#why all the norse mythology inserts?

Hey-o! Tis the season for people to talk about how the holidays were "actually pagan" and I'm on the hunt for sources about how that's really not the case, if you have any you'd recommend!
Okay, so the problem is there are so many weird "Christmas is stolen!" bullshit memes going around, it's so hard to just give you a comprehensive list of sources. Christmas celebrations have evolved as the religion has spread, and different things come from different times...
The key here is to go for academic sources. This is a question of history, and a well supported historical research is going to tell you whether they're operating from primary, secondary or tertiary sources.
So while I can't give you a simple list, let me give you a couple of examples off the top of my head and give you tips on how to investigate any the dumb claims that get passed around.
Christmas being in December: So a lot of people go for the "Christmas is in December so it can steal from [INSERT SOLSTICE CELBRATION]" is ahistorical... because we know exactly why Christmas is in December. Because the guys who made the decision argued with each other and left behind written documentation. The two big names you need to look up are  Clement of Alexandria (who pitched January 6th) and Hippolytus of Rome (who proposed December 25th). This is around the turn of the third century, and you can find both of their writings. Some folks have questioned the authenticity of some of Hippolytus of Rome's writings, but Clement of Alexandria's seem well supported. These were internal arguments about when the birth of Christ took place within the early church, and when they settled on late December. There are reasons for this, and you can read their arguments (it largely has to do with the importance of when Jesus was conceived -- they wanted that to be an important date and then added nine months to it). Importantly though, because linear time is a thing, this means Christmas was set in December before the Christianization of the Germanic and Norse tribes... so anyone who says Christmas was set to December to correspond with Yule doesn't understand the concept of "coincidences."
The Christmas Tree: The Christmas tree was invented in 16th century Germany. That's... that's just written down all over the place. Now, there are legends about Martin Luther being the first who did it -- but I'm pretty certain that's just an embellishment that got added on. There are preceding traditions where part of an evergreen was brought into the home as a part of solstice traditions (though some will claim the Egyptians did this? Which is wild -- likely misinterpreting their use of palm fronds as the same thing), but the act of taking a whole ass tree, cutting it down, putting it in your house, and decorating it? That's 16th century Germany all the way. You can rabbit hole so many sources on that one, but honestly just pick apart the citations on the Wikipedia page. Putting a branch in your house and dragging a whole tree in are very different acts.
Jesus's story is copied from [INSERT RANDOM GOD]: There are so many of these, and some are just downright disrespectful to major world religions (the Krishna version of the meme especially). The answer is... just see if what the meme is saying about the god is supported by the mythology. Like I've seen ones that says Dionysus was "born of a virgin." If you know anything about the Greek gods, you're probably already laughing on the floor. Horus gets dragged into this too, because Gerald Massey was trying to pull a "White Goddess but with Dudes." But any serious research on Horus will tell you the supposed parallels aren't supported by the mythology.
So sorry, this wasn't so much sources you can use as it is how to look for them to begin with. Because there's just so, so much. This isn't even covering cases of syncretism, where pre-existing cultural traditions got continued post-Christianization. Because it's almost always the case that if a pre-Christian practice endured post Christianization, it's because people decided to keep doing it -- not because the church was trying to "steal" it. The latter means there was some mustache twirling plan behind it, when the former means (usually) the church went "Well, they're paying their tithes and saying it's for Jesus, so who gives a shit?"
I'm just going to finish this off with linking to my podcast episode on this, along with Ocean Keltoi's great Yule video on the topic. Hopefully that helps.

Candy Coated [Chapter One] Even in Death [Buddha]
Tumblr media
A/n: this is the first chapter of the Buddha (ROR) story that I’ve been mentioning for a week or so now. It was inspired by the one-shot that I wrote ‘Lost in Paradise’, and this story basically follows the same idea.
I waited to post this chapter until the poll went down, which asked about the gender or lack of gender of the Mortal Reader. 65% of 52 voters voted for the reader to be a female and 35% voted for the reader to be gender neutral. I have the screenshot in case anyone wants to see it, though to be honest, I did my best not the mention the gender of the reader at all unless I need to. So, with the voting done, the reader will be female. Thank you for the support and for the votes.
There is a tag list below; if you would like to be added to it in order to keep up with the story when I post chapter, please let me know so I can add you. I plan to update this story as often as possible with two other stories I’m working on, so please be patient. Read the warning tags and enjoy.

Warning(s): soulmate au, reader insert, mentions of death, female reader.
No Minors Allowed!!
Fear devours you, tightening your muscles in a way that leaves you powerless and frozen.
You honestly don't remember much; the siren woke you, but it was far too late to evacuate. The storm had been far worse than the news had reported; it had become a category 5 before anyone even knew what was happening. You had tried to shelter yourself indoors as the powerful winds rampaged outside, but it wasn’t enough and the walls came tumbling down.
But somehow you had wound up outside, sitting amongst the wreckage.
This can’t be right. It's silent; the entire world around you. It's almost like the noise had been drained. You can’t hear the wind screaming in your ears or the houses as they are torn asunder. In a way, it’s peaceful, but the silence is also frightening. Especially with your body lying meters away from you, caught beneath the rubble of your cheap apartment.
Why are you looking at yourself?
"This is terrible," a sincere voice utters.
You avert your attention in the direction of the noise, drawn like a moth to a flame, and see a teenage girl with short lilac hair standing in the middle of the road; her aqua-green eyes are filled with tears as she stares out at the chaos.
"The Gods have no mercy," she mentions. "There are so many souls here."
What is she talking about? You raise a curious brow, glancing at your body once again. The reality of the situation hits you like a ton of bricks and tears gather in your eyes.
"I'm dead."
The sound of footsteps brings your attention back to the teenage girl to see her approaching you. If you are dead, is she some sort of reaper? You dart to your feet and take a cautious step away from her, but she raises her hands in defense.
"I'm not gonna hurt you. I was sent to help."
"How?" You ask in disbelief, motioning toward your body. "I'm dead. How can you help me?"
She narrows her eyes in sympathy.
"I can take you to the afterlife where you can move on. I'm sorry, but there isn't much else I can do for you."
So, she is a reaper. She doesn't look scary at all, but this doesn't mean that you trust her; a point you emphasize by peddling back as she takes a cautious step forward.
"My name is Göll. I'm a Valkyrie; a demigod. Um... you know, like––"
"I know what a Valkyrie is," you mention. "It's the 21st century."
What you don't understand is what a Valkyrie is doing here. Are they not mere legends? They are specific to Norse mythology, or so you had thought. Realizing that she has been prattling on the entire time about something you haven't been listening to, you raise a hand and stop her.
"So, you came to take me to heaven... or Valhalla–– whatever you want to call it." You ask.
Göll nods.
"Well, not just me. My sisters came here too." She takes a brief look around and frowns. "This was a tragedy. There are more souls here than I can handle on my own."
How many had died? You widen your eyes, a motion that doesn't go unnoticed by Göll.
"I'm sorry, I don't mean to bum you out." Her eyes fill with tears. "I'm terrible at this."
You can't help but snort. She is an animated person. Swallowing the lump in your throat, you glance at your body once again in sadness. Göll is right; it's time to move on. As much as it pains you, it's time to leave your life on Earth. Warm tears gather in your eyes, but you blink them away and saunter toward her. Göll notices and smiles.
"There's no need to worry. I'll guide you."
She offers her hand to you, but once you take it, a strange sensation overcomes you. Something tightens simultaneously around your ankles and before your eyes, a red cord appears, flickering in and out like a light. Göll squeals in alarm.
"W-what is that?" She asks.
"You don't know? I thought you were a Valkyrie."
Leaning down, you snatch fearfully at the cord, seeing that it's transparent. What is this? It almost looks like a red string of fate. But how can this be? It's in the wrong area.
When it doesn't seem to be hurting you, besides giving you a major craving for sweets, you calm down, though your heart is pounding. It's impossible to tell where the cord is leading; it twists and coils through the rubble like a snake, going further than you can see.
"What do I do?" Göll asks out loud.
She taps her green high-top sneaker on the ground and groans.
"I'll have to take you to my oldest sister. She'll know what to do."
Grasping your shoulder, a blinding bright light surrounds you. For a moment, you fear being trapped in the light, but quickly it fades. You drop to your knees and rub at your eyes.
"Warning next time."
Göll apologies.
"I'm sorry. Please wait here, I'll be back."
You hear her sneakers squeak on the floor as she rushes away, leaving you alone. With your eyes clear, you glance around to see that you are in a bare room no bigger than a bedroom; there's honestly nothing in it. Where did the Valkyrie take you?
Standing with a grunt, you saunter toward the door, checking to see whether it will open or not. It isn't locked, so you know that you aren't a prisoner. A long marble corridor stretches out on either side of you, but as far as you can tell there is no one around. You take an uneasy breath, shutting the door. Göll had asked you to remain in the room, so you plan to do just that. You aren't certain, but a part of you wants to believe that she is going to do you no harm; she seems nice enough, and a nervous wreck perhaps.
It was nice of her to try and comfort you. Though you reckon it's her job to show sympathy toward lost souls. You feel no less grateful to her. It had been a shock to see your body lying in the dirt; the lifeless look in your eyes nearly shattered you.
And then there is this.
You lift your right leg and watch the red cord flicker in and out. It's a tether; it can't be anything else. But who is on the other end?
And what does this mean for me?
The door comes open with a sudden low click and in saunters Göll and a beautiful woman wearing an elegant white dress with gold and navy detailing. Her piercing eyes observe you in a way that makes you uneasy like you are on the receiving end of a judgmental interview.
"Lift your leg."
Can she not ask nicely? Her tone is demanding, but you can hear the interest in it. Hesitantly you bend your knee and watch as she leans down to have a look; a section of her midnight blue hair falls over her shoulder as she does.
"What does it mean?" Göll asks.
The older Valkyrie stands and hums.
"I haven't the slightest idea."
"Y-you don't?" Göll questions with a squeak.
A deep sigh comes from her sister as she closes her emerald eyes in thought.
"Calm down. I know that it's a God Tether... But for whatever reason this soul has it I don't know."
"This soul has a name," you mention giving it. "You can talk to me. It's a fate string, isn't it?"
She hums.
"It's known as a God Tether here but means the same I imagine as your interpretation of it."
"But do souls have tethers?" You ask.
The woman shakes her head.
"I've never heard of a soul possessing a tether; it's for the living. Is this the first time you've seen it?"
You're certain this is the first time. You nod.
"Very well," she utters. "This warrants an investigation. Come with me."
Raising a brow in question, you watch her turn and saunter toward the door; the feather train hemmed into the inside of her dress slides across the floor as she walks. You glance at Göll a moment in uncertainty, humming as she nods to assure you that it's fine.
As you step out into the corridor, the smooth-tongued woman turns to you.
"What sort of living arrangement suits you?"
You raise a brow in question, having been put on the spot. Your face heats up in embarrassment.
"Um... I guess comfortable and simple, but honestly anything will do."
"Göll, have someone prepare this room," she orders.
Tensing, the expressive teen nods and rushes off leaving you with her. You avert your eyes at her in question.
"Who are you?"
"I'm Brunhilde; the eldest of the Valkyrie sisters," she answers with a grin. "Now come this way."
Following her, you survey the area. There isn't much to look at as far as you can tell. The walls are decorated in elegant gold trim and some of the rooms you pass are locked with electronic keypads which is strange to you, as they appear technological; far too 20th century for a 12th-century Valkyrie to have. Did they advance with the times? Perhaps they've always had this technology and mankind just took its time.
"How many Valkyries are there? I recall reading that the number is uncertain."
Brunhilde peeks over her shoulder at you for a moment, then averts her attention to the path ahead.
"There are 13 of us."
That's a lot less than you had expected. Upon meeting Göll you had known that things were not exactly as the history books had written them to be. The question of how much intrigues you.
"And you guide souls from every corner of the Earth?" You ask.
"The human realm is known as Midgard and the God realm in which you reside is known as Valhalla, or as you know it, Heaven. Gods from every pantheon live here," Brunhilde explains. "But to answer your question, yes, we do."
Interesting. You had always assumed Valkyries only led warriors to Valhalla. This discredits a lot of theories about death in general, like there being reapers.
"Do you know a lot about God Tethers? Or fate strings as you call them," Brunhilde suddenly asks.
Peering behind you for a moment, the cord slides along the floor.
"Only what media and fanfiction taught me about them. They're called the Red String of Fate and it links you to your soulmate. But I’ve always heard that the string is around a person’s pinkie, not their ankles.”
"Then you aren't aware that a God is the one who tethers predestined humans?" Brunhilde questions.
"I wasn't aware... But it makes sense."
You frown in response. Fate is only a concept to some it seems.
Brunhilde laughs uncouthly, a noise that doesn't match her demeanor.
"You seem upset."
"That some God is yanking people around like puppets on a string, yes," you answer honestly. "It doesn't seem fair and now even in death it can't be escaped."
You don't understand it at all.
"But that's not entirely true...is it? I'm a unique case or else you wouldn't be speaking to me."
"I'm merely curious," Brunhilde answers.
She stops at the end of the corridor, behind a railing that overlooks an enormous roofless stadium with thousands of seats. Your eyes widen in amazement.
"What is this place?"
"This is the Valhalla Arena. At the moment it stands as a precaution but that matters not at this time," Brunhilde answers.
You wonder what she means by this, but taking into account her entire answer, you know it isn't your place to ask. Perhaps it is a form of entertainment for the Gods and nothing more.
I doubt it, however.
With an uneasy sigh, you glance at her.
“Somewhere out there is the one I’m bound to.”
“Yes… so until I know who they are, I’d like you to remain here,” Brunhilde concludes.
You hum in understanding. Of course, you are curious, but the unknown unnerves you.
“Who is the God who put the string on me?”
Brunhilde grins.
“His name is Yue-Lao. He is known around China as the God of Love and Marriage. And for some reason, he has taken it upon himself to tether the dead.”
You get the feeling that Brunhilde wants to know why just as much as you do.
“I’ll help in whatever way I can.”
“As one would hope,” Brunhilde states.
You have no idea how long this investigation will last, but you are willing to wait it out for clarity.
I’m dead… there’s not much else I can do.
For once time is on your side.

Valhalla is not heaven, and other reasons fascists are dumb dumbs.
The utterly, bewildering, so funny it's depressing thing about neo n@z1s and blanc enthusiasts being so fucking quick to appropriate Norse iconography as a symbol of their "proud heritage" is that they consistently demonstrate a grasp on Norse Mythology as deep as the Marvel Cinematic Universe does. Not a dig on the MCU, but, let's just say creative liberties is an understatement when it comes to representing Norse Mythology.
The primary point of interest boils down basically to the concept of the "exhalted warrior death." As fascism is the ideology of hero worship, on a surface level, this makes sense. Old Norse Culture was one largely defined by conflict and vikinging as a trade.
Many Norse beliefs are shaped by, designed to inspire and exhalt the warrior who fights without fear. Their society in part relied on "the hero warrior."
Couple things though:
1. Not all Norsemen were vikings, and you REALLY aren't one.
You think the Norse belief system was so heavily lazer focused on a single profession in what needed to be an entire functioning community everyone that wasn't a viking was poopooed to damnation and/or a dishonorable life? No bitch. "Hel" in Norse mythology is just where the dead ARE. It's a very morally neutral place to be. Hel be vibin'. Odin, Freya, and possibly Njord were collecting souls for a very specific reason. That being . . .
2. The souls of warriors were being brought to Valhalla (among other places) to train for a final battle THEY WERE DESTINED TO LOSE.
Y'all fucking forgot about Ragnorok didn't you? The souls in Valhalla are being conscripted to a suicide mission. It's a place of honor to be chosen, but it's not a reward.
The training is apparently honestly a bitch in a half in it of itself supposedly. I guess you get god mead, though. Sit next to Odin at the big boy table, maybe. An afterlife of pain and awaiting doom for beer and for daddy to notice you.
That's the thing, though. Valhalla isn't supposed to be Heaven. It aligns with many other Norse Myths in that it exhalts to bravery in the face of certain annihilation. Valhalla as a function of beleif designed to psychologically break past the human instinct to prioritize self-preservation. The quality in which it exhalts is not the hero's death, but embracing doom. THAT'S WHY Odin chose warriors who died WITH WEAPON IN HAND, as in, they already faced one destruction, they can face another.
The army of Valhalla weren't even the only deaths of honor Odin recognized one could achieve. The Volva were all very much in Hel once they died, and they are all distinguished as Odin's special little future-seeing squad in the mythos too. And that's JUST Odin, ignoring the other gods who chose souls for their armies.
Norse mythology, ironically to the point of head-exploading farce, spits in the face of the concept of the Hero's Death as defined by fascism. "Dying for the cause" is a Christian/Abrahamic value that they are retroactively interjecting into Norse belief because historical self-insert fanfiction that is the Arian Mythos. There's no fucking point in training and fighting in Ragnorok, everyone is destined to fail, everyone knows it, and that's the fucking point.
The concept of Ragnorok and Valhalla was not even universal among the Norsemen. The inevitability of death and rebirth is just kind of a given as a natural truth in most pagan beliefs. Everyone you know and love is going to die, and then something else will come from the ashes. Literally "chill bro it be like that sometimes."
And if that's not enough to convince you fascists don't actually know shit about Norse mythology, I can tell you all about how fucking gay it is.

I see you hate Sylvie so much and the Loki TV show too. why?
Tumblr media
Okay, lemme break it down into a final, once-and-for-all peace speaking on the issue of the series and Sylvie. I'll try to make this as painless as possible.
1- Looking at it beyond the surface, she's not really interesting. The term 'Mary Sue' gets thrown around a lot with Sylvie, and I kind of have to agree. She seems to be little more than a trope checklist. -Sad background that motivates her actions? Check. -Deep down she just wants to be loved? Check. -Inexplicable instant "chemistry" with the male lead? Check. -She's just so super special and important? Check.
But even so, there have been others with similar Sue-ish backgrounds that the MCU has managed to make into pretty decent characters, like Scarlet Witch in WandaVision. Arguably, both characters share some traits, but the writers of Wanda (at least before Multiverse of Mehhness) clearly knew how to bring those ideas into a twisted story of learning how to confront the past and to mourn with a character who still had something to learn.
In contrast, Sylvie really doesn't have any flaws to turn into a deep character study, does she? I think that's her second-biggest detriment (see below for the biggest). A good character is never perfect. A good character had flaws, wants, drives, and other things that make them imperfect but relatable. Sylvie is incredibly unrelatable.
Truly I believe she was written for the stans as a self-insert. She isn't even a decent one. I read fanfics on here with amazing examples of a good insert character, so it clearly can be done. Again, Sylvie ain't it.
2- Sylvie's existence both mocks the comics as well as Norse mythology as a whole. Most of us anti-sylkis know this already, but in Norse mythology AND the Marvel canon that goes beyond the MCU, Loki has had several lovers and wives. Loki married and had three children with Angreboda, and then went on to have twins with wife Sigyn. In the comics, he also had a lover named Amora the Enchantress (which we ALMOST got in the MCU before her cameo was cut). Any one of these three would've made a fantastic romantic plot for Loki if the MCU *really* had the compulsion to go that route.
Alas, instead, the MCU kind of bastardized Amora, Sigyn, as well as another character from the comics named Sylvie, and combined them into TV!Sylvie. This not only means we will likely never see Amora or Sigyn in the MCU, it means they were replaced by an inferior on the same level as Randy from That 70s Show, who was also a sucky character created for the fans as an amalgamation of pre-existing characters.
3- She's just another in a long line of Loki-abusers. Like, does she ever comfort him after all he does for her? Does she even really listen to him? Because from what I saw there was just a lot of this happening between them:
Tumblr media
Jesus, lady. What has he done to make you such a jerk to him? I get you're supposed to be a #GuuurlBoss but that doesn't mean "be a total cunt to a man whenever you feel like it."
After all this time, if we really had to have a Loki character study series, why doesn't he get some respite from the fact that basically everyone he knows has either been cryptic and mysterious to him at best, and hostile/violent/malicious to him at worst?
THIS is probably the single biggest reason I loathe Sylvie. We're suppose to believe she's just being Miss Independent when she's really just bringing the poor god down even more than most. I feel like if she met Thor, he'd get upset at seeing how she treats him, and he'd be confused by how easily Loki just accepts it all.
4- I'm becoming more convinced Tom's only doing the show out of obligation, and that his creativity is being tossed aside for the sake of the series. I normally don't like to speculate like some others do, but with more people (like Zoe Saldana) coming out and saying they felt repeatedly stifled by the MCU's yuckity-yucks in terms of character development, I definitely believe they're telling Tom to shut up and read the script. I mean, the guy probably knows as much Norse/Loki mythology as any scholar by this time, and he seems to be a really creative person by nature. They're tossing out a whole trove of potential.
I get he's got a family now and he needs to bring in some bacon, but 1- he and his fiancee are both prolific actors who could probably get any roles they wanted. Hell, Zawe's about to enter the MCU herself when The Marvels come out later this year. If she has a larger role in the next few phases, I hope to god they treat her better than they've treated Tom and Zoe and other actors. But I doubt it. 2- he's probably already richer than God
He's almost certainly trapped by contractual obligations at this point, and that fucking sucks, and yes, I blame the tv show for this.
So, in conclusion: this really is a train wreck of a show hidden behind a lot of smoke and mirrors. I'm not sorry to say it. Sylvie lacks any kind of genuine depth, and the writers seem both lost on where to take Loki's character arcs, and not interested.

Stray Kids X Fenrir Post (LONG POST)
(Cause why the Hell not?)
Today I found out that 1) someone made a Fenrir based tattoo sleeve design for Bang Chan and 2) not only has Bang Chan seen it, he has stated he might possibly get it. Now, I am a STAY, a Norse Pagan and a follower of Fenrir. I think you can figure out what my brain was doing processing all this.
(Also; THERE HAS BEEN HINTS TO NORSE MYTHOLOGY IN STRAY KIDS MUSIC VIDEOS!? STAY, do a wolf some assistance and pinpoint me to the videos and moments cause I NEED MY STRAY KIDS NORSE/VIKING CONTENT. Anyways...)
I am very Autistic when it comes to several of my favourite things coming together and creating a *chef's kiss* moment. This is no exception. It's why INK are my favourite band (metal, Emo and horror together? YES PLEASE) and now I have Stray Kids, Norse mythology AND LITERALLY MY FUCKING RELIGION? Holy fuck! *insert brain melt moment from Indiana Jones here*
So, I figured; let's talk about some of Stray Kids past works and Fenrir at the same time. Yep, a Stray Kids Fenrir themed playlist in the format of a Tumblr post by someone with Autism currently losing their damn mind.
Before we begin, let's get everyone acquainted who may be unfamiliar.
The Binding of Fenrir
'The Binding of Fenrir' is arguably the most famous tale involving Fenrir. Fenrir is the eldest child to Loki and Angrboda, his younger siblings being the Midgard Serpent, Jormungandr (who has beef with Thor, to keep it brief) and the future death Goddess, ruler and caretaker of the dead and arguably an important figure in Baldur's tragedy, Hel (or Hela).
Why was Odin interested in Fenrir? For one simple reason; he had been told a prophecy where a large and powerful wolf would kill him. I should point out this part of Odin and Fenrir's story is a very medieval trope of the paranoid king and his son destined to kill him. This case is no different; the downfall of the king is because of his own paranoia. Everything he does to try and prevent his downfall only solidifies it into existence. It's a common belief among many of us Heathens that Fenrir might have never considered going after Odin if Odin had just left Fenrir alone the whole time. Hell, there was the distinct possibility that Fenrir could've likely been an ally to Odin and the Aesir if it weren't for their fear and paranoia.
So, how does Fenrir get bound? Odin and a few others ride to the Iron Wood, the home of the Jotunn and Chieftess of the Chieftains of the Iron Wood, Angrboda, and forcefully take her children from her. Jormungandr strikes and either Odin or Thor (heavily debated) throws Jormungandr into the oceans of Midgard. Hel is immediately exiled from Asgard and sent to what is often dubbed 'Helheim'. Fenrir was kept in Asgard, primarily to keep an eye on him. He was scorned and mocked and treated with fear by the Gods, and no one dare approach him to feed him. Aside from one God; Tyr, the God of Justice. (Also a God of War himself but ssh.) Tyr befriended the young wolf and fed him.
Naturally, Fenrir grew. And very quickly. He soon domineered over the buildings of Asgard and the Gods grew paranoid of his strength and size. It was then decided for him to be bound. They tried on three separate occasions, telling Fenrir it was a game. The first time was some normal, ordinary chains. Fenrir broke those with a single movement of his paw. The second was a reinforced chain. These were a little tougher but they too were shattered. The Gods then got in contact with the Dwarves to create for them a special chain, named Gleipnir. This chain was presented to Fenrir, and its appearance - similar to that of a ribbon or thread - immediately made Fenrir suspicious. He only agreed to have himself bound if one person were to lose their hand should they go back on their word. Tyr was the one who offered (this is a HUGE deal, as Tyr is basically associated with business transactions, oaths and the likes. Loki even goes on to call this out in the poem 'Lokasenna' (Loki's Flyting)). Naturally, Fenrir is bound, he can't break free, Tyr loses an arm. Fenrir snaps at the laughing Gods' ankles and Odin shoves a sword through Fenrir's jaws. Fenrir will only be freed by the violent thrashing of his brother come Ragnarok, to which Fenrir will kill Odin. Some sources also say Fenrir eats the sun and moon, however this is a tricky subject as that act is often attested to two other wolves. There's plenty of theories but for this post, they are irrelevant.
Stray Kids Everywhere All Around The World
Stray Kids first became known by a survival TV show in late 2017. At the time, there was nine members. (For the sake of avoiding drama and cause the matter is done, I will be talking about Woojin but sticking to the facts. Everything from the drama was false (which I learned the hard way and am still trying to learn from); do not attempt to bring up the controversy in reblogs or replies or I will block you.) The members included (in order, starting with team leader then oldest to youngest); Bang Chan, Kim Woojin, Lee Minho, Seo Changbin, Hwang Hyunjin, Han Jisung, Lee Felix, Kim Seungmin, and Yang Jeongin. The group would debut in 2018 with the track "District 9". Upon debut, most of the members would continue using their names except for the following; Minho (would debut as Lee Know), Jisung (would debut as Han) and Jeongin (would debut as I.N.). Kim Woojin left the group in late 2019 around the time of the "Double Knot"/"Levanter" promotions. (Hence forth, Woojin is irrelevant. This is where we shall leave any mention of Woojin hence forth.
Stray Kids would go on to become a pretty big deal, even winning the competition TV show 'Kingdom' (let's not go over the whole MAMA bullshit, that would take a whole tray of paracetamol to get through), leading to the band being noticed by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. In the past year, several of the members have appeared or modeled for various designer brands (ignoring the politics of this for now; good on them for their success however).
Bang Chan and Fenrir's Connection
As was mentioned in the TikTok I linked earlier, Bang Chan is the member of the group who was a trainee for the longest amount of time. Chan had been training under JYP Entertainment for seven years by the time of the pre-debut TV show. Chan has mentioned several times in the past the anger and sadness he felt, connecting with other trainees only for them to leave (either from being fired, changing career paths or debuting before him - this was especially noted to be the case with groups TWICE and GOT7, where Chan is friends with members of the groups and even shared a dorm room with members of GOT7). It's not hard to imagine the amount of pressure Chan was under to debut on the survival show. Or the amount of pressure he put on himself and the rest of Stray Kids. This amount of pressure would rear its head when members Lee Know and Felix were eliminated (but would be brought back later and debut with the group). A clip from Felix's elimination gives a glimpse into how hard Chan was on himself.
youtube
I will not speculate Chan's thoughts or feelings, but if you dig into it, you can come to some conclusions quickly based on the surrounding context and what we know about Chan and Felix's friendship post-debut.
Fenrir is bound and thus cannot be free to show his true strength and power, held back by the Gods for fear of what or who he could be. In essence, some could argue that this is what made Fenrir stronger and the wolf we know today but that comes with the ridiculous amount of pain and torture the wolf felt. Sure, he became stronger, but at what cost? I would say this is the same question to consider when talking about Chan and Fenrir. Sure, Chan is a wise and strong leader now, but what was the cost? He's made it clear that at one point before debut (and other members have backed this up), he actively avoided connecting with people cause of how many friendships he watched crumble for one reason or another. There's even a clip from a livestream where Chan was noticeably angry with staff and you can see the visible fear and awkwardness from the other members. Again, will not speculate on what any of it could mean, but it does point to something Fenrir and Chan may also have in common. When they are angry, they are
PISSED.
However, it's also important to keep in mind the sort of things Fenrir teaches and encourages from a Norse Pagan/Heathen perspective, so...
Fenrir in Norse Spirituality
A common name attributed to Fenrir is "breaker of chains". When we're talking about what this means from a spiritual standpoint, it means to free yourself from your past, free yourself from expectations or demands of others that holds you down and to let go and live free. For many, this can meaning learning how to cope with mental illness and trauma, learning how to manage (not control) one's anger, how to fuel emotions into actions and remain within the present and not think about the past or the future.
I've also heard many people describe Fenrir as a special kind of 'military boot camp' strict. This is the best way I can describe it; imagine, if you will, that you are a house. Fenrir is the property surveyor (the person who checks houses for faults). Fenrir will go around and tell you everything that isn't sturdy, that has cracks or other faults. Not out of malice, but because if you don't fix this, all it takes is one bad day and your self-worth comes crashing to the ground. Fenrir will even go out of his way to test these parts of yourself, again not out of malice but to make sure you can withstand it. Going back to the house metaphor; imagine Fenrir pointed out your foundations were made with weak cement, so you redo the foundations. Fenrir isn't convinced until he can push into it or stand on it and find it can withstand the weight. (This doesn't go into how our emotions fluctuate daily, but hopefully you get what I'm trying to say.)
Fenrir is also oftentimes seen as an example of justified rage. The rage of youth being mocked by their elders for simply being young. The rage Black people feel when another officer shoots yet another unarmed Black person. The rage LGBTQIA+ people feel when one of their own is killed or assaulted for simply being in love or expressing who they are. The rage women feel when men try to take advantage of or gaslight them into accepting lower. The rage of Indigenous people watching as their lands get bombed, farmed, and in general colonized and ripped of all its worth until nothing remains.
With all these factors in mind, let's finally get to the meet of this. The Stray Kids songs one (like myself) can associate with Fenrir. I will include lyrics, and you're more than welcome to reply or reblog with songs I may have missed. So, without further ado; let's get cracking! (Please note I will be using OT8 songs primarily for this post, again to avoid drama or anyone dogpiling about the controversy.)
'Placebo' (3RACHA original; 2017, Stray Kids original; 2018, re-recorded; 2021.)
"The positive belief that will even heal my wounds Keep going, the Placebo that works on me Honestly, there’s no need to be negative Trust myself, throw away those extra thoughts"
'Placebo' is a song essentially about relying on yourself to get through your challenges, while acknowledging what is currently making you feel weak. The fear and worry about wondering if you will actually make it, but telling yourself you can despite your worries, being your own friends in your darkest moments. Felix's verse I think is almost entirely applicable to Fenrir (Felix even says "drop these rusty chains" - remember, Fenrir was first bound by chains before Gleipnir.)
"Miroh" (original; 2019, re-recorded; 2020)
"Poison, trap, toadstool you can set them up I'll survive in the end, whatever it takes I know your traps, you set them up And I stomp on them tougher There's only one answer, you just have to open it"
"Miroh" (Korean word for 'maze') is an EDM-style song about persevering through the challenges you face, head held high, trusting your instincts and knowing that one way or another you have prepared for this moment and you will make it out the other side. The chorus starts with a line explaining that the narrator (Stray Kids) decided to go into the city (the challenges) themselves and know what is coming, are ready for it and know they can make it through the trial. The song also uses various animal sound effects, including a tiger's roar in the chorus, a hawk's caw and a bird-filled jungle soundscape. (Fenrir is often reported to be associated with swamps and mountains, so the inclusion of wild animal noises fits perfectly here.)
'Red Lights' (2021)
"No matter how hard I try to escape, there's no answer Until I fall asleep in the sun, even deeper I really wanna know, yeah I've already lost control"
This song is performed by Bang Chan and Hyunjin, and according to Genius the song "about compulsion and confusion of ego and about obsession about doing something". One would think, with the sexy sound and concept of the track, it would imply something of a sexy nature. However, it can also be about anything that someone can grow obsessed with. Another person, a feeling, an action, a moment, etc. The line "Tell me you hate me" makes me think of Fenrir talking to Tyr. The music video for the track also heavily features Chan and Hyunjin in chains, so one could also argue the obsession to be the desire to escape from their chains.
"MANIAC" (2022)
"The real self has been released (Yup, yup) Barely holding on (Yup, yup) After blinking once, back Again, back to cosplaying as what society Defines normal to be pow"
'MANIAC' is a song with a visible influence from Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein' as it explores one's individual uniqueness, the expectations of society (which can delve into toxic perfectionism/happiness, conformity etc) and how we as a people have hidden our inner 'maniac' to fit in with the world. Even when in Asgard, surrounded by the Aesir and Vanir, Fenrir was always gonna be Fenrir. Just by his mere nature, he was deemed an outcast for being a larger and stronger wolf than they had encountered before, something that within itself isn't a crime. Fenrir would likely always be looked down upon if he showed discomfort, anger or any sort of negative emotion. In this song, Stray Kids basically asks the listener to open up their true self, live their authentic selves and enjoy the life they've been given, essentially; "shed the chains society has forced upon you."
"BEWARE" (original; 2018, re-recorded; 2020)
"My current state, the way I talk, my actions I know I shouldn't be like this But everything goes the opposite way I want you to understand me I don't know what will happen Again today, I'm barking"
Remember when I talked about Fenrir and justifiable rage and I brought up youth being angry with elders being condescending with them? This song is my 'case and point'. Going back to what I mentioned in 'MANIAC', no matter what Fenrir did the Aesir were likely not going to view him in a positive light. Ask any person who has tried to get on the good side of someone who couldn't care for them and you'll often find descriptions of growing tire, frustration and rage. Sometimes, we are going to encounter this in life - whether it be a boss who treats us poorly, a colleague/acquaintance/friend gossiping or lying about us behind our back, a family member who has expectations for you that you can't reach no matter what you try etc. Fenrir is no stranger to this; he experienced it firsthand living amongst the Aesir. That rage one feels in these moments is a healthy rage, a voice, which you will find is either being encouraged by Fenrir or is Fenrir himself, screaming at you "This isn't right, I shouldn't be treated like this!"
"SCARS" (2021)
"I'll never cry because I know that it'll never change I'll stay standing and endure it in an unknown place There will be many times I'll almost fall, but Alone, I reach out my hand, alone, I stand back up"
Sometimes, when we face hurdles in our lives we will feel sadness, sorrow or despair. If there's one thing I want to end this made tangent about, it's this; you will face challenges and it's OK to not be happy about it. It's alright to cry, to scream and wail and sob, to shed tears, feel fear, embarrassment, etc. It's alright if you need to punch a pillow or cry yourself to sleep. Remember; Chan probably did the same. For seven years. Fenrir probably did too, stuck within his personal Hell. But if there's one thing you should take from both of them, it's that you are stronger than you think you are. You can survive, you will survive. You will see the light on the other side one day; all it requires is fighting through the pain, even if that means crying from the hurt. We don't leave this life unscathed; we all will die with countless scars, both physical and mental. Be kind to yourself, know you are worthy of being alive right now, and you have the strength to push onwards. Carry the strength of Fenrir - and the strength of Bang Chan and Stray Kids - with you and remember you aren't alone fighting against the chains you've found yourself bound in.
(TLDR; an Autistic Norse Pagan loses were mind when were discovers a Fenrir tattoo design for Chan, goes on a long Stray Kids and Fenrir rant.)

hey it’s out in new zealand, that’s my break and i’ve had this draft waiting for, like, two weeks.
some notes on the codenames (source x) that blood of eden uses for the lyctors
all of the blood of eden codenames for the lyctors are based on mythical weapons, the exception being source aegis (athena’s shield, sometimes featuring the gorgon’s head), but it does make sense upon reconsideration because gideon was not the person the codename was meant for, it was pyrrha, and what is a cavalier if not a protector of their necromancer? it makes much more sense for pyrrha to be the source aegis referred to as wake’s informant, especially since we learned that phyrra was the one who instigated the relationship, not gideon prime.
source piotra took me a moment because it’s a version of the name peter and i was just ??? about it because i was not exposed to anything to do with christian religion until i moved to newfoundland and had to start religious studies in the middle of fifth grade. however, there is a legendary sword that was used by the apostle peter, which is said by some to have been brought by joseph of arimathea to britain, at the same time the poznañ archcathedral (the oldest polish cathedral, settling why the name is piotra, the polish version of peter) displays the copy of the supposed blade itself, a roman gladius with a spaded end.
joyeuse for mercymorn—did blood of eden know her simply as the saint of joy first, given that mercymorn wanted their names to be forgotten and not used, and thus codenamed her after a sword containing the word ‘joy’? joyeuse itself is the legendary sword of charlemagne, the first holy roman emperor, and described in the song of roland. the blade used at the coronation of french kings is claimed to be joyeuse and has been altered over the centuries before being displayed in the louvre today.
cassiopeia continues the mythological swords theme by being named source gram after the sword of sigurd, known as gramr in old norse, which was used to slay a dragon in the volsunga saga. as for why? i’m going to go with the proto-indo-european serpent slaying myth to connect them, cassiopeia being the mother of andromeda who was staked out and left for the sea monster kētŏs (who is not a kraken, thank you very much for inserting that idea into popular culture, clash of the titans), who was also described as a sea serpent, given the similarities between serpents and dragons in greek myth.
now, as for cytherea, source chrysaor. i was confused because i kept looking at chrysaor the mythological person before smacking myself upside the head and recalling the faerie queene by edmund spenser where chrysaor is a sword wielded by sir artegall. sir artegall, the embodiment of justice, the champion of justice. and justice, to blood of eden, is ‘the vengeance of the ten billion,’ it is justice to ‘kill the emperor and burn his houses.’ in cytherea’s own words. (there is also demeter’s title khrusaôros, referring to the golden blades of wheat, and cytherea’s return to the first house is to harvest the seeds planted during the past ten thousand years, to cut down the heirs of the nine houses in the same way wheat is cut.)

I know you've written about the Gullveig/Freyja theory but I keep seeing the equation of Angrboða with the witch whose heart Loki ate according to Voluspa hin Skama and both of them being equated with Gullveig. I want to know where this idea comes from. I mostly see it on FB in the Norse Gods Discussion Group and a couple Lokean groups {although, not as much anymore}. I honestly think this is just too much of a leap in logic. I know Genevieve Gornichec put Angrboða as Gullveig in her book, but I'm not sure if she equated them with the heart eating thing. I didn't read it.
I'm asking because I've been looking for good fiction about Norse mythology but keep running into the idea that Loki is an abusive husband but also that killed his mistress and ate her heart, which kinda doesn't make sense to me because why wouldn't he have just slept with her if he wanted more children or whatever.
I'm going to stick to Greek or Egyptian mythology based fiction like ENNEAD for now, whilst looking for good Norse ones.
The first author that I know of to describe Gullveig/Heiðr, Angrboða, and the heart into a single figure is the 19th century Swedish author Viktor Rydberg (he also included Aurboða and Hyrrokkin in this complex). Rydberg was convinced that there was a single original epic narrative that was shared by all the Germanic-speaking peoples, and that myths, legends, and folklore of Germanic Europe was made up of the decayed, corrupted fragments of it. He also believed that he knew how to put it back together, sometimes even borrowing from non-Germanic narratives.
In order to make that make sense, a lot of his work is very preoccupied with merging different figures together, because he can't really allow any loose ends. His work is also characterized by a fairly strict polarity between the gods (unambiguously good) and their enemies (unambiguously bad) which, to be fair, was not uncommon among scholars in his day. He had some things to say that were important for the 19th century, but his work should not be taken seriously today.
He does still have a small but very prolific following among modern heathens including the authors of the so-called "Asatru Edda" and whoever runs www.germanicmythology.com.
I'm not sure if more recent Lokean/Rökkratrú theorizing about Gullveig/Heiðr and Angrboða is related to Viktor Rydberg or not. I could imagine that the sort of Þursatrú/Nordic Satanism types might have some things in common with the Rydberg-inspired heathens, taking the same black-and-white, hardline good-vs-evil view, but siding with the opposing team, and being favorable toward the Gullveig/Angrboða/Aurboða/Hyrrokkin complex; and then this could filter into other Lokean or Rökkatrú spaces. To me, the burnt heart seems to point to Rydberg. I don't think that Völuspá in skamma gives an impression that the heart that Loki eats belongs to Angrboða. Rydberg only came to that conclusion by inserting Völuspá into the context of Völuspá in skamma, so that Angrboða is mentioned as the mother of Fenrir, then is burnt (as Gullveig), then the burnt heart is eaten before she's resurrected. I find this pretty unintuitive, and unlikely to be thought of twice independently of each other, but I could be wrong.
On the other hand, sometimes ideas just go into circulation without anyone knowing where they come from, not thinking to question it. It's possibly that Rydberg was the ultimate origin of this, but that nobody spreading the idea knows it.
There are also a lot of heathens who worship Angrboða, but since she's only mentioned by name once in all of Norse mythology (twice if you count Snorri, but it seems like he's working from Völuspá in skamma, so it's probably just the first reference again), it seems natural to look for traces of her elsewhere. Merging her with other figures like Gullveig/Heiðr might be a way of adapting other lore so that their goddess has more written about her.
As an aside, if a figure from Völuspá is to be identified with Angrboða, I would expect it to be the unnamed in aldna í Járnviði, whose children are "Fenrir's kind."
I'm not really very familiar with Lokean groups or even really Facebook heathenry in general anymore, so it's very possible I'm missing some things. I don't really know anything about Norse mythology-inspired fiction.

what is your mythology fic?
Tumblr media
Happy middle of January! A myth can come from different places with differing characters. From stories of Gods to Men, these are told in the form of comedies or tragedies as a way to remind people of both their virtues and hubris. Many have adapted myths from variations of mythologies in fanfiction, including K-Pop, to read or write a reimagining of what might have happened. Would you want to highlight it?
We are compiling a list of mythology fics that are written with 4th gen kpop idol(s) in mind. It can be from Greek such as Orpheus & Eurydice or Eros & Psyche, from Norse such as the events of Ragnarok, to fictional works based on mythology such as Percy Jackson or Hadestown. It can be location-based, religion-based, or mythology-adjacent. We are open to them all~
If you have one, you can insert them into our recommendation list that will be posted at the end of the month.
All you have to do is:
Send an ask with the fan fic work you want to recommend! You can submit with your user shown in the ask or anonymously. Also, optionally, give a comment on why you recommend this certain fic!

---------------
The ascent up the gloomy staircase was devoid of conversation. The single sound that carries through the narrow passage is a footstep ricochet, though these only appear to be generated by you.
It’s funny, you think, out the two of you it would have been more probable that Morpheus’ lace up boots would cause such a noise, rather than your bare feet.
Morpheus lets you lead the way. You are hyper aware of him maintaining a two-step distance behind you despite the fact that he moves soundlessly.
It is like he is a transmission and you are a receiver. Something keeps calling to you, prickling the outer layers of your mind, thrumming in your bones.
It's a heady, intoxicating sensation. One that tricks every neuron into thinking it's alive. You worry that it’s the kind of thing you could become dependent on, especially since it was infinitely better than the guilt ridden state you had been in for so many days now.
You are grateful when you complete your climb and have something to take away such consuming thoughts.
You push the door to your bedroom open and immediately take up residence on the bed. You drag the covers up to your hips and drink in the feeling of freshly washed linen on your skin.
Morpheus stands a polite distance from you.
You turn on the lamp and gesture for him to use the chair.
He sits gracefully, straightening up and staring at you with his transcendent eyes.
“May I ask you some questions?” You ask timidly.
“You may.”
"You're not a human, are you? Not really, even though you look like one."
"You are correct. I am not human."
"Are you a God, like in Norse or Greek mythology?"
"I am part of a family of entities known as the Endless. Seven siblings, all with different functions that serve humanity. I am the third sibling, Dream."
“Dream of the Endless.” You realise out loud, making sense of one of the monikers he told you yesterday.
"Yes."
“And your function is to create dreams and nightmares?”
He nods an affirmation before adding, “I provide a place for dreamers to explore their wants, forge their hopes and to face their fears.”
You decide right then that you love the way he constructs his prose. It sounds like a lullaby and a poem got married in a storm cloud.
Images of him sheltering in your porch after getting caught in a rain shower pop into your mind. Beads of water are dislodged from his dark, tousled locks as you pull him across the threshold and bring your lips-
You force yourself back out of your head again, distinctly hoping that he doesn’t see day dreams as well as night ones.
“Thank you for clearing that up, I really tried to listen last night but I couldn’t remember everything.”
“You are welcome.”
“One final question: Do you do this often? You know, come to people who are struggling to sleep.”
“I do not.”
You don't know whether to feel special or even more afraid than before.
“I’m going to be honest with you, I’m not even sure if there’s anything you can do to help me. I know exactly why I get like this and what causes it. Emotional overload plus moving from one stage of sleep to another equals parasomnia.”
“No, this is something else entirely.”
His intense response makes your mouth turn dry.
"I acknowledge that moving between sleep stages can cause abnormal activity in the nervous system often resulting in symptoms like sleep paralysis or confusion upon waking. In all these cases, the bodies remain here in the waking world and the minds are roaming the Dreaming. You, however, do not present in the same way.”
You shiver and pull your duvet further up to warm your torso.
Morpheus continues speaking.
“I have observed you several times during the state you call parasomnia and each time, I was unable to see you clearly. You were faded, flickering. Straddling the line between your realm and my own.”
“Have you ever seen anything like it before?”
“I have not.”
“Oh,” you say, feeling disquieted by his revelation.
You can tell by his body language that there is more he wants to divulge.
“There have been incidences in the past where dreamers have become so over stimulated by their dreamscapes that they have created seismic disturbances in the Dreaming. These have always been low level, anomalous and no cause for concern. You have been creating regular and impactful disturbances, gaining magnitude with each occurrence.”
You shake your head, feeling foolish. “Here was me thinking that you were just here because I was having bad dreams.”
“I apologise for my subterfuge. You were in pain and that needed to be addressed first.”
Your chagrin fades a little. “I forgive you... I think.”
A moment of silence passes between you as you digest everything he has said.
“Do you know why all this is happening, with the earthquakes and me glitching in and out of your realm?”
“You have a very high sense of lucidity when you dream. I suspected it from the very first moment we spoke, when you instantly rationalised that I was part of a dream. This was confirmed when I used my sand. You knew you were dreaming and you could remember details from our prior conversation very clearly.”
“Is that the purpose you mentioned on the mountain?”
“And to prove to you that I was real. I knew this would not work if you believed me to be a hallucination.”
You nod. Morpheus begins to talk again.
“I believe that your lucidity is allowing your mind to simultaneously occupy two planes thus creating the tremors, fuelling the severity of your reaction to the nightmares and convincing you that they have followed you into the waking world.”
“So what now, what do you need to see to prove your hypothesis?”
“Now I need to see you in a nightmare.”
You close your eyes. You should have seen this coming. All the parasomnia episodes had involved nightmares.
Morpheus sees your hesitation but you jump in before he has a chance to respond.
“Couldn’t it just be a really bad bout of nightmares? I’m not exactly in the best headspace right now and I’ve always had nightmares when I’m feeling like this. Maybe they’ll just go away with time?”
“Your abilities may be exacerbated by your emotional state but it does not guarantee that the stabilisation of one will lead the stabilisation of the other. I cannot risk this escalating any further for the sake of my realm.”
He says your name when a scared frown squeezes your forehead.
“I do not wish to force you to do this. I could use the sand but I would much prefer your consent.”
You take a breath, mouth opening in readiness to reply.
The answer dies in your throat.
“Please, Y/N?”
You stare at his perfect face.
This was such a bad idea.
“I consent.”

Ooooooh~! Lyra getting salty?
Tee hee! Can you answer 24 for any three series/media of your choice? As well as 26 and 27 for Fairy Tail?
Hiya Erika! Yeah I’m feeling a wee bit salty today 👀, so I thought I would play the salt game 🤭! And of course, I hope you enjoy~!
24 Would you recommend XXX to a friend? Why or why not?
So the three I would recommend are Black Clover (obviously), Fairy Tail, and Final Fantasy Vii!
I would recommend Black Clover for it’s characters, world building and lore (what little bit we get of it 😭), and for just how undderrated it is! I honestly think people don’t really give it much of a chance, and because it isn’t like other anime where it gives you all or most of the information at the beginning, they immediately drop it and call it boring/stupid/insert some other insult here (although the ones that complain about Asta’s shouting and say he’s annoying; i get it. While I personally didn’t find it bothersome, i know others that did, so that complaint is very valid to me!). Black Clover is very much a slow burn series, so you have to give it time and have a lot of patience imo!
I would recommend Fairy Tail for a similar reason as Black Clover; while the story itself is kind of so-so, and there’s *a lot* of fanservice, the characters and their relationships with one another is just so perfect to me! For me that is probably the most enjoyable part of FT, aside from the fact that at the end of the day everything and everyone is okay (contrary to popular belief, not every story needs to have “real life consequences” in order to be enjoyable 🙄). Seeing the moments of characters bonding, having fun, and just banding together during tough times is just *chef’s kiss*. So…I would recommend it for the characters and their relationships, not really the story 😅!
I would recommend Final Fantasy VII for the story and lore, the characters and their relationships, and the music! God the music in that game is just beautiful 😭! The story is really great as well; it’s fun, tragic, but also human (this story has the “real life consequences” that I mentioned in the FT paragraph 😆)! Also the lore is very interesting, and if i’m not mistaken a lot of it was inspired by Norse Mythology 🤔? So if you enjoy that you’d probably enjoy this! The characters are all so fun and unique, their backgrounds tragic, and all of them are really “grey” morally (at least imo), but you really can’t help but like all the characters, even the bad guys!
26 Most shippable character?
In Fairy Tail, I think Lucy is the most shippable character! She just has a personality that works with anyone and everyone, and its really cool and lovely to see all the different ships with her in them (even if I don’t like or agree with all of them 😆!)
27 Least shippable character?
Natsu. Now, while I’m very much a NaLu shipper, I can also see them as just good platonic friends (although admittedly I prefer them romantic agwjwj). But when it comes to pairing him up with other characters…I just don’t see it 😅. Maybe it’s because he’s oblivious, or maybe it’s because he treats everyone the same, but to me he is the least shippable character in the series (at least romantically, but platonically? He’s one of the most shippable 😆)

Been thinking why I’m so underwhelmed with ch. 221 for jjk. And while I’m mostly neutral to it now.
I think I now understand why I’m still generally disappointed with the unboxing.
The whole scene was a sort of bathos moment, where rather taking the situation that is supposed to be serious or have emotional investment, and make it unserious or comedic. Um. I’m simplifying the term, but that’s the general gist of it.
Bathos isn’t a bad thing. But I feel like it was a wrong move for ch. 221 to go that path. I think it was how I feel with the Sakurajima Colony arc too. I was so invested with the emotional struggles of Nortoshi and see what Maki’s feeling, for it to be on halted with the introduction of two goofy side characters…
But yeah. That’s what I think anyway. You?
The way you describes bathos REMINDS ME a whole lot about bleach sometimes with humor being randomly inserted in serious fight scene sometimes and the way it handles it, it def takes me out of the story engangement most of the time
But anyway getting back to your question. It’s HEAVILY because of my investment on a certain theory that got me underwhelmed on gojo’s unboxing. Linkspooky actually discussed about this theory on Gojo potentially losing an eye and it points out the norse mythology present in jjk while also incorporating its buddhist enlightenment themes. The series always mentions enlightenment and Gojo together. One thing I found neat about the theory is that it mentioned the norse mythology Odin, the prime figure of enlightenment, hanged himself and sacrificed his eye to achieve knowledge of all words. I think that’s just really cool, and I think it would be interesting to see Gojo in such a position where his god-like powers can be “stripped down” just like that.
It’s just my personal preference really and also ngl it’s still early for me to judge the story since my butt is still reading the beginning of culling game arc and maybe gojo will actually struggle later on cuz shoko did mention that prison realm can make the prisoner unstable. I just went ahead and spoiled myself for the unboxing moment haha.

THE LOA
These guys are my Hazbin Hotel OCs.
They are just the voodoo pantheon, and this is how I would implement them into the Hazbin Hotel universe.
PREFACE
In my humble opinion, Voodoo is one of the most misrepresented religions in all of popular media. Imagine if I described Christianity to you like so:
Religious figures like Jesus Christ, Saint Peter, and Mother Mary are just a bunch of nameless evil ghosts that the Christians worship.
The Christians worship a wicked, evil deity who flooded the entire planet and brought death everywhere.
Christians practice cannibalism. Every week, they eat the flesh of their god and drink his blood too.
This is, without exaggeration, how poorly voodoo has been portrayed in popular media. This goes back to the dark history of slavery in America. Voodoo is literally how the slaves preserved their African traditions, which is why it has been so thoroughly demonized, even to this day. It’s actually crazy how much they were able to preserve, when they were so aggressively persecuted.
Voodoo has one of the coolest pantheons of gods ever. If you like world religions, this is up there with Norse, Greek, and Hindu mythologies. This is like the coolest pantheon of gods that nobody has ever heard of.
I just think it would be incredibly fucking lit if these guys were in Hazbin Hotel. They’re just a jazz band from New Orleans, and they are powerful beyond your wildest dreams. I don’t know if you could get away with putting these guys in the Amazon Prime TV Show, so I’m just going to insert them into my deranged fanfiction and make them extremely important characters.
This is my fanfiction, and I can do whatever the fuck I want with it.
MY TAKE ON THE LOA IN HAZBIN HOTEL
The Loa are just the lower-case “gods” of Hazbin Hotel. The only thing more powerful than them is upper-case “God”. They’re all really fucking strong.
They were created by the God of the Hazbin Hotel universe, whom they all refer to as “Bondye”. They all look like humans because they were created to serve as intermediaries between upper case “God” and humanity. Even though they are super powerful, you don’t see a whole lot of them because they mostly interact with living humans on Earth. They are free to travel between Heaven, Hell, and Earth. They are neither angel nor demon. They cannot be categorized as Good or Evil.
These guys are just absurdly powerful. I designed them to be as strong as I think gods would actually be.
The whole design premise here is, “What if the Voodoo pantheon was in Hazbin Hotel, and they were just jazz musicians with insane, bullshit anime superpowers?” I took several creative liberties with translating these real-life deities into completely overpowered anime characters because I just really want these guys to be completely fucking bullshit in a fight. They are so much more powerful than anything else that has been introduced in the canon of Hazbin Hotel.
My favorite one is the man center stage. I cannot wait to talk about him.

🐇 & 🕯️ plz
Hey there, and thank you for the asks!
🐇 ⇢ do you prefer writing original characters, reader inserts, or a mix of both?
Oooh. So, I think writing original characters is what I prefer, but I will say, I think the double edged sword about Satine Kryze is that she's almost like an original character because there is so little on the record as "canon" about her.
And what makes writing Obi-Wan/Satine, as well as reading fics about them, so fun for me is the fact that my Satine can be vastly different from someone else's, and it's all fair game.
The approach with Satine reminds me of Sigyn, known most commonly as Loki's wife in Norse mythology, because not much is known about her (ah, my sweet Norse lacuna.. how I love her), so in the pre-Ragnarok days of the MCU, when fandom was just having a blast with the mythology of it all, it was interesting how the takes were so vast and different, in the best of ways.
And so maybe I'd say that I prefer taking a character who comes with 1/10th of their shit established in canon, and I prefer to flesh that out and explore it, to see if I can make my theory work. There's a challenge there to sell my take on that character, and I love that.
🕯️ ⇢ on a scale from 1 to 10, how much do you enjoy editing? why is that?
Eh. I edit as I go, I suppose.
I get interrupted a lot at home (busy house, lots of noise, lots of distractions), so it's so important for me to edit constantly because I catch myself using the same verbiage over and over again, or being redundant.
I don't enjoy editing.. it's a pain in the ass. I'd rather be just banging out words on the keyboard and moving right along, but even though I know it's just fic, I still take pride in what I write, and I want to make sure that when I put it out there, I'm happy with it.
But editing in small spurts - like, going back and editing the last 2-3 pages at a time - makes it easier.

10 (Vaguely) Loki-Related Facts About Me
It's my birthday month! In honor of my birthday month, here are 10 facts about me that in some way relate to Loki. Some things I've already alluded too, though.
I've already said this, but I'm also genderfluid and bisexual (I personally consider Loki to be pan, but they're somewhat similar sexualities and MCU Loki is apparently bi.)
When Thor said, "I love snakes," I felt that on a personal level. I inherited my love of snakes from my dad, and I love lizards, too. And I have Alligator Loki/Croki merch and comics, but while I love most reptiles and won't hesitate to reach for one if it's close enough to touch, I'm actually terrified of alligators and crocodiles. No matter how small. I love Croki because he's Loki and I love all Lokis except President Loki who can choke. Kid Loki in the show and Thor in the comics holding Croki like a baby is the sweetest thing I've ever seen. But I wouldn't ever go near him, Loki or not. (And unlike most things I'm afraid of, I can pinpoint the exact moment that caused me to fear alligators.)
According to Al Ewing, Loki's birthday is December 17, making Loki and me both Sagittarius. I think the sign fits Loki more than it fits me, though.
My favorite author is Neil Gaiman, because his book Norse Mythology I've read four or five times. I also love Good Omens and The Graveyard Book. I'm still trying to get through The Sandman, American Gods, and The Ocean at the End of the Lane.
My favorite Loki fic by me is Like the Dawn (thorki), with Phantom Limb (Theo/Loki) taking a very close second. My favorite Loki fic not by me is the To Know You Anywhere series by triedunture (thorki) and Our Way, No Takebacks by dinosuns (lokius). I have a list on my phone notes app of the fics I've read since February 2020 (no reason behind the date, that's just when I started listing them), and typically all I include is the title and the pairing (which makes it hard when I'm trying to find it again). But this fic is one of the few (I think there might be one other entry) that has actual reaction commentary beside it.
My all-time favorite movie is Thor Ragnarok. Since this is on-brand and unsurprising for me, my second and third favorites are Cyrano and Howl's Moving Castle.
Unlike Loki, I am the oldest in my family (and I'm not adopted, as far as I know). But like (MCU) Loki, I have a brother and a sister.
I have dressed up as Loki once for Halloween and once for an event at a Renaissance Faire. I'm on an eternal quest to find a version of the Coat that fits me, so I can finally be AoA Loki.
I narrowly missed the off-the-walls Loki craze of 2012. I didn't start watching Marvel movies until mid-college, 2013/2014. I didn't read comics until after Ragnarok came out and I learned Thor and Loki had a sister in the comics who wasn't Hela and I saw panels from Original Sin showing Loki's canon genderfluidity. But I'll be honest. I know who I was in 2012 (*cough* destiel shipper *cough* Seriously, the only reason I personally was not involved in the OG Mishapocalypse was because 1. I still have no idea how they pulled some of it off, and 2. I'm afraid of April Fool's Day, and used to avoid the internet for the duration of the holiday so I missed the entire thing.) So if I'd been a Loki fan in 2012, I would have for sure been insufferably cringe and eleven years later would be at least a little embarrassed by my antics. (I learned how to write sonnets in high school English and proceeded to write dozens from the perspectives of Dean and Cas, guys. I wrote a 50+ page self-insert spn fic pairing myself with Balthazar that I thankfully never posted to AO3. I was wild in 2010-2012. Which is not to say I'm not wild now, but it was a different Time.)
I legitimately think about the failure of the half-hearted representation of Loki's genderfluidity in the show, and why it's such a problem, at least once a week. This mental rant has been happening since at least 1x03 aired.

KH Dark Road: the Beginning
It’s only the prologue, but it’s one hell of a ride!
The game begins with scenes from KHX, up to the scene where the Player character sees Ephemer and Skuld after the Keybalde War ended. Then we switch to Xehanort, who sheds a tear as he wakes from... his dream?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well, this is certainly one way to connect Union Cross to Dark Road. Not sure what you are going with this, Nomura, but please, go on.
Tumblr media
I think most of us have long suspected that Heartless Xehanort had something to do with Young Xehanort getting off Destiny Islands. My main question though, is this: was Xehanort the only inhabitant of that world? If so, I do not blame him for wanting out.
Tumblr media
Time skip! And baby Eraqus! Given what we know about him (descendant of Keyblade wielding lineage), I’m sure there’s a lot of theories on whether he is related to any of our Unchained crew. I’m betting on Brain, but it could be Skuld. Of course, it could also be a rando wielder, but I doubt it.
I must say, I did not expect his personality to be so carefree. It’s hard to not think of the stern Master Eraqus when I see his younger version, even when said younger version is planning on getting to class at the last minute.
Tumblr media
I am getting Birth By Sleep flashbacks.
“It’s like poetry, they rhyme.”
Tumblr media
Again, poetry.
Xehanort is going to do a lot of falling in the future.
Tumblr media
(This design is absolutely breathtaking and the reference to the True Kingdom Hearts is spot on.)
Tumblr media
Here we meet the other apprentices. That makes a total of 6, counting Eraqus and Xehanort. I wonder why the numbers dwindled to 3 under Eraqus.
Tumblr media
If anyone told me that Eraqus used to be a brat with a great sense of humor, I would stare at them hard. Apparently, a cheerful Eraqus was just what the doctor ordered.
Tumblr media
Hold up, since when were we involving the Norse Gods in this? When did this turn into a Norse mythology adaptation?
Tumblr media
...
Their Keyblade master was ODIN???
Baldr, I can kind of leave aside. The only reason I know about him is because I was in an MCU phase and while he is mostly known for his role in two stories in Norse mythology, his name might fly over a lot of people’s heads (aka past me).
But Odin.
Really, Nomura.
ODIN.
Who’s next? We already got Skuld in KHUX, so I guess we can look forward to the other two Norns. Since Baldr and Odin are here, I guess we’ll be seeing more of Odin’s sons? Like Thor?
Maybe we’ll see some version of Frigg since she can scry. Would definitely be helpful in the KH universe.
Tumblr media
I’m guessing that Nomura decided to stick with Odin’s seidrmann aspect rather than the warrior one that seems more prevalent in popular media. Also, if Yen Sid was not one of Odin’s students or a close friend, I will eat my hat.
Speaking of hats, nice touch with the hat covering one of his eyes. Now the old man only needs two ravens and his spear, though I guess it would be a Keyblade in this case.
Tumblr media
I will be calling this Birth By Sleep: Terra’s Route, Xehanort version.
Tumblr media
Why seven? For the seven Lights? Is there always going to be a Luxu-like character who is supposed to be there but is just off on his own? Then again, the Foretellers were five, six plus Luxu, seven plus their master. Are we getting another trio then?
Anyways, the upperclassmen were traveling between the worlds to prepare for their Mastery Exam when they suddenly vanished. Apparently, lowerclassmen didn’t know about that part of their future training.
Tumblr media
Gotta say, I was expecting Xehanort to be the one raging about being kept from interdimensional travel, not Eraqus. Though it was hinted at earlier that he wanted to go see the other worlds more than anything. Still, chill dude.
Odin does decide to teach them his ways, in order to find his wayward students, which is a surprise to the Dark Road crew.
Tumblr media
Welp, found the troublemakers of the group. Also, the dark haired boy on the top right looks so bloody annoyed. Something tells me he’s a bit of a rule-follower.
From what I gathered of their personalities so far, we have a relatively colorful cast.
Eraqus => excitable puppy
Xehanort => Braincell
Ginger boi => the cool kid
Purple girl => cinnamon bun (mage?)
Black haired boy => class president
Silver girl => responsible one (possibly descendant of Skuld and/or Ephemer) (swordswoman?)
I wonder how Baldr fits in this group?
Tumblr media
Oh. Well, I get why not telling him about this incident might help him not freak out, but I doubt his classmates’ absence will go unnoticed indefinitely. I am getting very curious as to what Baldr looks like and what his role in this story will be.
As for his sister, I’m going to go on a limb here and guess that she is also named after a Norse deity. Which one? No idea. I don’t recall Odin having any daughters, but if we go the MCU route, I have a good guess what Baldr’s sister’s fate will be.
Tumblr media
Our cast goes outside and discuss how they should proceed. Ginger turns to Xehanort for advice, since he’s the only one from another world.
This raises an interesting question, do all current Keyblade wielders (except Xehanort) descend from the Dandelions?
Xehanort’s status as an otherworlder as well as his maturity are definitely traits that would make a leader of the group. And Xehanort’s knowledge, especially when it comes to the current state of other worlds, is definitely another thing his peers respect about him.
Now, Odin says that they must travel in two groups of three. You then see a screen that allows you to choose who to bring with you. Xehanort and Eraqus, however, are non-negotiable.
Tumblr media
...
So, we’ve got their names. And what names they are. Let’s do a bit of research, shall we?
- Hermod, son of Odin, brother of Baldr. His name means some variant of “warrior” or “wrath of war”. He is said to have ridden to Helheim for nine days so that Baldr may return to the land of the living. While he succeeded in persuading Hel, Hel’s request was unfulfilled and Baldr remained in her halls. In one poem, Hermod and Bragi greet fallen warriors to Valhalla (note that it is unclear whether the Bragi in question is human or god).
- Bragi, god of poetry and originally ninth-century bard Bragi Boddason.  Evidence seems to suggest that while Christian writers made him a god, he was not actually worshipped as one before that.
- Urd, Norn of the past and the word for “fate”. Sister to Norns Verdandi (”happening” or “present”) and Skuld (”debt” or “future”).
- Vor, goddess of wisdom. Her name means possibly "the careful one," or "aware, careful". It is said that she is wise and inquiring, so that nothing can be concealed from her.
...I shall hencerforth call the Dark Road crew “the Norse Study Group”, NSG for short.
Xehanort and Eraqus are so out of place, name-wise.
Tumblr media
Ready to take off!
Also, Nomura, giving Xehanort a throne and a crown? Are you trying to tell us something?

hey it’s out in new zealand, that’s my break and i’ve had this draft waiting for, like, two weeks.
some notes on the codenames (source x) that blood of eden uses for the lyctors
all of the blood of eden codenames for the lyctors are based on mythical weapons, the exception being source aegis (athena’s shield, sometimes featuring the gorgon’s head), but it does make sense upon reconsideration because gideon was not the person the codename was meant for, it was pyrrha, and what is a cavalier if not a protector of their necromancer? it makes much more sense for pyrrha to be the source aegis referred to as wake’s informant, especially since we learned that phyrra was the one who instigated the relationship, not gideon prime.
source piotra took me a moment because it’s a version of the name peter and i was just ??? about it because i was not exposed to anything to do with christian religion until i moved to newfoundland and had to start religious studies in the middle of fifth grade. however, there is a legendary sword that was used by the apostle peter, which is said by some to have been brought by joseph of arimathea to britain, at the same time the poznañ archcathedral (the oldest polish cathedral, settling why the name is piotra, the polish version of peter) displays the copy of the supposed blade itself, a roman gladius with a spaded end.
joyeuse for mercymorn—did blood of eden know her simply as the saint of joy first, given that mercymorn wanted their names to be forgotten and not used, and thus codenamed her after a sword containing the word ‘joy’? joyeuse itself is the legendary sword of charlemagne, the first holy roman emperor, and described in the song of roland. the blade used at the coronation of french kings is claimed to be joyeuse and has been altered over the centuries before being displayed in the louvre today.
cassiopeia continues the mythological swords theme by being named source gram after the sword of sigurd, known as gramr in old norse, which was used to slay a dragon in the volsunga saga. as for why? i’m going to go with the proto-indo-european serpent slaying myth to connect them, cassiopeia being the mother of andromeda who was staked out and left for the sea monster kētŏs (who is not a kraken, thank you very much for inserting that idea into popular culture, clash of the titans), who was also described as a sea serpent, given the similarities between serpents and dragons in greek myth.
now, as for cytherea, source chrysaor. i was confused because i kept looking at chrysaor the mythological person before smacking myself upside the head and recalling the faerie queene by edmund spenser where chrysaor is a sword wielded by sir artegall. sir artegall, the embodiment of justice, the champion of justice. and justice, to blood of eden, is ‘the vengeance of the ten billion,’ it is justice to ‘kill the emperor and burn his houses.’ in cytherea’s own words. (there is also demeter’s title khrusaôros, referring to the golden blades of wheat, and cytherea’s return to the first house is to harvest the seeds planted during the past ten thousand years, to cut down the heirs of the nine houses in the same way wheat is cut.)
