I am told that recovery is not linear and that it is different for everyone. Mine is being more difficult than I had anticipated. When I was in the hospital, I was recovering from being sick. Since I was discharged, it seems more like I am recovering from getting better. I find this very confusing.

I’m still me, but the Polly who walked into the hospital and the Polly who walked out of it are not the same Polly. I was very sick when I was first admitted. The girl who was discharged was much, much healthier. It took sixty six days to get from the first girl to the second, but it is the girl in the middle who I am the most interested in right now. She’s the one who lived through it, and I am trying to tell her story.

Maybe then I can recover from whatever it is I am recovering from. But there are gaps in my memory and they hide the landmines left over from my time spent in no man’s land.

Tread carefully. That is my advice to the reader, and myself.
