Friday Favorites: June 5th 2015
Friday Favorites: A way to recap my week, show gratitude, and remember the good times. Favorites can be anything, funny videos, favorite foods, my current jams, even special moments. Here are my favorites from the past week.
1// METZ - II - Last Friday, at Union Transfer, I got my face blown off by METZ. It's been awhile since they toured down this way. Hailing from Toronto, they've been playing lots of festivals on the international circuit. Unfortunately, I discovered them just a little while after they played a show in Philadelphia. So the anticipation was great for last Friday. While I was there I made sure to get a limited "Loser" edition vinyl LP of their latest album, II, which I've been enjoying immensely throughout this past week. I even had a happy little moment in my living room when the sunlight reflected off of the iridescent slipcase, casting a rainbow on my wall. METZ second album does not dissapoint, just as powerful and noisy as their first, make sure to give it a spin.
Check out their single Acetate, from the II album:
2// Ellen T. Crenshaw - "We Are Entitled To Wear Cowboy Boots To Our Own Revolution" - What more is there to say, these illustrations by Ellen Crenshaw are so on point. She creates a series of illustrations depeciting influential people's thoughts on feminism, while remaining inclusive and representing those from diverse backgrounds. Great Job! I might need to buy a print.
3// Yoga with Adriene - Morning Yoga - Energizing Morning Sequence - I came across this video on my Facebook timeline from my friend, Lindsay, (psst, take a look at her photo blog, example below) and I have to say it wasn't what I was expecting. Admittedly, I haven't been keeping up with my practice, and my iliotibial band syndrome has been killer lately, but this was a little more rigorous than I originally imagined. Adriene does a great job making me feel at ease and comfortable in my adjustments, throughout this truly energizing morning workout. Expect to feel grounded, streched and strengthened, and ready to start your morning!
Okay so maybe number 3 is also just a double appreciation for Lindsay being so cool. Here's a photo she took of me at the Noise BBQ Memorial Day weekend.
4// Cast Iron Dog Tail Hooks from Mineralistic - Wednesday, while Stephanie and I waiting for Noah to discuss our plans for the space for tonight's event at Tattooed Mom, we entered Mineralistic. I pop in there from time to time to take a look at their stones and minerals, but on my way out I spotted this and feel in love. I've been trying to collect some things to fill our entryway in the new apartment, and I thought this would be perfect to put dog leases on. I can't wait to hang it and see how the space develops.
5// The Great and Terrible & the Small and Meek: Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz at Bartram's Gardens - I've had the urge to volunteer lately, and was made aware that the Bartram's Gardens are having a lot of events this summer and needed help. The first event that came up was a reimagining of 'The Wizard of Oz' presented by Der Vorfuhreffekt Theatre. I was extremely excited to help out for this on Thursday night, as I have friends involved, and well I just really wanted to see it! It did not disappoint! The play was site-specific to Bartram's and beautifully entertwined with the landscape, including an impressive witches tower built into a tree. The production was family friendly and even included some children actors running around as munchkins and other terrors sent by the Wicked Witch of the West. The play featured incredible handmade puppets, live music, including an impressive performance by my friend Dan on drums and chimes (here is his project, a tree named turtle), and a hypnotizing sychronized dance of the poppies. I was glad to be a small part of helping out, just making and distributing popcorn and lemonade, and I look forward to offering my assistance with future Bartram's Garden events. I wish them good luck with their last two showing tonight and tomorrow. Make sure you get a chance to see it. Reserve your space here or check out the Facebook event or Bartram's Gardens site for more info.
Well, that wraps it up for this week's Friday Favorites. Now I gotta go get ready for the First Friday NUMiNOUS Magazine Release at Tattooed Mom!

First Friday Event with NUMiNOUS and Tattooed Mom!!
This past year, I've been working with NUMiNOUS to help design their magazine, as well as create promotional flyers for events, and merch. NUMiNOUS is a Philadelphia-based, female-organized publication spearheaded to open the door to elegant presentation and collaboration for artists, and the artistic community. Each issue has a particluar theme, showcases a featured artist, and is filled with submissions from Philadelphia and beyond. June 1st marked the release of the biggest issue yet, Street Art. This Friday, June 5th, we are super excited to host a magazine release party at Tattooed Mom! (Click here for the facebook event)
Grab yourself the latest edition of NUMiNOUS, or a back issue - we will have copies of every issue - and get some exclusive merch including our classic tees and our limited edition street art tanks, featuring the logo to the right designed by yours truly. View and purchase artwork from local artists at one of South Street's most unique bars. We are also excited to announce that we will have live painting and art installation by YOMI T.G.M.B at this event as well as the following talented artists and lovely models: Michael Pagdon, Ellen Durkan, Wear Liberty, Rebecca Ellmer, Lady Lazarus, Kellie Lakie, and Dannie Wolf. Party on with us at Tattooed Mom at 530 South St. The event starts at 8pm and there is no cover. 21+ In the meantime, check out the promo video starting Sonja Century shot on location at Tattooed Mom, below, and comment to request songs and artists you wanna hear at the party! x Lauren

Take two
One of my least favorite feelings is that I have plauteaued. I like the idea of a growing and ever evolving life. That's why I'm (re)starting this blog (with a more varied focus). I need a new adventure.   The thing is, I don't have a particular focus for blogging. Even though I am a graphic designer, this will not solely be a graphic design blog. This is going to be a lifestyle blog. I get inspired by a lot of things, I fall in love with everyone and everything. I am going through some lifestyle changes on my way through my 20s. I've recently gave up dairy due to a emerging lactose allergy. (Though I have had some relapses, cheese I miss you.) I've also embraced the fact that I'm not getting any younger. When I turned 25, I started seeing visible changes to my body, getting wrinkles, gray hairs, as well as my rosacea decideing to make a comeback. So I'll share my journey dealing with those things. Not to mention my battle trying to get decent at yoga, and exploring homeopathic care.  April of this year, my partner and I also got our own apartment together with our pit bull, Anni, and pug, Rocko. I have STILL not finished unpacking and decorating, so if your lucky you'll get to see some progress on that. If we had an interior design style, i'd probably call it rustic eclectic, with emphasis on eclectic. We are a couple of weirdos, who have a strong love for flea markets and picking things out of the trash, or free piles we pass on West Philadelphia streets. I'm hoping this blog will help me focus on some certain things and help me feel as if I'm gaining momentum. I'll be trying to get better at writing, photography, graphic design, and even self reflection. I look forward to sharing.  With Love, Lauren

Process: Matthew MULE McKinley's band merch
I started designing for multi-talented Matthew Mule McKinley when I was experimenting with overlaying textures and type in Photoshop, and my results made me instantly think of him. Knowing he was coming out with an EP soon, I sent him a cover mock up. The gritty textures fit well with his deep dirty vocals and re-imaginings of old blues songs. From there I designed the rest of the "Alone on the Orange Floor" EP packaging, and solidified a new working relationship. Since then I have designed his full length "Blood in the Still", a logo for his band, Run Molly Run, and packaging for his Bluegrass project, Got Jamn String Band. He's about to go on tour with the band Filthy Still, so we wanted to make sure to get some merch out, to help fund him on the road. For his new merch we decided to deviate a little from the aesthetic that we been working with and make something that would translate well to a t shirt. Both Matt and I have been getting into weirdo art more as of late and I've been practicing my pen skills. Drawing in this style allows me to get a little looser and break from the realism I tend to fall into. Much of the features in this style tend to be exaggerated, highlighting the bizarre and gross. If you're not familiar with weirdo art, think R.Crumb, Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, or a contemporary, Sean Aaberg, known for Pork Magazine.
The first attempt I made at drawing the mule was too straightforward and realistic, I needed to let loose! Matthew and I went back and forth quite a bit sending sketches and feedback. In the end the mule ends up looking pretty crazed and full of energy, like much of Matthew mule McKinley's music. The mule shirts were silk screened through a third party, along with Run Molly Run t-shirts I designed awhile back. I think they came out great, and really fits the musician's style and aesthetic.
If you would like to purchase either, send $20 via Paypal to [email protected]. Make sure to include your size and shipping address. OR even better see Matthew mule McKinley play with Filthy Still and purchase one at the show!

Coming Back to Tumblr
Just read an article about Facebook reducing organic page views down to 1 to 2 percent. I don't have enough likes for this to even be substantial. I have been using my Facebook page more frequently because it is easiest to update from my phone. And people can engage more efficiently. You have to admit Tumblr apps are lacking and there are not too many ways you can engage.  But since I've heard this news, I will be making more of a push to update my Tumblr more frequently and will look into putting a blog on my website.
