so, apparently marvel is in disarray. ahead of the marvels coming out this weekend, variety dropped a bomb on the studio's somewhat dire state of affairs, as the franchise has hit its first real rough patch since the release of iron man 15 years ago. among the issues: jonathan majors, whose domestic violence arrest continues to hang over marvel's plans to make his character the thanos-like heavy for the next sequence of movies, the weak box office projections for the marvels (which some have said is tracking lower than recent bombs like the flash), the unending flood of hashtag content on disney plus which is overwhelming audiences who are finding it harder to keep up with the interlocking stories that have served marvel so well over the years, shoddy visual effects, spiraling budgets such as the reported $25mil an episode for she-hulk, a show that looked terrible because of the shoddy effects work aforementioned, behind the scenes chaos as kevin feige works to slash budgets and kill projects that aren't coming together. one movie at risk is the forthcoming blade reboot with mahershala ali, which has gone through rewrite after rewrite including reportedly one draft in which blade was the fourth lead in, quote, "a narrative led by women and filled with life lessons".
that last line has provided a lot of laughs for people like jay gothicprep, and critics who insist that marvel's efforts to diversify the lineup have led to much of this disaster, indicative of disney's overall failure with things like indiana jones and the dial of destiny or animated projects like strange world or lightyear. while this is potentially true (i guess, it's possible) it doesn't seem true because this certainly wasn't the case when black panther and captain marvel were both cracking the billion dollar mark a few years ago. rather it just seems, more simply, that marvel has run its course. marvel was hit by a double-whammy of endings. the thanos storyline that'd dominated the first ten or so years of the project came to an end. at the same time, the pandemic began and disney plus started flooding the zone with content, creating a natural break point for audiences that had no desire to watch hours of tv to understand 1.5 plot points in whatever the next movie that's coming out is.
this preamble is getting kind of long, and i have a lot more to say, so i'm going to continue to thought dump about this under a cut.
first of all, i'm still laughing like a week later at the women led life lessons description. no one has disputed that it happened. that description is the funniest thing i've ever read in a trade industry report possibly ever. what in the hell, my friends. did a writer even talk to a producer about what blade was? it's a movie about a guy with a sword who kills vampires! it's pretty straighforward! that sounds like something i want to see! there were three of them already, and two of them were pretty good!
anyway, i think you can take that incredibly ridiculous description of a draft that maybe wasn't the main draft – this movie has been through tons of writers and directors – and see some of the real problems with marvel's creative direction, which is that they've stopped making movies that highlight the core concepts of their characters. there are other problems as well, but when's the last time they put out a movie that was like, "iron man. he's a guy in a metal suit and he fights a bad guy." or "spider man. it's a guy in a spider suit with spider powers. he's got girlfriend problems and he fights crime around manhattan and maybe there's dr octopus." they don't do that. their recent stretch of movies have all been these impenetrable multiverse stuff with ties to tv series that you haven't seen and maybe won't ever see. there was a whole 25 minute section in black panther 2 that was setting up armor wars and ironheart. and like. who needs that sequence, which was boring and looked like total garbage? and now armor wars is being redeveloped lol. they've just departed from a lot of the core concepts that powered their earlier films.
they have some other problems. they've leaned into a slate of characters that is not all that well-known or inherently super popular, even for marvel being able to deliver on making billion dollar films out of guardians of the galaxy and such. maybe with the exception of spider man, which they don't get a full cut from because sony owns the actual movie rights. then there's the fact that the streaming series, by all accounts, aren't great but you *feel* like you need to have seen them. they're all real big problems. marvel needs to go back to making movies that are named after a character who's a superhero with a clear concept. guy with spider powers fights crime in his neighborhood. even though those movies got kind of repetitive, they did well enough because they didn't stray too far from the character concept.
i think, too, as a viewer, when you have a studio churning out so much stuff that's not good, you get the impression that the superhero industry feels entitled to your time and entitled to your money while not delivering.
this summer also represents an interesting counterpoint to what's happened with marvel and dc. the sheer amount of stuff that you devote every waking minute to keeping track of the damn things got exhausting and made movies stop feeling like events. this summer we've had barbenheimer and the eras tour, and those have been both big events and felt exciting. barbie was a chance to be campy, oppenheimer was a chance to see something serious and cinematic, the eras tour was exciting for fans of taylor swift who couldn't afford to spend $3k on taylor swift. and they felt this way because they were all unlike anything you'd seen at the movies in recent years. they had a high standard of quality, and going, it genuinely felt like people were there because they wanted to be, not because they were being force marched by a cultural behemoth to be there. you can't summon that same kind of energy for a marvel movie when it both feels obligatory and you expect it to be bad.
it also feels like there's a certain contempt for the audience where it concerns quality problems. i mean, i don't think that this is the intention. marvel isn't saying "we can deliver this stuff that's garbage and people will see it anyway". but one of the things i thought was the most damning about that variety story was the fact that, on some of the marvel tv shows, the final effects were inserted after the shows were released. so if you watched the show on opening night, you probably didn't see the final effects work. the arrogance involved in that is insane. it speaks to a total vanished pride in putting out a good product.
even some of marvel's better regarded films were heavily edited and heavily worked on right until the end, in part because kevin feige would come in and fix things, so stuff would have to get reworked. that's why effects deadlines were super tight and people were always crunching at the very end of this. there was that incredible quote from sam raimi from a couple months before the second doctor strange came out where he was like, "i think it's done but i'm not sure. marvel, they work on their movies until the very end." the director didn't even know if his own movie was locked or not because he clearly wasn't the one making the decisions about what the final print would look like.
that can work if you're making two movies a year and have a supervisor that comes in during the process and says, "i need you to redo this, in this way". but when you stretch that out to three movies a year, plus god knows how many episodes of television, there's no way to do that and make it a high quality product.
an instructive lesson comes from the book "disneywar", which chronicles michael eisner's time at disney. and one of the things in this book was the development and deployment of "who wants to be a millionaire" in america. bob iger is head of abc at this time. the guys making this show do it for a week. audiences love it. it's putting up huge numbers. everybody is excited. it's crushing it in the ratings. and the people who made it wanted to keep doing special week or two week long engagements that people would show up for. and iger was like, "no. i want this every week, three times a week, forever." and audiences got burnt out on it quickly, because it was something that only really worked as a special that ran for a week and disappeared for a few months. that's what the disney plus strategy feels like with marvel.

So I was being a basic bitch the other day and listening to my true crime podcasts when it occurred to me just how suspicious Nile’s “death” would look to everyone not in the Guard, leading me to a train of thought that, 2200 words later, absolutely got away from me but I can’t let go so I’m inflicting it on all of you!
To set the stage, we know the movie takes place over approximately a week. Here’s what happens to Nile from the military’s point of view:
She dies is very seriously injured
She heals without a scratch
Just before she’s supposed to be shipped out to Germany, she vanishes, leaving two men concussed (and presumably reporting being knocked out by a woman with short hair wearing civilian clothes)
She goes AWOL for several days
They get word from the CIA that she is to be reported killed in action (details unclear)
So, at the beginning of this very weird week, the USMC has to tell Nile’s family of her death critical injury. What her family was told depends on how long she was dead – a Google search tells me that family will be notified in person within 8 hours of a soldier’s death, but we don’t know how long her first death lasted. For an injury, however, they’d get a phone call to notify them and the unit would arrange for them to visit as soon as the soldier is transferred out of a combat zone. Like I remember when I was in high school, a guy from my church who was a Marine was really seriously injured in a helicopter crash in Iraq and from what I could tell, his parents were told immediately and were flown out to Germany to see him, so it stands to reason that Nile’s family would have been informed relatively quickly after her throat was slashed, one way or another.
And then, she goes AWOL. Her family would be notified while the USMC tried to figure out where she went, not least because the military would want to know if she’s contacted them. (And it’s possible that her family may have been on the way to Germany to see her since we know that’s where she was supposed to go!) So for several days:
Nile’s mom and brother have no idea where she is
They know she was seriously injured and most certainly should not have been moving around on her own
They can’t get a hold of her
The military can’t tell them anything
And the next thing they know for sure is that she was “killed in action.” After being injured and vanishing into thin air. And they presumably cannot produce her body or any concrete evidence of her death. In any case, something sketchy is going on, so they’re like. SMELLS LIKE A MILITARY COVERUP.
In a surprise to probably no one, there is a well-documented legacy of mysterious US military deaths, particularly of women of color (TW for sexual assault in these links). The cases of LaVena Johnson and Vanessa Guillenin particular have made national news because of their families’ persistence in seeking justice. Likewise, Nile is a Black woman, and her mom and brother are most certainly hypercognizant of (a) state violence against Black people and (b) these high-profile cases of suspicious military deaths. So her family are seriously side-eyeing the situation, knowing that (a) the military has a serious incentive (and a documented history) of covering up things that make them look bad and (b) nothing about Nile’s disappearance and supposed death are adding up.
And Andy’s right. Nile does come from warriors. And you know who else does? Her brother.
Don’t get me wrong. Nile’s mom would absolutely not back down. She’d know something was up and want to get to the bottom of it. But based on what I know about Gen X parents (mine), they’re not the most technologically savvy. Like they can use the internet, but they didn’t grow up with it the way we young millennials and Gen Z did. So Nile’s brother takes the lead. And what do zillennials do best?
Social media.
Nile’s brother starts going hard on any site he can, trying to get the word out to see if anyone knows what happened to his sister. He starts a Reddit thread. He starts a Facebook group. He reaches out to the media and true crime bloggers and podcasters à la Sarah Turney, getting loud and being a general nuisance in hopes of getting some answers. He gets his friends and Nile’s friends involved. Maybe eventually Dizzy, Jay, and others from Nile’s unit hear about it and reach out, telling him what they saw and how weird it all was. He’s drumming up interest, and soon “Nile Freeman” becomes a household name (at least among the true crime fans).
Copley is, of course, trying his best, but at this point there is just so much that it’s impossible for him to scrub everything. Sure, he can erase new footage of Nile and the Guard, but what can he do about Reddit threads and podcast episodes that are speculating something weird has happened? Maybe he could hack the sites and shut those things down, but honestly, that’s the last thing he’d want to do, because that only adds weight to the theory that Nile’s disappearance is a military coverup. So eventually he has to tell Andy what’s going on.
Andy, obviously, does not take the news well. However, she is also completely computer illiterate, because that’s Booker’s job and he’s the only one who ever bothered to learn what the internet is in any meaningful way. (She probably calls Booker for advice, and for the record, I think Booker would have no qualms about shutting down conspiracy threads, tinhats be damned, but Copley is too concerned about the consequences. He’s ex-CIA for crying out loud, he knows how it’ll look if they scrub every mention of Nile’s name from the internet.) Maybe she confers with Joe and Nicky but, let’s be honest, they’d be equally unhelpful. So at this point, she knows they have to bring in Nile.
But the thing about Nile is that she, too, knows how to use the internet (duh). Aside from her being a young millennial/digital native, we know from the cave scene where she’s giving Booker suggestions on how to track Copley that she clearly is even more computer savvy than the average person. And for that reason she almost definitely took over the day-to-day tech stuff after Booker’s exile. So I think it would be foolish to expect her to be unaware of what’s happening. She’s not contacting her family or posting on the message boards or anything, but she knows what’s up. So Copley and the team probably sit her down to “break the news,” but we know the girl does not have a poker face (see: literally shooting herself in the foot and not being able to play it cool whatsoever) and cracks immediately, telling them she’s seen everything about her case – she’s not interacting with any of it, she certainly didn’t instigate anything, but she knows. (And she is so goddamn proud of her brother.)
At this point, I’d like to pause and consider Nile’s role in the overall narrative of this movie. She’s set up as a foil to Andy, obviously, but she’s also a foil to Booker. Booker, who, like Andy, is a serious pessimist, but who, unlike Andy, still has very fresh memories and trauma associated with being the new kid, which have destroyed him. In his mind (and Andy’s), if Nile communicates with her family, she’ll become just like him in a century or two – bitter, alone, and stuck with her grief and memories of watching her family die and knowing they died resenting her. It’s a small sample size, but this is the only experience they have to go off of.
But it doesn’t have to be like that.
There’s been a lot of discussion of TOG being a fundamentally queer movie – a group of people brought together because of something inherent about themselves that is different, that must be hidden, that causes others to hate, fear, and reject them. Booker’s backstory is the archetypal traumatic “coming out” story – his family learns who he is, hate him for it, and attempt to cast him out of their lives. He’s stuck with his trauma, his pain, his loss, and it consumes him.
But what if Nile’s family would be the opposite? What if her “coming out” to them as immortal is met with acceptance, love, celebration? What if her family is just overjoyed to have her back, and they don’t care what the circumstances are? I'm reminded of this incredible post from @shitty-old-guard-deaths a while back, where Nile’s mother hits Booker with a frying pan because “my baby let me believe she was dead for FIVE YEARS based on your bad advice???” (which may or may not have inspired this whole tangent). Nile takes the advice of someone who did the same thing she wants to do because she doesn’t want to risk her family’s rejection. She wants the good memories with her family and is afraid that showing them her true self will bring her unbearable pain, forever replacing those memories. But, with high risk comes high reward.
Anyway. Nile and the team are trying to come up with a plan for how to handle this whole thing, but she’s not really participating because she’s too afraid to hope. Until finally, quickly, so she doesn’t lose her nerve, she suggests she reach out to them, knowing that, realistically, that’s the only solution before things snowball even further out of control. The team is shocked, but realize that she has a point. They decide that Copley should actually be the first point of contact, posing as a US government official to talk with them and test the waters.
So Copley goes to Nile’s family’s house to talk with her mom and brother. They’re probably distrustful and apprehensive, but nonetheless secretly ecstatic that their work has paid off. They talk and review all of the information that they’ve collected, including testimonials from the people on Nile’s base and recent sightings (along with photos) of Nile (with the same three people) over the last few years that people have sent them but they haven’t posted publicly. At this point, Copley’s like, yeah this is about to blow up, we gotta put our cards on the table. He convinces them to come with him to some safe house/black site/whatever he can get that is technologically impenetrable (I’m picturing them in like, an interrogation room at a police station kind of deal), takes their phones, locks the doors, and brings in Nile.
What follows is the most delightful reunion scene of all time, bringing Joe, Nicky, and even Andy to tears as they watch and listen from outside the room. With Copley’s help, Nile tells her mom and brother about her immortality and what’s been going on since she died (within reason, of course), and they are thrilled. They don’t understand why (because no one does) but they don’t question it and they see it as a gift from God – she’s been resurrected, she will live, and she has a purpose. Her mother and brother are so happy to see her again and are willing to agree with pretty much anything to stay in her life as long as they can.
So. They set up some complicated agreement (they bring in the other three for support/intimidation as needed) setting the terms of their relationship. They swear Nile’s family to secrecy, maybe bringing up the lab to show how high the stakes are, and they readily agree. They come up with some cover story for Nile’s brother to share on the message boards (maybe that the government has opened an investigation but because it’s an open case he has to shut it all down? Tells people to direct their tips somewhere else? Something to that effect). There’s still speculation, of course, but without Nile’s brother at the helm providing the energy, the hype dies down as news stories are wont to do without any movement. And Nile’s family goes to work for the team. The experience has taught them that Copley can’t possibly do everything himself, especially when it comes to social media, so Nile’s brother takes the lead on the day-to-day tracking/social media while Copley and her mom focus on finding jobs and scrubbing their traces afterward.
So there you have it: Nile gets to integrate her biological family into her found family and spend the rest of their lives with them as it should be, Copley gets some badly needed help managing the reality of social media, the team finally has a positive narrative surrounding outsiders Knowing About Them AND about interacting with people from their previous life, and the audience gets the happy ending to this very lovely and very queer story to counteract the pain associated with Booker’s family.
Plus, you know, I’m a sucker for both a good government conspiracy theory and for Nile getting every good thing she deserves.

Phantom Children Ch. 8
What's this? An update! Massive thanks to my betas for helping me get through this chapter <3
In Which: A few answers are given to the family and Danny is rudely awoken
[Side note: If you wanna know the general ages of the batfam, its listed in the AO3 version. I also talk about katanas in the end notes ^-^]
AO3 | Prologue | 7 | [ 8 ] | 9 DAMIAN INFORMED TODD—and Drake when he arrived on his bike sometime later on—that the boy whose face is plastered across the monitor was neither a picture of himself nor of Father.
Drake took one glance at the monitor and sighed, pressing his fingers against the bridge of his nose. “Just when I thought this day was getting better.”
“What, did that café on 5th finally let customers supersize their drink?”
“God that would be the dream, wouldn’t it?” Drake sighed wistfully. “Nah, but I did get a lead on where some of that stolen Cadmus tech might’ve ended up. I was gonna spend the night following up on it, but I guess we have to deal with,” he gestured to the monitor, “whatever this is.”
Todd leaned against the edge of the computer, arms crossed over the red bat insignia on his chest. “What are we dealing with this time, brat? A clone? An alternate universe counterpart? Magic shenanigans?”
Maybe. Perhaps. All of those were perfectly valid conclusions for the enigma that was Daniel James Fenton. (Why Fenton and not al Ghul? Or even Wayne?)
Damian, too, was a genetic experiment; a ‘test tube baby’ as Drake put it at times. Damian was born for greatness, created to be perfect. The perfect soldier. The perfect assassin. The perfect heir. Was this boy—Daniel—like him as well?
A failed one, then. Perhaps the precursor to Damian’s own existence. But that would not explain why the boy was allowed to exist for so long. His grandfather demanded perfection, especially from those of his own blood. If the boy was a failure, he would have been eliminated immediately, not sent to live with some eccentric scientists in the Midwest.
Damian was not naïve enough to think that his mother and grandfather did not keep secrets from him. On the contrary, he expected it. The League of Shadows dealt in secrets as often as it did in death. Certain information was worth its weight in gold, whether it was given or buried away.
But he could not help the sharp pang in his chest. A lightning strike, quick and electrifying at the notion that they kept secrets about their family from him.
His father’s face flashed in his mind. The shock turned into a slow, dawning horror. That flicker of light, of recognition, as he scrutinized the contents of the flash drive and cross-referenced it with a public database.
And grief.
Damian recognized the grief.
Alfred, too, nearly dropped his tray of fresh-baked cookies when he stepped in front of the monitor. His usual unflappable demeanor was momentarily broken at his father’s whispered “Sixteen years. Alfred— he’s sixteen years old.”
His father knew of the boy. He was allowed to know of Daniel when he was not allowed to know about Damian.
------
Grayson returned to the cave with a distinct lack of energy in his step. His mask dangled off the tips of his fingers, chin angled downwards and covered largely by his hand. For a split second, their eyes met. Grayson shifted his gaze away, scratching the back of his neck. Father told him, then. Damian wondered how much Father revealed to his favorite son.
Damian clucked his tongue and buried himself deeper into the chair, arms crossed and pointedly looking away. If it was not for his accursed ankle, he’d have headed out to the training ring to take his frustrations out on the dummies.
“Oh, thank god you’re here, Dickface. Damian’s completely out of it.”
Damian shot him a look. “Shut up, Todd.”
“Leave him alone, Jay. Is Tim back yet?”
Drake emerged from the changing room in a dark green shirt, a fresh cup of coffee in hand. He took one long sip before exhaling. “Yeah, I’m here.”
“O-kay…” He pressed his hands together, mouth thinned into a grim line. “Uh, hey Tim, glad to see you back safe. Bruce is coming down soon to explain some things.” He let out a deep sigh, carding a hand through his hair. “This kind of thing would probably be better with the girls around, but I—god, I don’t know.”
Todd raised an eyebrow. “Don’t know whether to call Steph and Cass in Hong Kong, or don’t know what’s going on?”
“Yes.”
------
When Father arrived, Pennyworth following dutifully behind him, it was with an aching slowness in his gait. His steps measured and precise, preternaturally quiet as he made his way to stand by Damian’s chair. Damian sat up straighter, shoulders squared and back an inch away from the backrest. The rest, even Todd, stood at attention; an ingrained habit among Robins and an amusing instinct even among the senior heroes of the Justice League when it came to facing the Batman.
His father kept a steady hand on Damian’s shoulder, and Damian, shamefully, leaned into the touch; his head inclined towards his father’s hand so much so that he could feel the ends of his hair being pushed up slightly as he brushed against his father’s forearm.
He spoke with his usual monotone, as if he was heading a Justice League meeting as opposed to unveiling the secrets surrounding that boy. He brought forward the few photos they obtained from the flash drive. “A few weeks ago, we were alerted of suspicious movement from the League of Shadows in Amity Park, Illinois. Their objectives are, as of now, unclear, though it appears to be tied to the death of Amity Park resident, Daniel Fenton.”
One photo was a standard ID picture people get for their driver’s license, the lighting deliberately horrible so that any attempt to look decent would always end in failure. Another photo was a little better; a candid scene of him chatting with two others his age, a Caucasian girl in gothic-style clothes and an African-American holding a sleek, but still very outdated PDA. His blue eyes crinkled at the corners, hand reaching up to his face to stifle a laugh. There were other photos like this, some candid, others posed. At the forefront of each, a boy that looked too much like his father, too much like Damian.
His father glanced at the photos. He shut his eyes and when he opened them again, he fixed them on some distant stalactite in the Cave. “Around six months ago, Daniel was pronounced dead in a vehicular accident. A body was present, but according to police reports, he was identified via his driver’s license as opposed to any kind of DNA profiling.” He leaned over Damian’s chair to pull up a profile of Masters. “Our source—Vladimir Masters, mayor of Amity and a friend of the Fenton family—indicated his belief that Daniel is actually alive. I am inclined to agree.”
“He’s your son, isn’t he,” Drake said, more of a statement than a question.
Father gave a curt nod. “I cannot say for certain until I can perform a DNA test, but I highly suspect that to be the case.”
“First the demon spawn, now this. Great.” Todd made a hand motion towards the screen. “You know, Bruce, not knowing you have a kid once might be a coincidence, but twice? How do you do that?”
“As of three hours ago, I was still under the impression that my son never made it to term.”
“What?”
“Over sixteen years ago I was involved in a mission that put Ra’s and I on the same side. During that time, Talia and I entered a relationship that resulted in a pregnancy. Though initially ecstatic, she eventually led me to believe she miscarried the child and pushed me away. For what ends, I do not know, but trust me Jason, if I knew—” He paused, the hand that was not on Damian’s shoulder curled into a tight fist.
Father pinched the bridge of his nose. “Why she hid it from me then doesn’t matter. Why Talia wants him back now is important. Judging from Daniel’s records, he was adopted into the Fenton family as an infant and has since lived a seemingly normal life as a civilian. His adoptive parents, Jack and Maddie Fenton, are brilliant scientists and engineers focused on the field of paranormal studies. Eccentricities aside, they have zero connections to the League of Assassins or any other concerning parties.”
“So why now?” Dick asked, shifting his concerned gaze from Bruce to the static picture of Danny’s tired smile. “Why, after all this time, decide that now would be the best time to recover him?”
------
Danny’s experienced plenty of rude awakenings before, but waking up at the ass-crack of dawn to avoid his kidnapper-slash-assassin-slash-biological-mom launching a surprise attack takes the fucking cake. He can’t believe he’s saying this, but thank god for all those late night ghost attacks that conditioned him to be a light sleeper. And, of course, the League’s insistence that everyone be in optimal condition regardless of how little sleep you actually got.
Danny kicked Talia off of him, ripping his blanket away before scrambling to his feet. Seriously, if the universe decided to spontaneously give him powers again, he’d really like an upgrade to his ghost senses, please and thank you. Something that works on humans and not just ghosts. Like spidey-senses. He’d really, really like some spidey-senses.
“Your reaction times have improved considerably,” Talia said.
He eyed the katana sheathed beside his bedroll. “Thanks. Who could have guessed that constantly challenging someone to a spar in the unholy hours of morning would make them paranoid to sleep too much? Really, how am I supposed to grow taller at this rate? ” If he could just get it--
She smiled, taking a step forward. “Prepare yourself.”
“Heh.” Danny stepped further away from Talia, keeping his back to the mouth of the cave. One hand stretched in front of him and the other, coated in a green light, was kept hidden behind his back. “Am I actually gonna get some answers today?”
“Let us make it interesting. Last 10 minutes against me and I shall tell you more about your brother.” Talia twirled her blade. “If you happen to draw blood, you may ask any one thing of me.”
“Anything?”
“Within reason.”
His face caught between a grimace and a smile. He’d rather be sleeping right now, but if he had to be awake, then he’d better make the most of it. “Deal.”
Talia’s smile dropped. She veered her body to the right, barely dodging the streak of bright green that whizzed from behind her. The ectoplasmic energy that surrounded the katana bled away as the handle connected with Danny’s outstretched hand.
She quickly glanced back at Danny’s bedding. Beside it lay an empty sheath. “You have telekinesis?”
He shrugged. “It comes and goes.” Yeah, no way was Danny gonna admit that seven-out-of-ten-times he forgot that he had telekinesis. Besides, that shit was hard to do when he wasn’t Phantom.
“A surprise attack from behind is a sound strategy, Daniel. Though it’ll take a lot more than that to harm me.”
Danny pointed to the side of his cheek. “Are you sure about that?”
Talia frowned. She reached up to her face. Her fingers brushed against her cheek and came away with a thin streak of blood.
Danny grinned, pointing his blade at his opponent. “First blood goes to me.”
------
Fact: most fights don’t last long. An average street fight could last anywhere between 25 to 40 seconds, and sword fights rarely last over a minute. Like Talia said, the goal of a fight was to end it with as few injuries to oneself as possible. Humans, even the most skilled ones, can rarely last long in a fight. Prolonged combat is suicide; it makes you tired, makes your muscles heavy. It’s nothing like what Hollywood would have you believe.
Even with Danny’s own enhanced stamina and Talia holding back, he couldn’t last a full ten-minute spar. If Talia didn’t finish him within twenty-five seconds, then he’d fall by his own human limitations.
But the goal wasn’t to spar continuously for ten minutes.
He only had to last that long.
Danny sprinted out of the cave. The sun barely peeked out of the horizon, a thin line of deep orange breaking apart the wide expanse of blue-black sky above. He couldn’t see shit; great news since that meant there’s a good chance Talia couldn’t either, but that doesn’t fix the fact that he can’t see.
Nearly stumbling on the ice, Danny veered to the left. The edges of the lake stopped at towering rocks twice Danny’s height, leaving little room for cover. Though if he remembered correctly, there should be a few crevices here and there to hide in.
“You’ll have to be faster than that, Daniel.”
Shit—
Danny stopped. He brought his sword up to parry Talia’s strike and twisted away, putting distance between them.
Well, so much for just avoiding her for 10 minutes.
He adjusted his grip, keeping his sword steady and eyes trained on Talia as they circled each other. Danny lunged with an overhead strike. Talia used one hand to block the downswing by gripping his wrists. She thrust her sword forward, the tip harshly poking Danny’s abdomen.
“Less than three minutes.” Talia let his wrist go, Danny’s arms slumping to his sides.
He sighed as he sheathed his sword. “Damn, I thought I’d last longer than that.”
“You made a good effort,” Talia assured him. “Putting as much distance between us at the beginning was a good strategy. You recognized the win conditions immediately and attempted a battle of attrition.” She placed a hand on his shoulder. “I am very proud of you habibi, especially as you managed to draw first blood.”
A warmth grew in Danny’s stomach at the words, heating his cheeks. Sheepishly, he scratched the back of his head. “I wasn’t entirely sure that would work, honestly.”
“It was clever; half a second later and you might have even killed me. You are an al Ghul through and through” She brushed his hair out of his face. “What would you like as your prize, then?”
Danny’s heart clenched. He frowned, dropping his arm to his side. If I was such an al Ghul, then why didn’t you keep me? The question lodged itself in his throat, stifling his thoughts. It was something he’d been wondering for a while, actually, in the moments of solitude he had at the compound. Talia, during their training, would always remark at his potential. How talented he was, how adaptable he was, how much greater he would have been if he had been trained at a younger age.
Well then, why wasn’t he? Why did she give him up?
But each time he tried to ask, his tongue would turn to lead and the moment would pass, the question still left unsaid and simmering at the back of his mind. A Pandora’s Box that held none of the world’s evil but all of Danny’s possible shortcomings.
He could ask the question now.
He could.
He didn’t.
“Why did you take me?”
Talia tilted her head. “It is because you’re my son.”
“No. Not that. It has to be something more than that. You had sixteen years to come back for me—or, hell, you could have just never left me.” His breath hitched, fingers mussing his hair and hiding his eyes. “Why else did you take me?”
“It is true that there was more than one reason why we decided to retrieve you from Amity Park. One of which is because you are my son and an heir of the Demon’s Head.” Talia stilled. The dark skies of dawn made it impossible for him to read her. “The second reason was to protect you.”
“You kidnapped me…to protect me?”
“Knowledge of the ghosts of Amity have spread through the more insidious parts of the world. There are many out there who would pay exorbitant fees to study one of you or to use you.”
Use him? What did she mean by—
Oh.
Ghosts—Amity Park’s brand of ghosts—were a new element that the world had to contend with. Amity Park might have a crime rate of zero but that wasn’t the case everywhere else. Theft, assault, murder; the world was rampant with crimes and criminals clawing their way to the very top. Having ghosts, even ones with the most basic powerset, would be a huge advantage.
“There’s no way that would work,” Danny insisted. “Most ghosts just want to be left alone, and the ones that want to wreak havoc would never work with humans. The only reason they even work with halfas like me at times is because they still consider us as ghosts.”
“If my sources are to be believed, ghosts might not even get a choice.”
Danny’s blood curdled in his veins.
No.
Someone’s found a way to control ghosts.

'Lonely ghost serie'
An interesting night- part II
Tw⚠️: swearing
Corpse stretched as he set up his work station, Pewds was starting another live stream and invited him on and since sleep won't show up anytime soon, he hopped on without much thinking.
He smiled when his friends started to greet each other and him.
"Guys, you saw the video I send you ,right?" Lily asked.
"Yeah but I couldn't get in touch with ghost ,her friend was kind to let me know she might not feel comfortable doing a livestream with complete strangers. "Jack said as the others puffed in disappointment.
"That sucks. I wanted to see if she could have kill us all." Grease spoke as he opens a can of soda.
"You wanted to be killed by her?!"
They laughed as Grease quickly defended himself.
"Hey-Hey, to be killed by someone with that skill is a privilege."
"Simp." Jason concluded.
Their laughter ran wilde as Grease again began to shout.
"Hey,Lily?"
"Yes, Rae?"
"You been quiet. Something's wrong?"
"Whenever you are ready." She simply said, confusing them.
"W-What? Lily are you okay-"
"Hello,gents!"
It was her.
"GHOST?"
"Oh my god..."
"HOW but Jack said-"
"Guys ,guys ,please don't overwhelm." Lily again said, calming the both parties.
"Right ,sorry. Anyway, top of morning to yah ,ghost."
He could hear her swallowing her nerves before she cleared her voice, tingles ran down his back when the Reaper like tune hit his headphones.
"Hello!...This is awkward. Sorry."
They giggled with her as she moved in her chair.
"Ghost? "
"Yeah?"
"Your friend said you will not feel comfortable enough to join us today."
"Well, it's raining so that puts me at ease and your friend, Lily, was very convincing on bring me here."
"*giggle* I just showed you picture of my friends' pets."
"...As I said before, very convincing."
They always laughed especially when the stranger proved to be funny enough to bring that chuckle out of them.
"So ready to rock?"
"Let's roll."
————————————————————
The match was entertaining with couple of close calls, too close for your liking. Corpse was on you the entire time so to pay him for his diligence, you killed him first as he struggled to swipe that damn key card.
Then Jason, then Jack, Rae proved to be a bit harder to kill but you got her in O2, Lily was easy, Sykkuno was all confuse as he watched the crewmates die with him doing nothing, Pewds and Mark were a game of venting and killing swiftly. Speed was the key of your success of killing them all.
You could see they have their microphones on but no one said a thing.
The mischievous smirk that was plastered on your face grew when sounds of confusion came from Jack. Always the loud ones reveal the most.
"Whaaaat?"
"What the fuck?"
"I literally didn't have time to even kill any of you. Ghost came in like: slash ,slash, kill, kill."
You finally cracked at the ridiculous sounds Sykkuno made, a poor imitation of the sabers from Star wars.
"Hahaha"
He heard your laugh, he like the sound of it , the easiness and the innocence it held even though you killed all of them without mercy. What he didn't know if he liked was the stirring in his stomach cause by it. The tightness in his breath, the long smile and the bouncing of his legs as a result of hearing it.
He just shook his curls before paying attention to the group again, you were being put in the spotlight, something he cringed at as he recalled the painful experiences he had while being put under light.
"So, ghost?"
"Yes ,Jason?"
A whine came from the man known now as a simp for deep voices. You giggled, shaking your head and screaming when the black pair of headphones fell down your lap. Luckily you had the mic muted. That will be embarrassing...
You fixed your long hair, putting it behind your ears careful to not tug on your fresh piercings , your headphones back on the top ,you dived right back.
"Can you tell us about yourself?"
"Hmm..what do you want to know?"
You heard him sucking in a breath and to be honest you couldn't blame him, the voice was hot.
"Um ...anything. "
You giggled half embarrassed, half amusement by the pitch his voice turned to ,excited to hear whatever you may answer.
"Oh,okay. Um...My piercings hurt. My right leg is bouncing like crazy and um...I crave jelly candy."
"Piercings?"
"Yeah, my pal just did on my right three helix piercings: forward, mid and low. Plus the industrial on my left ear iches a bit."
"Oh, I am sorry."
"Nothing to be sorry about, Jas. Thanks for asking by the way."
"Oh, don't worry. Do you have any others?"
"Um..yeah. On the right ear ,I have..um. helix , flat, rook and upper. Left ahh..industrial,helix and orbital."
"Wow, th-that's a lot."
"Hah, I just told you about my ears."
A choke cane from him ,probably he was drinking something. It had ice though, you could hear the ice hitting the metal of the glass.
The man started to choke and cough ,making you and the others who listened patiently on your convo worried.
"Easy there ,mate."
"Jay, you good?"
"Easy there ,buddy."
"I-I'm *cough* I am fine. You have MORE?!"
"Yeah ,three on the upper part of my right eyebrow and a ring on the left one."
"Jesus. " He said, calming himself at last.
"Yeah,*giggle*. I also plan to slit my tongue in two."
"Oh, yeah cool.WHAT?!"
————————————————————
The next game you were imposter again but this time Corpse was your sidekick. Or were you his?
Anyway, you decided to let him do more of the killing, believe it or not , you weren't the blood thirsty monster the chat thought of you, all in a joking manner of course. Sabotage and let Corpse do his Kiss of death. Seeing couple of his streams ,you hoped he wasn't too nervous.
"Alright guys, ghost is imposter with us so this time I have to be more careful. They will probably suspect her to be imposter again . Sorry I can't see your message, I need to concentrate on this."
Proving his theory , ghost just sabotaged as she did fake tasks, being a guardian of Lily as he killed so far Mark and Toast.
"W-Where was the body?" His voice came of a bit more nervous then usual.
"In the nav." Dave answered.
"You good ,Corpse?"
He heard you ask ,you were more observant than the others who either lost themselves in the safety feeling of the match or the euphoria of the game, you always pointed suspicious behaviours of the others when they accused him of being imposter. He liked that, gave him time to calm his raging heart.
"Y-Yeah..*cough* I mean yeah, I am good. H-How about you?"
Fuck...
He didn't even want to catch a glimpse of the chat ,having a hunch of what they may be inferring.
"You seem shaky, Corpse. Something happened?"
He didn't needed to see Sean's face to know it will matched a lenny one. Finding an excuse so he is spared of the teasing and/or the allegations he is imposter, is a must.
"Yeah, I am just...ah...freezing. It's cold here. Brr. Brr."
They laughed at his poor attempt to sound like a freezing popsicle, your laugh put him more at ease. He knew however that his attempt of shifting the suspension failed, too bad he wanted to play more with you. I guess the roles are switching.
"He sound sus ,guys. Should we vote him out?"
"Wow, Lily. Thanks."
The girl giggling only stopped when you started speaking.
"He's not sus, guys. He's just a dork ,a stick with crippling anxiety and honestly same."
God, he wished he could fist bump you right now.
"More like a branch but who we voting then?" Sean asked.
" SPEEDRUN!"
Felix sealed his faith however. Your work only left him flustered and with a derpy smile , his honour lost in the vacuum space.
...............CORPSE was ejected.............
"Well shit. Anyway ,guys. Let me see what you been talking about? And I better not see any 'SIMP' comments. "
————————————————————
"How?! How the fuck?! You tricked me!" Lily screamed at you for your betrayal.
"Wow, so now I have big trust issues with ghost." Grease announced.
"Deep mommy, no." Jason said ,bringing a laugh out of you for the thousand of time.
You started to like this guy, he and Corpse will be spared next time you are imposter.
"Sorry ,guys-"
"Who told you,you are allowed to do that?" Pewds shouted at you in a heated but not menacing tone.
"You didn't let me finish."
You took a sip out of your ice tea.
"RIP to ya'll but I am different. Not my fault the only guy I take advices from is Doomguy. And as the legend would say: Rip and tear."
"OH MY FUCK-"
You lowered your mic as they screamed in disbelief ,Corpse didn't said anything however. You were curious as to why?
"Corpse?"
"Yeah ,baby?"
Woah. That caught you out of guard. Like the warmth in your olive cheeks and the deliciously painful and frightening feeling of twisting in your stomach.
"Um..."
You blinked, no words head's empty.
"Oh, shit. Sorry, ghost. I didn't meant to make you feel weird."
"No,no. I am good. Ey, Jas?"
"Yes ,hun?"
"Do you take applications for your Corpse fan club?"
Jesus, what is this night even?

one word prompt: Inferno
I think you’re the only person so far who understands what ‘one word’ means sgjagsjgs
Here you go! Have some plasma angst, with a side of platonic oppo. (:
Tw: burns, major character injury
“Kai!” Cole calls. “On your eight!”
With a start, Kai realizes that he didn’t notice the guy sneaking up on him. He quickly spins counter-clockwise and throws a punch, easily sending the gang member to the ground.
“Thanks!” He shouts back, flashing the other a quick smile before returning his focus to the fight.
Around a half hour ago, the team had received a call about a gang fight. Obviously, they tried to stop them, but it had somehow turned into fighting anyway.
Glancing around, he mutters a quiet curse. Looks like he managed to get himself separated from the team… and it’s probably going to be hell trying to get back without getting shot.
And he can say this from experience: Bullet wounds are a nightmare, both in pain and in time it takes to heal.
Oh, whatever. He’s been through worse.
Narrowing his eyes, he quickly jumps into spinjitzu to avoid a particularly nasty slash of a knife. Looks like at least some of them use melee weapons.
With an eye roll, he grabs the nearest goon and throws him into a group of them, not even trying to muffle his snicker when they all topple over. These guys clearly don’t have a ton of experience.
He scans the area again, trying to figure out where the others are. Did he-
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” he grumbles, tightening his grip on his katana. He’s basically on the other side of the battlefield- it’s going to take forever to get back.
“Kai! Hang on, I’m coming!” A voice shouts over the commotion, and he whips his head around to look at the source.
It’s Jay- because of course it is. His boyfriend always seems to be trying to look out for him, even when he’s made it clear he doesn’t need the help.
“I’m good! Stay with the others!” He calls, hoping- but not expecting- for the other to listen.
Even with the distance separating them, he can clearly see the look that Jay gives him. “Yeah, sure, ‘Mr. I-never-need-anyone’s-help’ is totally good when he’s completely surronDE-“
He’s cut off. A bullet to the shoulder sends him falling to the ground with an unholy scream of pain.
Kai freezes in place, watching in horror.
The split second it takes for him to collapse is more than enough time for his emotions to build and snap, sending sheer uncontrollable rage flooding through him.
And everything goes red.
With a shout of his own, he can feel the fire wreathed around him, can feel the heat in his veins, can feel the way everything around him crumbles and falls under the intensity of the flames.
He can’t think. There’s no real thoughts in his head, everything is blank- there’s no room for anything other than the inferno in his mind.
Faintly, he can hear shouting, screaming, but he doesn’t know what’s being said- or even if there are any words at all.
There’s blood. He’s not sure who’s or where it came from, but the ground is slick with it, the crimson liquid almost instantly drying from the heat radiating off of him.
Abruptly, he’s thrown to the ground, hands pinned against the scorched concrete.
“Kai!”
With a sharp breath, he recognizes Zane holding him down, his ice powers and metal skin preventing him from being burnt alive.
And it’s the realization of what the fire is doing that makes him get a grasp on it, to force himself to push the flames back down, to suffocate them with his own willpower.
Panting, he can feel the adrenaline racing through his veins, and after a moment, he tries to push the nindroid off. “Where’s Jay?!”
Much to his dismay, Zane doesn’t release him. “Take a deep breath,” he instructs, voice tense with several unreadable emotions.
Out of the corner of his eye, he can see the bright blue of his boyfriend’s gi, and he can feel the fire starting to build up again. “I need to see him! Please, Zane, I- I need to help him! I-“
“You’ve done enough, Kai!” Cole snarls from somewhere nearby. Head whipping around, he sees the earth ninja a little to his right, jaw and fists clenched tightly.
“Cole!” Zane snaps. “Calm down!”
“I’m sorry, did you not see what he just did?!” The noirette seems to be barely keeping himself in check as he looks over in the direction Kai last saw Jay. “He-“
“He was trying to help!” The nindroid relaxes his grip some, and Kai takes the opportunity to shove him off and run, run towards Jay, to see what happened to him, to see if he’s okay, to-
He stops in his tracks.
Lloyd and Nya are starting to try and pick him up and put him on a stretcher that connects to the Bounty, to lift him up to where he’ll be able to get medical attention.
The gunshot wound is barely even noticeable now. He has something much, much worse.
Horror floods through him as he recognizes the result of his own powers, what the fire that he had so willingly embraced had done.
Jay is covered in burns, his scorched skin twisted and charred, his blue gi covered in black patches from the way the flames had burned it with his skin, his-
He flinches when he feels a cold hand grab his shoulder. Shakily, he looks over to see Zane again, the nindroid holding him with a tight grip. “Take a deep breath,” he repeats, voice firmer this time.
This time, Kai forces himself to follow the advice, breathing slowly as he tries to ignore the turmoil of emotions under his skin.
Shaking, he can feel the last of the heat in his veins flicker out, the fire finally fading under the shock of what he did.
He looks back at Zane again, unable to get out what he wants to ask, but desperately hoping that the ice ninja will understand.
“He’ll be alright,” the nindroid assures softly, the calm steadiness in his tone letting Kai begin to get control of the pain in his chest.
Unable to speak, he grabs the other, burying his face in his chest, letting the cold assure him that the flames are gone, that he’s not going to do anything else.
Even though he seems startled at first, Zane quickly wraps his arms around him, muttering quiet reassurances.
In that moment, Kai finally has a full, coherent thought.
He hurt Jay.
He almost killed him because of his rage.
He always hurts the people closest to him, doesn’t he?
Grip tightening, he struggles to get a hold of his breathing, to get the aching in his chest to a level where he can accept that.
They both pretend not to notice the tears that form.

Looks Like Someone Picked a Whole Bushel Of Oopsie Daisies
Chapter Eleven: Making the Most of a Weekend
I knowwwww I’m the worst author ever I’m sorry blah blah blah. But! This chapter is filthy so at least it’s a fun one, right? Also, the Airbnb they’re staying at can be viewed here. Now, onto the chapter!
You’ve been gone so long, I forgot what you feel like, but I’m not gonna think about that right now. I’m gonna keep getting underneath you, I’m gonna keep getting underneath you, and all our friends want us to fall in love.- Panic! at the Disco, The Good, the Bad, and the Dirty
Being separated from one’s soulmate was both emotionally and physically exhausting. It was also really, really depressing. It was just like, why bother? Why bother getting out of bed? Why bother going to school? What was the point? Dipper wouldn’t be there, and she wouldn’t get to see him again for awhile.
Whelp. At least her parents never monitored anything but her texts. She didn’t text Dipper, so, to their knowledge, she wasn’t in contact with him.
Not that they ever got a look at her phone, anyway. She was never home enough for them to see. The longest she’d spent at home at a time was one night. She never ate with her parents, and she still hadn’t spoken to them. She wasn’t planning on it, either. She didn’t have anything to say to them, and she certainly wasn’t interested in what they had to say.
Rolling over in Kristin’s bed (Kristin’s was the previous evening’s sleepover house of choice), Mabel grabbed her phone off the nightstand.
Dipper had messaged her. He usually did when he woke up.
Are you free this weekend?
It was a three day weekend starting the day after Valentine’s Day, which meant Mabel was feeling the separation hard, and therefore had a hot date with Ben & Jerry (both of whom were currently waiting eagerly for her in Kristin’s freezer). Okay, so it was more of a cold date, but, y’know. Semantics, right? Therapy was great, but eating several pints of Chocolate Therapy was cheaper and more fun.
So… technically she was free. But why was Dipper asking?
Yeah, why?
Okay, cool. Come to this address once you’re out of school. Go around back when you get there. Okay?
He typed out an address she didn’t recognize. It wasn’t too far from Kristin’s, but why would Dipper want her to go there? Regardless, she texted back a confused okay and left it at that. Sitting up in bed, she scratched her scalp lightly and looked over at Kristin, who was sleeping with her mouth wide open.
She poked her friend’s cheek. “Hey.”
Kristin stirred but didn’t wake. Naturally, Mabel poked her again, slightly harder. “Hey!” She raised her voice a bit that time.
“What?” Kristin grumbled blearily, blinking her eyes open. Her black hair was matted, and what had once been expertly applied eyeliner and mascara was giving her the usual racoon eyes. Not that Kristin minded, of course. Yesterday’s eyeliner can be made into today’s smokey eye, after all.
“Can you drive me somewhere after school?”
Kristin propped herself up on her arms and blinked up at Mabel. “Depends on where it is, I guess. Why, where you going?”
“I dunno, some-“ Mabel’s phone chimed, signaling another message from Dipper.
Oh, and bring enough stuff to last you through Sunday.
Mabel blinked and lifted her phone up to show Kristin the message. Kristin’s eyes narrowed against the brightness of the phone screen, then widened. She sat up abruptly, then snatched the phone from Mabel’s hand. She scrolled up a bit, reading their most recent messages, and handed Mabel’s phone back to her after a moment, a knowing smirk on her face.
“He’s taking you on a sex retreat,” Kristin said matter-of-factly.
“A- a what now?”
“A sex retreat,” her friend repeated. “Y’know, it’s a three day weekend right after Valentine’s Day so he’s whisking you away somewhere to fuck your brains out.”
“That is…” Mabel was going to say it was ridiculous, but then she thought about it for a moment. Dipper had a car. Neither of their Grunkles would take issue with him coming down to visit her; it was their parents that had an issue with them being soulmates. “A very real possibility, actually,” she finished.
“Oh, it’s totally what he’s doing. So, to answer your question,” Kristin got out of bed and walked towards her bathroom. “Yes, I will absolutely drive you to go on a sex retreat with your soulbro, no matter how far away it is.”
Checking Google Maps, Mabel said, “it’s fifteen minutes from school.”
Kristin grinned. “Badass! Pack up your shit, homegirl. I ain’t driving you back here before you go.” She glanced down at Mabel’s legs. “And maybe shave again before we head out. Don’t want any stubble the first time you see him after this long, right?”
Mabel blushed. “Right, guess not.”
Kristin patted her cheek with another smile. “Cheer up, buttercup. Today’s the day your va-jay-jay is back in business.”
Mabel grinned back. “Fingers crossed!”
“Exactly, now hit the showers!”
———————————————————————
When Mabel stepped out of Kristin’s car onto the sidewalk, she didn’t know what to make of the yellow Victorian house. She sent Dipper a quick here as she went around back, as he’d had told her to that morning, only to find a small rock garden in the backyard of the house, with a… a vardo? It sure looked like a vardo. The fanciest one she’d ever seen in her life. It was red and purple with a small porch, and it appeared to be quite long, too. There was a set of slender red double doors with round stained glass windows on either side, and the whole thing looked intricately carved and painted.
After a moment, the doors opened, and out stepped Dipper. He beamed at the sight of her, and she nearly dropped the duffel bag she had hoisted over her shoulder.
Scratch that, she actually did drop it, squealing and running over to him to jump into his arms. It was a bit difficult because the wagon-house-thingy was on top of a wooden platform that she had to almost trip over before reaching him, but in the span of a few seconds, she had her arms wrapped around him again and she buried her face in his neck, breathing in his scent.
Mabel stood there for several seconds, trying to melt into his skin. A warmth had flooded her veins at the sight of him. She’d forgotten what it felt like to have him close, what he smelled like. She’d just decided she needed an oxygen tank full of Dipper-smell when he spoke, his lips against her scalp.
“I missed you.”
Mabel pulled back enough to look at him. She hadn’t stopped smiling since she’d seen him, and it was kind of hurting her face, but she didn’t care. He was looking at her adoringly, and she giggled. She was just so freakin’ happy to see him. Mabel couldn’t remember the last time she’d been that happy.
No, wait, yes she could. The last time she’d been that happy was right before her parents stormed into the hotel room like ruining everything was a contest with a billion dollar prize.
Well, whatever. They could suck it. Mabel was too busy to care about her parents and whatever lame-ass contests they’d entered.
“I missed you, too,” she finally told him. “But what’re you doing here?” She glanced around a bit. “Actually, what am I doing here?”
He leaned down to kiss her forehead. “It’s an Airbnb,” he said, taking her hand and pulling away from her. “After a fair amount of begging and no small amount of guilt tripping, Grunkle Stan agreed to pay for a three day weekend stay for us.”
He pushed open the intricate red doors and stepped inside, pulling her along after him. She followed after him, her shoes sinking into a plush rug, and her mouth dropped open.
Directly inside the doorway, there was what appeared to be a kitchen, albeit a small one; the cabinets were white with light brown countertops, a hammered copper kitchen sink, two actual stained glass windows (like, it looked like there were actual separate panes of glass for each change in color and shape), and several additional copper kitchen stuff throughout the tiny kitchen. It was more of a hallway than anything else.
Mabel rushed past Dipper excitedly, eager to see what lay beyond the kitchen-slash-hallway, and squealed again. “Eeeeeeee this place is crazy!”
“I knew you’d like it,” he laughed. “I’m gonna go grab your bag, be right back.”
“Kay!” she called over her shoulder, eager to get acquainted with her new favorite place ever.
Okay, so maybe it was her new favorite place ever primarily due to Dipper’s presence, but it was also really flippin’ cool. Directly across the narrow hallway, there was a door that, when opened, led to a very cramped bathroom. Cramped it may be, but it was also hella fancy. The walls were made of tiles fashioned from dark reflective glass, there was a tiny white sink sticking out directly below a window with a mirror fastened to the wood of the window frame, with a stained glass window directly beside the regular one. There was a toilet that had another stained glass window above it, as well as a regular window directly beside it, this one with a gold-colored curtain hanging over it. The shower had a black curtain in front of it but, when pulled aside, it revealed another stained glass window (yes, three for one tiny bathroom). The shower head was a waterfall-type situation, but it also had one of those handheld ones, which she knew from personal experience would be easier to rinse out her hair with.
“You all good in here, Mabes?” Dipper called, and she heard the thunk of her bag being dropped.
Fingers crossed her toiletries hadn’t made a mess all over her clothes.
She stuck her head out of the bathroom and looked over at him as he shut the doors behind him. “Uh, dude, I’ve only seen the kitchen and the bathroom and I’m pretty sure this whole thing is amazeballs.”
He grinned and stepped over to her. “I’m glad you like it, but was it really necessary for you to pack bricks?” He rubbed the shoulder he’d hoisted her bag over.
“Don’t be such a baby, Dippin Dots,” she said with an exaggerated eye roll and sashayed away to inspect the rest of the wagon-thingy.
Just beyond the countertops of the kitchen, there was a tall set of shelves that went to the ceiling, containing various kitchen-y items, including a microwave (which, good, because Mabel was seventeen and leftovers were her BFFs), and directly across from the shelves there was a fridge, which was also good, because as a living creature, Mabel required sustenance in order to survive.
The hallway ended, opening up into a more spacious area with a table outcropping from the wall directly beyond the set of tall kitchen shelves with two nice-looking folding chairs. There was also a set of white cabinets that started at the height of the fridge and descended almost like stairs. Against the back wall was a large wrap-around couch, and the cushions were purple (which was awesome, obvi), and there were hanging potted plants and more windows, too, including two more stained glass ones, and if she looked up…
Holy cheese puffs, was that a chandelier? Upon closer inspection, it turned out that yes, it was most definitely a chandelier, and a mighty fancy one at that, by the looks of things.
“Hoooooookay, brosephina, this is a pretty snazzy location we have found ourselves in,” Mabel said.
“Well,” Dipper began as he stepped up behind her, “I figured you deserved something nice.” He wrapped his arms around her middle and nuzzled her hair.
“Errrrr. Okay then. No issues with that here, lemme tell ya.” Then a thought occurred to her. This was a very nice house-wagon-whatsit, don’t get her wrong, but if they were gonna be there through Sunday, where were they supposed to sleep? Or… do anything else? Would he even want to do anything else? Never mind that. “Soooooo where are we supposed to, like…” she trailed off.
“Bed’s in a loft,” he said into her hair, his arms tightening around her waist. “Up those stairs.” He pointed a finger at the cabinets she’d noted earlier. Huh. So they really were stairs, then.
“Right, so, um…”
Ugh. Why was she so damn nervous? It was irritating. This was her twin, her soulmate, her boyfriend! He had literally been inside her! She had no reason to be nervous!
She was, though, and she didn’t really know how to voice what she wanted.
Kiss me. Touch me. Get your dick inside me, like, freakin’ yesterday, dude.
“W- would you like to see it?” His voice was awkward, and he sounded almost as nervous as she felt. “The bed, I mean.”
Mabel nodded and he pulled away from her, blushing furiously, and she tried not to giggle. Dipper rolled his eyes. “Shut up, just c’mon.”
“I didn’t say anything!” she insisted as he grabbed her hand.
“I could hear you thinking,” he countered, leading her up the cabinets-slash-stairs.
She was still giggling through her nervousness when they reached the top of the stairs. The bed was a mattress directly on the floor with a striped comforter.
Hesitantly, Mabel sat on the bed. Dipper knelt down in front of her. He was looking at her lips when he took her hand again.
“We don’t have to do anything if you don’t want to.” His voice was soft, like he was afraid he’d scare her away or something.
Mabel remembered what Kristin had said about sex retreats and being whisked away to have her brains fucked out.
And then she remembered that no, Dipper could not, in fact, read her mind.
“Why would you think I don’t wanna do anything?” Had. Had he never encountered a mirror? Seventeen years of existence and the boy had never encountered a mirror. What were the chances? He shrugged. “Have you even seen yourself, Dip?”
“Huh?”
She forced her nerves down. He wanted her. She knew he did. She just needed to reassure him that she wanted him just as much. “You’re really freakin’ sexy, bro.”
He smiled hesitantly. “So, is it okay if I…?”
“Look, man,” Mabel said, “if you try a thing and I’m not about it, I’ll let ya know, but otherwise, go for it.”
“Okay, if you’re sure.”
“Uh, I am absotively posolutely sure.”
Grinning, Dipper leaned in to kiss her, and she smiled against his lips when he did. “I missed you,” she murmured against him.
He moved closer to her, pressing his body into hers. “I missed you, too,” he told her. “Now, I gotta be honest with you here, Mabes.” He pulled back a bit to look at her very, very seriously.
“Oh… kay?”
“This outfit,” he glanced down at her shorts and shirt. It was too hot for a sweater, so her top was light and breezy. It also showed off a bit of boobage, so there was that. “It’s cute, I like it and all, but I’d like it a lot more if it were on the floor.”
“Hmm…” she said thoughtfully. “On one condition.” She held up a finger.
“What’s that?”
“I’m only taking my clothes off if you take yours off, too. All’s fair in love and war, buddy-o.”
He grinned cheekily at her. “Is that right? And which is this?”
She shrugged. “Both, prolly.”
“Fair enough,” Dipper said with a chuckle before he pulled back to strip out of his clothes as fast as he possibly could. She was so busy watching him pull his shirt off that she totally forgot she was supposed to take her own clothes off, too. He paused before dropping his shirt to the floor. “Mabellllllllll,” he whined. “You said you’d take your clothes off, c’mon!”
“Right!” She started, almost surprised. “Right, right, sorry, my b.” Pulling her shirt over her head while simultaneously kicking off her sneakers at the heels, Mabel lay back on the bed, unbuttoning her shorts and lifting her butt to shimmy out of them. She wasn’t paying much attention to Dipper at that exact moment, or the way his eyes were wide and glued to her newly exposed skin, but when she finally got the shorts over her hips and down her legs, flinging them away from her with a flick of her foot, she looked up at him, and he was…
Whelp. He was totally nekkid, wasn’t he? She’d seen plenty of pictures lately (had a whole app she kept them in on her phone, even), but pictures on a phone screen ain’t got nothin’ on seeing her bro-bro in person.
“Looks like somebody’s happy to see me,” she grinned nervously at him.
“Gee, I wonder why,” he said sarcastically. “It’s almost like my soulmate is laying on a bed mostly naked right in front of me.” His eyes focused on hers for a moment before drifting back over her body again. “Which, by the way, you should be totally naked.”
“Fair enough,” she agreed, sitting up and reaching around her back to unhook her bra. He watched her, wide-eyed, as she pulled her arms out of the straps and flung the bra away. He watched, too, as she pulled her panties off the same way she had her shorts.
As it turned out, actually seeing how badly he wanted her, like, seeing legit physical evidence of it, well. It was something of a self-esteem boost.
He stared at her for several seconds. She stared back. Then he dove at her, and suddenly he was kissing her lips, her face, her neck, her breasts- it was quite a lot, really, and he seemed to be going pretty fast, too.
“Dipper,” Mabel gasped out as he attacked her nipple. There was really no other word for it. It was most certainly an attack. He was alternating between sucking it harshly and nibbling on it with his teeth, and it stung in the most delicious way.
He pulled off her breast with a pop, then trailed kisses down her chest and stomach, looking at her intently all the while.
“Wh- what’re you doing?” she questioned when he reached his presumed destination, spreading her legs to examine her body. Which, by the way, was tremendously embarrassing.
He looked back up at her. “Well, I was planning on, y’know…” he gestured to her vagina.
Mabel thought for a moment. “On one condition.”
“Another condition? Really?”
Nodding, she said, “you can eat me out, but only if I get to suck your dick after.”
He grinned up at her. “Deal.”
At that, he gave a torturously slow lick to her slit that ended just below where she really wanted it. She whimpered, which prompted him to do it again. And again. By the third incredibly slow lick, she was just about ready to scream at him before he thrust a finger into her and flicked his tongue over her clit in the same second, eliciting a gasp from her.
He thrust his finger in and out of her, slowly moving his tongue over her clit, and before long Mabel was whimpering again. “Ah- another,” she forced out. “Another finger, please.”
He complied, and when her fingers clenched the comforter, he moved a little faster inside of her, flicking his tongue in the same rhythm he was thrusting his fingers at, and she lifted her hips. He reached his other hand up to hold her down, to hold her still, and continued. “Close,” she gasped. “Don’t stop.”
Dipper hastened the flicks of his tongue, the thrusts of his fingers, and then he did something incredible. He closed his lips around her clit and started to suck gently. Mabel’s hand shot down to his hair, holding him between her legs, and her toes curled, bunching the comforter up in a tight grip beneath the pads of her feet, and she found herself instinctively fighting against the firm hand on her hip bone, trying to raise her pelvis closer to him.
“Ah- fuck, Dip, I’m gonna-“ he kept sucking her clit, only he started to flick his tongue over it at the same time, too, and Mabel shattered with a short, abrupt scream.
Her grip on his hair loosened and her hand fell to her side. Mabel’s entire body was tingling.
She’d forgotten how much stronger Dipper-assisted orgasms were than Dipper-free orgasms. She didn’t know if it was a soulmate thing, a Dipper thing, or an I’m-in-love-with-this-guy thing, and her brain was too mushy to care.
“Holy shit,” she panted, and he pulled away from her still-pulsing heat, pressing a kiss to the top of her thigh as he went. The extra tingles his lips caused traveled throughout the rest of her body.
“Sooooo… good, then?”
She glared at him. “Shut up, man, you know it was tops. Where’d you learn to do that, anyway?”
He reddened and looked away. “I maaaaay have done some online research.”
“What, like, porn?”
“Well, not for that specific purpose, no.”
“Then…?” she trailed off, looking at him expectantly.
“Okay, so I read some accounts from lesbians,” he confessed in a rush. “Mostly blogs and whatnot, and then I also talked to a few female friends I have-“
“Whoa there, pal,” she cut in. “What female friends? I dunno how I feel about you getting all the dirty deets from another girl.”
He blinked. “Oh, I talked to this lesbian friend I have, and also her girlfriend. Just… comparing notes, y’know?”
She looked at him incredulously for a few seconds, then burst out laughing. “Okay, okay, that’s fine. For a second there, I was worried you were exchanging extremely graphic details of our sex life with, like, Pacifica or something.”
Dipper blanched. “Yeah, no, not her.”
“Okay, cool.” After several more seconds, she looked him up and down.
Her bro was still sporting a big ol’ broner.
“I believe I was promised the opportunity to suck your dick in exchange for you getting the pleasure of eating me out.”
He blushed again. Holy bejeezus, he was adorable.
“You… you don’t have to, y’know,” he offered quietly.
“Well, yeah,” she agreed. “Of course I don’t have to, but it’s, like my new favorite hobby, brosephina.”
He grinned. “You’re pretty good at it, too.”
“Hmm,” she said, reaching down to grasp him. He gasped at the feel of her palm, and she motioned for him to lay down. “Maybe I’ll put that in college applications.” Once he was horizontal, Mabel leaned down and took the entire length of him in her mouth (or as much of him as she could fit, anyway) with absolutely zero warning.
Dipper groaned and leaned back against the pillow. “Fuuuuuuck.”
Humming around him, she bobbed her head, letting her lips slide over him and sucking in her cheeks. He reached down to grip one of her breasts, tweaking her nipple, and she moaned, the vibrations from the sound causing him to buck slightly into her mouth. She gagged a bit but kept going, pleased that he was enjoying himself so much.
Each time she only had the head of him in her mouth, she swirled her tongue around the top, dipping slightly into his urethra. “Holy shit, Mabes,” he groaned, fisting a hand in her hair. He didn’t push her head, though, for which she was grateful. Bobbing faster, obscene slurping sounds filled the loft, saliva dribbling down his shaft. His moans got louder, and she sped up as much as she could.
“Mabel,” he gasped. “Mabel, I’m gonna- you should move-“
She ignored him, grasping his testicles gently and taking him as deep as she could manage. She was pretty sure her nose brushed against his pubic hair on more than one occasion, actually.
He came down her throat with a shout that sounded almost pained, and she nearly choked on it all, but managed to swallow the vast majority of it. It was not pleasant-tasting, nor was the texture particularly appetizing, but when she looked up at him, he was gazing down at her like she was some kind of goddess, so it was worth it, she decided.
She pulled her mouth off of him, and when she did, a small amount of his semen dripped out of the side of her mouth. She wiped it away with the back of her hand.
“So, how was it?”
He looked at her incredulously. “You literally just swallowed my jizz and you’re asking me how it was?”
Mabel shrugged, grabbing his half-drunk water bottle that was off to the side of the bed. She sat up, taking a swig from it to wash that nasty-ass taste out of her mouth.
Eugh.
“It was awesome, Mabes,” he told her as she set the water bottle back down. She smiled happily at him, then lay down next to him and rested her head on his chest. “Downside, though, is I’ll need a bit before I can go again.”
“Eh, that’s fine.”
Turns out he only needed approximately ten minutes before he could go again.
She’d still been laying on his chest contentedly when he started running his fingertips over the side of one of her breasts, and when she looked up at him questioning it, he kissed her.
Dipper turned his body towards her, slipping his tongue into her mouth, and she felt his hardness press against her.
She pulled away with a laugh. “Already?”
“I’m seventeen, Mabel,” he pointed out.
She shrugged and went back to kissing him.
No objections from this girl, thank you.
He climbed on top of her before too much longer, his arousal pressing into her stomach, and she wrapped her arms around his neck, one of her hands at the back of his neck, her fingers threading through his hair.
He reached between them with one hand to grip one of her breasts again, squeezing it lightly. He kissed her neck, sucking a bruise into the skin, and she moaned softly. “Dip,” she murmured. “I need you.”
He reached between her legs to stroke her, finding her wet again. “I need you, too,” he groaned against her neck.
“Then take me,” she begged, lifting her hips to meet his fingers.
Positioning himself between her legs, he thrust into her with a groan, his head falling against her, his forehead resting between her breasts. “You okay?” he panted.
Nodding, Mabel wrapped her legs around the backs of his thighs. “Keep going.”
Pushing himself up onto his hands, Dipper pulled out of her almost completely, and she whimpered at the loss, gasping when he thrust back into her. He kept up his slow, gentle pace, like he was worried he’d break her, and eyes were clenched shut with the effort to restrain himself.
She reached up to stroke his cheek. “Let go, Dipper,” she said softly. “Don’t hold back. You won’t hurt me, I promise.”
When he pulled out and thrust back into her again, harder this time, like she’d wanted, she moaned and grasped his arms, her fingertips digging into his skin.
“Fuck, Mabel,” he groaned, his hips snapping against hers. “I missed this so much.”
“Me too,” she agreed, lifting her hips to meet each of his thrusts. “Please don’t stop.”
He leaned down to press his lips to hers desperately, hungrily, and she returned the kiss with just as much ferocity, her legs tightening around him.
“Harder,” she begged. She knew she was begging. She didn’t care. “Give it to me harder!”
Dipper complied, pulling back slightly to watch her breasts bounce in time with his thrusts. Mabel lifted one of her legs up to rest her ankle on his shoulder, and they both groaned at the new angle, the new depth.
“You feel so good,” he moaned, slamming into her again. “Fuck, I don’t- I don’t know how much longer I can-“
“I don’t care, I don’t care,” she gasped out. “Just fuck me, Dipper, please!”
Dipper rose up to his knees, lifting her hips to meet his and holding the leg she’d placed on his shoulder still as he pounded into her.
Clenching the fabric of the comforter in her hands so tightly her knuckles hurt, Mabel couldn’t seem to stop herself from screaming, begging him for more, not to stop.
Putting a hand on her hip to hold her pelvis against his, he gripped her hard enough to bruise, and all she could think was that she hoped it did bruise, she wanted to feel the remnants of this for weeks-
She looked up at him, his pained expression, the way he was staring between them, watching himself slide in and out of her harshly.
“Get me pregnant, Dipper,” she moaned. “I want it so badly, please, I need it-“ she cut herself off with a cry when he thrust into her again.
“I can’t,” he forced out. “You know I can’t.”
“Please,” she said again. “I need it, I need it so bad, fuck-“
He thrust again, moving his hand from her hip to her breast, pinching her nipple between his thumb and forefinger.
“Soon, Mabes, I promise,” he groaned, leaning against the leg she had on his shoulder.
“Now, dammit,” Mabel demanded. “I want you to fuck a baby into me now!”
“I want it, too,” he confessed, squeezing her breast roughly as he thrust into her. “But we can’t yet. I’ll give you one soon, I swear, just-“ he cut himself off. “Fuck, Mabel, I’m gonna- fuck-“
“Cum for me, cum inside me, Dip,” she begged, desperate for it, for him.
“I can’t,” he groaned miserably, then reached between them and rubbed her clit in quick, harsh circles.
“Ah!” Mabel cried out, her toes curling and her body freezing up as her orgasm ripped through her abruptly.
He didn’t stop pounding into her, not even for a second, only lifted his hand away from her clit to hold her hip again, his head falling back. “Mabes, I- I love you, fuck, I love you-“
She knew he was seconds away from orgasming; his thrusts were short and stunted, harsh and bruising. “Cum for me, Dipper,” she encouraged. “Fill me up.”
He groaned her name again, then, to her tremendous disappointment, yanked himself out of her abruptly, his release spurting onto her vulva. Her hips fell back onto the mattress, and he collapsed on top of her.
After several minutes, he lifted his head up to look at her. “Do you really want me to get you pregnant? Like, now?”
She thought for a moment before answering. “Yeah, I do.” He seemed startled by that. “But I also know it’s not really… feasible right now. I really, really want it, but I know it’s not a good idea.”
He nodded and leaned in to kiss her slowly, lovingly, nuzzling her nose with his when their lips disconnected. “I love you, Mabel.”
“I love you more,” she countered with a grin.
“I love you the most,” Dipper insisted.
“Oh yeah?” she challenged. “Think you got me there, don’t cha? Well guess what, buddy: I love you infinity times the most, so there.”
He blinked at her. “Uhhhh… that’s not how math works. There’s nothing more than the most.”
“I don’t give a rat tooth if it’s ‘not how math works’,” she said in her very best Dipper impression. “I dunno if you’ve met me before, but I’m Mabel Pines, and I’m redefining math.”
He snorted. “If you say so.”
“Damn right I say so!” After a moment, she noticed the stickiness between them. “Errr… can you get something for that? I’m feelin’ a bit jizztastic here, bro.”
“Right,” he agreed with a slight blush. “Lemme, uh… lemme get something for that.”
“Coolio, I’ll chill here.”
He nodded and went down the stairs.
Well, Mabel thought. This is gonna be one awesome weekend.

hi! here’s another fun n cheerful ghost jay drabble, definitely not really depressing at all! :D
Mistakes
Pixal was expecting many things to be going on when she got back to the temple, almost a month late after her mission went awry. It was supposed to be only two weeks she was gone, but, well, duty calls.
Out of all the things she has been expecting (mourning, an empty temple, arguing, etc.), seeing Jay on the couch talking to Cole was not one of them.
“Um.”
Both boys look up, confused looks turning into delighted smiles almost instantly as they jump up. “Pixal!” Cole runs over to her, and she laughs as his arms wrap tightly around her in a hug. “How’ve you been? Zane and Lloyd are doing a patrol,” he explains, “something about a rogue batch of serpentine. They should be back in about an hour or two, unless something goes wrong.”
“Great,” Pixal smiles, squeezing him back one more time before stepping away. Her eyes land on Jay, and her smile fades. “How- my apologies, but... why and how is he here?”
“Well, uh...” Cole trails off, clearly a bit uncomfortable. “He’s kind of...”
Jay’s smile, however, doesn’t falter, instead clearing his throat and pulling a paper out of his pocket (is he... see-through?). Reading from the paper, he says, “So, funny story, I died. And now I’m a ghost. With no memory of dying, or... anything that caused me to die. So, don’t-” he frowns, slightly- “don’t tell me anything that may trigger memories, and try not to act weird around me. And, um, that’s about it.” He folds the paper, slipping it back into his pocket. “Kai wrote that for me,” Jay explains. “Pretty informative.”
Pixal blinks. “Right. Well. So you don’t remember... anything?” She’s been told about the island, but... apparently her friends have neglected to tell her that Jay is alive (well... half-alive. A ghost. Whatever) and well (as well as one can be with zero memories of their death.)
Jay shakes his head. “Nope. And, apparently, no one’s allowed to tell me about it.” He sounds a bit disappointed at the last bit, but regains a smile that seems rather forced. “Anyway, good to see you again! I’ll go tell Kai you’re back.”
Pixal waits until her friend (friend? Formerly-dead-but-now-alive friend? Formerly-enemy-friend? Hmm.) jogs off before turning back to Cole. “So. When did he turn up?”
The master of earth rubs the back of his neck awkwardly. “Few days after you went on your mission. From what I heard, he just kinda... popped out of the wall. Scared the crap out of Kai.”
Pixal smiles, slightly. “So, I’m assuming I will be informed about what happened when the others return?”
Cole nods just as Jay re-enters the room, followed closely by Kai. The fire ninja offers a smile and a wave to Pixal. “Hey, Pix. How was the mission?”
“Long,” she sighs, and Kai smirked.
“So, uh... wanna come get some tea? Lloyd made some, earlier.” Pixal raises an eyebrow, and Kai hurriedly adds, “Zane helped him. It doesn’t taste horrible, for once.”
“Yes. That would be nice.”
***
So maybe Jay shouldn’t be doing this.
But hey. He did figure out how to turn invisible all on his own (well, mostly on his own (having your best friend become a ghost for over a year and a half does have its advantages)), so he should use it. It’s his decision, not any of his friends’.
Not that he’s told his friends about his ability to turn invisible, anyway, but still.
From what Jay understands, the other ninja are going to have Important Discussion Time with Pixal in around five minutes. Explain to her what happened on the island and what not.
So, the logical thing to do is sneak in while being invisible, listen to whatever happened on the island that nobody wants to tell him about, try to figure out why they didn’t want to tell him. Can’t be that bad, right?
Right. Everything’ll be fine, and Jay will be fine, and he’ll tell the others that he knows, and everything will be great.
Pixal interrupts his train of thought, standing up with the others. “So, we’re gonna go...” She gestures vaguely to the living room, and Cole and Kai wince in unision behind her. They probably don’t think that Jay has noticed the fact that they shoo him away for a few hours every time that they have to explain his existence (half-existence?) to someone. Which, surprisingly, happens a lot.
Jay pushes himself away from the wall he was leaning against (being able to touch solid things is a lot easier than being able to touch people, or have people touch him.) with a smile. “Yeah, sure. I’m gonna go rest for a bit, see you guys later.”
He’s not going to go rest for a bit. What he is going to do, actually, is pull the tracker off his uniform (it’s not as hidden as Zane thinks) and put it on his bed, then sneak back into the living room, invisible.
(One of the first things he worked on as a ghost was turning invisible. Going invis is easier than getting out of invis, actually. It’s sort of like a switch you flick down to disappear.
Getting out is harder, due to the fact that it takes physical contact with someone to switch out. The last few times he’s done it, Jay just bumped shoulders with Zane while he had his nose buried in a book.
Jay hopes this meeting won’t take too long. The longer he’s invisible, the more he can feel himself fading away.)
The other ninja (and Pixal) dissapear into the Important Discussion Talk room, and Jay wanders off to his room. Quickly, he pulls the mini tracker that Zane made off his elbow (not the best hiding spot, seriously) and places it carefully on his bed.
Time to overhear some things, like any good person questioning their existence and/or past would do.
Once he’s back into the kitchen, Jay flips the internal switch.
And vanishes.
It’s... it’s pretty much exactly the same as being a regular ghost, except for the fact that he can’t see himself.
Jay pushes the door open (and silently thanks the FSM that it doesn’t creak), and gets noticed almost immediately. Crap.
Cole frowns, pushing himself up from the couch. “...Jay?”
Zane pulls something out of his pocket before turning it around so that Jay and Cole can see the screen. “No. He’s still in his room. We should really get that door fixed- does that all the time.”
...Oh thank god.
Zane sets the tracker pad back down onto the table, Jay slinks farther into the room, and Cole closes the door before plopping back down onto the couch. “We ready to start?”
Pixal nods, slowly, looking a little less unsure than earlier. “Affirmative.”
“Alright, so...” Kai leans back in his chair, in a ready-to-start-talking-about-our-friend’s-demise-and-resurrection pose. “Let’s begin.”
And they do.
They talk about getting to the island, about being... not exactly welcomed by the locals (understandable), and about-
“His mother?”
“We think so,” Cole says awkwardly. “Well, not think so, Master Wu did explicitly say that she was Jay’s mom. Said her name was Linda, or something.”
“Liberty,” Nya interupts “But when they were kids, everyone apparently called her Libber. She used to be really nice and kind too- a lot like Jay, really, but...” She looks at the ground.
Jay can’t breathe. His mother was there, his mom, and they didn’t tell him about her? Why?
He finds it very hard to stay quiet right now, and instead shoves his fist in his mouth and bites on it, hard. ...Doesn’t really do anything, but the numb feeling he always has grows worse. He’ll start sort of... tingling, soon. Always happens when he gets stressed, now.
“But she had lost it.”
Hold on, she- what?
Nya takes a shaky breath, and her brother squeezes her hand comfortingly. “Libber was... clearly not herself. Insane, really. Just kind of... bent on destruction. Something had happened, we don’t know what, but she wasn’t- wasn’t herself, anymore, according to Master Wu. Jay was kinda... messed up about that.”
“Of course he was,” Cole murmurs. “I mean, you meet your mom after not even knowing she existed for most of your life, and she doesn’t even care about you? Gotta screw you up a little. Along with... all the other stuff.”
Jay’s starting to think he really doesn’t want to know about all the other stuff.
But the other ninja keeps talking, and he keeps listening, and Jay really understands why they didn’t want to tell him about any of this.
“So,” Pixal says eventually, after Kai’s taken a break from speaking. “Just to be perfectly clear- Jay went evil slash insane because his mother didn’t care about him, and he thought that none of you cared about him as well?”
Yes, Jay wants to scream. Yes, that’s exactly what happened.
There are thoughts in his head, memories blinking in and out and Jay doesn’t really know what to do with all of them.
“Well,” Kai starts slowly, “it wasn’t all that, but-”
“Shut it, Kai,” Cole interrupts, and his companions stare at him in surprise. “Look, just- yes, Pixal. It was our fault. We made him feel like we didn’t care about him. Kai especially,” he added, and the fire ninja glared at him for a few seconds until he gave up, looking down at the ground. Cole continued. “And now we have another chance, and just- we can’t mess up this time.”
“And then what happened?” Pixal asks.
“The tribe got to him,” Cole says, “offered him a way out.”
And they all keep tallking.
And Jay listens.
Listens to how he turned against his friends, how he was going to destroy Ninjago to bring them pain and suffering, and how the others had no choice to but to take him down. And they did that by-
After a few seconds of silence, Pixal speaks up. “So... how’d you stop him?”
No one says anything, and Jay’s stomach drops as Kai looks at the ground.
Pixal’s eyes widen. “You didn’t- you guys- you...” She trails off, shocked.
Kai whispers, eventually, “We didn’t mean to kill him. But he... we were just trying to hit him with all our powers at once, see if we could snap him out of it, maybe stop him, but-” he looks at his hand as if it’s covered in blood. “...We’re more powerful than we thought.”
Jay’s frozen, and the one remaining part of his head that can think clearly hopes that this meeting’ll end soon, otherwise he’ll start to fade away. Once that happens...
His friends-
They killed him.
Jay had assumed it was something that happened with the tribe, or-or maybe even his mother and where was she?, but not his friends.
He feels sick.
...Maybe he deserved it, honestly, with the way he was acting, but still.
“OK,” Pixal says after a moment, “so he’s dead because you guys killed him.” Cole and Lloyd wince at the true accusation, but nod in agreement. “So how’d become a ghost, then? There’s... I can’t think of any logical way.”
“We think,” Cole starts, “that the tribe has some kind of resurrection ritual. But either something went wrong or there’s a cost, because Jay doesn’t know how or why he died. Also the whole ghost thing.”
“I see. And- was Libber there, too? Did... did she have to watch? Did you guys kill her, too?”
“No! She... she disappeared, just before Jay lost it. We’re not sure where she is- probably alive somewhere else. The tribe didn’t know where she went. She might’ve told Jay, but... if she did, he won’t remember.”
...OK. So his mom is still out there, somewhere, probably insane. That’s... good to know, sort of.
“And, um...” Cole drums his fingers on the armrest of the couch he’s sitting on. Jay’s legs really hurt. “I think that’s about it.”
“OK,” Pixal says slowly. “And I’m not allowed to tell Jay about this?”
The others shake their heads immediately. “Nope,” confirms Kai. “Too dangerous. Might go all insane-ey and lose it again.”
Jay...
Ouch.
...His friends don’t trust him, that’s for sure, and to be honest he deserves it.
But he deserves an apology, as well, not some half-baked lie about how when he died they realized they weren’t as nice to him as they could’ve been.
...Maybe he can think of a way to tell him that he remembers, without them trying to kill him for it.
As Jay’s thinking/beginning to have an internal mental breakdown, Cole stands up and starts walking towards the door. “I’m gonna go check on Jay, see how he’s doing. He’s asleep, right?” Zane holds up the tracker pad, which shows a little dot marked Jay on his bed. “Great. I’ll see how he’s doing, and-”
Oops.
Jay had tried to go through the door just as Cole opened it, but apparently the other ninja has no respect for the personal space of friends he can’t see and didn’t know where there.
Jay takes a few careful steps back, internally keeping the invisible switch down due to the fact that Cole bumped into him.
Cole hesitates, then reaches out a hand, and Jay is suddenly filled with so much dang panic that he can’t move, and Cole shoves him back so that Jay stumbles, landing hard against the wall and almost knocking over the coffee table. “Watch it!”
Cole’s eyes go wide and mouth drops open, the other ninja (and Pixal) twisting around in their seats to see what’s wrong.
..Jay’s not invisible anymore, is he.
One glance down at his body confirms that. He’s back to being a dark green/blue combo, the floor an odd colour beneath his feet.
“You were...” Cole’s voice is quiet, but it quickly grows to a normal tone, albeit stunned. “You were listening? You were here the whole time?!”
“I-” Jay glances around the room, eyes landing on Kai. “I didn’t-”
His friends killed him.
His friends killed him.
Kai swallows, before asking, “How do- Jay, are you... how do you feel?”
Jay looks at him.
And turns and sprints through the wall.
It’s getting dark, outside, gray clouds indicating rain soon. Too bad. Jay can’t stay here.
His friends killed him his friends killed him-
Jay hears a yell of “After him!” from behind him as the others claw their way through the temple.
He doesn’t have much time.
His friends killed him his friends killed him his friends-
Jay summons his dragon, pushing through the fear that seems to be overwhelming his body, more and more every second-
Hisfriendskilledhimhisfriendskilledhimhisfriendskilledhim-
He flies off just as the remaining ninja burst through the door. He can hear them calling their dragons, as well, with the sound of wings behind him within a few seconds.
He flies faster.
“Hmmm, what you’re looking for is an Aeroblade, forged by Deepstone, an aquatic material mined from the bottom of the ocean. Very unique. Even more expensive.”
Aeroblades.
Ronin.
He needs to find Ronin.
Jay looks back at the five dragons following him, their riders too far away to see clearly (he got a head start).
He looks ahead of him, to Ninjago City the place that he apparently tried to destroy a few months ago.
..He’ll lose them there.

Small Fandom! Rec list
I have the bad habit of removing stories from my AO3 Bookmarks list when I think I won’t want to re-read them again, and then when I of course do, I struggle to find them. I’ve been trying to find some I’ve read ages ago in small fandoms and thought others might go “oh I never even realised there’s a Man in Black fandom out there, I’ll check this one out.” My definition of a small fandom here is less than 500 fics on AO3, but most of these have a lot less (under 100) actually.
Probably more will come to mind, and I’ll add them to this list then. If you have any small fandom stories you’d like to rec, please do!
 Enjoy.
Warning: all of these fics are Explicit or Mature in rating.
1. Ozzie Puts the Ass in Astronomy by Seanbiggerstaffrox - People of Earth
I consider People of Earth a very under rated and under the radar series. I personally was very sad when it got cancelled after Season 2. Characters are diverse without you feeling they are like that because the creators thought that to be a trending thing. It’s a satire, yet all these people of earth and the aliens too are very relatable. This fic gives me all the feels I needed to feel for the relationship of Ozzie and his lizardman boss. Warning for interspecies/alien sex.
2. What Falls Away by sinemoras09 - Seirei no Moribito | Guardian of the Sacred Spirit
Guardian of the Sacred Spirit is one of my favorite anime and Balsa is likely my favourite anime heroine and I don’t understand why it’s not super popular. Balsa is strong and just right, but she also has a soft side. She is the female character we are missing not just from anime but from stories in general. This one explores her and Tanda’s relationship. Warning for het (the only non-slash fic on this list)
3. im·por·tune by spock - Hail Caesar!
I can’t say Hail Caesar! was a particularly favourite movie of mine, but I enjoyed it well enough, and as it happens with these things I checked out if it has any fanfics written to it. I wasn’t prepared to find this gem. I probably would have forgotten about the whole movie by now, if not for this story. Hobie and Laurence Laurentz are such an unlikely pair, and they fit so perfectly together.
4.  once you get the feeling it wants you back for more by spock (again) - Men in Black
I did say Men in Black fandom, didn’t I? I just made the mistake of googling when the first movie was out, and yes, that was ‘97. Still, if you have any memory of Agent Jay and Kay, just read this one. It’s beautiful. Warning for Kay being a total jerk.
5. Devotion and Delivery by Nia_dAstarte - Green Book
Once again, might not be me favourite movie ever, but I what the plot lacked, the characters and acting made up for. This fic just takes that not too far fetched step of what if, and gets the boys together.
6. Nice Work If You Can Get It by astolat - Asimov Robot series
Look, I grew up on reading and re-reading Asimov books, and I always just loved Donovan and Powell in I, Robot. It’s a revelation when as an adult you realise others liked them as well, and liked them enough to get them together in a fic. This is funny and it fits the light-hearted and robot-centric originals. Just they have sex, which for whatever reason was missing from Asimov’s writing.
7. C/Fe by Dorinda - another one for Asimov Robot series
Did Daneel  and Elijah ever gave you the Feels? I definitely loved them to bits. Many-many years later, re-reading The Robots of Dawn I realised just how gay they are together. If a robot can even be gay. Warning: for sex with a humanoid robot, but Daneel is more human than most humans in Asimov’s books, so that’s okay.

Is this what you want? insp
--
Zane stared at Kai’s unconscious body. He hadn’t meant to. It was a tense situation; he was just scared and…well.
“You did the right thing.”
Zane scowled at the unwanted voice in his head. He hit his head the day before and there he was. Zane had been doing his best to ignore him. He’d taken to calling him Overkill, because that was what his suggestions were.
Kai was still on the ground.
This had all started because Kai had gotten hurt and his ankle was still recovering. Today he wanted to train again, but Nya had told him he couldn’t. They fought and Kai ran off.
Zane should’ve just let him go, but Overkill had insisted he check on him. Sure enough, he’d found Kai trying to make a brace for his ankle out of some bandages so he could go out and fight. Zane had tried to talk him out of it, but Kai had gotten so mad and defensive. Overkill’s screaming was not helping Zane think straight, so he had lost it and struck Kai on the back of the head as he tried to walk away.
“You did what he had to do to protect him.” Overkill assured him.
“No, I attacked him.”
“You protected him.”
Zane sighed. Nya had stormed off on her own after the fight, and his other brothers were all visiting their respective families. He was all on his own.
“I hit him!”
“What’s one little bump compared to the slashes and bruises he would’ve come home with? The bullet wound he would hide and try to treat himself? The infection he would get from not addressing it correctly? The fever he would suffer from while his body fought off the infection? The worry Nya and Lloyd would feel seeing their older brother sick and bedridden? The guilt he’d feel for making them worry? The shame he’d feel every time he looked at the jagged scar?”
Zane tighten his clenched fists.
“You don’t know that would happen.”
“You know his ankle isn’t recovered enough for him to fight. You know he would get in over his head! You know he would get himself hurt!”
“What’s the point then!? He’ll just be more determined to go out when he wakes up.” Zane spat.
“Then stop him.”
“What would you have me do? Lock him up!? How would that be helping him!?” Zane yelled, exasperated.
“Of course not! That would only add to his suffering.”
Zane huffed.
“Then what?” he snapped.
Silence.
“That’s what I thought! I’m going to start to work on an apology for when he wakes up.” Zane said, still annoyed.
“You have to protect him.”
Zane sighed.
“That’s your job. You have to protect people, right?”
“Yes.” Zane muttered, still annoyed and losing his stamina for the argument.
“Well he needs protected from himself. That’s what we’re doing.”
Zane just stayed quiet, putting Kai on the cot so he wouldn’t wake up on the floor.
“He’s only trying to put himself in danger because he’s upset. We can’t just stop at physically protecting him, we have to treat the deeper issue! His emotional pain leads to him being in danger.”
“Meaning?” Zane asked, his tone still short.
“Meaning we have to protect him from himself not just physically, we have to protect him mentally too.”
Zane let out a bitter laugh
“We’ve all been trying to help Kai through his issues for years now. I can’t just go into his brain and fix things!”
“But you can!”
“How in the world could I do that?” Zane asked.
“The overlord did it.”
Zane stopped suddenly in shock.
“He did it to Borg, and even Wu.”
Zane shock.
“Are you asking me to mind control my friend?”
“I’m not asking you to do anything! I’m pointing out a problem and telling you the solution.”
“What the Overlord did was evil.”
“What he did was use a weapon. He hurt people with it yes, but you use weapons to protect all the time, don’t you? Villains have always used weapons. That doesn’t make the weapon evil. All you would be doing is using a weapon to protect someone.”
That….was decent logic, Zane had to admit that.
“You have total access to Borg’s systems, including the canceled projects the Overlord developed. You could look into it.”
“But I’d never-“
“Nya won’t be back for hours. The others are all away visiting family. You have all the time you need.”
“But I couldn’t-“
“Kai is suffering. You can protect him from that suffering. What kind of protector would you be if you let him continue like this? If he was happy, if he was pain-free, he wouldn’t feel the need to hurt himself and others to mange it. We can give that to him. We can fix it, fix him.”
With Overkill whispering in his ear, Zane stared working. It wasn’t long until the chip was done. Implanting it wasn’t hard either.
Zane drowned in guilt the moment he activated it, but Kai was waking up and needed his attention.
Kai’s eyes fluttered open and he moaned as he sat up, rubbing his neck where Zane he implanted the chip.
“What happened?”
Zane was speechless. Kai didn’t seem too much like the zombie he feared he’d turn his friend into.
“Zane?” Kai asked, wide open eyes staring back.
“You…you were trying to go out and fight and I stopped you.” Zane explained.
Would Kai remember that Zane had attacked him? Zane cringed and braced himself for Kai’s anger.
“Oh.” Was all he said.
Zane blinked and stared at Kai.
“That was probably for the best. My ankle isn’t fully healed, I would’ve gotten hurt.” Kai said, smiling. “Thanks.”
“You’re not mad?” Zane asked in disbelief.
Kai shook his head and gave another big smile.
“Nah. You were right. I was just being stupid. How about we stay in and watch a movie or something?”
“You see how happy he is now that we’ve protected him from his own bad thoughts?” Overkill said.
“How’s your ankle?” Zane asked, ignoring certain things for the moment.
Kai shrugged.
“It’s throbbing a little, but it’s manageable.”
“I should give you an anti-inflammatory.”
“Alright.” Kai agreed.
“He’s even stopped refusing medical treatment. He’s so much better now that we fixed him. He needed this!”
Zane couldn’t argue with results. Kai was so much happier. He took the pill Zane gave him and even let him elevate his foot while they watched the movie.
“This is the best way to protect him.” Overkill told him, and Zane was starting to agree with him.
Halfway through their second movie, Nya got home.
“Alright, how much damage did you do?” she asked reluctantly as she come into the room, not surprised to see Kai’s ankle elevated, but a little surprised to see it not back in a splint.
“Actually, I didn’t go out.” Kai said.
Nya glared.
“Honest! Ask Zane! I’ve been here all night!”
Nay looked to Zane who nodded. She knew he wouldn’t lie to her face like that, so that meant Kai was telling the truth.
“Alright, who are you and what have you done with my brother?” Nya asked.
Zane stiffed, thinking he was caught for a moment.
“You caught me. I’m Kai’s responsible clone. You’ve thwarted my plans to take over his life and improve it while he was locked in the closet. Curse you.” Kai said playfully, while rolling his eyes.
Nya laughed. Zane relaxed. They all settled in to continue their movie marathon, now with Nya.
Kai feel asleep somewhere towards the ending of movie number four. Nya took the chance to ask Zane more about Kai’s sudden self-preservation.
“I just…. I dealt with the real problem instead of the symptoms of it.” Zane explained.
“Do I even want to know how you managed that?” Nya asked, half joking.
Zane laughed it off but didn’t answer.
He didn’t want to lie, but he also was pretty sure Nya would have a problem if she knew what he did to her brother.
But it was fine. It was to protect him.
“Well thanks. Whatever you did got through that thick skull of his. I’m glad he’s ok. Maybe he might not get himself half killed for a while!”
Zane was even more firm in his decision. He did the right thing. He helped Kai.
So, when Overkill spoke up again a few days later, Zane listened.
“Lloyd is in pain too.”
“He is?”
“Look at how much he’s suffered. The nightmares, the grief, the scars, he deserves better.”
“He does.” Zane agreed.
“We could protect him from those nightmares. We could protect him from all his guilt and sadness.”
Overkill was right. Zane was made to protect, and this was the best and most effective way to do it. Zane didn’t dither before getting to work like had with Kai, he got straight to it.
“Why should we stop there? All our friends should be protected. They have flawed human brains that hurt for no reason and make the wrong choices for themselves. We can fix that. We can give them better. Protect them from their own minds!”
Zane couldn’t agree more.
Jay was the next one he could get alone, with Kai and Lloyd’s help of course. They were more than happy to help, and things went so much smoother with assistance too. Now he just had to wait for Jay to bring Nya to him.
-
Jay had never in his life been so thankful. Thankful he was the master of the element he was. Thankful for static shock. Thankful for doorknobs.
“You alright?” Nya asked.
Oh no.
“No. No I’m not. We have to go.”
“But you said-“
Jay grabbed her wrist and started to drag her away.
“Jay! What are you doing!?”
“Just trust me, we can’t go in there. We have to find Cole.”
Nya huffed, but let Jay lead her below deck to where Cole was lifting weights. Said ninja gave them a surprised look when Jay came bursting in with Nya in tow and slammed the door close behind them.
“What’s up?” Cole asked, while Jay frantically tried to barricade the door.
“What’s up, is Zane’s gone crazy!” Jay yelled.
Nya gave him a flat look while Cole just blinked in disbelief.
“I’m serious. He….” Jay choked on the words “He……he put something in my….” Deep breaths “in my head. I’m pretty sure he did it to Lloyd and Kai too. I was…”
As crazy as he was sounding, Jay’s distress was real. Cole put a comforting hand on his back while Jay force himself to keep talking.
“I was….I was getting Nya so he could….do it to her.” He screwed his eyes shut, trying to power through “But I think the static on the doorknob reacted with my element. I must’ve shorted out whatever he was using to….control me.”
“Jay….are you sure-“
“YES, I’M SURE!!!” Jay snapped.
“But why would Zane do that?” Nya asked
“I don’t know, but he….he was definitely in my head….” Jay was ready to cry from the stress and trauma.
Zane was his friend, and normally Jay would trust him with his life. But this…it was violating, and Jay didn’t know how he could forgive Zane for it.
A knock at the door.
“Jay, Are you in here? You ran off in such a panic, I wanted to make sure you were alright.” Zane said through the door.
Jay trembled but answered.
“Yeah….I’m fine. Just going to chill in here for a while.”
The door rattled.
“Why is the door locked, Friend?”
“It’s just….for privacy.” Jay excused, sending frightened glances over at Nya and Cole.
“Would you please open it?” Zane asked in a level tone.
“N-no. Not right now.”
Quiet.
“It’s not safe to keep the door locked like this.” Zane said, disapproval in his voice.
“It’s fine.”
“No. It’s not Jay. Let me in so I can protect you.”
Nya and Cole finally looked a little concerned.
“I’m ok Za-“
Zane started to try to break the door down.
“Zane stop.” Nya pleaded.
“It’s ok Nya, I’m just trying to keep you all safe.”
“How are you planning on doing that Zane?” Cole asked hesitantly.
“Oh.” Zane said quietly, the pounding stopping for a moment.
“You’re all three in there.” Zane stated in a dismayed voice. “I would’ve much preferred to do this more gently, but if I have to use force I will.”
“Zane….what did you do? What did you do to my brother? Did you…. are you controlling him?” Nya had tears in her eyes.
“I’m protecting him from his own thoughts. He’s happier and less likely to put himself in danger now.” Zane explained cheerfully in an unhinged tone
Nya took a step away from the door and joined in Jay’s frightened shaking.
“Zane buddy. Let’s talk this out, ok? You don’t have to do this.” Cole shakily tried to reason.
“I do have to do this. It’s the only way to truly protect you. Don’t worry, once I fix you guys you won’t be so scared.”
Zane went back to breaking down the door. Kai and Lloyd joined him and started pleaded with the others to let them all in so they could help them.

Attacked in their Sleep
Tumblr media
@badthingshappenbingo
hey look a bingo! :D
Prompt: attacked in their sleep
Fandom: Ninjago
Character: Kai
Trigger Warnings: blood
Cold gaps dig holes in his memory and he does not know why.
Cole has never been a particularly forgetful person, but recently, he just… can’t remember. Little things, like why he entered a room or when he fell asleep or when he got out of bed. But they’re gaining frequency, and he’s beginning to get worried.
And the headaches. They’re not the worst he’s ever had, nowhere near a migraine, but like his forgetfulness, it’s more how often it’s been happening recently that’s bothering him.
Other times, when he’s alone, he gets this feeling that someone is there with him. That someone is… watching him, even, but every time he looks, there’s no one there.
He tries to tell himself it’s paranoia.
He doesn’t tell the others, though. It’s probably just a result of dehydration and a lack of sleep, and he’s always hated to cause a fuss. He just needs to take better care of himself, that’s all.
He wakes up in the middle of sleepwalking on far too many nights. He’s never been a restless sleeper (has he?), but this is almost enough to cause concern.
He’s sure it’s nothing, though. Sleepwalking is plenty-common (hell, even Kai is an occasional sleepwalker!), and it’s not like he’s going to find his way outside and get hit by a car. He hopes.
But until it’s actually something worth mentioning, he’s not going to whine about it. Everything is fine.
- - -
Kai is sure that he isn’t the only one who’s noticed that Cole is acting off. Nothing huge, nothing to the point that they should be intervening, but enough to cause some concern.
Cole is… absent. His attention is always just under where it should be, he’s forgetting simple things, like what day it is or who’s turn it is to cook or even what his favorite video game is called. And Kai knows bad dreams when he hears them. He did practically raise Nya, after all.
Cole hasn’t been sleeping well at all. He’s always tossing and turning, sometimes even making noise (usually minor sleep talking. Stuff that doesn’t make sense, like “I won’t” or “don’t make me”). Kai assumes that it’s based on something that happened in his past.
Besides Cole, everything has been pretty normal. Well… as normal as things can be when you’re a group of ninja fighting off evil snakes and a power hungry lord of darkness. Zane has been adjusting well to finding out that he’s a nindroid (Jay has been using that term so much that it’s kind of just stuck), the kid is staying with them and is finally figuring out that endless pranks will result in some very pissed off ninja, and Nya is — well, a samurai, but Kai can’t tell anyone and it’s going to drive him nuts pretty soon. But still, he’s proud of her, and she’s more than proven she can take care of herself.
Kai is laying in bed, and he can’t tell what woke him up. A glance at the clock reveals it to be just past three in the morning. The room is pitch black, and everyone else is asleep.
He yawns, adjusts a little, and is just barely asleep when he hears a noise. The quietest creaking of a floorboard, nothing too weird. But something twists in his gut and he’s just about to sit up to investigate when something stabs into his chest.
Kai’s eyes shoot open, and he grabs the arm of whoever is attacking him, and he tries his best to keep the blade from going any deeper. He tries to scream, but finds that he can’t make a sound.
Whoever is attacking him is strong, and they’re putting up more of a fight than Kai expected. He’s struggling, and they’re gaining ground, inch by inch. If he doesn’t do something, it’s going to hit something vital to his survival.
He kicks his legs out, taking the chance to roll out of bed and run. The blade rips out of his skin, tearing the wound open even further, but the trailing blood is the last thing on his mind.
He barely makes it outside to the training course before he’s all but tackled, and they both fall to the ground. They’re rolling around, kicking and hitting and all things in between before his assailant, their dagger glinting in the moonlight, poses to strike. Only now does Kai get a look at who it is.
Cole.
With vacant red eyes and a blade raised high and aiming to kill.
Kai barely has time to shake himself out of his stupor before he manages to get up, grabbing a katana from the weapons cabinet.
“Cole,” he says, finding his voice, even if there’s not much of it. “Dude, think about what you’re doing!”
Cole just lunges at him, and Kai is finding it horribly difficult to fight him without hurting him. Red eyes, why does he have red eyes—
“It’s the Hypnobrai, Cole! Come on, snap out of it! You know you don’t want to do this, I’m the cool one!”
Metal grinds against metal as their blades meet, then come apart again. Kai and Cole are usually pretty evenly matched in training. But with a ruthless monster controlling him…
Suddenly, all of Cole’s recent mannerisms are beginning to make sense.
Kai is backed against a wall, and Cole raises his knife… then freezes. His hand begins to tremble. Then his arm, then his whole body.
“Please don’t make me,” Cole whispers, and Kai takes this as his chance to dodge and put more space between the two of them. He needs to figure this out, and quick.
“Come on, snap out of it before one of us gets hurt,” Kai practically begs, crying out as Cole’s blade slashes his arm. In retaliation, he swipes his sword. He doesn’t realize just how much harm he’s done until he feels the tip slice through something more than just fabric.
Cole gasps, stumbling back and dropping his weapon. Kai can’t react before the doors to the monastery burst open and the magic flute is playing and Cole is blinking harshly, confused.
Kai throws his sword, running to Cole and dropping to his knees beside him. Cole is on the ground, looking much like a small child who’s lost their mother in a grocery store.
“Dude, Cole, are you with me?” He asks, ripping his own pajama shirt and holding it over Cole’s wound. It makes a squelching sound, and he can’t suppress a shudder.
“I think so…” he says, though it’s clear enough that he’s still processing. “You’re bleeding!”
It’s now that the pain of almost being stabbed (almost) right through the heart catches up with him. Huh, that adrenaline didn’t last very long.
“Have you seen yourself recently?” He asks instead, if only to distract himself from the burning pain. If he’s in pain, he can’t even imagine how bad it is for Cole.
Someone is beside him, pulling him away from Cole. He fights back, cries out, tries his hardest to stay with him, but they persist. The world blurs around him, and he closes his eyes to avoid getting dizzy. It doesn’t work.
There’s voices, a lot of them. Kai feels like he’s underwater, drifting farther and farther away from anything he should be hearing. Gradually, the world fizzles out.
- - -
He wakes up to whiteness. For a moment, he thinks he’s dead. But then his mind catches up with him, and he realizes that he isn’t dead, just in a hospital. He groans, doing his best to sit up. Nya is beside the bed, slumped over in a chair. He wonders how long she’s been there.
Kai doesn’t want to wake her, but there are questions he needs to ask.
He calls her name in a hushed tone, doing his best not to startle her. She stirs, blinking a few times, then startles and sits up fully.
“You’re awake!” she cries, nearly tripping in her haste to get to him. She hugs him, and he can tell how much she’s restraining herself when it’s awkward and gentle. Normally, she would practically crush him.
“You had me worried sick,” she says, dragging a chair over to the side of the bed. “How are you feeling?”
All in all, he’s had worse. The worst part about this is how groggy he feels. He relays this to his sister, who looks more than relieved.
“Where’s Cole?” he asks. Nya looks uncomfortable, averting her eyes.
“He’s down the hall.” she says after a moment, shifting in her chair. “We weren’t… sure if you’d want to see him.”
Kai stares at her, trying to convey how wrong that is. Of course he wants to see Cole! The idiot is probably miserable, blaming himself for something that he didn’t even do!
“It was the serpentine!” he blurts out, “they did it, not him!”
“No, no, we know! We just weren’t sure if you did.”
“It’s kind of hard to miss red eyes!” In his excitement, he moves too rapidly, and wow that hurts.
Nya helps to situate him, propping up some pillows so he can sit up easier.
“I want to see him,” Kai says.
“I’ll see what I can do. But, the others are gonna wanna see you first.” Nya says, getting up and heading for the door.
Kai sighs, but agrees. He’d much rather see Cole first and make sure he’s okay, but seeing the others isn’t the worst thing he can think of. As long as he actually gets to talk to him.
- - -
“Stupid meddling ninja!” Skales yells, flicking the end of his tail against a rock and launching it against the wall.
He’d been so close, so close, to getting rid of at least one of them, those pesky little brats, and then the others just had to ruin his plans!
He’s still not sure how the white one (whatever his name is) had managed to play the magic flute without actually holding it, but however he’d done it, he forgot to take one thing into consideration.
A recording of the flute, while still somewhat effective, just won’t work as well as the real deal.
While his control over the black ninja may have faded, it’s not completely gone. He can most definitely use this to his advantage.

Dirty and Useless (Part 10)
Summary: Jason Todd had always said there were only two types of cop; Dirty and Useless. So when Y/N comes along with a spunky partner and a laughable code name it’s safe to say they don’t exactly see eye to eye. But if they’ve got anything in common it’s their secrets. Both are hiding behind masks whether they know it or not. Will the Robin get the Nightingale to come out of the shadows? Pairing: Titans!Jason Todd x Reader Word Count: 1449 Warnings: Swearing
Tumblr media
There were many things that Jason Todd would never admit to anyone. The fact that he craved comfort and affirmation was one of those things. The fact that he often found himself in the alley behind his school with new bruises down his side was another one of those things.
Gotham Academy wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. Not that he’d expected anything else but coming into the school – which Bruce practically owned – he’d expected a little more respect. From teachers, he’d heard all about how Dick Grayson had been a mathlete and a social butterfly.
While Jason was more into literature and time spent alone, he had at least assumed that people would be polite. He hadn’t come from a wealthy family but people like him – the Wards of billionaires who own half of Gotham – were supposed to be begrudgingly respected at the very least. Right?
Apparently, he was very, very wrong. In his first week, the other students had made it explicitly clear what they thought about him. Street rat was a name he’d thought had been left behind when he joined Batman’s crusade but the snotty rich boys at the Academy seemed to like it. Although the female population seemed to like Pity Case much better.
“Fuck you, Gregory,” Jason spat up at the rich kid gangs ring-leader.
The brunette snob gargled out in a clearly fake British accent, “Stay down, street rat. Wouldn’t want to have to call your fake dad.”
“I bet he’s never even met a Wayne,” Gregory’s current bottle blonde girlfriend added. “Why would they associate with a pity case like him anyway?”
Jason fumbled to his feet and reminded himself for what seemed like the umpteenth time that day, that he was supposed to be just like them. He was supposed to play his role as protégé son, a rich boy who couldn’t throw a punch. According to Bruce and his disappointment speeches, Dick Grayson had caught on much quicker.
“Of course, I’ve met the Wayne’s,” Jason bit out, “I’m the one who tracked down Y/N Wayne and brought her back to Gotham.”
He knew it was a cheap boast, he had been the one to “find” her but if Y/N hadn’t wanted to return to Gotham, she wouldn’t have. Realistically he hadn’t done shit to find the girl, he’d just been in Chicago at the right time. But Nightingale had taught him something important – it was about wielding symbols. And despite all that the girl could argue, Y/N Wayne was as powerful a symbol as any.
“You talk a lot of shit, Todd.” Gregory brushed at an invisible speck of dirt on his blazer before turning, “Prove it or I’ll make you pay for lying to me.”
Jason really really should learn to keep his mouth shut.
***
It was lunch, four hellish lessons down and he’d finally been given a break. Although sitting under a tree at the front of the academy, trying not to draw too much attention and keeping an eye out for Gregory seemed just as stressful. It was usually at lunch that the boy returned to follow up on whatever threat he’d made to Jason the morning earlier.
“What are you doing hiding out here Street Rat?” Speak of the devil.“Waiting for your fake girlfriend-slash-sister? You know that’s kinda messed up right?”
“Funny, coming from an asshole.” Was all Jason allowed himself to say. He was worried that if he said anything more it would be accompanied by his fist in Gregory’s face.
The bottle-blonde and one of Gregory’s henchmen began giggling, “I bet he’s just dating her to make sure the Wayne’s don’t get rid of him.”
Jason almost expected anger to bubble up, he half thought he might have shoved the blonde on her ass but that rage he’d become so accustomed to wasn’t there. He actually thought this whole thing was hilarious. They thought he was that desperate, that he would make up a story so utterly stupid-
He almost started cackling at the idea. He would have laughed at it, had the revving of a motorcycle engine not interrupted him. Their mismatched group – consisting of Gregory, his flossy and a very unintimidating backup dancer – turned toward the noise in confusion. Even Jason was startled by the bike, which stopped just in front of them.
The rider kicked the stand down, threw their leg over the bike and approached them. Pulling off the black helmet and shaking out H/C hair the rider finally paused in front of the group, raising an eyebrow. Y/N smiled in greeting at Jason, who could only stare dumbly up at her.
“Sup J.T?” Her eyes crinkled mischievously, “Bruce sent me to get you, we need a hand a Wayne Enterprises.”
“Uh-huh yeah,” He took her hand, heaving himself from the floor. “What do you guys need me for?”
“I need someone to go over the specs for the new building in Star City and Bruce needs help planning the next Charity Gala. I’m not interrupting anything am I?”
Y/N’s eyes strayed to Gregory and his entourage before she mouthed a word to Jason. It took the boy wonder a moment to understand her, his lip-reading skills were still a little rusty, not that he’d ever admit it. But after a moment he understood; three.  She wanted him to follow her third condition, play along.
“Nah we were just having a lovely chat,” Jason said dismissively, a smirk working its way to his lips. “Nobody told me about the Gala. Don’t suppose you need a date to it?”
“You wish Jay,” Y/N made a good show of giving him a teasing smile. Then she shoved her helmet back on and handed Jason the second one from her bike.
“W-wait!” Gregory stumbled forward, “You’re Y/N Wayne as in the Lost Daughter of Gotham – What are you doing with someone like him?”
“You mean Jason?” She hopped onto her bike, letting Jason circle his arms around her waist. “He’s the one who brought me back. It’s a pity really, I finally made it away from Gotham, but you know, I grew up in these streets. I guess you can take the girl out of Gotham, but you can’t take Gotham out of the girl.”
***
“How did you know?” Jason finally asked when they stopped at some unnamed park. It was nice, empty and by no means lively, but it wasn’t yet destroyed by the cities night time visitors. Y/N raised an eyebrow in question, though her focus never left the ice cream she’d bought from the car down the street – both were sure it was an undercover GCPD truck but neither commented. “You showed up out of the blue – you said some things like... like you knew. How did you know those things?”
“You’re an ass and all but you’ve got guts. I admire that,” Y/N gave him a playful smile, “But you lack something that can’t be taught.”
Intrigue colored the boy’s face as he sat forward to better look at her. But in a very Wayne like fashion, Y/N only went back to her ice cream. For a moment he simply waited for her to tell him, but evidently leaving Jason to find the answer to his own question was much more entertaining.
“You didn’t,” He suddenly shouted, scrambling for his bag.
“What you lack is attention to detail,” She gave him a smug look, “A vigilante should be able to sniff a tracking device from a mile away. It was all too easy to slip the bug into your bag this morning.”
He groaned lowly, shoving his bag down as he held up the small device, “You were messing with me, is there even really a gala?”
“Oh, there’s a gala, you aren’t getting out of it that easy. But do you think Bruce would ask for your help on it?”
“Who else would he ask?” He snarked.
Y/N fell silent all at once. It startled Jason quite thoroughly – he’d been expecting some quick-witted rebuttal. He eyed the Wayne heiress carefully, wondering if he’d said something wrong. She wouldn’t outright attack him, would she? Jason wouldn’t rule the possibility out, but it was unlikely.
“Sorry,” She chuckled lightly – though her mind still seemed a million miles away, “You just reminded me of someone.”
“Who?”
“Someone gone,” Y/N shook her head, “It doesn’t matter.”
Perhaps Jason was having a stroke, but she seemed almost tender. In an attempt to stop her from falling back into their routine he said, “Tell me.”
She took a long breath. And told him.

When You Least Expect It, Part Eleven
Jensen x Musician!Reader; Briana Buckmaster, Rob Benedict; Gen & Jared Padalecki (mentioned)
Tumblr media
Masterlist - Contains Chapter Links & Wardrobe Collages
A/N: This is a slow burn fic that I have been working on for a while. Its a story I wrote for myself and just wanted to share with everyone. Yes, the “Dee” in the story is who you think, but there is no intended hate on her or their actual marriage. It is a work of fiction, that is all. Part eleven is from the Both POV. There is also a playlist to go along with the series.
A/N Pt. 2: This is a BIG chapter, guys. In length and in the story. This is probably a smidge past the halfway point and as such will serve as a little intermission while I pause to work on a few other things and get my challenge started. So, grab some snacks, get comfy and dive in!
A/N Pt. 3: Below is the link to the playlist. A song used in this chapter, “You’re The One That I Want” <--(youtube link here) is a cover by Alex & Sierra, and if you listen to it where it is within the fic, you’ll have a clearer vision of how it's being performed.
Spotify Playlist: Songs in this chapter - “ You’re The One That I Want ”
I tell her all the time, but I’m beyond grateful for all the help @closetspngirl has given me with this whole thing and specifically this chapter. Check out the wardrobe she put together for the party! She’s the absolute bee's knees!
Chapter Summary: The fall out from the break-in, followed by a tense argument with Jensen, causes Y/N to reach her breaking point. She finally comes to terms with what she wants and tries to find a way to convey this to Jensen.
Chapter Warnings: Language, arguing, angst, smut

“I’m gonna be sick…” Y/N said as she tiptoed through the living room, trying to avoid the mess of broken glass and couch remnants strewn across the floor. She tried to wrap her head around what had transpired, but she could only stand there, blinking absently at what she was seeing.
The couch had been slashed and shredded, pieces of stuffing and swatches of cloth were everywhere. The glass from the coffee table had been broken into a thousand pieces, by what she had no idea. Red wine stained the floor throughout the room and looked as if it was even sprayed on the walls.
“Jesus,” Jensen whispered to himself as he approached the place where the glass balcony doors used to be. “Who the hell wanted to get in here so damn bad that they’d throw a brick through the fucking glass?”
“Sir, if you could just stay on this side of the room, we’re still collecting evidence,” one of the officers called out from the entryway. “You shouldn’t even be here yet.”
Jensen stepped back and took Y/N gently by the shoulders, trying to comfort her the best he could.
“Excuse me,” a new voice chimed in from behind, “you’re the homeowners?”
Jensen and Y/N turned around and was greeted by an older man in his mid-sixties, in a worn dark blue suit. “Yeah, she lives here,” Jensen answered for her and shook the man’s hand.
“I’m Detective Perkins, sorry to have to meet under these circumstances,” he said to Jensen, then looked to Y/N. “I’m sure this is quite upsetting, but if you could think of anyone who may want to scare you--”
“Why would you ask if someone was trying to scare her?” Jensen asked sharply. “It's a burglary, right?”
“Well, no. I don’t think so. Upon inspection of the premises, it appears all electronics and valuables are accounted for. Of course, we will need you to look through everything to see if something’s missing, but a preliminary walk through and assessment of the damage seems more like a scare tactic than an actual break-in.”
“The whole place is like this?” Y/N asked, her voice small and lost in the room.
“Yes, ma’am. I can take you upstairs if you want. If you’d like to gather some items--”
“Yes, please,” she said and exhaled shakily.
“Y/N, I can go up if you want. Why don’t you--”
“No, I have to go. But, please come with me,” she whispered in a broken, defeated tone.
“Of course, I wouldn’t let you go alone.” Jensen took her hand in his and squeezed it, then looked at the detective. “After you.”
When they reached the second floor, Detective Perkins opened her bedroom door. Y/N walked through first and was immediately hit by the strong fragrance of perfume; her own perfume, but far too concentrated. As she walked further into the room, she noticed the closet door was open, and the few clothes that were left hanging up in there were cut into pieces and tossed around the room. The comforter of the bed was wet with what she could only assume was the remnants of her favorite fragrance.
“What the fuck?” She heard Jensen say, and slowly turned around to look where he was looking.
Written across the mirror of her dresser, in dark red lipstick, was the word WHORE. Her throat went dry, and she could feel her body go cold. She now understood why the detective said what he did. This was meant to scare her, right out of Austin and back to New Jersey; back to Nate.
“This has to be Nathan,” she said and took a few steps closer, but stopped, afraid to actually be within reach of the heinous violation.
“Who’s Nathan? He got a last name?” Perkins asked abruptly.
“Fowler,” she said in a near whisper. “Nathan Fowler.”
Detective Perkins took out his little notebook and scribbled down the name before tucking it away and turning to Jensen. “Where were the two of you tonight?”
“All due respect, detective, can the questions wait until tomorrow? I would really like to get what we need and get her out of here.”
“I understand that, but the sooner we can--”
“That’s not mine,” Y/N said, not even hearing the conversation happening beside her. “That… that lipstick…” she pointed at the mirror.
“Ma’am?” Perkins asked.
“The lipstick used to write on the mirror,” she said again and this time took the few extra steps towards it but didn’t dare touch it. “If it was Nathan, he brought that in himself, because it's not mine. I would never wear that color.”
“But I know someone who would wear it,” Jensen mumbled and took a closer look himself. He sighed deeply and bit the inside of his lip to try and help contain some of the rage that had been building.
Y/N noticed the change in his demeanor when his body became more rigid. “What?”
“Dee,” Jensen said through gritted teeth. “I’d know that color anywhere.”
Y/N saw his hands clenching and felt the sudden need to get out of the house. The whole place felt ugly and violated. That, more than the damage that had been done, bothered her most of all.
“Jay, let’s just go. Let them figure out who it was. You don’t know…”
“My gut says it is.”
“No offense, Mr. Ackles, but we can’t arrest someone on your gut,” Perkins replied with an air of condensation. “Why don’t you gather what you need, check to see if there’s any jewelry missing or other valuables. Tomorrow, come on down to the station and you can answer some questions for me, alright?”
Y/N just nodded. Her eyes went back to the mirror and as she saw her reflection through the lipstick crusted words, she knew that regardless if it was Dee or Nathan, they weren’t going away.
“What I need?” she mumbled in a defeated whisper. “I don’t know what to take, I don’t really need anything much I guess,” she said quietly and motioned towards the suitcase that was still packed from various bouts of traveling. “I can just take that. But I’d like to go to the loft and get a few things.”
“Well, that may be a problem,” Perkins groaned and rubbed the back of his neck. “Come on, I’ll show ya.”
The loft was the worst of all the rooms; it had been completely trashed. Papers were torn and thrown around the room. Like the downstairs, the couch had been slashed, stuffing pulled and sprinkled around like soft puffs of snow. Mixed into the fabric batting were small, gray chunks of plastic. It took her a minute, but Y/N finally realized what she was seeing.
“That’s my laptop,” she said pointing to the fragments. “Motherfucker smashed my laptop, too.”
Now she really did feel sick. Y/N wavered on her feet for a moment but Jensen was there to steady her.
“All our work…” she breathed, a swell of nausea rooting in her gut. She shook her head slowly, then was hit by an ironic bout of laughter. “Boy is Robbie gonna give me a big ‘I told you so’.”
Jensen looked at her curiously. “Uh, why?”
“The cloud. He’s a lunatic about uploading everything to the cloud. So the important stuff is saved, but… All these papers will have to be reprinted. We have to--”
“That can wait,” Jensen interjected gently. “It’s not important right now, okay? Just grab whatever you came up here for, and let’s get out of the way so they can do what they need to.”
She walked further into the room and saw the broken picture frame peeking out from under a piece of the laptop’s keyboard. The frame had been destroyed, but the picture of her father was thankfully still intact. She carefully slid it from the broken glass and folded it before putting it in her back pocket.
Y/N continued to scan the room, then began to panic when she couldn’t find her guitar. She had left it against the wall earlier that morning but it wasn’t there now. Y/N walked towards the drum kit at the far end of the room and saw how someone beat on it relentlessly with something, and that’s when she knew…
“No…” she whispered, and despite being asked not to touch anything, she began to sift through the wreckage of the room. “No, no, no…” she just kept saying over and over as the white puffs of batting were floating through the air around her.
Jensen was by her side and trying to pull her up from doing so, but it was too late. Beneath the mess of debris, was the remnants of her guitar. Slowly she bent down and found the wooden neck of her old Gibson. She cradled it for a minute and ran her fingers along the fractured frets and curled strings. An ache began to grow in her chest, and Y/N sat back on the floor with a thud, not caring about what was beneath her. The splintered piece of guitar fell into her lap when she put her head in her hands, then began to cry. Her shoulders shook silently as the magnitude of what she’d just lost sunk in. Jensen sat beside her with his arms around her shoulders, letting her lean into his chest and just cry as he rocked her gently in an effort to give her comfort. He closed his eyes and rested his lips to her hair, kissing her head and desperately wishing he could somehow make this all better.
Detective Perkins allowed them a few minutes before he cleared his throat to try and get Jensen’s attention.
“Mr. Ackles…”
“Yeah,” he said, partially turning towards Perkins, and seeing the uniformed officers waiting to search the room. “One minute.”
Jensen turned back to Y/N and brushed away the hair that had obscured her face. “Hey, sweetheart…” he tone was gentle and soft. “...we have to go. They need to get in here, so they can figure out--”
“Nate. It had to be,” she said flatly, but when she looked up at him, her eyes were anything but. They were wet and vibrating with disgust, anger, and sadness. Jensen had never seen her this way, and the look she wore broke his heart and as he used the pad of his thumb to gently wipe away the tears that rested on her cheeks.
“We need to let them prove that, then. They can’t do that when we’re in the way.”
Jensen started to stand, and Y/N followed his lead without hesitation. “Anything besides the suitcase?” he asked. “What about Mama’s things?”
Y/N shook her head. “She’s staying at the Marriott. I told her to stay here, but she didn’t want to in case we wanted the place to ourselves.” Y/N snorted a laugh and smiled apologetically, despite still trembling from the emotion she just expelled.
Jensen shook his head with slight exasperation. “Well, bless her heart, she really is something.” He waited for Y/N to retrieve the piece of the guitar from the floor before he put his arm around her shoulder, turning her towards the door and away from the heartbreaking scene.
“Ma’am, you really can’t take that with you, its evidence,” one of the officers said and motioned towards the piece of the guitar in her hand.
Y/N froze and looked at the broken instrument in her hand. She took a moment to let her eyes glaze over it because she knew that leaving it here meant she would never see it again. A touch of Jensen’s hand on the upper part of her arm gave her the strength to set it down and lean it gently against the wall.
“Sorry, ma’am,” the officer said quietly when he saw the weight of sadness in her eyes.
“Come on, let’s get out of here,” Jensen said and lead her from the house.
Jensen lifted her suitcase into the back of his truck and climbed into the driver’s side. Y/N was already buckled in, her fingers absently toying with the pendant he bought her. They sat in silence for a moment just absorbing everything that had happened in the span of the last hour.
“My dad bought me that guitar,” she said once he was settled in the truck. “Found it in a pawn shop near the house when I was twelve. It was old and out of tune, but I loved it and nursed it back to health. Now it’s…” she trailed off with a delicate sigh, and shrugged one shoulder up enough to brush the fresh tears off her cheek. “Where am I gonna go, Jay?” she asked, her voice small and broken. “I can’t… I don’t wanna be here, even if it's clean--”
“You stay with me. End of story,” he said matter-of-factly.
“Jensen…”
“Don’t Jensen, me. You’re staying at my place and that’s that.” He was forceful but still gentle in his tone.
“And how’s that gonna work? You’re in Vancouver now. I’m just going to live at your place?”
“Y/N,” he started, “Let’s just start with tonight, okay? Let’s go back to my house, call Bri and Mama. Tell them what happened. Tomorrow we’ll go see Perkins and figure out things from there.”
“Okay,” she said, then looked out the window. The lights from the cop cars were still disturbing the otherwise peaceful neighborhood, and it brought on a different wave of sadness. She felt the sting of tears at her eyes again but didn’t bother wiping them away.
“Hey, you alright?” he asked softly as he started the ignition.
“I just hate that this is how I’ll remember this place now. I hate that my memories of it turned so ugly.”
“You really liked this place, huh?”
Y/N nodded. “It was home. I never expected it to really feel like mine, you know? It was just a place to live when I first came here. But, I don’t know… somewhere along the line, it became home.”
She looked away from the window and back at Jensen. Seeing him there made her feel a little better, but it wasn’t enough to shake the sense of being violated. Just like the morning, he took her to the airport, she slid across the seat and tucked herself into the crook of his arm. Y/N closed her eyes and from deep within his chest, she could hear Jensen’s heart beating, slow and rhythmic, helping her find some semblance of peace in an otherwise chaotic night.
Tumblr media
Y/N woke up and couldn’t remember where she was. She rubbed the sleep from her eyes and felt like she was hungover, yet never had a drop of alcohol the night before. She slowly blinked and stretched her arms over her head and tried to remember where she was. The scent of Jensen was so strong around her, but when she sat up from the bed, he was nowhere to be seen, bringing on a bout of disappointment. Y/N looked around and tried to recall exactly how she got there, and when she saw her suitcase was there by the bathroom door, the rush of memories become clearer in her mind.
Jensen had brought her back to his house the night before, where they sat on his couch quietly for the longest time. She didn’t want to talk. He could sense that in her so he just let her rest against him, eventually turning on the television but not really watching anything. Y/N just stared blankly at the screen while he stroked her hair and made the occasional comment about what they were watching.
When she was finally tired enough to sleep, he insisted she take his bed. Y/N remembered crawling onto the King-sized mattress slowly, and letting herself sink into the pillows with heavy eyes. She felt Jensen lay beside her then drape his arm across her side, pulling her close, then holding her that way until she was asleep.
Y/N sat up all the way and enjoyed the quiet moment being in Jensen’s personal space. Even though he didn’t get to spend much time there, pieces of him were strewn about the room and for her, it was calming. She drew her legs up into her chest and wrapped her arms around them, then rested her chin on her knee. Closing her eyes, she drew in a deep breath and exhaled slowly through puckered lips, while she kept telling herself, everything would be fine. She needed to be calm, she needed to feel in control, but most of all, she needed to shower. Though she doubted that would make her feel clean. This kind of grime couldn’t be washed away with soap and water.
Eventually, she made herself get up, and open her suitcase to find something suitable to wear for the day. Y/N went into the bathroom that was right off the bedroom and saw the pile of fluffy towels he’d left for her.
Y/N shook her head and chuckled softly. “This guy. He’s too much.”
As she stood under the nearly scalding hot water, her mind drifted to the scene at her house. It was just a mess. No one had been hurt, and anything that had been broken was easily replaceable. Well, almost. She felt the sting of tears again and fought them back. Instead, she tried to focus on Jensen.
He wasn’t even supposed to be in town yesterday, she thought as she rinsed the shampoo from her hair and let the water cascade down her back. She felt lucky to have him, though there were still plenty of moments in any given day where she was still baffled about how she did have him in the first place.
Out of the shower, and dressed for the day, Y/N just finished running the brush through her hair when there was a soft knock at the door.
“Come in,” she called and waited for the door to open.
“Mornin’ Trix,” Jensen smiled softly, the crinkles deepening around his eyes. “Sleep alright?”
“Morning,” she said and placed the brush back in her suitcase. “Not bad I guess. Where did you sleep? You weren’t here when I woke up.”
“I, uh… I went downstairs and slept on the couch for a little while.”
“Why? You could have stayed, it’s your bed after all.”
“It’s fine,” he said, waving her off. “You hungry? I could make you some breakfast.”
Y/N shook her head, and moved towards him, closing the gap between them. “I’m good for now. Maybe after the police station. I need to be there soon, right?”
“Yeah.” Jensen seemed nervous. His muscles were noticeably tense and it wasn’t like him to be in the room with her for more than a minute without reaching out for her, or touching her in some kind of way. She knew his signs and could see he wanted to say something, but either didn’t have the nerve, or was being cautious in starting the conversation.
“Something on your mind?” she asked and grabbed his crossed arms to pull him closer. He unfurled them and embraced her, as hers went and around his waist.
“There is, but it can wait until after. I wanted to make sure you were alright after everything last night.”
“I’m as good as I’m going to be for the moment. So, talk to me, what’s up?”
Jensen kissed her forehead and broke apart from her embrace. “I have to go back to Vancouver tonight. I’m sorry that I can’t stay--”
“It’s fine, Jay. Mama is in town for a couple more days. I can stay with her at the Marriott--”
“No. Hell no. You stay here,” he said pointedly. “You can stay here for as long as you want to.”
“I can’t do that,” she said and ran her fingers through her hair. “I can’t live with you, Jensen.”
“No, I mean, I’m barely here. When I go back tonight, I won’t be back until the morning of Jared’s party and that’s next week. Bri offered to come stay here with you, too.”
“You talked to Briana about it before me?”
“She called this morning while you were still sleeping. She asked where you were going to go.”
Y/N’s head was spinning and she didn’t want to talk about this at the moment. “I don’t know, okay? Can I just go to the police station and see what they say?”
“Yeah, but, I want you to know you can stay here. It would make me feel a hell of a lot better knowing you were here and safe than in a hotel somewhere.”
Y/N sighed and when she saw how deep the concern ran on his face, she felt this was a battle that just wasn’t worth fighting. “Just till Jared’s party. Then I will figure something else out.”
“WE will figure it out,” Jensen smiled.
“No… I will. I need to handle this on my own. Find a new place of my own. I can’t have you swoop in and fix it.”
“I just want to help you. You realize you don’t have to do it alone, right? I’m here, Y/N. For you… for whatever you need.”
“And I appreciate that,” she said. “But I need to be independent, I won’t ever put myself in a position where I am reliant on another person, again. Not when it comes to something this big.”
Jensen just stared at her, fighting the urge to turn the conversation a way it didn’t need to go. He could understand where she was coming from and didn’t want to belittle her need for self-reliance.
“Ok,” he agreed and decided he wouldn’t press the issue. “Whatever you wanna do. But, you’ll stay through the week, at least?”
“Yes, ‘til then. At least.”
“Ok good. Thank you. Oh, you know… after the weekend of Jare’s party, we leave for comic con. You should come.”
Y/N was in the middle of adjusting her layers of clothes and stopped mid-motion. “To San Diego?”
“Yeah, why not?”
She snorted a laugh and shook her head. “No thanks, I’m good.”
Jensen scrunched his face, slightly offended by her response. “No thanks? Why not?”
“There is so much to do, Jay. I can’t just up and go to San Diego. There are at least three separate meetings planned with the high school kids to work on the sets for the theater. Not to mention dealing with the carnage of the office.” She exhaled slowly and closed her eyes at the notion of the paperwork catch up she would have to do now. Everything had been organized in the office, and while it was backed up digitally, she needed to scour through everything with a fine-toothed comb.
“You can work from there. It will be fun! Come on, I promise--”
“No!” she snapped. “I… I don’t--I can’t go to San Diego, Jensen. Why are you pushing this so much?”
Jensen’s mouth pulled taught and he folded his arms again, while his tongue ran nervously across his bottom lip. “Because I don’t like the idea of you being here alone.”
“But, you literally just said--”
“Yeah, and Briana will be here, so you won’t be alone.”
Y/N sighed and rolled her eyes. “So now I can’t be alone? What the hell? Jay, this is crazy... why are you being pushy?”
“Crazy? You wanna talk crazy? Last night some lunatic threw a brick through your back door then proceeded to SLASH things all over the place. Slash! Y/N, with a fucking knife! What the hell would have happened if you were home? Hm? What the HELL would they have done to you?”
“The thought crossed my mind and its scary as hell to think about. But I wasn’t there, and I’m fine. I can’t live my life scared… not again,” she said as calmly as she could, but inside she felt anything but calm. Her mind flashed to how she lived after getting out of the hospital from when Nathan hit her. Y/N promised herself she would never live that way again.
“They could have hurt you... Raped you! Killed you! I don’t know! Then what would I have done?!” He had never raised his voice with her before and only did so now because he was scared. It was written through every line on his face, in every vein that pulsated with his blood. His jaw was clenched and his fists were methodically opening and closing as he tried to release some of the tension he felt.
Y/N was speechless. The fire in Jensen’s expression was new to her, and it caused her breath to catch in her chest.
“If you think for one damn second, that I’m going to risk the life of the woman I love just because you need to prove how independent you are--”
Y/N’s stomach dropped. “What the fuck did you just say?” she asked cautiously, the words nearly sticking in her throat.
Jensen was confused at first, unsure of what part she was referring too. But then his shoulders fell at the realization of what he said. He didn’t regret it, because it was true; he was in love with her. But this wasn’t how he wanted to say it, and by the expression she wore, he could see it wasn’t what she was hoping for, either. There was no going back now though, regardless of whether she wanted to hear it, or not.
“I said,” he took a couple steps closer to her. “I won’t risk your life, the woman I am in love with just so you can be stubborn and independent.”
Y/N took a step back from him, dazed by his admission. Suddenly she couldn’t look at him. A burning bout of rage erupted from her gut.
“Why would you say that, now? So, I would fall into your arms and do what you wanted?”
“What? No! I meant what I said, Y/N. I do, I love you! I certainly didn’t mean to just blurt it out, but I would never use it to manipulate you! You should know me better than that.”
“Honestly, I don’t know what I am thinking. My head is so turned around with everything that’s happened, Jensen. From meeting you to crisscrossing the country, to Nathan, to the break in, to… fucking… Dee and her God damned phone calls. I am exhausted! Mentally, physically, just exhausted! So, I’m sorry, if I misinterpreted your grand declaration, but fuck you very much for doing that right now!”
Y/N immediately regretted the harshness of her reaction. But it wasn’t something someone could take back so easily. The way Jensen’s expression fell broke her heart because the last thing she ever wanted to do was hurt him. She just wanted room to breathe, clear her head and try to comprehend the events of the last twenty-four hours.
The room grew completely silent as they stood there staring at each other. It was less than a minute, but that minute felt like forty years. Y/N closed her eyes and exhaled deeply, knowing this needed to be addressed, but she just couldn’t right then.
“Look, I need to clear my head and get some air. I’m going to head to the police station and get that over with. Can we talk when I get back?”
“Yeah, sure. Take the truck. Keys are on the kitchen counter,” he said quietly, his eyes staring straight ahead, unable to look at her as she walked past him.
“Thanks,” she rasped and headed towards the door to the room. She hesitated before walking through, wondering if she should stay and try to fix things. But with the way her head was buzzing and the anxiety churning in her gut, she thought it better to follow her instincts and just give them a bit of space. She wasn’t running away, just calling a timeout.
“I’ll call you and let you know what they say,” she said with a small sigh, hoping it would ease some of the tension she’d just caused.
“Good, thanks.” Jensen still didn’t turn around. He stood in the middle of the quiet room trying to wrap his head around what just happened. When he heard the front door close from below, and the familiar sound of his truck’s engine in the driveway, he finally turned and headed downstairs.
Twenty minutes after Y/N left, Jensen was half lounging on his couch, one leg stretched out across the cushions, one hanging over the edge. His arm was covering his face with his eyes closed. He wasn’t sleeping but trying to rest his mind and hush the self-destructive line of thought that was giving him a headache. The soft knock at the door made him slowly stir from the couch. It stopped and started more than once by the time he got there to open.
“Alright, Jesus…” he grumbled and pulled the door open.
Briana’s smiling face greeted him along with a very bright sun. “Rise and shine, sleepyhead!” she sang and pushed her way in while holding a tray of disposable coffee cups, and a bag full of donuts. “I come bearing gifts. Where’s Y/N?”
Jensen closed the door behind her and helped to relieve her of the tray of coffee. He carried them into the kitchen with Briana following close behind.
“Uh, she left for the police station about a half hour ago,” he said, pulling a cup with his name on the side out and drinking it greedily. He sighed with relief as the heat of the coffee warmed his throat. “Thanks for the caffeine.”
“My pleasure,” Bri smiled, then immediately furrowed her brow. “Why are you here and not with her at the police station?”
Jensen snorted a laugh and tilted his head to the side slightly. “Long story.”
“I got time, coffee and donuts, Ackles. Spill it.”
Trying to ignore her, Jensen picked up the bag of donuts and peered inside. He could feel Briana’s eyes on him and realized there was no way she was going to stop asking. He rolled the bag back up and tossed it back to the counter.
“I had planned to go with her, but she wanted to go alone,” he sighed. It was the truth, sort of.
“Mhm, and?”
“And… what?”
“You could have insisted you go. This can’t be easy for her.”
“I pushed her enough this morning. I wasn’t going to do it again.”
“Pushed her how? What the hell happened?”
Jensen leaned back against the counter and took a drink from his cup. “We were talking about where she could go now. She doesn’t want to go back to the townhouse, and I don’t blame her. So I told her to stay here, what we talked about.”
“Right, makes sense. She didn’t go for it?”
“Not at first, but eventually she agreed to at least stay for the week, til I’m back again.”
“Alright, so what’s the problem then?”
“I tried to get her to go to San Diego. She doesn’t want to--”
“And you tried to push her to go?”
“Yeah. But… I got pissed, scared, is more like it. I can’t help but think about what could have happened to her, Bri. What if she had been home when that happened? I cannot get that out of my head. I could have lost her.”
“Did you tell her that?” Bri asked quietly.
Jensen nodded. “That and then some.”
“Explain, please.”
“In the midst of trying to make a point I blurted out that I was in love with her,” he said with a wince and watched Briana’s expression transform into a mix of surprise, excitement, and panic.
“Oh… Jensen… how--how did that go over? I thought you weren’t going to tell her yet!”
“Wasn’t on purpose, Bri. Trust me. And it did NOT go over well.”
“That’s why she went alone,” Bri mumbled in understanding. “That makes more sense now. What did she say?”
Jensen gave her a look that said, ‘please don’t make me answer that’, to which Bri understood perfectly and relented.
“I’m so sorry, honey,” she said and walked around the kitchen to give him a hug.
Jensen didn’t realize how much he needed one. He returned his friend’s hug, suddenly very glad she was there and forcing him to talk about it. When they pulled back from the embrace, Bri immediately balled up her fist and punched him in the arm.
“Ow! What the fuck, Bri!? What was that for?”
“For telling her you loved her in an argument, ya dumbass,” she snorted and shook her head. “You don’t do that! Especially not the first time you’re gonna tell a girl you love her!”
“I told you it wasn’t on purpose! You didn’t have to hit me, damn.”
“Well next time you need to stop and think before you speak. That girl has gotta be spiraling right now. She was already overwhelmed with work, it’s why me and Mama are even here. She needed help. Then, the break-in and now this. She’s on overload, Jensen.”
“Why didn’t she tell me she was that overwhelmed? I’ve told her--”
“Right, and she’s just as stubborn as you are! You were in Vancouver. She wasn’t going to interrupt your schedule there for help with traveling, paperwork, and setlists... backdrops, social media… you name it, she’s doing it. My point is, she was already on the edge of having a little breakdown, and maybe what you said just pushed her over.”
“That’s the last thing I wanted,” he said. “Why is it whenever you feel like things are good, something comes along and just kicks you right in the balls?”
“That’s life, my friend,” Bri mused. “I guess you can only thing you can really control is how you respond.” She shrugged and looked at him with a tilt of her head. “So, how you gonna respond to this one?”
Jensen gave her a deadpan stare and shook his head. “Do I look like I know what the hell I’m doing?”
Bri laughed. “Do any of us?” She pushed off the counter and stood directly in front of him, taking him by the upper parts of his arms, and forcing him to look into her eyes. “Please, do not let whatever she said to you this morning, derail the amazing potential you two have. You, my friend, have a girl that is head over heels crazy for you. She’s scared as hell that she’s going to lose herself in loving you.”
Bri let his arms go and gave him a warning look. “Now, I just violated best friend code to tell you that, as it came from a confidential conversation during a night of girl talk.” She wagged her finger in his face. “Don’t make me regret it.”
Jensen laughed and held up his pinky. “Pinky promise.”
“Atta boy,” Bri giggled and winked at him then hooked her pinky with his. “Look, I need to run, I promised Y/N I would take this morning’s appointment over at the community college with the theater director. But, you call me or have her call me, okay? I want to know what happened at the station and with this...” she made a swirling motion with her finger in his general direction.
Jensen chuckled. “I will. Thanks, Bri,” he said and hugged her again.
She left a quick peck on his cheek. “Love ya, buddy. Hang in there, okay? Things will be fine. I know it.” Bri grabbed her coffee from the counter and headed towards the front door. With one last wave, she was out the door and off to her appointment.

It was late afternoon by the time Y/N got back to Jensen’s. She found him in the bedroom, re-packing his suitcase for the trip back to Vancouver. He didn’t sense her at first, so she watched him neatly roll up his clothes and place them into the open luggage. By the look of his slumped shoulders and slow, methodical movements of folding and packing, it looked like he was going through the motions, but she could tell that he was doing so reluctantly.
She felt terrible about how they had left things that morning and thought about nothing else, aside from the break-in; and that had only been when she was sitting and discussing it with Detective Perkins earlier. Jensen had been nothing but good in her life, but his timing of feelings was just something she wasn’t ready for right then. Somehow she needed to tell him that she just wanted to, for now, pretend it didn’t happen and keep going on the path they had previously chosen.
“Hey,” she said and took a tentative step into the room. “Need some help?”
Jensen turned around, slightly startled by her entrance, but she felt a little relieved when he smiled upon he saw her.
“I’m just about done, but thanks,” he said and placed the last item in before flipping the lid closed, but not zipping it. “How’d it go?”
“Alright, I guess. They don’t know anything yet. Perkins mostly asked about Nathan. I imagine you’ll be getting a call soon. He mentioned wanting to talk to you, too.”
“Because I brought up Dee?”
Y/N nodded and took a few steps closer to him. “I told him you were leaving for work later tonight, but he said he would call soon.”
It was Jensen’s turn to nod. He drew a deep breath, ready to try and clear the air of awkwardness between them. But Y/N beat him to it.
“Jay, I’m sorry about earlier. I shouldn’t have snapped at you like that. I know you wouldn’t actually say--you know--to purposely manipulate me. I’m sorry I even thought about it for a second.”
“It’s okay. And, I’m sorry for pushing you. I don’t have the right to tell you what to do.” He wanted to say more, but he could sense she just wanted to let it go for now. After what happened that morning, he was learning more about her boundaries and wouldn’t continue to test them.
“Can we just, rewind, start over for today? I know you have to leave tonight and I don’t want you to go with things weird between us.”
“Me either,” he said and reached out to take her hand. “Are you hungry? Did you eat?”
Y/N shook her head. “Haven’t had much of an appetite today. Did you?”
“Not yet. But, I did order a pizza earlier. Figured you’d be hungry when you got back.”
“And you got me a pizza?” she asked wistfully, looking up at him with wide, dreamy eyes. “You get me. You really get me.”
Jensen chuckled softly and pulled her in with ease. He wrapped his arms around her shoulders, as she rested her head against his chest and hugged him around the waist.
“We ok?” he whispered into her hair.
“Yeah, Jay. We’re good.” Y/N felt his body sigh with relief, as she looked up at him. She stood up a little straighter and kissed his lips gently.
The rest of the evening had been quiet. Y/N recanted her conversation with Detective Perkins, they discussed some festival business and just kept the conversation light and kept clear of anything regarding that morning. Hours later, after consuming the pizza and a half of a Netflix movie, Y/N had fallen asleep, with her head on his shoulder. Jensen dozed off a few times himself until around midnight when his phone vibrated alerting him that it was time to leave. Outside there would be a car waiting to bring him to the airport, and now, more than ever, he wished he didn’t have to go.
Jensen watched her sleeping for a moment and decided not to wake her. He got up cautiously, doing his best not to disturb her. When he was standing, he gently guided her to a more comfortable position on the couch and covered her with the blanket that rested along the back. He went into the kitchen and grabbed a piece of paper and a pen, and scribbled a note for her. He folded it in half and left it on the coffee table where she could easily see it before he left.
Once he was sure she was still in a deep sleep, he knelt beside the couch and lightly brushed her hair from her face.
Jensen leaned forward and left a soft kiss on her temple. “I know you don’t wanna hear it right now Trix, but I do love you,” he whispered.
She didn’t stir. Jensen took one more long look at her, and tried to remember every little detail; the soft sound of her snoring, the way her hair spilled across the throw pillow, how the soft glow from the TV highlighted the contours of her face and neck. The corner of his mouth lifted into a small smile, and even though things weren’t perfect he knew that it didn’t matter because he loved her. For now, that was enough for him. His phone vibrated again, this time a text from the car service letting him now they were waiting out front. He glanced her way one last time and left the house quietly for the airport.
A week later, and Y/N was already tired of Austin’s summer. The temperatures were reaching triple digits and the humidity could give Jersey’s mid-year season a run for its money. Bri had come to stay with her at Jensen’s house for a few days after he left, which was blessedly cool and equipped with a small swimming pool out back. Unfortunately, they spent most of the time running around Austin, going from one location to the next and dealing with coming and going in and out of the heat. The only thing that kept them going was knowing how much of an impact that what they were doing was going to make on the festival, and by extension, for the city itself.  It was exhausting, but between that and spending time with Mama while she was there, it was helping to keep her brain occupied and not think about the break-in.
The day before Jared’s party, Briana left to go meet some family who was visiting in Dallas. Promising she would be back in time for Jared’s party, Y/N said goodbye from the porch of Jensen’s house and watched her go. It wasn’t until she went back inside, closed and locked the door did she realize that she was alone again. At first, she tried to ignore the feeling that was tingling beneath her outward exterior. It was a barely there sensation, but enough to make her take notice.
She picked up the phone to call Jensen more than a few times, but after their argument about her being alone, the last thing she wanted to do was admit he was right.
Maybe going to San Diego isn’t the worst idea in the world… she thought as she mulled around the kitchen, trying to decide what she wanted to do. She didn’t want to eat, or watch TV; for the first time that week, she had no desire to go for a swim. If she was being honest with herself, she just wanted to be where Jensen was.
They hadn’t talked much that week. A call or text a day was all there had been time for. She tried not to think it was due to the way things had been their last day together. Jensen had left her a sweet note, and though she was sad he didn’t wake her, she understood why he didn’t. Now, he was due home by the next day for the party, and Y/N found herself just counting the hours.
Sleep found her eventually when she retreated to the guest room she’d been staying in and laid down with one of the books she found in the living room. Her slumber was broken and filled with dreams, but it helped the time pass as the moon set and sun rose on another bright, humid day. She had woken later than she wanted but took the time to throw on her slippers and go down to the kitchen to make coffee. Once it was done, she took it back upstairs with her, sipping it slowly as she went about getting her clothes ready for the day and preparing to take a quick shower.
Y/N had just stepped out of the shower and went back into the guest room to dress when she heard a soft knock at the door. It started to open as she spun around in surprise, and pulled her towel close against her.
“Hey, Y/N are you--” Jensen’s face came through the door. The instant he saw her in just a towel he froze.
The air in the room suddenly felt thick, making it hard to breathe. Jensen and Y/N locked eyes every so briefly before his gaze continued down the length of her body. Seeing her like that--skin still wet and glistening, and MORE of her than he’d seen before--especially after not seeing her for a week--left him reeling. Jensen felt more than just a twitch of arousal beneath his shorts, then quickly looked away, and apologized profusely.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t realize… I’ll go--let you change…” he stuttered and moved nervously out of the room, leaving Y/N to laugh.
“Just give me a minute,” she called out and tried to calm the rush of heat that flourished in her cheeks. Y/N sat on the edge of the bed, her heart racing from the momentary encounter. She figured it was just because he took her by surprise, but deep down she knew it was all because of how he looked at her. Somehow, she got herself together, got dressed and met him downstairs a few minutes later.
Y/N found Jensen in the kitchen, leaning on the island counter with his elbows, scrolling through his phone. When he saw her, he stood up straighter, a dream-like expression on his face, and a smile that brought out the crinkles around his eyes.
“I, uh, I’m sorry about that… I just… I figured you’d heard me come in, and…”
“It’s fine. No big deal,” she said, her heart still beating faster than normal. “What time do we have to leave?”
“Uh, now, actually. Just got a text from Bri, she’s running late and will meet everyone at the dock.”
“Dock?”
“Yeah, apparently Gen is having this luau in a private cove. She thought it would be fun to rent a big ole boat for everyone to get there.”
“Oh… and how are we getting back? Also boat?”
“No,” he chuckled, “she hired a car service or rentals, I don’t know… either way, there are cars there to take people from the cove to wherever they wanted to go. This way they can leave whenever they want.”
“Seems like she thought of everything,” Y/N said and moved further into the kitchen before leaving a canvas tote bag on the stool. “I grabbed a change of clothes, just in case.”
“Good thinking. I should too. Let me do that and we’ll go.”
She watched him run upstairs, taking them two by two and expelled a breath she didn’t realize she was holding. Things had been fine between them, and even after the unexpected encounter upstairs, something still felt off. Not terribly… but for the first time since, forever, he didn’t try to touch her in any way. She tried not to worry about it, but not all of her old self-destructive habits were gone. In the time between him going up and then coming back downstairs, she had herself convinced that he had finally lost interest.
“Ready?” he asked, slinging a Jansport over his shoulder.
“Mhm,” she mumbled, then grabbed her bag, forcing a smile and praying he didn’t see the fear on her face.
As they pulled up to the dock, Y/N could immediately pick out their group ready to board when she spotted Jared towering over the lot of them. Jensen grabbed their bags from the bed of the truck and handed Y/N hers as they walked down the sidewalk towards the group. Once all the hugs and greetings were dispensed, everyone boarded and found a place to settle in for the two-hour ride to the cove.
The moment Robbie saw Y/N, he pounced on her. “My girl! You’re here and that makes me very happy. Missed you! Also, we really, really need to chat. Today might not be good, but what are your plans tomorrow?”
“If today goes as I imagine it will, my plans will be to nurse the hangover I assume I’ll have. Why? What’s up?”
Robbie pulled her down into the galley and away from the crowd. “What do you mean, what’s up? Um, you got your house broken into and the loft was destroyed. WE have too--”
“It's done, Robbie. I recovered everything from the cloud, got it reprinted, refiled and safely stored in Jensen’s office. Crisis averted.”
Rob’s face went from panic to pleasantly surprised in a matter of a second. “Well damn, girl. I guess, then, the only other thing we need to talk about is your music and which of it you want to sing on stage with us. I wrap in Vancouver soon, and I want to get the guys back down here so we can start working on a couple of those songs you got.”
Y/N’s heart sank; not because of what Rob said, but because it just reminded her, again, that she no longer had her guitar.
“Yeah, we’ll talk soon, Rob. Let’s get through today and we’ll chat. Cool?”
“Perfect,” he replied with an affirmative nod. He paused and took a closer look at her expression and could see the heavy emotion behind her faux smile. He sighed, and put his hand on her shoulder, giving her a friendly squeeze. “I’m so sorry about what happened to the townhouse. When Jensen told me, I--I just couldn’t--I mean, who…” he trailed off in a huff. “I just don’t get it.”
“Me either. But, cops are working on it,” she shrugged and then cleared her throat. “If it’s all the same to you, I’d rather not think about it tonight.”
“Of course, I’m sorry, I should’ve--”
“Robert,” she snorted a laugh and shook her head, “it’s fine. Let’s go join the others, okay? I need to find Bri.”
Rob escorted Y/N back out onto the deck where the others were sitting around on the cushioned seats that lined the perimeter of the yacht. Gen and Jared were sitting with Jason and one of Gen’s friends, a few others were scattered around as well, while Jensen and Bri were sitting close to each other near the stern. They looked as if they were having an intense conversation, and Y/N felt unsure about approaching them. She didn’t want to intrude on whatever they were talking about, so once Robbie took his leave and went to join Gen and Jared, Y/N quietly slipped back down into the galley.
A burst of laughter came from the deck, drawing her attention towards the small steps that lead out. Bri was approaching her, a large, giddy grin drawing her full lips to stretch from ear to ear.
“Whatcha doin’ hiding in here, honey? Thought I saw you were heading over to join us.”
“Yeah, I was,” she started, then suddenly felt stupid for turning away from them. “I just figured I would use the bathroom real quick, then come out.”
Bri called her out on her blatant lie with one stern raise of her brow. “Really?” she asked, flatly.
From out on the deck, the sounds of a guitar could be heard playing, no doubt it was Robbie and Jensen messing around.
“I don’t know exactly what’s up with you, I mean, besides being freaked about the break-in and overloaded with work. But, if it’s what I think it is--”
“What do you think it is?” Y/N asked, cutting off her thought.
“I know what he said to you, Y/N. I came by that day after you left and we talked.”
“Why didn’t you tell me? We just spent the week together!” Y/N huffed, mildly embarrassed that Briana knew and also a little annoyed that she wasn’t the one to tell her.
“Because you weren’t ready to talk about it or you would have brought it up. But as this little excursion goes on, I can see that you around him now, is weird. Look,” Bri took her arm and pulled her further into the room and away from the music. “He loves you. You need to tell him how you feel, or…”
“Or, what? He said he was okay with slow, he said--”
“Stop. Y/N, listen to me. Jensen would wait a million years for you to be ready. I’m sayin’ for YOUR sake… just tell the boy you love him already or you’re gonna drive yourself insane.”
Y/N swallowed Bri’s words down, right along with the lump in her throat. Once again, her friend hit the nail on the head. She needed to just shed the last of that force field that she was holding onto, and tell Jensen how she felt.
Nearly two hours later, the yacht was positioning itself to dock at the cove. Waiting on the long wooden pier that jettisoned out from the sandy beach were four people, all decked out in leis, grass skirts, and Hawaiian shirts. Jared threw the lines for the boat as the captain parked her perfectly flush with the dock.
Y/N stayed seated as the others started to disembark. Robbie’s guitar was laying next to her, and knowing he wouldn’t mind, she picked it up and started to pick at the string. Without thinking about it, she was struck by that same tune she had been over the winter.
‘You’re the one that I want… oo oo oo, honey…’
The reverb from the guitar faded as she let her fingers fall from the strings and let her mind take her back to that morning on the beach. She had just met him, and even though he was still a stranger, sort of mysterious, he was still somehow, familiar. That song intruded on her thoughts then, too. He was, after all, the one that she wanted; deep down she knew that after he jumped into a cold ocean just to get her to say yes. She just needed to figure out a way to tell him so he knew that she really meant it. Y/N felt like she owed him that considering how his admission caused her to react.
“Y/N… hey!” Jensen called out. “You with us?”
She snapped back to reality and saw him standing in front of her; his hand outstretched to help her up.
“Yeah, sorry, got lost for a minute,” she took his hand and rose from the seat, still holding Robbie’s guitar.
“You can leave your bag on the boat, it will be here all night,” he said and then he looked at her curiously. She realized he saw that she wasn’t completely herself, but didn’t ask her about it. He didn’t have too, because he felt it too. Though they had been okay, that thing still hung over them, and both of them desperately wanted it to rectify it.
But how?
“Oh, great. Okay,” she smiled and with her hand still in his, followed him to disembark.

Genevieve Padalecki went all out for her husband’s birthday. Y/N wandered around in awe of everything she had arranged. The entire party was set up on a small, private cove about the size of a football field. There were several tiki bars across the area, a bonfire pit, volleyball net, a roped off swimming area, barrels scattered throughout the cove; some of which were filled with water guns, water balloons and some filled with ice and bottles of beer, water and soda.
“Nice, huh?” Jensen asked as he came up behind her. He placed his hand on the small of her back, and she jumped slightly at his touch. “Whoa! You alright? Did I scare you?”
“No,” she breathed and could feel her heart start pounding again. “Maybe. A little. It's fine, I was just distracted. And yeah, what Gen did here… holy shit.”
“You want a drink? Hungry?”
“No, I’m good. I think I might go swim. Wanna come?” she asked, hoping maybe that if they could go out in the water together, maybe she could say… something to make things more like they were before.”
Without warning, a splash of water hit Jensen’s back as Jared launched a water balloon at him. Y/N laughed as Jensen’s face went from shock, then fell into revenge mode as he slowly turned and glared his best friend with narrow, accusing eyes.
“Sorry, Trix. Gonna take a rain check. I got some business to attend to first,” he muttered before taking off through the sand after Jared.
She watched him chase Jared through the cove, as they threw water balloons at each other, and riled up half of the other partygoers to do the same. Realizing she was still carrying Robbie’s guitar, Y/N ventured over towards the area designated for the food and found a safe place for it.
“You gonna play something for us tonight?” Robbie asked and approaching her with a full plate of food, then motioning towards the guitar with his chin.
Y/N shook her head. “Nah, I don’t think so. I didn’t mean to bring it off the boat, it just sorta--”
“Followed you?”
“Yeah, kinda. Since I lost mine…”
“You feel lost. That I get.”
She nodded. “You should play something though, you know I get all tingly when you do,” she teased, trying to steer the conversation away from a place she didn’t want it to go.
“We’ll see.... maybe if you play, I’ll play.”
Y/N rolled her eyes. “Alright, Robbie. Maybe. Come find me after a swim and a few drinks. I may be more pliable then.” She patted him on the shoulder and made her way towards the water.
“Don’t think I won’t, Y/N! I’m not above that!” he called after her, before taking a bite of the food on his plate and walking towards one of the long tables.
The view of the sunset from the cove was the best they could have hoped for. The colors were painted across the clouds in hues of pinks and purples, with a splash of orange for contrast. The moon, just about at full, already hung low in the east, waiting its turn to rise and join the celebration. After an afternoon of swimming, games, drinking, and laughs, Jared’s friends all migrated towards the newly lit bonfire while they waited for the unveiling of the pig from the pig roast.
The air was beginning to develop a chill, but Y/N just assumed it was because she was still in a wet bathing suit without her pull over or dry shorts. She snuck back to the boat and quickly changed into her extra clothes, and relished in how it instantly warmed her skin. In no time at all, she was back out on the beach of the cove and headed to rejoin everyone around the bonfire.
Everyone was already sat, forming a tight circle around the pit of flames. She looked for Jensen and saw him sitting snugly between Bri and Jared, talking and laughing. Directly across from him, she saw Robbie sitting there, with the last open space beside him. Somehow, she knew that was not by chance.
“This seat is taken?” she asked as she stepped over the makeshift log seat and then sat beside Robbie.
“Saved it just for you, buttercup,” he winked. “Have fun today?”
“I did,” she smiled, and then looked across the flames at Jensen.
He saw her, too. The corner of his mouth pulled into a smirk as gave her a little wave. She returned it in a similar fashion. She hadn’t seen much of him throughout the day, and knew it was only because he was enjoying the day off with his group of friends, and not because of any lingering awkwardness between them; she hoped.
“Did you have enough from the tiki bar that I could maybe convince you to sing something?” he wiggled his eyebrows excitedly, making her laugh.
“You first, Robert.”
“That wasn’t a no,” he chuckled, “so, I’m happy.”
The chatter around fire came to a lull as the sound of Robbie’s guitar replaced it. He was just strumming, but everyone knew that it wouldn’t just be that for long.
“Whatcha wanna hear?” he leaned over and asked Y/N while continuing to strum.
“Surprise me.”
Robbie found a rhythm he was happy with and slipped into the melody for The Rest. He played and sang, and encouraged some of the others to jump in on the song with him. Y/N was swaying along and enjoying the music, but every so often would look up and catch Jensen’s eye. She felt a million miles away from him, and as she watched him singing along with Robbie and the others, all she wanted to do was be near him.
Her mind began to drift as Robbie continued to play. Y/N thought about the night of their date, and how it was to be there with him, under the stars and sitting so close. She loved how delicately he kissed her, then showed up the next day just to take her to the airport.
‘You’re in love with him… just stop fighting it,’ she thought, chastising herself. ‘Sometimes you gotta just take the leap and--”
The claps and whistles of applause pulled her back and she followed suit. When she turned to look at Rob, he was watching her expectantly, holding out the guitar.
“Your turn,” he smiled impishly. “Deals a deal.”
“Yeesss! Y/N, it’s your turn!” Bri called out from over the flames. Following her, more encouragement from the party goers, including Jared and Gen, were egging her on. She gazed around the circle, suddenly nervous and unsure if she would be able to make her fingers work to do it.
When her gaze reached Jensen, she realized he was the only one not making any noise or gestures. He simply sat, leaning his forearms against his thighs, his hands clasped around a beer, hanging between his knees and his sights set firmly on Y/N. His mouth was relaxed and soft, his lips slightly parted as he watched her. His green eyes were narrowed intently on her as she cradled the guitar against her chest, before getting it in the proper position.
Y/N’s throat was suddenly very dry. Without asking, she reached down and pulled a swig from Robbie’s beer and apologized in a silent expression. He gave her a quick wink and nudged her with his elbow.
Now she leaned into him. “Whatcha wanna hear?” she asked.
“Sing something that means something to you,” he replied quietly, then casually let his line of sight linger towards Jensen before leaning back and settling in for her song.
Y/N’s fingers found the frets and pressed down on the strings. With her other hand, she began to strum and after a few chords, she cast her gaze down to the guitar and began singing softly, the rest of the group quieting down as the slower melody started to play. She thought about what the song meant to her, what it had been to her, and how she can use it now, to try and speak to Jensen.
“I got chills They’re multiplying And I’m losing control ‘Cause the power you’re supplying...”
‘It’s electrifying...’ Jensen sang softly, almost in a whisper but loud enough for Y/N to hear him.
Her head snapped up at the sound of his voice, her gaze instantly finding, and holding his across the fire. She paused for a moment to take a breath, her hand hovering closely over the strings. A twitch of the corner of Jensen’s mouth was all she needed to keep playing after having missed the next few beats in the song.
The song continued, but more as a conversation between them than a tune being played for the entertainment of the crowd.
“You better shape up ‘Cause I need a man And my heart is set on you
You better shape up You better understand To my heart I must be true”
‘Nothing left for me to do…’ Jensen sang with her. She continued on, as if everything in the song was what she had been wanting to say. But much like her old man, Y/N wasn’t great with verbalizing what she wanted, or how she felt. So, once again, she turned to music to do it for her.
When Y/N got to the chorus, he sang with her, softly, matching the tone and cadence of the melody.
“I better shape up, ‘cause you need a man…” Jensen took over for her, singing louder than he had been up to this point, making the next couple of verses everything he needed to say, and what she needed to hear.
“Yes I’m sure down deep inside…”
The last line of the verse and both of them looked at each other. They had been watching one another throughout the entirety of the song, but with this one line, it was saying everything they were both feeling but too scared to admit. The feelings that those lyrics left her with wasn’t just the rush of love she had for him, but the certainty with which she felt them. Whatever fear had been holding her back was gone and she knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that Jensen was the only one she would ever really want.
They went through the chorus two more times, the intensity and strength of her playing and their singing growing, before it faded out.
“Oh yes indeed,” Y/N sang the last line, knowing exactly where she stood now.
There was a beat where it got very quiet, but Bri and Robbie changed that quickly with their rousing applause and cat-call whistles. Y/N smiled humbly and nodded her head slightly before handing the guitar back to Rob. She gave Bri a rueful glance over the flames before letting her eyes drift back to Jensen, who was suddenly gone from the bonfire.

Jensen needed a minute to compose himself. From the moment he heard what song she was singing, he felt his chest tighten and his heart beat faster. That dream he had the night he met her felt prophetic now and it left him reeling. He didn’t plan on singing, but he couldn’t help it. He felt like she was speaking to him and then as it continued on, he couldn’t refrain from speaking back. When it ended, he felt so affected by the whole thing and had a build up of emotion that had been coming for a while despite his need to try and repress it.
He was on his way back to the bonfire now that he had calmed a bit when he found her off on her own. Y/N was standing near the edge of trees where the cove and the paths converged. Off in the distance, the party was in full swing; the music and noise of which faded a bit where he found her, and he was grateful for that. It was getting dark, and out here on the fringes of the party, the only light he could really see her by was that of the moon.
“Hey Trix, you alright?” he asked softly.
Y/N turned and saw him emerge from one of the wide paths. She looked up at him, and he could tell she was smiling; but it was that soft, thoughtful one she would get when she had been lost in something.
“Yeah,” she said and approached him. “I was just looking for you.”
“Here I am,” he smirked, but she didn’t smile in return. She looked slightly nervous as she fidgeted with her hands.
“Jensen… I…” she stuttered, and then stopped to draw in a deep breath. “I’m so sorry, I have been the biggest idiot.”
“What are you talking about? You’re not--”
“I am. Now, hush and let me talk. You and I, I don’t know how or why it works, but it does. I’ve been so afraid to admit how well it works, and because of that, I’ve been… I don’t even know. Scared seems ridiculous, but I guess, scared.”
She was rambling now, and as Jensen watched her pace back and forth trying to find the words she desperately grasped for, he couldn’t help but be slightly amused. He crossed his arms over his chest and continued to fall more in love as she stumbled over her words.
“You have to understand that I, trusting you--I didn’t know if I could, I mean, not that you gave me a reason not to--and then with the break-in, and all the other stuff--”
“Y/N,” he said, trying to get her attention, but she either didn’t hear him or ignored him.
“Then, that just happened, and I look up, and you’re gone, I thought for sure--”
“Y/N!” Jensen laughed, finally taking her by the shoulders and standing her square in front of him. “Stand still. Take a breath. Just say what you want to say.”
She looked up at him, and drew in a calming breath, exhaling through pursed lips. Jensen’s heart began to beat faster when he saw how her eyes were locked onto his, wistful, and dreamy. Y/N took Jensen’s hands from her shoulders, then interlaced her fingers into his and held them in front of her. She was quiet, and her eyes were fixed on the tangled knot their hands had become. She brought it to her mouth and kissed the back of his hand softly. Jensen’s stomach fluttered when he felt her lips on his skin.
“I love you, too,” she whispered, through a dry rough voice.
She released his hands slowly, gingerly placed her palms on his cheeks and guided her mouth onto his. He inhaled sharply before he kissed her back, surprised that she took the initiative. It started slow, but not hesitant; they savored each other for a few minutes with the soft, wanting, open mouth type of kiss that only two people in love could really appreciate. Jensen wanted more, needed more of her, but before he could, she retracted but stayed close, ghosting her nose over his; the sensation of which stirred the same feeling as seeing her just out of the shower did.
“Take me home, Hollywood.”
Jensen’s head snapped up, and he saw the sincerity in her eyes, pleading with him to take her away.
“You sure?”
She nodded and took his hand again. Y/N didn’t need to say anything, Jensen understood completely; she had said everything she needed to while they sang to each other around the bonfire. No one would miss them, and as much as he loved Jared, he wanted and had waited for Y/N for a long time. Jared would understand why he left.
Jensen kissed her again, and when she returned it with fervor, he knew it was time to go. He took her hand and playfully pulled her down the path that led away from the party. When they emerged onto the parking lot, the valets were already in place ready to assist him.
“I need a car, please,” Jensen asked with a polite smile, then turned slightly looking back at Y/N who was nearly attached to his side. “And quickly… if you could.”
Within minutes, the attendant had one of the rentals ready to go and Jensen was opening the passenger door for Y/N. Jensen backed out of the lot and headed towards the exit. It wouldn’t take long to get back to his place, but part of him just wanted to find the nearest motel. Deciding home was better, Jensen pointed the car in that direction and cruised down the main drag. With very few cars out at that time of night, they had the road to themselves.
A string of traffic lights sat between them and the house. The atmosphere of the car was tense, both Jensen and Y/N could feel the growing impatience between them. When they hit the first red light, Jensen threw the car in park and leaned over to her. His hand quickly tangled up in the hair at the back of her neck and pulled her needily towards him.
His mouth greeted hers, open and hungry, and for sixty seconds the light sat red, he devoured as much of her as he could. When it turned green, they regretfully parted until the next red light. He couldn’t get enough, no matter how many times he stopped to kiss her on the ride home. By the time he was pulling into the driveway, her lips were red and swollen from his relentless assault, but she immediately moved over to kiss him again once he turned off the ignition.
They parted long enough to make it to the stoop. The front door fell open as Jensen and Y/N stumbled in, their mouths locked together the second the key turned the knob. Jensen made sure it was closed and reset the deadbolt. As he did, she stepped back from him, the moonlight coming through the skylights in the foyer highlighting her skin as she slowly pulled her shirt up and over her head and let it fall to the floor.
Jensen stood motionless, unable to move towards her. Her (y/c) eyes locked onto his, and he felt himself tremble as she took her time unbuttoning the jean shorts, allowing them to join her gray pull over on the rug. Left in only her lacy bra and underwear, she moved towards him. He ran his fingers up the length of her arm, then raised both his arms in the air, as she pulled his thin cotton thermal top off over his head.
“Whoa, wait,” he gasped, pulling away from her and leaving a breath of space. “Are you sure? I mean, really sure?”
“Yes…. I am more than sure,” she purred and bit her lower lip as she ran a finger at the waist of his shorts.
She kissed him again, both of their breathing short and labored huffs through noses as their mouths occupied the other. He stopped it again before she could free him of more of his clothes, pressing his forehead against hers trying to catch his breath.
“Last time…”
“That was a long time ago, Jay,” she pleaded and went in to kiss him again.
“I don’t want to lose you. It's okay if you wanna stop and wait—”
“You won’t. I’m not going anywhere, except upstairs… with you. I don’t want to wait anymore.”
Jensen bit his lower lip, using every ounce of his will power to not tear her bra off there in the foyer. “We can stop, Y/N. I don’t wanna push you.”
“No, you’re not. I told you to take me home. I want you, Jay. I want you to take me upstairs and do unspeakable things to me. I’m so fucking tired of being cautious with you. It's just… I was so damn reckless for so long, that when you came along…” she hesitated to continue, afraid to derail what was happening.
“Say it… when I came along, what?” he rasped, and nipped at her lips, which she kissed back immediately before he pulled back again. “Tell me.”
“I needed to be cautious with you because the stakes were so high. I knew from that first night on the beach that if I wasn’t careful, I would fall right into you. Hopelessly so. So I played it safe until I knew for sure that I wouldn’t lose. I’m sure now. I put everything on snake eyes, baby,” she chuckled and pressed her nails into the nape of his neck, drawing his body as physically close to her as she possibly could.
Jensen let her. They were nearly fused together now, her lips trailing soft, wanting kisses across his neck up to his ear. He shuddered when she kissed him there and felt his legs go weaker when her delicate breath fell against his ear.
“What’s the payout?” he whispered, unable to get his voice louder than that while under the spell of her touch.
Y/N pressed her lips to his earlobe and took it in her mouth, grazing her teeth along it as she whispered, “Everything.”
Jensen exhaled heavily, he knew that her phrasing was in good fun, but he also knew how vast the weight of her words were. Trusting wasn’t easy for her, and falling in love, after what she had been through, near impossible. Yet, here they were, together with nothing standing between them but their own insecurities. Pushing all of those aside, Jensen took her hand tightly into his, and lead her towards the stairs.
He pushed open the bedroom door and motioned for her to go first. She was barely a few steps in before she turned and found him in the barely illuminated room. He leaned over and turned on the bedside lamp.
“No, leave it off,” she breathed. He could hear the trembling in her voice, but slowly shook his head.
“No,” he rasped and took her chin between his fingers. “I want to see you.”
Jensen bent down and kissed her neck before reaching behind her and unclasping her bra, letting it slide from her body to the floor. A small whimper escaped her lips as his hands ran lightly over the swell of her breasts, then down her stomach, coming to land at the hem of her panties.
He swallowed thickly, his fingers trembling as he breached the edge of the lace. He looked back at her, and when he saw the want in her eyes, he knew it was really happening. Jensen’s tongue ran over his bottom lip before he bent down and kissed her again. She reached for his shorts, and this time made quick work of getting them off.
Jensen walked her back towards the bed, never breaking his gaze from hers. She collided with the mattress and fell onto it, causing her to giggle. Y/N climbed backward onto the bed, propping herself up on her elbows and watching him with a lustful need. Hovering over her, he kissed her breasts softly, then ran his tongue lightly over her nipples. The lightest graze of his teeth against the rigid nub caused an involuntary shiver to race down her flesh. She felt him grin against her, which only encouraged her to rake her fingers through his hair.
His mouth continued to work her over, eventually trailing down to her underwear. This time when he toyed with the hem, it was to pull them down, slowly and holding her gaze as he did so. When they were tossed aside, he looked to her one last time to be certain she wanted this. As if reading his thoughts, she smiled and bit her lower lip seductively, nodding with the slightest motion, and watching him with eyes begging him to touch her.
Jensen kissed the inside of her thigh as he let his hand brush against the hood of her sex. Y/N gasped, sucking air through her teeth and exhaling heavily at the sensation. Leaving his hand there, he continued moving back up her body and as his fingers slipped into her folds, his mouth found her neck and left a trail of biting, needy kisses up towards her ear.
“You are so fucking beautiful,” he whispered, then found her mouth and kissed her again. “I have wanted you from the minute I saw you.”
The way he rasped in her ear, and the more his fingers traced the lines and ridges of her sex, teasing her clit, caused her to writhe beneath him.
“Please,” she mewed, running her hands across his back trying to pull him closer to her.
“Please what?” he asked with a heavy breath before plunging back to her neck and pushing his fingers down towards her entrance, now taunting her there.
Her hands ran down to the edge of his boxers and desperately tried to push them down. The more he touched her, the more she needed to feel him inside her, and the months of waiting and making excuses to wait had grown old. She wanted him. Now.
Y/N opened her eyes and caught his gaze. Her eyes were narrowed and full of lust, her lips still swollen and quivering. “I need you, now…”
The way she spoke to, or rather commanded him, Jensen couldn’t wait either. What she said, the way she said it, it flipped a switch in him and he needed to end the teasing. He quickly stood from the bed and pushed the boxers off himself. Before climbing back beside her, he stopped and ran his tongue up through her slit, causing her to gasp and her hands to claw at the comforter. Her reaction made his cock twitch against her leg. She sat up on her elbows and took him in, finally seeing all of him for the first time.
Jensen climbed on top of her and positioned himself between her thighs. Y/N’s head was spinning and as Jensen’s lips fell to her again, she felt his dick slide between her legs as the tip brushed against her clit. Slowly, he slipped up inside her, just a little at first, but enough to raise a growl from the deepest parts of his chest.
“Jesus,” she whispered into his neck and began to feel drunk just on the sensation and scent of his skin. The further he moved up inside her, she arched her back into him, exposing more of her neck to his mouth. Jensen took full advantage and as he gave one last, slow push, filling her completely, he bit down on her neck as she breathed his name. “Fuuuuck.. Jay…”
His hips were swaying with a tempered, methodical movement, but with each pass, Y/N dug her nails in deeper to his back. The sensation of him inside her was euphoric, coupled with the way he was continuing to kiss her neck, and the feeling of his warm breath on her skin, she briefly wondered if it was possible to faint from really good sex; but this wasn’t just good sex, and she knew it. This was intimate and meaningful; that’s what made it feel so incredibly different.
Jensen lifted his head and kissed her jawline, finding her mouth again as his hips began to move faster. She drew her legs up and around his waist, giving him a better angle to slide into. His mouth fell slightly open, his eyes squeezing shut as he got lost in the moment. Jensen’s breaths became shorter, more labored, the faster he moved. The friction against Y/N’s clit and the speed at which he moved pushed her nearly to the edge. Her hands shot out to the comforter again, trying to hold on as he became nearly relentless.
He grabbed her wrists with his hands, moving them up and pinning them down above her head.
“Fuck… fu---” he couldn’t keep it together much longer.
“God, Jay… I’m…” Y/N whined sharply, and just as her climax hit, Jensen took her breast in his mouth and swirled his tongue around the nipple. He could feel her flutter around him as his cock swelled and neared his own orgasm.
He didn’t want it to end, so he slowed down just as her legs released from the grip they had on him and fell back to the bed in exhausted relief. Jensen chuckled softly, still swaying his hips into her, knowing he wouldn’t be able to hold it off; the mere sight of her post-climax was enough to bring his on. He brushed the hair from her face and kissed her lips gently. They held each other’s gaze for a moment before she ran her fingernails up along the back of his neck, her nerve endings still on fire from the release she just experienced.
“I love you,” she whispered, then pressed her lips to the ridge of his collarbone.
That one, soft kiss was what finally pushed him over the edge. Jensen felt his climax come in a head rush like he’d never had before. He clung to her for dear life; his head buried in the crook of her neck, his body trembling with contentment as he spilled inside her, and lavished her neck and shoulders with longing, and loving kisses.
When he was spent, he went to roll off her, but she held him there.
“Don’t, I like how you feel against me,” she purred and continued running her fingertips up and down his arms lightly.
“I’m not going anywhere. You’re stuck with me now,” Jensen teased.
He did finally move off of her and stood from the bed. He reached a hand down, and helped her up, but didn’t let go of her once she was. Running his fingers through her hair, he studied her closely before kissing her once more. Releasing her just for a moment, Jensen pulled back the covers of the bed and motioned with his expression for her to get in.
She was bewitching in the way she smiled at him as she pulled him down on the bed. Jensen was on his back as Y/N hovered over him and he tucked the hair behind her ear.
“I love you, Trix,” he said in a broken whisper, so incredibly enamored with the woman who gazed down at him. Jensen thought his life couldn’t get much better than it was right then and there.

(Film three. After “pirates medley”. The hook sisters have just run into an alleyway near the marketplace)
Harriet: ya shouldna done kiddo
Cj: why not.
Harriet: because it wasn’t a good move
Cj: you might like men drooling all over you but I hate it.
Harriet: you agreed to it.
Cj: I didn’t think they’d try that. So I’d apprecrie you dispensing with the victim blaming if you please.
Harriet: yeah yeah whatever. Lookee o’er there
Cj: aw FUCK!
(They’ve just spotted chadeficent and Ursula some ways away)
Harriet: SEA WITCH!
Ursula: oh god. (Fake smile) Harriet! To what do I owe the
(Cj shoots her in the stomach with a blunderbuss)
The sisters: where is he.
(Ursula straightens up and the bullet flies out of her stomach hitting some poor sap in the head)
Chadeficent: that was Balthazar yes?
The other three: who the hell cares?
Harriet: where is my brother?
Ursula: hmmmmm. Dunno don’t care. That work for you?
(Harriet lunges are the sea witch but Cj holds her back. While this is happening Hadie poofs back in slightly singed and very pissed off)
Hadie: for the record Rodan. I don’t appreciate being sent to Dark Mountain. Chernabog may be insultingly attractive but he’s far too fatherly for my tastes.
Cj: shove off spawn. There’s more important matters at hand
(Hadie chuckles sinisterly. Then force chokes the sisters)
Hadie: oh look at that. Fragile necks and bravado are such an inexplicable combination. And as you will see very soon. Deadly
Harriet: he.. he he mi...dea.
Cj: he...gone
Hadie: what? What’re you talking about?
Chadeficent: oh I think you know
(Hadie’s eyes glow bright grey. He drops the sisters, takes out a silver knife and throws it at Ursula. It slashes her cheek)
Hadie: ever heard of phlegathon tempered steel? It cuts you. Then heals you. But keeps you in burning unbearable pain. Until such time the wielder chooses to release you from it.
(Ursula’s cheek is starting to burn. Steam is curling from the edges of the cut)
Ursula: I was exiled from Atlantica. Whatever petty wound you deal me is of no consequence.
Hadie: yeah but (he sighs) cut you enough and it burns away your very being. So. What’ll it be bitch?
(Ursula growls in irritation and disappears in a torrent of water)
Hadie: now that that’s over oh cripes they’re gone.
(Chadeficent and the girls have left the scene. At the Jolly Roger Hook is waiting on deck)
Hook: GIRLS! What the hell have you been doing. Dukes is dead. And the men say you killed him Cj. If you keep doing this you’ll never land a husband.
Cj: aye. And what of it father?
Harriet: oh god not now.
Cj: yes now. Our brother has been missing for a year now and may as well be dead and all he cares about is his disgusting heterosexual misogynistic bastards of a crew
Harriet (coughing): code red. Code red
Hook: what’re you saying Cj?
Cj: what d’you think I’m saying dad?
Hook: it sounds as though you’re thinking to much like your freak of a brother
Harriet: Harry was bisexual pops
Hook: like I said. A freak. Men are with women. Women are with men. It’s the law of the world. And I expect my children abide by that
Cj: yes and when they don’t you cast them out and they need to take refuge somewhere else. Say a restaurant run by a squid
Hook: if you have something to say then say it.
Cj: ok. I like girls. Always have. Always will. And you cannae change it or me
(Starkey hobbles outside with a tea set. Sees the family feud. Starts to make his way back inside)
Hook: STARKEY! Did you know about Cj’s affliction
Cj: oh here we go
Starkey (diplomatically): uhhhh. I believe that. She. Wanted
Cj: it’s ok uncle Starkey. I told him last year. Considering he was the one that raised me while you were brainswashing Harriet into being Captain Hook 2.0 and Harry was fuck knows were trying to get Tick Tock to chomp his hand off in a vain attempt to get your approval!!!!
Hook: in time this will pass and you’ll be just like your sister
Cj (scoffing): of course. Be like Harriet. The pretty one. The smart one. The obedient one.
Harriet (for once very sheepish): Ceej. Could ya please lemme outta this?
Cj: no. He’s always wanted me to be like you. But guess what. I’m never gonna be who you want me to be
(This is when “sit still look pretty” happens. After the song Cj storms off)
Hook: and do you have any oddities you’d like to share Harriet? Because if so nows the time
Harriet: yes. As a matter of fact I do. For the past seven years I’ve been in uh heh “cahoots” with Gaston junior.
Hook: like the freak and the pansy
Harriet: sort of. Except theirs was more emotional. Ours is. Purely on the physical side. And yes. I’m the boss.
(Hook goes puce)
Harriet: uncle Starkey. I’ll be back presently
(She runs after her sister)
Hook: take me back to my quarters Starkey
Starkey: of course sir.
(He wheels the captain back in side. Harriet catches up with Cj. She finds her in an alleyway surrounded by the felled bodies of ten dogs and one cat)
Harriet: what the hell did you do.
Cj: the one thing I ever got from him, that wasn’t a hand me down from you or Har, was this.
(She holds up a whistle)
Harriet: wow
Cj: yep. Turns out it’s a dog whistle. Which pretty succinctly explains how the bastards could hear it all the way across Neverland when Jane found the treasure
Harriet: and the morbidly obese demon on four legs?
Cj: Tremaine’s moggy
Harriet: right. What you did was incredibly brave you know.
Cj: I don’t like animals.
Harriet: I meant what happened at home just now
Cj: I know. Like I said. I don’t like animals.
(At the core fours old apartment chadeficent has just arrived. Only to see Jafar watching tv)
Chadeficent: hello worthless. Miss me?
Jafar: who...?
Chadeficent (Maleficent’s voice): this better?
Jafar (exasperated): you couldn’t have taken control of a pretty one?
Chadeficent (Chad’s voice): fuck off you crypt keeper
(Jafar looks taken aback)
Chadeficent: bugs are to be worked out
Jafar: what is it?
Chadeficent: spawn of Cinderella
Jafar: you couldn’t have got the ash girl herself?
Chadeficent: too strong willed (Chad’s indignant voice) hey! (Maleficent’s voice) SILENCE! (Both voices) I am creating a cult. To destroy our children. Ursula is aboard. What say you?
(The next morning. At Evie’s palce)
Mal:...and Ben found them this morning passed out on the couch with like eight tubs of deluxe rocky road ice scattered at round.
Jay: deluxe?
Mal: chocolate marshmallow ice cream instead of chocolate ice cream
Jay (hopefully): Christmas list?
Mal (generating a tin with magic): why wait?
Jay: ooh yay!
Evie: AH! No. Not yet
Jay: awww. I’ve been here for an hour
Mal: let the man eat sis. It’s the least you can do since you are stabbing him with pins when you could just use 🎶🎶magic🎶. By the way. Your hair remarkably black today
Evie (snarling): get outta workshop
(Mal leaves cackling. She goes to the kitchen where Carlos is giving a plate the thousand yard stare)
Mal: hey kiddo. What’s up?
Carlos (softly with a lot of feeling): the cake...it’s gone. An entire macadamia nut chocolate sponge cake. Gone. How? There was enough for fifty people to have two slices each. And it’s all gone. How can it all be gone?
(The twins and Gil come racing pass the room screeching at the top of their lungs with food all around their mouths)
Mal (aside to Carlos): I think I know. (Normal volume). Gil! Could you bring the kids in here please?
(Gil troops back to the kitchen with the twins trailing behind. All three look terrified. Carlos and Mal lift the twins up onto the counter)
Mal (“mom” voice in full effect): now boys. Did you ask your papa to get the cake from the fridge?
Twins: uhhhh...
Mal: it’s ok. I’m not mad. I just wanna. If it was you then that’s ok. If it was Dude then we need to get him to a veterinarian.
Carlos: WHAT?!?!
Mal: oh shit. Sorry honey.
Carlos: listen to me you rotten little————(the twins look at him with the epitome of puppy eyed innocence) 🎶dad. Where are you. You’re good with this type of stuff🎶
Mal: paperwork
Carlos: fuck
Gil: it was us. Squeaky wanted a snack and I couldn’t find anything in the fridge but the cake. We only meant to share a corner but Celia oh crap
Mal: 🎶oh Celia🎶
(The girl melts out from the shadows clutching her stomach)
Mal: did you help Gil and the twins eat the entirety of Jane’s birthday cake?
Celia: if I says yes what would you do.
Mal: give you an antacid and advise you to take it easy with the party food.
Celia: then yes. I helped.
Mal: come on then.
(They head to the bathroom. But Mal’s phone starts ringing)
Mal: it’s Ben. Do you know how to get to the bathroom?
Celia: Dizzy sent me a schematic last night
Mal: good. That’s good. If evo finds out I will plead the fifth. You do know that don’t you?
Celia: wouldn’t expect anything less. See ya
(She runs off)
Mal (answering her cell phone): hello your majesty. Any idea on your eta or should I send your apologies to Jane?
Ben: I wish I was close to being done. But there are so many papers to get through and there’s no use in denying it. People are terrified at what ever killed the guards.
Mal: I could come and help you?
Ben: no. Definitely not. Go have fun. Do the routine.
Mal: but you’ll miss it. Though a private rendition for your eyes only could also be very interes-
Cogsworth: ahem hello my lady
Mal (trying not to laugh): sorry Carlton.
Cogsworth: that’s quite alright dear. I’ll just uh go ahem away
(He leaves and bal bursts into laughter)
Mal: oh that was oh god that
Ben: I I’m so sorry
Mal: don’t be. Just sorted a domestic so a I needed a laugh
(As they’re talking Mal’s walking outside)
Mal: what on the office menu today
Ben: chargrilled Damon foie gras and quinoa
Mal: what no pizza?
Ben: fraid not
Mal: I can always zap you some sausage rolls and mac and cheese cupcakes from the party
Ben: please and thank you?
Mal: and the new cake
Ben: Celia?
Mal: along with your brother and nephews. Carlos was not happy
Ben: of course.
Mal: hey, was chad supposed to meet us at Evie’s?
Ben: I don’t think so. Is he there?
Mal: yeah. Looking like the shalka Doctor.
Ben: oh.
Mal: I’ll go see what he wants
Ben: be careful. Love ya
Mal: always am. Love you too.
(She hangs up)
Mal: hey chad. Whatcha doing
(Chadeficent turns to look at her. Their eyes glow black. And Mal enacts the safety protocols on the house keeping everyone else inside and safe)
Mal: what did you do?
Chadeficent (Maleficent’s voice): oh it’s not chad. Hello my sweet
Mal (breathing heavily): Maleficent?
Chadeficent: mhmm. Now give me my sceptre
Mal: what did you do to him?
Chadeficent: he is simply a mindless hormone driven teenage boy
Mal: yeah, I know, he’s an dickhead. Nobody likes him. At all
Chadeficent (Chad’s voice, very, very hurt): they don’t?
Mal: yeah. You’re insufferable.
Chadeficent (Maleficent’s voice): ENOUGH! Give me the sceptre
Mal: you stole the wand didn’t you. And the staff and the mirror. So why do you need the sceptre.
Chadeficent: I want everything of importance (Chad’s voice) I wanna be king (Maleficent’s voice) I want my daughter back
Mal: I’m not your daughter. And chad you hate magic. Why would you use it to be king?
Chadeficent (Chad’s voice): I uh I dunno (Maleficent’s voice) he was easily bought with a butter finger and empty promises I have absolutely no intention on fulfilling. Now. The sceptre.
Mal (mind working a mile a minute): h how, how about a story. And I can make you a cup of tea yeah? Or coffeee?
Chadeficent (Chad’s voice): ooh beer (Maleficent’s voice) very well. But be quick about it
Mal: ok. Ok um
(She turns to the drinks table. This is when “she’s so gone” happens. After which Chadeficent picks her up from the splintered table by the neck)
Mal: why...are..you...doing...this?
Chadeficent (Chad’s voice): you don’t deserve this. None of it. You belong on that slag heap. You deserve to rot. To be forgotten. I want you all dead. Don’t you see? You can’t be queen. It’s not right. Audrey should be queen. And I should be king
Mal: but...Ben
Chadeficent (still Chad’s voice): ALL OF YOU WILL DIE. YOU. THE MAGIC PEOPLE THE RUNT THE CHICKS THE TRAIOR THE FREAK OF A DWARF. ALL OF YOU. DEAD (Maleficent’s voice) as for me. I want to break you. For you to see how useless you truly are without me.
Mal (turning purple in the face now): get...bent
(Chadeficent drops her and pulls out the wand)
Chadeficent (Chad’s voice): there’s never been an ugly bitch who’s been queen. Looks are everything. Bibbidi bobbidi boo
(Mal is washed is black light which solidified into a black cloak. The houses doors are blasted off their hinges and jay stands there completely gold and absolutely buzzing with power. Chadeficent cackles as they disappear in black smoke. Jay and the others rush to Mal’s side)
Carlos: oh my god! Mom are you ok?
Mal (voice hoarse thin and cracked): yes ahem yes ye yeah. What the hells wrong with my voice
(Evie takes the hood off of Mal and cackles)
Evie: HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! OH MY GOD! YOU LOOK LIKE
Jay (unimpressed with her behaviour): your mother. When she gave the apple to Doug’s aunt
(Evie stops cackling)
Carlos: what happened
Mal: Chad’s possessed by Maleficent. He wants to kill us all and be king
Carlos: and goat lady?
Mal: wants to break me
Evie: so what do we do
Celia: isn’t it obvious? Hades. Your father.
Evie: he is not
Celia: Mal was right and you know it. So stop pissing about and help me get your sister inside the house so she can get some proper clothes on cause an old lady in a minidress is not a good look. I should know. Cruella used to come to the arcade in the warm days. It’s was horrifying. Thank you Carlos for killing her last year by the way
Carlos: much obliged Ceels.
(Mal’s phone rings again. This time Carlos is the one to answer it)
Carlos: hi yes dad. Ok brace yourself. Chad has the wand. He’s possessed by Maleficent. He wants us all dead. Barricade yourself in your office. Emergency protocols. All that shizz. You have magic so you should be fine. We’re gonna stop them. It’s what we do. Us too (he ends the call) that’s dad sorted. Now how do we fix mom?
Celia: go to the island. Get the ember. Come back here. Kick him in the balls until he’s exorcised
Mal: Gil. You coming with us?
Gil: I would but. My boys
Doug: I’ll stay with them. I have my exosuit. I’ll keep them safe. I promise you I will
Gil: ok
Evie: oh my god!
Doug: our kid is fine. She’s with Lonnie and Jane. You know. A badass and a light fairy.
Evie: oh thank god
Jay: so we all know what we’re doing. Action time?
All the others: action time
Squirmy: AAAAAH
Gil (panicky): what? What is it? What’s wrong
Squirmy: I want to give the pretty lady my present
(He holds up a bouquet of periwinkle blue tulips. Everyone relaxes)
Gil: Jane will love them. But it could be a good idea to keep them here. Just until we’re all back together. Yeah?
Squirmy (unhappily): yeah
Doug: c’mon boys. You can help me bake a new cake.
The twins: YAAAAAAAAY
(They run back in. Evie goes up and embraces Doug)
Evie: we’ll be back soon as possible
Doug: take however long you need. I stabbed someon in the junk last year. I can defend myself
Evie: oh I know that. It’s just that
Doug: Evie sweetie. Look at me. I’ll be fine. I promise. And if I need to reach you there’s our phones the the psychic link you set up.
Evie (voice breaking): I...
Doug (understandingly): me too. Now let’s go
(They all run back into the house except for one)
Mal: uh. Guys
Jay: oh. Right
(He runs back and carries her to the house)
Mal: watch the hip. Watch the hip
Jay: yeah yeah yeah.
Celia: so do we get the the island. The limos?
Evie: no. They’re all the the school garages until next week.
Celia: then we’re screwed?
Mal: not entirely
Jaylos and Evie: THE BIKES
Celia: what?
Mal: how I left last year
(At the cliff site. The six of them are on their bikes. Celia’s hanging on to Gil)
Carlos: go on mom
Mal (voice still croaky): noble steed proud and fair/you shall take us anywhere
(They drive over the magic bridge to the island. Back in Auradon Chadeficent is making their way to Jane’s birthday party)
Chadeficent (Maleficent’s voice): are you sure this shall work? (Chad’s voice) it had better. They all deserve it for hating me

“are you finishing that or…?” “Do it. I dare you.” But together in the same prompt. >:3
This took me so long to write because I kept having to stand up and walk away toward the end. I’m weak for fluff and shit but I almost never write it.
Anyway, content warning for blood drinking at the very beginning (the vampire’s here for two seconds) and sort of amnesia.
Tag list and the scene are under the cut!

“That’s not what I asked.”
“I know what you asked and I’ll tell you again.” Jess sucks on the the tube of a bloodbag like a bendy straw. “He works Tuesday through Saturday, noon to six.”
I grind my teeth but don’t press it. If they don’t want to help, I’m not gonna change that by force. They’re like Sawyer that way. They are Sawyer that way.
“You’ll have to find him yourself.” They raise an eyebrow and lean back on their stool. “Or, you know. Ask the Cube-slash-Sawyer where he is.”
“I’m not doing that,” I say flatly. I huff at their shrug and hop off my own seat. I’ll be able to find him myself.
“Nine tonight, don’t be late!” they call out behind me. “And you’ll have to talk to them eventually!”
I wave my coffee cup at them vaguely without looking back. It’ll be fine. I’ll talk to them, I just… you know. I need to talk to Dominic, remind myself he didn’t actually die.
I push out of the Lounge and look into the In-Between from the entryway’s floor to ceiling windows. It’s definitely a view. It tickles something in the back of my head to look at from this vantage, from inside the Cube.
I shake my head and go on through the next door into the Cube itself. I’ll run into someone who knows where he is eventually. Hopefully. If I’m not too terribly unlucky.
He might be able to help me fill in these gaps in my memory. It all kinda feels like a dream now that I’m not just astral projecting or whatever. Fuzzy and not quite together enough to remember all the way. My memories of the Vampire have solidified after hanging around them a few days, hopefully I’ll get the rest of them cleared up.
There are some things…
Yeah, I need to talk to Dominic.
All of the doors in this area are empty. They don’t connect to a specific universe, at least. The signs over them all read vacant. Knowing what I know about the different universes I’m not so sure. There’s someone out there.
V was there before Breaking Furnace, after all. I haven’t brought it up to them yet, but it makes sense! There have to be others! V was too focused on Furnace to also have been running other universes.
Ugh, it doesn’t matter. I’m not looking for V. If I keep thinking about them, the Cube’ll just take me to their door instead of to Dominic.
I really missed this place. I can’t believe I was ever okay with leaving. With staying away when I could be somewhere that listens. Sometimes it can have a weird sense of humor, but it usually isn’t mean.
Last time I saw Dominic—really saw him—was at the river. Cold, hurt, and so goddamn loyal he dragged Gamzee under at the cost of his own life. I hope I gave him a piece of my mind about that when I was ghosting around. I just don’t remember.
I sigh and down a few gulps of coffee. Jess must have made this bottomless—I’m sure I’ve poured at least two mugs full down my throat at this point.
Maybe I’ll just do it again, even if it turns out I did. After I see him and my bones stop vibrating. After I know how much of what I remember was real* and how much was just wishful thinking. Before I get to the other person I really do need to get around to talking to.
I’ll do that eventually. I have to stop jumping up the second they need me, though. They’re a big kid—they’re in college now and everything—they’ll be fine without me for a few more days.
Or not if I don’t stop thinking about them like a dumbass.
I lift a hand and feel the edges of the Cube’s consciousness. It’s not that hard, with how close to being Collective I am. I figure, maybe, if it won’t just tune into me and take me where I want to go I can just, you know. Ask it to take me there? Maybe?
If I can wave a hand and make tables and shit, I don’t see why I shouldn’t be able to do this.
It doesn’t always feel the same. It depends on what Sawyer’s brain is doing and how they are, I guess. Today, it’s kind of like sticking my hand into a whirlpool of, like. Static. And glass.
That’s worrisome. Tomorrow, I swear I’ll go talk to them tomorrow.
I flex my fingers and dig into the fabric of thought there. I’m still not sure if Sawyer knows when I do this kind of thing. Whether it’s really the capricious Cube that answers this kind of request or if it’s them.
I guess this is sort of what Jess wanted me to do in the first place.
Still, the question of where to go buzzes over my fingers and into the world around me. It sits there, the whirlpool jagged and grating on my own mind, while I walk on. I don’t get an answer, exactly, but I do see the next turn up ahead change from a left turn to a right turn.
It’s probably the best I’m going to get. I yank my hand back and motherfucker, I hate the tingling it leaves. My entire hand has that shitty almost-numb buzz, enough that I just grimace and tip my head back to chug my drink until I round the corner.
I almost choke and stop dead. I never actually thought about. What I was gonna say when I found Dominic.
He hasn’t even seen me yet, though Jay’s gaze locks on me from the other end of the sizeable hallway. Their smile turns wry. They tilt their head only slightly, then return their attention to Dominic.
I don’t know what they say. I don’t need to know. He freezes on the spot and jerks his head up in response, whatever it is.
After a long beat of mutual wide-eyed staring, he grins and says something—he’s still too far away to really hear—and starts toward me.
At a fucking run.
“Coming in!” he crows about halfway to me and holy shit he isn’t—
It would be really funny if I could complete the meme, but I kinda blank out for a second. Between the realization of what this idiot is doing and the second I have to catch him, I must have dropped the coffee because of course I did.
I stumble back because, okay, Nick’s kind of a big guy. His momentum, legs locked around my middle, knocks the breath from my lungs, the carefree laughter I’ve never heard from him keeps my throat a little choked up.
So maybe it’s understandable that my first nonsensical thought is that he might actually be trying to suffocate me when he kisses me. It shorts something out in my head. He wisely jerks back when my legs give out and I end up flat on my back.
With Dominic sitting on my chest and smiling at me like he didn’t just, like, try to kill me or something, his face—his eyes—maybe six inches from mine.
“That answers that question,” I wheeze with a thin laugh.
He cocks his head and sits back. “What question?”
“How’s that memory coming?”
Dominic jolts—meaning, he squeezes the air out of my lungs again—and twists to look at Jay, who stands over us just behind him. They aren’t looking at him, though. Their level gaze sits on me. So does their phone camera.
“Better than it was.” I huff and try to sit up. Without any prompting, Dominic shuffles back just enough that I can lever myself upright. He stays in my lap, though, which is a little bit of a comfort. “I think they just need, uh, reinforcement.”
Something sparks—literally—in their eyes. They don’t comment, though. In fact, they pocket their phone and start back the way they came with a shrug. “I doubt you’ll find many complaints on that front.”
They wink before they actually turn around. I’d throw something at them if I weren’t. You know. On the ground and also finally face to face with the boy.
And, of the many brilliant and witty things I could say, I land on…
“You made me drop my coffee,” I inform him blandly.
He leans bodily back and, hey! I catch sight of my mug, which somehow managed to land upright with just a ring of coffee that must have splashed out. I reach for it when he hooks a finger into the handle and sits back up.
The fucker doesn’t give it to me.
“What’s wrong with your memory?” he asks brightly with my caffeine held hostage.
“Brain machine broke,” I mutter. “Turns out, a slice of a person doesn’t make very reliable records.”
He blinks once, twice, then sets the cup to the side.
“It’s not a big deal,” I assure him. “I just need to, uh. Do the whole memory association thing.”
“I just—” He reaches out and seems to change his mind a couple times before he just rests his hands on my shoulders. “What all do you remember?”
I make an uncertain sound in the back of my throat. “We hung out a lot, right? And there were some flashes, of—”
I look away and he squeezes my shoulders reassuringly.
“Anyway, the short answer is not much.”
I jolt when he snorts. His head drops down against my shoulder, his hands trail down my arms in his laughter and I do not know what to think about that.
“I can’t believe you caught me!” He cackles into my shirt. “The Cube screwed up your memory and you just went with it.”
It takes a beat for me to decide that, yes, I’m probably allowed to, and cling to him, fingers dug into the back of his shirt. He still trembles in now-silent laughter.
Thank christ I was right about all this.
He straightens up suddenly and his concern even alarms me.
“Crap, I kissed you, I’m sorry.” He shifts back, and I have a feeling if I didn’t tighten my grip he would be standing up. “If I’d known, I wouldn’t have—”
“I promise, it’s fine,” I say a little too fast.
It takes a few seconds, long enough for him to make sure I’m not lying, I assume, but his worry slowly melts back into a gently smug smile. It smacks me right into a memory.
A good day. A view of the In-Between. Scars, sharing, and a shit-eating grin over a plate of stupid cucumber sandwiches. It flits through my mind in an instant, doesn’t give me time to recover before Nick rolls a leading look at my coffee.
“So, are you finishing that, or…”
I level as calm a gaze as I can at him. I want nothing more than to snatch that cup, but come on. Come on.
“Do it.” I don’t think I quite manage to keep the smile out of my voice or the laugh in my head from leaking into the air around us, but I’m not about to let that stop me. “I dare you.”
He doesn’t wait before he grabs it and downs it.
Or, he tries to. It’s a bottomless cup of black coffee, okay, and the guy has a sweet tooth. He lasts maybe five seconds before he splutters out a perfect spit take and coughs into the cup.
I mean, we’re both covered in coffee now. Does that make it any less worth it when I take the mug and take a long drink?
No, it absolutely does not.

[Mobile Friendly BL Basics Bio]
Tumblr media
Name: Jay Finch
Age: 32 (BL2/TFTBL era), 39 (BL3 era)
Height: 5'10"
Build: Lean Muscular (bl2), a bit thicker muscled in bl3 era
Sexual/Romantic Preference: Bisexual/Demi/Grayromantic
Personality: Asshole. Biggest asshole. Pretty much evil, even. He doesn’t give a shit about anyone or anything (with very, very few exceptions). He will call you names, he will be mean, he will try to kill you, or at least hurt you in some way. Also full of rage and blood lust quite often.
Other: Not any real occupation, although some will probably classify him as a bandit. He’s kind of a lazy ass. Until he picked up his Arena, that is.
Scars and Marks: Of course, his signature scar over the left eye. Snake tattoo on his neck, a sun tattoo on his right shoulder, and a bird carving (scarification) on his chest. And a burn scar on his right rib area. So far for the major ones. Various nicks, scratches, and bullet wounds, also. Later, he gains more tattoos on his right arm, from the sun down- wings, a hand holding a golden apple, a cracked ancient Greek helmet with a banner underneath that reads “Doomed Might,” a skull with fangs on the back of us hand with the word “Deimos” under it, “CHAOS” along the front of his ribs, and a mirrored pattern on his lower torso.
History: Childhood - Teen years- Jay was born on Eden-5 (because we know that one has at least one school, probably more) to the Finch family (father- Daniel Finch, Mother- Rose (Marie Carter-)Finch, and twin brother- Jared Finch). He was unstable even in childhood, but his mother was there to support him. His father and brother always saw him as a problem. At age 7, there was a house fire that he was caught in. His mother came to save him, so Jay got out mostly safe aside from the 3rd degree burn he got. His mother didn’t make it back out. Jared and their father blamed him for Rose’s death ever since. During High-school, Jay was, of course, reckless. Daniel tried getting him on some special drugs to keep him calm, but more or less made Jay feel like a zombie any time he was on them. Jay also had a counselor during his school years named Jonathan Blake, who acted more like a father for Jay than Daniel ever did. Jay may have given him a lot of shit, but still kind of cared about him. Jay got into a lot of fights, and vandalized a lot of things. At 15, he fought a kid and wouldn’t stop punching him in the head, resulting in his first (accidental) kill. So, it being deemed an technical accident, they didn’t throw him in jail yet, but would keep a close eye on him (and still try to keep him on the drugs, but he quite often skipped out on them, and yeah, they could tell and talked to him about it a lot). Jay started trying out more kills on kids that were on his shit-list, but doing them as discretely as he could to avoid getting caught. Until one day, he was out with his brother and his brother’s girlfriend (Andi) for whatever reason. Jared was going to pick up something, leaving Andi talking to Jay alone. Everything she was saying was irritating him to no end, and he ends up slitting her throat. Jared comes back out, sees what happened, and attacks his brother, snatching the knife and slashed at Jay’s face. It was then that they finally ended up locking him up. He was 18 at that point, just before graduation. Adult- A few years later, in his early-mid 20s, Hyperion was looking for some types of people that could do their dirty work. After an interview with Jay, they took him out of jail and put him into their offices until the position they got him for opened up. There, Jay met a very pretty blond man named Stephen, and that was the first time Jay ever fell for anyone. The two began to wreak havoc in their department upon all the poor nerds around them, from pranking them to terrorizing them and ripping off limbs and throwing them out the airlocks for shits and giggles. Eventually, they transferred down to the Wildlife Preserve. Jay was a torturer and handler, putting test subjects in line. But he lost Stephen somewhere, not knowing what department he was placed into. Eventually, he found him. Stephen had become one of the subjects for something called Project Quetzal. Jay and Stephen then ran away from the Preserve, and of course, since that was an important project, were hunted down. They were eventually found and surrounded. And in all that mess, Stephen was killed and Jay was left alone, having to leave the area. And Jay decided it was death to all Hyperion.
Face Claim: Gaspard Ulliel
Voice Claim: Reuben Langdon
Jay’s Aresenal
Guns: Hyperion pistol (non-elemental), corrosive pistol, corrosive combat rifle
Jay will resort to using guns for 2 reasons. One, to conserve energy and fight through hoards until he gets to the ‘big game.’ Two, if he’s really, really fed up with you and just wants you to drop dead now.
Shield: Corrosive spike shield
As you probably know, spike shields activate when hit by melee attacks. Jay won’t have it on when in a fist fight.
Melee: Knives knives knives, various sizes and shapes
Himself: Jay’s kinda almost like a berserker, I guess. The angrier he is, the stronger he is, and the less he feels. He will tear into enemies with his bare hands.
