I'm definitely not falling down a bird research rabbit hole for a headcanon post, not at all. No way. Definitely not indulging my special interest in birds with this. Totally not doing that, that would be very silly of me.
However, if I was doing that, then y'all would want to expect a very thoroughly researched headcanon post about a reader with bird wings :3c

Yandere farm x farmhand reader 🌾
Tumblr media
A/n: this contains few nsfw mentions, mdni please! They're not all that yandere, just a bunch of dumb silly hybrids trying to catch their favorite humans attention. This is their intro
✩̣̣̣̣̣ͯ┄•͙✧⃝•͙┄✩ͯ•͙͙✧⃝•͙͙✩̣̣̣̣̣ͯ┄•͙✧⃝•͙┄✩ͯ•͙͙✧⃝•͙͙✩ͯ•͙͙✧⃝•͙͙✩̣̣̣̣̣ͯ┄•͙
★yandere farm x farmhand reader. I know this isn't original, but I always love the concept. Just minding your business, sweaty and hot from the sun, when suddenly a certain German Shepard hybrid starts sniffing you up and down, lapping up your sweaty skin and grinning when you swat him away. How did you end up here?
★maybe you came here for a summer job, maybe some relatives owned the farm, maybe you were always working here. Either way, it doesn't take long for the hybrids to notice you once you arrive.
★the bulls and cows watching curiously from the fields, the centaurs trying to peek from their stables, the merfolk living in the lake just down the property poke their little heads out. The dogs barking from their Little homes, and the cats watching from the windows. You couldn't help but gawk at the variety of hybrids, there were so many! Merfolk, avians, cattle, cats, dogs.
★your first week there was nice, the other farmhands were nice, and the owners were so sweet! Always speaking fondly of their pets, the old couple would watch them run in the field or play by the lake. You yourself found them a little annoying. Always sniffing, grabbing, nipping at your clothes. You've had to fight your overall bottoms free from one of the pooches one too many times. The cats were no better.
★your second week you meet the cattle and centaurs. And unlike the house cats and guard dogs, they're less handsy. Simply observing from afar. Occasionally sniffing you before nodding their heads and pulling away. Letting you do your job of combing, cleaning and fixing up them and their stables. The cattle would happily let you milk them, applying the breast pumps to the females and a cock pump to the males. You ignored how they looked at you strangely during milkings
★the third week you meet the avians. Odd little bunch, hopping around and puffing up their chests. They watched you enter their enclosure curiously, you were busy picking up their molten feathers because you thought they were pretty. So bright and colorful! Walking around bent over a little when you finally notice the peacock male standing right Infront of you. He gave you a pointed look before his tail feathers expanded. Looking prideful, tilting his chin up as if in an arrogant way. Swaying side to side and closer to you, while you just held the feathers in your hands, a little confused. He got closer until he let out an incredibly loud squawk. Turning around abruptly to glare at the cuckoo who bent down to poke his butt. The cuckoo gave you a grin before climbing back up the tree, using this time as distraction, you quickly escaped.
★on the fourth week, you meet the merfolk. Having been here a month, they were eager to meet you. Watching you walk on the dock with fish feed, eagerly Perking up and swimming closer. You shook out a good handful and chucked it out for the koi fish to eat. They swarmed the area until all the food was gone, simply staring up at you. One poked her head out, tilting it a bit and making a 'click' sound with her tongue. You mimicked her, doing the same. She seemed elated, making various whistles and clicks, splashing up and down the lake. The lake was manmade and filled with koi fish when it was finished, but then again there may be more fish not even the owners know about since it was so deep. How'd they get in there? You're not sure, but you just know it.
★on the fifth week your owners told you about how they had bought multiple sheep, and goats. One male for each group. Watching the loading truck approach the little barn they were finished building. So that's why it was there, they started construction when you arrived the first week. You helped the other farmhands get them situated, at first they were rowdy and a little aggressive but for some reason calmed down when you approached them. Your colleagues now called you the sheep whisperer. You quickly learned how to shave their wool and milk the goats properly. Sometimes braiding their long hair, you just wish the ram would stop headbutting the nearest male colleague for your attention.
★On your sixth week, you went for a walk in the forest when suddenly a little body of fluffy fur tackled you, growling with it's teeth barred. You looked up to see a Pomeranian hybrid, trying it's best to look intimidating. Their fluffy tail gave them away, it was wagging 100mph. They visibly deflated when you reached up a hand to pet them, letting you for A couple minutes before getting off. Walking back into the woods towards three wolves. Dissapearing with them. Not soon after you found a friendly garden naga. Just lounging on a rock and enjoying the sun. You asked to join and they let you, laying there for a good while until you had to go back to the farm. Noticing they had wrapped their tail around you, oh boy. It'll take a good while to get out. Welp, might as well make yourself comfortable and wait for the dogs to come find you

Legends of the humanoids
Reptilian humanoids (9)
Naga 2 – Shesha, the king of the serpents [Part 1]
The Brahma Purana describes the reign of Shesha as the king of the serpents in Patala:
During the night the light of the moon is not utilised for its coolness but only for illumination.
Since that passes away is not taken notice of by the Nāgas who enjoy with gaiety the foodstuffs and the edibles they consume and the great beverages they drink.
Nor are Danujas and others aware of it.
O brahmins, the forests, rivers, lakes, and lotus ponds, the cooing of the cuckoo and other sweet birds, the pleasing skies, the unguents and the continuous notes and sounds of musical instruments such as the lute, flute and Mṛdaṅga drums, O brahmins—all these and other beautiful things are enjoyed by virtue of their good luck by Dānavas, Daityas and Nāgas residing in Pātāla. The Tāmasī form of Viṣṇu, named Śeṣa (Shesga) beneath the lower regions.
Daityas and Dānavas are not capable of recounting his good qualities. He is honoured by Devas and celestial sages. He is spoken of as Ananta. He has a thousand hoods and he is clearly bedecked in Svastika ornaments devoid of impurities. He illuminates all quarters by thousand jewels on his hoods.
— Brahma Purana, Chapter 19

Fossil Novembirb 10: Bayou in the Badlands
Tumblr media
Fluvioviridavis by @quetzalpali-art
Back to Eocene Ecosystems! One of the most famous Eocene fossil sites in the world is the Fossil Lake site of the Green River Formation, an ecosystem from Colorado in the United States. This ecosystem records the transition from the moist forested world of the early Eocene to the drier warm world of the mid-Eocene. The forests would begin to shrink back, the foliage would change, and so would the animals.
Fossil Lake records the start of that process! Sediment would regularly settle into this lake at periodic intervals, which then recorded the evolution of the lifeforms there over thousands of years. The forests were filled with sycamore trees and other broadleaf plants, as well as ferns.
Tumblr media
Limnofregata by @iguanodont
Because the lake was so frequently filled with sediment, oxygen levels were low to nonexistent, preventing decomposers from living at the bottom of the lake. This lead to many different organisms being preserved nearly perfectly, including many gorgeous birds!
In fact, the Field Museum of Chicago - my home - has many of these wonderful fossils on display, and have fascinated me since childhood. So I'm going to break format a little here to showcase some of these fossils.
Tumblr media
Cyrilavis, a Halcyornithid (Parrot-Passerine of Prey)
Tumblr media
Fluvioviridavis, a Strisorian (like oilbirds or frogmouths)
Tumblr media
Eofringillirostrum, a Passerine
Tumblr media
Limnofregata, a Frigatebird in a Gull Niche
Tumblr media
Nahmavis, a relative of shorebirds (Charadriiformes) or rails and cranes (Gruiformes)
Tumblr media
An unnamed Anseriform, probably similar to Anachronornis
Tumblr media
Celericolius, a mousebird
Tumblr media
Zygodactylus, a stem-passerine
We see once again in this ecosystem - as we have in the others we've covered - the common theme of Avian evolution: the niches may stay the same, but the birds filling them will always change. We have Mousebirds perching in trees in North America, we have Frigatebirds filling the Gull niche, ducks wading around the lake like flamingos, and cousins of parrots/passerines hunting prey.
Tumblr media
Presbyornis by @drawingwithdinosaurs
Other notable dinosaurs from this formation include Presbyornis, another one of those Flamingo-Ducks we've talked about like Teviornis and Conflicto; Gastornis because it was literally everywhere from the latest Paleocene through the early Eocene; Lithornithids like Pseudocrypturus because they were also everywhere; early landfowl like Gallinuloides; the cuckoo-roller Plesiocathartes; the ibis Vadaravis; and the turaco relative Foro. Once again, we see many tropical birds in places where they aren't today, due to the extensive warm climate of the Early Eocene.
Tumblr media
Foro by @drawingwithdinosaurs
This swampy ecosystem was filled with large crocodile relatives, small mammals, the earliest known bats, giant lizards, and an alarming number of fish - making it one of the better known ecosystems of the early Paleogene. But the best known Paleogene fossil location is still to come...

Hera, defender of cities, protector of marriage, champion of the love that upholds a family, that cherishes a child, you are the friend of those who hold the household dear. Queen of the heavens, holder of the lotus staff, the poppy and the pomegranate have you in hand. Hera, supreme in dignity and grace, unsurpassed in goodness and kindness, I praise you.

Fossil Novembirb: Day 10 - Bayou in the Badlands
Tumblr media
The modern landscape of the American west is but a far cry from its past. Early Eocene Green River formation preserves an incredible snapshot of time 50 million years ago. The locality of these fossils was once a huge lake system bordered by forests of sycamore and palmettos, and teeming with animals of all kinds, including birds, which were in the middle of an enormous radiation of forms.
Calciavis: A palaeognath which was a member of the lithornithids. Like them, it fed on insects from the forest floor and was a powerful flier. Some fossils preserve colour pigments of its feathers, suggesting this bird was a glossy black.
Limnofregata: The earliest known frigatebird that flew over the water just as its aeronaut descendants. Like modern frigates, it plucked prey from the water and the shorelines of the lake system.
Plesiocathartes: A bizarre bird that has had a complicated history. Now we know that it was an early relative of the cuckoo-roller from Madagascar and probably lived a similar lifestyle.
Celericolius: An early member of the mousebird family that had long wings and even longer tail. It may have flown at high speed through the forests.
Foro: This american bird is in fact an early member of turacos, birds which are unique to Africa today. Like them, it mostly fed on soft fruit.
Prefica: A strange bird who'se closest living relative is the oilbird of South America, which is a nocturnal frugivore. It could be that this ancient relative lived in a similar way.
Nahmavis: An early member of the shorebird family known from a spectacular fossil that preserves feathers.
Gallinuloides: The earliest known true galliform, this small fowl was among the early ancestors of guans, quails, turkeys and grouse.
Presbyornis: A widespread wading waterfowl related to ducks and geese. Sometimes called the flamingo-duck, it used its flat bill to filter its food, and may have nested in colonies like flamingos.

Liurnia of the Lakes – Caria Manor
Following the death of the golden scion, the last Carian princess vanished into obscurity, leaving her estate cold and vulnerable.
Or so it seemed, to the downfall of the scavenging Cuckoo. The old retainers haunt the grounds to this day, in humble service to a far away moon.

‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‎˚ʚ♡ɞ˚ ‏‏‎‎‏‏‎ ‎SEASONS
starring: yoichi isagi, meguru bachira, seishiro nagi, rin itoshi
every season brings in new types of romance. for some, divergent aspects of their lover come to the surface as the temperature changes. winter with its frozen windows brings warmth, spring with its blooms of colour and cuckoos produce tranquil lovers. however, for you each season brought around different people as your companion.
in spring when meadows were painted with daisies pied and violets blue the person you seemed to spend the most time with was yoichi isagi. be it walking under shady trees, observing the slow flowering of pale buds as soft breezes brushed your cheeks, or under the night blue canvas of the sky counting the twinkling stars reflected in his bright eyes: he was heavenly. his face was lovely and fair. his hair was raven dark and gloriously soft. and his eyes. oh darlings his eyes. deep enough to fall into and intoxicating enough to stare at forever.
not only was he heavenly in carnality but also in manner. he kept mementos of every second he spent with you. a box with your name containing polaroids, bracelets, tickets to museums and fairs hid under his desk. he worshipped you. he probably still does. you always felt his lingering gaze as you watched movies at those open-air theatres. whenever even a single hair on your arm faltered he was immediately there to shower you with warmth. and if a coat or jumper wasn't enough his kiss would melt you in an instant. his lips on yours; heart on his sleeve; breathing you in; his hand gripping your tresses with urgency, like the wind would blow him away from you.
‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎
spring cannot last forever. rough winds shaking the darling buds of spring signalled the arrival of summer. with it came not only golden piercing rays of heat but also a new lover. as the sun idly watched you from up above the only person you could seem to think of was meguru bachira.
hoping the cool water could soothe your scalding skin you'd spend all day sitting in pools, rivers or lakes. the chlorinated pool water burnt your eyes red but you were easily distracted by him. he usually brought with him cans of pineapple which you would eat on the edge of the lido. the saccharine juices dripping down your arms and pooling at your elbows in a gross fashion. "no matter, you can just wash it off in the water." he'd say. nothing seemed to be able to wipe the wide smile off his face. but you didn't mind. it was beautiful. if the lazy-paced clouds were to ever cover the sun his brilliant smile could be its envoy.
secluded lakes were the best to disrupt with your boisterous chatter. a talkative bachira would yell nonsense just to hear his voice echo from the trees surrounding you. skipping rocks over serene waters and making flower crowns as he sat in your lap was common. and as the rich smell of the moss lulled you to sleep the two of you napped the brazing afternoon away. that was until the surrounding birds chirped as the sun sunk under the horizon. the sky was as fiery and passionate as his love for you. he proved his loyalty to you that summer evening. roughly yet gently pushing your head towards his and locking lips. his tongue still tasted of pineapples but he smelled of orange blossoms and the sea. with the strength he was using to hold you it would've been impossible to break from the kiss. but you felt no need to do so. it was perfect here, under the palatinate sky, his lips, your lips, and the sweet songbirds twittering.
‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎
with childing autumn the grand trees faded as they shook off their bright and young foliage. the divine kaleidoscope of change as the months passed reminded you of how grateful you were to have such a homely and calm companion. in fact, seishiro nagi was slumber personified. laying on crisp white sheets, an abundantly oversized duvet blocking the soft light entering through the window, fuzzy socks tickling each other's ankles, he wished he could hold more of you in his hands.
autumn was not in fact the season of productivity, for all the time you spent with him was mostly leisurely or plain napping. over the time you spent with him you grew accustomed to the pulsating neon lights inside your local arcade. the constant chatter, dings and pings from games around you and the distinct smell of sugar burning had their own charm. and be it bowling, air hockey or atari, whatever it was you did your lungs couldn't catch a break from the constant laughter the two of you let out.
he too wished to commemorate the time you spent together but it was mostly through obtaining the highest scores he could, hoping to have your names appear together on the leaderboard. he didn't seem to be the persistent, competitive type usually but with you he was different. you didn't change him intentionally yet you were glad he gave you so much attention. he was patient when teaching you tips and tricks, kind even when you didn't understand after millions of trials, witty when you started to get frustrated and above all, rewarding when you achieved your goal. rewards consisted of him pushing your cheeks in and kissing your forehead for much longer than was socially acceptable. but who cares what others think right? he didn't seem to mind, so why should you?
when you parted he seemed just as indifferent about it as you were. but he missed you. deeply, unfathomably, senselessly, terribly. or maybe it was but a moment in time he had grown fond of. nothing more, right?
‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎
when the winter nights obfuscated the withering sun prematurely the only way to keep warm was to allow rin itoshi to hold you as if you were an extension of him. logs of wood burned away letting sparks of fire bite into the frosty air but this did not help rid your nose of the dusty red colour it adorned. at least you could blame it on the cold.
you didn't expect him to be such a good and avid baker. you swore he was the stoic, brooding type. seems you were wrong. the kitchen perpetually smelled of cinnamon, freshly baked bread and addictive sugar cookies. but apparently your eating wasn't enough, you had to help. soon you found your hands sticking to the viscous dough, flour powdering your face and chocolate chips rolling off the counter. it was a grand mess. in the end the process didn't matter because the oven sorted it all. the whole ordeal made you realise just how little you knew of him. it triggered the curiosity in you. promptly, the questions started rolling in. so many questions it drove him sick.
literally. his already red nose was burning brighter and his forehead stung whenever you touched it. the world around him shook. you had never felt the urge to take care of your companions before. you'd bring him a cold towel and air his surroundings allowing him fresh air. he tried pushing you away whenever you approached him. he worried you too would catch whatever he had. but were you not his in sickness and in health? perhaps the winter will stay.
‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎
or maybe not. after all, each season brought around different people as your companion. ends are ends.

Thank you very much for all the map and explication ! Time for me to go reread Merlin's Guide (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧ (yeeees I will find all the red button like with the forced healing ♪) Still I feel a little bad to clog your ask box so here a question : if it's not too spoilery, how will Not Amnesiac MC react if we (the player) flirt with them ? If it's too much, so instead, how Merlin (and RO aware of it) will react if "McQuacked" Cuckoo/Impostor/Changeling MC make the Striped Cuckoo dance ?
Anything to do with the Amnesiac-Who's-Not-Actually-An-Amnesiac MC is a huge spoiler, so have a dancing striped cuckoo instead!

Merlin and Adrian will react the same way that they did to Duck MC doing the manakin mating dance.
Arthur: Ah... yes, it takes awhile to get used to avian form from what I remember.
Percy: *is dancing with the cuckoo*

Finished The Running Grave the other day. Spoilers for the whole series below the cut.
Robin's last chapters undercover had me on the edge of my seat, I was so stressed for her.
Once again didn't realise whodunnit until Strike laid out the facts. I was in the “Daiyu is still alive” camp. After we learned that Mazu originally claimed that Alexander Graves was Daiyu's father, I thought the title of the book was a clue to her still being alive but… nope XD
Then again, the only character we met that could have been her was Becca, but she didn't quite fit the bill, did she? As Abigail said, “’Er sister an’ bruvver would’ve known she wasn’ Becca! ’Er muvver would’ve known! (...)” And it didn't explain the role of the hatchet or the burned rope.
One thing I wasn't surprised by was Charlotte's suicide, though I expected it to happen later on in the book.
Some background: after the first sample came out, I'd found out through some research that Dream of the Red Chamber (or The Story of the Stone), a novel in which one of the main protagonists is called Daiyu, had been adapted in a English-language opera in 2016. One of the changes in the opera version was that Daiyu kills herself by drowning into a lake after the man she loves marries someone else. In the novel, Daiyu succumbs to chronic illness before the marriage takes place.
Considering Tannhäuser turned out to parallel Strike's love life in The Ink Black Heart pretty closely (for an in-depth explanation, see this series of posts on The Strike & Ellacott Files Blog), I did wonder if Daiyu's suicide in the opera and/or other plot points of Dream of the Red Chamber would play a role in The Running Grave. A synopsis of the opera is available here.
Of all recurring Strike characters, Charlotte seemed the most likely to commit suicide. She has attempted it in the past. Plus, some aspects of her character seemed similar to Dream of the Red Chamber's Lin Daiyu:
[Daiyu] is an icon of spirituality and intelligence: beautiful, sentimental, sarcastic, self-assured, an accomplished poet, but subject to fits of jealousy. - Dream of the Red Chamber, Wikipedia
I couldn't see (or didn't want to see :P) a Strike/Robin marriage being followed by him becoming a monk though.
Hindsight is 20/20, as they say. In the end, here's how The Running Grave parallels the opera adaptation of Dream of the Red Chamber:
In both stories, Daiyu only drowns in the retelling (the opera / the story what was spread by the UHC).
Daiyu and Charlotte are tragic characters, who both had been “unwell for a long time” (to quote Strike).
Daiyu / Charlotte kills herself because she can't handle the love of her life being with someone else. However, Charlotte doesn't drown, though she dies in a bath. Robin is the one who almost drowns.
Baoyu turns to religion after Daiyu's death / Strike visits a religious building (a church) after Charlotte's death.
After Robin escapes the cult, the story takes a very different turn, concluding with Strike's sort of confession. At first I was worried that Murphy was going to propose to Robin (since Daiyu's murder at Abigail's hands was clearly supposed to mirror the siblicide of The Cuckoo's Calling), but this was much better.
Who knows what awaits our heroes in Book 8 though… Hopefully not more (un)intended consequences of Strike's fling with Bijou. She said it wasn't his but she could be lying (or, more likely, have no idea who the father is).
P.S. Special mention to Pat who, along with her husband Dennis, was amazing in this book.

Hakuoki Ginsei Shinpachi Short Story
This story was originally published in B's-LOG 2020年6月号.
Tumblr media
Hakuoki Tsukikage B’s Log 2020年6月 Shinpachi Short Story “Uzuki (卯月)” [which means the 4th month of the lunar calendar]
Translation by KumoriYami
"An eye for green leaves, The Mountain Cuckoo The First Bonito [*see endnotes]"
As I suddenly remembered these five-seven-five stanzas , I stopped the hand which was cutting vegetables to recite it.
The stimulating aroma of food filled the kitchen in the daytime.
In response to my sudden statement, Chizuru, who was dissolving miso paste in that moment next to me, was startled.
"Those sentences just now, have you heard them before?"
"I've heard it in Edo. The vibrant green leaves, the chirping cuckoos, and the leaves are also vibrant, the cuckoos are chirping, and the season for catching bonito [type of fish]—That's a haiku that celebrates spring, right?"
"That's right!
"If you're from Edo, you can't help mentioning it, because it's a symbol of spring [refers to the f! Speaking of which…"
I clenched my fist at Chizuru, who still seemed confused, and spoke.
"Chizuru! I believe we should have the first bonito now!"
".......Huh?......"
"Fortunately, I don't have any patrol work today. If not at noon, can we have it at dinner/I can't have dinner without lunch, right [not sure bout the latter sentence]?
After speaking enthusiastically about my passion for bonito.
Chizuru-chan looked at me with a troubled expression in response to my wilful words.
"Um, Well, I understand how you feel... but if you were in Edo, it might be possible, but it's hard to find bonito on the streets of Kyoto..."
I understand your feelings… but, while that would be fine in Edo, it's extremely difficult to buy bonito on the streets of Kyoto..."
"That's right..."
I forgot that Kyoto was located far inland and distant from the sea, and that there were only rivers and lakes, like Lake Biwa, and bonito cannot live in rivers…
"I think it'd be hard to find bonito, but what about something else? I'd like to do that to help you."
After accepting Chizuru-chan's proposal, we began searching separately.
"Yo, Sano! I'm trying to find a first of the season [the tl I'm referencing just says "first thing" but i modified my translation based on what what "hatsumono" is, which usually refers to the first of the season for produce, catch (as in fish), etc.], so can't you provide some sake?"
"What first of the season. We drink all year round, right?"
"Hijikata-san, can you give me for the first of the season?"
"I don't have a first of the season… right, I can give you a lecture on your lifestyle."
"Uh... you're always unromantic…"
After leaving headquarters, and wandering around the streets, I had absolutely no results. Should I just give up?
"Nagakura-san, I found a first of the season!"
The one who saved me walked like a goddess. Her hands lifted the bamboo shoots in her hands, which had been dirtied by soil. Her cute face was covered in dirt/mud.
I suddenly understood how much she had gone through, and I couldn't help but feel warmth swelling up inside my heart.
Chizuru-chan grilled the bamboo shoots she found as a first of the season.
Each time they were grilled, a fragrance wafted over. It really was a good choice.
"But, why did you say you wanted the first of the season?"
I scratched my face
With her asking that, I scratched my face.
"…Uh, that was… some people say that eating the first of the season can extend your life by 75 days. In this sort of life, when you don't know when you'll die, I hope everyone can eat this."
She seemed to understand my answer and smiled.
"...Nagakura-san, you're very kind/gentle."
"Th-That's right! Then I'll grill these first and give them to everyone! I really want to see their surprised faces!"
---end---
The haiku at the start of the story is by Yamaguchi Sodo, which was written in Edo, 1678 and reads:
目に青葉 (Me ni aoba)
山ほととぎす(yama hototogisu)
初鰹 (hatsu-gatsuo)
The printed story contains those exact lines but I copied the English translation and took the information on it from : https://matsuobashohaiku.home.blog/2021/07/06/the-signs-of-summer-1678/
