there is a difference between being born to a throne, maliciously vying for a throne, stealing a throne, and having a throne thrust upon you when you are already in the midst of an identity crisis. And I fear Loki's place in the line of succession has people unable to differentiate between any of these
#you can't really argue he planned the extent of Thor's downfall#that was all Odin#Loki didn't force Thor to invade Jotunheim he isn't even the one who gave Thor the idea -- Thor did that all on his own!#that he was doing waswasa @ thor didn't help but wasn't really crime worthy on its own#Thor himself took time convincing the other warriors to be okay with the trip despite the treason and danger involved#like. what. Thor can't differentiate good advice from bad and is emotionally volatile and reckless and that's Loki's fault?#THOR was the one who got them past Heimdall too#the entire ordeal inadvertently showed off the favouritism Thor was receiving in comparison to Loki#even though Loki was the one supposedly so easily influencing Thor to such an extent#call Thor a puppet the way he--wait. no. that sounds weird. uhhhhh#you get the point#people will claim Loki was all up in there rearranging Thor's mental processes to cause his downfall#when really it was Loki doing the bare minimum instigation and watching things only devolve from there#because Thor WAS reckless and immature ?? and he WAS quick to anger and enjoyed exerting his power with violence ??#Loki didn't STEAL THE THRONE FROM THOR he literally just is implied to undermine the coronation#that's not even confirmed but we assume it's true that he let the frost giants in near the casket etc.#Loki has his own actual crimes that he did against Thor and hugging his bro's arm and saying 'you're soooooo strong and correct' was not on#even if you manage to argue Loki was cheering Thor on for the invasion (he wasn't) it was clearly to dob Thor in with Odin#which he did when he had some guard inform Odin#that Odin's chosen punishment was for Thor's disobedience aside stop blaming Loki for the damage ODIN inflicted on him#focus on Loki making up lies to Thor about how Odin died instead like at least Loki DID SOMETHING for that#you can even ascribe as evil a motive as you want there bc Loki was slipping fr#twirling his hair and telling Thor he's smarter about the realm's safety than the king was on the normal scale#you want to talk morals go look at how eager Thor was to invade mass destroy and massacre in the other realm#and expected Odin to 'finish them off! together!' bc he was power high on whatever bloodlust pheromones battle apparently imitates for him#sigh. this is why you can't have nice things Thor. no Loki you're barely any better. sit down. have a cookie.

DFTF & the gist of everything; a theory
(warning: long post, no cut)
*cracks knuckles* OKAY. so i’m about to give my two cents on the theories surrounding the comeback but this is gonna be a long one so strap in and enjoy the ride i guess??
but before i get started on the DFTF stuff i just want to do a bit of recap on the members’ powers and their counterparts back in mama era (yes i’m going all the way back bear with me). from the beginning, we are shown that each member has a special power and those from exo-k have a counterpart in exo-m and the pairings went like this:
xiumin (frost) - suho (water manipulation)
luhan (telekinesis) - kai (teleportation)
kris (dragon’s flight) - chanyeol (phoenix’s fire)
lay (healing) - baekhyun (light)
chen (lightning) - kyungsoo (enhanced strength/earth?)
tao (time control) - sehun (wind manipulation)
i think these parings are fine but for me a couple of changes could have been made to make more sense to their powers. in my opinion, i think it should be:
xiumin - suho
luhan - sehun
kris - chanyeol
lay - baekhyun
chen - kyungsoo
tao - kai
obviously, xiumin/suho make sense bc their powers are related to each other where suho’s is the foundation of xiumin’s more refined control of the element. kris/chanyeol also makes sense for the same reason. for lay/baekhyun, healing powers can reconstruct damages from wounds and even bring dying flowers (maybe even people) back to their full health. basically, lay restores a living thing’s energy. but light is a form of energy too. flowers need light to survive and so does the rest of the planet for that matter. but i think baekhyun uses that light to be able to concentrate the energy into his hands to form a beam powerful enough to blast anything in its path (who are u? tony stark??).
Tumblr media
tbh, i’m still kind of unclear about ksoo’s power on whether he can actually manipulate earth (like an earthbender) or if he has enhanced strength. either way, he can shake the earth and obviously he’s more powerful on the ground. with lightning, it can travel three ways: cloud to cloud, cloud to air, and cloud to the ground. you can think of their powers as being related by how the fissures in earthquakes are similar to the patterns of lightning. kyungsoo causes the rumbling in the earth, while chen causes rumbling (thunder) in the sky (hence why they are parallels of each other in mama mv)
Tumblr media
for those i think should be switched, we’ll start with luhan/sehun. sehun has the power of wind but throughout the history of their powers i don’t think we’ve actually seen him have full control of his ability? in mama, he’s in the desert (this is gonna come up again later!!) with a raging tornado behind him. i mean, i guess he could be doing that intentionally but for the sake of this entry i’m going to assume he can summon the wind but he can’t fully control it. meanwhile, luhan can easily manipulate objects and we could think of this as him just actually manipulating the air around that object. luhan’s control of the air is more stable whilst sehun’s is the opposite.
Tumblr media
for tao/kai i think it makes more sense for them to be counterparts since kai travels through space and while tao’s power is to stop/start time, he has the to potential to travel through time as well. these two go hand in hand because if they’re together, they’d be even stronger as traveling through time could be faulty since the time you might want to go back or forward to isn’t going to be in the same exact location as you are now.
BUT WAIT! we’re left with 9 members so what happens now??
i actually made a “theory” about exo having new counterparts back in 2016 but i’m scrapping the main idea from it and will just be referring to particular points going forward. so for now, let’s go with the assumption that their counterparts are as they are in my version. this means that sehun, chanyeol, and kai no longer have their counterparts. now what?
let’s first make two assumptions:
their powers become stronger when they are with their counterparts: like i’ve mentioned above, they’re stronger together than they are apart. but additionally, it’s a bit safer for them to be separated since they are much more easily located by the red force if they are all in one place.
if one loses their counterpart (i mean for good and not just separated by distance) then eventually, the power of the one who was lost will manifest itself in the one who is left
for (2), it would make sense then as to why in sehun’s pathcode teaser, he finds the toys floating in mid-air. at this point, he’s unaware that he’s actually the one doing this. (@raven-rin points out the similarities between luhan’s scene in mama with the orbs and sehun’s “planet” in the DFTF teaser photo which supports my theory that they are connected in this way).
Tumblr media
in chanyeol’s pathcode teaser, he seems to have lost some control of his power whereas in mama mv, he was able to keep a small flame in his hand under control.
Tumblr media
for kai, we’ve mainly see him teleporting on earth and he’s had quite a good control on his power since the beginning. but i think now, with tao’s power manifesting itself in him, he’s now able to teleport beyond just earth. we can take his mmmh mv for example too where he’s teleporting between worlds and currently, his power symbol is that of a hexagon with a keyhole in the center; he is the door between worlds and the main connection between the others.
SO THE POINT TO ALL THIS IS there was a theory posted by @vampwrrr and pointed out by @loeyarc on twitter about how the members are not in their own planets but they actually landed in someone else’s. i think this could be true since xiumin is in a planet with aurora’s (baekhyun’s planet), kyungsoo is in a red planet that could possibly be chanyeol’s. kai’s might be in kyungsoo’s and baekhyun’s in a planet where there’s ice which could mean he’s in xiumin’s planet. i’m not sure about the power swapping (tho i absolutely love the idea) but i think they might have just landed in planets they were closest to.
but i want to point out how chanyeol is in a planet that looks like a desert
Tumblr media
now, this could actually be sehun’s planet in parallel to where he was in mama. sehun, on the other hand, is actually in luhan’s planet (going back to the reference @raven-rin made).
Tumblr media
i think here, he’ll finally realize why his powers have been glitching (from pathcode) and how he now has the ability to move objects like luhan did (disclaimer 1: since not all members are present for this comeback, who’s to say they can only land in the planets of the active members’ planets??. disclaimer 2: not saying luhan is still member, he clearly isn’t. i meant for members who are enl*sted. for all we know, one or two of those planets could be chen’s or lay’s, etc.)
idk if DFTF is a pre-quel to power or a follow up but *if* the latter was the case, then the end of power makes sense. throughout the mv, we see suho, xiumin, kai, chen, chanyeol, sehun, and kyungsoo fighting the giant red force robot in possibly a different planet (i’m thinking the exos actually banded together to track down the red force themselves to get their powers back and in every planet they encounter these RF bots who keep destroying the planets they occupy) but for most it, baekhyun isn’t there fighting with them. he does show up near the end which confirms that he’s in the same place as the others but why isn’t he fighting?
let’s recall that their powers are stronger when they’re with their counterparts. if we go by the theory from lucky one that some members lost their powers, then it makes sense why none of them were able to fight off the bot with their powers alone (which they regained by defeating it in the end). i do think they are still strong at this point but their powers are weak. as for baekhyun, his counterpart is far away. lay hasn’t really been with them since monster era so he was probably playing it safe by not actively fighting alongside the others. (if he’s powerless and separated from lay then he’s the most vulnerable compared to the others)
at the end of power, we see baekhyun falling into the water/ocean. how did this happen? if exo left the planet they were in in power, it’s possible that after defeating the bot, it triggered the red force of their location. the red force then proceeds to destroy that planet in an attempt to kill exo once and for all
Tumblr media
(disclaimer 3: screencap is meant to show an example, not that this is exactly in the same timeline as power)
but the exos manage to escape in their ship in time but their ship malfunctions (could be hit by debris from the planet’s explosion) and they have no choice but to leave the ship. i think their ship has “escape pods” meant for each one of them as a way to escape safely in case of an emergency. but let’s say these pods will immediately head for the planet they were set to (again, kind of like a safety protocol type thing where they get sent to different locations to avoid detection from the red force). to add, say that in the chaos, the exos just went into whatever pod they got to first which is how they end up landing in different planets.
maybe something happens to baekhyun’s pod and he has to manually eject himself from it. but we see he lands in the middle of an ocean
Tumblr media
and in his DFTF photo teaser, we see he’s in a planet with ice caps and water
Tumblr media
you still with me? i’m about to tie everything together and finish i promise!
remember the second assumption we made? “the power of the one who was lost will manifest itself in the one who is left”. what if the red force know this? what if the reason they’ve been after exo is because of this fact? but if that were the case, where would the powers manifest in if the exos are gone? i know the lot of us skip the intro of mama but it states that an eye of red force “coveted the heart of the tree of life and the heart slowly grew dry” which meant that the tree of life is the source of the twelve force’s powers.
Tumblr media
everything started with the tree of life and in an attempt to save its remaining powers, they split it in half and hid the halves from the red force. the power of the tree of life is what connects exo. but as mentioned, if one is lost, the power will continue to live inside another. if the red force destroys all of exo, the powers they possess will be returned to the tree of life and if the tree of life is whole again, the red force will in no doubt abuse its power and continue their plans from the very beginning.
then we can say that in lucky one, it was another tactic used by the red force to extract their powers. those extracted powers were then used to create x-exo. since x-exo are under the red force’s orders, if they manage to destroy exo, their powers will undoubtedly go to their x-counterparts. but as the red force control’s x-exo they still have the upper hand once this plan is set in stone. i mention this to get us back on the current timeline seeing as DFTF may be strongly connected to power which precedes obsession. but then again, i’m not even sure about the exact order of the timeline but this is just my theory so it’s just for fun!
/end.

You're confusing head canon with canon.
How so? I’m assuming this is in response to this post.
Loki, throughout all of his MCU appearances, is motivated by a desire for love, praise, adulation, etc. Loki did not want the throne in the first Thor film. He admitted so himself and his actions during that movie largely support this. He even says this again during his show, leading me to further believe this is true and he wasn’t lying. Which, granted, he is known to do....
Tumblr media
Loki wanted Odin’s approval in the first Thor film. That is what drove him throughout most of the movie. He snuck the frost giants into Asgard to postpone Thor’s coronation, not to seize the throne. Loki wanted to prove to Odin that Thor wasn’t ready yet (and he was right, sorry not sorry.) He didn’t want the throne himself. This plan succeeded, but Loki couldn’t leave well enough alone and he goaded Thor to go to Jotunheim. And we all know how well that went….
Odin rescued them, but not before Loki discovered he was Jotun. His parents never told him about his heritage because they “wanted to protect him from the truth." If they truly thought there was nothing wrong with him being Jotun, why would they have felt a need to protect him? Asgard is a prejudiced civilization. They colonized the other eight realms and, judging by their rhetoric against them, largely think themselves above them. They nonchalantly call the Jotuns monsters, compare Midgardians to goats, and refer to the Dark Elves as creatures. Thor and Loki grew up with stories of Asgard’s greatness and, for the most part, believed them for most of their lives. When young Thor proclaimed he would “hunt the monsters down and slay them all,” Odin only told him not to seek out war. He said nothing about the negative language used to describe the Jotnar, even with young Loki present. It was completely normalized.
When Loki confronted Odin about his heritage, he referred to himself as “the monster parents tell their children about at night.” That language didn't come from a vacuum and he is directing it not only at the Jotuns but at himself. When he fought Thor at the end of the film, he told him he would “destroy that race of monsters.” Loki holds a lot of self-loathing towards himself for a multitude of reasons, but I'll settle on his heritage for this post. He thinks little of the Jotnar and so thinks little of that part of himself. He blamed his heritage for his feelings of inadequacy when compared to Thor.
I would make an argument that Loki feared Thor after he learned of his heritage, too. Thor vowed to destroy all of the Jotun as a child, he wanted to “finish them together” with Odin, and he told Odin in the Bifrost that “the Jotuns must learn to fear me just as they once feared you.” I think Loki lied to Thor about Odin’s “death” to keep him from interfering with his plans for Jotunheim, but also because he was afraid of him. I can’t find the reference, but I am almost positive that Hiddleston himself confirmed this at some point of time. (Btw, I don’t think for one second Thor would have hurt him, but Loki is an emotionally stunted idiot.)
All of this leads me to be highly skeptical that Loki from Thor 1 would proclaim himself as the “rightful king of Jotunheim” and freely use the Casket of Ancient Winters in front of the Asgardian army. He was still deeply ashamed of this fact at this time and would not have wanted it known. (He supposedly overcame this by Thor 3, but I don’t think the narrative earned it. The movie told us he came to accept it enough to put it in a play, but it didn’t show us how he got to that point. Regardless, he was certainly not emotionally at that point during Thor 1.)
Also, at the very least, the Casket should have revealed his Jotun form, which it didn’t.
After he discovered his heritage, Loki’s motivation was to prove himself a worthy son of Odin by any (terrible) means necessary. In the end he failed to destroy Jotunheim and Thor destroyed the Bifrost. Even while hanging from the edge of the bridge, Loki sought Odin’s validation, which was denied. Loki was as low as he could be and he let go. He landed on Sanctuary I and Thanos found him. I’m aware there are a bunch of theories about what happened next, but I really don’t want to get into them here because that is all they are really. Theories. Nothing solidly confirmed in canon.
Regardless, something happened between Thor 1 and Avengers 1 that twisted Loki into the would-be conqueror of Midgard. That desire was born out of his anger towards Thor and Odin after Thor 1. Loki said he wanted to be king in Avengers 1, but really he wanted to exact revenge against something Thor held dear. He wanted to hurt Thor. He wanted the adulation a throne would give him. He did not think he could have Odin’s love so he would at least have Odin’s respect as a king. He wanted Odin to see that he was just as worthy of a throne as Thor and him - which is batshit crazy but so was Loki in Avengers 1. Even Coulson knew Loki didn’t know what he wanted. “You lack conviction.” A throne would never have made him happy and I think, as messed up as he was, even Thor 1 Loki realized this.
I completely believe that Thor 1 Loki would come to Earth and even seek to destroy it to avenge his brother’s death. And he was definitely unstable enough at the time to do so– see Jotunheim. Despite everything he says to the contrary, Loki loves Thor. I do not believe that when everything was settled at the end of that episode that Loki would seek to rule Earth though. He had no motivation to do so yet. That only came after he fell from the Bifrost and met Thanos. I would have believed it more if he had betrayed Fury in the end of the episode and still tried to destroy Earth, but not to rule it. Thor 1 Loki giving his Avengers 1 “you were made to be ruled” speech at the end of that episode comes across like the writers just copied and pasted their favorite moments from the movies into the show without an understanding of the motivation behind them or why those moments worked in the first place. It’s sloppy writing and in the end, disappointing, because I for one would love to see a story tackle an unstable Thor 1 Loki hell-bent on avenging his brother’s untimely demise whilst dealing with all of his other issues. I’m here for the premise, not the execution.
I would have also rather have seen HYDRA taking out the Avengers than Hank Pym. It doesn’t make sense in canon that HYDRA allowed the Avengers to form under their control. It would be in their vested interest to eliminate this threat before it would take them out. However I don't know enough about Hank Pym's character, so I'll leave this here.
I also think it was naïve of Sif to tell him that Odin wouldn’t want him to destroy Earth. When Frigga died, Odin wanted to destroy all of the Dark Elves even if that meant the destruction of Asgard. I’m on the fence about whether Loki would have halted an attack at her council. They famously dislike each other and Loki and Odin are cut from similar cloths. Would he stand down if he was that angry? Or would he heed her words since, at this time, he so desperately sought Odin’s approval? It’s food for thought....

Loki Series Thoughts—Glorious Purpose
Ok, I’m always nervous about posting my thoughts, but here we go. Spoilers ahead of course!!! (Disclaimer: Any gifs or images are not mine.)
Let’s start out with the episode’s name: Glorious Purpose. I know some people were a bit miffed about the emphasis put on the line, but I actually thought it worked well. It’s not so much that Loki actually believes in this “purpose,” but rather he is clinging to what he’s been told his purpose is. And by the end of the episode, he’s finally working through some of the things he’s been hurt by, abandoning what he’s been forced into and ready to be who he wants. Granted, it’s still going to take some time for him to come to grips with all that has happened, but I’m excited to see the journey.
The TVA. They undeniably suck. Whether or not it will be addressed directly, they are the (or one of the) antagonists in the show. What they are doing is, frankly, tyrannical. Three “time keepers” have taken it upon themselves to force countless versions of time and people into one single stream. And you know what? They can’t control that timeline. Not like they want to. As much as Loki’s line about “the weak” applies to himself, it applies to the TVA, too. It’s a facade of control that they cling to; if they truly had the right, the ability, to control time, everyone would follow their path. There would be no variants. Now, I could write a whole separate analysis on the MCU’s explanation of time travel. It’s convoluted and in a large way doesn’t make sense.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’d like to talk about Loki’s characterization. I am, in a word, relieved. From the trailers, Tom seemed to be over-acting, something rather strange for someone so good at conveying deep emotions through nuanced actions. Now I believe any exaggerated lines from the trailers are just Loki trying to separate himself from who he’s been told he is, and trying to reinvent himself. I don’t think that’s a bad thing either; they’re not rewriting Loki, he’s just growing in a new way. And though this way is “new” I think it will be similar to what we’ve seen before. From what we’ve seen so far, there is good continuity, and they are addressing things about Loki that should be addressed in canon.
Loki projects. Most notably in the Avengers, but also a bit in Thor 1 and The Dark World, a lot of Loki’s lines can be applied to himself, though he is talking generally or towards another group. What comes to mind is actually something he touches upon again in the series. The illusion of freedom. And though it is not said that line in particular is him thinking of himself, it can be inferred based on his admission that the line in the gifs above apply to him. Also that little gesture when he says “weak” breaks me. He’s hurting so much.
Loki is not a villain. He may think he’s one because everyone else is telling him that, yet we’re already seeing it brought up that it’s not true. I can only hope that we’ll see Loki state this himself later in the series. He was largely forced to do what he did. It is not his fault, so how can he be a villain?
Loki cares. Tom’s acting is just *chef’s kiss* Seeing his mother’s death hurts so much. I love that his first response is denial. Loki is thrown into something he’s never known about before, being shown things that, to his knowledge, have never happened. But then when he’s had a few seconds to wander around the TVA on his own terms, he’s more come to grips with all that’s going on. So, when he’s by himself and see’s Frigga lying there, dead, it gets to him. Then seeing Odin still call him his son, he feels the slightest glimmer of hope, but also regret; he already knows in the back of his mind that he’s not actually going to get that. Loki’s living from second to second, trying to hold on. He probably thinks this ends with his death. (I do have issues with that Odin scene in context of Ragnarok but that’s more a tangential aside, so I’ll gloss over it for now.) Then seeing Thor and himself acting like brothers again is heartwarming. So just when he’s feeling uplifted, Thanos comes into the picture. He realizes how much control the titan still had over his life; he never really escaped. And in the end, Thanos made good on his promise. And that is terrifying! And he laughs at it. It’s a sad sort of laugh, one that’s slightly crazed. Loki feels that no matter what he does, it ends in pain. By the end of seeing all that, he is a man broken. Rather, more broken than he already was.
Loki is struggling. That’s nothing profound; it’s obvious. But where it really stands out to me is actually in a part I originally thought to be out of character. I am referring to “What if I was a robot and I didn’t know it.” Upon closer inspection, I realize it’s actually that his perception of himself has been so thrown that he really isn’t sure about his own chemical makeup anymore. Odin and Frigga keeping from him that he’s a frost giant made him so unsure of himself, he thought he might not even be a living being.
Nervous tics. Was I the only one noticing his leg bouncing when he talked to Mobius? And what about that scene when he’s sitting on the steps? He begins to pick at his hands. Note, that’s something he did in T1 after finding out he was a frost giant and while confessing to the Warriors Four about how he was the one who told the guard of their trip to Jotunheim. Just a little detail I really appreciated. (If anyone has gifs of any of these things, feel free to share :)
Tumblr media
Mobius. I’ll be honest, I’m a bit undecided. I’m hesitant to say he’s evil. After all, we haven’t seen that much of him yet. However, I will say he is unscrupulous and manipulative. His questions weren’t to help Loki work through his trauma. Mobius was trying to goad him into helping, and likely was trying to gauge how much this Loki is like the variant he’s tracking. When Loki makes any admission of his feelings, it’s something he already knew, not a conclusion Mobius helped him reach. Mobius mocks him a bit and pushes his buttons because he sees Loki as a means to an end, and wants to know how easily he can get him to work with him. And what strikes me is how similar Mobius’s deal is to Thor’s deal in TDW. Thor doesn’t offer Loki freedom, he offers revenge. Mobius’s deal is just another variation of this. He can’t offer “salvation” but he can offer something “better”. Working for the TVA really isn’t better, though. So what does he mean? Well, I think he means a chance for Loki to prove he’s a hero. I hope as the show progresses it’s addressed that Loki doesn’t have to prove himself to anyone. That’s what he’s been doing his whole life, but I want Loki to see for himself that he doesn’t have to.
Tumblr media
Miss Minutes. Propaganda. Plain and simple, it’s propaganda. Besides the way it praises the “time keepers” as amazing saviors, necessary to keep the world in order, it’s essentially saying “don’t think for yourself.” The whole point of the video is “the time keepers are great. The TVA is flawless. Trust us to decide everything. You have no autonomy in the world we want, so surrender your free will. Submit to the system we’ve decided is perfect and everything will be just fine.” Of course, by “just fine” they mean the variant will be pruned and the timeline will keep going as the time keepers see fit. The animation style was great though! It really fit.
The infinity stones. I think their inclusion makes sense. If you remember from Endgame, the stones being in the right place in the right time keeps the timeline from branching, and thus prevents the multiverse from being created. Likely, the time keepers used the stones to make their “sacred timeline.” Naturally, any variant time stones would cause a problem. That’s why they have so many extras. But think about how pointless so much of what happened seems. Nat, Gamora, Vision, Tony, everyone who was snapped, everyone who was left. So, literally the entire universe was flipped upside down for paperweights. It really puts Thanos’s pursuit of the stones into perspective, doesn’t it?
The cloaked figure. I think there’s some misdirection going on here in one way or another. Mobius says he’s chasing a Loki variant, then immediately it cuts to a scene with the cloaked figure. Our minds are likely to assume that is the variant then. But they don’t actually say it’s Loki, so I’m inclined to believe it’s not. Though, I don’t have enough information to say who I do think it is, I could make a couple of educated guesses and say Mephisto (he certainly interacted with Loki in the comics, plus there’s the stained glass window) or Sylvie. Well, whoever Sophia Di Martino’s character is. I know she was previously listed as Sylvie on sources such as IMDb, but that has since disappeared. But why would you have a “young Sylvie” (Cailey Fleming) without an older version? There is speculation Di Martino’s character will be Lady Loki, but I hope this won’t happen. If they make Lady Loki her own character, I doubt we’ll see Variant Loki get to be fluid. Even if it’s confirmed on the record, it’d be nice to see actually happen beyond a piece of paper. And with twist villains being such a prominent force in modern media, I’m interested to see who our cloaked friend really is.
Time travel. Like I said earlier, this is a lot. But I can’t talk about the episode and not mention this aspect in at least a little more depth. I don’t like how the MCU deals with time travel. I think it’s an unnecessarily complicated mix of a number of different, already complicated theories. However, I think Loki will ultimately escape from the TVA and create a multiverse too difficult to prune (and maybe he’ll actually get to burn the place down too!) This will then tie directly into Doctor Strange 2. Do you guys know what that’s called? The Multiverse of Madness. Actually, in the Miss Minutes propaganda, they almost exactly say “will throw the multiverse into madness.” Will we get to (finally!) see a certain raven-haired god meeting Dr. Strange? And maybe even the Scarlet Witch herself? Well, I’m not sure, but right now I think it’s looking pretty good!
And some random things that didn’t really anywhere else:
Peggy is in the background?! My thought here is that Steve wasn’t supposed to stay with her. This made not only a Variant Steve, but also a Variant Peggy. We may not see Steve, but I bet he’s been taken care of too!! And who knows? Maybe there will be a cameo later. Otherwise, it might be something that was cut from the show, or just a fun easter egg of sorts.
The score was so good! It sets the mood perfectly.
Loki is a good fighter. Even if he’s overpowered, he finds a way.
Some of the humor didn’t land, but that might just be a personal thing.
So now my final thoughts. It’s their strongest pilot yet. So much emotion crammed into less than an hour. A lot of exposition, too, yet it didn’t feel tedious (Endgame I’m looking at you). And then we get to delve into Loki’s psyche, something that really appeals to me! Overall, 9/10. I hope the rest of the series is as good!
Did I miss anything? Was there something you were hoping I’d mention and didn’t? Or do you have something to add or (politely!) disagree with? I’d love to hear it all! Remember, fandom is a safe space to talk about, analyze, and debate about things you enjoy. My ask box is always open with anon on. Reblogs and comments are great too. Thanks!

You’re My Bodyguard, Not My Owner. (Chapter 30) (Brendon Urie x Reader)
“Jameson?” Aaron offered, holding up the whiskey bottle for your view. When you declined, he asked if he could get you anything else.
“No, thank you. I’m good.”
“Just say if you need anything,” he said, crossing the room to seat himself on the sofa opposite from the one you were sitting on.
“The only thing I need is your help,” you chuckled, shifting backwards into a more comfortable position.
“Of course,” he sipped from his whiskey glass before setting it down on the coffee table midway between you two and extending a hand towards you, tilting his head, “Fire away. What do you need?”
“You’re an expert on Norse mythology, yes?”
“That I am,” he confirmed.
“What can you tell me about Asgard?”
The doctor hummed as he ran a hand over his mouth. “You want the summarised version or the one with all the trimmings?”
“I want to know everything.”
His lips twitched upwards. “Very well. So, according to Asgardian legend, in the beginning there was nothing, but in time, two worlds came into being on opposite sides of the void…”
Aaron continued to recount the entire history and lore of Asgard to you, who listened with extreme attentiveness and concentration. He told you about the creation of the first Frost Giant, Ymir, and the birth of Borr, who would later on father the three brothers Odin, Vili and Vé. He spoke of how the brothers slew Ymir, and created a home for themselves, calling it Asgard. And between the two worlds of Asgard and Midgard (earth), they stretched a rainbow bridge and called it Bifröst.
He explained how Odin came to be king, after his father and youngest brother Vé, died in battled, and how he and his only remaining brother Vili, fought as Asgard’s greatest warriors. Aaron explained what happened during the battle of Jotunheim, and how Odin came to adopt his son Loki, as well as come into possession of the Tesseract. He told you about the birth of Thor, as well as the appointment of Vili as the Protector of the Tesseract.
It was at that point that you interrupted.
“Vili,” you spoke, “what was he the god of?”
“Motivation.”
“And he was also the guardian of the Tesseract.”
“That’s correct.”
“And did he…” you drew in shaky breath, nervously wringing your fingers, “have any children? A… daughter, perhaps?”
“It’s not believed so, no,” was Aaron’s reply, and you felt your stomach drop as a vile concoction of relief as well as disappointment coursed through you.
“Although,” he continued a moment later, and you straightened up, “for a time, it was believed that when Vili descended to earth in pursuit of the Tesseract and when he decided to remain here, he adopted all the aspects of a regular, human life. Some believed that part of that was marrying a human and having a child.”
You swallowed, mouth suddenly dry. “And this child… they would be a demi-god?”
He nodded, taking a sip of his drink before frowning and snapping his fingers. “Hang on,” he stood up and crossed the room to one of his bags, “I think I might have something that could hold the answers you’re looking for. Ah,” he smiled when he found the ivory-coloured book and made his way back to the sofas, opting to sit next to you this time.
You gingerly took the book when he graciously held it out to you, setting it in your lap and running your fingers over the cover as you studied the various intricate designs and wording. You felt a twinge of déja vu; you were feeling the exact same way you had felt when you held your father’s journal. Except that this time, your hunger for answers was far more overpowering, and you opened the cover with ease.
Your eyes landed on a handwritten inscription at the top left corner of the title page, and you tilted your head to read the slanted writing.
“To the geekiest person I know,
I found this book extremely boring and stupid, so I knew that meant you would love it.
Happy birthday, Aaron. Stay weird.
From your older, cooler, and much better-looking cousin,
Ryan”
Aaron leaned closer to read it too, and chuckled. “Such a prick. It was a great present, though.”
“He sounds lovely,” you joked and Aaron gave a short laugh.
“He was, actually. He teased me tremendously, for being such a nerd; he was more into guitars and leather jackets and cigarettes. Typical rockstar stuff. We got along incredibly, though, despite not seeing much of each other. He was my best friend,” Aaron explained. As he spoke, you noticed a slight tremor starting to form in his voice, and an unmistakable glint of sadness in his eyes. You knew that look all too well, but didn’t comment on it. If he wanted to talk about it, he would.
So, you simply placed a gentle hand on his shoulder and squeezed lightly before asking what exactly you were supposed to look for in the book.
“Oh, right,” he cleared his throat and shifted closer, close enough for you to see the hint of stubble growing on his face, “Let’s see… I think it’s page, what was it? 45? 63? Ah, here it is. 57.”
Your gaze raked over the page. There wasn’t a lot of information, but what was there was definitely substantial.
“Skadi,” you read. Your skin broke out into goosebumps as flashes of your conversation with captured assassin crossed your mind. “Goddess of Winter… oh, my God.”
“She’s also the goddess of Justice, Vengeance, and Righteous Anger,” Aaron read from the page. When you didn’t respond, he looked up at you, a worrisome frown crossing his face as he took in your state.
You weren’t talking, your lips were trembling, and your skin pale, and he could see a semblance of tears forming in your eyes.
“(Y/N),” he reached out to grip your arms softly, “What’s wrong?”
Everything. Everything was wrong. The last hour had confirmed everything that The Asset had said to you, and as a result, confirmed that you had in fact been lied to for your entire life, by everyone in it.
Yes, Fury had confirmed it already, but you still held on to the tiniest bit of hope that it wasn’t true, that everything was made up. But now, there was no doubt about it.
And it wasn’t as if they were minor lies, either. They were lying about your identity. Your heritage. Who you are.
“This Skadi,” you croaked out, ignoring the doctor’s question regarding your well being, “she has powers, right?”
“That would be the case, yes.”
“And these powers…” you sighed, taking a moment to close your eyes and compose yourself. There was no more room left for crying, or feeling sorry for yourself; you needed to familiarise yourself with all of this as much as you could, as fast as you could. You turned to face the doctor, face hard. “Alright, let’s assume that all of those rumours were true, and that Vili really did start a family here on earth.”
“Okay.”
“Vili would want to protect his daughter at all costs, like any parent would. So he’d hide her powers from her. Or at least, turn them dormant.”
“Uh huh.”
“But let’s say that earth is facing a huge threat, and the only way to stop said threat, would be for Skadi to fight… how would she activate her powers?”
“(Y/N)?”
“Yes?”
“What are you talking about?”
“Nothing,” you sighed, slightly aggravated, “It’s all hypothetical, Aaron. Please just… indulge me.”
Still a bit unsure, Aaron slowly shook his head. “All hypothetical…right. Well, there’s not really a textbook answer to your question, (Y/N).”
“Okay, so don’t give me a textbook answer. Give me yours. You’re the expert here. What do you think?”
Aaron chuckled awkwardly, but upon seeing your stern expression, he knew that you weren’t fooling around. You were absolutely serious.
“I think…” he started, his expression turning stern too, “that Vili wouldn’t have hidden his daughter’s powers without leaving her a clue as to how to find them again. He was one of the greatest warriors the universe had ever seen; he knew how important her abilities would be – how powerful she would become – and he undoubtedly knew that one day she would have to defend. Be it this world, or any other.”
You nodded along slowly, taking in every word. “So you think he left her a clue?”
“I’d bet everything on it.”
“Huh,” you ran your tongue along the inside of your cheek, stretching your hands out to your knees as Aaron continued to study your motions, searching for some kind of enlightenment as to you what exactly you were thinking.
“(Y/N), based on your reaction to what we’ve been discussing…” he stalled his speech for a moment, taking the opportunity to consider how to go about his question. He wasn’t someone who was easily confused, yet this situation left him completely befuddled. “I can’t help but feel that your questions are not hypothetical. Is there… What’s going on?”
Groaning, you lifted one hand to pinch the bridge of your nose. “Aaron,” you muttered, “I’d love to tell you. I really would. But not even I am sure of what’s going on. All I know is that it’s very, very complicated. Besides, even if I did know, I probably wouldn’t tell you. And I mean no offense to you by that, but it’s just that there’s no one I trust right now.”
“I understand that,” he nodded, “I apologise; I didn’t mean to pry. It’s simply that you seem quite upset over this – whatever it is – and I would’ve liked to have helped you with that.”
“You have helped, believe me.”
He smiled a warm, genuine smile. “I’m glad. Know that even though you might not trust me, you can. I assure you that I am totally impartial in this situation.”
“You have to be,” you scoffed in amusement, “You have no idea what’s going on.”
“Precisely,” he beamed, eyes twinkling.
You opened your mouth to reply, but didn’t get the chance to, since the door to Aaron’s suite swung open, hitting the wall with a deafening bang. And in the doorway stood none other than…
“Brendon?” you asked in disbelief, eyes narrowing as you took in the sight before you.
Your bodyguard stood painfully straight as his cold glare settled itself on you and the doctor. His hair was messy and windswept, telling you that he must’ve arrived in a chopper. As always, his body language radiated exactly what he was feeling – anger. Lots of it.
The muscles in his jaw twitched as he fixed his eyes on Aaron, and amazingly, his gaze hardened even more.
“What,” he started, voice calm but as sharp and cold as an icicle, as he took slow, threatening steps forward, “did I say,” he flexed his fingers, “would happen if you ever touched her again?”
Aaron’s eyes got bigger and his mouth fell open as he tried to respond, but couldn’t; much like Corvey, he faltered under Brendon’s aura. It was remarkable, really, how Brendon could do that. Make even a man as charming and influential as Doctor Aaron Ross succumb under his gaze.
“Brendon,” you spoke, trying to avert the attention from the man sitting next to you.
“Did you forget?” Brendon pressed, ignoring you as he continued to advance on Aaron, “’Cause I’d be more than happy to refresh your memory.”
“Brendon!” you raised your voice and stood up this time, blocking the doctor from your bodyguard’s view. “Stop it.”
Upon making eye contact with you for the first time in a couple days, the usual layer of ice in his eyes was replaced with a raging fire.
“You. What the fuck is wrong with you?”
You frowned, scoffing at the question. “What the fuck is wrong with me?”
“Yes! Do you have any idea the amount of panic and disruption you’ve caused? Fuck, (Y/N). Fury has been worried out of his mind, and I…” he broke his gaze, looking to the side and shaking his head before turning back to you, “I’ve been looking all over for you. I haven’t slept in two days because I’ve been hopping around the entire fucking country trying to find you.”
“Hopping? You should try flying,” you sassed, cocking one brow, “It’s way faster.”
“Fuck, (Y/N)!” he barked, anger building, “This isn’t a fucking joke! I thought you were dead, damn it!”
“So what? What would it matter if I were dead? In fact, it would only benefit you – you wouldn’t have to babysit me anymore. You don’t care about me. You never did. That was proven a long time ago. So don’t try and make me feel guilty when I know that you don’t even really give a shit.”
Next thing you knew, Brendon had pulled you to him, one hand holding your left arm in an iron grip, and the other cupping the right side of your face. You could feel him against you; his breathing was dangerously ragged.
“I…” he started, eyes boring into yours. He drew in a sharp breath. “I’m here now. I found you, and I’m not leaving without you.”
“I…” it was your turn to falter and inhale deeply. You closed your eyes and shook your head lightly as you shoved him away. “I’m not going anywhere with you.”
His jaw clenched. “Yes, you are.”
“She said she’s not going with you,” Aaron found his courage, steeling his gaze and rising from his seat to move beside you. “I think you should leave.”
“Oh, you’ve gotta be kidding me,” Brendon chuckled bitterly, taking a step back as he looked between you and the Brit. “(Y/N), you can’t actually be serious.” He looked at you hopelessly. “You’re gonna chose to stay with him rather than come with me? You know nothing about him! He can’t be trusted!”
“Neither can you,” you retorted. “In fact, Aaron has been more truthful to me in two hours than you have been in almost a year.”
“Oh come on!” he groaned, accentuating every word, “I was fucking protecting you!”
“Well maybe I don’t need you to protect me!” you yelled back, “Did you ever think about that?”
There was the sound of glass shattering, and a small gas cylinder rolled onto the carpet next to you, releasing an invisible gas.
The last thing you heard before blacking out was Brendon calling out your name.

Stand By You
Pairing: Loki x Reader
Summary: Based off of Stand By You by Rachel Platten
Requested: yeah @hiddlestoner3059 (Hey if u take request then can u pls do a lokixreader on song 'stand by u' by rachel platten ..may be a little fluff on avengers tower a little shock, cuteness, and yeah pls try them with ice skating..i love' welcome')
Hands, put your empty hands in mine
And scars—show me all the scars you hide
And hey, if your wings are broken
Please take mine so yours can open, too
'Cause I'm gonna stand by you
The Avengers had yet to find out about Loki and I. The two of us had been dating for a couple of months and, while we hadn’t intended for it to be a secret, I also knew that Loki was grateful that we had had some time to ourselves before everyone found out.
The tower was quiet, everyone off doing their own separate things. Bucky and Steve were almost certainly training, Tony and Bruce would be in the labs. As for the rest of them, they were not as easy to tell. They were not as stuck to a schedule.
Loki and I were watching a film in his quarters. He had not been as keen on the idea at first but I had told him that it was one that I had wanted to see for a while and so he grudgingly agreed to it. My head was on his lap and I was curled up into a ball with my eyes fixed on the screen, completely invested in the film. Loki’s hands were playing with my hair and I got the impression that, despite all of his words of protest, he, too, was enjoying the film.
“Brother, I don’t suppose you have seen-” Thor’s voice stops as he walks into the room and sees the position that myself and his brother are in. I tear my gaze away from the screen and look at the blonde God, feeling my face flush in embarrassment.
“Most people knock, brother,” Loki’s voice is mild and he doesn’t stop his hands from playing with my hair.
“I... didn’t realise you had company,” Thor responds, clearly working out how to talk again.
“Well I do. I was trying to watch a film with my girlfriend before you interrupted. What was it you wanted?” Loki was clearly impatient.
“Girlfriend?” Thor echoes the word looking mildly stunned.
“Well?” Loki presses, not even being discreet about his annoyance over Thor’s presence. I scowl at the God of Mischief.
“Don’t be mean,” I tell him and then look at Thor. “Who were you looking for?” I question. Thor seems to recover slightly.
“I was looking for you, actually,” there’s still a slight frown on his face but it seems to be slowly disappearing to be replaced with a slight smirk. I go to move off of Loki’s lap but he doesn’t let me.
“Loki, let me up,” I laugh, looking up at him. The God sighs and removes his hands from my hair, allowing me to sit up. I peck his lips quickly and follow Thor out of the room.
“I was told to tell you that you have a debrief at nine tomorrow,” Thor says and I nod.
“I’ll set an alarm. Thanks, Thor,” I smile and he nods but puts a hand on my shoulder to stop me from turning back into the room.
“How long has that been going on?” He questions and I shrug.
“Couple of months,” Thor nods slowly but doesn’t remove his hands from my shoulder.
“Be careful, Lady Y/N. I know my brother better than anyone. As much as I want to trust him, he is not known for loyalty,” I just shake my head, a small smile on my face.
“You said it yourself, Thor. He’s changed and I trust him, even if no one else does,”
“Be careful, alright?” Thor questions and his gaze moves to over my shoulder and he seems to freeze a little.
“Brother,” Loki’s voice is cold and I don’t need to turn around to know the cold, relentless glare that he’s giving the God of Thunder.
“I don’t need to be careful, Thor,” I tell him and turn around, taking Loki’s hand and leading him back into his room.
Oh, tears make kaleidoscopes in your eyes
And hurt, I know you're hurting, but so am I
And, love, if your wings are broken
Borrow mine 'til yours can open, too
'Cause I'm gonna stand by you
“Loki?” I question quietly. I knew that Thor’s words had struck a nerve inside of the God, even if he would never admit to it.
Loki doesn’t respond other than by pulling me into a hug, burying his face into the crook of my neck.
“It’s okay, love,” I murmur and Loki lets out a shaky breath, pulling away but keeping my trapped in his arms as he watched me. I could see the tears in his eyes. He would never allow them to fall around me or anyone else. “He’s just wary of you and wants to look out for me,” I brush a strand of his long black hair out of his face and smile. “I don’t need him too, though. I’ve beaten Captain fucking America in a fight,” Loki lets out a low chuckle.
“You sound proud,”
“Not everyone can say that they’ve punched a super solider in the face. I’ve punched two of them,” Loki rolls his eyes and my smile softens, pulling his face down gently so that his lips meet mine.
“I love you,” he murmurs as we break away. Loki was not normally one for affectionate words unless he was tired or drunk and so that was how I knew just how much Thor’s harsh words really had hit him.
“I love you too,” I say, just as the door bursts open to reveal some of my best friends. Wanda, Bucky and Sam laugh in delight at it and Peter and Steve look away uncomfortably. I groan, placing my head on Loki’s chest who seems to stiffen under the eyes of the other Avengers.
“So it is true!” Sam exclaims, coming into the room and pulling the two of us apart. He stands in front of Loki. There’s a smile on his face but anyone could see the underlying distrust in it. “You better not fuck up, Laufeyson,” he says, clapping Loki on the shoulder. I roll my eyes and shove Sam.
“Fuck off, Sam,” I say, “you’re not my brother,”
“Sure I am,” he says, putting me in a headlock. I laugh and struggle, trying to get out of it but he holds me in it. “Look, man, I want to trust you. I do,” he says to Loki and I manage to look up and see Loki looking at the floor, jaw clenched. “And I tend to trust whoever Y/N says is good and you haven’t done anything wrong in the past half a year since you got here so I’m going to assume you’re good,” I push Sam’s side, wanting to get out of the headlock. He lets go and I stumble away from him, scowling.
“I hate you,” I say but he doesn’t even spare me a look.
“But Y/N is like a sister to me, alright. If you fuck up or hurt her in any way, you won’t be leaving this compound alive,” for the first time in my life, I feel mildly intimidated by my best friend.
“I’m not scared of your bird costume, Wilson,” Loki responds, looking at my best friend who lets out a wry chuckle, taking a step forwards. Steve puts his hand on Sam’s shoulder, stopping him from getting any closer to the God of Mischief.
Bucky puts his metal hand on mine too, trying to ensure that I’d stay out of it.
“For the record, Y/L/N, I think you’re right,” Bucky murmurs to me and I grin, putting an arm around Bucky’s waist and giving him a side hug. “Though, I am with Wilson. I won’t hesitate to hurt him if he hurts you,” I roll my eyes at my best friends protective tone.
Bucky, Sam and Steve had been like this ever since they had rescued me from a Hydra base about a year ago. They seemed to look upon me as their responsibility and insisted on teaching me self-defence and making sure that I never went on a mission without at least one of them.
“Maybe you could take me, Loki, but could you take me, two super soldiers, a witch and some spider dude?” Sam asks. I step forwards and stand next to Loki.
“He’s not going to hurt me, Sam,” I say, locking my fingers in with Loki’s. Loki squeezes my hand in recognition and I smile at the action, feeling my face blush. Sam studies us for a couple more seconds before nodding, leaving the room. I turn to Loki with a smile.
“Your friends are too protective,” he states, looking unimpressed. I shrug.
“Probably something to do with being Avengers,” Loki just nods, resting his chin on my head. “You know I’m not going to leave you right?” He gives a minute nod and I can tell that, even if he doesn’t let on, he appreciates the confirmation. “Come on, lets go out,”
Yeah, you're all I never knew I needed
And the heart—sometimes it's unclear why it's beating
And, love, if your wings are broken
We can brave through those emotions, too
'Cause I'm gonna stand by you
“Ice skating?” He questions, gloved fingers still laced in mine. I grin and nod.
“Come on, Loki, it’ll be fun!” I insist. Loki sighs and nods. Despite his outward irritation, I can see his lips curling into a smile.
I lace up my skates and watch as Loki does the same before I hold my hand out again. When I was younger, my family and I would go ice skating every weekend. That was until my mum died then the trips to the rink would become less frequent. My sister still went every weekend, wanting to fulfil her dream of becoming a professional ice skater. She would take me with her every now and then but I rarely got to go on the ice.
I relay the story to Loki excitedly as I drag him towards the rink and the God of Mischief chuckles adoringly. After hearing my love for ice skating he seemed to become less reluctant to come on with me.
“Did she ever make it?” He questions as I take a step on. I raise my eyebrows at him in question. “Your sister. Did she ever become a professional?” Loki clarifies.
“Applied for the Winter Olympics once. Got in, almost won but then got knocked out right at the last second and broke her ankle. She hasn’t been the same since,” I tell him and I can’t help the swell of pride in my chest that always came when I thought about her.
The two of us skated and it mostly consisted of me pulling Loki around.
“You know, for a frost giant you’re surprisingly bad at ice skating,” I grin, my comment makes Loki laugh and pull me towards him on the ice, pressing a cold kiss against my lips.
“I’m so glad I have you,” he says and I try to bite back my grin.
“You’re so cheesy sometimes,” I murmur, kissing him again.
“Only for you. The rest of the time I’m planning to take over the world,” he jokes.
“I hope you’re not. Not after assuring Sam, Bucky and Steve that you’ve changed,” I chuckle. His grip around me tightens as we continue to skate slowly around the almost-empty rink.
“I have changed and I love you for seeing that I have,” his voice is low in my ear and the warmth of his breath causes goosebumps to form on my skin.
“I love you for letting me help,”
Oh, truth—I guess truth is what you believe in
And faith—I think faith is having a reason
And I know now, love, if your wings are broken
Borrow mine 'til yours can open, too
'Cause I'm gonna stand by you
Dinner at the tower on a Sunday was always a social occasion. We’d take turns each week cooking and every week we would gather together in the dining room to eat it. This week was Sam’s week and he was everyone’s favourite chef, as a result of him being one of the few of us who could actually cook.
So, naturally, the second that Sam called us for dinner, everyone was immediately found racing towards the dining room. Loki and I walked in and took seats next to each other and the room fell silent watching us.
I could feel myself becoming nervous at the feel of their intrusive looks. The only people who didn’t have their eyes on us were the two super soldiers, Sam, Thor and Wanda, having already had the conversation about us with them.
Loki could clearly see my worry and placed his hand on my thigh, palm up in the air. I slid my hand into his, feeling myself relax as he squeezed it.
“So you guys are fucking,” Tony finally breaks the uncomfortable silence. Everyone’s gaze shifts to him with mildly disgusted expressions on their face.
“Dude,”
“What? I’m just asking what everyone’s thinking,” he shrugs, defending himself.
“You could, like, not?” Wanda suggests and with that, the tension around the table is broken and things seem to return to normal, Loki and I only receiving the occasional glance during breaks in conversation.
As dinner comes to a close, I begin to clear the table, it being my week to clean the dishes. Steve was on duty with me. I washed them and he dried.
“You really trust him then?” He finally asks and I nod.
“Of course I do, Steve. He’s telling the truth about changing,” I sigh, tired of repeating the same thing over and over again.
“Y/N... truth is just what you believe in, alright? Just because you believe in him doesn’t mean that it’s the truth,” Steve tells me gently, taking another plate from my hands.
“Well maybe you don’t need to believe in him,” I say, “maybe you can just believe in me? You always have before,” I suggest to my best friend. Steve looks at me for a moment, putting the plate away.
“I have faith in you because you’ve given me reasons to and that’s why I believe in you and always have. Loki... he’s never given me a reason,”
“Maybe that’s because you’ve never let him,” I offer and Steve gives a humourless laugh. “Look, Steve, you’re one of the closest things I have ever had to a brother and, the thing is, as much as I value your opinion and want your acceptance, I know you’re wrong here and I’m going to stand by Loki no matter what because I love him,” Steve watches me as I wash up the final pan, leaving it to drip dry. “And if you love me then you’ll give him a chance,”
I'll be your eyes 'til yours can shine
And I'll be your arms, I'll be your steady satellite
And when you can't rise, well, I'll crawl with you on hands and knees
'Cause I... I'm gonna stand by you
“I heard what you said to Steve,” Loki appears in my room just as I finished getting changed.
“Give a girl some warning,” I smile, going over and kissing him. He kisses back, hugging me tight to his chest.
“Thank you for that,” he murmurs and I shrug.
“I’ll make them accept you, Loki,” I assure him, “and, until they do, I’ll make you feel welcome on behalf of them all,” He laughs at my promise and kisses me lightly in what feels like thanks
“The metal arm one-”
“Bucky, I think you mean. You know, if you want to be accepted, learning their names may help with that,” I tease Loki, taking a drink from the glass of water that’s on my night stand.
“Right. Bucky. He invited me to go out for drink with him, Thor and the other two tomorrow,”
“That’s good, Loki!” I assure him. “You said yes right?”
“I asked whether Steve and Sam wanted me there,”
“What did he say?”
“He said that you would,” I smile at that.
“You should go,” Loki furrows his eyebrows, unsure. “You’ll like Bucky. He’s funny. And Steve promised to give you a chance, too,”
“Okay, I’ll go,” he concedes, pulling me by the arm and kissing me again. “Thank you for everything, Y/N,” he murmurs quietly, our lips only a couple of centimetres apart. I wind my arms around his neck, smiling.
“I’ll always stand by you,”
I hope that this was kind of what you wanted? Sorry, I haven’t written much for Loki before :)

Nine Realms Completely in Chaos
No! I refuse! You can’t make me talk about this agai-
Tumblr media
Hi guys! Today I’m going to talk about this again:
Thor: ...I decide to go out there and investigate. And what do I find, but the Nine Realms completely in chaos.
In all seriousness, I want to address this line mostly without touching on the context of imperialism. Even when you ignore that context, analyzing this line exposes a problem I have with the worldbuilding.
Let’s begin by talking a bit about the Nine Realms, and where they’re at when Thor: Ragnarok begins.
Asgard: It’s rebuilt after the events of TDW. It looks to be prospering.
Muspelheim: It’s population (fire demons, I guess) has just been attacked by Thor. Down one ruler (tsk tsk Thor power vacuums cause chaos) and one dragon. Seemed fine prior to that.
Svartalfheim: It’s likely to still be ruins. If any dark elves remain alive after TDW, they’re severely endangered. Doubt Thor cares (he never did before).
Jotunheim: It’s unknown what the frost giants have been doing since Thor, but I think it’s safe to assume that they still don’t like Asgard (for good reasons) and the planet is still in ruins. None of these problems began after Loki’s rein. The blame for the planet’s devastation can’t even be entirely blamed on Loki. Thor shows us that it’s a mess prior to his attempted genocide. Also, doubt Thor cares (he never did before).
Niflheim: Does anything live here? We’ve no canon information on Niflheim in the MCU besides knowing that’s where Hel is and Hela was imprisoned there. If we take our answer from the comics, then not really.
Midgard: Falling apart, but when is it not? I doubt Loki sending in an army would have fixed/prevented anything that happened in any of the MCU movies set after TDW. Also, Loki did send Sif to help on multiple occasions.
Vanaheim: Why doesn’t Vanaheim have an army to defend itself? I’m serious, why does Vanaheim need Asgard’s help? Hogun is Vanir and he’d one of Asgard’s finest warriors. The Vanir are as powerful as Asgardians in the MCU. Could be in chaos, but why can’t Vanaheim defend itself?
Nidavellir: Could be in chaos. Might be fighting rock trolls. I guess rock trolls are more powerful then dwarves?
Alfheim: Could be in chaos. We don’t know anything about the light elves of who their enemies might be.
So we have three Realms potentially in chaos, excluding those that seem fine, have little to no population, and/or that had problems pre-Thor that Asgard never helped with. One of those, at least, doesn’t seem like it should need Asgard’s help, but apparently does.
Let’s circle back to Midgard. Allow me to repeat what I said for your convenience: I doubt Loki sending in an army would have fixed/prevented anything that happened in any of the MCU movies set after TDW. This isn’t because there weren’t conflicts. The movies we have are evidence of all those conflicts. In AoU, we watch the Avengers battle an army of robots lead by a super AI. However, you’ve probably never once thought, not even after watching Ragnarok, “Fuck Loki for not sending an army to help! How lazy!” You don’t think that because it would be absurd to. Armies don’t solve everything (the devastation of Sokovia wouldn’t have been prevented by a group of Einherjar marching through), and, most importantly, the humans are shown to be capable of solving their own problems.
Proper worldbuilding is vital. Midgard is fully fleshed out. It enjoys the benefit of being our world, so we fill in any gaps the movie doesn’t have time to cover. It’s also where we spend the most time. Most characters in the MCU are humans. The other Realms don’t have that going for them. Vanaheim, Nidavellir, and Alfheim are not fleshed out. We’ve only glimpsed two of them (one in TDW, one in a comic pre-TDW). We’re left to wonder then why they need Asgard’s army to protect them. Why are stronger beings more incapable of keeping themselves safe than the humans? After Ragnarok, we’ve got a possible reason, but the movie doesn’t make it explicit, and I doubt it even meant to imply. So this line just confuses and annoys me, and I’m really sick of seeing it on my dash and in fics. Explain the politics to me. Please, just fucking explain. I will accept canon that confirms Loki’s a lazy piece of shit so long as you justify why Asgard’s protection is necessary. I just want the Nine Realms to make sense! Even fantasy has to make sense!
Finally, I watched Thor: The Dark World again. Guess what I’d forgotten:
Odin: Is Vanaheim secure? Thor: As are Nornheim and Ria. Though our work would have gone more quickly with you at the fore. Odin: You must think I'm a piece of bread that needs to be buttered so heavily. Thor: That was not my intent. Odin: For the first time since the Bifrost was destroyed, the Nine Realms are at peace. They're well reminded of our strength and you have earned their respect and my gratitude.
First, Nornheim and Ria aren’t even part of the Nine Realms, but they’re apparently under Asgard’s protection. Not sure what to make of that. More worlds with no development that just exist and we should believe that they’re in trouble without Asgard. Great. Interesting tidbit: Ria is the homeworld of the Kronan (in the comics, at least, but most likely this holds true in the MCU based on the glimpse we get of it), and Korg mentions he tried to start a revolution. Do you see what I’m getting at?
Second, Thor says their work would have been quicker with Odin’s help. This implies, if the movie hadn’t already made it explicit enough, that Asgardian protection just means you get an army dumped on you from time to time. It doesn’t mean they’re going to help you rebuild, which I’d argue is much more important.
Third, what the fuck? “They’re well reminded of our strength...”?
I get why Taika Waititi thought imperialism fit Asgard well, even if I don’t think Ragnarok did a good job actually condemning the long term manifestation of imperialism.

An Eye for an Eye
“Loki’s sentence for the attempted subjugation of Midgard is to be death. We will hold a trial tomorrow morning.”
Your gasp is swallowed by the scrape of chairs as the council rises. You duck further behind a pillar as Odin and the rest stream past. You wait till they’ve left, then creep out. The Einherjar pay you no mind as you make your way back to your rooms.
You lay awake. When the watch calls midnight, you roll out of bed, and fetch your robe. Taking a candle, you hurry out of your rooms, directing your soft footsteps to the library.
You read and read, learning as much as you can about spells of control and torture. And Thanos. You read about Thanos, and the Chiutari.
Sunlight streams through the library windows as you put out your candle and return to your rooms to dress.
The trial commences as the watch calls the tenth hour of the morning.
You watch, fear coursing through your veins, as Loki is lead to the dais, chains on his every limb. He doesn’t meet your eyes as he passes.
“Loki, son of Laufey, you stand accused of the attempted subjugation of Midgard and the destruction of the city of New York. How plead you?”
Before you can second guess yourself, you step out of the crowd. “Not guilty.”
The crowd murmurs with confusion, and Odin looks at you, annoyed. “What?”
“Not guilty.” You gulp, gathering your courage. “I made him do it.”
Loki gasps, turning toward you. “No!”
“And how would you, a simple maiden of Asgard, force a frost giant with extraordinary magical power into doing anything, let alone something so large?”
“A combination of systemic psychological and physical torture, solitary confinement, emotional abuse, and the tesseract.”
The crowd begins to draw back. You can hear the Einherjar loosening swords in sheathes.
You knew you would have to fight, or it wouldn’t be believable. You prepare yourself, shifting your stance slightly, spreading your feet apart. Finally, you send something to Loki, a simple communication spell. “Just let me do this. Tell about Thanos’ torture of you.”
Odin turns to Loki. “Is this true?”
Loki looks terrified. You sigh slightly, then whisper “I’m sorry.”
A control spell strikes him without warning. With his chains binding his seidr fast, he’s unable to shake it. He nods. You can feel him screaming for you to stop. His hands are shaking, you know in anger. Let everyone else assume it is in fear. Fear of you.
Odin rises, his single eye terrible. “Seize her!”
You lash out, flinging blue magic, knives solidify in midair, slashing toward the Einherjar. You cringe inwardly as one strikes a guard in the heart.
You make a shield as a sword slices next to your ear, morphing it into a blade as you slash back at your attacker.
Suddenly, bands of golden fire form in the air around you, tightening, clamping your arms to your sides, halting your magic and your body both in their tracks. Frigga stands beside the throne, hands raised, glimmering golden, eyes flinty, a cold smile on her lips.
The guards approach cautiously, half expecting you to attack somehow, despite Frigga’s hold on you. You feel the manacles close around your wrist, binding your magic as well as your body.
As you are shuffled off to the dungeon, you turn around, craning your neck towards Loki. His face is a mask, horror etched in his immobile features. Only his eyes show differently. There is anger there, fury that you would do something so reckless for him. But it is overshadowed by an undeniable tenderness that cuts you to the bone, more than the horror or the anger or even the desolation in his skin.
You turn back around, clutching at that tenderness. Hardening it, sharpening it, hardening yourself, sharpening yourself. Prepared.
They shove you in a cell. You hear the lock slide home.
Now that you are alone, you let go. Tears fall fast, sobs tearing through you.
It sinks in as you weep.
You are going to die.
The cell is well guarded, not by men, there are no Einherjar in the hall. But magic gleams in the walls and vast windows of the cell. Einherjar are not needed.
You hear people coming and gulp, rushing to the mirror hanging on one wall. Surprisingly, no trace of tears show.
You stand before the glass, awaiting your visitor, presumably Odin.
Five Einherjar surround them, but when you do finally catch a glimpse of green, you stumble back.
Loki.
He halts in front of your cell. “Leave us,” he snaps at the guards.
“But, my prince-” one begins.
“She is in a cage. I have my magic. You think I cannot take her? I said, leave us.”
The Einherjar bow and leave leaving the corridor empty.
Loki rushes forward, pressing his hand against the barrier, your fingers mirroring his. You imagine you can feel the warmth of his skin.
“What has possessed you, love? Why would you do such a thing?” Anger glints in Loki’s eyes, sheathed in a softness that cuts to your soul.
“I couldn’t watch you executed. I couldn’t just stand aside and watch it happen.”
“But now I will have to watch you die, and know that it is my fault. That I brought this upon you.” His eyes begin to glisten, tears shimmering against the green of his irises.
“It isn’t your fault, Loki. I made the choice.” You smile softly, glancing to the clean, white, floor. “I decided that you should live.”
“But why? You are good, you are kind and lovely. I am a killer, a monster. I don’t deserve this chance you have given me.”
“I, too, am a killer. I, too, am a monster. I killed two guards in the great hall. I would have killed more, if I had to. I would have to save you. Because, whatever you might think, you do not deserve to die in shame. You deserve to live and heal and remake yourself.”
“And you don’t? You do deserve to die in shame, a torturer, traitor, killer? You deserve this?”
“More than you. I am of no importance, Loki. I am a servant, a concubine. The galaxy will go on without me. The universe will need you yet. Asgard will need you yet.”
Loki is well and truly crying, tears rolling over his high cheekbones, dropping off his aquiline nose. You find yourself joining him.
“But I need you. I will need you yet. You keep me right, more than anything. Sometimes, in a moment of clarity, I would think of you. Something would remind me of you, and the sceptre’s hold on me would loosen, Thanos’ power would wane, only for a moment. At the end, when that great green thing knocked me about, knocked Thanos out of my head for good, you were the first thing I thought of. How ashamed you would be of me. How disgusted. And then I was brought back, and you didn’t come to my cell, and I felt my worst suspicions had been confirmed. I thought you hated me. At my trial, you were there, and I couldn’t meet your eyes. But then you stepped forward and took the blame upon yourself and I knew you didn’t hate me but it was far, far too late. And my chains bound my seidr, I could not fight any magic you threw at me and you made me go along, made me convict you. I hate myself. I feel a traitor, more one than I did before.” You are both on the floor down now, heads leaning against one another, only the cell wall separating you.
“I know, Loki. But I made you. You can’t ever forget that I forced you to do it, because that means it wasn’t your fault. Just as Midgard wasn’t your fault. You were tortured and controlled, too weak to fight. You are not at fault here. I am. I made the choice to save you, I made the choice to kill those guards. Their deaths are on my account and mine alone. Remember that.”
“I don’t think I can ever forget it.”
Now, more than ever, you ache to touch him. To hold him, kiss him, to know, again, his body.
To reassure yourself. He is here. He is alive. He is real.
“They will make me go. They will make me watch. They will expect me to enjoy it, to be relieved. I don’t know how. I do not know how to make them believe that I am afraid of you. That I hate you.”
“I wish I could touch you.” Your voice is small, weak, even to your own ears. “I wish I could feel you against me, one final time. To know you, once more.”
And you break, sobbing, doubled over, sobs wracking your frame. Tears soak your torn skirt, and Loki looks on helplessly, wishing, more than anything that he could comfort you. Hold you and stroke your hair and soothe you.
After a time, you here the Einherjar returning. You take a deep breath, steadying yourself, and cast an illusion to make it appear that you are standing, with your back to Loki. Loki stands, too, casting minor illusions to make it appear that he has not just been sobbing on the floor of the dungeons. The guards round the corner, and Loki turns back to you. “Good bye, my love,” he whispers. Then he turns and goes with the Einherjar, with not a backwards glance. _______________________________________
You awake to a guard banging on your cell wall.
“Oi, you, get up! It’s time.”
He tosses a gown and slippers in, followed by breakfast, slid through a gate in the magic.
You dress, then eat. Once you finish, you go to the door, where a full escort of guards awaits, chains in hand. You do not fight, allowing them to bind you, body and magic. You walk with your head high, certain, unyielding, unashamed. You are in the right, whatever the rest might think.
The halls seem longer, with everyone staring so. You never falter, though. Never glance down. Never waiver.
The throne room is packed, full. People jeer, shout obscenities. Odin sits on the throne, watching you approach him, brazen with your head held high, his single eye cold. When you reach the foot of the stairs, he pounds Gugnir into the floor for silence. A hush falls.
“Maid Y/N of Asgard, you stand accused of torture, murder, treason, and the attempted subjugation of Midgard. How plead you?”
“Guilty, Allfather.”
“Have you any defence to offer?”
“None, Allfather.”
“Then, I, Odin, rightful king of Asgard and keeper of the nine realms, sentence you to die. This sentence is to be carried out immediately. Guards!”
Two more men appear, taking you by the shoulders, leading you away, out of the throne room and down the halls. You know where you are headed. Beheadings are always a spectator sport. You will have an audience.
The room is filling as you enter, people filing in after you. You are taken to the dais, the executioner standing away, axe gleaming in the silken lamplight. The bloodgrooves cut into the floor form a pattern you cannot describe, but feels beautiful and sinister. And then, finally, there is Loki. Dressed in black, sombre-faced and hollow-eyed, he walks to the front of the room, standing beside his family. You can see the control spell you planted on him in the dungeons beginning to wear off, and the lucidity slowly returning to his eyes. Too slowly. He won’t be able to stop this.
Once everyone has stopped pushing, one of the guards reads off your charges and sentence again. The desperation is in Loki’s eyes, he is trying to fight it. He can’t.
One guard places a hand on your shoulder, forcing you to your knees. You keep your shoulders back, head high, jaw set. No fear can show. No weakness can slip through.
One of the guards places your head on the block, a great slab of black stone, hatched from years of death, stained with blood. It smells like iron. The executioner steps forward, raising his axe, a great ugly thing like a crescent moon. It gleams like oil.
You hear the whistle of it as it descends, feel and sharp slice of blinding pain, and then, nothing. _______________________________________
Loki hates you, in that moment. He didn’t notice the spell you had wrapped around him until it was too late, until it had dug its claws into his mind so that he could not shake it loose.
Only now, as your charges were read, could he feel its grip slipping, loosening. But he still couldn’t shake it. Not far enough to stop this.
His mind screams as you are forced to your knees, back straight, your face pressed into the block, still beautiful, despite everything. Still proud. Still so bedamned stubborn.
He begins to shake as the executioner raises his axe over you, rage and futility and devastation.
The whistle of the axe silences the crowd, silences everything. To Loki, it is the loudest sound in the world. Until he hears it sever your neck in two. Until he hears your head roll away, thumping to the floor. _______________________________________
Thor find Loki in his rooms, huddled on his bed, shaking. He goes to him, laying an arm across his shoulders.
“What ails you, brother?”
“Her.”
“She is gone. She cannot hurt you.”
“She can.” Loki huddles closer to himself. “You don’t understand. She was innocent. I was tortured, but not by her. Never by her.”
“What?” Thor is incredulous, shocked. “What are you saying, brother?”
“She gave her life for me. She told father she was in league with Thanos to spare me. She took my place. I can never forgive myself.”
“Why didn’t you stop her?”
“Do think I wouldn’t have? She put a control spell on me, forced me to watch her die and not do a thing about it.”
“She killed two men.”
“I know she killed two men. She did it for me. To save me. She made certain that even if Odin didn’t quite believe she was working with Thanos at first, he would believe it soon after. Immediately after.”
Thor gapes at Loki, struck speechless by Loki’s confession. “You mean, she did all that for you?”
Loki nods miserably. “Both those men, and her, on my account.”
“But not Midgard. You said you were tortured.”
“By Thanos, not her. Never, ever her. Thanos tortured me-” Loki breaks off, shuddering. “He used the sceptre to control me. The same way I controlled Selvig and Barton. So when your green friend tossed me about…” Loki trails off, letting Thor come to his own conclusions.
“Banner knocked the sceptre’s hold loose. He brought you back to yourself.”
Loki nods. “And she told me I deserved a second chance. To remake myself. She said I didn’t deserve to die in shame. But nor did she.”
Thor stands suddenly. “I have to tell father. He is the king. He must know all that has happened. I will help you clear her name, at least, brother.”
“Thank you, Thor. You don’t know how much it means.”

Winter's Hearts
TITLE: Winter’s Hearts CHAPTER NO./ONE SHOT: Three/? AUTHOR: nekoamamori ORIGINAL IMAGINE: Imagine being Loki’s old friend/Lover in Asgard, but you left for Earth a long time ago. For all he knows, you might be dead, but you’re still alive and you’ve been working with SHIELD and/or the Avengers. RATING: T (so far) NOTES/WARNINGS: Also on AO3: Click here
You walked up to the library in silence with Loki at your side. You felt his questions burning as he tried to figure out what was going on. You took a step from the open familiarity toward formality. He didn’t remember and until he did, it was best to stick to protocol.
You opened the door to the library for him and watched with a fond, warm, smile as he stared at the wonder of all of the books. Some things would never change and placing Loki in a room full of books led to the same reaction no matter how many centuries had passed. Even the mystery of his missing memories couldn’t compete with a new library.
He wandered off without a word, enthralled by all of the books. You chuckled and settled on the couch by the fireplace, summoning the book you were currently reading from your bedroom. He would come find you when he was ready and nothing could drag him away from the allure of new reading material until then.
His nose was in a book as he walked over to the couch. You smiled and tossed one of the apples you had summoned his way. He caught it without looking up from his book and bit into it before he realized what you had done or what he was doing. Some things really did never change. He curled catlike on the other side of the couch and finally seemed to remember that there was more in his environment than books. He blinked quickly and closed the book, looking over at you. “Hi,” you smirked at him. He chuckled.
    “I should apologize…”
You shrugged. “I knew what I was getting into when I brought you up here,” you told him. You got his attention back at that.
“So, would you care to explain why you seem to know us so well, but Thor and I don’t remember you?” he asked, a hint of anger and hurt in his tone. You summoned a plate of sandwiches on a plate on the middle cushion and nodded. He took one absently. Asgardians were bottomless pits when it came to food.
“I promised you an explanation.” Now that it was time, it was hard to get the words out. “I don’t know what you remember. I’m going to assume it’s nothing, since your Lady Mother would have been thorough when the Allfather ordered her to modify your memories when I was exiled from Asgard,”
Loki glared at you. Exiles were not good, usually only for extreme crimes. “What did you do to get exiled?” he asked incredulously. Especially since you had obviously kept your rank when you were exiled.
You smirked at him. “Kissed you,” you replied. It was worth the open shock on his face and you laughed aloud at it.
“I didn’t think that was an exileable offence. Unless the kiss was that bad…” he teased, then looked shocked, like he wondered where the hell the teasing came from.
“I assure you the kiss was more than satisfactory,” you glared at him, crossing your arms over your chest defensively. He gestured for you to continue when his laughter died down. “So I’ll start at the beginning. I trust that you’ve learned about your heritage by now?” He inclined his head so you continued. “Thank the Norns. If I had to tell you that too, I swear by Odin’s beard I would have slapped the Allfather for adding that torture too, exile or no,” you grumbled. Odin wasn’t exactly your favorite person for what he did to all of you. “I’m Y/N, daughter of Sigun of the Valkyries,” Loki nodded recognition. He knew your mother at least. “During the war with the Jotuns, Mother went to Jotunheim in the guise of a frost giant as a spy for the Allfather. She ended up marrying one of the giants to keep up her disguise. I was born shortly before the end of the war. When the treaty was signed, Odin took you to Asgard and Mother returned there with me. She was actually your wet nurse,” you paused again there, hating that he didn’t remember, that you had to spell all of this out for him.
“You’re half Jotun?” he asked in the silence. You nodded and stripped off one of your gloves. With a faint shimmer of magic, your hand turned blue, confirming that you were at least part Jotun. You shook your hand and it turned back to normal.
“Neither of us were told of our parentage. Your Lady Mother thought I would be a good companion for you, though. She wanted you to have a friend who you couldn’t hurt if your Jotun powers went out of control. Oh don’t give me that look,” he was glaring. “You know as well as I that magic in children goes awry. Often and creatively.”
He chuckled. “You’re right. Go on,” he urged, sounding nearly desperate.
“So we grew up together. Your Lady Mother taught us both magic, mine taught us the fighting arts. Your idiot brother and his idiot friends were annoying companions and the butt of so very, very many pranks over the years,”
“I don’t remember any of this!” Loki protested, frustrated. You saw the hurt in his eyes.
“I know. I’m getting there,” you told him quickly. He didn’t look appeased. “I’ll skip to the end. We were 150, had been best friends from the cradle, and well, one thing led to another and were making out in one of the alcoves, the one behind the statue of Yggdrasil growing out of Ymir’s body. We were found by some of the maids. That wouldn’t have been bad on it’s own, no one cared about a few kisses in an alcove. Except that both of us were mostly blue and our eyes were bright red. Your brother and Sif saw us too. They had been looking for their own alcove to enjoy,” you explained. His face blanched when he realized what all of that meant.
“The very reason your Lady Mother thought I was a good companion for you as a child was the exact reason the king saw fit to exile me the very day those maids found us. He ordered the queen to modify yours, Thor’s, Sif’s, all of your memories so you wouldn’t remember me, and so none of you would remember that you were a frost giant. He erased all of the fun and friendship of your childhood so his secret that he had taken you from Jotunheim would remain intact. He ordered all of the adults to never speak of it again.
He granted your Lady Mother a boon and let you say goodbye before he sent me off. I’m still not sure that was a kindness, though she had meant it to be.” You would never forget the heartbreak in his eyes, the tears you both spilled, his shouts of grief when you were sent away for no more of a crime than kissing him. No matter his protests that you wouldn’t be caught again, that you wouldn’t do it again, the Allfather hadn’t been swayed. He was taking no chances with his secret. You had only been 150, the Asgardian equivalent of 18ish year olds. “He let me keep my memories at your Lady Mother’s request, saying that I was no danger to you in Midgard. She also told me that if I ever met her sons again, one of us should know what your childhood was really like…she said to tell you that you did not grow up in Thor’s shadow like you thought, but in fun and friendship and achievements of your own,” you tried to gauge his reaction to the words, but it was impossible. His reaction was hidden behind a millennia of living in the court of Asgard. You sat in silence with him for a few minutes. He needed time to process, and if you knew him as well as you thought you did, he needed space and solitude too.
“Would you like for me to show you to your room?” you asked, sticking to formality right now. He wasn’t up to opening up and you felt bad for pushing when he just got here. You just felt awful for what Odin had done to his memories after you’d gone through the Bifrost, and felt he needed to know now as opposed to hiding it from him any longer than absolutely necessary.
“How can I know your story is true?” he finally replied, thinking through the possibilities.
You rolled your eyes and huffed at him in exasperation. “You’re telling me the god of lies can’t spot the truth?” you asked incredulously. “Fine, read my mind and my memories if you don’t believe me. I know you know the spell. Your Lady Mother taught it to us when she taught us all of the telepathy based magic. We were… 50ish? You have my permission,”
He looked taken-aback. “You would trust-?” he started with such open disbelief.
“Of course I would,” he hesitated, confused and overwhelmed. You slipped your glove back on and got to your feet. “Come on, Lohk-your highness,” you corrected quickly, offering him a hand. “Let me escort you to your chambers,”
Hide behind formality, allow him to do the same. His court mask fell back into place and he stood, not taking your hand, but acknowledged the offer. “My lady Valkyrie is most gracious,” he replied formally. You nodded and led him back to the elevator. You took the elevator down a couple of floors to the floor your suite was on.
“This one is yours,” you gestured to the door when you reached it. You took a step back, unwilling to press yourself into his company or invite yourself to the solitude he needed to think over what you had told him.
“You’re not going to come with me?” his voice was teasing, but tentative, afraid of opening up. “I thought a Valkyrie’s duties were to devote her skills to the crown,”
You rolled your eyes. “I have no skills that will help in the bedroom, your highness,” you teased back, putting emphasis on the sarcastic way you said his title. Just like old times indeed, or almost. It was too hesitant and timid of teasing and banter.
“You’re over 1000 years old surely-” he teased. He stopped when he saw your expression.
You sighed heavily and answered only because it was a direct question. “I haven’t even kissed anyone since I was 150,” you told him softly. He would know exactly what that meant. “Unlike you, I can’t control my Jotun abilities that well. Anyone I come into physical contact with gets frost burned,” you raised a hand to indicate the gloves. “So, no. I have no skills that will help you in your bedroom. I’ll leave you to your solitude. If you need anything, my chambers are across the hall. I will see you later, my prince,” you bid him fondly and took a couple steps toward you room, fighting back tears. That had been harder than you’d expected.
“Until later, Lady Valkyrie…” he hesitated a moment, the word stumbling on his silver tongue. “Kyrie…” he said the word softly, tentatively, not understanding it, but seeming to know it was important.
You turned and smiled warmly at him. “You have called me ‘Kyrie’ since we were children,” you told him. “Your Lady Mother used to call me her little Valkyrie so often that she said you thought my name was Valkyrie for ages, but we were children, so you shortened it to Kyrie,” you explained kindly. You made a shooing motion with your hands. “Go brood oh tall, dark, and handsome trickster. You’ll feel better when you’ve brooded it over,” you teased. You stuck your tongue out at him while he spluttered and ducked into your own suite.
Maybe things had a chance to work out after all, and despite Odin’s meddling.
You knew better than to let yourself be that hopeful.
