What makes Crystal such an interesting character is that she is the physical embodiment of the most insufferable kind of privilege in a viciously misogynistic society.

She’s the princess of a very racist and classist kingdom and benefits from these things, but she has little to no agency among her family and peers with the most extreme example being the moment she’s sold off as a paramour to a dictator (by her own sister!) Her lack of agency and how she finds ways of keeping her privilege in this system directly correlates to her promiscuity.

Crystal eventually earning the title of the ‘people’s princess’ is honestly so fitting. ‘People’s princess’ is in of itself an oxymoron if you think about it for more than two seconds, which is the perfect summation of her character. I do think her desire to help people and her love for her husband came from a genuine place, she’s a rebellious spirit who never looked down on someone for their status, but she does all these things from her position of power. She wants to help the subjects of her kingdom but not enough to rebuke the privilege she gets from their oppression. She wants an exotic husband for whom she rebels against her family’s prejudice and traditions to marry him but won’t ever stand in solidarity with him when he actually needs it.

I’ve said it before but Pietro/crystal are basically the less warped and twisted version of Heathcliff/Catherine from Bronte’s Wuthering Heights. The novel is a gothic dark romance that examines race, gender and class as the foundation to the destructive whirlwind of Heathcliff and Cathy’s romance. The dichotomy of oppression and privilege Cathrine has as a high society white woman and the racism Heathcliff receives as a Romani boy are examined through the abuse they endure. If you’ve read the novel you’ll notice about a million parallels but there’s one moment in particular that always stands out to me.

People often bring up the instance when the two are trying to reconcile after Crystal’s affair and there’s still some tension between them, in this moment Crystal tells Pietro that if he ever tries to retaliate by having an affair of his own she will have her people imprison/ exile him.

Compare that to a moment in Bronte’s novel where a young Heathcliff and Cathy have a childish argument and in a moment of frustration Catherine yells at him, prompting one of the housekeepers to flog him. In their defence I don’t believe Crystal or Cathrine were trying to be malicious, in fact they come off as very childish and bratty. The problem is that when Crystal threatens Pietro like this she actually has the power to do that. This is what defines the relationship between the two. I feel like their relationship problems wouldn’t have been nearly as dramatic and messy if it wasn’t for this enormous power imbalance between them, it’s the direct source of discord in their marriage.

Considering the fact that multiple members of her family have tried to bring back slavery, I don’t think it’s fair to say she’s the worst of them, in fact Crystal has arguably done the most good out of her family. But perhaps what makes her so uniquely frustrating is what a massive hypocrite she is. How well this is handled varies on the writer.

Crystal is a Catherine Earnshaw, a Shiv Roy, a (significantly less evil) Cersei Lannister. Heck she has more in common with Emma Frost than most mutants do! I have love for all of these characters and find them very compelling but to me the moral failings of their hypocrisy, their complicated access to privilege and the lengths they’ll go to keep it is the core to their characters. I genuinely enjoy Crystal and think she is sympathetic and has redeeming qualities but she’ll never be a hero to me, her heroism, activism and ally-ship exists only in the comfort of her own margins. But that’s what makes her an entertaining character.

Soft lips pressed against yours before you could utter another word, slow and practiced motions guiding where you remained stunned. Her thumbs grazing your jaw had your mouth parting just enough to grant Wanda's tongue entrance, the tip of the smooth muscle tracing the line of your bottom teeth before sliding over your still tongue. Your deep groan resonated through both of your mouths, the corners of Wanda's mouth turning upwards into a smile.

It was intoxicatingly sweet how quickly she could affect you, especially given her initial worry you'd reject her both for being older and having never been in a relationship with another woman. Apparently you were inexperienced in your own ways and damn if it didn't make Wanda that much more attracted to you.

As the brunette pulled back, shaky hands darted out to grab at her hips, your fists balling into her striped shirt in case she had any ideas about moving further away. "Mommy, noo..."

"Mommy?" If bolting down the street was an option, you'd have taken it, your uttered words mortifying you more than you could've ever imagined. Sure, the title had passed your lips before, but only in the privacy of your own home. To your credit though, this scenario was always a fantasy; your poor brain didn't have time to censor yourself.

Embarrassed as you were, you huddled into her, burying your face in the crook of her neck for any kind of respite. Wanda didn't let you cower for long, though, wrenching you away despite your pitiful protests. "Oh you're precious, please don't hide. You want another kiss, sweet pea?"

"Yes please-" Manners always went a long way with Wanda; the added please might've been the only thing that kept her from chastising how unceremoniously you pulled her in for a second kiss, arms wound around the older woman's neck to crash her into you.

This time as your lips locked, Wanda's hands wandered, shamelessly tapping at your knee until your legs parted, an easy request giving her access to your bare inner thighs. Perfectly manicured fingernails raked gently over your soft skin, tantalizing made up patterns leaving you shuddering as you eagerly welcomed her tongue on yours again.

"And have you let anyone touch you here before?" Her fingertips brushed over your center, electric even through your denim shorts. When you nodded, Wanda felt her own sting of jealousy, annoyed at whichever faceless human got to you before she could. You weren't technically their babysitter, just a neighbor who'd clung to Wanda since the day she showed up at your door with a charming smile and welcome basket. With how much you loved hanging out with the pair of five year olds, it was natural Wanda ask you to watch them for an afternoon here or there and you can't think of a time you'd ever denied her requests. Even when it meant sleeping in your crush's living room and trying not to touch yourself to the thought of Wanda sleeping -or not sleeping- in a bed right above your head.

Today though, something in her voice led you to believe you'd be somewhere cozier than the couch. If your mouth didn't get you in trouble first. "You know, most girls wouldn't make me wait hours... are you sure we can't-"

"I'll make you wait days if it means you'll learn patience." Wanda hummed, bending over to hold your face in her hands, admiring your comically blown pupils and rosy cheeks, "If you ever think about letting anyone else come close to touching your greedy little pussy, you'll both have hell to pay. Got it?"

Her tone was so serious, deadly straight expression letting on just how much she meant what she said, but as she scratched behind your ears, you melted. Darcy had come to this blind date very prepared with a list of questions meant to subtly reveal the character of the guy, but still be fun conversation starters. Jane rolled her eyes at this, but it had saved Darcy from many a bad decision over the years. Today’s questions were fall themed and she smiled to herself as she read them over.

“Darcy Lewis?” she looked up and saw an absolute dreamboat of a human being standing before her. She opened and closed her mouth several times before being able to speak.

“Um….Yes. Are you Steve?”

She’d never imagined when Jane had given her the name that she’d meant THIS Steve. Heaven help her.

“I am. Nice to meet you. I’ve heard good things about this place.”

She nodded. After they’d ordered and she’d managed to recover from the shock of having the former captain America sitting across from her, she pulled out her list.

“First off, I have a few questions for you,” she declared. Steve looked a little apprehensive.

“Nothing intrusive or fangirlly, I promise,” she reassured him, trying not to think about just how blue his eyes were. “Just some fun conversation starters.

“Okay,” Steve agreed, relaxing a bit. “Ask away.”

“First off: What are your thoughts on witches?”

He made a surprised face and thought for a bit.

“Not a fan of the ones in fairy tales who eat children and poison apples,” he admitted. “The ones I know in real life are pretty cool.”

He smiled and she kicked herself for forgetting about his friendship with Wanda Maximoff.

“What about your average, every day type witch who mostly works with minor charms and spells to help with housework?” She asked.

“I’d say they’re highly underrated,” Steve replied, giving her a knowing look.

Darcy grinned.

“Okay, next question: how many flannel shirts do you own?”

Steve straight up chuckled.

“Three. All of them Buffalo plaid.”

“Excellent!” she responded. “Cats or dogs?”

“Both,” Steve answered immediately. “Volunteering at the shelter is my favorite time of the week.”

Darcy beamed.

“Cake or pie?”

“Pie, of course.”

Darcy pumped her fist.

“I knew you were a good one. This unlocks the possibility of a second date!”

“Glad to hear that,” Steve grinned. “I have a feeling this is going to be one of the most interesting dates I’ve ever had.”

First impression: Oh I like this guy.

Now impression: Hasn't changed much except just thinking he's probably one of the best Star Wars characters.

Favorite moment: I think near the end of S3, when Grogu officially becomes his son.

I don't actually have a great gauge on how the various entities are treated in TMA fandom because I'm scared of it lmao BUT I feel like Nikola Orsinov and s3 in general are really underrated in fandom!! I fucking love the slow leadup to the reveal about the Unknowing and all of the Stranger statements having to do with circus stuff slap. I sometimes see fanart but idk, not enough love for Nikola crosses my way!

hmmmm. I guess I really loved Jasmine Bhullar DMing for Coffin Run and I feel like not a lot of people talk about how great she is? She is DMing for Desi Quest soonish which I'm very hyped for. Not that I don't love Brennan and the other guest DMs but idk, I just feel like all the cool shit she did in that season kinda gets forgotten.

VERY FAIR there's a good few 2000s comics I do like; Incredible Herc, Vision: Yesterday and Tomorrow, hell, Busiek's Avengers counts as mostly 2000s, Waid's Fantastic Four, most people like Alias, etc... just the way the poll was phrased, to recommend a whole decade, I always have the instant thought of the ugly side of things, of how 9/11 changed America and by extension big two comic books in a massive way and they haven't really recovered since, with stuff like Civil War, House of M, etc etc, but there are really good comics from that era that I would recommend! I was just surprised by how highly voted it was on that poll at first because I think 2000s Marvel and I think Ultimates and how it ruined Wanda Maximoff and Hank Pym for over a decade, but it's more than fair to have favourites from that time! I do too; honestly, Yesterday and Tomorrow is one of the best and most underrated Vision stories I think.
