He was concerned about you.” James inches closer, the rough bark of the trunk he's sitting on catching his robe as he moves and causing the material to rustle. 

“That little snake. He was taking the piss. Or our mother put him up to it.” Sirius doesn’t spit, but his voice is so full of venom that there’s hardly any difference.

James shrugs. “Dunno. He seemed genuinely worried. Well, as genuine as he gets, I guess. Doesn’t matter.” He didn’t come here to discuss Regulus and his many wrongdoings, so he goes straight to the heart of the matter. “Why are you moping here all alone?”

Why didn’t you reach out? Do you not trust me anymore to hold you like you matter, like your secrets are fragile glass I clutch to my chest until the sharp edges slice my heart open, and our blood mixes together?

It’s Sirius’ turn to shrug, but he also slides closer with the motion. “Not moping. Thinking.” 

Their arms are brushing now, and how long will James be able to resist the temptation to kiss Sirius’ trouble, whatever it is, away? How long before he hauls him into an embrace that will obliterate the rest of James’ self-control? Or rather, the excuses he calls ‘self-control.’ How long can he pretend none of these acts, the heated touches, the press of mouths, the lips fused to tender skin, are a service to a friend, provided out of the goodness of his heart? How long before he admits to himself, to Sirius, to anyone, that he’s a selfish bastard whose ultimate goal isn’t to help his friend but to satisfy that gaping need that opened after one kiss shared in the dark? 

A kiss that, if he’s honest, has been years in the making?

How long before he faces the truth of it all, that he wants more, more from Sirius, more, closer, tighter, harder, just more, more of his touch and attention and devotion and time.
