I saw a thing that was wondering why people would spell 'folks' as 'folx' since the orginal was already gender neutral
At the end of the 1960s and te start of the 1970s there was a lot of pornographic comic books, and they spelled it as 'comix' with an X for X-Rated because that's how the 70s were.
Once the porn had established a market for adult focused comic, there was a bunch of other underground comics in the 70s and the X at the end became a signifier of the alternative press instead of a porn thing.
Two other big things in underground media were becoming huge in the 70s. Star Trek fandom mailing lists following the end of the show with serious compilation magazines patterned after 1967's Spockanalia, and punk rock hitting with its own scene sheets distributed in record stores to keep people aware of what was going on.
In 1982, Mike Gunderloy sought to create a periodically published directory of as many of the smaller self published periodicals as he could, mostly Sci-Fi and literary stuff at first because that's what he was into and connecting all of it into what would later be known as Zine Culture.
So the X at the end crept into zine culture from the comix scene, and you saw it used to make punk plural with phrases like "punx not dead" and "American HArdcore Up The Punx" and folks got turned into folx in the late 80s and the 90s (except in Chicago where it was used to distinguish just folks in general from the Folks Nation street gang as early as 75)
Whole lot of online queer culture has connections to riot grrl and riot grrl is very much a part of Zine Culture so that's how 'folx' got its way onto social media

How are people storing their zines? Reddit suggested trading card sleeves, which I like, but zines are typically bigger (at least mine are); I thought about using a clothesline and clothes pins for storage and display y'know, but that likely would damage the zines; and, obviously, using a box. Zines aren't collectable (I'm pretty sure), so this isn't super serious, but I like 'em, y'know.

As someone who used to run fandom zines/anthologies and was there at the height of voltron zines these are my red flags if a zine may not work out:
1) they're asking for mods.
[Asking strangers on the internet is a risk and is what usually leads to projects unfinished when one ghosts the others]
2) mods themselves are inexperienced
[Especially if they're handling money, a lot of times that money disappears or it doesn't get to that stage because running a zine is overwhelming]
3) mods have several projects all ongoing [had one mod tried to insert themselves into my zine, they had 7 other projects they were modding and none finished with one cancelled due to another mod stealing]
4] their vetting process somehow involves a test of purity culture to the mod's discretion/bias
[Writers and artists have been rejected for projects over things they made 5+ years ago for ships a mod deems immoral yet unrelated to the current project. I understand vetting to ensure those you accept aren't harassing ppl, but being told they're harmful over sheith or hannigram art? Thats dumb and will cause heartache]
And 5 and this is in light of a zine on twitter] do not join a zine that requires you to be fully outed as trans and have to prove yourself trans enough to join. That's just...vile. you want a trans inclusive zine? Ask your trans friends to join. Do not subject yourself to a stranger's discretion to prove you are trans enough. You ARE trans enough if you say you are trans.

CREATING AN ARCHIVE OF MCR ZINES
Hi! I'm @cancan-jpg , and I'm interested in preserving the history of DIY media!
That's why I'm putting together this blog - an informal collection of My Chemical Romance fanzines, past and current, physical and digital, free and paid, to document this fandom's history of creation and collaboration!
Currently, this mostly involves reblogging info posts to document each one that exists, or general posts about MCR zines - both those already published, and those seeking submissions. For now, I'll be focusing on collaborative zines in order to stay comprehensive, though I hope to branch out to single-person zines in future!
If there's info about MCR zines out there that I haven't posted yet, feel free to hit my inbox and share!

truly, will zines ever stop being disappointing??
Let’s introduce our guest creators!!! (proceeds to mention artist after artist after artist…one writer towards the end)
look i’ve been a part of a few zines and very few prioritize writing over art or really even give it the time of day.
i know art evokes quick emotion and the visual receptors of our minds love to light up like christmas trees but jfc invite writers into your zines. pls.

Metropolis Article: A Guide to Zines in Tokyo
Here is my latest article for Metropolis, on my favorite topic in the whole world! For a week, I visited different big and small bookstores, galleries, and shops in search for the best places to buy zines. If you're interested in getting to know more about them and where to find self-published works in Tokyo, please have a look.
Tumblr media
"In an era with high demand for digital content, it may seem contradictory to invest in print work. But these two worlds aren’t mutually exclusive. Thanks to social media, zines have boomed in Japan in the last ten years. In a country where self-publishing is more accessible than in the US or Europe and customers have a deep appreciation for craftsmanship, the zine community has thrived and continues to expand.
It can also be argued that the increase in the number of hours we spend online, whether for work or entertainment, has led some of us to search for offline forms of spending our free time. Zines are not only a medium of self-expression but also a way to connect with our inner selves and others in a creative way. Anything on paper tends to stay with us much longer than on a screen.
Tumblr media
With a long history of self-published creative work, Tokyo has much to offer for zine fans, from specialized stores to events and workshops. If you’re looking to dive deep into the world of self-made print work, here is a guide on where to find zines, where to meet like-minded people, and how to make them. Who said print is dead?"
You can continue reading this article on Metropolis' webpage.

~ zine culture and handmade art are more important than ever ~
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Zines are handmade, self published booklets and — unlike magazines and books — can be made by anyone with a message, a bit of artistic vision, and access to a printer. Zines also have the benefit of being as short or as long as the creator wishes and can cover any subject matter and be of any style, much unlike traditional publishing."

☆ pinned post (abt me) ☆
salutations!
i've noticed more and more people putting pertinent info about themselves in pinned posts rather than about me pages and so, in true conformist fashion, i figured i'd do the same.
══════ ⋆★⋆ ══════ ⋆★⋆ ══════ ⋆★⋆ ══════ ⋆★⋆ ══════
☆ you can call me vendetta or v, or make something up i don't really care as long as yr nice about it
☆ i am 18
☆ they/he/she
☆ genderqueer lesbian
☆ hellenic polytheist
══════ ⋆★⋆ ══════ ⋆★⋆ ══════ ⋆★⋆ ══════ ⋆★⋆ ══════
i started this blog to promote my zines, but since then it's grown beyond that-- along with my zines and art, i post a lot of writing (mostly prose and mostly queer) as well as a lot of photos/ graphics i find around the internet.
☆☆☆ things i mostly post about: -> my experience as a queer/ trans dyke -> musings on queer theory and gender theory -> punk culture (especially queer core and riot grrrl) -> feminist, punk, and queer history -> my art & creative writing -> queer solidarity -> literature -> religions (especially victorian era occultism, the hellenistic age, and christian mysticism)
══════ ⋆★⋆ ══════ ⋆★⋆ ══════ ⋆★⋆ ══════ ⋆★⋆ ══════
i do not care who interacts with my blog-- if i find someone truly tedious i will block them. that being said, this blog is a safe space for:
-> trans people -> queers -> transmasc lesbians -> transfem lesbians -> lesbians on t -> he/him lesbians -> transfem butches -> all lesbians (i love you) -> gender hackers, gender pirates, gender outlaws -> theory readers -> theists -> atheists -> punks
interact at your own risk. i don't use tone tags and rarely use content warnings, but i will give content warnings for:
-> graphic descriptions of suicide -> graphic descriptions of self-harm -> eating disorder/ weight talk (i try to block all accounts that talk about this but if, for some reason, it ever comes up i will give a content warning) -> graphic descriptions of abuse -> flashes/ strobes
i will not give content warnings for: -> artistic gore (i do post some body horror literary content and artistic gore art i find on the internet) -> vague/ non-graphic references to violence, nudity, or otherwise nsfw content.
══════ ⋆★⋆ ══════ ⋆★⋆ ══════ ⋆★⋆ ══════ ⋆★⋆ ══════
☆☆☆ my links ☆☆☆ ☆ instagram ☆ zine fest catalogue ☆ google drive folder of queer theory/ literature pdfs ☆ riot grrrl archive ☆ twitter archive of literature quotes ☆ tumblr desktop page (organised links to specific posts) ☆ digital PDFs of my zines (in case u can't receive queer mail/ don't have an address) ☆ linktree with other things from me + charities to support
