Okay I understand where people are coming from with the "emotional suppression in Vulcans is learned not genetic" talk re: "Charades" but, consider......... the emotional suppression is muscle memory, and the aliens took away the mental muscles that remembered how to do it. It's a crude metaphor on my part, but that was the way I saw it.
Also consider: it's a sci fi show using extremely high-concept bullcrap science on a weekly basis and maybe nitpicking it is a fruitless endeavor because none of it is going to make sense otherwise and enjoying the ride for what it is is a much more enjoyable way to engage with this franchise. Sometimes you need to shrug and let dumb things happen and laugh.

kind of a tragedy that ao3 didn't exist in the 70s and 80s. i know people say it would be a horror story to find your parent's ao3 but honestly as long as you avoid anything E-rated until you're like the same age they were when they wrote it you'd be fine. my mom has an old yellowed manuscript of the extremely generic high fantasy novel she painstakingly wrote on a typewriter at age 15 and i've read it twice. her self insert was a side character tough warrior catgirl named "catchild" who had a sword and always rode on horseback and could talk to feral cats in the main character's village. are you telling me you guys would find ABSOLUTELY NO DELIGHTS in the OP deviantart OCs that your disco 'rents came up with.......

I promised myself I wouldn't get mired in the weird moral chaos that is bg3's fandom, but I have a legitimate question: for a lot of fans, is this the first time playing with Choose Your Own Adventure stories?
The writing seems to be classic CYOA in the epilogues, at least with the evil post-game companions I've experienced. If you roleplay someone happy with your choices, the game generally reflects that those choices were satisfying in the exact way you'd expect. If you roleplay someone who regrets your choices or has doubts, it usually reflects that you should regret those choices. Either way, the "reader" is given a predictable response in order to fulfill their desired narrative.
Don't believe me? Go through the epilogue and try to play a character who both likes and hates every companion or where they ended up. Some changes are subtle while others are more dramatic. A few quick examples, all from a single save: Playing a character who hates Halsin, though you romanced him, your conversation is short, civil only because Halsin is too mature to rise to your insults, and stilted. He's a distant companion that you've pushed away successfully.

Playing a character who loves Halsin and romanced him, the conversation between you is extraordinarily long and sweet, and you are written as dear to each other. It includes, potentially: sharing stories and teasing him about his more salacious ones, talking about his love of children (and them loving the bear), learning how he's settled into his new life, hearing about him finally finding happiness, being welcomed into his community, welcoming him to share in drinks, and even joyfully adopting an owlbear. This image is just the very beginning of it.

Playing a character who disapproves of Shar but encourages Shadowheart to follow Shar anyway, you get a zealot's lecture about how you're being naive, thinking that Shar's exploiting people, likely confirming your feeling that she's a lost-cause cultist now. The happiness in the conversation is one-sided (from Shadowheart).

Playing a character who is fine with Shar and encourages Shadowheart to follow Shar, you get a short, sincere thank you, and she immediately starts trying to bond with you. The tone of the conversation remains upbeat as she expresses how pleased she is with the church despite its difficulties and how she'd do everything again in a heartbeat.

Playing a character who doesn't like being an immortal consort, but ascended Astarion and agreed to it anyway, gives you an Anne Rice-like fight between bitter eternal lovers. You also get some petulant dragging of your friends.

Playing a character who loves being an immortal consort and ascended Astarion gets you the dark fantasy of all-powerful monsters in love, gleefully ruling and exploiting the world (along with your friends and probably each other) together.

These are all valid endings to the exact same story with very different implications for the future. It's easy to muddy the potential narratives if you try to hold all the unique, mutually exclusive dialog options together.
Remember, at the end of the day, this is written as a linear experience. Everyone's epilogue choices are self-contained in their own story, even if it's possible to reload and choose a different final page. Have fun fishing for unhappy endings if the drama gives the flavor you enjoy, or seek out happy endings if you want to feel fulfilled by your choices. Just know that not everyone will experience or want to experience the same ending for an otherwise identical set of choices in game. That's the cool part of getting to choose your own adventure.

Sarah swore she'd had a plan when she stepped through the doors to the prison, but it had all gone to shit pretty quickly. 
Hugo had helped her fabricate an identity as a journalist, fake ID and online credentials and everything, and posed as the director of a web-newspaper to get her an interview with a low-level criminal at the Fielding Detention Center.
She was really there for Uriah.
Alexei had been the one who'd found the CEO—former CEO—shut up in one of the dingy cells. He'd broken into Fielding to try and collect information from a different inmate, but happened upon Fox instead.
"He's… he's just in some cell?"
"Should count himself lucky he's not in the Tower. Bastard's got enough enemies."
"Maybe we can use him."
Lex's expression had become unreadable when she'd said that, but Sarah could hear the way his heart sped up, the slight hitch in his breath.
She didn't want to work with that asshole either, but their resources were few and far between when it came to anything that could stand against Corp, and someone who'd once held power—someone who'd been betrayed by the rest of the city's leaders—could be a huge asset. Even if that someone was Uriah Fox.
If she could just talk to him, maybe he'd give her something they could use. As unpleasant as the man was, everything Sarah had heard about him told her he was petty as hell. He'd probably jump at the chance to strike back.
To Alexei's credit, he didn't try and convince her otherwise when she told him her plan.
Sneak in, have a chat, get lost before anyone important knows I'm there.
"Do what you want. As long as I don't have to look at him, I don't care."
She'd agreed at the time, but now, selfish as it was, Sarah almost wished she'd asked Lex to come with her. If things went south, it would be nice to have someone whose powers were good in a fight.
"Zhang is Chinese."
"Good morning," she said brightly to the guard at receptions. "I'm Andrea Zhang, with Skyline Weekly?"
She'd complained to Hugo about that one.
"It's the only profile on here that even remotely matches you. No one's gonna know."
"What if the guy who lets me in is Chinese?"
"Yeah, right."
Yeah. Right. He was white. Maybe in his thirties, with close-cropped brown hair. He regarded her with a bored expression, flipping through some papers on the desk.
"Zhang… Zhang… ah, here." He nodded to the door behind him. "That way. I'll buzz you in."
That easy, huh? Sarah figured she'd at least have to have one of those through-the-glass phone calls like on TV, but here she was, going into the prison proper without so much as an escort.
Certainly simplified matters.
Lex had already given her a general direction to look for Fox. She walked past the reinforced doors leading to the common area, cafeteria, and yard, all connected by this one long hall to give the guards easier access. Sarah peeked through the doors' embedded windows as she went, scanning the scattered groups of prisoners for any sign of Uriah. 
She wasn't all that shocked when she didn't see him. If he was here, it was because the rest of the Corp bigwigs wanted to forget him. Out of sight, out of mind.
She pressed on down the winding corridor, past more doors leading to cell blocks and supply closets and… was that the fucking room with the chairs and the bulletproof glass and the phones? They did have one, but the lazy-ass guard would rather send a journalist in alone than do the work to keep a civilian safe.
She shouldn't have expected anything less from the prison system in this city. With that level of neglect shown to citizens, how badly were they treating the inmates? Sarah had to push aside her disgust.  She had a mission. Even beyond the task of meeting Uriah, she needed to take down Corp. Once the city was free from their grasp, she could worry about the state of the prisons.
The further she went, the emptier it seemed to get. She was passing single cells now. The one she peeked into was practically featureless. A grate in the floor probably served as the bathroom, but other than that, there wasn't even a mattress. And there were a ton of similar doors.
Fucking hell, did they put every prisoner in solitary? It was completely inhumane— nope. No. Later.
Sarah closed her eyes, sharpening her hearing. Listening for movement, for heartbeats, would be quicker than checking every single door.
Of course, she picked up the usual annoyances. The sharp buzz of the fluorescent lights above her, the roar of the AC unit, even the slight hum of electricity traveling the building's inner wires. But somewhere in the muddle of sound, she could hear it.
Thump-thump, thump-thump.
A heartbeat. Just one, so that was either a really great sign or a really bad one. She kept her eyes closed, running a hand along the wall to keep from running into anything, and followed the sound.
It grew louder and louder, until she had to re-dull her hearing to avoid being deafened by it. This was it. Fox was on the other side of this door.
And shit, there was only a single, small window in the door, high enough that she'd have to stand on her toes to peer in. And while she'd be able to hear him, he probably couldn't hear her. Did that mean she'd need to open the door? What if he tried something? Surely the asshole was desperate enough to—
Her thoughts were cut short as her ears picked up a small gasp inside. No, not a gasp, a wince.
Well that was almost to be expected. Someone like Fox was bound to incite a lot of brawls with his smarmy, self-important attitude.
But when she stood on her toes to get a look inside, she sucked in a sharp breath through her teeth.
Lex had told her Uriah was here. She'd never thought to ask what state Uriah was in.
The blond man was curled up in the furthest corner of the tiny cell, thin arms wrapped around his bare chest, head tucked against his knees. A good chunk of his hair was matted with dried blood, and his skin was covered in purpling bruises. She couldn't see his face, but she could still pick out the bruises lining his jaw, color trickling in towards his mouth. Something inside her twinged, and Sarah decided she'd allow it. She didn't have to like Fox, but right now, it was pretty easy to pity him. Poor guy'd had the rug ripped out from under him, only to find a flight of stairs at his back.
She sharpened her hearing again, kneeling to get eye level with the doorknob. It was locked, as she'd expected, but good hearing was for more than just eavesdropping, and careful listening paired with a bobby pin made for quick work of the lock. She could hear Uriah's heart rate suddenly speed up as she turned the handle, and immediately softened her ears against it.
He lifted his head as she pushed the door open and stepped inside, pulling it closed if only to escape notice. His eyes were wide—well, one eye was wide, the other was practically swollen shut—and his face was gaunt and bloodied.
Sarah let out a breath. "Uh. Hi."
"S-Spyglass?"
"Ah, so you do remember me." She crossed her arms, then remembered she wanted to get him to cooperate, not scare him, and uncrossed them. "It's nice to know you at least knew who I was when you sent an assassin after me."
Uriah raised a shaking arm, as if to shield his face. "Please— I'm sorry, I—I know sorry doesn't m-mean anything, but please, please don't hurt me—"
Shit, that had probably sounded vaguely threatening. "No, no. I'm… I'm not here for revenge or whatever." She sighed. "I… actually had a few questions for you."
"I'll tell you anything you want, I'll comply, please don't—"
"I'm not trying to hurt you," Sarah cut in. Had she sounded threatening again? Was it possible to not sound threatening to the poor guy right now? She tried again.
"I have some information I really need. I won't hurt you if you can't answer my questions, okay? They're just questions."
She waited for Fox to nod. He never took his eyes off her.
"First, do you know of any fail-safes in place for the Hero CEOs? Backup plans that let Corp get away scott-free if we do manage to pin something big on them?" Like how they used you as a scapegoat? She didn't say that part out loud. If that wound wasn't still fresh, it was constantly being re-opened in this environment.
Uriah nodded, but didn't actually say anything. She tried to keep her voice soft as she prompted,
"Like what?"
"I… I don't know, I… I can't remember. E-everything I had, everything good, was on my personal network."
"Network?" Sarah raised an eyebrow.
"Computer. A—a specific computer."
She sighed. "Which I don't imagine you currently have on you."
"I'm sorry—"
"Stop." Sarah pinched the bridge of her nose. "Do you know where this specific computer is?"
"Still at Titanium. In a—a vault."
"That I presume you know how to access?"
He nodded.
"Tell me." It would be a fucking doozy of a mission, but that computer could be a gold mine. Secrets, conspiracy, fail-safes… Corp's dirty laundry. If they could break in, maybe Hugo could hack the network.
"There's a code."
"Of course."
"A-and a fingerprint scanner."
"Of. Course." Fucking of course. Because there had to be something there special enough that Uriah Fox would just have to be brought along. It was entirely possible he was making that part up in a bid to get free. If Lex were here, he'd suggest just cutting off a finger, and she'd be hard-pressed to ignore the idea.
But despite her annoyance, despite knowing the truth of Uriah Fox, that he was a power-hungry, horrible man who was willing to send assassins after literal children to keep his reputation, she felt kind of queasy at the thought of hurting the trembling thing he'd become.
She… she needed time. She needed a new plan. The info about the computer was great, but she doubted Fox would be able to offer much more in this state. 
As she opened the door, peeking outside, Uriah piped up behind her.
"Where..?"
"I need to think. Thanks for the answers." She stepped out—
"Wait! Please… please, take me with you."
Her stomach sank, laden with equal parts dismay and pity. Yeah, his situation sucked, but the idea of keeping him around, of bringing him back to the team… no thank you. If the fingerprint bit was true, they'd find a way to synthesize it, and they shouldn't need Fox to get into the laptop.
"Sarah, please—"
"Using my name won't help." She did look back then, and wished she hadn't. Fox was on his hands and knees, looking up at her with teary, pleading eyes.
"You're a hero. Y-you save people."
Real heroes save everyone. Hadn't she told Lex that? Did it make her a hypocrite then, to want to turn her back on the person responsible for so much of her misery? Who'd killed her old team leader, who'd tortured one of her friends for a year?
Maybe it did. But it still felt justified.
"I was a hero," she said. "You made me a rogue."
She pulled the door closed behind her, dulling her hearing to lessen the sharpness of Uriah's pleas, and began to briskly walk back down the hallway.
With the uninspiring security, she probably could've walked right out the front doors without signing out, but Sarah stopped by the desk again anyway.
"Zhang," the guard mumbled. "Done so soon?"
"I got what I needed," Sarah offered, clutching the pen a little too long after signing her name in the visitor log. "I… heard a rumor while I was inside."
"A rumor?"
She set the pen down. "Yeah. Supposedly Uriah Fox is in here somewhere." What was she saying? Was she about to threaten the guard into treating Fox better?
"Is that what you heard?"
"It's what I heard. Though I didn't see any sign of him, so I don't know how true it is."
His eyes darted to the pen at her fingertips. "Off the record?"
Sarah nodded. "Off the record."
The guard leaned back in his chair. "Yeah, Fox is here, all right."
She feigned surprise. "Really? What did he do? I heard it was something about embezzlement?"
"Something like that," the guard agreed.
"Where is he?" Sarah ventured. "Like I said, I didn't see him."
"He's been in solitary for a while now," the guard replied.
A while. How long was a while? How long had it been since he'd been thrown out? Two months? Three?
"What did he do?"
"Existed." The guard chuckled. "They put a man like that---who's spent his entire life stepping on other people---in a cell block filled to the brim with men who've been screwed over by him and others like him. What'd you think would happen?" He thumbed through the stack of papers on his desk idly. "The first few weeks, it was all we could do to keep him alive. It's a miracle he's still kicking, honestly." He leaned in, conspiratorially. "Between you and me, there's at least two guards on staff who have beef with the guy, and I know they've been paying him visits."
Sarah grit her teeth, trying to make it sound casual when she replied, "And you aren't stopping them?"
"Why would I? It's Fox."
It's Fox.
That was her logic, too. Why would I? It's Fox.
Why would I?
Because real heroes save everyone. And whether Uriah likes it or not, I'm still a hero.
She forced a smile, rolling the pen back to the guard. "Well, have a great day," she said, not waiting for him to reply before turning on her heel and marching out the doors.
Whether she liked it or not, she'd be back. And Fox would be leaving with her.
She'd be back.

hhhhh yes!! eldritch horror darkling is so interesting like I am always thinking about just how far his powers can go and the effects being a shadow summoner could have on him at a deep, primal level. like I love the idea of him acting just this side of human, but he always knows when you're approaching he can feel you in the air he can grab you from anywhere he is a shadow creature but not because he is master of shadow and they all bow to him. anyways...

MP100 Divine Tree Arc analysis (yet again): Dimple and Honesty
ok so divine tree arc is my favorite mp100 arc bc of the intricately-written miscommunication and understandable character motivations on both ends, and it's written in a way where i've watched its episodes easily 20-30 times and STILL notice new things!
(long analysis under cut)
So I've noticed that there's a mistranslation in a line in episode 5. Mob asks Teru to "snap out of it" / "come to your senses", but Dimple's response got mistranslated to this:

When I'd initially watch this, I wouldn't listen to the spoken line closely enough to notice the translation was faulty, and would always think "but...you ARE controlling him with brainwashing. why lie like that?"
What he says would translate more accurately to, "Unfortunately for you, Hanazawa is sane." I'm fairly sure he says it this way in reference to his previous line about how "Their personalities won't be any different". He's telling Mob that Teru's acting in a way he normally would, which is then emphasized by Teru insisting 'this is just another important thing in my life'.
And you might wonder why I'm so particular about this mistranslation! It's because making Dimple say "I'm not controlling him" would be a lie! Even if he's not controlling him as if using a remote control, he is brainwashing him, so that would still count as control! It would be a lie for Dimple to say this!
And that specific distinction made me realize something!!!!!
Throughout the conversation Mob and Dimple have in episode 5, Dimple never flat-out lies. What puts Mob off is that Dimple isn't being entirely honest, but Dimple never lies about things, instead he omits the whole truth.
Despite the 'carried away' conversation in episode 3 ending poorly, Dimple makes the offer again within the broccoli that he and Mob should achieve this godhood goal together, but Mob is so focused on getting Dimple to stop that he doesn't notice that this is Dimple's attempt at working together with him. (Mob himself notes this in ep 6: "You could've achieved it by yourself, but you asked me to join you. You trusted me before i trusted you")

The problem here is that Dimple is overly prepared for things to turn into a fight. He knows that Mob could easily erase him because of the difference in their powers, so he specifically waits within the broccoli and uses its powers to his advantage in this encounter. Even when talking to him, Mob's upset that they aren't talking face-to-face, unaware that Dimple's hiding specifically because he's scared of Mob's rage. Dimple even ASKS "If you don't agree with me, won't you resort to force in the end?" to test the waters, and when Mob replies that he will, it turns into a fight.
And when Mob realizes this after more of Dimple's hiding behind powers, he asks if Dimple's scared of him only to be met with silence.

Dimple doesn't lie by saying he's not scared of Mob, he instead just conveniently doesn't talk until he thinks he has the upper hand. Only when Mob finally collapses and notices his powers are being absorbed by the broccoli does Dimple chime in, because now he thinks he's winning this fight.
He brings up Tsubomi and tells the truth about his perception of her, that she seems like the type who wouldn't accept a confession from Mob if he were to try it. It's a genuine observation from him, it's Dimple's honest thoughts, he's not lying. The problem is that he uses this observation to segue into the Psycho Helmet point, and offers a faulty solution to Mob's worries by suggesting he just rely on power. (Similar to how back when Mob ran the marathon with the goal of confessing to Tsubomi if he got at least 10th place, Dimple offered to cheat and possess him when he wounded his leg.)

This then causes more tension and the two start fighting again. And yet again, Dimple is omitting some of the truth. He thinks to himself about how powerful Mob should be at this point, and how to win a fight against him if things have to come to that. Usually Dimple will give his thoughts on a risky situation out loud, but here he keeps it to himself.

Just like earlier when Mob asked if Dimple was scared of him, Dimple conveniently stays silent here instead of being upfront about his apprehension.
Mob is offput by Dimple's insistence on the Psycho Helmet goal, and says that 'this isn't you, it doesn't suit you'. Dimple realizes later on that he doesn't feel fulfilled by this goal, but in the moment he's horribly upset by the way Mob jumps to the extreme of saying 'everything he's doing is fake'. Dimple has wanted this godhood goal this whole time even if it started waning, so to be told something like that feels like an insult to his efforts and ambitions. ("Don't go casually denying the thing I've been wanting this whole time!")
Dimple attacks, but on instinct tries to ask if Mob is ok, but upon seeing Mob's rage flare up again, shrinks back and says that he's been trying to use Mob this whole time.
It reminds me of the conversation Reigen and Dimple had when Mob was in the Mogami mindscape. Reigen was able to identify that Dimple is not the type to openly admit that he's starting to care about Mob's well-being seperate from the ulterior motive of the long-term godhood goal, so he spoke to Dimple on his own terms, by implying that he'd miss out on the chance to selfishly manipulate Mob from the shadows if he left now. Even though Reigen briefly points out that he knows Dimple feels odd about being trusted (a wink and a nod kind of way of saying "I know you care about Mob's safety"), he focuses the main point of his persuasion on this dishonest "yeah sure but you want to manipulate him right?" question.

Dimple fucking SUCKS at admitting he cares for people. The closest he gets by this part in the story is hyping Mob up, but that's because he can easily hide that behind "Well I'm just thinking of the long-term godhood goal, if I hype him up, he'll want to be a god more!". Even in the Mogami mindscape, Dimple reminds Mob of how much everyone ELSE cares for him! He'll worry for Mob's well-being and advise him against getting into dangerous situations, but will never flat-out say "It's because I care about you as a friend, I genuinely have gotten to the point where I want you to be safe outside of this goal". And so in this scene, he lacks the insight to realize he cares, and falls back into "...Well I've been manipulating him, I know that much.".
And so then we finally have the monkey shirt insults. It can be easy to misunderstand this as the first instance Dimple's 'been honest / stopped lying' since Mob entered the Divine Tree, but that isn't right! Dimple has been honest about his godhood goal and his intent to team up with Mob to achieve it, but he had also been omitting the truth to get to that goal. He stays quiet about how scared he is of Mob's powers, and Mob's realization that Dimple's being dodgy about something makes Mob doubtful of Dimple's true intent in turn.
When Dimple offers to team up with him, the fact that it has this immense power attached to it deters Mob.
When Dimple says that Tsubomi likely wouldn't be interested in him, it's followed by the offer of this immense power as a solution.
But when Dimple insults the monkey shirt, there's nothing attached. He's JUST disgusted by the shirt. Instead of something that can give him some sort of power, he speaks honestly about something mundane. (If anything, it's something that risks him getting hurt due to Mob's bad mood.)

What's threatened to drive this wedge between them, what's caused Dimple to become dodgy about his thoughts is this potential immense power the Divine Tree can give, as well as Mob's immense power he wields being seen as a threat by Dimple.
Mob entered the broccoli with intent to force Dimple to stop this plan entirely, and so it took him a while to notice that his power and anger had made Dimple feel like he had to prepare for a fight.
Dimple hid behind these new powers and tried to persuade Mob that they're amazing by doing things like showing off his new God form and its powers. But his initial refusal to ask himself why his godhood goal had been feeling empty made it so he tried to insist to Mob that these powers are great (Basically like a sunk-cost fallacy. It's what he wanted this whole time and what he'd put so much effort into, so it has to be worth it, right?).
So it's only when Mob realizes that powers are in the way of the conversation they're trying to have, do they begin to both look inwards and realize how their miscommunication had gotten so extreme.
And so from then on, Dimple is able to speak honestly without any ulterior motives.
(From here I'm tempted to get somewhat side-tracked and mention how the Divine Tree is a perfect symbol for immense power, and how it perfectly represents how Dimple had been trying to persuade Mob to abuse power initially in the series. He kept insisting powers are all-encompassing and can do ANYTHING in the beginning, and then his abuse of the tree's power leads to the Psycho Helmet entities trying to EAT everything and turn EVERYTHING into fuel for its own power. Power for nothing but power's sake. Some translations + the ENG dub somewhat skews their dialogue, but the Psycho Helmet entities speak in a very fragmented way, and don't ever refer to Mob as a person or with any person-related pronouns! They ONLY refer to Mob once and it's as "that." And so there's a horror there that this tree will consume ANYTHING for power. It's the epitome of the flawed ideology Dimple had at the very beginning of the series turned physical, so Dimple has to fight against it, and realizes the error in his ways in the conversation after said fight. So he is then sacrificed in a way to use his new immense power for a GOOD cause, to get rid of this threat. It perfectly puts that flawed ideology Dimple had at the beginning of the series to rest.)
...but this post was meant to be about observing the specific point that Dimple never flat-out lies in episode 5's conversation. A really subtle touch to the character writing in this arc, the fact that he's not just "evil again", but rather feels the need to prepare for a fight with underhanded means. He's not lying, he's omitting more of the truth than he usually does.
