Do you think CJ and Raph ever talk about their experiences with PTSD/anxiety together or even share advice on coping? Or do you think Raph would rather not? Explain your reasoning in your essay below

i dont think raph would go to him with his issues but i think it'd defo get talked about through asking CJ about things and checking up on him etc. and i think CJ would give raph alot of insight and advice on how to deal with anxieties and traumas,, tho alot of their convos would just be one of them saying something vile and the other one going "oh. is that not normal?" and the first one looking at the latter like this

but all in all i think they'd definitely help eachother with dealing with stuff... i think especially raph will assist CJ in just taking the blow on how much there is to unpack... his entire life has been a big traumatic event, i imagine suddenly living a sustained life without having to fight for survival every day would be a lot for him to deal with, especially the confusion and grief over what he has lost (maybe what he has lost feels a bit like pointless grief to him now? which is a trauma in itself) and also grieving what he never had. as we know, grief is also things we shouldve had but never got, and i think all the hamatos would be really helpful in dealing with that.

tho CJ seems to be a bit of a hardass on stuff like this which is incredibly understandable when you've had to fight for everything with zero stability at all anywhere you went. i could see him confiding in raph about it, but not only him if im honest. but there is an undeniable security about raph i think that the characters i the show feel, and i think CJ would seek the stability and consistent reliability that raph provides.

i also like that CJ doesnt seem too scared about calling out people when they do wrong, i can defo see CJ bluntly telling raph that bad coping mechanisms is stupid and makes things worse and worries everyone around. (this is ofc hand in hand with the good ol' HC that raph bottles shit up/avoids talking abt things. personally i think he never shuts up and frequently rants about stuff and lets his family know whenever shit is up but he avoids going too deep so his family thinks he's being fully transparent when actually he's just not voicing the worst shit. this is so real to me no i do not need therapy shut u)

i definitely think raph would confide in CJ about the krang thing. CJ is the one who knows the most about it, i can see raph going to him to just get a bit more information about what was going on, and also a bit of relief hearing that it didnt go as bad as it couldve gone... CJ being experienced with krangification would absolutely soothe worries and make him feel less alone about knowing what he knows and having gone through something thats a step further than his brothers

i hope this doesn't sound like a silly or weird thing to send you, but i'm autistic and have long thought of nico and a handful of other riordanverse characters as autistic and i love your posts about why nico in particular seems intentionally autistic-coded. but i've been thinking, if rick did intend for any of his characters to be autistic, why wouldn't he say so outside of the text at least? i can't think of a good reason why not, when he goes out of his way to be explicit about so many other characters' various marginalized identities and has confirmed things like reyna being asexual outside of the original text. so it gives me this nagging sort of doubt that maybe rick just made nico come off as so extremely autistic coded by accident, somehow. if it wasn't an accident i do kind of wish he'd say so because there's next to zero explicitly stated autistic representation in, like, any media so it'd be nice to have here even if not strictly necessary. either way though, like i said, i love your posts and i agree with you 100% about autistic nico! some others i like to think are autistic are annabeth and leo.

(Most of this is gonna be kind of a tangential ramble to your point and i apologize in advance just bear with me)

This actually touches upon something I've been meaning to do a write-up on recently, which is: depending on the coding, that is our explicit statement. In most coding, actually, that's kind of the point. (Also something something Death of the Author.)

You may have noticed a recent trend across media of characters saying things directly rather than expressing them in a natural way, and often this includes incredibly stilted dialogue of characters explaining things in very politically correct, wikipedia-esque descriptions and terminology that make absolutely no sense for the characters' personalities or mannerisms. This is born out of the idea that if something is not stated in explicit terms, no amount of evidence below an outright direct exact statement will ever count - if two characters of the same gender have an explicit kiss and wedding on-screen, it doesn't matter because they never said the word "gay," etc etc.

In PJO, prior to more recent books, we get plenty of examples of characters explaining parts of their identities without direct statements. Percy never needs to say in outright terms that he has PTSD from Gabe - and it doesn't make sense that he would! He's 12! He's never been diagnosed for that. He probably doesn't even know what PTSD is really. But we, the audience, know without a doubt he has PTSD, because it is clearly expressed to us. That is coding. Tyson is coded as having down syndrome. Nico is coded as being autistic. It doesn't make sense for Nico to turn to the camera and explain that he's autistic and what that means, because he definitely never got diagnosed for it and probably doesn't know what that means cause the diagnosis literally did not exist when he was growing up - and heck, autism terminology was still kind of getting sorted out back in 2007 when TTC was published, so it's unlikely we could have feasibly gotten any exact terminology wink-wink-nudge-nudges short of something like how Percy outright mentions other students called Tyson the r-slur in Sea of Monsters. And in fact we see that same exact style of coding with Nico later on in the series. Nico never turns to the camera and says word-for-word "I am gay, I am mlm, here's me wearing my exact pride flags" (until TOA/TSATS, which... did the exact thing i mentioned about characters speaking like theyre trying to get a good grade in therapy, or giving a powerpoint presentation). But it is never unclear that HoO is telling us outright that Nico is gay. It's not just hinted at. It's there, in your face. But entirely because no one ever outright says "gay" specifically it's technically still only coding. We know he's gay, we know the characters have trauma/ptsd, etc etc. We don't need it spelled out - that's just kind of condescending. It's like if you said describing a character with "eyes like moss" means they were "green-eye coded."

Nico being autistic-coded isn't hidden. It's not a secret. It's very overt. If you know what autism looks like, well, yeah, there he is. Even if you only know very vague 2007 media presentation of autism, Nico in TTC is easily recognizable enough as autistic because that's the point. Tyson is easily recognizable as being coded as having down syndrome and it's very clearly very intentional! It's just never spoon-fed in exact terms to the reader because it's not necessary! You've already been told the information necessary to tell you what is up with this character, so just plainly going "oh they're [x] in exact terms" is very much telling-not-showing and feels redundant. And while there are places for that kind of thing, most of the time it's very unnecessary. Sometimes coding is subtle, sometimes it's obvious, and yeah there are times where writers code characters unintentionally, but the textual evidence is there, and that's the whole point.

And that's what Death of the Author is about - it doesn't matter what the author intended at the end of the day, because if it's in the text it's in the text. You can look at author intent to try and figure out what that text means, but the text is the text. A Separate Peace is a very classic example - author John Knowles denies there being homosexual subtext, and meanwhile one of the protagonists living in 1942 puts on a pink shirt while saying he doesn't mind of people think of him as gay. What the author says after the fact doesn't matter - if it's there, it's there. So Rick saying anything outside of the books is completely irrelevant. And Rick talks about this a lot - he actively tells people that his statements outside of the books are just his own thoughts, but what's in the books is what's in the books, and if the text supports it then that's all the evidence you need.

Nico specifically is a case where yeah, he's clearly autistic-coded. It's very obvious and very obviously intentional when he's younger, and as the books progress it remains a background trait of his but is still notable (except for when it gets forgotten in TOA/TSATS like everything else, including the adhd/dyslexia, but i digress). It's a clear pattern within the first few books that Rick is intentionally including. It doesn't make sense, especially for the year the book was published, for the reader to be directly told in explicit terminology that Nico is autistic, because the reader is already being told that Nico is autistic.

And yeah, Rick doesn't mention Nico being autistic-coded outside of the text, but he also doesn't mention Tyson being coded as having down syndrome. He also said one time that Percy doesn't have PTSD at all, which is very incorrect starting from book 1. Again, Death of the Author. Whatever Rick says outside of the books does not matter, because he already said it in the books. And there's plenty of other stuff in the books that Rick doesn't touch upon, particularly relating to character identity - did you know Leo is Native? Sammy mentions that the Valdez family is Native in Son of Neptune but we don't get any specifics and then it's like never brought up again anywhere. That happens all the time in the series - and outside of the series - Rick can't possibly address every single point to confirm/deny everything from the books. That's what analysis is for! And that's why my blog exists 👍

Warnings: some violence normal from the series, Spoilers but i think nothing too serious. Fluff.

I'm going to say it, if you have this man as your caregiver, father, father figure, whatever, YOU GOT IT.

Ijichi is more likely to meet his future child through third parties, perhaps Gojo, Shoko, even Nanami.

but when it's usually a scenario similar to the others I wrote. But let's give it a Twist so it has more flavor.

I think Ijichi would only agree to take care of a child if that child was connected to him in some way, not with blood, but something deeper.

Let's say that (reader)'s mother/father was Ijichi's yearmate while they were at the academy.

Unlike Ijichi, (reader)'s parent were more capable as a Sorcerer and became one.

but whether due to work issues or "mysterious circumstances" they die.

leaving a heartbroken Ijichi and an orphaned (reader).

and Ijichi, being the good friend that he is, won't let his friend's child go with some strangers, so he takes matters into his own hands and adopts them.

He probably even asked Gojo and Shoko for favors so that he could have the upper hand in his case and have a better chance of having (reader).

Even Gojo and Shoko were surprised, but they found it cute in a way how he wanted to take care of (reader) for his friend.

(lowkey, Gojo may have fixed the whole case in Ijichi's favor, just for the drama).

Whether they are small or a bigger child, he doesn't care. He wouldn't leave them alone.

That is the first thing that (reader) would notice, he is someone with much more determination than he appears.

Ijichi is someone who is very VERY patient with (reader), even if they act spoiled or erratically, Ijichi tries to calm them down rationally and solve their problems together.

When they moved in together the first time he had several things prepared, but he was more than willing to change them if (reader) didn't like it.

In general, when he becomes an adopter, his highest priority is the comfort of (the reader) and above all that they know that he is not their enemy.

If, because they were in adoption services (reader), he is someone who is quite antiosocial or has problems of some kind, Ijichi will probably pay for therapy sessions and try to encourage him to talk to him.

Although if (reader) ends up being an explosive or angry child, he may be a little intimidated by them😅

but he pulls himself together relatively quickly remembering that he deals with Gojo and his students on normal days, so a normal kid shouldn't be a problem, right?

aside, like I said, Ijichi is very patient (Gojo had something to do with it...) and can handle a toddler's tantrums and outbrusts VERY well, and can also explain things in a way that they understand.

he's like the best babysitter.

Apart from that, as the (reader) grows up he tries to be present in their life, in any way.

whether taking them to school himself, going to pick them up during work, telling them about his day, etc.

I think Ijichi would be especially good with a (reader) who is not a sorcerer, seriously, this man already handles a lot of stress and knowing that his bby wouldn't be sent on a dangerous mission or that they wouldn't face special grade curses often makes him your heart stabilizes.

apart from the fact that Ijichi, lowkey, wants (reader) to have that normal childhood and worries that teenagers have without having to think about curses, things like studies, friends, boyfriends/girlfriends, hobbies, etc.

In this case I think that (reader) would simply believe that Ijichi is a driver for rich people (thanks to Gojo) and can have a stable relationship with him.

If on the other hand, (reader) shows interest and attitude/talent to be a Jujustu sorcerer...he is in PANIC.

and is asking everyone he knows for help to dissuade (reader) from joining the academy, whether it's Shoko telling (reader) about all the young people she has to take in at the morgue or Nanami telling her that it's not something to take lightly.

EVEN GOJO COULD HELP IJICHI, telling (reader) in all the details about how they could die horribly from the curses or how he could let INNOCENTS die if they're is not careful enough, the Guilty the'll face, etc.

(although there is also a 50% chance that Gojo will also do the exact opposite of what is asked of him and give him several reasons why (reader) should join. but it depends on how desperate Ijichi is).

If even after that (reader) he still wants to become a sorcerer of Jujustu, then Ijichi will have no choice but to accept.

although he will always be like "we can turn around if you want" "there's nothing wrong with wanting to get out!" "I know you know what you're doing but I don't want you to get hurt..." things like that, the man more than stress has anxiety.

I can definitely see Ijichi telling (reader) about his days at the academy, how Gojo used to tease him, what the classes were like and the subjects he was good at, etc.

obviously for (reader) it is amazing, and it makes them question why the hell he didn't want to continue with the job.

When they find out that it was part of Gojo then they go and fuck it up🤣

Ijichi is probably the one who teaches (reader) the basic techniques related to cursed energy, how to make simple veils and barriers.

He teaches him the basics before sending him to school for safety reasons. If he could he would teach them something more defensive, but unfortunately he can't :(

When (reader) is sent on his first mission, Ijichi is literally counting down time and decides that if they don't leave in less than an "uncertain random time" then he is sending reinforcements because they surely died.

But when they return and are fine, he melts with relief.

In general he is like this the first few times, he can't help it, he has already seen so many good sorcerers die, so many friends... I don't want to be the one who takes (reader) to his last stop.

If they come back hurt, Ijichi goes into "mother hen" mode and proceeds to pamper them with both pampering and things they want to distract them from the pain, even if it's not that serious.

Partly he wants to distract himself from the fact that oh my god that's the blood of the child he practically raised...

Although he is still a good doctor.

When (reader) thrives in the environment of sorcerers, Ijichi feels so relieved, at least they won't be constantly abused like he was with Gojo.

In general, Ijichi is going through a moment of "empty nest syndrome" since of course, he feels that (reader) now that he is strong and self-sufficient he no longer needs it...

and it's what he thinks about most during Shibuya.

Whether (reader) went or not, they definitely didn't go because Ijichi let them, things smelled bad to him from the beginning and he didn't want them to take the risk.

but fortunately or unfortunately they ignored him, as always.

When Ijichi is seriously attacked, he is convinced that he is going to die, and he thinks that maybe he can do it calmly, because (reader) he will be far away or at least with someone who is not weak like him...

Can you imagine that (reader) is the one who finds Ijichi dying??

They definitely got really scared.

Ijichi is not very aware when this happens, but he thinks that maybe he could be watching his life flash before his eyes, since he hears (reader) and they are calling him.

although something is strange...they don't sound good...

Imagine (reader) keeping Ijichi alive until Nanami arrives, all while yelling at him to stay with them, not to dare die there.

Hard moment, REALLY hard.

When all the shit in Shibuya blows up, (reader) and Ijichi are away, luckily.

After the traumatic experience, Ijichi ends up having (reader) as a kind of angry mini bodyguard (they are worried) following him everywhere eg in case he suddenly feels bad.

the roles are reversed between the two basically.

Although it's nice for Ijichi to see how (reader) cares so much about him even when he thought he didn't need him anymore.

but the truth is that (reader) needs him in one way or another, he is his FATHER after all.

and Ijichi probably needed that to realize that he wasn't as useless as he thought.

In general, a pretty cute relationship between two people who needed each other.

Best dad Ever. Whatever You do, whatever You sign up for, Ijichi is supporting You and the life You chose, you'll never be less for being happy. He just want You to be...You.

can you give me some advice? i always know exactly what i want to write for a cold opening/inciting incident and exactly what i want to write for an ending, but everything in between i just have no good ideas and have rewritten no less than forty times. any advice for coming up with a beginning and middle? i’m dying.

You're at a great point, to be honest - having the ending figured out is half the battle right there. For the rest of it, there's two pathways to consider

The Big Turning Points in the External Plot:

The Beginning - This is your world before, where you establish the status quo. You'll also establish what needs changing (an evil empire, a toxic relationship, facing the first day of school). The important thing to think about here is whatever you want the ending to resolve or confront will have its establishing roots in the beginning. If the main character ends with leaving his abusive home and finding comfort in friends and therapy, then we need to firmly establish that home in the beginning.

The Inciting Event - While this is where things change, it's merely the jumpstart of the change. The important thing to know is there's no path back to before the inciting event happens (joined the rebellion, slapped the abusive ex, passed out in front of your fifth grade class). The only path for the main character to take is forward.

The Middle (or Mid-Climax) - Your character seemingly finds the solution to their problem, but it backfires/makes things worse/leads to a bigger problem (saving the princess means the Death Star is tracking you down, leaving the state means your ex will ruin your reputation, the rush to get with the cool kids deeply hurts your best friend). One of the better ways of thinking about this is your character has been circling around how to fix their problem with solutions that don't work, and after the middle will have to turn down the path of finding what will.

The Climax - The big end fight, etc. We resolve the external plot (we blow up the Death Star!) because we've faced an internal crisis and beat it (believed in ourselves/the force). Or... this is a tragedy and the reverse happens. Either way, potential is realized, grasped, or lost.

The Ending - I think when you said you had an ending you might be thinking of the climax, but what I mean by ending here is just Wrapping Things Up. It's the final shot of the movie, it's the last chapter in finding out where our characters end up. It's the epilogue or sequel bait. Basically, you'll give your readers one last emotional ping to send them off on.

Now, it's easy to put those cards together, but how do you actually use them? I want you to switch gears and think about your story from a character standpoint. You have where your characters ended up - now what did they need to do to get there?

The Big Turning Points of the Internal Plot:

The Need for Change - The beginning is where you'll introduce your characters, their wants and needs, and establish what they need to accomplish even if they don't know it yet. Luke Skywalker is restless on his farm while the galaxy goes very wrong around him. We know what's wrong and what will need changed, even if he doesn't yet.

The No Return - The inciting event will yank your main character into your main plotline. Whatever happens will force them forward no matter how much they want to go back. A traumatic event, a witnessed attack, something that they can't run from, even if they try. Mirabel witnesses the house starting to fall about in Encanto. Even when no one else sees it or believes her, she knows she can't pretend it didn't happen.

The False Victory/Defeat - The path to the middle is best described as "the wrong way" in my book. The main character tries to fix the problem, but because they won't confront their own flaws or fears, they bungle it. They seek out someone else to solve the problem, or invest in the easy way out, and it doesn't work (or creates a bigger problem). The false victory is when things should have worked, but didn't. The false defeat is when things go badly wrong - but the main characters double down to fix it regardless.

The Road to the Climax - If your characters have been trying to fix things the wrong way in the first half of the book, the second is about fixing things the right way. Confronting fears, facing painful realizations, breaking out of toxic relationship - this part of the book will give your characters the tools they need to face the climax.

Weave these two together and you'll be able to find your footing. Get stuck in an action point (external plot), think about how it's affecting your character points (internal plot). If you already have an ending, sometimes the easiest thing to do is to work backwards. Good luck!

ooh TOM RIDDLE PLEASE for the therapy HC game. either as an 11 year old before/alongside starting hogwarts, or in fifth year following the myrtle incident 👀

omg I was thinking about Tom Riddle on my run where I was considering different characters. I accidentally went on for a while with this one haha.

11 years old -

I should refer him out since I don't work with children but that's kind of a boring answer haha.

The key thing would be offering a safe, secure base! Also, we'd do work on feelings identification. Also coping skills for those feelings. It would definitely be structured more like adult therapy (or at least given that gloss) because he would HATE feeling like he was being treated like a child.

If we had the opportunity to keep working together, I think we'd do some identity stuff from a social justice lens -- especially around class and blood status -- and working to help him get comfortable with himself and all of his identities.

We'd also do some sneaky case management work (eg food, housing, transportation) though it would always be framed as very empowering and include pieces he is able to do on his own rather than things adults are doing for him.

Would love to do EMDR with him too (same core beliefs as below -- I'm bad, damaged, worthless etc)

5th year -

ooooooh. I'm imagining he'd be forced to go into therapy as a part of healing from the trauma of being a hero and saving the school but losing myrtle?

Trust building would be SO hard and so important. I'm not sure I'd be able to do it honestly. Limits of confidentiality would have to be very cleared outlined.

I think he'd just go into it like a checklist and like another class and wait to get a good grade and impress the adults and then leave.

My only strategy would be to be VERY honest with him and have him get involved in the treatment -- making it more about teaching him psychology and therapeutic treatment techniques than about treating him like a client but he's still the client, and I am managing to get some subtle support in there. (But more like, here are skills that will be useful for you in the future!) I think he's desperate to brag to someone about what he did, and it's possible I could make it me.

IF we get the opportunity to do deeper work (which I doubt but I'm an eternal optimist), I'd want to do EMDR with him - probably around value-based core beliefs (I'm bad, I'm worthless, I'm damaged) and try to move those to things like "I'm ok as I am."

If I were his therapist, I'd get really tempted to break confidentiality when he tells me about his first meeting with Dumbledore so I can go yell at Albus lol

im so tired of ppl saying "projection/self-insert is cringe" fuck you not all of us are lucky enough to have really good support systems/therapy. it's hard enough going through a tough situation without ppl like this shaming u for having a coping mechanism. projection is a great way to feel supported when you don't have that many ppl supporting u irl

i'm living in a homophobic household as a lesbian whose gender is a whole clusterfuck. it's been a little over three years since i tried to come out and was rejected blatantly. ever since then my mom and i have fought like every single day. it's rarely even abt my sexuality/gender-- just about things like my interests, my grades, my college applications coming up, etc. often these fights escalate to the point of blatantly terrible statements-- "i regret ever having you," "i don't love you," "you disappoint me." she always apologizes, ofc, and occasionally she says she doesnt remember saying that stuff, but i remember it. it's almost like coming out just opened the floodgates for all our other issues. disclaimer my mom is actually so cool most of the time but these fights have a rlly bad impact on my mental health.

i know this is terrible, but god it hurts to see people with supportive parents. obviously im not angry they're being supported. that's great i'm really happy for them it just makes me so sad because i can't even imagine what that's like. but i think the most painful thing about seeing so many ppl with supportive parents is that it makes me feel so alone. and that's where the projection bit comes in.

62. What’s the weirdest reason you’ve ever shipped something?

This is kind of a tangent, but I'm going to take this opportunity to share one of the most embarrassing things I've ever done, which is write a fic for the video game Cuphead?? it came out a few years ago and I played it nonstop, it was very big, it's a 2D run and gun made up entirely of cartoon characters who are non-human and shaped like inanimate objects. the fic was NOT gen. it's currently on AO3 but I made a burner account to post it because it's so shameful. I won't bother getting into what the ship was. and it didn't even do numbers, it was widely panned. I also shipped mordecai and rigby from regular show. when I say spn is a tanget from my usual fare, this is what I mean.

shorter, better answer: I could ship any two characters who have a reason to not be together. nothing is too minor or too weird.

69. How do you write emotional scenes? do you ever feel what the characters feel?

what a good and heavy question. I think I draw on my own experiences a fair bit. I haven't experienced the kind of world ending over-the-top devotional obsession that Sam and Dean have, because who has, but I've done my fair share of loving, obsessing, betraying, making mistakes, fucking, sucking, etc, so I try my best to make things realistic by putting myself in their shoes. trauma's gotta be useful for something, right

for spn specifically, when I know I'll be writing an emotional scene between Sam and Dean my main thing is that I want it to feel like THEM, cause my biggest gripe with any fandom primarily concerning adult men is that people can write them reacting to situations how teenagers would, so, emotionally immaturely in a way that rings totally false and takes me out of it. waterworks, talking about their feelings in a "get a good grade in therapy" way.

so I watch old eps a lot when I've got something like that coming up in whatever I'm working on to make sure I hit the right beats verbally and in their motions, pacing, etc. what do they do with their hands, who interrupts. usually I pick eps where they fight. I've seen dark side of the moon so many times. fights in S1, S2, S4. a canon fight translates so well to any other tense, emotional scene in fic.

Media I Loved Last Week + Progress Report

My favorite thing I listened to is You Only Love Me by Rita Ora. Not me like

trying to hear if that's Taika's voice or not. And if it is... And if the song is about him... That's some pretty huge Fleetwood Mac Rumors energy. Like, that is a hard throbbing 9 inches of Fleetwood Mac Rumors energy. The thing is while I would like that for the #drama (and the Fleetwood Mac Rumors energy), I would hate that so much more because :'( I want them to be happy. So if it is Taika I hope it's either about some other guy and she just used his voice or they already Worked It Out previous to recording (or post I guess, that's fine too. during?). Anyway. 9/10 for the. fucking song itself. Someone who can hear sounds good c'mere and help me be an actual crazy person.

ETA: I listened to the song 8 more times while writing this post, and that is definitely Taika's voice. BTW. "Reetz, it's me." REETZ. Reetz!!! "This how I am, and this is how you are." I'm going to dig to China with my teeth.

My favorite thing I watched last week is Hustlers. To be more accurate my favorite thing I watched last week is Marry Me, but since I think I've already said that I decided to list the one I hadn't seen before. I love women. Don't know what else to tell you folks. I love women. 9/10

My favorite thing I read last week is sure as the sun come up from the south by cardinal_sin. To be totally honest I was not particularly thrilled with anything I read last week, but out of the available options this one is the best. It's pretty hot, but I didn't like the Wants A Good Grade In Therapy dialogue or the semi-frequent kink immersion breaking Izzy (POV character) did. As in, it's a blushing bride roleplay, and Izzy spent half of it thinking about how they're not really married, he's not really a girl, he's not really a virgin, he can't really get knocked up, etc. What did I say? 8? It's probably more like a 7/10.

I wrote 18 words total last week lol RIP. That was just a braindump note for an idea for a dark fantasy horromance to potentially write after I finish everything the fuck else on the docket. Still no additional progress on Curse The Messenger, but I'm planning to re-draft it this coming week to Get Back Into It. Wish me luck. (Also this heart is a different shade of pink on paper, but doesn't look that way on camera.)

born as the youngest of two boys in a middle class family on feb 9, 2001 - aka he’s a twenty-one year old aquarius! ummm his brother is 6 years older & was always the more outgoing & ambitious of the two

has had anxiety since he was very young but didn’t get diagnosed until later in life, so there were a lot of questions regarding him? why he never played with the other kids, why he was so quiet, why he got so flustered/upset over teachers simply asking him questions in class when they KNEW he had the answer, etc

stuck to himself, got very “comfortable” in solitude tho i would still say he did want to be close to other people, but didn’t know where to start

super intelligent. didn’t do much aside from read & study, so he was always at the top of his class, made perfect grades. the people in his life expected really great things from him, often saying his brain was their ticket to better days - if he could work with his brain instead of his hands, he’d be golden

anyway! he was a mama’s boy, spent a lot of time with her & she always made him feel more normal abt himself or whatever...

lost his mom when he was around ~13, retreated even further into his shell and his grades started slipping. never really came back up

he did sorta cope by fucking around with a guitar she’d left behind and this was the beginning of his love for music ^^^

ummm fast forward! he started making his own music, built up a small following on tiktok under the username “bugluvr3000″ where he tease/s/d snippets of songs he was working on & posted covers - not super active on tt right now because he’s trying to focus on “real life” and take a break from sns... has taken to busking locally tho!

he hardly graduated high school tbh so his family kinda thought he burnt out and that he wouldn’t get into college but he’s currently enrolled in [university tbd, not a good school really so no biggie] as a biology student. not suuuuper passionate abt education, really just went because he felt like he had to and because he knows he can’t count on music to pay his bills - w his current career path, he’s aiming to be an entomologist (bug scientist)

still pretty nervous & introverted, but he’s in a healthy, committed relationship that has helped him feel more grounded / confident and he’s working on feeling capable as an individual too! therapy every other thursday y’all

his anxiety is a big part of the reason why his music hasn’t actually taken off yet - he does busk & he occasionally posts his songs online, but when he starts doubting himself, he goes through “dry spells” where he won’t perform and he deletes most of his stuff. insecurity holds him back for suurrre but also i mean it’s not like he’s the next justin bieber or anything

Every time I get into stranger things daydreaming (bc Im incapable of writing it down so it's not fic lol) I go straight to "what if I shove some magic ocs in there. For flavor and balancing the scales against the upside down" and giving El someone to like. Teach her to diversify/handle her powers in a healthier way is an obvious thing but so is unlocking Will's wizard powers. Like the kid is built to have wizards powers! in my heart! all the building blocks are there in canon! (until season 4 I didnt have any canon not-experimented-on superpowered people but! it makes sense that if you can induce it subjecting the mothers to mega medical trauma you can also get magic people naturally so)

(The other purpose of the ocs is, usually, getting billy out of that house and possibly teaching him to set things on fire with his mind for therapy reasons. And also railing him. This is where I forget about plot you know)

Also I headcanon the upside down is an interplanar demonic fungus that eats worlds and is always looking for a new place to make the first tear through the mind of anyone that enters its territory by mistake/without training/without enough protection, but it's been a while since I thought about it so that's all I remember of my reasoning there?? They just have eldritch black mold on the walls of the world

I have recently been working on an oc that’s 50% retool of older st oc concepts I’ve had and 50% new concepts who’s meant to fill a lot of these narrative holes you’re talking about!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! also ofc have played with an obligatory “other number kid who somehow didn’t die and is an older sib to El” bc ofc.... you Gotta have at least one of those bad boys to get it out of your system lol. I’ve also converted over a telepathic xmen oc in the past to act as a sibling/mentor for El before we even had henry as proof of nonlab grown telepaths bc ofc there has to be naturally occurring ones. I feel like it would be weird if there wasn’t?

I’m currently working on solidifying as much as I can about the first one bc I’m trying that novel thing were I actually write shit which has been going.... shockingly well for me so fkgjddfgfd gotta strike while it’s hot.

The current flagship oc is a goth girl (the girl here is loose bc the nb energy is..... MASSIVE lol) in Billy and Steve’s grade who’s been faking being Very Normal since freshman year to improve her college and scholarship apps but even then is considered a very intense person. Ends up getting involved with the plot bc she sympathizes with the byers after Will goes missing bc her family life isn’t great (parents still act like upper class nyc partiers, neglect and endanger the kids, her dad has huge patrick batemen energy etc) and she’s also the older sibling to a girl in Will’s grade so it’s all Too Real for her and she and her brothers (fraternal twins who’re 15 in s1) help out with the search and naturally get drawn into the weirdness. The middle school sister does too bc she gets stuck with the party while her siblings are out and dksghlksdf whOOPS.

I’m currently deciding if any ocs should get powers and if so who should get get them. Like this goth girl, one of her siblings or a whole new character, or just using one of my pre-existing ocs from elsewhere. Because I agree, it kinda sucks to put it all on El’s shoulders when she’s just a kid and it’d be nice for her have a mentor who actually cares for her and is sort of a good person unlike peter/henry.

Currently goth girl is my “lovecraft/horror/dark fantasy” aficionado so I can use lovecraft-esque lore and occultism to help flesh out that side of shit. Even if she ends up having no powers she does know a lot of shit about the general ideas behind them in occult circles and can act as a mentor to El and later Will. Because your right, Will is BUILT for wizardry. He’s a wizard ‘arry.

Also on the getting Billy out of that house thing-- 100% part of the narrative duties of goth girl. she understands how dogshit his family life is and sympathizes. her and her brothers are working on house flipping by s2 so they can sell them and make a profit (the 80s is when you see it become more of a Thing bc of foreclosures). In Runaway Max we get told that big part of why Billy’s so awful in Hawkins is bc he literally has nothing to do and nowhere to go. So him linking up with them means he can demo shit and get out of the house and fuck around with people his age who also like Metallica in a way that’s productive. I also love you mention Billy and arson bc goth girl unironically likes arson and does in fact, suggest it to him for stress relief kdlsfjgsdf  

I also love your idea of interplanar demonic fungus because like.... that IS EXACTLY THE ENERGY I GET FROM THE UPSIDE DOWN????? Like especially after seeing so much of it in s4 and how all the vines are connected and there’s this whole hivemind element to it. Like it gives big mycelium network energy. Likely there’s more to it bc the Mindflayer doesn’t read as demon fungi to me but like.... it’s 100% a part of what’s going on in that world.

The Mentor is someone who selflessly and wholeheartedly supports those around them, often at their own expense. They can be a parent, best friend, partner, teacher, guardian, sibling, etc. The Mentor usually isn’t the center of attention but supports those who are lost, oftentimes because they are lost themselves. Misery loves company, but the Mentor would rather burn alone if it means they can guide you out of the flames. 

ABOUT

Despite being an overachiever with a long and impressive list of accomplishments, she is also insecure and starved of attention. She’s prone to becoming besotted and obsessed with anyone who offers her a little bit of help or affection. This is largely the result of losing her father at a young age and being emotionally neglected by her perfectionist mother. It doesn’t matter how hard she tries to be the kind of daughter her mom would be proud of, she always falls short. Her endless need for approval took a huge toll on her during her senior year of high school when she got involved with the wrong crowd and did things she shouldn’t have done. As a result, her grades suffered drastically and she lost her academic scholarship. Her mother wasted no time reminding her of how much of a disappointment she was. But it didn’t matter because at least she was moving out of her mother’s house and into a dorm. In college, she tried to focus on herself again but got involved with a man who took advantage of her, posted her nudes online, and made her the laughingstock of the school. She was teased and groped by guys and bullied by girls. Enough was enough, she went back to her dorm after an afternoon of humiliation and attempted to end her life. Her roommate found her unconscious several minutes later and called an ambulance. Now she’s in recovery and transferred to Westham University. She’s hoping she can turn her life back around and become the kind of person who doesn’t need approval. Rather, she’s been working at the college as a RA and mentoring other patients at the rehabilitation center. 

CONNECTIONS

THE BAD BOY  — The Mentor has been a huge part of The Bad Boy’s recovery. The physical therapy helps get his body into shape, but it’s The Mentor’s patience and warmth that keeps him motivated. She’s become his compass and is the reason for his self-reflection. There are times when he can’t stand her and wants her to leave him alone but he’s secretly relying on her to get him through his suffering and he can’t stay away from her for too long. The Mentor puts up with all of his shit because she can tell he’s real and doesn’t pretend to be someone he’s not. She knows what she’s getting with him. Which, is a huge difference from the relationship she had with her abusive ex who spent months leading her on with lies.  

THE BURNOUT — The Burnout is a lost soul and The Mentor feels responsible to keep them from killing themselves or accidentally overdosing. When everyone else writes the Burnout off as a lost cause, the Mentor is the one who reminds them they can get through anything they set their mind to. The Burnout doesn’t always take their advice, but they have shown up to a few meetings at the Recovery Center where the Mentor works and used The Mentor as an emergency contact whenever they’re in trouble or need a place to go. 

THE FOOL’S GOLDEN BOY — The Mentor thought she could trust The Fool’s Golden Boy. He was different from the bad crowd she got involved with in high school, which caused the loss of her academic scholarship. She thought he was mature and driven. Their goals to succeed far beyond the educational system seemed to align. He came from a good family, had a nice car, and treated her with respect. But the Fool’s Golden Boy had a secret. He was a sadist who had a habit of making girls fall in love with him just so he could destroy them. It was his idea of fun to embarrass and dehumanize girls — which stems from the horrible relationship he had with his mother before she died. It’s disgusting and monstrous but he can’t help it. So he had her fall in love with him and then he spread her nudes around campus and watched everything unfold with a smile. It’s been a couple of years since then, but after doing the same thing to another girl, he was finally caught and expelled. Now, he just transferred to Westham.

⚡️ Hobbies

Reality shows. She knows they're fake, but she loves to laugh at people embarrassing themselves. She watches them with Kirby and they have debates over who is the worst person on the show.

She sketches. Jill has this large art notebook in her room where she sketches out major events in her life, good and bad. She also draws future events she wants to happen, such as images of her walking down a red carpet with paparazzi following her, and images of you and her together having a celebrity wedding where Rihanna attends.

Jill reads as a form of escapism. She likes YA novels because of how unrealistic they are. In those, the main character, usually a woman, gets what she wants and gets to be a hero. It's a sort of catharsis for her to escape into it.

Jill is extremely toxic online and definitely enjoys leaving negative comments on forums or youtube videos. She's absolutely a cyberbully, and if you complain about it, she says she'll stop, but ultimately gets back into the habit on and off throughout her life.

🌷 what they do to relax

Jill likes to smoke on the roof of her house at night. Usually on the side away from the street, so she doesn't get caught with weed by any potential patrolling officers. But when she's feeling bold, she'll sit on the side facing the street and call Olivia on her cell. They both see each other and talk quietly on the phone, finding it amusing as Olivia sits by her window and Jill sits on the roof.

Social cleansing. Jill gets angry easily, even if she's pretty good at hiding it from most people. So when life is getting really on her nerves, she'll deactivate her social media accounts for a few days or so and kinda isolate in her room.

🌻 if they have pets

Nah. I feel like if she did, she'd be the type to have harmed them as a kid. She knows its fucked up, so she never asked for pets ever since she played around cruelly with her pet goldfish in 3rd grade.

Jill wants to go blond so bad. She loves how it looks on Kirby, she's just worried it wouldn't look good on her bc she doesn't know she's Emma Roberts.

Jill loves plaid or striped clothing. Anything with a pattern she's down with, especially when she pairs it with black pants or jeans.

Jill has gone to therapy before, under the guise of depression and anxiety. But what she really wanted to do is talk to someone about her darker thoughts, and the way she seems to have trouble empathizing with people. She ended up not doing so anyway, because she got cold feet and felt like she couldn't open up.

Jill respects Billy Loomis, but she hates who he was as a person from what she knows of him. This is because of what happened with Trevor and that she hates fuckbois. She thinks the only cool thing about him is that he ended up making Sidney famous that's it.

Jill doesn't love her mom. She has trouble making genuine connections, and this extends to family. She may like her friends and hanging out with them, but even they don't mean much to her. It takes a very special person for her to genuinely care for them, BUT it can happen. And it does, when you come along.

Jill likes cartoons. I'm talking Tom and Jerry, Young Justice, Invader Zim, etc. She's embarrassed about this, and the only person who knows is Kirby, who is sworn to secrecy.

for the trope grading thing: yes i'll bite grade hermit!tommy

Oh boy here we go. So many issues.

TL;DR, Hermit!Tommy is a solid grade F for me. I see why people like it, but as a Hermit main who's followed the DSMP since August 2020, I find it generally harmful to the Hermitcraft fandom and unfaithful to c!Tommy.

Disclaimer: While I was in the DSMP fandom for around half a year, I have not considered myself part of the fandom since June. I personally have never been a fan of c!Tommy, but I talked to people who are in writing this so hopefully the bias isn't too pronounced. I've been watching Hermitcraft since March 2020, right around the start of season 7. While this will be critical of the Hermit!Tommy trope, I don’t intend it to be negative. If you like it, good for you! Write what you love! These are just the reasons I don't.

For those of you who want my full breakdown of the trope, brave the read more below.

Initially, I was actually really open to the idea of the Hermit!Tommy trope. The first big fics to start this up began around the time of Exile, and as someone who personally really didn't like that arc, I was more than ready for something that wasn't angst-centered. I followed a few fics with this trope for a while, the longest for 2 months-ish before I dropped it and started avoiding it.

Why? Well for one, a lot of these fics seem to come from people who are DSMP mains and only know cursory information about Hermitcraft. Nothing wrong with that, have fun with it, but as someone who is a Hermit main, it rubbed me the wrong way. Hermitcraft would be portrayed as this utopia where everybody got along and had perfect coping techniques and would drop everything to help this random dude who dropped in their server.

Which, um, this would not happen. Hermitcraft is chaotic. They are certainly healthier than the DSMP, but that's a low bar. ZombieCleo held a game where people hunted for each other's heads. The Turf war and Mayor race were whole things. C!Docm77 would not trust a random teenager on his server as far as he could throw him. Above all, Hermitcraft is private. Getting in requires not only getting sponsored by an existing Hermit, but the unanimous consent of every member of the server. Random teenagers don't mix in well, traumatized or not. (Also, they would not tolerate swearing).

Secondly, the characters of the Hermits often are twisted to center almost entirely around Tommy. It got to the point where a friend and I made a parody of the Sexy Lamp Test, the Generic Father Figure Test. If a Hermit can be replaced with any other Generic Father Figure (Phil, Wilbur, Batman, etc), they fail the test. The Hermits would not all simultaneously adopt Tommy for reasons explained above. While I can very much see them worry and provide help where needed, it would not be the whole server and it would not be at the level of parent/child.

For my last point, we'll talk about Tommy. Like I said before, though, I'm biased against Tommy, so I found a friend who rather likes him, and got their opinion, so these are their points below:

1) Infantilization: "When I hit rock bottom, I need support, not someone to smother me or shove me onto a healing arc. A lot of fics treat Tommy's like he's incapable."

2) Stubbornness: "Tommy's so fucking stubborn he refuses to accept help. It results in a lot of fics having a constant cycle of tommy refusing to get healed and fleeing while the hermits try to force it."

3) Fanfic Therapy: "The one hermit tommy story I like was good bc it wasn't forced, he just came around bit by bit. Most fics don't do that."

Anyways, that's my rant grading of Hermit!Tommy. If you like it, I really don't begrudge you of it. I’m sure there are fics out there that are great and might not even fall into my criticisms listed here. At the end of the day, you can choose how you want to characterize the Hermits and Tommy, and for a lot of people, including me at one point, it was/is loved mostly for the angsty, hurt/comfort vibes. Which is valid. It's just... not for me. At all.
