When people arrive at Tumblr, they are generally unsure about how to handle themselves. The buttons are easy enough (I mean, the UI sucks, but it's 2023, we're all used to sucky UIs by now, so....), but what are the social implications of each one? What does a reblog mean?
This is very difficult to explain to people for whom this is their first social media site, or are arriving here from (eg) Facebook. But for this round of refugees, from Reddit specifically, I actually can explain. Because!...
....As you have no doubt noticed ....
.... in a world where we all use 4 websites, and each of them consists of content screenshotted from the other 3....
...there is not an equal distribution of who's making content and who's copying it. Facebook generates almost none of the content for other websites; Twitter generates some; but nearly all of the content on the modern internet is generate on Reddit or on Tumblr.
There is a reason for this: all "web 2.0" sites have the ability to generate new memes, and new variants on those memes. But only Reddit and Tumblr have an evolutionary pressure that forces those memes through a natural-selection process. On Reddit, that pressure is applied by the voting system: if an addition to a post doesn't get enough upvotes, it's hidden from view, which means it has limited ability to affect the next generation of posts.
On Tumblr, the equivalent evolutionary pressure is applied by reblogs: each version of a post, each set of additions, is seen in proportion to how many people reblog it, and thus cause other people to see it. Lack of reblogs -> lack of visibility -> limited ability to affect the next generation of posts.
So with that in mind, let's look at some nuances that are specific to the Tumblr ecosystem.
1) Reblogs are direct visibility; upvotes are indirect
On Reddit, when you upvote something, it's a signal to the algorithm that -- in your opinion -- this thing is useful/valuable/funny or in some other way worthwhile. The algorithm takes that into account along with everyone else's votes, time since it was posted, and so on, and makes a decision about what to show by default vs what to hide by default, and how to sort things. Upvoting does affect visibility, but it's only one factor.
Whereas on Tumblr, reblogging puts the post on your followers' dashboards directly (assuming your followers have chronological order turned on, which most of them probably do because fuck corporate decisions about what I should and shouldn't see). One reblog = one post on everyone's dashboard; it's as simple as that.
Reblogging is therefore a much stronger evolutionary boost than upvoting is.
2) Likes have very little impact on visibility
Most people have "based on your likes" turned off. Even for those that keep it on, it doesn't affect what other people see, it only gives Tumblr some idea of what you might like to see. Of course behind the scenes that's somehow accomplished with some kind of correlation coefficient about which posts are most likely to be "liked" by the same person, and in that sense a "like" on this post increases the likelihood that someone else who has "liked" other posts that you have "liked" will see this post as well, but it's a very tenuous and wispy impact,.
Liking is therefore a much weaker evolutionary boost than upvoting is, and should be considered more along the lines of a high-five, or a hug, or a "I would give you gold for this if I could afford any" comment.
(Also, you cannot "like" only one section of a post. When you "like", the notification goes to everyone in the chain, from OP to the latest reblog. If you wish to give specific high-fives, the mechanism you're looking for is replies.)
3) Replies have no impact on visibility one way or the other.
Only OP gets notifications for replies, but you can tag people in the reply to notify them. This is the place for "@most-recent-commenter I would give you gold if I could" or for tagging a friend that you think would enjoy the post.
So, with the underlying mechanics of the ecosystem out of the way, let's look at
memetic engineering
There are two ways you can add your thoughts/ideas/opinions/snarky commentary to a post: in the text of the post, or in the tags.
a digression on tags
Tags -- of course -- can theoretically be used to organize content, although if we're being completely honest here, they're not ... great. for that. Tags can be handy as a textual handle to simplify your google search when you use an external search engine to search your own tumblr blog, but their use as an archival tool is mediocre at best. Likewise, no matter what the Tumblr UI says in the tag section, they're not gonna be that helpful in allowing people to find your content.
Tags can also, as sometimes they do on Twitter or Instagram, provide context to a post. This is less important here, since without a character limit there's no need to trim down your commentary and trust #wgastrike2023 to fill in the missing details, but it can be very handy when you're trying to determine whether this "Bruce and his buddies" post is talking about The Hulk or about Batman, or whether this thread is dissing Harry Potter, Harry Styles, or Harry Prince of Wales.
Tags are also very handy for allowing people to continue following you even when there's some sort of interest incompatibility. If you love spiders -- especially pictures of spiders -- and I'm arachnophobic, then I'm probably not going to be able to keep following you, no matter how excellent your Anarchist Star Wars takes are. But if you love pictures of spiders and you tag every single one of them #spiders, then I can block that tag and still keep following you. Similarly, a temporary block on #The Witcher Spoilers can allow the fandom to all discuss a new episode at whatever time they're able to watch it, without having to completely avoid online spaces in the meantime.
And finally, tags can, and are, used for commentary that you don't want to put in the main post. Where that line is -- what to put in the post and what to put in tags -- is something you'll have to decide for yourself as you get experience, but as a general rule, the post is for something that you believe contributes to the memetic fitness of this post, and the tags are for things that you believe are not necessarily of memetic value. Additions to the post are integrated into the DNA, and will be passed on with subsequent reblogs; tags are only added to your instantiation of the post, and will not be included on future reblogs (unless the person who reblogs it from you is on iOS Tumblr Mobile app and hasn't adjusted their settings, in which case it'll go into their tags... but at any rate it'll die out in a generation or two.) This feature makes it good for adding meta-commentary that will be interesting/funny/valuable to your immediate circle of friends, but won't be useful to the population as a whole -- it allows you to be as snarky, in-joke-y, and obscure as you'd like, without having to spend any of your mental RAM calculating what will and won't have an impact on your Brand as an Influencer.
Influencers
There is no easy mechanism for people to see your follower count. There are many easy mechanisms for people to make it impossible to see their follower count. No one cares about how many followers you have or how far your "influence" spreads. No one is going to offer you a Tumblr sponsorship deal.
However, for assorted underlying-code reasons, Tumblr blogs are disproportionately useful for manipulating search engines. So.... we have an ongoing problem with SEO scum making a whole bunch of bots and using reblogs etc to generate fake signals to Google.
The combination of those two things leads to a general Tumblr tradition of Block Bots On Sight. The extra followers aren't helping you, and the mere fact of their existence is hurting all of us. If you've seen people strongly urging you to change your profile picture, add a bio, and reblog a couple things, that's why -- because we don't want you to get caught in the crossfire of our ongoing guerilla warfare.
Other Notes
One of the places that Reddit is much better than Tumblr is in the viewing of an entire memetic population as a whole: you just look at a post, scroll through the page, and Reddit helpfully shows you want you want to see, and hides what you don't.
On Tumblr, each memetic variation is functionally an entirely separate entity. This is great for memetic diversity, but it means there's a LOT of duplication, and it means there's really no good way to get all the variants together. The closest you can get is to "check the notes" -- click on that number at the bottom left of a post, and look through the replies, reblogs, and tags. Those are in chronological order and in no way threaded, so it's not very useful, but it is what we've got.
Let's see ...
One thing Tumblr does much better than Reddit is the ability (because of aforementioned fragmentation) to have an arbitrary number of any fandom. No more "Well I don't like the takes in r/polyamory but it's the only place where I can talk about it so idk" ... nope! Here we can have as many Spider-Man fandoms as there are Spider-Man fans. Really like someone's headcanons? Follow them! Really dislike someone's OTP? Unfollow them! Really hate someone's take on your favorite character? Block them! This is a fabulous feature of Tumblr and I encourage you to take advantage of it.

tags can be 140 characters, but they can't contain double quotes (") or commas (,) because those are delimiter characters and Tumblr will break your tag at those points in the string

If you think someone has mis-judged the value of their tags, you can copy them from their post and paste them into the main comment of your reblog. This is known as the tags "passing peer review". Copy-paste is preferred to screenshotting for accessibility reasons (and also the fact that sometimes Tumblr just doesn't feel like loading pictures), and it's considered polite to credit the person whose tags you promoted.

Contrariwise, if you think they mis-judged the value of their comment, you can go back to the person they reblogged from, and reblog without their addition. Tumblr made this harder recently, but I have confidence that we'll defeat them eventually.

I know that I said reblogs are much stronger than upvotes, but when you've got infinite monkeys generating infinite reblog streams, it all gets lost in the noise. Reblog anything and everything you feel like upvoting -- if people don’t want to be subjected to a bunch of random shit that lights up the dopamine receptors in your brain, they shouldn’t be following you on Tumblr.

ok i might get blocked by a couple ppl for saying this but the Jackson’s Diary fandom is seriously making me wanna become a proshipper out of spite (read the post before blocking me or whatever please)
like idk if u guys have checked the fandom tag on ao3 recently but theres been a bit of drama surrounding the fact that someone posted a smut-fic of Exer (an 18yo) and David (an almost 18yo, who was aged up A FEW MONTHS for the fic) and they were harassed into taking it down and making a fucking apology post ON AO3, THE PROBLEMATIC FANWORKS WEBSITE.
and this fic was tagged 100% correctly like it was very explicitly tagged as smut n stuff yet there were still a bunch of comments being like “uhm what did i just read 🤨” and when i made a comment defending the authors right to yk, not be harassed for making not even rlly problematic content someone who clearly would suffer withdrawal symptoms if they turned twitter off for too long started arguing with me abt how “erm ackhtually we should be allowed to comment harassment under ppls harmless and explicitly tagged fics cause theres no smut in this fandom and it shocked us” and u could just rlly tell they felt they were more righteous than God in their opinions and yeah so cut to tonight when i’m scrolling through the tag and i see a post titled “i’m so sorry” in which the author made a post basically being like “i’m so sorry for posting that ik it was disgusting it has been permanently deleted” which in the comments a few ppl were telling them that what happened sucked n stuff (myself included // judging by their reply they only did this to stop the harassment which yk, completely fair) and i went back to scrolling since i wanted an actual fic not fandom drama but like 2 posts down there was another post titled “please stop” or smthn like that where someone else made a post basically being like “guyssss can we please not write smut of these characters this fandom is so wholesome i dont wanna ruin it 🥺 anyways sorry this isnt a fic this just needed to be said lol” and like dude, my guy, WHAT THE FUCK?!
this is AO3, this is a fanwork archive that as far as i know was created (at least partially) due to the fact that ppl kept getting their “problematic” works taken down from other sites and the creators wanted to yk archive all fanworks. this is NOT a social media site where u can make callout posts abt how what someone else posted disturbed ur pure wholesome chaste scrolling by daring to uploaded something with *gasp* consensual sex between 2 consenting adults?! (or canonically 1 consenting adult and 1 consenting gonna-be-an-adult-in-a-few-months-but-isnt-much-younger-than-the-first-guy but u get the idea)
like guys, ao3 is not twitter. it is not tiktok, it is not tumblr, its not youtube, its not even wattpad. it is not a social media platform, it is a fanwork archive, specifically one that lets u post whatever kinda content u want (yes, even smthn depicting 2 consenting adult/almost adult participates that are in no way related having sex, ik its crazy what they allow online these days).

It actually makes me big mad when people say Thomas can't post "suggestive" stuff or joke about his butt on his Instagram/yt/similar because there are potentially children watching. Well. You see, while I personally choose to censor Discord usernames to close loopholes like this, it's actually not the same as if you sent a Tumblr handle. What you're seeing in those screenshots are not identifiers, they are server nicknames. Which are specific to THAT SERVER ONLY. Unlike places like Tumblr and Twitter, where seeing your name automatically means someone can find you, on Discord it's actually not possible (that I know of) to doxx someone through a server nickname alone. So no, actually, Sophie didn't leave your username out there, only a server nickname, and the two are not the same. So yes, actually. Because Discord is it's own site with it's own way of handling usernames, it is perfectly acceptable what Sophie did (although not perfectly ideal), because nobody is going to be able to use those names alone to doxx and/or harass.
And finally, the final update as of writing this post... the almighty @ everyone ping...

To sum it all up, phew... I guess I'm a target now! Which I'm honestly pretty damn fine with! But just know, I don't fuckin hold back. Honestly, there’s something that I’m struggling with, I’m like salmacian, and I have bottom dysphoria, that’s like really really really bad, and I’m planning on getting bottom surgery, but honestly, I kinda don’t know how I’m gonna deal with the whole isolation aspect of it all. Cause like, the queer community HATES us bro, so while I love the idea of finally feeling free in my body it sucks because it makes me feel like I have to choose between my life and my community; my bottom dysphoria has been making me wanna kms, I mean like literally curl up in a ball and drop dead, and then you see people on Twitter and shit saying “if you feel dysphoria in this way you *SHOULD* kill yourself” and that’s really challenging for me, I can’t really go to irl queer spaces or transition right now (toxic family situation) but it’s crazy for all these queer spaces to be about “being your true self” just “NOT LIKE THAT” I hope IRL queer spaces will be better, but like I can’t just die because other queer people don’t like my dysphoria, but it’s also kinda hard to find others like me.
Like, what do I even do here?? Do I just pretend I’m cis? Do I publicly ID as nonbinary and pretend I’ve never had bottom surgery, do I pretend I’m like binary transmasc, and also like, in this vein, I think it’s funny (horrible) how nonbinary people literally get hate no matter what we do, we don’t transition? Then we’re bad cringy transtrenders and the reason cis people hate trans people, we transition? We’re evil incarnate, we just can’t win lmaooo. 💀
First of all, I’d recommend distancing yourself from spaces that promote anti-salmacian bigotry and trying to engage yourself in online pro-salmacian spaces as much as possible. Do whatever you have to in order to disconnect from the people who hock the idea that salmacians are bad or salmacian transitions are somehow immoral. If you haven’t checked out r/salmacian, I would highly suggest it– its the biggest (and really, only) community of salmacians I’m aware of and it can be really refreshing to be in a space entirely centered around us and our desires and needs. Connecting with other salmacians can be so healing, especially getting to see people who have physically transitioned and reminding yourself that it is possible to have that body and be happy. It also reminds you that there are so many of us out there– pretty much everytime I talk about being salmacian on here, I see new people who have never realized that “its a thing” and there’s a word for it. It is so much more normal to be salmacian than bigots will make it seem.
This post on the subreddit talks about dating as salmacians, and the consensus seems to be that the trans dating scene seems to be pretty accepting of salmacians– obviously that’s not going to be the case everywhere, but weird queers have existed since time immemorial. When you are surrounded by (especially online) regressive bigots, it really warps your view of reality and makes it hard to truly believe that that isn’t the universal standard. Its near impossible to thrive when you are in the situation, which is why its so vital to surround yourself with proof that that isn’t the standard. I promise you that you will be able to find a community that will find the idea that your dysphoria is “evil” to be fucking ridiculous and support your salmacian identity– you might even find other salmacians, or help other people realize its an achievable option!
I strongly agree with how nonbinary people get treated re: transitioning. Obviously binary people are not overall treated better but it really does suck there’s no way to be nonbinary that doesn’t involve hate– either you don’t transition (or don’t “really”/”fully” transition) and get seen as a transtrender who doesn’t know what its REALLY like, or you have a “weird” transition and get treated like a weird fetish-chaser or a TLC short and not, like, a person who just wants to control their own body. Tbh I would love to see more nonbinary/genderqueer-centered community stuff, along with more discussion of exorsexism that isn’t just “diet transmisogyny/transandrophobia” or “general transphobia.” Ik a lot of post-bottom surgery trans people feel disconnected from the trans community, and I myself have thought about how I’m going to go about… engaging with others and identifying myself post-op. Honestly I would love a salmacian4salmacian relationship but idk if that will ever be in the cards!
& when it comes to salmacians & exorsexism there’s so much stereotyping us as horny freaks (which is a bad thing apparently!) whose dysphoria/euphoria is Evil and Twisted and like… 1. thats just Transmisogyny 2: Electric Boogaloo 2. as if its our fault that 99% of salmacian rep is in fetish porn, so there are so many of us whose only exposure to the concept of being salmacian is through that lens. Or as if its inherently evil to feel sexually satisified with a body that brings you joy? (also this doesn’t even get into the way that so much discussion around transness is not prepared for altersex transitions & the reality of nonbinary people who are physically androgynous and how no, you can’t just slap binary theory onto our bodies and assume its going to cover our experiences, which is why while I would not call myself intersex I do feel a strong sense of solidarity with intersex people bc of the shared “stop assuming your forced rebinarization of myself and my body is okay or coherent”… but anyways!)
I’d love to see a stronger salmacian community, and know that you (or anyone else!) can send me asks about being salmacian, whether to learn more or for advice or just to share experiences/vent and I will be overjoyed to respond. Get up. He needed to get up. He needed to find his friends. He needed to make sure they were alright. It took forever but, he eventually got up. Shaky legs, blood pooling, but he was up. God it was so painful to stand. But he had to. He needed to go back. He said he would. He promised.
Sneeg limped through the mall. Past the empty stores. Past every exit he saw even with everything in his body telling him to leave he stayed. He had people to stay for. People he needed to fight to get back and get out with him.
He walked past yet another empty store until he heard it. The cries of agony. The sobs of pain. Charlie’s sobs.
“Fuck…oh god it hurts…This fucking sucks….”
“Charlie? Charlie holy shit it’s you you’re alive!”
“Sneeg?? Is it really you? Oh my god it’s you you’re here you’re here oh my god.”
Sneeg stumbled into the room to find Charlie on the ground, his stomach covered in blood. He was badly injured. But he was alive. Sobbing his eyes out at the sight of Sneeg. But alive. Just ike Sneeg. They were alive. And they had each other.
The hug they shared was gentle yet they held such a strong grip on each other. Charlie couldn’t stop crying, neither could Sneeg. It seemed that everything had been taken from them and they were left to rot away in a mall where no one would find them. Yet, here they are. Alive and with each other. Despite everything, they had each other.

The box closed.
I’m bleeding out.
I’m bleeding out.
It’s almost over.
Ranboo was in so much pain he could only think about the sweet ending he was soon to receive. It needed to be over. The ache in his hands, the pounding of his head, and the blood. It was icy cold against the skin which held his spasming muscles. They’ve never felt such discomfort.
The darkness was calling his name. Until the light started to drag them back.

They’d been stumbling around the mall for what seemed like hours. So many empty rooms, so many endless halls. No Ranboo. Until the red light drew them in. The unforgiving red stained the walls like blood as it shined out of the room from where it was sourced.
Sneeg and Charlie knew something was wrong. To their dismay, they were right. Upon the back wall of that room was..Ranboo. He was tied to the wall his hands secured with wires that dug into their skin. A box, around their head. Blood, pouring down their chest.
Charlie immediately panics and bursts into tears and limps his way towards Ranboo. “Fuck no nonono sneeg HELP ME SNEEG please god no we have to get it open.” Sneeg stands in shock. Charlie keeps rambling in panic before he turns to Sneeg, his face covered in tears. Through his own tears Sneeg steps forward and attempts to open the box as Charlie frees Ranboos hands.
With a few painful tugs and a slew of curses, Sneeg gets the box open.

The ringing won’t stop. There’s light? He’s pretty sure it’s light. Are their eyes open? He can’t tell for some reason. Oh no. He’s falling. Someone’s holding onto them. The ringing still hasn’t stopped. He’s pretty sure his eyes are open but he can’t see. Why can’t they see??
Nononono who’s holding onto them. Who’s touching their hands, their face. He needs to get away. They’re going to hurt him. Ranboo begins to fight back. Kicking, hitting, flailing as hard as he can. Every little movement burns. Everything hurts the bloods still flowing the ringing won’t stop. He. Can’t. See. But the tears and need to leave overpower.
“PLEASE NO LET ME GO PLEASE NONONO DONT TOUCH ME”
The hands hold him down. Someone has their arms around his chest and arms hugging him close to their chest. Another has their hands holding down their legs. He’s held still now but still sobbing and begging to be let go. He can’t be put back into these shows he needs to leave. They’re so weak now, their cries coming out quieter.
“Let me go…please. I promise I won’t tell anyone, please let me go.”
The one holding his arms speaks. He recognizes their voice finally as it registers over the prominent ringing in his ear.
“It’s me Ran, it’s Charlie! I got you, I’ve got you. It’s me and Sneeg I promise we’re not gonna hurt you I know ur scared but it’s us kid it’s okay it’s okay i promise.”
Ranboo hiccups, and gently moves his arms underneath Charlie’s to grab at his hand. Their other arm, trembling, reaches for Sneegs. They both let him hold their hands. Ranboo shifts to lay against Charlie listening to his heart beat and feeling Sneegs through his wrist.
“We’ve got you bud. I told you I’d come back. You’re safe. Relax”
Ranboo still felt so much pain. As he laid in Charlie’s arms. Even when they got in that car and he leaned against Sneeg. The pain was still there, along with the ringing and his lack of vision. But there was also something new. Something they hadn’t felt in a while.
Calm and Peace.
His life had been hell the past three days and the three of them had been through so much. They’d lost everything they had. That mall had stripped them down of everything that made them, them and left them with practically nothing.
But it did leave them with one thing; Eachother. They always had eachother. Throughout it all. And it was then that Ranboo realized something new in the back of that beat up old car.
He was always going to have his brothers. Charlie and Sneeg. They were always going to have each other. And with that they were always going to be safe. They brought each other safety, love, and one very important thing.
Serenity.

Hidden Flames : Prologue
Word Count : 1.2k
Warnings : drinking, swearing, food mention, break up mention, slight angst
A/N : So begins another story! @mxnsxngie and I hope you'll enjoy what we've been planning for a while now! If you'd like to be added to the taglist, you can let either one of us know!
“No! We are not watching that again!” Y/n laughed, playfully slapping Mingi on his arm. Mingi watched as her laugh slowly stopped, watching as her eyes glanced over the different options for snacks. And he couldn’t help but think she was prettiest woman alive. “Where’s Yeosang?” She asked, still scanning over the snacks, trying to make her decision.
“Pretty sure he went to get some alcohol.” Mingi answered, his eyes still trained on her, not realizing that Yeosang was coming up from behind him.
“Actually I’m behind you dipshit.” Mingi jumped at the sudden voice, causing both Y/n and Yeosang to burst out laughing.
“You both suck.” Mingi whined, pouting at his best friends. Y/n pouted back at him as she jokingly apologized, kissing his cheek just as she’s always done. He’d never admit that those small kisses actually do make him feel a lot better. He knows they’ll both tease him, so he keeps quiet so he can enjoy every kiss in peace.
“Mingi! My man!” Mingi turned towards the familiar voice, seeing Mae and Wooyoung walk right up to him. “And Yeosang and Y/n. Hey.” Wooyoung greeted the three of them. “Mingi! You’re coming to the club tonight right?”
“Of course! I wouldn’t miss it for the world.” Mingi chuckled, his personality doing a quick 180, acting as if just minutes ago he wasn’t talking about how excited he was for movie night, listing off a bunch of movies they could watch, all being his favourites.
“Perfect! You two wouldn’t mind if we stole him now, right? We’re pregaming.” Mae said as she clapped her hands onto Mingi’s shoulders, slowly walking away with him before Yeosang and Y/n could answer.
Yeosang could tell with just a quick look at her face that she was hurting but pretending not to. She had a smile on her face but it didn’t reach her eyes. She slowly picked out her snacks as if nothing happened, but Yeosang could tell that she was holding back tears. “Let’s go pay.” He said, taking the chip bag out of her hands and placing it into the cart, pushing it towards the cash area before she could say anything.

She did her best to pretend like she was okay, like the fact that movie night went from a trio thing to a duo thing didn’t bother her at all. Setting all the snacks up on the coffee table, smiling to herself as she took a picture before Yeosang handed her a glass of wine. “Looks good, pretty girl.” Yeosang complimented.
“Thanks. I’m going to post it on twitter and make Mingi jealous that he chose clubbing over us.” She tried to make it a joke, but Yeosang saw right through her.
“Talk to me, pretty.” His voice was soft as he sat on the couch, grabbing her by her wrists, and pulling her into his lap. “Let me be here for you.” She nodded, letting the tears finally fall, Yeosang wiping them away with his thumbs as they fell.
“I’m in love with him, Yeo.” He wasn’t sure what he was expecting to hear, but that wasn’t it. He also wasn’t expecting to feel pain in his chest at her confession. “We dated back in high school, but it didn’t last long. We both agreed it felt too weird. But fuck. That didn’t stop me from falling in love with him over the years.”
“His loss, pretty girl.” He continued wiping away her tears, tucking her hair behind her ears. “Only an idiot wouldn’t choose you.” He held her face so she made eye contact with him as he said that, begging her to hear the words he couldn’t say. Begging her to see the feelings he held behind his eyes.
“Thank you.” She smiled, leaning forward to press her lips to his cheek, and then getting off his lap. He shivered at the sudden coldness on his thighs, wishing she didn’t move. He’d hold her for hours if she wanted him to. And he hates it. Why did he have to realize he’s in love with her the second she tells him she’s in love with someone else? Is it too late to win her heart?
Even if it is, he’s going to try anyway.

His phone went off with a twitter notification stating that Y/n posted. The girl he was talking to no longer mattered as he clicked the notification, seeing their coffee table covered with movie snacks. “They’re doing movie night without me?” He mumbled to himself, reading the caption of the picture. Movie night with my pretty boy. Are they dating? They would have told him if they were, right?
“Whatcha looking at, big boy?” Mingi spun around to see the familiar smirk of his best friend, Kayla. “Regretting coming out tonight?” She cocked an eyebrow at him, easily able to see passed the façade he put on for everyone else. She knows he’d much rather be curled up at home, watching a movie with his two roommates. Yet he allowed Wooyoung and Mae to drag him out almost every night.
“Never. Clubbing is way more fun than movie night.” He scoffed, but it only made Kayla laugh.
“Yes, that’s why you ignored the pretty girl hitting on you to stare at Y/n’s tweet.” She teased. “You know you could always go back.” Mingi took another look at the tweet, imagining himself with them instead of at a club he didn’t want to be at anyway. Then he slid his phone back in his pocket and downed his drink, quickly ordering another one.
“I want to be here.” He lied. He would give anything to be at home right now, his arms wrapped around Y/n, playing with her hair as they watched whatever was on screen. He wouldn’t be paying attention, too focused on the girl in his arms.
But then he imagined her curled up in Yeosang’s arms instead. Imagined Yeosang running his fingers through her hair, whispering to her about how pretty she is. He’d tell her that, right? Because she deserves to hear it over and over until she finally believes it. Until she can look in the mirror and tell herself that she’s pretty. Because to Mingi, she’s the prettiest girl he’s ever seen.
All the other girls he’s met throughout his months of partying could never even dream of comparing to her. So why was he here when he could be at home with her? “I want to be here because she broke up with me when I was still falling in love.” He mumbled before taking a drink of his new drink. He had hoped it was too incoherent for Kayla to hear, but she did. And things made a little more sense to her.
Mingi was in love with Y/n but he had no idea Y/n was in love with him as well.

okay listen I'm so tired lol
I am a fandom old. I've been around the freaking block like eight dozen times. I'm at the point in my life where I enjoy media because it's FUN and ENRICHING for me personally, rather than something I base my identity on. I adore the community that happens in fan spaces (mostly).
here is why I never trust an anon that's clearly just being a dick: I've been in way to many scenarios where people who aren't even invested in the thing just think it's so fucking funny to watch segments of a community fight with each other. it tickles some part of their lizard brain. their mom never taught them not to be an asshole to strangers. idk.
there's a political term that you may or may not be familiar with called astroturfing. it's frequently used in marketing and politics to falsely create the image of vast public support for something that doesn't actually have all that much natural support. for example, people who don't especially have strong feelings about trans issues being encouraged/paid/instructed to respond to any and all trans support a certain way. responding to blogs, sending letters to the editor, posting on message boards, etc. their goal is to create a broad public perception that most people are anti-trans (untrue).
and it works. entire fucking laws and legislation and protests and fearmongering come out of that shit. people make up FAKE PROBLEMS (cis men dressing up like women to go be pervy in public bathrooms???) and spread the word via bad actors and controlling the public discourse. the media conglomerate that gamed Facebook to disproportionately support asshole authoritarian alt-right clowns and got them elected was EXCELLENT at it.
a similar thing can happen in fandom, ESPECIALLY when that fandom is a haven for women, POC, queer folk, and other minorities. you guys might remember GamerGate and SadPuppies? yeah all those fuckers are still active and still purposely being shitty at every given opportunity because they think it's funny to make the "libs" fight amongst themselves.
look up #yourslipisshowing if you're not familiar. it was a movement by Black Twitter (specifically Black WOMAN Twitter) to expose bad actors who would create accounts posing as Black woman activists, learn the surface-level terminology, and just purposely cause discord in leftist spaces under the ever-familiar activist method of "being morally pure is a thing that can exist."
anyway: any time I get an ask or comment without a name attached that is very obviously intended to poke me in a sore spot, I delete that shit and assume it's some fucker trying to start fan drama for kicks. even if I'm wrong, I still don't need to feed into that shit. this is my fun, happy space. I'm an activist and do activist shit and get angry at the world in real life, I don't need it in my little fandom corner of the internet too.
which is not to say that shitty fans and shitty fandom takes don't really exist. they very much do. but I don't give them much air unless there's an actual name attached. and even THEN it can be hit or miss because people can and do create fake accounts if they're especially dedicated to being a shithead.
so: if you're minding your business and some goober comes into your ask box with shit that's clearly intended to push a button, give it like 24 hours to cool down and decide if it's actually worth it to respond. for me, most of the time I determine that it's not.
don't get me wrong. calling out bad behavior in fandom IS IMPORTANT and SHOULD BE DONE. I just also think it's important to try and find the joy and camaraderie in these spaces as much as possible and that people who try to disrupt that for jollies suck real bad and give a disproportionate perception of "what X fans are like."
in summary, my philosophy is be the best person you can be, be as kind as is warranted, focus on the parts of your fandom that make you happiest, and carry a big stick for when the jerks won't take a hint.
also like. shitting on other characters to prop up your fave is such a freaking middle school move. are you in middle school? if so, I'm sorry. if not, I'm still sorry, but for a different reason.

And they were Roommates~
Quackity scrolled on his phone, staring as the clip circled around Twitter, tagging Quackity in every post, making his laugh at some of the captions and edits, even if it was only one clip, of course, they didn't know your name or anything about you but they did get creative with it.
The one that made him and you laugh the most was the 'and they were roommates' meme that was circling the internet. He looked up from his phone with a chuckle, showing you his phone from across the couch.
"Look at this." He laughed, playing the short edit which made them both laugh happily.
"Omg, damn, guess I'll be a hot topic for a while." You laugh, running hand through your hair causing Quackity to bite his lip as a faint blush dusts his cheeks.
"Yeah, don't get a big head about it." Quackity rolls his eyes with a smile. "Besides, by time of my next stream you'll be old news."
"Yeah?" You asked with a raised brow. "How much you wanna bet on it?" Quackity pauses for a moment before a smile tugs at his lips.
"Alright, fine, if you win, I'll let you on another stream, but when I win, you have to sit back and watch whatever movie I pick."
"You won't win-"
"I will."
"But you won't-"
"Shut up."
"Chat! Shut up, I'm trying to win a bet here!" Quackity screamed into his mic, slamming his hands down on the table, his phone made a small buzz, he looked down for only a second but he knew it was you.
"See chat! The fucker is getting cocky!" He sighed, picking up his phone, turning it off completely. "No, nope, not happening, I'm banning him from my chat, nope, no, not happening."
"Hey! What the fuck!?" Your voice could be heard through his walls, causing Quackity to laugh and fall off his chair with a loud thud. "Did you fall off your chair, you dumbass!?" You yelled again, walking into his room, just off camera. "What is wrong with you!? Here, let me help you up."
Quackity groaned, reaching out for your hand, helping him stand, stumbling only a bit. "This doesn't mean I'm not unbanning you from my chat."
"Yeah, I know, I know." You roll your eyes, moving to read his chat with a chuckle. "You're chat is so funny."
"Do not encourage them."
"What a bunch of little cuties."
"Y/N-"
"What? I'm not doing anything." You said with a shrug, still reading through the chat with a smile on your face. "Do I win?" You asked, looking back at Quackity.
He simply huffs and crosses his arms, falling back on his chair. "Go fuck yourself." You chuckle.
"Are you reading this shit, they want us to kiss!" You laugh, turning around to face Quackity and his rolling eyes before staring back at you with confusion before his face falls and shoulders slump.
"No...Y/N...don't you fucking dare..." Quackity warns with narrow eyes before his arms outstretched to stop you as you lean towards him, your arms also outstretched to hold him. "Y/N! You bitch! Don't you fucking dare!"
"Oh, but Quackiy..." You tease, laughing happily. "Come on! Give me a little kiss!" You laugh and pucker your lips, Quackity pushing you away with little playful effort.
"Piss off!" He laughed, pushing you away.
"But what about chat-"
"Fuck chat! Stop encouraging each other!"
"But Quackity-"
"Suck a dick!"
