During an assignment for @novartis_ch in Zambia I've covered the daily life of healthcare workers from peripheral health facilities incl. a prison health centre situated outside the correctional facility but within walking distance. . What’s hidden behind the walls of Zambia’s prisons or the fight to see inside: There is, in fact, a long history of the public being kept away from prisons so that corrections officials could run them as they wished. It was a complicated path to gain access. The negotiation with the prison took quite some time and two appointments at the director’s office. Probably the first time the superintendent was encountering with a Swiss photographer... . Inspiration & motivation is like a treasure chest which lies right inside you, you just need the right reason and right understanding to unlock it. Perseverance! Rookie member of the EEG’s field research team. She’s a nerd-jock newbie who wants her idols to like her sooooooooooo bad.

-> Biology major with a particular interest in ecology! And bugs she likes bugs. And really all sorts of fun crawly invertebrates.

-> Perse is no stranger to the EEG headquarters, she’d been coming here for years before her official admission to the team! With two older relatives to shadow, she got to know a lot of the older members during her frequent visits. She greatly admires all of them.

-> She maintains some terrariums to raise and study copepods and amphipods. As well as several potted plants.

-> Perse has the same level of passion discussing a new and as of yet undocumented species as she does showing off the cute little house moth that almost gave Maven a heart attack.

-> She’s a hobbyist photographer with a Leica 1(A) 35mm. She’s into wildlife photography, and though her work isn’t very technically impressive, you don’t need to be an ace at something to have fun with it!

-> Perseverance maintains that she is NOT a nerd like her cousin, Maven, is a nerd.

-> She’s very athletic and energetic. She enjoys a daily jog, and plenty of exercise both indoors and outdoors. She loves going on hiking or full on camping trips with her uncle Phoenix.

-> She and Phoenix are very close. They’ve got a really easygoing and playful dynamic, with plenty of in-jokes built up between them. Phoenix was a constant in her early life, almost a third parent. He’d often visit to play with her and to babysit so her dads could enjoy a free evening every so often. He still dotes on her as much as Perse will let him get away with, but he respects that she values having a more adult relationship now. Still with plenty of fun, of course!

-> Perse and Maven weren’t really around each other as young kids, but became friends as they got a little older. Maven’s scientific leanings led to Perse finding and developing her own passion for study and exploration. Maven and the rest of her family have been nothing but supportive and nurturing, and she’s grateful for it. But she wants to make sure they know she’s not just a little girl anymore, and she’s ready to be the one offering support when needed.

-> She’s more than willing to get her hands dirty and to do ‘boring’, menial work. Especially if it means the people she looks up to see how diligent and cooperative she is :)

-> Perse is very needlessly competitive, though in a lighthearted sort of way. She doesn’t mind taking a loss, because it’s more about the challenge than the winning. It’s about the thrill. But don’t expect her to go easy on a challenger, because she still plays to win. Game night is a disaster

My second stamp is based on a different passion of mine, analog photography! Here is a 1950s film camera stamped in, the Leica IIIf. Back in its day, it was considered a very fine piece of kit, with a viewfinder to compose your image, and a separate rangefinder to align the focus.

I think the low-lying areas of this stamp look much cleaner than my first (though the light flatters it), and the not-quite enough pressure when stamping imitates the texture of the leatherette!

Georg Oddner (17 October 1923 – 7 October 2007) was one of Sweden's greatest photographers from the 20th century. Oddner was a jazz musician and studying advertising in the 1940s when he first came into contact with photography through John Melin, art director at Svenska Telegrambyrån in Malmö, the largest advertising agency in Scandinavia. From there, Oddner began working a variety of advertising jobs, including industry, architecture, and clothing, as well as for SAS. In the mid-1950s Oddner traveled to California, South America, the Soviet Union, and the far east. During these travels he was able to pursue photography for his own purposes. With Sten Didrik Bellander (1921–2001), Harry Dittmar, Sven Gillsäter (1921–2001), Rune Hassner(1928–2003), Hans Malmberg and Lennart Olson (1925–2010), Hans Hammarskiöld (1925–2012), Tore Johnson, and Pål Nils Nilsson, he was a member of the professional collective Tio Fotografer ('Ten photographers') formed in 1958, and their subsequent photo agency Tiofoto. The group was influential in Swedish photography. They regularly exhibited at significant venues and the whole group was presented at the Hasselblad Centre in 1998. He predominantly used Hasselblad and Leica equipment. His favorite photographers included Henri Cartier-Bresson and Richard Avedon.

Hey!  It’s been a while.  

A lot has happened in the past few months- I had a new book come out, and have another in the works-  but maybe the most exciting thing was in October when Leica Camera generously brought me to their headquarters in Wetzlar, Germany to participate in their annual Celebration of Photography and help with the rerelease of the M6 .  (More info on that HERE.)

My time in Wetzlar was four days of non-stop love for cameras, photography, and the chance to meet some incredibly interesting, passionate people. I’m still trying to process it all.  You might have seen the stuff from that Leica week I’ve posted on my Instagram account, but I am looking forward to sharing more here (and there) soon. 

None of this stuff was ever planned- I just keep doing what I like and am happy that it’s resonated so well with so many people. Your support is appreciated more than you’ll ever know.

Tout Va Bien is the 16th book publication by Swedish photographer JH Engström, recent winner of the Leica Oskar Barnack Award. Even back in the 1990s, long before photo books had become fashionable, Engström’s work was consciously geared towards this particular form of publication. His stories are a carefully composed culmination of single images, linked with one another in very subtle ways – a process Engström refers to as ‘visual poetry’.  In Engström’s approach, no style is valued above another. Instead, the combination of widely differing techniques is one of the characteristic hallmarks of his work. He shoots in colour and black-and-white, utilises focus, blur and natural light, and photographs with anything from large, medium and 35mm format cameras to disposables, Polaroids and 8mm film. Engström’s publications have won multiple awards. His first book, titled Shelter (1997) was chosen as Best Photo-book in his home-country of Sweden. His international breakthrough came with Trying to Dance (2004), nominated for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2005. This was followed by specifically theme-driven projects such as La Résidence (2010) which explores the absurdity of the human condition, or Sketch of Paris (2013), a passionate homage to the French capital. In a joint project with Anders Petersen, the photographer also focuses on his roots in From Back Home (2013). With Tout Va Bien, JH Engström (born 1969) turns his back on the notion of a prevalent theme. Scenes of a birth, the blurred shadow of an old man, poetic nature shots and surreal portraits all culminate in what seems like a personal reflection of the photographer’s inner world, though they are not strictly autobiographical. Cath is 21 and Leica is 22 (theyre almost a full year apart but theyre the same age for like half a month each year)

They live in the same dorm room at an art college for nocturnal animals, which only operates at night. in their world a lot of naturally nocturnal animals have to adapt to diurnal schedules for jobs and such depending on where they live. the town theyre in has a large community of nocturnal animals and thus theres a lot of infastructure in the city for nocturnal use. bike trails and streets all lit up at night, tons of businesses open 24/7 or only at night, etc. its a really nice town, and definitely a good change of pace for cath, given shes been on a day schedule for most of her life and has had to keep herself going with caffeine to combat her bodys natural rhythm. (when she moves, she becomes a "decaf bat" ah aha ah ha ha)

cath is studying music in school, a kind of side hobby for most of her life but something shes gotten really passionate about. college is free as fuck in their world by the way. she can play the piano, but not incredibly well given the enormous tits blocking her from seeing the keys. naturally because of this her style has gotten pretty jazzy and loose. most of her music sounds like a billion layers of midi noise playing at once. she also used to be into cosplay, but thats a whole can of worms unto itself.

leica is studying animation in school. shes into really gay anime stuff, and she mostly likes to draw her characters, who are two lesbian witches that she draws a lot of porn of. her other hobbies include ametuer spellcasting, curses, hexes, online satanic rituals a la end of The vvitch, and making home remedies that dont work.
