphrodisiac what will she act like on a stronger drug...?' He thought as his hand landed a firm smack on her exposed rear making the female yelp her hands gripping the table. "I hope you're on birth control dollface~" he hummed burning off the g-string. "There's no need for this~" he added on, the sound of his zipper being pulled down and that light smack against her ass had the hero whimper almost.
She didn't even need to look back to tell he was rather well endowed, but what really surprised her was the slight bumps she could feel, his hand wrapped around his shaft slowly gliding his tip to rub against, the groan that fell from his lips was drowned out by the moan that fell from her lips as he slid himself inside her, stretching out her walls making her moan in delight, the feeling of his piercings rubbing against her walls made her legs tense up and her back arch slightly.
"F-fuck~♡ you're so big~"
"And this pretty little pussy of yours is taking my cock so well~" he grunted, his hands gripping her hips before thrusting deep inside her, his tip pressing against her cervix making her moan. "Shit...~♡ you're gonna make me cum already~" she whined out. "You better hold it~" he grunted, his hand moving from her hip to her hair, gripping it as his hips started moving, the pace wasn't slow at all, it was rough, the sound of skin smacking against skin filled the room along with grunts and moans from the two of them.
"Oh gods... you're gonna make me cum... your cock is touching all the right spots~ I can't hold it" she whined, he leaned in keeping her head tilted so he could attack her neck as his hips didn't stop, even as her walls slowly tighten around his cock.
"Oi oi oi, you better not cum doll, I'll stop if you cum~" he breathed against her ear as his hand now wrapped around her throat making her gasp out, legs were shaking. "P-please let me cum... I want to cum..~" she managed to breath out, she was so close, she could feel herself slowly reaching that high as much as she tried to stop herself, but oh... she definitely couldn't hold back anymore, her love juices dripped all over his pierced cock, making him grunt slightly from how tight she had gotten, but his thrusting hadn't stopped no, in fact he picked up the pace.
His hips snapping back and forth into her sensitive cunt with his hand tightening around her throat. "W-wait... you're being to rough, if you... ah!"
SMACK!
A bright red hand print was left on her ass, the skin swelling up slightly from the harsh impact of his hand, tears building up from the harsh spank.
"Little sluts who don't listen shouldn't be treated nice, you can't even listen to simple orders I'll have to teach ya a lesson doll face~" he cooed into her ear, his hand easing over the swelling skin, making her wince slightly, his tongue running over the shell of her ear. His hips were pressed up against hers now, not moving at all.
"Now that you've cum don't you think you should make me cum? Hmm~? I think you should let me fuck that pretty little throat until its bruised..." he whispered into her ear, her hips grinded slightly back getting some form of friction from his cock still buried deep inside her. "Huh? Or should I fuck you here...?" His hand trailed over her ass spreading her asscheek slightly before slowly dipping his thumb into her puckered hole squeezing her throat a little tighter making her gasp out.
For him however it almost felt like her pussy walls tightened around his cock. "Oh? Well would ya' look at that doll face~ I just squeezed your throat slightly and your pussy tightened up so much~ or was it my thumb rubbing against your pretty little ass hole?~" he hummed it felt like his thumb heated up against your puckered hole making you gasp out, your back arching. "Are you a horny little masochist? Do you like being choked out and fucked? Nod if that's what ya' like~" he teased and she nodded almost eagerly, her make up seemed to be running down her face from the tears that spilt, but she didn't care...
"What a stupid little masochist..." he murmured.
His hand loosened around her throat before he pulled his cock out of her pussy, it looked like it was twitching but his focus was now on that puckered hole. Dabi let his cock sit between those sweet asscheeks, lubing it up with her pussy juices before he shifted his shaft, pressing the tip against the puckered hole. "W-wait... not so-..." he didn't slid himself into her tight little ass, inside he pulled her up and shoved her onto her knees.
"I'm gonna save it for when you really piss me off~" he hummed as his hand stroked her cheek softly making her look up at him.
"But that doesn't mean that you're let off the hook dollface~ I'm gonna mess up that pretty black lipstick all over that pretty little face of yours~" he hummed trailing a thumb over her bottom lip, forcing her to part her lips, his eyes watching her expression as she ran her tongue over his tip which earned a quiet grunt from him. "Open that pretty mouth doll..." he mumbled as his hand trailed through her hair before giving it a firm grip, her lips immediately parted for him, he wasted no time in sliding himself into her mouth, groaning at how her tongue immediately rubbed against his shaft as it slid into her mouth, he stopped for a moment to let her get use to his size, but slowly pulled back, grinning slightly at the sight of her lipstick already staining his cock, but
"Don't forget to breath."
Was all he said as his hips snapped forward, burying his cock down her throat, making her gag slightly, his grip being firm on her hair made it easier for him to start thrusting, heavy balls smacking against her chin, faint lipstick marks covering his balls and cocks when he pulled back. Cerulean hues watching her eyes tear up and the drool starting to drip from the corners of her lips down onto her breasts or on her thighs. He felt the way her throat tightened and the way her nails dug into the back of his thighs, it made him pick up the pace.
His thrusts were slowly becoming a bit more erratic, with a few more harsh thrusts she could feel him throbbing in her throat, with one last harsh thrust, he buried his cock deep down her throat, his that warm salty essence spurting down her pretty little throat.
Her hands were tapping at his thighs as an indication that she couldn't breath, she almost passed out but he pulled back, his cock falling from her lips as he examined her face.
Mascara running down her skin and her lipstick smudged with strings of salvia connecting from her lips to his cock.
He loosened his hold on her hair, threading his fingers through the slightly matted locks. "I can't wait to use you more... do you want that doll face?" His words were soft as his fingers played with her hair as some means of 'aftercare'
She gave a slow nod, she looked like a dog waiting for it's master to give an order...
And gods it would be so wrong for the villain not to use that to his hearts content.
"Good, cause this is far from over my cute little hero~" he taunted and Y/N let the words fly over her head, it wouldn't be until the next morning that she would find her hands cuffed to the bed, her pussy feeling oddly full and her legs feeling sore along with her throat, yet she felt she was on a soft bed...
How smashed did she get...?
"Oh, you're awake~" that slightly familiar voice teased out, she looked up towards the source, there was standing with his hands shoved into his pockets a smug smile on his face, the scars on his face confused her for a moment before everything clicked in place.
"Dabi..." she whispered.
"Oh you figured it out hero~ how adorable~" he cooed clapping his hands together. "I can't let you go." He said as he moved closer, "shame you can't use your quirk would of been more fun if you fought, but it was more entertaining to watch a hero fall in a pool of ecstasy last night. It was fuckin' cute the way you be-..." "Shut up." She blushed, looking away from him, but feeling of him gripping her face made her whimper and look up at him.
"I think it would be more fun to fuck you while you're sober, you'll break so easy because of how weak you are~" He hummed a thumb trailing over her bottom lip.
"Oh I can't wait to fuck you into submission~" the way he had said it had her body throb in... delight? No... it had to be disgust delight

Chapter 21.) Shadow Of The Crown.
(This is from My King’s POV)
Here I sit with a drink in my hand while staring at the documents on my desk. One is the hotel blueprints I showed Tariq and the other is the Royal decree of debt collection for Lord Winslow. All both needed was my signature and a few lives would be turned upside down. But could I really do it? Could I be that heartless? Short answer: yes! Long answer: hell yes!
They deserve it after all. They’re coming after me and what is rightfully mine. They’re coming for My Queen. And they would have succeeded had that idiot not sent handwritten messages to me and Shanelle. I have always been afraid of becoming somewhat of a dictator like my father and my grandfather before him. But, now I understand why they ruled the way they did. Their enemies stopped at nothing. And clearly mine aren’t either.
Sure, their challenge for the crown and throne doesn’t bother me. But what does bother me, is them thinking that they’re going to undermine or intimidate My Queen. I can’t have that. I have to protect and shield her from them. That’s my job as her fiancé and her future King. I serve her before I serve my people.
They pushed me to this point. I don’t want to be this way. But if I’m gonna be honest, I actually like being selfish. Making them fear The Crown and it’s unbridled power is quite satisfying. I now understand why my father enjoyed it so much. He loved when nations feared him as much as they respected him. He always said it helped to know who was weak and who wasn’t. Just like now.
And sure, the court won’t like my decisions should I decide to make them, but then again that damn court doesn’t like anything that specifically makes them look bad. As long as I fall in line with what they want, they’re happy. My happiness and sanity be damned. Which is why I fight so hard for Shanelle. I want them to see her as the queen that she will be for all of Cordonia. But their stubborn determination will never let that happen. They’d much rather I be with someone like Duchess Kaitlyn or better yet, they’d rather I’d reunite with Madeleine.
Poor Maddie truth be told we were doomed from the start. Not just because I couldn’t get over My Queen but, we just weren’t compatible. And it didn’t help that she was still somewhat in love with Leo. Yet and still we tried to make it work. But the court and their whispers of an heir needing to be produced the minute we returned from our honeymoon, became too much. I do think she was a great queen. But with her endometriosis, she could never have children. And with no true blood heir, our marriage failed. I don’t hate her and I sincerely hope that she doesn’t hate me. She was a queen for Cordonia, not for me. I need a queen for me and I found her in My Goddess.
She is everything I could ever ask and pray for in a woman. Which is why this whole ordeal is so frustrating. I found the queen that I need and want. And the court has their noses turned up at her. Instead they’re actually leaning towards the Duchess and her idiot of a fiancé. Preposterous to say the least. They’re worried Shanelle would bring the country to ruin. But they have no idea how much ruin this kingdom would be in if the parliamentary vote goes in their favor. And when and if it does, they’ll be sorry.
All of this makes me thankful for whiskey because without it, I’d be out of my mind. It’s also making my current decision making a lot more fun. So do I or don’t I? I know the risks that I’m taking by signing these but a clear message has to, no…a clear message needs to be sent.
But what would she think? How would she feel or respond? Will she understand my decision? Now I have no delusions. I know that she’d be furious with me, but I’m only doing this for her and her protection. I see the way the vultures in the media treat her. Like she’s a fresh carcass for them to scavenge upon.
And while I’m proud to see that she is doing a fantastic job in her lessons with Regina, she’s still vulnerable in the eyes of the court. I realize that but I also know that she is a brilliantly resilient woman and I have full confidence that she will make a great queen.
That’s why I choose her. Her resilience. She doesn’t know the meaning of the word quit. The way she faces, challenges and takes down adversity is awe inspiring. She makes me a better king and a better man.
But the more I think about it, the more I lean towards approving the documents in front of me. Because I know that they won’t stop until she leaves me and Cordonia forever. And that will be the moment that I become the dictator that it was rumored my father was.
Many in the court whispered that he changed after my mother’s death. Which is partially true, he became suspicious of our enemies and certain allies and with good reason.
Many in the court didn’t like or necessarily agree with my mother. They opposed her being for and about the people. They wanted her to be about maintaining the court and its image. That wasn’t my mother. Like Shanelle, my mother was not a native Cordonian but my father loved her. Dearly. And much to the courts objections, he married her and eventually they had me. They were happy. He was happy. Until she was stolen from us.
My sweet mother. I miss her so much. I just want to hug her. I want to hear her sing to me. I want to see her smile again. I want to tell her how much I love her. Don’t get me wrong, I love Regina and will move heaven, hell and earth for her. She’s been good to me and my brother and she was a saint to my father. I do love her but it’s just not the same.
The way the court treated my mother is how they treat My Goddess and as a king and especially as a son, it’s infuriating. Both are beautiful, fierce and compassionate. My mother would’ve loved Shanelle. And much like Regina, she would’ve done everything that she could to convince the court, that she’s the one. My mother was young and vibrant when she was killed.
I’ve known for years that it wasn’t accidental. But I never knew who murdered her or why, but I vow that I will find out and when I do I will crush her murderers.
I can hear her beautiful voice in my head.
She would be disappointed with me. She would say, “my son, I know that you want to protect your fiancée but this isn’t the way to do it. I raised you to be better than this.”
And she’d be right she did. I am better than this. But I am also a king. My rule is being challenged. So I must do what I have to do as king to protect myself and My Goddess. Which is why these documents sit on my desk. This is how I protect us. What people don’t understand is that being a king is not just a title, it is a responsibility. I am responsible for the health, prosperity and safety of my people and especially my queen.
And what kind of king would I be if I can’t and don’t live up to my responsibilities?
And sure I could just brush off Duchess Kaitlyn and Tariq as nothing. And I really should but I don’t want to. I want them to fear what I can do. All with the swipe of a pen. And well this kind of power is delicious and it makes me understand who my father really was as king.
So if I sign these I will be the dictator that many in court said my father was. And honestly, especially now that I’ve thought about it I don’t care. I’m at my limit and this keeps me from plummeting towards having public executions just for the hell of it.
I can hear both my mother and My Goddess tell me not to do this. They’d say “Marquise you’re upset. You’re not thinking clearly. This decision isn’t who you are. Go get some sleep. You’ll feel better in the morning.” And they’re right I will as soon as I sign these decrees. And sure, Tariq and Lord Winslow will hate me. But that’s what happens when you cross me.
Tumblr media
And with the stroke of my pen it’s done.
Long Live The King!
Forever I shall reign!

Any tips for first time writers? Specifically any tips and tricks for writing CSI stories and the Nick/Greg ship? Trying to stay in character and make the story interesting like a show episode instead of a boring text procedural is hard.
lmao as someone who is forever insecure about my own writing when it comes to keeping the characters in character, I think something to keep in mind is that you may view a character differently than someone else--and sometimes those views align with others, and most of the time it's better than what's presented in canon, and it can be really difficult to get confident about that, but I think that creating anything, even if it's not just writing--drawing, giffing, photo edits, etc, you do know and love that character enough to bring them to life under your hands and it's something that's just so like, poetic about keeping these characters alive, even if the show offed them or the show is cancelled, in these works (honestly the song "poet" by bastille says this best imo) and you may end up discovering parts of yourself as you explore these characters in depth, you'll learn more about them, too, and the more you write, the more confidence you will gain
but be weary of the validation trap (says someone who falls into it literally every time I post a fic)--do not rely on comments and feedback to let you know you're doing it "right." the fact that you're getting thoughts into words onto paper is good enough, and you are good enough and even if you don't end up sharing it, you still did something special that nobody else has done before, and that, is amazing!
I'm not gonna lie, a huge weakness of mine that I feel I've known ever since I started writing CSI fic is that I really don't do well in making cases for the CSIs to work on--and even when I do, the case is usually forgotten by the end of the fic and I end up just kinda focusing on the emotions between the characters and describing their feelings and actions the best I can and unfortunately the plot sometimes suffers because of that.
I guess it really depends on what you want out of your story--do you want a really intriguing case and basically make an episode of CSI, or do you want to kind of bend out of the procedural drama, and just write something fluffy like Nick/Greg going on a roadtrip or something actiony like them getting into some sort of trouble? (as I often do lmao)
Something that does always help me when I do decide I want an actual like, "plot" to the fic beyond just playing around with the characters and making them do things or experience things is that I'll make myself a very flexible outline--which I will admit, at times, does kinda drain the fun out of the actual writing part but I found that I'll try to write chapters/fics in segments in this way, like I'll have the start of a fic, and then when I feel like I need to break but want to write what I got going next, I'll have something in brackets like: [Self deprecation at home/drinking, evil Nick in the mirror?] (for agony), and sometimes maybe a bigger summary, and sometimes less to just kinda remind myself of what I wanted to accomplish with a fic
BUT know that there are gonna be things that pop up sometimes. twists that come to you halfway through a fic--or if you're lucky, you'll find that your reader friends will kinda give you a twist to add in (my fic Last Breath is the greatest example of this--I originally was gonna do like, 12 chapters but then @dannilea said "HEY MK GIVE NICK AMNESIA" and then the fic got doubled in length lmao) so don't feel confined to any sort of outline. go with the flow, go with what feels right for you.
I know it's a lesson I'm still learning myself, but do not pressure yourself with these sorts of things. there are no deadlines. you're not doing anything wrong. if you don't like something you wrote? don't delete it (i've deleted so many things--fics, my entire blog, old art and gifs I did and it's one of my biggest regrets that I carry with me and god...it just hurts) but don't be afraid to tweak, re-write or rework if you need to--I know ao3 has an option where you can even say something is a "remix" of another work if you write a fic and then somewhere down the line, decide to expand on it or change it up? (I think it's meant for that at least, I haven't done that sort of thing....yet)
and that's another thing--you'll always be learning new things as you keep writing. I've been writing since I was like, twelve years old. Had a long ass depressive gap (though I did still write some things, just not...as intensely as I used to) before I came back to the CSI fandom (which I never felt I contributed to before, when I joined tumblr I posted some caps but that was about it, it really wasn't until 2018 that I started giffing and writing and three years later lmao here we are!) and there are just hard lessons you do learn--like I said, the validation trap and pressure and all of that
but motivation wise, something I've been (trying) to do is write at least 100 words per day. Doesn't have to be a specific fic, doesn't have to be anything I intend to make a fic, but just...getting the words flowing. But again, no pressure, because I recently had another depressive bout and went 33 days without writing and it climaxed to me having another mental breakdown swearing I was never gonna write again and damn near deleting everything and giving up.........only to start writing again the next day (and full disclosure, I did have a friend helping me literally every day with that and if they read this, I hope they know how forever grateful I am that they convinced me to keep going and I would not actually be here without them)
You will need to recharge, you will need to be mindful of outside stresses that may be impacting your creative energies. And sometimes, you can try doing things not relating to writing at all. Make a playlist of songs that make you think about the fic; if you can, draw or make photo edits of the fic. find a friend to bounce ideas off of--so many of my fics were enriched by that, I can't even begin to list them all lol.
But above all, again, just know that what you're writing is unique to you, nobody else will be able to write the way you do, and that is just...so special. writing can be difficult, it's exhausting, it's a thankless job at times but when those words start clicking together and your fingers just keep typing/writing, you'll just kinda get this like, rush like nothing I've ever been able to match.
and lmao I know you said specifically CSI and Nick/Greg and feel like I got sidetracked--but the great thing about CSI is I feel like you'll have excuses to put them in situations given their line of work, but like I said before, you can bend out of the genre a little bit. Have Nick and Greg go on a vacation, or make an AU (even something as wild as a sci-fi AU--honestly Specimen Stokes is the most fun I've had in writing the past three years) or if you do want to stick to canon, and don't want to make a whole new case or elaborate on the details--play with an established episode. If there was a Nick focused episode, what was Greg doing and vice versa? Did they talk about things afterwards, or did something happen leading up to the episode that made them act a certain way around each other?
I'll honestly find inspiration also just watching the episodes--something I've been doing in these past few months of my rewatch is making little ficlets about the episode, like I wrote one about Nick and Greg post 6x02 elaborating on the breathplay that Greg hinted about earlier in the episode, or I made a revenge fic for 14x12 where that douchey abusive husband went after Nick, etc. So sometimes it helps to dive back into canon and play in that sandbox too
I hope these tips can help get you started and honestly, don't feel obligated to agree or do any of these things I listed above. We all have different ways of going about writing, and it is just one big learning process and something I don't think I'm ever gonna perfect or master in any sort of way--(not to say I think I'm the worst writer in the world but I just...try to humble myself and not believe I'm the best or better than anybody else cause that's part of the validation trap, you get those ideas in your head and then it can destroy you when you realize you're definitely not)--and there will be times you get heavily discouraged, but...you just gotta keep going. keep pushing. find outside encouragement, but don't rely on it. practice a lot of self care and don't pressure yourself to finish or share or write more than you think you can. just...let it come, and enjoy the ride
I honestly feel like I'm one of the least qualified to say all of these things, but I really do hope it helps and hey, you already got one cheerleader, me, who will be excited to read whatever you share!

My Ranking of Every Hercule Flambeau Episode (S01-S08)
There are some spoilers for S7 and S8, but they are fairly vague and pretty much the sort of thing that you might see on the official press release. So not true spoilers as such. Also this is totally subjective and the result of my own personal biases. It’s also behind the cut because it’s looooonnng.
8. The Two Deaths of Hercule Flambeau (s06e10)--
So, this episode is *fine*. It’s hardly the worst episode of the show, but it’s easily the weakest of the Flamby eps, despite their being a few isolated moments I enjoy. (Hercule getting a long overdue bedroom scene for one :P)
My main gripe is with this episode is the uneven way Lisandra Flambeau is written. The script seems to flip-flop over whether we are supposed to find her sympathetic or not.  On one hand,  many scenes imply that she genuinely loves Hercule despite them having a shotgun marriage after only a few days of knowing each other. On the other hand, she does not hesitate for a minute before poisoning an innocent (Fr. B) for no other reason than to hurt Flamby, which makes her lose a lot of sympathy points.
And as a result, it seems to make Flambeau seem like more of arse than normal for betraying her, while somehow also absolving him of responsibility for doing so, because she turns around and does *THAT.*
And ngl, it does make me a little uncomfortable that while the character of Lisandra (as an Italian) is possibly not meant to be interpreted as a POC, the actress portraying her definitely is. (Sara Martins is of Afro-Portuguese descent).  Which makes the uneven characterization (and underwritten-ness) seem even more glaring, especially  when compared to that of the other (white) women in Flambeau’s life (his first love Rebecca and his daughter Marianne, arguably Lady Felicia as well). It just leaves a bad taste in my mouth even if  in all likelihood, the part wasn’t written with Sara Martins in mind.
I think a much more interesting approach to Lisandra would be to have intending to betray Flambeau all along. Maybe she had her own agenda for seducing Flamby, meanwhile he thinks he’s the one using her for his plan. Maybe she does develop some feelings for him along the way, but it only makes her hesitate for a moment before going ahead with her original plan. That way, she keeps her agency and isn’t reduced to the “woman scorned” stereotype while also leaving the writers free to ship Flamby with others in the future without seemingly endorsing guilt-free adultery .
Other random note: I can’t take  parts of this episode seriously because the “Crown of Lombardy” is very obviously Guinevere’s crown from BBC Merlin with no attempt to alter or disguise it.
7. The Daughter of Autolycus (s04e05)--
Not gonna lie, I am not really a fan of “character has long lost relative that we’ve never heard of until now” plots. And that goes double when said long-lost relative is a child or sibling. As such my low ranking of this episode is partly due to unconscious personal biases against that trope.
That being said, if we had to get a long-lost relative that we’ve never heard of until now plot, I’m so glad we got Marianne--even if it takes her another episode to really live up to her potential.
I have to knock off a few more points for Nero Hound as a villain. For one thing, he was played by Nancy Carroll’s real-life hubby, but they didn’t let let him interact with Lady F at all. Such a *waste.*  Also Nero Hound is far too similar a name to Nero Wolfe, and I’ve definitely confused them on more than one occasion). He’s also rather generic in my opinion, even compared to some of Flambeau’s other “generic mobster” rivals/associates like the ones in S8.
However, there are some moments in this episode I genuinely like--particularly the theft “imagine spot” and Flambeau’s bishop disguise in general. Plus, the scenes where Flambeau and Marianne appear together are excellent, as are the hints that Marianne will become a redemptive trigger in Flambeau’s life.
6. The Judgement of Man (s03e10)--
Again, the low ranking of this one may be due to personal biases.  In this case, I’m still low-key bitter--five years later-- at the BBC marketing department for baiting me with the idea of Flambeau actually interacting with the rest of the squad (esp romantic tiems with Lady F)  and then giving me the absolute minimum of Felicia/Flambeau flirting and no Flambeau/Sid and Flambeau/Mrs. M interaction.
But there are other reasons why this is in my bottom 3 Flambeau episodes.
Honestly, I feel like an equally compelling episode about the Vatican’s complicity in Nazi art theft could’ve been made without having to insert Flambeau in it. I mean I suppose it does make sense to have the art thief character  in the art episode, but still I feel like both Flambeau backstory and important historical lesson about Nazis, the Church, and Jewish art suffer from being crammed into the same episode.
That being said, Mrs. McCarthy’s duchess disguise in this episode cleared my skin, watered my crops, etc, which is why I’ve ranked it higher than the previous two.
5. The Folly of Jephthah (s08e05)
It loses a few points because I got very exited about the idea of Marianne becoming Bunty’s thief gf cool new friend, and yet in the episode itself, they only shared one scene and didn’t really interact much in it. That being said, I did like like that Bunty and Mrs. M had a bigger role in this episode than the squad usually gets in Flambeau episodes.
Overall, I feel this episode works a lot better than most of the other backstory-heavy” Flambeau episodes, because we’ve already gotten the Marianne-related exposition out of the way and can focus more on allowing her character, Flambeau’s and their relationship with each other to develop.
I’m also a bit smug in that I predicted (or at least hoped for) this exact character arc for Marianne within a few weeks of “The Daughter of Autocylus” airing and that my hopes came to fruition so beautifully.
It doesn’t particularly impact the ranking too much, but I do feel like this episode deserves a special shout out, because it has established a (hopefully-continuing!) pattern of Father Brown calling Flamby  almost exclusively by his first name, which is a major significant step in their bromance and deserves recognition as such.
4. The Blue Cross (s01e10)--
As someone who was first exposed to Father Brown through reading the stories for a college course, I always find it especially interesting to look at the episodes that were adapted from Chesterton.
This episode is neither the most faithful book-to-show adaptation (which is probably “The Three Tools of Death”) nor is it the best (imo “The Sign of the Broken Sword’) , but it is arguably the most significant. “The Blue Cross” was the first ever Fr. Brown story and is probably the most well-known. It’s also the first real look we get at the character of Flambeau, who (in the stories and arguably the show as well) is probably the closest thing we get to a clear character arc.
The show keeps some of the important elements of the short  story: Flambeau’s clergyman disguise, the switching of the packages. But it also has the challenging task of upping the relatively low stakes of the story, as well as introducing a major recurring character that resembles his book counterpart but remains distinct enough to justify the fairly different direction show canon is taking him.
The show does this reasonably well--if not particularly imaginatively. I do enjoy some of the touches (I’ve written an entire meta before about Flamby’s reading material on the train and how it relates to his character)--particularly the show’s choice to have Flambeau fixated on religious art specifically (RIP for Flambeau’s Dairy Company though. It will always live in my heart).
Unfortunately in the adaptation, loses a few points for not really using the show-original characters particularly effectively. It loses still more for Flambeau’s characterization in this episode . He comes across as much more  serious and menacing in this episode than in all the others. It works okay when we consider this as a standalone episode but provides some glaring Early Installment Weirdness when we compare it to other episodes.
3. The Penitent Man (s05e15)--
So as the rest of this list  will testify, I have strong preference for the “fun” Flambeau episodes over the more series ones. This is the exception that proves the rule--the  serious, cerebral, melancholy episode that simply “works” for me in the way that some of the others have not.
A lot of it is due to the more-intense-than-usual Flambeau character focus that goes into this. Sure, we’ve met his (presumably ex-by-now) wife, his daughter, and his first love by this point, but all of those episodes focused primarily on Flambeau as an extension of the relationships with others. (”The Judgement of Man”  in particular is far more Rebecca’s story than Hercule’s.)
Whereas this episode is very definitively focused on Flambeau himself and allows more nuanced exploration of two of the most defining facets of Flambeau’s character:  (1) his fascination with religion--and spiritual salvation in particular--  as  something he seems to resist and crave in near equal measure  (2) his almost masochistic streak of recklessness.
Even though Flambeau’s supposed “piety” is revealed to be all part of his heist plan, there are strong hints that his desire for redemption and atonement are at least somewhat genuine, even if he is not  ready to pursue them just yet.
Off topic, but a few random things of note in this episode: this episode all-but-confirms bi!Flambeau, wet!Flambeau at the end is extremely relevant to my interests, Father Brown attempts to smuggle Flamby a lock pick from the beginning and has the audacity to say “ I only use it when I get locked out of the presbytery.”
Also, it has this iconic exchange:
Goodfellow: What is that awful smell?
Father Brown (covered in sewage): It’s me
2. The Honorable Thief (S07e10)-- So nearly all of the Flambeau-centered episodes from S3 on  have been a little preoccupied with filling in some of the gaps in Flambeau’s backstory, which is *fine*, but honestly, I feel like in doing so, they’ve really lost sight of why we fell in love with the character in the first place.
He’s vibrant and clever and funny and over-the-top. But most importantly, Flambeau is a lot of fun. Therefore, it follows that episodes that feature him should be a lot of fun too.
And well... they are all fun in some way,  but they aren’t as fun as they really could be. John Light is insanely charismatic, but charisma can only go so far when the episode in question is a downer.
Fortunately, this episode is the furthest thing from a downer imaginable. It’s absolutely delightful from start to finish. The plot is serious enough to keep things engaging, but also light enough to keep us from getting too distracted by angst.
I’m also incredibly biased in favor of this episode, because it finally gave me the Felicia/Flambeau ship tease I’d been passionately hoping for (if not really expecting to get after “The Judgement of Man” disappointed me). But it was so much and so good, and I wasn’t ready for it.
In a broader sense though, this episode really delivered with Flambeau/squad interaction in general--which was a key component that has been missing from most of the other episodes. And the Father Brown & Flambeau interactions were also has heartwarming and funny as they always are.
If I have one tiny little gripe with the episode, it’s that Daniel is not Sid. He has enough broad similarities with Sid that I can’t help but wonder if the episode was originally written with Sid and then hastily re-written when Alex Price couldn’t return. That being said, he was a likable enough guest character in his own right, and I wouldn’t mind seeing him again.
1.  The Mysteries of the Rosary (S02e05)-- Perfection. Not only is this THE definitive Flambeau episode, but is also one of the best episodes of the show overall. It has everything: the birth of bearded Flamby, bromantic road trips, a treasure hunt, great guest turns from Anton Lesser and Sylvestra Le Touzel.
I think part of the reason this episode resonates so strongly with me is that it’s really the first proper sense that we get of Show!Flambeau as a character. Sure we officially met him in “The Blue Cross,” but considering he didn’t show up until halfway through the episode and was in disguise for most of it, we didn’t really get much of a sense of who he is.
This episode changes all that and sets Flambeau up as the character we will know and love for the rest of the series--charming, urbane, funny, passionate, a carefree carpe diem exterior masking (or overcompensating for?) a sense of uncertainty and conflictedness.
Somewhat off topic, but as great an episode as this is for Flambeau’s character, it is nearly as wonderful for both Sid and Father Brown’s characters. We get to see Sid’s  ease with Father Brown, the casual camraderie that the two of them have--as well as Sid’s protectiveness (and jealousy) when Flambeau decides to gatecrash their bromantic road trip.
Honestly, there are so many things that are great about this episode that I don’t think I could possibly list them--but one little detail that really struck my the last time I watched was that the first proper glimpse we see of Flambeau in this episode (we see him in shadow in a flashback before) involves him  saving Father Brown’s life.  Whereas the last proper glimpse we see of Flambeau is after Father Brown has saved Flambeau’s life.  Thematic reversals. Cinematic parallels. We love to see it.

Babylon Vol. 1: A Favor For A Friend
Tumblr media
[ID: a blue patterned banner with text reading “BABYLON.” End ID.]
By dragonstoravens and @charlottedotexe
(In keeping with the plan to post an update every Friday, here’s chapter 5. A lot of these early chapters are a bit shorter, in a sort of anthology style as we get to know the characters. Hope you enjoy!)
5. A Favor For A Friend
Trinity leaned back on his couch with a groan, hovering over the ‘send’ button on his chat screen. This had to be the weirdest last resort ever, but this week had been yet another lesson in how not to have a social life in your 20s, by well known business mogul Trinity Jericho. Sure, he and Azure had been talking for some time now, ever since she fixed his eye, and sure, he was starting to consider her perhaps the closest friend he had, but that didn’t make his request any less strange. Still, it was either this, or pay a literal spy to come with him. His younger sister Adriel had offered, in return for as many juice pouches as she wanted, but that likely would have raised more rumors than it put to rest, and that would defeat the whole purpose of this crazy plan. He sighed, speaking aloud to his empty office. “I can’t send this message.”
A quiet ding from his screen’s voice control. He hadn’t realized it was on. “Message sent.”
“Fuck.”
Azure’s response was nearly instantaneous.
[Azure] You want me to dress up and go to some fancy shindig with you?
[Azure] Is the theme of the night bad dates with lacking manners? Surely you’ve got better options, dude. No hot supermodels? Cool alien mistresses? Long lost childhood friends you’ve been forlorn about losing since they moved away, but you just saw them at the supermarket and now your whole world is changing?
    A pause.
[Azure] Ignore that last one, that’s the plot of a book I’ve been reading.
Trinity chuckled despite himself. The manners issue had, in fact, been one of his many worries about this whole request. But he couldn’t back out now.
[Hotshot] I’m not going to dignify most of those questions with a response. It was this or pay my 13 year old sister in juice pouches, and that’ll raise more questions than it settles. I promise it’s a one time thing-- I just need the Polinskis to stop throwing their daughter at me.
He paused, biting the inside of his lip as he debated once more if this was actually a good idea.
[Hotshot] You don’t have to. I know you’re not experienced with this kind of event, or this kind of society.
Azure read the message and sat back in her chair, thinking. She hated fancy parties, they required being stuffy and shoved into dresses that wouldn’t last eight seconds in her lab before getting too dirty to ever wear again, and rich people liked to smell like weird fruit these days along with being judgemental to a degree that gave her hives to think about. But still, Trinity had been growing on her these last few months. Maybe once wouldn’t kill her, if it made his life a little easier. She was nothing if not a giver, and it would give her an excuse to use some fun experimental tech she’d been hoping to test out.
[Azure] Yeah, I'll suffer through it once. You owe me, though. I'll have my brother whip up somethin' for us to wear. You think a MiZara original will sell the ludicrous idea that I'm in any way fancy, or am I gonna have to read up on shrimp forks to pass?
Trinity couldn’t quite stop himself from sighing in relief. She hadn’t said no.
[Hotshot] You’re right, I owe you. Thanks.
Message sent and one more stressor out of the way, although he still wasn’t sure this wasn’t going to come back to bite him later, possibly in the form of Azzy being… well, herself, in high society. There was a lot he would have to teach her, and not nearly enough time to do it. He read over her message again with a sigh. At least she was taking care of the… dress?
Azure’s screen displayed the message ‘Hotshot is typing’ for 30 seconds. A minute. Two.
Ping.
[Hotshot] Wait, MIZARA?
He could practically hear her peal of laughter at his moment of realization.
[Azure] My last name is Zaraya. I already told you my brother was a designer. I thought you'd’ve put two and two together by now, hotshot, what happened to that mastermind brain of yours?
Trinity shook his head bemusedly as he typed, even though she couldn’t see it.
[Hotshot] You’re the one who always says I think about nothing except work. Anyway, I have suits, I don’t want to owe you any more than I already do for making you wear a dress.
[Azure] If you think he’s gonna let us go without matching, you’re outta your mind and also you clearly do not know my brother.
Azure sighed as the message whooshed away. They had a lot of ground to cover if she didn’t want to ruin her buddy’s reputation on sight. Cover stories and false names and back up plans, along with how to walk in heels and other weird things that she was definitely not suited for.
[Azure] Alright hotshot, tell me everything I need to be a high society girlfriend. Crimson can help me brush up on manners, but we might want a plan. I haven’t been on a date in ages, can’t say I recall how they work.
[Hotshot] I have a plan, don’t worry. But you don’t have to play a *girlfriend.* I’m not going to ask you to closet yourself for this.
[Azure] Nah, it’s cool. If I’m not acting like a whole different person, it won’t stick, and then I’ll do something dumb and ruin the whole thing. Plus the idea of coming out to a whole lot of new people all night gives me hives. Now c’mon, gimme the rules. I have flashcards to make.
Trinity couldn’t blame her for that. For all that he liked to keep his personal life very, well, personal, he had taken a chance and corrected someone as to his sexuality once. To one person. At the next event, half of his contacts were throwing double the children at him, now aware that men and women were both fair game. The other half had mostly made some inane reference to him being a “player” or the obligatory threesome joke, and a few had awkwardly avoided him ever since-- which he honestly couldn’t complain about. He’d honestly prefer more of his acquaintances to be the specific brand of biphobic that meant they’d leave him alone.
Reading over Azure’s message one more time, he stifled a tiny chuckle. Flashcards, for the rules of dating in society? At least his next event would be entertaining.

It’s now time for movie night! This is one of my favorite chapters. And the movie they choose was my husband's idea. Lastly I’m introducing an original character.
Life is Never what you Expect Chapter 10 Word Count: 4221
_______________________
The buzzer sounded and Chase hurried out of the kitchen to switch his clothes into the dryer. Though he only made it half-way when Marvin called after him. “Chase.” He stopped and looked back. “Lesson one is to keep focused. Don't let yourself get distracted.”
“My bad. I'll be right back though,” Chase told him as he turned back around.
Marvin let out a sigh and waited for him to come back. Once he did, Marvin spoke up again. “You need to keep focused when you're cooking. Otherwise you risk the food getting over-cooked if you aren't.” Chase muttered an apology. “You don't need to apologize. You wanted to learn; that's just the first lesson. But as a suggestion, don't be afraid to use timers. Whether it's the one on the stove or the one on your phone. That way, if you've done what you can and need to step away, you will know when it's time to continue.”
Chase nodded. “Should I be taking notes?”
Shaking his head, Marvin told him, “Don't worry, I won't abandon you in the kitchen. Not until you know what your doing anyway.”
“Wow. Thanks.” Marvin couldn't help but laugh before directing them to their work.
It was an hour ago when Marvin agreed to teach Chase how to cook. He had quit his early preparations then so the two of them could work on it together. It was a drawn-out process. Marvin didn't mind help with somethings, but when making dinner he had his routine. He knew what to do and when. It was an entirely different matter when he had to explain and teach someone along the way. He found he had to refrain himself from taking over so it would get done quicker.
Dinner was completed just as Henrik walked in the house. “You made it!” Jackie called out to him, failing horribly to hide his excitement at the fact.
“Yes, I did,” Henrik stated as he removed his shoes. “No emergencies meant I could get out sooner than usual.” Looking up at Jackie, he couldn't help but smile. The obvious happiness on his face was infectious.
“Guys! Dinner's done!” They heard Chase call out from the kitchen.
“I'm gonna go get Jameson,” Jackie said as he bolted for the stairs. He was skipping steps as he went and almost made it flawlessly as he nearly tripped on one of the last steps.
Chase stuck his head out of the kitchen and noticed Henrik just as the older man was heading towards his room to change. “Oh, hey, you made it on time.”
“Mm. There were no emergencies. No one minded if I left a little early.”
“Cool. Dinner's done so... I mean, whenever you're ready it'll be waiting.” The man seemed nervous. Henrik offered him a smile and told him he'll be there soon. Chase nodded before he ducked back into the kitchen.
“You did fine.”
Chase glanced over at Marvin, who was collecting plates from the cupboard. Was it really that obvious how anxious he was? “You think so? I didn't mess up?”
With an encouraging smile, Marvin told him, “Nothing I couldn't fix.” Chase bit his lip, anxiousness swelling. “You know... You just reminded me of how I was when I was first getting started.  I was just as anxious; always worried it didn't turn out. Or that it wouldn't taste right. And, sure, sometimes it didn't. But you know what? That was okay. Cause in the beginning, you're learning. And even when you get better, you're still learning. There's always something new, or new ways to try something. So...” He paused for a moment before finishing his thought. “Try not to worry too much.”
“... Yeah, I guess you're right.”
“Though, we probably could have made something a little easier for your first lesson...”
Chase laughed, feeling a little more relaxed. “Well, if it's not horrible I guess I could call it a win.”
“Exactly. Positive thinking.” Marvin watched Chase bring the meal to the table with a soft smile. Cheering people up was always easier than making himself feel better.
Henrik was the first to come back. He asked if there was anything they needed help with, Chase shook his head and told him they had it taken care of. Marvin asked him to have a seat as he brought over drinks. Jackie, Henrik noticed, seemed to have lost his spark as he entered the dining room. Though that didn't seem to last long after he sat down next to Henrik. Shortly after Jameson and Anti joined them.
Chase watched as the others took their first bites. He wanted to ask them what they thought but held himself back from doing so. Instead he waited. Anxious, despite what Marvin said. “So,” Marvin spoke up after a moment passed. “How did it turn out?” Chase hadn't expected him to ask that.
“Did you do something different?” Henrik asked.
“In a sense.”
Marvin, Chase, and Jackie as well all had their attention to Henrik. “Despite any changes you may have made, I believe it is very good.” With a smile, Marvin turned to Chase who looked utterly relieved. Henrik didn't miss this exchange. “Chase, did you make this?”
“Yeah... Marvin taught me how and fixed my screw-ups,” Chase told him. “That's, probably why it tastes weird.”
Henrik shook his head. “A little different than the last time we've had it.”
“Yeah,” Jackie commented. “It turned out great. Marvin can teach anyone how to cook no matter how good they are.”
“Wow,” Chase muttered as Marvin spoke up as well. “I don't if that was meant to insult me or compliment Marvin.” Henrik, having heard this, laughed.
Marvin turned to Jackie after his statement. “You're going to have to learn eventually. You can't survive on fast food.”
“Watch me,” Jackie stated before sticking a fork full of food in his mouth. He knew the jab was out of good fun and not meant to be taken completely seriously. Since clearly he didn't always eat fast food. Though, Marvin would argue that having it once a day counted as always.
Chase turned his attention to the other side of the table. Jameson offered him a smile. “You did a good job. Despite whichever mistake you may have made, you two fixed it up.”
Then, warily, Chase looked to Anti. He wondered if he should ask, though decided against it seeing as the other man was eating. So, that must mean he liked it. Right? Turning away, Chase focused on his own plate of food.
Conversation started up. Chase was the topic of discussion and the man in question didn't seem to mind. Anti, however, remained quiet. He didn't miss the glances that were sent his way. From Henrik. From Jameson. As well as from Chase. One with a curious, questioning expression. One was wary. And... the last. Jameson must have noticed his lack of eating, since his look was of worry. Though due to the day the two of them had, Anti wasn't entirely surprised. The man had barely left his side.
This was the fourth day. After today was over it would be three more before Jack comes back from his trip. He can manage that. He'd done longer... He... A sudden unease welled up and Anti suddenly became very much aware of how many people were there. Anti tried to ignore the feeling but it was too much. Pushing his seat back he got to his feet. “Anti?” He spared a glance to Marvin. Then turned and left the room without a word. Though he didn't miss the concerned look Jameson gave him as he left.
Anti quickly made his way upstairs. He hadn't thought it would be such a problem. This was the first year that he wouldn't be alone, but, he was so used to dealing with everything by himself. Was having people around just making it harder? Anti stopped his pacing. It wasn't going to happen again. He's managed longer than a week he could do it again. And... he promised Jack. He slumped down on the futon and rested his head in his hands. He'd promised her too... Three more days. It'll be just in time. Then he could deal with it the same way he always did.
Some time later, there was a soft knock on his door. After a moment a voice spoke up. “Anti?” Honestly he should have known who it was. “Anti, would you care to join us?” Jameson tried again when there wasn't an answer the first time. “We will be watching a movie. And having some snacks.”
Part of him liked the idea. Except... “No.”
“... Are you alright?”
That concern again. “Yes.” It was a lie. He was never 'alright' this time of year. But as long as the man believed him that was all that mattered. Though from what he knew of him it was unlikely he did.
Anti could practically feel the hesitation through the door. Finally, Jameson spoke again. “If you change your mind you are free to join us.” There was a pause, then he walked away.
As Jameson stepped back into the living room the others were already discussing what movie they should watch. Jackie was suggesting one of his superhero movies, while Chase had netflix open. Henrik was seated on the couch across from the tv with a drink in hand. Marvin offered Jameson a smile as he walked in the room. He was carrying a drink of his own as well as a bowl of popcorn. “Why not let Henrik choose our movie tonight,” Marvin suggested as he sat himself down in the opposite corner as Henrik.
“Oh, I don't mind,” Henrik commented as he leaned forward to collect a handful of popcorn from the bowl on the coffee table. “Watching their debate has a fair amount of entertainment.” Marvin let out a sigh as the other two bickered about why they should or shouldn't watch the next movie in the series.
Jameson walked over and poured himself a cup of tea and sat down on the unoccupied couch. “Is there something interesting on?” he asked trying to offer up a different direction for options.
“Whoa whoa whoa, wait a minute. Did you just say superhero movies aren't interesting?” Jackie questioned as he looked back. Chase took this moment to lean back and ask Henrik for movie ideas he could look up on Netflix.
“I did not say that specifically. Though, I suppose that it would depend on the opinion of interesting,” he told him. “After all, from a narrative viewpoint they could be rather predictable.”
“That's not true and you know it.”
“Are you certain?”
Jackie paused before giving a huff. “Okay, fine. But you don't watch them cause they're 'interesting', even though the are. You watch 'em cause they're cool.”
“Oh! What about that one?” Marvin pointed to the TV as Chase was looking through some of the options.
Jackie looked to the screen. “Which one?” Chase asked as he flipped back.
“There,” Marvin stated once it came back up.
Chase glanced back at him and asked, “You want to watch Van Helsing?”
“Well, not that one exactly. Maybe something with supernatural stuff.” Then added, “Or maybe fantasy.”
Jackie accepted the fact, though disappointed, that they wouldn't be watching the next Marvel movie. “I guess I'd be cool with sci-fi,” he told them throwing in his vote.
After a couple minutes of movies being suggested, Henrik spoke up. “I, Frankenstein.”
Jackie voiced his confusion as Chase stated, “Oh yeah. There it is.”
“You want to watch that?”
“Is that so strange?” Henrik asked.
“I mean, sometimes you do give off the mad scientist vibe,” Jackie stated.
Henrik, turning his attention to Jackie, told him, “Well, I would most certainly like to know how you manage everyday with only a few hours of sleep.”
“How do you know I only get a few hours? You're asleep before any of us.”
“I know quite a few of your bad habits.” With a smile, Henrik leaned forward and asked, “Should we test the extent of your uniqueness's?”
“Uh... I think I'll pass.”
Chase and Marvin laughed while Jameson watched on in amusement. “So, we're watching this then?” Chase asked already assuming the answer.
He got a couple approvals before Jackie spoke up. “I actually haven't seen it before so...”
Marvin looked over as he accepted some licorice from Jameson. Both him and Chase spoke at the same time. “Dude, you haven't seen it?” “Wait, you haven't watched it?”
Jackie glanced between them before stating, “I just said that.”
“It does seem like the sort of movie you would watch,” Jameson added.
Looking between the group, Jackie paused for a moment before asking, “You mean I'm the only one who hasn't watched this?”
“I'm afraid so,” Henrik stated. He sat back comfortably with his cup of tea.
Jackie looked to Jameson and Marvin. “We had a movie exchange.” Marvin spoke up. “He had me watch I, Frankenstein and he watched The Greatest Showman.”
He stared at Marvin for a minute. “Fine,” Jackie sighed. He grabbed a handful of the M&M's from the bowl before hopping up on the couch next to Jameson. “Let's just watch the movie.” Chase hit play, then turned his attention back to Jackie in time to watch him dump half of the handful in his mouth. It took only seconds for the realization to hit. “Oh my god. Who did it?!”
Marvin, very much aware of what happened, asked, “Did what?” He managed to refrain himself from showing amusement. Chase on the other hand struggled to hide his grin.
“Chase! You-”
Chase laughed. “I knew it would have been either you or Henrik!”
Henrik, confused, turned his attention to the bickerment. “What has happened?”
Jackie pointed accusingly at Chase. “He mixed M&M's with peanut butter M&M's and Skittles!”
“That would be a terrible combination.” Jameson shook his head at Marvin's remark.
Jackie turned to Marvin wide-eyed. “Did you know..?”
“Well, I did tell him it wasn't a good idea.”
“Marvin how could you. You didn't even warn me. I feel betrayed.” Jackie brought a hand to his chest. “Both of my friends.” He sniffed. “How could you?” Chase threw a gummy bear at him hitting him on the cheek. When Jackie turned his attention to Chase, Marvin threw a handful of popcorn. Though not all of it hit its mark. Jackie retaliated by throwing candy back at them. Jameson leaned back into his seat to hopefully not get caught in the crossfire. Henrik shook his head and simply covered his cup with his hand so as not to get candy in his drink. Eventually they all settled down and started actually watching the movie.
About forty minutes in the movie Jackie turned his attention away. He carefully glanced around the room. It didn't take him long to notice Anti standing in the corner of the room, across from the stairs. Anti stood quietly with his arms crossed watching the movie. Jackie's attention was averted when he felt a slight nudge from Jameson.  The man offered him some of his licorice. He paused before reaching over and muttering a thanks. Jameson smiled in response before turning back to the movie. Jackie sent another glance to Anti and noticed him watching them before taking half a step back to lean against the wall, then turning back to the movie. Jackie looked away. The others hadn't noticed Anti. And if they did they didn't say anything. Finally, Jackie tried to focus back on the movie.
“So, basically monsters get a soul if they do a good deed?” Jackie asked as the credits ran.
“I think it's more of doing a good deed for someone else without thought of yourself. But,” Jackie looked over at Marvin when he said 'but'. “If we were speaking hypothetically, I think there would be more to it than that.”
Jameson dropped his feet off the couch and back to the floor. “Oh, are we going to have a hypothetical debate?”
“You want to have a debate?” Chase asked.
“Yes. The hypothetical situation debates are the best kind,” Jameson told him with a bit of excitement in his tone. He was clearly eager to have this discussion.
Marvin grinned. “Well, where do you stand in this debate then?”
His friend tapped his chin in thought for a moment. “You say there is more to gaining a soul then simply doing something good for someone else without thought of personal gain. But I say, that that doesn't have to be the case.”
More to it then a good deed. But like what? “Why can't there be more than one way to get a soul?” Chase asked. “Like, it depends on the situation or something?” Depends on the situation... but, what would determine it then?
“Jackie?”
Jackie jerked his head up. “Huh?”
“You good?” Chase asked. “You were totally zoning.”
“Yeah. Sorry, I'm probably tired or something.” Jackie got up off the couch. “I think I'm just gonna head to my room,” he stated as he glanced over to where Anti had been standing earlier but didn't see him.
As Jackie left the room, Chase glanced between the others, who hesitated before started up their debate again. Chase quietly got up and headed to the hallway. He knocked on Jackie's door and, when he was given a response, asked, “Hey, can I come in?”
“... Yeah, I guess.”
Chase opened the room door and stepped inside. Jackie was seated on the edge of his bed. “Hey, uh...” Chase paused. “You sure you're doing alright?”
Jackie sighed. “Yeah. Sorry; I know I'm usually more excited about movie night. And it's cool that Henrik could make it. It's just... I don't know. I guess I just got stuff on my mind.”
“No, man, it's cool. If you want to vent and get stuff off your chest though I'll listen,” he offered. “I, uh, don't think I can really give you much advice. And if it's college stuff, you might want to go to Henrik. Just saying.”
Jackie managed a laugh. “Nah, I'm good. Thanks though.” He paused for a second before telling him, “And thanks for reminding me about my upcoming exams. Now I'll be thinking about that.” His tone had a touch of sarcasm in it.
With a laugh, Chase told him, “Oh crap, sorry. ...So, how do you think you're gonna do?”
Jackie shrugged. “Not bad? I mean, I'm sure I'll pass but still.” He let out a breath and gave Chase a distracted smile but a smile nonetheless. “Maybe it's just cause of stress that I'm out of it.” Since Chase brought up college it was a good excuse.
“Yeah, maybe. Hey, let me know if you need another distraction. I'll be happy to provide,” he added with a grin.
“Yeah, sure.” Chase waved as he left his room closing the door as he went. He sat in silence for a few minutes before his thoughts drifted back to what he'd been thinking about before. Does everything have a soul? Do monsters? … Vampires? How would you even know if they did? Did it make them any less evil if they did? He'd never really thought about this before. When he was younger, he'd always thought anything that wasn't human was evil. He'd never considered the affect having a soul could play.
He wasn't sure why he was considering calling. If he didn't the other day he shouldn't now. Jackie looked over at his phone, which sat next to him on the bed. Picking it up, he kicked his feet up on the bed and shuffled back to relax before opening up the contacts list. He didn't have a lot of people saved so there wasn't a long list to look through. Jackie hesitated at a couple names before he finally decided on who to contact.
Tapping on his phone he pulled up the texting and sent them a message then waited with a smirk. The response came quick enough. Hey, Broski. What are you doing? Broski. Jackie's expression fell as he cringed slightly.
You still haven't changed my name back? he sent back.
Well have you changed mine? Of course he didn't. Jackie was the one who started it no way was he going to back down first. Even so he lied and told her of course. Proof or it didn't happen.
I have nothing to prove.
Then I'm calling you a liar. Amusement was evident on Jackie's face. Though after reading the next message, it gradually disappeared. So what movie did you guys watch today? When he didn't answer another text came in. Jackie? You good? What's up?
Jackie shook his head. No sorry. I'm good. Just... distracted. The longer it went without a response, the longer Jackie wondered if maybe he should have just said what movie instead of what he'd actually said.
Do you want to talk? … You want me to see if Mara or mom are up? Jackie hesitated, unsure what to say. Maybe he should. It wasn't really something that had been talked about recently. But it would feel dumb talking about it because of a movie. Movies aren't a reliable source. Not about this stuff anyway. He jumped when his phone suddenly started going off. Jackie barely managed a 'hey' before she started talking. “Jackie what's wrong? It's really weird when you're all out of it like this. Did something happen?”
“Sissy,” Jackie started, trying to lighten the mood.
“Stop. I'm serious. Did something happen? Do I need to rally the family?”
Jackie actually laughed at that last bit. “No, nothing happened. I promise,” he reassured her. “I think...” he paused and it was quiet as he thought for a moment. “I think I'm just a little on edge.”
“Why? What's up?”
He sighed. “I don't know. I... Our temporary guest is kinda weird.” He heard her laugh. “Come on, it's not funny.”
“Really? With our family life you think someone else is weird? Have you tried to get to know them even a little?”
“Henrik told me the same thing. About trying to get to know him I mean.”
“Yeah, well, us mediciney types think the same way.”
Jackie snorted. “Yeah, no. I don't believe that for a second.”
“Okay, that's fair.” There was a pause then she continued. “Okay, how about this. Challenge him to a round of Mario Kart. You learn a lot from competitive video gaming.”
Video games are pretty neutral and he's seen him play some already. “... I guess I could try that.” Though he still couldn't help feel a little unnerved.
“That's the spirit! Now I need to know when you're going to challenge him so I can watch you lose.”
“You're not even gonna root for me? Sissy, I feel betrayed.”
“Call me that again and I'm gonna hang up on you.”
“What are you going to do then?” Talking to his sister was always enjoyable. She was so easy to goof-around with.
“Probably go to sleep.” Jackie could hear her trying to hide a yawn.
Though it was pushing his luck, he said, “But that's boring, Sissy, talk to me more.” It was quiet on her end. Jackie pulled his phone back and glanced at it and found that she indeed hung up. Well, that was rude.
I told you I was gonna hang up on you. … Why don't you go to sleep like the rest of us normal people. She had a point. He could probably go to sleep. Except he wasn't really tired. Mister don't need no sleep.
Jackie sighed. Fine. I'll let you go to sleep.
Thank you :) He couldn't help the smile as it came to his lips. They really had to find more time to physically hang out. Now that he was going to be graduating soon, they should be able to. But, whose to say. She did still have college to go to herself.
Getting up, Jackie set his phone down then changed into some pajama pants and a loose fitting t-shirt. After finding a pair of ear-buds in his backpack, he settled himself back down on his bed. With his charger on the end-table at the end of his bed he was set with not having to get up for awhile.

Apprentice April Asks #1 Azalea/Imalia
Here are my answers to my Apprentice April Asks #1.  Thanks so very much to @leis-main-blog and @verysoftthings for sending me asks!  I honestly wasn’t expecting it.  ^^;  I tend to write books about these two, so I made a separate post.
1. The Basics.  What is your character's name?  How old are they?  How tall are they?  Skin color?  Eye color?  Hair color?  Gender identification?
Azalea Larinya Nevra.  30, female. 5'6"; medium skin tone; eyes blue with gold around the pupils; hair aqua to coral ombre; medium length
Tumblr media
Imalia Vilyana Gabriev. 36, female. 5'10"; fair skin tone; eyes crimson; hair brown with burgundy ends; very long (art by @carowhitewolf)
Tumblr media
2.  Love Interest.  Who does your character love?  What attracted them to that particular LI?
Tumblr media
Julian/Lucio (different universes).
Julian - she loved how kind he was, and she adored his bumbling.  She was compelled to help him because his cause was right.  He couldn't be guilty, he was too much of a good man.  She really wanted to help him with his own inner demons as well because he didn't deserve to suffer, even at his own hand.  That glorious chest didn't help either, lol.
Lucio - she thought he was overall adorable.  Yeah, he was hot as hell, but it was his personality that got her heart thumping.  He really was brave and skilled, and she had a feeling that not many others had appreciated it much.  Yeah, he had done some horrendous things; but Azalea could see the actual changes happening in him and she knew that he had hope.
Tumblr media
Asra.  She had known Asra since she was 15 and he was 8.  They had a good 20 year friendship and she knew him very well.  She fell for him when that friendship veil lifted after the events of The Arcana story and she finally really noticed how beautiful he was.  "He's smart, kind, talented, awesome...AND hot?!  THE WHOLE PACKAGE?!  I'm such an idiot..."
3. Familiar.  Does your character have a familiar?  How did they meet?
Tumblr media
Corva, a white raven.  She met Corva when Malak led her to an alley where Corva was lying on the ground with a broken wing.  Azalea nursed Corva back to health, and Corva refused to ever leave. (image c. Mike Yip)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Balthazaar, a phoenix.  Balthazaar was one of the phoenixes in the magical menagerie at the University of Prakra.  He was ornery, and the handlers had a hard time with him.  Imalia liked how stubborn he was and over time developed a rapport and closeness with him.  The university allowed her to claim him as her familiar and take him home. (image c. Kiss Clip Art)
Tumblr media
4. Hobbies.  What kinds of things does your character like to do for fun?
Tumblr media
Parquor.  She loves running around, slipping up buildings, jumping over rooftops and sliding down poles.  XD  She's a very high-energy person and parquor keeps her healthy and mentally sharp.  She also enjoys writing.  She will write on just about anything that has her attention at the moment.  Magical theory is one of her favorite subjects, but she does enjoy writing fiction.
Tumblr media
Her hobby...is harassing bandits.  She gets perverse joy out of robbing robbers blind.  If she can find the original owners of things that were stolen...awesome.  If not...hey, this is an ancient Drakrian fertility statue!  I'm gonna put this on my shelf at home.  Oh, and leaving off-color messages in ancient languages in ruins.  "Here I sit all broken-hearted..."
5. Hidden talents.  Is there something neat that your character can do?  Tie a cherry stem into a knot with their tongue?  Say any word backwards perfectly?
Tumblr media
Azalea is kinda like Sherlock Holmes.  She can look at a person and form their entire story in her mind.  She never uses it against someone; she just uses it to be more friendly.  But if you're annoying her and won't go away...she will scare you with what she has figured out about you.
Tumblr media
Imalia secretly loves to sing and isn't terrible at it.  She's one of those people who will sing in the bath, and if someone mentions it, she acts like it didn't happen.
6. Magical talents.  Is there a specific type of magic that your character excels at?  Any magic they aren't so great at?  Or do they actually shy away from magic altogether?
Tumblr media
Lightning.  She's good at conducting the currents and utilizing its explosive capabilities.  She also uses lightning as a personal shield while in battle.  She is also really good at enchanting things; like her hair.  She makes enchanted dreamcatchers that actually catch nightmares.  Both Julian and Lucio appreciate this ability.  (Lucio's dreamcatcher needs to be cleansed more often than Julian's)
Tumblr media
Fire and Darkness.  Imalia is in tune with fire and is extremely good at using it to its fullest potential; absolute destruction.  As for the darkness...that will be explained in number 12.
7. Interaction.  How does your character typically interact with people?
Tumblr media
She is very polite, but not overly so.  She tries to come off as someone you can actually have a conversation with.  Sometimes if she's feeling nervous, she will go into overly-polite mode, but if the vibe starts to feel calmer, she will loosen up.  She is very energetic and sometimes hyper with her friends.
Tumblr media
She is ingratiating and very proper until you piss her off.  Then you get things like "Why don't you get a horse, move up to the mountains, and don't bother anybody?  You have the personality of a dead moth." (RIP Don Rickles)  With friends, she's very laid back and frank with what she says.
8. Romance.  What is something that your character and their LI love to do together?  How do they show affection?
Tumblr media
Azalea x Julian - They LOVE to read together.  They have spent hours cuddled up together over a good book.  Azalea shows Julian affection with gentle touches, kisses, and koala hugs.  (she really loves how tall he is)  She also makes sure he eats and gets plenty of rest.  More than once, she has brought him dinner to his clinic while he was working late.
Azalea x Lucio - They love to spar.  They are so different in fighting style that sparring really helps them improve their skills.  Also, the prize at the end for the winner is quite nice.  ^_~  Azalea shows Lucio affection by listening to him and holding him.  She also likes to try to out kiss him.  He reaches for her hand, she spins away and plants two on his cheek instead.
Tumblr media
Imalia and Asra love to travel the Magical Realms together.  They get into really long and in-depth conversations about the things they see and experiment with how their willpower affects the realm around them.  Imalia shows affection by constant words of praise and sneaky touches and kisses.  The more she can surprise him, the better.  She also keeps a hefty supply of Lapsang Souchong tea at her estate for him and loves giving him little trinkets and things she has found on her travels.
9. Travel.  Does your character like to travel outside of Vesuvia?  How often?  For how long?  What kinds of things do they do away from home?
Tumblr media
Yes.  She loves to see more of the world and meet new people and see different cultures.  She will travel maybe once every year or two.  When traveling, she will typically stay away for 1-2 months.  She loves adventure, but she does love her home more.  Azalea loves to learn new types of magic or new methods of spellcasting from different cultures.  She finds that certain techniques make her own magic stronger.
Tumblr media
Definitely.  She herself is originally from the northern hemisphere, so travel isn't something new to her.  She gets wanderlust sometimes and has to get out into the world.  She will be gone typically for six months when she decides to travel.  She has been gone for three years before.  She HAS to investigate old ruins wherever she goes.  Who knows that treasures or knowledge lay inside?  She must find out!
10. WTF.  Has anything just...weird ever happened to your character?  Something that made them stop and go "What just happened?!"
Tumblr media
She was trying to brew a potion that would allow the drinker to become a mermaid for a short while.  She ended up spilling it on a plant before it was done.  The plant sprouted tiny muscular hairy legs and arms, stood up, walked to the window, shook its fist at her, and jumped out.  Turns out she had forgotten a key ingredient in the early stages of brewing the potion.  Mazelinka made fun of her for a solid week.
Tumblr media
One time, she and a rival mage were about to have a battle.  Right before they were to begin, this strange fellow wearing a sentient red cape fell from the sky and landed in between them.  He promptly stood to his feet, apologized for the intrusion, and left.  (Yes...I do mean Doctor Strange fell from the sky)
11. Crime.  Has your character ever been arrested?  If so, what did they do?  Have they ever helped stop a crime?
Tumblr media
She has never been arrested, however, she is guilty of petty larceny.  It's not something she does often...just when some jerk needs to be taught a lesson.  They always get their stuff back, but she will make sure they are thoroughly inconvenienced.  She has stopped another thief before.  The thief took the purse of an elderly individual who was trying to buy food.  Azalea scaled up to the rooftops and cut the thief off, holding him down until the guards caught up and arrested him.  She gave the money back to its owner.
Tumblr media
Yep.  She's been arrested plenty of times.  Usually for assault and/or destruction of property.  Hey, that jerk deserved to have his carriage set on fire.  She has stopped several assassination attempts on her cousin, Queen Dreen Suval of Seiruun.  She has also stopped dark plots at the Magical University in Prakra.
12. Secrets.  What is a secret your character has?  Are they in line for the throne in a far off land?  Was there this one time at band camp...?  Are they secretly involved in an assassin's guild?
Tumblr media
Azalea secretly writes smut.  She loves it.  And her actual hair color is gray.  The aqua-coral is an enchantment.
Tumblr media
Imalia actually is in line for the throne of Seiruun; second in line, to be exact.  But she HATES this.  It's why she continues to live in Vesuvia rather than her home country.  Imalia is also no longer entirely human.  During an adventure that went terribly wrong, she summoned the Lord of Nightmares while inside the Magical Realms.  (The Lord of Nightmares or "Lon" is an eldritch goddess) Lon then proceeded to implant herself inside Imalia.  Lon is a being of pure darkness and nightmare, so Imalia has control over darkness when she taps into Lon's power. Through some creative wording, the contract between the two of them allows Imalia to use Lon's power and form when she needs to; however, Imalia is forever plagued by terrible nightmares that not even Azalea's dreamcatchers can stop.  The dreamcatchers just catch on fire.
13. Overcompensation.  Is there something that your character just HAS to do better than anyone else?  Or are they just that dang good without trying?  If they see someone else showing off, what is their kneejerk reaction?
Tumblr media
She's actually quite humble.  If she sees someone showing off, she really just concerns herself with their safety.  "Please don't be careless and die, please!"  But she IS gifted.  Her magic is insanely strong, she just doesn't like to make a big deal out of it.  She gets embarrassed.
Tumblr media
She is the best in the room, and you'd better damn well know it.  Unless she respects you.  Then she will tone it down.  But if she sees a showoff...she's got to mess with them.  She's got to show them that they aren't all that and a bag of chips.
14. Fight Club.  Is your character a good fighter?  What kind of skills do they have?
Tumblr media
She's pretty decent.  Her attack magic is awesome, but her physical fighting mainly relies on how quick and squirmy she is.  Her punches hurt, but they don't incapacitate.
Tumblr media
She can fight pretty damn well.  Her father made sure of it after most of her family was killed by assassins (it does sometimes really suck to be royalty).  She is a heavy hitter and her intent is to end a fight with one strike.  It doesn't always work, but hey...second, third, maybe fourth time is the charm.  Or maybe you should just blow it the hell up.
15. The Arts.  Is your character a creative type?  What kinds of things can they create?  Can they act?  Street perform?
Tumblr media
She is.  Like mentioned earlier, she writes and makes dreamcatchers; she also gets into stage acting with Julian (when he's her LI).  She's not a solo performer though.  She has to be in a troupe or else she gets massive stage fright.
Tumblr media
She can draw very well, almost photo-realistically.  She mainly uses this skill for documentation when she's studying something.  But every great once in a while she will draw a political cartoon making fun of some noble.  Once she drew a penis on the face of one of Lucio's statues.  He snapped back "I'd never put something that small in my mouth!"  She retorted by drawing a full body penis on a different statue.  It got misinterpreted by many townspeople as "Hey, look!  Lucio is a dick!!"
16. Goofy.  Is your character a clown?  Do they like to make people laugh?
Tumblr media
She does.  She doesn't see herself as funny, but when she slips in something humorous into whatever she's talking about it usually takes whoever is listening by surprise.  Spit your drink kind of humor.
Tumblr media
YES.  She has such a strange way of speaking sometimes that you can't help but snort at the things she says.  Yes, it is entirely on purpose.  She loves to crack jokes and has a self-deprecating sense of humor at times.  She will also be hilariously over-confident as well.
17. Language.  Is your character multilingual?  How many languages do they speak?  Do they have an accent?  Is it sexy?  Is it silly?  Do they have the multilingual lisp?
Tumblr media
No.  She only speaks her native language.
Tumblr media
Yes.  Imalia speaks ten different languages.  In her normal language, she doesn't have a multilingual lisp; but in about four of her other languages, she does.  It drives her nuts, but she just can't seem to fix it.
18. Embarrassment.  What is something really embarrassing that your character has done/said?
Tumblr media
Azalea can't remember this, because it's part of the memories she lost.  But Imalia remembers.  One time she was going to meet one of the magisters of the Magical University of Prakra to see if she would be accepted.  She spent weeks preparing how to introduce herself.  On the day of, she mentioned how excited she was to meet Magister Asshole.  Imalia blinked and said, "It's pronounced Ah-shole."
Tumblr media
One time she said something quite rude about Lucio in front of Azalea (when Lucio is Azalea's LI).  Azalea proceeded to tear her a new rectum, claiming that for someone so smart, she was incredibly closed-minded.
19. Memory.  Has your character gotten any of their memory back?  If so, what?  Did it change them?
Tumblr media
No.  She insists that she doesn't want her memories back because she likes who she is now.  She gets the important information from Asra and Imalia...her parents’ and aunt's names, what they were like, and how they died.  That's all she feels that she needs.
Tumblr media
*looks at me*  "I'm exempt from this question.  I'm your OC, not your MC."  *walks out*
20. Family.  Talk about your character's family.  Who were they?
Tumblr media
Her mother (Etoile) and father (Galen) were traveling merchants.  Her mother was the one with magical talent.  Her mother's sister (Sylvaine) owned the shop and taught Azalea most about magic.  When Azalea was 13, her parents were robbed and killed by bandits just outside of Vesuvia.  She lived with Sylvaine until she died of pneumonia when Azalea was 20.
Tumblr media
Imalia's father was Vitalric Gabriev and her mother was Narsial Trevallan.  When Imalia was 14, her father's family (the Sairuun royal family) were murdered by assassins sent by a rival country.  Only Vitalric (and Narsial), Imalia, Vitalric's older brother Rhemun and his daughter Dreen survived.  Rhemun and Dreen remained in Seiruun to run the place while Vitalric and his family moved to Vesuvia as a failsafe in case there were other assassination attempts.  Vitalric started studying to become a doctor, while Narsial started grooming Imalia to wed into a noble family.  Narsial was extremely abusive.  Long story short, King Rhemun died of a hunting injury, and both of Imalia's parents died in the Red Plague.

eeeee I’m very happy that a dead Cas is now officially chuck's ideal ending. (Kind of? I mean,,,, he told Sam that what he showed him is what would happen if TFW won, but it was still the ending *Chuck* has been wanting.) either way! It’s now textually part of the What We Absolutely Can’t Let Happen package!
Lol, I mean, a dead Sam and Dean are officially part of Chuck’s ideal ending, so it’s kinda like... if Chuck is targeting you like that, if he specifically and horrifically wants you off the table that bad because he knows that with you alive then his plans fall apart... yeah...
Tumblr media
Which, honestly... explains an awful lot why Chuck’s spent so much effort keeping Cas busy with other stuff in the past. I’m entirely rethinking s6 and s7 here, because this explains so much. It’s not that Cas was being controlled by anyone, but after 5.22, Cas... poked at things. He let (half of, anyway) Sam out of the cage, he stood up to Raphael who was scheduled to finish the apocalypse, and then he teamed up with Crowley to hoover all the souls out of Purgatory.
I mean Chuck was probably giddy with anticipation over the leviathan getting freed, you know? He didn’t even have to interfere to bring on his monster apocalypse. Just sit back and watch the chaos. He didn’t even mind Death nudging Dean in the right direction a few times, because Dean was so busy with his own immediate problems he couldn’t figure out Death’s hints in time to stop Cas anyway... And then Cas inadvertently and conveniently cleared himself off the table once the monsters were free. And yet... something about this wasn’t entirely satisfying, and Cas was brought back without his memories and stashed away to what... to give Dean a bit of hope that Chuck could just dash again? Because then Cas stashed himself away AGAIN after fixing Sam and taking on the trauma that was killing him, and then stashed himself in Purgatory for a while before coming back as an unwitting pawn of Heaven.
I think Chuck enjoys watching Cas go through this over and over again.
“Punishment resurrection.”
But s15 TFW isn’t the same fractured and scattered TFW from s6. They know Chuck’s God. And they know he’s the antagonist who keeps pushing them through more and more horrific versions of his own ugly story.
Billie is not OG Death, and she’s willing to bide her time and plan.
Sam is not soulless. He’s been through all of this before, and he’s endured, and he’s gonna endure again. He may have had his hope shaken a bit, but I don’t think that’s something Chuck can actually take from him entirely. As long as he’s alive, there’s a chance.
Dean is not the grieving, out of the loop shell of himself he was in s6. He knows what’s going on now, even if everything seems kinda bleak... He’s already established that in addition to Sam (who’s not in hell or soulless now), he also needs Cas in his life, even if it’s just the two of them sitting at the table commiserating.
And Cas... finally understands that Dean wants him to stay, needs him to stay, and that every time Dean has told him this before (even if it was worded differently, because Dean struggles to express himself directly) Cas had left anyway-- for Dean’s own safety, to shield Dean from having to do something terrible, to sacrifice himself so Dean wouldn’t have to-- Dean didn’t care because all he could see was I asked him to stay and he left anyway. I am not enough. I am not worth staying for. And now in Purgatory, they finally began to have that conversation. Cas got a win for Dean, a year worth of s8 prayers that Cas had heard have been condensed into a single prayer that finally brought them together instead of convincing Cas he needed to keep running away to protect Dean. Instead of shoving Dean through the portal and staying behind, Cas waited at the portal for Dean and they walked back through together. Almost like ALL of the things that have been haunting Cas and driving him to penance since s6 have at least begun to be addressed and resolved in s15.
What were we talking about at the top of this? I think I’ve gone off on a tangent again...
RIGHT! Chuck’s gotta nerf Cas for his plot to work out.
It’s wild, right? Because Chuck’s whole “This Is Your Future Life” episode he crafted to convince Sam that locking him away with a Mark is a terrible idea that can only end one way... Do you know how frustrating it must’ve been for Chuck to have to stop them from caging him? Because it was a double-edged sword. I mean, on the one hand, I’m sure he LOVED the idea of Cas slowly going mad with the Mark until Dean was compelled to lock him in a ma’lak box and bury him right along with his hope and happiness, but if they had succeeded in casting that spell, then CHUCK WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN ABLE TO WATCH HIS FAVORITE SHOW. Like Amara in that same cage, his fun would’ve been over.
Can’t watch all the suffering if you’re locked in a cosmic dungeon!
It’s incredibly funny to me that Chuck convinced Sam that his nonsensical “future” was a true seeing, that he “shared his omniscience” with Sam with that watch. Because the one thing the show has demonstrated over the years that Chuck sincerely hopes they’ve forgotten, is that you can’t change the past, but the future is never set in stone until it comes to pass. And the future is built on choices.
Chuck can account for a lot of things, but he can’t account for Free Will. He can nudge, he can remove options, he can create roadblocks leaving only terrible choices open to them that will have awful consequences or require painful sacrifices, but... TFW has never completely done what they’re told, you know? Cas is the original “spanner in the works,” and Edlund once commented that yes, he has a “crack in his chassis,” but it’s a crack through which great things come. But Sam and Dean also have this frustrating and fascinating gift to stymie Chuck’s plot.
And this is the true power of TFW. I think this is the tool they need to fully understand for themselves in order to finally win. They’ve been edging around it for a while, but Chuck always finds some way to foil them when they start getting close to examining their own wants. Like every time Dean starts talking about being able to take a vacation, or feeling hopeful that the future looks a little less bloodsoaked for them, Chuck steps in and throws them a monster of a curveball. Last time Dean started up with the toes-in-the-sand talk, he’d been possessed by AU Michael by the end of the episode, and crushed like a bug, his free will rendered entirely irrelevant. No amount of fighting against Michael, of telling him to get out, was able to free him. And then Chuck showed up again to hammer the lesson home. Only they learned a different lesson from the one he was trying to teach.
Heck, that’s another frustrating thing for Chuck, isn’t it? TFW has a long, long history of doing that.
Dabb even tweeted lyrics from “The End” by the Doors before this episode aired. Because this was a 5.04 redux, in a lot of ways. The circumstances of the future that Chuck imagined to horrify Sam may be entirely different, but the premise, the themes, the structure of it all... it’s functionally identical. But that was a distraction of sorts, as well. The other episode this referred back to... was 9.18.
Metatron showed his hand, revealed his process, and it’s identical to Chuck’s, because Metatron was just playing God, in the exact same way Chuck always did. He was a writer.
CASTIEL: And you did all this to make me a hero?METATRON [laughing]: Ah, that's priceless. Um no. You are not the hero in this mess-terpiece. You are the villain. I'm the hero.
and
METATRON: Didn't quite turn out as I'd planned, but that is why we rewrite. That was God's problem, you know... he published the first draft. You got to keep at it till you get all your ducks in a row.GADREEL: Was the Winchesters grabbing me part of your plan?METATRON: That was a surprise. But, hey, what writer doesn't love a good twist? My job is to set up interesting characters and see where they lead me. The by-product of having well-drawn characters is...They may surprise you. But I know something they don't know...the ending. How I get there doesn't matter as long as everybody plays their part.
Chuck also thinks he knows the ending. He’s absolutely convinced-- a la Lucifer’s conviction in 5.04 that “no matter what choices you make, we’ll always end up here,” and Metatron’s conviction that the ending was always destined to happen, couldn’t account for the true nature of humanity. Lucifer never saw it, because he never bothered to look for it. Metatron only saw it after he’d been rendered human himself. And Chuck? He thinks he understands, that his “omniscience” gives him a complete understanding of his creation, and yet... there’s things that humanity has created that he could never have dreamed up for himself.
He was right back in 11.22 (oh, hello Bobo episode again) when he told Amara that creation needed to be born, that it became something better than them. And yet Chuck can’t stop inflicting his own tired, formulaic story on his favorite characters. Because Amara was also right about him, that he was also greedy, and selfish, and only wanted to feel “big.” Chuck admitted that to Becky in 15.04, until he got over his writer’s block and started writing with a vengeance.
Wait, what was this about again? *scrolls up*
OH! Right! Nerfing Cas so the writer can have his way with everyone else. Kind of a long-standing tactic, no? And it’s not even about limiting Cas’s angel powers, but about Cas himself, and what he means to TFW. And it’s taken Cas a VERY long time to even begin to understand this. It’s not what he can do for them, it’s not being “useful” or “powerful” or being able to wave a hand and whoosh away the bad guy. It’s about him being HIM. It’s about him standing up to Dean and telling him he’s being stupid, and Dean listening and following him when if they’d gone their separate ways they both probably would’ve failed in Purgatory. It’s about them having each other’s backs and anticipating each other’s needs, and knowing that they aren’t alone and are wanted and needed because they are the best friend the other has ever had. And there’s something to that very human connection, that very human concept of family and love that Chuck... is incapable of understanding.
Whenever love rears its ugly head, Chuck rushes in to crush it. Because in love lies hope, lies a power that he can’t beat down. It’s a plot twist he can’t write his way out of.
Amara tried to give the very beginning of that to Dean in 11.23, to give him a chance to understand Mary, and Chuck couldn’t abide it. Jack is too powerful in a mojo-way, sure, but his true power for all of TFW was love. And Rowena-- pushed into self-sacrifice after Chuck “pinataed Hell”-- her entire journey into TFW had been about love.
Remember the plot of Metatron’s narrative? Love, and heartbreak, and love? Yeah. Remember how he thought he defeated Cas? By killing Dean Winchester? Yeah.
Big picture themes time? Chuck tried to drive wedges between TFW and everything they love. And has been trying to force his own contrived romance plots on them. But Chuck doesn’t understand love at all.
That’s their one true weapon against Chuck, if they each can learn to wield it.
How did my intended lol response to your question turn into this? That’s the cosmic lol for you.

HS^2 bloggin’ Patreon Commentary Catchup 2020-03-29
I know I’ve been sitting on half-a-dozen asks, but I’m gonna sit on those a little longer because after I’m done catching up on ALL the commentary I’ve missed I’ll probably be a little exhausted.
First the commentary on Chapter 5: YOUR 3Y3S H4V3 B33N CLOS3D.  I skimmed this before, just so I could leave a comment about what I’d been told about the suicide feeling / Jaspers funeral when she was “eight” being way too late on the timeline.  They still haven’t made any corrections to that HS^2 page.  Hm.  Are they just feeling the general vibe and tags to help the fandom guide things?  I’m wondering if anyone came to any of them specifically with that, since Patreon commentary doesn’t seem to cut it.  (Which I might be grateful for, from another point of view, because why would they favor paid methods.)
Sketches and Commentary: Chapter 5, "YOUR 3Y3S H4V3 B33N CLOS3D"
Starting commentary on why they played with the medium by opting for a Longpage with that update.  Unsurprising and understandable~
Ooh, they included the commission/sketch instructions for the image they asked from Xam.
I don't know what we did to deserve Xamag.
Yeah few people dispute Xamag’s awesomeness.~
Much of this conversation was written before they launched HS^2′s first chapter, huh?
With the "primary" version of its original protagonist dead in a wallet,
Did... did Terezi or someone else put John’s body in his wallet after he died?  I forget.  *checks back*
(Meat 35) That’s definitely a fair question. But I have one that’s much more important for her to answer. Terezi, are you seriously just going to leave the body here? “TEREZI: HUH?” Of course not. Terezi’s a practical girl, after all. She digs the wallet out of her blood-stained pants, and captchas the corpse. She holds it close to her heart, like a secret. Like John’s stupid last words: a confession whispered for her and no one else. And then she starts walking home.
(Meat 36) Terezi’s jaw tightens. She’s not ready to hear any words that remind her of those few hours with John. Her hand goes to her pocket, where she’s keeping the wallet. She traces the contours of it with her thumb and forces a smile.
[...] Here we both are. It’s a beautiful day. You’ve got your dead boyfriend in your wallet. And we’ve already managed to strike such a nice metatextual rapport. So hear me out. [...]  I ease the throttle back a bit, just enough so that I’m not whispering directly into her ear when she slips the wallet out of her pocket. She clutches it so hard in her palm that she’s digging dents into the leather, and bites her lip.
God damnit, that was an important fucking thing for me to forget.  I hope she preserved his corpse in a better way than just “wallet”.  And why the FUCK did Dirk think it was so important to bring him???? That’s not good, is it.
Back to the commentary, going to how the Dirk crew’s conversations especially cover the meta question of why continue the story at all...
This is actually a similar question to one explored by a series that shares a lot of Homestuck's creative DNA, Steven Universe.
Oh god damnit, what timing, huh?  And then they go on about what constitutes a happy ending and what’s supposed to happen after, how work might not be done, et cetera.  Hopefully these authors take a page from how SU:F finished, because Steven Universe managed to pull it back to uplifting pretty well.
These are two dangerous women, confined together long enough to learn all of each others' weaknesses, and sharp-edged enough to exploit them.
True enough.
Dirk, unfortunately, cucks the audience from seeing the scene's "true resolution." What an asshole. I've never been madder at this guy than I am right now. I bet he didn't even provide a warranty.
Pff.
On to the next commentary:
Sketches and Commentary: Catnapped, Part Three
Catnapped is some of the most fun I’ve had while writing, because Jasprose is just so goddamn fun. Cats don’t plan, they live in the moment. She’s always existing in that moment of pushing a glass off the table.
We can all agree with that I think.
Plenty they talk about here, but I’ll just quote part of anything about characterization...
First, I actually really appreciate getting a lot at Jane's genuine sympathy for Dirk here. There was quite a bit of mutual fondness and care between the two of them – but, at the same time, they enabled each others' worst tendencies.
Hm!
Swifer remains the closest thing to a "straight man" this story has. (Not in the sexuality way. In the comedy way.)
Yep.
There was no universe where we left this story without Jasprose saying "owo what's this". You know it, I know it.
Jesus Christ, I didn’t catch that.
God, Problem Sleuth just has the worst commuting luck. He should put some of his rug money into a permanent locksmith. Checking back in with these scenes is always a delight. It probably took PS like two hundred off-screen panels to get to this point. Miserable.
Wait, that’s right, Catnapped 28 is shown before DDD 12, but AFTER Dad is shown marching up handcuffed in Catnapped 26.  And yet in DDD 12, Dad and DD come fetch PS from out of his office, when the handcuffed thing hasn’t happened yet in DDD.  You can’t DO that, authors!  It only makes RELEASE ORDER sense, not any sort of OTHER sense?  What about when people come to catch up or read this later!  Come on, that’s sloppy.  Unless they’re going to leave PS behind to stay trapped in his office MORE, which I wouldn’t put past them.  (But, wouldn’t make sense since the bullethole from C28 is already there in DDD12.)  Andrew knew more of how to be responsible telling an out-of-time-sync story, believe it or not.
Commentary ends with a few sketches, like Jasprose doing a The Mask impression, appropriately.
Sketches and Commentary: Chapter 6, "A Conversation Regarding Relevance"
Oh, it’s Jade time.
On alt!Callie’s starting Space rant:
I wanted to impress on everyone just how vast it is, and also to remind the audience that alt!callie has them at the same mercy that Dirk does. She can force us to listen to her pontificate endlessly if she so chooses. She’s slightly less insufferable than Dirk, if only perhaps because her text isn’t orange.
Yep, mostly.
So here she is. Jade. We find out that not only is she conscious inside her own head, she is also incredibly chatty. And not too thrilled with her current situation. I know most of the audience isn’t either, considering the fact that Jade having no agency has basically become a meme at this point.
NEVER. AGAIN. PLZ.
As Callie told us in the beginning of the chapter, it isn’t natural for people to behave like narrative devices. Even within her own thematic framework, Callie has a habit of defaulting to behaving like a person after all.
Even alt!Callie still became a story nerd, not just original Callie -- she just became a different, more insufferable type of story nerd.
Plenty more discussion I don’t need to touch on...  keep in mind I’m omitting large parts of this in most cases, again, to respect the paywall.
A remark on Dave and Karkat being two emotionally-constipated early-twenties Bernie Bros, which... I mean.  Fair.
She definitely does love them, and she wanted to be with them, but also...Jade has a lot of other prospects. She’s actually the one character who seems to be enjoying her time on Earth c. Hitting up interspecies raves and getting around. We just haven’t seen any of that because none of those other people she boned are main characters.
Maybe that’s why alt!Callie was so blind and dismissive of it?  Offscreen experience being less in the Light, therefore less relevant to her, even though that’s the exact attitude she’s ostensibly at war with?
Anyway Jade’s consciousness is huge.
Yep.
It’s been a while since we’ve had any sort of serious meta talk about classpects. Mostly because there’s really no use for classpects outside of the game, unless, for instance, you go around referring to everyone as the Prince or the Witch because you are a dramatic alien in a hood. It does make sense that a Witch’s powers would be more useful than a Sylph’s to a Muse.
Aaaand that’s all the classpect mention we’re gonna get isn’t it? ;P
(Yes I know, the author told us to dial it back.  They ARE going ahead and prepping to answer some outstanding questions, though.)
Honestly, the Jade Situation is a tough one. To be sure, she has been sacrificed to the plot again and again, something that probably began as a coincidence and then later grew into a theme. Space players are destined to be huge, cosmic forces in the universe. Big movers. [...] But usually when we hear the story of big, god-like beings, we don’t think about the personalities behind them. What was it like for god to create the universe? Was he lonely? Did he regret it? Did he wish he could live in it instead?
And Jade WAS too powerful not to sideline, by a certain point in the plot.  And before that, maybe trapped in a bit of a character arc where she had to get over some notions to step into the action.
I actually think Jade could have been okay with this. With being A Force For The Narrative. [...] But then Callie makes it personal.
Agreed.  If alt!Callie hadn’t been so shitty about it in general, they could have worked things out more meaningfully; but the immense resolve and effort it took to dominate Caliborn in her origin timeline has tainted her perception ALMOST as bad as Dirk’s.  Much of HS^2 is probably going to involve her gradually learning how to get over that in the background, the balance she needs to take ala the Ultimate Riddle’s lesson.
(Tangentially... it was said that it would have been nearly impossible to make alt!Callie dominate, even across ALL timelines.  What if alt!Callie had her timeline’s origin explained in HS^2 by a Third Scratch at this late date with the likes of Davebot running around to do it???  That would probably make me fucking mad.)
Back to the commentary.
Admittedly these last few chapters have definitely been “girls beating the crap out of each other” heavy, and I hope that’s okay.
PFFFFF
Callie and Jade aren’t really sure who makes a decision on what is considered “just” or “heroic”. Plot twist, it’s us. We do. But also the alpha timeline does.
Hmm.
More gorgeous Xam art. Initially we were going to make it more ambiguous whether or not she actually ate the peanut butter, but we decided to have it be a decisive moment of triumph.
Really?  Well, you could have made it visually clearer that the candy dropped.  A lot of people visually missed that.  This is a consequence of the back-and-forth artist-isnt-the-author art-commissioning going on, in part... Andrew was MUCH better at conveying what he wanted to convey BETWEEN panels than this crew, like comic book panels and their composition together; you can see that when comparing Homestuck proper’s sprite animation to that of fan adventures that used sprites, for instance.  These guys are at something of a disadvantage due to their disconnect.
Commentary on the Commentary
This commentary uses "she/her" to talk about the alternate Calliope possessing Jade, while the "other" Callie (remember them?) uses they/them. This other Calliope, presumably, has a much different relationship with her gender – and her brother – than the Callie we saw discussing the subject with Roxy and John. One of my favorite things about this update (I can say that, because I'm a second person who didn't write it) was that subtle hint about how different her Caliborn must have been to allow her to predominate in the first place. I'd be really interested in fan works exploring more about her (and his) past.
Hhhhmmmmmmm.
Not sure what else to say to that, but it does make me hmmm.
Sketches and Commentary: Diamonds, Dames, and Dads, Part 1
Probably not much plot-relevant here...
Oh pff.
They had full drawings of them going in for the kiss on standby.  They couldn’t resist making them.
Real talk, I have been looking forward to writing this story the most out of any other part of HS^2. Finally I get to combine my passions. Cheesy noir bullshit and old men making eyes at each other.
Pfffffff.  Yes.
...the next three or four pages of this writing go on to describe how sexy this is and these characters and setting are.  I can’t fault a word of any of it.
The dream team is assembled. Nothing can possibly go wrong.
Wow, I caught up on all this commentary quick.  See you next time.

Lin/Playa Headcanons
This has been a top priority post since I made this blog believe it or not. This will also be specifically a female Playa/Boss character because I personally headcanon Lin as a lesbian
This post also goes out to @syndicateau because wlw Lin rights
Lin had pretty low expectations of The Playa when they first met, she shared Johnny’s opinion of the new girl. Doesn’t look like much and a little bummed out she got stuck babysitting the new girl instead of working with a more experienced Saint
That being said, Lin was however relieved that the new kid was a girl. There’s not many in the Saints at the time and Lin was getting real sick of some of these asshole dudes and their gross comments so The Playa is a breath of fresh air, even though they’re pretty quiet most of the time
Lin was pretty quickly impressed with The Playa. She was efficient, skilled, and followed Lin’s plans, never tried to outshine her or do her own thing because she thinks her plan is better than Lin’s or some crap
And even when The Playa went off the plan, it actually helped the plan instead of just derailing it and putting them back at square one
Not to mention she was also pretty cute and Lin certainly wasn’t going to complain about working with someone easy on the eyes
Lin was also one of the first people in the Saints to hear The Playa talk
She made some witty comment when they were scoping out Donnie’s garage and it took Lin a moment to process it was The Playa who said something next to her
Lin tried to coax more out of the girl be joking how she didn’t know she could even talk but she’s met with more silence and a shrug
She doesn’t have an explanation for replaying that dumb joke The Playa made in her head and ruining her focus after that
It wasn’t even that funny, what the hell
After that, Lin tries to get The Playa to talk more in various different ways. She says it’s just to prove she’s not crazy and that the girl definitely can talk, but in actuality she just liked their voice and wants to hear it more. And the fact that she could in theory have Actual Conversations with her and make excuses to talk to her more was a Big plus for Lin
Her “plans” to get The Playa to talk consist of just leaving extended pauses between certain sentences when she’s talking about her plans to leave her a chance to speak up. And also of directly asking her random questions when they’re hanging out that aren’t as simple as yes or no
The questions plan works a few times. Asking why she’s in the Saints or trying to ask anything about her past really will usually coax a comment about how it’s “not worth the time” or how it’s “in the past so what does it matter?”
The Playa also starts chiming in with more witty comments as time goes on, all of them about as funny as a piece of wet cardboard usually but Lin laughs anyways
She doesn’t have an excuse for that and Johnny makes fun of her for it relentlessly because “Damn, Lin. I didn’t know you had such a shitty sense of humor.” And other wise comments
Speaking of Johnny: He and Aisha both act as (albeit shitty) wingmen for Lin and The Playa because they know Damn Well what’s going on between them even if neither Lin or The Playa will admit it
Johnny gets a rise out of The Playa by always making random comments about how “Hey, you seen Lin today? She’s lookin’ pretty hot—“ and then continues to describe Lin in literally just whatever clothes he thinks of first because he really doesn’t pay attention to Lin like that ever but The Playa does
She always corrects him with an added comment about how weird it is that he was looking because she’s kind of gullible and she doesn’t catch on that he’s just messing with her
Aisha and Johnny both repeatedly try asking Lin about The Playa like “The Playa’s kind of attractive, and you work with her a lot, you thinkin’ about making any moves?”
Lin always responds with the same eyeroll and dodging the question. “I don’t really have the time, Eesh, I’m busy” or “You work with her a lot too, Johnny, you sure you don’t wanna try anything?”
That’s not a no, Lin
Lin starts taking The Playa to Freckle Bitch’s and to street races she’s competing in when she doesn’t need to be hiding or undercover from Rollerz
She says it’s just because she wants to talk business with her or that she wants The Playa there “just in case any Rollerz show up to ruin the fun”
But we all know she just wants excuses to spend time with her and maybe show off a little
Girls totally dig street racers right?
She also starts taking the time to help The Playa learn how to race better and offers to help her fix up her cars for racing
Lin’s actually pretty private about her work when she’s working on her voxel, but she never minds The Playa hanging around when she’s busy with the car
It’s another chance to show off for her of course she’s totally okay with The Playa’s presence
The Playa literally couldn’t understand less about what the fuck Lin is saying when she’s talking technical about all the guts of mechanic work but she listens intently nonetheless
If Lin cares about it then shit so does she
Not to mention Lin’s kind of hot when she’s working on the car and gets all passionate and into it
The Playa is reasonably a little touchy and jealous about Lin stringing Donnie along even for the mission
Lin actually seems to enjoy the time she spends with Donnie and starts mentioning unrelated pieces of information from their time like shitty jokes Donnie made or Donnie being a klutz
The Playa is starting to think she had Lin pegged all wrong and misunderstood all the signals because it’s starting to look like Lin is actually into Donnie and even if she had a chance before she probably missed it now
Johnny and Aisha think that’s absolutely ridiculous because They Know Lin doesn’t swing that way but they aren’t about to be the assholes who out her, even though Johnny comes close one time when The Playa is trying his patience with all this “woe is me” crap
When Mr.Sharp has Lin in the pool hall, it takes him a painstaking anount of time to get Lin to comply and lure The Playa there
She was not about to get her stuck in this situation with her. It’s her problem and whether she’d ever admit it out loud or not, she doesn’t want her to get hurt. Especially not because of her own mistake
Eventually she only complies because she thinks that if anyone could end this with Sharp dead and neither of them severely injured, it’s The Playa
Jokes on her, I guess, huh?
Oh Boy here’s where it gets fun. I’m gonna split the rest into 2 different versions. One where Lin lives and one where she dies.
Lin Dies
The Playa doesn’t even think for a second that Lin needs her to get her out of the water
Lin’s too fucking badass, she doesn’t need help, she can handle herself
The Playa was too blindsighted by her anger at Donnie and Sharp to think twice about it. She gets out of the water and fucking bolts for the first car she can grab and races off because she’s going to fucking kill Sharp and she’s really going to teach Donnie a fucking lesson for betraying Lin’s trust like that
Lin loved him and he just left her and The Playa to fucking drown? Oh, he’s going to fuckin’ get it
She doesn’t find out until the next day that Lin drowned...she drowned because she didn’t help her
She was so caught up in killing Sharp and how Donnie betrayed Lin that she didn’t think for a second that she was ultimately the one who put the last nail in Lin’s coffin. She is the one who betrayed Lin the worst
Johnny and Eesh do their beat to keep The Playa’s spirits up but Johnny is Johnny and isn’t much comfort or help and she’s not the most comfortable with confiding in Aisha at the time
They do take her to tag along on some of their smaller dates though and Johnny starts putting time into trying to find where Donnie ran off to because “revenge is the best medicine”
Donnie and The Boss really get into it in SR2 when she finds him throwing the flowers into Lin’s watery grave
Donnie’s really fucking confused at first when she’s yelling at him for betraying Lin’s trust and love like he did. He manages to get in a few words that makes The Boss pause for a moment because Donnie definitely just established that he thought Lin and her were together
“You what? What the fuck made you think that?”
“I-I don’t know! She really liked you a-and I just kind of assumed—“
The Boss originally was just interested in revenge but now she’s going to get Donnie to rig some Brotherhood trucks so she isn’t just wasting time while she interrogates him about Lin
Whomp whomp whomp, turns out he and Lin talked about cars, her, and Joseph and there was never anything romantic there
“I can’t believe you thought me and Lin— We were both gay, what the hell, man. I thought you knew about her.”
The Boss also decides then and there that she’s not done with Donnie yet though, she wants him to hurt like she hurt for so long
Lin Lives
When Lin wakes up in a fucking ambulance she’s really fucking confused because she should be dead
She used what breath she had left to get The Playa out, what the fuck is she doing alive and on her way to the hospital?
Lin absolutely cannot believe for a second that The Playa wasted precious time to save her. She didn’t think they cared about others that much, let alone her
She hates being cooped up in the hospital and hates Julius’ babysitters waiting with her while the Rollerz are still around, but honestly she doesn’t mind when The Playa shows up between missions to tell her in detail how she killed Sharp and later Joseph
And after the Rollerz are out, while The Playa still doesn’t have a ton of free time, she still visits as much as she can just to talk
She talks a lot now
Jokes about how much money she’s being forced to dosh out on mechanics while Lin is out of commision
Talks about that one time Mr.Wong hired her to kill a hot dog mascot and about how she fucked up bad enough that it took her $500 at Forgive & Forget to get the cops off of her ass
Tells Lin about how Johnny is ever the classy guy and got his knee blown out with a shotgun from Big Tony because he couldn’t help from making a sex joke about Tanya and how Dex and Troy are constantly at each others’ throats with The Carnales
It’s like the new girl just doesn’t shut up ever now
And funny enough, Lin finds that she really doesn’t mind. She really likes talking to this girl
Oh no, Johnny was right
Lin thinks for a while about date ideas she can ask The Playa on after she gets discharged but they all sound annoying, lame, and way too cushy for her tastes
Ultimately she invites The Playa to her place because “Fuck it, after all the shit we’ve done I don’t care. I almost died and I’m not about to miss my chance again because I can’t think of something like a date idea.”
The Playa is very confused at all the increasingly obvious passes Lin is making towards her when they’re at her crib because they’re still pretty sure she was into Donnie and not her
Lin has the patience of a rock and gets frustrated and gives up within the first hour or two, “How are you this stupid?! How am I still attracted to you?! I’m trying to get into your fucking pants, do you wanna fuck or not?”
In SR2, it turns out Lin had the same idea as The Boss and they ran into each other at the courthouse both trying to break Johnny out.
They work as well together as they always have, it’s like almost no time has passed at all
“You get Johnny, babe. I’ll meet you two outside. Same old voxel but it’s purple because fuck the Rollerz.”
“Meet us up front, no point in going the long way if they already know we’re here.”
“And don’t get blown up again, okay?”
“Fuck, I missed you.”

@dcschain done reckon’d : [chinhands] tell me more abt gus' folk stories pls!!
unprompted asks | always accepting!
Tumblr media
thank you so so much for this ask! so i’m gonna be honest --- i love this aspect of August’s character. so much. i can’t wait to explore it more and I say that because.....well, I haven’t done it a whole lot of justice yet as far as development goes lmao. forgive me for that, as time goes on i should def have some specific examples of the types of stories he creates and tells to his clientele. but i’ve only had this boy since late april of this year, and developing all aspects of my muses so they resemble a multi-faceted, nuanced person has always taken me some time. took me five years with my last muse n i’m still not even all that content with him hsjdns.
ANYWAY! ALL THAT ASIDE. i do have some lil headcanons about Gus and his storytelling / creative process, so here’s a quick lil list of random bits n bobs about that ! :
August puts a lot of time and thought into his stories, especially re: his audience and the kind of mood he’s in. does he want to instill a moral lesson in the more impressionable youngsters? does he want to captivate kids with a sense of immersive adventure? or does he want to HORRIFY and INTRIGUE the adults who are seeking a little entertainment, and get a little ego stroke from watching them JUMP in their seats? for a gentle giant, he does have a deep fascination in the macabre and the frightening. whenever he has an audience of teens and adults, it’s a real treat for him. he loves telling horror stories!
he’s very organized about the aforementioned considerations. he has stacks upon stacks of journals in his bedroom where he writes down notes on his tall tales and sketches the people and creatures featured in them, be they wholly original works or his own twists on stories passed down from each generation. and he separates them all on the shelf by genre!
true to traditional spoken-word form, he’ll usually modify the tales a bit each time he tells them, to better connect with his given audience that day.
he loves using any medium he can to tell his stories --- spoken word being the most obvious. but Gus has even been known to write and perform songs which recount the tales, or cook any mentioned food to serve to his forge’s guests while they gather around his anvil to listen. and he especially loves to make grand, symbolic metal sculptures of the characters or beasts featured in the stories as he spins them. he wants to make the whole experience feel as physically present and real for his audience as he can, no matter what age they are.
Gus draws a lot of inspiration just from people/ nature-watching! there’s not a day that goes by where he isn’t sat outside his workshop on a lunch break, taking notes on whatever he sees. he uses the “and then” approach for drafting his stories a lot. for example, he’ll just jot down anything simple he sees, like a man drinking coffee, and let his imagination run wild with it until he’s got the bones of a plot. it’s not very cohesive at this stage and definitely lacking a lot of substance, but it’s a very fun start for him. honestly? even if he ends up scrapping the whole concept that day, he loves seeing just how far he can push the boundaries of believability with his stories, how grand he can get away with making them when they sprout from such an everyday premise.
storytelling even takes shape in his weaponry creations, although these focus much more specifically on the individual. Gus’s guns and blades are purely artisanal designs, and therefore he makes it MANDATORY that anyone commissioning him for weapons shares a drink or two with him first. he never knows who he might be making a firearm for --- the next great american bounty hunter? an infamous outlaw forever immortalized by history? an unarguable hero to mankind itself? but even if they just end up amounting to a simple farmer protecting his land from coyotes, he designs his works with the hopes that they’ll be a FEATURE in that individual’s life. hopes that the weapon crafted by his hand will be just as renowned as its wielder. they’re highly personal pieces, tailored with the commissioner’s life in mind. and being a man who creates and retells folklore himself, Gus knows that it makes storytelling much easier if the guns are as unique as the characters. and have names. he will also require that you name the piece before he gives you your purchase lmao.
in verses where he has partners, and even kids? they’re definitely the first to hear his story ideas so that he can get some feedback. he also creates personal creative works for his lovers/ spouses/ babies/ friends and honorary family. meant only for their eyes and ears.
he’s as avid a reader as he is a writer. on his days off, you won’t find Gus at the saloon, but at the bookseller and printing shop asking the owner (and his longtime buddy) Barney what new works he’s got for sale.  by the late 1800s, public libraries were also popping up all over the US! and chances are, if he’s not at Barney’s making conversation about his most recent purchase, or at the hardware shop scouring the stock for dying discount plants to bring home and nurture back to health? yeah. he’s at the library.

Endgame Talk
This little discussion is gonna have massive spoilers for Avengers Endgame. This is your warning if you have not seen the movie. If you haven’t seen it, just scroll all the way down as fast you can. If you have seen it or you don’t care about spoilers, then welcome! As for the rest of you, you have been warned.
Okay so. I know we’ve all got our own opinions on Endgame, the way the plot works, the way certain characters were treated, and especially with its ending.
I’ve read a lot of reviews and reactions about Endgame the past few days and in all honesty. There isn’t much I disagree with. A lot of the critiques given to the film are valid critiques. Some are just nitpicks that don’t really matter. But over all, the criticism is pretty fair.
In regards to the time travel, I barely understood how it worked in the film. All I know is that it worked and everyone came back. All I needa know lmao. I didnt understand time travel in back to the future, I didnt understand it in gravity falls, I didnt understand it in TMNT, I didnt understand it in Power Rangers, and I don’t understand it during this movie.
Time travel is a very difficult thing to figure out with story telling as every move made has its consequences. Which is why when I see people saying “The time travel in this movie created plot holes.” It makes me laugh because uh duh it’s time travel, of course it creates plot holes. We have yet to see any creator or writer do time travel and not have it cause plot holes or confusion. This doesn’t excuse said plot holes but it clears up that Endgame isn’t the first victim of the trouble time travel has on its story.
Okay let’s talk about Tony and Steve’s endings.
Oh boy.
I’ll start with Steve because right now I ain’t ready to talk about Tony.
Steve went back in time to put the infinity stones in their proper places before the team originally went back to bring everyone back and he was suppose to come right back to the present (or future in their case) but he doesn’t. Instead he stays in the 70’s (which is when he and tony got the Tesseract) and forms a relationship with Peggy and when we see him again in present (future) time he’s the age he would be if he was never frozen back in the 40’s.
Now, while I do agree this causes a lot of confusion in regards to events in Civil War and such but. That’s our timeline. What happened with Steve staying back in the 70’s was that he created an alternate time line where, all the events we all saw still exist, but he was able to live a happy marriage with Peggy. Or at least that’s how I saw it honestly. Steve staying in the 70’s didn’t change or alter anything in the main timeline. We know this because we saw that nothing changed.
Also. Steve never belonged in this time period anyway. In The First Avenger, Steve is fighting in WW2 and it’s a soldier. He was meant to be in the 40’s but he made a sacrifice that caused him to wake up in modern day. And while Steve did a lot as Captain America, that doesn’t change that this isn’t where he belongs. He watched as everyone in his past was either changed (Bucky being mind controlled) or lost (Watching Peggy die). Steve’s entire past kept coming back to haunt him. Which is why he took the opportunity to stay in the 70’s with Peggy. To give himself a happy ending. This was something foreshadowed throughout the film as well.
Now. Lets talk about the big one.
Tony Stark.
Firstly.
UM OW????? MARVEL YOU LEGIT RIPPED MY HEART OUT FROM MY CHEST AND STEPPED ON IT AND THREW IT IN THE STREET TO GET RUN OVER BY A CAR! HOLY SHIT THAT HURT. AND LIL BABY PETER PARKER CLINGING TO TONY DIDNT HELP NONE. GAH MY HEARTT. IM STILL CRYING OVER THIS
Okay. Now that that’s out. Lets talk Tony Stark.
Imma be real. The minute Morgan Stark (whom is adorable and needs absolute protection) popped out of the tent, I knew Tony’s fate. I had a huge feeling Tony wasn’t gonna make it out. And it hurt that I was right.
However, as much as it hurt to see Tony die, to see him make the last sacrifice, it makes sense both for story telling and within Tony’s arc as a character.
We’ve watched Tony grow from an arrogant man who didn’t really care for the world around him but his industry, to someone who wants what’s best for his family, who became a mentor of a young kid with a lot of potential to the point that only Tony really believed in him and who wants to protect the world.
We saw Tony go through this arc from beginning to end.
Tony’s never had it easy in his life. He lost a lot, he fought a lot, and he stressed a lot. Tony, throughout these films, has never had a proper time to relax and appreciate what he has because he was always fighting to protect himself, the ones he loves and the world. It got to the point in Iron Man 3 that Tony began losing sleep and could not rest because of all the torment he has been through.
Keep in mind Iron Man 3 takes place The Avengers and what happened in Avengers? Loki and a huge attack on New York that only they could stop. And who sent Loki on this attack?
Thanos.
It always comes back to Thanos.
Joe Rousso confirmed back during Infinity War that Thanos and Tony have connection.
In the sense of story telling, Thanos acts as a foil to Tony.
In an interview, one of the Rousso’s said:
“It’s all the heroes. I think he has the most specific connection to Tony because Tony is a futurist, and he has predicted a threat like Thanos. It’s lived in his brain even though he couldn’t name it. Tony is the most desperately driven, down to the core, to react against something like Thanos, although all the heroes will face a threat, no matter who it is or where it comes from. But I think this is intrinsic to Tony’s psychology, and because Tony started it all with Iron Man, he has a special connection to the threat that’s facing him."
Despite not meeting until Infinity War, Thanos and Tony have always had a connection. Thanos was the one that kept Tony restless. The reason he stressed everyday. Thanos was the reason Tony has to witness the loss of all his allies and surrogate son.
It’s all been Thanos.
The reason I call Thanos Tony’s foil is because of this connection.
Thanos and Tony have similar goals. They both believe what they’re doing is the greater good for the world. There’s a connection between them because of how they both think and operate. It’s why Thanos tells Tony he has respect for him in Infinity War. Thanos understands Tony’s view. And because he understands, Thanos serves to show Tony, and the audience what Tony would’ve become had he not grown and became obsessed with “balance” instead of the greater good.
In doing so, Thanos couldn’t live in a world without Tony and Tony couldn’t live in a world without Thanos.
Now I know some of you are probably like, “But Tony did live in a world without Thanos. He spent 5 years without Thanos around.”
and you’re right.
Technically, you’re right.
However.
Even within those 5 years, Tony was still haunted by what Thanos did. How Thanos won and that they lost. We saw throughout Endgame that Tony never forgave himself for what happened and especially for what happened to Peter.
Despite Thanos being dead, Tony is still haunted at the memory of Thanos and all the damage he created.
Hence why Peter was Tony’s main motivation throughout the film. When the team attempts to ask Tony for help regarding time travel, Tony declines as he says his too risky and because he doesn’t want to lose what he has now. Which is Pepper and Morgan.
His wife and daughter mean more to Tony than anything. We’ve seen Tony’s love for Pepper grow and we saw how much Tony loves his daughter. I love you 3000!
He got 5 happy years with them. Tony had his happy ending for as long as he could. Until once again, Thanos’ actions came back to haunt him. Seeing, remembering, that Peter was one of the people that were lost during Infinity War, the kid Tony grew to love as a son, and looked over and mentoured, Tony never stopped working on trying to bring Peter back. Without Peter, Tony felt like he failed.
At the end of the day Tony wasn’t worried about himself, he wanted Peter safe and sound. He wanted the world to be saved.
Tony needed closure. He needed to know the evil that haunted him for years was gone. He needed to know that his family and friends were safe. He needed to know that he fought until his end. And he did just that.
Tony Stark never ever stopped fighting. Ever.
Which is why Tony makes the ultimate sacrifice.
Using the stones and losing his own life.
Yes it hurt. A lot. It affected us and the characters in the film. But that’s how Tony’s arc was suppose to end.
It’s why Pepper said, “You can rest now.”
Tony fought Thanos non-stop for years and years on end. He never thought he could be at peace. But when he saw all his loved ones around for him, especially Pepper, his loving wife and Peter, the boy he risked everything for, and that they were officially safe and the monster that haunted him could no longer harm his family. He go be at peace.
He could pass on peacefully.
Tony Stark learned to love. Learned to care. Learned to grow. Learned that you’re not always alone.
Tony Stark learned all that he needed to in order make the final sacrifice in order to kill Thanos.
Tony Stark put the world’s protection before his own life.
Tony Stark is the true super hero.
His final words,
“And I... Am Iron Man.”
Were that for a reason, not just as a call back to he ending of the first film.
Those were his final words because Iron Man is not Tony Stark.
Tony Stark is Iron Man.
Tony Stark is the hero.
It’s the lesson Tony taught Peter with the phrase, “If you’re nothing without this suit than you shouldn’t have it.”
It’s not the suit that makes the superhero, but the person who wears it.
Tony Stark wears the Iron Man armor.
Tony Stark is the hero, not Iron Man.
Tony Stark’s arc has concluded.
There is no denying the pain and tears that were felt and shed during Tony’s death. But it was his time to go.
It was Tony’s time to rest.
Tony Stark fought and lived hard.
Tony Stark died happy, at peace and as a hero.
~We love you 3000 Tony~
Thanks for reading this far if you did. This is just my take on the film. Don’t take it as fact alright. What did you guys think of Endgame?

With that established, let’s get going on the reading and the chatting!
QUESTION 1. What has been your favorite scene in the comic so far? What specifically did you like about it?
QUESTION 2. Of all the strips in the comic, which joke/scenario did you find particularly relatable in terms of what it’s like to be at school or crushing on someone? In what ways did it make you reflect on life or how media portrays these situations?
RebelVampire
QUESTION 3. At the moment, who is your favorite character? What about that character earns them this favor?
QUESTION 4. Given the comic features a lot of pop culture references, which of those has been your favorite so far? What about it really made you smile, and what do you think the comic can teach us in terms of how pop culture can be used for comedy?
mariah (rainy day dreams)
1. My favorite scenes have been where Aoi tries to recreate Neguri-senpai in various forms of media. I found the video game one particularly funny X') I really like the contrast of how proud Aoi is of her creation but how off they are from the original. It reminds me of how much I loved all my badly drawn husbando fan art as a kiddo. http://neguri-senpai.blogspot.com/2019/02/neguri-senpai-new-game.html?m=1 2. I think Aoi's eavesdropping and creeping on Sana when it comes to Neguri-senpai is pretty relatable. I definitely have felt a similar anxiety about perceived romantic rivals in the past. I think the strip where it turns out Sana was just talking about her cat is a really good example of this. http://neguri-senpai.blogspot.com/2019/01/neguri-senpai-what-did-you-just-say.html?m=1 As far as reflecting on life and media goes, while I think the feeling captured rings true to life, it also makes me kind of bummed that these two's relationship is just fighting over a guy (who I assume is unattainable since he's a teacher? But then again who knows since it's playing on manga tropes). I feel like that kind of angst is common for the teenage girl experience, but I also wonder if part of that is because it's a trope that's so reinforced by media that it just becomes expected. Anyways, two girls fighting over a guy makes me sad if I think about it too long. This has been my TED talk.
3. I think Sana is my favorite character. Maybe exclusively for her goth socks XD Aoi is also very good. 4. Man, my only experience with JoJo is the one episode I watched and all the Twitter memes so I feel like most of those jokes are probably lost on me TuT I do really love whenever someone yells NANI??? though XD I laughed a little every time reading through. I also don't get a lot of the coding jokes, but the ones I do understand have really landed home
RebelVampire
QUESTION 5. What has been your favorite composition in the comic so far? What specifically about it do you like?
QUESTION 6. Do you believe that Aoi will ever be able to date Neguri Senpai? If so, how do you imagine that would happen? If not, how do you think the comic will comedically resolve Aoi’s crush on Neguri Senpai?
RebelVampire
1) My favorite strip so far I think is this one http://neguri-senpai.blogspot.com/2019/08/neguri-senpai-alone-on-roof.html where Aoi is suspiciously summoned to the roof but whoops, nope, it's just for a picture. I really like how this strip plays with the Japanese school roof trope cause it makes the comedic payoff that much sweeter when it's not any romantic or delinquent things. 2) A strip I found super relatable about going to school was this one http://neguri-senpai.blogspot.com/2019/07/neguri-senpai-finals.html where all the girls are discussing whether or not they failed a test. I think basically everyone has done that after a test, regardless of confidence, so it's just one of those moments that I think is universally connecting. I do not miss the stress of worrying about passing or failing a test. XD In terms of reflection, it did make me think that of all the school tropes media messes up, this is actually one that is very spot on to what real life is like, which is pretty rare. Yet, makes for good comedy because of this quality of being universally relatable.
3) My favorite character at the moment is probably Aoi. I just like how earnest she is, how crazy day dreamy, and how enthusiastic she is. It's the perfect combo where even her personality flaws really seem endearing, so I want to see her achieve happiness. 4) My favorite so far was this one where Aoi thought of Speedwagon: http://neguri-senpai.blogspot.com/2019/05/neguri-senpai-i-need-man-like-that.html While I don't know a whole lot about Jojo having been banned from watching it, my boyfriend really loves Jojo. So through him there is one fact I do know, and that's Speedwagon is a beloved character. So it really made me smile to see this show up in the comic and be proven true. XD In terms of what the comic teaches about how pop culture can be used for comedy, I think the biggest lesson is that it's a double-edged sword. If the people know what it being referenced, immediately creates that connection that's needed for comedy. But on the flip side, all those references will fall flat if the person doesn't know the references. So it's great to use, but also gonna be hitting some really niche audiences.
5) My fave composition is the last panel from this strip http://neguri-senpai.blogspot.com/2019/03/neguri-senpai-judgement.html WHat can I saw? I'm a big fan of angles and the whole dark overshadow thing to bring that nice oppressive atmosphere. It really sells the joke. 6) Until the end of the comic, I think the only date Aoi will get will be a joke one. Like one of those ones where she tots think she's going on a date but nah, Neguri Senpai just wanted her for some mundane reason. Like running errands for the school. But I do feel overall if and when the comic ends, it'll be on a happy note with Aoi getting with Neguri Senpai. If only cause there is no comedic rival yet after Aoi.
RebelVampire
QUESTION 7. Which characters do you enjoy seeing interact the most? What about their dynamic interests you?
QUESTION 8. Of the fourth wall breaks in the comic, which one did you find the most interesting and why? In what ways were this comic’s fourth wall breaks unique compared to other comic’s that do it?
Ash🦀
1. I actually really loved the lovingly recreated video game version of Neguri-San who dies five minutes later, as I found it to be the most relatable. I too take five hundred hours in character creation only to remember I have no hand-eye coordination. Also, I was quite glad when they showed Neguri-San’s younger self, because until that moment I thought he was another student and so I was quite confused. Not the dynamic I personally go for but it cleared up so much of my confusion. 2. When they’re all on the beach comparing bodies and Aoi’s like “but how will I compete with someone built so beautiful?” Man that was a MOOD. Been in a committed relationship almost 9 years though so I guess I figured it out. Also, if that’s foreshadowing Aoi’s eventual fall for Sana, that would be the best. 3. Sana is my favorite, because she plays off Aoi so well and seems like a capable and headstrong young woman. She’s really fun to watch. 4. The speed wagon joke was hilarious and you cannot change my mind. Also, wish I understood a lick of coding. 5. The strip when Aoi and Sana were in the classroom and Aoi was staring menacingly? Honestly? The best use of comedic tension that I saw. 6. I highly doubt it. She’s a student, and while it’s cute of her to have a crush, it would be inappropriate for it to be reciprocated. 7. I really enjoy Sana and Aoi interacting. I find their rivalry the most interesting, because Sana seems the most capable rival. She’s smart, she’s driven, and it’ll probably come to a final showdown with her. Also, her stand actually got me to nose exhale, which doesn’t sound like much, but before noon it is a monumental feat. I’d love to see them more directly interacting rather than talking about each other. and heck, maybe they’ll be the couple in the end. Love a good rivals to something more story. 8. Honestly I’m not too big a fan of wall breaks, but it does give me a chuckle every time they blame the author.

QUESTION 9. What sorts of details have you noticed in the way the comic is crafted that you think deserves attention?
QUESTION 10. The comic also features a lot of references to computer science and programming, so which of those has been your favorite? Alternatively, which concepts do you wish you understood more to get the joke?
The Q
9. I think the layout is really funny. This comic wouldn't have worked as well with a "traditional" print-style format. The jokes are well-paced, too, something we don't often think about when we (well, I) read commics! 10. WHAT ARE STICKY KEYS FOR? I know them as the annoying suggestion that pops up everytime I use my shift key too much... In general, I can feel a lot of the programming jokes fly right over my head, which is too bad, but that probably just means that I wasn't ever the intended target audience anyway. And that's okay. Honorable mention: the last panel of this strip http://neguri-senpai.blogspot.com/2019/08/neguri-senpai-animal-friendly.html is adorable!
RebelVampire
7) I think I enjoy seeing Aoi interact with Sana. They just have a really cute but funny comedic rivalry that is enjoyable to see unfold. Even when they aren't directly talking to one another their attitudes towards each other is pretty entertaining in itself, which is always a good sign. 8) I really enjoy the merch plug strip http://neguri-senpai.blogspot.com/2019/06/neguri-senpai-what-big-number.html if only because Aoi's face and reaction to that is hilarious and seeing Neguri Senpai enthusiastic about something just...it's laughs all around. Which while there are certainly comic's that do fourth wall breaks like this for self promo, I find this comic to be a bit unique just cause of its execution of the comedy. It doesn't really toe the line with what it is (which is something I see a lot), so I appreciate the energy of upfront in the face nature about it.
9) I really like all the little programming inserts in the comic. Like a lot fo the jokes surrounding them are so specific that I think for a lot of people they fly under the radar. But I like the accuracy for them. It's like that sort of niche inclusion that doesn't hurt the other comedy but really adds a nice chuckle factor for when you do recognize the joke being made. 10) And speaking of the above, my favorite one was definitely this one: http://neguri-senpai.blogspot.com/2019/03/neguri-senpai-judgement.html I have been on both sides of that situation before, and like the accuracy is on point. You're always going to judge people for their code editor of choice regardless of language involved. But I like that even if you don't specifically understand that part about it, it's still relateable in that one of them is being singled out for a potentially bad choice in a comedic manner. So just all around, A+ for that strip.
snuffysam
Oh man, this comic is a lot of fun. I think this was the joke I laughed the hardest just due to the nonchalant pacing of it - http://neguri-senpai.blogspot.com/2019/01/neguri-senpai-what-did-you-just-say.html My favorite character is probably Neguri. He's seen as this god by all the girls, yet he's awkward and almost a literal blank slate character. That sort of subtle humor is just really funny to me, so he's my pick.

QUESTION 11. What do you think are this particular comic’s strengths? What do you think makes this comic unique? Please elaborate.
QUESTION 12. Of Aoi’s rivals for Neguri Senpai, which one do you find the most interesting, especially in regards to their dynamic with Aoi? What other sorts of rivals are you hoping to see?
snuffysam
I think the comic's biggest strength is, for lack of a better word, how bizarre it is. Like the comic does have recurring themes of course (programming jokes, pop culture references, parodies of the school romance genre), but in terms of each individual strip I have no way of predicting what'll happen next.
RebelVampire
QUESTION 13. What are you most looking forward to in the comic? Also, do you have any final thoughts to share overall?
QUESTION 14. In general, what other sorts of comedic gags are you hoping to see in the comic? Alternatively, where are you hoping the loose story found within the comic goes?
RebelVampire
11) I have to agree with @snuffysam here on strengths. I think the comic is just extremely unique. Like individually you can find aspects in other comics, but all together it makes for a one-of-a-kind experience you cant really predict. And unpredictability is good for this sort of comic since its keeps things interesting. 12) It's definitely gotta be Sana imo. I think even if Neguri wasn't in the picture, they'd be destined rivals who would compete over everything. Yet they're both equally kind of exaggerated in personality in ways I would not peg for the typical sort of girl rivalry you see for school comics like this. In terms of other rivals, I hope Aoi has to deal with like a secret admirer one so that she can't exactly confront that rival. Maybe go the mystery detective route trying to figure out who it is.
13) I'm looking forward to more A+ programming jokes. They have some catching up to do if they want to compete with all the Jojo references. But also as I've complimented them, I just overall enjoy them a lot. 14) I'm actually hoping to see more gags with that one rival (whose name i forget) who is extremely blunt and vulgar about her intentions towards Neguri. Just the concept super entertains me, so I'm really hoping she gets to be in more gags that involve wordplays and stuff.

A Game of Hearts - Prologue: Promised (The Royal Romance AU)
Pairing: Drake x MC [Liam x MC]
Notes: I feel I must introduce myself since I don’t really post much original content here. So... hi! This is the prologue to a The Royal Romance fic series situated in an post-apocalyptic AU. This is the first fanfiction I’ve ever written and English is not my native language so I’m a bit scared! It’s big, so I had to make it a series. Usually I just make stories in my mind and work on them there but this one wouldn’t get out and I just had to get the details out, so I beggined to write it down. At first I felt apprehensive because I don’t really have many followers and honestly I have no clue if anyone would be interested in a post-apocalyptic story. Regardless, it’s been fun to write it and I figured if one person reads and enjoys it then it’s worth sharing! So if you do read it, I would really like to know what you think!
I do not own these characters, they belong to Pixelberry.
Summary: Decades after the only survivors of the end of the world started building a new realm, a young princess has to deal with the role assigned to her by her ancestors.
Word Count: 2912
Prologue: Promised
Tumblr media
The ten year old is restless in her seat as the voice of her tutor fades into background noise. Her eyes are desperately searching for anything interesting enough to catch her attention. Not that she doesn’t care for history lessons, but she has too many of them. And this specific one - about the prophecy that came with the end of the world - she swears she could lecture it herself for the numerous times she heard it ever since she was born.
"Your Highness." She fidgets with the strings in the waist of her dress when she notices a pause in her tutor's voice and realizes he is addressing her.
"Yes?"
"Have you been paying attention?"
She’s annoyed by his question, but replies politely as she knows she should. "Yes Mr. Frederick."
“Then I suppose you wouldn’t mind repeating what you learned today for Dominic here.” The tutor motions to the teenage servant who just walked in the room with a jar of water for them. The boy’s eyes widen and his cheeks turn pink, but finally he approaches the table and gives the girl a smile. She knows Dom, he is funny and always lets her get away with whatever unadvised activity she conducts within the castle. The girl returns the smile and is about to complain about how Dom already knows the history - who doesn't? -, but right before any words can come out, the older man interrupts, looking at the door “But unfortunately I believe it will have to wait.”
The girl looks across the room. It is sort of empty, with only one bigger table, the tutor’s chair opposed by two other chairs, one on which she is seated. The walls, as well as the floor and ceiling, are stone-gray and filled with maps and notes, some of them relics from the world of before. At the door stands her governess, a lady the girl reckons to be something between 40 and 50 years old, announcing she came to escort her to her chambers to get ready for her sword lesson.
“Why do I have to go anyway? Liam doesn’t go.”
“Prince William has private sword lessons”, Mr. Frederick corrects her.
“Why though?” She insists, getting up from her seat.
“Because he is a prince”
“Well I’m a princess.”
“No. You are the crown princess of Cordonia. And the Promised Princess of the Last Prophecy. It’s other people’s duty to keep you safe, not the other way around. Even so, it is important that you know how to defend yourself as well, during these days of war.”
“I thought the prophecy said that the Promised Princess would bring salvation and peace.” she defies. She can recite the prophecy by heart. She knows every word. She has to, after all. But there are so many things she still doesn’t understand, the words aren’t clear about anything. She doesn’t understand how the council of holders determined that she was the Promised Princess, or that peace will come from and for the North kingdom out of the four kingdoms built after the resurgence. Well, three, now that the East kingdom celebrated its allegiance to the North, originating the united kingdom of Cordonia. She doesn’t even understand why they are at war for so many years now.
The tutor scowls at her “You are much too young to comprehend all things.” With that, the man closes with a thump the book in front of him, as well as the subject.
She actually adores her sword lessons, out of so many lessons she has since young age - archery, history, diplomacy, engineering, physic. Although she is best at engineering, she prefers her sword lessons solely because she can be with friends there. She thought about telling them the truth, who she really is, her real name, several times, but her mother reminds her everyday how important it is that it remains a secret, for her safety. As she follows the governess  through the halls of the old castle, her mind drifts back to her first day of sword lessons.
"I know, I know. I'm Elia and not Sophie."
Queen Aurora gives her a stern look, but the princess knows her mother is just worried about her. With no cause, she thinks. Her mother is always loving and concerned, differently from her father, the King, who is always strict and distant. "And what if they ask you who you are?"
"I'm Bert and Max's cousin."
The older woman raises her eyebrows, as if waiting for more.
"On our mom's side. I know all this, mother!" Her tone is pleading for the questioning to end so she can join Max, her real cousin on their father side, to go to her lesson.
“Good.” The woman gives her a smile. “Go, then.” With that, the girl smiles before running out of her chambers.
Young Lord Maxwell is already waiting for her by the castle doors. He is her age, about her size and has his usual playful smile on. He is Sophie's best friend, she knows him since forever and they always have fun together. They often get in trouble together too. Sophie runs to him but as soon as she opens her mouth to speak, she hears a voice from beside her cousin.
"Shall we go?"
It’s her other cousin. Maxwell's brother, Bertrand. He is about four years older than Sophie and Max, and used to play with them, but not anymore. He says he doesn’t have time for children’s affairs. ‘Utterly boring’, is how Sophie would define him. He was assigned to take both the children to their lesson in the yard just some blocks outside the castle limits, so they don’t have to get a car to get there.
Sophie doesn’t get to leave Stormholt Castle when it can be avoided, so she takes in the view surrownding the pathway to the yard. She notices the big metal fences outlining the way and how the grass outside of them looks different, brown and too short. She considers asking the reason for such contrast, but decides it’s better to stay quiet until she gets to the lesson. It’s not like anybody explains anything to her.
Once there, Bert mutters some sort of farewell and disappears. Sophie is excited to finally be around some more kids. There are about a dozen of them, each one with different patterns drawn on their faces, all holding their training swords and waiting for the master, a man sitting in front of them, to begin the lesson. All around the yard there are guards securing the location for the class.
“You’re new”, a freckled girl approaches her. Her hair is red and she looks so beautiful, Sophie thinks. For a moment she wishes that she, too, had red hair, for she has never seen it before. Three other girls stand behind her, as if an audience for wherever she goes.
“What are you looking at?” The girl asks.
“Nothing.” The scolding tone from the girl is enough to make Sophie annoyed by her, so she just walks past her and her followers to stand beside some other girls.
“Hi” she says, hoping they are more pleasant.
“Hi”, a slim girl with dark brown hair answers. “What’s your name?”
“Elia”, she is prepared for that question. “And yours?”
“My name is Hana, this is Kiara and this is Penny”, Hana motions to the other two with her hand.
“So who are your parents?” Kiara asks.
“Kiara!” Hana exclaims with wide eyes. “Quit the rudeness with the new girl”.
“What? We’re all holders here, everybody knows that. Well… almost all of us are.” She gives a quick glance to the direction where Max is chatting with a boy she doesn’t recognize.
“My mother is Max’s mom’s sister.” Sophie tells her rehearsed lie.
“You’re Max’s cousin?” Penny jumps in the conversation, with a sudden interest.
“Yes… why?”
“Oh, he’s just… funny, I think.” Penny’s cheeks get pink.
“Well, children”, their conversation is cut short by the loud voice of the master, “Get in your positions, the lesson is starting.”
Sophie walks back to stand next to Max, who is excitedly holding his sword up.
“Hey Soph- Elia! You’re gonna love this.”
Sophie gives him a warning look. He knows better than to screw this up by revealing who she is to anyone.
-
She indeed loved the lesson and was congratulated by the master afterwards. The red haired scowled at it, it is clear that she is one of the very bests amongst them.
The princess starts making her way towards Max, who is again with the same dark haired boy from earlier, talking beneath the shadow of a undergrown tree, the only surviving tree in that yard. However, the red haired gets to them quicker, along some other kids.
“When are you going back to cleaning the grounds and leave the fighting for the real holders?”
“Stop pretending you’re one of us, settler!”
As she approaches, Sophie hears some kids speaking down on the unknown boy. He looks angrily at the ground and Max tries to pull him away. She furrows her brows, wondering why they’re being so pointlessly cruel.
“Hey!”, she shouts. “Stop this absurdity at once!” Her voice is full of authority and she realizes she sounded just like her governess when she catches the princess in some wrongdoing.
“Seems like the new girl thinks she’s in command”, one of the kids says.
The girl with the red hair frowns at her and stands in front of her. “Who do you think you are?”
Oh, if she could only tell her… “My name is Elia. And you are…?”
“I don’t need to tell you anything… Elia.” Her judgmental eyes scan the new girl head to toe as she pronounces her name.
The princess looks at the other kids that were also being mean to the boy, “What has he ever done to you?”
“Are you another prince’s settler protegee to be in his side too?”, The girl asks with a disgusted look.
Sophie had never been disrespected like that, nor had she ever seen anyone be humiliated for apparently no cause.
“Are you really so miserable that you need to belittle others so you can feel superior? Because I thought I heard you claim your nobility.” Sophie knows how to be mean, too. She can see that the girl was not expecting her answer by the shock in her face. “Didn’t really catch your name” the princess adds.
Then, finally Max is able to elaborate words “Don’t waste your time with Liv.” He starts pulling his cousin and the boy to a corner of the yard.
The red haired glares at him. “It’s Olivia”, she states, anger in her eyes.
Walking away behind Max and the dark haired boy, Sophie looks back to shoot Olivia a smirk and mischievous eyes “I’ll call you Liv.”
When they distance themselves enough, the unknown boy finally says something. “I didn’t need your help there.” Sophie raises her eyebrows.
“Come on Drake, don’t need to be ungrateful with her.” Max speaks up.
Sophie is finally able to give the boy a proper look. He’s a little taller than Max, slightly tanned skin, just like hers, and his dark hair falls messily upon his face, almost touching his eyes. His eyes are a dark shade of brown, not caramel like hers or blue like Max’s.
“Are all the kids in this class unpleasant, Max?”
“I’m sorry, Drake is not very good at making new friends.”, Max states.
Drake looks even more peeved than he was before. “I’m not.... it’s just… thank you.” He looks defeated, although he can’t hide a small smile “It was enjoyable to see Olivia put in her place.”
“Wasn’t that hard, was it... Drake?” She speaks his name with a smirk and a newfound curiosity. “Why were those kids talking about you being a prince’s protegee?”
That evening, Sophie sits in her bed, with a book in front of her. She is inside her chambers waiting for the right moment to sneak out. Her parents won’t let her out during open events, they say it is far too dangerous. It’s been a couple of years since she discovered the secret passageway behind the fireplace in her chambers, so she can come and go without the guard outside her door noticing she left.
Once she’s out, the girl silently occupies her usual spying spot. She looks down at all the people that came for the festivities but her eyes are searching for one in particular.
She spots him with his back against one of the walls of the front hall, and a man, which she recognizes as his father, speaking to him in what seems to her quite a rispid tone.
The girl gets up quickly and makes her way to the kitchens, where she knows the servants will be busy enough with all the food for the guests to notice her petite figure sneaking out of the castle through the back doors. She makes her way around the castle and stops right outside the main hall’s front window to leave her message there, and runs towards the side gardens.
When Liam notices the small horse-shaped piece on the window in the front of the main hall, he feels conflicted. He really doesn’t want people wondering where he is. Yet, when he catches himself, he’s already standing by the window, chess piece in hand. It’s not like he’d been able to ever tell her ‘no’. He wonders how someone ever could. As he slips through the doors he feels a little embarrassed to be giving in to some plotting of a ten year old. Not that he’s much older, but two years made a big difference at their age. He really doesn’t feel like she is younger when he’s with her, though. Actually, sometimes she would have him lost in the midst of so many ideas and other times he would be unable to understand her or read the expression in her eyes. He doesn’t know if tonight will make any difference in that matter, but it’s been a while since he had come to Stormholt Castle, and he doesn’t know when he’ll return.
Sophie finds Max already in the maze and feels a little jealous. She wonders what would be like to be able to be seen at festivities and roam around the castle freely during open events or meetings.
“Finally” Max speaks. “Did you manage to tell him?”
“Of course.” she states, matter-of-factly. “I don’t know if he’ll come though” The girl answers, slightly disappointed. She doesn’t say it out loud, but she hopes Liam will show up. She wants him to be her friend, not because he is a prince, not for the reasons the other girls her age brag about when they get to meet him in some formal gathering or festivity. She yearns to be close to someone who will understand her. She wants his friendship because he is the Chosen Prince of the Last Prophecy. They are in this together, they have to be. She is going to marry him after all.
“Hey” Liam’s voice startles her.
Turning around, she smiles “Thought you weren’t coming.”
“I’m here.” He sounds serious, as he always does. She wonders if he ever had fun. Or maybe she’s not like a proper princess should be. Maybe that’s why she feels uneasy with Liam, like she can't just say what she wants to say or he won’t approve of her. However, he gives her a smile and hands her the chess piece.
She extends her hand and takes it back “So you got my message right.”
“Yeah. Why are you the knight anyway?”
“Because I don’t like following a straight line.” She smirks.
Her answer manages to get a chuckle out ou Liam, so she felels good about it. “Of course not. Would you care to tell me why am I the rook then? I hope it’s not because I’m dull”
“You’re not dull, you’re just… steady, I think.” She doesn’t really know how to explain her choice.
Liam furrows his brows “I guess that’s… better than dull.”
“What?” Max interrupts “He gets to be the rook? Why am I only a pawn?”
“Oh Max…” the princess giggles “you should feel lucky you are my pawn.” Liam joins her and they both laugh.
“Are we going to play something or just stand here in the dark while you make fun of me?” Max inquiries.
“Yeah, why is it so dark here?” Liam asks, looking up at the big lamps that rise above around the gardens, turned off.
“Something about the generator.” Sophie shrugs “Someone is going up there in the morning to fix it, I suppose. It’s a separate generator from the castle, that’s why there are lights there.”
“Well then…” Max begins, impatiently.
“Have you any ideas, Liam?” Sophie interjects.
“Um… I used to play maze tag with Drake all the time back at Thorngate Castle”
Sophie smiles at the idea, but somehow she feels it would be more fun if Drake was there too. “Why don’t you ever bring Drake to these open events?”
“I would, but he never wants to. He says he can’t endure being around so many holders.”
“Heh” Max giggles “That is what Drake always says.”
She feels slightly disappointed, but then what is she thinking? She only sneaks out to see Max and Liam because they already know who she is. It is too risky for other kids, the ones who know her as Elia, to see her here, in her home.
Her parents spare no efforts to make sure other holders or settlers who aren’t servants or guards at Stormholt Castle don’t know who she is. People outside their small circle of trust cannot acknowledge what Princess Sapphire Aurelia looks like. Not during the war, and not until she is old enough to be able to fulfill the prophecy. That’s why it comes as a surprise to all of them when, twelve years later, she disappears.
